Solve : Firefox vs. Internet Explorer code issue?

Answer»

Hey, I'm writing a little site and everything is working nicely, except for one problem.

In Internet Explorer, the site is exactly as it should be (for once) but in firefox, a small bar of whitespace is added (impossible! Not in fx!).

Anyway, here's the link so you can take a gander at it in realtime and take a look at the source if you're so inclined. Thanks for any help. (My question is: what is the code that is CAUSING the whitespace? How can I get rid of it?)

http://trueblue.dnsdojo.com

-rockerestIs that going to be the background for the main content?
Try stretching the png vertically...
Could you make the whole thing the background and put the main content in an iframe? I think that would look alright, although some other members would disagree.
What do you want it too look like? The problem is that you designed it in IE. IE doesn't handle HTML/CSS PROPERLY. So, when you design something for IE and it looks perfect, that usually won't be the case for other browsers. I'm far too tired to go through your code right now, so the best I can do is suggest that you start over and design the site to work in Firefox (you can install the very handy web developer toolbar). This will make it APPEAR improperly in IE, but there are hacks available to fix this. You could create a javscript to differentiate between ie browsers and others. Make ie use the code that is currently working for it, and then figure out something else for firefox.
Or come up with a completely different approach to your design.Quote from: CBMatt on June 20, 2007, 01:21:21 PM

The problem is that you designed it in IE.

Actually, I design with Firefox as my primary target browser.

Quote from: CBMatt on June 20, 2007, 01:21:21 PM
IE doesn't handle HTML/CSS properly.

...which is WHY I design primarily with Firefox. :-)

I only checked it in IE because it wasn't working in fx and I was frustrated.

Try stretching the png vertically...

The .png is the only file in that part of the , and it's set as the background. No amount of image resizing would help that.

Yeah, see, I want to be able to stretch the main content as much as I want to, which is why I've got it all cut up into different pieces. [edit: plus I HATTTEEEE frames]

Ahahahahahaha...
...ahem...
That's a lot of work that I'm not PARTICULARLY inclined to tackle. I'm more inclined to find code that is cross-browser compatible. MUCH easier...and it makes you look cool. You're all like, "Man, look at my awesome site...it doesn't matter WHAT browser you look at it in, it works!" And then all the ladies LOVE you.

-rockerestAlas, my issue was a simple one. However, the root of said problem is still unknown.

Both the background image and the flash buttons in the in question were 42 pixels tall. Despite that fact, the was more than 42 pixels tall (accounting for the whitespace). All it took was telling the to be ONLY 42 pixels tall and...vwala!...the whitespace disappeared!

Thanks for all the ideas

-rockerest

ps
CBMatt: I've been using the firefox developer bar QUITE regularly for about a year now, but find it to be somewhat disorganized. Very good if you know where the tool is you're looking for, though. What are your thoughts?Sorry, didn't realize you were designing it in Firefox. I guess that totally blew my SUGGESTION out the window. Ha. In any case, I'm glad you've got it working. Now it looks better in Firefox (as long as NoScript is set to allow it) than IE, just as it should.

As for the toolbar...it has a lot of features, and I agree that it can be easy to get lost in everything. You just have to try to familiarize yourself with the features you use most so it kinda becomes second nature. I only use a select handful of the features, so it's not too hard for me to remember where everything is. It'd be nice if you could customize it a bit more and hide the features you don't need. I suppose you could always get the source code and mess around with a bit. Heh.

Solve : Can I use more nameservers for my web site??

Answer»

I have a wimpy web site that goes down for no reason. I THINK the server is overcooked. I have over web space available. Can I just copy all my stuff on the other server and then just add it in the name server stuff in the DNS thing? That way if the first two name servers do not respond, the others would. Is that right? Ore does it not work that way?
I am so embarrassed I have been doing that stuff for YEARS and never learned EXACTLY how the DNS works. Do I have it all wrong? I thought I should ask before I try.

You have a registered domain name, right? Do you use a fee-based HOSTING service? Any support available from them?

Solve : HTML DOM help?

Answer»
Hi I am new to HTML dom.

Basically i just want to know how to access all the elements in the html document using the dom framework. So FAR i have document.childNodes which just GIVES me an array with the HTML root element in it. I need to look at all the elements in the head and the body to extract thier ids (if they have one only).

Basically the end result of my javascript function is to extract all the html id values from a simple html document.

any suggestions?Code: [SELECT]// Need to wait until doc has loaded.

onload = function(){
var ids = [];
var elms = document.getElementsByTagName("*");

// Loop stops when elms[k] returns NULL
for(var k=-1, elm; elm=elms[++k]; )
if(elm.id) // if id exists, and is not zero length
ids.push(elm.id);

// Now ids array CONTAINS all id strings
}

Solve : Webhosting Evaluation?

Answer»

I was hoping for some credible insights as to how to evaluate a NEW webhost for which I need:
server for two sites, 6-8 other aliases (rerouting)
no e-mail broadcast restrictions through hoster's e-mail server (technical newsletter - NOT spam)
tech support availability
800 number useable in Canada for tech support
forum compatible
network status available on net
2 Gig space total
fast server needed - I checked for T3 but most seem not to be available to the public (ie verizon) and there seems to be a lot of misrepresentation of speed
need/want foreign language support (not just Unicode, as seems the case with Yahoo) for Chinese & Japanese in particular)
we do not sell on our website
minimal downtime during the transition from the old hoster to new

I am looking for a new hoster because:
1) level of downtime of e-mail server is unacceptable
2) tech support timited to weekdays and business hours
3) when they have problems they ignore my e-mails. Last time, they PUT a voice mail on their line for two days saying they had phone difficulties while both the webserver and e-mail server were down.
4) I only get 300 MB space per site - though they do only charge me for one site - they provide a second "free"

Any advice or suggestions would be gratefully accepted. PERHAPS even possible critical questions/issues that need be addressed by a potential new hoster.

