Well I am back. I have DSL hooked up we are running fine. I got the XP operating system installed and it is fine. I dont have sound. I do not know how to find out what KIND of mother board I have. the only numbers I found on the board are M266A

I dont know if this MEANS anything. Where is the LOCATION of the identiy of my mother board so I can install the driver for my sound?

hey, i just installed win98se on my laptop and once i installed it, the setup showed me that i was missing some drivers and it wanted to copy them from a location.  at this time i didn't have th drivers so i just skipped the process, but now i got the drivers off the internet and put them on a floppy.  when i put the floppy in my laptop and go to move the file to the hard drive it doesn't show any of the files, it says they are hidden.  i put the files on the from a computer that is running windows me so that might be a problem but they're just ax,vxd,sys,etc. files and their not showing up when i PU the floppy on the laptop.

Ok so i just recieved a DVD/RW drive off ebay however after installing it and getting it to play CD's IM having a little trouble getting it to play DVD's, i tired downloading a plug in from microsoft.com nivida something or other. but this only plays the 1st 25 secs and no sound

I have a HP Pavilion 4530.I upgraded my cpu from a 350 to a 500 mhz,but my bios wont detect that theres a 5oomhz cpu it says 350.And it wont let me MANUALLY change it.My bios is phoenix bios 4.0 release 6.0.3.Can anyone please help?Is that an authorized upgrade? Most Pavilions are not upgradable - they are what they are and they were designed to be that way.

It may be that there is a jumper on the motherboard, but I suspect not from my experience. You can upgrade RAM, hard drive, etc., but processors are a LITTLE different.

You may have to clear the BIOS, but I would wait until you are positive about upgrading the CPU!

i know how MUCH memory it can hold its max is 384mb.but i have a 500 mhz cpu in and it works fine,but its only saying it has 350mhz.i have flashed my bios and it still doesnt recognize 500mhz.i am trying to FIND out if there is a jumper or update or something i can do.cause it wont let me set it manually in the bios setup.Why don't you download BELARC advisor for free at www.belarc.com and see what your CPU speed is registered at?

When it boots, does it say 500 Mhz or you are just assuming that because it runs at all?

ThanksNewGen is no longer in business, but apparently this is a laser printer for which supplies ARE available at some cost. Drivers are hard to FIND, though there is reference to a Win2000 Driver.

I think this would make a better PAPERWEIGHT than a PRINTING solution.

I recently bought a 250Gb internal hdd for my dell computer.  However, when i went to install it i only had one ide socket on my mother board.  I bought a new ide strip cable to connect a second hdd to the port i already had, but then when i tried to access the drive, the speeds were ridiculously slow.  

A friend recommended buying a Raid pci card to give me additional ide sockets.  I did this, purchasing the 8212 RAID PCI CARD from ECLIPSE computers http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/product.aspx?code=IO-PIDE133R  

However, when i put the card in and boot up windows XP, it is recognised and windows tries to installs it.  Windows cannot find a driver for it, even though i have inserted the cd-rom.  

The instructions are of no use as they seem to be designed for ppl who can write their own operating system, not for amateurs like me! There are no help details, and from the box i cannot even tell who makes the thing!

I had similar problems with my wireless network card.
Try removing the card software/drivers, switch off and remove the PCI card, reboot then reinstall the software then switch off and reinstall the card.

Xp will "find new hardware" and install drivers.

A bit long winded but XP can sometimes try and install from it's own database rather than the new updated drivers you installed.

Jimi've already tried that friend, but to no avail.  Has anyone got any other suggestions?What model Dell? You neglected to say. Do you need RAID capability? Or you just needed another IDE port for a secondary hard drive? WOuldn't a cable with an empty plug serve as well?

I'll await model # to investigate further......i'm running a del DIMENSION 2400 series with an Intel Celeron 2.6 ghz, and 1gb ram.  I need the card only for the additional ide socket, not raid capability.  i tried using an ide cable with two sockets, but it makes both my current hdd and my new one run ridiculously slow.  i have a friend who bought the same hdd and is running it through a raid card and says it operates at a normal speed.  any thoughts?Did you jumper both hard drives as cable select (CS) and not master and slave. Dell's like it the CS way.  The primary drive goes farthest from the motherboard on the cable.The problem i have there is i have no way of knowing what my current dell hdd is set as, it has no markings on the back.

When i first tried installing the new hdd on the single idd cable i set it first as CS, which caused lots of nasty error messages when i tried to boot windows, and then i tried slave, which seemed to work allbeit extremely slowly.  It all seems a bit of a mess to meThey've got to be both set as CS. Maybe if you did a check with belarc (free at www.belarc.com) you could find the drive's identity and check the website for jumper setings

OR  post your service tag # and we can look it up at Dell's web site and find out for certain what it shipped with. That might be even better.I used the dell website as you said to check the jumper settings.  By setting both drives as CS windows will not load, i can only IMAGINE it is looking for windows on the new hdd.  When i set them to master and slave, then i can access the drive but the speeds are monotonous.  Do you have an ideas on how to get my ide card WORKING?
Most RAID cards want the drives set as master. Since this a PCI card, check the cards driver info and see you if you have an option for bus mastering.Did you do the CS configuration on the RAID card, or on the orginal IDE channel? I am unclear about this. You shouldn't do this on the RAID card.OK heres where i am.

