Solve : 404 errors on my page? |
Answer» I am making ANOTHER website, but the pages are having major problems! Fire away!Good (I'm suprised I remembered the question after watching Psycho and going ROFL at the "Shower Scene") My website, if you didn't notice, comes from a template. Could I take the images and layout of that template, and make it all from scratch on my own, without being sued? (As in taking the same images, colors, and table layout?) No. I think you'll find that's the point of the copyright notice. Actually, the chances of being sued are negligible, and I would take that site's ominous warnings of bots with a heavy pinch of salt. Nevertheless, you should understand the point of copyright. How would you feel if someone ripped off your website's design, after you'd spent weeks getting it just right? Exactly. What if I just took the layout, and the colors? I could skip the pictures, and other buttons. Aha, that's the $64,000,000 question. The DIFFERENCE between inspiration and palgiarism is very subtle. It is a question of degree, but it is impossible to give a black and white answer. But see what I said above about the chances of being sued. Ok, thanks Rob I found another template without a content file, and it works much better this way |

Solve : Apache Server passwording? |
Answer» I wan't to put a password on to access my site. are files that have no file extension. I'm lost how can they have no filename? I can't have a file with just an extension, and no name could I? :-? I have my files although they have a filename so thats probably why they are not working. My "password.htaccess" is at C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/htdocs/password.htaccess, and consists of Code: [Select]AuthName "GNOMENET Server" AuthType Basic AuthUserFile "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/bin/greengnome.htpasswd" Require valid-user My "greengnome.htpasswd" is located at "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/bin/greengnome.htpasswd" and has Code: [Select]greengnome:$apr1$um1.....$DNK4zDGnCh2KmtHhA09IO1 Even though I'm using Windows I should still have forward slashes, correct? What am I doing wrong? :-? How do I eliminate the filenames?I can't see anything wrong with what you have. However, it may be that you haven't configured Apache to look for the htaccess file. I can't have a file with just an extension, and no name could I? The idea of name+extension isn't quite accurate anyhoo. Really, a filename includes the file extension. Remember, too, that all this COMES from Unix land, where extensions aren't so heavily relied upon. In Unix, a filename that begins with a dot means that the file is (usually) hidden. Windows doesn't like filenames that begin with a dot -although it is POSSIBLE to do. I save all confusion by CALLING my files: htaccess.conf Here's the meat. You may have neglected to put the name you have chosen for your access file into the httpd.conf (the Apache config file) AccessFileName password.htaccess Probably best to change this name to something else anyway. I see that you understood .htaccess to be the extension (for a file with no name !). It is just a filename. For understandability, perhaps use something like mine.. AccessFileName htaccess.conf Ugh, it's still not working. :-? |

Solve : frontpage problem? |
Answer» I have created thumbnails of my pictures to help with download time. I have one particular picture that has been auto thumbnailed that is giving me a problem. I can display the photo in preview mode but once I save the file and preview it again the picture is not displayed unless I click the "click photo to enlarge box" Any suggestions. Thanks. What version of FrontPage? What software are you using to create the thumbnails? In other WORDS, what do you mean by "auto thumbnailed"? Did you use exactly the same technique to create all your thumbnails? Are you sure you've saved the problem thumbnail in the same place as the other ones? 2003. I using frontpage to create the thumbnail by going to Tools and clicking Auto Thumbnail. All thumbnails have been created the same way and placed in the same FOLDER. I have FrontPage 2000. I had not used the thumbnail feature but just TRIED it now. I see that when I insert a picture, make a thumbnail and then save the file, the original image and the thumbnail are both added to the files in the folder containing the web page files. Do you see both image files for the problem picture in the folder containing your web page files? |

Solve : I'm in Mexico; can't access some U.S. sites? |
Answer» I've checked. It's not just my computer, not just my internet connection. The error message I get various error messages, including "Safari cannot find the server" when I go to some sites that are functioning perfectly in the U.S. I even have trouble with Craigslist. An ad for a house will appear but the photo boxes are blank. Not so in the States. On the other HAND, items removed from YOUTUBE in the States can still be seen here. I am in Puerto Escondido and have broadband internet. How and why do these things happen?Since it's not just your computer and your Internet connection, I'd suspect governmental control as the culprit here. When you say "not just my internet connection", do you mean this happens with other ISPs in Mexico also? If so, again, maybe the Mexican government is mimicking the CHINESE government and blocking some stuff.No. It's not government censorship. Some real estate web sites get through and others don't. I can get KQED but I can't get WNYC (I used to be able to get it.) I can get NPR and the BBC. I'm not even sure if the PROBLEM extends through all of Mexico. I think it must have something to do with the servers. Some mysterious incompatability with the TelMex service in my area. |

