Solve : DirectX and ISA sound cards?

Answer»

I've got a question to ASK.  I'm planning on removing the Ensoniq AudioPCI, and replacing it with a Sound Blaster AWE64 ISA sound card.  Will the DRIVERS for this card WORK with DirectX version 8.0?  I have never tested DirectX with an ISA card, at least I don't think.  I know that ISA cards are legacy cards.  The system that it's being installed on has Windows 95 and MS-DOS.  (Both the windowed mode and real-mode.  The only system that my family has left that has those operating systems is an HP Pavilion 7285 200mhz PC, which had the CD-ROM drive replaced recently, and is about to get its CMOS battery replaced soon.)DirectX should be backwards compatible, it has always worked fine for me with ISA sound cards.Okay THANKS.  I just wanted to be sure.

Solve : "The Data is Invalid",can't install drivers at all?

Answer»

Maybe this is for everything, but I've tried installing drivers for my PS2 Eyetoy a few months ago and it said "The Data is Invalid". Now, a few months LATER I get this PC Webcam thing, and I try installing the drivers for it. Guess what? The data is invalid again. What is this error, and how can I get rid of it so I can install drivers again?

ALSO, in Device Manager I can't uninstall the device. It will say "Failed to uninstall device. This device may be need to boot up the computer." IT'S JUST A CAMERA...Have you tried to uninstall by booting in safemode? :-? Quote

Have you tried to uninstall by booting in safemode? :-?

If I remember correctly from a few months ago, it wouldn't even let me uninstall in safe mode, but this time I got it to work correctly using it's Installer. Like how many programs, if you click the Installer after installing, will ask if you want to Remove, REPAIR, or whatever else. So it's uninstalled now. But like I said, if I try to reinsall it again, it will just give me the same error..

NEVERMIND I FIXED IT. I just had to uninstall XP SERVICE Pack 2 to install the drivers. Reinstalling SP2 now. :-?

That's not right.

Solve : Driver/Texture problem?

Answer»

Hi, I have been having this weird texture problem for awhile now. I think it STARTED when I downloaded the latest nvidia drivers.
Here is a pic of it: http://i4.tinypic.com/25z3r6g.jpg
This was with an old driver I downloaded to see if it would fix but instead it got worse, the latest driver VERSION has it too except much smaller in size. Some of my programs seem to be crashing now and I think it has something to do with this problem also. I dont have much of an idea as to what exactly the problem is. Could someone please help?

Edit: Got another pic of the problem when its really bad  http://i7.tinypic.com/25zh7cj.jpg

"Download Accelerator" utilities should be disabled when downloading any drivers.

Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing the drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly.

Before installing new drivers make sure you uninstall all NVIDIA display drivers from the Windows Control Panel. Browse to the Start Menu > Windows Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and search for "NVIDIA Windows Display Drivers" or "NVIDIA Display Drivers" and select remove

Is the below driver link the one you USED?

Prior to installing these drivers did you uninstall all Nvidia drivers from your operating system?

Solve : Network Controller driver?

Answer»

On my new Gigabyte GA-965P-S3 motherboard, the integrated network controller chip seems to be destroying Windows. I don't use the chip, and I don't WANT a "no cable connected" icon in my system TRAY. But when i disable the chip in device manager, the computer refuses to boot Windows correctly and begins destroying itself to a POINT where the only thing i can think to do is restore a backup of my hard drive created with Gigabyte Express Recovery 2. What can I do to get this thing to go away without destroying my computer?"I don't want a "no cable connected" icon in my system tray".  Let's say you want to leave it alone, but take it out of your task tray.  Open up Network out of your Control Panel.  Select that adapter (The on-board is a Marvell 8056 Gigabit LAN Controller) Select it, and go to properties.  Uncheck the "display when not connected" check box.

Another way would be to uninstall it in Windows, then disable it in BIOS.  There's a way in BIOS to disable the integrated network controller.   To get into it, press Delete as soon as the computer boots.  Go into the Integrated Perphials part of BIOS, and disable the Onboard H/W LAN.  I'm going by page 36 in the manual.

The 11 Mb English edition can be had here:
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/Manual_Model.aspx?ClassValue=Motherboard&ProductID=2321&ProductName=GA-965P-S3

For network connectivity, you can use an add-in PCI card instead.  I would recommend a 3Com brand NIC.

Also, I note that there's been three revisions to that board's BIOS since 7/20/2006.  Two of which deal with memory fixes.  You may want to see what version you are running.  Thanks for your reply.

When I disable it in BIOS, I get the same problem. Also, I have the F4 bios, the newest revision available at Gigabyte's website. I'm using a Belkin wireless card for network connectivity, but I would like to have my ethernet controller working but disabled. You might go to Gigabytes website and see if this is a "known problem" & see if there is a fix.

You'd think with the latest BIOS you'd be OK...but you never know  :-?

Alan <><  Some motherboards will not work correctly unless the onboard NIC is disabled if you arfe using a wireless PCI card.  well, technically the problem isnt actually harming my computer's performance, but it just worries me that its acting so strangely. i can connect to the internet with my wireless card (im using this computer right now), but i just dont like the fact that something on my brand new fairly expensive computer isnt working. I'd like to have my network controller enabled in bios but disabled in windows so that i can enable it occasionally when i need a wired connection.A NIC cannot fully initialize unless it is connected. Connect it to the router and reboot. Then go into device manager and select it properties and "disable in this profile". Reboot again and you should be able to DISCONNECT it with no problem. You can plug it in and go to device manager and enable any time you choose. Quote

This is doable.  Windows XP?  Enable the onboard NIC in BIOS.  After the computer boots, you should be able to select the adapter, right click and pick "disable".  I'm still puzzled by your ORIGINAL post that card was destroying windows.  How so ?yeah, this is exactly what i tried because i had this configuration on my previous computer. however, doing so causes windows to freeze up and upon rebooting i get various error messages such as:

"Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM"
"NTLDR is missing"
and if these messages do not appear and windows actually does start, i get messages about various dlls and then it freezes.

it seems like a very odd reason for all this to happen, but i have tried it numerous times and by just leaving it alone it has been fine for over a week, so im entirely sure that its the cause. i would like to fix it, though.

