Solve : To all webmasters: Design to aspire to?

Answer»

I don't about the rest of you, but I love seeing examples of high quality websites that blow you away.  Here's one with incredible artwork and excellent use of modern web technology.  Well worth a look, for the "wow factor" and for inspiration: http://www.fantasy-interactive.com/Extremely well built...Thanx Rob.Yes, I gree!No dialup user would wait for it to load. The "wow" factor is good for design, but not loading time. It took me ALMOST 20 seconds to load on DSL. Quote

The "wow" factor is good for design, but not loading time.
Agreed.  It took about 35 seconds from the time I clicked on the link before the Flash video started playing, and then it did not play without stopping for buffering.  I'm on DSL but apparently my DSL is not fast enough for that site to work SMOOTHLY in my browser.Good points.  I was behind a big fat 100 meg pipe when I first looked at the site so didn't notice the download overhead.  There is always a trade-off between eye-candy and speed - all designers of desktop windowing systems know this...

BUT!  One of the things I like about the site, is not just the excellent design work, but also the presentation.  I find it easy to navigate, despite being quite innovative.

For sure, there are things to criticise.  The video on the front page seems to have no way of stopping it.  I don't APPRECIATE it when multimedia elements - especially noisy ones - are imposed on the viewer.  There's too much scrolling, particularly in lower resolutions.  But for anyone who wrongly thinks they've made a pretty-looking site, I think this is a site to direct them to, to grab a dose of reality...Oh I wish!Great site.It took me 15 seconds to load.Guess that's because I have a 1999
model Gateway E4200.

Wish I had a fast computer like everyone else.BwaHaHaHa!

SNAP!Street1, the computer is not the issue here, it's the Internet connection speed.  Apparently, you have a FASTER DSL or cable Internet connection than Dilbert and me.   Quote

Solve : Can someone Help with a html color question???

Answer»

Hi there, IM trying to change the font color on a "about me" page on an auction site, and there are a few pieces of text that excaped my commands. My backgroung is black and the font is black, so its quite bothersome. I tried to change all of the font to certain shades of orange so I DONT WANT all the font to be one color, but if I have to...I will.

Thanks alot, any help and or suggestions would be wonderful!

ZadaEasily. With CSS, anything is possible. Open Notepad, and enter the following:

p.orange { color: orange; }

and save it as a CSS file. For this example, I'll call it master.css. In the tags of your HTML, include this line:

Change "master" to whatever you called the CSS file.

At the paragraph you want to be orange, change the

tag to

. Leave the

alone.How exactly do I save it as a css file? Should this be an option, or are you saying to call or "name it" it a css file.

Thanks for your help!  I mean save it with a .css extension. I wrote a brief tutorial here on saving with other extensions than .txt. gah, I see what to do, but its still not working. Probably from years of habit of "not being smart."Which is not working? The saving as .css or the rendering on the page?I saved it fine, but it's not showing up on the page.Don't forget the between the tags, and to modify the needed

to say

If you did these things, please post the HTML code for the page.Im absolutely confused now...OK. Please copy the HTML code for that page and post it. I'll check it out.The actual code is from a generator from Mygen.co

So Im not seing where to put the <link> Maybe if I just ignore the generating crapola and just do it myself, It will be easier. The generator is only useful when you need a few things done at once...Gah! >.<

Um, yes, that might be it. Manual editing is a little harder, but it's worth it in the end, since it gives much greater power. Sigh, Really don't even know where to start now... :-/

Thank you for all your help!!! I really apperciate it!!

-ZadaWell, if you need to start over (may be a healthy thing for a web design) you can always take a look at HTML tutorials:

http://www.w3schools.com/html/

That's the official W3C tutorial set, so it will make sure the code entered is good for most browsers. Take a read-through and feel free to let us know if you have questions/issues.

-DilbertIf we're instering code into an "About Me" page on an auction site, then there is little chance we'll have access to the HEAD tags.  So instead, the sensible option is to include STYLE tags WITHIN the HTML.

In answer to the above question, this should ideally go at the start of the HTML:
<***style>
p.orange
{
  color: orange;
}
<***/style>
then, the relevant paragraphs will be like this:
<p class='orange'>
  This paragraph is orange.
</p>

NB: delete the ASTERISKS (*) in the above example.  They are required in order to bypass this forum's anti-script filter.Yay! I just fixed it earlier today, but thanks for your help too Robpomeroy! Thats how I fixed it though Glad to hear it's working properly. Yeah, its good now! I don't really trust generators to begin with, but Im soooo lazy its incredidble recently. Thanks for all the help from you two!

Solve : BroadBand IP?

Answer»

Hi there,
I hope someone can on this forum can help with this problem.

When you have broadband arnt you assigned with *one* IP address ?
I've have tiscali broadband and just this afternoon i have noticed my IP being changed every time i connect to the internet. For eg. My IP could be 88.109.222.38 and then when i DISCONNECT and RECONNECT it will be eg. 88.68.49.7
I have no idea why this is happening and it would be greatly appreciated if anyone can help.
Cheers,
Shoon81

Edit: I have recently Installed and Uninstalled a BT Voyager 205 ADSL router that a friend gave me, other stuff that i have recently installed include: MSNPlus addon for MSN Messenger and AngryIP so i can keep a check on my home network when i hopefully get it setup in a few days.Broadband IP addresses are necessarily constant, although they certainly don't change as quickly as with a dial-up.

The IP for my cable connection used to stay static for long periods. These days it changes more frequently.

If you want to look deeper, open up a command window:

Start > Run > (type) CMD

Then type:

ipconfig /all

Your IP is probably assigned by DHCP. The loan start and end dates are given on the last two lines of output.

This is the Info i get when i do the command ipconfig /all

Host Name: SN039438120552
Primary Dns Suffix:
Node Type: Unknown
IP Routing Enabled: No
WINS Proxy Enabled: No

--Then theres some info about my Bluetooth dongle--

PPP ADAPTER Tiscali Broadband:
       Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
       Description: WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface
       Physical Address: *********
       Dhcp Enabled: No
       IP Address: ***.***.***.***
       Subnet Mask: ***.***.***.***
       Default Gateway: ***.***.***.***
       DNS Servers: ***.***.***.***
                            ***.***.***.***

The reason I have placed *'s over parts is because I dont want a mischevous user finding my IP or other sensitive info.According to that, you don't have DHCP enabled. Another system is being used. I can't offer any more because I simply don't know much more about networking.

Static IP addresses usually have to be requested from your ISP, and they usually cost a few pennies too. Quote

What to you mean by "Another system is being used" ?
I just find it strange that everytime i disconnect from my BroadBand connection and reconnect i have a different IP address just like the horrible Dialup days...I've never noticed my IP changed before.
You said you're using a router?  You should have DHCP turned on.  The IP from your ISP will be on the Internet side of the router and you will receive a 192.168.*.* IP from the router.

Yeah i was trying to setup my home network but i wasnt succseeding so i uninstalled the router...im currently using my SpeedTouch USB ModemFirst of all, my deepest sympathies to you for being a Tiscali victim.
In the UK, static IPs are not generally available unless you pay for them. If you want a static IP with Tiscali, then you'll have to "upgrade" to a businss account and pay extra. Even then it seems, there's no guarantee that you'll get it!

Most good UK DSL providers supply "sticky" IPs as default, which means they do change, but not often. The Tiscali IP POOL is strictly dynamic which means it changes every time you reconnect.
If you need to be found, use No-IP.

As for setting up a network, I personally prefer to use static IPs lanside. It makes NAT'ing etc so much easier.

If you're using the Voyager 205, use the ethernet connection on your main machine. There is no need to run any setup for an ethernet connection. You only need install the drivers on the machine that is connected via USB.Thanks for everyones help.
Just aslong as the IP change is normal and im not being hacked.
Cheers again,
Shoon81My ISP ,Adelphia, changes my static IP once a year.

when i did that in the cmd that is all that came upbilly......ok ......thats what it should say .........the ip address is that of the router ......
So now go back to the same place again ..only this time type "ipconfig/all and enter .........
let us know what it says ........

