Solve : Which driver do I need to install.? |
Answer» I just did a complete reinstall of my operating system and am trying to figure out which drivers to reinstall. I am running with windows XP SP2. My computer is a Toshiba Satellite A105-S4054. The list of drivers can be found here: As Patio has already stated the chipset driver from the Toshiba site should be the best. I was having a hard time finding it there so I sent you to Intel. What I see at Toshiba (Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility) appears to be the same thing you already received from intel but I could be wrong. Although the versions are different, everything seems to be working fine (except what I mention in the post directly above) so I think I will just keep the Intel Chipset. Any advice on the above post would be appreciated. DLoad the xLite Codec pack and see if that solves the DVD playback issue... Codecs like drivers should never cost money.Do you have the discs that came with your computer? Look for the WINDVD, it should be included with it.For the ethernet controller you might try this |

Solve : Black and white laptop screen? |
Answer» Hello, new here, but thats not what matters. Go to the website of your laptop manufacturer and download and install the current driver for your video card. On a side note, I never heard of Bullguard. Ok i will head on and try that. Also Bullguard could maybe only be known here, living in Denmark so you know.Nova Welcome Aboard ! As a rule of thumb and for future reference...when it comes to laptops Drivers should always come from the laptop manuf. SITE. This is because they submit specs they want to component manuf. and then Author the drivers for those components themselves... Desktop machines you can go at component level and they should be fine. Quote from: patio on January 20, 2010, 07:56:49 AM As a rule of thumb and for future reference...when it comes to laptops Drivers should always come from the laptop manuf. site. Ok, i will be remembering that. And thanks Allan i did not really think on going onto the manufacturer site, but it did work.Good - glad it's working again. |

Solve : CD/ROM driver? |
Answer» Hi. |

Solve : bios install? |
Answer» Hi all, most motherboard have a small ROM chip as well though that, if the normal BIOS is corrupted can be used to flash straight from a floppy. Doesn't have anything else; just the flashing ROM. Really? I wasn't aware of that, of course I'd never had a need to find it. Can you supply some DOCUMENTATION I could peruse through?Actually, I was only partially correct. It's not actually a seperate chip, but rather a special area in the start of the BIOS called the Boot Block. http://forum.overclock3d.net/showthread.php?324-Motherboard-BIOS-Flashing-Guide Quote
Even so, newer PCs literally have two Duplicate BIOS chips. Mine has two, so if a flash fails or something it runs off the backup. Nice, thanks for the heads up BC. I thanked you for that one, you know, in case you care Quote from: Quantos on January 14, 2010, 08:39:36 PM Really?BC is no too sharp on hard ware. OK, he got you the docs. A portion of the FLASH is "blown" at the factory so that it ca not be erased. The remainder can still be flashed. That part is ROM. The ROM will READ a prepared floppy and re do the flash. This is documented somewhere in the Intel motherboards. Don't know which and not sure if it is still done that way. Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 14, 2010, 08:49:54 PM BC is no too sharp on hard ware. not too sharp... but that's essentially what I just said! that "blown" flash that cannot be erased is the boot block... unless of course this is your dictation program causing confusion Yes, BC. Basically you had it right. That is old technology and I was just talking off the top of my head. Little bit of research with Google shows that everybody is repeating the same words that they found somewhere about the accidental rewrite of the BIOS. According to one popular source there may have been only one well known virus that actually attacked the flash BIOS. I think it was called the Chernobyl virus. But it only affected certain Intel motherboards anyway. I just did a Google search on some of this to try to bring my memory back and it appears that now days they think the possibility of a BIOS virus is rather rare. This is because most i386 operating systems will not allow direct access to the hardware that does the flash. So you have to boot the system with the DOS floppy and run the program in that environment. That being said, it would seem very unlikely that the OP had a virus in his firmware. And I scratched out that part where I said you were too sharp on hardware. Actually you did WHETHER rather well. If he's running a 286 he'd have to worry about a BIOS infection....unlikely. Bios & Boot Sector viruses are indeed extremely rare. Then again, so is a response from the OP.Hi All, Sorry I didn't resond to all you kind people, but I do have to work. I found the problem, besides a virus I also have a bad HDD. Problem solved. Thanks for your help |

