Solve : Which driver do I need to install.?

Answer»

I just did a complete reinstall of my operating system and am trying to figure out which drivers to reinstall. I am running with windows XP SP2. My computer is a Toshiba Satellite A105-S4054. The list of drivers can be found here:

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?ct=DL&os=&category=&moid=1372980&rpn=PSAA8U&modelFilter=&selCategory=3&selFamily=1073768663

There are numerous drivers and I am not EXACTLY sure which are needed. I installed the network driver and got my wireless internet working. I am also in the process of installing the sound driver. However, nothing else works. I can't watch DVD's ETC. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Go to "Device Manager" and see which hardware you have. Anything needing a driver update will have a yellow exclamation point on it.The yellow exclamation is next to

Ethernet Controller
Mass storage controller
Modem Device on HIgh def Audio Bus
SM Bus Controller
Video Controller
Video controller (VGA compatible)

any help on to which drivers these are.Update your chipset (INF update utility) first. That should take care of most of your problems. After you do that it looks like you will also need the Intel Pro 10/100 Model Driver. Post back with whatever is left.Install the chipset driver for your system.I installed the most recent chipset(INF Utility Update)

Now the yellow exclamation is only by:

Ethernet Controller
Mass Storage Controller
Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus

Despite this my computer appears to be working great. I can access the internet, browse the web, listen to music, open files, etc...

...I couldn't find the intel pro 10/100 model driver, but I found something similar. However, it appeared to be a network driver. I imagined this has to do with the internet(I could very well be wrong) and sense my internet is working fine, I'm not sure why I'd need another network driver.

The only noticeable problem is that I can't play DVDs. When I open them with Windows Media Player I get this error message. "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer."

I went to the toshiba site in my OP and downloaded all of the display drivers, but this didn't fix it.

Thanks to everyone that has helped. Anything else that you have to offer would be greatly appreciated. On the Toshiba page narrow your search using Windows XP SP2 and LAN to find the Intel Pro 10/100, It should be at the top of the list.
You also need to narrow the search to Modem and get the "Toshiba Software Modem Driver"
You also need the "Texas Instruments...." under Flash MEMORY I think.
For the DVD problem try the "DVD RAM driver" under DVD-ROM.Accidentally deleted original post. Sorry.Laptop drivers should always come from the laptop manuf. site.As Patio has already stated the chipset driver from the Toshiba site should be the best. I was having a hard time finding it there so I sent you to Intel. What I see at Toshiba (Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility) appears to be the same thing you already received from intel but I could be wrong.Thank you all for your help. I am almost there. Only two problems remain.

1. All of the yellow exclamation points are gone except the one by Ethernet Controller. This is surely stemming from my inability to run the Intel Pro 10/100. When I download it and unzip it nothing happens (every other driver I have unzipped has automatically booted into an install program). This one does nothing, so I went into its folder and tried to find some sort of setup icon, but nothing was there. There were two .din ICONS in that file, but my computer is unable to read them. That might not be relevant though.

2. DVD Playback is unavailable. I downloaded the DVD-RAM Driver from toshiba and it did nothing. it still says

"Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer."

I have found a couple DVD decoder programs for $20 on the internet, but am wondering if I can get my DVD playback restored for free.

Thanks for the insight. Quote from: cruisin702 on January 25, 2010, 03:56:08 PM

Although the versions are different, everything seems to be working fine (except what I mention in the post directly above) so I think I will just keep the Intel Chipset. Any advice on the above post would be appreciated. DLoad the xLite Codec pack and see if that solves the DVD playback issue...
Codecs like drivers should never cost money.Do you have the discs that came with your computer? Look for the WINDVD, it should be included with it.For the ethernet controller you might try this

Have your WINDOWS CD handy...it will ask for it.
Let it finish...remove the CD and re-boot.That worked!  Thank you.  Is there something I did, that caused that?

I do have one other problem-

Every  time I reboot I get an error that says my SQL SERVER installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with.  How do I fix that?  I assume it was on my Windows XP disc, when it was originally installed.

Also Bullguard could maybe only be known here, living in Denmark so you know.Nova Welcome Aboard !

As a rule of thumb and for future reference...when it comes to laptops Drivers should always come from the laptop manuf. SITE.
This is because they submit specs they want to component manuf. and then Author the drivers for those components themselves...

Desktop machines you can go at component level and they should be fine. Quote from: patio on January 20, 2010, 07:56:49 AM

Solve : CD/ROM driver?

Answer»

Hi.

Using XP service pack 2.  The CDROM DRIVE I have is JLMS XJ-HD1665.

I was having issues with my CDROM drive, so uninstalled the driver software and restarted the machine, hoping it would re-install and everything would be fine.  However, the CDROM drive is now unavailable and a drive labled K: has appeared at the BOTTOM of the my computer window.  K: appears to have all the functionality of the CDROM drive.

Just wondering if anyone knows how I can get rid of this K: drive and make the CDROM drive icon WORK again.

Cheers, guys.

FeenixOptical drives have not needed drivers since WinME...
Right clik the K drive and SELECT Remove/Uninstall...and re-boot,Since CD-ROMs don't have, or need "drivers" in Windows XP, I am wondering what this person actually uninstalled...

Solve : bios install?

Answer»

Hi all,

I just updated the award bios due to a virus. the update bar indicated all but 2 blocks were updated. I wonder if a trace of the virus has been left behind.

This is a garage desktop computer where it gets around 50 degrees at night. In the morning I have to reboot 2 or 3 times to get beyond the black screen. I wonder if that might be the problem?

I deleted and updated the mbr in the hhd, formatted same, updated bios, and reenstalled os.

win xp home, ecs 848p mb, 1gig memory, ati 9000 video card, broadcom wireless card, nothing fancy.
any help or info is appreciatedI really, really don't understand your post.

You updated the bios due to a virus? Please explain what that means.

All but two blocks were updates? Either the bios flash worked or it did not. And the virus (unless it is the VERY rare BOOT sector type of virus) would have absolutely no effect on a bios update.

Computers work just fine at 50 degrees (fahrenheit)

You deleted the mbr? Then updated the bios again?? Reinstalled the OS - so is it working or not?

Is there a question here somewhere? That’s right, a temperature of 50 ̊ F should be well within the normal range of any desktop computer.
Yet for some reason I have noticed problems sometimes with older computers if they are too cold. Don’t know why.
If your BIOS flash was interrupted in anyway you will need a motherboard, or if it has a LIF(Low Insertion Force) chip or ZIF(Zero Force Insertion) chip it might be changeable.

