maybe, just maybe, it requires Windows 95/98, and your running 2000? 2000 needs different drivers then 95/98, driver model is completely different.ok wait. i downloaded the proper Color Mangament Profile for my Monitor(ViewSonic Optiquest Q71) but that didnt help much but i found that everything execept for my icons were at the correct color. for example the IE Icon is dark blue(check the pic i attached) but its supposed to be a kinda skyish blue when in 16 or 24bit color. Any idea on how i can change that?

[recovering DISK space -- attachment deleted by admin]Delete the IE icon.....

I do this on all my machines.    Right Click the Desktop and go to Properties. Then head over to the Settings tab.
Try changing the Resolutions and see what you get.

Solve : Asus Eee PC 1000H WiFi problems?

Answer»

So i just bought a Asus Eee PC 1000H with windows XP, and the wireless internet will not work.  I called teck. support and they told me to download the required Drivers, but i am not sure how to transfer them from my PC to my laptop with a USB drive and then install the drivers into the Laptop.  If anyone could help me figure this out it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!Can you wire it up?

Any error messages when you try to connect wirelessly?Well, as much as I KNOW, If you have a USB flash drive plug it in our PC, and wait for 2-3 minutes for the PC to recognize the device. (If you don't have a flash drive, skip to option 2...) Then, it should appear on "my computer" as a removable device with it's own letter. Double Click on it to open it. Then download the drivers from the website, but make sure that you choose the DESKTOP.
After download finishes, Copy/Cut the drivers from the desktop and put them on the flash with a Right CLick>Paste. Then after copying/moving finishes, use  the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on the system tray to remove your flash SAFELY. Put the flash into laptop and you're ready to open it & install.

If you don't have a flash drive it get's a bit trickier.
First, go buy a CABLE with a USB plug on one side and on the other. Then connect the TWO PC's, and wait for them to recognize each other (use additional settings if needed). Using the internet on your PC download the drivers and then move them to the laptop's harddrive. (It should appear perfectly if you have connected everything right.) After copying finishes you can dissconnect the 2 PC's and go to your laptop to install the drivers.

Please IGNORE this advice ! !

Using a regular USB cable to connect 2 machines can result in damage to one or both of them....there are special cables for this task and it and it should have been mentioned above.

Go to the asus website with your PC. Now download the drivers and save them to my documents.

Now insert your flash drive. Go to My Computer and find your flash drive(probably F or G). OPen your flash drive and minimize it. Now open My Documents and re size it to about a quarter of the size of your screen. Now maximize your flash drive and re size it.

Place both of the folders side by side. now drag the drivers from My Documents into your flash drive.

Now you can plug your flash drive into your laptop and access the driver.

Solve : No sound after reinstall?

Answer»

I recently installed Windows XP Pro (previously had Home edition) and after the clean install, I lost my sound.  In the Device Manager, the properties for the Multimedia Audio Controller says: "This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)"  I ran Everest and it downloaded and installed Realtek, which solved that problem, but I couldn't install the driver because Windows kept giving me a message saying that the Windows Logo was not verified.  I've uninstalled Realtek and am back to square one because I can't seem to find anything that will work.

Here are the specs from Everest and I'd appreciate any help I can get!  Let me know if you need anything else.  Thanks.

downloaded and installed Realtek, which solved that problem
Solved what problem, since you couldn't install driver? The problem it solved was that the Multimedia Audio Controller was showing as not being configured correctly. It moved it from an "unknown device" to the "Sound, video, and game controllers" in the device manager.  However, it still showed an exclamation mark because there was no driver installed. When I tried to install the drive, the message I RECEIVED was:

"Realtek AC'97 Audio has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify compatibility with Windows XP.
Continuing your installation of this software may impair or destabilize the correct operation of your system.  Microsoft strongly recommends that you stop this installation now and contact the hardware vendor for software that has passed the Windows Logo testing."

I even tried uninstalling it and re-downloading it, making sure I was downloading the correct on for my OS, but got the same message. Why did you download Realtek driver, since Everest says Legacy Audio Drivers?
Your best bet is to go here: http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/dlcenter.asp, enter serial number, and get a driver.
I used the Driver Detective, which is what downloaded the Realtek for me.  I already tried going to the link you gave, but Gateway has been bought out by MPC and they don't seem to have a site you can download it from.  I was hoping to get it sooner than I probably will than if I have to TRACK down whoever I need to contact at MPC. Geuss I'm not going to have any luck.I checked your motherboard specs at Intel: http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/rg/, and it looks like it uses SoundMAX audio.
Then, I went to Gateway site, and checked E-4100 model (E-4000 is not listed), and indeed, it uses SoundMAX audio.
Try these drivers: http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?ref=step&st=browse&platform=10021&model=10613&os=10406&type=10096I've installed the SoundMAX driver in my Device Manager it now SHOWS that it's working properly and that I have the most current driver, but I still have no sound.Did you restart computer?
Did you check, if the sound is not muted?
What kind of speakers are you using? Built-in, separate, self-powered?

Solve : 2 hard drives but can only view one?

I have two hard drives (2x MAXTOR 7Y250M0). I can see both drives in device manager (both say working properly) but i don't know how to USE my second one for storage. My computer only shows one hard drive (C). How can i switch my other drive to be a seperate storage drive (D)?

Thank YouWhat Operating System?

What is the total capacity of Drive C?is the master set to cable select, and the slave set to slave? if you look at the hd's label it should tell you how to CHANGE the setting.

ps: wrong forum.Operating system: Microsoft Windows xp Media center 2002 SERVICE pack 2
Capacity (C): 250GB/ 239359MB

There is no settings info on the HD

How do i set to "cable select"?

Also, When in setup utility it only has options for SATA MASTER 1, 2, 3, and 4. No options for slaveI don't know about you but 250GB sounds like a pretty rounded number to me.
Can you confirm there are 2 hard drives in your computer. (open it up) Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on August 05, 2008, 08:58:26 PM

well i guess i should have specified, but to change their modes you have to ACTUALLY open the pc and look around the physical hd.

that would be cable select on this specific hd.

just above the GREEN dot on the right would be the table that shows what jumper pin settings are, not all hd's have the table in the same location.