Solve : Computer not accepting Flash Drive? |
Answer» Product Type: PNY USB Flash Drive and Tribeca USB Flash Drive COMPUTER: Dell Inspiron 530S Processor: Intell Pentium OS: Windows Vista First this is what happened... I plug in the flash drive and the installation begins. A little bit in, the computer tells me that it cannot find the driver software for the device. Says to choose search on my computer for driver software, but ACCORDING to the companies I contacted that make both of the flash drives they don't HAVE driver software, it should just recognize the drive and I can use it just fine. It doesn't. So one company said, you have a defective device, (the Tribeca one) Even though I PLUGGED it into my other computer, a new mini laptop by Asus with Windows SP, and it worked. I haven't tried the current flash drive in the other computer that the other flash drive worked in because it needs to be plugged into the charger for 8 hours before I can use it again. But it seems the problem lies with my main computer, the Dell. So I have since restarted my computer many TIMES over the past 3 days. Today I tried plugging in the new flash drive, (the PNY) and there was no window popping up acknowledging device being connected. Great. I contact the company and they say to try all sorts of things to get it to work after going into control panel, windows, devices, all sorts of setting that would take too long to post here. NOTHING worked. So while I wait for them to respond, I'm here, HOPING so much that someone can help me. Thanks to anyone who's read all this and can help. I will very much appreciate help, so will my wallet! - Jennifer This is the second flash drive (i previously bought one of a different brand) that encountered the same problem. I was told by the other flash drive's brand customer service that it was a defective flash drive. When I plug other devices into my usb ports everything else will work. I've tried all 4 of my usb ports to make this work and it won't. What do I do?? - JenniferSorry, the mini laptop is a Windows XP system. That other was a typo. There have been a number of BIOS updates, some of which resolve USB issues. http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/previousversions.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&SystemID=INSP_DSKTP_D530S&releaseid=R212148&formatid=-1&deviceid=14181&formatcnt=1&dateid=-1&releasetype=BIOS&servicetag=&typeid=-1&catid=-1&libid=1&impid=-1&osl=en&vercnt=9&os=WLHafter the driver update there was no change in the problem. Solve : Air Pace WiFi & Win 7? |
Answer» I have an Abit Air Pace WiFi which worked fine under Vista Premium 64 Bit. I have just upgraded to Windows 7 and when I d/loaded drivers from Abit and installed I got a BSOD as it installed. Windows said the Manu does not support this device any more. Seems a shame as this is a PCIex1 interface device which is supposed to be more modern than a PCI one. Any suggestions anyone? Thanks AlexmaIs Win732bit or 64 ? ? Alexma, I am in much the same boat except I brought my WLP-01 new to go into my i7 / win 7 new build so it has never worked !Thanks for your input ISAW. I solved the problem easily (for me!) by installing it in my other PC (the Winfast/Foxconn) running Vista 64bit. WORKS a treat now! Sorry this does not solve the problem for you THOUGH. Cheers Alexma Quote from: ISAW on November 09, 2009, 05:10:39 AM Alexma, I am in much the same boat except I brought my WLP-01 new to go into my i7 / win 7 new build so it has never worked !My WLP-01 runs very fine with Win7/32 I installed the windows built in driver manually. Select vendor "Atheros communications" and the model "AR5006 802.11a/b/g-WiFi Adapter from Atheros" The chipset on the WLP-01 is an Atheros 5006. To set to accesspoint MODE you can try the file "atheros_ar5xxx_8.0.0.238-seven.zip" at *Blocked Russian URL*" because it has 28MB and perhaps this mode is available but i am not sure.I have an Abit Air Pace WiFi and couldn't instal uinder windows 7 x86, I made it think it was installung under xp and works ok. Solve : HELP!! (Display Driver Stopped Responding And Has Recovered and Slow Games)? |
Answer» Okay for Christmas I got a new laptop, (an Alienware M15x) which was amazing, and I do LOVE this thing, although I've been having quite a few problems recently with it, first of a lot of my games seem to have a very low frame rate when running on the settings that the game recommends. I have a NVIDIA GeForce 240M which should be enough to run games like 'Left 4 Dead 2' on its highest graphics. So I was just on MSN last night and then everything got worse, my DISPLAY driver stopped responding and recovered, not just once, but countless times. my screen just went black flashed a few times and then went back to normal. |

