Solve : I really dont know what to do (Hard Disk Drive)?

Answer»

I dont know and even the tech guys at the company i bought it at know so here it goes:
I just bought a new computer and i turned it on and everything was FINE. BUT then it just turned off and when i turned it on it didnt get to startup.  it just said "cannot FIND a start up file" its corrupt or missing.  so i put the xp disk in and it went to the setup and went fine but when it was finishing it said that it cant find the hard drive and stopped INSTALLING.  this is all before the stage where you can use your mouse in the black screen with white writing stage.  so my conclusion is that the computer cannot find or doesnt recognise the hard drive.  please help me, i have TRIED everything i can think of.Friend make sure that your Hard Disk jumper settings are set to "Master", Secondly all connections must be tight. Thirdly change the power supply cale of you hard disk. If problem persist, TRY to change data cable of your hard disk.
Hope this will solve your problem.
Take care of you and others and be happy.
Bye...
DrWahabHi It could be the hard drive is faulty, and check your cable there are two types around that is the IDE cable the hard drive cable should be 80 ribbon not the 40 ribbon. Is the hard drive the only one connected with the cable? If it is only drive connected  with that  cable make the jumper is set to master the two pins nearest to the IDE cable.

Solve : Lost driver and hardware details?

Answer»

Hello,

I decided to format my hard drive. Before doing this I did a little checklist and saved things I thought I needed. I didn't put any device drivers onto disc because I KNEW I already had them on a disc. So, I can't find the box, the driver CD or any information what so EVER about my VIDEO card. My question is SIMPLY, 'where do I go from here?' :-/

I can't remember the model or anything about it. Can anyone help?If you can go into safe mode with networking (internet), then try downloading your drivers from the internet... (video card manufacturer's website)

[glb]Flame[/glb]Thanks but it was so long ago since I bought it, I can't even remember the manufacturer. Is there any way I can get the manufacturer and model from the card even though it's only being recognised as a 'vga' in windows device manager? I opened up the PC before to see if anything's on the card but I couldn't discern a manufacturer. The first thing that loads on your PC, before the hard drives even, is the video card.  You should be able to see this information on your monitor almost immediately after pushing the power button.Ah, now that you mention it, I thought I saw something before when I started her up but didn't think anything of it because the drivers weren't installed. Thanks, I'll have a look-see now.Yep, got it now. Nvidia Geforce 4 it was. Thanks for the help.

Solve : Soundblaster Live! installation?

Answer»

I've installed the Soundblaster Live! Digital card that came with my DELL on my mom's OLD HP Pavilion.  It runs Windows 98 SE.  I can't seem to install a functioning driver.  If I use the add hardware wizard, it can't find one that works, and if I select the SBLive driver from the list, it said the driver wasn't made specifically for the hardware, even though it really should be, and then it doesn't work.  If I go to system and look at the device manager, the installed sound blaster driver says it has a PROBLEM.  I've tried as many of the executable packages of the drivers that Creative's site has offered as possible, and none of them work.  The one that looks like it might work says it doesn't detect a soundblaster live card on my system, so install will now close.  So yeah.  Any help?Card is not compatable with hardware!Go to the card web-site and READ the requirements!I couldn't find them.Try looking at  HTTP://come.to/sblive  the Aps drivers are v stable in 98se. They are not supported by creative but I've never had any problems. Good luck

Solve : USB to serial cable won't work, any suggestions??

Answer»

I have this USB to serial cable, and I simply can't get it to work on my vista PC. Seems like such an EASY plug, play, install and run device. Anyway.... I installed the latest drivers off their website, then plugged in the usb to serial cable to my pc. Drivers seemed to install without any problem. But then the IDE program I use wouldn't communicate with it properly. I borrowed a (different brand) usb-serial cable from a friend, it installed within 2 minutes and was working without any issues and connection worked just fine

So I then uninstall the drivers for my pc, and then unplug the original cable (the one I own) then after replugging in and rebooting, reinstallation occurred as expected and I am soon presented with the following screenshot:

Device Manager tell me this:

and next to the appropriate icon in the device manager list, yellow exclamation mark error symbol appear.

Does ANYBODY know what is wrong? Seems like INF file is broken, but I got no clue

NOTE: I tried the prolific drivers software off disc that came with cable, then found that their official website had newer version so tried that. I ended up as described above. Also, the associated inf file(s) are attached in case anybody can figure out why this cable not working (had to save content as txt files, as CH apparently hates inf filetypes)

[recovering disk SPACE - old attachment deleted by admin]Did you install the correct driver for 32 bit if 32 bit os or 64 bit if your system is 64bit? Most drivers will complain during install if incorrect. Also did you get a warning stating that the driver is not signed or did it install clean originally without any complaints?Given that you just bought the item have you tried to talk to the manufacturer's tech support? This may be a known issue to them. Given that another brand of the same cable does work it sure sounds like a compatibility issue with something on your computer. truenorthAlready got my money refunded by the seller, whom I bought the cable. I decided to use the other cable that I borrowed from my friend and tested to be working. MY friend tested the cable that wasn't working on my pc with his pc and he says it works fine for him. So basically, now I have swapped cables and both pc's are happy.

Still wondering why it isn't an easy install when it should be, but anyway all is fine now.

Solve : need sidewinder dual strike driver for XP.?

Answer»

I'm addicted to the sidewinder dual strike game controller.  Unfortunately, I'm one of the few as it never CAUGHT on.  The last driver was WRITTEN for W98.  I'm TOLD Microsoft temporarily released an XP driver not too long AGO but withdrew it without explanation.  I hope SOMEONE can e-mail me that driver.  Thanks.

Solve : 7 & camera problem?

Answer»

While this is not directly a computer PROBLEM - it is indirectly at least.  I bought a new laptop employing Microsoft 7.  I have a 3 year old Fuji FinePix S700 Camera but it's software require a new 64 bit driver which Fuji TELLS me they can't supply - only 32 bit.
Does anyone have a clue where I might obtain such a driver?

