Solve : 404 errors on my page?

Answer»

I am making ANOTHER website, but the pages are having major problems!
CHECK it out:
http://www.jessez.mbhosting.com/zylstra/

I don't know why I am getting the page not found errors.

If anyone knows of any good, free, AD free, templates, please tell me.Your content.html page appears to be missing.  Only someone with access to your server/control panel can really comment on that.

I recommend not using IFRAMEs, because you will run into major cross-browser compatibility issues.  You've made steps with PHP, so why not use include() instead?Because I don't have the slightest idea what IFRAMES or include() are

I think I will make the template again, instead of using the downloaded ONE. (Oh goodness, legal issues)

Rob:
Since your a lawyer, mind answering a question for me?Fire away! Quote

Fire away!
Good (I'm suprised I remembered the question after watching Psycho and going ROFL at the "Shower Scene")

My website, if you didn't notice, comes from a template.
Could I take the images and layout of that template, and make it all from scratch on my own, without being sued?

(As in taking the same images, colors, and table layout?)
No.  I think you'll find that's the point of the copyright notice.

Actually, the chances of being sued are negligible, and I would take that site's ominous warnings of bots with a heavy pinch of salt.  Nevertheless, you should understand the point of copyright.  How would you feel if someone ripped off your website's design, after you'd spent weeks getting it just right?

Exactly.What if I just took the layout, and the colors?
I could skip the pictures, and other buttons.
Aha, that's the $64,000,000 question.  The DIFFERENCE between inspiration and palgiarism is very subtle.  It is a question of degree, but it is impossible to give a black and white answer.  But see what I said above about the chances of being sued.  Ok, thanks Rob

I found another template without a content file, and it works much better this way

Solve : Apache Server passwording?

Answer»

I wan't to put a password on to access my site.

I've been looking around and have found some articles; http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/howto/auth.html
and http://archives.hwg.org/hwg-servers/[email protected]

Neither of which I could understand very WELL...  :-/

What kind of pathname is /usr/local/apache/passwd/ ?
It doesn't look anything like my file structure for apache; C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache2\

EDIT 1: Is the aforementioned pathname assuming the beginning of the pathname?
Example -- C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache2\\\ ?  :-?

If so I can't find folders like /usr/local/apache/passwd/ anywhere...That's a Unix/Linux path you're looking at.  I have no experience of setting Apache up on Windows, but I can recommend that you look for Windows-specific documentation when you're searching.

Access can be controlled by means of .htaccess and .htpasswd files.  Read the official documentation about those.Thanks.

No wonder I couldn't understand those paths. I'll go find for some Windows articles.I'm running Apache on Windows (though I haven't done much with the server itself for a while).

Here are a couple of typical paths:

AuthUserFile  "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/passwd/passwords"
AuthGroupFile "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/passwd/groups"

passwords and groups are files that have no file extension.

Note that forward slashes are still used in htaccess, even on Windows.

However, I believe the paths and filenames are all conventional. Ultimately, you could specify other paths or filenames.

PS The password utility is here:

C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache2\bin\htpasswd.exe Quote

are files that have no file extension.

I'm lost how can they have no filename? I can't have a file with just an extension, and no name could I?  :-?

I have my files although they have a filename so thats probably why they are not working.

My "password.htaccess" is at C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/htdocs/password.htaccess, and consists of

Code: [Select]AuthName "GNOMENET Server"
AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/bin/greengnome.htpasswd"
Require valid-user
My "greengnome.htpasswd" is located at "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/bin/greengnome.htpasswd" and has

Code: [Select]greengnome:$apr1$um1.....$DNK4zDGnCh2KmtHhA09IO1
Even though I'm using Windows I should still have forward slashes, correct?

What am I doing wrong?  :-?

How do I eliminate the filenames?I can't see anything wrong with what you have.
However, it may be that you haven't configured Apache to look for the htaccess file.

I can't have a file with just an extension, and no name could I?

The idea of name+extension isn't quite accurate anyhoo. Really, a filename includes the file extension.

Remember, too, that all this COMES from Unix land, where extensions aren't so heavily relied upon.  In Unix, a filename that begins with a dot means that the file is (usually) hidden.

Windows doesn't like filenames that begin with a dot -although it is POSSIBLE to do. I save all confusion by CALLING my files: htaccess.conf

Here's the meat. You may have neglected to put the name you have chosen for your access file into the httpd.conf (the Apache config file)

AccessFileName password.htaccess

Probably best to change this name to something else anyway. I see that you understood .htaccess to be the extension (for a file with no name !). It is just a filename. For understandability, perhaps use something like mine..

AccessFileName htaccess.conf

Ugh, it's still not working.  :-?

Solve : Server error ??

Answer»

useing 'Front Page' 2002 free host = Netfirms.
I found a site that allows you to download short music loops in wav/mp3/flash format http://www.flashkit.com/loops/Easy_Listening/Classical/_A_Kn-Edgen-6842/index.php

I save them in 'wav', .. then I insert them into my perdonal web, but when I save it to the page it comes up 'Server Error'.
What does this mean, bearing in mind the music works in the BROWSER i.e. at least it works on my pc.

Thanks in advance..  Tally

ps. wonder if the wav file works on other puters.?  will GIVE url if neededFirst point: FrontPage?  Yuck.  Try NVu.

