Solve : Inline Counter?

Answer»

Is there a way to make an inline counter?? Like so that when other PEOPLE go on, it counts but other people viewing the site don't see how many people have viewed it?? So that only I can see it.? or so that everytime someone VIEWS it, I get some sort of email?/// :-? :-?Ah, Mr. Google, you didn't Google for this, did you?  Shame, shame.  There are many hit counters; see http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=hit+counters&btnG=Search.  However, many of the free ones will display a visible hit counter on the page.  If you want a counter that does not appear on the page, you may have to use a fee-based service.  In that case, you would be probably logon to a WEBSITE to see the stats for your site.

If you use a fee-based hosting service, you might also take a look at the site stats in your web server admin panel for your site.  Most hosting services provide a way for clients to view statistics on website traffic.  However, this may be in quite a different format than the stats you would get from an independent hit counter service.  If your web server is PHP-enabled (in fact this will work with any server-side technology) you can simply increment a counter contained in a text file or database, viewable only by you.

How would you like to proceed?Well, I am using mbhosting at the moment and I think it is php enabled. So Would you care to give a small explanation?There are some URL tracking service through PHP. You need to study a PHP
tutorial and possibly, MYSQL also).

You really don't need to study ANYTHING deep. Just a introductory knowledge
and in those tracking service you will get instructions on how to implement.You can create a simple page view counter like this:

Code: [Select]<?php

// Change this to something suitable - one file per web page!
$filename = '/path/to/trackingfile';

// If file doesn't exist, create it and set contents to zero
if (!file_exists($filename)) {
  $handle = fopen($filename", 'w');
  fwrite($handle, '0');
  fclose($handle);
}

$counter=file_get_contents($filename);
$counter++;
file_put_contents($filename, $counter);

?>This works for PHP 5+ but would need re-writing for earlier versions.  Put it at the top of the page that you want to track.  Make sure it's a .php page rather than .html.

Solve : SEO?

Answer»

Looking for Search Engine Optimization.....

Do you do it yourself or hire someone?
If you hire someone, can you recommend them?

Do you have any tips/tricks/warnings that you would like to share? (regarding SEO)Here's some INFO straight from Google: What's an SEO? Does Google recommend working with companies that offer to make my site Google-friendly? .  And, of course, there are many hits from a search on SEO: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=SEO&btnG=Google+Search[size=14]Search Engine industry is continually changing. You need to know which of major SEs is powering which of the smaller search engines and then you can know where you can focus your optimizationefforts.

For example, Google has control over some free and paid listings of AOL, netscape, hotbot, Ask Jeeves, Teoma and Lycos.

Yahoo also control other Smaller SEs.

The point is that by inserting yor site into a bigger SE, you can also automatically include it into smaller SEs (in their free or paid versions)

Here are 5 don'ts that you should not include in your SEO process.

1) Irrelevant links:
Don't link with sites that does not match the theme of that of your site. If you are a web hosting site try to link at least with a site that deals with autoresponder, if you feel that linking with a web hosting site will INCREASE your competition.

2) Don't keyword stuff your meta tags:
SEs will punish you if you do that. Input not more than 3 keywords there.

3) Irrlevant keywords:
They can penalize you if you use irrelevant keywords in your title, meta tags, and URL.

4) Don't use doorway pages containing only keywords:
If you use many doorway pages containing only many keywords and not containing good content you are likely to be banned.

5) Avoid the FFA pages:
Don't post there. Such sites have extremely low RATINGS and you will lose your ranking points.

Here is tips on improving your search engine ranking:

1) Use RSS feeds:

Create RSS feed for your pages and then post them to RSS feed directories.

2) Also you can download the Google Toolbar and
then find the pagerank of various classified sites. Choose those sites with  a pagerank  of at least 4, then post an AD related to your site there. This will boost your site's ranking.

Solve : Free web hosting and design help??

Answer» DEAR friends:  I am looking for someplace that offers free web hosting as well as help in building a decent looking website.  I USED to use GEOCITIES.  It had good templates for background choice, fonts, page dividers, site visitor counters, links, uploads for pics., and it worked at a level for me:  absolutely simple.  Now, the country I live in has blocked geocities (oof!), not Yahoo, just geocities, so I am looking for a place to rebuild.  I have checked out a couple of place from my google search like webspawn but I couldn't find out how to change the font, or choose a nice background or get my pictures up there.
 any suggestions?
Thanks
Dr. JalaliWell.... This site I'm going to give you does NOT give you software to help build, but is great if you have design software already... Have a look... http://www.hostultra.com ...

[GLB]Flame[/glb]Thanks for the hosting site.  Now, what is the best program to use to build it  I have Front Page in my microsoft office.  Is there anything better that is availabie, gulp, for free?
ThanksMicrosoft Frontpage is a very good program... I use IBM myslef, which is an older program... Frontpage should work well for you... Unless you will be using a lot of flash animations, or are looking for a more user-friendly program...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Flame,

Don't let Microsoft SEE you imply that Front Page is not user friendly.  They might come to your house and beat you with a rubber hose.   That's why I never call them for support...    lol

[glb]Flame[/glb]I use Marcromedia Dreamweaver.

Its free to use for 30days but then it costs somthing like £350

i cant remember, But i bought it and it is gamn good. very easy to use

RossI use Macromedia Dreamweaver as well, I like it a lot better than FrontPage.  But if you're looking for a FREE web design program, you should check out Nvu.  Although not as great as the other two, it'll probably help you get the job done and best of all..... it's completely free and it's available for Windows and Linux. If you need additional help, you can reach me at ResourcePC.

DaveFor a good webhost, i used freewebtown, it has UNLIMITED SPACE and you can sue FTP, the bad part is that you cant use PHP, CGI, and SQL files

Solve : Web on Server 2003: question?

Answer»

Alright here it goes.  I have a trial for Server 2003 installed on a system I'm going to use as a server. On this server, I have enabled the web services and copied my website files to the wwwroot directory. Alas, I am unable to access the site from another computer.  At the moment, the server is not connected to the internet because I have dial up but am getting boadband LATER this week. My computers are connected VIA a linksys router switch and I have enabled port forwarding to send all HTTP requests to the 'server', which has a static address.  I can access files on my server from this computer, I use Remote Desktop to access the sever.

