I'm trying to teach myself HTML and Javascript. The basic books SEEMS to skip over some "basics." Lot's of programming. I don't think there's a WAY around it... and having the adobe master collection isn't GOING to help with php, I'm afraid.

That's probably going to be the easiest way to learn quickly. You could try learning online, but finding an online tutorial that is as QUALITY and in depth as a book is somewhat difficult.
I suspect you need something a bit better than a Freewebs service. You don't however need to learn any programming. Get yourself a PHP/MySQL-enabled web account and then install Joomla. There's a bit of a learning curve but not as much as learning a web programming language and database design.

I update a website fairly often. Updating always means:
1) downloading the file to edit
2) editing
3) uploading.

This is because When I click on the file in my windows 'my network places' window,
I am not OFFERED the option to 'open with'. If I open the file, PHP are default opened by a browser, not an editor.
This can't be the only way of doing this job. Can anyone suggest a way that I could update the files without the download, upload steps?

I edit HTML & PHP files with simple text editors. Like Crimson Editor, or Kate (when using linux)

So, any ideas?Two things.
If you want php files to be opened with an editor open your Windows EXPLORER, and click on Tools ---> Folder Options. From here you select File Types, select PHP and click on Change, to change the program you want them to open with.

Now about the DL-Edit-UL steps. Well if you want to change files there's only one quicker way I can think of.

Leave all the files for the website on your computer and if you need to edit one, simply open it from your computer, edit it and upload it to the site.
You'll be asked to Overwrite, click Yes.
I use PSPad exclusively for web design (it's a text mode syntax highlighting programmer's editor). PSPad has a built in FTP client which enables you to directly edit files on a remote server.*

I done recommend this method though, if you have any interest in change control, preservation of backups etc. If you make a mistake and realise too late, that's it. You've blown your only COPY of the file.




*Actually, that's a bit of a simplification - it downloads them to a temporary local LOCATION and then uploads the changed file when you hit save. But the file transmission is done transparently.

I bought a domain something.net at godaddy.com and i want to put my Invisionfree forum there. I've arranged the DNSs at dns.siel.si, where I wrote in this data:

TYPE: CNAME
domain name: something.net
subdomain: www
adress: z15.invisionfree.com

I got 3 DNSs there and I entered them in godaddy section for my domain. I entered something.net in my Invision domain manager and set it to default domain.

Here's the catch: www.something.net is WORKING and the main forum page shows with no PROBLEMS, but when i try to click sublinks (other sections of the forum), they won't load! While browser is loading the page there's a message at the bottom Loading http://something.net/wawawa...., so the www part is missing. When i enter www MANUALLY in the URL, the subforum loads with no problem.

How can I mend the settings so the subforums will load with no problem (that is, with www automaticly in URL)?

Please please PLEASE HELP!!!did you install the forum into the main directory? Most forums require that the forum be installed into a subdirectory like something.net/forum. They www usually doesn't matter as far as I know.AFAIK there is only one POSIBILITY of connecting this forum with the domain, and that is via Domain manager in forum CONTROL panel. I'm using Windows XP SP2. I'm creating a forum using IkonBoard, PHP 5.2.5 and FFDB 2.8. Now, I'm only new to this so I'll read the manual for each product, but I need an answer for each question:

1. Will IkonBoard, PHP or FFDB slow down my system or hog my disk space? I only have 256MB RAM and 17GB disk space left.

2. When my computer is turned off, I assume the server won't be available. Is this correct?

3. I have a lot of private information on my computer, will this data be accessible via the server?

Actually I wouldn't recommend running a server on a computer used for storing personal data.

How do I attach (embed?) an image in an email so that it will appear as the body of the message and not as an attachment?What email SERVICE are you using? Yahoo Mail, Gmail, etc? or Outlook?
In outlook, you just need to drag the image into the body of the message.
In yahoo mail, hotmail and gmail, I suspect you need to attach the image and then insert an html image tag where you want it to SHOW up. Like this:

Use the new Yahoo Mail front end. When you compose a message you have an option to go into "rich TEXT" mode, which allows you to insert images.In neither classic nor new Yahoo! Mail, the rich text composition doesn't have a command to insert images.

I am stuck. I want to make someone input an email address when they fill out my contact form. I am getting people putting there names and leaving me no way to contact them. I have recently installed Apache, MySQL 5.0 and PHP on my computer but I can't figure out how to get it going. It asks me for the host name, port and other things aswell.
Can someone please help me? First TIME I set up a web SERVER, I spent weeks trying to get all the configurations right and never did figure out how it all works together. My advice to you is to download xampp from www.apachefriends.org and let it configure everything for you.I actually have XAMPP installed but I don't really understand how to use it to its full potential.