Solve : Windows XP from scratch and Graphics Driver won't install, please help.? |
Answer» Hello there, Where are you grabbing the graphics drivers from ? ?I got the drivers from the Intel website by following the prompts at (hope its the right drivers lol): http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Desktop+Boards&ProductLine=Intel%c2%ae+865+Chipset+Family+Boards&ProductProduct=Intel%c2%ae+Desktop+Board+D865GLC&OSVersion=Windows+XP+Professional*&DownloadType=Drivers ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Broni, I'm not sure why the chipset is not listed sorry, perhaps I didnt grab all the info, but anway, I have followed your advice and have attached the new report from Everest Ultimate Edition. Just one THING I've noticed: I went into Device Manager and saw something called "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)" with a yellow question mark beside it, and Everest said I had a NVidia GEFORCE 6200 card inside. I found the driver for this on the net, but before I download it, I just thought I would ask if it would be worth downloading and installing it, and is this the problem I've been having all along with the graphics driver not installing (ie: that I was trying to install Intel's Extreme Graphics driver when I really should have been installing NVidia's GeForce 6200 driver)? Cheers. [Saving space, attachment deleted by admin] Quote saw something called "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)" with a yellow question mark beside itYeah, means, your display works only on default Windows driver and yes, Everest report says: nVIDIA GeForce 6200 Go for it.BTW, the chipset is Intel Springdale-G i865GALL FIXED THANKS EVERYBODY FOR YOUR HELP!Nice We LOVE success stories here ! ! |

Solve : Potential BIOS problem? |
Answer» I've got a real head-splitter that I hope someone can help me with. ...As I referenced above, I removed both RAIDed drives from the the machine and swapped in a completely different drive to try and get it to boot, but was getting the same errors.New drive had Windows already installed and then you got the BSOD? Or you tried to install it and then got the BSOD? Quote from: patio on December 07, 2009, 07:29:25 AM Because it's still looking for a RAID array possibly... Is there something in the BIOS I have to change on that? Quote New drive had Windows already installed and then you got the BSOD? Or you tried to install it and then got the BSOD? New drive is new drive. I set the BIOS to boot from the DVD with a Windows disc in it. Trying to install onto the new drive and getting to the select drive for install screen and getting the same STOP errors as before. Thanks again for the help. Quote from: unclefloyd on December 07, 2009, 05:37:37 PM Is there something in the BIOS I have to change on that?...If it's anything like one of mine, in BIOS, go to Integrated Peripherals, SATA Controller Mode; change from RAID to IDEHaven't had a chance to futz with this with work and the holidays, but all my settings are correct, and I'm still getting the same disk error. Any other ideas? Thanks again.Okay. Here's every last bit of data I have on this. I would have given up on this thing a while ago, except that I just downloaded some vacation pictures to it a day or so before it died and didn't have the chance to back them up yet. RAID array identifies as healthy. Upon booting in *any* mode with the RAID array attached, one of four things happens: - It gets to the XP load screen and hangs (this is a relatively new development) - I get the BAD_POOL_CALLER STOP 0x000000c2 BSOD - I get the STOP 0x000000024 NTFS.SB5 BSOD - I get the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQL STOP 0x0000000A BSOD - I get the STOP 0x0000007E BSOD If I turn off the array and turn back on IDE drives, when I put in a blank new drive or a drive with windows already formatted, I get a disc read error (so I can't get another drive in there to do recovery off the RAID discs). Any ideas graciously appreciated.Bad RAM module? |