Answer» yeah, they do, i plan to have a quad monitor system to start when i build my next computer. OLD CRT's are inexpensive, sometimes alittle rough around the edges, but they work fine, which is all i care about Quote You could PUT a COUPLE monitors in that car too. how about i drop a few monitors on your head? i have asked you many times not to bother me, why dont you listen? i belive that DROPPING a few heavy CRT monitors on your head would either kill you, or knock some sense into you, either option SOUNDS good to me |

Solve : How to use an old computer as an HTTP server? |
Answer» I'm trying to use my old Pentium III as a web server to HOST my own *.com website. Can anyone help me with this? It only has 64MB of RAM. I would much prefer a Linux server to a Windows one. I can't afford to spend $1000 on an OS and another $500 on making the PC fast enough to run it!That's not much RAM to work with, but you could do this with Slackware or Vector. You will be limited in that Gnome or KDE will not be TOLERABLE, so you will either have to go for a low horsepower Windows Manager (both have them) or use straight command line. With this limited amount of RAM, only the dullest window managers are likely to work satisfactorily... If it's just a web server you'll be running I would go for a text-only installation. Something LIKE CentOS, White Box Linux or TinySofa. You can still get a GUI interface to the configuration of these SERVERS, by VIRTUE of Webmin.IM just going to add to this instead of making a new thread, I've never tried linux and I'd like to try makeing my own server, The computer I want to use the specs are in my sig. Now I was wondering Whats the best linux for this and im pretty sure Id be able to dual boot between the server and XP right? |

Solve : XML learning experience a little painful? |
Answer» OK, I was going to include this in my RPG thread, but I'm not planning on using XML in my game (though I could if I needed to). So it doesn't belong in that thread. Besides, blending the topics of PHP and XML would be a disaster - PHP's confusing enough as is. Fun facts Simple, but I got sick of Hello World! every time I learned something new. Anyway, the output of http://127.0.0.1/test.xml: Quote <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" ?> Note the missing "" line in the online version, which renders fine in the file version. What causes this, and how may I get around it?Looks to me like your Apache installation isn't set up with knowledge of XML as a MIME type. Don't know where the config is on a Win install, so I may have to get back to you.Whoa, I found it and fixed it! I went to the conf folder with the intent of editing the httpd.conf file. However, I saw the file mime.types and edited it. I saw that pages that were html/htm had a double-tab, then the extension, like: Quote text/html html htm[/pre] but the xml one was blank. I double-tabbed over, typed "xml" and hit save. Now, I get this: Not very complicated, but it IS exactly what I wanted. I think I got lucky on this one. [edit]And I now have a use for IE: It's the only browser that shows XML code without clicking "View Source". [/edit]Yep, well done - that's the fix. I haven't investigated XML much beyond the theory, for the very reason you outline: lack of support/adoption. HTML+CSS+PHP+MySQL WORKS just fine for me at the moment.IMHO, XML would be good for PIECES of pages that require data storage, but it's not meant to be used to format an entire page. You could use it, for example, as a Web-based database. Of course, it shouldn't be used as the only content in a page. ***WARNING: IGNORE THE POST BELOW, IT'S THE RAMBLINGS OF A GUY WITH TOO MUCH TIME ON HIS HANDS*** The W3C is nice enough to provide a few ways to format XML. It suggests: CSS - I didn't know this, but you can actually fomat XML with Cascading Style Sheets. Curious. The W3C insists, however, that it is NOT the future of formatting XML. Funny, that - it's a way to bypass the problems encountered by using the future of XML parsing. JavaScript - The W3C doesn't provide an example, just mentions in an esoteric passage in their XML tuts that it's possible. Finally, it's possible, they say, to use the tag in an HTML. That's odd, the strangest application I've seen for it yet. I don't know what kind of support browsers offer. There are apparently multiple methods of synchronizing HTML with XML. Sorry if you already know this, but you said you didn't investigate it, so I thought I'd let you know just in case. [edit]I tested the parsing ability of FireFox 1.5, Opera 8.52, Internet Explorer 6.0, Netscape 8.1 and Mozilla 1.7.12. Here are the results: FireFox - parsed my XML correctly. Opera - was a total mess. Internet Explorer - parsed correctly. Mozilla - parsed correctly. Netscape - parsed correctly. (X)HTML appeared fine on 4 out of 5 major browsers tested. Mind, these are the latest versions, so I don't know about older ones. But this is a pretty good score. And if you don't rely on (H)XTML for the whole page, it should work for all of them.[/edit] [edit]I removed the XSL stylesheet and its reference in the XML file for testing on showing code. Same browsers tested. Results: FireFox - upon realizing that there was no stylesheet, showed the document tree as expected. It gave a message at the top specifying that it couldn't find a XSL page and would show the tree. Opera - again, total mess. Internet Explorer - showed document tree. Mozilla - showed document tree. Same message as FireFox. Netscape - showed document tree. Same message as FireFox and Mozilla. XML has FAIRLY good support nowadays - it's Opera that's falling behind the curve.[/edit] |

