"error <OS 2> The system can not find the file specified: No installed service named "Apache 2".

Is that error showing up on a web page or in a popup?
check your services and MAKE sure its running, like diablo416 said. (Right click on "My Computer" and select "Manage", then find "Services and Applications", then "Services")ok... I do not see Apache under services... meaning that it is not installed. Where do I type in the code to install it? Do I type the code within the http config file?open up a cmd , or COMMAND window by TYPING
cmd.exe or command in run or startsearch
depending on ur windows version , and in the window you will see you can type stuff into it..
depending on where your apache files are located , in this example im going to use C drive and the default path

"c:\PROGRAM files\apache group\apache2\bin\apache" -k install -n "apache2"

let me know if you need any further help

Solve : Providing link buttons....need help!?

Answer»

I want to be able to post HTML text on a page so that people can copy it and put it in their website/MySpace to help ADVERTISE my SITE. I want it to be the same as this page: http://www.venganza.org/materials/buttons/

The PROBLEM i have (not sure if this is a stupid question or not) is that I can't find a way to make it so that the text i put there doesn't actually link to the image. I want it to be exactly the same, but just have no active link. OBVIOUSLY there is some sort of HTML put before and after that text, but what is it?

Your help would be MUCH appreciated.the html code for doing it:

Solve : Re: Webmasters Best Friends Drafting?

Answer»
This is the reply topic for "Webmasters Best Friends" (the draft AREA)
--Zylstra

Very nice start to an excellent and useful guide, Zylstra.
.tk domains are AVAILABLE for free. However, it includes ads on one side.
110mb will give you MySQL, and other features, for a small fee or 50 posts on their forum.
And the restriction is only on boxes 4, 5, 9 and 10.
Read more.
I recommend reading all of their features, TERMS and conditions before starting hosting with them or any free HOST as well - sometimes features you just assume they have are not available.Zylstra, what do you mean there's no such thing as a free domain name? There are several web hosting sites that offer this. Could you explain? We mustn't forget about html editors such as Notepad++ or Quanta. (depending on the os)

Also a few links to html/css/javascript/etc. reference sites are necessary.
MSDN Library - Microsoft Technical Reference for html, css, and other scripting languages
w3.org is commonly linked, although I don't think it's very helpful
webmonkey - Tons of good tutorials for html, css, javascript, php, flash, and more
Dynamic Drive - free scripts to use in your site

Also,
Apache Friends - Set up an Apache, MySQL, PHP server on your own computer (easily). Either for testing before you upload, or for your actual server.
Updated, thanks, michaewlewis, your information has been added

I'm still working out a better format, if you could recommend a better BBC code formatting, it would be wonderfulIs this post ever going to be made into a sticky?
btw, Z, what's BBC code formatting?Thanks for reminding me the topic existed (funny how things suddenly leave your mind...)

http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dcsk9jfv_43hs8cwj is a preview of the most recent version, and it contains the raw BBC code that the forum would have

Anyways, I think I am going to add some quick info, ask for approval (by anyone who is watching this topic to see if they think its all in line or not) and merge all replies off the topicRight then, everyone, go ahead and look and tell me what you all think (look above, don't use the Google docs link)

In the final version, your replies will be split into a new topic, so you wont loose your post count or your drafting ideasHTML-Kit, a free syntax-highlighting editor that I swear by. Solve : Frontpage 2002 - creating a feedback form?

Answer»

Frontpage allows me to create a feedback form CONSISTING of "check" buttons. I went for (I think) 6 general subjects & the option to check one answer from each. All good, and I remembered to assign each set with its own R number to keep it independent of the other sets.
What I now can't work out is the Submit function. How do I set this so all of the answers (there's also a general comments box) will come to me? I can't find any parameters to set and, more to the point, don't know what parameters I should be setting. In what form would the responses arrive?
I must point out I'm a complete novice with no knowledge of html language - I really do need help in layman's terms!Can you POST the HTML code you used or need to Submit?Hi
Unfortunately I haven't got that far. I've done the layout (the bit with the radio buttons and, underneath, a general cooments box). Under this I've brought in the default "Submit" button, and this is where I'm stuck.
I don't know what the next stage is. What I'm hoping will happen is visitors will click Submit and all their responses will find their way to me.
But I don't know how to set any of this up and the help file (UNLESS I'm looking in completely wrong places) doesn't seem to live up to its name, apart perhaps from the "file" bit. So the basic question is:
I've put a Submit button on my feedback page. What next?I may be wrong but I BELIEVE data submitted via a web form simply gets SAVED to your web server as a text file. You need to logon to your web server via FTP and retrieve that file. OK, well that'd be fine - I can retrieve data from the server if that's what happens. But what properties should I assign to the submit button so the data gets sent?

Solve : a tricky website tool?

Answer»

I would like to insert a feature on my website which allows users to book
dates to use company machines, scheduled times would also be handy.

This will mean having an interface which shows the days these machines are in use, and the days they are not. ( which will require writing to file ).

I NEED a big push in the right direction. The only languages I know are java &AMP; HTML.
writing to file is out of the scope of java's applet permissions. And HTML sure can't do the job.

I'd really appreciate a helping handGet a good book on PHP & MySQL. This is definetely the way you need to go for your requirements. It will involve a lot of programming and a web server that supports PHP/MySQL (most do).
Also check out www.php.net & www.phpbuilder.com for useful articles and examples of both. The forum on phpbuilder is very good also.man were you right! PHP is an awesome language, It feels like java + HTML... which somehow, JAVASCRIPT never felt like. Thanks for the input
ya php is very nice, unfortunately I haven't had the time or resources to do much with php in a year or so. As soon as I get internet at home again, I'll get more into it. I used to be a REGULAR MEMBER of the forum at www.phpbuilder.com......
Good luck with your app

Solve : Status Bar of Browser?

