Solve : Exporting theme from Drupal 5?

Answer»

Is there a way to export a theme from Drupal 5? I have a website with a theme but I'd like to dump the website as it's a mess and save only the theme for use with Drupal 7.I think you're going to be out of luck.  The theme engine changed pretty radically from 5 to 6, never mind 7.  Is it a theme you created yourself, or did you download it?  If the latter, it may well have been updated by the creator.  If the former, now might be a good time to take stock and redesign anyway.  Visual standards for the web have improved a lot since the Drupal 5 days.  For example, when designing a new web site, I usually start with a CSS framework like 960.gs or Bootstrap, to get layouts up and running much more quickly.

There are several vanilla themes for Drupal that you could use for this purpose, eg. Zen or Blueprint.I believe it is a theme that was created for someone personally. I'm not much of a graphics artists and I don't want to be, too much nagging about the colour of this and that .. Tried it. Hated it.

Can I at least extract certain elements like the logo and colour values so that I might reconstruct the whole deal?

Alternatively, I guess I could upgrade to Drupal 7 from Drupal 5. Is this possible? Or even recommended? It would save a lot of time. Quote from: Raptor on January 23, 2012, 07:39:56 AM

Absolutely.  You can always download any images and CSS files that your browser can see of course.  For colour matching, I highly recommend the ColorZilla addon for Firefox.  It gives you an eyedropper to pick out colours ANYWHERE on a web page.

No, I don't think there's a direct upgrade path.  You'd need to upgrade to 6 first and then to 7.  Expect pain. Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on January 24, 2012, 06:55:07 AM

Or ColorMania which gives you an eyedropper anywhere in any window. Where would I GO about finding the CSS and images used to construct the website? Is it in the theme folder? There seem to be quite a few themes installed.Press CTRL+U to open the HTML source. Then look for anything with and save those files. Or go into the theme's folder and just save those files.Yes, that is the easiest way to grab the files indeed. Thanks.

But how do I go about rebuilding the website in Drupal 7? Do I need to write my own theme or is there a section where I can fill out my own HTML and CSS?I have absolutely no experience in Drupal themes so unfortunately I can't help you there. I'm sure Rob can help though. Quote from: Raptor on January 24, 2012, 03:13:12 PM
Do I need to write my own theme or is there a section where I can fill out my own HTML and CSS?

See my above post where I mention Zen and Blueprint.  This is one of the quickest ways to get up and running.  Even then, there's a lot of reading to do and your CSS skills will be exercised to the max.

The full theming documentation is available here, including the gen on how to start from scratch.  Personally, I wouldn't start from scratch, even with a thorough understanding of theming in D7.  It's so much quicker to start with one of the boilerplate themes and create a subtheme from there.I've tried Zen, actually. Didn't make a lot of sense to me at the time, went back to the default theme.
I don't think I'm anywhere near experienced enough to do what I thought needed to be done. I understand CSS but Drupal is all new to me.

Would you say that sticking with Drupal 5 is a bad idea or is it safe to be used nowadays? Otherwise I'll just recommend starting a new site with a pre-fab theme. Quote from: Raptor on January 26, 2012, 05:00:39 AM
Would you say that sticking with Drupal 5 is a bad idea or is it safe to be used nowadays?

There are a few issues, staying with version 5:

  • You cannot skip version numbers when upgrading.  The longer you remain on version 5, the harder it's going to be, to upgrade, when other pressures (see below) make that desirable.
  • Drupal 5 is end of life.  There will be no more security updates.  For Drupal (as with any significant web application) security updates are quite common - think at least one a month during the life of the product.  It is safe to assume therefore that UNPATCHED exploits exist for Drupal 5.  Any Drupal 5 based website should now be considered insecure.
  • Drupal 8 is just around the corner, meaning that Drupal 6 will be going end of life very soon, never mind Drupal 5.
  • Hosting platforms will also be increasing version numbers for things like PHP and MySQL.  It may be increasingly difficult to find a home for older versions of Drupal, due to compatibility problems (deprecated functions, etc.).

Upgrading Drupal is a pain though, I'm not going to lie to you.  I think this issue has been addressed to some extent in Drupal 7, but of course you're going to have to go through two version upgrades to get there.Yeah, Drupal 7 seems to have the upgrades handled nicely.

Thanks for the information, I shall recommend that they have their website redesigned in Drupal 7. The theme will just have to be rebuilt. Quote from: Raptor on January 30, 2012, 08:02:02 AM
I shall recommend that they have their website redesigned in Drupal 7. The theme will just have to be rebuilt.

I think that's a good decision.  Alternatively I'd advocate looking into a PHP framework.  Most of them have dedicated CMSes.  This means that it's much easier to make significant changes to the CMS (if you are already familiar with the framework).  E.g. Fuel CMS - based on CodeIgniter.  Besides the CODING advantages, you'll also see a significant speed improvement.  On the other hand, you'll have access to fewer community-developed modules.

In any case, if you're doing much web development, sooner or later you'll be glad you learnt a framework.

Solve : CSS confusion, some help please?

Answer»

I am a newb when it comes to this stuff, but I'm trying to learn more about html codes and CSS so that I can have more options with creativity. I am using a tumblr theme that sets all my photos to the same size. I want to be able to save an image at a certain size and have it appear as such on the screen.

I read that HighRes allows the images to be sized however they are saved, but as far as I can tell that is not happening. Can anyone tell me how to modify the SCRIPT to fit my needs? When I save an image in photoshop as 100 px wide, I want it to appear like that on screen, but all my images are coming out the same, predetermined size.