Solve : which Audio driver is installed??

Answer»

In win2000 professional,

Pl tell me how to find installed driver of Audio?

I find 2 sys files for Soundmax Integratd Degital Audio,

If for the same Hardware of another system

I have problem to install Audio driver Or prob to select which INF file.

I have the DRIVERS, facing problem to install manuallay

Tell us a lot more about the machine hardware and where you got these drivers as well as current problemsfor a relevant response. See below.I don't know all the differences between Win 2K and Win XP, and I'm referring to Win XP.  Device Manager shows some info on drivers.  Also, the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, dxdiag, shows some info on drivers.  To run dxdiag, go to Start, Run, and type dxdiag in the Run box.In my computer->PROPERTIES->Device Manager->sound,vidio & game contraller

there Is Soundmax Integrated Digital Audio

the sys files are aeaudio.sys & smwdm.sys  installed

which is not installed on another system with same Mother board & all h/w

pl help me to configure this driver MANUALLY, & which inf file I have to search?

I suggest you go here and do some reading: SoundMAX Frequently Asked Questions.  Question #2, "Why don't you provide drivers here?", provides links to various computer manufacturer's websites to download drivers.  Question #7 is "How do I install audio drivers?"

Solve : Don't know where to look...?

Answer»

A picture is worth 1,000 words I guess. It just so happens that my Audio and Video decided not to work after finally getting Windows 2000 PRO up and running. I'm running a Dell Optiplex 1ghz 256mb ram, 20 gigHD. I don't know what the video/audio card brands are (or if they're a combined card). I'd LIKE to know a quick fix or how to find out what BRAND my card is and where to get the drivers.

Thanks guys

Edit: Here's an error that CAME up when I tried to play something in WinAmp earlier.

http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/1653/cluebn6.pngDownload and run Everest. It will let you know what your hardware is.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.htmlThanks a lot, I got it!  However I didn't find one for this:

Intel 82801BA ICH2X - AC'97 Audio Controller [B-0]      PCI

The one I got I installed and REBOOTED then it brought up the blue screen of death and I had to remove it. If someone could give me a good site for drivers or be a totally awesome dude and actually find the driver for me that'd be awesome!!!You need to register for free membership at this site.We all use it.

I believe the below link is your driver.

http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=21043

You can go to Intel's site, look up your motherboard & download the drivers for your audio.

Alan <><  All of the drivers you need for a Dell are available on the Dell site. There is no need to look further. You do need to input the model number and the operating systgem. There are several Optiplexes to choose from, but you probably have a GX150.

Solve : Another video card dilemma.?

Answer»

Well, I was playing Counter-Strike: Source(A first-person shooter, and it's not a very stressful game to run, so I'm kinda lost why this happened)

So anyways, I was playing, and out of nowhere, everything went berzerk!  I mean, I changed nothing, I didn't trip over my computer, I didn't change any settings, it was completely random.

I have a picture of what it looked like
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g79/nealiol/test_hardware0000.jpg

Alright so, I downloaded the newest driver, and tried to figure out ATI's Catalyst control center.

Now, before I downloaded and installed the NEW driver, my games would launch, but they would look like the picture above.

Now, I get fatal error messages, and I just have no idea where to start.
One game gave me a detailed error message, and here is what it said:
FatalError:
Cannot set display mode!
It was UNABLE to find display mode with OpenGL acceleration.
Make sure you install proper drivers for your video card as recommended
in documentation and set your desktop to 16 bit (65536 colors).
PLEASE see ReadMe file for troubleshooting information.

I did the only thing I understood out of that, which was change my desktop appearence to 16 bit, but still nothing worked.

Also, Other things have slowed down. For instance, whenever I scroll down a web page it has to wait and load it, MAKING it very choppy.
Also also, when I start up my computer, when it shows the Windows XP icon and the little loading bar, theres a bunch of weird discolored boxes scattered around. It's really concerning/confusing.

I was wondering if there was something I could do to fix this? Maybe a file/folder that I can completly delete and just reinstall?

Thanks in advance. You might want to post some specifics about your machine and look in there to see if the fan is spinning on the card.

Solve : USB Drive Not Recognized - Flash Drive Recovery?

Answer»

I used my scan disk 2.0 GB on another computer and the computer gave me a message "USB Device not recognized.  Device may have malfunctioned."  Now when I insert my scan disk, I receive this message on every computer I use.  My office tech guy told me that the other computer fried by flash drive but there may be a way to retrieve my files on my scan disk.  Are there recovery programs?  Where can I FIND them and how much do they COST?    Doubtful if it's ruined and not even recognizedbut have a look:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=free+data+recovery+softwareI have a External HDD and when insert my HDD to the USB it says Device not Regonized.. so i restarted my system..
P.S. DOWNLOAD a Free Trial of Norton Partition Magic 8 it can be found here http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/Partition-Magic.shtml and open Partition Magic and see if your flashdrive is recognized there.. and if it is you are in luck and right click and select browse contecnts and  back up.. and reformat the flash drive..
P.S.S. I dont know if this will help but it did for me.. http://www.iolo.com/sr/4/ Download a free trial and run and recover..
More dubious advice, maksim. Partition Magic has nothing to add to this equation. How did you  come up with that?

Solve : Boot up errors?

Answer»

Must be the day for boot up ERRORS. Mine is dead at the BIOS after attempting to exhange my 13 gb western for a 120 seagate, everything hooks the same but now after letting the Auto detect find the drive SUCCESSFULLY and saving the changes to a LARGE drive it will not get past boot up screen on my Acer open Pent III 550 w/ 640 mem. The del key will not take me back to the BIOS settings and the F10 key will not reset.  Any suggestions?I would First Try booting the computer with the Hard Drives Disconnected , and See if you can get in to the Bios.

Then if it worked i would Reattach the HDD but to a Different IDE Port

It may be you Bios just cant Handel a Large Disk

There should be a way to limit the Disk SIZE by using the Jumpers on the Back of the Disk , limit the Disk size and Try AgainThank you, the F10 and del still didn't get me in with the HHD disconnected. Not sure of the next step.  The Big Hammer maybe? I did try using the jumpers for Master drive designation and Large drive configuration when I could access the BIOS.  The auto finder said the three configurations were#1 Auto, no luck, #2 LBA, no luck, and #3 Normal, same results.  Now I'm broke. If you cant Get into your Bios with your Hard Drives Disconected , i think you may have a mother Board or CPU Problem.