Answer»

Hye man i want to give the marquee effect on the status bar of the browser. But i have no idea how to perform it and what are the PROCEDURES for it or the scripts. please help me? Here's a site that will generate code for you. Frankly, I don't think this is a good idea. IE 7 and Firefox will not display these unless the user does something to tell their browser to go ahead and display it. IE 7 displays the ActiveX warning. In Firefox, I believe some setting in Tools, Options, NEEDS to be set in order for something to be displayed in the status bar.I think u don't know what i am asking help for. Sorry for that. For example you can visit the following two sites:-
http:\\www.neatadventrues.com
http:\\allnepal.comYes, I do know what you're asking about. I visited http://www.neatadventure.com/ [not http:\\www.neatadventrues.com] and I'm telling you it doesn't work in Win XP Pro SP2 with either IE 7 or Firefox 2.0.0.3, with the default settings in these BROWSERS. I did figure out how to change a setting in IE7 to allow the scrolling marquee to appear in the status bar. The setting is found in Tools, Internet Options, Security, Custom Level, and then enable "Allow status bar updates via script", under Scripting. And, in Firefox, it can be enabled via Tools, Options, Content, Advanced, and checking the box for "Change status bar text".

I ALSO visited that site with Win 98SE, IE 6, and the scrolling marquee does appear in the browser status bar with that system without me having to change any settings.

With these later versions of browsers that have this setting disabled by default, I believe many visitors to websites designed with script for displaying text/marquee in the status will simply never know about it.

By the way, did you not visit the link I provided in my PREVIOUS post? Why did you say "I think u don't know what i am asking help for"?

Solve : "Banking" System??

Answer» OKAY, I don't know a great deal about web design, but I'm creating a framed website in FrontPage, and I NEED the following...

... A numerical display in one frame (let's say it reads "10,000") that will be affected by another frame. For example, the user CLICKS a certain button, and loses 2,000 - the numerical display needs to deduct 2,000 from 10,000, OBVIOUSLY now reading 8,000. And I want the number to keep going up and down depending on which link the person clicks.

It's like a very basic game. A "banking" system if you like.

The problem is I have no idea how to do this at all... if anybody is aware of a piece or two of code that I could easily copy, paste and edit, I would be EXTREMELY grateful.

Thanks If I understand you correctly, you BASICALLY want the kind of functionality seen on this power supply calculator site: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

The answer is javascript. But, I have some doubts about this working with frames, as you mentioned. I think this is only going to work within a single web page, not frames, but I could be wrong.That's pretty much it, yeah, thanks!

I'll be taking a closer look at that.

Much appreciated.

Solve : Question about Adsense and YPN ads on my website??

Answer»

I came across a website today that used a little technique to make people click on YPN ads. It is mainly a movie clip DOWNLOAD website where people download movie clips. The owner of the website is making the visitors click on YPN ads in order to get their download links. Here is what he is doing:

1.) You go to the website and click on the movies button on the navigation menu to open a new page with a list of movies.

2.) When you click on a movie, it takes you to a new page where there are 2 links for 2 clips of the movie.

3.) When you click on one of these links, it takes you to a new page again, where it indirectly tell you to click on the YPN ads.

4.) It says you have to click on the YPN ads and click on the back button once you are in the advertiser's page and wait 10s to get a download link.

5.) You have to do this twice before he gives you a download link.

I want to know how this person is doing this. Is he using a special html code?

Somebody told me this was cheating, but I am really curious. How is this person doing this?
Most likely wouldn't work if you have Javascript and COOKIES disabled. It's INCREDIBLY USER unfriendly and your webpage will start looking like a spam PORTAL and no one will ever take it seriously.. Any body know how this person is doing this?

Here is the code he is using:

If You Visit our sponsor <BR>
Right Click >> Back

Wait 10 Seconds.

Link to the download Will Appear.

Why would you want to do this ? ?I just want to know what this is, what is he doing?can somebody, who knows html, please tell me what this person is doing?

Thanks in advanceKnowing HTML is not enough, it's javascript.

Good luck: Learn Javascriptcan you be specific, what part of javascript is he using?

Thanks in advance!Can anybody who knows javascript help me??

Solve : Thumbnails to large graphics?

Answer»

I want to BUILD a table with a set of thumbnail graphics and a larger graphic space. As each thumbnail is clicked on, the larger version comes up in the larger graphic space - to be replaced as each thumbnail is accessed. Any help would be appreciated. ThanksI made a page like this once. I ended up using a FRAME for the bigger images.
You could use javascript to change the source of the image upon clicking the thumbnail. But that would be a bit more challenging. If you're into scripting, you could give that a whirl.
I'm not into scripting unfortunately, but I have found a javascript online that might work. Translating it into acually working for me is another challenge. ThanksIf you wanted something REALLY easy, use a frame. Have your links and thumbnails in the main page and just make the links you want to open inside the frame. You could even use the frame just for the picture gallery or whatever you're making.
Here's how to implement FRAMES: http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/present/frames.htmlGood idea. I have built a few websites, but NEVER used frames. It will push me to get on and do it. Thanks for your advice.

Solve : Front Page 2002 troubles....graphics don't appear when uploaded...HTML code gone?

Answer»

I'm using Front Page 2002, and have been using it for years with no real problems.

But I recently STARTED to have a problem with graphics not showing up on the site once they are uploaded. It seems that part of the HTML code where it says which image to USE, disappears once I upload it.

It looks fine in the preview MODE. But once uploaded, and you view source, the line of code for that graphic is now gone. Below is an EXAMPLE of the HTML code.

