Hey, I just recently installed a new dual-boot on my PC with Ubuntu Linux & good 'ol Windows XP.

Well, Ubuntu picked up my Westell 6100 modem perfectly and no WORK on my end was required.

Now with Windows, there is not even a LAN connection showing up in my "Network Connections".

It does inform me that new hardware was FOUND but can not find the correct driver for the Ethernet Controller.

... and if any of you have had experience with Verizon DSL discs, they are a pain in the *censored*.

So I suppose I'm asking if anyone knows where I can get this Ethernet Controller driver?

I tried installing the Nvidia Nforce, but I'm not sure if that was correct (CONSIDERING it didn't help much).

I suspect you will find them on the Mainboard driver disk that came with your machine.

Unless it is an add-on card then a driver disk would have came with the card.

After installing them and re-booting it should AUTOMATICALLY detect your modem

Get a brand new IDE cable and hook it up by itself on IDE #2...this will tell you if it works or needs replaced.

I agree with patio but, I would try uninstalling the camera from add/remove programs and see what happens.

Did you just now add this camera?

Also,If you right click on my computer icon,then click manage,then click device manager,then double click on DVD/CD-ROM drives,does your lite-on dvdr show up there,or is it missing?

I have a lite-on dvd rom. It is SOHW-1633s. I am running windows xp pro. When you press eject it tries to open but fails. Then it will load in explorer and show the info that is on the cd in the drawer.

well i searched it and i did everything that was suggested and all to no avail.....but lo and behold i just kept working with the button and the paper clip and it finally started opening and i kept working with and it started opening and now it opens every time i touch the button.(wonders for how long :-/)

What is your RECOMMENDATION? :-/You could either look it up with your service tag, use Everest Home, or check the specifications for a stock machine, if no addin card is in a slot. (Where do your speakers PLUG in - an expansion slot or off the motherboard?)

I need some help because I don't know what's really the problem. I purchased an HP Pavilion m7670 two weeks ago. It's CD/DVD driver works good with original movie DVDs and CDs of all sorts (original / burned). But when I try to put a DVDR on it, it keeps reading it (the light on the driver goes on and off) but Windows does not read it. (I recently noticed that it can read a DVD-RW disc).

The driver is a TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H652L.

Does anyone know why is this happening? Is anyone having the same problem?

That's why i asked what's on it...if it didn't read in another drive it's possible it wasn't burned correctly.

You could try installing ISOBuster and see.

Now I'm not sure if it's the drivers or what it is, but whenever you plug something into the toshiba satellite, such as an EXTERNAL HDD, it'll install correctly, then say that windows had some kind of error (this will be in a balloon event) and it didn't install correctly. Nothing seems to work right, external HDDs, mouses, etc.

I'll provide more info if NEEDED.Much more info needed. Well I was kinda in a hurry to post, and I was only at his house for a little bit.

hello. so i brought my PC into the shop to get it reformatted because it was infested with viruses and not working very well. i pick it up yesterday, PLUG everything back, and now everything works fine except the sound. it TELLS me it can't detect any audio device. everything is plugged is as it was before. do I need a driver or something? i went to control panel and fiddled around but i couldn't figure it out. anyone have any ideas on what is wrong and how I should fix it? How do i roll BACK a graphics card driver in WINDOWS XP home. my graphics card is a Geforce 7800Crafty..... click start/control panel/system/Hardware Tab/Device Manager/Display Adapters..... double click on yours....... when properties box opens for your vid card....... click on the roll back driver.

Any ideas as to what went wrong? :-?Might be worth a reinstall since it is relatively fresh and you have the CD's. After the install the correct sequence is chipset drivers then the video drivers from the HP site only (Street sent you a link). I would not use ANY driver from anywhere other than HP. It may seem like a good idea, but no.I was at my local London Drugs today, it seems I'm not the only one with the problem I had.
They have been fielding a few calls a day from PEOPLE with the same problem after upgrading to Internet Explorer 7
They figure there will be a PATCH coming out eventually.

It came with a CD which SELF installs the correct driver for my OS. (?)

