i tried downloading some 3dfx files from the site but nothing worked, can someone give me help?
thanks in advanceohh ho ho i was replacing my opengl32.dll with a few that i downloaded from the net thinking i was smart, and it turns out i got 1 that must not be very compatible because even games such as diablo2 wont run, please help asap, because i seem to be damaging my computer by trying to help it  Can you use system restore to a date before you got adventurous and hosed your system?well that might have been a good way to get back to point A, but im looking in my system restore file now and it says "there are currently no restore points available". and wont let me change the month. any suggestions?ok i was able to get an opengl32.dll that seems to put me back where i was in the first place so thats a good thing i think. i got 3dfx voodoo 2 or 3 and windows xp, i once fixed this problem by replacing some dlls but that was long ago and cant remember which ones other then opengl32.dll if any i replaced. i cant find the site that told me how to fix it either. this is really a last resort for me so help is much appreciated, thanks again.Update your video drivers.arg, the reason i am posting for help is because i am *stupid*. i tried to update my video driver and i ended up almost killing it. they give me thousands of files and i dont know the right one to choose. To INSTALL the new drivers we must first find out what video card you have.
Download & run Everest, it will tell you & then you can tell us.
http://www.comcen.com.au/~fed/everest.zipWithout the correct drivers how would you even expect it to work correctly? Why should it? How could it?  alright i hope this is what you guys are looking for. i can post other INFO if you need it, just ask.Uninstall the present drivers and use this one:

https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=293sorry, but how do i un-install my current drivers? Is it in Add and Remove Programs in Control Panel? If not, just delete it in Device Manager. Use Safe Mode if necessary.

Solve : How do i uninstall my Sound Driver????

Answer»

heres what happened, i wanted to use my mic for BF2. i have a surround sound card card plugged into a PCI slot that does not have a mic input. i also have onboard surround sound that DOES have a mic input. i found out later i cannot use the PCI sound card (for my speakers) in COMBINATION with the onboard mic-input. ur default sound card HAS to have a mic-input on it.

So the drivers i installed for my onboard soundcard are not being used. i disabled the driver in my system setup, and i would like to know how i could delete this driver off my computer. (it has 2 runnning procesess linked with the driver hogging a bit of RAM.)Does it show in msconfig?the running procesess yes, they are as follows...

RTHDCPL.EXE and
ALCMTR.EXECan you just uncheck them?i could, but that would not delete them from my comp correct?

from what ur saying, drivers (after being installed) are permentent and can NOT be deleted??Drivers can sometimes be deleted in Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. YOu can also delete them in device manager. If they are needed, they will be reloaded when Windows reboots. (They won't be if they are for an itemn disable in the BIOS). Using msconfig creates a folder when you reboot the machine called Deleted Startup Items which you can store where you want. You can also reload them through msconfig later. No danger at all. The actual files would still be present on the hard drive in any case EXCEPT trhe Add and Remove Program option.i uninstalled it via add/remove programs. last time i tryed to do that ,however, there was some sort of error. i dont know why it let me uninstall now. i have to restart my comp to complete the uninstallation. i hope my comp still works...well my comp still works, however windows said "found new hardware" when the comp was done booting up. i guess the driver i installed from the ASUS cd is installed somewhere else on my comp...

also, those 2 procesess have been removed from my task manager.

*EDIT*

im guessing that this is the driver i got from the ASUS CD, "High Definition Audio Driver Package KB888111"

*ANOTHER EDIT*

i CLICK "remove" for the driver mentioned above, and it SAYS " setup has found these programs on ur computer --deusEx: invisible war way not work properly if this is removed, do u want to continue?"

deusEx is NOT the only game on my comp. why would it just select it?OK , if you want the Sound card to not Get installed , you need to turn it off in the Bios like GX1_man said...

But you can use it for input in BF2 if you really want to, it will be a Drag on you system tho, but as long as its on in the Bios it will be a Drag on you system any way

if you want to turn it Off, If you have an "Award" Bios (the one IVE had on my last 3 computers)

just hit Del to enter Bios
Find Integrated peripherals
Find On Board Sound RealTeck AC97 (Mostlikley...)
Change Enabled to Disabled
Hit F10, Press Y , and hit enter

If you want to use the Second sound Card as an input Device, Go to Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices , open the Recording Tab , and Change the Input Device to The Onboard Sound Card. (i have done this once Before it did work , but using 2 sound cards can Kill your system)ah thank u, i will try that.

Solve : Integration of star TSP 700 printer?

Answer»

Hi
I am using STAR TSP 700 PRINTER i want to integrate it with apg cash drawer.
doses star printers provide any drivers for this.
Thanks
Pankaj SharmaThis is pretty esoteric stuff. I don't know that anyone here has any experience with that KIND of equipment, but good luck!  Is this like a Till Scan that you want to set up?

I'm Thinking you mean a Cash register when you SAY Cash draw.

In my Experience there are Serial ASCII Interceptors for most Tills that let you TAKE the text Printed to the Recite to an External source, some Tills even have com ports Built in so no need for extra hard ware. .. the out put is generally in a pretty raw Serial ASCII streem... you would have to contact the manufacturer to find out the Format of the Text in order to figure it out....

Ive only done this With Camera's a CCTV DVR's That all tend to have the Software for this built in to the hardware... but its a simple enough Driver and id say you could get it by talking to the Right People... ill done some more Research if this is what you want

Solve : Re: Monitor on power save help me please!?

Answer»

I don't understand, exactly how did you reconnect the PC, where did you plug in the monitor?

Maybe you have onboard graphics and a graphics card as well. So, maybe the monitor is plugged in vertically not to far from where your KEYBOARD and mouse goes in. PULL out the cable and plug it in a bit lower HORIZONTALLY, assuming you have a graphics card installed and you have an TOWER type of box.

More details would be nice.

Solve : CHANGE IN SCREEN RESOLUTION?

Answer»

I CHANGED the resolution on one of my Windows XP Home edition computers. Upon starting up the Windows XP screen comes up and starts to load.  Then the screen goes black and I get a ["Out of Timing V 60Hz H 75.0 KHZ" message.  I cannot get anything else to come up.  HELP!Boot into SAFE mode (F8 at startup before the Windows logo) and change it back. If for some reason you can't do this, use SYSTEM Restore to get it back to how it was yesterday (or before this event). It sounds like you selected a video setting that is outside the capable range of your monitor.

Solve : Fatal Exception error identified!?

Answer»

The Fatal Exception error I mlentioned on my EARLIER post means USB COMPATIBILITY problem which I solved my updating the USB files from Microsoft KB.  Thanks to all who tried to help me.Do you not KNOW how to REPLY in the forum?  Why did you not post this in your original topic, where it belongs?

Solve : Cant find updates?

Answer»

i cant find the updates for my video card its a RADEON 9250//please HELP!https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27

They use UNIFIED drivers. The LATEST posted should do fine, but what problems are you having that you need to UPDATE?

