Solve : Making logons?

Answer»

How is is that you would make a login and password for a web site. I know that there are some free password required re-directs (completely unsecure) that you can GET, but I would LIKE to know how you would make one yourself.What webserver/scripting language/database are you using?I don't have a web server.
I have the program Dreamweaver.
I do not have a database.
I take it that I need those, right?Indeed. You will need a web server (Do a web search for Apache, they have Windows and Linux versions) to test your pages. You will also need PHP. Google that as well. Dreamweaver creates HTML files but it is incapable of doing PHP and MySQL as far as I know - you'll need to do it yourself. If you get all three of these things properly set up, let me know how you did it. (Kidding, I think I got it set up)

We'll be here to assist you in setting up. OH, and if you're running Windows XP, then keep this tidbit in mind; it makes no sense now but it will LATER: THE MYSQL SERVICE MUST BE ENABLED. The lack of knowledge of this tidbit CAUSED robpomeroy and myself endless grief.Hey Dilbert, do you know of a HTML command(s) that will let you put a login script on your website?This is not something you can do just with HTML.  You need something (a configuration file or a program) at the server end to process logons.  E.g. Apache's .htaccess files, or a PHP script looking up user ids in a database.

You can simulate logins using javascript and cookies, but the result would be HIGHLY insecure.take a look here to see a simple solution until you learn how to do it yourself

Or does someone has a script that works? ( that automaticly works..., and resize all my pic's to 450-500)

nobody?nobody AT ALL :-?Stop BUMPING your thread please.  Programming queries inevitably take longer to get a response.  You need to practise patience,Urk.  Took a while to MAKE sense of that script.  I don't LIKE it!  Do you really want all images to be displayed indiscriminately at that size, irrespective of their width:height ratio?  Why not resize all the images first?  Where did you get the script from?  Where's the rest of it?

Do you have PHP-side scripting?  (I don't remember.)  If so, you could use a PHP script that calls the GD graphics libraries to create thumbnails/resize images as you wish, on demand.i SCANNED the web and found a script that works, thx anyway

Solve : text margins / page size?

Answer» OK, maybe this is just a stupid question because no-one else seems to have this problem but I'll ask anyway. *g*

I'm making my second webpage and this time I wanted to use a border type background.  My question is, how do I go about a MARGIN or something so that the text doesn't display over the border.  (I heard somwewhere that you can
    a couple of times until the text is indented enough but what about the RHS?)

    also... is there any way at all that I prevent PEOPLE from opening the page with really high-res or whatever and seeing the RHS of the border 2/3 of the way across the window. (not sure if that made any SENSE, but we'll see *g*)

Solve : Internet limt?

Answer»

is there a way that i can limt internet on a PC at night, but not on other pc's on the same network, the computer i want to limt is a windows 98se, its wireless network, i use a telwest modem then it gose in to a belkin wireless router then it gose in to about 5 pc in the same house.

any help would be GREATFUL.

KarlUnplug the wireless antenna at night?

GIVE us an idea of how you want to limit the internet, and why; that makes it easier to give suggestions for a solution.i only want to limt 1 pc just overnight. just no internet FULL stop on 1 pc, then restored the next day then limted at night just for from sun till thursday night.I suggest googling for "parental internet controls".  You'll turn up a lot of software, and possibly some if it can provide your desired functionality.  Bear in mind though that with Win98SE, most controls can be circumvented.  Where there's a will there's a way.  Removing the wireless aerial is more effective.McAfee Privacy Service will stop Internet usage during specified times with specified users, and its not required to install on all network PC's.

You could probably get a free trial...

Google

check out the settings in the router.
mine is a billion brand, (whats a billion, I hear you say)

Solve : How does one switch web hosts??

Answer»

I'm obviously new to the whole web site thing, but am really not happy with my current web host due to complete lack of support and other things. I would like to switch HOSTS and have been researching how to do that. I have read it is as simple as switching a DNS "number" (probably not the correct term), but on the other hand I have also read you have to download your entire site to your computer and then upload it to the new server. Which one is it? I would really prefer not have to download the site, if only for the fact that there is a suspected virus on my current server and I don't WANT to unwittingly download it with the site to my computer. I just got the last worm/virus/Trojan out a couple of days ago! What I need to know is the simplest way to switch hosts with the least amount of site downtime, and is doable by me, the complete newbie. Also please write your answers so even I will understand. :-?Well, you will have to download the website files to your computer and then upload them to the server of your new hosting service.  How else would those files get transferred to the server of your new hosting service?  There's no magical way to avoid downloading them from the old host and uploading them to the new one.

What makes you think you have "virus on my current server"?  And, if you merely download website files, I don't see how that could install a virus in your computer.  Are there any executable files among your web page files on the current host server?  If so, why?  Is it something you put there?  If not, then don't download such file(s).  Be sure your're only downloading the files that make your site work, which should be files you created.  You do know which files these are, right?

Once you get an account with a new hosting service, they should send you an email with details on how to access your new account via FTP and what domain name pointer code you need to setup with your domain name registrar.  They should also send you info on how you can upload your files and view your pages (only you, no one else) before going live with the site.  So, you should do this before deactivating your site on the old host server.

Once receive the domain name pointer code (this may not be the exact title of that code, but something similar), contact your domain registrar and change that code from the one for the old hosting service to the one for your new hosting service.  The change may not take effect for a day or two or longer.  But, once it does takes effect, the transition should be invisible to VISITORS to your site, and there should be no downtime.

How can you tell when your site is being displayed from the new web server?  Make a slight change in a page and upload it either to the old web server or the new one.  Let's say you upload the changed page to the new server.  When you view the page in your web browser and see the change, then you will know the change in domain name pointer code has taken effect and you can then close the old hosting account if you wish to do so.

Good answer, soybean.Thanks.   I had asked someone to help me with some of the scripts, and when she tried to access the site from her computer she was stopped by Norton with a MESSAGE about the Downloader virus being present. Two days later when I accessed my own site suddenly my computer had this same virus. It's taken a lot of work to get rid of it, and I'm just hesitant to do something that could re-infect my computer.

I don't think there are any executable files, unless I missed something. I didn't put any in, but I also didn't design the website and haven't gone through every file.There is a downloader zlob that shows up with McAffee, Norton and AVG that is actually a false positive...