This is the code directly from Front Page in HTML view:

[/url]

<font size="4">(1977)</font><font color="#ffff00" size="4">

</font><font size="3">Directed by Don Dohler

Now this is the code when you go to the site and view source:

<p class="MsoNormal" style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><a name="ALIEN FACTOR">[/url]
</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><font size="4">(1977)</font><font color="#ffff00" size="4">

</font><font size="3">Directed by Don Dohler

So what is causing that line of code to disappear
?I recommend you Save those pages to your Computer and then Upload it to the Server using an FTP Client like SmartFTP. Front Page maybe is not uploading the files correctly!
I also recommend you to Reinstall the Application.

But it's better to test the pages Offline and later Upload it using an FTP client directly to the Server. Just (Drag & Drop).

Solve : HTML Uploading?

Answer»

Dear Users
What is the procrdure to upload files via FTP and for example i have MADE 2 pages of my webpage and upload them on net and then i again make ANOTHER page which is linked with the previous two pages and i upload this page also on net so will it automatically GET cpnnected with the other pages and if not how to do that Hello;

If you are building websites and you need to upload them to the net you can use any Software that lets you Connect via FTP Client and then you just need to Drag & Drop the pages to your web Host.

Let say you build:

page1.html and page2.html and you want to Upload both to the Server, you need to know you ftp Server, Username and Password to get connected. Let say your domain is www.example.com.

You need to Download a Software (I Recommend SmartFTP) and set-up the Connection.

FTP: ftp.example.com
Username: yourUsername
Password: yourpass

When you get connected, go to the Folder where your pages are hosted, let say:

Maybe...

httpdocs/
htdocs/
public_html/

that depends of your Hosting Account, and when you're connected just Drag the Pages from your COMPUTER and Drop them on the Server!

You should access your pages using your domain: www.example.com/page1.html

or you can also make links to those pages from another page with the Following HTML Code:

GO TO THIS PAGE![/url]

the ../../../ is the path to the root of your Server. If you Uplaod the pages to a folder, ex: newpages/ your URL should be:

HERE![/url]

Hope this helps!

Solve : auto-detect if user is on a laptop or a cell phone?

Answer»

My problem is that I have a website that we are TRYING to get so that you can access it on your phone or on a laptop. I have no idea if this is even possible to be able to tell what type of device is accessing the page. ANYONE have an idea?check the browser. phones and pdas use DIFFERENT browsers than pcs do. It's fairly simple using javascript. Basic, non-working code:
if (browser=ie||firefox||opera||safari) open pc page
else open non-pc page

Not sure how or even why you would need to check if its a laptop. Could you give me a hint for the why?
You may be able to use vbscript, but I'm not sure if phones would SUPPORT that at all, in fact some computers wouldn't either.
Easiest solution: Ask the user.
Detecting laptops would be close to if not completely impossible since they use the exact same software desktop computers do and I honestly can't see any reason for detecting laptops either. But YES phones and pdas should be possible by checking the browser.

Instead of a POPUP I'd actually suggest if you want to do something like this that you create a frame and have the music loaded in part of the frame. However, if you want a popup of a song there are various ways this could be done. I did a quick search and the below link seems to have one of the best solutions I found.

Solve : onmouseover?

Answer»

could u please suggest how can make the color of the change just by putting the mouse over it(without CLICKING it) use the css property 'onmouseover'
Try this out:
Code: [Select]<div onmouseover="this.style.background='red'; this.style.color='blue'" onmouseout="this.style.background='black'; this.style.color='yellow'">Hello</div>
Maybe I'm overly tired, but that code doesn't make much sense to me.

Wouldn't something like...

a:hover {color: INSERT COLOR HERE}

...be a bit simpler?ya it would be much simpler. I hadn't thought of the hover property. Although it is probably a bit limited, DEPENDING on what the application is.
The method I posted would allow something with a green background to be changed to red on mouse over and then to black on mouse out. Hover would just change it back to the original color or style. And of course, you probably wouldn't want it all inline, it's just shorter and easier than creating a whole script to do it.

Well, it would be simpler if he's using CSS. But, I doubt he is and I suspect he may not be familiar with CSS. Therefore, michaewlewis suggestion may be the simpler approach in this case.Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Solve : HTML code and banner ads on my site?

Answer»

I am setting up a NEW site. I am using rv sitebuilder to build the site. I am trying to add some banner ads. I can see them when using the WYSIWYG editor but when I preview the site, I get the red x (but am redirected correctly if I click on the box). I am pasting one of the codes below:

http://www.paperbackswap.com/index.php?n=5&r_by=pkelley2021%40yahoo.com" alt="PaperBackSwap - SWAP your used paperback books with other club members.">http://www.paperbackswap.com/images/icons/weblog_icon_S1.gif" width="175" HEIGHT="50">[/url]

Am I missing something? I copied this directly from the source.

Thanks for any help anyone can give.I don't see any ISSUES with the code you posted above. You may want to try refreshing the browser (F5 key) and see if maybe it's just using an older cached copy of the page.If that doesn't work, there could be a problem somewhere else on your page. Do you have an example page we can LOOK at?

Solve : Best viewed with Firefox?

