i am trying to fix this pc for my friend and when u power the computer up it says primary hard disk drive 0 not found . Alert! coverwas previously removed . f1 key to cotinue...when hit f1 c:/> comes up and u gotta type SOMETHING but i dunno what to type..thankz again i tried to push f2 for setup and got to it but couldnt do anything with it...any help and suggestions will be appreciated....i cant get into the windows or nothing...it doesnt let me go anywhereQuestions:

I'm having a problem with formatting my hard drive (using windows 98). When I type the command prompt (format c:/s) in MS-DOS and confirm that that is what I want to do, it TELLS me the c: drive is OCCUPIED by ANOTHER process. Hi, my problem is this.
I was given a computer for spares, I took out the hard drive, which was bigger and had some good SOFTWARE on it, and replaced it for my OLD one, which was broken. When I boot up, it says "windows has dectected new hardware and is locating the software for it. " then a wizard COMES up saying that it hasn't found them and asks me for the windows 98 CD. It asks for the following drivers:
PCI serial controller,
standard PCI graphics adapter (VGA),
PCI standard host CPU bridge.
Can anyone tell me where to get them from? possibly send them to me ?
also, sometimes it says "windows protection error, you must restart your computer" when windows loads.

I am at a complete loss.Windows 98 requires 3rd party drivers for video, MODEM, sound.  With make and model of computer, you can download drivers from the computer manufacturer's website.  If you have a no-name computer, you'll have to read the make and model number from the plug-in cards and download the drivers.

i have a problem. when i insert CD on my cd rw drive, it detects the cd but as a blank cd. but when i check the details there is no more free space. it happens to some of my cds but not to all. my question is if the problem is with my drive or with my cd. my cd's are fine, they are scratch free. my cd rw drive is LITEON LTR-52327S. pls, anybody?The real question here is... Are the CDs really blank? Have a look at those CDs to MAKE sure that they have INFORMATION on them... Also, when you say that only some CDs work... What kind of CDs are you using? Burnt CDs?

i've recently updated my OS from WinME to WINXP. i am now trying to setup my dialup internet connection again. i spoke to my service provider and i was told to update the modem driver. i've looked for the update on the HP website but i could not find one for the modem. do u where i can find the driver update for a Lucent Win Modem for XP?

Tell them Sidewinder sent you. Nothing on HP website about a modem for your computer.  If it works, then LEAVE it alone.  If it's not working, you'll have to remove it and read what's printed on the circuit board and/or the Lucent chip LOCATED on the board.i've TRIED the HP website,  but i've had no luck finding the driver for my computer. the modem was working before i installed WinXP. do u know how i can go about removing the modem so i can read what's printed on the circuit board and/or the Lucent chip located on the board?

I accidentaly disconnected the power supply from my cd rom and I dont know which power supply to plug in.  i have tried them all and then i get a message that says to PRESS f1 or f2 for upgrades or to skip them. computer doesnt respondangie kent.....My first question has to be .......How did you accidentaly disconnect the 4 PIN power supply to the cd-rom .
There should be several available 4 pin plugs which will do the job......make sure when you plug it in that the side of the plug which has the yellow wire in it is towards the OUTSIDE edge of the cd-rom .

I used system RESTORE and reinstalled everything again. The sound did work after i did this for a awhile and then it quit. So i looked in help and it told me to TAKE out the sound card and reinstall it. I did...it worked. For a while and stopped again. Help and support told me to take it out and put it in a different slot so I did, but it still doesn't work. Okay , in my device manager there is a USB device listed and it has a yellow exclamation point beside it... I don't know what this device is, it is only called USB device. It says that the conflict is a code 28 and that it can't find the driver. I have all my CD roms that came with my computer and have put everyone of them in the to see if it was the driver. How do I find out what driver it needs?  I have removed it hoping it was causing the conflict with my sound but no. Should I just get a new sound card?Ok. Before we look at the unknown device... Lets try this... GO to your sound card manufacturer's website, and download the LATEST drivers available for your card... Install them, and tell US about the outcome...