Second point: where are you saving these wav files to?  Have you uploaded them to your host?  How are you inserting them?  What HTML code are you using?  If you're unsure, post a link to the page you've created.well rob.. i'm used to f/page for a start..
I save the music file as wav.. and put it in my web folder,.. then insert a b/g sound.. I think 'Embed' tag.
as far as uploading to host goes.. I thought the host would either accept or not automatically..??Presumably the "web folder" is something provided by FrontPage to disguise the fact that it is creating an FTP or WebDAV transfer?  You would get more meaningful error messages using a real FTP client like FTPSurfer.  Unfortunately it's difficult to guess at what FrontPage means by "server error", if that's where you're seeing the error message.  Possibly the WAV file is too large and exceeds your storage/upload allocation with your host?

My dislike of FrontPage is purely web developer snobbery I'm afraid.  If it works for you that's fine.  It just produces horrendous code that makes it hard to work with using anything other than FrontPage.

PS  Links to all the free software I refer to are in the software FAQ - see my signature.thanks for that rob,.. was the alignment ok.. ?Sorry, I don't know what you mean.I meant in general,. the alignment of text links images (uniform) etc !! only
I tried it on my pals lap-top.. and it was different than my pc screen..
I ALWAYS 'Center' the alignment,.. or do you recomend default settings ?

                   ty .. Tally
Hmm...  That's a dangerous question to ask!  My advice is to look at some other websites - good quality websites - and see how they arrange pages and content.  Then emulate one you like the most.  In practice, websites where the text is all centred, are going to look rather untidy.  An alternative is to use a DIV ELEMENT, set its size, place all your text in that (left aligned or justified) and centre that.  Try resizing your browser window, and see how your site looks at different sizes (remember people will have different screen resolutions).

Click on my signature logo to see how I have laid out my website.  It's by no means an excellent site, but I think it's tidy.thanks for that rob,.. yes yours is very tidy

Solve : Error: the HTML may not contain a "textarea&q?

Answer»

I have recently created a new website. I would LIKE to create a text area with a scrollbar (like the one i am currently typing in), but my website host will not allow it. Each text area tag that I ATTEMPT to INSERT into the HTML code box brings up an  error saying : "Error: the HTML may not contain a "textarea" tag. "
I know that there has to be a way around this, because sites that also use the free website host "Piczo" have text boxes on their sites. Is there another code that I may use that does not contain a "text area" tag?
Stick to only one POST

Solve : frontpage problem?

Answer»

I have created thumbnails of my pictures to help with download time.  I have one particular picture that has been auto thumbnailed that is giving me a problem.  I can display the photo in preview mode but once I save the file and preview it again the picture is not displayed unless I click the "click photo to enlarge box"  Any suggestions.  Thanks.What version of FrontPage?  What software are you using to create the thumbnails?  In other WORDS, what do you mean by "auto thumbnailed"?  Did you use exactly the same technique to create all your thumbnails?  Are you sure you've saved the problem thumbnail in the same place as the other ones?  2003.  I using frontpage to create the thumbnail by going to Tools and clicking Auto Thumbnail.  All thumbnails have been created the same way and placed in the same FOLDER.  I have FrontPage 2000.  I had not used the thumbnail feature but just TRIED it now.  I see that when I insert a picture, make a thumbnail and then save the file, the original image and the thumbnail are both added to the files in the folder containing the web page files.  Do you see both image files for the problem picture in the folder containing your web page files?

Try opening them the problem thumbnail and a non-problem thumbnail in PAINT.  Do they both open OK?

Solve : I'm in Mexico; can't access some U.S. sites?

Answer»

I've checked. It's not just my computer, not just my internet connection. The error message I get various error messages, including "Safari cannot find the server" when I go to some sites that are functioning perfectly in the U.S. I even have trouble with Craigslist. An ad for a house will appear but the photo boxes are blank. Not so in the States. On the other HAND, items removed from YOUTUBE in the States can still be seen here. I am in Puerto Escondido and have broadband internet. How and why do these things happen?Since it's not just your computer and your Internet connection, I'd suspect governmental control as the culprit here.  When you say "not just my internet connection", do you mean this happens with other ISPs in Mexico also?  If so, again, maybe the Mexican government is mimicking the CHINESE government and blocking some stuff.No. It's not government censorship. Some real estate web sites get through and others don't. I can get KQED but I can't get WNYC (I used to be able to get it.) I can get NPR and the BBC. I'm not even sure if the PROBLEM extends through all of Mexico. I think it must have something to do with the servers. Some mysterious incompatability with the TelMex service in my area.

I wonder if other people have observed this phenomenon in other parts of the world.contact your isp and ask them in the meantime USE proxy sites like vtunnel.com kproxy.com etc

proxy.org as a list of proxies you can try

I made it this morning!    You like?  What I did was use a special font called tribal Two, and them j=use bevel and emboss. You just PLAY around with the soften controls until you get your desired results. About an 8 I used... Then, select/ACTIVATE both contour and texture. Select any texture that you like... Also activate outer shadow, and play around a bit. Lighten your text a bit and there you go!    (You will need to download this font... If you want it, let me know and I'll give you the URL    )

Solve : Front Page 2000 Posting?

Answer»

I have Frontpage 2000.   I created a site and when I post it to my URL it doesn't work! Why?  :-/
- I USED the posing icon provided
- I also used FTP-Pro that I have been using for years
But this time using FRONT page 2000 it can't be viewed.   Has this site worked in the past or is it a new site?  Have you used the host service you're using for this site in the past or is it a new HOSTING account?