The next THING to do is plug directly into his modem ......and see if you can connect to the net ok .....
and let us know . ( In other words just connect your pc to his modem ....without the router )

I don't think it would make a difference.  Let us know if it happens again.
Will do.. thanks. I will try both ways next time I update.Talisman.....  When you do a website update .....exactly how are you doing it ?
Are you opening up your site in IE ....... then clicking on the frontpage icon in the IE toolbar ....... then a box appears and you put in your username and password ........ then the root directory is downloaded and the page you clicked on ( when you opened your site) will be displayed ...... If thats not the page you wish to update...... simply find that one in the root directory ..... open it ....make the changes .......... and then click the save button and it will be saved and published....... now go back to your site , hit the refresh button and your changes will be there .

dl65  MMM thanks dl65. well.. I have updated in two different ways.. usually.. (1) Open up my Front Page 2002.. then open my web.. then open the index.htm, or the page I want to update.. then I save.. then I go to Publish under File. Sometimes it publishes straight away without asking me for password etc. other times my sign in box will appear. Sometimes I open all pages in my web, but make sure I am in my index.htm when I publish.. (Dont know if it makes any difference) ?

The second way I have published,.. open my web in I.E. go to the page I wish to update.. go to file.. and Edit with Microsoft FrontPage.. do my changes,.. then click Save. then refresh.. as you have just said above.. !

Solve : ASP.net 2.0 question.?

Answer»

Hi all,
I am running Windows XP SP2 with IIS and .NET framework 2.0 installed.  In the Default Website I have designated index.aspx as a valid document.
When I go to http://localhost in my WEB browser I get a BLANK page.  Not a "Page Cannot Be Found" error, just a page with a white background and nothing more.
In my index.aspx page I am trying to attach to and view information in a ACCESS database.  The code is VERY SIMPLE right now (until I can get it working correctly) Here is the code....

ASPX Test

  ProviderName="System.Data.OleDb"
  ConnectionString="Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data Source=D:\Databases\eCommerce\eCommerce.mdb"
  SelectCommand="SELECT ItemNumber, ItemName, ItemPrice, ItemQuantity FROM Products"/>

The path in the DataSource is relative to my local machine.  I KNOW that the database CONTAINS data.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Bump.

Anyone have a suggestion???I checked one of my projects and noticed two things,

1. there doesn't appear to be a clause
2. should you not be using AccessDataSource with Access; not SqlDataSource

Just some thoughts.

Solve : AOL or Computer Problems...Which One?!?

Answer»

Okay...Lately , while I am online, my computer will "freeze", with blue AOL bar at top of SCREEN turning grey, and curser vanishing.  A click of the mouse will correct problem for a few moments.  Now, AOL will stop responding altogether, usually while reading emails, or while opening welcome page is being viewed, and it requires a C+A+D to close program and start AOL again.
Strange, like while I am TYPING this, if the "freeze" happens, the blue goes grey, curser vanishes, but little smiley faces still roll their eyes, blink, etc.  This "thing" seems to slowly stop happening the longer I am online.  But, close and restart AOL, same thing again.

Any ideas?

Oh yeah...I have already removed and reinstalled AOL using a new disc...same thing. BubbaBob......Have you ensured that you have not been visited by some NASTIES ....... I would be booting into safe mode ,turn off system restore and run a complete scan for viruses , trojans and spyware .
Do not use your system restore ......just in case its a virus or trojan issue.

dl65  Yep that happen to me before, becasue i visited some sort of UNDERGROUND site and it start F**kin up on AOL
The way i fix this is Formatting the computer but before that i image the computer first.
You dont have to formatt it ( i know is supid ) but it always work fine after ward or you can go in DOS mode and fix the error from there (still i havent have the knowlege to do it).Okay, I think i'll try that.  I just picked up another AOL disc, just in case, and reloaded...same thing, and getting worse.  Going into safe mode now.  Thanks...i'll let you know the outcome.Wo you dont want to do that yet

Solve : Two HTML Questions?

Answer» Two questions regarding html coding:

What does it mean by "blockquote" tab??

I mean
.

I have read about this tab but not understood clearly.

Another question:

How to give the background of a certain text PORTION a certain color? I mean, which tab to use?

thanks..OK. Blockquote pushes the paragraph in a little ways on both SIDES, and justify-aligns it, I believe.

Info on blockquote can be found here.

If you want to highlight only a portion of a paragraph, you can always set it up with code LIKE this:

Code: [Select]<body>
<P>The due date is <FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: yellow">next </FONT>week.</P>
</body>
This will highlight the word "next" in yellow. You can change colors, of course.

[edit]Removed the "techically can't be done". That information is innacurate.[/edit]Very Nice Help. Thanks You're welcome. To remove confusion, I edited my first POST since apparently it technically CAN be done...

Solve : Building a guest book in Dreamweaver MX...?

Answer»

I'm a little stumped. I was working with FP XP for a while but because my host doesn't support FP extensions I have laid my STICKY mitts on Dreamweaver MX 2004.

It's kind of like jumping in at the deep end.

I have a book from the library but all it actually tells me is that I can do all these theings, but actually how or indeed how they work.

Beside the POINT.

What I'm trying to do is make a simple guest book. In a two frame page, type your comment in the top ONE it will appear in the bottom one after submitting it.

I have the forms layed out, the submit button and everything is there visually I just can't seem to make it work. The form is set for POST I tried a form in the bottom frame set for GET, made the relevent targets and it just doesn't work.

Any help?The webserver you're putting these pages on: does it run perl or php?  What database are you using?  If the answer to both these questions is "no idea", it might be a little premature to be writing a guestbook...KNEW it was a mistake posting this on here, still desperate measures.If you're able to answer those questions, then we can point you in the right direction.

How is posting here a "desperate measure"?

Solve : Are fonts registered trademarks??

Answer»

[size=16]Hello,

ANYONE up on Canadian Law?

I came across a site of fonts and was wondering if I used one in my web site TITLE would I be breaking any laws?I beleive that Coca cola is tradmarked, but what about Google, Yahoo, ect.[/size]

http://searchdon.com/create.asp
 Kellee......  Are you sure your not confusing ...... trademarked names with fonts there a huge differance.

dl65
I mean, Do they have all rights to the font type? You know Google's colours & font or Yahoo's kooky font in red?

Could I get sued for using any of them for my business ?

 Kellee......  Well , I do not think that the fonts are trademarked or they would be marked as such ....... So I would go ahead and use whatever font STYLE you wish ....... the same would apply to colours ...... Do the colours SHOW up in any of the pantone charts or ANPA color or DIC color guide.

dl65  i'm sure these letters are made with http://www.logogle.com/ (google logo maker) read the policy there...There are fonts that are copyrighted. Any work done by someone is considered to be copyrighted work and PROTECTED under copyright law. This debate is discussed A LOT on the below article.

http://www.faqs.org/faqs/fonts-faq/part2/

I've never heard however of any site getting in trouble or sued for using a particular font. But that's not to say it couldn't happen.

Solve : Need HTML help?

Answer»

i just added a new background on my myspace page and i cant see the words on the page cause they are black mainly like my background is there anyway to change the color of the text so it can be seen?

if you can help me send me a IM on yahoo at rb7be2004 or a email at [email protected]My latest PM:

Quote

Well, it doesn't matter if I know how to do it if MySpace doesn't let you. I'm asking you to ask MySpace if they support CSS. If they do, I can give a solution quickly. If not... we'll take it from there.

I have a CSS file ready to go, but it's useless if MySpace won't accept it. I am aware of the tag, but I'd prefer to avoid that if at all possible.tryin to find out right now nothin yet  :-/Let us know how they answer. well nothin back from MySpace but from what i have FOUND on the net searching around it does support ithttp://mastersofmyspace.com/css/primer from what this says we can use itOK. I have it here. Read the readme for installation. (I'm not sure where your HTML files are, but...)im a dope with it comes to HTML lets see if i can pull this off

but i get the html off of a website so do i just type this in on the prepaired html layout?OK. I asked Rb7de to Email all three of my accounts. I have just received it on my Yahoo! ACCOUNT, but not my MSN or Hotmail accounts. I find this to be highly disturbing. Something must be up at MSN... anyhow, I did receive it, and I'm looking it over.