One other question - anyone know of an easy/ier way of converting an HTML website to CSS?Whats up with no replies - did I ask too many questions in my post? I know that there is lots of experise on this site - like SOYBEAN - who I am sure can make some helpful comments on at least some of the issues??

Solve : Hire programer (one page)?

Answer»

Hello,

I am looking for a designer to a Home page(I payed a programmer but he never gave me the work). All I have is a screenshot of what he did, which I liked so there is not need for creative skills. All I need is the redrawing of what he did and just a few features added. If you are intersted please contact me.

Thanks

MysoftI'll take a look, I don't have much to do so it would at least be an interesting diversion.

Solve : own website?

Hey guy's i want to know how to go about doing my own website has anyone been on miniclips.com? well i want something like that my own game's site but i dont know where to start and i really need help if anyone one can help it would be so greatfull hello GUYS can anyone help on this pleaseWell I'm not sure if you want to completely make your own website and host it but I'll put some good websites down for beginners that I know of that are a great way to start off.

http://www.freewebs.com This is a neat site, which allows you to pick a template, add mini clip games, a blog, GUEST book, shout boxes, post your own videos, flash clips and movies and I use this myself and definitely recommend it.

http://www.piczo.com This is a good site which allows you to customize the site alot, using html and other types of codes. This site is the best for customizing because of the HTML feature, picture feature but I can't remember if there is a video feature.

http://javascript.internet.com/ Good site to get codes for neat add ons for your sites.

The two links I posted at the top, allow you to have and customize and host a website for free. Although the domain name will incorporate the name in some way there are ways to shorten it for example sites like:

http://www.freedomain.co.nr/
http://www.dot.tk/en/index.html

Solve : How do I completely protect my site via HTACCESS??

My current HTACCESS file looks like this

Code: [Select]RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://www.mywebsite.com/.*$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://www.mywebsite.com$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://mywebsite.com/.*$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://mywebsite.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule .*\.(jpg|jpeg|gif|png|bmp)$ - [F,NC]

I would like to make it so that the entire website is password protected. How would I do that?

Zylstra...

Depending on your host...

If you have a Control Panel you can log into...supplied by your host...you may be able to log into it and look for a link to password protect your directories.

I use cPanel X...supplied by my host. I have a link as I specified before...and I can select the root DIRECTORY, public_html, and password protect it. If anyone wants access to the site...they'll need the password.

Hope this helped.I'll check it out, I dont think I can protect the /public_html/ using my cPanel VERSION 11 (newest version) but I will try

Changing my mind, I am using cPanel X 10.9.0-RELEASE 7965

I cannot access my root directory using my pay-for hosting service, but I have a free one that has cPanel 11, which does allow me to, meaning that I have to do it manually...
How would I go about doing this, and which folder do I place it in? Zylstra...

Yes, you can password protect your public_html directory.

Log into CPanel...navigate to Password Protect Directories.

Look for the public_html folder...you'll see a "/" without the quotes next to it. Click it. You'll be able to configure the password protection on the page that comes up.

Hope you found that useful.!!
My TIMELINE:

Thanks "The Saviour"!
I think this will solve my problems! You're welcome, Zylstra.Okay, its working great! Thanks

One quick question:
Is it possible to unprotect a sub directory?
Like, the /public_html/ is protected, but I want
/public_html/imageshare/files/ to be unprotected. Is this possible? Not positive, but I think once you pw protect the root, you won't be able to access a sub directory.

Something you might want to talk to your host about.

Solve : Sorry to be a bother...?

Answer»

Hi, im new to the board and was WONDERING if any of you would be able to help, anything would be great!

I have a website where i am selling personalised gifts and the customer has many options to choose from when they are buying my products, such as: What colour, font, paper etc. So what i am trying to do is create a form (I THINK) that will allow customers to select the colours they want etc and have this infomation be sent to my email via my website, just like an order form.

However, i don't have a server or anything like that, and wouldn't even know where to begin with something like that. This is just a little business and I was wondering if there is any HTML CODE or such that I can learn that will help me ACHIEVE my goal!

Thanks for your time,
SarahNo html code will do that. You would want to use PHP's mail function for that.
http://us.php.net/manual/en/function.mail.php
If you don't want to get into php, you could use a javascript to send email through the client's default email program. This would be a slightly involved piece of code for what you're wanting to do though.
Hi sarah. are you sure you don't have a server who might support the program you want to have running on your page? I wonder where you keep your website. As long as you have webspace on a server who can support these MINI programs we like to add to our pages, the code is very simple to add an auto-emailed form to your website. I could copy and paste it to you.
If you site is on webspace that does not provide you with any
services I advise you to go to someone else. It may cost you around $100.00 yearly, but this is your business right? : ) spend a little make a little. a good webservice provider is worth the cost.

Solve : HTML automatic scrolling?

Answer»

I have an HTML website, but some of the pages are built on a free web hosting SERVICE - Tripod - so that each page has about 2 inches of hideous ads at the top. Is there any code that can have the page automatically scroll down a couple inches every time that page is OPENED - something not involving an anchor but which just automatically would scroll past the ads?Not that I know of (of course, I'm not an HTML expert).

You could switch to a free server WITHOUT adds like 110mb.I don't think you can do that. Besides, you really shouldn't be doing it. Ads are to be expected with free hosting. After all, how else can you expect it to be free?

If you really want to get away from this, spend $4/mo for a hosting service. I don't know what the catch is with 100mb that CompGuy17 mentioned, but I'd bet there's some catch. Again, think about it. No hosting service can operate without incurring operating costs. So, how can they really offer ad-less, free hosting? This is just basic Economics 101. There's got to be some FINANCIAL incentive to operate a hosting service. Without fees or ads, where's the revenue coming from?Quote from: soybean on June 03, 2007, 04:41:32 PM

Soybean, there are no strings attached. 110mb gets its money from donations. Ask Calum. He uses it too.