You've previously used FTP-Pro to upload web pages to web/host server, right?  Were those web pages created with FrontPage?  Are you sure you're uploading to the right directory?  Does the hosting service have FrontPage extensions INSTALLED?...and what filename have you used for your home page?  What, if any, errors are you seeing?

Solve : Frontpage question re Cell and Table backgrounds.?

Answer»

For some odd reason when I right click in a cell or table the options for borders and BACKGROUND PICTURES are unavailable. They are there but they aren't usable.

This is on any web page I try and make so I think its the prog' and I've tried repairing it to no avail.

I'm USING FP XP Office Pro.

There maybe a SOLUTION staring me in the face but I can't see the wood for the trees right now.

Any ideas?Have u tried to left click?lead_sharp......   Odd , if you click on a cell in your webpage .........then choose cell properties .........the options you are looking for should be there and active.

You could PUT a COUPLE monitors in that car too.

how about i drop a few monitors on your head? i have asked you many times not to bother me, why dont you listen? i belive that DROPPING a few heavy CRT monitors on your head would either kill you, or knock some sense into you, either option SOUNDS good to me

Solve : How to use an old computer as an HTTP server?

Answer»

I'm trying to use my old Pentium III as a web server to HOST my own *.com website. Can anyone help me with this? It only has 64MB of RAM. I would much prefer a Linux server to a Windows one. I can't afford to spend $1000 on an OS and another $500 on making the PC fast enough to run it!That's not much RAM to work with, but you could do this with Slackware or Vector. You will be limited in that Gnome or KDE will not be TOLERABLE, so you will either have to go for a low horsepower Windows Manager (both have them) or use straight command line.With this limited amount of RAM, only the dullest window managers are likely to work satisfactorily...  If it's just a web server you'll be running I would go for a text-only installation.  Something LIKE CentOS, White Box Linux or TinySofa.  You can still get a GUI interface to the configuration of these SERVERS, by VIRTUE of Webmin.IM just going to add to this instead of making a new thread, I've never tried linux and I'd like to try makeing my own server, The computer I want to use the specs are in my sig. Now I was wondering Whats the best linux for this and im pretty sure Id be able to dual boot between the server and XP right?
Better to start another thread, Mike.ok

Solve : XML learning experience a little painful?

Answer»

OK, I was going to include this in my RPG thread, but I'm not planning on using XML in my game (though I could if I needed to). So it doesn't belong in that thread. Besides, blending the topics of PHP and XML would be a disaster - PHP's confusing enough as is.

OK, I made a working XML and XLS. I know this because when I open the XML file in IE6, it displays as it should - an (X)HTML. However, when I view it on my server, I see the code - and the line pointing to the XLS is missing on the display.

The code for the XML and XLS:

Code: [Select]<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<?xml-stylesheet type="text/XSL" href="test.xsl"?>
<document>
<facts>
<funfact>The Grand Canyon is the deepest canyon on land.</funfact>
<states>There are 50 states.</states>
</facts>
</document>
Code: [Select]<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0"
xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">
<xsl:template match="/">
<html>
<body>
<p>Fun facts</p>
<xsl:for-each select="document/facts">
<p><xsl:value-of select="funfact"/></p>
<p><xsl:value-of select="states"/></p>
</xsl:for-each>
</body>
</html>
</xsl:template>
</xsl:stylesheet>
The output viewing as C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache2\htdocs\test.xml:

Quote

Fun facts

The Grand Canyon is the deepest canyon on land.

There are 50 states.

Simple, but I got sick of Hello World! every time I learned something new.

Anyway, the output of http://127.0.0.1/test.xml:

  Quote
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" ?>
- <document>
  <funfact>The Grand Canyon is the deepest canyon on land.</funfact>
  <states>There are 50 states.</states>
  </document>

Note the missing "" line in the online version, which renders fine in the file version. What causes this, and how may I get around it?Looks to me like your Apache installation isn't set up with knowledge of XML as a MIME type.  Don't know where the config is on a Win install, so I may have to get back to you.Whoa, I found it and fixed it!

I went to the conf folder with the intent of editing the httpd.conf file. However,  I saw the file mime.types and edited it. I saw that pages that were html/htm had a double-tab, then the extension, like:

Quote
text/html                  html htm
text/parityfec
text/plain                  asc txt
text/prs.lines.tag
text/rfc822-headers
text/richtext                  rtx
[/pre]

but the xml one was blank. I double-tabbed over, typed "xml" and hit save. Now, I get this:

Not very complicated, but it IS exactly what I wanted. I think I got lucky on this one.

[edit]And I now have a use for IE: It's the only browser that shows XML code without clicking "View Source". [/edit]Yep, well done - that's the fix.

I haven't investigated XML much beyond the theory, for the very reason you outline: lack of support/adoption.  HTML+CSS+PHP+MySQL WORKS just fine for me at the moment.IMHO, XML would be good for PIECES of pages that require data storage, but it's not meant to be used to format an entire page. You could use it, for example, as a Web-based database. Of course, it shouldn't be used as the only content in a page.