BUT having bought an relatively old game for Christmas, (Call of Duty), I was very disappointed that it wouldn't play. The graphics are all spikey across the SCREEN and I cannot make anything out.
SO, I contacted Activision and spoke with a really nice chap, who suggested that it be a problem with the driver. Also, Mobility suggests a Laptop, which I do not have.
Along I troll to ATI's site and post of a ticket. Got a reply which tells me to find out what card I actually have. On the control panel for the card it clearly states MOBILITY/RADEON. So far since reposting the answer back to ATI they have not responded.

You are my last hope before I sell the card......

If you are familiar with these, you might also know that they use CATALYST for some part of the driver. But when I run the download to install it says I do not have the required Hardware?? or doah !!

Also, I am not sure if I uninstalled the generic driver which is for the onboad graphic chip. I did find S3 stuff, which I dumped, then dumped the Radeon driver, got back to a failsafe screen, then reloaded the Radeon stuff. Everything seemed to be OK, except when it went to standby, it upset the desktop when it came back to life.

Coffee TIME......DLoad and run Everest Home and it will tell you every component in that machine.
I suspect they didn't sell you what you asked for but let's WAIT for the Everest report before jumping to any conclusions.

You would need to post a lot of info like the computer make.model, age, what software being used, what type of DVD player, what brand of DVD media, has this ever worked correctly, if so what has changed, etc.

I am running Windows 98 Second Edition...
I ran debug and determined that my graphics card is
STB Velocity 128 (NV3T) Version 1.21...

This computer ran beautifully until on JAN 1 something (maybe a virus) happened and I had to reinstall the OS, WIN98SE...

Since then no matter what I do, I cannot correct
the problem with the screen resolution being stuck
in the 480X640 Resolution and only 16 colors.
So of course you know what the screen looks like...yuck!

I would appreciate any help finding the correct monitor and/or screen adaptor drivers and INSTALLING them.
I have searched for them and cannot seem to locate the proper drivers to download and install. If anyone KNOWS how to correct this problem, where to successfully find the correct drivers and install them successfully...I would be so happy...

Well, I thought I should update, since it's been several days...

I've been going back and forth with the techies at NCSoft (the COMPANY that makes Guild Wars), running a PROGRAM called AquaMark3 at their request, and the conclusion is that I need a new video card, there is something wrong with the old one. Perhaps this was getting ready to happen, and the driver changes pushed it over the edge? It's an INTEGRATED video card, which means it was eating up memory anyway.

That's the bad news. The good news is that a friend says he's going to send me a dedicated video card, which I can INSTALL in the AGP slot in my system. So while I'm waiting for it to arrive, I'm going to learn all I can before attempting this. I don't want any more botched jobs on my part.

Tanith HMMM, I believe it's rather unusual for onboard video to fail. So, I'm glad your friend is sending you one rather you buying one, in case it does not solve the problem.

Do you have a mute button on your keyboard that may be at issue ?
Have you clicked start/run ...and in the run box type ...... dxdiag and then click enter ...when the new window opens , click on the sound tabs one at a time and run the tests ......let us know the results.
Is the issue your speakers or the mic or both ....your post is a LITTLE vague.
do you have the speakers and mic plugged into the correct JACKS ?
Did your sound and mic work before you formatted?
Are you certain the drivers for the sound card are all installed ?

Hi, I hope this the right PLACE for this topic. My PROBLEM is that devices connected to my PC through USB are not dislayed anywhere, neither in the device manager, nor in Explorer and "My computer" (only a listing of USB controllers in the device manager). Connected hardware communicates however with the PC as it should. In the past this was no problem. I don't know what has changed. The OS is Windows XP Home Edition SP2; the motherboard is an ASUS P4PE-X/SE with BIOS version 7.07.01. Can anybody help me out?This sounds like they weren't properly dis-connected using the USB device manager in the system tray...

Here's what you can try though.
Dis-connect all USB devices and do 2 clean boots and power down.
Re-boot and go to Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager.
Find all instances of USB, right clik them and select remove.
You will get a warning message...IGNORE it.
Shut down and re-boot.
After completing startup power down the machine again.
Re-connect the USB devices ONE AT A TIME and power up and repeat the shutdown power up sequence for each device...

Also if you are running an external HDD on that machine go back to Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager.

Right clik on all the USB hubs and select Properties. Under the Power Tab turn off "Let Windows turn off this device to save power"...

It is a default setting in Windows and should not be on. Period.

