Answer» Hi, What's on this DVDR disk ? ? It does not matter, I've TRIED with burned data discs and burned video discs. Btw, I tried it with another RW and it does not read it.That's why i asked what's on it...if it didn't read in another drive it's possible it wasn't burned correctly. You could try INSTALLING ISOBuster and see. patio. 8-)Quote That's why i asked what's on it...if it didn't read in another drive it's possible it wasn't burned correctly. Solve : laptop needs new harddrive?? |
Answer» I ran McAfee virus scan on my laptop (Dell Inspirion 1100) and the next day it crashed. The scan detected some infected files and removed them. The next day I turned it booted up but there was no start menu or icons displaying. I called Dell and we ran a check on my laptop, they suggested it needed a new hard drive which costs almost $200. Can I purchase the harddrive some where else and install it myself. I am kind of confused, can someone explain it to me and with any suggestions. I'd like to know how they came to the conclusion that you need a new hard drive. I got the same feeling.Someone would rather sell a $200.00 'not'"so they say" hard drive than address the problem. So what programs did they run with the phone? Do you have restore on a hidden partition? Do you have your restore DISK? I was told to partition and format the disk, but when I entered Windows Setup the following MESSAGE appeared: The file mountmgr.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue. Setup failed. What do I do from here? Thanks Quote I was told to partition and format the disk, but when I entered Windows Setup the following message appeared: The file mountmgr.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue. Setup failed. Did this happen with your restore disk being used.If so you may have a faulty restore disk. Did you have windows XP or, 2000? I would check the hard drive for fitness with the free diagnostics from the appropriate drive maker's site. If you don't know what kind you have, use SeaTools from www.seagate.com Post back with the results. |

Solve : Can't get into bios!!? |
Answer» I have an old Dell Lattitude DPi D266XT laptop. I am trying to upgrade the HARD drive and install new memory. I am trying to save the data from the old drive to an Apricorn hard drive ezzzzy upgrade kit. The kit comes with a CD that you must put in your computer and boot from at startup. The problem I am having is that when I try to enter the bios by hitting F1 (BIOS revision AO3) to boot from CD rom drive I can not get into the bios. I have hit from F1-F12 and nothing will get me in. If I hit escape it brings me to a screen that has a C> prompt. Any idea what I might try next??? As always, thank you in advance for your help!! What happens when you try and get in? Nothing? Have you tried pressing the Delete key?Calum, I have tried the delete key and it takes me to the same screen when I push escape. It is not a C:> prompt it just shows alot of C:>'s and then Windows starts up.I should to me like your hitting the Key to late. on most Dell's you have to Press F2 for Bios , so i recommend you mash the f2 button lots of times as soon as you hit the power button. on your lap top the the screen warm up fast enough for you to SEE the Dell splash screen that comes on as soon as you boot? That's very strange. If I'm unsure about which key to press, I keep pressing F1-F12 and Delete until the BIOS comes up. If you've tried all of that and it doesn't work, I don't know what to say. Have you just tried booting from the CD in case it's already set higher than the HDD in the boot order? Just a thought, it might save you having to enter the BIOS. Edit: Also, what panboy said above. Lol.Calum & panboy, Thank you both for the help! OK I tried F2 and I'm pounding it continuosly as it POWERS up and as the screen comes up(and yes, I see that misserable DELL splash!!) and as it is running thru certain checks. I have tried booting the CD with no luck. Here is exacty what comes up: A quick flash that says something like this is property of Dell Computers........ then I get this: Crystalware Audio Initilization Action Utility Version 272 Configured for Plug n Play Plug n Play bios detected WINDOWS\Ipconfig/Release_all This program can not be running in DOS mode C:\> C:\>Rem[Header] C:\> C:\>Rem[CD-Rom Drive] c:\> C:\> Rem[Miscellaneous] C:\> C:\> C:\> - that's the cursor to the left, but I can't TYPE anything when it's blinking. Then after a 15 second wait it starts up Windows. This happens no matter which buttons I push F1-F12 and delete. Since you do get to see the splash screen it should say what key you have to press to enter set up, it might be that you have to push 2 keys at once. it will either say it at the top left of the Screen or right in the middle at the bottom. once you find out what Key to push you'll be half way there ^.^ What version of windows are you running there , the Boot pattern seems kinda weird http://docs.us.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/pmojav/specs.htm U have your self quite an old Lappy there , you Need to push the key and the F1 key to enter set up The magick of GOOGLE told mePanboy, You smarter than the average bear!!! Got me right in!!! Thanks again to you and Calum for your help!!! Have a great New Year!!Well done, glad you got it sorted thanks to panboy. Have a good new year.Happy new your to Yall as well And remember we can all pretend to be smart like me , if we steal the thoughts and ideas of others trough the power of google ^.^Quote Happy new your to Yall as well panboy--->Calums word 'Chortles' is what you just did to me. panboy do yall say yall in Ireland? :-? |