I'm not sure how the hosting co. runs their protection schemes but ask for someone like a supervisor to see where to go from here.

patio.  8-)One of the biggest reasons why I want to switch web hosts is that the supervisor, who is also the site designer, denies that there is anything wrong, and then when I tried to follow up with him several times he ignored my emails and support requests.A very good reason to switch...someone new who is eager for your business could POSSIBLY be of much more help in assuring your site is clean and also the transfer process itself.

Good Luck.How did you create your web pages?  You don't already have the files on your hard drive from when you created them?I bought the site already put together. It was done from a template, and I can go in and customize most of it. So no, I don't have the files already on my computer.Is this a Geocities web account?  Is your website's URL www.mysite.com or something like www.Geocities.com/~mysite/index.htm?  You've been using some type of online HTML editor, where you update pages via a web browser interface, right?  Looks like you've got some learning curve ahead of you in order to get into a much different mode of operation for your website.It's not a geocities site, but it does use an online html editor. The original seller and host is storefrontx.com.Do you have a registered domain name?  Have you thought about how you're going to manage your website with a new web hosting service?  As far as I know, you won't be able to take their template with you when you switch web hosts.  You'll have to either find another web host which provides an online html editor, if that's what you want, or learn the conventional way of developing web pages, which is to develop them on your computer and then upload them to your web server.  Either way, you'll have to download the files from the old host unless you just start from scratch with a new web host that offers an online html editor and upload all your photos again.

Solve : Error Page?

Answer»

Can custom error page be a deleted page?

I mean if i pick a link for a page  which is

http://www.myownsite.com/page55.html

and then post this link to certain place,

and then if i delete that link from the control panel of my site,

after that, if somebody click on the link, on that place where i posted it,

will he be shown the 404 error message?

I'm afraid I don't understand your question at all.  COULD you rephrase?Following are the various Error pages:

[size=16]400 (Bad request)
401 (Authorization required)
403 (Forbidden)
404 (Wrong page)
500 (Internal server error)
[/size]

If somebody types a wrong URL, then he gets the 404 message.

Suppose a webpage of your site has the URL as:

http://www.yourownsite.com/ppp/jojo1.html

and if somebody type it in his address bar as:

http://www.yourownsite.com/ppp/jojo.html

or as:

http://www.yourownsite.com/ppp/jojo1.htm

Then he is typing the wrong URL, and he would get the following message

[size=26]Not Found[/size]
[size=18]The requested URL /ppp/jojo.html was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache/1.3.37 Server at www.yourownsite.com Port 80[/size]

My question is:

if i post the link
http://www.yourownsite.com/ppp/jojo1.html

at some classified site

and after that I go to my site's control panel and delete the webpage
http://www.yourownsite.com/ppp/jojo1.html

so that it is not in my site anymore,

what typeof error message anyone who clicks on the link
http://www.yourownsite.com/ppp/jojo1.html

on that classified site would RECEIVE?

Would it be a

404 error message
400 error message
500 error message

This I am asking because i have already posted a link on some site and now want to delete the link.

Depending on what type of message it is i canreconfigure the error page HTML code.

Gotcha.  Most web SERVERS would return a 404 in this case.  404 SIMPLY means the page isn't there (whether or not it previously existed).

Solve : Download web site onto CD?

Answer»

I would like to download a website onto a cd for customer viewing.  How can I do this?  Do I have to have a special software program?yoyoma......... Ah .......why not simply provide the URL ......

DL65  Because the CDs are going to be given out at a trade showPull-up the site... File -> Save As... Then burn that to a CD... That what you WANT?

[glb]Flame[/glb]I want to be able to save the entire site on a cd so that the user can open the cd and see a static site that looks just like what is on line.I think that would be it then... It would include the PAGE, graphics, codes, etc. This will only copy one specific page though.... You want the page or the whole site? Also, once saved, this page will not be able to get updated... To copy the whole site, you will need to copy every page like this...

[glb]Flame[/glb]That does not work.  Thanks anyway.Is this your website?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Use a program called "webcopier", its pretty cheap but it does the trick. I've USED it before, you basically visit the site you want in webcopier's browser and you click download and it copies the entire thing...

Solve : Add a photo in the navigation frame?

Answer»

Hi

I can add a photo to the nav area, however it reveals only the top 3 inches of the photo in this rectangular frame. I would like to use it as a background in that area (it is a photo of my city downtown)

Any help is appreciated

ThanksYou want to use the picture as a background in one of the frames? You can simply use the background tag if I remember correctly..

Kelly - a link to the page would be helpful (as ever ).  There are quite a few different ways of achieving this.

You're not still using FrontPage are you?

  yeah I'm still using FrontPage, but upgraded to 2003

Thanks for looking.
I want the picture squeezed into the nav. area. (behind the tabs)

Here is a link:

http://www.techtogo.ca

Kelly
Gotcha.

Using FrontPage makes it a little tricky...  Serious web design works best in code form.

You need to have a look at your web site in Firefox; the tabs are misaligned, overlapping the black text banner.  Remember not to design for just one browser - Firefox's market share has increased significantly, and OPERA is also nipping at Internet Explorer's heels.

Anyway, to your problem.  My preferred method for adding a background is to use CSS - this behaviour is compatible with all current browsers including IE6.  To use one background for a section, use div tags for that section, thus:

Code: [Select]<div style='background-image:url("/images/myimage.jpg");'>
Put whatever you want here.
</div>
Read a bit more about the CSS for backgrounds >here<Thanks Rob, I will try it and post my results.

I did try NVU for a short bit. but we weren't compatible

and I do understand the Front Page Boos' .

Could you recommend a good teaching book about code. And what code do you recommend for beginners

And until I get the code figured out, would it look okay to have a "home" page that gives a few browsers to choose from that the viewer uses that opens to pages that look good in that browser.

Are you still with me?

I think that Sams' Teach Yourself HTML or something like that would be a good place to start - then you would find NVu or even Notepad++ made more sense.  But I do accept that not everyone's mind works that WAY.

Quote

You could... you could even use a bit of javascript or server-side scripting to re-direct to a different page/folder tree according to the browser in use, but that's a lot more cumbersome than simply getting the page right in the first place by using a standards-compliant web editor.  Bear in mind that if your advertising an I.T. business, your web site VISITORS will have certain expectations.  Your web site should really be above average and work WELL for the vast majority of visitors.