Thanks,
Bill.Nobody will have a clue, because there won't be a 64 bit driver in existence. If Fuji, the camera manufacturer,  can't supply a 64 bit driver, what makes you think anybody else can? Depending on which version of "Microsoft 7" you have, (I presume you mean Windows 7) you may be able to install XP Mode and use a 32 bit driver in that. You need either Professional or Ultimate. Anything less won't do. Anyhow, why don't you just take out the memory card and put it in a USB card reader?
I don't understand why you needed a driver for your camera to work on Windows OS earlier or current. The CD software(Finepixviewer) that came with S700 camera is what you need to transfer or view files using a USB cable. Also a recent update version 5.5 for Finepixviewer is available for Win 7/Vista/XP/2000 is available.
See here-> http://www.fujifilm.com/support/digital_cameras/software/finepix_viewer/index.html#windows5.5I have a Fuji FinePix 2650 and it's much older than your S700.  I've connected my camera to my Win 7 system and transferred PHOTOS without installing any photo software other than what's already in Win 7.  So, I BELIEVE you should be able to transfer photos without having any of Fuji's software installed.

Exactly what happens when you connect your camera?  Open your Computer screen.  Does your camera appear there as a Removable Disk?  It should, and you can then just open the photos in Windows Explorer and copy them to your hard drive. Quote from: wilmsp on March 09, 2011, 03:04:06 PM

...but it's software...

You don't need the software included with many USB devices, at least not for anything newer then Windows 98SE; most devices identify as a "class" of USB devices; for example a camera tells the computer it's a camera, a thumb drive says "I'm a storage device" and all modern OS's know how to communicate with devices of each class. Camera's are sometimes different; for example when I plug in my Samsung L100, the computer doesn't detect it at all unless the camera is on (not surprising) but I also have to choose a option on a menu that the camera presents: I need to choose wether it's connecting to a Computer or to a Printer.

This is somewhat important since not all camera's present the option; with "Computer" it shows up as a standard MASS storage device- I cannot use it as a camera or webcam, for example; it isn't detected as one, merely as a hard drive.

When I say "printer" however, the camera "connects" as if it was a camera, and supports camera-like actions like Picture Transfer Protocol and pictbridge. I assume it would be usable as a webcam but the camera connects and disconnects constantly so I can't find out much more about it then Windows 7 stating it found a Digital Camera constantly.

This is somewhat relevant here because some older cameras don't support use as a Mass storage device; even certain models in a line might not, and in those cases they would need the "special software" to be used. I doubt that is the case here; they almost always show up or can be made to show up as mass storage devices, and worst case scenario means you would need a Card reader to read the SD card (or whatever the camera happens to use). Unless of course the camera happens to be old enough to use a Serial or Parallel cable... in which case best of luck!
I must quickly apologize to thoe who responded to this post for having not replied sooner.  I haven't posted for a year or two and was on the understanding an email informed you when you had a reply.  I must have missed something.  Anyway, I downloaded IrvanView and with my camera plugged in it picks them up.  Then as a UBC connected device. find my camera included  as a Portable Device and by clicking on the icon, I am able to view my current shots on the camera.  Great! -  BUT there appears to be no way to save them even individually.  So, I am only halfway out of the woods.  Any further suggestions?  And, again thanks for the previous suggestions.

Bill.Find the drive letter in Windows Explorer and open the drive and copy or move the image files. Or else remove the card and put it in a card reader.

Solve : dvd-rw/dvd-ram?

Answer»

three different products
Ok its WMP as Win XP software by a Divx file(s). http://www.ehow.com/how_6375679_convert-divx-burn-dvd.htmlok, problem is, I have a 4.7GB dvd-rw disc. It has 699MB of space loaded on to it. I want to clear the disc so I can record another file onto it. I place the disc in the driver which is a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H12N. I open My Computer and the drive description is DVD-RAM Drive(D:) I left click on it and select Erase this cd. I have carried out this procedure several times with success. The PC starts the process but then a window opens stating that it is UNABLE to carryout this function. In the Properties box it shows free space as "0" and used space as "0" But does read the disc as DVD-RAW. This happens whenever I use a rewrite or write once disc and with different files loaded on them. I downloaded the Nero DVD manager and I am able to read the amount of space on the disc and erase it without any problem. I can only deduce that the problem is with the windows software which came with the computer. The Nero is on a free trial at the moment and I was hoping to get the this problem sorted prior to expiry. The Windows Media Player and the Drag n' drop came with the PC. I downloaded Dvix for the AVI FACILITY. The WMP will not "burn" now. It just keeps asking me to "Insert Blank Disc" which I think is related to the software problem.
However there is something else going on which the local PC doctor was bewildered about, and that was, when I try and open any File or video a DEP (Data Execution Prevention)window opens and wants to close the program even though the file is 100% safe. I have traced the DEP location and there does not appear to be any settings and I think turning it off is too risky. Sorry for the short novel but things seem to be going off at a tangent.   I have done a serch for DEP problems on this sight and found some very useful information and I hope the DEP situation is now under control and also took the advice to make sure my Spybot was active. Thanks for the info. Quote

Borrow a Nero CD installer from people you know. If there are settings you could have changed before the WMP errors then you should have known what to undo to correct the problem. Thanks for help. There seems to be a notable improvement in performance since ADJUSTING the DEP and running Spybot. The DVD burning/erasing APPEARS to have solved it's SELF since using the Nero software.

Solve : What does this in my tray mean??

Answer» SAFELY Remove ST325031 0AS SCSI DISK DEVICE - DRIVES (D:, C:)

Also my gadget guy had to come out here the other day.

The problem: My CPU would come on but not the monitor. It wouldn't even come on. My initial THOUGHT was, a shot v-card. But when the guy got here and opened up my girl here, he did something to the battery.

After he left, I NOTICED that a select few sites were taking forever to load, even with my dial up connection. And no, they didn't take that long before. When I say long, I mean long; more than being on hold wth Verizon long.

My question: If this happens again, will my machine need a need battery, or to be replaced, or what?  I have had this machine since march of '08.

Thanks!

Solve : SCSI CD Rom Device with IDE Hard Disk Drive conflicting??