My computer doesn't detect my video card (ATI radeon x800 xt), my monitor (dell m993c), or my network adapter. My system recently crashed, because one of the DRIVES in the RAID 1 array failed. I tried removing the video card from its slot in the motherboard and reinserting it, but that didn't work. I think it's an OS problem.

How do I get my computer to recognize these devices? Help please. Really only one thread is REQUIRED and you have responses in the other, so I will lock this one.

I stall windows ME in IBM OLD PC. I download and have the drivers for that in my NTFS format external harddisk. So I cannot install the drivers. How can I format that drivers to FAT32 , I mean just one folder that include the drivers? I hope U know it. Thanks everybody.Copy the folder to the internal DRIVE in another machine that can read NTFS and burn to a CD and all will be well. The format has nothing to do with this EXCEPT WinME can not read NTFS. Formatting referres to the drive NOT the individual folder characteristics.

There are other ways, but this is the easiest.

Okay I have a CRW drive model 4824AH made by ASUS. I need a DRIVER for it..mine is corrupted. I tried to uninstall it and reboot but it didn't work. I can't FIND the driver anywhere not even on ASUS.com. Should I just give up and buy a new CRW drive??

thanks!CD Drivers are BUILT into Windows. Did you delete it in Device Manager? If so, a simple reboot should solve it. You were not clear on how you uninstalled it, or why. What preceeded all of this?

If the drive is defective that is ANOTHER story.Have you tried system restore to an earlier time?

What is your manufacturer and model number of the computer?I uninstalled it through device manager because the driver's were defective and when I troubleshooted it through my Compaq help it recommended to uninstall and reboot.

Hello all,
Recently i formatted my pc, and as it happens i've LOST my driver discs. However, i do KNOW what type of MOTHERBOARD i have, it being a PC CHIPS board. I went to their website and downloaded the VGA video and GRAPHICS drivers and sound driver. These were downloaded as zip folders. What i would like to know is, where would i unzip these folders? which part of the windows system folders is relevent to this?

Thanks alot for your help.Why not make a folder called AUDIO and unzip the files there. Ditto for the video. You can run the file from there (if an .exe file) or direct Windows to search for the drivers there if not.

Hi, for awhile now I have been having this weird graphics problem that has textures either stretched out or all over my screen. I also have these very small red and green dots when my computer is loading up. It started shortly after I installed new drivers. However, I had my anti-virus running accidently during the installation and this is probably what screwed it up. I dont know how to fix this, can anyone help? Can you roll back to the previous drivers and see if the condition goes away ? ?
They might be newer drivers but they also might be the wrong ones.

Other than that you could try disconnecting from the web, disabling your protection and re-installing them...

patio. 8-)I tried a different monitor and got the same results. The screenshots are from City of Heroes, but I have this problem with every game I have played so far, which includes BF2142 and Titan Quest.Do you have the original device drivers that shipped with the cards ? ?
I would re-install those following the instructions i posted from NVidia's site...well I tried reinstalling the drivers that came with my computer and it seemed to help a bit. It happens a LITTLE bit less now but its still there. I wonder what is causing the problem? A friend said it might be a bad setting somewhere. There are more red and green pixels(the dots I mentioned earlier) on my screen and when I try to run a video my computer pauses for a couple of seconds and then unpauses. I ran McAfee virus scan on my laptop (Dell Inspirion 1100) and the next day it crashed. The scan detected some infected files and removed them. The next day I turned it booted up but there was no start menu or icons displaying. I called Dell and we ran a check on my laptop, they suggested it needed a new hard drive which costs almost $200. Can I purchase the harddrive some where else and install it myself. I am kind of confused, can someone explain it to me and with any suggestions.

I was told to partition and format the disk, but when I entered Windows Setup the following message appeared: The file mountmgr.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue. Setup failed.

I have a new EVGA 7300GT 512MB PCI-E video card and WIN XP will not retain video driver after the REQUIRED reboot. I have tried a different card and its driver but upon reboot it reverts to XP's VGA driver. Have uninstalled each card, cleaned the registry and reinstalled with same result. I have been unsuccessful in saving anything using my CDRW drive. I get the message that the disks are not formatted, but then when I try, I get the message that they cannot be formatted. I don't know what to do. :-? HELP!