I bought a new hdd for my computer, and tried to link it in to my exising ide port on my motherboard as a secondary drive to my existing hdd.  Access to the new hdd was extremely slow, and access to the exisintg hdd slowed. I tried using both Master/Slave settings and CS settings.  Nothing improved.

I then bought a raid card, so that i could get another ide port to run my new hdd through, thus releasing the burden from the one on my mother board.  However the raid card will not install.  Windows recognises its there, and tries to intall it but fails to find the driver.  I have tried pointing windows to the driver on the disc, and tried downloading a new driver, and pointing windows to that.  Windows still won't find the driver.  Can anyone help?

I am trying to load a game Return to Castle Wolfenstein on my COMPUTER.  I have recently switched from Windows 98 to Windows ME.  It worked on 98.  Now I keep getting the message that "GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load Open GL subsystem.

In reading the details of the error it KEEPS noting that it failed to fina an appropriate PIXELFORMAT and GLW_ChoosePFD ( 16, 16, 0) failed.

I have gone on the products website and tried to do the fixes they SUGGESTED by the files don't seem to be there and everything else seems fine (but I am not that computer literate to KNOW all).

For about 8 months now, I havent been able to use any CD's. My drive will READ them (I own a Gateway Intel Pentium 4 Proccesor) and the LITTLE light next to the drive will blink. But it never stops blinking. I let it try reading the DISK for about 2 and half hours and it did stop blinking. But the computer said that the CD wasnt there.

Help please....Your drive is defective. REPLACE it.Agreed. New drive time. They just don't build 'em like they used to!  

I have multiple old DELLS and IBM's, 5-8 years old and never had a problem with any of them.

My husband screwed up my pc. So we reinstalled a new WindowsXP version that I went out and bought. but now in the device manager, under the network adapter theres a list of other devices.. ethernet...LEXMARK.. etc that all have yellow ? on them, I cant get online and my DSL provider says im missing all those drivers. What do i do now to fix it. Should I try reinstalling XP again to see if they will load up?

A simple reinstall will get you back where you are now, unless you have the drivers on a CD.

But because im at work right now i dont have much information and at home i cant get online due to the drivers, according to my ISP support.
I have a sony vaio pc.
Husband claims all he did was update the security patch 2 and after he did that he says nothing would work.
So instead of doing a restore which i think would have fixed the problem.
He pulls out a windows XP cd that i had bought a while back before i bought this new sony and downloaded it thinking it would fix the problem.
But I cant get online and in the device manager its listing THINGS like my DSL modem, MY printer, etc and giving them a yellow question mark which i know means that there is a conflict with those, My question would how would I fix that?
What if i DELETED all those with the question mark, unplug the DSL, printer, and reloaded the XP?
How could we have lost almost 2 years of pictures and other things just by him updating a patch??

That is what probably blanked out all of your former info. If you formatted the drive during install, it's gone. If you (posssibly) loaded it "over the top", the data is still there but the programs and drivers would need to be reinstalled.

Since you referred to all of the exclamation points, I am betting all previous info was formatted away. That is why a regular backup strategy is so essential. All hardware will FAIL eventually. If it wasn't Microsft that got you, a dead hard drive would.If you go to the Sony website, they will have all of the CORRECT drivers, based on the model number. If you can't acdcess on your computer, enlist the service of a friend that has high speed internet access AND a CD burner to retrieve them for you (if you did not get them on a separate CD with your purchase)

I took the advice and installed the updated driver for my sound card. Still nothing. My computer reconizes the hardware,  and says that it's updating the system settings, but still no sound. Driver guide is an excellent choice, but I believe that Nvidia drivers support all Nvidia videocards that have been RELEASED so there is no need to obtain drivers elsewhere at the risk of obtaining outdated ones.If for some reason the latest drivers give your computer a headache, the is an archive section on the left of Raptor's link. My CD ROM shuts for a brief period of time, maybe two seconds and before it even reads the disk it opens back up again... However if the tray is held shut it will stay after a maybe 20 seconds, but then it wont read a disk still.  Please help me, i just got a new game and i CANT play it! Have you scnaned for VIRUSES? Copying software might see the CD-ROM as CD-RW. You can not use its copying capabilities without such software, anyway.Win9x often sees a DVD as a CDROM. Try inserting a DVD disk and see if it will play. Quote