**NOTE, YOUR HARDDRIVE MIGHT HAVE A DIFFERENT TABLE, the only way to be sure is to take out your hard drive and read your self**That's if he has 2 hard drives.

Based on the model number you PROVIDED, those are the drivers for your laptop. Make sure you've INSTALLED all of them, especially the chipset drivers which should be installed before all other drivers.other drivers are working... but there is no driver for wireless there... it is only a wireless assistance...Re-install the motherboard drivers first from the Driver CD that shipped with the laptop...

I'd avoid this kind of advices.Hi, I have the same laptop, I found your post when searching for the drivers myself.  I chatted with HP support and told them the issue and this is the link they gave me:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3224049

They said, when searching for HP drivers you put the series, dv9000 in this case.  Then you put a t after it for Intel or z for AMD based.  Then you search by OS.  There are lots of drivers on this page but I think that is due to different hardware on the sub model numbers.

Hope this helps.

Personally, I'd avoid advice from people who say not to change your hardware to suit you, rather than suiting Micro$oft or HP.

I have the same computer and had the same problem, except I wanted install Win2000. Drivers given in the message above mine are good and would probably have solved the problem, except that I had decided to switch to Linux, long before I found this thread and the better drivers.

I confirmed with a former HP tech that HP and many other manufacturers have started creating 1 or 2 hidden partitions on their drives and preloading the computers with adware. This is their right, and it's my right to take their adware off, once I've paid for and own the hardware. (Incidentally, this is also appearing in bare hard drives and USB drives. I strongly recommend repartitioning and reformatting any drive before it is FIRST used.)

Among other things, these extra partitions make it hard to repartition the system or install another OS. To solve this, I took the drive out, put it in an external case, took the case to another system, and used that system to repartition and reformat the drive. Then I installed Win2000, although the drivers I had at the time did not perform quite right. As I said, I later replaced this with Linux.

If you choose to load XP, I hope (and expect) that you will have better luck. If you want to try Linux, I'm working on a simple document explaining how to do that to include loading a Windows API enabler which will allow Linux systems to run Windows software. If I can provide further assistance, don't hesitate to ask.

Regards,

Adware on a hidden partition would never be seen...this doesn't make sense.

As previously said, I confirmed this with an HP tech. Besides, the partition only has to be hidden from the partition manager - that does not prevent an appropriate program from accessing it anyway.

As far as bare hard drives and USB drives coming with adware preloaded, I have received 2 of the first and 1 of the second. Maybe you will be lucky and maybe I'm paranoid, but I'd rather be paranoid than have to spend a few hours cleaning adware off my computer.

YMMV,
ToadI wouldn't take the word of an HP tech if my life depended on it...again if it's on a hidden partition it's not gonna be seen  ....PERIOD.

This has never happened to me with either.well some times it gets to the point where the only option is to re-image the entire machine.. but my advice is either:
1) download all of the drivers for your pc, and then put it on the disk and save it.

or

2) call the manufacturers customer service and ask for a their recovery disks for your type of pc. Quote from: patio on July 30, 2008, 01:10:14 PM

You made an assumption. Allow me to state again, "I confirmed with a former HP tech that HP and many other manufacturers have started creating 1 or 2 hidden partitions on their drives and preloading the computers with adware."

Nowhere did I say the adware was installed on the hidden partition. When I attempted to remove the partition, the manager showed two and wouldn't let me delete either one. When I extracted the drive, placed it in an external case, connected that case to a different Win2000 machine, it showed the 3rd partition.

I cannot say what the two additional partitions were for. My guess is that the hidden partition was what was keeping me from deleting the other two. The former HP tech I talked with confirmed that HP was attempting to make it hard to remove their installed system, although he either did not know how it was done or did not choose to reveal it.

Further, it ***IS*** HP's right to sell whatever they want to. They can sell elephant dung, if they wish. They can put a dead monkey inside of each computer they sell, if that's what they want to do. It's MY right to do anything I want with the hardware I own, and that includes taking off anything that HP put on it that I don't want on it. It's also my right to let HP and others know what they are doing, in hopes that HP will decide not to put adware on their machines, but that doesn't mean they have to agree with me.

In any case, I did remove the partitions as previously stated. Further, I was ABLE to get Win2000 loaded, although the drivers were not quite correct. I later replaced that with Linux. I have the same machine as the original poster and I'm trying to help him get XP installed. So you can make whatever comments you want about how what I'm telling you could NOT have possibly happened, but that's not helping the original poster solve his problem.

To "robertolmr"

The HP DV9627 comes with 2 hard drives. I suggest that a solution to this question might be: 1) Download the drivers that Macgyver777 suggested. 2) Pull the 1st hard drive out and replace it with the second. Now you have a drive without funky partitioning, and without taking a chance on corrupting your current installation.  3) Install XP using the driver set you downloaded.

If you get it to work, then everyone is happy. If you don't, you can still put the original drive back in.

Best of luck,

okay, my mother board is a MSI K8N Neo v2.0 H i tried using MSI's LiveUpdate thing to flash my BIOS there was an error during the Flashing and now my computer doesnt start. it gives me the option to put in a Floppy Disk but hat should be on this Floppy Disk to save my computer? the BIOS the old BIOS (which idk what my old bios was) or what? and as everything else for my computer i dont have the installation disk its with my bro in Japan. What do i do? Please Help. Thank You in advance. Why on earth were you flashing the BIOS ? ?
You will need the original Driver CD for that MBoard...perhaps your Brother will ship it to you or MSI will send you one....
HOPE you've learned your lesson.I'm assuming that when the BIOS flash died, it partially corrupted your BIOS, but left enough running that the floppy works. If this is not so, then my advice is worthless, however in that case, so is the advice of the PREVIOUS respondent.

I suggest you go to another computer, login to the MSI SITE and look around for a non-live BIOS flash utility as well as a copy of whatever BIOS you should be using. There is no reason to believe that both the flash utility and the BIOS itself will not fit on a single floppy. (Most BIOSes are less than 512 K in size.)

Build a BOOT floppy, put the flash utility and the BIOS on it, reboot your SYSTEM and sacrifice a virgin to the Computer Gods in hopes that everything will work. (Or send her to me.)