Thanks.You shouldn't have to do anything to it to get it going. Just install it and open a browser to http://localhost/ and set a few passwords to secure it.

I still need help with my other question though about adding more pages to my site what do i name the file? im confused here... any help would be nice ...thanks again...well if your okay with HTML you should know how to work on those other pages. once completed, there should be a file upload tool somewhere around geocities, use that to upload the html file and you should be able to see a URL of the document. you want to copy that and use that as the URL for the link to it (probably on the index for now).

If you want a quick HTML made up, I have a free utility I made for download onmy site, you can alter the HTML's when your done. You can also alter the file itself, just please dont redistribute the altered version. I know I put the PESKY little made by thing in there just to be a pain lol.

For comments, you would need a form to submit comments into a mysql database to store the comments. then to display them, you will need a php program to extract the info from the database and insert it into the comments page.

I've been messin around with either doing a website...or a BLOG for some BUSINESS PURPOSES. Nothing big but I was wondering if I can work with most blog sites...like blogger...the same as a site. I have a trellix web software but i create nice and i post to yahoo, but yahoo don't have i what to do now.What do you mean by "post to yahoo"? trellix is used to create web pages, right? So, how do you "post" a web page to Yahoo!? Doesn't MAKE sense.post to yahoo as in geocities? I know they have their own little free HOSTING or whatever. Create your WEBPAGE in trellix and save it then go to your yahoo account and upload it just like you would any other file. make sure all your PATHS are correct or images and things wont work.

I am a bit new to css, but im a pretty fast learner and understand the basics. My problem is that I have a nav bar with custom bullets and they SEEM to overlap with the text/links next to them. Im not sure why or how to fix this?

Well I've read all the PREVIOUS POST about how to place a link to download files. I;ve tried them and one work to an EXTENT. I am able to download the file to my desktop from my the target folder. HOWEVER when I attempt to open the zipped file it brings up an error saying the file is corrupted. The zipped file onyl contains a simple text document. Ultimately I need to download an exe file. The examples are for a jpg file. Files will only have extended properties which make logical sense. For instance, pictures will not have an album title property.

Attributes accessed through the Shell.Application are read-only. Normally I try not to have posters download stuff, but in this case you'll need to download and install the DSOFile COM component.

With DSO the properties are still read-only except for Author, Category, Comments, Company, Keywords, LastEditedBy, Manager, Subject, and Title. With DSO you can also create your own custom properties.

Have searched all over the internet for this answer. People have plenty of ideas on how to do it but they do not start from scratch...Everyone presumes that you know SOMETHING. I do not know anything about wordpress and PHP.

What I am looking for is to access the template html to edit. Everyone says to go to yoursite/wp-content/sidebar.php etc etc.. But how do I get there..Nothing seems to work.FTP???I FOUND out why I could not do it... Everyone failed to mention that you cannot do ftp while hosted with Wordpress. If you have a Wordpress template hosted somewhere else you can put adsense in anywhere you want, and very EASILY...

b)how can i call php pages from a html page? , i DONT want to open them .. just use them when a page is opened ,
say my index.html page , when they surf to the address how can i load the ban.php script i have without it beeing noticed when it opens?

(a) You could just keep a flat file of banned IP addresses in a TEXT file elsewhere on the web server. Search through it with (e.g.) strpos() and append (if the IP is not present) using fopen() etc.

That said, this is a bad idea. Many people could access the web site and be banned simultaneously, causing multiple read-writes to the banned list. The results are undefined. This is why you should really use a multi-user database (e.g. MySQL) for this kind of problem.

A word of warning: IP-banning is a little pointless. Many people may share the same IP address as far as your web server is concerned. (E.g. corporate LAN, several users on a home LAN or behind a proxy server such as AOL.) Your banning algorithm would need to be reasonably tight to avoid indiscriminate banning of innocent users. (E.g. taking account of username as well as IP address, or by means of a unique stored cookie.) Again this pretty much presupposes the use of a database.

(b) Configure your web server to pass html pages through the PHP parser as well (instructions vary depending on the web server in use). Then you can use &LT;?php include(...); ?> as normal.thanks man , but im new to php still and cant figure out how to use strpos() and fopen() to do what i need

I would like to insert a record in the first unused space in a MySQL table. I am using PHP.
I really don't want to loop and look, it seems like overkill. I think MySQL must have command to return the value of the first vacant record to a PHP script.
does anyone know of a command or operation similar to this?

G.R.What do you mean by "vacant record"? Do you mean a record with several FIELDS, all set to NULL? What fields are there in your database?A basic SQL insert statement should PLACE your data in the first available row.
But like (I think) Rob Pomeroy is hinting at this wont work if you have rows filled with null VALUES. If you do, you should really do something about it.

I.P. banning is generally a bad idea because it is indiscriminate and also because it can easily be circumvented.