EDIT: OK, below is what I see. I don't see any text to the right, but there's NOTHING when I highlight. What is it you want changed? (And no, guys, I don't normally use IE. FireFox kept overriding my pages)

ahh i use firefox lol here check out my myspace page on "FIREFOX" http://www.myspace.com/secksayblues MOST of the text still shows up blackI use FireFox too, but I just happened to use IE for this test. I've downloaded the source code for your page. However, loading it crashes my browser, and the HTML-Kit preview. So I'm going to have to "fly blind" so to speak, by looking at what you've got and editing the code in my HTML-Kit. I can do it, but it will take a bit.

You know what I find odd? In the code, where it says "Mind over matter...", it says the table cell's background color is to be #ffffff. That's white. And yet, it comes out black. This is a bit odd... you'd think it WOULD be #000000...

Another oddity: Your code (which has the deprecated tag, I note) has the bgcolor attribute (also deprecated) set to #e5e5e5. This is a very particular shade of gray. It's fairly light. Then why the heck is it black? I'm working on it - WAIT. Can you upload pure HTML to MySpace? If not, the whole thing's moot.

Solve : Basic deaweaver help?

Answer»

I just woundering how to do this:

1. Draw a box or a layer with a round square and it must have a nice colour boarder.
2. Set the spacing or reduce the spacing when pressing ENTER (not letter spacing)
3. Inserting little icon in the text field like   8-) :-? but different icon.
1. You can't round your corners from dreamweaver.

2. The only way to make it not double space is to hold shift then enter.

3. To insert an icon, put it in an image folder of the pathed space that you made, then make a text box, then insert the picture.Thank you

I see some nice site that has a round frame or round square i wounder how it can be done?I'm afraid I'm going to disagree with Perfect Agent's first two replies.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by your questions, Elixir, but here goes?

1.  What is a "round square"?  Do you mean a rectangle with rounded corners?  If so, this is not too difficult.  You would need to create a table with 3 rows and three columns.

Row one: first cell contains the top left section of your border (a rounded corner - a gif); second cell contains the top border (which can be one pixel wide - make it the background of the cell and repeat it HORIZONTALLY); third cell contains top-right section.

Row two: first cell contains left hand border - which can be one pixel wide and repeated vertically; second cell contains your text; third cell contains right border.

Row three: similar to row one.

You can most easily do this using CSS.  If you were using 8 pixel borders, the CSS could be:

Code: [Select]td.tl, td.t, td.tr, td.l, td.r, td.bl, td.b, td.br
{
  border-collapse: collapse;
  padding: 0px;
  margin: 0px;
  font-size: 1px;
}
td.tl, td.t, td.tr, td.bl, td.b, td.br
{
  height: 8px;
}
td.tl, td.tr, td.l, td.r, td.bl, td.br
{
  width: 8px;
}
td.tl, td.tr, td.bl, td.br
{
  background-repeat: no-repeat;
}
td.t, td.b
{
  background-repeat: repeat-x;
}
td.l, td.r
{
  background-repeat: repeat-y;
}
td.tl
{
  background-image: URL('tl.gif');
}
td.t
{
  background-image: url('t.gif');
}
td.tr
{
  background-image: url('tr.gif');
}
td.l
{
  background-image: url('l.gif');
}
td.r
{
  background-image: url('r.gif');
}
td.bl
{
  background-image: url('bl.gif');
}
td.b
{
  background-image: url('b.gif');
}
td.br
{
  background-image: url('br.gif');
}
And the HTML could be:
Code: [Select]<table>
  <tr>
    <td class='tl'>&nbsp;</td>
    <td class='t'>&nbsp;</td>
    <td class='tr'>&nbsp;</td>
  </tr>
  <tr>
    <td class='l'>&nbsp;</td>
    <td>Your content goes here</td>
    <td class='r'>&nbsp;</td>
  </tr>
  <tr>
    <td class='bl'>&nbsp;</td>
    <td class='b'>&nbsp;</td>
    <td class='br'>&nbsp;</td>
  </tr>
</table>Having done that, you can put the table anywhere you want, using CSS positioning.  If you don't want anything BENEATH it to show through, ensure you use non-transparent backgrounds.

2. You need to CSS STYLE your paragraphs.  e.g.
Code: [Select]p
{
  padding: 0px 0px 5px 0px;
  margin: 0px 0px 0px 0px;
}

3.  Don't know what you want to do.  "Text field"?That what i mean rob (1st Q)

Solve : web server on a home pc?

Answer»

a friend told me that it was possible to set up a web server on my home pc. i mean, create my website and host it from my pc. he told me that there would me no problems, especially storage, as my computer's HDD would be the storage space. the only drawback i was told was that in order to make my site accessible all the time, i would have to remain online(i.e. connected to the internet) all the time. he also told me that what i needed was just Aprelium's Abyss Web Server X1 (aprelium.com) and something called No-IP DUC, and maybe(not importantly) some other tools. i was also told that all i had to do was create a site in Frontpage and host it thru Abyss Web Server X1. but because each time i connect my IP changes, i would have to use No-IP DUC. if any one has any details about this or if anyone could tell me how i could host a site from my PC step-by-step or if any one has any links related to this then plz reply on this forum. He (my friend) told me he could help me but i thought i should ask the professionals first. also, i live in the middle east so some stuff on the net is blocked here

i have a pretty powerful machine (BUILT it myself) so i was thinking that if the above is possible then i might make my own website. if u need to know any specifications of my PC then plz specify exactly what u need to know. also, i wanted to know that because i am using Win2KPro, is there anything i need to do with IIS?

thanx in advanceyou would like to create an ftp-server, or really a web server to host websites?You would need to purchase a domain name and link it to your Web server's IP address. You should make sure with your ISP that they have given you a static IP address, not one that will change. OTHERWISE people won't be able to get to your site via the domain name.

Windows 2000 Professional doesn't have IIS installed by default so you would need to install it via the Add/Remove programs app.

Also verify with your ISP that they will let you run a Web server. I have heard that most ISP's won't let you do this because of the potential of huge bandwidth usage via the uploads that your Web server will be pushing out. Uploads consume more bandwidth than downloads.

Nah - no domains need be purchased and no static IP address is required.  Check out http://www.dyndns.org.  Read the FAQs there.  It will do exactly what you want.

I've never heard of Aprelium's Abyss Web Server X1; but why not just use IIS?  Or if you want an extremely responsive efficient webserver that is deployed on the majority of websites on the internet (and is free) go for Apache.  Apache configuration is done through text files though and not everyone is comfortable with that.

DO NOT run a web server unless you either a. have a well configured firewall or b. don't care what people do to your computer or what they use it for (e.g. you are deliberately creating a honeypot).

The bandwidth comments in the last post are not necessarily correct.  Here in the UK at least, most broadband has wider bandwidth downstream (traffic to your computer) than upstream (traffic away from your computer.  e.g. I have 2Mb downstream - brilliant for browsing the web, but 128k upstream - useless for hosting high volume websites (all the users would experience very slow response times).

Another thing to consider: it is not advisable to run a production service (web, ftp, news, gaming, IM, etc) on the same computer you use for your work.  Otherwise you may well find that conflicts occur or that performance (for you or for your users) is unacceptable.  Epsecially don't even think about providing a web service on a computer that you regularly use for gaming.If your looking at a home server on a pc that will only be your server then checkout http://www.clarkconnect.com.  I am running it an really like there software.  The best part is that the home edition is free.  It has Linux/apache/mysql/php already setup in it.  You can checkout my site at http://www.lonnieworld.com to see how it runs.  This package comes with an email server, http server, mysql, php, perl, router package and  firewall.  You can use it as a router with 2 or more ethernet cards or you can set it up as a stand alone server.  I prefer the router so it protects my network with a good firewall and intrusion detection.  GREAT FREE PACKAGE

Solve : Web Server!?

Hi,

I have a number of sites hosted on a web server, when I try access this site (www.chemgritsa.co.za) on the internet I get the following error:

" You are not AUTHORIZED to view this page
You might not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials you supplied.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you believe you should be able to view this directory or page, please try to contact the Web site by using any e-mail address or phone number that MAY be listed on the www.chemgritsa.co.za home page.

You can click  Search to look for information on the Internet.

HTTP Error 403 - Forbidden
Internet Explorer  "

Any SUGGESTIONS - What does this mean?
I've checked the server and can ftp to the folder containg the site, and all the dat etc is there!

You have to check the permissions (read-write-execute) on the folder that contains your Web files. Make sure it says something like "Everyone - Allow read". Quote

Solve : Web Phone-in?