A failed BIOS flash is ALWAYS a bad thing.most motherboard have a small ROM chip as well THOUGH that, if the normal BIOS is corrupted can be used to flash straight from a floppy. Doesn't have anything else; just the flashing ROM.Hello, boriken;
Before we go any further  with the BIOS Flash thing, we need to know the make and model of the Motherboard. Just ecs 848p ? No other numbers ? And which version(s) of the flash software you had.
And how did you know the BIOS had a virus?
Did you say this was a SATA drive?
Did you test the drive on another PC? Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 14, 2010, 07:52:11 PM

Really?
I wasn't aware of that, of course I'd never had a need to find it.  Can you supply some DOCUMENTATION I could peruse through?Actually, I was only partially correct. It's not actually a seperate chip, but rather a special area in the start of the BIOS called the Boot Block.

http://forum.overclock3d.net/showthread.php?324-Motherboard-BIOS-Flashing-Guide

Quote

* Boot block :
Most flash BIOS's incorporate something called a 'boot block'
and UNIFLASH will not normally overwrite it so it remains intact.
The boot block contains just enough code to boot up your computer with basic
peripheral support to enable you to flash in a working BIOS in case something
went wrong , you wont see anything at the screen and you must use a floppy disk as the boot block only supports the floppy drive, no harddrive access!

Even so, newer PCs literally have two Duplicate BIOS chips. Mine has two, so if a flash fails or something it runs off the backup. Nice, thanks for the heads up BC.

I thanked you for that one, you know, in case you care   Quote from: Quantos on January 14, 2010, 08:39:36 PM

BC is no too sharp on hard ware.
OK, he got you the docs.
A portion  of the FLASH is "blown" at the factory so that it ca not be erased. The remainder can still be flashed. That part is ROM. The ROM will READ a prepared floppy and re do the flash. This is documented somewhere in the Intel motherboards. Don't know which and not sure if it is still done that way.

not too sharp... but that's essentially what I just said!  that "blown" flash that cannot be erased is the boot block...

unless of course this is your dictation program causing confusion Yes, BC.
Basically you had it right. That is old technology and I was just talking off the top of my head. Little bit of research with Google shows that everybody is repeating the same words that they found somewhere about the accidental rewrite of the  BIOS. According to one popular source there may have been only one well known virus that actually attacked the flash BIOS. I think it was called the Chernobyl virus. But it only affected certain Intel motherboards anyway.

I just did a Google search on some of this to try to bring my memory back and it appears that now days they think the possibility of a BIOS virus is rather rare. This is because most  i386 operating systems will not allow direct access to the hardware that does the flash. So you have to boot the system with the DOS floppy and run the program in that environment.
That being said, it would seem very unlikely that the  OP had a virus in his firmware.
And I scratched out that part where I said you were too sharp on hardware. Actually you did WHETHER rather well.
If he's running a 286 he'd have to worry about a BIOS infection....unlikely.    Bios & Boot Sector viruses are indeed extremely rare. Then again, so is a response from the OP.Hi All,
Sorry I didn't resond to all you kind people, but I do have to work.  I found the problem, besides a virus I also have a bad HDD. Problem solved.
Thanks for your help

Solve : Computer not accepting Flash Drive?

Answer» Product Type: PNY USB Flash Drive and Tribeca USB Flash Drive
COMPUTER: Dell Inspiron 530S
Processor: Intell Pentium
OS: Windows Vista

First this is what happened...

I plug in the flash drive and the installation begins. A little bit in, the computer tells me that it cannot find the driver software for the device. Says to choose search on my computer for driver software, but ACCORDING to the companies I contacted that make both of the flash drives they don't HAVE driver software, it should just recognize the drive and I can use it just fine. It doesn't.

So one company said, you have a defective device, (the Tribeca one) Even though I PLUGGED it into my other computer, a new mini laptop by Asus with Windows SP, and it worked.  I haven't tried the current flash drive in the other computer that the other flash drive worked in because it needs to be plugged into the charger for 8 hours before I can use it again.

But it seems the problem lies with my main computer, the Dell.

So I have since restarted my computer many TIMES over the past 3 days.  Today I tried plugging in the new flash drive, (the PNY) and there was no window popping up acknowledging device being connected. Great. I contact the company and they say to try all sorts of things to get it to work after going into control panel, windows, devices, all sorts of setting that would take too long to post here. NOTHING worked.

So while I wait for them to respond, I'm here, HOPING so much that someone can help me. Thanks to anyone who's read all this and can help. I will very much appreciate help, so will my wallet!

- Jennifer

This is the second flash drive (i previously bought one of a different brand) that encountered the same problem. I was told by the other flash drive's brand customer service that it was a defective flash drive. When I plug other devices into my usb ports everything else will work. I've tried all 4 of my usb ports to make this work and it won't. What do I do?? - JenniferSorry, the mini laptop is a Windows XP system. That other was a typo. There have been a number of BIOS updates, some of which resolve USB issues.

Solve : Possible to change default DiskDrive??

Answer»

*I am running Windows XP on a custom built computer, which was new only a few months ago.*
I have two Hard Disk Drives, the standard C: drive, and my personal ONE (with usable, large amounts of memory) E: drive. Occasionally when I download something (such as iTunes) it goes directly into C: even after I specify that I want it to save into my E:. I am guessing this is because it is the default or something.. ?
I need to know if it is possible for everything to be saved into my E: instead, since my C: has extremely limited and small amounts of free memory, and even the smallest files fill it, and cause my computer to not run properly. Could someone please inform me as to whether this is possible or not?
My DOCUMENTS can be made to use another folder or drive..
If you are 'Bill', create a folder structure like this:
E:\Bill\MyDocs
Next, on your desktop, right click my documents and select properties.

You will see an option to move the documents to a new folder.
Specify the drive and folder you have just made and click on move.
Wait for the system to move your stuff. Reboot your computer. Most programs will have enough sense to know that the user documents for 'Bill' are now somewhere else. My Music is inside of the My Documents, so it will also be in the new location.
This only apples to one user. In this case 'Bill' nit  JOHN and Mary still have their stuff on the C: drive. That is why we use the user name in the directory structure. Everybody has to have their own place.

1100 of those posts are posts arguing about "DNS hijacking" which, since it's must be happening, your semi-anti-MS rants about how great Caldera DR-DOS was and the awful things that Microsoft did to break it, blah blah, dear god, microsoft broke my television... something about missing cheese, etc. (now, that being said, they were really more conversations then arguments and were quite fun.

702 are amusing if not completely irrelevant observations that are often based on a awful and corny pun and are also posted in a different font, typeface, colour, and font weight.

Solve : Air Pace WiFi & Win 7?

Answer»

I have an Abit Air Pace WiFi which worked fine under Vista Premium 64 Bit. I have just upgraded to Windows 7 and when I d/loaded drivers from Abit and installed I got a BSOD as it installed. Windows said the Manu does not support this device any more. Seems a shame as this is a PCIex1 interface device which is supposed to be more modern than a PCI one. Any suggestions anyone? Thanks AlexmaIs Win732bit or 64 ? ?
If 32bit DLoad and install the Vista32Bit drivers...
Sorry Patio, I updated from Vista Premium 64 Bit to Windows 7 Premium 64bit.  I have now tried 3 times to d/load drivers from abit with the same result 'BSOD' & not there long enough to read the result. BTW abit only list Vista 64bit drivers & not Win 7.Have you tried physically removing the card...removing it in Device Manager and re-installing the hard/software yet ? ?
This worked for me with a Belkin card...Yes Patio, I have just done exactly what you ADVISED with the same result ie BSOD & shutdown. I think I am into a no win situation here unless Abit create Win 764 bit drivers. Thank you anyway. Regards Alexma Best of Luck...