Answer»

Hi there

The reason I'm asking this question is I have just brought some new PC Games (Mass Effect 1 and 2) and every time I insert the disc to begin installation my computer fails to read the CD, the tray freezes up, the CD ROM light stays on and I cannot even shutdown my computer. I have to manually turn off and then at system start up I am then able to remove the CD from the Drive.

I have just reinstalled some older games (Company of Heroes/Elder Scrolls/Imperium Galactium) and had no issues at all in getting a Disc read and FULL install with those games.

This is very frustrating because if my computer has no problem reading these discs then why would there be an ISSUE with the new discs?

My Hard Disk Drive is a: ST3200822AS which is listed as an IDE interface and my CD Rom Drive is a: ASUS DRW-2014L1 SCSI which obviously is listed as an SCSI interface. Could that be causing a possible conflict?

I haven't been able to locate any update drivers for my CD Rom device, I also ran the Device Manager install updates option and was informed that I was running the latest drivers. I've tried surfing the web using Google with my CD Rom Drive name, didn't get any hits relating to other people having trouble with disc reads, so I have now stumbled onto this site in my hopes for a possible explanation or even a 'fix' to my dilemma =P

Basic system info is:

Windows XP Professional
SP3
RAM 4GB
Radeon HD 4800
ATI High Def Audio

Please let me know if you want to see any other or more detailed system specs

Thanks in advance
  Quote

From reading our post, it is not a hardware or driver or system problem.  Your CD-ROM is working fine.

The problem is with the new games you have. Either the discs are defective or they have a draconian copy protection scheme. You did buy original discs, right? The copy protection does not allow SCSII drives. Don't ask me how I know. I am making a guess. There is a strong reason for my guess.Hi and thanks for the quick reply.

As far as I know they are perfectly legitimate discs, I brought them from a reputable gaming company brand new out of the box.

Good to know there are no conflict issues with my set up. I'll get onto the company I brought them from and see what they have to say.

Thanks againIt isn't a SCSI drive. The fact that it is listed as such by the OS is a quirk. It is either IDE or SATA (That model was available for either interface) I suspect defective disks.
Theres also the possibility that the CD laser is fine but the DVD laser is shot...
This would explain why older games still load up...

To test this try a factory Movie DVD in there...

Yes. installing drivers often changes the resolution. At which point you can change it back yourself in display properties. BCP , this is the download that changes everything

...BTW: I still do need chipset driver if my computer has an exclamation mark next to "SM Bus Controller", right?
Yes.  SMBus (System Management Bus) controller will allow for real-time hardware monitoring, i.e. cpu temps, fan rpm's
The drivers were hard to find, because they weren't listed under Motherboards.  Used nVidia "search", & it was the 5th listing.

I THOUGHT nTune was only for graphics cards.  It certainly won't work on a motherboard without the SMBus driver.
That's not a very old computer, 2007?Oh wait... So I need SM Bus Controller to be installed if I want to get that chipset thing working?
I thought installing chipset driver installs SM Bus Controller as well.

Well. There's a sticker that says the computer was purchased in 2003. I think that's wrong because my machine seems to ancient.Well, I need to fix that exclamation mark next to SM Bus Controller under My Computer > Properties> Hardware> Device manager.

How can I do it?Bumping this because I really need help.I got it fixed. Thanks.

Solve : Bought a new 1TB hard drive but my computer only recognizes 58GB??

Answer»

My hard DRIVE crashed so I went out and bought a new (and bigger) one.  I went through the system restore with the recovery discs without any problems, but now when I open the My Computer folder, the total storage space between the C: drive and D: drive is only 58GB!  Did I miss some crucial step in the system restore?  Does anyone have any experience with this problem?  I thought there was a chance it was just DISPLAYING the wrong amount of storage space, but I tried to install a game and it told me I didn't have enough space for it.

This is my first time posting, so if I didn't provide some needed information LET me know!

Thanks guys!  This site is wonderful, it's great that people that know how to fix computers would give some of their time to those of us less knowledgeable!
The remainder of the space is "unallocated", you have to grow (resize) the partition.
Vista allows you to shrink or extend the partition:  http://www.vistarewired.com/2007/02/16/how-to-resize-a-partition-in-windows-vista
If Vista won't do it, use this:  http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htmWhat the OP describes sounds like a known issue(s).
But to correctly answers his question, he needs to provide some more information about the model numbers of both the drive and the computer.
His OS is:
Windows Vista Home Premium
But has it been keep up to date?
When was the drive manufactured? Click Start and type diskmgmt.msc in the search box and press enter. This will open disk management. Disk management will show all of the drives connected to your computer. In the bottom pane, your hard drive should show up as Disk 0. RIGHT click on the partition and choose Extend Volume. Here are explicit information from WD. For mature viewers only. **

Solve : How to add PC computer drivers if no internet installed??

Answer»

I got my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop a few years ago, and it never came with a set of drivers...

The other day it got some viruses so we sent it to get repaired, and they cleared the WHOLE computer...

I had to reinstall the Microsoft programs, but sound, internet etc do NOT work...

How to I reinstall the computer drivers if I do not have internet?

THANK YOU SO MUCH
Your help is appreciated!

Download the drivers from the Dell Website on a different computer, save them to usb drive or cd and transfer them to the laptop, then install them.Or alternatively depending on what your service (technician) agreed would be the state of your repaired computer GIVEN back to you it may be possible to have them reintroduce the software that has been deleted and not reinstalled. I would call them and explain your issue and ASK them if they can ASSIST you. Hopefully at no further cost. The absent items are very critical (as you undoubtedly know) for your full use and enjoyment of your computer. truenorth

Solve : Media Files Disappeared?

Answer»

My system is:  HP Pavilion DV 9500 Notebook PC/ AMD Turion 64X2 mobile tech TL 58   1.90 GHZ/ RAM 1.00 GB/ Vista/ FREE AVG anti-virus

My C Drive says I have only 5.95 GB free out of 140 GB

I recall a window opening saying I was RUNNING out of memory on my hard drive and would need to de-frag or free up some memory.  I restarted the computer and noticed my background had disappeared as had all my media files( photos, music, videos).  However when I went to the tab on the start menu marked, "Recently Viewed", I could pull up a photo but if I went to the folder where it was located my computer shows the folder as empty.  I tried system restore with no luck outside of my background reappearing but in the folder where that file was located it shows no files.  I don't believe any of the files were deleted as the amount of free memory has not decreased.  I hope this is enough information.  Thanks for your help.  Try using defraggler and see if it helps http://www.piriform.com/defraggler. But free up some space first by BACKING up certain files and alternately you could use Ccleaner on the same link and check if out of memory error still PERSIST. Quote

de-frag or free up some memory.  I restarted the computer and noticed my background had disappeared as had all my media files( photos, music, videos).