In the case of BIOSes, unless you are ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that you have a problem which can only be fixed by reflashing the BIOS, you should never reflash the BIOS. All too often people who do this WIND up buying a new motherboard. I hope things work out for you.

Windows XP doesn't NEED any drivers for optical drives.
You may have some CODECS missing.
What program do you use to play CDs/DVDs? Is video part working?I play there is no sound in the DVD. Where can i get the codecs? The Tv has got a tuner. Is only DVD sound missing?
Do you have Windows sounds?
Do you have sound on the internet?there is no any other sound from the whole sytem except from the TV. Even the saved mucic in mydocuments are not producing sound. Try this:Click START>All Programs>Accessories>Entertainment>Volume Control. You will see your volume control. Make sure you uncheck the MUTE BOXES and turn up the volume. Not sure if this will WORK but is worth a shot.Where did you download new driver from? The driver here may work with XP-->http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=PCGZ505LSK&upd_id=739&os_id=6

clearly you have the internet, so my ADVICE would be(if you can't find the CD) to go to the manufacturers WEBSITE and search the model number of your PC, if you have a custom pc, just search for drivers for the motherboard in google. or post it here, some one will help you find what you need.Pass.>Meanwhile back at the ranch

Solve : PS/2 to USB - Using any USB device!?

Answer»

I don't really know if this is possible..
but if anyone came across a driver for Windows 95+
that enables any USB device through the PS/2 port..
(Using a PS/2 to USB converter).

I want to use a USB SanDisk ImageMate CompactFlash
on my old notebook PC.. there are no USB ports. If there
is a such driver like this.. it may come in handy to transfer
files onto this laptop.. (in large quantities). This is not available.... The PS2 ports will only support ASCII and X & Y Mouse ( encoder wheel position counts ) and left right clicks etc.

The PS2 to USB plugs that you refer to will convert a backwards compatible Keyboard or Mouse to work on a PS2 port, but the Flash Media will not work in this manner. Also not all USB Mice and Keyboards wil work on these converters. The chipset in the mouse or keyboard has to support powering off of the PS2 port and then translating communications in Classic PS2 communication mode vs USB BUS communications.

If you had all the money in the world though, you could put together a contraption that would mount the Flash drive and then pass the connunications ( slowly) through ASCII and then decode the ASCII at the other end on the Windows 95B box, but its not worth the hassle.

Windows 95 also has very limited USB support. If you get a USB mouse to work on it, your having a GOOD day. Windows 98SE had better, but still limited support. The best support for flash media is Windows 2000 or newer OS.

Best bet would be to network the laptop via Ethernet if it has a PCMCIA slot that is older non-32-bit, or serial network through Null Cable, or Parallel LPT network setup....Or sneaker network ( copy files to floppy back and forth between systems ) ok as long as you dont hit files exceeding 1.44MB and you have 2 clean healthy floppy drives that are not filled with LINT from years of no use.

I have used both the serial and parallel method before for networking old laptops to new computers. The biggest problem is that most newer computers dont havefloppy drives or serial ports and LPT ports are also a dying feature on new systems.

Transfers for LPT communications is about 1.2k baud, and you can crank the serial connection up to around 115k if you have a null cable and serial ports available at both systems. If wanting to access this data from more than 1 system, you will need to go Ethernet.

Actually, Thanks for the info..
=) It HELPS.. I have already tried the
LPT direct cable connection method..

No luck. -.-
I have GOT the floppy drive
to work a bit.. though it only
handles one of my floppy disks..
(Strange?)

I do not own a null modem cable.. =(
Grr. I guess I will just use the split file
method.. =(

Solve : Display Driver has stopped responding and has recovered succesfully.?

Answer»

I've been getting this error since the guy NEXT door "fixed" my comp. I only get it while I'm playing Warcraft.

"Display Driver has stopped responding and has RECOVERED
Driver IGFX has stoped responding but has recovered"

I also cannot MAXIMISE video like say on Youtube. It all started after he mesed with whatever and I suspect both these issues have the same culprit, but I know jack about computers. Any help would be greatly appreciated as it's cuting into my gaming! =) Thanks in advance.

Oh it is Vista Business, if that helps any.The error "display driver igfx has stopped responding and has FULLY recovered" is an extremely common issue with Vista and can happen with any video card installed.........

Solve : Unable to update Radeon XPRESS 200M.?

Answer»

I have TRIED updating my intergrated Radeon XPRESS 200M drivers from the official AMD website twice now; upon downloading the drivers and restarting I am greeted by the blue screen of death. After using my Windows installation disk I used system restore which seems to have got everything working again. Any ideas on how I can update this driver without encountering these problems?

System Specifications:
1.50GHz
768MB RAM
Radeon XPRESS 200M

OS:
Windows Vista Ultimate SP1

I am on a TOSHIBA Satellite M50 laptop. Why do you need to update those drivers?Any error messages? Can you recall what the BSOD said? The BSoD lasted for what I'd estimate was less than an eigth of a second. I didn't get to see a glimpse of what the error contained.

I need to update these drivers for certain games I play. Now, after the system restore I am left with the default Microsoft Corporation GDI Generic.

My current graphics card problems were identified by the games client.

The problems are:

Software Rasteriser
Unsupported OpenGL Version
No Multi-Texturing
Insufficient Texture Units
No Extended Multi-Texturing

I have been to toshiba.com but it seems they do have not released drivers that are compatible with Vista.

Best regards,
JAMES. Quote

You may need new video card, then.Oh I just realized, Happy Birthday, James.

Laptops should ONLY use drivers from the laptop manuf. site...third party manuf. do not write laptop drivers.
I'm AFRAID you are stuck with what you have unless Toshiba writes new ones...

Just to be sure; Do I have to download those drivers to the laptop when I get it?? Or is those the drivers they come with or something??? Im not too sure on what thats for? After you install Windows XP, you should download and Install those drivers.

Are there any yellow question or exclamation marks anywhere?yes, i do not have the disk anymore, and it SAYS I cannot roll back the driver and no driver is found.  I also have the plug n play, but that is asking where to look to find the driver.  i am guessing that a full system restore may be neededDLoad install and run Everest Home...FREE.

Solve : Can't receive an IP Address from Cable Modem?

Answer»

My home computer is down!