Hi.  When posting code here, it helps to put it in [code] [/code] tags:

Code: [Select]<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">

<head>

<script src="http://static.tumblr.com/i2jrupg/yM2ld2ucr/jquery-1.4.4.js" language="javascript" type="text/javascript"></script>

   <title>{Title}</title>
   <link rel="shortcut icon" href="{Favicon}">
   <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" href="{RSS}">

...

Your biggest clue is here:

Code: [Select]<link rel="stylesheet" href="http://static.tumblr.com/zug3shz/aLGld613h/styles.css" />
There are various img styles set in that CSS.  Might be worth tweaking those (if you're able to edit this CSS directly).  But you'll have to look at the generated HTML from Tumblr to see exactly what DIVS, classes, etc., you need to modify.  In short, without good knowledge of CSS, it's going to be a struggle.  This CSS reference is your friend.

Solve : Troubleshooting at contactforms settings.?

Answer»

Hello,

I downloaded a free template for a website but when I came along the contactform I found an missing file.
The form has no action and I do not know how to make a SCRIPT that sends the form to me.

Maybe someone can help me out?

This is the form:

Code: [Select]<form ID="ContactForm" action="" method="post">
<div>
<div class="wrapper"><span>Name:</span><input type="text" name="naam" class="input"></div>
<div class="wrapper"><span>Email:</span><input type="text" name="email" class="input"></div>
<div class="wrapper"><span>Company:</span><input type="text" name="bedrijf" class="input"></div>
<div class="textarea_box"><span>Message:</span><textarea name="textarea" cols="1" rows="1"></textarea></div>
<a href="#" id="submit" class="button2 COLOR3">Send</a>
<a href="#" id="RESET" class="button2 color3">Clear</a>
</div>
</form>If the form is intended to send email, you need a server-side script to validate the input and then send the email.  I'd also recommend using a CAPTCHA at the very least to ensure that the contact form doesn't get spammed continually (it will).  If PHP is available to you, I'd use that.  Googling "PHP email form" provides lots of results.  Here are some - I make no comment on the quality of coding, but they're a start:

Solve : create a link to IE home page?

Answer»

Hello to each and everyone, I'm a newbie so welcome to me
I would like to know if it's possible in html to create a link to the local computer's IE home page? If so, how?
For example, if a user click on a link, it will redirect and open their local IE's home page.

Thanks to all and more power.
4GIt's not possible I'm afraid. Quote from: kpac on FEBRUARY 09, 2012, 04:17:20 AM

It's not possible I'm afraid.

Or....:

Code: [Select]<script language="text/javascript">
if (document.layers)
  window.home();
else if (document.all)
  window.location="about:home";
else
  alert("Your browser kind of sucks.")
}
</script>
Well that's embarressing. I wasn't sure today when I POSTED it, so I did a quick Google and CAME up with nothing. It doesn't look like there's a cross-browser SOLUTION though. That code doesn't work for Chrome, as far as I can tell.I think with the advent of multi-page "homes" and such like, the whole concept of home has changed in meaning significantly.  If my "home" involved loading 10 tabs, I wouldn't want some sneaky web page to pull that javascript trick on me... Yep, exactly.  That's another reason why I thought it wasn't possible....Why would any user NEED a link to their own IE home page? If they aren't using IE what would be the point? And if they are, since IE has a picture of a little house that the user can click on, wouldn't it be redundant? IE may not be installed (there are non-Microsoft OSs that people use!) or if it is, may not be the default browser. Is this a lazy script kiddie's social-engineering question designed to elicit information from gullible helpers on how to write web pages that hack the user's system in some way?

Exactly. Some more information on the OP's alleged reason for asking might clear that question up. Or it might not.

easy trout, ask questions first before jumping to conclusions.
we have a welcome page for free 30 minutes wifi access. after they agree on the terms, they will get routed to the 2nd page and it contains 3 choices; one going to accounting (if they want to purchase more hours), one going to mobile printing and the last one is exit. exit is currently set to google but we're thinking of redirecting exit to their IE's home page hence the question if possible. so to answer your question, NO, this is not a lazy script kiddie's social-engineering question designed to elicit information from gullible helpers on how to write web pages that hack the user's system in some way. Solve : Sequence mouseover?

Answer»

Hi there.

I'm trying to MAKE a little VALENTINES website 'card' for my ladyfriend. I was GOING to be clever about it and use javascript, but as it turns out I'm really not that clever with it anymore. I need a single image to change into a different image on each FOLLOWING mouseover event. A planned 'route' of images, for exameple A -> B -> C -> D -> E -> A -> F - > B -> .. and so on.

I thought I could do this, but I'm getting nowhere. I did try to look for similar attempts to make this, but it's kind of hard to find since 'mouseover' is such a generic search term.

There's little point for me in posting my code so far.. it's just a long list of imagecodes and a little mouseover script that would probably make you laugh.

Thanks. SOLVED it, thanks anyway.

Solve : center Tag help?

Answer»

I have a LOGO JPG file I would like to have Centered on the Page. So I use this code

It still goes on the left why?http://www.webdesigntuts.net/css-tutorials/how-to-center-a-website-with-css.html

The same applies to centering any HTML element.In other words

CSS:
Code: [Select]div#image {
  text-align: center;
}
div#image img {
  margin: 0 auto;
}

HTML
Code: [Select]<div id="image">
  <img src="logo1.jpg" height="100" alt="" border="0" align="">
</div>
Code: [Select]<div class="box">
<p>Hello world </p>
</div>

Code: [Select]d.box
{margin-left:auto;
margin-right:auto;}
If you want just the picture centured, you'll have to use text-align:center; as indicated above ...

How's this for a newbie thought. . .  Use the align code within your image tag like this. . .

And if it still defies control or NEEDS extra tweaking, maybe try putting it in its own paragraph or TD which is aligned how you like it. Thanks Quote from: leslieed on February 09, 2012, 09:32:06 AM

Solve : inserting photo into html program to post on web?

