Solve : if install wrong drivers, any problem??

Answer»

I was ever told to install the wrong DRIVERS for
Twinhead efio121il.
In that I installed drivers for H12M
I told to my SENIOR but we GOT no time
n so was forced to install the wrong drivers for customer.
What will happen? I am still thinking .

The equipment may or may not work, or not work correctly. It depends on the component, which you didn't elaborate on. Some are identical between some nearly identical models.

You can probably find the correct drivers and install them from device manager. Sometimes things are in Add and Remove Programs in Control Panel, but usually not.

Wonder what happened. :-?
Being the optimist that I am, I am sure he called the customer and ENCOURAGED him to bring the machine back in, apologize for their shoddy work ethic, and installed the correct drivers from a trusted and appropriate web site. Perhaps he gave him some a partial refund, FREE service in the future, or some blank DVD's to further make up for their bad behavior. I am still thinking too...lots of BSODs hahaha sucks. sorry I hate BSOD. I've had my share of them, and I'm still fighting them right now.

Solve : Problem with SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio?

Answer»

Seasons greetings all.

I hope this is the correct forum to post this. My sound has not been working for some time. There is no "speaker" icon in the tray, and when I look at Multimedia properties the whole audio page is greyed out and nothing can be clicked on. Clicking on System, there are yellow exclamation marks next to SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio and Wave Device for Voice Modem.

The device status for Soundmax says QUOTE

"This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed (code 10). Try upgrading the device drivers for this device."

When I click the buttons to do that, it says Quote
"the best driver Windows found is already installed for this device."

For the Wave Device it says Quote
"The drivers for this device are not installed (code 28). To reinstall the drivers for this device, click reinstall driver."

Doing the latter gets me Quote
"unable to locate a driver."

I think I also had the yellow marks on the Soundbaster PCI128 Legacy device and Creative Labs PCI128 Sound Blaster at one point, but these were probably fixed by the buttons because Device manager says they are working properly. Sorry to be so vague.

I have Windows 98 SE, but that's all I know. I downloaded Everest to give you more info, but this programme freezes my computer as soon as it is loaded. I'm sure there is something else wrong as my computer always goes "nee-nar, nee-nar" like an ambulance when it's booting or when I load any programmes; also when I exit programmes and shut down. Do I need to move forum and try to fix this problem first?

I run AVG, Ad-Aware and Spybot regularly, and occasionally CWS Shredder, Cureit & Stinger. I have the old SpywareBlaster but not updated it to the new thingy.

Sorry this is all I can produce ATM. Please bear in mind I don't understand much about computers at all

Any HELP greatly appreciated....Can you provide us with the manufacturer and model of your computer please?Hi Saviour.
Must have gone to bed just before you replied (I'm in the UK.)

It's manufactured by Time. The main model number is (from invoice) 243T90 333M-2/5591.

On the back is a sticker with another hand-written model number 302-50-243.

Unfortunately, my Mum seems to think this company has gone out of business (I'm trying to fix her computer whilst I'm here.) Also, I know she had it repaired about 2 years ago. They definitely expanded the memory and I think put in a new motherboard and soundcard. I doubt she has a receipt for what was done.

I'm off for about 4 hours now,
Many thanks for your attention. Quote

There are several, perhaps MANY other problems than just the SoundMax (which is NOT a SoundBlaster PCI 128 chip/card). Do you have a real Windows CD to reinstall everything after backing up any important data? THat is the first thing I would do. Once everything is fixed software wise, then we can go looking for the correct drivers.

If there is a hardware fault, it will show up at this time as well, and that will need to be addressed. CHECH to see that all fans are turning INSIDE - the "ambulance sound" may be a heat sensor.Hi guys back now.
Thanks for joining in too GX-1_Man

Bad news. Found the Windows 98 disk from original purchase but it says:

Quote
This CD-ROM is from an older version of Windows than the one you are presently using. Setup functionality from this disk will be disabled.

Sure enough, I cant have a look in the Add/remove programmes BIT on the disk. There is no Windows disk for Windows 98SE, which the repair man must have upgraded to.

Also, backing up will be a huge problem because there is no CD-burner so 10 years worth of stuff will have to go onto floppy disks, lots of images. Only got 2 ATM, LOL!
She could probably have a go at this and just dump loads of stuff, but I would rather avoid if at all possible.

As to the fans, I looked in the back with a torch and couldn't actually see any. Therefore it seemed OK.

There are two grills, one with slits, one with holes so not much to look through. Is it advisable for me to unscrew the shell and take a proper look?Yes, looking is always better than guessing. If the hardware has problems that must be addressed first.

Maybe an external hard drive is called for before you start this adventure. (And perhaps a copy of Windows 2000 or 98SE from eBay. )

Hi GX-1.
Just to let you know why I'm responding a bit slowly ATM, family's all meeting up so very buzy till New Year. I will look inside computer tomorrow and pop on when I can.

Would I need an external drive for backing up? :-?

Thanks,
See ya later J_S
An internal drive would be better if you are going to reinstall Win98 first edition as their USB support was a bit sketchy. It will also be cheaper. Just don't get one too big or the computer BIOS may not be able to deal with it.

Solve : Sound Driver Disconnected?

Answer»

Alright, my problem is that my sound just stopped working partway through me working one day. I was sitting there then the sound just stopped. Like completely stopped. Then that little speaker icon on the icon bar on my start bar just went away.

I TRIED that geek squad thing but all they could tell me without charging $100 was that my sound driver probly got disconnected.

So what I need to KNOW is how to re-connect the driver.

Thankyou in advance,

NickDLoad and run Everest Home and post a log here...this will help us STEER you in the right direction...Geek squad, $100...

Here is Everest Home:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Make a report and copy and past it here. It will take several posts, or zip it up and attach it.

What is the computer or motherboard make and model? Here is the report I zipped it.Go here and use the live update for the correct drivers from MSI:

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download_center.phpOk, I updated the driver for my sound but when it was installing it said that the driver file could not be found. It still installed the update anyway. I restarted my computer and that little speaker symbol on the start bar is back but when I right click it and try to go to volume CONTROL is says that not mixer devices are available. Then is says to go to the control panel to install one.

Right now I'm downloading the other updates for other things.Di dyou get that drive formatted and Windows reinstalled?

Do you have the motherboard CD that came with that? The computer is only about a year old. Straight from the manufacturer. It's been working for months then the sound just stopped.

I have all the cd's that came with the computerThe correct drivers should be on the MBoard driver CD as GX suggested...

So try this . Shut down the machine ...... now press the release mechanism with the paperclip ( you should be able to feel the release ) press the paperclip until the drive door begins to open and then pull it fully open and REMOVE the disk.

As long as you clicked uninstall, it will have uninstalled.

Sorry about the double message....click happy!!

No still not working...

Ok well, other options....is an external cd rom drive expensive?

It sounds like it is trying to find something but not detecting it....making noises. Funny though if the laser was damaged or dirty i dont understand how it could play happily DVD/CDs etc.

GThat's OK, I thought you just hadn't seen my post.
If it's still not working, but reads other disks, is the disk itself damaged?
*slaps self for not thinking of that earlier*
Check and see if there are any scratches or fingerprints, clean the disk gently with a soft cloth.
Wipe the shiny side of the disk from inside to outside.
See if that helps.
Is the problem with all CD-ROMs?
Or just that particular one?
It may be the laser, but I doubt it.No its a brand new disk...dont slap yourself....it may hurt!!!

All a bit bizarre.

Ah well, thanks loads for your help Calum, really appreciate you taking the time.

