Solve : Blank CDs?

Answer»

Sorry if this isn't the right board dealy, but I've been having problems with blank CDs on my COMPUTER.  Whenever I put them in, it appears as if they're loading them or whatever, but after it stops, it says there isn't anything inserted in the CD drive.

I've put in other CDs with data on them, and they work fine.  I just would like to KNOW how come it won't recognize I have a CD in there...

Thanks...Because they are empty...what burning program are you currently using ? ?I'm on XP, so I was pretty sure there's one that comes default with it...

Looking at XP tutorials on how to burn things, they make it seem as if you're supposed to at least to get a prompt when you put a blank CD in...Nope.try downloading itunes, sonic stage, moving your music onto there, and using that program to burn your CDs. you can also try the CD-burning tool on windows media player and see if it reads it.Guys, XP shouldn't be saying that there is nothing in the drive. If you insert a blank disc in XP it should come up with a prompt asking you what you want to do, unless you've chosen a default action for blank discs. Besides if you have a blank disc in the drive, you should be able to access that drive by doubling clicking it and see a empty folder. You can then drag and drop files to the folder to burn them.
So to me its sounds like there's a problem with your burner or with the blank cds you're using. The last post from the OP was two months ago...AHH didn't notice mylondoncalling had bumped an old thread. Well never MIND then. Wonder if the guy ever downloaded a burning program ?

We shall never know.....................

Solve : Audio Problem.?

Answer»

I bought a new computer from a website, no problem at all. I've had it for about a week now, and still no problem, until I tried to play a video off of a web site, and I had no audio, I tested around, and most videos would not play audio, but the video was just fine. Anything with DivX seemed to work though (I tried downloading Flash and all sorts of other, to no avail).

SADLY, this is kind of beside the point, my buddies kept telling me it was probably a driver or codec problem, I downloded this codec pack that I used on other comps and worked fine, so I looked to the drivers. I downloaded a driver from Realtek AC97 or something of that sort, and LOST ALL audio, and Winamp couldn't play anything and was getting some error. so I turned to the disc that came with the computer with drivers on it, and I'll be damned if the driver on the disc isn't the same one I downloaded earlier, so I installed that.

So now the point I'm at, Winamp is no longer getting an error, I figured that out, the equalizer is moving and the songs are changing fine, but still no audio. I mention this becuase even when the internet videos weren't working, Winamp at least was, as were any games I was playing.

My "Confirmation sheet" the website I bought my compter from emailed me when I bought the thing says that the sound card is "3D Premium Surround Sound Onboard" and I'm assuming that means that it is ON the motherboard, not to mention looking in the computer there is no extra card in any port except my video card, and all the audio wires from my speakers are going towards the motherboard.

And yes, my volume is up, nothing is muted, and my speakers are plugged in.

So here I am, no audio at all, I tried all the troubleshooting I could, read through some of the help on this website itself, I learned that Realtek is 1/3 general companies that do the onboard sound cards and I read the system information and it said itself I was using Realtek AC97. So I am completely lost as to where my audio went.

Please! Any input or help would be great!

(Also I was told that something might have GOTTEN turned off in the the BIOS, I looked in there and was very careful not to mess with anything I wasn't sure of, but I might have MISSED something)

Thank youNevermind... never underestimate the power of a system restore!

Solve : SiS Audio Driver?

Answer»

My computer recently crashed, and my OS (XP) had to be re-installed. I've reinstalled it, to find I have no audio drivers. I had SIS 7012 before that, I've downloaded, and installed, but it is not working. In device manager under "other devices" I have Video Controller (VGA Compatible) with a yellow ! next to it. Were should the drivers go on the C drive for them to work? And is there a way of telling which driver is right for the PC? ThanksIs this the driver you used below ?It is a zip file. You need Winzip
if you don't have it.

http://driver2.sis.com/audio/7012/a12112d.zip

Yes thats the one. I opened the set-up, it went through the INSTALLATION process and nothing happened.Download and run Everest. Sometimes you are dealing
with SIS and ESS so........SEE what Everest reports for
sound.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.htmli've looked under multimedia and that section was greyed out. its a syntax S651M (A) motherboard if that helpsThe set of drivers for the motherboard is 31.1 MB.

Syntax/Motherboard/S651M.

----->GoHere

There are several options on your sound. See Below. You may get by
with just the sound driver for XP 2.17MB which includes an easy
setup .exe

ClickHereNeither of them work. The eidited link SAYS "installing drivers, may take a few minutes" and nothing happens. The first one wouldn't load up when I clicked on setup.exe . Am I doing anything wrong?

Solve : how to use a microsd card??

Answer»

please help me out, i know absolutely nothing about computers and i have a few problems with my cell phone and micro sd card. i'd realllly appreciate it if anyone can answer any of these questions. thanks in advance!

1.) i, LIKE the idiot i am, just recieved my sandisk microsd card in the mail. i went to kind of test it out and see how it went into the adapter, so i slid it in. now it wont COME out. the switch on the side is up, away from the "lock" LABEL, and i still dont know how to get it out of the adapter. its so small and i dont want to force it out.

2.) once i get it out, i'll probably need a microsd reader. there are different kinds from sandisk, which one is easiest to use?

3.) the purpose for me getting these things is for my phone, an LG cu500 cell phone from cingular. i want to put music from my laptop onto my cell, and get the videos/photos off my cell onto my laptop so i can upload onto youtube or whatever. if anyone can give me STEP by step instructions to do this so i don't cause anymore damage, that would be fantastic!i'm pretty sure you shoved it in the wrong way.
you do need an SD reader for SD cards. they are fairly cheap, and can usually be plugged into a usb port. apart from that, i don't know enough about them to recommend one, i myself would just go for whatever would work and last a decent amount of time, and doesn't cost me an arm and a leg.mylondoncalling........ I am attaching a image of the microsd card and the sd adapter.   Did you possibly put the micro card into the adapter the wrong way around?

