Describe an activity to determine the direction of magnetic field produced by a current carrying straight conductor. Also show that the direction of the magnetic field is reversed on reversing the direction of current. |
|
Answer» Solution :Take a battery (12 V), a variable resistance (or a rheostat), an AMMETER (0 - 5A), a plug key and a long straight thick copper wire. Insert the thick wire through the centre, normal to the plane of a rectangular CARDBOARD. Take care that the cardboard is FIXED and does not slide up or down. Connect the copper wire vertically between the points X and Y, in series with the battery, a plug and key. Sprinkle some iron fillings uniformly on the cardboard. Keep the variable of the rheostat at a fixed position and note the current through ammeter. Close the key, so that current flows through the wire. Ensure that the copper wire placed between the points X and Y remains vertically straight. Gently tap the cardboard for a few times. Observe the pattern of the iron filings. You would FIND that the iron filings align themselves showing a pattern of concentric circles around the copper wire. This represents the magnetic field around the current- carrying conductor. The direction of magnetic field CHANGES on reversing the direction of current.

What is atmospheric refraction ? Use this phenomenon to explain the following natural events : (i) Twinkling of stars (ii) Advanced sunrise and delayed sunset. Draw diagram to illustrate your answer. |
|
Answer» Solution :The density of the atmosphere goes on decreasing as the distance above the sea level increases. Hence, the REFRACTIVE index of AIR also decreases. So, light from the sun or other stars undergo MULTIPLE refractions before reaching our eyes. This phenomenon is called as atmospheric REFRACTION. Variations in refractive index of different regions in the atmosphere due to atmospheric refraction causes the variations in intensity of the star light reaching our eyes. Hencee the stars appear to be twinkling. Atmospheric refraction causes the light rays coming from the sun to be bent. So, the sun which is actually at a position below the horizon, APPEARS in the position above the horizon to a person on the earth. Thus, the Sun appears to rise early by about 2 minutes and set late by about 2 minutes.

Explain the nature and scope of the disaster of flood with the help of six points . |
|
Answer» Solution :The nature and the scope of the disaster of flood can be described according to the six points : Pre-disaster phase : Due to Indian Meteorological Department the warning predictions are are received before any climatic disaster strikes. If th e scope of the flood is predicted to be high, then the people who may be affected by the calamity are relocated to a safer area. (2) Warning ph . ase . In the warning phase the Government warns the general public about the forthcoming disaster of floods through mass media like radio, television, newspapers, etc. In recent times event he cellphone messages are sent to people for warning them. The people living in coastal areas will be worst affected and hence such people are given greater care and they are immediately made toleave their houses. They are taken to the safe places. (3) Emergency phase : When the flood waters actually start rising up, the low-lying areas are submerged. Houses, roads and shops everything goes under water. The rescue operations are CARRIED out by army men from National Disaster Rescue Force. They take every possible effort to rescue the trapped people. The emergency continues till the water does not recede. Later after the water starts receding, people who had been taken to places on heights, start coming back. During this phase, search, rescue operations, medical treatment, and first aid are all the aspects on which the attention is focussed. (4) Rehabilitation phase : The people affecteddue to floods are given emotional and financial support. The fields, farms, houses or cattle-shed are under water. Such people are given transient accommodations. Many cattle and other animals die by drowning. Their rotting carcasses have to be disposed as soon as possible because the decaying process SPREADS epidemics of diseases. People are given vaccinations to protect them from diseases of such kind. Special care of young children and senior citizens is taken during this period. Supply of food and drinking water is also very important task during this time. (5) Recovery phase : During recovery phase, the life comes gradually back to normalcy. The removal of dead, decaying MATERIAL and the debris is the first priority. The water connections and electricity is restored back. Various NGOs or Government organizations provide help of various kind to the affected people. This help is to be distributed to those who are in real need. This work is also done byDisaster Management Department. (6) Reconstruction phase : The houses and building that collapse due to floods are built back. Agri.cultural activiti.es start again. Roads and water supply is once again NORMALIZED. Schools and colleges start once again. THUS, the once flood affected area comes back to routine functioning again. |

Explain the working of an astronomical telescope using refraction of light. |
Answer» Solution :An astronomical telescope is an optical instrument which is used to SEE the magnified image of distant heavenly bodies like stars, planets, satellites and galaxies, etc. ![]() Construction of Astronomical Telescope 1. An astronomical telescope consists of two CONVEX lenses, an objective lens and an eye piece. 2.Objective lens has diameter and larger focal length because of which maximum amount of light coming from the distant object can be collected. 3. On the other hand, the size of the eyepiece is smaller and its focal length is also less. 4. Both the lenses are fitted inside a metallic tube in such a way that the distance between them can be changed. 5. The principal axes of both the lenses are along the same STRAIGHT line. 6. Generally, using the same objective but different eye pieces, different amgnification can be obtained. Working of Astronomical Telesecope: 1. A parallel beam of light from a heavenly body such as stars, plantes or satellites falls on the objective lens of the telescope. 2. The objective lens forms a real, inverted and diminished image of the heavenly body. This image lies between the focus and the optical centre of the eye piece. 3. Now the eye piece forms a virtual, inverted and highly magnified image of object at infinity. When the final image of an object is formed at infinity, the telescope is said to be in 'normal adjustment'. 4. It should be noted that, the final image of object ( such as stars, planets or satellites) formed by an astronmical telescope is always inverted with respectto the object . But is does not matter WHETHER the image formed by an astronomaical telesocope is inverted or not, as all the heavenly bodies are usually sphrerical is shape. |

An electric oven of 2 kW power rating is operated in a domestic electric circuit (220 V) that has a current rating of 5 A. What result do you expect? Explain. |
|
Answer» <P> Solution :POWER, `P=2kW=2xx1000W=2000W`Voltge, `V=220V` CURRENT drawn, `I=?` Power, `P=V xx I` `I=(P)/(V)=(2000)/(220)` `=9A` (approx) The current drawn by this electric oven is 9A whereas the fuse in the circuit is only 5 A capacity. When a high current of 9 A flows throughthe 5 A fuse, the fuse will get heated too much, MELT and break the circuit. Therefore, when a 2 kW power rating electric oven is operated in a circuithaving 5 A fuse, the fuse will blow off cutting off the power supply in this circuit. |