Solve : USB 1.1 help..? |
Answer» I was wondering if ANYONE can help me. A friends computer is about 10 years old and they have Windows XP running on it. I bought my friend a WEBCAM for christmas but it won't work on their computer. After some research we FOUND out that their usb drive is a 1.1 and the webcam needs it to be a 2.0 in order to work. I bought a 2.0 usb extender hoping that it WOULD make the webcam work but it doesn't. It says that because the original usb drive is a 1.1 then it will convert the extender to a 1.1 even though its a 2.0 |

Solve : how do you see what is on the recovery partition in windows 7:? |
Answer» I have a Toshiba Satellite a505-s6960. It came with VISTA and also an up grade for windows 7. When the geek squad put in windows 7 they did not give me a clean copy of windows 7, it was put on with all the stuff that came with the computer. I NEED to find how to copy the drivers I need to run the system and the internet and the oem's for the computer. Some of the programs that the computer came with I want to use again. So how do I get them to be saved so I can Pick and choose which ones I want? I want the original Toshiba programs that came with the computer. I don't need the trial ones. Also I have data and pictures that need to be saved too. Also when I save these programs and drivers I would like to be able to know what each one is INSTEAD of just a number or something else I do not understand. I have formatted and put in new OS systems before but always have a hard time when it comes to getting important things NEEDED back in. Some of the programs that the computer came with I want to use again. We don't know these programs. What are they?Yes, I was about to say that too. Did the Geek Squid tell you this would happen? They should have been more help. Please check this out: Quote ...When you're switching to a new PC, Windows Easy Transfer helps you transfer your files, email, pictures, and settings. In Windows 7, it lives up to the "easy" in its name. ...Notice Microsoft does NOT say it transfers programs. I need to save some of the drivers needed to run the computer after I get the clean copy of windows don't I? What about the toshiba burning roms and what I would need to get on the internet and Ethernet drivers and things like that. I just need to see the drivers and programs on the recovery disk to know what I want to keep and discard.Check your Device Manager first for any missing drivers. Win 7 has lots of generic drivers compatible assuming that your machine is Win 7 capable. You could always go to the support site and save any drivers needed for your machine if needed. I don't understand why you don't just uninstall the unwanted software. You won't see a performance INCREASE from all the extra work. |

Solve : Intel 82810 Graphics Driver? |
Answer» I have a question, I have the Intel 82810 Graphics Controller on my HP Pavilion 512n. I am getting lines that run up and down through the monitor every now and then. It is an intermittent problem, but when I install the proper driver/controller, it asks if i want to install an old version over a new version. ...The graphics is integrated into the motherboard. Do I need to add a graphics card to solve this problem, or what? I cannot afford to buy or build a new system right now, no job to pay for it. I also do not like 64bit OS's that seems to be the only ones I can find already installed. I have tried to install some old graphics cards with no success. I have never seen anything like this before. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!Doesn't sound like a driver issue. If the monitor is a CRT, that could be the problem. You MIGHT be able to find a CRT monitor for free. In your situation, I would spend no money & learn to live with what I have.I have tried other CRT monitors, and they do the same thing. Like I said, I have never seen anything like this before. I don't want to short myself on a bill and buy a LED monitor if a PCI card will work.First of all, see, if same thing happens in SAFE mode. If it does, then, most likely, you have video chip problem. If it doesn't, then, most likely, you have a driver problem. It may be overheating as well. What brand and model of the COMPUTER is it?HP Pavilion 512n is the MAKE and model. I will have to try that about Safe Mode and see. I know it does it with other monitors I have here. I am thinking that I may need to buy a reconditioned motherboard of the same brand and chipset if it is the video chip. Today I noticed that in Device Manager there are three drivers listed, I set it to the one from Microsoft and so far the problem has not shown up.I wouldn't recommend reconditioned for a MBoard...price out a new replacement instead. |