Answer»

I am just learning HTML. The project I am working on is to post a picture on the web. My OS is Windows 7. I took a photo and SAVED it on my jump drive and re-sized the photo to 354px by 266px. The photo has a tag of kitty 1.
Here is the line:
alt:"emma passport" height:"266" width:"354";/>
Also I want the photo to align right of the HEADING. I have looked at some site regarding HTML and css but can't get it to validate.
Help! Code: [Select]<img SCR="images.kitty 1.emma.jpg" /> alt:"emma passport" height:"266" width:"354";/>
should be

Code: [Select]<img src="images.kitty 1.emma.jpg" alt="emma passport" height="266" width="354" title="kitty 1" />
The "title" attribute I think is what you're looking for when you mention a "tag of kitty 1". I'd recommend visiting here (http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp) to learn HTML. It's the best place on the Internet in my opinion.

Solve : Redirecting users and monitoring stats?

Answer»

So I've got a website and I'd notice that some users are visiting the website through a link that is dead. I'd like all users that hit a page that doesn't exist to be redirected to my index.html.

I also like the My Stats that comes with Wordpress although I'd settle for anything more useful than the stats thingy that comes with DirectAdmin.

Preferably all without Javascript. (PHP is O.K)

Any suggestions?For Wordpress, I'd recommend the StatPress plugin. If you have access to the server, I'd more-so recommend Awstats. Maybe you could contact your host about getting it installed if it's not already. Quote from: kpac on February 27, 2012, 11:23:38 AM

The website isn't made in Wordpress, though. I just liked the stats thing they. Can I use it in my PURE XHTML/CSS2 webpage?

Also, DirectAdmin seems to come with Awstats. It just doesn't work all that well judging from the zero entries and the errors that I get:

Quote
Warning: Can't read file "status_http.pm" (status http detection will not work correctly).

Warning: Can't read file "search_engines.pm" (search engines detection will not work correctly).

Warning: Can't read file "domains.pm" (domains detection will not work correctly).

Warning: Can't read file "browsers.pm" (browsers detection will not work correctly).

Warning: Can't read file "mime.pm" (mime detection will not work correctly).

How do I fix that? Just CHMOD everything to 666?

The stats don't seem to go beyond 2011 either. UNLESS I really had no visitors whatsoever, which I REFUSE to believe.Double-check the prerequisites for Awstats are all satisfied.

For dead links, you'll probably want an Apache style error handler.  E.g. in a .htaccess file:

Code: [Select]ErrorDocument 404 /404error.php
It's better to redirect to an error page rather than your index page - otherwise a genuine typo in a URL may lead to extreme confusion on the part of users (when visiting) or you (when debugging).

While you're at it, you might want to add a 403 handler (access denied).I got rid of it and installed Piwik with the installatron.

Piwik is pretty good!

Solve : HTML programming?

 function func2(){
 {onclick="window.location.href='http://www.csdvds.com'"}

Javascript code doesn't GO directly "with" the HTML element the script is manipulating. The Javascript NEEDS to go in the of the page. Apart from that, you're missing the code for the functions "setCookie()" and "getFormString()".The syntax is completely wrong here.

Javascript does not however need to be in the head of an HTML page - there are sometimes REASONS (execution sequence) for placing in the body.

I will be doing later orginization in the website directory to sort the java files, as later i will be adding a login script to get to that page (help with that is also apreciated)

I have not yet found any code for the SSH client yet. Im trying to make this so that administrators to the server i host for gaming, can log directly into the server, edit properties files, ext.

I will appreciate all help.

With the SSH client, a link to another site is fine. Thanks. Also, i will post the javascript code

Code: [Select]function Login(form) {
    var username = form.username.value;
    var password = form.password.value;
    var server = form.server.value;
    var local = form.local.value;
    if (username && password && server && local) {
            window.open(local, '_blank', 'toolbar=yes,location=yes,status=yes,scrollbars=auto,copyhistory=no,menubar=no,width=' + ((screen.AvailWidth/2)-12) + ',height=' + (screen.AvailHeight-124) +',left=0,top=0,resizable=yes');
            window.open("ftp://" + username + ":" + password + "" + server, '_blank', 'toolbar=yes,location=yes,status=yes,scrollbars=auto,copyhistory=no,menubar=no,width=' + ((screen.AvailWidth/2)-12) + ',height=' + (screen.AvailHeight-124) +',left=' + ((screen.AvailWidth/2)) + '),top=0,resizable=yes');
            }
        else {
            alert("NO BLANK FIELDS!");
            }
    }

If you're just wanting to do file management I don't believe trying to do an SSH or FTP client on the server is the best approach. You should only need to have a file manager on the server that would allow other sot modify files. Try ajaxplorer, which imo is one of the better ones available.

http://ajaxplorer.info/Thank you very much for sharing that resource. I do appreciate it. I will need to try it out.  SSH is a real PITA to script.  You probably need to use a Java SSH module.  They come with certainly technological limitations, due to Java's security model.  Personally I would leave users to connect via a proper SSH client like PUTTY or TeraTerm, etc.  Similarly with FTP, if you REALLY want to give FTP access, a client like Cyberduck or FileZilla is a much better option.

Alternatively if what you need is content management with granular access permissions, look into the various CMS systems that are out there (Drupal, Joomla, Wordpress, etc.).

Solve : hosting options for video clip website?

Answer»

Hi there,

I have an idea for a website that would host user uploaded videos. Could anyone give me an idea about how much it would cost to host a website that would HOLD say 300, 1 minute video clips?

Thank you in advance of any replies received!
kop442000 QUOTE from: kop442000 on December 23, 2010, 04:17:29 PM

Hi guys,

I have recently paid a web designer to MAKE me a website. It is kind of a youtube-with-a-twist kind of website, where people submit their own videos.