Answer»

Hi, I don't think I've relayed this idea here but if I have, sorry, because I'm about to do it again.

Does anyone with any know-how, know whether it's possible to create a WEB phone-in? I was thinking it could use microphones through MSN or some other CLIENT, and then stream it out to others.

What do you think and is it possible?You're thinking of internet group chat, aren't you?  Yes, this technology has been around for some time.  I think that Skype offers this sort of FACILITY.  You could also probably set up some sort of private server to do this; doubtless there is a multi-way videoconferencing server project available free for Linux...I'm not too aware of group chat but, to clarify, I'm thinking of a literal web phone-in. An advert on a website with people trying to connect to discuss issues which will then be streamed from off the website to large numbers of listeners.

I know radio phone-ins can be streamed but I'm curious about being able to make a phone in from my computer.As I said; this could be done.  And you can link to pretty much anything on a web site.  But it would INVOLVE the installation of dedicated software at the server end, and probably at the client end too (you can't receive streamed video withou installing Media PLAYER or RealPlayer, for example).I see. Do it for me!

Anyone know of anything like this already out there? Quote

Solve : web pics?

Answer»

Can anyone suggest what camera they recxcomend to take pictures for posting to your business website, ..3 megapixels? 8 megapixels and such,.  ThanxDepends more on the quality of the camera than the NUMBER of pixels; also depends on the size of the picture you just want to produce.  Go for quality rather than numbers: read some reviews and make your choice.

I would suspect that even the cheapest of the brand name cameras will do what you want, adequately, these days.  But if you want people to be able to download large versions of the pictures (e.g. if your business were photography!) you would need to look at the issue a LITTLE more carefully.If you just want some photos for graphics on a web page, there's absolutely no reason to use a high megapixel camera.  In fact, you should focus on balancing image quality with image file size.  Do you want to keep your web page files REASONABLY small so that dial-up users don't have a long wait for the page to load?  If so, then you want to optimize your web page images.  By optimize, I mean strike a balance between image quality and file size.  Many websites to a poor job of optimizing images for web use.

I took the photo of the church on this website with a 2MP Fujifilm camera: http://www.hosanna-lutheran.org/.  It's about 45Kbytes but could easily be a smaller file, for a picture that looks exactly the same.  In fact, I sent an optimized version of about 30Kbytes to the webmaster but he's being a little hard headed and has not replaced the CURRENT one with the smaller file.

Solve : Adding comments using forms and whatnot??

Answer»

How can I allow my website viewers to add comments to to my pages?
I have some news articles that I have written up, and I would like visitors to be able to write comments, leave an email address and a web address, and I would like to be able to remove inappropriate comments.

And I would like these visible on an HTML page.
How do I do this?
(I did Google it, and got nothing. If you Google it and get more than I did, tell me what you searched for)

I want to avoid using any more web programs that need MYSQL databases.I don't see how you could use forms for that.  Forms are used for a visitor to submit a message to you; once it's submitted, the form is cleared for subsequent messages.

What about a blog?  Have you considered that?  Here's some info: Step-By-Step: Give a Site Blog Appeal

By the way, why does you message appear above the divider line, the line that separates "Important TOPICS" from "Board Topics"? Quote

Well, this isn't a blog, but I will look into it anyways. Forms can post information..... much like what you just did when you made your last post.

My message is showing as a sticky? I don't see it like one. It looks normal...
Must be another YaBB bug.
HTML forms can "submit" information to the web server, to be retrieved by the webmaster.  But, forums require more sophisticated technology.  Indeed, installing a forum may be an option.  Many web hosting services provide forum installation to their clients, even in starter level hosting plans.  It seems to me your options are a forum or a blog.I have YaBB, but I like using my own HTML.If you're going to allow the addition of comments, you could write a PHP script that automatically edits the HTML and adds some extra text.  That would actually be more complex though than a database-driven method.

What you're describing is basically a Wiki.  There's a list of different Wiki engines >here<, a good place to start.What you MEAN is Guestbook this show you how to MAKE one.
Well, I already have a guest book, you can sign it if you would like. I think its here:
www.jessez.mbhosting.com/guestbook
EDIT: Oh Crap! I deleted the MYSQL database for it!

I will look through that list of WikiEngines. They look mostly like content management systems. I will take a closer look later. Quote

Well, I do see exactly what you mean. But what I am looking for is a comment system. This is something that allows you to leave comments on the INDIVIDUAL pages, for example, at the bottom of a page.
If I see a site that I can use as an example, I will show you.

Solve : Forum Software?

Answer»

I like YaBB. I know how to use it, I know how it functions, and I know its secure.

But I am making a family website, and I need to add a forum.

Is YaBB one of the easiest to use?I've used phpBB but have not used YaBB, so I don't know how they compare.  But, I thought I'd mention the phpBB demo at http://www.phpbb.com/demo.php.  You can see how their Administrators Control Panel works.

By the way, I created a little family website about 15 MONTHS ago and PUT a forum in it.  Initially, five of my relatives REGISTERED and a few posted a very small number of messages.  But, as time went on, I was disappointed to see a lack of interest.  After about 6 months of no activity, I took the SITE down.  I hope you have a more satisfactory experience.It looks about as easy to use as YaBB... I have used Mbhostings ORIGINAL forum which was PHPBB, but I didn't really like it. I will have to find some demo boards to see what they have.

Do you know how secure PHPBB is?

Solve : B/G Sound !?

Answer»

[highlight]Front Page 2002[/highlight]. .. I can get a b/g sound on my page with the f/p plug-in,.. but it only plays once,..and I have some nice loops 15 secs,.. on the other hand, I can put the loops in via html using the EMBED tag,.. BUT .. I want visitors to be able to TURN music ON or OFF if they want to. CAN IT BE DONE. ?

                Thanks in advance.. TallyYes, you can use the embed tag and MAKE hidden=false. Then the buttons for "pause, stop and play" will be visible:

PS You can change the autoplay and loop to whatever you want!
/methanks J.C. . I will try that..  you're welcome!hi jc.. I tried the above.. copying and pasteing both in the head, and the body,.. but it only showed the TEXT in my preview.. any suggestions..?http://www.freewebs.com/kfma/Other/bf3low.mp3" autoplay=true loop=true hidden=false>

That is the exact code I have on my website!!!( http://www.freewebs.com/bfremix ) You might have forgotten a ">" or a "<"!mmmm tried it again and again jc, but it don't work on mine,.. dont know if it makes any difference, but are you using front page, ?.. and ie.
by the way,. tried your site,. got the home page up,. but the links didn't work !! and you had sound on the home page, SOUNDS great too,.. but how can a visitor turn the sound off.   which is what I want. can you try my url http://talismanpr.netfirms.com and tell me if there is sound on the index and about me pages.

                           thanks again TallyI can get your sound file to play in my preview.. but no on/off button.. so i have put in a b/g sound and looks like this.. but there is no on/off button with this. grrr.. what do you think ?
                                                                        sorry for being a pain.. but I would like to beat this problem.
         Tally :-/
First of all, do you know that when other people visit your site they won't be able to hear the music, because the music is on your computer only???
If you send my the music you want on your site, I'll write you a code that will work!!! bgsound is not a seperate tag. It's an attribute. It would look like this:

bgsound="yourURLhere">

(Aside: The quotation marks are only necessary in XHTML. They are optional in HTML.)

However, I should warn you that the bgsound attribute is non-standard. You're better off with the tag. Try this:

Replace "yoursound.wav" with your sound file. The "height=3" crap is because on Netscape 4 and below there's trouble if the size is less than 3. Don't ask me why; it just will. Also, if you follow the approach, put it at the end of your page, right before the tag. This way, the page can download well before the sound, making it easier to browse your site.

I have both loop and playcount because "playcount" only works in Internet Explorer, and "loop" only works in Netscape.

Also, Ceasar here is right: Make sure the sound is in the same directory as the sound, online or offline! well.. all I am gettin after copy+paisting into my html is exactly what I coppied.. in text form.. and forgive my ignorance here.. but how do I post a wav/mp3 file on here..I see the insert link.. email.. image.. but no att. for a music file ?