I just formatted my old computer which has Windows 98 on it, and it has a plug and play GATEWAY MONITOR.  After I formatted and reinstalled windows, I realized I could not set the resolution above 640x480, and i could only choose between 16-color and 2-color graphics.  Before formatting, I could choose from a list of resolutions, and a lot more colors than that.  I have the best driver installed from the Windows 98 CD, (or so it says), and I don't know what to do.  Thank you for your helpGo to your video card MANUFACTURER's WEBSITE and get a driver from them.  Windows 98 provides very limited drivers.Ok thank you

I recently got an old computer, and decided to install Windows 3.1... after playing a bunch of dos games
Well, I got 3.1, and realized that i could not get my mouse to WORK.  Ive tried many generic drivers, and all the ones that come with 3.1, none of them work.  Its a PC Accessories (9 pin) Serial Mouse.  I put it on my XP computer, to see if the THING actually WORKED, and it came up as Microsoft Serial Mouse, that hasnt helped in my driver search though.  ANy suggestions on how I can get this mouse WORKING?!You can get what you need at:

Hi all, I cannot play dvd's (have PowerDVD and WinDVD) on windows Me with PIII.

I get "error code 8090004 ASPI for windows not available!"

"Only 32-bit CD-ROM driver supported. Please make sure 32-bit CD-ROM driver installed."

I googled the error # then downloaded the Windows ASPI pack from adaptec.com. Installed it, rebooted and I still get the same error.    Untechie here, is it not PROPERLY installed or am I way off base? Any help will be much APPRECIATED.

i have some hard drives that DONT want to let me transfer files into them.  the hard drive that i use is getting full and i wanted to transfer FILE to my other hard drives.  the drives let me but then all of a sudden they dont let me transfer anymore files or TAKE out files from those hard drives.  if i try to transfer files into them they dont transfer and sometimes makes my computer FREEZE. can some ONE help?

i'm fixing a friends comp.  her brother installed win 98 se.  it put the standars pci graphics adapter instead of the right ONE.  my problem is, i have no documentation for the comp so i can't figure out what the card is.  i read through many of the posts on here and tried the dxdiag trick.  it said STANDARD pci graphics adapter.  i tried going to the device manager, same thing.  i tried going to system info, same thing.

anyone have any other suggestions?  i don't have internet access on her comp so i can't go that route.

i do know it's an older gateway, pIII, 64mb ram.  can't even FIND anything on gateway's site.

any HELP would be greatly appreciated.Does the device manager show that the drivers are installed and that the device is working properly?When you boot a computer the first thing that will show on the monitor is the video card information (even before you see processor or memory information).  So shut the computer down, then power it back on (don't do a restart), when something appears on the screen hit the PAUSE key on your keyboard and note the video information displayed on the monitor.

Hi I work off-line because I have no phone but was wondering if I there was a WAY that I could update drivers from another computer that was on line and then put them on MINE.  I have windows xp pro.  Plus is it POSSIBLE to connect a cassette player to my computer?Download drivers to "on-line" computer and transfer them to "off-line" computer via floppy disk, CD, or whatever.  Connect cassette player audio-out jack to computer sound card audio-in jack.So it can be done!  Thanks very very much for your input.

I recently purchased a LaCie D2 DVD RW burner and have attempted to install it.  However when it is plugged in Windows says that it has found a new hardware device and opens up an installation wizard.  It cannot find the driver for the device anywhere.  I have tried to search the CD for the driver and search the drivers folder all to no avail.  Also useless was installing the Win98 USB2.0 driver included on the installation CD.  I am running Windows XP Professional (it is an system upgraded from the originally installed XP Home).  I would APPRECIATE any help.  Thanks.

~Black WolffDid you check the manufacturer's web site for updated drivers and/or updated installation instructions?Yes I did, the only thing they had was the Windows 98 USB2.0 driver that I'd already installed.  They repeatedly say that with XP you shouldn't need any drivers.  I've had this happen before with a USB memory stick (but not on my desktop running XP Home) and so I've wondered if it was perhaps caused by my installation of XP Pro several months ago.