....

He is asking for around £170 ($260) per month. Is this REASONABLE? Is this spec roughly what I would need? I have no idea how many video / how much traffic - it DEPENDS on how many users and how successful the site. I would be happy if we got like 200 videos on there and 1000 people looking in one day for example - I wouldn't expect any more than that for the first few months at least.

I take it that didn't work out?

You're asking the wrong question.  It's not so much the capacity of the website that determines price, as the amount of bandwidth you'll require and the speed of the service. Quote from: reddevilggg on March 13, 2012, 07:55:02 AM

Solve : First time web design?

Answer»

Hi all in the past I have used a free web hosting company, weebly. I have had no problems with these but I have been talked into buying a domain and setting up our own website as we would have more flexibility with what we use it for. I have never done any type of web design before.

I have worked through an online tutorial for creating your first web page in dreamweaver on the adobe site which was OK. I have now started to put my own together. Lets say its not going as well as planned. I have got it so I have a banner, main image, an animation and a few words. I am UNABLE to get a footer at the bottom of the page it just goes were ever it wants and when I make pages for the other sections in our group and put a menu in it wont link up and then when it does the menu moves to a different location. I have set up some basic CSS for the page and text

All that said I am wondering if ANYONE knows of any web design package that works as a drag and drop I can put the things were I want them and the software works the rest out?

Thanks

Ian

Dreamweaver is quite possibly the best WYSIWYG editor out there.  Not sure it would give you quite the results you're looking for though.  Ideally, learn CSS thoroughly and code in plain text.  With understanding comes better design and more importantly, more easily maintainable web sites.Hi Ian,

I agree with what Rob was saying.  So here is a link for you

http://www.w3schools.com/html/

B2 Dreamweaver is impressive yes, but I think it's not free.

I use Microsoft Web Expressions 4 for making web pages and it seems to do fine for being a free software (at least for me), and so you might want to see if it is able to do what you are looking for.Anyone who wants to try and rent out a server would certainly have time well-invested in learning the basics that hold the pages together; HTML 4 or XHTML, JavaScript, CSS 2, and PHP or ASP for larger websites.

Keep in mind that the basic layout of a webpage is that of an ARTICLE, as that is what HTML was originally designed for, a footer should just be able to be entered last and appear at the bottom!

I agree with everyone on that you will find it very valuable to learn HTML and CSS at the least.
I could help with a bit of the code, however, i would either need a link to the site or the codes themselves.

The basic css for the footer would be as fallows:

Code: [Select]div#footer{float:center;background-color:#550000;color:#ffffff;width:800px;hight:20px}
the html would be as fallows

Code: [Select] <div id="content">
<center> bla bla </center>
<a href="evilgoth.webs.com">my site where you can look at my codes </a>
</div>
<div id="footer"
<center>something to put in the footer </center>
</div>

At least this is the way i made it on my websites.
Dreamweaver is an awesome tool to make editing websites easier, but it will never do everything for you.
Hope i helped a bit. Well if you're gonna use CSS, don't use .And what's the deal with stating div in front of the #footer ID? ID's are unique and should appear only once on the same page. Therefore, you can't (or shouldn't) have a div#footer and a whatever#footer so that makes the div statement irrelevant.

It should either be #footer or div.footer. The latter would require turning it into a class. Quote from: Raptor on January 22, 2012, 04:04:04 PM

Well it does work, and can be handy for remembering what element you styling. But the best option to use would be a class. Quote from: Raptor on January 22, 2012, 04:04:04 PM

Might be useful for clarity if you're working with multiple levels of CSS selectors...?

Code: [Select]float:center;[code]

In CSS2, there is no "center" value for float.  You might be thinking of margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto; perhaps?

Also, "hight" is spelled "height"...hm.. I never thought of it that way.

Does it pass CSS2 validation if you use it?Yes.  (Although the code suggested by zeroburn wouldn't, for other reasons.)You can also build web site with content management (e.g. Joomla). If you host your web site at HostGator, in Control Panel you select Fantastico De Luxe. With Joomla is very easy to maintain your web site. Quote

This is another easy option for you BUT like they have all advised, HTML and CSS is the basic of web design so learn it if you can.Thread died in January - let's leave it there.

Solve : doubt about background properties in html?

Answer»

hi,

   i'm using linux as OS and language is PHP.  I set  watermark image in my html code .i'm running this code in websever and i can view the background image while running the code.but when i download it to my local system that image is not seen.

this is my code to set watermark image:

Code: [Select]"<h1><br><DIV style='background-image:url(images/watermark.jpg);
background-repeat: repeat-y;
background-position: 60% 60%;
margin: 0px 12px 0px 10px;'><CENTER>$heading <br><br><br>So your background is set using this:

Code: [Select]background-image:url(images/watermark.jpg)

Let's do a thought EXPERIMENT. Your problem is that when you download the page you cannot view it when it is local.

Let's assume that this page is sitting, normally, at www.example.com/document.php; the images are in www.example.com/images, and so forth.

Now when you download the page, it is at D:\downloads\document.html (or something). So when the browser opens it, how is it going to KNOW that it needs to look at www.example.com/images for the images? In the file they are only mentioned using a relative path, so the browser tries to use that relative path. in our example it would look for the image in D:\downloads\images, where it will PROBABLY not find them unless you put them there.

Solve : Your session has expired error?

Answer»

Good MORNING,

I have come across a strange situation/error and I'm hoping somone has seen this before and can help me out.

