Solve : Firefox vs. Internet Explorer code issue? |
|
Answer» Hey, I'm writing a little site and everything is working nicely, except for one problem. The problem is that you designed it in IE. Actually, I design with Firefox as my primary target browser. Quote from: CBMatt on June 20, 2007, 01:21:21 PM IE doesn't handle HTML/CSS properly. ...which is WHY I design primarily with Firefox. :-) I only checked it in IE because it wasn't working in fx and I was frustrated. Quote from: michaewlewis on June 20, 2007, 10:35:09 AM Try stretching the png vertically... The .png is the only file in that part of the , and it's set as the background. No amount of image resizing would help that. Quote from: michaewlewis on June 20, 2007, 10:35:09 AM Could you make the whole thing the background and put the main content in an iframe? I think that would look alright, although some other members would disagree. Yeah, see, I want to be able to stretch the main content as much as I want to, which is why I've got it all cut up into different pieces. [edit: plus I HATTTEEEE frames] Quote from: michaewlewis on June 20, 2007, 02:35:22 PM You could create a javscript to differentiate between ie browsers and others. Make ie use the code that is currently working for it, and then figure out something else for firefox. Ahahahahahaha... ...ahem... That's a lot of work that I'm not PARTICULARLY inclined to tackle. I'm more inclined to find code that is cross-browser compatible. MUCH easier...and it makes you look cool. You're all like, "Man, look at my awesome site...it doesn't matter WHAT browser you look at it in, it works!" And then all the ladies LOVE you. -rockerestAlas, my issue was a simple one. However, the root of said problem is still unknown. Both the background image and the flash buttons in the in question were 42 pixels tall. Despite that fact, the was more than 42 pixels tall (accounting for the whitespace). All it took was telling the to be ONLY 42 pixels tall and...vwala!...the whitespace disappeared! Thanks for all the ideas -rockerest ps CBMatt: I've been using the firefox developer bar QUITE regularly for about a year now, but find it to be somewhat disorganized. Very good if you know where the tool is you're looking for, though. What are your thoughts?Sorry, didn't realize you were designing it in Firefox. I guess that totally blew my SUGGESTION out the window. Ha. In any case, I'm glad you've got it working. Now it looks better in Firefox (as long as NoScript is set to allow it) than IE, just as it should. As for the toolbar...it has a lot of features, and I agree that it can be easy to get lost in everything. You just have to try to familiarize yourself with the features you use most so it kinda becomes second nature. I only use a select handful of the features, so it's not too hard for me to remember where everything is. It'd be nice if you could customize it a bit more and hide the features you don't need. I suppose you could always get the source code and mess around with a bit. Heh. |