Be sure and uninstall the old drivers first!

760.

Solve : What does this Fatal Exception error mean??

Answer»

My PC uses Windows 98SE with built--in USB 1 and PCI USB 2 controller.
After installing the driver of the Lexar Multi Card READER, I inserted the card reader into the USB2 port, the Device Manager failed to install the new device giving me the Blue Screen with the following message:

A Fatal Exception 0E has occurred at 0028 C153A81E in VXD APIX (01)+0000317E.

I tried plugging into USB1, same thing happened.
Technical support of Lexar could not help.  Could anyone out there help?Did this ever work correctly? If so what has changed? Are you using the correct driver for Win98?If i were to Express your problem into one Syllable it would be "Boop!"

as for fixing it , i would Recommend a Reinstall of all related Drivers, i would uninstall the new ones you got and go back to the old ones that worked Quote

This driver is something neww for my computer, it has never worked before.  It worked OK on another computer with the same OS.

I tried quite a few things without success, such as uninstalling and reinstalling a few times, perforing Clean Boot, cleaning Registry, scanning for spyware(s) sand virous check.

What else can I do?  Have I overlooked the conflicting driver(s)?

What kind of add on USB 2 card is this? Has it ever worked correctly? What about some specifics on the machine? Are there newer drivers at the Lexar site? What is the specific model and number of the Lexar drive?

I would first totally REMOVE the USB card from the machine and remove all drivers for it and reboot. Then I would install the latest drivers for this Lexar drive from the web site. Then I would attempt to use it in the USB 1.1 port. (Hopefully it is a 1.1 and not a 1.0, but I don't KNOW that.

Post back what happens.
  Quote
It is a PCI USB2 controller card.  It works quite well with other USB devices such as JumpDrive and iPod.
It is the last thing I would do to remove this card.  As the Lexar technical support said that this PCI USB2 controller cannot be an issue.  If anything at all, it would be the drivers that cause the conflict.  The thing is how to remove the conflicting drivers without removing the card?

The situation is a little complicated. If you can remove some of the variables (like that card and it's drivers) then at least you would be able to problem solve with less possibilities for the conflict, then if working, add one thing back in until the problem resurfaces. On the other hand, if there own people couldn't sort it out....

What about the other questions I asked?

Solve : Driver(s) Removal?

Answer»

I have to uninstall some drivers which were previously installed.  Will somebody please help?Use your Device Manager to remove them. Quote

I tried this before I posted my original message; all I could find in the Device Manager were names of DEVICES not DRIVERS!
Perhaps I made a mistake, so please instruct me in details.  Thanks.  Oh yes, before I forgot:  My machine USES Windows 98SE.
Stick to the forum, that way many people can help you. What drivers are you tryng to remove & why?u nice guy federal. where u LEARN so much?? can u TEACH me?? why asking keep remove all posting??Asking was sending me PM's as well. I posted them here and then he REMOVED the questions and the responses. I guess he doesn't want help.

Solve : Reinstall OS??

Answer»

My computer stopped recognizing my cd and dvd.  They're listed in the Device Manager with yellow !  and it started happening when I was installing a Norton upgrade - it said it would delete Norton and reinstall whatever.  My computer crashed, I uninstalled and reinstalled Norton and then noticed the absence of the drives.  I TRIED uninstalling them and restarting the computer, the drives are not reinstalled, or rather, they're reinstalled but still don't run.  I called Norton, they said Norton doesn't mess with the drives (yeah, programs never run wild...)and they hung up on me.  I called Dell and they told me to reinstall windows because the drives are corrupted, same advice from TEAC.  I'm willing to try something else before taking this drastic step - I hate reinstalling everything.  Any thoughts?  I'm attaching my Hijack This file.  Thanks!

What if you uninstall Norton, and then delete the drives in Device manager and reboot?

I tried that, the first thing.  I just think it strange that both drives stopped working at the same time.  That's why I thought Norton did something to it.  It looks LIKE I have no other options.  I'll do it next week when I have time.  I just hate spending 5 hours doing that stuff.  Good thing I have a Maxtor to back up my stuff so it'll be easier to reinstall everything.  I'll check here one more time before I do it, just in case someone has an idea.  Thanks!A good imaging program can change that from 5 hours to 10 minutes! Solve : A:is not accessible?

Answer»

I have a Dell 4300 (2002) with std equipment 1.70 GHz, 256MB,  Windows XP, DVD-RW drive.
My problem is the A drive isn't working anymore.
I get the following error MSG anytime I try to use it.

A: is not accessible
the floppy disk controller reported an error that is not recognized by the floppy disk driver.

I contacted Dell and they gave me a ten step troubleshooting process that didn't work. I'm thinking that maybe I just need a new drive?

Thanks for any help you can GIVE me.  [smiley=kiss.gif]Were you monkeying inside the case PRIOR to this at all? If not, then open it and reseat the power and data cable on the floppy and the floppy connector on the motherboard (the other end of the small data cable).

Is the floppy seen in the BIOS? If so, then the floppy is probably history. Has it had a lot of use? A replacement seems like a good plan if the above doesn't work.

You could also try deleting the floppy drive from Device Manager and rebooting. Sometimes you get lucky.  Thanks for all of the advice.  The drive was listed in my BIOS and none of the steps worked.
A had added a new DVD-RW drive about a MONTH before this stopped working.

Oh well, looks like I'll be buying a new drive.

Thanks again for your help.No problem. I hope that fixes you up. LET us know.  I wanted to let you know that I bought a new drive, installed it and it's working fine now.
Thanks again for your assistance.
This is where I'll come first for help from now on!
Thanks for posting back. And we'll leave the light on.

What about some specs on the machine? Has it always been this way? WHen did it start? Have you updated any DRIVERS lately? Any problems in Device Manager? Thanks for your interest.  This is a 2002 German made Medion PC, Model AWRDACPI, x86 Family 15 Model 2, with 2673 Mhz processor.  It has Phoenix Technologies bios, version 2.3.

The PROBLEM started about 2 months ago, and has steadily GOTTEN worse.  I have not updated any drivers lately, and no problem is indicated in Device Manager.

zolasueHave you or can you locate the drivers on their website and update them?Yesterday, I located a Medion website in the UK from which I downloaded and installed all available updated drivers for my
model computer.  Since then, I have had no more crashes, so am hopeful the problem is solved.

Thanks for your input.

ZolasueI'm glad that fixed you up. Be SURE and burn all of those drivers to a CD if you ever need to reinstall.

Solve : Help on Backup Drive (D:)?

Answer»

:-?  I have a laptop and i have this defragmenting program kalled diskeeper. i was defragmenting my DRIVE c but never my drive d. When i TRIED to defragment it.... it didnt help at all and it told me that i have 6% of free space left on this drive. I want to know what programs arent really important so i can delete them or find a way to get more free space so i can defragment my drive. Thanksz  You could use POWER Defragmenter to DEFRAG that drive. http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/Power-Defragmenter.shtml

I works really fast, but it doesn't rearrange your files by DATE or access or anything. It just defrags your drive.