Answer»

Hello all.
As some of you may know, I have recently got my own site up and running.
It works great in FIREFOX, not so well in IE (it still works, but a little out of alignment).
How do I add a sidebar or SOMETHING that says something like "this page best viewed with Firefox 2" and a link to download it?
I only want it to COME up when the user is browsing the site with IE.
I was looked at explorerdestroyer.com which seemed to have a good idea.
However, it has been criticized for its methods, and the site is down, as is its affiliate, killbillsbrowser.com.
Besides, those links included the GOOGLE toolbar, which I don't want.
How do I do this?
I did search Google but I couldn't find anything relevant.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer, and any more info needed can be provided.
Calum.Let me say that I found what I needed.
I used conditional expressions to show a big Firefox logo, and "best viewed with FF2".
It needs it, IE hates my site.You can do the same thing to load a whole different display for IE. Which is exactly what I'm trying to do right now. I've got a CSS for Firefox, and one for IE6. But of course, it doesn't want to work for me...You can indeed.
But I was satisfied with the logo and a message.

Solve : Self Hosting?

Answer»

OK it sound quite easy. I installed the IIS drivers for Windows XP and I got something to happen now when I type http://localhost into the Run Tool it pops up with a box to inter a user NAME and password but I don't know what it is also I would think that if someone logs on to my site they would get the same thing so how do i disable this security window? I've only DONE a little with IIS, so this may not be the best help (I use Apache and/or xampp), but I think you have to define a website in the IIS management console that users can access without user info.
Be sure to check out the help files and microsoft.com for proper set up for IIS.
I run 2 servers locally for testing and messing around (not exposed to the internet). IIS and Apache.

I use IIS a lot more because JScript is my preferred choice of scripting language. I wish it wasn't.

From a half-amateur perspective, the official IIS documentation is RATHER opaque, and IIS adminstration is a maze of buttons and dialog boxes.

Apache documentation is good, and is supplemented by nice people all over. The config files are all plaintext. It's easy to try a little copy-paste-amend, and to learn from example.

If you have no preferred scripting environment, I'd strongly recommend setting IIS startup to "manual", and downloading Apache+PHP.

..but then maybe you like buttons and dialog boxes !

Oh ! So that's why none of my web apps ever work !

or...

You couldn't be more wrong, Sir. JScript is a scripting language, and is essentially identical to Javascript (Code branching in client-side scripts is very, very rarely due to core language differences). Neither language is solely found in client side applications.

The most common non-browser uses for JScript are server-scripting within ASP, and sort-of shell scripting for PCs in WSH (Windows Scripting Host).

If you are running Windows, perhaps you should try this:

WScript.Echo("Hello");

Save as a .js file; and double click.You have sparked my interest. I didn't know jscript could be a server-side language. The snippet you supplied doesn't really explain much though. It's still executed on the client side.
I'm aware of the differences between jscript and javascript. From my perspective, Microsoft just wanted their own web scripting interpreter so they added a few features and called it their own.
I do have a question about it though. Why would you want to use jscript as a server side language when you're using asp? Doesn't asp do everything and more that jscript could do? The only thing asp doesn't do would be client-side stuff, right?
Quote

Windows considers .js files as executeable. It executes on your PC, within WSH. One might consider that to be "client-side", but since there's no webserver involved...

Quote

Kind of. Javascript is standardised as ECMAScript. JScript is just an implementation of it (as is Flash's ActionScript). Both J's extend ECMAScript a little, and many of these extensions are common to both. There are a handful of JScript extensions that are required for useful OPERATION in Microsoft hosts, and sharing data with VBScript.

ASP can't do anything by itself. It is a host, not a language.

ASP comes with VBScript and JScript support. Support for other languages can be added. There are 3rd party modules available for PHPScript, PerlScript etc. In classic ASP, it is possible to run more than one language on the same page.

Solve : too much space on top of frame!!?

Answer»

I'm trying to use frames to have a stable link section on the BOTTOM of my website. Problem being, the lower frame section has too much space above the links. It's making hard for me to make the link section look right. I've tried to take out any extra alignment, spaces... but there still seems to be some kind of automatic buffer on the top of the page. What is that?? How do i get rid of it?

Please help!

thanks muchly,
--jA few things that might help...

A link to the page in question.
A copy of the troublesome code.
What browser are you viewing the page in?
Are you using a program to write the code or are you doing it by hand?Here's the code I was using for the page referenced by the bottom frame...

[/url][/url][/url][/url][/url][/url][/url]http://75.126.58.224/player.swf?myid=1434555&rand=1&f=1" menu="false" quality="best" scale="noscale" bgcolor="#ffffff" wmode="transparent" width="218" height="155" name="MyFlashFetish.com" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" />http://www.freeflashslideshow.com" target="_blank">

Does that help to jolt any ideas??

thanks!
--jI'm not seeing any problems with that frame. There's some space above the links, but not much. Maybe a centimeter or two. Unless that's too much for you...

Are you only using HTML to DESIGN this site? I would suggest learning a bit of CSS which would make your site quite a bit easier to design. I tried using CSS with this frame and TOOK seconds to perfectly align the top of the frame with the top of the page (making it flush, with no space).

Until you famliarize yourself with CSS (if you choose to do so), I can give you this quick fix...

Code: [Select]<STYLE TYPE="text/css">
body {margin-top: -2px}
</STYLE>

Just place that after your code, but before your codes. The -2 makes everything move up by two pixels. Change this to whatever you WISH. Using a positive number will make it all move down.

Solve : Importing CSS?

Answer»

Alright, I think I've just about gotten to the point where I can't figure this one out for myself...

Basically, I have two different sylesheets: styles.css and styles2.css. The first one was designed for Firefox and the second one was designed for IE6. styles.css is the default and I want to be able to import styles2.css for people who are viewing with IE6 (which would cause it to load a different template for them). I don't want to import certain browser-specific elements, but a whole new stylesheet. How in the world do I go about doing this?