Is it entirely needed ? ?No Not Really!! I have used it in the past as an Access Point, but it is not essential. If I ever do get it going I'll endeavour to let you know. Many Thanks AlexmaAnytime !Alexma, I am in much the same boat except I brought my WLP-01 new to go into my i7 / win 7 new build so it has never worked !
I am sure you have already spotted it but just in CASE – note that there are (at least) two ‘board’ versions of the Airpace around. One is an ‘Artheos’ – I think this will have an AR number somewhere on the card, the other is an Azurewave with “AW 870” on the board. All my tries with various AR drivers have produced a BSOD. Tries with some (I think) AW drivers have still failed but with some signs of recognition. I will keep this post updated if I have any luck just in case you have an AW or somebody else looking for a driver doesn’t spot this difference.

Thanks for your input ISAW. I solved the problem easily (for me!) by installing it in my other PC (the Winfast/Foxconn) running Vista 64bit. WORKS a treat now! Sorry this does not solve the problem for you THOUGH. Cheers Alexma Quote from: ISAW on November 09, 2009, 05:10:39 AM

My WLP-01 runs very fine with Win7/32
I installed the windows built in driver manually.
Select vendor "Atheros communications" and the model "AR5006 802.11a/b/g-WiFi Adapter from Atheros"
The chipset on the WLP-01 is an Atheros 5006.
To set to accesspoint MODE you can try the file "atheros_ar5xxx_8.0.0.238-seven.zip" at *Blocked Russian URL*" because it has 28MB and perhaps this mode is available but i am not sure.I have an  Abit Air Pace WiFi and couldn't instal uinder windows 7 x86, I made it think it was installung under xp and works ok. On the setup file right click select compatibility and window xp service pack 3 and it installs ok

Solve : Free Bluetooth Driver for External Device??

Answer»

So my NEW Dell WinXP laptop did not come with built-in Bluetooth (corp. IT: "We didn't know you guys used Bluetooth!"). So I bought a USB Bluetooth dongle-type thing from Amazon, only to find out after installing the software, that it's "evaluation" software, and there's an additional charge if I want full functionality!

This all jumps OUTSIDE of my knowledge base, so I have a few questions. There may be some more questions I'm not even thinking of:

- Is the device "married" to specific software? That is, MUST I use the enclosed software with the dongle?

- If the dongle is - for LACK of a BETTER word - unlocked, can anyone recommend software to control it?

I looked briefly on download.com, but wasn't really certain what I was looking for.

Thanks for any and all advice.

Send it back and get your money back...Yeah, I was afraid of that.

Solve : HELP!! (Display Driver Stopped Responding And Has Recovered and Slow Games)?

Answer»

Okay for Christmas I got a new laptop, (an Alienware M15x) which was amazing, and I do LOVE this thing, although I've been having quite a few problems recently with it, first of a lot of my games seem to have a very low frame rate when running on the settings that the game recommends. I have a NVIDIA GeForce 240M which should be enough to run games like 'Left 4 Dead 2' on its highest graphics. So I was just on MSN last night and then everything got worse, my DISPLAY driver stopped responding and recovered, not just once, but countless times. my screen just went black flashed a few times and then went back to normal.
The actual error message is:
(Display Driver stopped responding and has recovered: Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 186.47 stopped responding and has successfully recovered)
I have tried to download new drivers from the Nvidia website but it says that the drivers weren't for my OS (Windows 7 64 bit)
If anybody could HELP me, PLEASE LET me know
Many thanks in advance,
Cameron

I'd be exercising the Warranty on that bad boy if i were you...Aw, man.. I'm kind of hoping that I wont have to turn to that..
I mean, I could play Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (Single player) fine on maximum graphics and now the frame rate is horrible..

[Saving space, attachment DELETED by admin]Well this may convince you then...generally vid chips in laptops cannot be user serviced...having a shop replace that chip down the road will probably run upwards of $250.00 or so....

Solve : Windows XP from scratch and Graphics Driver won't install, please help.?

Answer»

Hello there,

a friend bought a PC from a TAFE COLLEGE recently which was originally hooked up to a network thus had no OS on it. I'm setting it up for someone who knows little about computers. I am only beginning myself, but like to think I know enough to get by.

I installed XP Professional, then used Everest Home Free Edition to identify the motherboard, which turned out to be an Intel D865GLC. I used Intel's website to download all the drivers for it. Every one of them worked except for the graphics driver. It comes up with "Error: one or more files required for installation are either missing or corrupt ... setup will exit".

It's a very frustrating problem because I have no idea what files are missing!! or am I trying to install the wrong graphics driver?? Unfortunately I can't just ignore it because it's obvious the computer is running slow without a graphics driver, particularly when I scroll up or down a page or document.

I tried re-installing XP but to no avail. I am now lost for answers. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Everest's report is attached for anyone interested.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Chris.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Try re-installing the MBoard chipset drivers...re-booting and then the graphics drivers.thanks for your quick reply patio, I tried what you suggested but the error message still appears

any other suggestions?

Thanks againWhere are you grabbing the graphics drivers from ? ?
How come, chipset is not listed in Everest?

Download, and install Everest Ultimate Edition 4.6: http://www.lavalys.com:8081/everestultimate460.exe
Enter following registration code (Help>Enter PRODUCT key) to make it fully functional:
RHGJE-54X47-HML9C-V498I-UUMVI
(it's all legal, the above version has been recently offered as a free download)

In left pane expand Computer folder.
Click once on Summary
In upper menu, go Report>Quick Report-Summary
Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Don't include anything under the line Debug - PCI

I got the drivers from the Intel website by following the prompts at (hope its the right drivers lol):

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Desktop+Boards&ProductLine=Intel%c2%ae+865+Chipset+Family+Boards&ProductProduct=Intel%c2%ae+Desktop+Board+D865GLC&OSVersion=Windows+XP+Professional*&DownloadType=Drivers

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Broni,
I'm not sure why the chipset is not listed sorry, perhaps I didnt grab all the info, but anway, I have followed your advice and have attached the new report from Everest Ultimate Edition.

Just one THING I've noticed: I went into Device Manager and saw something called "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)" with a yellow question mark beside it, and Everest said I had a NVidia GEFORCE 6200 card inside. I found the driver for this on the net, but before I download it, I just thought I would ask if it would be worth downloading and installing it, and is this the problem I've been having all along with the graphics driver not installing (ie: that I was trying to install Intel's Extreme Graphics driver when I really should have been installing NVidia's GeForce 6200 driver)?

Cheers.

Yeah, means, your display works only on default Windows driver and yes, Everest report says: nVIDIA GeForce 6200
Go for it.BTW, the chipset is Intel Springdale-G i865GALL FIXED

THANKS EVERYBODY FOR YOUR HELP!Nice We LOVE success stories here ! !

If you don't have the original drivers cd that came with the pc, all of the drivers should be found at http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/dlcenter.asp?cmpid=topnavThe normal vendor driver should work, however I've found some systems need the SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC to play sounds (http://download.cnet.com/SigmaTel-High-Definition-Audio-CODEC/3000-2110_4-173629.html) Quote from: cruisin702 on January 01, 2010, 11:00:20 PM

Solve : Deleted audio driver for lenovo laptop, HELP!?

