Solve : making resgistration page??

Answer»

I KINDA NEED help with 3 things
1-how to make a registration page
2-making the login corrispond with my website
3-making it so that registered members may view all pages on the navigation, but restricting pages on navigation to none registered users.

this is kind of big, but honestly i tried looking around for this kind of help and i didn't find any.
i use Dreamweaver and microsoft front page. preferably microsoft front page, but i'll use whichever is best for my question.If this were me, I would set aside the first page that users encounter as the login/registration page. Two forms, one for registered users and one to allow new users to register. Underlying the page would be a script and a database to store any login data (it's called persistent data). Should a registered user login, you would check the database against the user's credentials and if OK allow access to the site. Should a new user register, you add the credentials to the database and allow access your site.

Your script would have to defend against users using invalid credentials and duplicate id's without the proper PASSWORD.

The data you store in your database might consist of a user's email address for their id (globally unique) and password or their IP address for their id (easily extracted from the http header) and a password.

Whether you use Frontpage or Dreamweaver is irrelevant, it's the underlying logic of the web page.

Hope this GIVES you some ideas. Try making them email you the stuff and just make a pssword for your website which you will reply to them...

Solve : Dialup connection?

Answer»

My boss at work uses internet though dialup ,he has 2 PHONE lines, if he PLUGS his lappy in one of his phone lines it connects but if he puts it in the other phone line it sounds like a nomal call ringing and keep re-dialing, anyone help me out on this plz ??
Cheers. I'm not sure that I understand your question... If he connects it to the other?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Sorry i have edit it nowOn these phone lines... Do ytou have to dial 9 to REACH the outside line? Is that only for one phone line, but the other does not NEED to dial 9? Try playing with the dial-out settings.

[glb]Flame[/glb]Yea the one he can't connect on u need to press 9 to get the outside line , so if i put 9 at the start of the number it should work Yes. If you can set the computer to dial 9 to get out (or sometimes it's 8 ), then it should work... You SHOULD have that FIXED by the way... You should not have once line have to dial out with 9, and one that does not... Change one of them... Call the phone company...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Cheers mate, he has about 6 phone line because some machines need a connection, company computer, company phone line, personal line etc..I see... Well, come on back if you have any more questions!

Solve : Gifs etc.??

Answer»

I have a floating text in my WEB page which I am working on in 'Front Page'.. and when I click on it,.. it disapears as I know that most do,.. but then all gifs cease to work to. ie. animated lines etc. !!
Can I rectify this so that the line gifs STILL work, and still keep my floating text.?

                    Thank you... Tally   By "floating text", do you mean a MARQUEE?  The use of MARQUEE text is deprecated and not guaranteed to be supported in all browsers.  It could be that your browser doesn't cope well with it for example.No..not a marquee... the floating text floats around the page and bounces off the sides.. just how i wanted it.. problem is..when/if.. someone clicks on the text..it dissapears..thats ok..but...it stops my animated lines from working..
                                                               Tally  :-?So presumably this is a javascript animation then.  It may be that the javascript is buggy.  Post the code (or provide a link to the page in question) and maybe we can get it debugged for you.This is the code I used.only I didn't use butterflies..!..see att. wont allow me to send code in this FIELD,,??

Solve : Powerpoint slideshow on a webpage?

Answer»

Hi all

I have a powerpoint slideshow giving instuctions on how to apply a PRODUCT...but I can't get it to run off our web page...has any one any ideas on how I could get this to work

Many thanks

KarenFile-->Save as web page.I have tried that...the video clips won't play and the narration won't play...ideally I would have liked to just be able to click on an icon and have the slideshow open up and play...but couldn't get this to work either.

thank you for your thoughts though

KarenAh.  Powerpoint isn't really for that.  Synchronising animation and audio on a website is a bit harder.  If you want to achieve that, you don't start with Powerpoint, basically.  You'd start with Flash.  Sorry.  The best thing to do is invite your website visitors to download the presentation (remember to OFFER them the free Powerpoint viewer PROGRAM).If you are able to make this into a Flash project, I have the import code you will need

Flamemany thanks for all your help.  I don't have flash capability at present but I will look into getting it.  Again thank you

KarenU can also make a link to the PowerPoint show using HTML. When the link is clicked, the show should begin.

*NOTE* to do this you must upload the file to your webhosting server  The show would only begin on a computer that has PowerPoint (or the PowerPoint viewer) installed.this seems to be a problem a lot of people have, i am wondering why EXACTLY there is not an easy way to insert a ppt file, you think that powerpoint would be widely used as it is a cool little movie making programWell the thing is that PowerPoint was not designed for interactive web animation.  Macromedia Flash was and produces useful compressed files for purpose, unlike the bloated results you'd get with PowerPoint.  Use the right tool for the job.   Quote

Except that you have to master the darn thing, and it takes a LOT of time and dedication to master Flash.  Power point was made for biz presentations, it's SIMPLE and easy.  Making a quicktime movie or a movie with windows moviemaker might help - not perfect but the resulting wmv file plays in most computers.  And it's easier to learn than Flash.

