A Disaster Caused by Flood

Floods are common in India. They are a natural calamity. They occur on account of heavy rainfall. They cause a huge loss of life and property. Last year in the months of June and July, there were no rains. But in the beginning of September, it rained cats and dogs for twenty days in a row. The water in the river Chambal began to rise and very soon it crossed the danger point.

The scene of the Chambal was very alarming and tragic. Thousands of men, women and children were rendered homeless. We saw a number of thatches and animals, floating on the water. They were being swept away in the current of the water. Crops were damaged, trees were uprooted, houses were washed away, cattle were drowned. Heavy loss of life and property took place and epidemic broke out.

Thousands of people lost their lives in the floods of Uttarakhand and Jammu-Kashmir in the last few years. We cannot check extensive rains. Man is powerless in this respect. To avoid the danger of the flood, big tanks and canals should be made. Big dams should be constructed to prevent the flooding of rivers. Thus, we will be able to control them to some extent.

बाढ़ से हुई आपदा

बाढ़ की विनाश लीला भारत में बाढ़े सामान्य हैं। वे प्राकृतिक आपदा हैं। वे भारी वर्षा के कारण आती हैं। वे जीवन व सम्पत्ति को बड़ा नुकसान पहुँचाती हैं।

पिछले वर्ष जून व जुलाई के महीनों में बिल्कुल वर्षा नहीं हुई। लेकिन सितम्बर के प्रारम्भ में, लगातार बीस दिन तक मूसलाधार वर्षा हुई। चम्बल नदी में पानी बढ़ने लगा और जल्दी ही यह खतरे के निशान से ऊपर आ गया।

चम्बल नदी का दृश्य अति चेताने वाला व दु:खद था। हजारों पुरुष, स्त्री व बच्चे बेघर हो गये। हमने बहुत-से छप्पर व पशु, पानी पर तैरते हुए देखे। वे पानी की धारा के द्वारा बहाये ले जा रहे थे। फसलें नष्ट हो गईं, पेड़ जड़ से उखड़ गये, घर बह गये, मवेशी डूब गये। जीवन व सम्पत्ति का भारी नुकसान हुआ और महामारी फैल गई।

गतवर्षों में उत्तराखण्ड व जम्मू कश्मीर में आई बाढ़ के कारण हजारों लोगों की जान चली गई। हम अत्यधिक वर्षा को रोक नहीं सकते। इस विषय में मनुष्य शक्तिहीन है। बाढ़ के खतरे से बचने के लिए बड़े-बड़े तालाब और नहरें बनायी जानी चाहिये। बाढ़ वाली नदियों के पानी को रोकने के लिए बड़े-बड़े बाँध बनाये जाने चाहिए। तभी हम कुछ सीमा तक बाढ़ पर नियन्त्रण रख पायेंगे।