Answer»

I've tried to download the appropriate audio driver for my lenovo laptop, but when I run the download from the lenovo website, it does not seem to work!
I've tried restarting...everything. What can I do?
I have NO sound, and I have no other ideas!

Did you in fact download the driver and did you then try to INSTALL it? Your post is VERY unclear. And how did you "delete" your audio driver in the first place?unfortunately ive little experience with computers...and am just getting frustrated with a SEEMINGLY simple problem.

i believe i accidently deleted the program (add/remove programs) for my audio device when trying to remove something else, because ever since= no sound.

when looking for what I think i need, i believe that this; Conexant Audio Driver for Windows XP - Lenovo G530 (MT 4446 only), N500...is what is needed to be downloaded to regain sound.

when i try to install to hard drive...nothing is happening. it claims it is installed, but  after the installation is complete, nothing has changed.

any specific way the installation is needed to be done? any advice WOULD be greatly appreciated.
Did you reboot after installing it? No, no special way if it had an "install.exe" or "setup.exe" that you double-clicked on to start the install.yes, definately rebooted.
doesn't ask however if system can be restarted, but did it anyway. (after installwizard was complete)

its been downloaded, and appears on my hard drive, but as i said, nothing has changed.

just need to know if there are any other options...other drivers...i really have no ideas. Please go to START - RUN and type
devmgmt.msc
and press ENTER
Do you see any yellow exclamation marks? If so, next to what devices?yes, one. under the subcategory of other devices, there is a yellow exclamation MARK next to "audio device on high definition audio bus."

Go to the following site and download and install the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver and let us know what happens: http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/en/DriversDownloads/drivers_list.aspx?CategoryID=10error; could not complete installation. could not find device for this driver.

perhaps because its for windows 7? the conexant one is most likely my best bet for having xp, but having no success with it.

thanks for all the help...but i will most likely need to take this in somewhere.  I don't believe the conexant driver is what you want. Your system seems to want a driver for the hi-def audio device. Sorry - wish I knew what you deleted. Have you tried system restore? Have you looked in the recycle bin?

Solve : Potential BIOS problem?

Answer»

I've got a real head-splitter that I hope someone can help me with.

I have a machine that is several years old. It stopped working a few months ago and I got a BSOD message with various STOP messages (0x00000024, 0x0000008E, 0x0000001A, 0x000000C2) and the thing won't boot, period. The messaging lead me to believe it was a problem with one of the drives. (There was a two drive RAID-0 for performance on the machine.) However, I've removed the drives from the rig and put in a completely new drive figuring if I can it booting again, I can use RAID recovery utilities to get the data off the RAID drives or repair them. But even with all the hard drives removed from when the errors started, I STILL get the same errors. There was also something to indicate that their may be a BIOS problem and not a drive problem. I've reverted to default settings, etc, but gotten nothing but the same error messages. I can get a boot from DVD going, but as soon as I try to install Windows, I get one of the same STOP messages. I'd flash the BIOS, but it is so old that I don't know the mobo details anymore, I just have the BIOS info, and I can't run any of the utes to tell me what the mobo is anymore.

The BIOS details I have are Phoenix Award BIOS v6.00PG, v1.9 090905

I've done everything I know how to do. Any other help would be appreciated. I've got a good bit of experience under my belt, but this thing is beyond me.

Thanks in advance.Flakey power supply would be my guess...as the error messages are inconsistent.Thank you for the response, but I've already swapped out the power supply. I forgot to mention that. What makes you think the power supply would cause those errors? I'm interested. If there's a chance my backup may be flaky as well, I'd look into swapping it one more time.,I'd borrow one you know is good of the same or GREATER wattage as the 1st one that was replaced...I'll give it a shot, then. I think I have one still in the box somewhere. So I swapped in a new supply that is out of the box, and hooked up everything to the original config.

New and exciting problem: disk read error on boot.

I think it may have something to do with the RAID. I had someone else build this rig for me, so I know next to nothing about RAID. I may need to swap back in that new drive and see what's up, I suppose. If it was SETUP as RAID-0, removing 1 drive and replacing it with another will not work.  Read more about RAID:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAIDNo, that's not it. As I referenced above, I removed both RAIDed drives from the the machine and swapped in a completely different drive to try and get it to boot, but was getting the same errors. That was the procedure I was referring to.Because it's still looking for a RAID array possibly... Quote from: unclefloyd on December 06, 2009, 04:58:57 PM

New drive is new drive. I set the BIOS to boot from the DVD with a Windows disc in it. Trying to install onto the new drive and getting to the select drive for install screen and getting the same STOP errors as before.

Thanks again for the help. Quote from: unclefloyd on December 07, 2009, 05:37:37 PM

If it's anything like one of mine, in BIOS, go to Integrated Peripherals, SATA Controller Mode; change from RAID to IDEHaven't had a chance to futz with this with work and the holidays, but all my settings are correct, and I'm still getting the same disk error.

Any other ideas?

Thanks again.Okay. Here's every last bit of data I have on this. I would have given up on this thing a while ago, except that I just downloaded some vacation pictures to it a day or so before it died and didn't have the chance to back them up yet.

RAID array identifies as healthy. Upon booting in *any* mode with the RAID array attached, one of four things happens:
- It gets to the XP load screen and hangs (this is a relatively new development)
- I get the BAD_POOL_CALLER STOP 0x000000c2 BSOD
- I get the STOP 0x000000024 NTFS.SB5 BSOD
- I get the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQL STOP 0x0000000A BSOD
- I get the STOP 0x0000007E BSOD

If I turn off the array and turn back on IDE drives, when I put in a blank new drive or a drive with windows already formatted, I get a disc read error (so I can't get another drive in there to do recovery off the RAID discs).

Any ideas graciously appreciated.Bad RAM module?

Solve : USB 1.1 help..?

Answer»

I was wondering if ANYONE can help me.  A friends computer is about 10 years old and they have Windows XP running on it.  I bought my friend a WEBCAM for christmas but it won't work on their computer.  After some research we FOUND out that their usb drive is a 1.1 and the webcam needs it to be a 2.0 in order to work.  I bought a 2.0 usb extender hoping that it WOULD make the webcam work but it doesn't.  It says that because the original usb drive is a 1.1 then it will convert the extender to a 1.1 even though its a 2.0

So my question is this.  How do we make the usb into a 2.0 so that the webcam can work?  We already did the usb search and we found out that its not 2.0 compatible so we can't just go and buy a new disk thing to install.  Is there another way of getting the computer to have a 2.0 usb drive so that we can get the webcam to work?

Thanks in advance for any help!  :-)I don't know what a USB 2.0 extender is, but you PROBABLY want a USB 2.0 PCI card, like this:

Is the Computer Windows 98, ME, 2k, or XP?This is the extender that I was talking about.  Not sure of the actual name of it.  lol

http://www.imgsrv.worldstart.com/store/images/4port-cable-hub/4port-cable-hub-02.jpg

The computer has Windows XP running on it.That won't help, it's only a USB hub.  WinXP won't require any special drivers for the USB 2.0 card.So is there a way of getting a usb drive on the computer without having to open up the computer and putting in a new card?Short answer....NO.thanks!

so if i buy a card then it should work in the computer, right?