I don't know where else to go!  I switched from ATT Dial-Up to ComCast.  I started losing my signal so they did a re-wire. I've been four Modems to make sure that was not the problem.  I'm not receiving a IP Address is the problem.  I have a DELL 8300, I've never had a router, there are no more computers in the house, I've done all the IPConfig/renew and /release stuff and finally the ComCast guys said they don't know what the problem is and "I'm sorry."  They were able to hhok up their ComCast laptop and get online but when they unplugged I still can't receive an IP Address.

It WORKED briefly on an earlier ComCast visit and a friend suggested I check for Windows updates.  So I downloaded a huge SP-3 file?  That updated but when I tried to do some other things the siganl went out and some little DOS window popped up quickly saying ACCESS IS DENIED several times.

Did I accidentally un-install something maybe?

Please HELP if you can!I'd get a Router and use that as your DHCP service to serve up your IP to your SYSTEM. This will also act as a front line for security to prevent an easy attack as long as you dont open up ports through port forwarding etc and just go with the basic setup and CHANGE its default password. Then follow these steps.

1.) Shut everything off, computer, router, and modem.

2.) Turn Modem on and wait about 30 seconds.

3.) Turn router on and wait about 30 seconds.

4.) Turn computer on and upon logging in wait about 20 seconds for your system to pick up an IP from the routers DHCP lease.

5.) Try to get on the internet now, and you should be able to as long s the Modem passed a single IP as it should have from Comcast ISP to the router, and the router gateways that out through its DHCP.

*** Make sure network settings are all set to dynamic including the DNS setting. Your computer will have to connect via Ethernet Cat5 cable to the router and ethernet cable between the modem and the router. If you are currently connected via USB to the modem, do away with that connection means as for it will just be a constant headache and load on your system to translate the USB bus daat packets, which will put a load on your PC.

Cheap router will be around $40 to $70, and cat 5 cables vary in cost on length, but be sure to get Patch Cable and not Cross Over Cables!!!

Good Luck!Could this be related to Zone Alarm?

Solve : Acer 6920G optical drive reads all disks as blank.?

Answer»

I just bought an Acer Aspire 6920G (Windows Vista) I'm trying to install some games onto it. I was installing the Sims 2 and then it it froze up. So I restarted the computer. Later on I tried to install it again but whenever it read the disk it didn't read it as Sims 2 ... it was just a disk. When I tried to start it up through the computer panel it asks me to label the disk and THINKS that the disk is blank (although it shows that there is 0MB free). I've been trying other disks and the same thing happens to them. It is definitely not the actual game disk, cause I've tried it on my other computers and it works fine there.

Any ideas on how I can fix this?

thanks. How is the CD/DVD drive being reported in Device Manager ? ?
Any yellow !'s there ? ?
Is this a copy of the game or originals ? ?Also...

Try one of these:
1. HTTP://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
or...
2. http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip
or...
3. GO to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

Solve : Having trouble burning?

Answer»

I'll TRY and give you as MUCH info as I know...

A couple of weeks ago we had a virus on the computer (not sure what it was sorry) but we had it repaired and all seemed fine.  But now whenever I am trying to burn my music to CD it's jumping and stuttering.  Burning it is no problem, that still works, but it's when I play the CD that it jumps.  I've tried using Realplayer and Roxio, different brand cd-r and trying them in different CD players(thought as first it was my CD player) but nothing changes.  Is it a problem with the CD-RW?

Any ideas?? Really appreciate any help

ThanksIt could be the burner itself...
DOUBLE check all connections are secure.
Remove it in Device Manager and re-boot ...Windows will re-install it automatically.
Finally try it in another machine...if it exhibits the same SYMPTOMS after all this the drive is bad.

Good Luck. Thanks, that seems to have solved the problem!   Excellent...Welcome to CH !...but, what exactly did solve the problem?I removed it in device manager and re-booted and it's WORKING fine. Thanks

Solve : Recommended driver update software??

Answer»

Hi,

Just wanted to ask if anyone can recommend any good freeware/shareware programs that will scan my system, accurately tell me what drivers are out of date, and will either download the relevant new drivers or provide links to the new drivers.

Some of these programs will also backup my drivers as a zip file in case I need to rollback a driver to an earlier version. A lot of these programs are trial programs and want purchasing before becoming fully functional, at a cost of $30 or more.

I just tried one of these - UNIBLUE DriverScanner (same company behind RegistryBooster 2, SpeedUpMyPC). Anyone tried it and can recommends it?

Also, from reading this forum, i am also now looking at the freeware DriverMax program.

A capable program that can do this task accurately, WOULD take the time and effort out of TRAWLING the web, looking for updated drivers for my system. If it's not broken, don't fix it!
Normally, LEAVE drivers alone, unless there is something wrong with them.

As for drivers backup, and restore, get DriverMax: http://www.innovative-sol.com/drivermax/

Solve : C drive now unknown??

Answer»

Hi all, My DESK top computer tries to boot up windows XP and as soon as its done it restarts and I get sorry windows had to restart DUE to a power cut,etc and to reboot, reboot to last known changes, Safe boot.
I tryed the safe boot and the screen filles up with alot of drivers names etcand restarts to the same page above. Once in while trying to get this to load I did finaly get to read the blue screen of death, it said windows had to shut down to protect it.

I tryed the reboot CD for this computer and when it gets to the partion to load on I have a E - with about 500mb room on it and instead of the C being the next one, it say's unknown. I can not load a new XP over it or delete it, so it seems my C drive has been changed to unknown?

So as far as I can see I have no way to switch it back becaues the computer won't stay on long enough for me to do anything, unless the reboot CD is in, but like I said It won't reload a windows XP.

Hello everyone. I'm having a problem installing a SOUND driver on my sisters computer. Every time I go to install it I get blue screen. She has a Dell Dimension 5200. I have attached a PICTURE of the blue screen error report. Maybe some of you can read it a little better then me. The driver I'm installing is WDM_A398 from realtek's site. I'm almost positive it's the right driver.

I have also downloaded the zip file so I could go into device manager, update driver and point to the files that I need. That also crashes the system. It's on board sound by the way. Another thing I have TRIED is just doing a complete windows update. It seems to download that sound driver but doesn't implement for some reason. This is a new OS install.

