Right About 2 months ago i turned my computer on and it had a error msg something about some files had corupted then it SAID please insert system recovery cd,so i did and when it had finished it wiped out everything on my pc,so by this time i was panicking cause of my dads work and that,i got it back to normal but without all the files on the pc,then when i went to play some music........ :-?NO SOUND!!!!!! error msg come up >> "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly." << ive TRIED : Putting the system recovery cd back in and nothings hapend,i got told to download a "sound card" but i dont know which one or where to go!!! everytime my computer does make a sound its only a little beep nothing else and it comes from the tower not the  speakers! I have Avertec Notebook Series 3200. I have tried to connect external Asus CD/DVD RW to my notebook via USB port. When I opened device manager, windows recognized it, but it had yellow exclamation mark on it. I got folowing message: ''This device is not configured correctly (Code 1). To update the drivers for this device, click Update Driver". Tried to update driver from the CD that i got with my CD/DVD RW and from the notebook (because I have copied all the files from driver CD to the notebook), wizard opened and said PLEASE WAIT WHILE WIZARD INSTALLS THE SOFTWARE. This took FOREVER, ALMOST whole day, bot it was never finished. I unistalled it from device manager, rebooted the machine, tried another option such as "ADD HARDWARE", wizard opened and same thing happened. Also, soon as I connect this CD/DVD RW to my notebook, the whole windows works slower. Is this normal?? Is this something to do with my BIOS, because when my original internal DVD RW broke, I am affraid that the person that was trying to fix it, disabled it in my BIOS?? If that's the case, how will I enable it in BIOS?? When I opened BIOS I did not see that option. Please, HELP!!!!!

Once upon a time, in a galaxy far,far away there was a poor lad who was unable to play games on his computer. That poor lad is me, and I cannot take it much longer. A virus hit my computer and wiped out the account my brother was USING at the time. I managed to get the pc back in working order, my account appeared unaffected. I still had all of my music. HOWEVER none of the shortcuts worked, so I was forced to reinstall a lot of stuff. One thing of interest is that most of my games do not work anymore, they simply won't run. Old games like 1602 A.D. or Age of Empires 2 don't have a problem, but the beloved Rome Total War and most of my other games won't run, not even Risk II. After running DXDIAG I found that under the DISPLAY tab it shows that there is no device. Under notes its states...

Obviously this is the problem, however I'm not so sure about how to fix it. I'm assuming that I need to install the drivers for my graphics card, but I fear doing that. My PC has an integrated graphics card on the motherboard. A YEAR ago I bought an ATI Radeon 9550 and installed it myself. However this caused my computer to be unable to function. I had to take it into a shop and they said that I had not removed the previous graphic card drivers, thus causing the problem. The virus would appear to have wiped out most of what was installed, including the driver for my ATI graphics card. So I guess what I'd like to KNOW is...

How is my computer running without showing a device for the display?

Why do those few games play without the device being shown? Even the integrated card was able to play most of the games that I have, but it won't play them now.

If I install the ATI drivers will that cause a conflict between my old integrated card again? (I can't afford to take it back to a computer shop again if this causes my computer to not function)

Have I investigated as much as possible into the actual problem?

What would you suggest that I do, that wouldn't risk causing more problems?

Is this a really simple problem that involves hitting a really big red button?

You have so many problems that I'm afraid the best solution IS a big red button: back up your data and reinstall Windows.1. Take out your ATI card
2. reformat, reinstall widows (use onboard intergrated card)
3. Take a break
4. turn computer off, put in your ATI card, leave monitor plugged into onboard intergrated chip, boot up
5. go to the device manager and DISABLE intergrated video card.
6. Turn comp off, PLUG monitor into ATI card
7. hope this works
8. download ATI drivers from their website

If this messes up your computer (it souldn't because I was in the same situation as you and did the same thing)
1. Don't blame me
2. go to safe mode and put it back on your intergrated chip and try some other solution