Solve : FontCache3D Directories - Required??

Answer»

Hi,
I have CREATED a site but my Images DIRECTORY has a sub-directory called Fontcache3D with over 100 files at 1.64 meg - files such as:
1018-243000480013500100Verdana.Dat
1018-243000480013500100Verdana.Hdr

Are these REQUIRED when I publish the site to as IIS server? I don't use that many fonts on the site - however I guess these are used in the images that appear on the site (some of which are animated gif files).

Can I safely DELETE these or must I publish these as WELL

ThanksPerhaps I should point out that I have initially created the site on my own IIS server before xferring it to a web host - that may make a difference?

Solve : Outlook spacebar problem?

Answer»

Hello
I've got a problem with outlook's shortcuts.

I am trying to SEND out a html form to people inbox's so they can just easily reply by typing in their name and details, and then just hit the submit button all within the Outlook window and that goes to my server.
The problem is that if you hit the spacebar anywhere, Outlook just jumps to the next email message.

We've tried to work around this by SPLITTING up First Name and Last Name to try avoid hitting the spacebar but it is really annoying.

I'm using Outlook 2003 but I think it happens with any version.
(And I can't get every user that receives the email to customise their keyboard shortcuts because that defeats the point of it.  We're trying to make this simple for people.)daryl,

this is a curious problem.  Hope you've got it solved, but if not, here are some ideas:

- Outlook may not like the file type you are sending.  You say it's an html form?  If the type is forbidden or restricted in your Outlook SETTINGS, then when you try to read it (in Outlook) it may just ignore and continue to the next message.  Administrative priviledges are USUALLY required to change these settings across some networks.  Some forbidden files cannot be CHANGED without modifying your registry.  This is an intentional security feature.

- a number of related fixes are included in the latest Office updates.  Check to see that you have them installed.  Here is an example of a related fix:  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;829982#XSLTH4166121122120121120120

- if it were my project, I would just post the form on my company web page and collect the data.  You could add a link to the form in your email message.

DellI think I might have to make a link to a website.
Its just kinda cool to be able to capture all their information within an email.

Thanks for replying though.

Solve : multiple products??

Answer»

hey i have a huge problem. i hope somone knows how to do this. i am creatig a web site for my parents and they offer like 600 indivdual products and i dont WANT to create 600 page for those. is there an easier way? some way that i just create a template that automatically loads the proper pics and text for a certain product when clicked?  please help me!!!I'm guessing you need multiple pages for the software description etc... I don't think there's any way around it... Unless you provide driect links to the software and not display any description... If you use a template, I think you will need some coding for the images... It might save some time... Might I suggest a webmaster forum? http://www.webmaster-talk.com/

[glb]Flame[/glb]600 pages would be very time consuming from both a development and maintenence point of view. Why not put all your data in a database? You could design just one page for product display and fill in the page with specifc product information when the page is requested.

You can GET a free version of Microsoft SQL Server (not a trial) at:

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/downloads/download.asp

Good luck. i thought that i could do that but does it also load pictures?

where can i get turtorias for it?

thanks for all your helpPictures/images are stored in fields called BLOBs.
MSDE install instructions can be found at: http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread19392.html

Another free database is MYSQL available at: http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/4.1.html Scroll down the page for the Windows version.

Setting up a database driven web site can be complex and time consuming, but instead of writing an HTML file for every page of your site, you only need to WRITE a page for each kind of information you want to present and let the database drive the site.

Tutorials and information on databases can be found on the net, but the above pages have links which MAY help you get started. There are also many site builder programs...some are even free Check out: http://webhosting.yahoo.com/ps/sb/index.php

Good luck.

[glb]Flame[/glb]I have scanned for spyware adware and viruses and yes we pretty much have the same computer only i have more memory than him. Will i need to buy a faster modem? Or can i do it another way?
Are your modems thew exact same? Also, I WANT you to try this, and SEE if it HELPS... Shut down your computer, an dunplug the power to the modem. Leave the modem powerless for about 30 seconds... Once TIME has passed, reconnect the power to the modem, and let it just sit for a minute to configure itself. Now, turn back on the computer, and see if you notice any changes in your connection...

Solve : Neat javascript bits?

Answer»

This is an example of a javascript bit that can be used inline in an anchor tag to eliminate the
annoying dotted square around a link.
This bit of code can be used without the need for an actual javascript code in a "script" tag:
Code: [Select]onfocus="if(this.blur)this.blur()"
What I would like to know is if there is more of such bits of javascript code that can be used inline in an html tag, and where I could find them?

Hello... ?

Anybody home?

Hello... hello...?What I would like to know is if there is more of such bits of javascript code that can be used inline in an html tag

You can put any Javascript code inside an HTML event handler.

and where I could find them?