Kelly, if ever the budget would stretch to Dreamweaver, I think you'd get on much better with that.  It provides the WYSIWYG editor that you prefer, but creates much better code.  Any version from 2 ONWARDS would be fine for your purposes - you could pick version 2 up for $25.00 on eBay.

What was the problem with NVu by the way?  Was it the lack of "whizzy bits"?  (It's the whizzy bits that let FrontPage down, ultimately.)

Incidentally, before anyone accuses me of being biased against MS products, no, it's just Frontpage.  I've tried out MS's new web design product, Web Expression (currently in beta), and it's miles ahead of Frontpage.  Looks like it will be a very good product.

Solve : Full screen (F11)?

Answer»

Is there a way I could have it that as soon as a user connected to my site their screen would be maximized? (F11 in Internet Explorer BTW) If so is there a way the PAGE would automatically autohide the menubar after being maximized. I'm trying to create a more in depth experience.

Are these ideas even possible or are these inaccesible BROWSER settings I can't change from my pages script?As far as I know, the user has to do this himself.I can think of all sorts of reasons why you shouldn't be able to take over someone's browser in this way.  Nope.  Not possible. Wraith.......
Quote

I'm trying to create a more in depth experience.

If Viewing your site in  full screen ( F11) .....how about putting a big bold note on your Index.html   saying for best viewing use.... full screen ( F11)

Then it's their choice....... or consider redesigning your website.

dl65  You could alternatively use a javascript-launched popup window with minimal controls.  But your users may not like the fact that they have no back button, no refresh button, etc.  Still, if you're determined to do this, a javascript-launched window is the way to go since you may have some degree of control over the window size etc.  Don't rely on this though - many people (me included) disable such javascript in their browser.Ugh, that's too bad.  :-/

Anyway I have another few questions.

Question 1: How do I get my index.html's background pic to fit to the screen. (preferably in all resolutions) Right now the top left is the only part on the screen.

Question 2: Is there a way I could have a user click on a link and be sent to their "My Computer". What is the path of My Computer anyway.

Quote

How do I change the titles bar text? I can do that in my script right?
You don't have to. At the top of your page, put down this (assuming you're not using CSS):

Code: [Select]<size="3"><p><b>For best browsing experience, please press F11 to make your browser full-screen.</b></p></size>
If you are using CSS, you can set up a

style that makes it bold.

Good luck. 8-)Ok, great.   Quote

Question 1: How do I get my index.html's background pic to fit to the screen. (preferably in all resolutions) Right now the top left is the only part on the screen.
It seems to me that what you really want to achieve would be better done in Flash, which provides that kind of flexibility.  In plain HTML, resizing images dynamically requires javascript, is not guaranteed, and SOMETIMES gives poor results.  That said, if you're using a background image, possibly a repeating pattern is better.

Certain HTML layouts can look as though they have auto-resizing images.  Look at my web site for example (see the link in my sig).  Re-size the browser window and look what happens to the string of mini photos, top centre.  That kind of thing is done with CSS or tables.

Quote
Question 2: Is there a way I could have a user click on a link and be sent to their "My Computer". What is the path of My Computer anyway.
Why do you want to do this?  Please remember that browsers are only supposed to be able to interact with an operating system in a very limited fashion.  Anything else poses a security RISK.  You could probably achieve your desired result using an ActiveX control - that would involve the users downloading some code to their computers.  But that kind of thing tends to lock your users into using a particular browser - again, not desireable. Quote
Why do you want to do this?

Well, I guess I don't really want to, but I was just curious if My Computer had a path like "C:\*\*" or if it was an .exe or something.
The reason I'm interested in having them access their computer is because I'm sort of creating a game site for my friends. We all play Halo PC Custom Edition and I want to put maps to download on the site. So I wanted there to be a shortcut to their "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition\maps." Although I suppose I could just do this with a hyperlink.

What exactly is Active X?Wraith...... What size monitor are you using to design your site ?

I would suggest reducing the size of the images .......until you dont have to use the side to side navigation bar....... This is from your site ...just reduced ......  I just resized it to fit the available window ....( I still have it a bit too small but you can get the idea)

dl65  Thanks, I'll KEEP working.   Quote
I wanted there to be a shortcut to their "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition\maps." Although I suppose I could just do this with a hyperlink.
I think a download link would be appropriate, and let your users decide where to store stuff.

Imagine if web sites were able to store programs anywhere on a user's hard drive.  What could WIN.COM be replaced with?  EXPLORER.EXE?  Etc.

Quote
What exactly is Active X?
The short answer: It's a way of inserting program code into a web page.  Only works in browsers that allow it.  i.e. Internet Explorer.  Generally considered a security risk, and now turned off by default in IE7 and IE6 WinXP SP2.

>The long answer<Oh, I don't know if you're past this or not, but when I said "at the top of the page" I meant right under the tag. I read my post and realized that I posted in a way that could be misinterpreted.

I was just wondering how i could do the same?I think here we may need some additional information.  Perhaps you can post a link to your forum so that we can be of assistance.I'd head right on over to http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/ and ASK that question.  I'll bet it's not an UNCOMMON question.You need to learn how to use the forum's templating system.  You'll find lots of HELP FILES, resources, and user-submitted templates at the phpBB support sites, no doubt.alot of helper REPLYING here

Solve : Logo use for a client?

Answer»

I designed a logo for a client using Photoshop, and they like it and want to use it for various things.

My problem is that I don't know how to get it to them in a way that they can use it on things. They don't have Photoshop, so sending the PSD isn't an option, and I just don't have experience with this sort of thing.

Does ANYONE have any idea what I can do?In the Save As menu, change the file type from PSD to PNG. That'll save it as a stand-alone image.You need a bit more information from your clients.  What size do they need the final image to be; what will they be using it for; what will the final medium be (print/screen); what resolution is appropriate to the medium, etc.

In this kind of scenario a designer will typically supply the finished artwork at several different sizes, in several different formats.  Think PNG, GIF and JPEG at resolutions of 72, 96 and 300 dpi with pixel dimensions circa 100, 500 and up to 2000 or so. Quote

If you have an older version of Photoshop, you may want to click File, then Export and choose the options...
(If you need to make it smaller, you can click File, Save for Web)
File Formats you should choose:
PNG, GIF, JPG, JPEG, or (help us all!) bmp Quote

This is very helpful (as usual) thank you!

She said that she's mostly going to be using it on print like brochures, signs, business cards etc.