I have no idea what the problem is....quite frankly thats not a suprise. Thanks trying.

GTry the disk in a different computer. Yes, it seems that the only problem is that one particular disk, so it should be the thing to be examined first, rather than mucking about with your computer settings, uninstalling drivers, etc.

What disk is it? Is it a retail disk or a burned copy?As above.
Would've said try it in a different computer next, but I had to go, it was late.
Suggested by WillyW (in a PM to me) - are you putting the disk in the right way up?
Shiny side down, that is.
Might sound silly, and no OFFENSE intended if it comes across like that, but it's best to try and eliminate every possible cause of the problem, no matter how trivial.Do you have Adobe installed?

Solve : Any need to update monitor driver??

Answer»

Hello,

Recently re-installed Win98SE.

Windows found the MONITOR as a PnP monitor. I believe Windows called it a STANDARD monitor when I looked it up in the list of drivers included with Windows. It did label it A1770NSL.

I had plenty of other stuff to do, to get the computer back to where I wanted it. I COULD see it, it was good enough, - actually, to my eye - it looked good. So I proceeded. Just today, I remembered that I wanted to look into it a bit more.
Figuring on using the newest driver available.....

On the back of the monitor, I found the manufacturers label. Model number is A1770NSL.
Everest reports "Lite-On/Litronic A1770NSL [17" CRT] (907520776)" on the monitor line. This was with the stock Win98 install.... I don't know where Everest gets its info from.....
On the FRONT of the monitor is written NobleView. I'm GUESSING that is just some third party marketing, and that the monitor was really made by Lite-On.

Googled some. Wound up at: http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=8771

I believe that was the right driver. Will somebody knowledgeable kindly have a look and confirm?

Downloaded it.

Used Device Manager to Update Driver.
I believe old driver was dated sometime in 1999. This one is "; Revise date -- 02/23/2000" in the .inf file. That's all the whole thing is... an .inf file.

Installed fine.

I can't see any difference - I suppose I'd have been surprised if I did.

I'm thinking the thing to do right now is nothing. Just leave it with the driver I just downloaded and installed... no need to switch it back. Again, would somebody please confirm?

Question: In all probability, what is the difference in the driver thta Windows found within it's own setup, and the one I downloaded and installed? .... nothing?

Thanks

Windows 98 just installed the latest driver for your monitor that comes with Win98. There isn't really a way to tell if there is a difference, the only difference is that they are new drivers and just a little bit more stable than the old ones provided.CRT monitors usually do not have drivers as such. Occasionally an .inf file is provided with them, but the default plug and play monitor setting is satisfactory.Quote

CRT monitors usually do not have drivers as such.

I'll try to remember that.
Thanks

Quote

[/quote]

Clear enough. Thanks

In summary, it doesn't seem to make any difference - therefore, unless I hear different from you all, I'm just going to leave it as-is, with the driver/inf file that I d/l'd from driverguide still installed.

Thanks all.

Just go by the old maxim...if it ain't broke...don't fix it.

My cdrom drive is not reading disk. It was working untill a week ago. It opens and closes ok. there is also no icon for the drive in my computer either. Does anyone know how I can fix this

Do you remember changing anything after the last time that it worked? Software-wise or hardware-wise? Think back carefully. If so, please describe whatever you can about the change.

I'm not a guru, but the first thing that pops to mind is: Has anyone been into "Setup" and POSSIBLY changed any bios settings? I'd have a quick look, just to be sure that the drive in question is enabled there.

The real gurus that are good at TALKING you through this sort of thing will be along shortly. In the meantime, you might want to post again, with some details about your computer and drive. They are going to ask. They need to know.
WinXP or ...?
drive manufacturer, make, model ... ?
that's just a start. Anything else that you think might be important, please list it.

I tried to reinstall it but i got this message
Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)
It stop working the day after I installed my printer on it.
my system info is:
Microsoft windows Xp
media center edition
version 2002
service pack 2

gateway
amthlon(tm) 64 x2 dual
core processor 4600+
2.41 ghz . 2.00 gb of ramNice machine twistedreaper.
Good post WillyW - more info was definitely needed
@ twisted - try uninstalling the driver for the CD drive and Windows should reinstall the driver on the next reboot - see if it works then. Also, is the drive detected in the BIOS?
And did the problem start a little while after you installed the printer driver, or straight after it?I tried unistalling and reinstalling but it didn't work. I'm not really sure how long after i installed my printer my cdrom drive stoped working. I just noticed it the next day but it might have stoped working right away. Also how would I check to see if the Bios detected the cdrom drive.

When you BOOT your computer up, right at the start there is a black screen with some white writing.
Does it mention anything about a CD drive?
Press a key to get into the BIOS, too (it's usually either Delete, F2, or F1, but varies between manufacturers) and see if it's mentioned in there.
Go to the boot order screen (it may have a slightly different name) and see if it is in there.
Did you change anything else besides installing the printer driver?I'm not sure but I think it is recongnized in the bios but to make sure, when you go in to BIOS where do you go to check if it is recongnized. The optics usually go before the mechanics fail. That is the drive may open and close but it does not function, as you describe.

As DRIVES are so inexpensive, a replacement may be the next logical step if the above suggestions do not work. That looks like a fairly new system. Is it not still under warranty? If it is call Gateway at once.Quote
Is it not still under warranty? If it is call Gateway at once.
I meant to say that, how did it slip my mind?
In the BIOS, go into the boot order screen (or similar), it should be LISTED in there.

576M of ram installed on it.
AMD K6-2 350MHz

Windows 98 can have problems with RAM over 512 meg. Has this amount of memory always been in there?

No. Not always.
The computer is around 7 years old. It started with 64M, ran that way for a while... forgot now how long that was - maybe a year or more - then increased it to 320M - ran with that for years. Then about 3 months ago, that additional 256M memory module died. Got a deal that I couldn't pass up, so instead of getting just ONE 256M stick of memory, I got two. Installed them both, just to see how things behaved. Everything is fine - I have seen nothing to indicate any memory problems.

Quote
Since you just reinstalled it and then had problems, I would hazzard a guess that the answer is no.

You lost me here. Or you have misunderstood something.

How does just recently reinstalling Win98 related to the amount of ram in the machine? Please clarify.

"then had problems" .... no, that's not right. I'm not sure what you are referring to.
If it is the problem with web browsing/too many tabs open - then maybe you missed where I said, "It did the same thing before the re-install too, fwiw. "

Quote
Try removing enough to get it down to 512 and see if that MAKES a difference.

A difference in what? Please specify.
Unfortunately, ... and it is my fault for participating.... this thread has become a BIT branched out.
Thanks for your patience.

Quote
There is really no advantage to more with a Win98 system anyway.

You know - now that you've mentioned it - that sounds familiar. That the max for Win98 is 512M. I wasn't thinking about it.... I was thinking that the board maxes out at 768M, so what the heck.... leave it all in there.

If you have time please also comment on my original question too. Thanks

The gist of it was to reduce the RAM to 512 and reinstall the video card drivers and see if that solves the problem.

Frequently what happens is that Windows was loaded with a lower amount of RAM and when you exceed that amount things keep on working. When you reinstall Win98 with RAM > 512, then you run into the vCache problems promptly if your machine is susceptible to it. You said that the problems really got worse AFTER the reinstall which supports that theory.

Was that all of the questions to answer?Quote

vCache?
What's that... this is news to me.... can you elaborate?

Quote
You said that the problems really got worse AFTER the reinstall which supports that theory.

Ok... here's where you are MIXED up.
I didn't say that.