Besides, most of the Linux OSs are free. Where do they get their money from?redbuck, you would find it hard or impossible to remove or hide the ads, and you shouldn't try anyway as they are supported by ads.
As CompGuy17 said, I do use 110mb, and there are no catches.
They are supported/owned/run by 2 companies, and also cover costs with donations.
It's free, reliable, ad-free hosting, no strings attached.
I highly rwcommend it.
And no, I'm not employed by them.Like EVERYONE else, I don't believe what you want can be done. There are other methods, of course, but if Tripod finds out about you hiding ads, they will remove your site. You can use the javascript funtion "window.scroll" to scroll down. check out dynamic drive for an example.

But you'll probably get your site shut down. So don't do it. Do the smart thing and get a real site. Their not expensive and you're not limited by ads.Quote from: soybean on June 04, 2007, 08:03:55 PM

Yes, but a lot of people may not even visit the main page, but just skip to the login page (like I do).

So far, I've had fun with it ( I just don't know if there is something easier/better out there for us ). Doing something simple with HTML isn't too difficult. The key word here is "simple".
I'm stumbling and fumbling with CSS though.

I'm partial to HTML-Kit. It's simple, but I like it.I've spent a little time with Nvu and I think it's a good tool for creating web pages. The other two programs mentioned also look good. Which is best? I don't know.

And, these are not the only ones. Download.com has 222 programs in their HTML editors category. Quote from: soybean on June 02, 2007, 12:49:12 PM

Somewhere I read a definition, and it seemed to differentiate between HTML editors and What You See Is What You Get editors.
Apparently NVU is a WYSIWYG editor.
I don't know if this is a Good Thing or a Bad Thing. Just wanted to mention it for anyone reading along.

Yes, it's how I started too, and how I've been doing it all so far. And I do perfer that method over WYSIWYG. But I have having a little trouble now, so I'm trying the other method to get back on track.I like a bit of both.
I use DreeamWeaver myself, and I use both WYSIWYG and the code views to achieve what I want.
I wouldn't feel comfortable just coding or just WYSIWYG editing.

Bear with me, this is new territory for me.

NVU has four modes. Normal, HTML tags, source, and preview.
I think - when you say "code views" - that you are referring to either the HTML tags view or source view.
Or is it both?

I think I understand what you fellows are saying, because I've found myself a few times flipping back and forth among the different views - sometimes one is better for whatever reason.

I found an extension too. Lauchy.

I like it. Can also be installed in Thunderbird and Firefox.

Both, I believe.
Dreamweaver has 3 views - code, split and design.
Code is similar to Nvu's source view, split is source and design.
And Nvu's HTML tags view is very different, pretty useful though.

Solve : How I can put HTML inside HTML?

Hi
I'm making a web as a project in school, so I need to put some examples of webs (made only with HTML) on it: but I need to show the output as the code; so, is there an ATTRIBUTE of HTML, or JavaScript that helps me to explain the compiler that the code, in that case, it's just a text that needs to be displayed in the screen?Your say you are a novice
Here is the novice ANSWER:
Show the source on your screen.
Take a screenshot.
Use the image in your code to show the HTML now as a image.
Yes, there is is another way. But TRY this first. It works.
I really am trying to help you.
HTML Imports, part of the Web Components CAST, is a way to include HTML documents in other HTML documents. You're not limited to markup either. An import can also include CSS, JavaScript, or ANYTHING else an . html file can contain.

Solve : Web Design Beginner?

Answer»

I made a smart access SYSTEM the other day using ESP32 and a touch screen. But I want to finish it further, so I'm going to make full use of the ESP32's wifi capabilities, and for that I may NEED to make a web page first. Does anyone recommend any software for making web pages for newbies?

Here is a video of my project for your reference.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gl-Nofxb6I4In case you don't already have this, you may need this info here: https://microcontrollerslab.com/accessing-esp32-web-server-anywhere-world-esp8266/

You can create a WEBPAGE easily with notepad or any other text editor and its free. Lots of tutorials on how to create webpages as simple HTML at YouTube and elsewhere. Biggest thing is going to be if your looking at a secure connection to the ESP32 from outside of the local area network as then the webpage you create needs to be one that isn't something easily hacked to gain access to your ESP32. Making a secure connection from anywhere in the world and connecting to the ESP32 will require a skilled programmer and hardware other than just the ESP32 being open to a DMZ connection from the outside.

If your going to use it for a local wifi connection and not a connection from outside your LAN then it can be done easily with a basic webpage and passing the correct information to the ESP32 from that webpage. For example I had a bunch of remote power CONTROL devices on a network that allowed for me to reboot and turn on or off devices connected to the outlets at the power controllers. I made a simple webpage that passed the instructions over the local LAN to the controllers as it passed the username/password and what IP to pass it to along with the instructions of what to reset or turn on or off for outlet number.

There should be others HTML code out there to look at for reference on how to interface with the ESP32 via a webpage, then just edit that for your own needs.

If you want something that looks very professional then you will want to buy a web design software package or hire someone to do the work for you.

Solve : Don't understand the objective of this spam?

Answer»

Hi All,

I have a website that includes a Contact Webmaster page. When a user fills in this page, I receive an email. I want to know about broken links, misspelled words, confusing features etc. etc.

Lately, I've been receiving a bunch of emails (from the Contact Webmaster page) containing a single line of gibberish. For example: "Hi, ego volo scire vestri pretium." The page asks for a first and last name and a good portion of the time the user (spammer) fills both fields with "Grantbiz".