Just to make sure , disconect Every thing thats not required to turn on the Computer.

IE : All i want you to have is PSU, Mother Board, CPU, key Board, and Maybe GFX card,
Only have these hooked up and try to get to bios

It might be Time To Head Down to the shops.

Solve : Need help with Tape Drive Driver?

The system I have came with a TAPE Drive on a Adaptec 19160 SCSI pci card.  Windows sees the card but not the Tape Drive. There is not a NAME on the tape drive only the DDS-3 on the front panel.

Any Ideas on how tget the system to see the Tape Drive?

ThanksI am not that versed on tape drives but,LOOK at below site.

http://www.quantum.com/ServiceandSupport/SoftwareandDocumentationDownloads/DAT40Drives/Index.aspx#DriversYou might use Belarc Advisor or Everest Home to get a report on your system.  They might identify your tape drive and give you some info to help find a driver.  You'll need to find out who made the tape to get the right driver.  HP, IBM and Sony all made tape drives of that format.  Any way you can shut down the COMPUTER and pull the drive to look ?

Also, do you want Windows to your backups or were you planning to use Veritas/Arcserve ?

I cannot determine the problem or the solution with the given information. Please, kindly provide:

1. The system specs of your computer

2. In what program, if any, you receive this message.

3. The exact text of the message (a screenshot would be handy -- see this guide for instructions on doing that).

If you need to, duplicate the error to perform steps 2 and 3.

The CONFIG_LIST_FAILED bug check has a value of 0x00000073. This indicates that one of the core system hives cannot be linked in the registry tree.

Parameters
The following parameters are displayed on the blue screen.

Parameter Description
1 1
2 The NT status code that led Windows to assume that it had failed to load the hive
3 The index of the hive in the hive list
4 A pointer to a UNICODE_STRING containing the filename of the hive

Cause
The registry hive in question can be either SAM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE or DEFAULT. The hive is certainly valid, since it was loaded successfully.

Examine Parameter 2 to see why the hive could not be linked in the registry tree. One common cause of this error is that Windows is out of disk space on the system drive (in which case this parameter is 0xC000017D, STATUS_NO_LOG_SPACE). Another common problem is that an attempt to allocate pool has failed (in which case this parameter is 0xC000009A, STATUS_INSUFFICIENT_RESOURCES). Other status codes must be individually investigated.

I'm sure only Eggheads fully understand this stuff. No offence Rob

Solve : Re: video card driver?

Answer»

No what you have is what you have. You may be able to get a BETTER video card but we would need to know the model number. If you don't know, you can download BELARC Advisor (free at www.belarc.com) and find out that and a lot more. 256 RAM isn't much if you're running XP, but you didn't BOTHER to state that either. What processor would be interesting as well. Belarc can tell you. Quote

There is another way of making it a bit better is to overclock it ALTHOUGH it may fry it and it is VERY Risky. IM just saying that there is another option..

My sister has a pentium 4 1.7 ghz with windows 2000 and whenever i TRY and run computer games from the cd drive the game are very jumpy and can not be played i have tried CHANGING the graphics card, added more ram changed the cd drive and the ide cables used to connect the cd drive.   other software that are run straight from the hard drive work ok.   The motherboard is a QDi Platinix 2 however i do not know which chipset manufacturer is on the board VIA, SIS or intel but i have tried installing the VIA IDE accelerator driver however this does not work so i am guessing it is more likely to be SIS or Intel.   Any assistance would be very much appreciatedFirst find out ALL the  information about the system. Post the report here:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

What preceeded this? Has it always been this way? What background processes are running? Do you have Norton installed, by chance? Are you free of malware? What games?

See below.I have DOWNLOADED the software to see about all the computer information but as yet have been able to run this but will get back to u with the information.

to answer your other questions this used to be a works computer that was reformatted so that no work related information was on it, It has been like this since the reformat but i do not know if it was like this before as the use of the computer for games and stuff from the cd-drive was not used.   No norton is not installed. the computer has not been connected to the internet so i am guessing that the machine is free of malware.  i am unsure of all the games that she is having trouble with but i do know that one is ski resort tycoon.

i will probably be not able to get back to u with the other information until later in the week or early next week but thanks alot for all the helpThe games may require more computer power so be sure and list a few of them as well. We'll leave the light on.The games that are being used are the following:
wildlife park gold edition
ski resort tycoon 2
colin mcrae rally
command and conquer tiberian sun
and rollercoaster tycoon 2

from the few that i have looked at the minimum or recommened specs of the computer should be able to cope with theseRunning from the CD is slower and cause jerkiness all by itself as the CD has to be repeatedly accessed and it is inherently slower than a hard drive.

We still don't know about your hardware.Sorry for the delay i have finally got some information from the everest software you had suggested and that is:

Operating system = windows 2000 service pack 4
direct x version 9.0c

motherboard
cpu p4 1.6
name = qdi platinix 2
chipset = intel brookdale 845
memory = 768 (pc133) sdram
bios = award modular

Display

audio = ac97

hard drive = maxtor 20gb 5400rpm ultra ata100

Solve : Motherboard audio driver?

Answer»

Hi,

I have had to put a new hard drive in my PC, in doing this i have found that i lost my back-up cd for my system.

I've installed brand new VERSION of win xp sp2 onto new hard drive but now i find that i can't get my audio to work?

My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-8 SIMLNF. Ive been on the packard bell website and found my system (iMedia 3055) but all it said was "This might be your bios but if your not SURE don't download it?" yeah cheers then!

Is there ANYBODY that might know where I can get the driver from or that can offer some advice

Cheers That LOOKS like what you need:

Solve : Re: laptops and printers  (XP)?

Answer»

I'll try that again....

I've gt a new laptop with no LPT PORTS only USB.

I've got two different HP printers a deskjet and a laser...

Bought a USB lead and plugged them in and installed the drivers bought neither is working or printing the test page.(used wizard)

When going through the Wizard to install I couldn't find the option for USB so I selected LPT1, I think this is whats causing my problems...