To be clear: I see no difference in the machine's behavior in this regard from before the reinstall to now. Further, no difference in any problem behavior from when it had 320M of ram to when it was increased to 576M, both before and after the reinstall.

Thanks for the tip though. Next time I have reason to disconnect everything again and open the case, I'll remove that 64M memory module and store it.
Btw, since there are three memory slots, when I remove that one, would it be wise to move the remaining two around, so as to fill slots one and two? I think that the 64M module is in slot one now.

Quote
Was that all of the questions to answer?

Actually, my first question in my first post is the one I wanted to get back to... we kind of got off that track.
I'd asked if there was even any need of using the newer driver that I'd found, versus the original driver that came with the card.
See first post in this thread.

Thanks

http://www.frugalsworld.com/tweaking/vcache.shtml

OK, my misunderstanding on point two.

I think there is no specific advantage to using an "updated" driver which may not be correct versus the driver that came with the card. It really all depends on what the update was supposed to fix. I personally would stick with the stock ATI driver on CD.Quote

Very clear.
Thanks for your opinion on this.

The part we went into about ram in excess of 512 would have been better in another thread. It is quite interesting, but was muddling the conversation.
Someday, after I've had a chance to remove that 64M module (I'll ask again then about moving the remaining modules around), - when it is down to 512M as you recommended - then I'll try opening a bunch of tabs on those websites, see if it still hangs, and get back to you then.
Thanks again.

Yep.
I probably already found that page. Found quite a few when I looked around, and most of them had essentially the same wording.
I wouldn't have been looking if not for GX1_Man's heads-up.

I bookmarked:
http://www.dewassoc.com/support/win98/win9x_512memory.htm
and it looks to be giving the same advice as the page you mentioned.
Thanks for passing it along too.

On that page I found is a link to a Microsoft help page:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q181966/

This is an excerpt from there:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
3. Click Advanced.

....

Limit Memory to MB:

This setting limits memory usage on your computer to the first MB, where is a number of megabytes. This setting adds the "MaxPhysPage=" line to the System.ini file, where is a hexidecimal value of the amount of memory to be used. If this setting is too low (16 MB or lower), it may prevent Windows 98 from starting normally.

For now - just for the heck of it - I went ahead and did that.
Now System Properties reports that the machine has 512M of ram.
(Everest reports 511)

Basically, I don't feel like doing the work right now - under the desk, disconnecting, etc. . It is not that big of a deal, but I just did it a few times while adding another drive. So for now, I tried limiting it to 512 within Win98 - and haven't seen a bit of difference yet.

I do agree with GX1_Man's method though. It is the most idiot-proof. If it ain't in there, then it can't screw up anything. Especially if having the extra 64M in there is never doing anything beneficial. It is just a matter of getting around to it.

Well, I agree with that also. 512MB is a lot of RAM for Win 98/98SE. I have a dual-boot configuration with Win 98SE and Win XP; I have 512MB of RAM. I can't image that you'll notice any decrease in performance by removing the 64MB module.

It started off when i put in a sound CARD. On start up i got this error http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...g/IMG_0018.jpg, every single option i selected, my COMPUTER would just shutdown. So i TOOK out the sound card and i got the same error but this TIME i selected "last known good configuration" and it worked. Then i tried to play cs:s and got a window saying my drivers are out of date. So i go to the ATI site and download the new drivers and restart my computer and i got the same stupid error on start up. I ask around on how to FIX that error and people said to just reformat. I reformat and install all the new drivers. I start up CS:S and i got the same window saying that my drivers are out of date. I ignore the message and join a server, but its unplayable. I had 1-20fps on high and low settings. I tried a different game (BF2) and i got the same results as CS:S.

Does any know whats wrong? Ive install different drivers like warcat 7.4, it did add a little fps but still didnt work.

Solve : Problems with my Lan driver?

Answer»

Ok i just received my new custom built pc and am having great problems getting online as I cannot get my software to work diretly.

When I insert my driver cd and click on auto run it comes up with an error box saying unable to fix security error, this comes up around 10 times and when i finally get to the menu for drivers nothing is listed under it. I tried INSTALLING manually by exploring the cd and this seemed to work ok until I went to device MANAGER and it said the driver had successfully installed but the software was having an error when trying to run. The error code was 10. I also looked on the net for updated drivers and they have not solved the problem. I called the guy who sold me the pc and he said he will send me a new cd but I have doubts as to wether this will work.

My mobo is an abit sg-95 socket 775
I am running windows VISTA 32-bit
The LAN is an SiS 190 (ethernet device driver)

If you need any other info please ask and to street1 I will take up your ADVICE and hopefully be a lot more knowlodgeable in the years to come.

Solve : D Drive will not recognize any disk in it?

Answer» OK so about a month ago I deleted a lot of files that I thought would be no NEED to me. In the process I think I deleted my cd-rom DRIVER (I know I had deleted my sound driver and had to reinstall that via DELL site).

So now everytime I insert a cd, go to my computer, and click on cd drive (d:) it says please insert a disk into drive d:. It does this for any cd so I know it must be a problem with my cp.

My cd-rom drive is a dell HL-DT-ST CD-ROM GCR 8483B model. My disk drive (I don't know if this is relavant) is a Maxtor 6Y080L0.

My SYSTEM service tag is 2229D61. It is a Dell Dimension 3000 running on windows XP.

Thanks please reply soon I really appreciate it.Have you tried the driver reset tool?--->Here

Solve : Drives Help... Please help?

Answer»

On my COMPUTER, I have three drives: C:/ (14 GB) D:/ (18 GB) and F:/ (5 GB). The problem is that the computer downloads everything on to the F drive and windows is INSTALLED on that drive. Because it only has 5 GB, there is no space on it to do anything and everytime I try to download an update or anything, it says there is no space left. How can I fix this problem so I can use my other drive like C:/ or POSSIBLE make F:/ bigger or something.. PLEASE help Are we talking about one hard drive with three partitions or three separate hard drives?

What operating system are you using?

What's the make and model of your computer?

If it were me...I'd back up everything I wanted to save from this computer and do a recovery...only if there is only one drive and I mistakingly partitoned it into three separate drives. I'd also make sure that none of the existing partitions have a hidden image file used for recovery purposes.

Once I had everything backed up...I recover the system to the way I WANT it.

This may not be what you want to do, though...think about it.
What is on C: and is there a reason Windows is not installed there ? ?
Is this a dual boot setup ? ?

As far as DLoads you can have them land anywhere you choose. Depending on the browser you are using the directions to set this up are different...

What browser ? ?

Solve : i82801aa AC97 Win98SE sound driver??

Answer»

Device is BIOS enabled. Hardware Props. auto-download from MS avails nowt.
Have scoured the web inc. Intel & can't find it anywhere!
Can't AFFORD XP which I know does include this driver.
Does anyone know if the dreaded ME has it built in?
It's for a Compaq Deskpro
PIII 800Mhz(Coppermine)
i815 Solano chipset
It's a Win98 logoed system and it's an onboard device so I'm sure this driver must EXIST somewhere!
Could some kind soul please try and help? I can supply AIDA32 info. further to the above if this helps.

NB A long while ago I found a driver listed as being for this device written by Realtek but it can't have been right because the install BSOD-ed and crashed my system irretreivably.#6 here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=179&OSFullName=Windows*+Me&lang=eng&strOSs=22&submit=Go!Thanks - the graphics driver is the one and the App. Accelerator does help general performance but - despite fresh attempts with the software on this page installed...still no sound device!I said #6: INF Update Utility - Zip Format (1927KB) - chipset driveryep installed that as well - zip first then the .exe
sorry should have made that clearIn that case, I'd assume, your on-board sound chip is dead.
You may need to buy cheap sound card (~$15).XP finds it and works it fine...but £65 for a new OS? Linux presents a whole raft of other even worse problems or I'd be using that INSTEAD of 98SE cos Big L. finds and uses the sound no probs.Right - obviously this is a non-starter...I'll have to install Tux and fight the inevitable battles over modem detection and driver INSTALLATION and GOD knows what.
Thanks anyway.