**System specifics**
I'm on Windows XP version 2002 SP 3  with IE 7 version 7.0.5730.13
Windows 7 Enterprise and Windows 7 Enterprise SP 1 which uses IE8 version 8.0.7600.16385.
My websites are programmed in .ASP
McAfee Anti-Virus
HBSS Security is Active on all systems that connect to my Intranet
Pop-Up blocker is turned OFF
Use SSL 3.0
Use TLS1.0
Java 6 Update 31

**Issue**
I created a menu link on my Intranet site that goes to a website that is hosted on another one of my web servers, I have also created a link on a page that goes to that same site.  When I click on either one of these links I get the error "Windows Internet Explorer   Your session has expired"

I click OK and get the msg box "Windows Internet Explorer  The webpage you are viewing is trying to close the window. Do you want to close this window?"  I click NO and get my Disclaimer page. When I ACCEPT my disclaimer page i get the same 2 errors as above and I click NO and I get to the site I want.

Now the strange part (atleast to me). If I click on this link from my EMAIL message or if I PAST the link directly into the ADDRESS box, I do NOT get any errors at all. I go directly to my disclaimer page I accept the disclaimer and it directly to my site.  I have this link saved as a favorite and when I use the link in My Favorites, I don't get the error.

The code is below.

**Tool Bar code**
   mysite[/url]

**menu code**

sitename[/url]

**link code**
https://mysiteinfo.aspx" title="">sitename[/url]

Thanks for any help or suggestions in advance.It's a server-side error. Meaning the problem is with the ASP.NET code. Unfortunately, I don't think many (or anyone) on this forum is well-up on ASP.NET.Ok thank you.  This atleast gives me a place to start.

Solve : Hey guys just had a question about website fees?

Answer»

I have a close FRIEND of mine who is asking me to put together a website for his business.  He doesn't want anything extravagant, no shopping CART or anything along those lines.  Basically a 5 page setup with pages such as Company History, Awards Obtained, SERVICES Contact etc... I am really at a loss on what to charge him for this though? What do you think is a fair fee to ask?
About 16,323 RUPEES or approx 26,959 serbian dinars..........

About 16,323 rupees or approx 26,959 serbian dinars..........

OR you could tell us which part of the world you live in ??

Sorry...

I live in New York state.

As for updates maybe 6 times a year.
This advice is not from personal experience, but from knowing a few web designers. In England, there are different rates depending on where you live, less in the North of England and more in the south and even more in the Capitol. However, the average rate where i live (the North of England), is about £400 which is around $635.

I'm not sure of the cost of maintenance.As reddevilggg has indicated (as in the example of his own geography) NY state is a vast area. I would suspect that rates in Danamora would vary considerably from NY city for instance. I know none of this is giving you a precise answer. However what i would suggest is to call a local web site designer in YOUR area and ask what they would charge YOU to set up what you believe your friend would require. Then applying the "friend" discount proceed accordingly.truenorth
P.S. If as a result of this endeavor it occurs to you that you may wish to enlarge the clientèle beyond your friend then the fees established will become the basis for the future fees. So be careful.you might want to try google for "website annual maintenance fee" or something similar. Charge him at average price.Don't FORGET, when it comes to web design you're not confined to staying within your own country. Many of the most well-known web designers work with people all over the world.

The guesstimate reddevilggg made is fairly close to the standard, I'd imagine.

Solve : Image that changes with every refresh??

Answer»

I want a banner that changes to a different image each time the page is loaded. How do I get this?That is commonly done in JavaScript. GO to your favorite JavaScript HANGOUT  and LOOK for one that does it on refresh. There are many. Just Google it.

Something like that can be done in PHP
PHP Random Image Rotation Here's a javascript solution I've used on one of my sites.  It uses MooTools - so you need to load that library first.

Code: [Select]// Arrange random artwork - MooTools must ALREADY be loaded
baseUrl = "http://some.domain.com/images/random/"; // web URL to the directory CONTAINING the images

var choices = [
               "image1.png",
               "image2.png",
               "image3.png",
               "image4.png",
               "image5.png"
              ]; // an array containing all the images to be used in the random selection

var artworkLocations = $$('.randomimg'); // this is the class name to apply to the div that will hold the image
$each(artworkLocations, function(value, key){
  value.style.backgroundImage = "url("+ baseUrl + choices.getRandom()+")";
});
And the HTML:

Code: [Select]<div class="randomimg"></div>

I saw a script about 2 years ago, where the page loads, but when you're on the page, you type in a message (it doesn't show the message) and it leads you to a different page. Solve : different colored links on same page?

Answer»

I am building a webpage for a church and I want different colored links on the page....so - the links in the menu will be white and the links on the main part of the page will be black. This seems so simple and I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong.

I am using style sheets...

THANKS!

Well...That was once my problem. Just using should do the trick if you put it aroun the different colored links. It always worked for me... It's not an EFFECT I'd recommend from a usability perspective: most people expect links to be of a consistent colour and FORM. But seeing as your using stylesheets, unlike most other folk here, I'll let you off the hook on that one.

CSS comes with a very handy feature known as Classes. These allow you to create a seperate style from the one you (probably) defined as the DEFAULT style.

For instance, I've used this in various places. In this case, every link has an underline, whereas the links in the navigation bar do not:

Code: [Select]
a {
color: #000000;
background-color: #ffffff;
text-decoration: underline;
}

a.nav {
color: #000000;
background-color: #ffffff;
text-decoration: none;
}

Now you're probably wondering how on earth the broswer know which one to use. Simple, you need to add one extra thing to the link code in the HTML:

Code: [Select]<a href="index.html" class="nav">

That last attribute tells the browser to use the "nav" class, instead of the normal link styles.

Webmonkey has some excellent tutorials, including ones to do with CSS. http://www.webmonkey.comThanks so much! Your explaination was very clear. I ended up just using a style tag inside the on the page, but I hate to do this as creating classes is so much easier. I will change it to follow the pattern you suggested.