You mean you restarted during the defragmentation. If you did, then you probably have a currupt filesystem.
Boot to a WINDOWS CD and enter recovery console. Run chkdsk /rIf in fact you do only have 6G free out of 140G things aren't gonna run well regardless...
Time to do some housekeeping and learn some file management principles. Quote from: wallywalrus on April 27, 2011, 02:48:10 PM

Not quite.  It said "running out of space" (not memory) & "free up space" (not memory).
Hard disk space & memory are not the same thing.

Solve : BIOS Updating Dell Dimension 8200?

Answer»

I have a 2002 Dell Dimension 8200 running a Pentium 4, 2.4GHz CPU W/ 256MB of RDRAM and an Intel 850E chipset; the BIOS is Dell Version A07.  I'm going to upgrade the memory to 2GB and the CPU to 3.06GHz. but I've been advised to update the BIOS before doing so.  The Dell Support website reflects only one newer version of its BIOS for the 8200 Series, that being A09, released 10/29/2002, about a month after my PC was built.  I downloaded the new BIOS version to a USB drive (File Description: BD820009), but now I'm getting nervous as I've pretty much reached the limit of my expertise, and could really use some help...and I don't feel like paying $59.95 for one of Dell's "off shore" out-of-warrantee technical assistance specialists.

So, how does one go about this?  Do I just boot up and RUN the file from Windows XP (by the way, I'm on SP2 as I don't even have enough memory to get SP3 to update), or does this have to be done from DOS?  Any other pitfalls I should be aware of?  Oh, did I mention that this is a "second" system, not my primary connection to the ether?  I bought this for my daughter when she went off to college at CalPoly in 2002.  When she came back in 2006 she dropped off the PC and got herself a laptop, claiming the 8200 was "junk".  I'm trying to get a couple more years out of it so my wife will stop fighting me over keyboard time.   The normal way is to follow the instructions.
When you start the program it asks for a floppy disk.
You insert a good floppy that has already been formatted.
The programs writes a 'image' to the floppy.
You restart the system and let it boot the floppy.
The floppy program with dash the BIOS and let you know when it is done. You remove the disk and reboot.
Basically, that is how you do it.
Why are you updating the BIOS, especially if you're unsure of yourself?
There are some non-critical fixes:The following changes have been made to the A08 BIOS to create A09:
1. Fixed resource allocation to some PCI devices when multiple adapters
with bridges are in the system.
2. Properly set system power state when AC Power is lost in S3.
3. Added additional system board information into SMBIOS type 2 structure.
4. Fixed possible hang when EXITING Diagnostic programs that access KB
ports directly and USB Emulation is On.
5. Fixed possible issue with the Date and Time being changed after
consecutive reboots.
6. Added new SMBIOS token definitions for UDMA, Hard Disk Acoustic, S1/S3.

You must follow the instructions that Dell provides:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&deviceid=308&libid=1&releaseid=R49451&vercnt=7&formatcnt=0&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_8200&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=-1&dateid=-1&typeid=-1&formatid=-1&impid=-1&checkFormat=trueAs I stated in my original post, I had been told that I should update the BIOS if I'm going to upgrade the CPU and/or memory.  As for the suggestion that I follow the Dell instructions for updating BIOS Version A08 to A09, how does this apply to my situation?  I also stated in my post that I am running on Version A07.  The Dell website doesn't even list a Version A08 for my particular Dimension 8200 series PC, just A09.  Unless you are having a problem which relates to any of the fixes, it is not NECESSARY to update the BIOS, especially to add memory.  To add memory, consult here:  http://www.crucial.com/index.aspxI know that the BIOS need not be updated if the only upgrade is to the memory.  However, I am also upgrading the CPU from 2.4GHz to 3.06GHz, and I have been told by the vendor (MemoryPig.com) that I should update the BIOS prior to installing the new processor.  Can you help me out here with a step-by-step procedure to accomplish this?  So far, I have created a bootable disk from using the "Win 98 se custom no ramdrive" from the menu.  Then, I downloaded the file D820009.exe from

I did all this on instructions from my regular, San Francisco-based, computer guru who's been keeping me "connected" for the past 10 years.  Unfortunately, she's on business in China (looking for new business) and has been sending me emails from her cell phone.  The last thing she told me was this:
"PS> if you don't know what you are doing, please don't update the bios or else, it's might be damage the chipset, make your mainboard can't boot up."  Her English isn't so good, but she's always done well by me, otherwise.  I'd take the PC in to her when she gets back from China, but I moved to Lakewood, WA two years ago, so that's not really a practical option. You are about to take advice from MemoryPig......think about it... Would like to know please when updating your drivers, how do you check on win xp which drivers is out of date? And on the manufacturer website how do you know which is the latest version? After downloading the update do you have to delete the old version then? Many thanksThere is no such thing as an out of date driver. Drivers should only be updated if there is a specific need or reason to do so. Are you experiencing any issues? Is it not necessary to update your drivers regularly to keep your pc running at its best?NoIf i WANT to ASK you about dll errors ect where should i do it?The best PLACE to POST would be in the correct OS forum (XP, Vista, Windows 7). But don't worry, if you post in the wrong forum we'll move it for youPlease help me i am looking for great websites where i can learn all about pc repair. Solve : touchpad help?