Solve : I think I busted my CD Drive!!!?

Answer»

A few days ago I was switching computers around with my cousin.....he had bought a new computer and was giving his old one to me which is Windows XP Packard Bell.
Well we were transferring files and we deleted all of his files he had on there in My documents, videos, pics, music and took a few programmes off as well......well I wanted to install something but when I PUT my cd in the drive...the mouse icon started that sand clock but then immdeiately stopped as if I had ejected the cd which i hadn't.
We have tried several things to get it going again.
System reboot, system restore, that destructive reboot as well as non-destructive but all has failed!!!!!
We looked into Drivers and saw some important files missing...gone as in they're no where.
Do we buy a new driver and install it?
We're going crazy here!!
HELP! Did you try a different cd? Is it there in my computer? Go to device manager and dvd/cd-rom drives. Are there any yellow question marks? We tried several thinking the CDs were broken!
When we go to My Computer it doesn't pick it up....whe I click on the CD drive icnon...it says 'Please INSERT a disk into ;E''
No Yellow questions marks.......but some of the files for the drive....you can't click into them........the icon is still there but it is faded which indicates it does not have it there.....does that make SENSE?Did you try a working disk that is know to work. Some times it dont like how the disk were formatted, I ran into this issue before. Drivers are free but if the case is the drive died then there is no REAL saving it. You could try booting off the xp disk an doing a repair or a complete reinstall I had that happen before as well.Check the cables to your CD player...the flat RIBBON cable and the power cable....make sure they are secure at both ends.

Solve : Installing XP, Can't Find RAID Driver?

Answer»

I had bought my laptop in February 2008, it CAME with Vista. It took me awhile to get rid of it and install XP again. I had found a program to make a copy of the OS CD but to include the appropriate drivers and stuff to install XP. Before I found nLite, I got an error screen saying that the setup couldn't find any hard drive disks (becuase of RAID).

I bought a new 500GB HDD at FUTURE Shop last night and since I came HOME, i have been trying to install XP on the new HDD. I downloaded nLite again and collected some drivers from the drivers and system32\drivers folders but it dosen't work. I still get that screen.
I can't use the CD that I used before (to install XP the first time) becuase the CD is cracked so a lot of files won't copy over. I've tried.

Do I need to include the inf file for the RAID driver, if so where is it located in XP Home? Or do I need to download it and include it when making an ISO file with nLite? Also, how do I tell which RAID driver/controller I use on my laptop. I went to My Computer>Properties>Hardware Manager and looked but it doesn't really say RAID. It says:

IDE ATA/ATAPI controller:
Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller
Intel(R) ICH8M Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 2850
Primary IDE Channel
Secondary IDE Channel

I've tried to disable the RAID in the BIOS but there is no option for it. My BIOS is phoenix TrustedCore(tm)

The 200GB HDD that is in my laptop is SATA, oh course.

Is there anyway to disable the BIOS so i can install Windows XP normally?!

It is now 1:24 AM and I am extremely tired. The RAID/SATA driver needs to be loaded during the XP install...
Very early on in the setup you will see "Press F6 to install RAID/SATA drivers...
They are on the Driver CD that shipped with the laptop...or at the laptop manuf. site...I've found the RAID driver and it worked, I'm installing Windows XP on my new 500GB HDD but theres a problem installing, it'll looking for ASMS it it can't seem to find it on the CD. I put in my old CD, the original OS CD too but it can't seem to find it.You are going to have to borrow a legit XP CD to do this properly...
Some nLite CD's just aren't built properly.
It needs to match the version of your liscense key to work properly.

P.S. Remember to install the Service Packs as well and run Windows UPDATE...I did this from a legit XP OS CD.You STATED it was a copy of an XP CD...It is now fixed.

Solve : Installing Graphics card help?

Answer»

Ok so i got a new graphics card, its an ati Radeon 256m card. When i OPENED my computer i didn't see any current graphics cards in... I put in the new one but when i tried to start the screen is just black... when i take out the new card its normal. I'm not familiar with computers, any help?First, you have onboard graphics. If you can see things on your monitor as normally expected, then you have a graphics card in your system. Onboard graphics (also can be called integrated graphics) just means it's one that's built into the monitor and shares memory with the main memory that the computer uses (the memory sticks) which probably why you didn't see any current graphics card in as you mentioned but a graphics card is definitely in your system and for your purposes, you can't remove the onboard graphics but you can disable it so computer knows not to use it anymore.

If you're INSERTING in a separate graphics card, it doesn't share memory with the computer's main memory sticks thus is better.

I'm thinking one of two things may have happened.

1. Have you unplugged the cable from old graphics card to the new one? (That might be a reason wh your screen is black ... old card has been disabled, new one has been detected by windows but monitor isn't CONNECTED to it)

2. Old graphics card was not disabled as should have been.... in this case, try following instructions to see if you get it working ....
Quote

To disable the onboard graphics (assuming that you are running Windows)., turn your computer on and log on using Safe Mode. You can do this by pressing F8 repeatedly during boot up. You should come to a list of options; highlight Safe Mode using the up and down buttons, and press 'Enter' to select.

Right click on My Computer and select Properties.

Select the Advanced tab, and click on Device Manager.

Click on the '+' by the picture of a monitor. It should pull up your graphics device (something like Intel Integrated Graphics or whatever the name of your current graphics card is).

Right click on the device for your onboard graphics.Disable it, don't uninstall it; otherwise, this will cause you a world of trouble.

Log off, and power your computer off.

Remove the case cover and insert the new card in an empty slot.

Plug your monitor cable into the new card, and when you log on, it should run on low resolution until the driver is installed. It should find the new hardware, and from here, follow the graphics card installation MANUAL. Sometimes it has programs that install the driver and not the Found New Hardware Wizard.

Sorry if this post seems bit long but hopefully it helps. Good Luck and let us know how things go ok so i disabled it my old card, turned off the computer, plugged in the new card, plugged in my monitor into the card. turned on the computer and..... its still black... did i do something wrong? i can hear the fan in the graphics cards fan running.... did i do something wrong?Sorry for double post but i was searching the internet and found something similar to my problem

no clue what this means but do u think it could be my problem?

here's the reply to it

Solve : External HDD?

Hi.

Yesterday I bough a HDD with a case to go with it which has a power plug and a usb from the case to the computer (case has a thing that connects to HDD) Once I plug it in, it can detect that there it is there and will install the drivers for it BUT I cant FIND the place to get to it... Normly I would go thru My Computer -> find it there.. When I do that also there is a E) Drive but thats been there before I pluged this in. Ive tryed it on two diffrent USB ports and both times I cant access into th HDD. Also in Device Manager there is one -USB Mass Storage, and there is no yellow "!" at all.

What am I doing WRONG?

ThanksDid you format it?its all brand new, dont have a option toGo Start, and in "Start search" TYPE in:
diskmgmt.msc
Hold CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter.

In Disk Management, right click on new drive, click "Format".Thanks, worked good! Also there is a brrrrrr noise coming from my stero when the external HDD is pluged in... any reason for that to ACURE?I have no IDEA. It sounds like some interference. Try different USB port.Did you plug the external hard disk into the same power source as the speakers and or PC?