Solve : Disk Cleanup.....? |
Answer» I'm hoping that SOMEONE can please help fix this problem I'm having. What possessed you to compress the files on that drive to begin with ? ? I actually never compressed anything so I don't even know why my computer has any compress stuff.Let it run and grab a nap...Quote Let it run and grab a nap... LOL I'm actually going to let it run all night to see it cleans up. ThanksWhen Disk Cleanup indicates it is scanning Compress Old Files what it is doing is compressing files which were created or modified n DAYS ago. n is a number of days which the user sets up by ALLOWING Disk Cleanup to run to completion at which point it produces an on-screen report. SCROLL to Compress Old Files in that report and highlight it. Then click on Options and a window will show the number of days which have been set. The number of days can be changed to suit. You can also untick Compress Old Files so that no compression will be done. Compressed filenames are usually displayed in color (blue?). Good luckNo doubt this drive is formatted as NTFS which slows things down in my experience. Are you using any particular program to do this or just Windows Disk Cleanup utility? If you go to IE/Tools/Internet Options Options and delete your temporary internet files there and THEN do your cleanup it will be quicker. You may want to look at CCleaner which does all of this and more and is free and highly recommended by us. (Just uncheck the Yahoo Toolbar installation option when loading.) Free at www.ccleaner.comQuote
Thanks! I downloaded CCleaner and it help a lot! Now quick question how do I do this: untick Compress Old Files so that no compression will be done? Quote When Disk Cleanup indicates it is scanning Compress Old Files what it is doing is compressing files which were created or modified n days ago. n is a number of days which the user sets up by allowing Disk Cleanup to run to completion at which point it produces an on-screen report. There is another method but it requires a registry edit. See here.. Good luck |

Solve : CD/DVD drive won't play audio Cd's.? |
Answer» Alright. Hopefully SOMEONE can help. When I put a audio Cd in my computer, it asks what I want to do with it. Play, rip, burn. etc... well when I CLICK on play. It says the extension doesn't work. It is very annoying. I talked with dell, my computer manufacturer , and they sent me a new CD-drive to replace the old one and I'm still having the same problem so it isn't the drive. Any ideas? If you need anymore INFO I'll be happy to give it to you. Thanks.Yes, more information is always needed. What happened prior to this? Other issues with the machine? Have you added or removed software or hardware lately? I am assuming it has not always been this way so when did it work last and what has changed?I'm pretty sure it started happening when I completely wiped windows and reinstalled a fresh copy because I had a virus/spyware problem.. After I reinstalled windows XP, my machine wouldn't find any audio devices, but I just installed the DRIVERS. It may have also happened when I installed Itunes. I tried uninstalling Itunes, but it still doesn't work. The only hardware that has changed is the replacement of the exact same CD drive model that I put in today and still didn't work. I don't really think Itunes was the cause though. If you need more information just ask. What SOUND drivers did you install ? ? |