Answer» I tried to read through the threads & can't find anything. My E Drive has been acting funny, not reading cds (to copy on) and now it won't even open. Any suggestions as to what to do?I'll take a guess that e: drive is your optical drive, correct? Does the drive work at boot (insert a bootable disc, make sure the drive is at the top of the bios boot order, and reboot)?Restart, try it!Ok, You're going to have to go a bit slower with me. The drive is the one where you burn CDs (to back up files) or use to install software. I have a Gateway Laptop. My Computer says Drive:E. I tried restarting and that doesn't work, not sure what the other suggestion was saying to do, I'm not that computer savvy. It will read software, like to install STUFF, but won't recognize a blank disc.First of all, ignore any posts by cloudy3 |

Solve : Trust TB-7300 design tablet driver caused big problem? |
Answer» Hi all, ...I tried to restart in safe mode so I can go back to previous set point (I always create restore point before installing anything). When I do this my pc screen is full of text,You did nothing wrong, other than not keeping image backups of your hard drive. http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp What concerns me is the bolded item above. I would attempt a REPAIR Install rather than a Reinstall. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmThanks again Computer_Commando The "multi(0)disk(0)rdisc(0)partition(1)..." part when I tried to go to safe mode was a shock to me, never had this happen before, could there be a really serious issue not resolved by an install/repair? Thanks for the link to image backup software. I was aware of image backups but never realised that they could be used for situations where PC is stuck in a loop/ wont boot. After the back up do I just put in the DVD/CD when there is a problem like the one I am having This is very useful for me as the driver conflict could apen again. "I would attempt a Repair Install rather than a Reinstall." If you recommend a repair install then that is what I will TRY now! Thanks for the help, will let you know how it goes!"I would attempt a Repair Install rather than a Reinstall." This was some good advice, I repaired as per the instructions you gave me and I am back in to windows I have a few questions about what you think is best to do now. When I repaired windows it froze at the "please wait" screen and I manually restarted (pressed reset switch). It worked 2nd time. I believe this may be because of driver PUTTING in corrupt registry entry? So, should I (after taking an image backup of hard drive ) A: Try to go back to pre driver install using "system restore" B: Try to uninstall/ disable driver for graphics tablet? C: Do nothing and install rest of software for graphics tablet? D: Try to find the corrupt registry entry, if there is one, and delete it? I could not find the drivers on 1st glance, does a windows repair delete or "fix" things like this? I really dont know how it works. I am a little tentative now that anything I do will cause a problem! I need to start using the Graphics Tablet (with photoshop) soon as I am an Artist and falling behind with WORK for an exhibition! Thanks again for the help!!!I think that you should FIRST backup any data you may have on the hard drive, to, preferably a different hard drive, CD/DVD or to a Flash drive. Now, go back to the pre-driver Windows, using System Restore. Then, backup the Windows partition, using an imaging software like what Computer_Commando suggested. Once you're relaxed with the data and Windows drive backed up, you can try installing and updating any drivers and software again. And if something goes wrong again, you can quickly restore the Windows image, so that you won't have to do a repair/re-install again. Windows repair only repairs any corrupt Windows files that a corrupt driver or software installation may have put in, and when you can't boot into Windows to do a system restore. Quote from: will2power on May 14, 2010, 02:33:49 AM "I would attempt a Repair Install rather than a Reinstall."I only perform image backups when everything is working fine, it makes no sense to have an image of something that doesn't work right. Once you perform regular images, you can turn System Restore off. I keep a rotating set of 3-4 images for each computer. If you have Windows working relatively well, perform the image backup, it's good practice even if you never use that image. Then attempt anything else you like. If it makes it worse, restore the image.this happened to me aswell just now on my school computer. Installed the downloaded driver for the TB-7300 (xp version). After a reboot it just loops. This is weird cause I've had this tablet for my own XP, my own Vista and now my own win 7 without any problems. The technician ain't gonna be happy with me tomorrow. |