It's either that or that darned DEP program which will not allow me to open anything in control panel Quote

When going through the Wizard to install I couldn't find the option for USB so I selected LPT1, I think this is whats causing my problems...

You didn't mention what OS, but, being a new computer, I will ASSUME XP. If this is the case, you DO NOT need the wizard. simply plug in your USB cable and windows will do the rest for you. If, upon starting the wizard, you read the first screen, it will mention this.
ALSO, are these USB CAPABLE printers, or did you buy one of the USB to PARELLEL converters?
Good Luck.
Uninstall in add and remove programs, then reboot and reinstall the software and THEN plug in the printer. THat is the customary HP way. There's usb ports on the printers. I can only assume that this makes them usb compatible but I don't think they are plug and play as they're not recently purchased....

Tried just plugging them in and was waiting for the screen to say new hardware detected but it never came...

Thanks for the assistance will go and see what the craic is....

p.s. whats a usb/parallel converter....

just noticed that the usb lead is 1.1  does this make a difference??? :-?You should be able to go into control panel/printers and select the printer. Right click and select properties. Under the details tab, select the port to print to.I would go into control panel/add-remove programs and remove any and all printer programs. Then go to printers and remove all installed printers. Reboot the laptop, plug in the selected printer to the USB port, let windows find it and ask you for the drivers. Windows XP may even have the drivers for your printer already. If after trying this, the selected  printer still refuses to cooperate, go to its properties and make sure local port is selected.

Good luck

Solve : graphics card driver help?

Answer»

Hello, I just recently formatted and reinstalled windows on my computer, and Everything works fine but there is still 1 problem. i play this game called counter-strike and before i reinstalled windows it ran GREAT, but now its laggy and crappy. i have all the drivers installed on my computer but someone told me to get the driver for my graphics card from the manufactures website and not from the hp website. the problem is i cant locate the driver or the website. my graphics card is a VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP. can someone please find the most recently updated driver for it  Onboard graphics are NEVER a good idea with gaming, and that one is no better than the rest. Did it ever work better than that? I suspect not, and it never will.  it worked hella better before i reinstalled the osWhat are the specifics of the machine? Make/model, motherboard, PROCESSOR, RAM, OS, service packs, etc?i think this is what you are looking for

http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=371298

but you have to register which is free and download the file

or
TRY this
http://support.necam.com/downloads/search/default.htm

Please can you help!!!
I have just got a new computer and I took the graphics card GeForce 6200 (512mb) out of my old computer and there was no slot to put it in the new computer and so I put it BACK into the old. I started the old computer up and the screen was blank! So I took it out and started it up again and it worked perfect, do you think the graphics card has blown, and also is it true that not all computers have slots for graphics cards as the new computer had slots but they were too close to the casing and the graphics card was too long so didnt fit!
Please can someone help!
Thanks! You need to find out what slots your motherboard has - AGP, PCI or PCIe and use the appropriate graphics card for that.

If you list your specific motherboard make/model we can advise further.

Solve : no sound and no ethernet connection?

Answer»

This computer has given me nothing but trouble the past few months   .  Anyways, I have an IBM ThinkCentre M50 Type 8189-E1U.  I recently (last week) switched reinstalled windows after running Ubuntu (doing so because I need it to be compaitable at school) and now I have no sound and cannot connect to the internet.  I checked every possibility when it comes to sound.  It wasn't detecting the drivers so I got the driver from the IBM website.  Even though I installed the necessary driver it still says no audio device available under the "Sounds and Audio Devices" in control pannel.  Mind you the sound was working just fine when I had Ubuntu on there and even before when I had windows.

Secondly I have problems connecting to the internet, when I was back at school and still running windows I had no problems with that.  So after reinstalling Windows and my noticing the sound problem I wanted to connect to the net to download sound drivers and ran into a secnod wall.  In the hardware wizard "no ethernet controller" is detected (I forgot to check what code it's throwing).  I also tried installing some driver but with no luck.  I opened the computer up and looked to see if I have an ethernet adapter, not sure if I see it but nothing has changed hardware wise since I lived at school and everything worked fine then.

I'm sorry if I'm not clear enough.  I'm just really frustrated at this point and it's kinda late.  If you guys need me to clarify anything let me know.  Also during the windows installation, during the setup process when files were being copied into the computer a few .DLL files were unable to copy along with a few others, could that have any effect on my problems.  I did try to reinstall windows a few times but each time I do the same files won't copy. Yes it could. I am assuming you are using XP although you didn't SAY. You did well to include the model numbers of your machine.

Here are the listed Ethernet drivers for that model. DO NOT use Windows update to update your network card drivers, ever!

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-57033

The audio is a little harder to find for that model type. I see three audio drivers, but none specifically for yours. How about running Everest Home and seeing exactly what is in there?

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Since Lenovo took over things are harder to find. Sometimes it is easier just to get an add on sound card and disable the onboard audio.

Sorry, I am running WinXP.  I have installed IntelProSet previously but to no avail.  I'll try it again and same with the soundcard.  I'll let you know how it went.So I installed the necessary drivers for the ethernet (FINALLY got connected to the net) and I also installed the sound drivers.

I still have a problem of no sound.  During driver installation for my sound card there was an error in loading the file streamci and streamci.dll, it said that the specified module could not be found.  Also when I want to go to volume CONTROLS in windows I am told that there is no active mixer device available.  According to Everst I have Device Description Intel 82801EB ICH5 - AC'97 Audio Controller [A-2/A-3]      PCI  but I got the driver from the lenovo page (I downloaded the ADI SoundMax driver).

If you got the correct Soundmax driver is the only issue. They are both supersets of the basic AC97 driver. As I said I only saw three listed, but none were for your specific machine type. Look at the descriptions carefully.

I downloaded streamci.dll and pasted it into Windows > System32.  Then I reinstalled the driver I had and viola sound came on.  Thank you so much, you have no idea how frustrating it has been to deal with this stupid little problem for the past few days. You're welcome and thanks for posting back. You had done your homework well and posted all of the information needed or the issue wouldn't have been solved this easily. (I wish every one did that! Kudos to you.

Solve : Sound card driver problem?