You can pick up a sd card reader very cheap. Usually they will read other types as well. You should be able to find one for about $20.00 US or less.

dl65  well i'm not sure what was the problem, but a friend got it out for me, thanks!
now as for the card readers, i just ordered one. once i get it, is it easy to use from there?

Solve : VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter?

Answer»

VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter  is not working, i just installed xp and the operating system SEES it, but it says limited or no connectivity.   the adapter is on my motherboard.  I cant install any drivers for it, i tried from the cd that came with the board, the latest from the website and the ones from windows.  Is this an onboard NIC or a PCI NETWORK card ? ?
A new card is relatively inexpensive as you could diagnose this for days with no results...its onboard, and i dont really have space for a pci,  so any help to get this new motherboard port working would be great.Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager...find the Rhine listing, right clik it and select REMOVE...ignore the warning.
Re-boot and Windows will detect the hardware and prompt you for the driver...whenever i try to remove it the device manager freezes and doesnt complete the removal.  Try it in safemode...enter safemode by hitting F8 repeatedly as the machine is starting and before you see the Windows logo.safe mode worked better, but still the port doesnt work.  however i was able to remove the device and reinstall in safe mode.  Any thing else i could try? It's very possible the onboard NIC has failed...

Why do you not have any available PCI slots ? ?Sometimes taking a BACKWARD approach will work. Remove from device manager, remove the driver. Shutdown (not restart). Reboot to safe mode. Install the driver. Reboot again in normal mode.

Solve : SY-KT400 DRAGON Lite driver CD not installing?

Answer»

I am using Windows Home XP SP2. I just installed it this morning and I am now trying to install my motherboard drivers. I put the CD into the DRIVE, but the CD doesn't auto-play. I go into My Computer and try to Open or Explore it, and it doesn't WORK . When I try to Explore I get an ERROR saying the the DISC is either corrupted or in a format the computer can't read.

In my instruction manuel it says there are four drivers that are required.

  • VIA 4 in 1 driver
  • C-Media 8738 audio driver
  • VIA USB 2.0 Driver
  • LAN driver

I went onto SOYO's website and found a page that has drivers for download. I found this page, and it has drivers for download. I can't find the VIA USB 2.0 driver for XP, HOWEVER. So, my question is: How can I install these drivers on my new computer and where I can find the VIA USB2.0 driver for Windows XP?You shouldn't need USB 2 drivers for XP SP2. So unless XP isn't recognizing your USB devices or telling you that they're not running at full speed, you have no need for this driver.

Regarding the other drivers, just download and install them on your computer.
As far as I can see you need the following:
via4in1v453.zip
vialan_v33.exe
cmi8738_win_xp_v0644.exeAlright, thanks for the help. Everything seems to be working now.

Once again, thanks!  Glad I could help. And i'd contact Soyo for a replacement CD as well...you may need it down the road.

Solve : Unable to Start Windows?

Answer»

Hello everyone. This...is just not my month. I was recently on here about my fiance's laptop..and now my desktop just died on me.

System specs:
Dell Dimension 2300. Several years old.
512 MB RAM
1.8 ghz processor (I think)

I believe the problem is a hardware problem. (OBVIOUSLY considering that i'm posting it here.) Sadly, i'm not very knowledgeable about hardware problems.

Yesterday, my computer stopped connecting to the internet. (Not sure if this is actually related or not) This irked me, but wasn't exactly the first time it had happened (since I connect through a router) and so I turned off my computer. HOWEVER, since then I have been unable to boot windows. Whenever I turn on my computer it brings up the dell LOGO screen and then it brings up a message saying "Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility"

I tried both of these, hitting f1 does nothing but bring the message up again; F2 brings up the setup utility..but that doesn't help me much. I tried to load a rebooting disc and a windows xp reinstallation disc, but couldn't get either started.

Also, (and the key REASON that I believe this is a hardware problem) the computer makes a slow but repetitive clicking noise which coincides with a blinking of the Hard Drive access light on the front panel.

The computer was working fine until I shut it down.Do you have another hard drive you can use ?No I don't..  Well, if you unplug the hard drive power plug, then boot, does
the clicking noise disappear,or is it still there?erm..sorry, but where is the harddrive power plug?Ok part of this video applys to you ....... watch it all , some good information , it will go through how to remove it ....

http://video.about.com/pcsupport/SecondIDEharddrive.htm

The 1st 33secs will explain how to take out the power cable.....Alrighty, I disconnected the power from the harddrive. When I booted the clicking noise was gone.well sounds like its your hard drive is the main issue  there buddy , just out of curiosity did that video help you out Yeah, it showed me where the cord was. :-) And I had assumed that it was the problem.. I was really wondering whether there was something I could do about it. Other than buying a new harddrive...sweet as a nut as we say here in the uk glad it helped you .......  Yeah, thanks for the vid. So..any idea what's wrong with the hard drive? anyone?Well, your hard drive is failing.Get a new hard drive.

Hook up the old one as slave long enough to get any
important files off of it then........Take it in the yard and
kick a field goal.

HAHA and i will be on other end trying for a field goal....*sighs* I knew you were going to say that. There isn't really anything important on it..nothing that's not replaceable or that I don't have a backup copy of anyway. But I can't afford to get a new one, and it isn't worth it considering that i'm getting a new comp. as a graduation present in a few months anyway. ...but I need that comp! :-(

well, thanks a lot for the help. Now that it's been confirmed that it's hopeless, perhaps I can work out getting that new computer earlier.. :-)

Solve : Monitor driver causing repetitive rebooting?