Any help that or clues to what the problem is WOULD be GREAT!

Thanks.   What OS is this computer using?  XP?
Does it have the original soundcard?
My guess would be that you're installing the wrong driver.  According to the Dell site, this is the proper audio driver:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/downloads/en/downloads_splash?c=us&l=en&s=gen&~mode=popup&file=165080

Someone will hopefully come along shortly who can provide further input/advice.Thanks for the input. I'll try that as soon as I can. It's running XP Pro and It's the original motherboard with onboard sound card.According to the Mothership it can be caused from anything to hardware incompatibility to faulty device drivers as CBMatt mentioned above.
Dell's are finicky. You should only use Dell drivers.

Solve : how to change name associated to a driver?

Answer»

how do u CHANGE the NAME of a driver?
for example: DEVICE=C:\CD-ROM\MITSUMI.SYS /D:MTMIDE01 to DEVICE=C:\CD-ROM\MITSUMI.SYS /D:MTMIDE000036

because i cannot install a game as the name of my cd rom (as my computer reads it) is CD1, and the name overlaps with a file in the game CD1.ifo, which causes problems when installing. i understand that the change can easily be MADE in config.sys and autoexec.bat but i am using windows xp, how do u do it?The below website seems to be what your hunting.

Solve : Empty CD in Drive?

Answer»

I got a new CD drive right but i dont wana put it in because ill have to take my whole COMP apart.  But the CD drive i have now will read a blank disc but it wont LET me open it.  Like its not on the E: drive.  Ask someone you know to help show you how to replace the unit...it's not that difficult.
As always when working inside the case remove all power sources and take ESD precautions.
Sounds like the other unit is wonked anyway.Usually a cdrom has a small hole for emergency eject in case the device fails. Take a needle or small pin, which fits into there and press until you feel resistance and the cd is released.

The hole is usually just below the SLIDE out tray.

Is this part of your problem?

If you got a new CD drive simple install instructions come
with it.

If that is a problem for you then patio gave the only
reasonable answer. IMDO.
I guess I have to ask why did you get it if you don't plan to install it?Well my friend gave it to me for free.  It not that the CD wont eject its that it doesnt show up in any of my drives on my computer.  I showes the little cd thing next to the mouse when i put it in but still nothing.  This is only for blank CDs though.  It will read CDs with stuff on it though. Is the one presently in your computer a regular CD-Rom,or a writer? Quote

This is only for blank CDs though.  It will read CDs with stuff on it though.

Then it's not broke. If its not broke how do i make it so that i can open a empy disc?  It doesnt even say that theres anything in the disc driver under my computer.A CD drive will not read an empty disk as the disk is empty....What do you mean see? Maybe what you mean is for example in Windows you make a folder, after naming it when you double click it you will see the blank SPACE inside. Is this what you mean?

Well your drive is not deffective since it recognizes CD's with contents, try right-clicking the drive and CHOOSE Open and don't double click the drive itself. I hope this helps. 8-) :-?

Solve : DVD writer doesn't work at all?

Answer»

Hi,

I have an HP pavilion a810n (about 3 yrs OLD) and the dvd writer (hp 630c) isn't working. OS is Windows XP.  I haven't used it in a while, and now the light doesn't come on and it won't open or close.  It is like the computer isn't reading it at all, but when I try to troubleshoot, in Device Manager, it says the 'device is working properly'.  I have tried uninstalling the hardware, but no change.  I took the tower shell off to make sure it was plugged in, and it is.  Is there anything else I can try before going out to buy a new driver?  Do you need any more specific computer info for this?Burners usually last about 1 to 3 years and then DIE.
Usually the optics die before the mechanical part dies but it can go either way.
You COULD try removing it in Device Manager...it should be automatically re-installed by XP on re-boot.
If this doesn't work swapping it into another machine should confirm if it is really dead...Thanks Patio,

I had already uninstalled the driver, but that didn't work.  When it booted up again, the driver was there as before, but still no life, despite the troubleshooting telling me it was 'working properly'.  I tried a 2nd time, same thing.  Drivers only last 1-3 years?  Isn't that kind of pathetic?

Thanks for your help tho'Well they actually used to last longer but this is the trend i've been seeing in the last 4 or 5 years.

newegg.com will sell you a brand new DVD burner for about 40 bucks shipped...not a bad deal. Quote

Thanks Patio,

He's speaking in general terms.  Some drives might last much longer, and some might not even last as LONG as that.  On one computer of mine, the drive went out after about 4 years.  On another computer, the drives have been operational for nearly 8 years, and one of them has only recently started to show signs of wear.  It all depends on the drive and how it's used.  But the average is probably about three years.  Thankfully, they're fairly cheap to replace.SWAG......... :-?

Did you try a different 4 pin molex PLUG from the power supply?

Rare but, possible for your power plug to be bad that goes to

Solve : Not Picking up USB Flash Drive?

Answer»

My Flash Drive was working perfectly fine yesterday when I used it for my research paper. Today I went to plug it into my computer and instead of getting a solid red light, my light blinks very faintly. I tried using it on my mother's computer and it did the same thing. Both computers are XP and I noticed on her computer where the port would recognize that the driver was installed but when entering "My Computer" it will show that the port is available until you try to open it, in which case an error box pops up stating to insert a device into the port. Is something loose or is did my Flash Drive malfunctioned and died on me? Better yet, is there anyway that I can retrieve my projects off my Flash Drive (I need them for my college courses). If you have any INFORMATION please don't hesitate to contact me. Thank you in advance!!
Are you using them on USB 2.0 (Hi-speed) ports?

It seems like the flash drive is dying, did you drop or otherwise crush it?Not that I know of... It's about 2 years old though and I do keep it on my key chain so that I don't lose it (again). Do you know if there is any way that I can retrieve any of the information cause it holds all of my presentations for my Business classes...? :-?A data RECOVERY company might be able to do it for you, but it's going to be costly if it's even possible.

CRAPOLIA!! Well I guess I better start trying to relocate my info and reconstruct my PRESENTATION all over again... Thanks for your help...   If ya hear of something cheaper lemme know...Are you sure you've used it on PCs that were able to supply the USB port with enough power?