Solve : Please Help!! I can't upload my website? |
Answer» HELP!!!! I am having serious problems with getting my webpages online!! I don't know what to do, I am not good at this stuff at all!! I feel like a real dummy... Okay, so I have already purchased my domain name, my web host and paid to have my catalog uploaded to the subdomain, that is all running smoothly. I also have created all the other webpages (homepage, contact page, about us page, etc...) and I have uploaded them to the ftp. address. But they are not showing up on the http://www. address. I don't get it So, I am just looking for someone who can help me to get my site online. Do you know where I can pay for this TYPE of service (not too expensive please) Or am I just MISSING some small stupid piece to this puzzle which can be done easily myself? I have tried finding the information, but unfortunately nothing makes sense to me, I am at my wit's end and I just want the site to be online!! Please RESPOND!! I welcome any help or info I can get!!! Thank you in advance for your RESPONSES!! ftp://ftp.majickalshoppe.com That is the link to the ftp. site!!!!This is hard to explain, but I'll try... For example, my site address is: www.gamesfyi.2ya.com ... However, to view a certain page, such as the home page, I would need to go to: www.atlantawebsiteproductions.com/gamesfyi/home.php ... So you might need to do something like that... Here's what to do... Go into your SERVER.. Do you see a file that you have uploaded? I want you to right-click on it, and select properties... Look at "path". That will show you the EXACT location of the file... Let me know what happens... FlameGo into your server and look for the public_html folder. That's where you should place your files. Or a main folder. (Not all sites have public_html as their main folder ) FlameHi, Had the same problem had to change my Homepage name to Index or Home as this is the one that my ftp recognised.i am also having problems that when i upload my webpage it will not show the pictures, i just get a white box with a red cross in the corner, any ideas?. thanks PakmacYour links are probably still pointingtoyour hard drive. Links must be relative, not absolute. What program are you using to upload? You aren't uploading each picture yourself over FTP are you? Solve : Code isn't functioning correctly...? |
Answer» Ok, I am designing a cheap website for a CLASS, and I entered the code... For some reason, my third and second pictures are right next to each other on the page, whereas the first and second are on top of each other. I used the same basic code with only a few changes in what specifically was being displayed, and everything LOOKS like it should be the same, but maybe i just need a fresh set of EYES to look at this... can anyone TELL me what's wrong? Also, I have a lot of problems with anchors... do I have the a hrefs right, or should they be reversed with the a names? Also, do I need the #s in the hrefs? Welcome. Below you will see a list of my friends. Click on the links below each My green buddie[/url] My ugly buddie[/url] <p><a name="Dwarf.jpg"><img src="dwarf.jpg" width="200" height="200>[/url] As you can see, his nose operation didn't go so well.</p> <p><a name="infernal.jpg"><img src="infernal.jpg" width="200" height="200">[/url] hello</p> my problem is here - this picture and the last one are right next to each other, when i WANT them the one called infernal to be below the one called dwarf. My HTML book does not show the #s in the hrefs. To get control over the positioning of your images, I suggest you use tables. Here's a reference: http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_tables.aspYou should use framesets if you want to sort pictures. Thanks for that refrence. Solve : Pros and cons of using my PC as a server?? |
Answer» I tried checking out the thread about using your PC as a server. But All I got was this... The board field does not accept / in the query string So... I am posting a new topic on the same subject. Sorry, but if these questions were answered I was not able to see. My Questions: What are the PROS and cons of using my PC as a server? How would I go about using my PC as a server? Thank you, GeorgeProbably the biggest con is the AMOUNT of RAM your pc can store unless its got 3gb or something. The Pros, well cheaper then hired hosting The CONI, cheaper, well on a long termine, you wil need a pc that is 24/7 online, and likely a good (read: expensive) one too...Erm... perhaps we should first establish what the OP means by "server"? Do you mean a web server? File and print server? Application server? Terminal (thin client) server? Time server? DATABASE server? Parallellism server? FTP server? Tennis server? Or what? I think it's web server, because he posts it in WEBdesign, but actuallly, now you say it, it is quite unclearAssuming it's a web server, then expense is not necessarily an issue. An old Pentium-100 can do the job; the more memory and hard drive space the better. Install a bare, EFFICIENT Linux distribution with no desktop etc, and add Appache. Hey presto, one competent fast world-class web server. I was running an old Linux server on something like an AMD K2-450 for years until the fan failed and a hard drive died. That provided web, file and print, time and database service effortlessly. |