Answer»

i have an emachine e627 with windows 7 on it. my touchpad works but the scroll bar on the side hasn't for some time now. it worked fine when i got the computer but for quite some time it hasn't worked at all. when it first started to screw up if i hit the scroll bar it would freeze up my mouse for about ten minutes so i put electrical tape on that side and eventually it stopped but the whole thing stopped all together now. does anyone have any ideas to what caused this problem and how to fix it?By your post reference to "so i put electrical tape on that side" i have the impression that this represents something you have tried to fix on your own. If it is a HARDWARE issue with the touch-pad you could purchase USB external and use that instead. Either an external touch pad or a mouse with scroll wheel. However just on the off chance that your issue can be resolved with a driver update try the Acer web site for touchpad driver updates. If none can be found there here is a LINK to an alternative site that purports to provide it.
http://www.driverstools.com/e-machines-drivers/download-emachines-e627-notebook-for-windows-xp-vista-7/
truenorthMy own fix for all touch-pad problems, like it being just too slow for me, is to plug in a USB/ digital/ wheel mouse.
With that DONE and working, I can disable the "Synaptics" driver for the touch-pad and then I don't have to worry about me touching the pad by mistake and causing problems with what I'm doing.
And that's just one less thing I have to worry about, running in the background all the time.

Sorry, that's probably NOT what you were LOOKING for, but hey, "Works for me!".

Cheers Mate!

I'd also get a USB mouse, a wireless one, as the solution to this problem.
That's what I do, but sometimes, depending on where you are using the notebook, there's no place to use a mouse.  You also have to cart it around & most cases don't have room for even an AC power adapter. All this to say as i said in my initial reply "Either an external touch pad or a mouse with scroll wheel" you could purchase USB external ". I am using the stated mouse all the time and it does NOT require  an AC power adapter. At this point with all the repetitive suggestions for the same thing i think it would be nice if the O/P would return to acknowledge our recommendation.truenorth

A CPU at 7Ghz....really ? ?
No the Windows 7/Vista ranking system works like this:
http://www.mydigitallife.info/windows-7-experience-index-rating-score-tweaked/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_System_Assessment_Tool

I can easily achieve a CPU rating of 6.6 with my Celeron E3200, slightly overclocked:
The Windows System Assessment Tool is flaky at BEST and isn't a good measure of how a system performs.

As Quantos mentioned, make sure the chipset drivers and everything else is installed and working properly.

If you want to measure how the system is performing, use some real benchmarking software. The windows experience tool is very iffy ... it rated my cpu at 7, then 6.5, then 4.8
It really is something that you shouldn't judge the system by.
If it worked properly ... It would be nice.

But just ignore it, personally I use passmark - http://passmark.com Does it really matter?  If the computer is fast enough for you then why worry?  Of course if it is not fast enough then find out what is running that you can trim out to free up resources.I've run winSAT quite a number of TIMES, every single time I get 7.1.

Solve : Locating Drivers?

Answer»

What EVER happened to being able to locate drivers by just surfing the net? It seems like now every link takes you to downloading a driver search download that needs to be registered and bought. Is there truly a site that has drivers that don't require you to buy the program? I don't mind donating to a legit site buy I don't like being forced to buy a utility.

Thanks
JohnAlways go to your manufacturer site to download drivers. I would never trust any third party software that requires me to pay for free drivers...Drivers are free from the manufacturer.

Anyone that charges you for drivers is ripping you off.Being in the PC repair BUSINESS, I have to search for various drivers quite often and it's become almost epidemic that wherever I go I wind up downloading Driver Guide or some other PAID Software.

I recently tried to find drivers for a Gateway PC and there were only one SET of drivers on their web page, for the model I have.
Well, they were 100% WRONG and did not match the motherboard in this PC.  Possibly, the motherboard had been changed after-market or Gateway had just put in a different motherboard and never listed the proper driver package for it.

Anyway, I went back to my own Driver archives and found every driver I needed.  Most were from 'Realtec'.

So I do have a lot of sympathy for anyone having trouble finding the proper drivers for their PC.

That's one reason, that I sometimes spend HOURS saving a PC rather than just reformatting it and starting over.

Good Luck Mate!
The Shadow  I always go to the manufacture first. I was working on a Sony RS720G and was able to locate all of the drivers on their site with the exception of the TV Tuner card. EXTREMELY irresponcible on Sonys part to not list it in the original list with everything else since it was original with the computer. I was able to locate it only by removing it from the machine and search all the info PROVIDED on the card. I just remember years ago when locating drivers was much easier.

http://www.compaq.com/cpq-country/cpq_support.html
Enter your model number and get the drivers for your computer. Save the files to a CD or flash DRIVE and then take them to your Compaq and install them. Install the chipset drivers first.

When you are done, open device manager to make sure you have all of the drivers installed and there are no more errors. To open device manager click start and type devmgmt.msc in the search box and press enter. WOULD it work on an External HDD or Usb, or would you recomend putting it on a disk?

Solve : CD/DVD driver works and doesn't works sometimes??

Answer»

Hello! It's my first time here! erm...I need some help with my cd/dvd driver. My cd/dvd drive can read and write some dvds and cds but sometimes, it can't read them at all and this is not even the problem of disc brands or whatever. I use the cd disc to burn data files and I always buy dvd movies so that I can WATCH them easily on my laptop. I think the problem started around this year and every time I try to put in the dvd disc, it would make this weird clacking noise and soft lasering sound. I tried putting in other dvd disc and some of them can play.
vice versa for the cd DISCS too.

I've checked in the device manager to see if my burner is having any problems but no. It says that it's working perfectly and I've also updated both of the drivers. I bought a laser lens cleaner but it DOESNT even work. I'm pretty sure that it's not broken yet, seeing that it can still play and write other dvds and cds. I also tried cleaning the discs but nothing is HAPPENING!!! I'm totally frustrated! I need to back up all my data files in the disc so that i can release more space in my hard disk. T_T

oh and I'm running on
Compaq Presario CQ40-401AX, 32 bit
Windows Vista Home Basic,
with the driver TSST CORP CDDVDW TS L633L.

any help would be appreciated! :3
If the drive is more than 3 years old chances are it's getting ready to fail...especially with intermittent issues.
They are relatively inexpensive now...i had a dual-layer DVD shipped for 30 Bucks last week...

10 minutes to install.