Answer»

Hello,
I am running Microsoft XP on my Gateway 835 computer.  About 3 days ago I had a driver error MESSAGE pop up and my wife closed it before I got to read what it was.  Now, everytime I log in, it boots passed windows and before opening my desktop reboots again.  When the initial boot screen POPS up, there are black lines running through it.
I did get it to start in safe mode, but the screen had lines running through it and it was difficult to see the windows I was opening.  I tried to restore the SYSTEM to about a week ago before the problem and still have the same problem.

I've plugged my monitor into a separate computer and it works fine.  So my thought is my video card is going BAD....but would that cause the computer to reboot or would it be something with the system?

Any help would be appreciated...thanks!  Do you also have onboard video?A littl googling I see you have onboard video and a PCI-E for video, which one are you USING?

Solve : Sound card drivers?

Answer»

Hey people..

Well I bought a new 160gb hard drive and a cheap soundcard ($30) a month ago..

A few days back the cops raided my house and took my hard drive away for analysis.. So I bought a new 80gb hard drive and installed it.

Everything's fine except my sound card has no drivers and THEREFORE I cant get anything to work (music / recording) and the cops messed up my house and a LOT of things are missing INCLUDING a box of CD's which contained the drivers I needed.

I want to know if there is a way I can get the appropriate drivers from the internet and if so, how.. The box my soundcard came in had no brand name on it.. It just says "Sound Card".. Cheap crap..

So yeah if anybody has any ADVICE it would be much appreciated as my PC is quite boring without any sound and it's DRIVING me crazy  Go to Windows Update and you may find that they have the drivers for your card.Or also you could DLoad and run Everest Home which will tell you everything you need to know...including hotlinks to manuf. driver sites.

Solve : A4 tech mouse / driver problem?

Answer»

A while ago I BOUGHT this A4 tech mouse. When I use the mouse without the driver that comes with it, the side BUTTONS only work as back/ forward and the left / right scroll wheel doesn't do anything. However, after I load the driver, I completely lose my middle mouse button click (Which I did have before I loaded the A4 tech driver). I use that not only to open tabs in Firefox, but also to navigate around the 3D window in a PROGRAM I use called Blender.

So my question is this: Is there any way to make my middle mouse button (Clicking the scroll wheel in) work with this driver? Or is there a way to switch between the A4 driver and the "stock" WINDOWS driver quickly, so I can use each one when I need it?

I appreciate any help.Have you tried re-assigning the middle button properties after the A4 drivers are installed ? ?
Control Panel/Mouse Properties.Holy crap, I feel like a moron. There was a middle button option. I swear I've looked so many times for one but NEVER found it. Well, thanks! You're more than Welcome...stop by anytime.

Solve : Missing plug & play Drivers?

Answer»

Help!!!

I plugged in a new usb memory stick and xp couldn't install it!.  I went to the device manager and discovered that all of the preloaded GENERIC drivers for everything has gone; not just for usb but everything.  When I clicked on 'all devices', normally loads of drivers for everything appears, but it windows says there's nothing there.

I checked the PNP directory, and all the dll files are there.

Consequently I cannot even plug in a joystick, memstick, camera or anything and get it working unless I've got the Driver CD, which obviously I haven't got as they are all Plug & Play. And the last thing I want to do is re-install xp as my system is a packard BELL, and that'll involve formatting the HD as it runs it's own recovery program which WIPES everything back to FACTORY condition  , and I don't have a external HD to back up 170Gb of personal files to.

Any IDEAS would be great

DarrenYou should have a Packard Bell Driver disc that shipped with the machine...all that would be needed is to re-install the motherboard drivers...no re-install of XP.

If not check Packard Bell's website or whoever bought them out.
And start considering a regular backup strategy. All HDD's fail even externals. I recommend Acronis True Image.

Solve : Cannot get computer to show when I put a CD in the Drive?

Answer»

My computer will not read or even try to read a cd when I put it in the drive.  When I OPEN 'my computer' it doesnt even show a cd drive. What happened before this started?
How old is the drive, and what make/model is it?
Does it show up in device manager?
If you are comfortable with it, open the case and ensure that the drive is plugged in properly.I dont know what happened, my roomate was "clearing out" some of his files last night and today it doesnt work.  It is a 2002 gateway RUNNING windows XP.  I opened it and it is plugged in.  I am not sure where to check the device manager.Right click on My Computer, and CHOOSE Manage, then Device Manager.
It should be in a category called DVD/CD-ROM drives. It shows the following:

Windows cannot LOAD the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.OK, right click the drive in device manager and choose UNINSTALL, then OK.
Reboot, and Windows will reinstall the driver for it.Great!  Thanks for the helpI guess that means it's sorted then.
You're welcome, feel free to post again if you have any more problems.

Solve : I need help with my monitor and cd and and dvd drive.?

Answer»

MY monitor can only display on 800x600 resolution, if I attempt to put it any higher, the screen goes black and it says out of scan range. I think that the cause of this problem s the driver, but I do not know how to repair it.

Also the CD and dvd drive are not working..what should i do?What happened before this started?
What graphics card do you have?
What OS do you have?
And how old are the CD/DVD drives, and what make/model are they?I don't exactly remember what hapeened before this started, one day I just turned on the computer and it said the message, so I had to start in another mode, VGA mode or something and I set it to 800X600 resolution from there.

Umm, where do I check what graphics card i have?

The operating system that I have is Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2.