Maybe you could give a list of what data you have on that drive so someone could help you to delete some of it.

Solve : Hard Drive showing artificially full?

Answer»

Hello
I have been all over the net looking for the solution to this problem.  I have a friend with a 20 GB HD and he has about 3-4 gigs used.  In properties it shows he has only about 800 MB free space.  We have looked and deleted and scanned and searched for a couple weeks.  Is there anyone out there who has had this problem and what did you do?
System:  WIN XP Pro
512 MB
He just reinstalled windows a week ago... and it crashed once during install and so he installed it to a new folder called windows2.  This may or may not be related to the original problem... but we would love to get rid of any of those original windows FILES.  They DO show up when we use spacemonger, but i guess we are not quite sure if its safe to just delete the "windows" folder. (realizing we THINK we installed the current one to windows2.. it does show up as well)

Thanks gofergal.... Well , if it was my machine , I would be doing a format and a clean install ....... That will correct the problem .
Remember to save anything that is wanted.

dl65  Agreed. A FRESH install can eliminate other problems down the road as well. What spyware/virus protection is in place also?same, but b4 formatting, try defraging the hard drive.. if it doesnt work, backup your files and format, than install a proper window Well, this is an old and abandoned post, but defragging is not relevant if you are going to format the drive and start over.

Padre, MAYBE you could find a more current post to COMMENT on?

Ok, i have quite and old computer here are the specs.

System:
 Microsoft Windows XP
 Proffesional
 Version 2002
 Service Pack 2

Computer:
 Intel Pentium 3 processor
 704MHz, 128MB of RAM

I'm not sure what else details about my computer you will need, anyway i am trying to reset (reboot) my computer, you know by using a "Windows Xp disk" to unistall everything, do you understand me? because i don't know much about  computers.
I have never had problems at all with my computer, and every few months i delete everything and start again...(if you understand me)

Thanks for the help so far, sorry i am not to clever at this..please ask me for more if you need it to help me

greekos.....  Ok , first let me say that your pc will handle XP , however , you should really add more ram ........ It will run on 128mgs, but very slowly .......
256 is the minimum that you should have...... 384 or 512 would be better .

Now assuming that you have an original win XP cd with S2 and a APPROPRIATE product serial key   ( 25 character alpha numberic code ) .   Simply go into the bios and set the boot sequence to first boot cd-rom ....save the change and exit . Put the win xp cd in the cd rom and start up the machine ........ then simply follow the instructions on the screen.

Once you have xp installed and before going online , install your anti virus ....then go online and visit the MS update site and get all available updates .   Oh, yes , don't forget to do ACTIVATE windows XP .......

Hope this helps .

dl65  Thank you very much for the help dl65, but when i follow your instructions, it says "failed" when trying to read the XP disk.
Have you any more help?  :-?
Thank you once againgreekos .......Very odd....... Let me ask you something ....... Was this pc working fine before this issue ...or have you just built it or rebuilt it ?
when I reread your posts , I get the impression your not telling us the whole story ....... If I have reached the wrong conclusiopn , please let me know .

dl65  Hi dl65

This is greekos brother.

To answer your QUESTION - we're not entirely sure on what may of affected the drive and other errors we seem to be getting whilst on the computer. However, we did get an unsual error message when logging onto to the normal user which sort of triggered all the problems off after we had saw that.

We are recieving  the following error when logging onto my user at this home pc.

"Limited Virtual Memory - Your system has no paging file or the paging file is too small.
To fix this problem, go to system in control panel, click the advanced tab and under performance, click settings on the advanced tab, click change. Click 'custom size' and then type an initial or maximum paging file size."

Now, doing as the message says brings us to the following shown in the screenshots;

Now, i know the KNOWN rule is to set both the Initial and Maximum sizes to 1.5 times the amount of RAM you have installed in your system. However, i did this and there was no change.

So then i changed the setting to "system managed size" and yet again nothing happened.

So i decided to leave the error message alone for the time being however it had occured to me
that something was wrong and that ALOT of things had now stopped working and failied to operate.
When inserting cd's into my drive, they would not load or get reconigsed. My sound had stopped
altogther, not playing any audio file whatsoever. We kept getting constant error messages, that
meant nothing to us really which would cause either the browser, msn messenger or the whole
computer to shut down.

Now it has come to my knowledge that the error message above must be the cause of all this as
before, none of this was happening whilst we didnt see that error message.

IF you could help us on the SITUATION, i would be very grateful now that you know a little more.
If you need more info, please ask specifically.

Thanks in advance,greekos....... So really all these issues appeared after changes were made to the paging file system ......
How long has it been since windows xp was installed on this machine , and do you have SP2 installed as well as the available critical updates ?

Now lets try something ........ lets clear the paging file system .....
To clear the Windows paging file (Pagefile.sys) during the shutdown process and prevent any unsecured data from being contained after the shutdown process is complete. Some third-party programs can temporarily store unencrypted (plain-text) passwords or other sensitive information in memory.

Open Control Panel
Select Administrative Tools
Select Local Security Policy
Select Local Policies
Click on Security Options
In the right hand menu, right click on Shutdown: Clear Virtual Memory Pagefile
Select Enable
Reboot

let us know what effect this has and the answers to to other questions .

dl65
To answer your question, we have had windows xp for about 2-3 years.
About  SP2, i dont know what this im sorry to say lol so i wouldn't know if we had it installed or not..

Anyway, i followed the instructions you gave me however they didnt work to good.
This is what i got..

I dont know if they help but thats what i got, im guessing thats not meant to happen
greekos....
So what happened when you did this ........

Click on Security Options
In the right hand menu, right click on Shutdown: Clear Virtual Memory Pagefile  Select Enable
Reboot

dl65
I enabled it and after i re booted the error message still came up..

Solve : installing realtek drivers?

Answer»

I have downloaded some drivers for my ETHERNET card card but there are only three .sys files and no executables. How do I install these files?I doubt that is all you need, but go to Control Panel/System/Device Manager and HIGHLIGHT the NETWORK card and choose properties. There is a tab to reinstall drivers. Just point to the location where these files are and tell US what happens.

Solve : CD ROM will work if disk is autorun but..........?

Answer»

If I put in any other disk that is not an AUTO run it tells me to "please insert disk".  I am running a 2000 machine and the rom is an OLDER rom but it worked fine before I rebuilt this machine.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

TNXIt is jumpered correctly and seen correctly in the BIOS?

No CD will work - commercial, home made or othjerwise unless autorun/

How old is it? Do you have another drive you could slip in there to test with, and test this drive on another machine?