Any IDEAS as to why I am unable to get the the web page when going to the servers IP address (with and without the port number after the IP address)?I'm afraid that some routers simply won't let you do this.  Switch port forwarding off on the router to test this.  Then in the browser on your computer, enter in the address: 'http://192.168.1.79' - or whatever the IP address is for your server on the LAN.  You may find that you can now see the web server.

Report back?Sorry for the delay in my response, things keeping me busy.

ANYWAY, I went in and tried it without the port forwarding and it worked, then I turned it back on and it still worked. I don't know why. *shrugs*

In the end though, I decided to us WAMP instead of IIS, for me it's easier to configure.  Thanks for the response though, I wanted to be able to do it in IIS incase I need to later on. Quote

I decided to us WAMP instead of IIS
Good choice!    In this case, is your 'P' PHP, Perl or Python?Nothing yet, lol. I'm don't have any skill in any computer language except some HTML and some Flash Scripts. lol.   When I have time (Right now working on getting my CCNA and NET+ certs) I'll look into each one and make a choice.Tried 'em all.  They excel in different areas, but for web design, database connectivity and ease of use, I favour PHP.

hi, can anyone tell me where could I find a free PHP/PHPs for my new website. the php I need is the one for making a small buck on the internet...I want to build a website for pay to click, pay to promote and all that. there are so many sites that don't pay on the www that I feel I need to do something about it...and my solution is building my own...but I don't have the PHPs to do it....If somebody could tell me where to take the PHPs needed or if someone could send them to me FOR FREE I would be most grateful. thanks www.stefysoft.comHave a google search   or use p2p - Emule

I qot a question as well to CH, If you website make money buy selling product does VAT and TAX are involve, do i have to pay tax?Elixir : I already tried google....but its all about the money...you know that ...about the VAT and TAX : it depends...are you a honest person and are you in the USA because in the USA, the famous IRS will get you if you dont pay taxes...I'm from Romania, the IRS people here are too stupid to be true and besides that, they don't have the means to get me   Good for me http://www.stefysoft.com
and by the way, I'm not trying to sell anything, just to become an advertiser...and make some honest, small cashI said use p2p - Emule v0.47 they contain over a 100 of free php script i have look already.

LOL.  Well, the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) is the name of the federal taxing authority in the U.S.A.  Obviously, other countries will have their own names for their governmental agencies.

In the U.S., taxpayers can get a lot of information on tax questions by going directly to the appropriate federal, state, or local taxing authority.  I think you need to do the same in the UK.  You should be able to approach them as though you're asking a question in anticipation of going into business if you want to avoid discussing your actual situation.  However, I would hope that you're not a tax evader.

 8-) I already knew what IRS stands for...but being from Romania and not knowing where he is from I gave the most eloquent example: the famous IRS....they say the IRS agents are allowed to carry guns and even use them...is that true?alex116, most IRS employees do not carry guns.  However, the IRS does have a division with Special Agents who are authorized to carry guns.  They generally investigate the worst cases of tax evasion.  So, I think it should be no surprise that they would carry guns.Soybean : I think that the IRS (in the USA) members are the only tax agents allowed to carry guns...in Romania, they aren't even allowed to ask what your name is   ...the laws in Romania (not only the tax related ones) are pretty permissive...so...tax evasion is not detected that mush...their database system is not well updated and corruption is very high...I confess that I evaded taxes more than once...in different circumstancesDear Alex,

"This attitude"?

For those of us that pay their taxes and attempt to live an honest life, yes it can be rather irksome to hear other people brag about how they abuse the system.  And yet, presumably those people are perfectly happy to make use of the services that other tax payers are paying for.

Sorry, I have no patience for it.  Should I have?

And yes, I know that life is not always easy in Romania (my brother-in-law is Romanian), but it seems to me that the answer to corruption is not to try and cheat the system.  It just puts you at exactly the same level as the people whose corruption you despise.  Things are after all improving in Romania, and that by virtue of people who have fought (and lost their lives in many cases) fighting to irradicate corruption and dictatorship.

Actually the pay in I.T. is pretty good, thanks.  (Better than law in fact.  I'm leaving law completely for a full time I.T. career starting September, since you expressed an interest.)

Now, back to your I.T. problem: what exactly do you want PHP code to do for your website? Quote

Now, back to your I.T. problem: what exactly do you want PHP code to do for your website?

I need I think more than one PHP to build a webpage that has a Paid to Click, Paid to Promote, Paid to Read Emails, Paid to Signup and all that *censored*...I want to build a website to pay people for clicking promoting and so on and so forth....I haven't found yet such a PHP for free...maybe you can help me...direct me to where I can find one or maybe send it to me if you have it....Before you go down that route, have you considered Google syndication?  That's probably the easiest way of getting up and running with that kind of thing.  Who are your trading partners going to be?

I doubt that you will find anything like this for free, because in almost all cases it's going to involve merchant facilities and/or two way communication between you and your trading partners.  Those kind of things tend to be bespoke.

Bottom line: where/who is the money going to be coming from? Quote
Bottom line: where/who is the money going to be coming from?

The money is going to come from companies to whom I apply to be an advertiser. People will click their ads, I WILL GIVE those people money for clicking and I'll take a small amount of it....I think you are aware that this kind of sites are widely spread nowadays ESPECIALLY in the US. The thing is that I know a lot about this kind of sites...that's why I chose this kind of ecommerce...I can get people to click the links/banners...the problem is that I can't manage to make that website....because, to be honest, I don't have the money for it...Start by googling for "PHP referral scripts".  You're going to have to accept, I think, that you will have to learn some coding skills yourself, particularly if you're not going to pay anyone else to help you with this.  Probably the different companies will have slightly different REQUIREMENTS.  In order to accommodate them all, you'll need to tailor the scripts to their individual needs.  Therefore coding skills will be a must, together with database design skills.

You can get something for nothing on the internet, but you can very rarely get a bespoke something for nothing.  PHP coders have to eat too.  i found a good site where you could download full PHP scripts

i think it was called phpresources.com <----- or something like thatI looked via www.alltheweb.com and searched for free PHP.
Below some results.
Maybe it can help you.
I just start to try to make a website and use  HTMLpad2006 from http://www.blumentals.net

Solve : Need an alternative to "text area"?