Solve : PHP: Fwrite? |
Answer» Hi, Currently your script won't actually do anything other than set two variables. You're missing the fopen()/fwrite() statements. Use file_exists() to discover if the file exists. Recommend you read through the whole Filesystem section of the PHP manual. see BOLT : How to make one? Take it like an web poll service : 1) you need to register, your username and password are stored in the database 2) when you clicked on a link, you get a poll, in for instance 5 hours. 3) the poll is named after the names in 2 lists : in the first list is - 1,2,3,4,... - and in the second - a,b,c,d,... - 4) If the file 1a already exist, the poll is named after 1b, till z, than 2a, ... ect. 5) you can find the poll on the login screen 6) The poll has diferent OPTIONS, but you can't change them. the options are for instance Yes, No and no opinion. 7) if selected No opinion, nothing happens. if selected Yes or No, at 24 o'clock the program wirtes in the poll file, in this example, this is 1a. in the file is Yes: number of votes - No: number of votes if selected Yes : in the file yes +1 can you make a script please : PS : server is running PHP 4 making such script cost hours and hours of thime. You will need a mysql database too. Can you work with that? I got a good login script from rob, a few topics ago, i'll search the link. But I think you should learn a bit php first. I don't really understand what you want but clearly, you want a huge thing, but you can't write one line of it... that's a bit difficult... Storing passwords in text files in your web root is of course a very bad idea. Anyone can guess the filename, point their web browser at it and retrieve the password. Like rob said, this is a very bad idea. A half year ago I got this idea to, because doing things with a textfile is very easy, but certainly unsafe!I'll GO and learn first Quote I'll go and learn first good link: http://www.w3schools.com/ good luck Quote QuoteI'll go and learn first idd, good site |

Solve : Linking to an Video files? |
Answer» There is more to that Link to an video or audio files so the files open in a new browser or there media playerYou may like to use the >Embedded Media HTML Generator< Quote How to create rating? That's a fairly complicated thing to do. You definitely would require a database backend. Would you track every vote? Or every vote that comes from a unique IP address? Or have a particular user-based SYSTEM so that only votes from registered users are counted? Etc. It's a big programming job - possibly four or five days worth of solid coding.OK thank so: >Embedded Media HTML Generator< Would open the video in a new browser or their media player? I dont want to embed the video in a browser. Thank YouA link like <a href='http://your.domain.com/videoname.rm' target='_blank'>click here[/url] should launch the video in the relevant program. That does depend on the configuration of the user's browser however. Which browser are you using?IE 6.0 & Mozilla Firefox I yes i have try that code it STILL making the user to download Embedded Media HTML Generator it saying that i have to give a server name which i ant got one yet and does Embedded mean having a video open in the browser it self which i dont want it to do. The toturial i have come across doesnt work. I want all user to view my video in a media player or anykind of player or browser Please help me Robpomeroy Thank youI'm AFRAID you cannot force programs to run on a user's PC. Either video is embedded, or you have to let their browser handle the file as it chooses. It will only load up an external program if (a) it KNOWS what kind of a file it's dealing with and (b) it is configured to run the corresponding program automatically. You do not, as web designer, have control over that. What you can do, is use the embedded method, but embed the video into a separate popup window.Yeah i guess that is the only way Thanks |