I just can't figure out the objective. NONE of the messages try to direct me to a URL and the system doesn't allow the attachment of files so there's no chance of distributing malware. I EVEN considered they might be trying to overwhelm some enemy's mailbox (because the system sends a confirmation email to the address entered by the user) but nearly all of the supposed sender email addresses are different.

Any ideas on what might be the spammer’s angle?

Also, before you ask, I do not have a CAPTCHA control on the page. Prior to now, I never felt the need. It's now on my to-do list.

Thanks,
Mortimer
Sounds like someone who might just want to be a pest and crash your mailbox by it being full of nonsense. Additionally some HACKERS out there they try to get the ATTENTION of people to plug problems like this by pointing out the problem my making the person at the other end see the fall out of such a problem.

Biggest thing is its someone out there with a script that is autofilling info and sending over and over again. BEST block to this is a Captcha unfortunatelty.

Solve : Is there a easy way to put a Live Score of your fav. Team on your own website?

I would like to PUT a LIVE Score on my sports website and when that team plays another team Live. I want to be able to have a live score on my website. For example Dallas vs. Washington (NFL). So let say the score is Dallas 17, Washington 13 in 3rd Quarter. I want the Live score to post or to have
Dallas 17
Washington 13
3rd quarter
Or something like that. How can I do it?Might seem simplistic but - assuming there is a site with REAL time results then link to that. Of course you want to display results.

Even better might be if the other site has a live feed ... podcast DEAL - see if there is a way to embed that in your page. There will be a way - just not sure of best way to go.Yes, you would probably have to email your favourite team and ask them if they have podcasts available.

Most websites use flash, AJAX (Asynchronous JAVASCRIPT and XML.) and PHP.

Solve : Open specific page on web site?

Answer»

Hi

My web site was made using Serif webplus 10.
Now I want to arrange something that forces the web site to open at a page other than the home page.
IE if the link www.website.com then home page opens but if the link was
www.website.com/page3 then page 3 would open.
Is this possible please?
Thanks
Setters The norm is for the index.htm, .html, .php etc to be the default page to load with the URL as a basic domain call - the index file being on root. In fact an index page in any folder will open without being called by name normally.

There is a way to alter this thru an htaccess file.

Apart from supplying a ''domain -plus'' such as your page 3 EXAMPLE as a URL for FOLKS to use - I think you'll have to either use the htaccess route or - rename your current index page and substitute that with the page you want to open as the index page on root - the quickest fix if it is just one specific page you want as homepage instead of current one. Be sure tho to ensure paths are corrected if need be.

Re htaccess - do some Googling and you'll find plenty of info available. Thanks
I'll give the htaccess a try.
GOOGLE here I come!
Thanks again. One point is not clear here, in my opinion. Do you mean that "page3" is actually a version of your home page, just with a different font, or is page3 a totally different page? If the latter, don't you still want the home page, e.g. www.website.com to appear as the home page?I've probably not explained properly.
Page 3 is completely different from other pages on the site.
What i want to do is leave the main site @www.mysite.com so that the index page and the rest of the site are loaded as usual, but have
a completely different site, like a mini site, loaded completely separate from the main site when www.mysite.com/page3 is clicked.
It seems to be possible from what I read on google but ,to me,is very complicated and maybe beyond me.
Thanks for your replyI think I see what you are after ... sort of!

Two options come to mind - one would be to run a sub domain on your server - www.mysite2.com/ or simply use that page 3 link from mysite.com to go to what can in effect be another site (to all appearances) within which all links keep a visitor in that ''site'' - a specific folder containing all aspects of the mini site - but linking back to the main as and if required.

This is quite easy but - still not sure I have fully grasped your plan properly. Am I close?

Don't forget - if you had this page3 called index.htm and it was within a dedicated folder your link could be simply www.mysite.com/minisite/ which would call that page, from which all other ''special'' pages could be accessed - even using further sub folders. If you want page3 to be opened in a separate browser window, while the main page is loaded, try the onLoad function. Thanks Chris
I think the subdomain is the answer.
I need the main site and the mini site to be 2 separate items in that you can't access the main site from the mini site.
I suppose I want 2 sites from the 1 server using 1 domain name, it might be easier to get another domain and have 2 sites!
But if the" 2 from 1" idea is workable I'd rather go that way.
Thanks again

"Two separate items" ....... well in fact IMO whether you have one or two domains really makes little difference re access. If domain#2 was even on another server it'd 'seem' accessible by anyone going to it from a link. About the only access factor you'd be controlling would be access thru FTP - which we hope is yours alone. Of course password protection is another way to possibly try and keep one ''site'' less accessible.

I still think your quickest and simplest solution is running a minisite within the main, on the one server - whether with a subdomain or just a special folder. I have several sites on at least two of my servers - one has some subdomains but other just uses 'extended' URLs which include the target special folder. Works for me.Thanks again.
I'll try to set up a sub domain as you suggest.
I might be back!!!!

Solve : question...?

creating a site using HTML and i'm just wondering if this is possible or if i'm just wasting my time:

what i have is a table with multiple cells. in each cell there is an input, either a dropdown or text field.

what i want to know is, can the input or selection of the user affect the bg color of the cell?

in case that doesnt make SENSE...
Example: a table with 2 cells. each cell has a dropdown menu with "yes" or "no". the user selects either one in each cell and clicks a submit button. after CLICKING submit, if the user selected yes in a cell, the bg color of the cell turns green, but if they chose no, the bg color turns red.

is that possible? thanks Quick thoughts - JS could well be the WAY to go tho have no code to suggest right now.

Other possible might be to set up a link properties set in css, specific to this table situation - and give your drop down contents a null href each .... and so make it possible to have a css set like - a.cells, a.cells:hover and a.cells:visited - PROBABLY leaving out the hover as not too necessary.