Unless of course this is a laptop burner...if so more costly.In-line with patio's comments. Should you feel a "replacement"dvd/cd-rw is in your future you might wish to consider an external one. I recently purchased a 16x dvd/cd-rw for $28.00 and it works like a charm and the portability option plus being able to use it with a multitude of computers via USB connection has been of great benefit to me. truenorthpatio: mm..well yes, it's already 3 years. I wanted to get it fix but my warranty is already over :/ and I don't have much cash now.

truenorth: ah, i've been thinking of getting external ones too. But I'm not sure which one is the best since I've never purchased anything like that before. And I'm guessing that it'll be pretty pricey, since I'm living in asia. But how long do they usually last?

I'm wondering which one is much more costly, by fixing or buying an external burner... :/
btw, thanks for helping me out guys!! :3aisaka, Belatedly welcome to the CH forums. To your questions:
1."I wanted to get it fix but my warranty is already over " If you went the "fix" route it would NOT be worth it as it would cost you more to fix it than to replace it.
2."But how long do they usually last?" If you are asking about how long an external may last that is nearly impossible to ANSWER. If (because it is portable) you happen to drop it that would probably be the end of it's usable life. Then the factor of it's life expectancy as with all things mechanical would be determined by the frequency of use. If you are asking in the general sense how long optical drives might last. That too can be quite variable. There will undoubtedly be CH members that can relate to out of the box failures. Then there will be members (like myself) that have never had an optical drive failure. I have some in computers over 10 years old that still function properly. From what i have seen here on the forums it seems to be quite variable. I do not believe a particular brand ensures longevity more than any other.Your choice in that regard may be more of a factor of what software comes with the new drive (if that matters to you).Myself i usually am more influenced by price.
3. Back to the "fixing" option. Given the way yours is currently performing (intermittent) there are somethings you can try yourself. The intermittent factor may be caused by a faulty cable (be it sata or ide from the motherboard to the drive--or even a loose cable) it could also be a damaged or loose power cable from the PSU to the drive. So if you are confident (or have someone available that can help you) then you could see if anything can be done in those areas. Before buying a new cable try to borrow one temporarily to see if it makes a difference.
4."pretty pricey, since I'm living in Asia." Well as you undoubtedly know pretty well all these types of devices are produced in Asia so being more expensive there (particularly Hong Kong ) i would think would not be the case. However without knowing the particular country in Asia i imagine there could be great differences. I have had the occasion to order computer things from a source in Hong Kong that has no minimum order value and is free shipping on everything anywhere in the world. So do some Google searching for sources in your area or available to you and you might find a good buy.
5."I'm wondering which one is much more costly, by fixing or buying an external burner..." I have already dealt with the "fixing" costs. On the price difference (in North America) between an internal or an external drive there is very little difference. By doing a diligent search you can find external cheaper than internals or vice versa (but the differences will be very little in the final analysis.
truenorthhmm...i see. i guess i should just check out the products first. I'm like you too, focusing on the pricing itself not particularly the brand or anything but since i'm not so good with buying external devices i'm afraid that i might get a faulty one. :/
i think i'll still stick to buying an external one, since if buying an external one and fixing one would have the same pricing, in asia i mean. :>
thanks for the advice and all truenorth! oh and the welcoming of course! >w<
annnnd, im not sure with the cable part, i cant find anyone to help me, nor can i open up my own laptop. i even wanted to try to open it to clean the fan but it's so risky that i couldnt do it. =="
anyway, thanks mate! ;3Didn't realize we were dealing with a laptop optical drive. Definitely then external is your way to go.Don't go poking around inside a laptop. With the external when/if your laptop totally bites the dust you will still have an optical drive you can use on your other computers in the future.truenorth

Solve : NVIDIA Graphics Driver?

Answer»

NVIDIA Graphics Driver has stopped WORKING properly.  I go to the Windows Update and there is none.  Would it be a good idea to install it manually?  I get the blue screen and also the Kaspersky Antivirus I use is corrupted as well.  If someone could tell me how to go about download the NVIDIA Graphics Driver?  Thanks.Sounds like you have more problems than just a graphics driver.

What do you mean your antivirus is corrupted? How do you know? Error message?

Download BlueScreenView

My problem: Have a LAPTOP that worked great for many years. Hard DRIVE crashed and I had to REPLACE it. I reloaded operating system and drivers for touchpad, and audio. Also found driver for my ATI mobility radeon 9600 pro and installed Catylist installer but and stuck in VGA mode. In control panel, there is no "display adapter" spot and vga is under "unknown devices" with yellow exclaimation mark.

What I've tried: windows update, listing "hidden" items in device manager, disabling vga driver first, checking ATI, Asus, American Megatrends webs sites for help. I've downloaded Catylist and latest drivers, it INSTALLS fine, but still will not fire up. As I said, it woked for years, all I did was change hard drive.

Specs: Windows XP sp3, 2gb ram, 250gb HD, directx 9.0, ATI mobility radeon 9600 pro 2d/3d graphics accelerator, American Megatrends / ASUS.Never rely on Windows update fpr drivers...period.
Travel back to the laptop manuf, site and DLoad and re-install ALL the drivers...

Solve : CPU and GRAPHICS card driver update problem?

Answer»

A month ago I tried updating my graphic drivers for my Quadro 3800 Fx. I am running Windows 7 64-bit without service Pack 1. It was a complete disaster as during the installation my theme switched over to basic and I was unable to activate the transparent theme. Not only this but the desktop icons were misaligned and the mouse disappeared when putting it to the far left of the screen. I was even able to drag windows out of view all the way to the left of the screen. A system restore corrected my issue.

I tried installing Quadro/Tesla Driver Release 275 version 276.28 WHQL today and the same thing happened. I then attempted to do a clean install of the graphics driver which is available in the custom options. Doing this however produced are even worse result as it simply uninstalled my current driver which made my screen go black and then my computer reboot. Once my computer rebooted I saw the Windows 7 boot screen and heard the Windows 7 login screen sound however I continue to see the Windows 7 boot screen.

This made my computer completely unusable as I was unable to see what I was doing. I finally managed to fix my computer by pressing the start button on my keyboard and typed in system restore and pressing enter a few times. My computer finally booted from the previous restore point and I was able to see everything again.