I've searched on Google and am referencing Andy Budd's CSS Mastery, but I can't get anything to work.The first thing that popped into my mind as reading your question would be to use JavaScript for this, I did a quick search thinking of javascript and css in mind and came up with this RESULT which looks like it should work for you.

http://rafael.adm.br/css_browser_selector/

Thanks, Nathan, I'll give it a try tonight.I've got everything all sorted out now. I was also having trouble GETTING the javascript to work, but it led to me finding out what my problem was. I don't know why it never OCCURED to me, but I didn't realize that I had to redefine the different parameters. I was simply omitting the selectors I didn't want because I thought the second CSS would be displayed instead of the first, not simply displayed over it. This is why I couldn't even get the STAR HTML hack to work. I have now got the CSS import working according to plan and I'm a LOT less frustrated.Good to hear.

Solve : how do I transfer user to new web page without a link using cgi?

Answer»

I have a beginning web page with a user and PASSWORD form. If the
user presses the login button the page is transfered to my cgi script
to check the user name and password against a database USING xml messages.

If the password and user are a match I want to dynamically create
HTML CODE that will load a differant Web page without the user
having to PUSH any additional buttons or click on a link. Can this
be done on the client side or do I do I have to do it on the server
side? On the client side what HTML TAGS would I have to use?

Solve : PHP question?

Answer» HEY, it's been a while since I've been here. I've been very busy.

I'm trying to finish off a site that has been using hybrid HTML and PHP, and I have one final problem.

I need to set up a list of links that a user can click to download the correct file. Here's the code I've been trying out, but I know fopen() is WRONG since it tries to instantly open the file instead of waiting for a click.

Code: [Select]<?php
$link='../../pr0t3ct3d/math/';
$link1=$link.'stats1.jpg';
$text1='Chapter13-1';
$link2=$link.'stats20-22.doc';
$text2='Graphing-Chi-Square/LinearRegression';
if($_SESSION['login']==1)
{
echo"<fontsize=\"+2\">Statistics</font><br/>";
fopen('$link1','r');
echo"<br/>";
fopen('$link2','r');
}
else
{
echo"LoginCredentialsincorrect.Pleasetryagain.";
}
?>

Does anyone know the correct command to use so that I can include my own link titles ($text1, $text2) and link to those different links ($link1, $link2).

FINALLY, I think the link is incorrect since fopen() is STILL returning errors about not being able to FIND the documents. /pr0t3ct3d/ is on the lowest possible level, how do I get to it correctly?ask http://phpbuilder.com/board/
they have tons of knowledgeable users that can help more with php/mysql stuff

Solve : new to JavaScript, I can't get this to work?

Answer»

I'm learning JavaScript (with the aid of online tutorials) and can't figure out where I messed up. This is what I have and where the problem seems to be:

<script type="text/javascript">
var apples = 10;
alert('There are currently ' + apples + ' apples!');

var toss = prompt('How many apples would you like to throw at the doctor?', '0');

var thrown = parseInt(toss);
if(thrown > apples){
alert('Sorry, but there are not that many apples. You can not throw ' + thrown + ' apples!');
} else { if(apples - thrown = 1){
alert('Now there is only one APPLE LEFT to throw!');
} else {apples -= thrown;
alert('Now there are only ' + apples + ' apple(s) left to throw!');
}
}
</script>

Is there some weird rule about having if/else statements within other if/else statements? Or did I mess up in my ignorance elsewhere?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.you're missing an EQUALS when checking if there's only one apple left
change to this: if(apples-thrown==1)Thanks a million. I had no clue I had to use a double =, that'll be QUITE helpful not only with this script but with many others in the future. Thank you again.

First of all we need to know what you are trying to protect. Is it a program, a picture, a design?Don't tell anyone...Quote from: patio on May 06, 2007, 07:42:13 AM

Don't tell anyone...
Like if it is a picture or a document or program, just keep it to yourself and dont tell anyone about it Get a patent.I'm not claiming professional legal representation (which you should get). But as MENTIONED above if the idea is an actual product or idea you would want to register for a patent. You would not need to wait for it to approve, but after registered you can then market the idea. If someone liked the idea and wanted to purchase it from you they would purchase the patent and rights from you.Capitalist.

I'm new to HTML. I can't get emphasized text to align, and it's really annoying me. I tried:

Code: [Select]&LT;em style="text-align: center;">blah blah</em>

Any suggestions would be greatly APPRECIATED. Place the text in a div instead.

Solve : Handheld devices.?

Answer»

I need to design my site to be viewable with HANDHELD devices, which is just fine and dandy. Coding the CSS is the easy part. HOWEVER, I don't have a proper way of previewing my work. The best way, of course, would be to try accessing my site with a cell phone, but my phone isn't hooked up to the internet. I could ask a FRIEND to try it, but that wouldn't be very convenient.

Is there a decent emulator out there that can kinda give me an idea of how my site will look on a phone? I was told that Opera has an emulator, but I see no such feature, unless there's an add-on I have to download. I know the Web Developer Toolbar for Firefox will display the handheld media, but it gives me no idea of how it would look on an actual device.

I've found a few emulators, but they all use the standard CSS and not the specified handheld CSS. I'll keep looking, but a point in the right direction would be appreciated.For anyone who might be interested, I managed to find Openwave Phone Simulator. It's a nifty little phone-simulation browser. Certainly not the best out there, I'm sure, but it works. And it's a nice small download (unlike the BlackBerry simulator) for those of us on dial-up. I'm still open to suggestions, but consider this resolved.What are you building, MATT?

For setting browser resolution/sizeI use this; http://setmy.browsersize.comI'm not sure how well that would work for simulating handheld media, but I can still see that coming in handy. It's now bookmarked.

I've been working on a site for a FAKE rap group. Well, I guess it's technically a real group, it's just grossly overexaggerated. The group existed for maybe a week and produced a couple of songs. The site pretends that they've produced full-length albums and have a healthy fanbase and have the ability to raise the dead. As it stands right now, it's basically a practice site for honing my "skills".