What spyware/virus protection is being used regularly? The  jumpers are good it is the exact same hardware config I had on it for a couple of YEARS.  I do have SPYBOT and adaware running all the time.  I just reloaded the OS a couple of days ago (using the cd rom).  I was able to load the motherboard drivers I had on disk and all the agp/pci devices.  I poped in the midows office cd and it starts.  I even put in other cds with autorun and it still can't  see any other cd.  I'll put in a drive from one of my other machines and try that................it's about 4 years old but was hoping to save it.Sometimes the optics and other functtions go long before the mechanics  (drive still opens, etc.). Is it recognized in device manager? No exclamation marks by the CDROM? What make/model/speed?

Solve : Lost Sound in Win98SE.?

Answer»

I've lost all sound and when I clicked on Volume CONTROL at Accessories>Entertainment>, nothing appeared.    I have also lost the Sound icon from my tray.    I opened the DirectX Diagnostic Tool and when I ran the Sound 1,2 and 3 tests they all reported:--" Failure --- (Direct Sound Create) HR Result =0x88780078 (No Driver)      I then downloaded Asrocks C-Media 2042(AC97) Audio Device and the installation apparently went smoothly but I still had no sound and when I ran the Diagnostic sound tests again, they still reported (No Driver)!!      Where do I go from here, please.?  Cheers, Alpha.    (Win98SE/AOL9.0/Broadband Silver)      :-?Delete all sound DRIVERS in Control Panel/System and reboot. What happens now?

Is this driver for Win98SE? Newer boards are dropping support for anything less than 2000.Before you delete any drivers, go into device manager and update driver. Thanks GX1-Man and 2k-Dummy for your responses.     Taking the second first, I have no "Update Driver" in my Win98SE Device Manager.     Under Sound,Video and Game Controllers, an entry confirms the installation of the AC97 Driver and there is also an entry-"Unknown Device"- which has a yellow 0 beside it.       It may not be relevant, but a PCI Universal Serial Bus entry has a yellow ? and an O beside it.     To answer GX1-Man, I was advised to get the AC97 by someone who builds computers and, although I'm not positive about it, I think it is the same as the driver I had originally.
Could you please explain your suggestion to delete all sound drivers, which sounds rather a  drastic "solution" to me ?   (But what do I know.!!)                   Cheers,      Alpha.Assuming you had the correct sound driver (and you may have, IF it used to work) but Windows cannot use it, deleting the drivers and then rebooting will usually allow Windows to sort it out and reload the correct one. If the correct one was never there, then all bets are off.

What is your motherboard make and model, as it sounds like you have onboard sound, rather than an add-in card? If you don't know, download Everest to confirm:

Belarc says it's ASRock K7541GX and Everest says it's American Megatrends ASRock K7541GX 1.0     Everest provides a lot of information under Audio and Sound.    Do you need any of that, please.?

I did have the C-Media 3D Audio icon in my tray when my sound was OK and it is back there now, since I did the driver reinstall.     I am quite clueless about all things Audio and it occurs to me to ask if there are any configuration aspects which need attention before it will work.?                                                 Cheers,    Alpha.

Thanks.   Please see my reply to GX1_Man      Cheers,  Alpha. Quote
It's a K7S41GX and all the relevant drivers can be found here. The audio package supports Win98.

Thanks for the link, Backdated.   I've installed the appropriate UDA038 driver and I think we're making some progress.!!        The "No Driver" messages at the DirectX Diagnostic Tool's, Sounds 1,2 and 3 tabs and the Music tab have now disappeared and been replaced by the following messages respectively.     I'm hoping that the words I've underlined will give a clue to what I should do next.!!       I found quite a lot about this issue on the net (eg.---

1)    Halt any processes that may be using any soundcard resources whatsoever. 2)    Open Device Manager, select the card, right click and uninstall it.
3)      Run the Add New Hardware wizard and point it at your new drivers.

Thanks for all your guidance.      I've got hung-up on the last fence. !!     When I get the "---list of all the drivers---" I presume I have to highlight the appropriate item before clicking on Next>Have Disk and I'm not 100% sure which it is.   Is it "Sound,Video and Game Controllers" because I'm looking for the word "Drivers",!! ?    Also, what do I put into Find Files to locate the new Drivers please.?     I've had a browse but haven't found them so far.        Regards,   Alpha.Hi.    I've been trying to contact Backdated for four weeks by Posting,Private Message and Email without response.     Can someone tell me if there is a problem please.?         Regards,     Alpha.       :-?Backdated is gone, but lets see if we can resolve the issue. Yes, choose sound video and game controler, right click and choose properties, then choose update driver. When it asks the location of the driver choose the folder where the correct sound driver is located. It will do the rest and then you should rebooot and experience sound!   Quote

Thanks for picking up this thread GX1_Man.    Problem.!!    When I've highlighted Sound,Video and Game Controllers, right clicking has no result.    Properties/Update Driver doesn't appear.      If I click Next I get Add New Hardware Wizard, which has two sub-headings, Manufacturer and Model.    Is this variation related to my Win98SE,I wonder.?                        Regards,  Alpha. On the right side there should be "Have Disk" Just point it to where the file has been downloaded and extracted.

Solve : Can't get sound?

Answer»

I am using an Insignia model: D400 series: 400 that I just got from a friend. I had to format and reload Windows XP and now I can't find any controls or drivers for the sound. How WOULD I go about it. Thanks.Did you use a complete version of XP?You need to identify the sound device and install the drivers.

Download Everest and see what sound chip is involved:

http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181Ok I downloaded Everest and I lookedAudio in the multimedia and all it said was: Windows audio and PCI/PnP audio... I opened the windows audio and it says I have no media device and the other shows nothing at all It would appear that there is no sound card in there. Did it used to have sound? If so, open the case and read what is on the sound card. With no more info on the machine, we would just be guessing to go further with this.

We'll wait to hear from you.  The computer did play souns before I formated it and the only info I can get  on it is from Belarc and this is what it posted:

Solve : Moniter problems?

Answer»

ok.. so.. I was trying to fix a acreen problem with one of my games and I shut off the adapter to my moniter... now.. it will not show me my screen anymore yet I can hear that the computer is running normally... how can I get the screen back onSee whether you can start in Safe Mode and then reset your display adapter: How to Start Windows in Safe ModeI tried that and that doesn't work ethier.. The screen just goes BLANK after windows loads... but I can hear EVERYTHING working. I tried rebooting it and that doesn't work ethier.I think some clarification is needed here; I should have recognized that before my previous post.  Exactly how did you "shut off the adapter to my moniter"?ok I went into display properties, I went to the settings tab and clicked the advanced button. That brings up another window where I went to the adaptor tab. Windows help told me to go to the driver tab in that window and select update driver, but no such option was availble. So instead I went back to the adaptor tab and disabled the adaptor. It then told me to restart my computer and when I did the moniter started going blank.  Well, that all sounds odd.  On Win XP computer, I SIMPLY don't have the option to DISABLE the monitor at the Adapter screen.  And, that makes sense.  Why would Windows allow you to disable a device that is required to use your computer?