Answer»

I have recently created a new website. I would LIKE to create a TEXT area with a scrollbar (like the one i am currently typing in), but my website host will not allow it. Each text area TAG that I attempt to insert into the HTML code box brings up an  error SAYING : "Error: the HTML may not contain a "textarea" tag. "
I know that there has to be a way around this, because sites that also use the free website host "Piczo" have text boxes on their sites. Is there another code that I may use that does not contain a "text area" tag?

Solve : MySQL not configuring correctly?

I also POSTED this QUESTION on the mySQL forums. After getting brushed off with a "common solution" that unsurprisingly did not work (I didn't have a MySQL service at the time... how was I supposed to remove it with a third-party program if it didn't exist?). Browsing back, one guy got a solution by uninatalling and installing it to a 8.3-compliant directory. This I tried, but it didn't work.

This morning after reading your post, I attempted to install (I had to uninstall again) MySQL. It locked up, however, trying to connect to MySQL.com. I couldn't get it to shut down, so I hit Reset. After it rebooted, I RAN setup again, CHOOSING "repair" since it was already somewhat installed. After that, I ran the config wizard and to my surprise, it went without a hitch. I'm in the command-line client now, but I'm still baffled how that managed to work. Don't.  Even.  Breathe.

Solve : How can I make my own forum??

Answer»

Yes.  Already told you.

You NEED a hand GETTING started?  Start with the database design; think what you'll need to record.  E.g.:

Date/time of posting
Email address of poster (will not necessarily be displayed)
NAME of poster
Text of message (consider whether you'll want to provide a UBB code feature, or just plain text - allowing HTML is not a good plan unless you can write a REALLY good parsing sanity checker)
An approved/not approved field, if you want to moderate all messages
IP address of poster (although it may be spoofed if you do not guard against that) Quote

If you have a MySQL database already, you can just create another table within that database.  You don't have to keep it separate.

Solve : How to center page when opened by a hi res browser?

Answer»

I am learning how to build a Web page using HTML. Although I can use a Web tool that ALLOWS me to set the properties to center, I do not know how to do this in HTML. I designed my screen for 800X600 which looks fine, but when viewed with a higher resolution the page the contents are on the left. Note: although I can use  “Site Builder” to correct this problem, I want to do it in a Text file in HTML code.You could wrap anything you want centred in a single DIV:<div align='center'>
 Blah blah
 </div>
Or you could use CSS: <###style>
body
{
   margin-left: auto;
   margin-right: auto;
}
<###/style>
(Remove the '###'.)  Not sure all browsers will correctly handle that CSS though.Thanks, Rob the   Blah blah   worked and was simple.Great.  JOB done.

Solve : Transferring MySQL databases?

Anyone know how to explain this in the most dumbed-down way possible for a newbie?The question you need to ask is what mechanisms do your old and new hosts provide for importing/exporting MySQL databases?  If they both provide phpMyAdmin, then it's pretty easy to do a full export and a full import.  Is this offered?  Do they allow you a shell account access (in which case you'd be able to use the command line MySQL tools)?Both have phpMyAdmin. I'm not sure about shell account access.
I've DONE a export from the old host, but I don't know how to import it to the new one.Okay, having phpMyAdmin available MAKES things a lot simpler.  When you export a database to a file, what you actually do is create a list of SQL commands to reconstruct the database.  So in order to "import" the database, you actually have to "run" it.

Note that phpMyAdmin does not seem to recreate the database - just the tables.  So create all the relevant databases (probably just one if you've got all your phpBB tables in one place); then you're ready to run the SQL.

To do that, log into phpMyAdmin on your new host.  Create the database (if you've not already done so) and select it.  Then bring up a query window - in the current VERSION of phpMyAdmin, that involves clicking on the correct icon in the LEFT hand panel.  On my version, it is a little window with SQL written in it.

This will bring up a popup window.  Choose Import Files.  Browse for your .sql file and click go.  You're done.How do I know if it's importing? After I hit Go it just sits there  :-?There isn't a progress bar, I'm afraid.  You just need to wait.  A large database will take quite a while to import.  You can try flipping to the main phpMyAdmin screen, and looking for the new tables.  If the import is working, you should see them.It seems my server times out and logs me out before it's able to transfer (if it's even TRANSFERRING at all). Is there a way I could break it down to smaller files and import part at a time?Absolutely.  Could be a little tedious, but it can be done.  I guess the tables that you're transferring must be fairly large.

On the export page you'll see an option "DUMP [      ] row(s) starting at record # [      ]".  I don't know how large the tables are, but you can use that to split them up into smaller sections.

Solve : Just One Page?

Answer»

Hi guys.

I have just bought a domain from a company, but all I am looking to do with it, is to host one really simple webpage.
The cheapest the company (where I bought the domain) could offer me was there basic starter hosting package which is £34 (approx $50) for the year. I know this isn't much, but because I only need a very small amount of space, I wondered if there was an even easier and cheaper way to get around this.

Many thanks for any replies posted.
Kop442000The cheapest way, if you're already on broadband, is to host the web page on your own computer.  Does that idea interest you?You can do that? How?Simply run a web server. Of course, it means that your machine must be running 24/7 and a good portion of your bandwidth may be consumed.There's just a little bit more to it than that, and I'm not sure the word "simply" is entirely appropriate in this context.

If you don't have a static IP address, you'll need access to a dynamic DNS service such as that provided by dyndns.org.  Even if you have a static IP address, the DynDNS services allow you to convert that into something more memorable than numbers.  E.g. I use pcproblemsolver.dyndns.biz.

If you run a web server within your home (or business) network and set up your router/firewall to allow traffic to reach it, the outside world can access your personal web site by that means.  Doing things on a low budget, I would recommend running Apache rather than Microsoft's very poor Personal Web Server.  Apache is free for download, and is very fast and well suited to almost all web purposes.

Yes, you will probably need to keep your web server and ADSL connection on permanently, but I think that still works out cheaper than most hosting options.  And you can upgrade your web service for free - e.g. by adding PHP and MySQL, something that ISPs often charge extra for.