What if the computer doesn't say anything about being usb2 compatible?  Or are all computers compatible as long as I insert the correct card? The card will be USB 2.0...and they're compatible with all pc's.Great!!  THANKS so much for your help!!!

Solve : Dell installation - need application/x msdownload - where to find?

Answer»

Hi,

I've been trying to download my Dell printer. It says I need application/x msdownload to install R190176.exe. I went to MS download and I can't find a download - there's lots of information, but no download. Appreciate all help. Dell drivers and their machines are finicky...
The drivers therefore should only come from Dell.
Travel to the Dell site...enter your Service Tag # from the rear of the machine and it will list all your drivers.I had gone to the Dell website. I downloaded the driver and then I got the message that windows does not recognize application/x msdownload, which I assume is a prerequisite to download the driver. I typed application/x msdownload and went to the msdownload site. I get plenty of information, but I can't SEEM to find where the actual download is located. I'm AFRAID we're gonna need alot more info to continue here including what Ver. of Windows and Service Paks you are running...what changes have been made to the system and a link to the DLoad PAGE you're referring to...application/x-msdownload is a MIME type. what browser are you using?Internet ExplorerIs it possible to download on another browser. Where's the link to the DLoad ? ?Many thanks for your help, but I have solved the PROBLEM. It is a new computer and I'm still downloading programs. I had to download Windows Media 11 and that solved the problem. No offense but that makes no sense whatsoever...

But good to hear you are fixed up...I agree - I found the information on the net. I will probably be back. I can't print again. I'm dealing with some viruses. I will more than likely be back.

Solve : how do you see what is on the recovery partition in windows 7:?

Answer»

I have a Toshiba Satellite a505-s6960.  It came with VISTA and also an up grade for windows 7.  When the geek squad put in windows 7 they did not give me a clean copy of windows 7, it was put on with all the stuff that came with the computer.  I NEED to find how to copy the drivers I need to run the system and the internet and the oem's for the computer.  Some of the programs that the computer came with I want to use again.  So how do I get them to be saved so I can Pick and choose which ones I want? I want the original Toshiba programs that came with the computer.  I don't need the trial ones.  Also I have data and pictures that need to be saved too.  Also when I save these programs and drivers I would like to be able to know what each one is INSTEAD of just a number or something else I do not understand.  I have formatted and put in new OS systems before but always have a hard time when it comes to getting important things NEEDED back in.
Please helpYou can go to Toshiba support site and type in the specific model of your machine for any missing drivers needed.
Quote

Some of the programs that the computer came with I want to use again.
We don't know these programs. What are they?Yes, I was about to say that too.
Did the Geek Squid tell you this would happen? They should have been more help.
Please check this out:

...When you're switching to a new PC, Windows Easy Transfer helps you transfer your files, email, pictures, and settings. In Windows 7, it lives up to the "easy" in its name. ...
Windows Easy Transfer
Notice Microsoft does NOT say it transfers programs.
I need to save some of the drivers needed to run the computer after I get the clean copy of windows don't I?  What about the toshiba burning roms and what I would need to get on the internet and Ethernet drivers and things like that.
I just need to see the drivers and programs on the recovery disk to know what I want to keep and discard.Check your Device Manager first for any missing drivers. Win 7 has lots of generic drivers compatible assuming that your machine is Win 7 capable. You could always go to the support site and save any drivers needed for your machine if needed.
I don't understand why you don't just uninstall the unwanted software.  You won't see a performance INCREASE from all the extra work.

Solve : re: Dell inspiron 1545 laptop modem drivers?

Answer»

the laptop crashed and we DIDNT have the system operating disks so we used one from another computer got the laptop up and working but now it wont detect the internal modem.  Think that the drivers have been deleted.  Need the drivers FILES on a jump drive but when i go to dell website it tries to install them to the standalone im using INSTEAD of allowing me to copy them to a jumpdrive? Dell's driver page does not try to install anything. It allows you to download drivers to your computer. Just enter your service TAG number and it will TAKE you to the right drivers for your system.Inspiron 1545 has no modem, it has various wireless LAN cards.  But do as Alan suggests.

Solve : Intel 82810 Graphics Driver?

Answer»

I have a question, I have the Intel 82810 Graphics Controller on my HP Pavilion 512n. I am getting lines that run up and down through the monitor every now and then. It is an intermittent problem, but when I install the proper driver/controller, it asks if i want to install an old version over a new version.

The graphics is integrated into the motherboard. Do I need to add a graphics card to solve this problem, or what? I cannot afford to buy or build a new system right now, no job to pay for it. I also do not LIKE 64bit OS's that seems to be the only ones I can find already installed. I have tried to install some old graphics cards with no success. I have never seen anything like this before. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! Quote from: jowolf359 on August 15, 2010, 05:39:22 PM

Doesn't sound like a driver issue.  If the monitor is a CRT, that could be the problem.  You MIGHT be able to find a CRT monitor for free.  In your situation, I would spend no money & learn to live with what I have.I have tried other CRT monitors, and they do the same thing. Like I said, I have never seen anything like this before. I don't want to short myself on a bill and buy a LED monitor if a PCI card will work.First of all, see, if same thing happens in SAFE mode.
If it does, then, most likely, you have video chip problem.
If it doesn't, then, most likely, you have a driver problem.

It may be overheating as well.

What brand and model of the COMPUTER is it?HP Pavilion 512n is the MAKE and model. I will have to try that about Safe Mode and see. I know it does it with other monitors I have here.

I am thinking that I may need to buy a reconditioned motherboard of the same brand and chipset if it is the video chip.

Today I noticed that in Device Manager there are three drivers listed, I set it to the one from Microsoft and so far the problem has not shown up.I wouldn't recommend reconditioned for a MBoard...price out a new replacement instead.

Solve : E Drive not working?

Answer»

I tried to read through the threads & can't find anything. My E Drive has been acting funny, not reading cds (to copy on) and now it won't even open. Any suggestions as to what to do?I'll take a guess that e: drive is your optical drive, correct? Does the drive work at boot (insert a bootable disc, make sure the drive is at the top of the bios boot order, and reboot)?Restart, try it!Ok, You're going to have to go a bit slower with me. The drive is the one where you burn CDs (to back up files) or use to install software. I have a Gateway Laptop. My Computer says Drive:E. I tried restarting and that doesn't work, not sure what the other suggestion was saying to do, I'm not that computer savvy. It will read software, like to install STUFF, but won't recognize a blank disc.First of all, ignore any posts by cloudy3

Second, you're first post says the drive won't open. Now you're saying it works fine but won't recognize blank discs. Which is it?