Do you have a video card installed or are you using onboard video?  If you're using a video card, does your computer have onboard video capability?  Do you have any old or extra video card that is not being used?  Is your video card AGP or PCI Express?

ok so I use a video card and yes it does have onboard video capibilility, and it is a PCI card and no I don't have any extra video cards laying around. Oh and yes my computer runs windows xpDid you originally use the onboard video?  Is so, did you have to access your BIOS screen and change a setting to switch from onboard to the video card?  Can you access your BIOS (the CMOS Setup utility) and see your BIOS settings?  Do you see anything on screen when you first turn on the computer?

Have you tried connecting the monitor to the onboard VGA connector and starting the computer?  You do have two connectors on back of your computer, the onboard and the one from your PCI card, right?  Yes I believe I can acesses my BIOS and yes I can see the Windows XP start up window and then when it should go to my DESKTOP it goes blank. And, what about the other questions I asked in my last post?

Solve : hard drive for compact presario?

when my computer starts, it says that there is no access to the hard drive! what could the problem be.What is the exact ERROR message? It could be that the hard drive has died.  More info  will determine that. Can you see the hard drive in the BIOS?  (Usually F10 at startup.)it says "unable to access hard drive" computer sounds like it is HANGING at that step......If you have a computer with a CD burner, I would suggest downloading a Linux LiveCD and booting with that to see if the problem is WINDOWS or the computer. I fear it will be the computer.OK, I WILL TRY THAT, THANKS......AND I WILL GET BACK TO YOU AND LET YOU KNOW THE RESULTS. THIS MORNING, IT MADE IT ALL THE WAY TO THE LOG ON TO WIDOWS PAGE, THEN FROZE UP.

Solve : BJ-10sx problem?

Answer»

I've recently upgraded my COMPUTER but am having trouble getting the PRINTER
to work again.

My BJ-10sx cable goes into my Canon CS-P 3.7 scanner socket and the cable
from the scanner goes into the computer.

I've tried adding the printer driver from Windows 98 under Add Printer and
also downloading drivers from
the net for this printer but whenever I TRY to print, I just get a page of
gobbledegook.

I don't know what I'm doing WRONG - any thoughts?try uninstalling the drivers and then reinstall them. Sometimes this will clear your problemDid this used to work under Win98?I've tried uninstalling and re-installing several times and the same thing just keeps on happening.Old OS? New OS? Same OS? Upgraded computer? New computer? Printer drivers? Scanner drivers?
Original scanner and printer software?
1. As indicated in my original post, this problem occurred after I got my computer upgraded.

2. My understanding is that Windows 98 would have been installed on the upgraded computer - it's not the Windows 98 I was previously using.

3. The original scanner has been reconnected to the upgraded computer and the original disks were used to install the drivers.

4. The BJ-10sx drivers are already on Windows 98, ready to install the drivers. However, when this didn't work I downloaded the drivers from the WEB and tried those as well - same problem occurred.

Solve : How do I transfer photos from old laptop to new?

Answer»

I purchased a new laptop and my cable modem now only identifies my new laptop. However, there are some photos and items on my old laptop which I would like to copy onto my new laptop. I was told that I should purchase a USB Drive and first put it in my old laptop, copy what I want transferred to my new laptop, and then place the USB Drive in my new laptop. Is this correct? And if it is, will I be able to copy items from my old laptop without my old laptop being able to get onto the internet, because my modem will no longer allow my old laptop onto the internet? Thank you.Yes, that will work providing both laptops have functional usb ports.Thank you for your quick reply, but the photos that I want to transfer from my old laptop to my new laptop are in my AOL Download MANAGER on my old laptop, and my modem will no longer allow my old laptop to go onto the internet (AOL) , so how will I be able to access those photos without getting into my AOL Download Manager? This is all "Greek" to me so I appreciate your help.I have no idea what an AOL Download Manager is.
You pictures are either on your old computer or on the internet.Hi again. OK....what I MEAN is, the photos that I want to transfer to my new laptop are currently in my AOL Download Manager on my old laptop, and in the past the only way I was able to view those photos was to first get on the internet via AOL. I don't think there is a way for me to access those photos on my old laptop without first getting onto AOL on my old laptop, which I am no longer able to do via my modem, because my modem is now only recognizing my new laptop. In other words, when I access my AOL screename on my new computer, all of my emails from weeks ago are available to me, but not any of the photos which were in my AOL Download Manager on my old laptop.  My AOL Download Manager on my new laptop is empty. So if I put the USB Drive in my old laptop, I don't know how I will be able to copy those photos from my old laptop without being able to get on AOL via the internet on my old laptop.  Thanks again for your time.I think you will have to wait for someone who knows about your AOL Download Manager.
Alternatively, if you remember the names of any of the files you could do a search on your old computer for them.
Start>Search>For files & folders. (Don't forget the wildcard option *)if u have the pics already downloaded then put them on the flash drive. your pics are SOMEWHERE on UR computer u just have to find themThanks for your help! It worked. I purchased a USB Drive and used the "Search" function and found all of the pictures I wanted to transfer to my new laptop. My problem was that I didn't realize that although these pictures were placed in my AOL Download Manager, anything can be retrieved from the laptop's hard drive throuogh the Search function. Who knew? Thanks again.

hope this helps. :-/How  old  is the drive and has it had a lot of use? Sometimes the optics just give out, long before the mechanics (the drawer will continue to open and close)

You can get a lens cleaning kit (Available at computer stores, Wal-Mart, etc.)  to  see if this problem is a dirty lens. Can it read NO discs - CD or DVD?the computer is only 2 yrs old!when i put the disc in the cd-r drive the light just flashes and nothing happens.i am unable to open anything until i eject the cd.also i just bought the cd lens cleaner.the drive played an original music cd but it just goes dead on me when i want to burn some music to the cd.I think it's time for a new drive if you haven't been monkeying around inside the case. There is a reason the warranties on them are so short (90 days to 1 year at the most!) Luckily they are reasonably inexpensive.

Solve : One Confused Laptop - Need Help Please?

I just bought a 2nd hand laptop running windows xp home. Pentium m 1.7, 1 gig mem, 60 gig hard drive and 128mb graphics. Now the problem is that it will not allow me to play any games that require a little resourses. I tried to play Command and Conquer zero hour and it will not work. I ran a programe from the disk that looks at your system and reports back what it found. Hear is a snippet

Speedstep-type processors run at different speeds according to requirements and whether they're on battery POWER or mains.  This is an energy-saving device for laptops. So what do i do to TURN it off and get this sucker smokin ?Leave it on AC power.  Check out the specific utilities/control panel applets that came with your laptop.  You can probably override it.Nope, Still the same after changing power settings etc to always on. Im at a loss. Here is something that may help. When windows first starts i quickly run the programe above and it gives completley different stats. It comes back saying that all is ok. Then if i leave it for 20 seconds and run it again it sais the above , with the low stats etc. Could it be something in windows that is causing this ?

Solve : Compaq computer??