You need at least USB 2.0 Hispeed and it is best to use the USB ports directly attached to the motherboard. Make certain no other USB devices are attached to any USB ports and try again.Well I've always used it on my computer for as long as I have had both (my computer is older than my TD) but lately my mom's computer has been giving me messages stating that there is not enough memory SPACE on the Local Drive, but that wouldn't affect my TD on my computer too would it? Quote

Not unless you get the same MESSAGE. Did you scan for viruses on both machines to be on the safe side?

You should still try to do as I said if you haven't allready.Well mine is strictly offline, so I don't have a virus scan on it, while Mama's has the internet connect and has been scanned. I don't know how to directly attached them to the motherboard, but there are 2 USB ports on the front of the tower and then an additional four in the back. I have always use the front ports, but how they are attached to the MB I dunno... any other ideas?Use the ones on the back.  And in regards to Mom's machine it sounds like she needs to do some housekeeping, back up some data and free up some space on that Hard drive or she will start having problems keeping that machine runing...

patio.  8-)Ok I tried the ones in the back and it had a stronger light but it still blinked out. The computer still found the device but it can't read anything from it (I get the "new device found" message but when I try to open it, I get "Please insert hardware"). I'm gonna try it tomorrow up at the college and see if I can get any better luck... til then I'm putting my stuff on my back up 128TD

As for Mama's computer... YES it does need some cleaning up but she doesn't know how and my brother thinks that he knows it all and tried to fix it up while he was home on R&R (he's in the army) but my sisters have done something to it since he left...

Thanks for all the help... :-/ Quote

If that made the light grow back stronger, you might want to try connecting it to a powered USB hub but I think the experimenting ends there, if that doesn't cut it, I'm out of ideas.Well I guess I could try that.... hopefully I'll be able to figure out something if it doesn't work... Thanks for hanging in there with me though I appreciate it.No problem, let us know if you ever get it back to work.

Solve : Blinking and disappearing cursor?

Answer»

If someone can help me, you will be my hero, because I have been trying to figure out how to solve my problem most of last night, and all this morning. I will try to give as much info as I can. My video card is an Intel 82914G/GV/910GL, which I recently updated to v. 6.14.10.4670. I believe I updated it in August. Previously, I had played Sid Meier's Pirates and Zoo Tycoon 2 on my computer without any problems. It was when I installed another game that was having problems that I chose to update my drivers. For some reason (I can't remember even doing it, to tell you the truth) I had disabled the video driver. Anyway, last night I tried playing Zoo Tycoon 2, and at FIRST it wouldn't open. That's when I discovered the driver had been disabled. I enabled it and the game opened fine, but the MOUSE cursor is absent unless I am scrolling, in which case it blinks rapidly while it moves. I tested Pirates this morning, and it's the same thing. I should add that I have not played either of these games since updating my drivers (prior to last night and today, I mean). In addition, yesterday afternoon, prior to enabling the driver, I downloaded and used Google Earth. I did NOT have the driver enabled, because I hadn't noticed, but everything seemed to work fine while in the program. AFTER I enabled the driver, the cursor did the same thing in Google Earth as it does in the two games. So it seems that the driver is the key here.

I tried updating my mouse drivers to see if it would help, but it doesn't seem to. I am so sick of fiddling, and I'm afraid I may have unknowingly done something I shouldn't have. All the help pages I've spent the last several hours perusing have been useless to me.

I know I should not need to buy a new graphics card, because everything worked fine before (I specifically tested these two particular games when I got my computer). My computer is a Compaq Presario SR1430NX Pentium 4 running o/s XP home edition with sp2. If you need to know anything else, I will oblige any way I can.

Thanks for your time...

CharTry another mouse...this one isn't wireless by chance is it ? ?

patio.  8-)No, it's not wireless, it's a logitech marble mouse. Prior to INSTALLING the driver updates, the mouse has never been an issue.

My husband thinks I might have disabled the driver when I was installing his old version of Redneck Rampage for him, which runs through DOS. I honestly can't remember what exactly I did, but I know I did do some configuring in order to get it to run for him.   Darn game, I should've told him I couldn't do it and left it alone!   I'm going to try uninstalling it and see what that does, if anything. Can you tell me how you 'disabled' the driver?
I went to Control Panel, then Performance and Maintenance, then System. Then I clicked the Hardware Tab followed by the Device Manager. I selected the Display Adapters and clicked on the +. That brought up my Intel Chipset. I right-clicked on it and chose disable. Think I did it to get another game or something to run, but I honestly have no recollection.   Sorry! I re-enabled it following the exact same steps.

And now how stupid do I feel?! I can't even figure out how to get rid of Redneck Rampage, because it isn't in Add/Remove Programs, and it doesn't seem to have an uninstall in it's folder. Not that removing it would probably make a difference. Just venting now!I maybe should mention, too, that the mouse cursor behaves normally otherwise. No problems online so far, no problems on the desktop or in any folders, etc.Redneck Rampage doesn't even come with an uninstaller, just remove it manually.

I doubt it's the games fault that your mouse stopped WORKING.

I think you should reinstall the videocard drivers and mouse drivers.

Most DOS/WIndows 95 games won't run under XP unless you do some very crazy things like you've done now.

You can always try Dosbox, which is freeware and a lot of games run quite well under it.If you disabled the Intel chipset you will need to re-install the motherboard drivers...

patio.  8-)The simplest thing might be to go into the properties settings and reduce the hardware accelleration. For some programs, having it set to maximum (default) can cause problems with the mouse pointer. Quote

patio.  8-)

My brother removed and re-installed the most recent drivers for the Intel Chipset. Is this the same thing, or is there something else I need to do? Are the motherboard drivers different from the updated drivers from the Intel website (here is where I'm exposing my lack of knowledge more than ever before!)   lol Quote

Okay! You are officially, though indirectly, my hero! lol! I had ACTUALLY tried this before, and it didn't do anything, but after I saw your post, I thought I'd play around with a bit more. However, I did not reduce the accelleration, but increased it all the way up to full, and surprise surprise! It actually worked! So thanks for the suggestion which got me motivated to play around some more, or who knows if I ever would have tried that again.

And how freakin' annoying is it that it was something so stupidly simple!!!!!!