Mind you - this is when I think on it only going to change color of the selected LIST item, not the cell itself.

I'll give it more thought if time allows. Bit busy.Quote from: ChrisXPPro on July 30, 2008, 06:29:05 PM

If I make no reference to point size the text ends up directly under the GIF like I want. However, the text ends up being too large. If I use any type of tag such as I will END up with space below the GIF and then the text . I do NOT want extra blank space below the GIF. I want it to appear as normal spacing just like a sentence would have when moving to the next line.

I am somewhat HTML literate from a few years back and am just getting back into this with my web site. I still need to get up to speed on XHTML and CSS but the long-term goal is just to build a simple web site initially. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Billy WalkerSo, your footer contains an image, and you want to put text right below the image, without a space? Did you try the
tag? Also you could use a to style the text.

Your page might look like this:

Code: [Select]<html>

<head>
<title>My Page</title>
</head>

<body>
<!-- HEADING ETC. HERE -->
<!-- MORE CODE HERE -->

<img src="/...../image.gif" border="0" /><br />
<div style="font-size:100%;color:blue;">My Website</div>
</body>

</html>
Yes - I'd agree a
will knock text down one line - half of what a

would do. tags also apply a

type double line spacing.

Altho it is now deprecated you could use tags to KEEP it CENTERED and INCLUDE a Your text statement to adjust size. 3 is default so maybe size 2 or even 1 would do the trick.

Another option using css might be a Your text - insert size of font you want.Yes, the and tags are now deprecated, so it would probably be better better to use:

Code: [Select] <!-- /...../ -->

<img src="/...../image.gif" border="0" /><br />
<div style="text-align:center;font-size:100%">My Website</div>

Solve : Resizing Issue?

Answer»

Ok, my site: http://www.manganime.ucoz.com, is too wide if the browser window's height/width ratio is changed, and I don't want to show a horizontal scroll bar. I've searched Google and these forums for keywords like "liquid design" and "fluid design" and "browser auto-resize" but I can't find what I want.
Basically, my question is this: Can I make my page automatically change size to fit the browser's width perfectly so that there's never any horizontal scrolling bar? Thanks guys for answering. So you use TABLES in the source code, right?

Just put this into the main table tag:
Code: [Select]<table width="100%" ... >
. . . . .
</table>

BTW, I DONT see any horizontal scrollbars. Thanks for replying but my tables were already set like that. Could you set it to maybe 80%, so it will be compatable with all screen/browser sizes?

How much, roughly, is it overflowing to the right?I found this at Dynamic Drive a while ago, I hope it helps, I love that site.

Auto Maximize window

In the head section:

Just a few thoughts .......

Even if tables set to 100%, which should normally give an auto adjust for the size it's being viewed at - some content can ''force'' size beyond, such as very long text strings, large images etc. Other problem with auto sizing is formatting can change with size change - IMO not always useful for some text layouts, particularly when pics embedded within and then a scroll bar can appear. It only takes one item within a page to ''push'' the size to then need a horizontal scroll bar with smaller screen RES..

The auto maximize SCRIPT shown in last post should work but - maybe just me - but I hate to have my browser forced full screen!! I work in 1680x1050 res and have my app's cascaded and rarely want full screen - it's an option I'd use with discretion.

Again just me but - for uniformity of layout it seems better to choose fixed width .... either design for the 800x600 folks (they still exist) - or go for the 1024x768 crew which probably suits most laptops and is still within bounds for majority of surfers. Of course, you can use a css wrapper or use a 100% table as your wrapper but use some fixed size elements within that for content.

Solve : Drop down menu bar link?

Answer»

How do I SCRIPT a drop-down menu bar that when I move over a menu item a drop down menu appears that is a LIST of links? Here is a tutorial on how to do it: http://echoecho.com/jsdropdown01.htmAnother option - free for personal use as long as credit given - http://www.http//www.yxscripts.com/ - current VERSION is IIRC G5.

I have used this quite a few times and it is very versatile - it's a MIX of js and CSS - the latter enabling a lot of flexibility with appearance.

To see an example visit my wife's site - http://www.thistlebees.com/ which will give you an idea as to how it performs.

It is possible as well - using CSS o its own to achieve this result - employing unordered list approach with CSS control over position and mouse ACTIONS etc.

Solve : Seating Chart/Selection?

Answer»

I work for a local theater and have been asked to create an ONLINE seating chart selection type form for ticket SALES. What it needs to do is have checkboxes representing the seats. People should be able to select the seats of their choice. However, once the seats are entered into our SYSTEM, they will disappear on the web so others can't CHOOSE them. How do I do this? Any suggestions or IDEAS?

I have this website template that i BOUGHT and it's driving me crazyyyyyy. i need one of the pages to display my thumbnails, then when i click on the thumbnail, i want the full sized image to come up. that's how it is on the template.. but i can't get it to work. it's in flash and html. I'm just thinking of deleting all of the pre existing code and starting over again for that part of it. anyone have the code i can just copy and paste, ive been spending wayyyyyyyyyy too LONG on this and it's making my head hurt. Try contacting the company that you bought the template from. They should be able to offer better support for their product than we could. i tried their template help, the live chat.. everything. the company we bought it from apparently is retarded. they won't give me any STRAIGHT answers. actually, they won't answer me period.. The code for that can be found at Dynamic Drive - for free. Their site has hundreds of codes to be copied and pasted to your heart desire. I have several different ways that I display pictures in my site, all courtesy of Dynamic Drive. It's BASIC so you need to understand a bit how html works.

Solve : freesevers question?

Answer»

I recently had a site uploaded to here www.1zidane.8k.com but know SINCE I havent used it in a while I forgot how to setup the PAGES to be displayed. So how do you do it? I have the files I want uploaded.I had a look at that. You dont have a homepage yet do you? If your homepage is one of those pages you need to rename it to index.html or default.html etc.