The CD/DVD drives are about 2-3 years old, The CD is HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8400B. And the DVD is TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M1612

Go to Start - Run - type dxdiag - PRESS enter.
Go to the Display tab, take a screenshot, and LET us see it (either attach it or use imageshack or similar). This is what it said after the DxDiag scan under the Display tab:

(You have to click on it to view it larger.)OK, you need to find out what video card you have.
What's the make/model of your computer?
if you don't know, download Everest Home Edition, save a report, and attach it to your NEXT post.

Solve : DirectX refuses to update?

Answer»

My computer is almost 2 YEARS old and I've never been able to get my directx to the latest version, I'm still using the original 9.0C from 2004.  For some reason it seems to block my attempts to update.

I've tried everything, using windows update and the web installer, installing a newer version from a game cd, updating in safe mode.

I do get some artifacts in newer games because my direct x just won't update and I do now what I'm doing at least I think I do, all my drivers are UPDATED except the *censored* direct x.  Hopefully someone can help.

System Specifics:
Dell XPS Gen 4

Operating System: Windows XP Service pack 2
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 3.2 with hyperthreading
Hard Drive: Maxtor 80 gig 7200 rpm
Graghics Card: Geforce 7800GT OC
Memory:  2 gigs ddr2 ram
Audio:  Soundblaster Audigy 2 zs
OK, try clicking here to download the full package (large download, ~60Mb)
When the download has finished, double click it and CHOOSE where you want to extract it to (say, a folder called Directx).
When it has extracted the files, open the folder and open dxsetup.exe.
When this has finished, you can delete the folder and the file you downloaded.
Hope this helps. Thanks for the reply but like I said I've tried everything and yes I am clicking on the dxsetup.exe file.  I've been wondering if Dell locks the direct x just like they LOCK the bios.  Is there a difference between a retail copy of Windows and a OEM intall?   But even dell says to update you're direct x so that couldn't be it.

I know my computer runs fine and direct x works fine but I its just frustrating me, it just won't update.

I forgot to mention that when I do update and look in the direct x log file in windows explorer it will show that it is installing but it looks like dx files are not being installed as though the computer is blocking it.   And the direct x should update when I install newer games from a cd rom but it still won't install.

Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Edit:  I forgot to mention that it still won't update even after a clean install of windows using the download you gave and previous versions.  Is there a file or something I need to install?Vista only for DX10?I must say, that is extremely odd.
If it still won't update after a FRESH install of Windows, I am totally stumped.
Sorry.

Try INSTALLING an updated driver for your video card' I am not sure how I can resolve this and would therefore, APPRECIATE any help on this matter. What video card/or integrated video do you have ?

Have you ran Everest to find this out ?

Everest How do I find out what video card i have?
Also, is there a way that i can run the Everest program without having to pay a subscription fee?Everest is free...just DLoad it and install it.
Save the report as a text file...After scanning, it tells me that i need to pay a subcsription fee to download the missing drivers. Is this what is supposed to COME up?I have just tried to run a DVD on Cyberlink PowerDVD and a similar message appears, reading: TV out port of your display card is not working properly- This copy protected disc cannot be played when the TV out function is enabled? Is this the same problem and doeds this give any more clues as to how it can be resolved? thanks

Solve : DVD/CD rewriter prob?

Answer»

i have just replaced my dvd/cd rewriter ,but i am having problems , it goes through the burning process the music files appear on the cd disc but when  i try to play it i get no sound ?? it is a toshiba samsung 18x dvdrw and i am running windows xp HOME, sp2.........can anyone assist pls  How are you burning the disc? I.e. are you creating an audio disc or a data disc with mp3 files on etc.
How are you trying to play the disc?
Sounds like you have multi-session turned on in your burning program which means it is not being finalised. A player will then see it as an empty disk.i am using nero 7 to burn the audio files to cd, it converts to NORMAL  cd audio format
which are meant to be able to play on any cd player etc,but the pc plays the disc ok but  there is no sound at all and my cd player just says ni disk...uninstalled dvd/cd burner n reinstalled same with nero 7 but still the same ?? tried ashampoo cd burning  prog also n still doing the same ,windows media player does the same ..tried a different burner but it was also the same effect ,,its got me STUMPED !! thanks for any help Have you ever been able to play burned disc on that cd player? Some can be very picky about burned media. Have you tried playing them on another cd player? Quote from: Deerpark on August 08, 2007, 10:00:56 AM

Have you ever been able to play burned disc on that cd player? Some can be very picky about burned media. Have you tried playing them on another cd player?
Speed is also a factor when it comes to this.  For example...my RECORD player can play CD's burned at 64x with no problem, but my car won't play anything burned faster than 16X. i have played burned cd's on my player for years now , this has only been a problem since my old burner packed in and i replaced it .surely if it was the player my pc at least should be able to play the burned cd music, which it seems to but with no sound ,if you know what i mean ? media player etc go thru the motions etc, no multi session disk selected in my burning prog i checked that thanks ,and i have tried using slower burnind speeds but still no joy.....

any more suggestions welcome n thanks for the help so far guys   Have you tried the 127kb guided help program?

Scroll down to the rectangle shaped box called
'Download Guided Help' download and run the fix.

Solve : Sound Card drivers apparently not recognised or not found.?

Howdy doodies.
i just got a sound CARD from my father's computer. it's in close to perfect condition, as it was his little baby APART from his case.
i got it off him with EVERYTHING it came with.
drivers, box, books, etc.
i put everything from my old case in the new case i bought... and uhh..
everything WORKED, my graphics card (sapphire X1950 GT), mouse (razer DeathAdder), keyboard (Logitech G15),
and it finds the sound card but won't use the drivers. despite any amount of re-installation of the drivers or rebooting.

here's the error.

uhh.. the picture won't show?
umm..

whats the make and model number..... lets see if i can hunt down a download online

Tony well i thought the problem was gone, as the sound was working temporarily, but i rebooted and it stopped... it's been screwed ever since... i'll post the info later, i've got a doctor's appointment  Have you tried it in another slot just in case ? ?yeah. same thing happened...ach! it's finally working. i think the drivers are fine, but the way my mobo sits in my case isn't quite right, so the slot that the sound card is in is affected by it. i had to try reseating it 4 times, but now it finally works... thanks though guys, i appreciate it Good call! patio.....