Solve : How do you determine what sound card you have to get updated drivers? |
Answer» Hey guys new here wondering if you can help or not. I had to reinstall a copy of windows xp on to a friends computer. After doing so I did not have any sound. I keep getting an error message saying cannot play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding. I went into device manager it does not show any device conflicts, nor does it actually show the sound card, just the audio codecs and what not. This is not my computer but a friends that he got from someone else. It appears to be custom built. It's not a Dell or Gateway or anything like that otherwise I would just go to there website. Any idea if there is some other problem here or do I just need to know what sound card this computer has so I can get the appropriate drivers. How in the world do i determine what sound card this has? I cant find anything. The FCC number on the motherboard was of no help. |

Solve : USB driver missing? |
Answer» Ok now I'm really reaching on this one (while WAITING for the O/P to tell us what model/brand of computer we are dealing with). If it is as stated"the computer is pretty old" then is it possible that the original O/S was NOT XP but W98? If so and the O/P has the access would it help anything to do a double boot with win98 as the other O/S.Then see if the USB ports will show up in the Win98 configuration. Or will that have no affect on the fact that the Host Controllers are not present? Please don't laugh if this is ridiculous --just say so i can take it. truenorthmaybe this can help? Ok now I'm really reaching on this one (while waiting for the O/P to tell us what model/brand of computer we are dealing with). If it is as stated"the computer is pretty old" then is it possible that the original O/S was NOT XP but W98?It's quite certain, actually... Well, either that, or it came with W2K. Quote If so and the O/P has the access would it help anything to do a double boot with win98 as the other O/S.Then see if the USB ports will show up in the Win98 configuration. It could eliminate my unlikely theory that Windows XP purposely disabled them. I highly doubt that is the case... also, this would mean they need a windows 98 Disc. Quote Or will that have no affect on the fact that the Host Controllers are not present? Please don't laugh if this is ridiculous --just say so i can take it. truenorth I'm going to have to say, it's very strange that the Host Controllers essentially don't exist. I'd like to REVISE my "theory" based on the new evidence (specifically, that PC Wizard 2010 states USB Bus:No). If there is, without a doubt, no USB setting in the BIOS. Then except in the rare case where such an option is enabled/disabled through a JUMPER, there very well may not be any USB functionality. Sure, it could have the header block installed, but unless it's plugged into a USB header, it's not going to do much. But I don't think this is very likely. Most motherboards since 1996 have at least USB 1.1 built in. It could be a hardware problem- but then the options would be in the BIOS screen. A most curious issue this is.well the problem I'm having is that whatever I connect seems to appear as if it's working when it doesn't. like for EXAMPLE if I plugged in an ipod it'll start CHARGING (well appear to charge, it never actually charges the battery -_-) but nothing happens on the computer. and yes i'm positive there's no option in bios, no section in device manager nothing appears on pc manager either like in the pics i posted. I have disks back to win95 but unfortunately that won't help you. I sure hate throwing in the towel.truenorthIf the USB isn't recognized by BIOS then no operating system will find it. STK, you could try flashing your BIOS. http://www.devhardware.com/c/a/Hardware-Guides/Why-and-How-to-Flash-Your-BIOS/ Be careful with this. If you do it wrong, your computer will become a unusable. According to your PC Wizard screenshot, you have AWARD BIOS. |

Solve : Uninstalled mobo vid driver, need reinstall.? |
Answer» Hardware: Mobo-Jetway HA06 1. Well, that is my exact problem.1. I thought it was, now I know. 2. You wouldn't be getting the error message. 3. Your original post indicated you tried it and it doesn't work. BIOS doesn't allow simultaneous operation.Okay, I understand that. But, I don't THINK I fully understand the train of command here. Does your motherboard still use it's north BRIDGE for the Video Card data? I mean, computers with graphics on board have a graphics chipset on them, but do video cards even use the chipset on the mobo? I might be thinking down too many layers for this, but I don't understand, if a video card doesn't require use of the north bridge, why you can't run two video feeds. Quote from: hobogunner on September 07, 2010, 07:48:57 PM Does your motherboard still use it's north bridge for the Video Card data? Yes Quote from: hobogunner on September 07, 2010, 07:48:57 PM do video cards even use the chipset on the mobo? Yes The chipset provides an extension of the address bus and data bus to the expansion slot(s) and thus to any expansion card in those slots. When you plug your video card into the expansion slot, it functions just as if it were built into the motherboard. |