As for bandwidth, remember we're talking about upstream bandwidth here, i.e. from your computer outwards.  Your broadband will typically be 1Mbps downstream (towards you) but much less than this upstream - 128Kbps or less is common.  So you wouldn't be able to run an extremely popular web site over broadband.  There just isn't enough bandwidth.  It's plenty for most home uses however.  People accessing your website from outsite will not noticeably slow down your own online experience, since you will usually have much more downstream bandwidth to spare.PS  I may have my upstream and downstream muddled up there, but the gist is correct!!!   Thanks for the posts guys.

Will have a think about all that.

Cheers.So, basically, if I run my own server people can only access it when I'm on my computer? Interesting... Um, I created an account and a host. How do I actually get the web site up there into the right place? Do I do that on the web site, or what?

[edit]Oh wait, I found that in HTML-Kit I can import a site from a URL, so I can work on it from there. I think. It's asking for Username and Password, and I put in my dynDNS username and password, but it won't accept it! Also, when I try to go to the service I created, it asks for username and password. I put them in, but it doesn't accept them! What am I doing wrong?[/edit]First of all, is it actually a website that you want to run or is it perhaps an FTP server for sharing files?

I run a private FTP server using Serv-U and No-IP. My address is ftp://myservername.no-ip.comJust an HTTP site. No downloads.

[edit]I should probably mention that I am working on parts of the site. It isn't yet complete, because I have some routine work to do on it. I would like to know how to do it so that when I'm done making sure that that table I made renders properly in all browsers I can, or making sure those hyperlinks work like they're supposed to, then I am able to put that site on there. [/edit]Dilbert, what web server are you using on your computer?  And what DynDNS client are you using?  (See the support section at DynDNS.)  How do you connect to the internet?  If you're using a router, have you ensured that external port 80 requests are forwarded to your PC?

Re the links - always use relative links, rather than absolute.  It makes testing so much easier.  That said, I often work on live sites (naughty) changing the files on the web server, rather than elsewhere+uploading and just test the changes as I go along.

Make sure you have the three big three browsers at least (Opera + Firefox + IE) for testing purposes.  In the case of IE, it is better for security to run one of the "wrapper" browsers like Maxthon or Slimbrowser, which are based on IE. Quote

Dilbert, what web server are you using on your computer?

This is going to sound dumb, but I don't know. How can I figure it out?

I'm looking all over the support section, and can't find info on it. Thinking it would help, I installed the Official Windows Update Client. What on Earth do I have to do?

Sorry for this guys, I don't mean to be such a hassle. Quote

No problem.  You're either not running one, or you're running Microsoft's Personal Web Server (a Windows component).  In the latter case, uninstall it.  In either case, get Apache and follow the installation instructions carefully.  I'm afraid there's a bit of a learning curve, but I'm sure that won't put you off.

Now would also be a good opportunity to obtain and install MySQL and PHP.  Then you have a very sophisticated web & database server running on your PC.  If you want to get into MySQL, also obtain PHPMyAdmin.  Invaluable for administering MySQL databases.

That's what you need.  It tells the DynDNS servers what your current IP address is (in fact the address of your router).

Which router?

Varies from router to router.  Grab the manual and look for "port forwarding".  Assign a static local IP address to your computer (don't use DHCP) and then forward the incoming port 80 requests to your PC's LAN IP address.

Don't be silly - if you've never done it before, why would you know?  Playing and trying things is the best way of learning.   Quote

I think the setup for Apache said something about allowing port 80 and I chose it. Would that do it?

To give your PC a static IP, first find out its current IP address.  (Network connections-->LAN-->Status).  Then change the properties for the connection so that instead of being given an address/netmask/DNS server, you assign them manually.  In fact you should be able simply to copy all of the entries from status; this will fix them.

Explanation: your computers are all on a subnet, and probably have IP addresses starting with 192.168.1.  For example, the Linksys may be set up as 192.168.1.1 and then have a built in DHCP server that assigns IP addresses to the LAN, starting from (say) .10.  Practice varies with each router.  So your computer may have a current IP address of 192.168.1.11.

If you can get access to the router's interface (you'll need that later), you should be able to discover what IP addresses it allocates.  It will usually only be a few (eg. from .10 to .20).  If you can find that out, it is best to give your PC a number NOT in that range - e.g. 192.168.1.200.

You'll need to read the router's manual.  It probably handles DNS requests for the LAN, so on your PC, enter the router's IP address as the DNS server (e.g. 192.168.1.1).

Whilst you're in the router, using the manual, set up port forwarding.  All incoming requests on port 80 need to be forwarded to your PC's IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.200) on port 80.  Make sure your PC's firewall allows incoming and outgoing connections on port 80.  So long as you keep your installation of Apache up to date with the latest security patches, this is pretty safe.

Now your router has an external IP address - the one the rest of the world sees.  To check to see if your web server is accessible to the outside world, first of all find out the router's current IP address (just use http://www.whatismyip.com/) and then enter that address in your browser's address bar, with http:// in front.  You should see your web server (unless your router specifically doesn't allow that kind of connection).

Report back!  OK, I'm a little stuck right at the beginning. I can see my IP address, and it's different from the one the DynDNS Updater has showing. OK, I'm going to leave a digit out for security, but:

My DynDNS thing says my IP is 71.111.188.2** because that's what www.whatismyip.com told me before I installed the thing. However, in my wireless connection settings, my IP is 192.168.1.**2. I can't find where to make it assign the address/netmask.DNS server manually on my Windows XP. My Local Area Connection is disabled because I have the wireless thing set up.

If it helps, this is what I see right now:

Yes - that's correct.  Your entire local network has only one IP address as far as the rest of the internet is concerned.  The router does something clever called "Network Address Translation" to ensure that information is router to the correct computer on the network.  Your local network has a particular range of IP addresses that is supposed to be private and not leak out to the rest of the internet.  Article A. Article B.  Those two articles will really help you understand what we're doing.