I purchase a touch screen lcd and it arrived today. Before I installed the software I plugged in the USB touch controller the add new hardware prompt came up so I used that to get it ready to use. Then I installed the SUPPLIED software for the touch screen and when I went to configure it there was no trace of it in the software itself. I then double checked the device manager section and the MONITOR was LISTED as "plug and play monitor". I then uninstalled the drivers, rebooted, installed the software first, rebooted, plugged in the USB and VGA PLUGS, and the software still doesn't show the USB controller. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I bought my Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 PCI graphics card about a year ago. I installed it and it worked PERFECTLY. Not too long ago I had to do a system restore. Since then, my graphics card will not show up. I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling, updating the drivers, everything, but NOTHING works. It STILL will not show up. In my dxdiag, under DISPLAY 1, it says n/a, where my NVidia card should show up. Due to this, I cannot play any of my games. I would attach my dxdiag.txt but I see that we cannot do so. Don't let XP find it, select it yourself from the list.I went to the control panel and did as you said. I ran into a problem. It says "There was a problem installing this hardware: Video Controller (VGA Compatible) An error occured during the installation of the device. Access is denied." What do I do about that?      Do you have onboard graphics? Could that have been accisdentally re-enabled in the BIOS? I have an OLDER STYLE Dell desktop optiplex Gx1. Its only a Pentium II with a 6 gig hard drive. So my question is I came across a couple of different hard drives one being a Maxtor which I think just from visiting there site and entering the model#7213AT says that this one is a 203 gig.But once again Iam not sure. The other one IHAVE is a Western Digital Caviar 21200 if that means anything.

So my question is I came across a couple of different hard drives one being a Maxtor which I think just from visiting there site and entering the model#7213AT says that this one is a 203 gig.But once again Iam not sure. The other one Ihave is a Western Digital Caviar 21200 if that means anything.
So my question is out of the two of these which one is better and how much of a project is this to install myself? I am somewhat good with my hands and did install a CD-ROM in my system already. If anyone can help with all or any of these questions it would be greatly appreciated thanks

I recently aquired a gateway 200arc, with a intel pro/wireless  2200BG card and for some reason the laptop can't detect it. It worked fine before a REFORMAT that was done on it and after that i doens't seem to work. The laptop has 1.2 celeron M with 256 memory and COMBO DRIVE. I'm setting up an older computer for a game i liked to play(usnf97 awsume combat fs).The sound,video and game controlers (all one device) is not showing up in device manager.I've tried to have the system detect through add hardware in CONTROL panel.can't think of what eles to try.It's shown up before on a faulty install of the os so its been fdisk and reformatted and good reinstall. I have drivers for it but not SURE what to do.

I can play DVD's & burn STUFF on there, but when I put another disc in there, like a CD-R with files it takes forever to read it & when it does, it reads it as an empty disc & you see nothing in there. Though I can still see what's in that disc when I pop it in another COMPUTER. I can still burn files, but when it's done, I eject it & put it back in so it can read it, yet it I still get the same crap.

It's a HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481B.Phantom_Savage....So lets get this straight ....it will play dvds and burn dvds , but it wont read or write a cd ........is that correct ?  Are you able to play a music cd in it ?
What operating system are you using ?
Is this dvd drive in a Dell by any chance ?

I was browsing around a site and I saw the BenQ Black IDE DVD Burner Model DW1620 PRO BLK BONUS - Retail and I looked at the product specifications to see if my computer is compatible. The only thing on my computer that does not meet the specifications is the Pentium.  I have a Pentium II and the requirements say it NEEDS a Pentium III.  Is this still compatible or will i have to look for another CD burner. If it isn't can anyone recommend another low COST cd/DVD burner.

I am based at Indore India ; My service provider has installed new Hard DISK having following specs :
Western Digital Hard Disk 40 GB ; Model WD400BB-OODKAO ;S No WMASL4214877 . This Hard disk was installed on my above referred Computer in 2nd fortnight of Jan 05 and has given way in 1st fortnight of this month after merely working of less than 9 calender months . The SYSTEM , on an average, is being used 25 HOURS a week . Incidentally , the CD installed earlier in yet ANOTHER computer P-200 was in second fortnight of Dec 03 which gave way in Jan 04 .
I would like to know [a] if both the Hard DISKS given to me by my service provider is original ? and what is the normal price for the Hard disc of this type , model .

When you mean service provider......do you mean an isp.....or the person that supplied you with the pc?.......is sounds like an old pc supplied.......

My CD-RW drive will BURN MUSIC files ONLY through Windows Media Player (using some applet thingy) but other than that my drive is non-responsive to anything CD-R/CD-RW. It won't give me an option for recording my data, pics etc i.e. I cannot RIGHT click to send files to the CD-RW drive neither can I drag and drop files to it ... it SAYS to insert a disc even if there is one already inserted. I'm not SURE why this is happening. I've searched and found no useful info. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated! You only need post this subject one time.I have windows XP, with all the updates current. I am using VERIZON dsl. I have the adaptor card and the bios on the card recognizes the drive but it doesn't show in my computer.I used to have a SCSI hard drive with the same issue.  Win2k would see it, WINXP would not.  See if it shows up in Disk Management.

Hello, I need help location the manufacturer of some generic PCs I bought from a school DISTRICT. There are no manufacturer name on the motherboards for me to find the drivers. I can dl windows but cant use devices without drivers for i.e. onboard lan/audio/etc. Can anyone help me?. The only numbers i can find are on white strip GLUED to BOARD READING EA=00D0092E846A. Does this MEAN anything?