Solve : validate problem?

Answer»

Hello

Please help with explaining this problem: and possibly how to solve it thanks.

No CHARACTER Encoding Found! FALLING back to UTF-8.

I was not able to extract a character encoding labeling from any of the valid sources for such information.

Without encoding information it is IMPOSSIBLE to reliably validate the document.

I'm falling back to the "UTF-8" encoding and will attempt to perform the validation,

but this is likely to fail for all non-trivial documents.

Read the FAQ entry on character encoding for more details and pointers on how to fix this problem with your document.

Sorry! This document can not be checked.

Solve : !!---how to make a pop up window---!!?

Answer»

ok now, i have some MUSIC i want to play on the site. but if i just put it on the site the music has to reload every time you click on a link, and it starts from the beginin of the song. i want a pop-up window to pop up and play the music and because its in a diffrent window the music wont reload. but i dont want to have to click on a link atomaticly, i want a pop up window that pops up atomaticlly. Code: [Select]<body onload=javascript:window.open(newpage.html, null, height=200,width=400,status=yes,toolbar=no,menubar=no,location=no)You should KNOW that this won't work with most browsers because most PEOPLE have popup blockers turned on.
Another option is to CHANGE the onload to onclick, that way if the user clicks anything on the page, the window will pop up.
That's how you can do it. But personally, I wouldn't recommend adding background music to your site because I find background music very annoying. A lot of times I'm already listening to my own music and I don't want something trying to overpower it. When that happens, I commonly close that website and remember not to go to it again.
well IM not advertising it or anything so ill take it, its a socom clan website soo i dont know ill ask them if they like it

Solve : HTACCESS Password Protection Problems?

Answer»

EDIT: Just bumped the topic... added another question on the bottom

I am running my families website, and there was a problem.
Protecting data from outsiders.

To START off, we used HTACCESS protection, but, due to the nature of the sites setup, there are various directories.

A brief layout of the file formats:

/familydir/
/PHOTOS/
/forum/
/newscontent/

(They are not the real directories, but close enough)
All of those directories are protected by HTACCESS. When you enter the website, you are asked to log in. The log in occurs when you attempt to access the /familydir/ directory. (that’s the first log in)

Once you are there, index.htm is loaded (automatically by Apache) and you are given links to other parts of the site. (eg: forum, photos, newscontent)
This is where the problem occurs. The web applications that are run on those different directories must have their own HTACCESS protection, prompting various times for passwords.

If you were to browse the entire website, you would have to enter your username and password more than once.

This needs to be fixed.
Is there any way to make one main HTACCESS protection that covers all of the site except for index.htm ?
Actually there may be a better way.

Essentially you are describing a Content Management System, which you are currently managing the hard way (i.e. manually). Why not simply use a real CMS? Joomla is good: http://www.joomla.org/

If you don't like the look of it, do say, and we can have another think about how to do things.I have used Joomla before, but I didnt like how it worked.
(that, and, we need to create a website with only two master accounts)

Is there any other way?
You see, we want a website for sharing information, and yes, Joomla fits, but it is a bit of a piece of equiptment to manage and start up.

I will go and try it again anyways

If there are any other ways, please do tell

(most of the main site, the parts that are not web apps, at .html files.... )Now I remember

The last time I used Joomla, it had an error, and I was unable to properly manage the content. It was terrible, at least it was just a test run.

EDIT: I did go ahead and try it again, and its just not what it needs to be.
(that and I need to get around to sending around 60 mail messages) Ok, I guess my question is this:

Can I make my HTACCESS file cover various directories instead of protecting individual directories with various HTACCESS files? Sorry if I'm not understanding this right, but can't you just protect the whole site by inserting something like this into the httpd.conf file? Without using .htaccess?

AuthType Basic
AuthName "SERVER"
AuthUserFile "y:\http server\password.txt" (Wrong Path)
Require valid-user

Within the and sections.

I use this for my site, and I only have to type in my password once. Provided I don't delete my cookies.That would sort of work, but there is one thing:

We need to keep one page open to the public (the welcome page)So... any ideas?Sorry - any posts that require a bit more thought are at the back of the queue for me at the moment. I will get to it!Ok
Thanks Rob

If there are alternatives to HTACCESS besides using a content system (since I really have never gotten along with them) feel free to suggest

ALSO, I think I am going to password protect the entire website. But there is one directory that I need to keep cleared.
An Example:
Our photo sharing program
/photos/
has a greeting card system
The problem is, when password protection is on, and you SEND a greeting card, and try to read it, you cant
The picture in the email is password protected
If you dont know the password, your browser crashes!
There are multiple CMS solutions out there. You mentioned Joomla, how about Wordpress, DRAGONFLY, PHPNuke, the list goes on and on. Also you can work with some pre made login systems like this one here to protect your content.I have used Wordpress, PostNuke, PHPNuke, and SOOOO many others. None fit.

I will check out that last link, thanks

Ok, this is what my HTACCESS file looks like right now

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://www.mysite.com/.*$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://www.mysite.com$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://mysite.com/.*$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://mysite.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule .*\.(jpg|jpeg|gif|png|bmp)$ - [F,NC]

(Thats the one that is under my WWW directory)

If I wanted to protect my entire site, what would I change it to?

Solve : FTP help?

Answer»

I need to know what the LOCAL directory and the REMOTE directory would be.
I contacted Earthlink; however, the guy was real dumb and wasn't any HELP.
We spent a half of an hour on the CHAT and still could not get the problem solved. I guess Earthlink must be hard pressed for representatives.