Your wireless connection is a LAN.  In that helpful picture you posted, the two places you need to look are: 1. Wireless connection 3 properties - scroll that list down to TCP/IP -click it, choose properties.  2. Wireless 3 connection status - click the support tab.OK. I am certainly NOT in a good mood right now. I had this conversation with my mother last night:

Mom: What's up, Tim? You look like you got a lot on your mind.
Me: Well, I found a way to host my own web site for free!
Mom: What is it?
Me: If I create my own server -
Mom: No.
Me: ...
Mom: No.
Me: Why not?
Mom: Because opening our network invites hackers to get in. And if they do, they could get into my computer and trash that. (Her computer has a lot of financial programs, budgets, that kind of thing.)
Me: ...
Mom: Do you have security for it?
Me: Yes!
Mom: What?
Me: I have Apache... it's a piece of freeware -
Mom: *shakes head*
Mom: I want to see everything you got drawn out on paper so you know EXACTLY what you've got.

OK. Is there any way to PROVE this is safe to her?Yup.  Go to Shields UP! and run their tests from any PC on your network.  Also, feel free to invite her to come here.  There are plenty of people here with I.T. qualifications and experience in securing networks.

It sounds to me like your mum doesn't really trust the hardware she's using - that's more of an issue, I would say.  If she trusts the hardware, then opening up port 80 from the router to your PC, running a secure piece of web server software, should not be any problem at all.

Please note that Apache is not "freeware" - it is part of the open source software movement.  That has considerably more credibility than a bit of free software.  You may like to point out to your mum that the industry-standard piece of software you have just downloaded is used on the vast majority of web servers used on the internet.  See the second graph on >this page< - Apache's share of the entire market - including security-conscious global corporations is holding at around 75%.  There's a very good reason for that!

Your mum needs to realise that opening up a designated port in this way does not really make her network any less safe.  If she is connecting to the internet with a computer that contains sensitive data, she must already ensure that she has adequate safeguards in place.  An internet-connected PC has a presence on the internet.  Your proposal does not change that.  You are not "opening up your network".  Neither are you sending and invitation to hackers.

Sorry if this scares your mum, but the hackers already know about your network, and they'll already be trying to find out what they can do about it.  This is the same for every internet-connected computer on the PLANET.  People run scripts testing every possible IP address and finding out what's there.  They do this continually until they find a weakness.  This is why security precautions are essential.

There is good news however; if you take all sensible precautions, then you can (for free) have basically government-standard security in place in your home.Ok. One step at a time, as usual. I went to Shields Up! and tested my first 1056 ports. My results:

ALL of them were Stealthed EXCEPT for Port 113, which was Closed. I'm unsure of how to Stealth it.

ALSO, I tried the file sharing bit. I am proud to say I put together this machine:

Quote
Attempting connection to your computer. . .
Shields UP! is now attempting to contact the Hidden Internet Server within your PC. It is likely that no one has told you that your own personal computer may now be functioning as an Internet Server with neither your knowledge nor your permission. And that it may be serving up all or many of your personal files for reading, writing, modification and even deletion by anyone, anywhere, on the Internet!

Your Internet port 139 does not appear to exist!
One or more ports on this system are operating in FULL STEALTH MODE! Standard Internet behavior requires port connection attempts to be answered with a success or refusal response. Therefore, only an attempt to connect to a nonexistent computer results in no response of either kind. But YOUR computer has DELIBERATELY CHOSEN NOT TO RESPOND (that's very cool!) which represents advanced computer and port stealthing capabilities. A machine configured in this fashion is well hardened to Internet NetBIOS attack and INTRUSION.

Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer.
All attempts to get any information from your computer have FAILED. (This is very uncommon for a Windows networking-based PC.) Relative to vulnerabilities from Windows networking, this computer appears to be VERY SECURE since it is NOT exposing ANY of its internal NetBIOS networking protocol over the Internet.

[edit]I was unable to spam myself with popups.

I'm thrilled. Who says Norton sucks? I love the fact that I am so strongly defended. If I can get 113 secured, it'll be all I need to present to my mother: "Nobody can hack me, I'm safe."

As a side-note, she offered to allow me to host my site on her Verizon account. I didn't bother to point out I was likely to still need a server.[/edit]Dilbert, my antivirus I got online and all of my ports are stealthed, I didn't get any spam messages, and all my files are protected

I don't think it has to do as much with your anti-virus. (But then again I wouldn't know)It's not my antivirus. I have antivirus, but I'm referring to Norton Internet Secutity 2005, which includes a firewall. Also, your ISP can help with that, as well as Windows Firewall.

Now, how would I get Port 113 stealthed, then?Oh, Ok. Well congratulations on having a secure computer

As for how to stealth it I have no idea.Quick (simplified) explanation about internet traffic in your case Dilbert:

  • You ask your browser to bring up a web page - this is an internet request on port 80
  • Your computer talks to the router, and requests the web page
  • You router makes a "mental note" of which PC on the LAN asked for the web page.  It then asks on the internet for the web page.
  • The web server responds, on port 80, to your router.
  • Your router forwards the response to your PC, since it knows your PC requested the response.

Now when you run Shields UP!! scans, it's a little different:

  • Your PC asks the router for a web page, on port 80
  • That web page responds on port 80, but it also starts scanning other ports
  • The unsolicited ports scans are dealt with by the router, and go no further, since no computer on the LAN requested them

Read the Shields UP!! explanation for why port 113 might not be stealthed (or need to be) here.

If you have a decent firewall built into your router, a software firewall on your PC is almost utterly redundant.  In fact, they tend to induce a false sense of security.  If a trojan can find its way onto your computer, it stands to reason that the trojan could be programmed to bypass or disable the firewall.  Software firewalls just aren't that safe.  Who says they are?  The companies that make them.  Yes, you do need to be a little cynical when it comes to matters of security.

Incidentally, I'm afraid you can't take the credit for having such a secure PC, since the Shields UP!! tests were probing your router, not your PC.  Sorry!Oh, well. Even if I didn't do it, it's related to my computer, so... oops. Whatever.

(I will not let this thread be buried just because of that spam monkey)

OK, I've seen that page, and I downloaded ZoneAlarm but I still get a "Closed" response from 113. It says I can "hard stealth" it with my personal firewall. I have Norton Internet Security 2005; how can I do that?Re-read what I said above.    The probe is not getting as far as your PC - it stops at your router.  That's exactly what you want.  It makes no difference what firewall you install on your PC therefore.