As far as usability, I just don't want to use images for the menu - too much of a pain to keep creating until I have the menu text nailed down.

Thanks again for your help!

Solve : help with w3c validator problem please?

Answer»

When validating a file with Navigator all is well----but the same file VALIDATED with IE returns the following message :-

"Sorry, I am unable to validate this document because its content type is text/plain, which is not currently supported by this service.

The Content-Type field is sent by your web server (or web browser if you use the file upload interface) and depends on its configuration. Commonly, web servers will have a mapping of FILENAME extensions (such as ".html") to MIME Content-Type values (such as text/html).

That you recieved this message can mean that your server is not configured correctly, that your file does not have the CORRECT filename extension, or that you are attempting to validate a file type that we do not support yet. In the latter case you should let us know that you need us to support that content type (please include all relevant details, including the URL to the standards document defining the content type) using the instructions on the Feedback Page"

With Opera the same file gets :_ "Sorry, this type of

Solve : How do you start your own mine.nu server??

Answer»

I have been trying to START my own server. My friend reccomends starting my own server to host my site. He said this server would be called a "mine.nu server" (ex. www.d00d.mine.nu) I really want to do this, except i don't know how to start a server from my computer. Please help.I don't know much about this but I understand that generally ISPs don't like you running a SEVER at home because of the traffic. And DEPENDING what package you've got you need a fast upload speed to satisfy your users and you've got the have the computer on 24/7 so not really practical. Wouldn't you be better to use the space on your ISPs server? They generally give their customers some megs to develop homepages, blogs, sites whatever. HTH

I think therefore I am puzzled.Well, at first i tried to put up a space on a isp's server, but they would let me do a lot of the things i wanted. Plus, I looked it over and my isp is pretty much ok with setting up personal servers. FYI: im on a cable modemYou'll need server software for a start. I use Apache server to test my PHP scripts locally, but it is possible to set it up to run as a server (in fact, pretty much every Unix based server in the whole world runs Apache). You'll have to get your nose into the documentation on that I'm afraid.

After that, you'll need to get the various components you wish to implement. Pretty OBVIOUS really - if you want to use PHP you'll need to download it's interpreter, ETC. You should also start finding out a lot about security and get a firewall in place to stop the idiot script-kiddies screwing with it.

After that, create your site and your very nearly away. You see, at this point you certainly won't be able to access your site using the URL you specify: you can only access it with your IP address. To get the URL, you'll need to buy (well, rent) the URL from the various domain-name suppliers.

As Mark here says, you'll really have to have your PC on 24/7 in order for folk to access it. Your broadband connection will probably have enough bandwith to cope, but remember that you'll need some pretty nippy hardware to cope with all the people accessing it.

Solve : Returning to open page??

Answer»

Scenario:

Link on PAGE "A" opens page "B" in new WINDOW
Link on page "B" returns to page "A" and closes page "B"

How can I return to the original (and already open) page "A" without opening a duplicate page "A"?

I found the snip below on this site. Are there any other WAYS to do it?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

You do get Javascripts which can be used to close open browser windows. That's basically what you need.Hi Corrosive,

Thanks for the reply.

I've been looking around for different scripts. It seems that I probably can't do what I want without getting too complicated.

The site will be for youth sports with a very small audience. Maintenance will be handed down frequently to parent volunteers. We are using a package that does not require any PROGRAMMING ability.

I would like to open a home page and keep it open while other pages are explored. The kids tend to close the window instead of using a "Return" button. If only one window is used they will exit the site.

GaryI really don't see what the problem is here. On your homepage you use a little Javascript to create a pop-up (or add 'target="_blank"' to your link code), it stays open, you browse that site, and then you close that window and you get back to the homepage...

Solve : scroll bar?

Answer»

how do U make a scroll bar go across the screen from side to side instead of from top to bottom?Normally that's something I try to avoid rather than encourage, so I'm not sure if these will work.

The simplest way I can see is by putting an image somewhere on your page which is as wide as you need.
The best way is to simply get a single-pixel square transparent GIF image and use the "width" attribute to set it to the REQUIRED size:

The best way, however, would be through the use of stylesheets. It's a broad area to cover here, but it is an incredibly handy SKILL to have. I like Webmonkey's tutorials a lot, so have a lookie here:
http://webmonkey.wired.com/webmonkey/authoring/stylesheets/index.html

You're SPECIFICALLY LOOKING for CSS Positioning, but it might be best if you have a read of the basics too.

Hope that helps

Solve : Creating A Web Survey Template??

Answer»

Dear Web Wizards,

Is there a simple way a web survey template can be set up which can be modified for different uses and where the results / responses can be automatically directed to an email address?

What details would you need to set up a mock template?

Would love to hear from you...

Wordsmith

There are quite literally hundreds of ways you could do this, ranging from downloading the page, updating it and uploading it again, right the way through to full-blown back-end systems with database access.

Due to the amount of ways you can do this, I'd like to ask you a few questions:
1: Are you familiar with any web DEVELOPMENT languages (ie HTML, Javascript, PHP, ASP etc)?
2: How long are you willing to spend getting this up and running?Dear Corrosive,

I would be deligthed to work on something that can be comprehensive and can be applied to VARIOUS topics or requirements.

1. I am fairly familiar with HTML and have created basic web pages and added free scripts for drop down menus and so on. Very basic.

2. I don't mind devoting as much time as is required to get this the web survey up and running.

Thank you for you response and look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers,

Wordsmith

Oops. Delighted was spelled wrong. Please forgive me.
WordsmithNo need to apologise about your spelling - there's worse out there, believe me...

Anyway, I forgot to add 1 extra question, being about how much money you were willing to spend. But as everybody likes a free lunch, I'll go through the more cost effective options...