Solve : Audio driver has been deleted and cant reinstall?

Answer»

I have somehow stupidly deleted my audio DRIVER and I can not reinstall it.

I have an Acer Aspire One AOA150 with windows xp home edition
And my driver is RealTek High Definition Audio driver 5.10.0.5628

When I went to device manager there was a Yellow EXCLAMATION mark on Audio device on HD audio bus. Device STATUS said "the driver for this status is not installed (code 28)'
I clicked reinstall but said I needed a CD. This laptop does not take Cd's, its a tiny little 10" thing.
I also tried to rollback Drive, but no driver was ever backed up.
This computer was given to me so I do not have any info that may have come with it.

I went to the Acer site and tried to download the driver from there but it would not run.
I finally found a site to download it from and and once I was installing it a message came up
'Install RealTek HD Audio Driver Failure!! [ERROR code: -0001]'

It TELLS me that no sound card is found.
Oh, but when I go to my programs I still have this: RealTek GbE &FE Ethernet PCI-E NIC Driver.

Could this be why it wont install the driver again?
If you know some way to get my audio back, please help.
RealTek GbE &FE Ethernet PCI-E NIC is your ethernet card driver, and it has nothing to do with sound.

Go here: http://us.acer.com/acer-v2/service.do?LanguageISOCtxParam=en&miu10einu24.current.attN2B2F2EEF=3750&sp=page15e&ctx2.c2att1=25&miu10ekcond13.attN2B2F2EEF=3750&CountryISOCtxParam=US&ctx1g.c2att92=453&ctx1.att21k=1&CRC=2054404012
Download, and install chipset driver first, then audio driver.thanks but
Thats where I went to install it....
and didnt work...

What do you mean it has nothing to do with sound? Quote

install chipset driver first

THANKS! that worked.
Everything is back to normal.Cool

Solve : Can't install LGw2252 driver?

Answer» HI,

I am running Vista and recently bought a laptop and an LG W2252 for photo editing. I am only running ONE monitor at a time, not dual simultenously.

The CD that came with the monitor doesn't appear to want to install the driver.

I went on line and downloaded a driver from LG, but again it won't intall.

Instead of saying it has installed LG W2252, it keeps saying it has successfully downloaded "GENERIC PnP Monitor".

I keep running through the process to try and nominate W2252 but it keeps defaulting to "Generic PnP Monitor".

This is a major problem (as far as I can see!) as I edit photos on this laptop and need the screen colour calibrated so I know what I am seeing is pretty much what will print out.

I have a DataColour Spyder 3 and I have to keep recalibrating it every time I restart the computer - ie the saved profile won't LOAD and I keep getting the following message:

"DisplayInfoRB-getscreenindex-didn't find monitor, 0,0,1024,768"

I assume this is because DataColour can't find the screen profile?

If anyone can solve this they can have my two children....okay, maybe only the first born one.

Many thanks
Go into hardware manager and select properties for display and then change driver, then POINT the display driver to the CD for the correct driver. Sounds like Windows is trying to take priority over the OEM driver.thanks mate... I will give that a try. Quote
If anyone can solve this they can have my two children....okay, maybe only the first born one.
I'm pretty sure that you can keep your children

Solve : Audio driver needed for Intel945G Series; Gateway 5408 PC?

Answer»

It doesn't matter what program I use, it does the same thing. The music or audio file starts playing and 15-30 seconds into it, it sticks at the current sound and then 5 seconds later into the file, it does it again and again. It's getting really annoying. At first, it didn't bother me so I just dealt with it but now, I want it fixed. I tried the help through Windows Media and it told me it was an audio DRIVER problem. Right now, I don't have an output device installed. I'm needing something that works correctly.
Some information about my computer... Gateway Desktop PC, GT5408 series. Gateway Council Bluffs Intel 945G Viiv motherboard, Integrated high definition audio. If you need more, let me know and I will ATTEMPT to get it. I appreciate any advice.
FYI, I had to reinstall Windows about a month ago.

Your sound depends on 945G chipset, so you may try to reinstall chipset driver: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Filter_Results.aspx?strOSs=All&strTypes=All&ProductID=2115&lang=eng&OSFullName=All%20Operating%20Systems (number 5)I tried to reinstall it and an Error message came up when I tried to install it, "This computer does not meet the minimum system requirements for installing the software." We're talking Vista here, correct?Yes, Vista was installed when I bought it. When I (not sure if this is the correct word but...) reformatted my computer, I noticed it was originally XP and I just ran the CD my computer came with, which was Vista. I'm going to try and find the driver that was originally on here. I found out that gateway keeps these things hidden on their computers for people like me who tend to delete IMPORTANT stuff! Quote

I just ran the CD my computer came with
What is the exact name of that CD?I just pulled everything out and there was 2 of them. One was from Gateway and that disc says, Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium32-Bit and then there was a Windows Anytime Upgrade CD.When you said "reformatted my computer", what exactly did you do, and which disk was used?I used the Gateway CD, it pretty much wiped everything out that was originally on the computer. Download, and install Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
Open it.
In left pane expand Computer folder.
Click once on Summary
In upper menu, go Report>Quick Report-Summary
Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Don't include anything under the line Debug - PCI

Before I checked your post this morning, I tried one other thing. I went to my device manger - sound- and uninstalled the audio driver software that i currently had. I also went to my CONTROL panel and uninstalled the program. I also located what folders I knew of that I had downloaded from Gatweways website that had audio driver updates. I tried all of the audio drivers from their website for my computers model/serial number and I kept getting the same results. I also tried the recovery center and downloaded the original drivers (which I wrote down if you need them) and I keep getting the same result.

Is the device still in Device Manager?
If it is, reboot into Safe Mode, go to Device Manager again, right click the device, and choose Uninstall. Then reboot into normal mode - the device should reinstall automatically.I figured I would have to get a new one but, they're not that expensive. What should I look for when buying a new sound card? I would go with a name brand vs generic unknown quality and performance. Creative makes some good ones.

Solve : Digital Camera Lost Software/ Driver Install?

Answer»

Ok... I am trying to use a Concord Eye-Q 2000 digital camera on my computer. I don't have the driver or software for this camera on my PC. There are pictures on the camera I want to download to my computer.
So I googled to find the driver and found this site:
http://members.driverguide.com/index.php?action=dosearch&qm0=+concord+eyeq+2000&qa5=2&qa7=Windows+XP&sm=s&si=ed1146a635c3fe1d4df7c871dc12f244&st=1243355616&pg=1

I don't guess I really know what I'm doing.
The computer prompted me that this driver was not proven to be compatible with Windows XP and gave me an option to cancel download. I opted to cancel, but it continued the download anyway!!? So, I did a driver scan from this site:
http://www.driverguide.com/
© iCentric Corp. 2003 - 2008

It said UNKNOWN in REGARDS to this driver that was installed.

So, I'm like "Okay, I need to get this mess off my computer"....
But I don't know how.

Can someone advise me on how to get this off of my computer, or tell me that it's ok to use it. I haven't tried to use it with the camera, because I got scared that it was gonna mess it up.
Also, can anyone tell me how I can find the proper place to download something to help me get the pictures off of my camera onto my computer??? Thank You!!!!Don't ever use Driver Guide sites like that one. Many of them tell you that your computer is missing drivers, when it MAY not be.

Do you remember what the driver was called? No, I don't. It is a camera. A Concord EyeQ Duo 2000.
It seems to be a camera that is no longer being made and maybe even the company has changed it's name. But I have pictures on it that I am really hoping to be able to download.
And the driver is for Windows XP?