I would advise you to create an images FOLDER. Its easier to organise everything.

That info should get it all started and HOPEFULLY how to do the rest of it will come to you again. How do I do that? I looked around an couldnt FIND it. Also, was unable to get to the FAQ so thats why.How do you do what? Rename files, create folders?

So, this is the homepage? Or do you have your homepage uploaded yet? Which ever, just login here with your username and password and go to the main filemanager page.

Here you should be able to do everything, including renaming files, creating folders, uploading files etc.

Let me know how it goes.

Solve : testing server?

Answer»

Does anyone know how to set up a testing server for:

Vista 32bit
Dreamweaver
Version cue cs3?
MySQL/PHP
Firefox 3.0
phpmyadmin

It MAY or may not be something I'm doing with the file paths.

Any and all help is MUCH appreciated.

Thanks in advance. You can download XAMPP from apache friends.

I supports PHP, MySQL, CGI/Perl, and has PHPMyAdmin built in. It uses Apache Server.

Just place all your PHP files, etc, in the "htdocs" folder. Then open Firefox or whatever browser you're using and type "http://localhost/ ".

You can change all the settings for XAMPP by going to "http://localhost/xampp/".Many thanksNo problem. Hope it works.I'm stuck. Can you explain a little more on how to set up a testing server?

Thanks again. How exactly do you mean explain? Have you got it downloaded?

Just install it and save it to your main program files folder (C:\ Program Files\ etc.)
Now double click on xampp_control.exe in the main XAMPP folder. This is the control panel for starting the MySQL, PHP, SMTP etc. services. The best thing to do is just start all the services.

Next scroll to the "htdocs" folder in the XAMPP directory. Create a new folder for example "my_website", and place your HTML, PHP, etc files in there.

Now open your browser and type: "http://localhost/my_website/ < name of HTML, PHP file etc. >".

Thats basically it. If you need more help just back and I'll be happy to help.I'm currently mystified on how to get my testing server to do what I want it to do. I'm now going to use IIS instead of version cue and try to view my PHP files. When I try to view a php page, I get an error saying something like: "event not handled by the registered module."

I used GUI tools through MySQL, that's working.

So, if you don't mind:

  • What do I do to IIS to get it to accurately display PHP info?
  • What paths do I need to configure?
  • If I'm not aware of something, what should I be considering?

ThanksQuote from: DukeIcewalker on July 15, 2008, 11:46:14 PM

IIS is mainly for ASP and ASP.NET as it is made MICROSOFT, so I'm not 100% sure if it WOULD parse PHP files. I guess you could try but it mightn't work.

For IIS, as far as I know, you put your files in the "wwwroot" folder, but I'd try the IIS Help section first.

Keep me posted.
I've been doing some learning on lynda.com and that's helped out a lot.

I may have more questions later, though.

thank youAs it turns out, I was trying to use iis for php and also version cue for php. I just went ahead and got apache, no big deal.

I downloaded apache, php, and mysql, looks like it will work.

lynda.com showed me how to set it up, now I'm up and running. I appreciate the help though.I'm glad it all worked out. Be sure to come back if you have any more problems/questions.

Solve : hyperlinking text to an embedded music player?

Answer»

Hey everyone, I've been in here a few times before and got all my questions answered- now that my site is nearly complete I am in need of some serious help yet again.

I need to find out how to make clickable links play specified music files in an embedded music player on the same page, below is a an EXAMPLE of what I want it to look like, if theres a way to make the player look similar (dark) in aesthetics then I'd like to do that as well.

As you can see the text above the player is in list format and the first song is linked to the player, thus when it is clicked on it BEGINS to play in the player- I don't want a song to play in the player prior to one song being clicked on.Sorry to start off with this but please check the link for the image as its not working.

You could probably use JavaScript to activate the flash player with an onClick="function".@ KPAC - The image is there. Check your browser settings.

@ Indienation - Where did you find the player? Did you make it or download it? Is it a flash player?
Do you want the text links to be part of the flash player, or is it going to be regular html?

Okay this is my new player it is http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=JW_FLV_Media_Player the JW FLV Media Player- in the image above you see I'll have the text from the last image in the same box, and it will be an on click play- every song needs to be ABLE to play on click in the same player though- I have no idea how to make this work; I'd prefer it be regular linked html perhaps controlled by javascript or something, the player is a flash player. Check out the WIKI at the website you linked. It tells you what is needed to do what you are asking.
http://code.longtailvideo.com/trac/wiki/FlashAPI#Eventfiring

Basically, you set up a javascript link that tells it to play a specific song.

Solve : HTML checkbox?

Answer»

I'm having some trouble with a form I designed, its used to allow researchers to submit a call to pick up radioactive waste. Here is the html of the problem area:

Click here to indicate that all containers have been checked for contamination
(REQUIRED)

Click here to indicate that all waste card information has been completed
for radioisotopes and activities (REQUIRED)

I am trying to make it so that, without using java(hopefully), if the two "REQUIRED" boxes are unchecked, the user is unable to submit the form, or the submit button is not able to be pressed down. Because right now WHETHER or not those boxes are checked have no bearing on how the form operates. Any easy ways to fix this?Back of mind is a SOLUTION but can't think of it right now. This is a sorta Boolean deal in a SENSE - 'and' and 'or' give a positive (true) but nor is false.

Anyways for now - all that does come to mind is simplify - one checkbox with instructions to only check (as a required) IF - both category questions are satisfied - in other words, state in text that these two PARAMETERS (checks AND cards) must be met for a submission - otherwise do not use form.

Of course they may be good reason you WANT them separated. Sorry no more help right now. Thanks, I resolved the issue and just went with using javascript

Solve : XIOSOFT Player autostarts.?

