Name the parts of the eye which help in this phenomena and state how they help.

Answer»

Solution :The human eye has the ability to adjust its FOCAL length according to the distance of object, which is known as power of accomodation. While viewing DISTANT objects, CILIARY muscles of the eye relax which makes the eye les thinner. This increases the focal length of the eye lens so that a clear image of the object is formed on the retina. While viewing nearby objects, ciliary muscles CONTRACT which increases the curvature of the eye lens. This decreses the focal length of the eye lens so that a clear image of the object is formed on the retina.

What is lens formula ? Give its sign conventions and assumptions.

Answer»

Solution :If u is the distance of object and v, the distance of image from optical centre of the lens, then focal LENGTH f is related to u and b by
`1/f=1/v-1/u`
which is called lens formula. The formula is equally applicable to CONVEX, concave or any other type of lens (e.g., concavo-convex, plano-convex, convexo-concave, plano-concave etc.).
Sign COnventions. 1. The object is always placed to the left of the lens.
2. All distances parallel to principal AXIS are MEASURED from optical centre of the lens.
3. All distance measured to the right of optical centre (along x-axis) are taken as positive while those measured to the left of the optical centre (along x-axis) are taken as negative.
4. Distances measured perpendicular to and above the principal axis (along y-axis) are taken as positive.
5. Distances measured perpendicular to and below the principal axis (y.-axis) are taken as negative.
Assumptions. 1. Object is taken on principal axis.
2. The lens is thin.

State Newton's Universal Law of Gravitation. Explain how the value of the Gravitational constant can be determined by Cavendish method.

Answer»

Solution :Newton's law of GRAVITATION : Every BODY in the universe attracts every other body with a force which is directly proprotinal to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.
`F prop m_1M-2" and " F prop (1)/(d^2)" or "F prop (m_1m_2)/(d^2)` or `F=(Gm_1m_2)/(d^2)`
This is always a force of attraction and acts along the line joining the two bodies.
Canvendish experiment to find gravitationl constant 'G' : Cavedish experiment consists of a long METALIC rod AB to which two small lead spheres of mass 'm' are attached.
This rod is suspended from a rigid support with the help of a thin WIRE. Two heavy spheres of mass M are brought near tothese small spheres in opposite direction. Then gravitational force will act between the spheres.

Force between the spheres, `F=(GMm)/(d^2)`
Two equal and opposite forces acting at the ends of the rod AB will develop force couple and the rod will ROTATE through an angle `'theta'`.
Torque on the rod `FxxL=(GM*m)/(d^2)L to (1)`
Restoring force couple= `tautheta to(2)`
Where `tau` =Restoring couple per unit twist
`:. tau theta=(GMm)/(d^2)L" or " G=(tau*theta d^2)/(MmL)`
By measuring `theta` we can calculate 'G' value when other parameters are known.
Practical value of G is `6.67xx10^(-11) Nm^2`/`kg^2`.

Explain how the heating effect of electric current is utilized in an electric bulb (called incandescent lamp) to produce light.

Answer»

Solution :When an electric current passes through a very thin, high-resistance TUNGSTEN filament ofan electric bulb, the fflament becomes white-hot and emits light.
Here, tungsten metal is used for making the filament of an electric bulb because it has a very high melting point (of `3380^@C`). Due to its very high melting point, the tungsten filament can be kept white-hot without melting away.

The other properties of tungsten which make it SUitable for making filament of an electric bulb are its high flexibility and law rate of evaporation at high temperature.
If air is PRESENT in an electric bulb, then theextremely hot tungsten filament would burn upquickly in the presence of oxygen in air.
So, the electric bulb is filled With a CHEMICALLY nonreactive (INACTIVE) gas like argon or nitrogen (or a mixture of both). The gases like argan and nitrogen do not react with the hot tungsten filament and HENCE prolong the life of the filament of the electric bulb.
In electric bulb, most of the electric energy for(power) consumed by the filament appears as heat (due to which the bulb becomes hot), only a small amount of electric energy (power) isconverted into light.
So, filament type electric bulbs are notpower- efficient. On the other hand, tube lights are much more power efficient because they haveno filaments.

What is meant by power of a lens ? Write its SI unit. A student uses a lens of focal length 40 cm and another of -20 cm. Write the nature and power of each lens.

Answer»

SOLUTION :The power (P) of a lens is defined as the reciprocal of its focal length (f) expressed in metre.
Thus, `P = (1)/(f ("in m"))`
SI unit of power is dioptre (D), where 1 D = 1 `m^(-1)`
The focal length of lens used by ONE student `f_(1) = + 40 CM = + 0.4`m
`therefore` The lens is a convex lens and the power of lens `P_(1) = (1)/(f_(1)) = (1)/(0.4) = + 2.5` D
Again the focal length of lens used by another student, `f_(2) = - 20 cm = - 0.2 m`
`therefore` The lens is a concave lens and the power of lens `P_(2) = (1)/(f_(2)) = (1)/((-0.2)) = - 5.0` D