I probably should know more about it, but what's the deal with dpi? About all I know is that it's a CRUCIAL part of print graphics, and that it STANDS for 'dots per inch'. I SUPPOSE I'll look up the information when I get a chance.

Well anyway, thanks everyone for helping. I should have assumed that the answer was something like that. My brain doesn't seem to be working.

I wish I could help out with some of questions here too, but most of them are way over my head :[For an intro to DPI, try the >Wikipedia< (the article is informative, but a little opinionated, surprise surprise).  In bitmap-based computer graphics, DPI is little more than a suggestion.  A 1000x1000 pixel image at 72DPI has exectly the same number of pixels and hence detail as a 1000x1000 pixel image at 300DPI.  The 300DPI image will tend to appear smaller however because of the suggestion that each pixel be printer/displayed 1/300 of an inch apart.

For your application, if the brochures/signs are going to be professionally printed, then aim for a very large image size - 3000x3000 pixels (bitmap images) or A4 at 900DPI (vector-based graphics) - unless you happen to know that the signs will be quite large - in which case you may need to up the detail even more.

If the stuff is going to be printer in-house, then you could ask the client what the maximum resolution and PAPER size is of her best printer.  Then you can target the image size to that printer.  Feel free to post back if you need a hand with the calculations.

Solve : Browser problem, please Help!?

Answer»

I was making my site with HTML and saving and then refreshing the page to see how it looked, then I realized something, if I took something off (deleted text or picture) and saved it and then went a refreshed the page in the browser all the stuff I got rid of was still there. What do I do?NVM, I found out the problem.... I just had one of those moments  If you don't mind my ASKING: What was the problem?When I would save my HTML file and go into the browser to look at it wouldn't be updated. I saved the file twice, one in the C drive and one in my personal folder. The one I updated was in my folder, but when I went to look at it I click on the one in the C drive, which I dont update.

But I do have another problem.... The one that I saved in the C drive(The one I dont update) has the pictures on there that I want. But the one I update doesn't have the pictures on it, do you know why that is?Well, do you have the APPROPRIATE tag? If you don't you just need to insert the code. If you do have an IMG tag where it should be, please post the picture code so we can take a look. It might be a spelling error or syntax problem.

tag but you forgot to close it before the closing tag, one less tag to deal with.
6: You are using a mix of % and px for width formatting I always put px after non % values just so there is no confusion.
7: Having a .css file would be much easier for you to maintain RATHER than using tags.

Please don't think I am ripping you apart, I am just very *censored* about things like this. Something to remember is that poor code formatting can and does effect the way your page will look across multiple browsers. Also if you are just starting out it is much easier to make sure that you do it right while learning so that you don't have to retrain yourself. These all may seem like little things but when you work in an environment where there are literally thousands of pages something as SIMPLE as proper code formatting can make a big difference.Don't worry about being *censored*. The only reason I didn't point all that out was because I thought the bare minimum for getting this to work would be sufficient.

If you are interested in CSS (an excellent tool that all browsers can understand), I have a tutorial in my signature. Not very advanced, just beginner to intermediate concepts with examples. [email protected] is *censored* about case; I am *censored* about making sure it all works in all browsers for a long time. Browser compatibility is key!

Solve : message box on front of site?

Answer»

Hi there. I have a style question (I think it has to do with that). I would like to have a page, where you see on the center of the screen a red text box that is showed on the front of the site, and if you click on ok, you see my normal site again, and the message box desapair. Does anyone knows how to do this (perhaps with style.css)

P.S. If my explenation wasn't that clear watch the picture I paintedHow about:

<div style='position: absolute; z-index: 10; left: 300px; top:200px;
            width:200px; border: 3px outset #000000;
            background-color: #FF5050; padding: 5px;'
    onClick='javascript: this.style.display="none";'>
  <p>Read this message then click anywhere in this box to dismiss...</p>
</div>
That isn't really a good code. But it really is the text box I want, but my problem is, my whole website is displayed in that box now. And that isn't really my intintion. I want that the box comes on the front (RIGHT in the center, like your code does) and that if you clikc on it that it disapears (like your code does) but that the message is in the front, and that my whole website can be on the back....Did you miss the closing tag?  Put that right at the start or right at the end of your HTML, and it should work as you want it to.right, my fault... Do you know how you let disapear this box, by an link example if I click on the word close in the box, it disapearsYes, you can try this:

<div style='position: absolute; z-index: 10; left: 300px; top:200px;
              width:200px; border: 3px outset #000000;
              background-color: #FF5050; padding: 5px;'
    id='tobeclosed'>
  <p>Read this message...</p>
  <p onClick='javascript: document.getElementById("tobeclosed").style.display="none";'>
    Close
  <p>
</div>
Perfect, your the best  . Do you know (because this box was a saluting box) how that you make that the box only shows the first thime when I come on that page (that shows the saluting box).Absolutely.  PHP + cookies.  I'll put something together, but it probably won't be until tomorrow.  Feel free to experiment in the meantime.Okay, the cookie based code must be right at the top of the page, before any headers are sent from the server.  The first lines of your php script should be something like:

<?php
$expiry = 2147483647; // expiry date of cookie - 19/01/2038
$now = time();

if (isset($_COOKIE['seenmessage']))
{
  // Check the value of the cookie.  If it's less than
  // 20 seconds ago, show the message anyway
  if ($now < ($_COOKIE['seenmessage'] + 20))
  {
    $showmessage = true;
  } ELSE {
    $showmessage = false;
  }
} else {
  // No cookie - so set it; and show the message
  $showmessage = true;
  setcookie('seenmessage', $now, $expiry);
}
?>

Then in the part of the page where you show the message, wrap it all in a php test:

<?php
if ($showmessage)
{
?>
<div style='position: absolute; z-index: 10; left: 300px; top:200px;
               width:200px; border: 3px outset #000000;
               background-color: #FF5050; padding: 5px;'
     id='tobeclosed'>
   <p>Read this message...</p>
   <p onClick='javascript: document.getElementById("tobeclosed").style.display="none";'>
     Close
   <p>
 </div>
<?php
}
?>
perfect, do you know a code (under php4) that deletes the cookie if you click on a link (so that if i click on log out, the cookie deletes itselves, and when I LOGIN back, I see the message again)To delete a cookie, you have to unset its value.  You can only mess with cookies before any headers are sent, therefore you'd have to USE a link that diverts to another page.  E.g.:

<a href='clearcookie.php'>Clear cookie[/url]

And the clearcookie.php has at the start, e.g.:

<?php

setcookie('seenmessage', false);

?>

I have a new question. How can you show the message again (if it is CLOSED)? I'd like to have the following thing:

?">+[/url] text

If you push on the plus, it wil show the message: text
If you push a second time, the plus will become a min ( - ) and than the message: ok will be shown
If you push again on the min, it become a plus, and the message text will be shown
....

