Oxygen is necessary for complete oxidation ofglucose. |
| Answer» Solution :(1)When glucose is completely oxidized in aerobic cellular respiration , it produces 38 molecules of ATP . (2) In cellular respiration, THREE processestake place one place one after the other, these are GLYCOLYSIS, Krebs cycle and electron transport chain reactions. (3) In absence of oxygen only glycolysis can occur but further TWO reactions will not take place. If glycolysis OCCURS in absence of oxygen, it produces alcohol. (4) By anaerobic glycolysis only two molecules of ATP are produced. This results in less energy supply to the body. Therefore, oxygen is necessary for complete oxidation of glucose. | |

Define Hooke's law of elasticity, proportionality, permanent set and breaking stress. |
|
Answer» Solution :Hooke.s Law : If states that within elastic limit, stress is proportional to strain. `"i.e., stress"prop"strain"rArr("stress")/("strain")="constant(E)."` This constant is called elastic constant `(E).` Proportionality limit : When load is incresed the elongation of the wire will also increases. The maximum load upto which the elongation is directly proportional to the load iscalled PROPOR- tionality limit `(A).` The graph DRAWN between load and EXTENSION. It is straight line .OA.. Permanent set : If the load on the wire is increased be- yond elastic limit, the elongation is not pro- portional to load. On removal of the load the wire cannot regain its original LENGTH. The length of the wire increases permanently. In figure permanent set is given byOP. This is called permanent set. Breaking stress : If the load is incresed beyond yield poin the elongation is very rapid, even for small changes in load and wire becomes THINNER and breaks. This is shown as E. The breaking force per unit area is called breaking stress. |

Name two energy sources that you would consider to be renewable. Give reason for your choices. |
|
Answer» Solution :Two renewable energy sources are: (a) Sun: The energy DERIVED from the sun is called SOLAR energy Solar energ is produced by the FUSION of hydrogen into helium, fusion of helium into other heavy elements, and so on. A large amount of hydrogen and helium is present in the sun. So, solar energ can replenish on its own. The sun has 5 billion years more to burn. Hence, solar energy is a renewable energy source. (b) Wind: Wind energy is derived from air blowing with high speed. Wind energy is harnessed by windmills to generate ELECTRICITY. Air blows because of UNEVEN heating of the earth. Since the heatingof the earth shall continue for ever, wind energy shall also be available for ever. |

The image of an object formed by a mirror is real, inverted and is of magnification - 1. If the image is at the distance of 30 cm from the mirror.(i) Where is the object placed ?(ii) Find the position of the image object is now moved 20 cm towards the mirror.(iii) What is the nature of the image obtained ? Justify your answer with the help of ray diagram. |
|
Answer» Solution :IMAGE of an object FORMED by a mirror is real, inverted indicates that the mirror is a CONCAVE mirror and that the image is formed on the same side as the object. (i) `m=-1 , v=-30 cm` `m =-(v)/(U)` `-l=-((-30)/(u)), u=-30` cm is the object distance (ii) Find focal length of the concave mirror using data from 1. `(1)/(v)=(1)/(u)=(1)/(f)` `(1)/((-30))+(1)/((-30))=(1)/(f), f=-15 cm` `u=-10 cm , f=-15 cm, v = ?` `(1)/(v)+(1)/(u)=(1)/(f)` `(1)/(v)+(1)/((-10))=(1)/((-15)), v = +30 cm` The + sign indicates that the image is formed behind the concave mirror (iii) `m=-(v)/(u)` `m=-((30)/(-10)), m = 3` The image is erect, virtual and enlarged

With a neat labelled diagram, explain twinkling of a star. Also explain why a planet does not twinkle. |
| Answer» Solution :Since planets are quite near the EARTH in comparison with the stars, they DONOT act as pointsources but behavelike extended SOURCES. Planets may be considered as collection of a large number of point sized sourcesof light. The total NET deviation in amount of light entering our eyes from different pointsources is zero. Therefore there is no net twinkling of planets. | |

Explain the function of an earth wire. Why is it necessary to earth metallic appliances ? |
| Answer» Solution :EARTH wire is used as a safety measure especially for those appliances that have a metallic body, for EXAMPLE - electric press, TOASTER etc. The metallic body is connected to the earth wire, which provides a low RESISTANCE conducting path for the current. Thus it ensures that any leakage of current to the metallic body of the appliances keeps its potential to that of the earth and the user may not get a severe shock. | |

State the merits and demerits of a series cnmbination of resistors. |
|
Answer» Solution :Merits: ( 1 ) The total resistance in the circuit can be increased by connecting the resistors in series. This decreases the current in the circuit. Thus, to control the current in the circuit, the series combination of resistors is USEFUL. ( 2 ) The fuse is CONNECTED in series with AC mains as well as in an electrical appliance and in the domestic electric connection. Therefore, whenever a short circuit occurs in any electrical appliance, the fuse wire melts and stops the electric current. As a RESULT, damage to the electrical appliances can be prevented. Demerits: ( 1 ) If the electrical applinaces are connected in series, the applied voltage is divided across every appliance, e.g., if three IDENTICAL bulbs operating on 240V are connected in series with supply voltage of 240V, each bulb gets 80V. Each bulb at 80V cannot give light efficiently as compared to its voltage capacity. In short, they will give dim light. ( 2 ) In a series combination, if a fault occurs in one appliance or the circuit breaks, then the current does not flow in the circuit and hence all other appliances stop working, e.g., if one of the three bulbs gets fused, other two bulbs do not light up. |

A spherical lens is used to obtain an image on a screen. The size of the image is four times and size of the object . What is the type of lens and at what distance is the screen placed from the lens ? |
|
Answer» Solution :Data : `M=-4`, TYPE of lens ?V=? As the iamge FORMED by the lens is obtained on a screen , it is a real image. The lens is , therefore, a convex lens. `M=-4 v/utherefore u=-v/4` `1/f =1/v- 1/u=1/v-(1)/((-v//4))=1/v+(4)/(v)=(5)/(v)` `therefore v=5f` The DISTANCE of the screen from the lens =5f. |