***WARNING: IGNORE THE POST BELOW, IT'S THE RAMBLINGS OF A GUY WITH TOO MUCH TIME ON HIS HANDS***

The W3C is nice enough to provide a few ways to format XML. It suggests:

CSS - I didn't know this, but you can actually fomat XML with Cascading Style Sheets. Curious. The W3C insists, however, that it is NOT the future of formatting XML. Funny, that - it's a way to bypass the problems encountered by using the future of XML parsing.

JavaScript - The W3C doesn't provide an example, just mentions in an esoteric passage in their XML tuts that it's possible.

Finally, it's possible, they say, to use the tag in an HTML. That's odd, the strangest application I've seen for it yet. I don't know what kind of support browsers offer.

There are apparently multiple methods of synchronizing HTML with XML. Sorry if you already know this, but you said you didn't investigate it, so I thought I'd let you know just in case.

[edit]I tested the parsing ability of FireFox 1.5, Opera 8.52, Internet Explorer 6.0, Netscape 8.1 and Mozilla 1.7.12. Here are the results:

FireFox - parsed my XML correctly.

Opera - was a total mess.

Internet Explorer - parsed correctly.

Mozilla - parsed correctly.

Netscape - parsed correctly.

(X)HTML appeared fine on 4 out of 5 major browsers tested. Mind, these are the latest versions, so I don't know about older ones. But this is a pretty good score. And if you don't rely on (H)XTML for the whole page, it should work for all of them.[/edit]

[edit]I removed the XSL stylesheet and its reference in the XML file for testing on showing code. Same browsers tested. Results:

FireFox - upon realizing that there was no stylesheet, showed the document tree as expected. It gave a message at the top specifying that it couldn't find a XSL page and would show the tree.

Opera - again, total mess.

Internet Explorer - showed document tree.

Mozilla - showed document tree. Same message as FireFox.

Netscape - showed document tree. Same message as FireFox and Mozilla.

XML has FAIRLY good support nowadays - it's Opera that's falling behind the curve.[/edit]

So you might need to do something like that... Here's what to do... Go into your SERVER.. Do you see a file that you have uploaded? I want you to right-click on it, and select properties... Look at "path". That will show you the EXACT location of the file... Let me know what happens...

FlameGo into your server and look for the public_html folder. That's where you should place your files. Or a main folder. (Not all sites have public_html as their main folder    )

FlameHi,
Had the same problem had to change my Homepage name to Index or Home as this is the one that my ftp recognised.i am also having problems that when i upload my webpage it will not show the pictures, i just get a white box with a red cross in the corner, any ideas?.
thanks PakmacYour links are probably still pointingtoyour hard drive. Links must be relative, not absolute.What program are you using to upload? You aren't uploading each picture yourself over FTP are you?

FlameIf you're prepared to email/PM me your website/FTP details, I'll take a look for you.

Solve : Code for Images?

Answer»

Hi. I am a newbie to WEB design. I just started TAKING a class and am doing fine with text. However, I am trying to FTP my .jpg images and am having problems.

I have all my assignments, photos for them, etc. in one folder. The pathname for the image is something like this: sarajames/Desktop/ABC/HTMLSUM05/FTP/photo.jpe. I tried the code . I was able to view the photos and text on my local browser. However, when I proceeded to FTP the page, I kept getting an error message of "drive not ready. cannot locate directory." After clicking OK, I would then be able to see my text and the alt attribute but obviously not my image.

In case it's important, I am just using MS Word as a text editor. I don't know if that matters. My photos are also digital photos that I uploaded into my computer, which makes them .jpe and .jpg. Is this OK?

What am I doing wrong? Can someone help me with the code? As you can see, I'm confused!What program are you using to FTP?

Recommend using >NVu< as your web editor.  (It's free.)Hi. Thanks for your recommendation for NVu. I will definitely check it out. I work on a Mac and have been using Fetch.

Can you help me with the code? I'm stuck since I don't understand why the code is not working for me.

Thank you.I'm afraid I'm not a Mac user and couldn't say for sure what that error message means.  I've never used "Fetch".  The only thing I can see wrong with your , is that it should be ".jpg", not ".jpe".  I don't recognise the ".jpe" extension - is that Mac-specific?  It's still a JPEG photo, right?

Does it work, when you change that?

I hope you get on with NVu.  Word is an absolutely horrendous web editor; worse even than FrontPage.  Rob,

YES, .jpe is still a JPEG photo. My computer seems to upload two versions of my photos, one is a .jpg and the other is .jpe. .jpe is easier and faster to download than the .jpg version. I will try my tags again. Although, I did change from .jpe to .jpg a number of times without success.

So, I just want to confirm with you that for the pathname I attached in my original POSTING, the is correct?

I really appreciate your replies.

Thank you.

Yeah, you're using the right syntax.

I don't think that the .jpe extension will be recognised by browsers on other platforms.  You might want to bear that in mind.

Rememebr to make sure that all the files are in the right folders at your web HOST end.  Feel free to post a link to the web host if you want  some help diagnosing problems.

Solve : Code isn't functioning correctly...?

Answer»

Ok, I am designing a cheap website for a CLASS, and I entered the code... For some reason, my third and second pictures are right next to each other on the page, whereas the first and second are on top of each other. I used the same basic code with only a few changes in what specifically was being displayed, and everything LOOKS like it should be the same, but maybe i just need a fresh set of EYES to look at this... can anyone TELL me what's wrong? Also, I have a lot of problems with anchors... do I have the a hrefs right, or should they be reversed with the a names? Also, do I need the #s in the hrefs?