                           thanks folks... Tally :-/
                                                                      [size=12][/size]Yippeeee,.. I have cracked it boys,.. I inserted a front page plug-in.. which only plays the wav once and does not allow loops.. ! then I took away the end > and pasted the last part of Dilberts tag which is height="3" width="3" playcount="-1" loop="true" autostart="true">

Now I have a plug-in on/off control which plays indefinite... I am very happy with that.. may I thank you jc and Dilbert very much for both your help.

                  Tally tell me how to send you the music wav jc.. then others wil hear it too.. ty
ps. maybe need your email address to send an att.You could try Winzip. try this one..i use this one all the times for bgsounds... its
DOOD, this one has been resolved already!If you'll read carefully, you'll note the problem of the BGSOUND is already fixed, if in a slightly unorthadox method. Also, as I've already mentioned, BGSOUND is NOT a seperate tag. It's an attribute.

Thanks, JC, didn't see your post there. Quote

Solve : Change background colour with hovering mouse?

Answer»

Sorry if the title makes no sense but I am not sure how to put this in few words.

Basically what I am trying to find out is the HTML code to allow the background COLOUR of a box change (or highlight) when the mouse is moved over it. Similar to what happens on some forums when you hover over a category.

JKHTML links will usually change colour/style when you hover over them.  Here are a couple of useful links/tutorials concerning using CSS to do this: >1< >2<.

Note that the CSS :hover psuedoclass is not SUPPORTED by all browsers for all elements.  Styling hyperlinks usually works, but styling other HTML elements may not.

The other way would be using JAVASCRIPT and the "onMouseOver"/"onMouseOut" events.  A bit more complicated than the CSS method, but that's how it used to be done before CSS really took off, and is still often used for rollover image effects (buttons that change when you hover over them, etc).Thanks, I am using frontpage for the most part and I am not sure I can use CSS in the HTML coding.You should be able to...  But in any case if you HANG around here long enough you'll quickly pick up how much I hate FrontPage.    I recommend the free program NVu, which you'll find if you follow the link in my signature to the software FAQ.Why is this post a sticky? Admittedly, this is all new to me, I am just learning but seeing what can be done I want to try everything. Just not all in one go.

Thanks for the advice Rob, I haven't had the chance to get into Frontpage fully so I haven't found the BAD parts. Just out of curiosity, where do I find NVu amongst the list from that link.Bring up the software FAQ, then press Ctrl+F (find) and type NVu.  Your browser will find it on the page for you.

Solve : URL link, force browser to open full screen?

Answer»

Hello... I am having troubles and figured I would post it to the web design group since it is most likely a command that I can add at the end of the URL for formatting.

The problem is that I have some saved links to web sites, and when selecting them, they dont open full screen. Is there a format tag that can be added to the end of the URL path to force the browser window to open to full screen every time it is opened???

Such as www.website.com/=fullscreen or something like that. I have seen formatting added to URL's before, but haven't seen a full screen command yet to use as a reference to fix my links to open to full screen vs a window....

Or is this a setting in IE that I am missing. I am running XP Pro SP2 and IE 6, soon to upgrade to IE 7.

Thanks   :-?Update on this .... I found out that if I already have my browser opened to another PAGE at full screen and minimized on my toolbar, the next browser windows launched for more than one instance of IE 6 go full screen. But if launched by shortcut to URL without a prior window open to full screen, the window opens at a smaller window around 1/3 screen size.

So I have a work around for an automated macro which REQUIRES the screen to be full screen, but would still like to see if anyone knows of a tag extension that can be added to my URL to force full screen on launch.

Thanks ... Dave :-/The answer is no.  And in fact nothing that you see in a URL will give any kind of command to a web browser.  You may POSSIBLY have seen some javascript window.open commands in a javascript hotlink - but that causes javascript to run, rather than passing a URL to a browser address box.

Look up AutoHotKey - it can do some of what you WANT.  Otherwise, make sure that the last OE window you CLOSE is full screen, then opening them they should all follow suit.  Or just use Firefox, and send all new windows to a tab.  Or use IE7.

Solve : WebCam Video Help Please?

Hi
Not sure this is the correct place to post this so I apologise in advance.

I very RECENTLY bought a Orite I-Watcher IC-100 Web Cam from Aria (this is an IP cam) have it working lovely however, I'd like to put the image from the web cam into a web page but don't know how to do this and the website www.orite.com.tw is not responding.

The webcam produces its own WEBPAGE with OBVIOUSLY a streaming picture from the webcam. I can see the webcam locally or from my ISP IP address but it uses its own builtin web page. How do I get that streaming image ONLY into my own webpage so that I can publish the streaming video on the internet for public viewing?

Your help would be MOST welcome.

Solve : Can't load new website?

Answer»

I have built a beautiful new website and tried to load it with WS_FTP LE, and I keep getting a ! error Failed Transferat the BOTTOM left HAND.

I have built a site before and operated it for a few years without problem, but am flummoxed by this. Have contacted my provider to see whether there was a 'communications' issue, but no explanation yet. My space is up on the net and showed itself to be open on FTP.

I took it down to them on a disc yesterday to ask them to load it, but this morning, it's still not up. It's built in Front Page, and I have Windows XP. Thanks, RobynFrontPage extensions.... Yuk! Most ISP based and free webspace providers won't support FPe but that shouldn't stop you upping it.I second that YUK.

For FTP transfers, I recommend FTP Surfer.  It's a very competent freeware FTP client.I have the Dreamweaver program but haven't had a play with it yet. If I open the site in that, how might I correct the 'issues'?

I will download  and try it with the Surfer.

Thanks for your input. Quote

how might I correct the 'issues'?
Remove the FrontPage-specific code.  I'm afraid I don't use FrontPage and can't HELP you there.

You're better off using PHP if you want to do anything fancy with your web site.  Speed - efficiency - installed client base - EXPERT assistance - lots of free stuff.  Oh, and it has this advantage over FrontPage Server Extensions: it works.
It's up and running ( www.robynrinehart.com ), but some of my links aren't working now, even though I've tested it over and over! Back to the drawing board. Will put it into Dreamweaver and do as suggested. Hard work for an old brain like mine. Thanks for the input.There is some very nice artwork there and you deserve wider recognition.
Do you seriously think the "no right click" script will PROTECT you though?
I can rip every graphic or anything else off that site in under two minutes.Some images are still sourced using absolute URLs in your PCs filesystem.

Example: page -  http://www.robynrinehart.com/cartoons.htm

Some of the navigation buttons are faling to appear because they are sourced like this:

file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Robyn%20Rinehart/My%20Documents/My%20Webs/myweb/tababout2.gif

Meanwhile,...
What a gorgeous image: http://www.robynrinehart.com/reflections.htmThanks for spotting my dopey mistake, and for your compliment. I did remember yesterday, after my last post , that I made the same blue some years back. Am up early this moring to correct it before the day begins. I have an open studio day today, and want it all working.

Re: the right hand click code. I know all you have to do is save the page and pull the graphics, but a lot don't, so I do it as a caution more than anything else. Thanks again. Quote

Of course, many people in your position "watermark" the images.Yes, I did that on my last site, but it does flaw the image and I do love it pristine.  Even I save the odd image, if it inspires me in some way, so I should reciprocate in some way and let it go.Fair enough - but you could use one of those non-detectable watermarks, provided by certain high-end graphics packages?  (Pretty easy to get around that kind of protection though.)I use Photoshop, and have never looked into that. Will get into 'Help' and have a look. I love this site! So many good ideas and generous people. Thanks

Solve : Won't show up in IE?

Answer»

I got a wierd thing going where an image won't show up in my project. It will show in every browser except Internet Explorer.

I don't get it! The full code for that image is:

Code: [Select]<img src="images/logo.png" alt="Logo" class="FloatLeft" />
The CSS that goes with it is:

Code: [Select]img.FloatLeft { float: left; margin: 1px; }
So what's the deal with IE? I know it understands the IMG tag!This may be caused by an obscure CSS problem - I'd need to look at your full CSS hierarchy in order to be able to comment.  Could you publish the page and stylesheet (at least temporarily) and post a link?Never mind, I got it.

Turns out, if I looked at the bar at the bottom I would have seen

"Downloading file:///C:/Documents and settings/Admin/Desktop/HTML projects..."

EDIT: What the *censored*? Why is this stickied?OK, it's balls-up again.

This one image loads fine in all browsers that are not MS-related. The images that do show up are ones I borrowed from FrontPage (I did not use FP to make the site!), and they'll show up fine across the board.