All over the place. I mean, everywhere http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=Javascript+example.

The code you posted isn't adviseable from an accessibility point of view. It means that people who need to navigate your links using tabs will constantly be "blurred off".

What dotted square?  If you want to manage the visual look of HTML elements, use CSS, not javascript fudges.What dotted square?

Rob, you have surely noticed the highlighting that appears around links when activated.

use CSS, not javascript fudges

I don't know of any CSS property that will reliably prevent this from happening (assuming we want to stop it).
I'd certainly like to know if there is any CSS non-fudge that applies here.

Okay - sorry I get what you (and the first poster) are talking about.  You know that is one of those features that I've been looking at for so long, I don't even "see" it anymore!  This is such a fundamental part of the way web INTERFACES work that I think breaking it might be a bad idea.  When CREATING any web interface, I think we should generally try to AVOID doing things that make the site counter-intuitive.  Unexpected behaviour can confuse users.  And the accessibility point you raise is a good one.You know that is one of those features that I've been looking at for so long, I don't even "see" it anymore!

Ha ! I think it's likely that we both should get out a little more.

I had a look around, because I felt there was a non-script solution, and to see if in fact there was some applicable CSS.

http://codylindley.com/Javascript/223/hiding-the-browsers-focus-borders-should-i-shouldnt-i

...useful.

Further down the page, the estimable Stu Nichols suggests he can do better:

http://codylindley.com/Javascript/223/hiding-the-browsers-focus-borders-should-i-shouldnt-i#c000559

Where there is a CSS property (standards or not) that can be used, I personally think it's OK, as long as it's part of some scheme of visual clues. The "proper" browsers support the :focus pseudo, which can add all the styling one likes.

In this case, removing the link boundary (and replacing with other styling) is a little like changing text link STYLE away from underlined, blue. That is to say, it's not an accessibility issue, but one could question the wisdom of breaking convention.

Stu Nicholls' stuff blows me away.

The trouble with using CSS to achieve this effect is that it's much harder for the beginning web designer to understand the code (ESPECIALLY if it relies on IE hacks).  That said, I guess if someone is thinking of messing around with the visual model to this anally-retentive extent  , they either ought to learn CSS, or should switch to Flash.

There's another reason for not using the javascript at the start: on a link-laden page it's going to create code that is a pain to maintain and which slows down older spec machines.  In short, a neat trick but I reckon there are better (albeit more complicated) ways of achieve a similar effect.

Solve : need 2 HTMLs help?

I'm making my webpage in Frontpage.  I have my navigational bar on top of the page, and I would like it to scroll down when a visiter is scrolling down the page.  How can I do this?

Also, what's the HTML code for when someone right-clicks, say, on a picture and a message BOX appears to prevent them from copying it?

Thanks in advance for the help.

CapTroubleBoth are achieved with javascript.  Google for free javascripts "disable right click" and "scrolling menu" or something like that.  You will find them eventually.Thanks so much. I didn't realize they were a part of javascript.Stuff that makes things move and which changes the way a browser BEHAVES can't generally be ACHIEVE with plain HTML, and REQUIRES programming - i.e. javascript.

Solve : microsoft frontpage?

Hello,

I am trying to put vertical buttons on shared borders

When I try to put the buttons in a position that I WANT to use it changes and moves back to top of page? Can any one help me out , how do I place buttons in a position that I want on each page of website?

ThanksCreat text box with no text
- insert button in to it
And you can MOVE it around anywhare without being disturb

Check the box PROPERTISE for no fill and no lineOk heres my question for the members that use Deamweaver 8
How do i creat a simple box or a circle?
I ask this because when i go to common TAB and go to click the square to draw a square ( surpposically )
it should let me click and hold on the screen and let draw the square but is not letting me do it.
Er...  Dreamweaver is not a graphics package (it's a LAYOUT package) - why are you trying to use it to draw circles or squares?I saw it there but i cant use it
Do you know how to do it?I don't user Dreamweaver these days - I code all of my web pages in plain text.  Yes I am THAT geeky.  So I can't talk about whatever buttons you have seen in Dreamweaver.  But you can create a square somewhere on the page just by USING some CSS, eg:

To achieve a similar effect with a circle, you'd either need to use an image file, or javascript (inefficient).

Solve : Links with Sound?

Answer»

I was wondering if there was a way that when you click on a link ( LINK MADE BY HTML) if you can have it make some sort of sound.Do you mean link to a sound file or play one just for the click and redirect to another HTML page?

I have never come across a technique for the later that does not INVOLVE something like flash.Well, there is a way, but it involves JavaScript:

http://www.webreference.com/js/column20/bgsound.html

This SHOWS how to change it at intervals. To do it on mouse click is easy as onclick= and the class name. I'll explain if you want.Yeah, please explain  :-?nvm, I foundout how to do it... THANKS anywaysOh, OK. That works too. And you're welcome. If you need any further assistance, don't HESITATE to POST again.