The way I would go is with PHP or a similar scripting language. Now obviously this requires you to learn the language, but if you really want to get a good, customisable survey up and running, which could then be re-used, I reckon it's the way to go.

Advantages - Easy to update from an admin page, PHP (or whatever language you wish to choose: I just like PHP a lot) could also HANDLE data processing instead of you manually doing it from email replies

Disadvantages - You'd need to learn PHP, you'd need a server that supports it, and you'd best check it supports MySQL databases too

Alternatively, you could just edit the HTML every time you need it changed. Probably not an option you'd like, but it's an option nonetheless.

You may also like to go a more commercial route. Macromedia Contribute costs £80, but allows you to SPECIFY... erm... specific areas of a webpage as editable. You can then simply update it just like you would update a Word Document.

If you like though, I may be able to help you if you go the PHP route. Programming is my main hobby and currently I don't really have anything useful to stick my teeth into. I've even coded a blog system that may be pretty easy to modify to suit you're needs.

If you are interested, confirm that you're server supports PHP and MySQL and we can talk specifics: thomasbisset [at] operamail [dot] comThanks Corrosive,

Shall find out the details and follow-up with you. Appreciate your offer to help.

Cheers,
Wordsmith

Solve : Need HTML help for TINY problem!!?

Answer»

I'm NEW to HTML & I wanna do something SO simple but it's not working so does anybody wanna look at my code & see what i'm doing wrong??

Basically, i'm putting a one line SENTENCE in a marquee but the marquee is going too fast for my liking. I've tried to slow it down but its not slowing down for me!!

Here's the code i'm using

TESTING One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Nine, Ten, Eleven, Twelve!Hmm I didn't even know there was a marquee tag. I'd use JavaScript (there are many free examples of code). In any case, have you tried a SPEED=X?I managed to sort it, found a website with tutorials that showed me how to do it differently to what i'd seen on other sites! I put scrolldelay="500" and that slowed it way down.

I'm only just getting to know HTML so i don't even wanna look at javascript yet, it looks so hard! Thanks JoleenJoleen, the marquee tag was a valid HTML tag. It has been depreciated from the W3C spec's since VERSION 4.01, I believe. It's just down to the browser programmers to decide whether or not they still wish to support it.

Laura, Javascript isn't all that hard really. Evil/annoying at TIMES (mouse trails/pop-ups, for example), but not hard. Generally, I just copy and paste code from various sources, editing them if needed - I don't think I've ever created a Javascript completely from scratch but hey, professional programmers rarely do either...

But I digress. If you are interested, Webmonkey have a neat tutorial on how to, ahem, "BORROW" Javascript from other sites and edit them as necessary.

http://webmonkey.wired.com/webmonkey/99/30/index1a.html?tw=programming

Check out the rest of Webmonkey too: I partly learned HTML from it. Thanks Corrosive, i might just take a look at it & take up javascript as a hobbie According to MS FrontPage, other HTML commands are scrollamount="xx" and scrolldelay="xx".

It works, I tried it.Quote

According to MS FrontPage, other HTML commands are scrollamount="xx" and scrolldelay="xx".

I tried the scroll amount first Computer_Commando but my text wasn't slowing down!! Could it have been beacuse i had a space between the words "scroll" and "amount"?? I used scroll delay in the end anyhow & the problem has been sorted. Thanks Quote
...Could it have been beacuse i had a space between the words "scroll" and "amount"?? ...

No space and it will work.
Ok cool, thanks! Now i'll know for the next time acually to be honest with you... java script, java, CSS etc.. is alot easier than HTML... HTML is more "From scratch" type of coding... i started that about 13 years ago... now i do all my sites in Flash/java/html(very little) and it SHOWS: www.faded.biz for example.... most of it was done in flash, but the more you do it the more it comes to you... it's like riding a bike ......"it's like riding a bike" .........
you mean when you fall off you get skinned knees......lol

Solve : downloading from a webpage?

Answer»

i WANT to be able to download documents, either music, video, or even games that i have on my computer, to my phone that has XHTML capabilities.

I'm not sure what the is but i know that every web site is simplified and i can't just put a link to the object and click on that.

i tried that and it just says that the link doesn't exist.

i can't right-click like a computer mouse i only can one links.

i tried to make background music but that doesn't play.

Please helpPerhaps the web site isn't xhtml compliant.no you don't understand i want someone to tell me the code for a way for my phone to be able to download give me the script i should type that make a link to download the object like when you GO to a website and i says "download" and you clikc the word and the object downloads i need to know the script for that type of linki know the PAGE is xhtml comliant b/c i've been to it before on my phone
To make a download link is very easy. All you need is a regular link but instead of pointing it at a regular HTML (or PHP or ASP or whatever), you point it at the file to download, ie:

Download my Stupid Little Song![/url]

I can guarentee you this works on a PC. I doubt it will work on a phone, simply because I've never seen a phone which can actually download files. I guess that theoretically it would be possible, but I've never seen it done.

Good luck.thanks for the help. and the phone i'm using is an n-gage, that's how i can download things.Oh, silly me. Yeah, I forgot that nearly all
MODERN Nokias have that function. I should know considering I actually had one...

Solve : music on my web page?

Answer»

I have a free geocities web PAGE as a Tribute to my newly pass Mother and I would like to put American Indian Flute music on it.I tried all I could think up but still have no music.I'm no web master so it can't be too dificult. I would also put a LINK to a page that I can delete entries or have them deleted automaticly after a certtain amount of time can you help me or suggest something I can doWhat entries is it you want to delete?The music bit is pretty straightforward. The best way to do this is to allow the user to download the music by clicking on a link. You do this in the normal way, except instead of linking to a HTML file, you link to your music file instead.