I recently did a system restore and for some reason my sound has now stopped working. My computer didn't come with a sound card driver CD so I have no idea what is going on now. I think this could be the problem but I have no drivers to install to it.

Run Everest Home, have it make a system SUMMARY and post it here.

Solve : PCI without drivers--code 28 and code 1?

Answer»

I can't get the drivers for my PCI Device installed. I'm running Windows 2000 professional edition. I have the drivers on my desktop--the Creative Soundblaster AudioPCI diagnostics, and "Audio: Analog Devices AD1885 Integrated Audio version A19." I was originally getting a code 28 on the PCI, "drivers not installed." So I followed the directions on the Microsoft site and uninstalled, then REINSTALLED the PCI. Now I'm getting code 1, "the device is not configured correctly."

I KNOW where in my SYSTEM--or I think I do--the driver is, but whenever I use the hardware wizard, it tells me there aren't any drivers in that location. Quote

You do not need two separate drivers for two separate devices. How did you COME to download these?

Download and run Everest Home to see what is the correct audio driver you need.

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Info/Everest-Home-Edition.shtml

Is this an onboard chip or an add on card you are attempting to use? What computer or motherboard make/model?

Run the System report and post it here if you do not know these things.
The IT guy did it (the drivers and sound device), couldn't get the sound working, and hasn't been back. The beeping is driving me CRAZY. So anything on this computer is not my fault--I'm just trying to fix it. And I know very little, so I need step-by-step "go here and click this, type this," type instructions. My gratitude for your help is eternal.

I downloaded and RAN a report, which I've attached. I've never used Everest before, so I'm afraid I don't know where IN Everest to go to find out what driver I need.  :-/Here is your sound chip:

Analog Devices AD1885 Intel 82801BA ICH2X - AC'97 Audio Controller

So the Soundblaster driver is wrong and may have fouled things.

More importantly you have a GX150, so ALL of the correct drivers are on the Dell site. The one for the sound is here:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R45973&SystemID=PLX_PNT_P3C_GX150&os=WNT5&osl=en&deviceid=691&devlib=0&typecnt=1&vercnt=2&formatcnt=1&libid=3&fileid=53829

Click on where it says Download Here. Save the file and then double click on it to install the drivers.

Before doing this go to Control Panel and remove and entried for sound (near the bottom)

What happens now after the new drivers are installed and a reboot?

(Your IT guy did you a disservice. I don't trust his judgement.)Okay, I have the driver, but I'm not clear on what I'm supposed to remove.Go to Control Panel and remove any entries for sound (near the bottom)

If this has been done, or you see no entries or you do not know what to do, just double click on the file you download and when asked choose "Run From Current Location" and take the default choices.

Reboot the machine.

Post back.

Solve : Please help lost drivers everything is huge!!!?

Answer»

Okay, I am not very computer savy as I thought that I was whenever I started this aweful project, basically what happened was that I reinstalled windows xp on my computer and deleted all the old stuff losing all my drivers. I got a lot of them back but I am missing an important one.. My video card driver. I go into properties to try to see the one that is installed on the computer and all its says is VGASAVE.. I don't think that that is a type of video card. Anyways could someone PLEASE let me know how to figure out what kind of video card I have EVERYTHING is in 640 X 480 and it's driving me crazy because I can't fix it !  THANKS!!!!!!   I'd be very SURPRISED if XP didn't have drivers for your video.
Go to the Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager and remove the existing video drivers.
Then re-boot & let XP detect & install the drivers for you.I went into my device manager .. I didn't see anything even SIMILAR to a video driverDisplay Adapters. Nope, no display adapters.. can i open my computer and look?Download & run Everest, let's see what it says.
Select Computer>SUMMARY>Report and save it as a text file to paste in here.
http://www.comcen.com.au/~fed/everest.zipYou can almost CERTAINLY download your video card drivers... if only you would tell us your video card! That is my problem Neil, I know I can download them. I just don't know what kind of video card that I have.Download and run Everest. It will tell you EVERYHING about your computer and components. Just have it make a report and post it here or tell us the motherboard identified as WELL as the video adapter.

Solve : built-in infrared device!!!! HELP!!!?

Answer»

in the device manager screen my built-in infrared device has a yellow exclamation point next to it and my screen is blurry. HELP how do i fix this? when i reinstall it doesnt help it stays the same We have absolutely no idea about the computer, operating system or specs. See below and try again.  its an e-machinew2888 running windows 2000 professionalAnd this is a desktop? Do you have a real Windows CD or an eMachine retore CD? Have you checked the eMachine site for drivers for that?the MOTHERBOARD went bad on my computer and i put a new one in but the drivers wernt the same so i had to put windows 2000 PROFESSIONAL on it and the restore cd's wont work with the new motherboard and no emachines dont have driver downloads on there website. it is a desktop. and i lost my windows xp disk that came with it. how do i fix the built in infrared thing so it will be normal again.

p.s. what kind of windows xp disk do i need to buy to upgrade from windows 2000 professional to windows xpSo what you need is the drivers for that particular motherboard. Do you know what it is? If not, then run Everest Home and post the report file you can GENERATE here.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

You are right that the restore CD's from eMachines will NOT work on another motherboard. If you have a Win2000 CD, you can use the Upgrade Edition of XP (about $100). The drivers for eMachine are irrelevant now as well, that's why we need to know what kind of equipment is in there. Infrared may not even be an option on the new motherboard. Have you ever had it on that one?i heard that u cant upgrade from windows 2000 professional to windows xp without buying the 200$ disk i thought you can only upgrade from win98 and win ME. i dont want to buy it and then be out of luck. i put the disk in that came with the motherboard and it doesnt have the driver on it and i can find it on that website either. What is the otherboard make and model. Many don't have infrared capability.

XP can upgrade from 2000. It is more recent than 98 and only slightly before ME.http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/upgrading/matrix.mspx - take a look at this. You can always get an OEM XP. It is the full product and requires no previous ownership.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16837102067is it difficult to install the drivers. if i buy that i have to install drivers right? Quote

What is the otherboard make and model. Many don't have infrared capability.