So FAR i have document.childNodes which just GIVES me an array with the HTML root element in it. Solve : HTML automatic scrolling? |
|
Answer» I have an HTML website, but some of the pages are built on a free web hosting SERVICE - Tripod - so that each page has about 2 inches of hideous ads at the top. Is there any code that can have the page automatically scroll down a couple inches every time that page is OPENED - something not involving an anchor but which just automatically would scroll past the ads?Not that I know of (of course, I'm not an HTML expert). I don't think you can do that. Besides, you really shouldn't be doing it. Ads are to be expected with free hosting. After all, how else can you expect it to be free? Soybean, there are no strings attached. 110mb gets its money from donations. Ask Calum. He uses it too. Besides, most of the Linux OSs are free. Where do they get their money from?redbuck, you would find it hard or impossible to remove or hide the ads, and you shouldn't try anyway as they are supported by ads. As CompGuy17 said, I do use 110mb, and there are no catches. They are supported/owned/run by 2 companies, and also cover costs with donations. It's free, reliable, ad-free hosting, no strings attached. I highly rwcommend it. And no, I'm not employed by them.Like EVERYONE else, I don't believe what you want can be done. There are other methods, of course, but if Tripod finds out about you hiding ads, they will remove your site. You can use the javascript funtion "window.scroll" to scroll down. check out dynamic drive for an example. http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex8/topscroll.htm Quote from: Calum on June 04, 2007, 02:40:07 AM As CompGuy17 said, I do use 110mb, and there are no catches.Calum, where's the button to make donations? I can't find it.You could also put a redirect script in the code. Have it redirect to "index.html#go_down" after 1 second. But you'll probably get your site shut down. So don't do it. Do the smart thing and get a real site. Their not expensive and you're not limited by ads.Quote from: soybean on June 04, 2007, 08:03:55 PM Quote from: Calum on June 04, 2007, 02:40:07 AMAs CompGuy17 said, I do use 110mb, and there are no catches.Calum, where's the button to make donations? I can't find it. It is in the area where you can edit your website. You have to be signed up to see it. After all, it's not like non-users are going to donate. Quote from: CompGuy17 on June 04, 2007, 08:58:53 PM Quote from: soybean on June 04, 2007, 08:03:55 PMTrue, it is only for members.Quote from: Calum on June 04, 2007, 02:40:07 AMAs CompGuy17 said, I do use 110mb, and there are no catches.Calum, where's the button to make donations? I can't find it. Although a big "donate" button on the main page might be better.Quote from: Calum on June 05, 2007, 04:14:59 AM Quote from: CompGuy17 on June 04, 2007, 08:58:53 PMQuote from: soybean on June 04, 2007, 08:03:55 PMTrue, it is only for members.Quote from: Calum on June 04, 2007, 02:40:07 AMAs CompGuy17 said, I do use 110mb, and there are no catches.Calum, where's the button to make donations? Answer» Hi, I am new to the forums and I would LIKE to make webpages for fun I guess, and I would like to know if anyone has a suggestion about any free HTML editor(s), because there is to much code in notepad for me to work with.I use Notepad++. It's a really cool LITTLE tool.Quote from: Chilly on June 01, 2007, 02:30:30 PM Hi, I am new to the forums and I would like to make webpages for fun I guess, and I would like to know if anyone has a suggestion about any free HTML editor(s), because there is to much code in notepad for me to work with. Check out: http://www.nvu.com/index.php NVU is free. You might like to also see: http://www.nvu.com/websitehelp.php as there are links on that page to tutorials, etc. I hope some others comment on NVU here. I'm new at this too. Similar to yourself, I'm just playing around. So I'm not an experienced person to answer your question. I too would like to know if I've found a good tool for a beginner/learner. So far, I've had fun with it ( I just don't know if there is something easier/better out there for us ). Doing something simple with HTML isn't too difficult. The key word here is "simple". I'm stumbling and fumbling with CSS though. I'm partial to HTML-Kit. It's simple, but I like it.I've spent a little time with Nvu and I think it's a good tool for creating web pages. The other two programs mentioned also look good. Which is best? I don't know. And, these are not the only ones. Download.com has 222 programs in their HTML editors category. Quote from: soybean on June 02, 2007, 12:49:12 PM I've spent a little time with Nvu and I think it's a good tool for creating web pages. Thanks for commenting. That's telling me that it is not a waste of time. Quote Download.com has 222 programs in their HTML editors category. Somewhere I read a definition, and it seemed to differentiate between HTML editors and What You See Is What You Get editors. Apparently NVU is a WYSIWYG editor. I don't know if this is a Good Thing or