Solve : Whether to update nVidia driver for FX 5500 or not?

Answer»

Folks, I'd like your opinion here.  I have a nVidia GeForce FX 5500 (256MB) graphics card installed but I'm still using a driver which dates back to Oct '05, I believe; the version is 8.1.9.8, or 81.98.  A visit to nVidia website, and using their driver selector for the FX 5500, indicates 169.21 in the most current driver.

I browsed through some FAQ pages on their site and get conflicting impressions on whether to UPDATE or leave as is.  My system (Win XP Pro SP2) is stable with the 81.98 driver.  What would you do, update to the latest driver or not? If you are unsure of the results the failsafe method would be to create a new Hardware Profile in XP to test the new driver...this will not affect the original installation and you will be presented with a choice at STARTUP of which you want to boot to.

Black VIPER's site has excellent instructions on setting these up but it's pretty straightforward.

As far as opinion i have found that when it comes to drivers...newer is not always better.Personally, I wouldn't bother updating the driver.
The FX5500 is an older card, meaning that new drivers will not contain an fixes or performance improvements for it, they'll focus on the latest and greatest.
If your system is stable, leave it as it is.Thanks patio and Calum.  The creating of a new Hardware Profile for testing sounds like a very good idea.  I may try that; otherwise, I'll PROBABLY just leave it as is.  A follow-up: I did create a new Hardware Profile, set it as default for the time being, started up under that profile, and installed the new driver.  So far, I can't see any significant difference, performance-wise.  I may switch back and forth the two hardware profiles (the other one has the older driver) for awhile and allow some more time for observation and comparison.  In any case, creating the Hardware Profile was an interesting exercise.  To do this, I visited both the Black Viper site http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/xpprofiles.htm and a Microsoft page on To create a hardware profile.Cool stuff hey ? ?
One of the better things MS included with XP and on...
You can also use it for testing new software without any consequences but instead i Swear by Total Uninstall...

Solve : need to restore partition file system without formatting...?

Answer»

Here is the SITUATION. I have my CD collection backed up on hard drive on a 40 GB partition. I RECENTLY purchased a new computer and I copied the music partition from ONE HD to another HD to back it up. I now have, on BOTH drive, a 40 GB partition which is full, but has no file system. (listed as none or other in various partition MANAGERS)

I do not think that I did anything other than I described above that would have caused this problem. I was doing a lot of file juggling and reformatting, but the copy was the only action I took invloving this specific partition.

Is there anyway to restore the file system structure to anything readable in XP or VISTA (so FAT, or NFTS) without reformatting the partition and thus erasing all the music that I am really hoping is still on the partition? Is there any way to verify that my music is indeed still on the partition without it having a file system?

Or do I just get to rebuild my music library from scratch again? You don't have to guess which response I am hoping for....Not FREE

Boot into safe mode and reenable the device...you may need to re-install the drivers.
To enter safe mode tap F8 repeatedly on startup before you see the Windows splash screen...
I tried and when booting to safe mode screen is black and you can see as the various files appear loading it stops and the LAST entry is windows\system32\drivers\gagp30KHow LONG did you wait ? ?
It may TAKE up to 10 minutes if a corrupt driver or system file is missing... Quote
gagp30kx.sys is a special agp driver for via-chipset motherboards
It does not appear to be a generic Windows driver however as it is not in my listing of system32/drivers...this leads me to believe he isn't in safe mode.I see...Well strictly speaking Windows doesn't only load generic Windows drivers in safe mode. I know this because whenever I enter safe mode the last entry is the driver for DAEMON Tools.

Solve : CD Drive problem with discs?

Answer»

okay, the task of trying to figure out why this is happening has been frustrating me for about 3 HOURS now. I can't seem so FIND anyone with a similar problem, so if anyone can help Id be very thankful.

My CD Drive did work fine until today. This is what HAPPENS..
My Drive now Reads DVD-RAM Drive when no cd is in, When I put a cd in the name changes to CD Drive and nothing else happens, its as if there is no cd in at all... it doesnt run..
Unless... I put in a DVD R/RW... then it works... Ive tried putting in CD R/RW, nothing. I've put in bought cd's, nothing. It wont even read my windows disc.... whats wrong with it?

It used to read all cd's, but thats when it stayed with the name CD Drive at all times, instead of changing back and FOURTH between CD and DVD-RAM.

Can anyone help  Those DRIVES have TWO lenses, one for CDs, one for DVDs.
Your CD lens may be dirty (try lens cleaner - never worked for me), or is dead. Also keep in mind that the drive will show the designation of whatever type of CD was in it last even after a reboot until another type is used...

Solve : Printer Printing sooooooooooo Slow?

Answer»

Hi! i have a HP printer 4255 officejet all in one, it was working well but recently its as started working sooooooooo slow, especialy when i'm printing in color, can any one give an idea of whats wrong and what can be done to improve the performance of this machine? I have also noticed that this behavior only happens when i'm using my destop PC a P4, with 256 MB Memory, but when i connet to my laptop it works just fine. Any help is welcome.P4 does not mean that you don't have USB 1.1 read the below link
and follow instructions.

http://www.usbman.com/Guides/checking_for_usb_2.htm

If you only have USB 1.1 on the desktop PC,below link is
an example of what you could do.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815150097Install more RAM ( 512MB or more ). If XP you definately want at least 512 instead of 256, most XP systems of the P4 flavor came with 128 or 256 Ram, and worst off is if you have integrated video that eats up to 64MB into the 128 or 256, so then  XP is running on in your case potentially only 192MB Ram. Home is more forgiving at 192MB than XP Professional.