Answer»

I have a Compaq Presario 5000 and it has a MV540 monitor but my original ME disks are lost to the void. I put Win2k on it but the monitor doent have all the supported resolutions listed on the site. Also it keeps recorrecting its witepoint betewwn a blueish greenish collor and white. Also it came equiped with some kind of modem but Win2k cant detect it any suggestions on where I might find the drivers? (I already checked the Compaq and HP websites and only found sound drivers outdated ones at that.) I dont really care if thier outdated as long as they work. You need to load the correct sound and video drivers:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&tool=softwareCategory&product=92867&os=181

I don't know about the video adapter. Win2000 should have those natively.
If the modem was a Winmodem, it may be lost to you unless 2K has built in capabilities to install Winmodem. The problem is that a Winmodem is a SOFTWARE modem and not a PHYSICAL card. Of course, you could always use an external modem or a PC card modem.-scratches head-
Ok, uhm well. Ok the video card is installed properly(I upgraded it so its no longer factory ISSUE) and it works but my monisotr keeps correcting the white point. Upon recent studies if I hit the side of the monitor then the white point fixes and returnes to normal. But the modem is a PC that came installed in one of the PCI slots(The video is and AGP).Most modems sold TODAY are WInModems and they are PCI card based. (If it cost less than $50 it is most likely a WinModem.)

You can download Everest Home and identify the modem and chipset. Then we can look for the driver.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.htmlSoon as I find time I will. Thanks, btw what version of windows is required to run this software?Any Windows from 95 on.  Excellent... At any rate I had something important to say but forgot.Ok I finnaly got around to downloading and intalling yhat program. It says my modem is a PCtel V.90 56k modem. But does anyone know where to find a driver? You've got to use that google button!

http://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial_s&hl=en&q=pctel+v90+modem+driver&btnG=Google+SearchI thought about LOOKING at driver-guide but I'm always afraid theyre gona give me a virus or something. ThanksDrivers are not  usually where viruses reside.

Solve : graphics programs can't fine TWAIN scanner?

Answer»

I have ULead PhotoExpress v 6, and Photoshop Elements 2.0 on a Windows XP Home computer.  I also have a Mustek Bear Paw 1200F scanner.  The graphics programs recognize that the scanner is there, since the name appears on their source lists, but when you ask to connect to the scanner in the TWAIN mode, the programs freeze.  There is no alternative but to close the program.  I have repeatedly reinstalled the latest versions of the ULead and Mustek software.  At one point, when I tried to get the scanner from the ULead program I was told that I was missing several DLL files.  I downloaded these files from DLL-files, but it did not help.  I got a similar message from Photoshop, but I have been unable to find one of the files they asked for at any of the DLL web sites.  I have had extensive communication with ULead, who have made a number of suggestions, but the problem continues.  Mustek has been less responsive.  I should mention that in Photo Express it is possible to connect to the scanner without showing the TWAIN interface, and that works.  But if you want to be able to work with the scanner you have to check the TWAIN option, and then there is this problem.

Personally, I'm unsure whether the problem is likely to be with the graphics programs, the scanner, or Windows.  Any advice will be appreciated. Can you access the scanner via Mustek's own software?  Because you could then at least scan, save, and open in your favourite graphics package.  It could be that there's a shortcoming with XP that isn't enabling it to mediate the TWAIN communication properly. Thanks for the suggestion, but meanwhile the problem has WORSENED.  Now when I run the scanner from it's own interface it scans, and tells me where it is putting the image, but when I go there the image is not there.  At least this SUGGESTS that all of the problem is with the scanner sofware, since the graphics program was not even involved.Hmm...  Are you certain that your virus/spyware protection is up to date and WORKING?Yes.  I have Zone Alarm antivirus and firewall on all the time, and just made a NEW SpyBot run which found nothing.  I think the MACHINE is pretty clean.  Kinda strange!

How would I go about fixing this and adding 24 colors to our settings?
Thank you all so very much in advance!!!
What is the make and model of the computer? You listed an IBM monitor, but there is a 7 digit number on the machine if that, too, is an IBM, like xxxx-xxx. If it is another manufacturer, what make and model? The motherboard or computer manufacturer should have the best drivers.

You can download and run Everest to get all the INFORMATION you need if it is not readily apparent. Just post back the details.

YEAH it did say 2.4 ghz. is there any way of restoring it back to a 2.4ghz. I.ve tried system restore but still does go back to a 2.4
Have you done any monkeying about in the case? What computer or MOTHERBOARD make/model? Usually the processor is set automatically or with a jumper depending on brand.

Run Everest Home and see what it tells you the processor is.

Solve : Sound card not found *URGENT*?

Answer»

I have a Athon +1700 Socket A L7S7A2 mother board with AMI BIOS.  My house has been recently struck by lightning BUT my computer was unplugged and was largely uneffected.  As soon as I TURNED it on HOWEVER there was no sound, just beeps from the CPU instead.  I thought I could fix the problem by WIPING the harddrive (which I was planning to do before the strom).  When I reinstalled windows, everything worked fine but instead of my computer reconizing that there was a sound card there and all it had to do was FIND a driver, but that didn't happen.  The sound card was never recongnized the computer doesnt think theres one actually there.  This has never happened before, it always shows up on device manager and then it finds a driver for the hardware.  I would apperciate any suggestionsDo your speakers have their own power cord?  Were they plugged into the power outlet during the storm?  If so, I wonder whether your sound card may have been damaged via a charge of electricity passing through the speakers into your sound card.   Do you actually have a sound card or are you using onboard sound?

You said your computer was "largely uneffected"?  Have you noticed any other problems since the electrical storm?the router and montior got fried, but come to think of it they were plugged into a surge portector, plus the mouse got fried as well.  Which is kind of strange.  I believe I have on board sound. Yes the speakers were plugged into the wall, I suppose the card got shocked as well then  :-/Wow, you really got hit!  Are you using that computer now?  Again, does it seem to be running OK except for sound?  I'd say there's a good chance your onboard sound was damaged by the hit.  Might just double check your speaker connections and your sound settings to be sure Mute is not on.  You might also access your BIOS and CONFIRM that onboard sound is not disabled; obviously, it should not be if you've been using onboard sound, but, after such an electrical hit, I think I'd check there, also.

Then, if you still have no sound and your computer appears to be functioning OK otherwise, I suggest you get a sound card and install in a PCI slot.  Here's an inexpensive one: CHAINTECH AV-512 Sound Card - Retail.  I've been using this card in my system for a year or so and have been quite satisfied with it. Quote

struck by lightning BUT my computer was unplugged and was largely uneffected.

This seems to be NOT the case.  Yes the soundcard is intergrated into the motherboard, No the motherboard software did not include a driver for it,  No I don't believe it was partly damaged because then the whole motherboard should be out of commission as well.  I did try the BIOS but audio hardware was already inabled.   :-? Quote
No I don't believe it was partly damaged because then the whole motherboard should be out of commission as well.