a Bad Thing. Just wanted to mention it for anyone reading along. Quote from: WillyW on June 02, 2007, 01:39:11 PM I don't know if this is a Good Thing or a Bad Thing. Just wanted to mention it for anyone reading along. It's all just a matter of opinion. I personally don't like WYSIWYG, but it works for some people.Quote from: CBMatt on June 02, 2007, 02:20:49 PM I personally don't like WYSIWYG, but it works for some people. Me either. But I do get stuck sometimes CODING it all myself.See, coding it myself is how I started and how I first learned how to do anything, so it's always been my preferred method.Quote from: CBMatt on June 02, 2007, 04:55:37 PM See, coding it myself is how I started and how I first learned how to do anything, so it's always been my preferred method. Yes, it's how I started too, and how I've been doing it all so far. And I do perfer that method over WYSIWYG. But I have having a little trouble now, so I'm trying the other method to get back on track.I like a bit of both. I use DreeamWeaver myself, and I use both WYSIWYG and the code views to achieve what I want. I wouldn't feel comfortable just coding or just WYSIWYG editing. BTW, I have used Nvu, but some people have said that it can be hard to learn and doesn't always produce the best results, or the results you want. There is a mod of Nvu somewhere, which is the same but with some bugs fixed. Thanks for your help guys I'll give it a try on the programs you guys suggested, Thanks! Quote from: Calum on June 03, 2007, 06:11:57 AM I like a bit of both. Bear with me, this is new territory for me. NVU has four modes. Normal, HTML tags, source, and preview. I think - when you say "code views" - that you are referring to either the HTML tags view or source view. Or is it both? I think I understand what you fellows are saying, because I've found myself a few times flipping back and forth among the different views - sometimes one is better for whatever reason. I found an extension too. Lauchy. http://gemal.dk/mozilla/launchy.html I like it. Can also be installed in Thunderbird and Firefox. Quote BTW, I have used Nvu, but some people have said that it can be hard to learn oh? I'd like to hear more, if you can remember it. And how about your personal experience with it? ... was NVU at least ok, if not top notch? Quote and doesn't always produce the best results, or the results you want. If you happen across a link for that, please post. About Dreamweaver: Isn't that an expensive commercial product only? Quote from: Chilly on June 03, 2007, 10:53:24 AM Thanks for your help guys I'll give it a try on the programs you guys suggested, Thanks! Excellent. Come back and SHARE with us whatever you discover. Quote NVU has four modes. Normal, HTML tags, source, and preview. Both, I believe. Dreamweaver has 3 views - code, split and design. Code is similar to Nvu's source view, split is source and design. And Nvu's HTML tags view is very different, pretty useful though. Quote I found an extension too. Launchy.Very useful. I may install that, if I feel I need it in the future. Quote oh? I'd like to hear more, if you can remember it.If I find the link again, I'll post it. And I found Nvu OK, but a little hard to get into. Like all complicated programs, there is a learning curve, but I didn't find the documentation very helpful. Maybe it was just me. I'm sure it would be an acceptable solution to design web pages if you persevere with it. Quote QuoteWill do. Quote About Dreamweaver: Isn't that an expensive commercial product only?Yes. I was just saying, that's what I use. I know the topic is about free ones. But, I have found DreamWeaver to be easily the best I have used (out of Notepad, Nvu, and Frontpage XP/2003). It's not worth the cash if you only want to make we pages for fun, but it is a great program.Quote from: Calum on June 03, 2007, 12:16:15 PM ... I'm a bit confused by it, but I figured that was just me. Quote ... Which reminds me. I forgot to mention, for anyone else reading along, - there is also an extension that can be downloaded and installed in NVU, named NVU Tutorial for Beginners. Quote QuoteAbout Dreamweaver: Isn't that an expensive commercial product only?Yes. Wasn't sure. Quote ... Since you have used both, those last couple of sentences are meaningful. Thanks for the comparison and opinion. If you use linux, try Quanta. It's an AWESOME editor (not just for HTML either) and it has drop down menus to complete your tags and options to insert code for you. But I guess if you did use linux, you wouldn't be asking about html editors now would you?. Chilly i think dreamweaver is one of the best frontpage is ok but doesnt bet dreamweaver 8 its good u should try it out.I second the NVU-- http://www.nvu.com/websitehelp.php-- suggestion. It's great because it has both design view and code view. You can do WYSIWYG or handcode with this program. There's even NVU portable if you'd like to take the application around with you on a USB flash drive.Quote from: jamiet17 on June 08, 2007, 09:30:23 AM ChillyBut it costs lots of money. The poster specifically said free. |