If you know that all drivers can be found. If you don't know, DOWNLOAD and run Everest to  find out.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

If you have them ahead of time and burned to a CD you will be ready.  do you know if they have this at best buy its not on there websiteCall and ask. What you want is the OEM edition then, not the upgrade. If not Best Buy do you have any computer shops nearby? Mail order will be CHEAPER and just a little slower.ok thanks for help

Solve : Realtek AC'97 not functioning?

Answer»

I have Realtek AC'97 based integrated sound. I recently reformated and installed all drivers but the Realtek one won't install properly. The computer detects the integrated sound and I point it to the driver disk. The drivers seem to install right to the end of the installation and then right at the end the computer imediately restarts. Then it starts up exactly the same asking for the driver disk. I looked in Device manager and there is a Code 1 error for the sound. Everything in the BIOS seems fine. I've tried getting the newest drivers but still the same problem. The sound worked before the format.

Ummm, do we get any details about the system involved? Is this onboard sound or an add on card? Did you load the motherboard drivers? What computer or motherboard make/model?  Etc., etc.? See below. It is onboard sound. I don't have a motherboard drivers disk but XP SELF installed all drivers but the RealTek one. I'm not sure of the motherboard model but it uses a PIII I think. I won't be ABLE to access this computer untill tomorrow. Then I will be able to get all the necessary info. While you're at it, see if the driver disk has its own installation or setup program. If it does, go into device manager, remove the sound device, use the setup program on the driver disk, and reboot. You can download and run Everest Home and see all of the information about the computer that you should know, and we will have to know to give pertinent help.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.htmlThe driver has it's own install program which only installed partway and rebooted. I did the UNINSTALL in the device manager and installed the driver program and tried the driver folder, still both with the imediate reboot with no success. I'll install Everest tomorrow. My specs:

http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P4P800-MXNo, I didn't get my drivers from there. I'll download those and try them out.Be sure and uninstall the ones you have tried, if possible, first. Quote

I'm not sure of the motherboard model but it uses a PIII I think.

cant be a P3, has to be  P4 or celeron D, realtek's AC'97 audio is usually 6 channel output (5.1 surround), or a 2.0, either way, it was ONLY used on mobos with a 478, or above socket type

EDIT: i know this simply because my MSI board uses AC'97 audio, works great usually, and i love the SOFTWARE EQ, but, i have had some issues with this chipset, nothing major, just a few minor issues, mostly when the computer was used by multipul people with multipul accounts Quote

You MUST be tired again. AC97 goes back to some PII boards and originally was 2 channel sound only.I fixed it. I uninstalled the non-functioning drivers and installed the right drivers from ASUS for this particular board.Good for you and thanks for posting back.

SD-C2402.....and my model number is SD-C2502....would this DVD drive work on my laptop?  Its off my one DIGIT....I dont know if that would make a difference??

Solve : Primary hard disk drive?

Answer»

My Laptop is not wanting to boot up. When I turn it on it says "primary hard disk drive not found, fixed optical drive not found. Under that it says No bootable devices. I have no clue what the problem is. I am running windows XP home edition. Please help!!!!Do we get any clues about the MACHINE. how OLD it is, what happened prior to this, etc.? See below.

Go into the BIOS/setup and see if the drives are recognized there. It may be a failure of the devices (both at the same time from mechanical causes is unlikely) or the IDE controller and therefore the motherboard.

Without more INFO we are just guessing, but it sounds like a trip to the shop is next.  It is a Dell Latitude C800. It was working fine and then a screen came up that said begin physical memory dump and the computer shut down. I tried to reinstall windows thinking that might fix the problem but it gave me the same memory dump screen. So now all I get is the Primary hard disk drive not found screen. I hope this info helps.....Did you dislodge the hard drive by picking it up by the drive holder by chance? SOMETIMES those can be PULLED out just enough to cause this symptom.

You can try pushing it back in and rebooting. Here's a picture.

Solve : Pointing device not working.?

Answer» PLUGGED USB Logitech Optical MOUSE into SONY VAIO laptop, removed it and the touchpad no longer works.  Looked in BIOS and could not see any options for the touch pad. The touch pad should come up in device MANAGER. There is a folder on C drive called pointing device with the ALPS drivers which would be the drivers, but the touch pad is not in device manager.you ALREADY posted this in the other category. posting here is redundant!Topic locked to PREVENT confusion. Solve : Reinstall Ethernet Driver w/out disks needed?

Answer»

A Friend of MINE gave my daughter a computer. Once we got the computer it crashed and we had to restore SYSTEM (Windows ME).  Now I cant find the drivers I need for my network card (Conexant PCI Ethernet) so I can't even access the internet.  The network card was a add-on and we don't have the disk that came with it.  How can I locate these drivers I Need?
The modem is CONEXANT PCI ETHERNET 56K ITU VERSION .90 PC INTERNAL FAX/MODEM. That is all the information I can get from the system.Download and burn to a CD Everest Home and run it on the affected WinME computer. You will get the exact name of the device and we can go DRIVER hunting. A wrong driver is worse than no driver, so please write it down carefully.

What computer or motherboard make/model? Everest will tell you that too.

Solve : floppy wont work...?

Answer»

i have a costum build pc i just build and i was wondering why my FLOPPY drive light is always GREEN and when i try to SAVE SATA drivers onto various different floppy diskettes it reads, "please insert a disk into drive B". Also it shows two floppy drives Floppy a, and floppy drive b. i dont understand this because i only have one floppy drive installed...  could it be a bios related issue?
System specs:
pentium d 930. cpu
asus p5n32-sli deluxe mobo.
(2x1gb) 2gb of gelil ram.
bfg 7800gtx oc 512mb gpu
etc...
Problem simplified: I have two CD drives that work but the floppy isnt reading properly, i know this because i have tried many blank diskettes.
I would very much apreciate it if someone would help me out..
Jr.If the floppy drive displays a green light all the time, then the cable is most likely backware, either on the mobo or on the drive. Did you just build this machine? Did it ever work right?

What is in the BIOS for "switch floppy drive" or some SIMILAR option. I suspect if the drive is cabled correctly and you are set to fail safe defaults that issue will go away. You can always fine tune the other options later, if needed to enhance performance.

Solve : Hey, where'd my CD-RW and D: go??

Answer»

I have no idea how to fix this, PERHAPS one of you guys could help me...