It's a plotter or a printer?It is the plotter drivers for the printer . I am installing an epson stylus 800 printer on my pc / windows 98 / . I had to go to the epson web SITE to download the drivers . I don,t know how to install AutoCAD FILES , and the notepad instructions for installing the drivers was too TECHNICAL for me to understand :-?Post again and attach the instructions text doc to the post. What happened prior to this? If XP you can do a system restore to an earlier time.im using a compaq pentium 2 with windows 98. when i enter setup before it boots up, the boot order only shows floppy as 1st, hard drive 2nd, pnp device#1 3rd. my onboard devices are parallel port, serial port a, serial port b, floppy controller, other input controller, audio device.Are these CDROM drives new additions to the hardware? Is this a Deskpro EN or some other model? Some earlier Deskpro's were VERY picky about ADDING things, and required CS jumpers. What are your jumper settings?They just stopped working when i tried to install nero. its a compaq deskpro. i dont know what you mean by jumper settings, can you explain.
If you didn't physically do anything inside the case the jumpers are not an issue. I am assuming that everything worked fine before. Please correct me if this is wrong.

Well, the issue remains that the CDROM device must show up in the BIOS before Windows can begin to  recognize it. You do not see it listed there? And there is no way to include it?i dont know how to include it

its a fairly new revelation, but poses a huge problem for me since i watch my movies on the computer. i can read old burned dvds and cds but everything new i GET doesnt register in my computer.

its a Dell Dimension E310 running Windows XP. its a DVD-RW drive and the software i was using to watch the dvds was the default windows media center player and i used Nero to burn them. the problem started about 3 weeks ago and the only other problem i have with my computer is an annoying little WinFixer virus i cant seem to shakre off the computer no matter how many times i use PC-cillin or Ad-Aware.

Hi all - I have been handed-down my 1st PC.  Therefor I'm a green novice at this level of computing.  there is NO makers name anywhere to be found on it.  So it must be a 'kit.'  It uses Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2.  I have not investigated further info.  And the problem I'm having is that all sounds, except CD/DVD origin are Donald Duck SOUND-alikes.

Any help would be appreciated.  The screens I've 'visited' tell me all relevant devices etc are working correctly.   If REALTEK AC97 Audio & MS GS Wavelength SW Synth are relevant.  I gather from other posts in similar topics, that either the sound card/drivers, or M'board could be suspect.

Please go to Start, and Run.
At the prompt, type the phrase "dxdiag" without the quotes and click OK.
After the window loads, click on the "Sound" tab.
Take a screenshot of the window (Hit Alt and Print Screen).
Close dxdiag, and go into Paint (Start, All Programs, Accessories, Paint)
Hit Ctrl and V. An image of the dxdiag window should appear.
Go to FILE, and Save. Save it as a JPG picture on your desktop, naming it whatever you want.
Make another post on the forum, and attach the picture (When you type your post, look under the box for a Attach section. Hit Choose, and select the JPG you created.

Wait... ugh! The picture for me is too big. If you get an error while trying to post while attaching to the picture, please open a new window of whatever browser you're USING, and use that new window to go to www.imageshack.us. Do the same thing as with attachments, then click HOST it!. This site will upload the picture to the net.

After the picture is uploaded, you should see 9 boxes with URLs in them. Highlight the bottom one, and hit Ctrl and C. Then, click on the window with the post. Click this button: . Two boxes with img and /img should appear. Put that bottom URL between the img boxes.

Your post should include a picture of the DxDiag screen. Note that the colors of the picture may look distorted. This is normal; it's a necessary evil when saving in the small-size JPG format.

DVD-RW can burn CD's or DVD's. CDRW can only burn CD's. DVD-RW can be had for $40 so no need not to get that. Make sure that the burning software comes with it. I have an HP PSC 1210 All-In-One hooked up to desktop computer on a network. There are two laptops connected to the network. One is relitively new with windows XP. The other is an ancient BRICK with Windows 98 SE. On the brick, I want to set up the printer so I can print stuff on it. The problem is, when i put the CD with the drivers in, it says that I don't have enough RAM, HDD space and I don't have a USB port. Is there any way to MAKE it work anyway? I only want the bare minimum to just print, I don't want all the image software for the scanner and all that crap. Any ideas?If your computer doesn't have a USB port, and the printer requires it, then I WOULD just give this up... As far as drivers, try the HP website. They might LET you do a custom installation, so you won't install the rest of the software they give you. Only the bare bones. Your connection (USB) seems to be the bug issue here however...