I have also tried updating to a older driver yet the same problem OCCURS!!!

How am I SUPPOSED update my graphics driver when it stuffs up every time?

I have tried rebooting
Rolling back drivers
Using older versions of driver updates

NOTHING WORKS!!!!!

Welcome to the CH forums. Where are you getting this "update" from? Why have you determined that an update is required on a 1 year old computer? If there is indeed some essential reason to be doing this update are you absolutely certain that you are choosing the correct driver/filmware update for the operating system? truenorthMy computer seems to no longer run new games such as "Need for speed: The Run" and "Achron". Both games rufuse to run And say that a graphics card update is required...

I get the update from: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us using the auto detect feature

And trust me it's the right one... Guitar_man from CP chat even found an older driver which I tested however produced the same result...

The updated CPU driver from Intels website also produces the same result as the graphics driver update and causes the screen display to stuff up.

What can I do to either BYPASS the required driver update when running these games or update the drivers successfully?Well it certainly does look like you are going to the right source for the drivers and given the requirements of the "game" it does seem one is necessary. Have you tried the TECH support link within the NVidia site to explain your issue and see what they say? It sounds to me as if there is a compatibility issue with some other software on the computer or a lack of RESOURCES of some description that are not getting along with the driver update.I have done a cursory look through the NVIDIA site to try and find you a telephone contact if they offer one it does not jump out at you. If you can find a telephone contact for them it could save a lot of toing and frowing that would probably occur with e-mails. I do note that they have a forum dedicated to their products. truenorthSadly they offer no support... Thats what makes them a terrible company.

Their forums have weak support and just involve people generally boasting about the graphics cards and doing benchmark/stress tests. I tried posting there once about this issue and my topic got unnoticed and removed.

Looks like theres no hope... I wonder if getting a new graphics card would fix this??? would that "fit" and be compatible with my computer? You have spent a fair chunk of change to buy a pretty high end computer. It is difficult to comprehend that on a computer using the latest O/S and very current graphics technology should be giving you the trouble it is re these games. Given that you appear to be prepared to install an alternative graphics card to resolve this issue (though personally i would not give up on trying to update the drivers yet). Have you tried to contact any of the game manufactures re your issue and see if 1st they can assist you with the driver update issue or alternatively suggest what graphics cards will do the job. I would also try and talk to Leveno and tell them of the problem. You should still have access to tech support with them.I certainly would not be putting out any money on a replacement graphics card until i was absolutely certain that it is compatible with the computer and would absolutely work. I am also thinking along the lines of resolution changes  but i cannot see that becoming a factor if and until you can get the updated drivers properly installed. It would be nice if some serious gamers (which i an not) would come onboard this thread that are familiar with either your graphics card or the games you are trying to use.truenorth

Solve : How can I manually install a driver for a video card?

Answer»

I have an older PC I'm trying to upgrade from 1997. its actually not that slow and has GOOD sound.

I have an ATI Radeon 9250 i want to install in it. since its CURRENT card is a little bit  lacking and it need to be upgraded. It fits fine in the system (its a PCI card). but when i ran the CD with the driver on it it freezes up!
This is kinda one of the harder components since without you cant see anything. so its not like i can GO into Add hardware and then put in the CD.
So any other way? can i do it manually? how?
please try to be detailed.

thanks!  Quote from: fixerofoldandnew on December 06, 2011, 01:54:27 PM

Why not? (Without a driver, I mean)You should still have the VGA driver, why can't you see?Well I couldnt see because at first i had only one card in (the new one) which was not recognized. So I inserted the old than tried to install the driver off the CD. wherein the computer froze. Apparenty I have another PCI card slot that i can insert the new card into. so I GUESS ill boot it back up and try "add new hardware" Ill tell you if this works

email address removed by AllanPlease don't post the same question more than once. I deleted the duplicate. Also, while well intentioned your offer of paying for assistance is insulting. We all volunteer our time here and are happy to do so.

Last, I deleted your email address from your post. NEVER post your email address on a public forum. There are bots that scour forums for email addresses and sell them to spammers.

Now for your question. Have you looked here: http://content.epson.de/en/rsd/service/index.1022.htm ? It's possible there are no W7 drivers available if you can't find them.It would appear that the Epson TM series printers are getting a bit long in the tooth. I have located the manual for the TM series (with emphasis on the driver installation and there are no refferences for drivers after Win 2000. Here it is and you can read it.
How old is this PRINTER? I note your query on another forum which seems also to have been unsuccessful.truenorthAs there are a number of these printers STILL popping up on ebay and such-like, I thought I would resurrect this post.

The TM-C600 seems, though I can't be 100% sure, to be a special order machine, manufactured by Epson exclusively for Catalina Marketing.  That is the reason we're not finding drivers for it - because they were never made publically available, as the printers were never designed to be used outside of a Catalina provided environment.

Epson TM printers are, generally, still current - and you'll find the majority of receipts you have printed from whichever stores you visit are coming from Epson TM printers - it's just their EPOS range, so usually you have to have some specialist or in-depth knowledge of these kinds of systems to get them to do something.  More often than not, you don't use a driver, you communicated directly with the printer using codes sent down a physical serial link... remember THOSE days!?? LOL

ANYWAY - I'm working on getting a driver package working for the TM-C600 - and I've had some success - I have printing working, in colour, however more advanced features, like cutting, ink monitoring etc, do not yet work.  If anyone is still interested, post back in here, and I'll keep the thread updated with progress.I just now noticed that in spite of saying i was including a site for the manual of your printer i forgot to do so. I have tried to retrace my search to again locate the manual but i have not thus far found it again. However i did find an Epson site that purports to provide the drivers/manuals/software for the printer. I am not absolutely certain that it is your printer as they refer to it as a "workforce" model. Anyway sorry about the earlier ommision and hope this site may be of assistance

Solve : Can't record sound inWindows 7?

Answer»

My motherboard M5A78L has an on-board Realtek HD Audio sound card. Works well, unless the fact that the Sound Recorder that comes at Accessories  does not work because, it said, "there is no recording device connected."