~Black WolffI plugged the drive into my brother-in-law's laptop and it installed perfectly without any action needed on my part.  This is what my computer refuses to do!  It says that it needs to search for the driver.  I wonder if my XP library of drivers has somehow been DELETED.  When the drive is installed on the other laptop it is recognized in the device manager as "_NEC DVD_RW ND-3520A USB Device"

*sigh*  I tried seeing what FILES were associated with its driver and copying them to my computer but I've not had any luck with this yet.

i am having problems with my sound card. IVE posted here before and unfortunately have not found an answer. The problem is that my sound card works fine when watching .avi or .mpeg etc movies. However when i try to watch .wmv or .asf FILES they make a really high pitch squelling noise. Ive updated my drivers, reinstalled the software and done everything else imaginable. Now i was going to buy a new sound card but recently i thought i would burn the files onto a dvd and watch them on my tv and dvd player. If it was a computer problem wouldnt it work in ona dvd player? On the other hand it couldnt possibly be every wmv file ive downloaded could it? Id really appreciate any HELP from anyone cause this is driving me crzy.

I am CURRENTLY using windows XP and my video card is an ATI Radeon 7500. After downloading the most recent ATI driver update, my screen went black after the reboot.    I've tried uninstalling the drivers and going back to the old ones, but that hasn't worked.  I've also tried getting the most recent windows XP updates, but again nothing has worked.   i'm currently running in safe mode and its REALLY starting the BUG me!!!

Any ideas on what i can do?Try a system restore... Click Start -> All programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System restore... Revert back to the DAY before you installed the drivers...

any more suggestions?First go to Device Manager and remove ATI entry for Display Adapter.  WinXP should plug 'n play a WinXP drive that should work in Normal Mode.  Then install ATI driver.

Just a thought, seeing as I know little about your setup, it could be that your settings are too high for your monitor to handle them, thus giving you a black screen. You should try lowering them in Safe Mode to see if that helps. Then just PLAYING with the settings until you find one you like that your monitor can handle.

I'm not saying this is your problem, I've just seen this a couple of times and the above was the solution. Hope this helps.

Can someone help? Friday we had a transformer go in our area and we lost power. I was on the NET at the time and when power and phones were restored I can not get a dial tone on my modem. I have tried everything and some and still no luck. Has anyone had this problem? Everything other then the no dial tone is fine. Help me, PLEASE.Personally, I think that you need to use a cell phone or something, and call your phone provider for help, but only if this is an advanced issue... What happens if you try to use your computer to dial out? Do you get an error, or a busy signal, etc.?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Actually I've sponken to Verizon (my provider) they feel the issue is terminal as well as AOL and Gateway (which they were no help at all, my warrenty expired) I was told to reload my drivers and it should be ok but no luck. I do not get a dial tone when I try to CONNECT I can hear it dialing and that's all, I get an error stating no ANSWER or the other....Kinda looks like my modem is fried huh?That is a possibility... You said that your house phones were out too, right?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Friend, first of all make sure that your phone line is working properly. Sceondly, make sure that all connections are tight specially if you have extension and also phone connected to your modem is properly connected. If every thing is fine and your modem still causing problem of "no dial tone", then I think, I am sory to say that you must arrange new modem. Before buying new one check your modem on some other PC and try to change your modem slot on your motherboard.

DrWahabHi two things you can do 1. REINSTALL the modem,2.if that dose not work then replace the modem but it sounds like you modem has shorted out. The cost to replace is not much at all here in Australia I can BUY a modem for $20.00 Quote

My problem is this , while connected online i will often have an error MESSAGE pop up saying "us robotics driver interface has encountered a problem and will close" after this i am stuck online and going nowhere  
As far as i know my modem is a us robotics 56k

I got a brand new hp computer a few days AGO and now my cd drive is not working. The OFFICIAL name for it is "LightScribe DL 16X DVD +/-R/RW drive". It can play DVDs but it can't read instalation CDs, music CDs, or burned Cds. I thought it may be that it just wasn't clean but it can't even read one of those CDs you put in to clean the drive. So, anybody know what I can do?If it is a brand new computer then you need to call the manufacturer's support line or the place you bought it from.  No point in fooling around with it SINCE it must still be under warranty.

I just formatted because windows wudnt boot so i have to reinstall all my stuff again and i went to download and install the nvidia driver i NEED for my 32mb tnt 2 GRAPHICS card and theirs an ERROR, as i go to install it comes up as ERROR!:

I just purchased the Sony PSP.  When I plug into the USB to download MP3 files it doesn't show that  the PSP is there (removeable DRIVE).  It shows up on "Devices" as Unknown device and no drivers are available.  It should be able to just Plug and Play without installing any software.  This also happens with my digital camera.  I purchased a new USB CARD thinking that WOULD help but still get the same PROBLEM.  I am running Win98.  :-/What does the Sony help site say about this?Absolutely nothing.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 widescreen laptop.  The drivers that came with it aren't great, because no matter what resolution I use, the images in IE are fuzzy and out of proportion.  Pictures look perfect and crisp when I open them from my hard drive, but any in IE they just look terrible.