Answer»

Hello all,

First post, but I liked the website name, so I'll give it a go.

I'm trying to embed a PLAYER from XIOSOFT.com into a vtribes based (PRIVATE) members board.

It's audio only for now (and they had a $1 trial) but the quality and functionality are great.

Their help area is non-existant, so I am considering ALTERNATIVES, but none found as yet.

Now, the problem:

Everytime I login, the audio starts and downloads itself again.

No amount of cookie magic stops it and I just don't like the sound of my voice that much!

If ANYONE else has any suggestions, or is FAMILIAR with the player I would be grateful.

Solve : Attaching a PDF to my website?

Answer»

Hello,

I have RECENTLY CREATED a website starting with no knowledge of websites at all. I have put in text and pictures using HTML ok and put in other text and pictures using limited templates provided but I can't find any information on how to attach PDF so when the picture of the PDF is clicked on it opens up( or any other way). Can any one help please? Quote

PDF stands for Portable Document Format, a file format developed by the Adobe Corporation for creating documents with images and COMPLEX formatting. Its capabilities go well beyond those of HTML and it has become a de facto standard in many areas of document preparation and design. There are several reasons why you might want to display PDF files on your Website:

  • You already have a PDF file and do not want to convert it to HTML.
  • You need to use formatting that is more complex than HTML can handle.
  • You want the user to be able to download and distribute and/or print the file.
  • You want to discourage COPYING of your text and images.

Creating a PDF file requires special software such as Adobe Acrobat or one of several third party programs. The process usually involves creating the document in a word processor such as Microsoft Word and then using the PDF software to convert the document to a PDF file. Create a PDF file

Displaying PDF files is a much easier matter. All it takes is Adobe Reader software, available free from Adobe. When installed on a user's computer this software lets them view, print, and save, but not create or edit, PDF files. If you place a link to a PDF file on a Web page all the user has to do is click it and the file will be opened, using Acrobat Reader, in the browser.

If, however, the user does not have Adobe Reader, then clicking a link to a PDF file will only let them download the PDF file--not too useful! You should also offer them a link to download and install the Reader if they need to. The current link for this download is http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html. You can also get a cute graphic button for the download from the Adobe Website.
Thanks for your help, some useful considerations here.
I'm still not sure how to create the link to the PDF. When I link to a picture I use a hosted picture and when I link from a picture to a web page I use the page address.
So If I want to link from a picture to a PDF do I need to find somewhere that will 'host' the PDF (I have just seen free site which I think does this)? More info about how you create your web pages would be helpful. Are you using software installed on your computer to do this? What software? Or, are you doing creating your web pages through some web browser interface with a web hosting service?

Do you know how to upload files from your computer to your web server?

The HTML code would be in this format: name of document
Hello there,

Thank you for your response. I have web hosting with Easyspace and use their template package called Easysite Live wich I have downloaded . I can use this to add pictures and text or I have the option of putting in HTML. When finished I just press a publish site button to upload to my website.

The PDF that I would like to attach to the site is on my computer desktop (and in My Documents). If I use the HTML code you have kindly provided, inserting my webpage where it says 'my site' and the name of the PDF this doesn't work, it creates a link to Easyspace domain name search for that name, so it seems that I have missed something!
The PDF hosting site I saw was freepdfhosting.com. Excuse my like of knowledge in this area but is this required or am I on the totaly wrong track! .

Thank you I visited http://www.easyspace.com/ and saw no mention of Easysite Live and I don't know how Easysite Live works. But, I gather it's a program you install on your computer and then use to design your web pages and it provides templates you can use.

Inserting pictures on your pages and then "publishing" those pages with Easysite Live is one thing. Uploading a PDF file to the web server so that your llink to a PDF file works is another thing, and my guess is that it either can not be done with Easysite Live or, if it can, you just don't know how. Have you used their Control Panel? If not, I suggest you get familiar with it. It will probably have a File Manager feature which will allow you to upload files from your hard drive to the web server.Ahh! I understand better now.

I have used the control panel but not come accross this feature. I will have a look again and if I can't find anything I will enquire with Easyspace. I thought it was the same sort of of PROCEEDURE as putting on text or photos.

Thanks for taking the time to explain.
Thank you

Easyspace uploaded the PDF files for me and I have created links to them on my web site!

Solve : Please help me in choosing web hosting?

Answer»

Hi everyone,
I am sorry for possible offtopic, but I need your help in find new WEB hosting provider as SOON as possible, because my current host (bluehost.com) is kicking me off, they say 'your account is using a lot server resources', but my website gets only about 200 visitors per day and my disk usage is 1500 MB (maybe they do not like that?)

Anyway, what would be your recommendations for getting reliable web hosting? Where are you hosting your websites? Are you happy with your providers?

I am now checking http://www.hosting24.com/ - offer looks very nice, but is it real that they can provide UNLIMITED disk space?
I have CONTACTED them about this question and they say something that "These days 500GB disk drive costs only $30 per month, so if some day we will run out of disk space we will simply add new 500GB disk drive with almost zero costs and you can continue uploading without any problems".

What do you think about it? Maybe things have changed in last 4 years? With my current provider I get only 2GB of disk space for $10 per month..
Any ideas and SUGGESTIONS are much appreciated.
I've used www.lunarpages.com before and have been pleased with them. They have good prices and good offerings.1and1.com; they're pretty good.

Solve : New to web design??

Answer»

There are a lot of folks out there who want to start their own on line business, personal web ages, family reunion websites, etc., etc.

Problem is...they really don't know the first thing about web design...or what it is they need to do in order to GET their site started.

There are lots of places to go on the net where you can start a free website, but what type of support do you get?

Anyway...

Something you may want to check out: MyEvent

It comes with a 7-day trial (no credit card required) and a 100% IronClad Money back guarantee. After the trial period...for a nominal fee, you can continue with your website. It's not free, but worth looking into.