The I plug my Philips Gogear mp3 player into the computer it finds it and I can LOOK at the songs I have on it, delete songs, and put songs on it. I just can't edit anything. I know it is possible to do because on my other computer it works. On my other computer it finds it as a disk drive. (Drive E I think.) Then i'm able to edit song names and play the songs strait off of it and onto my computer. The model number is a  SA178/07. If you need to more info just reply back. FlameWell on the computer it DOES work on, is a newer computer and it is a laptop. I think it might be 2003 or so. The computer that it does not work on is a year 2000 and it isn't a laptop. I'm really not sure if I have the newest drivers installed but when I plug it in the USB port on the computer is does work on, I can click on My Computer > then the E drive, or removable drive. On the computer that is doesn't work on I can get to it two ways. I can get to it by going to My Computer > then it shows it there with a little icon that looks like I Mp3 player. The other way I can get to it is by going to Control Panel > Portable Media Devices > then it shows up there withthe same MP3 player icon next to it. It just doesn't let me edit anything or listen to the songs without copying it to my computer first. If there is anyway to update my DRIVER that would be great! If you think im just stuck, im saving up for a new computer anyways so I can just wait. Thanks.

Look for anything about enable as disk, or SOMETHING along those lines... I've NEVER used an MP3 Player in My Computer before. I'll try this on my ipod tomorrow if I can. Check your manufacturer's website for player updates.

I remember when I was on the computer it did work on, I could right click on that and enable it as a Portable Media Device so there must be a way to change it to a disk drive on the computer it doesn't work on.Exactly. FlameUh oh. It looks like when I right click on it I only have the options of Open, Explore, and Format. :-/Update the drivers and check the FAQs from the player manufacturer's website.

FlameAlright i'll reply if I find anything interesting to even if I resolve the problem. Oh and one more thing that might help is, when I was in the process of UPDATING my MP3 Player, one of those boxes pop up that ask you what you want to do. Example: Open folder to view files, play in media player, etc. Anyways, it let me edit, listen to music, and it found it as a disk drive. I never understood why it did that. When I unplugged it, then plugged it back in, it was back to the normal thing. When that happened, was when I decided to make this topic. I thought that might be good to know.

I turned on my pc today and nothing loads. I see the pentium screen for one second and then it goes to this screen (photos).

Is this an IDE or a SATA/RAID/SCSI setup? I note from the pics that there are no secondary IDE devices.Everything is still connected fine i havent been inside it.

I LEFT the pc on overnight logged in and i think at some point it reset itself and loaded as far as the login screen and stayed on the screen for some hours. When i woke up I turned it off without logging in.

Then when i turned it on an hour or so later the problem started. my hard DRIVE is connected by sata if thats of any relevance. TWO cd/dvd drives are connected by ide.

The problem is that these PICTURES don't really show anything. Enter your BIOS and ensure that the SATA array is enabled and that the computer is set to boot from it.

Okay, a friend of mine plugged in his Ricoh Color Laser AP204 Printer, and it prompted him to download the drivers.

He downloaded the drivers for Windows XP onto his desktop. The file appears to be a self extracting "Win Zip Self Extractor" .exe
The .exe extracted the files to  the "C:\Temp\r40063L5\" DIRECTORY. It created three folders in the directory, each are named disk1, disk2, and disk3. All three disks have lots of strange files in them. My friend is running Windows XP.

How can he get the drivers installed so his printer will work?  :-?

I was just using the computer, went to put in Sims 2, and nothing happened. Open up Explorer, DVD drive went missing. Checked Device Manager, this came up:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Anyone have the DRIVERS and/or a solution to my problem?

* Was the DVD drive working properly before this?
* Did you installed or CHANGE any configuration?

I had same problem with a graphics card a while back and found out what ONE it was by accessing it's dump file in DOS.....  If that makes SENCE???