For some reason, I cannot access my D: and CD-RW. I go to "My Computer" and they don't exist. I put in a CD into my D: and it doesn't do anyting. I think this happened after my computer automatically restarting when I installed video software onto my computer.

Please help me get back my drives. Any help would be wonderful. What software did you install? What if you uninstall it? Does that fix it? Can you do a system restore to before the installation? The software is DXG-506V Ver. 1.01. I installed the software intitled "Drivers" and "VideoWorks6". I didn't get to installing "Mr. Photo 3" because I was no longer able to access my D:. As you suggested, I tried uninstalling the software - that did nothing - and I don't know how to restore the computer to what it was before hand.

Any more advice?Did your software have a cd burning capability?
Google cdgone and see if that applies to you.

Edit: Research it first & don't forget the part about backing up the registry before running it.Well, that didn't work either...

Are there any problems showing up in your Device Manager? There are no errors in the device manager.

For kicks, I thought I'd do a few more things: I did a spyware check and nothing was out of the ordinary, I did a virus check and there were two trojan horses (which I got rid of but nothing happened afterwards).

Also, I thought I'd check the disc manager and I cannot add the drives I need.

I remember having a simular problem with my previous computer; I took the computer to Future Shop to have it fixed by a guy named Dale. What he did was, as the computer was going through it's start up, he pressed F12 (or F8, or something LIKE that), and had gotten into a meat and potatos OS where he added the missing drives. Unfortunetly, I don't remember how Dale fixed my computer very well, so I cannot repeat it to fix my computer. But if this gives any of you people any ideas of how to fix things on my computer, then awsome.

Any more ideas?F8 will get you into Safe Mode, perhaps that was it?
Do the drives show up in your Device Manager?Perhaps I'm interpreting what "Device Manager" is. I think it's "Windows Task Manager", but this manager doesn't show any of the drives. So, maybe your talking about something completely different.

Mind you, I'm not terribly computer savvy.Try Start>Settings>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager.Thank you for helping me out with finding the Device Manager.

Both drives are listed under DVD/CD-Rom Drives. But they both have a yellow exclamation point on them. I don't know what that means, but I thought you should know.

What should I do now?Go back to your Device Manager, double click on your cdrom, select the drivers tab and uninstall the drivers.
OK out then re-boot your computer & Windows will detect the 'new' cdrom & install the drivers for you. Sometimes keeping your fingers crossed will assist this process. Well, I reinstalled the drives, but they still have yellow exclaimation marks on them, they still wont read any CD I put into them, and they're still not accessable in My Computer.

On the bright side: I know what a Device Manager is now. So, I think we're getting closer  .Download, unzip, install & run EVEREST, select Computer Summary and push the Report button.
Save the Report as a text file then copy & paste it here in the forum.
http://www.comcen.com.au/~fed/everest.zip

A question or two, when you tried the cdgone patch were you logged on as Admin and did it ask you to re-boot on completion?

ok. i have win 98 and i was running out of disk space so i add removed programs/files and i think i accidently removed something i shouldnt have. now i can only CHOOSE 16 color display. it looks really crappy and pixelized. before i think i jad 256 colors. what do i need to INSTALL? display driver or something idk. someone please help me out. thanks. You will need to post the make/model of your computer or graphics card.Well in my opinion ur removed your graphics card DRIVERS thats why U can only choose 16 color display.Install again ur graphics drivers and it may be fixed.Hope that helps. Then check ur dictionary for spelling.Well sorry man i was trying to help...Your idea was appropriate. It's the u and ur that got me.  Theres a Tendency on forums like this that people don't like short hand or "txt spk" as there is no need for it. its not a rapidly moving chat room and nor is it a an awkward phone , and my Spelling sucks and i had some Criticism so now i have the Blessing of the IE7 Spell Checker on every post  Very nice and we all appreciate it.  I'm new to this and I'm pretty much computer stupid. I'm having the same problem. I can't figure out how to load my video driver. Its a 3dfx voodoo3. I downloaded the driver from gateway but its not installing. Running windows98.  Is it a Gateway card? Drivers are hard to find. If it is not, you may want to check www.driverguide.com Registration is free.

You may want to run Everest Home to get the EXACT model of the card for driver hunting.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

How to load depends on what the files are in the downloaded .zip FILE. Unzip them and let us know. You need to uninstall the urrent drivers first and reboot the machine before installing.
Thank you so much. I've got it all straightened. All I had to do was remove the generic driver and it recognized the correct one. I appreciate th help!Glad you are all fixed up.

Solve : "Serial" device has ! mark (and some other probs)?

Answer»

Hi,

First off... the problem is that i want to use the infrared on my laptop and it doesn't seem to work... it was working well back then, when all of a sudden it doesn't work. I think there is a problem with "Wireless LINK" in my control panel, nothing happens when i click on it. But in the device manager I get no indication of any problems with infrared.

I also noticed that in the device manager, "SERIAL" located under Non-plug-and-play drivers, has a yellow ! mark. Inside Propeties it says
This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24). It has a file located in /system32/drivers/serial.sys

Next, under Ports (COM and LPT), i only see Printer Port (LPT1).

I get the feeling that these are all related as to why my infrared on laptop is not working... because i read somewhere that infrared need a port or something.... i don't know...

Any help is greatly appreciated!
(I really hope to get infrared working so that i can transfer files between laptop and handphone)

P.S. I think you might want me to print my device manger information to a file... but I don't know how. Whenever i print it asks me to name the file... but didn't ask me where to save the file. In the end - no file created.

Thanks in advance!
Anticipating your help =D

What processor?

When exactly did it stop working and what were you doing at the time?Windows XP Home. Service Pack 2.

Acer Travelmate 290...

AcerSystem
     Intel (R) Pentium (R) M processor 1500 MHz

Not sure, I don't remember doing anything out of the ordinary. The last time that i used infared was more than a few months back... recently, (last 2 weeks or so) i tried to use infrared and realised that it doesn't work.I Recommend you Download and REINSTALL the New Drivers

http://www.acersupport.com/notebook/html/tm290_dl.htmlokay. I will try that and tell you how it goes.