Personally...I currently use them for my high school reunion website. The site is awesome...and their support is "top notch".

So, for those of you wanting to start a website...why not check them out? What do you have to lose?Hey SAVIOUR,

I have looked at the site....I think it's a bit more expensive then what I would want....$9.95 for standard version where you can store 150 picture !!!......I have my own web site....EVEN though I'm not good at designing it, I went with a simple template for now and use FREE one line Album gallery "http://plogger.org/" , I have loaded it on to my shared server and it has almost unlimited photo capacity (I have 25 Gig web space)...so far have uploaded 2300 pictures.

In regards to Coffee Cup software, the tech support did not help me out very much I guess I have to eat the lost and deal with it

Try http://plogger.org/ if your web HOSTING server supports it.

CheersAt MyEvent, the cost for premium is $14.95 a month. Well worth the price. Unlimited photos and albums, hosting...and the ready-made TEMPLATES. Support, like I said is awesome at MyEvent. They reply to any email I send within 24 hours...good bunch of people. I have no qualms with them.

Sorry you had a bad experience with CoffeeCup...like I said there, as well...I've had no issues...and their software...at least to me...is top notch.

I want to learn web designing but i think it is hard...I can't eventually replace my old smilies to new ones.

Solve : Front Page Spacing to fit all Sized Windows?

Answer»

I'm working on a website using front page 2003. When I create the site in a full sized window, it looks GREAT. However when I open it online, if my browser is not full size, the words overlap the pictures. When viewed full size it looks FINE. How can I change it to be adaptable to a smaller window, without it all overlapping? Thanks! What technique did you USE for positioning text and pictures on your web pages? Did you use tables for this?

Can you post the link to your site?I used layers to insert pictures, and a few test boxes. I did create tables on some pages, and they are looking ok.

The site is:

www.bladeandedge.org/

Thanks!!!!I'm not FAMILIAR with using layers but SOMEONE else may have a suggestion on that subject. Obviously, one option would be to use tables instead of layers. I wouldn't use layers in a webpage unless you were coding it yourself. I don't think FrontPage would do it very well. Try switching it to tables.

Solve : What a www...?

Answer»

Ok.

This is it.

I am so annoyed by websites without a "www" at the front anymore, or with their own "www" that isn't a "www" e.g. "http://something.example.com" that i MUST know how they do this!

I know the end part (e.g. the .com) is a TLD, well whats the bit at the start called? I tried googling it, but it's hard to search for something when you don't know what it's called! I spent half an hour trying various things like "make your own www", "how to choose your www" and "customizing the www" when I decided I'd consult the experts... so here I am.

Thanks for any help! It's called a domain name.I found this on godaddy.com:

What is a second-level domain (SLD)?

The second-level domain is the readable part of the domain name that is LOCATED immediately to the left of the dot. For example, the second-level domain in coolexample.com is "coolexample." You define the second-level domain when you register most domains. However, there are some registries that restrict the second-level domain, such as .UK domains. Domains with this extension must include .CO. For example, coolexample.co.uk.

Second-level domains can be divided into further domain levels (for example, www.one.coolexample.com). These subdomains sometimes represent different computer servers within departments, but they can be created for any purpose. More than one second-level domain name can be used for the same IP address.
no but i'm talking about the "www" part. E.g. for invisionfree its

http://z1.invisionfree.com

Well where did the www go and how did they replace it with a z1?they didn't get rid of it, the actual address is probably

http://www.z1.invisionfree.com

but when you don't place the www, some browsers will automatically place it there before connecting.

try it- the above address works as well...

oh right. nifty.

Lol now i get it i think.

Well where did the www go and how did they replace it with a z1?
Just to perhaps slightly refine a point here, they did not replace www with z1. As BC_Programmer
illustrated, the site can be viewed at both http://z1.invisionfree.com and http://www.z1.invisionfree.com. As I previously posted: Quote from: soybean on July 02, 2008, 06:26:03 AM

These subdomains sometimes represent different computer servers within departments, but they can be created for any purpose. More than one second-level domain name can be used for the same IP address.
This is what you see with z1.invisionfree, a DIVIDING into further domain levels. Here's another example: http://support.dlink.com/faq/ Instead of all pages on D-Link's site beginning with www.dlink, they has a sub-domain for support. And, http://support.dlink.com/faq/ can also be displayed as http://www.support.dlink.com/faq/

The dropping of www and the fact that any sites will work either with a URL which includes www or without the www is, I BELIEVE, possible because the web server software allows this. It's called a subdomain. Like help.microsoft.com, msdn.microsoft.com, technet.microsoft.com, etc.

It depends on how the website is set up, whether or not you can still put a www in front of the subdomain. Most of the sites I've visited don't allow it. It will just give you a "404 - page not found". For example, if you type www.technet.microsoft.com, you won't go anywhere.

Surprisingly I didn't have this mentioned in our main URL definition either. So I've also updated this page to contain this INFORMATION for future users. If your website uses cPanel its easy to set up. Just click "Subdomains".

Solve : Upload from remote machine 2 remote machine?

Answer»

I was wondering how is it POSSIBLE to upload a file from a remote machine using a Remote machine, upload script and database? , i WANT to transfer files between WebserverA and WebserverB, WITHOUT using my system as the center of the connection.. they are both remote and i only have remote access to one of them.

download.com/installsoftwares.exe --> mywebserver.cc/chmodedFolder/installsoftwares.exeYes, this is possible providing you've GOT shell access on the machine. You could telnet (ALTHOUGH I'd recommend SSH) to webserverA and then at that server prompt use a file transfer utility such as FTP to send a file from webserverA to webserverB. Of course if the file was not on WebserverA you'd need to upload the file to it before being able to move it across.