Try hereOK...I have a stupid question: Hopefully you are KINDA use to that!

Do I need to have the camera attached to the computer when I do this?
I've never had this driver on my PC before EITHER...does that matter?Okay, let's start again.

Did a CD come with this, or did the software install from the camera? It came with a CD. But I don't have it anymore. I found the CD! Can you help me now, please? Oh, forgot completely about this.....Sorry about that.

Usually all you have to do is INSERT the CD and it should run and install the software. If the software was installed before, then you'll want to do a repair install. It worked! THANKS! Great. Have fun with it!

Solve : nVidia Driver Update Hang?

Answer»

Lately, some of my games have been crashing so I tried to up date my graphics card.
I'm currently using:

Gateway
GM5088
WINDOWS Xp, Media Center Edition, Ver. 2002, SP3
Geforce 6100 (Its crap, I know)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual, 4600+, 2.41 Ghz
1.87 GB of Ram

I go To the nVidia website and download the latest driver.
Link: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_186.18_whql.html

It unpacks fine but when it GET to the "InstallSheld wizard is...Blah Blah Blah" Stage, it hangs just about 2 bars away from completing, and FREEZE's my computer up if I try to do anything, so I have to reboot.

Ive tried to leave it on overnight to see if it was just being slow, but it stayed like that all night.

Id run it in safe mode and try but its a gateway and the boot menu doesn't have such OPTIONS. If it does, I cant find it.

My best guess is that it USES all of my processing power and locks it up, but I don't know how Id fix something like that.

Edit: I tried to install the latest nVidia Control center but the same thing happens. If some one could at least give me an Idea what to do that would be great...Scrappy,

Safe mode is a feature of Windows, not of computer hardware manufacturers (like Dell, Gateway, etc.) so it doesn't matter that you have a gateway.

As soon as the gateway logo disappears press "F8" on your keyboard (when booting the computer). Feel free to press it a number of times, as it won't harm anything.

As long as you press it before the windows logo pops up, it should give you the option of "Safe mode," where you can then try loading the new driver.

good luck.

Solve : Having game frezzes in every game i play. Please help?

Answer»

Hello, ive got a problem with my drivers, ive run the driverzone scan and installed my CHIPSET drivers but when i reboot and run the scan agian there still not there.
I have CPU usage drops when i play any games, causing GAME frezzes and i suspect that this might be the problem.

I got a custom built laptop, DIDNT built it myself but bought it assemblet.

Windows 7 Professional 64bit.
Processer: Intel(R) core(TM) i7.2720AM CPU @ 2,20GHz.
Gfx card: Nvidia Geforce GT 540M

(dont know much about this, and sorry for my bad english)It's okay, your English isn't bad at all considering it's your 2nd language

In task manager, are there any CPU-intensive programs besides your game that use your CPU's resources?
When the freezes occur is your HDD light flashing/solid?
Also, try disabling Intel Speedstep-your processor may be throttling due to low CPU usage. There are no recourses intensive programs running while the lag happens

When i was trying to moniter it it seemed that it was only the game that drops in cpu and not the other aplications.

Erm im not sure if the HDD light is on... dont know where to look :p
and i cant acces speed-step in my bios..QUOTE from: Guldlossen on April 01, 2012, 03:10:38 PM

and i cant acces speed-step in my bios..
SpeedStep is also called "EIST", if there is no EIST then see if there are any options to toggle C-States (C1, C1e, C3, C4, and C6, for example) if there are, disable all of them.

If your BIOS doesn't have that either then we have to configure it in Windows.

Under Control Panel – open Power Options

Set both the Minimum Processor State and Maximum Processor State to 100%.

The hard drive indicator light... it should be the one on your computer that flashes every once in a while when you are on your computer just doing light tasks...

I have CPU usage drops when i play any games, causing game frezzes and i suspect that this might be the problem.

In addition to Power Settings throttling down, it could be caused by heat issues. I'd check your temperatures.I recently bought a laptop cooler because i thought that might have been the problem but, even tho its the temps are much better now it still lags (also cleaned the fan and such)
Theres like almost no options in the BIOS... i tried to turn off visualization, but that didnt work either and i could acually not see the differance at all... but thats prolly because i dont know what it is :p

Tried the power options settings but no luck..

The HDD light is defferantly frezzed in flashing when it lags!

MoBo: Compal PBL21 (learned the word in the chat! ) i recently updated the driver from 1,6 to 2,7 i think or something like that.

Thanks for the help so far

The HDD light is defferantly frezzed in flashing when it lags!

Do you mean that the HDD light just stays on and doesn't flash when the lags happen? Maybe its just the game trying to load a map for a portion of your game level...

How frequent are the CPU drops? Every minute? Every 5 minutes?I'd find out what manuf. that HDD is and DLoad and run the Free diagnostics on it...

BTW how much Free Space is on it ? ?Its more like every 10 secounds or something... it makes gaming impossible.

Theres 300 gb free space.

Next up findin the munf and trying that out Quote from: Guldlossen on April 03, 2012, 01:47:37 PM
Its more like every 10 secounds or something... it makes gaming impossible.
...Then its probably not the hard drive...there's a reason that games have a "Loading..." screen on them...
We'll test the hard drive later after we have factored out the more common problems that you may have.

I have 3 ideas at this point:
1) Test the RAM out with http://www.memtest86.com Download and burn to a CD and run for 10 passes.

2) How many antivirus programs do you have running at the same time? If only 1, try to temporarily stop the real-time protection and then see if your lags persist...

3) Update to the latest graphics drivers here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/indexsg.aspx?lang=en-us (version 296.10), and after you are done whenever you launch a game you should:

Run with the high-performance nVidia processor.I got he latest gfx driver but i dont see that option like on the picture 0o

Tried to turn avg off but it still lags, havnt gotten around to tring out the test cdYeah run the Memtest86+ and report back.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Zh4HCadTY_A
How to use the Optimus feature and run with the nVidia graphics on your laptop. Optimus should be a part of the graphics drivers and should install automatically...

In the comments, there is a person who is experiencing lags due to the computer not being able to switch properly.
Quote
Yes, thanks for the response, I solved this with nvidia driver update. First I tried to update it using nvidia controll panel and it said that update is complete so I thought my driver is up to date. But this piece of crap deceived me! I opened control panel → installing/removing apps and noticed that nvidia driver is still outdated.
So, everybody who having the same troubles, you need to GO on nvidia site and download the driver manually.
One user's comment that may help.I looked though the video but i have no such options...

downloaded the newst driver agian but i still dont have the options like in the video

(Forgot in the post that it doest matter what graphics the game is on it still lags... even on the lowest gfx settings)

Solve : putting xp pro on emachines T2542?

Answer»

Hello,

I have another tough driver-related problem. Your help is always most appreciated.
how do I go about installing these drivers, starting with the CHIPSET drivers?

I just installed xp professional on a HARD drive and updated all the microsoft updates that I could in hopes to install the drivers as well, but there are three yellow question mark/exclamation points in device manager. SMBus, Audio Device on high definition Audio Bus, and Video Controller.
I grabbed the drivers from the emachines site on a flash drive. the OS that I have compresses them.
I started with the SMBus driver. (this is the chipset driver, am I correct?) I have not tried to do anything with any other driver.
I extracted it right in the folder. I also double-clicked the setup file with the HOPE that this could be easy (I was hoping that the driver would just install without a problem). a couple of screens did come up, but activity seased, and the drivers did not install to completion.