Solve : Sound Blaster Audigy Driver for vista?? |
Answer» http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/954/asus_crosshair_republic_of_gamers_socket_am2_motherboard/index3.html Quote Lastly we come to the audio extra. ASUS ran out of room on the board to add the audio ports. To this end, a special daughter board is used with the HD Audio codec onboard with 6 Stereo audio ports, the front audio connector header and the analogue CD-IN port. This plugs into a PCI Express x1 like port above the first PCI Express x16 port on the board. A SoundMAX Microphone system is provided as an additional extra for your system.Sir, you are a star. I just found the sound card in the box and I am going to install it now. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks!!You're very welcome Interesting tidbit: Using a Audigy SE or a X-Fi XtremeAudio, or any of several other similar sound cards will reduce performance on the whole, because those cards use Host-based processing. One might think that the Audigy SE Card uses an Audigy Chip, and the X-Fi XtremeAudio uses an X-Fi Chip, but this is not the case. Neither one has the DSP processor that they are implied to have in their name. All the "processing" that would normally be performed by the card (EAX effects and so forth) are actually done by your CPU. Quote from: Crafty on September 13, 2010, 05:43:33 PM So what sound card would you recommend then? I am just building another computer and I'm looking to install a Creative Extreme Gamer, sound card. I don't want to use this card if it eats into my cpu! Don't worry! It's only the "Value" line that usually omits the DSP for which the cards are named- the Audigy SE/Audigy 2 SE as well as the X-Fi extreme Audio. the other X-Fi's (including the extremeMusic/ExtremeGamer) include the DSP. (And therefore are f it to be called an Audigy or X-Fi (since they have the processor). Most motherboard sound uses host based processing too; it GET's WORSE when you enable EAX and the other ADVANCED effects of the "card" or "chip" because you are in fact just telling the driver to enable those effects, and the driver just uses the CPU for sound processing. Will this apply to my sound card if I am using EAX, or is it only onboard sound and and cheaper cards that will use the CPU? You learn something everyday on here, it's why I try to visit this site as often as I can . Quote from: Crafty on September 14, 2010, 04:32:43 AM Will this apply to my sound card if I am using EAX, or is it only onboard sound and and cheaper cards that will use the CPU? Quote Don't worry! The DSP is the signal processor. When your sound card has it, it handles the various effects. Otherwise, the driver just does it in software (that is, the driver will perform the operations on the sound and so forth using the CPU, and then send that to the card for OUTPUT). If your sound card has the DSP, you would have nothing to worry about. However, your current card is a Audigy SE: this doesn't have the Audigy chip (how is that for false advertising?), and the driver will perform, for example, EAX effects through software. The extremegamer, however, has a X-Fi chip and performs the signal processing using it (EAX and other effects (such as the X-Fi Crystalizer I have become rather fond of) are performed via the sound processing chip on the card. Nowadays the processing demands of DSP processing 7.1 channel high bitrate 3-d sound means that the processor sometimes even needs a heatsink (the true X-Fi's have heatsinks on their DSP; the "fake" (ExtremeAudio, I believe) do not). Of course this is only Creative. Personally I'm not familiar with the other Sound card Vendors. I would hope they are a bit more FORWARD with the limitations of their value-priced products. an Audigy SE saying it "supports EAX and other effects" is pretty stupid, because in that case it's the CPU that's doing all the supporting, the card is just there to take the credit. |