Igot it from a friend a few years ago and the hardrive got messed up. Ijust replaced it and loaded win2000 pro. it mostly works fine except that it will only display 16 colors, it seems to be only vga COMPATABLE right now. Ithink it NEEDS a driver or something, when i check my device manager it tells me no driver is installed(code 28) I looked it up in faq and it said to reinstall the driver.
I guess for now my question is how do i dind out what driver i need? I am having a hard time figuring out what hardware the pc has, how do i look this up?

When Disk Cleanup indicates it is scanning Compress Old Files what it is doing is compressing files which were created or modified n days ago. n is a number of days which the user sets up by allowing Disk Cleanup to run to completion at which point it produces an on-screen report.

[highlight]Scroll to Compress Old Files in that report and highlight it.[/highlight] Then click on Options and a window will show the number of days which have been set. The number of days can be changed to suit. [highlight]You can also untick Compress Old Files so that no compression will be done.[/highlight]
Compressed filenames are usually displayed in color (blue?).

I am trying to hook up my COMPUTER to a photo printer in another room in the house. I have downloaded the driver for the HP Photosmart 7760 successfully and it will not allow me to use the other printer from my computer. I download video's into a softward program and want to print them on photo PAPER and my printer will not provide the quality of the photo printer.How are you hooking it up ? ?

You neglected to provide this important info...From what I understant which isn't much at this point in time I am HOOKED up to the other computer in the house by a modem and a router which would make me think that my computer can be hooked up to the other printer. You haven't mentioned what operating system your using on the machines or if you have set them up to file SHARE and use a shared printer .

Just a quick question. I have an external hard drive (DriveStation USB2.0 External Hard Drive - 250GB made by Buffalo Technology) and I had recently deleted all the data on it to CLEAN it up. But when I checked the memory capacity I FOUND this info below:

USED Space: 3.13 GB
Total Space: 232 GB

I just want to know what is using up 3.13 GB when the drive is completely empty?? I think its one of those hidden files/invisible program or whatever but I really need to clear out all the used memory. There are a few on the Ultimate Boot CD to use INCLUDING KillDisk which will wipe everything.

It is the way drive space is calculated. 250 gig on the label does NOT equal 250 gig real usable space, ever.

Alright. Hopefully SOMEONE can help. When I put a audio Cd in my computer, it asks what I want to do with it. Play,rip, burn. etc... well when I CLICK on play. It says the extension doesn't work. It is very annoying. I talked with dell, my computer manufacturer , and they sent me a new CD-drive to replace the old one and I'm still having the same problem so it isn't the drive. Any ideas? This should be one of the first steps...if this does not resolve your issue then dload and run Everest Home and post a report of what's in that machine.

You have PRESENTED Profiler as a hardware item. :-?

So here we are waiting........................Com1 can be a number of many devices already connected such as ( old serial mouse, or Dial-Up MODEM ) these devices normally use Com2,3,4 but does the profiler ACCEPT Com2 if your system has a Com2 port... :-/

Also remember that Com1 and Com3 share an interrupt and Com 2 and Com4 normally share an Interrupt and can conflict between devices at Com1 and Com3, Com2 and Com4 .... Dave

My computer (Fujitsu LAPTOP) is not recognizing my CD Rom drive (toshiba).

In device manager, it sees that it's there, but has a YELLOW "!"

When I go to "My Computer" it doesn't see the CD drive, and I can't burn or play CD's.

Called Fujitsu, and while the tech support tried to help, we uninstalled and reinstalled the CD drive and downloaded a couple of drivers, NOTHING worked.

Any ideas, short of reloading Windows from scratch (Tech support's suggestion)?

If that is what they are suggesting they must KNOW something. It would be helpfiul to know what the issue is that results in the yellow exclamation. That can be helpful info to have.Under properties for the CD drive, I get:

"Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device."

The troubleshooting steps don't work.

The tech wanted me to reinstall Windows because that's all she could come up with.

On the device page, under driver, I uninstalled the driver and reinstalled the herdware, but it still gives me the same error (code 37).

My suspicion is that I need to find a clean copy of the driver.

we just installed DIRECTTV NETWORKS on our system. Before this our tv tuner card worked. Now we cannot get STATIONS to come in on our TELEVISION as we COULD before. Message SAYS driver not installed . Now we cannot find the disk (or the correct one ).

We don't know what you are running...I've seen before also where you can have a device draw too much power on your USB port and cause the port to shut off and it can be intermittent if you are borderline maximum amperage draw.