I installed everest home, but immediately after launching it, I GOT a pop-up 'error' that stated everest home did not support the chipset which my computer has, northbridge ATI RS400/southbridge ATI SB450 (everest provided this info after stating my computer was not supported??)
Also, according to everest, my motherboard is RC410-SB450-PTRC-GC-00. however, if everest is not working correctly, can everest be trusted?

I will attempt to attach the readme text file that is included with the driver. it explains several different ways of installing this chipset driver.

the computer is an emachines T2542 with 320mb ram and pentium 4. I may however increase the memory if I have some that is compatible. I am looking into it today.

GPU chipset according to everest is ATI Radion Xpress 200 (RC410) Chipset
The most info I could acquire about audio was ATI SB450 high definition audio controller. that was all that everest had to offer.

if the readme file doesn't attach properly I will have to copy and paste that seperately.

Sorry if my post is LACKING or disorganized in any way, and thanks as you have helped me many times in the past. ejames82

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]I was able to find the drivers. the others were incorrect. the correct drivers were here:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Desktop+Boards&ProductLine=Third-Party+Chipset+Boards&ProductProduct=Intel%c2%ae+Desktop+Board+D101GGC

all that was required was double-clicking on them. once I discovered the name of the motherboard was D101GGC things fell into place.
Glad we could help.

So, you're all fixed up then?Nope! Just BSOD'd. Same error and everything. Should I replace them with the ones you linked?Let's try this

Download Speccy

After you've downloaded it double click on the file to start the installation. Once you've installed it, open it up. At the top of the page go to File and then Publish snapshot. You will see a prompt asking you if you want to proceed with publish. Click yes, then copy to clipboard. If it is a remote temperature and environment monitor, it is not a standard feature of your Toshiba. It is not a simple USB device. The device and has its own instantiation SOFTWARE. Do the install again, using the CD that came with that USB external CONTROLLER.

Solve : BIOS question for ep-61BXA-M motherboard.?

Answer»

I want to get an older computer that has been home built with the ep-61BXA-M motherboard to recognize a larger HDD I want to install. It's a Western Digital WD800JB, 80GBs HDD. This will be the only HDD in the computer, and I am not sure how the jumper should be set. According to the diagram there should be no jumper if I use it as master. It came set with jumper in CABLE SELECT SETTINGS. I do have a CD ROM that is jumpered for slave on the the same Primary IDE and a DVD drive on the Secondary IDE jumpered to master. For some REASON I cannot get my computer to see this HDD.

What am I doing wrong?

ThanksMB=================================Slave========Master.
Not sure that I follow your meaning.

Thats the cabling diagram...
If the HDD is the only device on that cable hook it to the end connector...and yes most HDD's if master need no jumper.
You may want to consider the chance that the HDD has failed...

Let us know.I'm not exactly sure if the HDD is good or bad. That is what I'm trying to figure out. The HDD is connected to the primary IDE 1 and is the only HDD in the computer. If I keep the jumper at the factory setting which is cable select setting or take the jumper out to make the HDD master I still get...Detecting Primary etc,etc ...[Press F4 to skip].

The bootup screen doesn't go any further. I downloaded the Diagnostic Utility from Western Digital but I can't diagnose if the computer won't recognize the HDD.

I remember doing this with an old Dell laptop. I faintly recall something about updating BIOS, something about LBA, and maybe something about the chipset, but it was a few years back and my memory is not so hot these days.

Not sure what I should do next. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hello C_C.

I read the info from the link you provided. Very interesting. I downloaded a .PDF file on the ep-61BXA-M EPoX motherboard for further reading.

As I look at the IDE 1 and IDE 2 connections on the board I notice that there are no pins MISSING. I only have the big wire 40 pin ribbon with the black connectors at each end, with the keyways that a Western Digital MDL# AC313000-00RT HDD is connected to, which was how it was set up when it was given to me. This is the only HDD on the PRIMARY IDE or the IDE1 as it is noted on the motherboard and the manual I downloaded.

I am working on getting my floppy connect right now, but I will be back to ask more questions if you don't MIND. If I get the info right from a human I seem to understand and retain the info more than reading from the link you sent me for instance.

Thanks,
Gary

C_C After doing some reading from the link you provided and info from other sites you are correct that I need an 80 wire 40 pin connector. I also need to leave everything set to auto in TYPE and MODE columns in the CMOS setup. I don't think I'll have any issues when I change the ribbon. The only thing I keep thinking about is updating the North and South Bridge. Is this something I need to do? I did a BIOS update already.

Solve : Newbie question about my hard drive?

Answer»

Hey all. My laptop just died, well actually the screen died I think. I have toshiba satellite L 500 D. What I was wondering is there anyway I can salvage my hard drive? Or can I install it on another laptop? You can remove the HDD...place it in an external enclosure ...and have full access to it on any other PC.

NOTE: Placing it into another laptop it'll probably fail to boot if it's Win XP or newer...this is by design....however it does not need to be able to boot to access the data.so can I use the hard drive again? or will I just be able to get the data from it and that's it? I'm not that great with computers so forgive me if I'm asking stupid questions First, they are not stupid questions. Second, as long as the drive itself is not damaged or the cause of your problem then yes, you may certainly continue to use it. Last, perhaps you'd like to explain exactly what happened with your laptop - if it's not a dead screen, it may be something with which we can help. How did it died? Ok Allan. Here's what happened, I was using the laptop like an hour before this happened, I cloed the laptop, then I went to turn it on again I could hear the computer starting up but the screen wouldn't COME on at all.Does this sound like something I could fix? Or is it easier to just GO buy a new one? Oh BTW the warranty was up 5 months ago. If you need more info just let me know. Thank You so much Allan your AwesomeSo you see NOTHING on the screen at all, even before it goes to Windows?I see Nothing at all. It just doesn't come on at all. I tried taking the battery out and holding down on the power button.Nothing. I held down on the power button to turn it on and it turns on but the screen doesn't come on at all Okay, well I agree that it does sound like a hardware issue that would have to be addressed by a TECHNICIAN. Could be the screen, could be the display adapter, could be the cable CONNECTING the screen to the motherboard. Hardware isn't my area of expertise so perhaps someone else might have some thoughts - otherwise your diagnosis is very possibly correct.Thank You for your helpSure. thomasthexpuserOP has a Realtek ALC888S audio chipset on a ASUS IPIBL-LA G33 chipset motherboard (HP Pavilion a6152n)

The "AMD High Definition" device installed is related to the HDMI output on the graphics card, and has nothing to do with the Realtek onboard chipset. It MIGHT just be just a fluke; Windows may be recognizing it as the default audio output device.

Boot into safe mode, uninstall the Realtek drivers and control panel, then boot back into Windows NORMALLY and reinstall them. Make sure you didn't download the drivers for another operating system.

Quick thought: I notice the Realtek sound chipset isn't even showing in Device MANAGER. Your computer isn't even acknowledging that it exists. Get into your BIOS and make sure onboard sound is enabled. If it lists "AUTO" and "ENABLED" as options pick "ENABLED"

Solve : Display drivers error upon update?

Answer»

I have a Sony Vaio VGN FZ340E running Windows Vista.

Several weeks ago, I had an error occur with my display drivers. My laptop screen flickered black and would come back on. After turning the computer off and powering back up, I recieved an infamous blue screen that reported an error with nvlddmkm.sys. I BOOTED in SAFE mode, uninstalled the drivers and REBOOTED with standard VGA display drivers. I have attempted to download and reinstall the drivers from Sony's website but every time I do, I still get the blue screen.

Long story short, I have been attempted to run a virus scan, Windows Defender and Malwarebytes Anti-malware scan. All of those reported no issues. I did do a DriverSweeper scan of the NVidia drivers which found many errors. It was able to fix all but 3 files which it can't repair.