Does anybody know this how to do

P.S. If you can help me, please use tables, so I can put more text (even perhaps pictures) in the box..

Thanx

blackberry  8-)I know how to do this, but give me a while.  It's Easter weekend.  Is there anything you don't know Rob?
Take a well earned break. Hah.  Fed, my knowledge is painfully limited.  There are plenty of people on this site far more competent than I - you included.

But as for this area which I do understand...

Blackberry - so we're attacking this from a slightly different angle now.  Here's a link to a site I designed quite a while ago.  It's poor.  But in my defence, I am currently working on a complete update: Ellis & Co..  (The new site that I'm working on is here, if you're interested.)

The thing that you want to look at is the menu on the left hand side - the folder icons, etc.  This is pretty similar to what you want to achieve, and you can adapt the javascript to suit you.  The script is >here<.  Please keep the copyright notice intact if you use this as-is, or retain some kind of accreditation if you modify the code a little.

Solve : Renders fine in FF but not IE?

Answer»

I've had it to here with these friggin' pictures.

I've got three pictures I'm supposed to apply to a template, along with some text. I can get them to render fine, but not in IE. In IE they appear stretched, as if they are too long for their width. I didn't do this; in fact, I specified percentages of image size so that they'd be relatively scaled. What on earth is going on, here?

Here's my source code for this page:

Code: [Select]<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN"

      <p>Cavitt Bridge is an 82-foot bridge built in 1943 with round logs for the upper and lower chords.  Floyd C. Frear, who designed the bridge, claimed that with proper maintenance the bridge would last a half century. It has already exceeded that estimate and still stands as testament to the tenacity of covered bridges.  The bridge spans Little River where it is joined by Cavitt Creek.  There are murals painted on the abutments that add touch of class to a favorite swimming spot for the residents.  Robert Cavitt was a bachelor who settled on this tributary of Little River.<img src="../images/cavitt_2.png" alt="Cavitt Bridge" width="40%" height="40%" class="floatleft" /></p>

<img src="../images/cavitt_3.png" alt="Cavitt Bridge" height="40%" width="40%" />

</body>
</html>

I don't really have the asterisks... Is the page out on the web yet?  Can you post the URL?I removed the height attrubute and it's working OK now. How, I have no freaking idea. :-? :-? :-?

EDIT: Maybe I can't use both height and width with percentages... :-? Quote

Maybe I can't use both height and width with percentages... :-?
There's nothing wrong, strictly speaking, with USING percentages - it just won't do what you want.  The percentage refers to the containing element (the

tag), not the image.  The

tag is expandable unless constrained by CSS is its own container.  If you need to display an image at a particular percentage of its size, you can use javascript to set the height and width attributes, or better yet, PHP.

But you shouldn't really be using HTML to scale down images.  It's ineffecient.  If you want the image to be smaller, you should make it smaller, rather than cause people to download more than their browsers will actually be displaying.  Trust me, I know what you mean. But I'm on a deadline ATM, a 4-day deadline, so I'm taking a few shortcuts... for now. When I get the site up I'll start resizing images, but that's a tall order in itself, and I got a long to-do list... But top priority for Maintinence Period I is to resize all seventy-something images to actual size. :-/You have a Linux box running, yes?  It'll take about 20 seconds to produce images at exactly the size you need, using the convert program from the ImageMagick toolkit.

Here's a simple script called "resize" that I wrote and use.  The 1024x1024 just makes those the maximum height and width.  The images remain in proportion.  Make sure you have a folder "done" within the folder where you run this script:
#!/bin/sh
#
# eg resize *.jpg

for file in "[email protected]"
do
  convert "$file" -resize 1024x1024 "done/$file"
doneIf you have photo editing software, perhaps that came with a digital camera, see whether it has batch resizing CAPABILITY.  The FinePix Viewer program that came with my camera has that capability.  ALSO, the excellent freeware photo editor IrfanView appears to have that feature.  I haven't actually used IrfanView but I see batch processing listed on What is IrfanView?.  Keep in mind it is FREEWARE (for non-commercial use).Soybean, "Freeware" doesn't imply that it can't be used for commercial purposes...?Right, it doesn't necessarily mean that.  But, IrFanView specifically says that on their site.  Here's the exact wording on one page: "IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for non-commercial use) graphic viewer for Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003."
Aha.  Thankee!

Solve : xml?

Answer»

Does ANYONE know if you can have a link in an xml page.  If so, a sample would be nice.  I have a project (web page) to hand in, and I would like to put some snippet of xml on the page.

Thanks.....You could possibly use a link in XML, but it's not worth the effort. You're better off coding it into the (X)HTML itself.

See, first you have to define it in XML as TEXT, that text being the (X)HTML code. Then, you'd have to use a XLT file to place it in the exact spot... but since you're typing the code anyway, you may as well just put it in the (X)HTML. Quote

Does anyone know if you can have a link in an xml page.

An XML is not actually a webpage, but a feed ( a nice way to automatically
insert latest post or entry ).

An XML feed has "item" or "feed entry" as INDIVIDUAL part of it and each
item contains

1)title (title of the post or entry)
2)description (description of the post
3) link (URL of the post)

The link part will show you the actual link.

For running XML, you need to put XML code on a separate webpage and that would end in .xml EXTENSION(hence it not remains a webpage, but becomes a feed). Then you can put an XML button (pointing to that xml link) on your other webpage. When anyone click s on the XML button he gets the feed.

You can study any XML tutorial available on the web.

Solve : Change username?

Answer»

As you have followed a few posts of me you would see that I'm writing a login-script. First of all I would thank robpomeroy for all the help I had from him. (secuirity for the script, and help with pictures in the script!). Now I have a new question. I would like that my users can change there name (not  login name, just there name).