Thanks

You will probably have to search a bit for what you are looking for but you might find it.
Hope this helps:)I gather you want to use FTP to upload web pages to the free web space that's part of your benefits as an Earthlink user. Is that right? You probably know you can develop pages online using the Trellix tool available to Earthlink users. But, I can understand you wanting to use FTP. It gives you the flexibility to develop pages your way instead of using Trellix. I think you'll find what you need to know here: http://www.earthlink.net/elink/issue23/tech_archive.html.

Let me know if you have further questions. Earthlink is my ISP and I've used FTP to upload HTML files to my web space.

Solve : 1 million visitors in a month garunteed!?

Answer»

This is a great program that I tried and it WORKED! I got 1 MILLION visitors to my website every month!! Just try it and you'll see! Sorry if this seems like spam but it's not. It actually is a great program that works and it's FREE!!!

This is not spam! Trust me it works so well!!yeees... not spam.... would you please tell me how to change my IP without accessing any system options or using my own computer?
then i'll believe you.

EDIT: sorry if this seems like sarcasm, it's actually a great psychology method that works, and it's free!QUOTE

"This Free system is like *censored* for your website!"
Dude. No. Wrong.lol... just... lol...The site is tacky and hard to read, full of spelling mistakes.
The technique used is annoying to say the least, I would think having an ad on someone ELSE's site (probably a big flashing popup) would persuade people to steer CLEAR of your site.
Spam link removed from post and topic locked - don't do that again.User permanently banned.Well done, Admin!

Solve : E-Mail Hosting?

Answer»

We are a small business, and we just got our own domain.

Here the problem.
We have an E-Mail Wine Club, and we have maybe 1,000 members who signed up in our stores. We send e-mails maybe 2-3 times a month to our members. But our e-mail service provider (we currently do not host our own e-mail address but we would like to) only let us send to 100 people an hour and only 500 or so in a day. So it takes like 2 days to send one e-mail out to our club members.

We don't send PICS, or html just text. We just want to be able to send it out in one day to our whole list. I've been looking around at bulk e-mail software. But if we have our own domain couldn't there be a simpler more cost effective way without spending a bunch of money on software.

Any suggestions?

Thank YouGive MERCURY Mail a try. http://www.pmail.com/
It runs in windows, has imap, pop3, & smtp, easy to understand gui, etc.
I was just trying to get on their site, but couldn't, so if you can't either, you can DOWNLOAD xampp from http://www.apachefriends.org. Xampp has mercury mail bundled with it (Windows version only).
Do you have a website for your registered domain name? Are you doing EMAIL through your web hosting service? If not, have you looked into that? In other words, is your "e-mail service provider" your web hosting service or some separate email service?We have the domain, but as far as I know no website has been uploaded yet.

So we have sbc global yahoo mail at the moment, and it sucks.

Do we have to have to website set up to use the bandwidtch, etc..?If you're going to be publishing a website, since you have registered a domain name, you might go ahead and open account with a hosting service such as http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/ - one I'm familiar with - and run your email through them. This would allow you to use a email address based on the domain name, such [emailprotected]

Or, you might subscribe to an email such as that available from domain registrar, godaddy.com. They offer an Express Email Marketing service which might be just the right THING for you. thank you so much for all your input.
It has been very helpful to us!

Solve : Style Sheet Link Trouble?

Answer»

I'm having trouble with my style sheet on my website, iceglob.110mb.com. At first view the main page (linked to a style sheet) works fine, but when I click on "LINKS" (which is also also linked to the style sheet), all the formatting on the sytle sheet disappears ! I stays gone even when I go back to the main page. Only when I click Refresh does the formatting appear again. I cannot figure this out. Does anyone know what the problem is? (I'm running XP with IE7).I'd love to help, but my ISP is currently being blocked by 110mb...

If you can supply me with the code from the home page and the page in question...I'll take a look at it and see if there is any advice I may be able to offer.Works fine for me with IE7 and FF2.
As Saviour said, a copy of your code would help.
Oh, IE7 looks a little different from FF2, but that's because IE sucks.
(Personal opinion)Works fine for me on IE6. Perhaps you just need to clear out your TEMPORARY INTERNET Files.Okay I am attaching the .css file and the two .html files that link to each other (one is /index.html and one is /links/index.html).

EDIT: It's didn't let me attach .css or .html files, so I ziped them. One file contains index.css and index.html, and the other contains index.html for the links directory on my website.

[cleaning up - attachment deleted by admin]Even though I can't get to your SITE, I have checked the code...and checked it with Dreamweaver for errors...none found.

The preview works fine for both page codes.

Maybe you should clear your temporary internet files like CBMatt recommended.Quote from: The Saviour on June 05, 2007, 07:29:52 PM

Maybe you should clear your temporary internet files like CBMatt recommended.

I'm just worried that it might happen on other people's computers too, and I don't want my site to look ugly.

Actually, I asked a friend to go to my website and she said it did the same thing on her comp. But...did clearing the temporary files fix it on your end?

You've had two users here say the pages display fine. I have Comcast and 110mb seems to be blocking us from seeing any of their pages.

So...did you clear your cache and then look at the pages again?Quote from: CompGuy17 on June 05, 2007, 07:41:56 PM

Did your friend view your site before you made these changes? Sometimes, people's browsers just don't want to load a site properly because of their TIF. Happens to me all the time with PhotoBucket.Why do you have two index.html files?
How about calling one index.html and the other links.html?
And just ty clearing your temp. files, if it helps than that's the issue.Quote from: Calum on June 06, 2007, 02:37:48 AM

I have two index.html files because one is under the /links/ directory. There are going to be multiple pages under that directory, so I do not want just a links.html page.