Solve : download files?

Answer»

This is probably obvious but I can't find it anywhere:
Using Notepad to write WEB pages, what tag do you put down to LET a file be downloaded from your SITE?
PERSONALLY, what I do, is upload the file into a compressed (.zip) folder, and upload it... Then insert a link from the test to the .zip file. It will download that WAY... I'm I'm right, the link tags are not different than http://  (that)...

Solve : Embedding Video Question?

Answer»

I am embedding a few video clips on my website, the problem I have is that the files are really big and it takes quite a while for them to fully load. Is it possible for a video clip to already start playing while the rest of it is still LOADING? That way the viewers wouldn't have to WAIT that long. I have seen this before on other websites, for example some MUSIC videos. Please help, thanks!I hope all of your visitors to your SITE are using broadband! If your hit rate drops, this could be why.

You are talking about buffering the stream, perhaps?I am using Quicktime movies and I simply embed them. Just found out that I am supposed to have a streaming server in order for it to work faster? How do I get that? I am using Windows XP and my webhost is IPOWER.Contact your webhost to see what they REQUIRE. (Maybe more $$$?)

Solve : Databases and Text Files?

Answer»

I have an asp web page that allows a user to request information from an Access Database, the results of this request are then displayed on a second asp web page and finally the user can then select to view the individual results of the request on a third asp page.

For instance, a user can select all the registered names beginning with the letter 'A', the result of this request will be shown on page2.asp, the user can then select one of the names and the results of that request will be shown on page3.asp.

What I WANT to happen now is that on page3.asp I need to display some text, the amount of text is too long to put it directly in the Access Database, it needs to be in a separate FILE like a txt file or something. I need to know how to SET up the field on the Access Database to call the text file and the asp code I need to USE on page3.asp.

Solve : Limited or no Connectivity..??

Answer»

Hi - So I have a wirless connection that won't connect.  It USED to work just fine, then another laptop came into my house and is connected, and now mine won't SEEM to work at all.  A message always pops up that says I have "Limited or no connectivity".
      There are 4 other laptops connected to the same wireless connection that work just fine.
      When I click on "repair this connection" it says it can't renue my IP address...?
     I WOULD very much appreciate any advice.  If you have any suggestions let me know, thank you so much!
-KimmFirst suspect is the firewall you have installed (you do, right?). Is it limiting the IP ADDRESSES that can PASS thru? This can be the hardware firewall (router) or any software firewalls you may have installed.

Check the parameters of your home network.

Hope this helps. Unplug the power cord going to your router and or modem, and also turn off your computer. Leave them off for at least 15 seconds... Then, restore power ONLY to the modem and or router... Leave it alone for about 30-45 seconds, and then turn on your computer. This usually helps...

Solve : Resizing Fireworks images?

Answer»

Hi.
I've just created an image in Fireworks for my Index page and want to know if it's possible to make the image resize to FILL the screen no-matter whatever the monitor resolution on the VIEWING computer is.
The image is 1024 pixels wide but I would like it to be viewed full frame on a monitor using 800 pixels resolution. Is this possible? If not what is the FAVOURITE monitor resolution to aim for.

Regards
Nostromo

1024x786 and 1280x1024 are the most used so far from what I've seen.

There's no way to make an image fill the screen unless the user can tell the PROGRAM to 'stretch to FIT' the image. Like you can when you select a Windows desktop background.Flash is much better for this kind of thing.  You could use javascript to resize according to the size of the browser window, but that's a bit hit and miss and will only work for some browsers.

Can you show us your image?  We may have some more suggestions.

Solve : I Need Help/Criticism on my site. HTML issues ??

Answer»

I need help making my site look uniform in Firefox, Netscape, IE. . The link is http://www.flacomputersecurity.com .   Also I would like to know what the CHARACTOR encoding should be on the first line. Im not sure if it is HTML 4.0 or 4.1 . Finally, Is there any good programs that can help identify errors in your html and possibly fix them?

Thanks for anybodys response

RcappEither HTML 4.0 or 4.1 is fine.  First hot tip: if you want to make a professional-looking website, start by looking at some professional websites.  Try to emulate their design features.  Generally, using images instead of text is to be avoided - it makes your website load more slowly, and prevents it from being used by visually impaired users.  Second hot tip: learn CSS.  Google for a tutorial.

The best way of identifying errors in HTML is to use the >W3C HTML Validation Service<.I'm not heavily into web design, but this website has proven to be very useful because it incorporates the latest standards. Well, at least it did when I last looked;

http://www.w3schools.com/

By the way, I'm not a capitalist and certainly not an entrepreneur, but you really shouldn't list what you're doing to do with the computer (Under the "rates" section) because people'll just think they can do it themselves and you'll be out of a job. Or they'll screw up and you'll get even more work. I suppose it works both ways.Until you actually get your forum up, you MIGHT either remove the link to it or PUT a comment on the forum page that the forum is forthcoming, rather than just LEAVE the page blank.