Ram should be a cheap solution maybe $20 for a 256MB stick. Be SURE to get PC2100 for 266 MHz FSB Ram, PC2700 for 333MHz FSB DDR Ram, or PC3200 for 400MHz FSB DDR Ram. Most Ram have a sticker on them specifying 2100, 2700, or 3200 for the P4 flavor, and if one of the very first P4 systems less than 2.0 Ghz you may find it needs PC-100 on a rare occasion, but more common for first generation PC-133 Ram as SDRAM. You can always search through Google for others selling your same system to get specs or get specs through PC MFR if you are unsure.

Check for Disk Fragmentation on your hard drive and clean up fragmentation through Defrag to clean up the swap file that the task is temporarily spooled to in the spooler service.

USB 1.1 and 2.0 can make a difference as posted before, but I'd start with RAM and bring it to at least 512MB for Windows XP, assuming you are using XP Home or Professional.

Also check to make sure the CPU Fan and Heatsink are not clogged with dust ... P4 systems have Thermal Throttling to slow the CPU when running too hot. A clogged fan and heatsink will cause the P4 to run like a P1 if having to Thermal Throttle.

Dave
Thanks everyone for getting intouch with your suggestions, and my apologies for coming back so late, i was on a trip.

As suggested to increase the memory, i did so, i increased from 256Mb to 1GB, still no solution, I'm thinking on BUYING a PCI USB card 2.0 and see what will be the results, i will certainly get intouch again and give a feed back on this issue, once again thanks for the helpim not even going to bother reading any of this---

Solve : Laptop touchpad woes?

Answer»

Alright, some of you might recall the laptop being discussed HERE. Same computer, different problem now. Refer to the old thread for specs for the EeePC4G so I don't have to type them all out again

This has to do with the Synaptics PS/2 Touchpad (it's connected by PS/2 connection directly to the motherboard).

I finished installing XP on that laptop. Everything seems to be working fine except the touchpad. The pad was working fine right after the Windows install. The EeePC comes with a CD that contains both the Linux and WinXP drivers. When inserted in Windows XP, the autorun starts and you have the option of installing all drivers or select specific ones to install.

So I installed all drivers (like I did on my EeePC8G, which works fine) and the system RESTARTS. After restarting with all drivers for all hardware installed, the touchpad ceases to function. The hardware manager sees it there and lists it as not having a problem as does the hardware tab in Mouse options in the control PANEL. However, the Synaptics software which controls special functions (scrolling, tapping, sensitivity options, etc.) does not see the device.

However, if I rollback the driver to the Windows XP default driver, it works fine again, except I have no access to the advanced options. I've tried deleting the driver manually, with the uninstaller, and through the hardware manager... nothing seems to make it work. I've also tried downloading the latest driver from the ASUS website, same issue. Any thoughts?Have you tried the generic touchpad driver from Synaptics?Same result with their generic driver. After the restart, the touchpad stops functioning.I know this is a notebook size machine but is there enough room to possibly connect the PS2 to one of the USB ports USING a PS2 to USB dongle and short cable ? ?
Trying to eliminate hardware as the issue here...It registers as a PS/2 device to the system, but it's not a PS/2 plug inside. The touchpad is wired directly to the motherboard without a PS/2 port like you would find on a desktop system.

Besides, it's not my laptop and doing so would void the warranty. The hardware (more or less) is the same between the 4G (this one) and 8G (mine). I had no problems with my 8G when I installed Windows XP and the Synaptics driver included on the ASUS CD.

It's weird, I've seen things act like this BEFORE you give them a driver, but not after haha. I've e-mailed ASUS to see what they have to say about it, but not expecting too much. Probably a standard pre-written 'install the drivers' reply or something. We'll see. Still open to suggestions from you guys though.Well, just found a big thread on this over at eeeuser.com that I didn't find while searching before. Seems a lot of people are having this problem. Funny thing is, the only thing we all have in common is the black EeePC4G. No other colors or models SEEM to have a problem. Weird.Paint it Green....and re-boot. Quote from: patio on January 05, 2008, 10:07:46 AM

Paint it Green....and re-boot.

haha I wish it were that simple...Any truth to the RUMOR they are coming out with a 10" model ? ?ASUS has denied it, but have confirmed they will release the 16GB model in Japan only sometime this year.Ok, update on this.

ASUS has confirmed that there is a problem with the ASUS EeePC 4G black models and the driver for the touchpad. They say they're working with Synaptics to get a working driver and should have a solution within 2 weeks.Thanx for the update...
Sucks you have to wait but oh well...

Solve : External Hardrive (LACIE)?

Answer»

I had originally purchased this external hardrive for my MacBook Pro-it worked just fine. I was able to copy files onto "Lacie" without any issues. Though one day I wanted to use my external on my Dell PC-The computer couldn't read the drive because it needed to be formatted. So I petitioned it (formatted it), but stopped at 4% after learning that it would completely erase all of my stored information. I'm not that worried about saving the stored INFO., though being able to would be FANTASTIC. It's just that now, when I plug "Lacie" into my Mac, it says that it is not formatted for the computer, and "ERROR" in RED shows.

Please help me. This is such an expensive hardrive that works like a charm. Anyone have any clue as to make it work for my Mac once again? Forget the PC.  It wants me to Partition it again, but like I said before, "ERROR" shows up.

Thanks so much.MAC's and PC's use different file systems which since you started the format process on the PC the Mac no longer recognises the drive.
The data RETRIEVAL would probably be pretty difficult at this point unless you took it to a professional service which can be expensive.