Okay I just cleaned my temp IE files, and I still have the same problem. For some reason the browser is not catching the link to the style sheet. Then try PUTTING your stylesheet in the links directory as well and then change the path on your links page relative to the new location of the additional stylesheet.Quote from: The Saviour on June 06, 2007, 01:23:59 PM

Then rename the main links page to links_main.html instead of index.html. Subsequent link pages you'll name accordingly.Quote from: The Saviour on June 06, 2007, 03:05:33 PM

Sure it would. It would mask the ad. Might have to tweak the POSITIONING and size.
What's OP? That acronym is new to me.

It's possible, yes. But LIKE RAPTOR said, the CODE is a mess. This is a very crude method that may compromise the integrity of the whole page.

Solve : HTML Background Picture Nontiled?

How do I make it so that a background picture is stretched to FILL the entire page, not tiled?Quote from: guyguy on May 18, 2007, 08:01:00 AM

How do I make it so that a background picture is stretched to fill the entire page, not tiled?

CSS BackgroundDepending on your background picture, that could make a distorted image, don't you AGREE? What's the problem with TILING it? If you don't want to tile, perhaps you should start with a larger image, one that fills the background without being tiled.You ALSO have to consider the different resolutions that viewers might be using. Something that might look good on an 800x600 screen might look like a big blur on my own.

Solve : FrontPage - Text not appearing on .GIF pictures in browser?

Answer»

Hi guys,

I hope you can help.

I'm designing a SharePoint site on FrontPage 2003 and am using .gif clip art files as banner backgrounds by simply adding text to the pictures. As far as I know I'm adding the text CORRECTLY by using the 'Text' OPTION of the picture toolbar. Unfortunatley though, although the text appears when I go to the preview tab on FrontPage, it doesn't appear when I go to view the page through my browser (IE6).

I'm a bit lost so any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks very much indeed.

Dan.Did you save the change in FrontPage before viewing it in IE? Also, try refreshing the page in IE after making a change in FrontPage and saving it.Hi,

Thanks Soy bean. I've tryed that but no joy I'm afraid.
Other changes made in FrontPage do appear on the page when displayed in the browser? Is that RIGHT? If you open an image - one of those .gif clip art files that you've added text to - in an image/photo editor, do you see the text? If you have no photo editing software, just use Microsoft Paint, which comes with all Windows systems. Hi Soybean,

Yeah that's right. Any other changes I make appear in the browser no problem. I tryed pasting the image into paint and (interestingly?) the text didn't appear with the image.

To be honest I THINK I'm going to have to drop the banner thing now as I need to get the site up and now that I've played around with it a bit it doesn't look too bad WITHOUT it.

Thanks very much indeed for all your help mate, I really appreciate it.

All the best with whatever you do

Solve : Question on PHP?

Answer»

For my summer internship i was asked to find out what the FOLLOWING lines of code in php will do:
$var="hello";
$$var="world";
ECHO $hello;
$var();

ANYONE KNOW?Do some studying at http://www.w3schools.com/php/default.asp. why not try it out for yourself?well i believe that the first one inputs the string hello into the variable $var, and the third statement prints or outputs the variable $hello which has no value cause it hasnt been given one yet. I've NEVER seen a double $ sign and I dont exactly understand what is going on with the $var();Have you tested the code snippet yet? Sometimes that is the best way to learn.

Solve : A very interesting problem?

Answer»

Greetings Everyone,
I am new around here and I am in need of your advise.

I am trying to create a web page that updates weather information every time it is refreshed. The data is found at ftp://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/data/observations/metar/decoded/KBOW.TXT it is the current weather report in a standard aviation format.

The link produces this output

Bartow Municipal, FL, United States (KBOW) 27-57N 081-47W
Jun 02, 2007 - 04:50 PM EDT / 2007.06.02 2050 UTC
Wind: from the WSW (240 degrees) at 29 MPH (25 KT) gusting to 39 MPH (34 KT):0
Visibility: 15 mile(s):0
Sky conditions: overcast
Temperature: 78 F (26 C)
Dew Point: 66 F (19 C)
Relative Humidity: 65%
Pressure (altimeter): 29.64 in. Hg (1003 hPa)
ob: KBOW 022050Z 24025G34KT 15SM OVC027 26/19 A2964 LAST
cycle: 21

The data is refreshed every hour but I will be darned if I can get it to refresh automatically on my page.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks in advanceClick hereThanks for your input CompGuy17, I have used that script on a different project.
I may not have explained my need clearly enough, so let me try again.

I know where to get the data from and I can cut and paste into my page but I can not get it do so automatically on refresh. The graphics update correctly using this piece of CODE

http://adds.aviationweather.noaa.gov/data/progs/hpc_24_fcst.gif" width="640" HEIGHT="480">[/url]

Is there a similar script to gather a text file from a ftp server and display the contents?Ltapilot...

Depending on how savvy you are, when it comes to using dynamic content on your site, you might want to take a read:

http://minitutorials.com/webdesign/php/dynamic_content.php

The information provided at the above link is actually what (I think) you are trying to do.Save...
Thanks for the link. Yes it is very close to what I am trying to do. Now I am wondering if my hosting ISP has PHP services ACTIVATED. There robot sent a very nice note telling me that I would have an answer in the next 24 hours. Once it is turned on, I bet I am good to go. If not back to learning new stuff. (Guess we never stop doing that but I had hoped to work on other things.)
Thanks GuysYou're welcome...

It'd be nice to know how it turns out, so post back and let us know...okay?Hello everyone,
Here is the code I CAME up with to SOLVE this problem.

It makes a frame, then populated that frame with data from the ftp site. Not very elegant but efficient.

Thanks for all of your help and time