I've found updated drivers that correct this, but the problem is that if I restart my COMPUTER, the drivers revert back to how they were before.  I follow the diections just fine, uninstalling the original drivers, installing the new ones, and restarting my computer so that they'll take effect.  I've done this three times and it the drivers just keep reverting back.  It's slowly driving me insane and I can't find any SORT of help or answers anywhere.  Any help or advice would be GREATLY appreciated.Miranda,

Check the manual that came with your laptop.  There is a native resolution that your laptop (and all flat panel MONITORS) wants to run at.  Make sure you are running at that resolution and see if that doesn't fix your problem.

I have seen many people try to not use the native resolution and you will normally get fuzzy images in DIFFERENT places.

It's a longshot, but I'm PIECING TOGETHER a computer from a bunch of old scraps, the video card being one of them.  Unfortunately the manufacturer no longer exists (I think it GOT BOUGHT out by a company named Zoran).  I need the driver, but don't know how I can retrieve it now that the company no longer exists.  Does anyone have any ideas?  Thanks!http://www.driverguide.com

I recently received a motherboard from one of my friends with an 80 gig hard drive as the main drive. I decided to switch to my old hard drive which is 20 gigs, so i can have all my desktop settings and so forth. I made sure the settings in the Bios were right but the PC wont start up AFTERWARDS. It immediatly shuts off right after the RAM check(screen turns off). I made sure it saw the 20 gig as the main drive(yes i remmembered to make the other 80 gig a slave drive) but yet it still will not boot up. Is the problem that i over looked something in the bios? Or is it the TYPE of motherboard I used? Please email or im me(Dntmesswtheryman) or just POST the answers under this topic. I'll take all the help i can get get.

Hi I have a similar problem to someone earlier: I have INSTALLED XP and get no sound on boot or shutdown, but do have sounds once it is booted up. I have been told I need the motherboard chipset drivers. I have looked inside, and I see 'HP' and 'P48 MX'. I have TRIED google, but to no AVAIL. I BOUGHT a crappy digital CAMERA for vacation use so not to wreck my GOOD one.. prob is I left the CD to install it.. Bought a Dell Latitude C600 from eBay.  Installed Win 2000 and a wireless card.  Everything is cool.  But, the desktop is a small square in the middle, doesn't cover the whole 15".  Help?Either you installed the wrong video driver....or

You are running at the wrong resolution.
Laptops support very specific video resolutions and anything outside this range will give you odd results like you are seeing.

I'm sure you're right about installing the wrong driver.  But can you tell me the right one to install -where to find it?

Many thanks!Dell computers have service tags on them somewhere, normally the bottom on a laptop.  Find the service tag, go to support.dell.com, enter the service tag there and it will tell you what it SHIPPED with and what drivers you need.  The site also has the drivers there for you to download.  You can also GET system manual downloads, etc.Thanks!!! Their web support is the best I've seen.  I can still find the original system specs for individual computers they shipped 10 years ago and drivers too.Wow! Now that's support!    gateway makes you LOOK for your yourself... They actually have no idea which driver you are SUPPOSED to use... Dangerous, huh? lol

ThanksI answered your question in the WINDOWS board. Each time you seem to GIVE out a little more info. Error Code 10 means you need to update your DRIVERS. ALSO the fact that the IDE devices have exclamation marks, shows that you also have resource conflicts, check your IRQ USAGE.

i just finished installing windows XP pro.i upgraded from windows 98.now i cant use my dvd player or burn cds.i tried USING media player 10.wont detect cd burner or even play dvds.i cant use my original dvd player either.whats the most simple way to fix this? anyone please help. thank you.Have you tried RUNNING a Windows Update since you installed XP? The D: Drive isn't working. The light is on and a disk can be inserted with no problem. SHOWS no D: Drive. Checked DEVISE manager and it shows it is installed and shows no problems. Can you tell me how to SETUP D:Drive?

or re-boot pc and hold the f8........black screen appears WOW..........options...........mel chose the last good CONFIG...and see if it re-appears if not the patch^ above may help you!^......I TAKE it the d drive is dvd/cdom.......drive..Thanks Merl I'll see what happens and get back with you.