So you will need to decide which machine you want to use it on and proceed from there.

Here is a link to 5 Mac HDD utilities including a data recovery tool you may want to try.
There is also a tool for partitioning and formatting that drive to prepare it for use with a Mac.

If you decide it's for a PC post back as the utilities will be different...I'd format it to a Fat32 partition using the PC, which is cross PLATFORM compatible between Mac and PC.

Getting data off of drive is possible, but not cheap. I use GetDataBack for data recoveries like this, and its about $80

http://www.runtime.org/gdb.htm

I bought the entire suite for $180 a few years back, and it has paid for itself 10 fold since. Drives that clunked were even able to be extracted of vital data. Process may be slow recovering data depending on how DRASTIC of a problem the software is up against, but it builds a new directory structure and grabs all salvageable data.

Solve : Install DVD program w/o DVD drive?

Answer»

Rec'd Microsoft "Streets & TRIPS" program as present.  No DVD drive on my computer.  How can it be installed? It can't without a DVD drive. But DVD drives are pretty cheap so maybe it was time to get one?
If that's not an option then check whether a CD version is available.Without a DVD Drive, you will NEED one...UNLESS you have a 2nd computer with a DVD Rom drive available and run a Virtual Drive package like this one http://www.farstone.com/software/virtualdrive-pro.htm
in which you create the virtual DVD on a system with a DVD drive and import it to the system without a DVD Drive.

((( Some DVD's dont get along with this virual drive! )))

Some anti-piracy scripts on the CD and DVD's will make the CD/DVD software on the virtual image inoperable so its a hit and miss as to if it would work or not. I use this software to avoid having to load CD's and DVD's for some games. Other games they blat that they want a physical disk!

And you only want to ever use this for software that you own, otherwise its illegal! The virtual drive software blats about this upon installation.

This software was helpful for my trip to florida when I had an old P3 Laptop that only had a CD Drive and the Map software I was using was on a DVD like yours that was a few years old. In my case it WORKED fine. I was using a Teleatlas product like shown here http://www.teleatlas.com/OurProducts/MapData/NavigationCDsDVDs/index.htm

Solve : Oki C3400n Printer -- DOS Printing driver support?

Answer»

Ok,

I have a Pentium 4 system running Windows 2000 Pro SP4, and an accounts payable software application that only prints to the LPT1 port and runs from the command shell of Windows 200 Pro SP4.

The prior printer was a Savin 28n, and it worked fine for printing using the NET USE LPT1 \\computername\printersharename   function.

We upgraded the accountant to this Oki C3400n printer and when using the new NET USE LPT1 function after deleting the OLD NET USE LPT1 first, we now get an orange light on the color laser printer when trying to print from this accounting dos application. The printer prints fine through Windows, so I know that the driver is good. But there is something different between the Savin 28n and the Oki c3400n printers ability to support DOS program printing through the NET USE function.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make this work? Is there a software app that works better for the translation from LPT1 to the Network printer than a shared printer and NET USE LPT1 \\computername\printersharename ?

The accouting program called PC Master also has a configuration page that allows for the following adjustable configurations, but I didnt touch any of these configuration values since I dont want to make the problem worse. I did however take a screen shot of teh configuration so I could PLAY with settings and revert back if needed.

Here is the configuration that the PC Master Program allows configuration of, and unfortunately the software is obsolete and the help function is worthless, but the software is still used daily and there is no easy upgrade to get us in the Windows ENVIRONMENT.

Software Printer Config:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Printer Type > 3
Printer Port > 1
Decimal Printer Code(s) For 17 CPI > 27,38,107,50,83
Decimal Printer Code(s) For Normal CPI > 27,38,107,48,83

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not SURE if anyone may be able to make sense of this configuration to suggest what values to populate and test etc?

Thanks,

Dave Hello Everyone,

Figured I would post this to share this info in case anyone else ever runs into this, but it looks as though it cant be done without a Hyper C Emulation ( GDI or Windows Enhanced Printing ) converter to get it to talk correctly to the Oki Printer. Not sure if there is a translation to Hyper C emulation, but I am going to hunt around for it, unless someone already knows of one.

Below is the e-mail from an Oki Specialist who RESPONDED to my support e-mail.

Solve : Windows 2000 Professional Drivers?

Answer»

I just acquired Windows 2000 Professional to fix my SYSTEM. I put the disc in and follwed the instructions. Now when I try to get on the INTERNET with it, it says my DNS server is UNREACHABLE or unavailable. I contacted Embarq and they informed me I was missing my drivers. Can anyone please help me fix this so that my husband can have his laptop back and I can have my PC back on-line. Thank you in advance Go to Device Manager, and see, if there are any errors there. You could also DLoad and run Everest Home and post the computer summary info here so we know what hardware we're talking about in that machine.
Save the report to a /txt file and copy and paste the summary...I went to device manager and it has other options which have my ethernet and all in it, with ?'s beside it. I called LINKSYS to see if they could help fix it but they were no help at all. I am at my wits end lol Quote

it has other options
You mean Other Devices?

I'm trying to get some drivers to INSTALL. They are for getting my Rock Band GUITAR controller to work on a game called Frets on Fire for computer. I finally found the driver(The person said it worked for the Guitar Hero controller, so I'm going to assume it will work for RB as well).
The problem is, when I try to install the .exe, a message box titled "Setup Error" pops up saying "installation did not complete". No more information is given.

Is there a way to go into the .exe file and manually extract the files? Thanks for the help.

By the way, here is a link:

UPDATE: I manged to extract all of the files in the .exe, but now I don't know where they would normally go Do you have any errors listed in DEVICE Manager?