Thanks to EVERYONE who took the time to post suggestions for me. This is a great forum, 'cause goodness knows, it's pretty darn tough to get a good answer from the actual makers of the software and hardware people have problems with. So thank you, thank you, thank you, all you great techies, you!

Because you aren't giving enough bloody information.

I lost my patience with you. Go bugger someone else by asking half-arsed QUESTIONS and providing just enough information to raise more questions.you know I find my question quite easy , either you know the problem and maybe you know the solution and so you can post that way I learn from it and maybe other members who have the same problem. Or if you do not know the answer you can propose a raisonnable answer or you just don't know and don't want to help in that post and you don't post.

Its really easy when you think about it, and also trying to prove the person who is posting that their question is stupid does not help in anyway in solving the problem.

Thank You

Al968Actually, I have a lot of suggestions, but your uncanny ability for asuming that we can read MINDS leaves me with one and I'm not allowed to say that one here. But I can assure that it involves dark places and no lubricant.

Solve : laptop touchpad?

Answer»

OK so I boot my laptop up today and  checked Device Manager to check my drivers becasue my TOUCHPAD wasn't working
Normally it shows up as "Microsoft PS/2 Mouse" under mice and pointing devices
However, it wasn't there
I selected show hidden devices and it shoed up with a yellow mark - "This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers INSTALLED. (Code 24)"
I have tried "update driver" and it says it couldn't find a better match than the driver I already have installed
I've ALSO tried uninstalling it, but then it asks for a reboot to complete installation and installs the driver again during the boot sequence, and it still doesn't work, same error code
No option to roll back driver
Any ideas or am I stuck with a dead touchpad?
I do have a warranty but last time I sent it back they reformatted it, I'd prefer to avoid this if possible as it's a pain to reinstall drivers, software and transfer documents (if I remember to back them up)What OS?Windows XP ProTry directing the SEARCH path to C:\windows\system32 when updating drivers.

If that doesn't work, download drivers from the laptop manufacturer's webpage.I've tried directing the path to C:\windows\system32, C:\windows\system and C:\windows\drivercache
They all say there is no better match for the hardware
There are also no drivers on the manufacturer's website (http://www.evesham.com) - that's the first thing I triedTry FN + F9 (you can toggle the touchpad on/off on some notebooks this way)
You can also check the BIOS to see if there is a setting to enable/disable the touchpad.
However, Code 24 usually means that either the hardware itself is bad or a new driver is needed.Have checked the BIOS and there are very few options at all, none related to the touchpad
I had been looking for a while for a way to disable it, as when typing or playing games it annoys me, keeps moving my cursor around
However, there was no option to disable it even in Device Manager
FN+F9 is mute volume on my laptop
The other Fn+key controls are switch DISPLAYS. brightness up/down, volume up/down, mute, sleep, num lock and scroll lockIf you are desperate enough you could try generic WinXP drivers from Synaptics.
If you still have no luck you will probably have to either send it back to evesham so they can install a new touchpad or go with a USB mouse.I do have a USB mouse but I need the trackpad for when I'm on the move
I'll try the generic drivers, I suppose they can't hurt
If they don't work I'll email Evesham and see what they say
ThanksNo problem, I hope you get it all worked out.
Since it's still under warranty I would send it back to Evesham with specific instructions to not format it. Honestly, I don't see any reason why they would need to anyway just to replace a touchpad.Actually it's just fixed itself
I tried it out of curiosity and it works all of a sudden
Didn't do anything else, it just works
Weird
Thanks anywaySometimes we are just that good.   Quote

Solve : Uninstalled Keyboard and Mouse Driver...?

Answer»

Okie.. this is going to be very funny. I had a keyboard problem at first, my USB keyboard just stopped functioning one day, and it couldn't be used (it didn't work) in windows. I could only move my mouse. I have a feeling nothing is wrong with the usb port nor the keyboard because when i restart, I could used it in the BIOS system, but when I get to the windows startup screen, it stopped functioning.

So.. I decided to search around the net and one suggestion was to uninstall the keyboard drivers, and I did. What I did was went to device manager, and uninstalled some usb stuff. In the end, I couldn't move my mouse or my keyboard, and when I replugged them, it auto-gona-installed, but I couldn't do anything cause my keyboard and mouse doesn't work anymore. So i restarted, and now I m stucked outside of windows, cause I can't get my keyboard or my mouse to work. What should I do now? -__-;Get a PS/2 keyboard and mouse because they ALWAYS work?

Seriously is this a USB only set, or a wireless contraption? Does device manager show any problems with USB ports? Do these items work correctly in another COMPUTER? WHat version of Windows? WHat service pack? More info needed.Yay! Ps2 does work indeed.. ^^ Thanks!

I used a ps2 mouse (the keyboard doesn't work, as it was the original problem) to access windows, and then open device manager and there was an icon with an EXCLAMATION mark in the USB HID (yep, the device manager showed there was a problem with the USB, but I m a noob so I didn't understand until then), so I uninstalled it, replug the keyboard and installed the driver.

The mistake I made before this (which I don't know why happened) was when I uninstalled one of the drivers, the other 5 disappeared together. Magical. >.<;

Anyways, thank you for helping, really appreciate it a lot! ^^Glad you are all fixed up. There is a message to all that when all the RF or other fancy gadgets fail, PS/2 input devices will continue to function and no drivers are needed to install. But NEW Dell computers Dont have PS2 Support

Try gently cleaning them with a soft cloth...The games are the originals and they are clean and i have tried cleaning them off and putting them in.  They didn't work right after i took them out of the boxAny other issues with the CDROM drive itself? What brand and how OLD? Any recent playing inside the computer CASE? Solve : modem not being recognised - driver needed??

Answer»

My video display had packed in, so I put my hd in another very similar machine I also had. It worked fine as expected, except it doesn't recognise the modem - it separates it into an unknown PCI audio device and an unknown modem.

If I locate the drivers on another hd that the modem is being recognised on, can I copy them and use them for the hd that does not recognise the modem? (same OS, etc)

I had a supposed professional come in and take a look at this, and he didn't seem to know how to do that - he gave me a bunch of drivers he downloaded and none of them work.