The image that won't show is Logo.png. The source code follows, as well as the CSS (I've only gotten STARTED on my mother's site, so I don't have a full hierarchy yet)

Oh, I also have a few reminders and un-set things (LIKE the title). This is because I use a program that applies a simple template code I can develop on. I've set the default to include the "If transitional" comment, the "Untitled" title, etc..

Code: [Select]<!-- Banner.html -->

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN"
    "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">

<html>

<head>
<title>Untitled</title>
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="banner.css" />
</head>
<body>
<!-- If Transitional, use <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> -->
<table class="invisible">
<tr>
<td><img src="buttons/Home_up.jpg" alt="Home" class="tab" /></td><td><img src="buttons/index_up.jpg" alt="Index" class="tab" /></td><td><img src="buttons/purchase_up.jpg" alt="Purchase Photo" class="tab" /></td><td><img src="buttons/contact_up.jpg" alt="Contact us" class="tab" /></td><td><img src="buttons/ad_up.jpg" alt="Advertise with us" /></td>
</tr>
</table>

<img src="images/logo.png" alt="Logo" class="FloatLeft" /><!-- Not showing up for some odd reason in any IE-based browser -->

<h1 class="center">House Of T'Kabi

</body>
</html>

Code: [Select]/* Banner.css */

body { background-color: black; }

h1 { color: white; font-size: 36pt; font-weight: bold; }

table.invisible { border-style: none; margin-left: 50%; }

*.center { text-align: center; }

img.FloatLeft { float: left; margin: 1px; }

td { margin: 0; padding: 0; }This is/was a sticky because of a bug that I keep mentioning...
Your CSS/Image problem may be caused by:

class="FloatLeft" />

I don't know much about CSS, but I don't think that your supposed to place the class inside the image location information... well Rob, is this right?

May I ask where your website is? Quote

Wrong, I'm afraid.  Class definitions can apply to ANY HTML element.

Oh...
Clarification time:
I thought that all elements were limited to certain settings. Is it all done through the browser?
And
CSS is just a bunch of individual style sheets with set values (the class=) so that you can have different items on your webpage POSITIONED in different areas, with fonts, and whatever else you specify...
I haven't experimented with CSS, is it recommended that I do? (I'm sorry, its 1:46AM now Rob, and I am starting to get tired. So much for Low Power M

and look at that, I start getting CH emails all the sudden!All web designers need to understand CSS.  Period.i love css im learning it right now along with javascript  Well, once we publish it we'll give you a link. But my boss (mom) wants a good portion of the site done before we publish it. (And I'd better work fast -- I'm working off my latest computer toy ) But once "we" do, I'll provide a link. I didn't MEAN publish the lot.  Just that page with ancillary graphics and stylesheet, to a temporary location.  You can PM the link to me if you like.  I won't tell."temporary location"? What if I zipped the folder and used YouSendIt to get you the files? It's not large, even UNZIPPED it's only 72.8 KB. Yeah, that's what I'll do. Check your PM box in a minute or two.I fixed it. I re-downloaded the same image (mom already has a temp site up, but it uses FrontPage) and named it the same name, with the same extension, in the same folder. It works in all browsers. Weird.Glad you got it sorted.  Sorry I'd not had a chance to look at this previously.  It was a bigger job than most of my replies to CH threads...

Solve : Why do Pics look bad on Front Page??

Answer»

Hi, this mystery has had me stumped for a long time. Why is it that I can scan a pic and it looks fine, crop and edit in Microsft PHOTO editor-still looks ok, but as soon as I put it on Front page the picture looks fuzzy, pixelated and basically terrible? Is it my scanner, Photo Editor or Front Page? What can I do to improve the situation? If it is my scanner-any suggestions on which ones are best for use on websites? I NOTICED other sites with very clear pictures on them so I know it's possible! Any help will be greatly appreciated.  Doesn't make sense.  What do your pics look like if you open them in Internet Explorer?  Should look the same as in FP.  How are putting the pics into FrontPage?  Copy and paste; or Insert, Picture, From File?  If you RIGHT click on a pic in FrontPage and select Picture Properties, what settings do you see there?  What file format are you using for pics?  .jpg, .gif, etc?Can you please post a screenshot of the distortion? (Print Screen, Ctrl-V in Paint, Save As.)Yes, tell me about it not making sense.  It does not matter if I copy or cut, paste or use Insert. The picture still looks bad on FrontPage. I am saving them as jpg. My scans always look good in the scanner software, but once again, bad in Frontpage and then on my website...    :-?Instead of Copying and paste why dont save as picture first and then go to FP and insert picture
Or use some software that let you edit the picture and save them in a different formattFrontPage sucks.  Try >NVu&LT;, which by the way is free.I'm looking into NVU...thanks for that. Has anyone else had problems with FrontPage pics looking bad? If anyone can help-please e-mail me at [email protected] and I will let you know what the web address is-I'd rather not post it here. I had trouble posting  a screen shot as I do not use Paint. Thanks for any help-it will be handy knowing what the problem is before I go spend money on a new scanner etc... :-? skyforme..... Lets have a go at this again .......
When you scan these pictures ......... what settings are you using on your scanner .........?
Resolution ........ ?

If you use a digital image and copy that image into Front Page is is ok ?

I use Front Page all the time and I have never had any issues when scanning a photo.

Can you post a example of one of the fuzzy images ...by taking a screen shot ..... or give us your website address and we can look .

dl65  Hi,
I usually use a 300 dpi when scanning photos from a catalog. I've tried 600 and even 1200 dpi and it made the file too big, made no difference in quality (on the website) or the image would be "tilted". I have some pics that I have "lifted" from other websites that look ok. If you'd like to see some examples of the poor picture quality here is a link to the website's worst offenders:

http://www.trinitytack.com/headstall.htm

                           or

http://www.trinitytack.com/BroncRidingGear.htm

The digital copies seem to be ok...The first link is headstalls and they came out the worst as the picture provided to me in the catalog was small.

Thanks for any help! skyforme......  Ok , I have had a look at the images in question .......
Here's what I think ........ There's nothing wrong with Front Page ......... It isnt causing this ....... ( I think its the source ) ...the catalogues ......
Unless the catalogue image is great quality to start with theres not a whole lot you can do about it other than play around with your scanner settings.........
or possibly look for another scanner driver . I have scanned 1000s of images from catalogues ........ But it took a lot of playing around to get a good image quality out ....... I use a resolution of 72 DPI to keep the file size small......set the scanner to 200 or 300 % ....and then use photoshop to reduce the image size to what I wanted . ( I found that would give me a acceptable image )  Have you tried using differant formats ......gif or tff .

What kind of a scanner are you using ?
What Twain ?

Is it possible to contact the people who produce the catalogue........ because you may be able to obtain a cd with the images and the quality issue will be resolved.  ( I did this on several occasions when I was building a website for a clock retailer .........)

dl65   skyforme......  One final thing we can look at is ........
Open the file that contains the scanned images ....(before you put them into Front Page .......) Pick any one of them ......... then take a screen shot of it .....using paint and save it onto your desktop ......... then use the attach option here and post it for us to see .....that will confirm my thoughts.

dl65  I couldn't figure out how to send a screenshot, but here is the latest of the bad pics. I don't use paint-I'm used to Photo Editor. I do most of my editing there and some of it in my scanner's PROGRAM. I use a Lexmark P6250. It's almost like something gets "refracted" once it goes from the scanner, to Photo Editor to FrontPage. I save all pics in jpg format.
By the way-I DID scan this same pic again and sent it to Paint and it looked even worse. Had "rainbows" going through it. The pic I attatched here is the better of the two using Phot Editor.Guess everyone gave up on this one. Thanks anyway.There are two possible reasons for this, I think.  Either moiré effect or defective scanner.  The moiré effect can be reduced quite simply: do a very high resolution effect, then blur the resultant image, then reduce to the desired size.  For web purposes, you will rarely need image dimensions beyond 800 pixels.

Solve : Show html code on your site??

Answer»

Is there some POSSIBLE way to show html code on your site?? Like for tutorials??
I f I want to show the code: WelcomE on my site, but not have it show up as a title just to show up as a code??? :-? :-? :-?You need to USE HTML ENTITIES instead of tags:

> = >
< = <

So instead of Welcome, you'd put <h1>Welcome</h1>

Google "html entities" and you'll FIND complete lists out there.