DocI have the cd in the F:// cdrom drive.  I have gone to:  documents--my computer--F://.  When I click on the F:// drive icon, a blank screen comes up as though the cd is empty.  Thanks!Right click on it and choose properties, then right click and choose explore. I Have an icon comp runinning 2.8 GHZ pentium 4 and 448 mb of ram the problem is my DVD rw it doesnt recognise the Datawrite 8x MACH4 DVD-R discs im PUTTING into the drive , it has no prob running other cd-r discs and has no prob watching dvds but it just wont recognise the above ones

Don't buy those DISKS!its okay ive figured the prob when i bought them they were advertised as pc dvdr discs but apparently they are for dvd recorders , well i think thats the reason i have yet to check , because i have bought some tesco ones and they are being recognised

I ran spyware (ewido, Microsoft messenger, spybot, spyware, ad-aware and ccleaner) and found passe partout.exe and trojan diamin.t.  I removed them but my sound and cd drivers are somehow corrupted and wont reinstall.  Sometimes I just GET error 39 message and sometimes the system crashes.  I have a dell dimension 4600c windows xpOpen Device Manager and uninstall the existing device drivers. REBOOT and Windows should start the "Found New Hardware" wizard. Point it to your new drivers.Yes - i have done that.  I get an error Code 39 message that a driver is corrupted.  The Catch-22 is I can't put my drivers back in because my cd doesn't work.Can you just download them? A CDROM doesn't really have drivers beyond what Windows USES. I UPGRADED THE BIOS FROM ASUS. IT DIDN'T CHANGE ANYTHING. I STARTED PLAYING AROUND WITH RUNNING THE IDE IN ENHANCED OR COMPATIBLE MODE. THE INSTRUCTIONS SAID THAT IF I HAD WINDOWS XP, I SHOULD RUN IN THE ENHANCED MODE, WHICH I DID. HOWEVER, WHEN I CHANGED IT TO THE COMPATIBLE MODE THE BIOS STARTED SHOWING THE HARD DRIVE IN IT'S CORRECT PRIMARY POSITION. Not really sure if this is the right place to post - I don't really have much of a clue what I'm doing with computers. I've had a Dell Dimension for about a YEAR and a half, about a month ago I reinstalled XP. I could only get the CD and DVD player on the cd drive thing (samsung cdrw/dvd sm-352f ) to work and it wouldn't recognise games - the screen froze every time I put one in the drawer. I downloaded the driver from the dell website for the samsung cdrw/dvd sm-352f and it worked fine for about two weeks before the same thing happening again. This time I've tried to DOWNLOAD the driver again, and although it seems to install it doesn't fix the problem of not being able to run games. If anyone could help, I'd be very grateful, I'm experiencing football manager withdrawl symptoms  :-/Did you get this machine NEW? What model? What is the service tag for the machine? (It should be on the side of the case). Do you have any spyware/adware/virus protecion in place and being used? Do you have a SHINY Windows CD if you should need to reinstall?try some Dianose test see if the software can detect your problem

I have a horrible history of messing around with computers and they never quite work right after me, so i thought i'd ask the advice of people who know what the *censored* is going on before i wade any further into trouble...

i have a sony usb 2 512MB MEMORY STICK, it had worked fine for two months...  my partner bought a buffalo 256mb momory stick and when she attaches it i sometimes comes up as an unknown device, sometimes as usb mass storage device, and in the device mamager it says 'working properly' but then when you try to transfer stuff across it doesn't work...  the computer suggested that she should follow the windows xp trouble shoot, so she did and it suggested she uninstalled the driver so she did and then re-attach her stick drive, but the same thing has happened again, and now it won't even recognise mine...  please god help me as i have some uncompleted RESEARCH in malignant *censored* lesions on there thats i need to access...

I've never updated any drivers before but I bought a couple games for my PC and they both don't work.  Halflife2 and GTA:SA.  HL2 just shutsdown my computer and GTA:SA starts with audio but the screen is black and then it shortly afterwards, freezes.  To try and fix the problem I'm trying to update my drivers, but I can't find my graphics card driver update.  I have a PNY Nvidia GeForce 6200 graphics card.  Anyone know where I can find an update for it?  Also, if more information is needed, just let me know, because like I said, never had to update any drivers so I don't know what else I should put on here.http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.aspWell I found that earlier, but I don't see GeForce 6200 on there.   :-/nCidia uses unified driver. "Download Accelerator" utilities should be disabled when downloading any drivers.


Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing the drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly.


Before installing new drivers make sure you uninstall all NVIDIA display drivers from the Windows Control PANEL. Browse to the Start Menu > Windows Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and search for "NVIDIA Windows Display Drivers" or "NVIDIA Display Drivers" and select remove.

setup couldn't install driver.cab so I SKIPPED it

I installed the m-audio duo usb sounddriver a couple of months ago and since then i don't get any sound out of the avi-files from my digital camera. I've uninstalled the m-audio driver and I can SEE on the display that there is sound on the file, but there's nothing to be HEARD. All other avi/video/sound-files work. Does ANYBODY know what to do about this? My regular sound driver is called soundmax ( i think) and the computer is a toshiba laptop.
When you are tranferring to you computer it will come as one files have you play it in window media player?
Did you try to install some audio codec?
What player are you using?actually i just found a solution, but a pretty WEIRD one. when i open Ableton Live the sound turns on.OK nice dude

Help.  I don't even know what to call this problem; can only describe it.  Web pages don't load completely.  Background colors are missing.  Some sidebar menus are missing, although the cursor can recognize that they are there when passing over the blank space.  Another example- at Amazon, click on a book to look inside, comes up blank.  I've tried everything I can think of.  Happens on IE or MOZILLA.  Montior is NVidia.OK and how about some helpful information, like computer specs, operating system, service pack, adware/spyware/virus protection being used, what happened PRIOR to this, etc.  :-? nVidia doesn't make monitors.  
Sorry about the lack of info.  HP pavillion a250n, running Windows XP, monitor is MAG, graphics card is Invidia GeForce 4MX 440 with AGP 8x, Norton anti-virus, Spy-bot.  All worked fine until I downloaded Mozilla 1.5 but problem happens with either Mozilla or IE.  I have tried System Restore and have re-installed Nvidia, but problem persists.  Another example:  The map is invisible on mapquest, though the rest of the page is fine.  Cursor changes from POINTER to hand as it passes over map area, but you can't see anything. I have a Dell inspiron 2650 with XP home.  I bought a IO MAgic 4GB drive and connected it to the USB port.  The system said it found new HARDWARE and started the wizard.  Couldn't find the drivers.  The maufacturer has drivers for win 98 none for XP.  Does anyone have the IO Magic Giga bank 4GB running and can you tell me which driver it is using?  Maybe I can add that driver to my system.  
Or can you tell me how to add additional drivers to XP so it will really plug and play?

When I look at device manager it show enesyslogic with yellow dot and it is under Other devices.

I have an Intel 82801 CA/CAM ultra ATA storage controller.

Mad60Are you talking about a USB 2.0 3.5 inch HDD Enclosure?Sounds like a thumb drive. Lots of folks have problems with those > 1 gig models.  It is a 4GB external drive that is USB2.0 and it says it is compatible with USB1.1 which is what I have on the laptop and my desk top.  I wanted to use it to share FILES between the desktop and laptop.  
It worked on the desktop but I am on the road and I need the data and I can't access it on the laptop.
It is a small device about 1.5 inches by 2 inches with a usb plug built in.It looks like you should have received drivers and info with it.

I've recently set up a home WIRELESS network.  All computers do not have BUILT in wireless capability so I'm using PCI adapters.  All computers are working except one in this regard:  When I enable wireless, I get connectivity but it shuts down connectivity to one specific COMPUTER which is in ANOTHER room.  Vice/Versa  This does not occur with any other computers.  Since disabling the problem computer's wireless, all computers are working just fine.  I've tried different types of adapters; Linksys USB type and Netgear PCI.  Same problem.  Has anyone else out there encountered this issue? I have just bought a new 200GB Western Digital hard drive. I already have an internal hard drive as my master so I am SETTING it to the slave but for some reason I cannot get the driver to work. I am running on Windows XP and it does install the new hardware when it is first connected. When I go into MY Computer the new drive does not show up. I then go into Device Manager and it tells me that the drive is Not Initilized. I have no way of formatting the drive is it is not SHOWING up anywhere I can see to be able to do this.