Refer to  info on restoring the bios from the Asus support cd .

basically what HAPPENS is i boot up, it shows the motherboard logo, and in the corner it says press DEL to run setup, which just takes it to the BIOS menu. if i dont press delete then it goes to another black screen that says "Scanning IDE Drives" it pauses for a while, then says "No drive attached to the fast track controller, the BIOS is not installed."

tried going to the site to update drivers, but cant find them. the bios updater on the site is no help as well.

I also know the speakers and soundcard work because when it shows the windows xp welcome screen it played for a MOMENT the startup music then its suddenly cut off.

thanks for your help

Solve : pc won't recognize lacie external harddrive?

Answer»

Hey there...
Am having a problem that is driving me insane. Have bought a 40 gb lacie external harddrive and when i plug it into my pc with windows xp it doesn't recognize it.
Have found it in the device manager and updated the DRIVERS
Can find it in the computer management, disk management. Says to be healty., type basic. Doesn't have a DRIVER letter asigned to it, but when i assign one it doesn't remember it next time i plug it in. When i try to format it it says the partition or volume is not enabled and i should restart my computer. After restarting nothing changes though.
Have updated windows. The only update that keeps failing is an optional one for a wireless driver. don't know why this fails, but can't see how this would have to do with my external harddrive.
Have brought the lacie back to the shop, lacie is working fine.. they say i should update windows which i have done.
Have installed the driver from lacie website.
If i go to the safely remove hardware tab it recognizes the lacie, but also shows two question marks saying unknown device on volume manager.

One other weird thing is that when i go to the control panel and dbl click on add hardware i get a message saying that i can only INSTALL one device at a time and that one is underway?

Have had plug and play problems before with other hardware, but usually easily solved through device manager. This time i'm lost...

Hope there is someone there that knows something else i can try.... Please don't tell me i need to reinstall windows, would be such a headache....
Help!!! :-?
You must partition the DRIVE and then format it. That is two separate steps. It sounds like you did not do the first.

Read your manual. If you lost it, here you go:

http://www.lacie.com/support/manuals/The lacie harddrive already showes me two seperate partitions... if i want to make a new one my only OPTION is to delete partition...
This is why i'm under the assumption that it is already partioned, am i right???

Solve : Please help! Do I need a new card or what??

Answer»

Lately I have been trying to download some of the new games off the internet and it seems that my card doesn't support them or maybe I just need a download.  I have a NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000 (DAC Type: Integrated RAMDAC if it's important).  If I do need a download could someone please direct me to what specifically I need to download and if I need a new card could someone recommend one?  Thanks for the help.  It is greatly appreciated!!!I think you need to get a new card, this one is really dated./me is entering cyborg mode

Greetings-primitive-I-am-Dilbert-3000-please-give-name-of-biggest-game-you-play-so-I-can-recommend-a-card...

/me is exiting cyborg mode

I'll need the name of the biggest game you play. I'll recommend a card based on this information, and provide price ranges.WELL, let's see...I would like to be able to download some games such as KalOnline and Rubies of Eventide and also I was LOOKING into buying Guild Wars or World of WarCraft or such.  If you need anymore information that I can get you I would be glad to supply it and once again, thanks.Well, I don't know the exact price, but a video card that can play those isn't going to be expensive; at least, not relatively...

See, my video card was $170 USD. That's a lot of cash for a video card. A video card that can play those well might cost in the neighborhood of 100 USD, maybe a little higher. So save your pennies. But a card like that will play those games with ease. Cards like that usually have either 128 or 256 MB of VideoRAM, and the games you specify require/recommend 64. But i never listen to the recommended; that's enough to play it... OK... but not the way I like it. So, about 100 USD if you're going for superior performance, a bit less if you just want to play it. Which card would you recommend?  Also, is there anywhere i can go or anyway I can learn how to INSTALL a new video card?First you need to see if you need a PCI or AGP card. Please post your computer or motherboard make and model.I'm sorry but I don't know how to check if I need a PCI or AGP card.  Could you please tell me how i find that information? Please post your computer or motherboard make and model.Either way, you should get an Nvidia GeForce, ATI Radeon, or ATI Rage. These are baisically the best cards for gaming as far as I know since they give good performance and pretty much any game in existance will WORK on these cards. If you are going to play older games and not planning to buy many new ones, get a 64 MB. If you play games a lot and want new games get a 128 or a 256 MB. I have a Nvidia Geforce with 128 MB, and probably the games that have the best graphics that I have are Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and NFS Underground 1+2 That's pretty much all that is available in the 128 meg group anyway, but if the machine only has a PCI slot available (and some do) the differences in these interfaces can be substantial.I am not sure how I find the motherboard make and model.  Could you tell me where I get that information?Download Belarc Adviser (free at www.belarc .com), run it and look for info in the right top column.

Here is the info from the Belarc advisor.  I posted a little more than necessary in case anyone wanted any more info.

Solve : Looking for a universal audo driver?

Answer»

Hello,

I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop. I changed the OS to a windows XP with a non-english language. Now, my sound card won't work.

My sound card is Sigmatel 9200. I downloaed the driver but it does not work...

I tried a few other drivers but none work.

Is there a universal audio that would work? I don't need crystal clear sound, just as long some noise comes out...Sigmatel is a CHIP manufacturer & doesn't supply drivers so I don't know where you got drivers with only that information.

Go to your device manager & remove the audio drivers.
Re-boot your computer & see if xp will detect & install new drivers for you.
If that fails, download, unzip, install & run everest to find out what your sound device is.
http://www.comcen.com.au/~fed/everest.zip
Search the internet for the correct drivers obtained by everest, download & install them.

Feel free to ask any questions along the way or if you get into trouble with this.
Come back & tell us what happened, we thrive on feedback here.www.support.dell.com for drivers and their support forum. You will find all answers to this vexing problem there. Thanks,

I got the driver from Dell. It is the correct driver but it doesn't seem to work on my computer. I keep going to add new hardware, windows doesn't automatically find my sound card, so I manually pick "sound and game DEVICES", then it asks me what driver to install, so I direct it to the driver I downloaded, and the driver installs.

However, nothing happens after install. When I try to play music, windows media player tells me I have no audio hardware

I tried one other thing but it also didn't work. I have a 2nd exact laptop with the english win xp from dell and sound works there.  So I went there to control panel and then to sounds and it had "Sigmatel High Definition Audio CODEC", something the other laptop without sound no longer has.  So I clicked on properties of "Sigmatel High Definition Audio CODEC" --> driver --> driver details. Then I had 10 paths to driver files in the windows system32 directory. I copied those files  to the laptop with no sound. But still does not work...

I actually think the problem is that the laptop thinks there is no hardware audio device at all. Perhaps newer windows OS has some files that older version of windows OS doesn't have and the old non-english windows cannot recognize the audio hardware? What to do?

I installed everest and it says my sound card is "Intel 82801GBM ICH7-M - High Definition Audio Controller [A-1] " but I cannot find a driver for that anywhere.here's the full everest report, if anyone could HELP me find what's the problem, I would be very grateful.

http://204.157.37.100/~proxy/Report.htmDell driver installs are very easy and it would be unusual to have to do it the way you described. Did you follow the instructions about RUNNING rather than saving to disk?