Solve : Open specific page on web site? |
|
Answer» Hi Thanks Chris "Two separate items" ....... well in fact IMO whether you have one or two domains really makes little difference re access. If domain#2 was even on another server it'd 'seem' accessible by anyone going to it from a link. About the only access factor you'd be controlling would be access thru FTP - which we hope is yours alone. Of course password protection is another way to possibly try and keep one ''site'' less accessible. I still think your quickest and simplest solution is running a minisite within the main, on the one server - whether with a subdomain or just a special folder. I have several sites on at least two of my servers - one has some subdomains but other just uses 'extended' URLs which include the target special folder. Works for me.Thanks again. I'll try to set up a sub domain as you suggest. I might be back!!!! Thanks |

Answer» so, here's the deal.... I have this website template that i BOUGHT and it's driving me crazyyyyyy. i need one of the pages to display my thumbnails, then when i click on the thumbnail, i want the full sized image to come up. that's how it is on the template.. but i can't get it to work. it's in flash and html. I'm just thinking of deleting all of the pre existing code and starting over again for that part of it. anyone have the code i can just copy and paste, ive been spending wayyyyyyyyyy too LONG on this and it's making my head hurt. Try contacting the company that you bought the template from. They should be able to offer better support for their product than we could. i tried their template help, the live chat.. everything. the company we bought it from apparently is retarded. they won't give me any STRAIGHT answers. actually, they won't answer me period.. The code for that can be found at Dynamic Drive - for free. Their site has hundreds of codes to be copied and pasted to your heart desire. I have several different ways that I display pictures in my site, all courtesy of Dynamic Drive. It's BASIC so you need to understand a bit how html works. |

Solve : testing server? |

Answer» Does anyone know how to set up a testing server for:
ThanksQuote from: DukeIcewalker on July 15, 2008, 11:46:14 PM I get an error saying something like: "event not handled by the registered module." Are you sure your PHP Code is write? Just try something simple like: Quote from: DukeIcewalker on July 15, 2008, 11:46:14 PM What do I do to IIS to get it to accurately display PHP info? IIS is mainly for ASP and ASP.NET as it is made MICROSOFT, so I'm not 100% sure if it WOULD parse PHP files. I guess you could try but it mightn't work. For IIS, as far as I know, you put your files in the "wwwroot" folder, but I'd try the IIS Help section first. Keep me posted. I've been doing some learning on lynda.com and that's helped out a lot. I may have more questions later, though. thank youAs it turns out, I was trying to use iis for php and also version cue for php. I just went ahead and got apache, no big deal. I downloaded apache, php, and mysql, looks like it will work. lynda.com showed me how to set it up, now I'm up and running. I appreciate the help though.I'm glad it all worked out. Be sure to come back if you have any more problems/questions. |

Solve : HTML checkbox? |
|
Answer» I'm having some trouble with a form I designed, its used to allow researchers to submit a call to pick up radioactive waste. Here is the html of the problem area:
I am trying to make it so that, without using java(hopefully), if the two "REQUIRED" boxes are unchecked, the user is unable to submit the form, or the submit button is not able to be pressed down. Because right now WHETHER or not those boxes are checked have no bearing on how the form operates. Any easy ways to fix this?Back of mind is a SOLUTION but can't think of it right now. This is a sorta Boolean deal in a SENSE - 'and' and 'or' give a positive (true) but nor is false. Anyways for now - all that does come to mind is simplify - one checkbox with instructions to only check (as a required) IF - both category questions are satisfied - in other words, state in text that these two PARAMETERS (checks AND cards) must be met for a submission - otherwise do not use form. Of course they may be good reason you WANT them separated. Sorry no more help right now. Thanks, I resolved the issue and just went with using javascript |