Solve : Pros and cons of using my PC as a server??

Answer»

I tried checking out the thread about using your PC as a server. But All I got was this...

Quote

The board field does not accept / in the query string

So... I am posting a new topic on the same subject. Sorry, but if these questions were answered I was not able to see.

My Questions:

What are the PROS and cons of using my PC as a server?

How would I go about using my PC as a server?

Thank you,

GeorgeProbably the biggest con is the AMOUNT of RAM your pc can store unless its got 3gb or something.The Pros, well cheaper then hired hosting
The CONI, cheaper, well on a long termine, you wil need a pc that is 24/7 online, and likely a good (read: expensive) one too...Erm... perhaps we should first establish what the OP means by "server"?

Do you mean a web server?

File and print server?

Application server?

Terminal (thin client) server?

Time server?

DATABASE server?

Parallellism server?

FTP server?

Tennis server?

Or what?

I think it's web server, because he posts it in WEBdesign, but actuallly, now you say it, it is quite unclearAssuming it's a web server, then expense is not necessarily an issue.  An old Pentium-100 can do the job; the more memory and hard drive space the better.  Install a bare, EFFICIENT Linux distribution with no desktop etc, and add Appache.  Hey presto, one competent fast world-class web server.

I was running an old Linux server on something like an AMD K2-450 for years until the fan failed and a hard drive died.  That provided web, file and print, time and database service effortlessly.

Solve : PHP: Fwrite?

Hi,

Normaly, this script shoud add the text to test.txt, but how can you make an text space, and that the file wirte yours text?

$filename = 'test.txt';
$somecontent = "Add to file\n";
?>

O, and i don't think this script works if the file test.txt doesn't exist...
so is there a way to make a file. For instance : Register ; then the file, whit the name that you set as username. In the file is your password. Is that possible?

mikiCurrently your script won't actually do anything other than set two variables.  You're missing the fopen()/fwrite() statements.  Use file_exists() to discover if the file exists.  Recommend you read through the whole FILESYSTEM section of the PHP manual.

Storing passwords in text files in your web root is of COURSE a very bad idea.  Anyone can guess the filename, point their web browser at it and retrieve the password.

You could store the text files somewhere else in the filesystem where only PHP could see them, but if you're serious about creating a secure form of user authentication, then you'd need to do this via a database, with md5 encrypted passwords, etc.so this script shoud work

$filename = 'test.txt';
$somecontent = "add to file\n";

if (is_writable($filename)) {

    if (!$handle = fopen($filename, 'a')) {
         print "cant open ($filename)";
         exit;
   }

      if (!fwrite($handle, $somecontent)) {
       print "can't write ($filename)";
       exit;
   }

   print "Succes: ($somecontent) to file ($filename)";

   fclose($handle);

} else {
   print "can't write $filename ";
}
?>

see BOLT : How to make one?

Take it like an web poll service :
1) you need to register, your username and password are stored in the database
2) when you clicked on a link, you get a poll, in for instance 5 hours.
3) the poll is named after the names in 2 lists : in the first list is - 1,2,3,4,... - and in the second - a,b,c,d,... -
4) If the file 1a already exist, the poll is named after 1b, till z, than 2a, ... ect.
5) you can find the poll on the login screen
6) The poll has diferent OPTIONS, but you can't change them. the options are for instance Yes, No and no opinion.
7) if selected No opinion, nothing happens. if selected Yes or No, at 24 o'clock the program wirtes in the poll file, in this example, this is 1a. in the file is Yes: number of votes - No: number of votes
if selected Yes : in the file yes +1

can you make a script please : PS : server is running PHP 4

making such script cost hours and hours of thime. You will need a mysql database too. Can you work with that? I got a good login script from rob, a few topics ago, i'll search the link. But I think you should learn a bit php first. I don't really understand what you want but clearly, you want a huge thing, but you can't write one line of it... that's a bit difficult...

Storing passwords in text files in your web root is of course a very bad idea.  Anyone can guess the filename, point their web browser at it and retrieve the password.

Like rob said, this is a very bad idea. A half year ago I got this idea to, because doing things with a textfile is very easy, but certainly unsafe!I'll GO and learn first Quote

Solve : Firefox not seeing a URL properly?

Answer»

I have a puzzle (at least to me) that no one has been able to help on just yet.

My website URL is dennismmamana.com   With Firefox on my laptop computer, I can open it as dennismammana.com, or as www.dennismammana.com/index.html, but NOT as www.dennismammana.com -- the way most people would type it in.  It just shows up as a Network Solutions page (that I've long since redirected to my webhost SimpleNet).

This happens ONLY with Firefox on my laptop computer; Firefox on my desktop opens every combination of these, as does my IE6 on both computers.

So I'm wondering if there might be a Firefox setting or something on my laptop that needs to be changed?  Or something more complex?  And, of course, I'm concerned that if it's happening to me, might it happen to others as well.

Thank you so much for helping to clear this one up!

Dennis

What version of Firefox are you using and what is the ERROR given when you try to access your webpage WITHOUT index.htm?It's probably a cache problem.  Ctrl+Shift+Delete clears private data (such as cache).I'm using Firefox 1.5.0.7.   Also, I've cleared my cache--as well as every other check box except passwords, but no change.How is the page redirected?  Javascript?  HTML headers?Well, as it always seems to do...  it's somehow fixed itself when being "threatened" by experts.