And are you sure you are using the right discs (some drives require cd-r or cd+r and won't accept the other). Read the specs for your cd drive. When I posted the drive wouldn't open at all, after restarting, it opened & I got the disc out, I tried getting it to read a software disc & it would, but it won't read a writeable disc. I don't know where to check specs to see. Sorry to be a bother but I came to the chat room before & they help me in a heartbeat. I'm just not sure what the problem is & have tried anything suggested.Wait, I'm sorry, it says on the underneath CD+R & the ones I got are CD-R, I'm going to try getting the other ones. I'm really sorry but I recently had to reinstall Windows from a virus & have been trying to get things back in order ever since. And the store installed everything to start with so I've been flying blind here. Hopefully this will work. Thank you.there is no such thing as CD+R. there is CD-ROM, CD-R (recordable) and CD-RW (REWRITABLE).

If you cannot read CD-R or CD-RW's, either your drive is an older CD-ROM drive that cannot read them or the disc is the wrong type. (there are different COMBINATIONS of the COLOR of the plastic and the type of metals used). Thanks BC. I should have TYPED DVD instead of CD.If as the O/P implies by "not reading cds (to copy on)" that it is a CD-RW optical device then it is not a "your drive is an older CD-ROM" but is an RW drive. The impression i have is that while it still reads from cd discs it cannot write to them anymore. If that is the case it may be a reflection that the laser for writing is no longer functioning.
If this is the case  the least expensive way to get a RW device back would be to purchase an external optical drive and use that via a usb port. I would additionally recommend a replacement with an external dvd rw for greater versatility. These devices are not very expensive now whereas a gateway compatible internal replacement could get to be costly. truenorth

Solve : Can anybody help me identify my sound card??

Answer»

i downgraded my toshiba l355d-s7809 from vista to xp... because i needed some programs that doesnt work in a non-XP OS... EVEREST didn't made any impact on identifying my card... XP for this notebook model is not supported in the brand's site... so, i had manually identified all the other hardwares to get their drivers... unfortunately, i hadn't figured out what's my sound card yet... thanks for the help...

P.S. i guess it's an AC'97...All LAPTOP drivers should come directly from the laptop manuf. site...i guess not... laptops today are only supported by their manufacturer's site in WINDOWS 7 or vista os... that's why i did efforts on trying to found my HARDWARE integrated in my mobo... for example, the integrated video card is ati x1250... which, toshiba's site only provided windows 7 and vista version of its driver... but as i said, i managed to found the hardware's specs that's why i found the xp version of the driver in ati's site itself... the problem now is my sound card... actually, the only one left unfound... try to surf on toshiba's site toshiba basic l355d-s7809 if you wanna verify my claim... but anyway, thank you man... i think it's hard to find people who wants to TALK... your reply do matter to me...

is my english correct? hahaha...You're missing the whole point....all laptop manuf. customise device drivers supplied to them for each component...that's why any drivers for laptop components should come ONLY from the laptop manuf. site...is there anyone in there who owns the same model or have access on the same model... it doesn't matter what's the OS... what i really need to identify is the soundcard's specs...  i think i'll be able to finx xp version of the driver if i know the card's specs... thanks man...owwww... im sorry... yeah i believe you man... for example the chipset that realtek r5.61 respond to can be modified depending on the manufacturer... but man, i'm really desperate, that's why i'm tryin to find out if the chipsets manufacturer's driver version would work or not... man, help me if you can... can you find me xp driver for this chipset? thank you very much... just try to google my laptops model man... i don't know where you are, but i guess your access to internet way much better than i...

Solve : Trust TB-7300 design tablet driver caused big problem?

Answer»

Hi all,

I am new to the forum and recently had a problem with my new set up that is driving me crazy!

I installed a trust TB-7300 driver and upon restart my computer went into a loop, there is a blue screen but flashes for part of a second.

I tried to restart in safe mode so I can go back to previous set point (I always create restore point before installing anything). When I do this my pc screen is full of text,

multi(0)disk(0)rdisc(0)partition(1)...

At the end there are different drivers listed

I think I have no option but to reinstall XP? I would appreciate any help on how to avoid in the future/what happened!!

Thanks in advance!!Which driver did you install?
http://www.trust.com/products/productdrivers.aspx?artnr=15358Hi Computer_Commando

I actually installed the driver from the disk, I know I shouldnt have, I was too lazy to download on other PC and burn. I guess this is the problem and believe that my only option is to reinstall XP and download updated driver from Trust website and hope for the best!

I am not sure if it is best to install the Trust driver after motherboard, graphics and audio and before installing anything else this time? Quote from: will2power on May 12, 2010, 02:55:22 AM

You did nothing wrong, other than not keeping image backups of your hard drive.
http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp
What concerns me is the bolded item above.  I would attempt a REPAIR Install rather than a Reinstall.
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmThanks again Computer_Commando

The "multi(0)disk(0)rdisc(0)partition(1)..." part when I tried to go to safe mode was a shock to me, never had this happen before, could there be a really serious issue not resolved by an install/repair?

Thanks for the link to image backup software. I was aware of image backups but never realised that they could be used for situations where PC is stuck in a loop/ wont boot. After the back up do I just put in the DVD/CD when there is a problem like the one I am having This is very useful for me as the driver conflict could apen again.

"I would attempt a Repair Install rather than a Reinstall."

If you recommend a repair install then that is what I will TRY now! Thanks for the help, will let you know how it goes!"I would attempt a Repair Install rather than a Reinstall."

This was some good advice, I repaired as per the instructions you gave me and I am back in to windows

I have a few questions about what you think is best to do now.

When I repaired windows it froze at the "please wait" screen and I manually restarted (pressed reset switch). It worked 2nd time. I believe this may be because of driver PUTTING in corrupt registry entry?

So, should I (after taking an image backup of hard drive )

A: Try to go back to pre driver install using "system restore"

B: Try to uninstall/ disable driver for graphics tablet?

C: Do nothing and install rest of software for graphics tablet?

D: Try to find the corrupt registry entry, if there is one, and delete it?

I could not find the drivers on 1st glance, does a windows repair delete or "fix" things like this? I really dont know how it works.

I am a little tentative now that anything I do will cause a problem! I need to start using the Graphics Tablet (with photoshop) soon as I am an Artist and falling behind with WORK for an exhibition!

Thanks again for the help!!!I think that you should FIRST backup any data you may have on the hard drive, to, preferably a different hard drive, CD/DVD or to a Flash drive.

Now, go back to the pre-driver Windows, using System Restore. Then, backup the Windows partition, using an imaging software like what Computer_Commando suggested.

Once you're relaxed with the data and Windows drive backed up,  you can try installing and updating any drivers  and software again. And if something goes wrong again, you can quickly restore the Windows image, so that you won't have to do a repair/re-install again.

Windows repair only repairs any corrupt Windows files that a corrupt driver or software installation may have put in, and when you can't boot into Windows to do a system restore. Quote from: will2power on May 14, 2010, 02:33:49 AM

I only perform image backups when everything is working fine, it makes no sense to have an image of something that doesn't work right.  Once you perform regular images, you can turn System Restore off.  I keep a rotating set of 3-4 images for each computer.  If you have Windows working relatively well, perform the image backup, it's good practice even if you never use that image.  Then attempt anything else you like.  If it makes it worse, restore the image.this happened to me aswell just now on my school computer. Installed the downloaded driver for the TB-7300 (xp version). After a reboot it just loops. This is weird cause I've had this tablet for my own XP, my own Vista and now my own win 7 without any problems.
The technician ain't gonna be happy with me tomorrow.