Right now I am out of ideas. Both my father and I have tried various different ways. We have set both of them to Cable to see if that made any difference but alas it did not. If anyone can help me out her that would be great. I haven't got much HAIR left to pull out. Meilin .....Several things you could check ..
1. check the manual for your new hard drive and see if it wants the jumpers set as slave or Cable select ..    Is this a IDE drive ? or something else ?

2. Go into the bios and make sure that the bios is set to detect the slave drive ?
 
3 ..... go to control panel / Administrative tools /Computer management / Disk management ....... then look and see if there is any referance to it there .

Hello. I am operating a Dell Dimension 2350. Windows XP. For some reason, I am now receiving numerous error messages whenever I start up my machine. I may have accidentally deleted a file or two last year on it, and have recently started to use the same machine again. Also just installed a new printer.    All the errors INDICATE I am missing my 'winspool.drv'     It is my understanding that I go to C:WINDOWS/System/      and the appropriate file, then double-click to extract it. However, my winspool.drv is there but an 'unknown file' and will not open. Can anyone advise me of how to open it?   If I open it(extract it), then I can FIND out if that method resolves the numerous 'winspool.drv' errors.

there are 3 winspools in the Windows folder     Sorry it took so long to get back to you. But it didn't work. There is only one of those files in the System32 folder. This one: "Windows 16-bit WOW Psuedo Printer Driver (LOADED as WINSPOOL.DRV)"
And that's it. I copied it over to the System folder opened it, ran it, etc. No change.  I keep getting those winspool.drv errors.    I tried deleting the printer from my pc in an attempt to re-install, but when I attempt to open the 'printers/faxes' from the CONTROL Panel, the window comletely closes out.  Attempts to re-install Windows XP went nowhere too! Received a message stating the XP on my pc is newer than the disc. The one that came with the pc..!!!  

Any advice? Please....... :-?

I have an HP Pavillion and run Windows XP. I popped a music CD in my Samsung Cd R/RW SW-232B today and got a message related to not having a CD Drive. The drive has worked great for several years and I could load software, burn disks etc..etc..
I checked my device manager and I was sad to find out there was an error listed with my device. I checked my system information and indeed it was not listed. There is a yellow exclamation MARK and so I started the Troubleshoot wizard. The message read "UNABLE to start device Code-10"
The first thing I did was try to install an updated driver. I couldn't find any on my system and I got a message to load the CD with the driver on it. Obviously this won't work with no CD drive.
I got onto the Samsung site and downloaded what I assumed was a newer driver but as soon as I RAN the download software it stopped and said "Drive Not Found" not to be critical but I pretty much already knew this. I tried a few other sites and the same thing happened with the software and I got similar messages regarding drive not found and it can't continue. I decided to try the next thing suggested and that was to disconenct the drive physically from my system and then attach the cables and the power. This didn't help either. I uninstalled it from the device manager and then editied my registery and removed it from there as well. The system goes out and detects the drive when I reboot. Then the magic yellow exclaimation mark is back and I'm back to square one. I decided to try something else so I did a system restore to a few weeks ago and of course it didn't help anything either.

Any ideas would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Sometimes an optical drive just dies. Drivers are not needed beyond what Windows uses, although burning software has to be installed to burn data.  

You can try that drive in another machine to confirm it's functionaliy (or not), but I think it is just time to get another. (There's a reason most only have a 90 day warrany!)Being basically a cheapskate at heart I always try to bring everything back from the DEAD but I think you might be right in this case.
A lot of drives are dying these days it seems from the postings on the board.

Hey EVERYONE,  i have a Gateway with Windows XP PRO SP1, a 128mb winfast vid, 256Ram, 500mhz PIII, a Maxtor 60GB(master), and a IBM 13GB(slave). My New Audio Card Is a CT4780 Sound Blaster Live! and i am trying to install it.