Besides, a stealthed port doesn't present a significantly greater advantage over a closed port.  Script kiddies will run their scripts indiscriminately, not caring what response they get (if any).Rob, I'm afraid that I have to completely disagree with your "thesis" regarding software firewalls! In todays climate, a properly instituted and maintained software firewall is not only desirable, it's essential!
As one example, I'm just about to start work on a system that was "fully protected" by a new Netgear DSL router and it's firewall. It's absolutely infested! Not one of the infections that I have spotted so far has the ability to tamper with any software firewall in any way.

As far as GRCs tests are concerned, they are, like most of Mr Gibsons claims, somewhat laughable. If you want to run a port scanner against yourself, try NMAP via [highlight]NetMonitor[/highlight].Dilbert, your router may have inbuilt support for certain Dynamic DNS applications, check it out. If not, search for your router on [highlight]PortForward[/highlight] where you will undoubtedly find a ready made "recipe" for just about any application you need to run. Again, the use of static internal IPs is to be recommended.

In NPF, to make a rule, you need to go via:
Personal Firewall>Configure>Advanced>General>Add or similar.lmfao Shields Up!
I've just tested a port which I'm running a server on and a client is actually connected to it. According to GRC, it's fully stealthed!

The same test with NMap sends my firewall into a fit of frenzy. Quote
Rob, I'm afraid that I have to completely disagree with your "thesis" regarding software firewalls! In todays climate, a properly instituted and maintained software firewall is not only desirable, it's essential!
That's fine - I know I'm going against the flow here.  But as far as I can see it, the only advantage a software firewall has over a hardware firewall is application blocking.  And that is EXACTLY the kind of blocking that a particularly clever trojan would circumvent.  Therefore I think that software firewalls give people a false sense of security - that's the problem.  Use them by all means, but they are no substitute for a properly configured hardware firewall.  Lugo & Parker put it better than I can.I am aware of L&P and most of it will go completely over the head of the average user. Their main slant is the difference between software and hardware firewalls whilst my slant is the need for the extra layer that a software firewall provides.
They also presuppose that malicious software will somehow interact with a software firewall in order to lessen it's efficiency to a greater or lesser degree. In the main, that presupposition is false. To take their first example, how many LSP hijacker trojans are out there? In the grand scheme of things, they are very thin on the ground!
Yes, a hardware firewall is a better method of fending off incoming attacks (Again, if it's properly instituted and maintained) but it is utterly useless where outgoing traffic is concerned and in todays climate, it's just not good enough.

In their examples, not one popular hardware firewall would fare any better than a software firewall. In fact, the prognosis where a general purpose hardware firewall is concerned is very much worse than that where an average software firewall is concerned. Let's not forget that "application blocking" doesn't simply refer to a simple yes/no to a certain program in a well maintained setup!

Just a few questions to consider:
How would a hardware firewall prevent a trojan inside say, a zip archive being delivered? Now let's say that trojan is installed. How would that same hardware firewall prevent that trojan from connecting to say a web server or an FTP server?You have a point, of course.  I prefer to rely on an up to date virus checker and common sense, but we can't assume that the average user has either.  But then neither can we assume that the average user has a correctly configured firewall (software OR hardware).

I think internet security will have to become a mandatory subject in schools eventually...  Either that or make it illegal to surf without first implementing internet security...

Solve : Disconnect from Web?

Answer»

This might SEEM like a stupid question but is there a way
I can disconnect from the internet at will? The reason being
i've ALWAYS had dial-up, and we are getting Dsl in our area
next week and I've signed up thru TALK America DSL. In
Dial-up if you wanted to be off the WEB you just logged off,
would this be the same for dsl? :-/

I hope I'am in the right forum and Thanks ahead
for any advice

DonDepends on your type of DSL connection.  If you have a USB DSL modem that plugs into your PC. the chances are that you'll have on/off software control.  But the point of DSL is that it's "always on".  The important thing is that you ensure you are running adequate security software and a correctly-configured firewall.  Then it doesn't matter if the connection is live 24/7.

Of course if you're determined to take the connection down, you can always UNPLUG the DSL router/modem/whatever you have.

I did something similar a long time ago, and just can't remember how!!!!!
I KNOW I need to create a separate document for each link, but can't remember the file extension to save, or how to create the link to display it where I want.
Any help appreciated please.

Thanks in advance

PaulThat sounds like javascript, but I'm not to good with that YET so I recommend using a frame-set if you choose to go in that DIRECTION tell me and I'll help you further.

Solve : insert jad and jar files in xhtml?

Answer»

Hi,
     i have deesigned a small mobile phone compatible game with J2ME and i want to insert the .jad and  .jar files into an XHTML web page ,so that any one can download the game in their phone and play it. But i donot know how to insert the files as downloadables. Can anyone help me with thisI don't know specifically how this is done (downloading programs to mobile phones) but why not find another site that does this, and examine their code?Thanks Rob . I figured it out . Just have to give the link to the files directly. And when you try tht link it prompts whether to open or save the file.
      Now i am struck up with accessing a data base (.DB file) to read the table and display it in my XHTML web page . i tried GOOGLING but could not find anything .
Precisely , i want to include the High score for the game  which i wrote it into a .DB file and now i have to access the file and display the table in the web page.
 Could you please give me some ideda how to work this out. If any one could put down the sample script on how to do this would be appreciatedYou would NORMALLY need a scripting language (such as PHP, PERL or PYTHON) to access a database from a web page.  Are you FAMILIAR with any of those?  What did you use, to create the database?Hi Rob ,
       thanx for ur concern . i used J2ME  tool kit which created a record in DB and wrote the SCORES everytime i ran the game , but i could not open the data base at all . When i googled i found it could be opened with MSAcess , but it didnt . I honestly do not know how J2ME writes the database. I stopped processing tht currently writing midlets to output the score in a text file .

thanks againDoes your website host provide you with any server-side scripting?  That would give you some fairly sophisticated capabilities, even with a flat text file.

If you can program in Java, picking up PHP would be a breeze.