However, I have LinuxMint11 as guest in VMware. At this, the sound recorder records any sound that comes from the PC's speakers! GOOD one!

In win7 already changed the sound driver, no results

To me this is a "mystery", since usually who does not recognize sound device sometimes, is Linux.

What to do? Quote from: antalves on NOVEMBER 29, 2011, 01:54:26 PM

With on-board audio subsystems you must install only the drivers that came with the motherboard, not drivers from the CHIP maker. But if the CD does not have Windows 7 drivers, find them using then motherboard model, not the audio chip maker.
Google:
M5A78L drivers for windows 7
These are the drives, or driver set, that is just for your motherboard.

As to why Linux can do it, that is another subject. Good for you, because you used Linux as a hardware verification tool. Now get the right drivers for Windows 7 from  a Google search.

Realtek makes a lot of stuff. Custom designs are altered to meet requirements of the motherboard.

Solve : New Motherboard - no audio?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,

I have a NEW MSI 860A-G46 motherboard.  I had recently upgraded my graphics card on that board from a Nvidia Gt240 to a Radeon HD6850, and as such I DECIDED to get rid of all my Nvidia drivers and put only the ATI drivers.  I was glad I had everything working, but after all was said and done, I realized I no longer had sound.

I do rememember when deleting the Nvidia drivers, there was an audio driver Nvidia had on my system, and I am pretty sure removing that driver had an effect.  I put in my motherboard disk and installed the Realtek HD Audio chipset drivers, and they installed fine, but I still have no sound.  I am wondering why this is?  I am plugging my speaker into the "Line Out" port in the back where it was PREVIOUSLY.  The speakers are detected on Windows, and I see audio is being sent, but I hear nothing.  All my volumes are up.

Do you think I should just put the Nvidia audio drives back on and see if that works, or should I find a way to keep my ATI drivers since my motherboard is an ATI/AMD compatible device? If there's no nvidia device then no, nvidia drivers are not needed. Open device manager - any yellow or red symbols?Well, device manager said the audio drivers were there too.  Guess all it needed was a REINSTALL.  As a side note, Nvidia won't take me back with its drivers because I don't have a nvidia device any longer  Quote from: Darthgumby on December 02, 2011, 05:45:54 PM

Sounds like it mat be the "clik of death" from the HDD which would explain your symptoms...
If you hold a pencil or tube to the HDD and your ear you'll know for sure from the vibrations.would a system restore to the time before the nvidia update ever started have helped? Assuming nothing wrong otherwise.

When was the last time you updated your most current Win xp SP.    I am not entirely sure this will fix the problem.  I am just troubleshooting the errors right now.

The error is NOT caused by your application writing over MSVCRT.DLL, it is caused by the fact your game developer used either a newer or older library for that DLL when the game was created. Since this is a fairly new game I expect that your system is a little out of date.

Best solutions are to
a) ensure you have the most recent Service Pack installed for the O/S
b) if that doesn't fix it then check the support site for the game to see if they have a fix or patch available.
i have the latest service pack 3

This probably has nothing to do with anything. What antivirus are you using? I was wondering if something else might be causing the slow down of your computer.

If that doesn't work for you, try installing a fresh copy of your video driver.

If you are not currently using it ...get rid of it.well i roll back my driver but still error is coming. first it used to come after complete start up the windows but now it is coming in the starting screen and multiple time See Above...has it been suggested to try and uninstall drivers and then attempt reinstall to see if things would be properly installed this time around? On my Win7 System:

Code: [Select]C:\Windows\System32>dumpbin /exports msvcrt.dll | find /i "_except_handler4_common"

        346   159 00023E27 _except_handler4_common

File Version of the file is 7.0.7600.16385

running the same command on a fully patched XP SP3 system- I get nothing. No _except_handler4_common is exported in the XP version. (file version for that one is 7.0.2600.5701, btw).

I also tried installing the VC++ 2008 and 2010 redistributables but neither one updated the file.

However. The exception function being called CLEARLY marks it as a Exception handler; the number (4) and the fact that there are in fact similar exports for 3, 2, and 1 in the file led me to believe that it may be that the file msvcrt.dll isn't considered to be part of the c-runtime (in fact, most systems I've seen, it is only updated by the OS or service packs). So, those wouldn't be changed regardless. This leads me to think (further) that it's related to a compile-time option, whereby you can choose to either statically link the C Runtime, or dynamically link to it as a dll, in the latter case, most programs will link against msvcrt.dll- and thus the problem, since depending on the version of the C run-time .lib file that is being used, it will try to link against FUNCTIONS that don't exist in earlier versions of windows.

The answer, from what I can gather, is that the programs were compiled wrong. they aren't supposed to link against msvcrt.dll- they should be linking against msvcr80.dll (or the appropriate version for the compiler in use). msvcrt.dll is only to be linked against by window applets and components. Additionally, it should not be updated by anything other than service packs or KB hotfixes. (this includes things like the redistributables).

The problem therefore, has several causes- either the software is stupidly(not surprising given the software in question) linked against msvcrt.dll for no good reason, or, more likely, there is some other component or DLL copied from a Vista system onto the XP system, possibly in the hopes of "upgrading" it, and of course the Vista/7 file depends on the Vista/7 OS version of the dll.

Solve : Smart Card driver?

Answer»

My Smart Card is not being recognized as a smart card, but as a DFU Adapter. I have another one, same model, and it works just fine, but when I swap them, the other one LOADS a DFU Adapter driver, and then is not recognized as a smart card reader.  I have tried installation on both of my computers, with the same result.  Any ideas how I can make the computer recognize it at the correct device? You do not mention the make and model of your "Smart Card" reader device so i cannot for the moment be more specific than i am about to direct you. Here is a link to a specific card reader with similar issue of recognition. Reading through the steps for that device may assist you with your issues for yours.

truenorthIt is the same reader; however, this fix is spposed to be for VISTA or Win 7.  This issue is not SUPPOSED to occur with XP.  This article is outdated, so the instruction is very difficult to follow.  I tried as best I could, and did arrive at the same conclusion as the pdf, but then when I tried it out on my XP machine, it STILL lists as a DFU Adapter instead of a smart card.