On the HOME page, at bottom, you could use image mapping on the image for Free Security Programs to create hyperlinks to the image.  Then, you might eliminate the table below the image.  That way, you would not have the duplication of the image and the table.

Why is http://www.flacomputersecurity.com/security_tips.html different from the other pages?  Consistency is generally a good principle to follow.

http://www.flacomputersecurity.com/faqs.html is another blank page.

The link to Home, from http://www.flacomputersecurity.com/security_tips.html, does not work.  Neither does the link to SERVICES.

-Remove the google and avg stuff
-Center the contents of the page...it looks cleaner than a left alignment imo.
-Reorder your links as show below.  I say this because usually contact is the last link on a page.
Services
Rates
Links
Contact
-The free antivirus, spyware removal and firewall links should come down...because its taking away from your own services...What would stop people from just downloading those programs and figuring them out for themselves instead of you doing it for them and charging your own labor fee?

Hope that helps

Solve : securing images?

Answer»

I saw at some sites, that is was inpossible to copy IMAGES. How do you protect your images on your site against copying?

I did find following scripts :

Code: [Select]<meta http-equiv="imagetoolbar" content="no">that works for IE6
Code: [Select]<body onselectstart="return false"  ondragstart="return false" oncontextmenu="return false">that works against Drag, right mouse click : save as and select

BUT only the first code : meta.... works for firefox. In firefox, you can still drag, or select : then ctrl+c.
I dont know if it works in Opera or netscape.Have you considered using Flash to display your images?

Nowadays, if someone wants to copy an image from your site, it's actually quite simple.  If they're using "no right click", there are ways around it.

The most secure way, I've seen, is to convert your jpeg, gif, etc., etc., images to Flash format.  This is what you're probably experiencing on the other sites you have visited and were unable to copy images from.

Useful link:

http://www.gfx2swf.com/

Hope that helped...You cannot secure an image and prevent it from being copied.  If it displays in a browser, it can be copied.  Even if it's a Flash animation, the user can do a screen capture.

Better protection is provided by watermarks.indeed, watermarks, but if you have over 80 pic's
same for flash... or is there a way to do it all at 1 time?
Well, you could change an image to a link then give it a behaviour.
You could try and make it so that there is a behaviors that will make it so you cannot select the image, and so that if you right click it, a popup box will appear saying that no image options are allowed/available.
Unfortunately, theat won't protect it from a screen capture. Quote

Unfortunately, theat won't protect it from a screen capture.
Nothing will stop a screen capture.

Just go and copyright your site and its images.Let's say someone does use a screen capture to steal an image...it's only good to them if they intend to use the same size image.  If they try to edit it by making it larger...doesn't the image quality degrade, anyway?

Watermarks take away from the image quality, also.

I guess, when you really get down to it...Rob was right...as long as someone has a browser...your images aren't safe.indeed, but whit some of my first protection scripts, it blocks the "non-pro" user. BUT ... there are lots of people using Firefox (INCLUDING myself ). cuz firefox is a new browser, it doesnt understand all JS and/or HTML-commands. So, in Firefox, only your right mouse doesnt work, but you can still drag, cuz firefox can't read the scirpt for anti-drag. So, is there an other script that works in firefox. :-?

PS: i dont have Opera or Netscape, so i dont know if that scripts work in other browsers then IE. anyway, in firefox, it doesnt work

Quote
cuz firefox is a new browser, it doesnt understand all JS and/or HTML-commands.
Sorry miki, but that's absolute tosh.

For sure, different browsers may handle things slightly differently.  But the big problem here is IE's lack of standards compliance, not a particular shortcoming on the part of Firefox/Opera/Netscape/etc.  A script programmed with IE's (broken) view of javascript in mind may or may not also run in other browsers.  Google "javascript cross-browser compatibility" and you'll find a LOT on this subject.

If you want to get deep into WEB design, then you should learn a programming language like PHP.  With PHP you could generate thumbnails of images, add watermarks, etc, all in real-time, without making any changes to the original image.  Also if you're serious about web design, you could do with downloading all the current browsers and testing your sites on all of them.

Re the comments about image size above: GENERALLY people aren't going to be viewing high-res images in browsers - certainly nothing above screen resolution.  Many photographers display unmarked "thumbnails" of their photographs, but you have to pay to display or DOWNLOAD an unmarked high-res version of the same image.Or just use Photoshop to put a partially transparent watermark dead-center of the photograph. If they want to download and use it then, well, heck, free advertisement for your site!

A sample is below. If this was my website, and someone took a screen capture or something like that, then I wouldn't really care all that much. Like I said: Free advertising!

Solve : Databases and Images?