I cleaned the cache a few DAYS ago with no change;  I did again last night after your suggestion but it still didn't seem to help.  Later in the evening, however, it all seemed to change and it works just fine now!

Hopefully this settles the issue... thank you for your advice!GREAT; feel free to come back for more ideas if it reappears though.

I want to put a shot BOX on my site.. that shot box should contains name, email, meassage labels with submit and clear buttons.. if a user want to leave a msg in that box he should fillout the name, message unless he SHOLD get a error msg mentioned "pls fillout those name and message boxes".,,
the shotbox's msgs shold always dispalyed..

Pls anyone could tell me the HTML coding to put this shotbox on my web site???I guess you mean a shoutbox.  If you're unable or willing to learn PHP/Perl/ASP, then there's no need to REINVENT the wheel.  Google "shoutbox script" and you will find lots of free scripts that you can use to do this.  You will need a web server/host that provides PHP/Perl/ASP as the case may be.  You're most likely to find PHP scripts.

Note: you cannot do this with plain HTML - you need a program running at the web server end.hi rob thankz for ur time.. as u said I got da solution in google..Excellent.  This would be a brilliant little project for you to try and acheive yourself if you wanted to learn php/mysql.

Even THOUGH you already have what you wanted from google, i'd say have ago at designing your own. Much more rewarding than just grabbing a pre-made scriptTotally agree.

Solve : website building?

Answer»

as of now im building a new website using COOLPAGES
take note i dont know anything in HTML coding
THATS why i use coolpages becasue of drag and drop
but im getting problem with .swf, im using swishmax on this and im using another PROGRAM (supported to coolpages) to export it
the problem is when the file is getting bigger, it doesnt appear in the preview
im a guy not fun, or let say no time to learn HTML
i build 2 website and upload them in free hosting, and im proud with it
they are only simple (because i really dont know HTML)
and what im building right now is only just a simple and plain website

can somebody advice me another program that is easy to use "as in drag & drop" method that can AUTOMATICALLY supported flash (.swf)?

thanks in advanceDreamweaver.  Not free, alas.  Very easy to use though, and can even help you learn HTML.  thanks robpomeroy

i can ask the friend of my friend to install the Dreamweaver in my pc

My question is, as i mentioned, [highlight]coolpages is easy to use for me and only i getting problem regarding putting a .swf file[/highlight]
as im using coolpages, i can preview it in IE, so then i can save it as a .html
 :-? can i open it in Dreamweaver the .html file i save and edit it? :-? (only putting the .swf file then a little bit finishing touches then publish)

What can you advice about that

i know its a little bit more work but in my side thats only the BEST option i can

Hope for your kind assistanceYes, you should be able to open any HTML file in Dreamweaver to edit it further.  Frontpage-generated HTML may confuse Dreamweaver, but otherwise you should be fine.ok, thanks for the fast reply

i need one question

i try to follow this insert>>flash
why i cant move the file? for example dragging into the center

look for my foto, the red line is where i want to transfer

thanks in advanceIf you click on the Flash, what options do you have in its properties box?

Sorry - it has been a long time since I used Dreamweaver (version 4!).  Possibly someone who currently uses it may be able to help.  Otherwise, try the help facility "positioning Flash" or something like that.thanks for the assistance, i thot you still remember in this thing

BTW, what program you use in your website? maintenance?I do all of my website coding in plain text.  That's what works for me.  I'm not much of a visual/artistic guy.  So I use TSWebEditor or Notepad++, both of which do syntax-highlighting and automatic indenting, etc.  TSWebEditor also does intelligent code completion.

Both are free, naturally. Quote

Solve : Why can't I see my main ??

On this page of my website:

http://www.asc-net.com/web/company/

When you come for the first time, or refresh,

and the screen is smaller than the navbar,

the main div doesn't appear until you resize the screen bigger than the nav bar???

The navbar is float:left and the is absolute,

Does anyone have an idea???  Any help is appreciated.

Sincerely, Yakov.Absolutely no idea, but it works fine in Firefox!Hi Rob,

I was hoping you would be online.  I took the width off the navbar and everything started to scroll again.

Problem:  The main div is absolute so the navbar 'wraps' underneath the man div.

As of now I made the Navbar absolute and took off the float:left, if you have any suggestions or ideas that could keep the float:left or not use a absolute...I'm sorry, but you have hit precisely the kind of BROWSER incompatibility that sends me back to using tables for LAYOUT.  I know that some people get very hot under the collar when you do that, but support for tables is better and more consistent than support for CSS - especially when it comes to floats, overflows, etc.

Whilst I'm LOOKING at your website, there's one thing that I've noticed that is slightly irritating (sorry)!  You knwo when you hoever over the menu items?  The tab changes from having rounded corners at the top to having 90 degree corners.  Maybe not everyone would notice that...

That's a fairly complicated thing to do.  You definitely would require a database backend.  Would you track every vote?  Or every vote that comes from a unique IP address?  Or have a particular user-based SYSTEM so that only votes from registered users are counted?  Etc.