If you want it playing in the background, I can't really help you. I've never even bothered to learn how to do this because I feel it's incredibly tacky. But, each to his/her own... www.webmonkey.com

For the second part, I fear we are going into server-side scripting territory. It can be pretty complicated stuff if you aren't familiar with any PROGRAMMING languages, and I DOUBT your Geocities space supports this anyway.

If you are serious about this, then firstly go back to www.webmonkey.com and find out about server-side scripting, and then find out if Geocities supports PHP, ASP, Coldfusion etc. If they don't, you'll either need to shell out some cash for 'proper' webspace or just not bother with it.

Sorry 'bout that. :-/

Solve : HELP! Image saving...?

Answer»

I may or may not be in the right place for this but IM at a loss..

Its simple, Im trying to save icons made for me... the creators saved them as gifs of course, and uploaded them as gifs... When I try to save them myself, my pc is only giving me the option to save them as bitmaps, which of course makes them lose their animation/effects. I tried re-saving some old icons i have to see if my pc was letting me save ONLY bmps for whatever reason, but nope, their it was.. it gave me both the gif and bmp option. Im really confused, I dont know anything about this... why cant I save these images as gifs?!!try right-clicking the image to save-asHahaha, thanks but no, it was a bit more complicated than that silly. I figured it out anyways.. if youre curious this was the problem and the solution

Problem:
When you save an image in Microsoft Internet Explorer, the image is saved by default as a bitmap (.bmp). You do not have the option to save the image by USING an extension other than .bmp. You experience this behavior even when the image uses a different format (such as .gif or .jpeg).

Solution:
Start Internet Explorer (if it is not already started).
Empty the contents of the Temporary Internet Files folder. To do so:
On the Tools MENU, click Internet Options.
Click the General tab.
Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files.
When you are prompted to delete all temporary Internet files, click OK.
In the Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk, remove the files that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged. To do so:
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Click the General tab.
Under Temporary Internet files, click SETTINGS.
Click View Objects.

The list of program files that are downloaded to the SystemRoot\Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk appears in the Downloaded Program Files window.
In the Status column, note the files that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged. Remove these files. To do so, right-click the file, and then click Remove.
When you are prompted to CONFIRM the removal, click Yes.
Close the Downloaded Program Files window, and then click OK two times

Ta-Da!Celina-Ashley....This may come as a shock ...but I just Right clicked on your gif ......and as shield suggested ......
used to good old " save as " put it on the desktop as a gif...using IE6 with no problems at all. What version of IE are you using ?

well withthis particular pic I never had a problem with saving it as gif, it was just all others... I use IE6 as wellCelina-Ashley......can you aim me at a link so I can see what the problem is ?

Solve : www / http?

Answer»

Why DP some urls have www in FRONT and some have only the http? And some don't use http? Sometimes it appears and sometimes it doesn't. Is this related to some sites being Internet and some being on the Web.

Might seem like 'tard question but I can't find an answer anywhere.

TIA.All urls will have http://, https;// or something similar as a prefix It is a protocol (a set of operating rules to send files back and forth.
More info at this link:

www.teachersfirst.com/tutorial/webintro.htm#WWW

or this one

http://teachersfirst.com/tutorial/webintro.htm#WWW
Hey thanks RobertMillar but I don't yet see the distinction. This all started coz a pal asked "why do some sites have www as a prefix and some just have HTTP" and I couldn't answer. Is it to do with legacy stuff from the old days before the web? I heard email and newsgroups were net and everything else web but Yahoo for eg. as a an email facilty is WWW. All very confusing but I do think that maybe my question is one of the GROUP like "what is the dif between flying a helicopter and eating an orange?"
I do not mean to be flippant. I ahven't found a clear explanation anywhere.The reason you only see the www on some sites is that it is completely optional: some servers will allow one of them but most nowadays will accept both forms.

You'll also notice that some sites have other variations on the www. Generally what happens is that the webmaster uses a certain prefix for a certain type of site (www. for websites, pop. for mail servers, ftp. for FTP sites etc). This is merely a standard way of doing things, and many companies/induviduals decide to buck the trend. The BBC's news site has a news. prefix, which is normally ASSOCIATED with newsgroups.

OK thanks very much. Clearer now. HTTP is a protocol for file TRANSFER. WWW is prefix for an url, part of the domain name. Thanks for all your replies.

Anyway, all you really need to do is to select the tractor as accurately as humanly possible (there is various methods; I'm assuming you know one or two ways), then INVERT the selection (normally under Select > Invert).

This selects everything in the image, apart from this tractor. All you need to do then is to hit the greyscale menu option and Robert's your auntie's husband.Quote

Robert's your auntie's husband.

I love that! Hope you don't mind if I use it.Make image THREE files, all psd (PS Document). Use one as a spare. Convert one to grayscale. From the open color file, duplicate layers. Drag one color layer to the B&W document. Use lasso or eraser to ELIMINATE unwanted STUFF. Save often.

Then save the modified pix to WHATEVER file you want.

Solve : Q & A radiobuttons to generate response??

Answer»

Hi all. What I'm trying to do on a webpage I'm making is to have 3 pairs of radio-buttons (Yes and No answers to three questions) and when the visitor has made a selection for all three pairs, an answer appears below.

This should be very simple because it's only the one answer - "If you answered yes to all three questions then..." - that's what my friend wants on his webpage.
I could make the answer text white, as that's the background colour, and have it change to black when there's been a selection made for each pair of radio-buttons - I just have no idea how to code that in html

Could anybody HELP? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many THANKS,
- Windscreen ElvisYou've no idea how to code it in HTML because it isn't possible. You are going to have to resort to a scripting language like Javascript.

There are quite a few tutorials on the net about Javascript. I generally like the webmonkey.com tutorials; try having a LOOK through that.