Solve : What do you think of this interactive guide??

Answer»

Check out this interactive guide on reinstalling drivers and fixing broken ones.
I think I did an excellent tedious job, but it seems to lack SOMETHING. What do you all think?
http://www.jessez.mbhosting.com/instructionals/drivers/i think you done a great job on that, what did you use to make it??
zylstra555......... Wow , you must have a lot of time on your hands .........
I started to go through it in detail....... but what struck me after clicking on all those links , was why am I doing all this clicking?
Lets take a hard look..... If one clicks on your link..... http://www.jessez.mbhosting.com/instructionals/drivers/   ........  the first thing you must do is click a link to be redirected ....... and then you must accept your terms to continue ....... ( THATS enough to discourage a lot of people ) ......
and then its ..... click , click , click , click , click , click ......... on and on ..... and then I got tired of clicking ....... so I left ........
So my advice to you is use the "KISS" principle ......... Keep It Simple Stupid.
The information , appears to all be there , however you have taken the art of clicking to a new level .
LOL ..... If your interested , it took 18 clicks ( I may have lost COUNT ) to get through the presentation ......   most people wont spend that much time looking for something ........ Why not present it as a slide show ? you can achieve the same result without all the clicking .......

dl65

I agree with dl65, but have some additional comments.  Another way of presenting this would be to just put all the images of the Windows panels on one page.  In other words, for Device Manager, just do a screen capture of Device Manager (Alt/Print Screen), not the entire desktop view.

I'll bet that could be done and keep the overall size of such a web page no larger than some of those individual pages you now have just to show one step.  Your pages range from about 160Kbytes to 250Kbytes.  Those are huge page files.

I also noticed that, on http://www.jessez.mbhosting.com/instructionals/drivers/present/index.htm, you said,

Note To Dial-Up Users:
The images in the next pages are higher detail, and may not work well on DSL. The HTML of the document has many numbers in it, and this can also result is a LONGER loading time.

So, a note to Dial-Up Users says ... "may not work well on DSL."  It doesn't make sense.  By the way, I'm on DSL and had no problems viewing it.  But, Dial-Up Users would need a lot of patience.

I agree with DL65 as well. The main point was to make an interactive presentation, and I do admin, it may have been better to do in a Slide Show. I used Dreamweaver to make this presentation. I completely messed up on the Dial-Up/DSL note, I didn't even notice it! I was making this late at night (not too late) so I suspect I was just side thinking about something else while writing that up. I can get rid of that whole agreement thing, I just have something against people who copy. I was just planning on guarding it with a PHP "Take down" script that I am sure to make if I go to collage for PHP and Web Design stuff.
Thanks for telling me about ALT+PrntScr, Soybean. I wasn't thinking about that while I was making it, but I would not have remembered the key combo anyways. Thanks all for your suggestions.

Did anyone have trouble with their browsers double clicking on: http://www.jessez.mbhosting.com/instructionals/drivers/present/4.htm# ?
And did the text show up in random places? I used Layers to present the text, and sometimes, I know that those do not always work. And did anyone get the "Wrong!" when clicking in the right area? (but the page suggesting it was the wrong place?)

Also, did anyone notice that on the last slide, (http://www.jessez.mbhosting.com/instructionals/drivers/present/11.htm) you could click on different areas of the page, like the Avast icons or the Photoshop, or the Windows Logo?

Solve : what does 1000email accounts w/webhosting mean??

Answer»

MY QUERY is related to:

http://www.hostmywebsitenow.com

under 'web HOSTING' click on 'hosting plans'

i WANT to GET the 'deluxe' PLAN with the Windows operating system cuz it comes with lots of space and bandwidth and it has a 'community server' software included that will let me setup a forum, blogging, and photo galleries.

My query is,do I have to use all of the 1000 email accounts that is included in the 'deluxe' package? Or can I just set-up a few if i want to and leave the rest there cuz i don't think i'd need 1000 email accounts.i probably only need 1.
maybe sum1 who has experience in this can help me as i'm a newbie to webhosting.What 1000 email accounts means is that you have 1000 emails at your disposal.  Usually how most web hosting compies work is this...
You have up to X number of email accounts.  If you do not use all of them you DO NOT lose them.

For example you said that you wanted to use only 1 email.  You will have 999 to use at some future time.  You may want to check with the hosting company, but usually they have a way that customers can create, edit and delete email accounts as needed.

Hope that helps.

Solve : having a lil error SQL Error : 1064?

Answer» SQL Error : 1064 You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ' 'Styles')' at line 1

INSERT INTO nuke_bbadmin_nav_module (user_id, modulname) VALUES (, 'Styles')

Line : 86
File : /home/worsqua/public_html/modules/Forums/admin/index.php

now i go into tge sql admin and i go to nuke_bbadmin_nav_module
then i guess i go to insert but i dont know what to do form there can anyone direct me pleaseBetter SQL would be:

INSERT INTO nuke_bbadmin_nav_module (user_id, modulname) VALUES ('', 'Styles');
or
INSERT INTO nuke_bbadmin_nav_module (user_id, modulname) VALUES (NULL, 'Styles');

Later VERSIONS of MySQL are stricter about this.umm thats not telling me much can u tell me how to inset thoughsHe's saying that where you normally type

INSERT INTO nuke_bbadmin_nav_module (user_id, modulname) VALUES (, 'Styles')

you should type one of those two he mentioned. Let me just hypothesise, since you didn't tell us what you're try to do: have you installed phpnukebb or something like that?  Are you trying to run it with the very latest version of MySQL?  Have you checked whether it's compatible?  Many things change between MySQL versions, and the developers of phpnuke may not have brought the software fully up to date as yet.  You can find the file referred to, go to line 86, and correct the error.  Or you can downgrade to an earlier MySQL - the one that phpnuke is designed for.yes the phpnuke is installed on the server it all works fine except when i go into the forums admin SECTION it gives me this error in the catagorie BOXS on the left if you know what im talking about

ok maybe this will help ask my question

i put (exzactly what) into (what on there)

lolCan you not just correct the error in the /home/worsqua/public_html/modules/Forums/admin/index.php file?  (See my first post.)83/     $no_page_header = TRUE;
84/
85/     $phpbb_root_path = "./../";
86/
87/     REQUIRE('./../extension.inc');
88/
89/    require('./pagestart.' . $phpEx);

i dont see nothing wrong :S

          Perhaps you should report this as a bug to the designers of the phpnuke software you're using?  In the meantime, you can turn off the strict ANSI mode in your my.cnf file.  Can't remember what the setting is called; you'll have to search for it in the file.

I have Dreamweaver, and I would like to know how to make it so a form send information to a specific email address. I have no idea whatsoever of how to do this.I had the same question a while ago. This will help you. Read the instructions carefully. http://www.webmaster-talk.com/php-forum/35929-feedback-form.html ... For other website questions, you might try http://www.webmaster-talk.com

FlameOK,
Looks simple and easy (not what I thought it would be)
I will mess around with that code and see if I can get it.
ThanksSure thing. Keep us posted on how you do. As usual, come back and see us if you have any more questions as well

FlameWhen I click "Send the Form" it goes the the Pagetwo.php, but gives me the code.

It shows this:

<?php

$body_of_message= $_POST['message']. "\n";
$body_of_message .= "Sent by " . $_POST['name'];
$subject= "Message from the feedback form";

if(mail("[email protected]",$subject,$body_of _message)) {
echo "Your message was sent.";
} else {
echo "There was a problem.";
};

?>

It does not send anything. What do I do to fix the problem?It's easy enough to design the form, but then you need a program to process the data sent by the form.  In this case, the data is being sent to a PHP script.  If you don't have a PHP-enabled webserver, this will not do you any good.Check into that. Who is your host? We need to make sure they support PHP... Good point Rob

FlameHey,

Well I'm in Information Technology and I have done a lot of dreamweaver and forms in my Web course. To send form information to an e-mail address, you have to include the following after your first or second heading in your code:

Some email servers will let you open the browser automatically when the button is pressed. Some you might not be able to. Also, depending on your e-mail configuration, you may receive warning dialog boxes or be given a chance to edit the e-mail message.