Am trying to install HP Deskjet 630c printer and it KEEPS telling me this driver is not digitally signed. I just put WINDOWS xp on the computer. What does this mean and can I get help? I am not very computer literate and any help would greatly appreciated. Many thanks Paula."Not digitally signed" means Microsoft have not TESTED this driver and verified it to be compatible with Win XP.  This does not mean it will not work, you should click on the "continue anyway" to install your PRINT driver.  If this is a concern you should check the HP web site for newer driver tested by MS.

In an effert to save money, I attempted to FIX my computer myself by reinstalling Win XP Pro. The problems are gone, but now so are my modem and sound card drivers. So I opened up the computer to look at the modem and got " CNR V1.2 (WO4M) SR1"  

Now I'm not great with computers, and a LOT of this stuff is lost on me (but I'm learning ) I tryed looking around for the RIGHT DRIVER, and I can't seem to figure out which one I need...or HOW to install it for that MATTER...

Any help would be much appriciated

My computer has WINDOWS 98. The hardware profile lists  the CD drive as a NEC CD-ROM:28D.     A MITSUMI CD ROM controller with double SPEED drive is shown as the driver, HOWEVER, the driver is flagged in the hardware profile as being defective. The CD-ROM will not run a CD when installed;however the CD-ROM can be started by going through  "Start" "Run" D:\** . I cannot find a listing for this CD-ROM: 28D.  Can someone advise as to what driver is CORRECT for this unit.

This may sound like a stupid question but i'll ask ANYWAY. I bought a new PC at christmas and didnt realise it didnt have a floppy DRIVE ( i thought all comps had one!!??). I was wondering if it is possible to install one and if this is possible would i need to get a floppy drive made from the same company as my computer which is a HP. Also what would be the best floppy drive to get an internal or external drive?
Thanx a bunch.Floppy drives (now sometimes referred to as legacy drives) are options now days, not standard equipment.

If you feel you will need to boot from the floppy drive at some point they you will need an internal one, if not, then either will do.

Any brand of internal floppy drive should work just fine in your computer, you just need to make sure you have an OPEN bay to install it in.

Of course all of this assumes you are talking about a desktop computer not a laptop.

I am putting together a pc in my home to act as a desktop and server.  three other pc's in the home will be networked and with important files stored on the network DRIVES.  I run an accounting business which files are extremely sensitive and SEVERAL photoshop  and video files.

The case is an ATX form factor, I have had thoughts of getting a raid controller because of the benefits of mirroring and INCREASING speed.   I have not purchased the motherboard and processor  - Will the p4 motherboard support anything higher than raid 1 or do I have to a server set up?  What would you do?I recommend Promise raid controllers. Depending on the degree of speed and data protection REQUIRED, select a model that gives you exactly what you want. STRIPPED arrays provide the best speed, mirrored arrays the best data protection. With some controllers you can use both. I personally use the mirrored raid, since for me speed is not tantamount.

We were given a used computer, CHECKED it for any problems, none found.  The computer is HP 2.6 G processer, 40 Gig HardDrive, 512 RAM.  

Have tried to install Windows XP Pro several times but each time we install, we find that in the System Properties, under Device Manager in the cat. "other devices" the Ethernet controller, Multimedia Audio Controller, Universal serial Bus (USB) Controller, and the Video Controller (VGA compatible are missing and show up with a big yellow question mark.  

We have tried to find the DRIVERS and controllers on our other pc to download onto disks and seperatly install them but that doesn't work either.

We have tried everything we know how but cannot get these drivers or controllers to install.  

Any suggestions?  Please help!I would format it and reinstall your operating system.

Thanks Sandra,  but we've tried refromating more than once but each time we install the Windows XP Pro, same results, missing controllers.  That MAKES it impossible to hook up to the internet, among other things.

I'm wondering if there is something on the hard drive that we have missed, or couldl possibly be blocking the full installation?I thought that would have fixed it, maybe your hard drive is DAMAGED, maybe you need anew one, the expert guys are great on here i'm sure they will come up with something.

Go to bootdisk.com and download the CORRECT version of xp boot disc's and install from there. There are 6 floppys that will install all necessary drivers for an easy install of xp. Quote