The report you submitted is less helpful than if you just posted the Dell Service Tag found on the machine or in the BIOS boot up screen.I followed all the dell intrusctions. I installed many dell drivers before and no problem... only this one... All other drivers work on the laptop, video, nic, etc. all is fine, just the sound.

The service tag is : BWYRR91And when you go to this page and input your service tag and choose Drivers and Downloads did you pick the appropriate language? What language was it?

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen

This is the link for what you need. Is that what you got?

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R114075&SystemID=InspironI6400/E1505&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=8907&devlib=0&typecnt=1&vercnt=1&formatcnt=1&libid=3&fileid=149852Yes, that driver is the one I got. I just tried INSTALLING it again, and it said "This system does not support the driver you are attempting to install"

The OS language is Polish. When I pick my service tag combined with Polish, I get no audio drivers available. That sounds diagnostic to me. How about a post on the Dell forums where someone MAY have had this come up before.

Solve : Portable hard drive problems?

Answer»

I have recently purchased a Hitachi 80 GB portable hard drive to back-up my computer.  I have a Dell 600m inspiron notebook purchased in January of 2004.  It has 512 MB or RAM and a 55 GB capacity.  I am RUNNING Windows XP.
When I connect the Hitachi hard drive to my computer through USB 2.0, I get this message, in white letters, on a blue screen:

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

Plug and play detected an error most likely caused by a faulty driver.

If this is the first time you've seen this screen, restart your computer.  If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, diasble or remove any newly installed hardware or software.  Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.  If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode"

When I first bought the portable hard drive, the salesman had no problem using it on the store's computer.  After I tried it on my computer (and it failed, SHOWING this message) I had another friend try it on theirs and it worked fine.  At the time I had been having a lot of trouble with my computer, so I EVENTUALLY wiped the entire computer and RELOADED it.  It solved my computer problems.  However, yesterday I tried to use the portable harddrive again and it still didn't work.  It displayed the message that I posted above.  Oddly, I have been able to use it twice with my computer.  The two times it has worked haev been when I started the computer with the portable hard drive already plugged in.  This only worked twice so far.  Sometimes when I start up the computer with the hard drive plugged in I still receive the error message.  When this message appears I have to manually turn off my computer and turn it back on.  There haven't been any other problems caused by this other than I can't consisitently use the portable hard drive.  Any help would be really appreciated.  I don't know what to do.
-willie
You have computer issues, no doubt, but the drive may have some also. I would thoroughly check it on another machine to make sure it is not part of the problem. The portable drive is fine.  It has worked on two other pc units.  Do you have any ideas as to what problem my computer has, or what I should do to find out what my problem is?  Thanks for the help.  I appreciate it.
-willieAnd the last time you formatted your computer and reinstalled Windows? What version? If XP, is SP2 on there and all updates?I reformatted my computer about three weeks ago.  I reinstalled Windows XP and I believe that I have all the current updates.  I believe one of those was service pack 2.  How would I check to make sure?

Also, eventhough I reformatted (which fully erased my computer and then reinstalled it as it was sent from the factory) I still her a sound once in a while that sounds like something is active even though there should be nothing going on.  The best way to describe it would be a sound like a program or application starting up.

By the way the error code is a as follows:

STOP: 0x000000CA (0x00000002, 0x81826030, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)You might WANT to read here:

Solve : Nvidia GeForce Drivers in SuSE Linux?

Answer»

POOP!!!!!!!!! So I Have some Nvidia GeForce 128MB card and in Windows it WORKS fine. But in Linux, when I scroll in websites it is very jerky and slow, many of the screensavers don't work, NONE of the OpenGL Screensavers work. also, when I go to K menu>System>Monitor>OpenGL I get an error message that says "Could not initialize OpenGL" Also there is a game that comes with the system that is called GL-117 and it says that there is no 3D card found. In the YaST control Center when I go to Hardware>Graphics Card and Monitor, I wait about 30 seconds and then I get a screen with grey dots and a black X that I can move with the mouse for 3 seconds, and then it goes BACK to YaST as if nothing ever happened. I have tried re-installing the drivers using the YaST updater and apparently it INSTALLED no problem but I still get the same symptopms. I also tried installing the drivers from the file I got here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_1.0-8756.html  but I got an error message saying something like I'm running some X THING and I have to shut it down before installing but I have no clue what that is and i'm very confused and pissed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Solve : Drive not ready, System halted?

Answer»

Hi,
Hopefully i have chosen the right topic for my problem - i am quite baffled as to what it could be.
I have a  intel pentium , operating system is windows 2000. When i start the computer up it goes through the process of starting then comes to a black screen with the following information.
PXE-MOF Exiting intel PXE Rom
PXE-E61 Media test failure, Check cable.
Drive not READY, System halted.

Previously today it loaded and the add new hardware screen popped up to add the ethernet, when i clicked on next to install it then said could not be located then jumped to the screen as above.

Can anyone tell me why i would be having this problem???
Thanks   It is trying to boot from a network drive. For whatever reason (you may or may not know) you need to get to the BIOS and make sure the boot order is CD, then FLOPPY, then hard drive, then PXE (or disable that one). Is this a Dell or an IBM by the way? What make and MODEL? Those have their own idiosyncrasies. To get to the BIOS i need to enter the setup?? Is that right?? I am unable to get into that - when the computer loads it comes up with the page and you can briefly see at the bottom press F2 for setup but it will not do this when prompted and then it quickly goes to the screen that i advised before. As far as the make and model of the computer I am not sure how to determine that the only thing on the front is intel inside celeron and moebius. Is their a way to tell??
Thanks TamaraRun Everest Home and it will tell you everything about the computer.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.htmlHi

After following the PREVIOUS advise i have changed the boot order as suggested. Now when the computer is turned on it comes to the screen where you can access the BIOS (F1) but then sits their for some time before eventully going to a black screen with Drive not ready, System Halted. I no longer have any of the other errors. I replaced the battery which seemed to help - especially the speed of the computer when starting up.

Any other ideas welcome.

As for the advise to run majorgeeks - i am unable to although this would be great, if i could get past this and actually into the desktop i could give it a go. But if i ever get that far i will do it for sure to test any other problems i may have.

Thank you  :-/With an almost total lack of information, one can only make assumptions. If the computer was booting correctly before this problem occurred, one MUST assume that the hard disk has problems. If the BIOS boot order is, for example

1. floppy
2. cdrom
3. hard disk
4. network (ethernet with PXE on)

and there is no bootable floppy or cd in, and the hard disk is corrupted, the BIOS will correctly try to boot from PXE. IF the drive is formatted FAT32, you might be able to boot from a floppy and run Scandisk to correct the problem.Faulty wiring? just an idea :-/Not faulty wiring. Just trying to boot from a source that is not available.