Hope it helps!
Sometimes seeing code is better at helping you learn it. Here is a simple form that is commented so you can see what to change and what each section does. This example does require you to have a PHP enabled server. Hope this helps!

Code: [Select]<?php
echo "      <center>";

//BEGIN PROCESSING EMAIL
if ($_POST['name']){

//CHECK YO SEE IF REQUIED FIELDS ARE EMPTY
      if(empty($_POST['name']) &#124;&#124; empty($_POST['email'])){

//IF A REQUIRED FIELD IS EMPTY SHOW THIS TO USER
      echo "      <div class='plaintext'><br />Please fill out the form completly</div><br />";

      }

//IF ALL FIELDS ARE FILLED OUT SEND THE MESSAGE INFORMATION
      else{
$where_form_is="http".($HTTP_SERVER_VARS["HTTPS"]=="on"?"s":"")."://".$SERVER_NAME.strrev(strstr(strrev($PHP_SELF),"/"));
$message="Name: ".$name."

?>(later responce, better server, more fun!)
OK, now I get this:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/jessez/public_html/password_content/process_request.php on line 39
Please post the section of code that includes that line.  I'll need to see the line immediately above it for debugging purposes.  Please clearly indicate which is the correct line, 'cause I ain't gonna count it for you.  Ok, I didn't know that I needed the same code for this. Since all of this, the file has been modified.
The new error code is this:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/jessez/public_html/password_content/process_request.php on line 8

Here's the actual code, with lines and numbers.
Code: [Select]1  |<p>
2  |  <?php
3  &#124;
4  &#124;$body_of_message= $_POST['message']. "\n";
5  &#124;$body_of_message .= "Sent by " . $_POST['name'];
6  &#124;$subject= "Message from the feedback form";
7  &#124;
8  &#124;if(mail("[email protected]",$subject,$body_of _message)) {
9  &#124;echo "Your message was sent.";
10&#124;} else {
11&#124;echo "There was a problem.";
12&#124;};
13&#124;
14&#124;?>
15|</p>
16|

And just for everyone's entertainment, a screenshot of this is includedGot it.  It was very hard to spot!

On the line if(mail("[email protected]",$subject,$body_of _message)) { you have a space in the middle of the variable name, "$body_of _message", before the second underscore.  Delete it.  "Your message was sent."
unless there's a hidden side to that message, everything is working. Thanks!

But that wasn't the only problem, the email address was wrong. But I fixed that to.

All seems to be well, now to see if it sends understandably.

Edit:
oh great.
All I see in the message is this:

Are you sure that POST variables are reaching this form?  You can test by echoing them within your script (commenting out the mail section until you have verified that part is working.I bet you that I dont have any "POST" variables. I bet there all set to "GET"

Lets find out...

connecting to remote server...
sorting list of remote folders...
It was set to "GET"
I changed it to "POST"
I will see what happens now.

-----POST MERGE-----

Changed "GET" to "POST" and it didnt work.

I did give the server time to update.

All I get is:

Date: 6/24/2006 14:01:14 -0500
From: Nobody <[email protected]>
To: [email protected]
Subject: Message from the feedback form  All headers

and nothing more. What could be the problem?

(BTW: IM not the best at this "form" stuff. It could just be a simple error or something missing. But I dont know what.)4| $body_of_message= $_POST['message']. "\n";
5| $body_of_message .= "Sent by" . $_POST['name'];

I see the words "Sent By" in each message I get.
Should the above lines have something different?At the top of your script please add the following: <?php print_r($_POST); ?>Please then show the results - this will print the contents of the $_POST array.This appears when you submit the form

Array

    [name_nickname] => name

I have made a special directory on my site to show what this is supposed to do, it contains most of the previous code, but was somewhat altered.

Solve : Cannot reach InvisionFree forum?

Answer»

There is a forum that I moderate at http://s12.invisionfree.com/TedworthPC/index.php.

I have visited the forum a number of times every day since it was launched some months ago.

However, when I try to REACH it today, I am unable to do so, and instead a capital 'H' appears in the pane where the forum ought to appear.

This notebook is swept for viruses and spyware every day, and appears to be clean.

Can anyone help ?I clicked your link and it comes up OK. I'm using Mozilla browser. I'm not FAMILIAR with Opera but it could be a changed setting or it could be hijacked.It TURNS out that ZoneAlarm was the culprit.  Why IF should SUDDENLY ANNOY ZA after months and months of harmony, I do not know.  Thank you for your suggestion.

Solve : Start own server?

Answer»

I'm here to ask a complicated question. I would like to start my own web server. So I can host a few sites, people can get some web space...

But how do you do this. I have a computer that is connected to the internet, and will be 24/7 online (because otherwise people wouldn't see there website). But I don't want that people can see my whole computer (my PERSONAL files, etc.) So how can I do this (under windows XP professional). I've read some things on the web, but nothing is clear. That's what I found so far:

You can use Apache web server (free)
You can use Cpanel...

Can anybody help me for more things (like making that you can't see my whole computer, making that I can give people web space...)

Thanx

Blackberry  8-)Why dont you lock your data with password protection
But that was a little help that give you, i dont much about your topic.

  I’m not sure how you would block your personal files, but I’m on the process of setting up my own server also. I’m using a separate computer, so I don’t have to worry bout the personal files. You can check out this page I found on how to set up a home server.

http://www.boutell.com/newfaq/creating/hostmyown.htmlEnsure your firewall blocks incoming requests on any port other than 80.  Then, your files can only be accessed REMOTELY if (a) you have a trojan or (b) you run an insecure web server.  Switch off file & print sharing on your PC, unless you particularly need it.  It is best running a web server behind a decent hardware firewall, but if you don't have one then you should TAKE these precautions.

Grab Apache, PHP5 and MySQL5 (all free), and you have everything you need in order to deploy a professional standard web server.You mentioned that you would be connected to the net 24/7 but you didn't mention if your ISP ALLOWS you to have a static IP or not. That is one thing you will need to know. While I have set up a few web servers myself I always used a LAMP solution (Linux Apache MySql PHP) mostly because they were free and stable. Lately I have been forced into doing some development on a Windoze box and find myself looking forward to getting back to my Linux server. But that's another story.. Anyhow for a cheap solution LAMP is the way to go IMO. A seperate box for your webserver is also the way to go IMO. Then there is also the simple idea of becoming a RESELLER of someone elses hosting service so you dont have to do anything other than design work. Quote

you didn't mention if your ISP allows you to have a static IP or not.
Not needed, with all the free dynamic DNS services out there.

Solve : Table inside Table troubles?

Answer»

Just built a web page for someone and am having trouble with 2 things:

1) The right-most column, the one that holds the menu does not fill the height of the outermost table.
    The site is located at http://www.designalternativesinc.com/about.htm
    All pages do this unless I tweak the height manually such as in the following code.

    The site is located at http://www.designalternativesinc.com/about.htm
    All pages do this unless I tweak the height manually such as in the following code.

&LT;td bgcolor="#04A4B4" width="167" height="1522" align="left" valign="top

I can't speak for others but I don't understand the question.  Do you want the menu to be higher, lower, vertically centered on the left side of the page?  What?

Quote
2) In this same page the writeup to the right of the pic does not allign to the left of the cell dispite all attempts to make it so. I have the space between the pic and writeup set by a table cell with width at 10, but it pushes over to the right.

I don't follow you here, either.  I see ...

... to the right of the pic and it IS left aligned.  So, what are you talking about?The containing Table has a cell that I wrote another table in it...the menu...
The table with the menu fails to automatically stretch to 100% height if I add aditional content to the left cell of the containing table.  The only way to make the bgcolor for the menu cel is to tweak it down to the pixel level each time the height of the left containing table changes.

Pt2

As you said the pic with writeup problem is as so:  I want a table with 3 cols

col1 width=184, col2 width=10, col3 width=the rest of the space to fill the containing cell.
What seems to happen is that the pic cel(184) is larger than 184, the 10px cell is then pushed over to the right and then even though the text is left alligned, the text is not close enough to the picture.For the menu, I think you need table row tags, or , for each menu item, not just one tag for the WHOLE menu table, which is what you have.  Thus, the coding for that table MIGHT be as follows:

                        "home_files/far_right_top.gif" />

My HTML SKILLS are rusty.  If I have a chance, I'll look at the rest of your layout and see whether I can offer any ideas on the other points you raised.