Have you tried calling Logitech Support? I've always found them intelligent and helpful.

No I haven't. But ive seen numerous topics in their forum about the same pronlem.

Example:

http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Webcams/Drivers-for-quot-QuickCam-Express-861170-quot-for-Win7-x64/td-p/436582

But here the guy got it to WORK? I can't seem do UNDERSTAND what he did tho..

But the reply from the support: Unfortunately, this camera is not supported on Windows 7 x64. :smileysad:If they have not written 64bit drivers for the device then your outta luck...Og thats a bummer.... oh WELL guess i'll give that camera away. Didn't use it much anyways

Solve : How do you determine what sound card you have to get updated drivers?

Answer»

Hey guys new here wondering if you can help or not.  I had to reinstall a copy of windows xp on to a friends computer.  After doing so I did not have any sound.  I keep getting an error message saying cannot play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding.  I went into device manager it does not show any device conflicts, nor does it actually show the sound card, just the audio codecs and what not.  This is not my computer but a friends that he got from someone else.  It appears to be custom built.  It's not a Dell or Gateway or anything like that otherwise I would just go to there website.  Any idea if there is some other problem here or do I just need to know what sound card this computer has so I can get the appropriate drivers.  How in the world do i determine what sound card this has?  I cant find anything.  The FCC number on the motherboard was of no help.

Thanks for the helpHello!

Try this >> EverestDoes this machine have on-board video?
Also If you open the case and get out a magnifying glass you should be able to find the brand and model number somwhere on the motherbaord. Once you have located it, do a Google search on that model and you should be able to find drivers for it.As jerryheavyarms said...

Download, and install Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
Open it, click Computer, then Summary.
In upper menu, go Report>Quick Report-Summary
Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Don't include anything under line Debug - PCI Ok took a while to get around to this but here it is.  Let me know your thoughts.  Thanks again.

Hello!

Correct me if Im wrong, but i think Evest didn't detect the PC's audio. If I may ask, does your friend have

the motherboard installer?

After a re-install ALL drivers are erased...start by re-installing the MBoard drivers.
They should be on a CD labeled Driver CD that shipped with the machine...
This should be done FIRST.I hope, you have that CD, because VT8377 Apollo KT400 chipset is not even listed at VIA site. Further search may be needed.Ya thats the problem.  In my op device manager was not detecting any sound card nor did everst.  Now when I installed windows, not all the drivers were installed from the windows cd.  If I recall correctly there was a audio driver, but dont quote me on that, that needed to have the driver installed.  After updating USING the, automatically search for this driver option, it disapeared from my system.   I believe it loaded a sigma tel audio driver from the windows built in drivers.  I think what happened is that my computer recognized the wrong driver being needed.  The system installed that driver and so now windows thinks there is no longer a device conflict, but it is not showing me that driver in the device manager so I can uninstall it and find the correct one.  That being the case how can I uninstall the driver that windows choose for me and find out where I can get the correct drivers.

Hopefully a little more info helps.  He does not have the motherboard drivers.  The only thing he got was the tower.   Are there any yellow "?", or "!" marks in Device Manager, possibly under "Other devices"?This is confusing...
I found Apollo KT400 chipset on VIA site: http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/chipsets/k7-series/kt400/index.jsp, but it reports South Bridge as VT8235, not VT8377.
Maybe, you can sort something out from here: http://www.computing.net/answers/hardware/amd-xp-24-down-to-833mhz/45985.html, response #3.Hey ALL,

I know this is an OLD post but I'm having the SIMILAR issue.

I actually uninstalled my sound driver unknowingly but when my computer starts up it says "unknown hardware" and can't find a driver to use.

I'm including my EVEREST Report
THANKS FOR ANY HELP!!

Solve : USB driver missing?

Answer»

Ok now I'm really reaching on this one (while WAITING for the O/P to tell us what model/brand of computer we are dealing with). If it is as stated"the computer is pretty old" then is it possible that the original O/S was NOT XP but W98? If so and the O/P has the access would it help anything to do a double boot with win98  as the other O/S.Then see if the USB ports will show up in the Win98 configuration. Or will that have no affect on the fact that the Host Controllers are not present? Please don't laugh if this is ridiculous --just say so i can take it. truenorthmaybe this can help?

It's quite certain, actually... Well, either that, or it came with W2K.

It could eliminate my unlikely theory that Windows XP purposely disabled them. I highly doubt that is the case... also, this would mean they need a windows 98 Disc.

I'm going to have to say, it's very strange that the Host Controllers essentially don't exist. I'd like to REVISE my "theory" based on the new evidence (specifically, that PC Wizard 2010 states USB Bus:No).

If there is, without a doubt, no USB setting in the BIOS. Then except in the rare case where such an option is enabled/disabled through a JUMPER, there very well may not be any USB functionality. Sure, it could have the header block installed, but unless it's plugged into a USB header, it's not going to do much.

But I don't think this is very likely. Most motherboards since 1996 have at least USB 1.1 built in. It could be a hardware problem- but then the options would be in the BIOS screen. A most curious issue this is.well the problem I'm having is that whatever I connect seems to appear as if it's working when it doesn't. like for EXAMPLE if I plugged in an ipod it'll start CHARGING (well appear to charge, it never actually charges the battery -_-) but nothing happens on the computer. and yes i'm positive there's no option in bios, no section in device manager nothing appears on pc manager either like in the pics i posted. yeah the words *censored* couldn't have come to my mind any stronger...Well i must also confess bowing to BC's far superior knowledge i too am stumped. However if you do have the access to a win98 O/S i would be curious to know if that changed things. I have disks back to win95 but unfortunately that won't help you. I sure hate throwing in the towel.truenorthIf the USB isn't recognized by BIOS then no operating system will find it.

STK, you could try flashing your BIOS.

Be careful with this. If you do it wrong, your computer will become a unusable. According to your PC Wizard screenshot, you have AWARD BIOS.

Solve : Uninstalled mobo vid driver, need reinstall.?