Solve : Attaching a PDF to my website? |
|
Answer» Hello, PDF stands for Portable Document Format, a file format developed by the Adobe Corporation for creating documents with images and COMPLEX formatting. Its capabilities go well beyond those of HTML and it has become a de facto standard in many areas of document preparation and design. There are several reasons why you might want to display PDF files on your Website:Thanks for your help, some useful considerations here. I'm still not sure how to create the link to the PDF. When I link to a picture I use a hosted picture and when I link from a picture to a web page I use the page address. So If I want to link from a picture to a PDF do I need to find somewhere that will 'host' the PDF (I have just seen free site which I think does this)? More info about how you create your web pages would be helpful. Are you using software installed on your computer to do this? What software? Or, are you doing creating your web pages through some web browser interface with a web hosting service? Do you know how to upload files from your computer to your web server? The HTML code would be in this format: name of document Hello there, Thank you for your response. I have web hosting with Easyspace and use their template package called Easysite Live wich I have downloaded . I can use this to add pictures and text or I have the option of putting in HTML. When finished I just press a publish site button to upload to my website. The PDF that I would like to attach to the site is on my computer desktop (and in My Documents). If I use the HTML code you have kindly provided, inserting my webpage where it says 'my site' and the name of the PDF this doesn't work, it creates a link to Easyspace domain name search for that name, so it seems that I have missed something! The PDF hosting site I saw was freepdfhosting.com. Excuse my like of knowledge in this area but is this required or am I on the totaly wrong track! . Thank you I visited http://www.easyspace.com/ and saw no mention of Easysite Live and I don't know how Easysite Live works. But, I gather it's a program you install on your computer and then use to design your web pages and it provides templates you can use. Inserting pictures on your pages and then "publishing" those pages with Easysite Live is one thing. Uploading a PDF file to the web server so that your llink to a PDF file works is another thing, and my guess is that it either can not be done with Easysite Live or, if it can, you just don't know how. Have you used their Control Panel? If not, I suggest you get familiar with it. It will probably have a File Manager feature which will allow you to upload files from your hard drive to the web server.Ahh! I understand better now. I have used the control panel but not come accross this feature. I will have a look again and if I can't find anything I will enquire with Easyspace. I thought it was the same sort of of PROCEEDURE as putting on text or photos. Thanks for taking the time to explain. Thank you Easyspace uploaded the PDF files for me and I have created links to them on my web site! |

Solve : Front Page Spacing to fit all Sized Windows? |
|
Answer» I'm working on a website using front page 2003. When I create the site in a full sized window, it looks GREAT. However when I open it online, if my browser is not full size, the words overlap the pictures. When viewed full size it looks FINE. How can I change it to be adaptable to a smaller window, without it all overlapping? Thanks! What technique did you USE for positioning text and pictures on your web pages? Did you use tables for this? |

Solve : What a www...? |
|
Answer» Ok. no but i'm talking about the "www" part. E.g. for invisionfree itsJust to perhaps slightly refine a point here, they did not replace www with z1. As BC_Programmer illustrated, the site can be viewed at both http://z1.invisionfree.com and http://www.z1.invisionfree.com. As I previously posted: Quote from: soybean on July 02, 2008, 06:26:03 AM Second-level domains can be divided into further domain levels (for example, www.one.coolexample.com). These subdomains sometimes represent different computer servers within departments, but they can be created for any purpose. More than one second-level domain name can be used for the same IP address. This is what you see with z1.invisionfree, a DIVIDING into further domain levels. Here's another example: http://support.dlink.com/faq/ Instead of all pages on D-Link's site beginning with www.dlink, they has a sub-domain for support. And, http://support.dlink.com/faq/ can also be displayed as http://www.support.dlink.com/faq/ The dropping of www and the fact that any sites will work either with a URL which includes www or without the www is, I BELIEVE, possible because the web server software allows this. It's called a subdomain. Like help.microsoft.com, msdn.microsoft.com, technet.microsoft.com, etc. It depends on how the website is set up, whether or not you can still put a www in front of the subdomain. Most of the sites I've visited don't allow it. It will just give you a "404 - page not found". For example, if you type www.technet.microsoft.com, you won't go anywhere. Quote from: michaewlewis on July 03, 2008, 10:56:58 AM It's called a subdomain. Like help.microsoft.com, msdn.microsoft.com, technet.microsoft.com, etc. Ahh, thank you, thats exactly what i wanted to know. Also defined on our subdomain definition. Surprisingly I didn't have this mentioned in our main URL definition either. So I've also updated this page to contain this INFORMATION for future users. If your website uses cPanel its easy to set up. Just click "Subdomains". |

Solve : Upload from remote machine 2 remote machine? |
|
Answer» I was wondering how is it POSSIBLE to upload a file from a remote machine using a Remote machine, upload script and database? , i WANT to transfer files between WebserverA and WebserverB, WITHOUT using my system as the center of the connection.. they are both remote and i only have remote access to one of them. download.com/installsoftwares.exe --> mywebserver.cc/chmodedFolder/installsoftwares.exeYes, this is possible providing you've GOT shell access on the machine. You could telnet (ALTHOUGH I'd recommend SSH) to webserverA and then at that server prompt use a file transfer utility such as FTP to send a file from webserverA to webserverB. Of course if the file was not on WebserverA you'd need to upload the file to it before being able to move it across. |