I have an asp web page that allows a user to request textual INFORMATION from an Access Database, the results of this request are then displayed on a second asp web page.

What I want to HAPPEN now is that a thumbnail IMAGE is ALSO called from the results of the users request, this thumbnail image then needs to have a hyperlink associated with it so that the user can click on it and SEE the full size image.

I don't want to embed these images into the Access Database as there are quite a few.

Any suggestions?

I am trying to place a larger image from a tumbnail on the same page as the thumnail but to the right of where the thumbnail is located when the user clicks on the tumbnail.
Why do this?  What's the point of using thumbnails if you're going to put the full sized image on the same page and to the right of the thumbnail?
Yes, it would take javascript to make the "rightside" table expand when you click on the thumbnail. I can't remember the exact code but this WEBSITE will help. Be careful, I would also put a link to the full size images ONTO the thumbnail - some people browse without javascript on!

Also one thing I noticed, your using local addresses (e.g. on your computer) for the images. Fair enough if your only going to view the page on your own machine but if you want to go online you will need to change those addresses.Do all full size images appear in the same location on the page, regardless of which thumbnail you click on?  Is that the gist of this?  A kind of slide show?Thanks for your responses.

Steelegbr: what is the site you are referring to?  I intend to change links but rite now I am testing on my local machine.

Soybean: yes all images will appear in same location regardless of thumbnail chosen.  This is just a sameple of images; they could be potentially many more.  http://www.w3schools.com/js/default.asp

I should have made the link more obvious. (Try clicking on the WORD "this" in my previous post).I believe this Newegg.com page with images of a product illustrates what you want to do: Canon
 A540 Silver 6.0MP Digital Camera 4X Optical Zoom - Retail
.  That page is opened by clicking on the product image on this page: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16830120041

You might view the source code there and study it to figure out how it works.

Solve : Dreamweaver Rollover Image Code not working?

Answer»

My friend gave me the rollover image code that's included with Macromedia(or is it Adobe now?) Dreamweaver. I've been trying to do a little bit of HTML and just messing around with code to see what I can do before I go to do a real project. This code also let me adjust the images' properties (border, width, height etc.) just like if I were to put in a regular image. I'm currently sourcing the images from my own drive so I can do everything offline.

When I inserted the code, the mouseOut image WORKED fine, but the mouseOn image didn't show up at all.

I don't know how to put scripts into the posts without being restricted, so if anyone has Dreamweaver and knows where to insert URLs into the code or tell me how to post scripts into the forums that would be great.

Or if anyone could direct me to a site with a good script and code that allows me to modify image properties as well as do a rollover that would be appreciated too. Quote

Hi, Sinkhan. I just got your PM, and saw the problem right away.

Your code has an error, and the error is in the URL A HREF link.
Quote
<body onLoad="MM_preloadImages('This is the mouseon image I want to be shown')">
<a href="Random Link" onMouseOut="MM_swapImgRestore()" onMouseOver="MM_swapImage('Image Name','','This is the mouseon image I want to be shown',1)"><img src="This is the mouseout image I want to be shown" alt="This is the rollover" name="Image Name" width="400" height="364" border="0">[/url]

What is should be:
Quote
<body onLoad="MM_preloadImages('This is the mouseon image I want to be shown')">
<a href="Random Link"> [highlight]<[/highlight]onMouseOut="MM_swapImgRestore()" onMouseOver="MM_swapImage('Image Name','','This is the mouseon image I want to be shown',1)"><img src="This is the mouseout image I want to be shown" alt="This is the rollover" name="Image Name" width="400" height="364" border="0">[/url]
You will notice a highlighted element bracket (<) in the code that you should have. I am not 100% sure if that is the right element. Unfortunately, I don't have dreamweaver on this computer (but I will soon) so I can not be 100% sure.

PS: Any text can be placed right before the highlighted bracket.

Thanks, but when I WENT to try it, it still didn't work. When you do get Dreamweaver again, would it be possible to send me the code?

But again, thanks for trying.zylstra555, I'm afraid your correction is incorrect.  The onMouseOver and onMouseOut attributes belong to the tag.  >See here<.  In fact those attributes can be applied to any HTML element.

The code that I see looks fine, except for the image name: "Image Name".  I'm talking off the top of my HEAD here, but I'm pretty sure that spaces aren't valid in element IDs.  So call it "Image_Name" instead.

The code calls the javascript functions, MM_preloadImages(), MM_swapImage() and MM_swapImageRestore(), so those functions must be contained or included elsewhere in your HTML page (typically in the HEAD). Quote

[/url] represents an HTML element.
href='...' represents an attribute of that element.
onMouseOver is also an attribute.  It happens to be an attribute that can be used with any HTML element.  Hence these are all valid:

You get the point.

So in this case, the onMouseOver and onMouseOut attributes need to appear within the
tag to which they relate.