Don't bother with right click prevention, it is pointless.
All anyone wanting to right click would need to do is disable javascript. I personally have javascript disabled by default whenever I visit a new site for security reasons.

Due to the nature of HTML you cannot prevent users from seeing the source code if they really want to, because the source code NEEDS to be available to the browser.

I have a CSS that creates a two-column TEMPLATE. The column on the right is a "sidebar" column that has a different COLOR from the column on the right.

I have tried editing the CSS, by removing anything refering to the sidebar, but the 2nd column still appears on the right, ALONG with the annoying color.

Is there anyone who can HELP me by viewing the attached css and removing the right column, so the template is actually only one column with a white background?

I feel like such an idiot...

I was looking for the problem in the html file and the css, but after looking through the images folder, I found a file called "content.jpg". This is the actual image of the area of the template that wraps throughout the template...for the content background.

That's where the "light green" column was showing up...

So all I had to do was edit the image to remove that color and, "Voila", problem solved.

It wasn't until I reviewed the HTML, as you suggested, when I found the problem.

Wonder if anyone can help me please. I manage an application that has links to various info pages. Another DEPARTMENT ALSO wants thier info pages linked . Because my application can only be pointed at one server I now have the dilemma of three sets of live information on different servers. My RESOLUTION was to make a link page on one server that I can "see" from within the application. If activated, this then automtically calls second server pages. I thought I would be able to do the same with the new server except it's not working for some reason and I get an invalid page message. below is the page I use that works

I know the URL is UNTIDY but I cannot get that changed as it is a standard used for the business intranet.

The new server is simpler but using the format above I cannot get the link to work. The one difference is the pages are not on the intranet but just on a server in html format.

Again I cannot change the location path, but I do wonder if the element STC'S is an issue as when trying the link, the URL showing does not contain the " ' ". Is there away to force HTML to read this as a character.

The workstations are all Windows Professional SP2 , The servers 2003 Windows server.

The first thing that stuck me is that you have two statements. Make sure you remove one of these as this invalid HTML could CAUSE all types of havoc.

Also your tag is ended with , this too could cause issues.

I'd suggest instead of forwarding the pages the way you explained you're trying below if you need to get to three different pages maybe create a main page with three seperate frames, each containing a page of their own that automatically forward to the page you want. Doing this you could have one page that shows all three pages. Would something like that work?Also meta tags (like the automatic refresh) should not be inside the body, but in between and . Hello, everyone. Is it wrong to use parentheses when NAMING HTML files? After sending a link to a FRIEND via email I noticed that clicking on it resulted in a 404 error. The PAGE loads properly when I follow the link within the site. Any info is appreciated.

I have an SWF file (a SLIDESHOW) which I would like to use in MySpace but it is slowing down my entire page load with the user not seeing anything for around 2 minutes (the file is only 2mb).

I would like the flash player to load the file AFTER the page has loaded, perhaps with a loading animation.

I think I need to use an xml playlist? if so, I'd really appreciate some direction...

Hi, I'm NEW to writing batch files so I'll tell you my goal and what I've come up with so far.

I want the people viewing my web page to be able to click a button and it opens the Nortel Java Device Manager we use here at work with the IP address of the management switch preloaded.

I tried writing a batch file that looked liek this:
CD C:\Program Files\Nortel\JDM
START jdm.jar 1XX.XXX.XXX.XXX

Now that .bat file works for me locally on my PC fine, but when I save it in my root directory of my website (which is on a separate PC/server) and click the button hyperlinked to it, it tells me "http://neteng/DM_LLN.bat" in my webbrowser bar and that "page cannot be found".

Lemme know if this description is too confusing, basically we use a small java application to configure our switches remotely using a GUI and I am making a site with pictures of the switches that you can click on and instantly have the device manager pop up ready to config that switch. I don't think a batch file is the best way to ACCOMPLISH your goal, depending on which side the file should run.mmm Everything is runnin on the webserver. I'm a little unclear I suppose. Ideally the USER should not have to download anything, but I don't know if that's even possible.I think you would have to use a server side language like asp or jsp to accomplish that. I don't think php will let you. You definitely can't do it with HTML or javascript, as those are client side scripts and the server would refuse anything like that for security.
I don't know much about asp or jsp, but I'm pretty sure those languages will allow you to run files on the server. Since you are trying to run a java application, it would probably be best to work with jsp.

Ive been working on a website and Ive been trying to stretch a BACKGROUND. I have a code, however, instead of STRETCHING the whole page, it only stretches it at the top of the document above all the text. Heres the code:

I'm hoping this is a pretty easy thing to do, and that it is me MISSING something. My password submit button on my html page will only work when the USER clicks on submit and does not work when the user just presses "Enter".

How can I change this so that the user can submit the password by pressing "Enter"?
