(a) What are magnetic field lines ? How is thedirection of magnetic field at a point in a magnetic field determined using field lines ? (b) Two circular coils X and Y are placed close to each other. IF the current in the coilX is changed, will some current be induced in the coil Y ?Give reason. (C) State " Fleming'sright hand rule . |
|
Answer» Solution :(a) Megnetic field lines are the lines drawn in a magnetic field along which a north magnetic pole would MOVE. Magnetic field LINE are also known as magneticf lines of force. Direction of magnetic field lines is determined by the following activity. A bar magnet is placed on a sheet of paper and its boundary ismarked with a pencil. A magnetic composs is brought NEAR the N-pole of the bar magnet. It is observed that N-poleof magnet repels the N-pole of compass needle due to which the tip of the compass needle moves aways from the N-pole . Thus a magneticfield pattern is obtained arounda bar magnet. Each magnetic field line is directed from the north poleof a magnet . the strength of magnetic field is indicated by the degree of closeness of the field lines. So themagnetic field is the strongest near the poles. (b) Two circular coils X and Y are placed close to each other. If the current in coil X is changed, the mangnetic field associated with is also changes around the coil Y placed near it . This change in magnetic field induces a current in the coil Y. When the current in coil X is switched on , it becomes an electromagnet and produces a magnetic field around coil Xis switchedoff, its magnetic field in coil Ystops quickly. This effect is just the same as pulling a magnet quickly out of the coil Y , an inducedcurrent flows in coil Y in the oppsite direction. (C) Fleming right hand rule .Hold the thumb, the forefinger and the centre finger of your hand at right angles to one another. Adjust your hand is such a way that forefinger PIONTS in the direction of magnetic field, and thumb points in the direction of motion of conductor, then the direction in which centre finger points gives the direction of induced current in the conductor. |

Explain why the planets do not twinkle? |
| Answer» Solution :Planets are much CLOSER to the earth and are seen as extended sources. So, a planet may be CONSIDERED as a COLLECTION of a large number of point-sized light source3s . Although light coming from INDIVIDUAL point -sezedsources flickers but the total amount of light entering our eye from all the individual point-sized sources avereage out the to be constant. Thereby planets appear equally bright and there is no TWINKLING of plantes. | |

A ball of mass 50 is thrown vertically upwards with an initial velocity of 20 ms^(1) Calculate: (i) in the initial kinetic energy imparted to the ball, (ii) the maximum height reached if air friction is neglected, and (iii) the maximum height reached if 40% of the initial energy is lost against the air friction.Take g=10 ms^(-2) |
|
Answer» Solution :GIVEN :m =50g=`(50)/(1000)` kg =0.05 kg u=20 m `s^(-1)` ,g=10 m `s^(-2)` (i)Initial kinetic energy imparted to the ball `=(1)/(2)mu^(2)=(1)/(2)xx0.05xx(20)^(2)=10J` (ii)If AIR friction is negligible ,then POTENTIAL energy at the maximum height `therefore H=(v^(2))/(2g)=((20)^(2))/(2xx10)=20 m` (iii)If 40 % of the initial energy is lost against the air friction .then Potential energy at the maximum height or `mgh=(60)/(100)xx(1)/(2)mv^(2)` `therefore h=(0.6 v^(2))/(2g)=(0.6xx(20)^(2))/(2xx10)=12 m` |

List two advantages associated with water harvesting at the community level. |
|
Answer» Solution :Water harvesting is a method of holding rainwater on the surface of the earth, to make it percolate under the ground so as to recharge groundwater. TWO ADVANTAGES associated with water harvesting at the community LEVEL are (i) Giving people control over their local water resources ensures that mismanagement is REDUCED. (ii) Over-exploitation of these resources is reduced. The water stored in the ground does not evaporate, provides MOISTURE for vegetation over a wide area, and is protected from contamination by human and animal waste. |

(a) How can you identify the three types of mirrors without touching them ? (b) What do you mean by focal length of a spherical mirror ? |
|
Answer» Solution :(a) STAND in front of mirror near it and look to your IMAGE. (i) If the image is erect and of same size and size of image does not CHANGE even if you move forward or backward, the mirror is a plane mirror. (ii) If the image is erect and diminished ONE, the mirror is a convex mirror. (iii) If the image is erect and magnified and becomes inverted if one moves away from the mirror, the mirror is a concave mirror. (b) Focal length of a spherical mirror is the distance between pole and principal focus of mirror. Thus focal length f = PE. |

Explain the parallel combination of resistors and derive the formula of equivalent resistance. |
|
Answer» Solution :Two or more than two resistors are said to be connected in parallel if one end of each resistor is connected to one point and the other end is connected to another point so that more than one paths are AVAILABLE for the current to flow and potential difference across each resistor is the same and is equal to the applied potential difference between the two common points. Three resistors with resistances, `R_1, R_2 and R_3` are connected in parallel between points A and B as shown in the figure 12.16 (a). Here. the current I gets divided at point A amongst three resistors as shown in the figure. The VALUE of the current FLOWING through each . resistor depends on the value of its resistance. ![]() Let`I_1, I_2 and I_3` be the currents flowing through the resistors with resistances `R_1, R_2 and R_3`respectively. `:. I =I_1+I_2 + I_3` ... ... (12.12) In a parallel COMBINATION of resistors, thepotential difference across every resistor is equal < to the potential difference V of the battery.According to Ohm.s law, `I_1 = V/R_1 ,I_2 = V/R_2 and I_3 = V/R_3` `:. I_1 = V /R_1 + V/R_2 + V/R_3.......(12.13)` Now, if a resistor with resistance `R_p`, instead of three resistors with resistances `R_1, R_2 and R_3`,is connected in the circuit such that the current flowing through the circuit remains thesame as I then `R_p` is called the eqUivalent resistance of the circuit [see figure (b)). `I = V/R_p` ......(12.14) From equation (12.13). `V/R_p =V/R_1 +V/R_2 + V/R_3` `:. 1/(R_p)= 1/(R_1) + 1/R_2 + 1/R_3` Thus, in a parallel combination of resistors, the sum of the reciprocals of the individual resistances is equal to the RECIPROCAL of the eqUivalent resistance `R_p.R_p`is less than any of ? the individual resistances in the circuit. |