I had this happen with a Non-Power Injected 5-port USB HUB and 5 Pen Drives plugged in at the same time.

The fix was to get a USB HUB with power injection for $20

You could also power your phone off just a powered HUB with an AC Adapter vs drawing on your systems power supply when charging...

Just Some ideas ..... :-/I am running XP. It seems to just randomly turn on and off. Sometimes, although the phone was charging for ~8 hours, it will only be 1/4 charged. Maybe I am having a power issue...Well, my spex are in my sig. Does it look like I should be having a power issue?

I recently reinstalled windows 98 on my desktop computer, wiping the old hardrive clean. The disc i used to reinstall was from a friend and not the original win98 the PC had. The look of it is obviously more primitive (if that makes sence), my BEST guess is because it's not SE.

My only issue with the newly installed Win98 is that it won't connect to the internet. I checked some of the hardware on the control panel and low and behold everything to help me connect is adorned with a (!), being the PCI Communication Device, PCI Ethernet Controller, PCI Input Controller, and PCI MULTIMEDIA Audio Device. When i try to fix the problem i get the message: The DRIVERS for this device are not installed (Code 28) and then to reinstall the drivers. It gives you the option of checking what drivers I want Windows to search for the DRIVER in, but nothing seems to work.

Is there any way i can fix this? Can i download the drivers i need online?You need to re-install the Mainboard drivers that came with your machine.
These will be more specialised than any Win98 drivers...If you don't know anything about the hardware, download on another machine and run on this one Everest HOME. Make a report and post it here if you do not understand how to find the right drivers. ONLY the correct ones will work!

Ok, so i've concluded i need the following drivers:

-Davicom CNet CN200 Pro Fast Ethernet Adapter
-Harmonics (Conexant) Data/Fax/Remote TAM Modem

Ofcourse, I Google'd them and the only posotive leads I got to were pay sites. If I'm going to drop some bucks to get these drivers, whats the best site for the job? Also is there any way i can get them free? Thanks.

I am trying to install a cd into a "Toshiba, 330CD" I just picked up. PROBLEM is there is no HDD. So all I have is my floppy "A" DRIVE. I looked everywhere and could only find one file that is supposed to work from the floppy and not have to use the "C" Drive.
It listed the following Autoexec.bat, and Config.sys files.

No valid CD-ROM device drives selected.

Anyone have any ideas, I've used up everything I've ever learned with no luck?

To be real simple on this, I'm waiting for a new HDD to get here and then I'll have a complete unit. However, until then, I was trying to get the CD installed so later it will be easier to install a complete OS.

My Inspiron 2650 won't accept any brand of flash drive. I am running Windows XP. I tried to plug in a flash drive 1 year ago, and it would not work then. Recently I bought SEVERAL other brands, and no luck. I called Dell and asked for their help. I have talked to Dell for literally 12 hours over the last 3 days. They finally told me the reason was that my hard drive was failing, and I needed to replace it. However, I do not have any problems with my COMPUTER other than this flash drive thing.
Anyone experience this problem with flash drives?Well just for grins I would download the free diagnostics from the appropriate drive MAKER's site and test that drive for fitness pronto.

What did they think the issue was? You're talking about a memory card of some sort or a USB pen drive? What brands have not worked?brands I tried Iomagic, sony, Pny and none of them worked.
I ran a chkdsk and it said there were 7 million allocation units, and 3 million 700 thousand available.
I get the feeling Dell just got tired of working on my problem and not finding answers, so they just said 'your hard drive needs replacing' to get out of helping me further. Lets face it, I can't prove them wrong, although I am not having problems using the computer. It just won't find any DRIVERS for the flash drive.

And did you test your hard drive? Do you have Service Pack 2 loaded?You may have to do a lot of reading at usbman site but,
you may as well be familiar with it.....You'll be there again.

How do I determine the drive manufacturer? The lartop is a dell INSPIRION but I'm sure they just assembled someone's driver.

Ok, I am looking for a driver for a Samsung SN-324F cd rom. It's going into a Gateway laptop RUNNING XP. I will have to put it on a flash drive to LOAD it onto the laptop.CD DRIVES don't need drivers under XPWhat happens if you just PLUG it in and power it up? Is it seen correctly in the BIOS and then in Windows? If so you are set.