ERM... i don't reinstall the "802.11 Wireless Driver" can? because I updated the driver to the latest version as stated on the Intel ProSET driver website.... reason for updating was because i was experiencing very frequent wireless connection drops... now after updating it is all good.

oh... erm... I think the links on the ACER website are not working anymore. All of them.

for the infrared, i did try searching elsewhere on the internet for updating the drivers. I updated, but still doesn't seem to do any good. I have since reverted back to the old/default driver for infrared... just to be safe. You could Try Driver Guide

Solve : Sound MAX on board driver help??

Answer»

I just re installed Windows XP home edition and i relised i have to install all the drivers again, But my sound card driver dosent work.

I have a SoundMAX on board sound card which came with my computer and was working before i reinstalled windows.

I've got EVERY single soundMAX driver i can find but none of them work! They either come up with "Driver not found! Reboot your system and try the setup again" or if not that it will come up with "The HDA Audio bus driver is required and not found"...

I Have googled this thing for days and i cant find an answer

Does anyone have any ideas?

What is your computer and/or motherboard make and model? As this is an onboard chip, frequently found in Dell, IBM and Compaq, that will provide the answer. Some generic SoundMax driver is not likely to ever work.

You probably need more drivers than the sound anyway.  im not sure what my computer/ mother board infomation is?? how do i find out?Download and run Everest Home, press the buton for Report and save it. Post the file it creates on your next visit here.

Solve : Error:'The Data is invalid' when installing driver?

Answer»

So I'm trying to install a the drivers for my Sony Eyetoy, and I get a CRC. So I run a disk check and fix MANY errors on my HDD. I now can open many files that I thought where corrupt and unuseable! Happy DAYS! Or were they..Now when I'm installing drivers, instead of getting a CRC, I get "The Data is invaild". I've tried using many drivers from DIFFERENT sites, but nothing works. I still get the same error. I would try to install drivers for something other than an Eyetoy, but I don't have anything to install.. -_-...So..any help would be nice, thanks.

THIS is where I get my drivers for the Eyetoy.

Attached is a picture of the error.Your best best would be to get the driver from the Logitech site.  Have you checked there or e-mailed their support address? Is it a Logitech or is it a Sony?NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!NO!!

Solve : Marvell Miniport Driver??

Answer»

I'm trying to decide which driver to use for my NIC card. I have a built in MARVELL Yukon Card on Windows XPx64 and there are a COUPLE of drivers available on Marvell's site. One is the v8.56.1.3 Driver and the other is the v8.56.3.3 Miniport Driver. I'm more inclined to use the bigger number, but I'm not sure if I should use the miniport... what is miniport and should i use it or the other or both? thanks. That site doesn't do the best job of clearly identifying which product their drivers go with, in my OPINION.  My guess is this might be what you NEED: Windows 64-bit Win XP & Server 2003 Driver  Windows XP x86 64-bit, Windows 2003 Server x86 64-bit   7/13/06  8.56.4.3

Solve : Mouse stops working while playing Starcraft?

Answer»

Last night my world came to a crashing halt....

During one of my Starcraft benders, I noticed that the mouse pointer was jumping and freezing momentarily, and it always came back to a ready state, but on one occasion, it just froze completely.  After three reboots, my mouse began operating again, and I was able to reload the game.  After less than five minutes, the mouse stopped working again, and froze my pc cold. (Not quite a BSOD, but close enough).  Naturally, I got upset! I have uninstalled and reinstalled my drivers, (Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical, Intellipoint 4.0) and that did not solve the problem.  I have run my anti-virus software (to make sure I dont have a hidden problem) and nothing, SpyBot, and repaired my REGISTRY... All to no effect...  This is a PERPLEXING problem, and I would appreciate any help!

Pentium 3 1.4GhZ
256 MB RAM
Onboard 32 MB Ram NVIDIA 3200 Video Card
Onboard Sound Card
(hey dont blame me, its a DELL!)

This is my first post, so plz hang in there with me if all of the needed info is not there.....Try a different mouse, PS2 is best.I have tried both the USB/Ps2 ports for the wheel mouse, have also used a MS Wireless Web Mouse, and Logitech 5 button mouse.. all with no availDoes the problem only occur with this game?As it just started happening last night, I am going to say "yes".. I also play Knight Online, and am afraid to try and launch it lest this mouse prob leaves me hanging... Quote

I have tried both the USB/Ps2 ports for the wheel mouse
Was this using the same mouse in different ports by using an adaptor?
Quote
have also used a MS Wireless Web Mouse, and Logitech 5 button mouse.. all with no avail
Did these result in exactly the same problem?yes.. I tried the MS Optical mouse in both USB and Ps2 using the supplied adapter, and the Wheel Web mouse and Logitech mouse were both strictly USB.

Yes, the same problem occured with all of the hardware.. pointer freezes in the game, and I must ALT+F4 to exit it, and then the mouse pointer is frozen on my desktop, exact center. So you haven't really tried an alternative PS2 mouse yet?
Are the USB ones jumping around or just freezing? No that is true, I havent tried a different Ps2 mouse, only because I dont have a dedicated one.. so I cant TEST the adapter...

And the USB mice dont jump.. they just freeze in-game... although I did just experience a jump while running IE..See if you can borrow a working PS2 mouse to try. Thanks Fed.. Will let you KNOW how that turns out
Since last post:

Have tried alternate mouse - GENERIC Ps2 - no difference

Have now experienced problems in Knight Online, IE and other programs where mouse freezes and whole computer stops responding.. always results in numerous reboots...

Have updated Intellipoint software to v5.5, no improvements..

also have noticed a pause from BIOS screen to welcome screen (WINXP Home), and I am not able to locate autoexec.bat or config.sys file to see if there are any changes..

Any ideas?
What operating system are you running?
Does it happen in safe mode?
Does it happen while you are NOT connected to the internet?

Now that we are fairly sure there is nothing wrong with your mouse I'm thinking you may have a trojan.I too have this problem. I have tried  usb, and ps2 mice. After 2 to 3 reboots, It works. I am running Windows XP Home. all updates and patches installed. The mouse works, but the image of the pointer freezes. :-?tysdad,

This is referred to as "thread hijacking" as even though the problems seem the same the causes can be different as well as the solutions. We do not penalize for first time offenses.

Have you tried the aboe steps?