Solve : ReInstalling Drivers, Win98, For Internet Connecti? |
Answer» I recently reinstalled windows 98 on my desktop computer, wiping the old hardrive clean. The disc i used to reinstall was from a friend and not the original win98 the PC had. The look of it is obviously more primitive (if that makes sence), my BEST guess is because it's not SE. If you don't know anything about the hardware, download on another machine and run on this one Everest Home. Make a report and post it here if you do not understand how to find the right drivers. ONLY the correct ones will work! Thanks, i've succesfully run Everest Home on the problem computer and i have a diagnostic of it's contents. Now how do I determine how to find the right driver information?Post the contents here, or attach the file etc. so we can advise. Unfortunately, I can't transfer the report to this computer as the problem PC has no internet and won't allow me to save the data to a disc. Is there any specific information i can find to relay?Save the report to the desktop and copy it to a floppy...Ok, so i've concluded i need the following drivers: -Davicom CNet CN200 Pro Fast Ethernet Adapter -Harmonics (Conexant) Data/Fax/Remote TAM Modem Ofcourse, I Google'd them and the only posotive leads I got to were pay sites. If I'm going to drop some bucks to get these drivers, whats the best site for the job? Also is there any way i can get them free? Thanks. If you could copy and paste the whole report here that would be a whole lot better. I can see NO reason to ever pay for drivers.Quote Ok, so i've concluded i need the following drivers: www.driverguide.com could be your answer. |

I looked everywhere and could only find one file that is supposed to work from the floppy and not have to use the "C" Drive. To be real simple on this, I'm waiting for a new HDD to get here and then I'll have a complete unit. However, until then, I was trying to get the CD installed so later it will be easier to install a complete OS. You simply boot the machine with your Windows CD and it will install from there. There is no way to install drivers without a hard drive and no need. What operating system are you planning on installing? I could not find a link for this model number. What is the hardware description? I am assuming a laptop? So are you saying you don't have a boot disk for drive A: ? What Operating system are you trying to install? Like GX1_Man pointed out the correct model number would help us to ASSIST you.OK, here goes. The Computer is a TOSHIBA 330CDS/4.0, Model # PH1272U VCD. The CD is a TEAC CD-220EA CD Mod.Ver. -32, Part # 19770410-32. The system also has a TEAC FD-05HG 5686U, Part # 19307556-86 1.4 Floppy Drive. The whole thing is, I'm going to load Windows 95 and have the disk here. The way I found out that the CD isn't installed is I put the Win.95 CD in and the system won't even try to read it. It says to insert a system disk in drive "A:\" and press any key. I thought that if there were any other problems, now would be the time to find them, when I have time to workon it, rather than latter when I'm expecting to be able to use it. Make Sence? Clear as Mud HUH. Retired_Sarge I see. Well Windows 95 CD's, unlike Windows XP CD's, are not bootable. So you will indeed need a bootdisk with working CD Rom drivers. Do you have Windows 95, or Windows 95b?A windows 95 start up disk may or may not have APPROPRIATE CD drivers. I would download a free Win98SE boot disk and boot with that. It will identify the correct CD drive LETTER to install with. www.bootdisk.com will give you a download file. Double click on it with a blank floppy in the drive and it will create the Win98SE boot floppy. When the hard drive is in, type in from the a:> fdisk and press enter Create primary drive and choose to allow all drive space and make it active. Then reboot with the boot disk and from the a:> type in: format c:/u and press enter the X:setup and press enter (where X is the letter actually assigned to the CDROM. You will see it on screen. If you have an original Windows 95a then the procedure will have to altered, due to the limitations of the file systems it sees. |

Solve : won't accept flash drive? |
Answer» My Inspiron 2650 won't accept any brand of flash drive. I am running Windows XP. I tried to plug in a flash drive 1 year ago, and it would not work then. Recently I bought SEVERAL other brands, and no luck. I called Dell and asked for their help. I have talked to Dell for literally 12 hours over the last 3 days. They finally told me the reason was that my hard drive was failing, and I needed to replace it. However, I do not have any problems with my COMPUTER other than this flash drive thing. |