MarkI don't see anything like that. Below is a link to what I see:

where9ck.png (421 KB)Hi,

Yes I have been trying to get the pics to have spaces between them
but have only gotten them side by side. You viewed it while I was
attempting to solve the problem.  Problem still occurs.On cellpadding, put a value of 5 and see if you like the result, or play with the value on cellspacing.  The bigger the number the bigger the spacing.  Or put " " without the quotes for each space you WANT separating them.  Not pretty, though.
ASlaterYuck, that's very messy code - lots of redundant HTML tags.

Your problem arises from using the "align='left'" attribute with your img tags.  This has the side-effect of floating the image, causing everything afterwards to wrap down the right hand side of the image.  This works, and is also much tidier:

Code: [Select]<table BORDER="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="95%">

Thanks
Yakov

P.S. I use Dreamweaver.Here's another headache for you, using IE and my resolution SET on 1024x768 the page is too wide for my screen.Ahh I SEE,

Is your IE View-->Text Size--> set to Largest?

I'm going to try to tailor it now...

YakovAgain this is a reason why I still use tables for layout.  You get much more consistent cross-browser results.  Sorry.

Have you tried tweaking the CSS margin and padding for default img and p tags?  Could be that Opera has different defaults.

Solve : changing from page with keys?

Answer»

Hi there. Does SOMEBODY knows, how I go to another SITE, by pressing an arrow of the keyboard. I would like to have that if I press the arrow that points to the left -on your keyboard!- (I can't say it correct in English, so forgive me) that it goes to another page (example: page.html). Actually it is a sort of unvisible link, but you can use it, if you press that key. Does anybody knows how to do this?

greetz

blackberry  Usually Alt+Left goes back through your BROWSER history and Alt+Right goes forward.  Left scrolls left in a wide page, and right scrolls right.  I do not think you can easily override these settings in your browser, unless you use something like AutoHotKey which is free and enables you to reprogram your entire keyboard in a very sophisticated way. I actually didn't meant that, because for that you should visited all the other pages first, (even in right orther). I woulded like to have a way, that you can use these keys, if it is the first time you visit the siteIt would not generally be desireable for a web page to have the ability to reprogram the way a user's keyboard works.  There is one possibility though: you could use javascript to poll for keypress events, and respond accordingly.  That's beyond what I normally do with javascript though, so unless someone else here can help you, you may be better off heading over to a dedicated javascript programmers' forum.This one covers most angles, and avoids explicit messings about with character codes.

- Always use quotes, even with numbers, and always use upper-case letters.

Code: [Select]document.onkeypress = FUNCTION(e)
{
    switch( String.fromCharCode( (e||event).keyCode  ).toUpperCase() )
    {
        case "A":
            alert("A") // or whatever..
            break;

        case "5":
            alert("5")
            break;
    }
}First off all, a thanx for this script. Second, do you know how I let the browser go to another page (and not showing a message like a) if i press the RIGHT ARROW?

thanx

Blackberry  Instead of alert("a"); try window.location="http://www.whatever.com/";

Don't know how to trap right and left cursors keys though.  Jude?For some reason, the arrow keys don't fire the onkeypress event. They do fire the onkeydown event though - so that's the first change.

I have USED the easy approach above (turning the keycode into a character) because it's easier to see what's going on, and to add new cases. I thought this would have to change with the arrows, but it seems that the keycodes they produce do actually correspond to characters. I have put these characters into a map so it's easier to deal with. Then everything else is the same as before.

Code: [Select]document.onkeydown= function(e)
{
    var arrowChars = {up:"&",right:"'",down:"(",left:"%"};

    switch( String.fromCharCode( (e||event).keyCode  ).toUpperCase() )
    {
      case arrowChars.right:
        alert("right");
        // location.href = "blah.htm";
        break;

      case arrowChars.left:
        alert("left");
        // location.href = "doodah.htm";
        break;
    }

Solve : html: resizing background image proportionally?

Answer»

Hi,
I'm not even sure if this is possible in html, but i'll ask anyway..

I have an image I'd like to use as my background image on my web page. Can I set it up so that the image resizes according to viewers' monitor resolutions and that its proportions stay the same?

F.ex. I have an image 1600*1200 and I want it to FILL as big area on the page as possible so that it is FULLY visible. Three persons with different monitor sizes (1024*768, 1280*768 and 800*600) view the page and each one of them can see the whole image WITHOUT scrolling.

Can this be done? So there can be seen f.ex. white color on the SIDES of the image, if its proportions aren't the same as the screen size.

Any help/comment (=not possible! etc) appreciated!
Regards,
--patriktry using size=100%.  usually will work to keep image completely on screen, independent of user's monitor res.
the guy above you is right. I use that to it works.

Solve : Image alignment help?

Answer»

If anyone can help me it would be great. I am creating a web page in frontpage 2003 and am having some issues with graphic alignment. I have created several images in PHOTOSHOP, sliced them and saved them optimized in Image ready as HTML files, the pictures are INSERTED fine, then I use the position absolutely so I can move them around. I get them placed where I want them, then when I preview in BROWSER the page comes up and the picture is up and to the left of where I placed it sometimes it's just barely off sometimes several hundred pixels. the strange this is that the imae I am using for my header is not affected it stays exactly where I put it. I have one table set up with the dimensions of 800x1000 to keep everthing in the center of the page. I have tried several different things so FAR, such as changing alignment of the layer my images use. It seeems though that nom matter what I do it screws up. any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Quote

I'm not quite sure exactly what you're trying to accomplish, but my first suggestion would be to just save the graphic files as .jpg or .gif, and then just insert them into your HTML files using the tag. I wouldn't worry about slicing them and saving them as HTML files within ImageReady, as you describe.

Solve : publishing a web site?

Answer»

I have designed a web site using publisher 2000 and saved it as a web page.  Now I want to publish it to the net using my free web site from my s.p.  I am so confused though and don't know what to do next.  Also when(if) I ever get it on the net, do I need to submit it to search engines?  Can anyone help me?  I don't like being quite so harsh, but you're better off ditching Publisher and using a tool that's actually made for web design.  Using Publisher is likely to cause all sorts of problems -cross-browser incompatibility being a biggie.

Try NVu (which is free), or DreamWeaver, if you have access to it.  Avoid FrontPage at all costs.