Incidentally, I haven't made any attempt to debug this problem, because I would need sight of the entire page.  If you read my earlier post carefully, you'll understand why.So how do I put scripting in posts?Like this:

<###script>

We know that the "###" will need to be deleted.Well here's the code:
Code:
[Select]<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
<html>
<head>
<title>Untitled Document</title>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<###script language="JavaScript" type="text/JavaScript">
<!--
function MM_swapImgRestore() { //v3.0
  var i,x,a=document.MM_sr; for(i=0;a&&i<a.length&&(x=a[i])&&x.oSrc;i++) x.src=x.oSrc;
}

function MM_preloadImages() { //v3.0
  var d=document; if(d.images){ if(!d.MM_p) d.MM_p=new Array();
    var i,j=d.MM_p.length,a=MM_preloadImages.arguments; for(i=0; i<a.length; i++)
    if (a[i].indexOf("#")!=0){ d.MM_p[j]=new Image; d.MM_p[j++].src=a[i];}}
}

function MM_findObj(n, d) { //v4.01
  var p,i,x;  if(!d) d=document; if((p=n.indexOf("?"))>0&&parent.frames.length) {
    d=parent.frames[n.substring(p+1)].document; n=n.substring(0,p);}
  if(!(x=d[n])&&d.all) x=d.all[n]; for (i=0;!x&&i<d.forms.length;i++) x=d.forms[i][n];
  for(i=0;!x&&d.layers&&i<d.layers.length;i++) x=MM_findObj(n,d.layers[i].document);
  if(!x && d.getElementById) x=d.getElementById(n); return x;
}

function MM_swapImage() { //v3.0
  var i,j=0,x,a=MM_swapImage.arguments; document.MM_sr=new Array; for(i=0;i<(a.length-2);i+=3)
   if ((x=MM_findObj(a[i]))!=null){document.MM_sr[j++]=x; if(!x.oSrc) x.oSrc=x.src; x.src=a[i+2];}
}
//-->
<###/script>
</head>

<body onLoad="MM_preloadImages('This is the mouseon image I want to be shown')">
<a href="http://www.google.ca"> <onMouseOut="MM_swapImgRestore()" onMouseOver="MM_swapImage('Image Name','','This is the mouseon image I want to be shown',1)"><img src="This is the mouseout image I want to be shown" alt="This is the rollover" name="Image Name" width="400" height="364" border="0"></a>
</html>And just quickly, how do I make anchors so I can make like a nav bar at the top of a page and then link it to a LOWER portion of a page? And also how do I do the same thing, but a lower portion of a different page?

Ex: Nav bar contains "Events". I want to be able to click this text and link it 3/4s way down to a section called "Events". Another item in the nav bar will be contact phone number. I want to be able to click that text and go 1/2 down another page of the site.

And just one more thing, how do I make linking images instead of text? (Instead of clicking on just "Events" I want to have a graphical representation of "Events" in different colours and fonts.)

ThanksSee my first reply in this thread for a sugested correction to your code, which I see you have not yet implemented.

The place that you're linking to is specified thus: <a name='events'>Events[/url]and the link you click on is specified thus: <a href='#events'>... Quote

Simple: <a href='#events'><img src='events.gif' border='0'>[/url]DreamWeaver makes rollover code look like this (this is an entire HTML document)

Code: [Select]<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
<html>
<head>
<title>Untitled Document</title>

<###script language="JavaScript" type="text/JavaScript">
<!--
function MM_swapImgRestore() { //v3.0
  var i,x,a=document.MM_sr; for(i=0;a&&i<a.length&&(x=a[i])&&x.oSrc;i++) x.src=x.oSrc;
}

function MM_preloadImages() { //v3.0
  var d=document; if(d.images){ if(!d.MM_p) d.MM_p=new Array();
    var i,j=d.MM_p.length,a=MM_preloadImages.arguments; for(i=0; i<a.length; i++)
    if (a[i].indexOf("#")!=0){ d.MM_p[j]=new Image; d.MM_p[j++].src=a[i];}}
}

function MM_findObj(n, d) { //v4.01
  var p,i,x;  if(!d) d=document; if((p=n.indexOf("?"))>0&&parent.frames.length) {
    d=parent.frames[n.substring(p+1)].document; n=n.substring(0,p);}
  if(!(x=d[n])&&d.all) x=d.all[n]; for (i=0;!x&&i<d.forms.length;i++) x=d.forms[i][n];
  for(i=0;!x&&d.layers&&i<d.layers.length;i++) x=MM_findObj(n,d.layers[i].document);
  if(!x && d.getElementById) x=d.getElementById(n); return x;
}

function MM_swapImage() { //v3.0
  var i,j=0,x,a=MM_swapImage.arguments; document.MM_sr=new Array; for(i=0;i<(a.length-2);i+=3)
   if ((x=MM_findObj(a[i]))!=null){document.MM_sr[j++]=x; if(!x.oSrc) x.oSrc=x.src; x.src=a[i+2];}
}
//-->
</###script>
</head>