It's a big programming job - possibly four or five days worth of solid coding.OK thank so:

Thank YouA link like <a href='http://your.domain.com/videoname.rm' target='_blank'>click here[/url] should launch the video in the relevant program.  That does depend on the configuration of the user's browser however.  Which browser are you using?IE 6.0 & Mozilla Firefox
I yes i have try that code it STILL making the user to download
Embedded Media HTML Generator it saying that i have to give a server name which i ant got one yet and does Embedded mean having a video open in the browser it self which i dont want it to do.
The toturial i have come across doesnt work.

I want all user to view my video in a media player or anykind of player or browser
Please help me Robpomeroy

Thank youI'm AFRAID you cannot force programs to run on a user's PC.  Either video is embedded, or you have to let their browser handle the file as it chooses.  It will only load up an external program if (a) it KNOWS what kind of a file it's dealing with and (b) it is configured to run the corresponding program automatically.  You do not, as web designer, have control over that.

What you can do, is use the embedded method, but embed the video into a separate popup window.Yeah i guess that is the only way

I don't speak Dutch.  What does it do?

I'll try to explain as good as possible, but you know, my english is bad, terrible. Strange, but the service doesn't work at this moment, but I'll explain. These are the possibilities of the site:

    Register a subdomain* to forward. (example if you type blackberry.com/yourchosendomain it rederect to your chosen DESTINATION)

    The register function, has the following abbility's: Asking your disired subdomain* , asking your name, asking your email)

    If you have registered (and the subdomain* is avaible) SEND an e-mail to the e-mail adres, and there you need to active (so you are sure that the email exist)

    the abbility to check if the subdomain is allready in use (and if it is, the abillity to check who registered it (show the name & email that you typed while registering

    the abbility to show the last 5 registerd subdomains*

*= NOTE: by subdomain I DON'T mean: yourchosendomain.blackberry.com but I DO MEAN blackberry.com/your chosen domain, I know subdomain isn't the right therm for it, but I don't know an other way to say it right....

I know this looks a really complicated system (all that text) but actually it's just a few boxes and a small system. I don't need other special things, no hard things (like an myqsl data base, because I know this is way to much work) so PERHAPS anyone can help me with this one, pleas...

Although at the front, this looks quite simple, the PROGRAMMING behind it is not so simple.If a client wished me to build such a system, I would estimate 3-5 days of coding and testing, for which I would charge over £1000 (US$1,900).  You will need a database for this, since you will be storing data - even if it's only in flat files.  Using a real database would make perfect sense here, and MySQL would be my choice.

I would say this sounds like a FAIRLY ambitious project for you; I'm willing to help with the concepts and provide pointers for implementation, but I think you'll have to do the learning/work.  Unless you particularly want to pay me.   Why you will need a database, you can store anything in a .txt file?Yes, but what will you be storing in that text file?  Data.  Don't shy away from databases - they provide a MUCH more efficient (up to several orders of magnitude) method of handling and accessing data.  If a system like this were to become large and you were still using text files, it would grind to a halt.  With MySQL however, you could access and maintain all the data in less than a fraction of a second.

The other advantage of using a real database is that it encourages you to look at your data in a particular way: it creates consistency, logical development and implementation, and it has a very high geek factor!!!

MySQL is not that scary.  There are plenty of tutorials about.  You wouldn't regret learning.

Solve : Open multiple Pages in Frontpage?? HELP!!?

Answer»

I have to edit about 150 web pages in one specific local driectory/FOLDER with FRONTPAGE... Is there any way to OPEN THEM all at one as opposed to eight clicking each one and clicking edit....

It is taking soooo long that way....

This way I can use find/replace....

Thanks for any help!!Find the folder using Windows Explorer.  Click on each of the files you want to open, holding down CTRL.  Than drag the files down to Frontpage's button on the taskbar - DON'T LET GO of the mouse button.  Frontpage will then pop up.  Drag the files up to Frontpage's WINDOW and let go.  Voila.OMG -

I am SOOOO forever grateful to you!  I KNOW that is SOMETHING so silly, but obviously a NOVICE here still!

Thanks so much!!

You're welcome - no problem too small!  (Although admittedly, some of them are way too big...)

[glb]Flame[/glb]Simply PUT, it is a complete website SUPPORTED by FrontPage.  It will contain all of the necessary definitions, folders, themes, etc. necessary to publish and operate your website.

Once created, it will look like a normal FOLDER with a BLUE sphere on the front.  It can contain lots of hidden files.

Solve : Adobe Products VS. Jasc Paint Shop Pro/Corel?

Answer»

I'm CURRENTLY using JASC Paint Shop Pro 10.01/X and Corel Draw.  I've played around a little with Adobe Photoshop and Elements (forgot what VERSION.), and I found that Adobe had more capabilities, but crashed a lot and adding effects was slow going. I like PSP, because it's cheaper and doesn't crash on me too much. Which way should I GO, Adobe or Jasc? Also, any idea how much either product will slow down an XP system?

Thanks. ^^Use the RIGHT tool for the job.

I'm using version 5 of Paint Shop Pro.  It is very quick on my PC and does everything that I NEED to to do.  I am not highly artistic, and would gain very little from having Photoshop.  If you are a graphics expert and want the additional features of Photoshop (those same features which can apparently slow it down or make it unstable), go for Photoshop.

Alternatively, ditch both and plump for The Gimp, which is very Photoshop-like and free.

Solve : Running and exe within a web page?