Solve : MSP 250 champion - (Epson) not printing?

Answer»

HI,

I face a problem with MSP 250 Champion (similar to EPSON) 80 col dot matrix matrix printer.

This is connected to PC with a parallel to USB connector cable.
The printer does not move its head properly after printing the FIRST line of first page, it stops printing after first line, and the head keeps on jerking.

This goes on for some time.. and then it starts printing..

What could be the problem?

Rgrds
RajI think these drivers may work.Choose the WINDOWS you use.

             ---->Here

Also look---->HereHi,

The printer works well with Parallel to Parallel connection
The problem happens only when Parallel --> USB converter cable is connected.  The cable is of BAFO.  XP has plug & play installation of this cable......  Some times, first page will get printed correctly... then it will start showing problems..

When unplugged from USB port of computer, but with printer's power on  -  it becomes o.k.Do you not have a parallel port? If you have one, have you TRIED it?

If not, you might still be ABLE to get a PCI parallel port. Might work better.

Solve : Installed something bad...?

Answer»

OK...first of all, I'm an idiot.
In an effort to speed things up with my system, I found a website that scanned my system.  It told me I should download a certain driver that would speed me up.  Guess it must have been a video driver, because now, everything is really small.  Fonts, icons, etc.
I have messed around in the "display" area of control panel, but nothing will bring me back to where I was before this download.  Have also tried "system restore", but that comes back as INCOMPLETE, after trying several different dates.
My next option would be to re-install Windows XP, but the disc that came with my computer says that I am running a newer version.  Not sure if I want to re-load that anyway, because I don't know what I would lose in the process.
Again, I am running XP, SERVICE PACK 2.    Am I fighting a lost cause, and forever living in a world of tiny fonts and icons?   Thanks! Can you post, what WEB site it was?  Wish I could remember...sorry.In Device MANAGER what is listed as your Display Adapter?

Solve : "Safely Remove Hardware"?

Answer»

I have an external HDD attached by a USB cable to my laptop. I'm not running ANY programs and yet when I try to "Safely Remove Hardware", I get the error "The device 'Generic volume' cannot be stopped because a program is still accessing it." I've logged off and logged back on and still no success. Last time I tried to turn off the external HDD but it caused a huge problem. I had to remove the drive from the CASE and reformat it on my desktop computer as a secondary HDD because it was just not formatting as an external. Why is this happening and how do I fix it? :-?Laptop make and model? Operating system? USB 1 or 2? Hard drive make, model and age? Did it ever work? Any information to work on at all?

See below.LAPTOP: Dell XPS M140 - 1.73GHz, 0.99 GB RAM - Intel Centrino - Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 SERVICE Pack 2

USB: 2

External HDD: Galaxy TVisto - Western Digital 320 GB

TVisto is an external HDD that can be connected to the TV to watch Movies, Pictures and play Music. It can also hold other stuff like a normal HDD but that only shows when connected to the computer. I added movies and it worked fine. I reconnected it to my laptop to add more movies and when it was done I couldn't "Safely Remove.."

More info??I am having the same problem removing my flash memory drives.I am getting the same message above using a USB flash drive and  also these  other messages. See screen images below: (POSTED to Imageshack)

http://img380.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ejectusbproblem1acx1.jpgThe problem the both of you may be experiencing may be caused by software that's running in the background.

Even though your computer is not showing any open applications...there may be programs like antivirus or backup software running in the background.

If you have any programs that are actively scanning these drives or programs that are constantly monitoring chages to your hard drive, then disable them and then try to safely remove your USB device.I turned off both my firewall and my virus software, the problem remained!
It has to be some Windows service, maybe indexing or some other. I wish
the operating system would tell the name of the program or service accessing
the drive! Process Explorer will tell you what you need to know...Process explorer help not working, how do I tell which drive is being accessed, and
by what process or object?More images from recommended software, process explorer and filemon:

Looks to me that drive has been corrupted...save your data and re-format it.

I found this article on microsoft support news group!

Bob'post starts here-----------------------------
USB drive "drive H"" - has mpg,ppt files on it.
Closed all windows
from systray I chose stop/eject etc =
The device "Generic Volume" cannot be stopped right now try stopping the
device again later.
at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555665/en-us
I did as they said - useless

My drive letter is H - I enter it into that program  - lots of stuff
listed none have ANY reference to H: drive ( as far as I can see - stuff
like HKLM\...  svchost and IE)
check device mgr for the usb drive and it shows - "optimize for quick
removal" - in which case the "safely remove" icon is not used - per the
DESCRIPTION right there on the dev mgr properties page. So why does it
show up then ??  Anyway to not have it appear unless needed ?

----------------post ends----------------------------------------------

The Microsoft web article states how to fix problem. Please review this article, and
advise me. thank you.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555665/en-us I also have an external HDD attached by a USB cable to my laptop. I try to "Safely Remove Hardware", I get the error "The device 'Generic volume' cannot be stopped because a program is still accessing it." I've logged off and logged back on and still no success. Also tried a restore point. I am running windows vista home premium x86.

Anyone got a fix for me.Please start a new topic, RATHER than tack your question onto this old discussion thread.

Solve : Corrupter driver for DVD drive?

Answer»

Have a Compaq Presario c500 and its DVD RW drive is not working due to a corrupted driver. DVD's brand is OPTIARC and the model is 753A.

Any ideas where to get a working driver??Have you looked---->HERE ?Depending on the flavor of Windows it MAY not need one...but we don't know what you're running...

How old is this drive ?
How does it show up in Device Manager ?As patio said, depending on your VERSION of windows you probably don't need one.  If it's XP and it's not working properly, your HARDWARE is probably bad.  However, you're gonna have to post more information for any of us to truly help out.