<body onLoad="MM_preloadImages('FILE:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/Compaq_Owner/My%20Documents/Jesses%20Workspace/Zylstra%20Family/images/lborder.gif')">
<a href="URL" onMouseOut="MM_swapImgRestore()" onMouseOver="MM_swapImage('ImageName','','file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/Compaq_Owner/My%20Documents/Jesses%20Workspace/Zylstra%20Family/images/lborder.gif',1)"><img src="file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/Compaq_Owner/My%20Documents/Jesses%20Workspace/Zylstra%20Family/images/header.jpg" alt="AltText" name="ImageName" width="572" height="76" border="0"></a>
</body>
</html>
Where header and lboarder are the two images (header is the original)

But I think I am a bit late for this, am I not?

Replace ###Script with just Script, and /###script with script. YaBB blocks the Script element in posting.I think I've finally found out what the problem with the coding.

Code: [Select]<body onLoad="MM_preloadImages('file:///C|\My Documents\HTML\Experimentation\Images\Balloon.jpg')">
<a href="http://www.yahoo.ca" onMouseOut="MM_swapImgRestore()" onMouseOver="MM_swapImage('ImageName','','file:///C|\My Documents\HTML\Experimentation\Images\Balloon.jpg',1)"><img src="file:///C|\My%20Documents\HTML\Experimentation\Images\Balloonpop.jpg" alt="AltText" name="ImageName" width="200" height="400" border="0"></a>
Along with all the scripting in zylstra's post, this is what I used to put in the images. This code still did not work. So I tried something daring and brave:

I changed all the backslashes for the mouseOn image (at least I THINK "\" is a backslash) into regular slashes and after that it worked perfectly.

I speculated that the problem might have to do something with making the spaces into "%20" and the colons into pipes, but after trying out many combinations with or without them, the only factor that really had an effect on whether the image worked or not was if the mouseOn image used slashes and not backslashes.

What an incredibly simple solution  [smiley=laugh.gif][smiley=grin.gif]

Thanks to zylstra and Rob  [smiley=thumbsup.gif] [smiley=thumbsup.gif]Good to hear!
You are very welcome.
And thank you for telling us what you did to fix the problem, as its knowledge to help us all

Solve : doctypes?

Answer»

Hi, first time here.
I've had a web site up and RUNNING for a couple of years: www.ryanartduo.com using EXPLORER 6.0 and Front page 2002, constructed with tables.
Recently, I've been told I should have been using "doctypes," a topic totally foreign to me. A doctype was suggested to me, which I inserted at the top of my home page html. when I published the page I noticed it had spread some of the top text and horizontal lines, up and down, but did not ruin it.
Questions: 1- Must I have a doctype on each page, of which there are many, including ENLARGED image pages hyperlinked to cropped thumbnail pages? (my site is a gallery for my wife and me--artists)
2- Can you suggest a service that can view my site and tell me the exact doctypes to use?
3- If not, can one of you help me out?
I'm at a loss.
Martin.
P.S. I'm working offline on a second site. I tried the suggested doctype (off line) and it shifted some text.This page will explain all:

http://htmlhelp.com/tools/validator/doctype.html

Hope this HELPS.  Thanks Sidewinder.  Been there earlier and couldn't decide which was for me.  But I'll try reading it again first chance I get. Thanks for the reply. Martin.Yeah I'm in the same boat, friend recently suggested Doctypes.

I know what a dt is, I know what it does and even where it goes...just no idea what to actualy use as I'm useing FP.

That site while helpful to html USERS doesn't do us FP folk much good.

What HTML does FP use as it's (not sure here) base?

Just found this give it a whirl

Solve : Google Ranking?

Answer»

Hello,

I know this hasn't much to do with web design but its the category that fits the most for my question which is: How do you "help your site show up on google" and by showing up I mean in the top results for a given keyword.
Does website acess help in ranking ?(meaning how many visitor the site gets)
Do RSS Feed help ?
META tags ?

I've googled for that but found many answers that I couldn't believe.

Thanks

Al968its all about the traffic and if you paid to get your site in the google directory. if you pay for them to put it in then it will be higher in the results then a site that was put in wit hthe free submission. so if you want you google rank to GO up then get your site in different directorys and get links to your site on other SITES that have a decent google rank, that way the crawler will find it easierok

But does it mean that the people have to get to my site through google or just get to my site ?

thanks

Al968welcomeGoogle pagerank is based on "votes". A link to your site counts as a vote for you.

Other things that can affect it are the QUALITY of links (don't go putting your website on link sites or top 100 type sites, their just not usually that good) and crawlability e.g. can the GoogleBot access your whole site (I would advise taking advantage of Google Webmaster Tools to be sure).

Hope that clears it up a bit.Yes it does thank you