 My problem was that i was looking for the driver to the Audio Card made for windows xp, and none were working (not even from their website), it kept giving me an error that the multimedia device could not be installed due to "wrong Data" on the add new hardware wizard. One of the drivers i last downloaded said it was made for windows NT and i installed it. it ASKED me to restart my computer and i did. when my computer boots up now, when it goes to load the login screen, my computer just restarts.

i have a compaq modem and i can't seem to get connected to the internet ssomeone told me to reload the DRIVERS my operating system is windows 98se and i don't have the windows disk or any other floppy disc or cd with the driver on them it came with my computer can anyone tell me how to check to see if the modem is working it is a compaq 144 data+fax modem series 570  i don't KNOW much about COMPUTERS any help would be APPRECIATED. :-?Control Panel/Modem/ and choose diagnostics or more info. Hey, I have windows xp professional w/ service PACK 2 and my external hard drive is a western digital 300gb which i partioned into 2 seperate drives of around 145gb each. My external hard drive is antec nexstar 3. Everytime I plug in my external in to the usb drive, my computer would detect it and then restart. I know it's not my usb port because when i plug my computers usb in, my computer doesnt restart. After my computer restarts and goes back to windows, it has a ERROR message saying the error was unknown device driver. Any help would be grateful. Thanks in advanceI would try that drive on another computer or two and see if it functions appropriately.

What is your computer make/model?Well it works on other computers. I tried it with another external hard drive and it does the same thing on my computer but not on other computers. I built my computer it is a AMD xp 3200 and my motherboard is Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe.Tell us some details about the power supply.The power supply is ATX 350W and I have 2 drives currently running on it, a 80gb and a 30gb. I have a CD burner and a DVD Burner and a floppy drive.If it is not a name brand power supply, or if  the current is not enough, that may be enough extra to cause this problem. What kind of graphics card? Do you have a known working more powerful PSU to test with?I have a ATI radeon 9600 XT and i dont have a higher psu to test with but I dont think THATS the problem because I unplugged one of my hard drive and tested it again and it still happened? hi guyz i use to be able to watch dvd's on my computer and i have a dvd player but i ACCEDENTLY deleted somthin and i CANT watch them any more

i can watch mpeg, and all that sort of stuff but no dvd's ANYONE know how i can get it BACK eg driver or somethingYou need to reinstall your DVD software i.e. WinDVD, PowerDVD or whatever. Do you have the CD for this?yes i do mate thatnks for that i try it and see if it works should i uninstall it first then INSTALL it I think that you do need to uninstall it first... Sometimes if you deleted something that was really needed by the software... an error is going to come up and say "Uninstall.exe as been corrupted" Thats when you need to reinstall it from the disk...  Hope that Helps...Yes, uninstall it first.

I have a Dell Dimension 8100 Pentium 4 with 512 MB of memory. My OS is Windows XP. When I click on My Computer, it shows me my Hard Disk Drives, Devices With Removable Storage, and Network Drives. Under Network Drives, there is an icon with a red x on it and by the side it says memory_card on 'Npic7a94d' (Z:)  It also says the Network Drive is disconnected. I have no idea what it refers to or how I can fix this problem. I am not aware of any memory card  that would not be installed correctly or working.

If you need more info. let me know, OTHERWISE, any help is appreciated.is this machine part of a network or was it once part of a network.Well the only network I can think of (I don't EVEN know if it really is a network) is for a wireless HP printer but that's it.Armando,

To get this computer running the best that it can are you willing and able to do a fresh install of XP? I don't know the history on this setup, but it would be a great way to remove all of the variables other than the machine and the operating system.
If I knew how to do a fresh install of XP, yes, I'd most likely do it. I'd just have to know how to do it step-by-step and how to save my files and possibly music. All other software I can download so it's not that big of a deal.Here you go. It's pretty simple:

1) Back up data
2) Insert XP CD
3) REBOOT machine
4) Follow onscreen instructions.

Don't be too hard on yourself. That's why I think a good format and reinstall will fix most of the remaining problems. We can SORT out the rest with a download of the drivers from the Dell website first, and saved on a CD.