Answer»

Hardware: Mobo-Jetway HA06
                     video- ATI 3200 built-in
                 Vid Card- ATI 4670

I uninstalled my motherboard's video driver, because installing my new video card didn't seem fond of me keeping it, but now,I try to run the CD that has my mobo's driver on it, and it says "Setup did not find a driver compatible with your current hardware or operating system. Setup will now exit." I've also scanned plug and play on my display adapters through MMC, and it doesn't pick up my motherboard's display either, I currently have a monitor plugged into it, it's just blank, although I don't believe that affects anything. I'm going to check BIOS after this post, I was just wondering if there is a simple solution to this, since windows isn't picking up the missing hardware at all.Are you trying use the onboard graphics and the add-on graphics adapters simultaneously?  If YES, that's your problem.  On most computers, it's ONE or the other, but not both.Well, that is my exact problem. How would you tell if you could run both of them? I doubt it'll be worth the trouble, but no point in not trying to find out. Quote from: hobogunner on September 07, 2010, 06:02:30 PM

1.  Well, that is my exact problem.
2.  How would you tell if you could run both of them?
3.  I doubt it'll be worth the trouble, but no point in not trying to find out.
1.  I thought it was, now I know.
2.  You wouldn't be getting the error message.
3.  Your original post indicated you tried it and it doesn't work.  BIOS doesn't allow simultaneous operation.Okay, I understand that. But, I don't THINK I fully understand the train of command here. Does your motherboard still use it's north BRIDGE for the Video Card data? I mean, computers with graphics on board have a graphics chipset on them, but do video cards even use the chipset on the mobo? I might be thinking down too many layers for this, but I don't understand, if a video card doesn't require use of the north bridge, why you can't run two video feeds. Yes

Yes

The chipset provides an extension of the address bus and data bus to the expansion slot(s) and thus to any expansion card in those slots. When you plug your video card into the expansion slot, it functions just as if it were built into the motherboard.

Solve : Visioneer Scanner Driver?

Answer»

I have an OLD scanner that I need a driver for, and can't locate one.

The scanner is a Visioneer PaperPort One Touch model  Compact FB. The software I have for it does not include a driver that will run with anything newer than WIN98SE. I've Googled for a driver that will WORK with WIN2000, but with no success. An additional problem is that the computer I WANT to install the scanner on does not have internet connection. I would have to download any driver I found to a flash drive, and install it on the WIN2K computer using that drive.

The scanner works fine; I have the installation disk, but none of that helps until I find the right driver. Any suggestions? You are trying to find a driver that is for a scanner probably designed to work with a win 98 O/S that will enable you to use it with Win 2000. As undoubtedly you know both the O/S and the scanner are probably NOT supported any longer by their manufacturers. This by itself doesn't automatically mean that no such drivers exist. After all your quest is for an operating system compatibility that is not too far removed from it's original compatibility
My suggestion would be to contact "Visioneer" and on bended knee ask for their assistance. They should have an archive of the drivers you need (if the windows 2000 compatibility EVER existed) they might provide it to you.

I actually had a driver sent to me once by a hardware manufacturer as an e-mail attachment that existed but was too outdated to be on their web tech support page. good luck, truenorthSorry it's taken so long to get BACK to you. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try it, and see what happens

Solve : Sound Blaster Audigy Driver for vista??

Answer» http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/954/asus_crosshair_republic_of_gamers_socket_am2_motherboard/index3.html

Lastly we come to the audio extra. ASUS ran out of room on the board to add the audio ports. To this end, a special daughter board is used with the HD Audio codec onboard with 6 Stereo audio ports, the front audio connector header and the analogue CD-IN port. This plugs into a PCI Express x1 like port above the first PCI Express x16 port on the board. A SoundMAX Microphone system is provided as an additional extra for your system.
Sir, you are a star. I just found the sound card in the box and I am going to install it now. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks!!You're very welcome Interesting tidbit: Using a Audigy SE or a X-Fi XtremeAudio, or any of several other similar sound cards will reduce performance on the whole, because those cards use Host-based processing.

One might think that the Audigy SE Card uses an Audigy Chip, and the X-Fi XtremeAudio uses an X-Fi Chip, but this is not the case. Neither one has the DSP processor that they are implied to have in their name. All the "processing" that would normally be performed by the card (EAX effects and so forth) are actually done by your CPU. Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 12, 2010, 08:27:16 PM

So what sound card would you recommend then? I am just building another computer and I'm looking to install a Creative Extreme Gamer, sound card. I don't want to use this card if it eats into my cpu! Quote from: Crafty on September 13, 2010, 05:43:33 PM

Don't worry! It's only the "Value" line that usually omits the DSP for which the cards are named- the Audigy SE/Audigy 2 SE as well as the X-Fi extreme Audio. the  other X-Fi's (including the extremeMusic/ExtremeGamer) include the DSP. (And therefore are f it to be called an Audigy or X-Fi (since they have the processor).

Most motherboard sound uses host based processing too; it GET's WORSE when you enable EAX and the other ADVANCED effects of the "card" or "chip" because you are in fact just telling the driver to enable those effects, and the driver just uses the CPU for sound processing. Will this apply to my sound card if I am using EAX, or is it only onboard sound and and cheaper cards that will use the CPU? You learn something everyday on here, it's why I try to visit this site as often as I can . Quote from: Crafty on September 14, 2010, 04:32:43 AM

The DSP is the signal processor. When your sound card has it, it handles the various effects. Otherwise, the driver just does it in software (that is, the driver will perform the operations on the sound and so forth using the CPU, and then send that to the card for OUTPUT).

If your sound card has the DSP, you would have nothing to worry about. However,  your current card is a Audigy SE: this doesn't have the Audigy chip (how is that for false advertising?), and the driver will perform, for example, EAX effects through software.

The extremegamer, however, has a X-Fi chip and performs the signal processing using it (EAX and other effects (such as the X-Fi Crystalizer I have become rather fond of) are performed via the sound processing chip on the card. Nowadays the processing demands of DSP processing 7.1 channel high bitrate 3-d sound means that the processor sometimes even needs a heatsink (the true X-Fi's have heatsinks on their DSP; the "fake" (ExtremeAudio, I believe) do not).

Of course this is only Creative. Personally I'm not familiar with the other Sound card Vendors. I would hope they are a bit more FORWARD with the limitations of their value-priced products. an Audigy SE saying it "supports EAX and other effects" is pretty stupid, because in that case it's the CPU that's doing all the supporting, the card is just there to take the credit.

Hello,I just made my self a account here to speak about my problem.Right now im in safe mode writing this because,my computer is DIEING i think.I have READ a few topics about my kind of problem.I have 3 theories why my computer is acting this way but first the problem, Now i own a Ordi Twister with a little mod.I have a GeForce 8600 Gt videocard in and  i think is dieing out.I have been getting thees weird freezes that randomly then i like open firefox or something else like msn the screen CRASHES and a lot of different colored dots or pixels come and i cannt to nothing but hardreset by the reset button.Im really worried because it the best computer i ever owned. My specs are,AMD athlon 64 2x dua; core processor 5000+ 2.61GHz.2.00 gb of ram.It has served me well over the 3-4 years i had it and im very happy about it until now. When it was purchaced from the store my father ordered to put the best video card the shop has and it was the limited edition Nvidia GeForce 8600GT.Now im really worried about losing this battle with this computer because i had problems before but nothing i coulnt handle but this is way over my head.I heard that u must upgrade your video card to fix this so im downloading it right now and giving u the detail later.Btw if PEOPLE are wondering its not the HEAT thats the problem because i have the cover open and i have a massive fan blow air in it and its not still working. So any ideas to fix this let me know and no i dopnt usually keep the cover open i have it closed.1) In the future, please just state the problem without the story - it's very difficult to read your post as it stands.
2) Try a new video card and/or try a different display. If they don't make a difference we can go from there. Quote

You should be able to download ANYTHING, regardless of what computer you are using.  Installing the files is a different thing.  Are you having trouble downloading or installing?