( of course, due to something like Murphy's LAW, I am not able to use both hd's - the spare hd bay is slightly too small to use one of them as a slave (awful way of describing that, but it seems to be the term that PEOPLE use) ........

( the IT guy also left a videocard, to override the video PROBLEM, and I do get a display with it but it looks like Windows Safe Mode and seems to be primed for a dual-monitor set-up. I don't really want to mess about with my settings w/o knowing exactly what I'm doing ) Quote

Why not? If the drivers you have are meant for that device and also meant for the OS you're using then there shouldn't be any compatability issues.Yeah, like I'm just going to act like what just happened didn't actually happen.

( the IT guy also left a videocard, to override the video problem, and I do get a display with it but it looks like Windows Safe Mode and seems to be primed for a dual-monitor set-up. I don't really want to mess about with my settings w/o knowing exactly what I'm doing )

This rude person came for help and acted like that.

No wonder the IT guy screwed him.Agreed. He's the kind of person who will end up dead and no one wonders why. The equivalent of road rage in cyberspace. Probably too much testosterone and too little grey matter. Quote

Solve : Computer not starting...agp driver problem??

Answer»

Ok if anyone has an IDEA i'd appreciate it.  My computer boots, gets to the "Windows did not START successfully, start with..." screen.  It will not start with safe mode, or last known good configuration, which is not a surprise, and when i start it in safe mode with command prompt all processes stop when it gets to the agp440.sys driver line.  I've had this PROBLEM before, and fixed it, but without really knowing or remembering how.  Anything I can do without having an XP disc to work with and before i just put it back to one of my ghosted copies? As always, Google is the first place to start. Here was the first hit:

Solve : Can't update iPod Software?

Answer»

I've INSTALLED iTunes 7 and it prompts me to update my iPod software when I connect the iPod.

But then it says that the iPod could not be updated because the firmware file could not be found.

What does this mean?It means it can't find the Ipod's software, I THINK..

Have you installed any non-Apple approvied software on your Ipod?what's the point of being updated??? there is nothing is going to CHANGE with your ipod... Quote

Uh yeah an ipod is hardware therefore new drivers will be released just like any video card or CHIPSET drivers etc...hardware always has UPDATES
Was everything okay before you installed itunes7?

Have you been to the below website?

Solve : Pre-ATA IDE Hard Drive (Connor 0P30104H)?

Answer»
Hello everyone,

I am trying to update SOMEONE's home office, replace their functioning-but-frustrating 1991ish 386 PC.
I'm having trouble transferring over all the existing data.

I picked up a a hard DRIVE enclosure, the 40pin adapter connects, but obviously I need to supply windows (XP) with a driver for something this old.  Does anyone have a pointer to drivers for 1991-or-so Connor hard drives?

Second best: Does anyone have a supplier for old 3.5" floppies?  I haven't been able to find any that will work in the 386's floppy drive.
(Would a relatively modern 3.5" drive even be able to read something that the 15 YEAR old machine formatted?)

Third best: Does anyone know of a reliable data recovery service that will tackle the job of transferring the files from this old but perfectly functional hard drive e.g. onto a CD?

Many thanks in advance Quote

Nero?

Does it not have an IDE driver interface?

If Windows doesn't pick it up, it might be because you need to manually configure it in your BIOS or perhaps because you didn't set the jumpers right.

I'm not that technically literate, let me know if this is non-responsive:

Everything works well enough for me to pull up the device using the Device Manager.
(I *think* that answers your concern about Windows picking it up?)
Under the General tab, it even says that the device is working properly.
Presumably this means the enclosure, not the enclosed drive, because when I look at the Volumes tab it say the disk type is unknown and the status is unreadable.

There is apparently no drive letter assigned, and DEFINITELY no "F:" icon available under "My Computer." I assume that some driver is required to let WinXP know how to read the hard disk?

Thank YouWhat OS was previously installed on the HDD? And the file system used?

Does the enclosure show as a HDD even when there is no HDD connected? I haven't had any experience with that. The previous OS was Windows 3.1, how do I find the file system used?
(I vaguely recall that it was "FAT"-something or other.)

I haven't tried attaching the enclosure without any drive in it.
Maybe I'll do that later, if I can't get the data transferred I'll have to reattach the drive to the old computer in a day or two anyway and go back to using that.

Thanks.I am not entirely sure, but I think Windows XP is able to read the Windows 3.1 file system.. FAT-16 most likely?

Can you give me the full name of the HDD so I can do some research on it?Are you sure the model isn't Connor CP30104H?

It should hook up with a 40 pin IDE Cable.

http://www.amitron-int.com/drives.htmPut the drive back in the old machine and boot it. At the DOS prompt, type ver and see what version of DOS it has on it. If it boots automatically into win 3.1, edit the autoexec.bat to rem the line that loads windows or exit windows back to the DOS prompt.I don't think Win95 ran on less than a 486. Later versions surely wouldn't.

If that is an MFM or RLL drive you amy be further SOL.

A floppy drive is the least of your issues.

Solve : usb controllers are not listed in device man?

Answer»

i have a compaq presario 6240IN.it was in non use for 6 months.when i started recently it is not showing usb controlleres in device manager.i have DOWNLOADED infinst_autol chipset DRIVERS but still the problem persists.i have made changes in USB legacy mode in BIOS set up without any difference.tape drivers are missing.

kindly advice

siddharthHave you perhaps disabled the device in the BIOS?

USB Legacy is not quite related.i have entered enabled INSTEAD of auto in the usb legacy mode but have not touched USB in BIOSWhat happens when you connect an USB device?

What version of Windows is installed?

What were the problems with the PC prior to putting it away?operating system is windows XP and there were no prior probems and all usb devices were working satisfactorily.but now when i load a recently purchased i pod it is obviously not recognized by the computer as the usb is absent in the device managerYou're virus and spyware free?yes.besides the disc formating was ALSO done. You have Servicepack 2  installed?it is pack 1That MIGHT be your problem. Update to Service Pack 2.hihi
the problem was ultimately solved by taking out the CMOS battery for a couple of minutes with the help of www.usbman.com

anyway thanks for your support and time.

siddharthThat's not right. Your CMOS battery might be running low if the BIOS is acting up. You should replace it just in case.