On all the pages there name is DISPLAYED by this code:
Code: [Select]include("username.txt");?>

and in the txt file this is written:
Code: [Select]<?php echo'username'?>

Now I would like to have that it is possible to change this name. So I would like to have a textform where you can type your name and a submit button and than your name is changed (in the text file). No I don't have mysql on my server, not even msql. But the thing I actually want is: that the name you typed in the box, wil be changed in the textfile. Example if you type Blackberry and then submit, that the textfile , will be changed to something like...

Code: [Select]<?
rename("/dir/username.txt", "/dir/newNAME.txt");
$read = file_get_contents(username.txt);
$replace = str_replace("username", "newName", "$read");
$fp = fopen("username.txt", "W");
fputs($fp, $replace);
fclose($fp);
?>

if you dont understand a command ther explained on php.net or i'll be happy to fit it in your code if you posted it?

http://something like...

[code]
<?
rename("/dir/username.txt", "/dir/newNAME.txt");
$read = file_get_contents(username.txt);
$replace = str_replace("username", "newName", "$read");
$fp = fopen("username.txt", "w");
fputs($fp, $replace);
fclose($fp);
?>
[/code]

if you dont understand a command ther explained on php.net or i'll be happy to fit it in your code if you posted it?

[url]http://127.0.0.1/index.php
Quote
something like...

Code: [Select]<?
rename("/dir/username.txt", "/dir/newNAME.txt");
$read = file_get_contents(username.txt);
$replace = str_replace("username", "newName", "$read");
$fp = fopen("username.txt", "w");
fputs($fp, $replace);
fclose($fp);
?>

thanx for the code... But it isn't exactly what I want to. I want that DE username.txt file stays with the same name, only the text within it should change. This is my submit form

<body>

<form name="post" method="post" action="config.php">

<head>

<title></title>

</head>

&nbsp;

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p><font face="Arial" color="#000080">Type your new name </font></p>

<p><font face="Arial" size="2"> <input type="text" name="name" value="" maxlength="90" size= 22 tabindex="1">

<input type="submit" name="Submit" value="Toevoegen" tabindex="1">

</font>

</form>

</body>

if you dont understand a command ther explained on php.net or i'll be happy to fit it in your code if you posted it?
then simply take away the part that changes the text file,
config.php
Code: [Select]<?

$nename = $_POST['name']
$read = file_get_contents(username.txt);
$replace = str_replace("username", "$nename", "$read");
$fp = fopen("username.txt", "w");
fputs($fp, $replace);
fclose($fp);
?>
Thank you for the scrip, but when I install it, it doesn't work....  . I don't know why but the file config.php gives just a white screen. Btw I think your script only change the word USERNAME if it is in the textfile. But what if I want to change my name again after username: example to blackberry, how do I change that then....

greetz

blackberry  8-)It only changes the word username to a new word, and it appers blank because it dosent desply any html. Presumabley you already no the name in the textfile if ther logged in?
if not i have some code i created and you can use it to find out the username in the file.
At the MOMENT i'm at collage i'll post it when i get home Quote

about your html your right, sorry about that one.... But it stays with one problem, it can't change to the name, it just become username, how many thimes I type an other name in the TEXTBOX... Do you know what the problem is?
Itstead of the text file containg echo (name) just put the name in it.
eg "Fred"

once done that just get the context of that file and echo it.
Code: [Select]<?
$read = file_get_contents(username.txt);
echo ("$read");
?>
config.php
Code: [Select]<?

$newname = $_POST['name']

$fp = fopen("username.txt", "w");
fputs($fp, $replace);
fclose($fp);

I don't know what I do wrong but it still doesn't work... Now the reading file that shows the name don't work anymore. Can you give me some advice about what I may be doing wrongI don't think this will work the way you want it to, blackberry.  The contents of the username.txt file will be served up to all visitors to your web site.  So if one person changes it, every other person seeing the next page will be faced with the wrong username.

How about instead using a cookie stored on the user's PC?  No need to change any file on your server then.  Their usernames get stored as a cookie on their PC - you can check for the presence of it and respond accordingly.

What do you think?

Incidentally, when you were seeing a white page aboe, that may also have been because there was an error in the php - a missing semicolon at the end of the first line.  If display_errors is set to off in php.ini, then you will not get a report - just a blank page.

Solve : IE displays correctly..Firefox does not?

Answer»

I have about 4 web sites and they all display properly in both of the above mentioned browsers. I recently uploaded a site and it is perfect (in my EYES) . However it only displays correctly in IE, in FireFox half of the files are MISSING and misaligned.

Any idea how this happened ?

Any idea how to correct this?

Thanks,
KellyEveryone's definition of correct is different. How is the site on IE different?

FlameIt is exactly how I designed it in IE

Searching it with firefox ---> more than half of the content is missing and the pics are not alligned.
What kind of content do you have? Flash animations?

FlameNo. I will pm you a linkWow. Forget everything else I said. This is a problem. Let me see if I can find a way to fix it... Not having MUCH luck however...  :-/

FlameNice mess huh?

Oh, it's a beautiful mess. I'm at a loss with this one

Flame

Wow I didn't think that you were stumpable.

Thanks for looking  I don't work much with Firefox

FlameOne of the biggest challenges of a HTML DESIGNER is that you must make it compliant with as many browsers as possible. Without seeing the source code I don't know if you comply with W3C standards or not, but I know that for a time even MSNBC has severe alignment problems, as well as missing content in FireFox. I am tempted to say "welcome to the nightmare that is compatibility issues". In fact, I will/just did. Compatibility is a nightmare for some content. Would you be willing to PM me a link? I'll view the page in IE, Firefox, and Opera, and the source code... but I won't be able to check tonight. In GMT-8 my day is over, and I'll be heading for bed soon after I peruse the forums one more time.Is this address a secret? Is it porn? Send me the link too. I'd also be interested in seeing the link.  Cross-browser compatibility is one of my bugbears.As would I. You know who also could shine some light on this topic is admin. He had some problems getting the site to work with different browsers. I'm sure he could help...

FlameUm...Nope not porn

Should the PLATFORM read SERVER ASP instead of IE ?

Solve : FrontPage Images appear "flat"?

Answer»

I use PhotoShop CS2 to process my images, "save to web" as an optimized JPEG usually at around 75 or 80, and use FrontPage 2003 to "insert" the images into my website.

Somehow by the time the images get from PhotoShop to FrontPage they SEEM to lose most of their "punch"--colors are dull and the images appear flat. I've even tried attaching the ICC profile from PhotoShop, but not much changes.