Solve : Redirect service? |
Answer» If you look at [link=http://gare.nl]this[/link] - dutch - site, you can see a rederect service. I thought it was complicated, but I heard from someone the whole site is only 7 files. Does anyone knows how to make such service? I don't speak Dutch. What does it do? I'll try to explain as good as possible, but you know, my english is bad, terrible. Strange, but the service doesn't work at this moment, but I'll explain. These are the possibilities of the site:
The register function, has the following abbility's: Asking your disired subdomain* , asking your name, asking your email) If you have registered (and the subdomain* is avaible) SEND an e-mail to the e-mail adres, and there you need to active (so you are sure that the email exist) the abbility to check if the subdomain is allready in use (and if it is, the abillity to check who registered it (show the name & email that you typed while registering the abbility to show the last 5 registerd subdomains* *= NOTE: by subdomain I DON'T mean: yourchosendomain.blackberry.com but I DO MEAN blackberry.com/your chosen domain, I know subdomain isn't the right therm for it, but I don't know an other way to say it right.... I know this looks a really complicated system (all that text) but actually it's just a few boxes and a small system. I don't need other special things, no hard things (like an myqsl data base, because I know this is way to much work) so PERHAPS anyone can help me with this one, pleas... Although at the front, this looks quite simple, the PROGRAMMING behind it is not so simple. If a client wished me to build such a system, I would estimate 3-5 days of coding and testing, for which I would charge over £1000 (US$1,900). You will need a database for this, since you will be storing data - even if it's only in flat files. Using a real database would make perfect sense here, and MySQL would be my choice. I would say this sounds like a FAIRLY ambitious project for you; I'm willing to help with the concepts and provide pointers for implementation, but I think you'll have to do the learning/work. Unless you particularly want to pay me. Why you will need a database, you can store anything in a .txt file?Yes, but what will you be storing in that text file? Data. Don't shy away from databases - they provide a MUCH more efficient (up to several orders of magnitude) method of handling and accessing data. If a system like this were to become large and you were still using text files, it would grind to a halt. With MySQL however, you could access and maintain all the data in less than a fraction of a second. The other advantage of using a real database is that it encourages you to look at your data in a particular way: it creates consistency, logical development and implementation, and it has a very high geek factor!!! MySQL is not that scary. There are plenty of tutorials about. You wouldn't regret learning. |

Solve : Adobe Products VS. Jasc Paint Shop Pro/Corel? |
Answer» I'm CURRENTLY using JASC Paint Shop Pro 10.01/X and Corel Draw. I've played around a little with Adobe Photoshop and Elements (forgot what VERSION.), and I found that Adobe had more capabilities, but crashed a lot and adding effects was slow going. I like PSP, because it's cheaper and doesn't crash on me too much. Which way should I GO, Adobe or Jasc? Also, any idea how much either product will slow down an XP system? |

Solve : Running and exe within a web page? |
Answer» Hey, I've been making a web page and I found a higher attractiveness to customers when they can play a game right on screen (like a FLASH game) rather than downloading a zip file than running from there. The only problem is.....I don't know a way to RUN an exe program within a small square of space. All the games are compiled into an exe which is what is causing me problems. Another OPTION I had was creating an exploit to run the exe in the background when a user clicks a link to play. But that could be abused and is probably the reason why many browsers block things like that. Is there anyway that I can MAKE an exe game WORK like a flash game? |

Solve : Cross-browser trouble? |
Answer» Ack. The big problem of my time is STILL getting pages to work across browsers. div.nav { border-top-style: none; border-right-style: solid; border-left-style: none; border-right-color: black; My site in PROGRESS validates against transitional XHTML 1.0 and CSS standards. Great! BUT... guess which highly popular browser doesn't support the CSS "position" attribute? I dunno about IE 7, but IE 6 sure as *censored* doesn't! In FireFox, Netscape, and OPERA, I get my NAV bar to appear as normal. However, if I attempt to load the page in IE, it has the NAV bar in the correct position, but the content is below the NAV bar, and the NAV bar doesn't move with the page! Is there any way to make this work in all browsers, that is not deprecated by the W3C?? Or will I just have to write code to display a warning in IE only?position is understood by IE6. Different browsers interpret the box model slightly DIFFERENTLY however. Floats can be particularly troublesome. Cross-browser incompatibility is the main reason I still use tables for LAYOUT; most browsers do almost exactly the same thing with them. If position: fixed isn't working for you, try position: absolute (generally more efficient). position: relative is also useful, but generally only does what you expect it to, if you place it within a div that has position: absolute (not necessarily with any other style attributes SET). Mind blowing. If you want to get your head around CSS and the way support for it is broken on various browsers, you probably will want to spend a lot of time on >Stu Nicholls' site<. Personally I can't be bothered because tables do what I need when CSS lets me down. |