The BEST way (IMO) of getting your web pages onto your free web space is using FTP, if your ISP provides FTP access.  FTP Surfer is ONE of the best free FTP programs for MS Windows that I've used.

If you want people to be able to find your web site, yes you will need to submit it to search engines.  For most search engines, that process is free, no matter what web promotion companies try to tell you.index.php works too. Core FTP is what i use, but if your ISP does not allow, you must use their Upload tools. When doing this, you must make SURE that all the files are in the same place as they are on your computer. Dreamweaver is great, but if your just begining i would give Adobe GoLive a go. Who is your host? Freewebs? Geocities? Bravehost? Quote

If you're really SERIOUS about this, pay for web hosting from a hosting service and have your own domain name such as mysite.com, rather than something such as geocities/mysite.etc.  http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/ has a Starter plan that costs $4/mo.  I use them and I'll recommend them.

Solve : Can you listen to music on my site?

Answer»

I uploaded a half hour of music on my web site adventurefilmproductionscanada.com
I EXPECTED that a visitor would just click on the AFP radio program line and the music would start. But what HAPPENS is the music starts to download. This music file is huge and nobody will spend a couple of hours downloading. What can I do to just make the music start when a visitor clicks on it. The code that I used in my index is click here to listen to AFP's radio program[/url]
 I have a Dell Dimension,
OS  Windows 98

Thanks a lotThere are two options:

1. An embedded player (e.g. Window Media Player).
2. A streamed feed (e.g. Shoutcast).

Both have their pros and cons.Thanks for your answer.  What is the code for embedding the media player?  And, if you had the choose, would you choose this action or streaming?

Once again thanksYou can't upload 30 minutes of music to a website unless you stream it.

Do you have any idea how
MUCH bandwith you'd waste on 30 minutes of music? A shitload. Either look into streaming music or play MIDI files... I suggest you do neither, though. Music on websites is annoying.Thanks Raptor,

One of the things our company does is provide clasical music shows.  I uploaded the half hour program using dial up. It took 20 hours.  Are you saying that I should have uploaded it by streaming it?  I just want the OPTION for visitors to either click on the show to listen to it or ignore it.  I don't want it to download. I don't want it to start automatically.  Is there a code I can use to allow visitors to listen immediatly when they click on it.

Thanks muchStreaming just MEANS that people do not have to download everything at once, but rather in small segments so they can listen to it on the website. Howeve,r it requires expertise that I do not have so I can't tell you.

IF you're going to be uploading a lot of files, get broadband. 20 hours of dial-up ticks.....   Ask your web host whether they offer streaming services.  If you're very lucky, they won't charge you extra.

Solve : Help inserting .ppt file?

Answer»

i am making a webpage for a schoool i used to attend i cannot seem to put in a file called s1.ppt  it is a POWERPOINT presentation, i have tried using dreamweaver and notepad but they cannot help, i tried using embed src but they dont work, is there a bttr way of doing this? :-? :-? :-?Open the Powerpoint presentation, and click on File -> Save for WEB  ... It will create a series of files, all of which you need to upload to your server. Once they are all UPLOADED, all you must do is type in the file URL. That should work. Let me know what happens

FlameJust thought I'd put in my 2 cents:

I have Office 2003 and I only have the option to "save as web page" and it saves as a .mht. One file. It has very POOR browser support.thnx asking on this was much easier than emailing the website, like their instructions told me too. I sent them an email last week and they STILL havent respondedwell i just tried and it saves as a single file webpage, i tried inserting it but it just showed up as a like a blank page, with a scroll bar, this is reely staring to get on my nerves, is their a easy way using dreamweaver? i have dreamweaver MX, i dont know if this affects it. The powerpoint thing saved a an .mht file, yet still refuses to want to be in my page!!!!!!!Take a look at my last post. ya, but is there anyway i can put this file in? what about object tags, would they maybe help me here??/me has looked across the reaches of Google to find answers. He has found none.

I can't find anything on it. I hope someone knows, because it's one of those things that seem like they should be possible. I'll keep trying at it.Do not use PowerPoint for web design!

Your best way out of this mess is to offer the presentation as a download link to your users.  If you want your website to look like your presentation, then start with a real HTML editor (Notepad will do!) and re-do it.If I might MAKE a suggestion... HTML-Kit and Notepad++ are what I use.

 Now, I went and looked for some "free" clip arts and animations.  ACCORDING to the isntructions on the page, I right clicked, and then chose, save as, and saved them in my PICTURES.  When I view them there, the animations
move, but when I put them into the Word DOCUMENT, webpage view, they dont' move.  Will theymove when I send the word page in to be put on the net?  or what?
Also, any ideas where I can find smaller clips or little AVATARS or things? I need something that is not too childish or "peppy." Even the ed sites have large images, or have images which are good for elementary teaching but not for college teaching thanks

Solve : Links to downloadable files?

Answer»

I'm using 1st Page 2000 to create a simple web page.
How do I create a link to a pdf file which will offer a download to the user. So far I've got LINKS which AUTOMATICALLY opens the Acrobat Reader.Because a browser on a computer with ADOBE Acrobat Reader knows how to open and view a PDF file it will always attempt to display or open the PDF file when the link is clicked.

If you wanted to make it a downloadable file I would SUGGEST you change the extension of the file by compressing the PDF file as a .ZIP file so the user could download and extract the file.

Or a better solution would be to add a comment such as "Right-click the link and choose save as to save the .PDF file." All browsers support the feature to right-click a link and save the link or file to your computer.Thanks. I like the second suggestion and will use it.

I am FRUSTRATED by a co-workers joke.  We have FINALLY gotten a decent computer at my job.  It has the capability of high band connection thru firefox.  It was wonderful not to have to use the slow dial up on my laptop.  I was so excited that I would be able to just email my work files to the new computer instead of having to copy them to floppy from the old computer, then transfer them to cd on my laptop, then copy them to the new computer.  My co-worker seems to find great delight in only allowing himself internet access!  He has hidden the internet connection.  I can't find it anywhere.  If anyone has any ideas how I can circumvent his little joke, I would LOVE to hear about them!  The computer is networked to an off site system.  Any ideas, anyone?