As you can imagine, I spend a huge amount of time processing images to make them look good, so I'm totally baffled by what's happening. What am I missing here?

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer!

DennisThis is ringing bells - I'm sure someone else reported a similar problem some months ago.  How are you getting the pictures into FrontPage?  By cutting and pasting?  The best thing to do is to export from PhotoShop and just upload those files directly to your website, by FTP, WebDAV or whatever.  Use a dedicated program for this, such as FTPSurfer (see the software FAQ - LINK in my signature).  Then give FrontPage the image's location on the server, not on your hard DRIVE.  That way you can prevent FP from interfering with the image in any way.

Surely FP doesn't understand ICC?

In case anyone else is wondering, I just don't have the energy to get on my anti-FrontPage soapbox tonight...When you insert an image into FrontPage (I'm referring to FrontPage 2000, Normal view), right click on it and select Picture Properties.  Do you see an option to set JPEG Quality?  What is that setting?I also use f/p 2002, and when I save a pic. I save it to 'My Pictures' then insert them into my web, after which Front Page asks me if I want to save them to my web-folder.. and they seem ok ! .. I think the more you mess about with pics, the worse they are.. just my oppinion ! I like to KEEP thing as simple as possible.

Solve : Text by nav bar?

Answer»

Im tring to get text out by my navigation bar but every TIME I try to do this the text is either entered into the nnavigation bar or it is put underneath it. In other words I want the text and the nav bar to be on the same line. Here is the nav bar code:

row 1, column 1
row 2, column 1
row 3, column 1
row 4, column 1
row 5, column 1
row 6, column 1
row 7, column 1
row 8, column 1
row 9, column 1
row 10, column 1
The secret is CSS (cascading style sheets).  Try changing this: <table border="3" bordercolor="Black" width="20%" bgcolor="00FF00">to this: <table border="3" bordercolor="Black" width="20%"
 bgcolor="00FF00" style='float: left;'>"bordercolor": what browsers recognise that attribute?I lost some of the post. Its cut off. can you type the part after bgcolor?

And what do you mean what browser recognises the "bordercolor"? Quote
I lost some of the post. Its cut off. can you type the part after bgcolor?
I've amended the post.  You should be able to see it now.

Quote
And what do you mean what browser recognises the "bordercolor"?
It's not a valid attribute according to the HTML 4 specification.  >See here<.  You should bookmark the >WDG HTML 4.0 Reference< - it's completely invaluable.

Then bookmark the >CSS 2.0 reference< and google for some tutorials on CSS.Muncill, why are you using this:

to DISPLAY this:
Hey thanks rob. And it works in my browser  :-/ .

Quote
Muncill, why are you using this:

to display this:

And why does it matter, it still works.

Why waste the bandwidth?  It's a simple matter to resize the image to the actual size of the avatar and then USE that image.  38,892 bytes vs. 2,778.Hey rob I want to put a table under a table on the right side, and Im using the code you gave me but when I put the other table under the other one it puts one table by the other instead of under it I have a pic of what it LOOKS like and what I want it to look like. This is how it is.Here is the way i want it.There are three main solutions to this:
  • use a right floated table as well as a left floated table
  • use nested tables
  • use a CSS layout
Your intended design doesn't seem to be too complicated, so I would go for the third option.  Stu Nicholls is the recognised grandmaster of CSS, and if you view the source of >this page< you can find out how to make a layout like yours WORK.  And >here< is a slightly more complex CSS method.[/highlight]
row 1, column 1
row 2, column 1
row 3, column 1
row 4, column 1
row 5, column 1

The highlight is part I took from the source code. Is that where I would put it?
No.  If you're using those CSS designs, just copy the entire page.  Then insert your tables, whole, into the left and right DIVs.o, ok.

Solve : Web Crawler?

Answer»

I love to experiment with web stuff. My new goal (sort of) is to make a web crawler that will go through a bunch of pages, find URL's, and link them.

I would like to make a web crawler that can get a large amount of URL's, and save them in a simple TEXT file.

How would I do this?
(Not looking for anything fancy, I've got limited bandwidth, you know. )
I can't remember where you're up to - have you got PHP under your belt yet?

First thing to bear in mind: you are considering USING an automated process to retrieve information from web sites.  Some WEBMASTERS would consider that abuse of their bandwidth, never mind yours.    You should really ensure that whatever code you write respects robots.txt files - but you're on your own there.  I am not an expert when it comes to their syntax.

Have a look at >the PHP filesystem reference< - in particular fopen, which can open a url, not just a file.  You can do more complex stuff with the >streams< library.Looks a bit complicated...
You're not JOKING!

Solve : CREATING YOUR OWN FORUM??

Answer»

[size=14]Hi, I am fairly new to the website building industry and cannot figure out how to create my own forum with my own pictures, links and THREADS.  I have read a little bit on how to do it, but it doesn't offer too much help.  Can anyone please help me figure this out?

THANKS
[/size]Just find a hosting service that provides a forum.  For example, see http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/web-hosting-plans.html.  A Message Board is available, even with the Starter plan which only costs $4/month.  Once you open an account, you can easily install a forum from your web cPanel (CONTROL panel).  You will need some time to learn how to use the forum admin panel to add forum sections, etc.Alternatively, if you want to learn how to create your own forum, first set aside at LEAST 4 months to learning PHP, then set aside at least 8 months to programming your forum.

Or use your current hosting, and download some forum software. Like the dreaded YaBB (which I happen to like)
www.yabbforum.com
(This is a YaBB forum)

Solve : localhost Problem?

Answer»

Hello,

Back in 2001 the company hosting my site went out of business and later I dropped the URL for the site www.sperainc.com

My problem is I would like to reset the localhost on my computer. I am unable to use the current setting at spera01.sperainc.com [127.0.0.1]

My research for this has uncovered the following:

Default name describing the local computer address also known as the loopback address of the computer. For example typing ping localhost would ping the local IP address of 127.0.0.1 (the loopback address).

I am having a problem using visual studios for ASP.NET projects because the current http://localhost/etc

The message I receive is this:

The default web access mode for this project is SET to file share, but the project folder at http://localhost/MyWebCalculator cannot be opened with the path c:\webworkshop\www\MyWebCalculator

The error RETURNED was:

Unable to create web project MyWebCalculator. Unable to create the web location c:\webworkshop\www\MyWebCalculator
Access is Denied

That location was used many YEARS ago with a dreamweaver project and I would like to shift my focus from that drive and folder to d:\localhost(new folder).