Answer»

Hey, I've been making a web page and I found a higher attractiveness to customers when they can play a game right on screen (like a FLASH game) rather than downloading a zip file than running from there. The only problem is.....I don't know a way to RUN an exe program within a small square of space. All the games are compiled into an exe which is what is causing me problems. Another OPTION I had was creating an exploit to run the exe in the background when a user clicks a link to play. But that could be abused and is probably the reason why many browsers block things like that. Is there anyway that I can MAKE an exe game WORK like a flash game?
If you viewed the source of these pages, you'd see that they are not .exe files at all -- they're .swf, or "Flash". You'd need to learn flash, do something in flash, then use the tags to get it working. So, you may be stuck with the downloads -- maybe you can put a screenshot of the game and put it in there to help compensate and advertize. How does that sound to you?

Solve : How do i make a download link?

Answer»

How do i make it so when peolpe click on a link it downloads a file? (As in what html codes do i USE or is there a certain name for the file and is there a certain way to upload it) PLEASE HELP!!!!! jrid06.....  It would really help if you would tell US exactly what it is your trying to do .

dl65  I am selling e-books on ebay and want to send a link to the winning bidder in an email for them to download the ebook. I have a domain and a hosting account. What do i do next.jrid06....ok ...... Then simply send the URL ( the web address)of wherever you have the Ebooked stored to your client and they can click on it and download it.
Do you have a website setup using your domain name and is the Ebook residing on that site ?
For example, a relative of mine has a property for sale ....and he wasnt satisfied with the pics and description that his realator had posted ........so he SENT me what he wanted posted ...and I added it to a website that I manage.......
http://www.metrofordspurs.hypermart.net/sherwood/
That URL will TAKE one directly to the page with the pics and description of the property.   So in this case, you would have to have the Ebook UPLOADED to your site in a folder called "whatever" .........  Then the URL would be ........ "your website address"/ebook/

dl65  Thanks, i got it to work!

You need to delete "###" where you see it.  That is inserted to overcome YaBB's over-zealous script CENSOR.

Solve : Home - Internet explorer , in blue bar?

Answer»

When I bring up my published site, it says "home - microsoft internet explorer" in the blue TITLE bar at the top of the page. How do I get it to read what I want if I don't have a domain name?

http://home.cogeco.ca/~historyofverona/

I would like it to be:

The Incomplete History of Verona

I used Frondt Page to build it.The - Internet Explorer part you cannot delete. That's part of the browser. I don't use Frontpage myself, but if I did, I woudl tell you  :-/

[glb]Flame[/glb]l Found out how:

Change the title bar of my WEB page
The title of a page is the name that APPEARS in the title bar of most Web browsers. The title can be different from the file name.

For example, the title of your home page could be "My home page" even though the file name is Default.htm.

In any view except Tasks or Reports view, right-click the file in the Folder List, click Properties on the shortcut menu, and then click the General tab.
In the Title box, TYPE the title of the file that you want to appear in page banners and/or link BARS.
Note   The title you choose also appears in page banners and link bars that Microsoft FrontPage creates.

[glb]Flame[/glb]Thanks

I downloaded  a template from there and it gives three folder

Now how do i set the template in frontpage from here.

I know how to set a template in frontpage but from these 3 folders i am unable to do so.

Now we have two shouviks?   [size=18]Well, GX1 , as you could see that i was not logged in and posted as GUEST[/size][/color]There might be a readme file... Read it lol  Also see if there is just an HTML file... Use Frontpage on that, and when you upload, it will take the images with it.

Solve : Cross-browser trouble?

Answer»

Ack. The big problem of my time is STILL getting pages to work across browsers.

Well, I read that frames are deprecated by the W3C. Now, that rarely stops me, I can use the transitional or loose .dtd files if necessary. However, my mother has her site indexed by Google, and I've seen pages that are supposed to have frames but since Google linked to main.html instead of index.html, didn't have them. Wonderful. So, I'm trying to use the CSS attribute position: fixed. In fact, my total CSS code for that element is:

Quote

div.nav { border-top-style: none; border-right-style: solid; border-left-style: none; border-right-color: black;
border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-color: black; text-align: center; background-image: url("parchment_alt.gif");
position: fixed; top: 0px; left: 0px; width: 20%; }

My site in PROGRESS validates against transitional XHTML 1.0 and CSS standards. Great!

BUT... guess which highly popular browser doesn't support the CSS "position" attribute? I dunno about IE 7, but IE 6 sure as *censored* doesn't!

In FireFox, Netscape, and OPERA, I get my NAV bar to appear as normal. However, if I attempt to load the page in IE, it has the NAV bar in the correct position, but the content is below the NAV bar, and the NAV bar doesn't move with the page!

Is there any way to make this work in all browsers, that is not deprecated by the W3C?? Or will I just have to write code to display a warning in IE only?position is understood by IE6.  Different browsers interpret the box model slightly DIFFERENTLY however.  Floats can be particularly troublesome.  Cross-browser incompatibility is the main reason I still use tables for LAYOUT; most browsers do almost exactly the same thing with them.

If position: fixed isn't working for you, try position: absolute (generally more efficient).  position: relative is also useful, but generally only does what you expect it to, if you place it within a div that has position: absolute (not necessarily with any other style attributes SET).

Mind blowing.

If you want to get your head around CSS and the way support for it is broken on various browsers, you probably will want to spend a lot of time on >Stu Nicholls' site<.  Personally I can't be bothered because tables do what I need when CSS lets me down.