I am at a loss as to how to proceed.

All assistance will be APPRECIATED!

Thanks,
John

Solve : sound help for begginer?

Answer»

I just got a microphone and was wonderin what kind of program i need to record SOMTHING thats pretty long. And if there is anywebsites i can use to upload what i record to put on my webpage.Windows has a sound recorder that may be sufficient.  In Win XP, GO to Start, All Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, and open Sound Recorder.

How did you upload your existing web PAGES?have you speak in to the microphone and the computer output the sound?a good free way is to use any of the instant messengers (yahoo, msn...). You can open up and voice chat and record away for as long as you WANT. Then you can use smart FTP to upload it.

The html codes for getting your sound file to play are eays to find with a yahoo search. depending on what file type you use.

Solve : Domain forwarding?

Answer»

I have a website already made and Im planning to by a .com for it but I have a question.came I just by a .com that when someone types it in it will go to my already made site?

I was thinking GoDaddy might do this but im not sure. Just wondering.I'll assume you're going to use a commercial hosting SERVICE for your site.  Once you've registered, i.e. bought, your domain name on GoDaddy.com - which I recommend - and you've created an ACCOUNT with a hosting service, the hosting service will send you a code, called the DNS pointer or SOMETHING like that, that you need to associate with your domain name by logging onto GoDaddy.  If you later CHANGE to a different hosting service, that new hosting service will send you a different DNS pointer code and you'll have to logon to your GoDaddy account and change it.

Solve : Placing XML doc into html?

I have a web site which I created using dreamweaver and I WOULD like to insert an xml document into the web page.  It is to be PLACED between

but it isn't displaying.  The xml is already validated; and I am using css to display.  This is a class project.

I'm not sure if this is what you NEED, but I think it might be: Transforming XML Documents into HTML.I don't think so... What I am doing or hope to do is display some text (xml) which is being referenced in the html doc.Probably a server-side parser is the way to go.  PHP has XML-fluent libraries and classes.

Solve : dbl. monitors in systray. What do the mean??

Answer»

I have asked this at various places but never got a satisfactory answer. I know they indicate an INTERNET connection but the point is at what speed?
Some say they indicate the initial connection speed established with your ISP but that this is only a 'rough' guide and not always reliable. At speed test sites I've tried the results are always diff. to what the "hover over the monitors" box indicatetes.
Others say they are indication of internal system speed, ie, the speed at which is incoming DATA is processed in the MACHINE but then why does it say X Kbits data in X Kbits data out at this or that speed. ANYONE know? I belive zillions of people use the hover the POINTER over the monitors to get their internet speed but we are all wrong!

Any ideas. Any Gurus, anyone even hazard a guess would be nice. Cheers. m

Solve : How format DVD download to website??

Answer»

A friend of mine is in a band and wants to know "how" to download his bands dvd to their website and also to his myspace page?  I had to use infraview  to get my pictures on my own myspace but I don't know what to tell him about dvd's?
A friend of his said he WOULD have to buy something for 30 bucks to do it, I told him people on  [highlight]puterhope [/highlight] would have an answer for us 4- free ~ > ?   :-/I supposed you'd have to use something like Nero to rip the entire DVD to an image file (e.g. .iso) - but since DVDs tend to be quite large, this may not be the best method of promulgating the video.  How LONG is it?You could always use a video converter, to convert the dvd to a mere media type format such as .avi or .wmv. The only bad thing is the only video converters I find cost $$$ sorry  :-/. Then you could just link his myspace page to the website to show the video. Hope this helps  . I know of a good one pm me for info. Quote

I supposed you'd have to use something like Nero to rip the entire DVD to an image file (e.g. .iso) - but since DVDs tend to be quite large, this may not be the best method of promulgating the video.  How long is it?

Hey Rob*
Well with these 2 RESPONSES at this point I am guessing his best luck would be like  ( 1 or 2 at the most) [highlight]songs[/highlight]?  Would it have been easier if it was VHS or is that still difficult like the dvd?  He is gonna check out this site tonight so any ideas will suffice,  THANKS.......
EVEN compressed, you have to allow for about 1GB per half hour, for full-screen - or around 100MB for a three minute, single-song video.  That said, if you're prepared to compromise a little (restrict screen size to, say 640x480) this can be reduced.  The best option is to provide a streamed video, so that the end user doesn't have to download the lot before viewing it.  This can only be done if the webserver supports streaming though.

There are many different streaming technologies and servers (Flash, RealMedia, Windows Media formats, etc) so I would start by asking which (if any) of these the webserver supports.  Then you can use something like Windows Media Encoder (free download from MS) to convert the video into streamed format.

VHS is not an option; it is not a compressed format.

Solve : Turning my computer into a webserver?

Answer»

I've never tried linux and I'd like to try makeing my own server to host a website, The computer I want to use the specs are in my sig. Now I was wondering Whats the best linux for this and im pretty sure Id be able to dual BOOT between the server and XP right or would I be better off Just having the computer running one OS.
If you installed Linux to use it for your server, how would then also use Windows and still keep your website up?

Have you considered just creating an account with a hosting service?  Some are quite inexpensive, down around $4/mo. Quote

If you installed Linux to use it for your server, how would then also use Windows and still keep your website up?
A good question.  You can run two OSes simultaneously through virtualisation (look for MS's Virtual PC in the software FAQ).  But I wouldn't recommend this on your machine - that 256MB is barely enough to run XP, never mind XP and something else.  Besides, servers should really be dedicated to the job; not sharing workstation duties.

Try CentOS.  It's an excellent choice for a Linux server.Well I dont need to have two operating systems on the comp because my family has more then one comp either then the one im turning into the server. Thanks for the advice I think i'll try to the one Rob recommended.You could always try a free web server, like apache or Xerver.
Xerver is one that I use and would recommend because because it is completely user friendly and easily setup.Now, I must disagree with what it takes to run XP.

I've seen XP Pro run on 64MB of RAM at school here
Slow, but it worksOh! Try http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html Xampp, it has PHP, Apache, and a WHOLE bunch of stuff in it. You might like it.

Also, Webmin might be a good WAY to manage the site. (But you would have to ask Rob how to get it out of Linux, he told me once before)