Does anyone have any ideas?Post 3 and 4 in the below THREAD provide solutions to your problem.

http://forums.techarena.in/vista-hardware-devices/689444.htmWell I tried those steps listed but when I went to delete the three files listed in that 4th post, only the first one was there. nvvsvc and nvlddmkm were not even in the drivers folder. Is there a reason that those two files were not even installed after just INSTALLING the drivers?Did you go here - http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-home.pl?mdl=VGNFZ340E&template_id=1&region_id=1&tab=download#/downloadTab and download/install all video driver updates?Yes. You can install Microsoft Security Essentials which is more of the antivirus and antispyware protection for Microsoft.

Solve : Constant driver fault in AMD 5000 series-atikmpag.sys?

Answer»

Tried posting this in computer hardware. Guess with it being a driver issue it seemed suited better here.

The title says it all pretty much. Ive included a BSOD log as well. My current specs:

Motherboard: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. - Model GA-790FXTA-UD5
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition, 3200 MHz
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16gb CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9 ( x4 4 GB DDR3-1333 DDR3)
GPU: AMD Radeon 5870 1GB GDDR5

The main driver I keep seeing in the blue screens is the 'atikmpag.sys'. The BSODs are mostly "Graphic driver failed & could not recovery" kind of errors. It happens more often in newer games. Battlefield 3/SWTOR are prime culprits. Other minor games such 'Sniper: Ghost Warrior' and even 'A Game of Thrones: Genesis' will crash with this kind of error.
Im sick of the BSODs! If anyone can shed some light on what the PROBLEM may be, please help.

On a side note, ive used the program FurMark before to benchmark my video card and it rarely crashed the drivers surprisingly. It was only when I went to do 'burn in' tests that it auto crashed.

As mentioned above, a BSOD log has been included.

That is an item of interest.
You GPU is a Radeon 5870 - Right?

Do you have another video card? One that will work in your machine. Even a card with less performance. Try another video card, with the right drivers, and see what happens.

The objective is to make sure it really is the driver and GPU is really the key issue and not something else. Like maybe some buggy games. Or a glitch on the motherboard.

This is relevant, but don;t assume it is the right answer.
http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-cards/152798-ati-hd-5870-driver-problem.html

I think that n another GPU and proper drives will make it n100% certain that it is really the GPU and drivers. But make sure before you spend a lot of time trying to diagnosis the GPU drivers. The guy on this forum is having the same problem: http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f299/solved-bsod-with-atikmpag-sys-522149.html#post2942180

And it says [fixed] in the title Well I stripped the drivers, cleaned with CCleaner then used DriverSweeper to delete all remaining traces. I reinstalled CCC and driver combo and haven't seen any adverse effects so far. Been playing Assassin's Creed 2 for hours at a time with ZERO error. Keep the thread open for a day or so more. Will post again if something comes up.

On a side note, AMD should include all of these processes in their driver installations. They should remove, delete traces and install the new driver. Makes it a hassle to do it every time I get a new set of drivers. Anyhow, thats that for now. Thanks againSorry to revive the thread but it CONTAINS the same information Im about to get back into. Im still having problems with my driver crashing. Itll even crash in Windows outside of a game too. Was just surfing the web and my screen halted and nothing MOVED (although sound still did play). A few seconds later the screen went black and came back up with an error bubble in my system tray saying that the driver failed and recovered.

Any thoughts on where to begin?Near 100% of the driver issues with Windows 7 64 bit is the drivers are just not right from the start. They don't 'wear out' like tires on your car. Any and all programs that call directly e into the drivers must also be true 64 bit. Even when the go for hours, they can cause an error later on.

You need to get a video card that has proven drivers for Windows 7 64 bit. It it is stable with the another card, you have the answer.

This would imply the problem is not rare at all.You said that you installed new drivers right? And it still didnt work. I think the problem is with the graphics card hardware itself. Graphics cards seem to be the most failing hardware now adays. Often it is because of inadaquate cooling. MSI after burner is good for looking at graphics card temperature even with non MSI graphics. You could use that to check ur temps. If it's not cooling problem, then you will most likely need a new card.I'm with Linux711 on this one. It really sounds like a failing or overheating card. I'd start with checking the fan is working, and even take the card out, checking the fan and making sure the heatsink on the card isn't clogged with dust and that the slot and contacts of clear and clean. Then put the card back in and try again.

Solve : NVIDIA Geforce GT 220??

I was thinking of getting this http://www.coolermaster.co.uk/product.php?product_id=6801 along with my Geforce GT220 but I'm wondering if the PSU will be compatible with my INSPIRON 530?
Dell Inspiron 530 (UK could be different from US): http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19
That PSU LOOKS like a good choice at 32A, but I would be looking for one with two (2) +12VDC busses of about 20A each. Select your graphics card first, GeForce GT220 is the GPU not the manufacturer of the board. If you are lucky, they will specify amps instead of watts. It might even require it's own POWER connector.

I found this on legit reviews,

"Taking a look along the top edge of the card you will notice that it doesn't have any 6-pin PCI-E power connectors on it. This is because the card doesn't need any EXTERNAL power connectors. This is great news for those that own store bought Dell or HP systems as often you don't have any 6-pin PCI-E power connectors available inside your chassis. What size of a power supply do you need to run a GeForce GT 220? NVIDIA recommends that you have a minimum of a 300 Watt power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 18 Amps. Most power supplies have a sticker on the side of them that will show the ratings on it if you are unsure of what you have. "

Isn't this what I have? Though I don't want to be in the risk of overclocking, The psu you have in there now may work, too. If it does, you won't need a new one.so do you think I should try it?

Sorry, let me rephrase the question. What is the browser doing when you try to go to Microsoft.com? Is there an error message? Are you redirected elsewhere?

The inability to access Microsoft.com (as well as many anti-virus sites) can be an indication of a virus on your computer. Are you computers running AV software, and if so what AV software are you using?

2. my uncle who gave me the computer

I mean no offense to your uncle, but this advice is wrong. You want to go to the hardware manufacturer's website to get the driver specific to their hardware.

We'll need to figure out some model numbers if we're going to be able to find you the right drivers. Look around the outside of the system for a brand name and model number. If you can't find one, it's possible that it's a custom built system.

If the case doesn't have a model number, we can try something else first if you'd rather not open the system. Download Speccy. This software is free and safe. Install then run Speccy.

Speccy's interface is quite simple. Give it a moment to analyze your system, then it should tell you on the main screen the make and model of your motherboard as well as what audio device is currently enabled. (see thumbnail below)

Verify that the pictured computer is the one you have (Compaq Evo D510 Small Form Factor).

Download these drivers, then install them in this order, restart when noted.

1. Driver - Chipset -- Intel Chipset Support for Windows

2. Restart

3. Driver - Audio -- ADI SoundMax AC97 Integrated Digital Audio Driver

4. Driver - Controller -- Intel USB 2.0 Driver

5. Driver - Display/Monitor & Driver - Graphics: Download the one that matches the graphics adapter in your computer. Speccy should tell you which.

6. Restart

This should get most of your hardware working correctly.

Optional (install if you need to use network or modem):

1. Driver - Modem -- Lucent 56K Win Modem Driver

2. Driver - Network -- Download the one that matches the network hardware in your computer. Speccy should tell you which. Unnecessary if your network adapter is already working correctly.

Oh, and the fact that you can't get on Microsoft.com could indicate a virus. Certain viruses block machines from getting on Microsoft.com and anti-virus websites. But we'll deal with that once the drivers are installed.my computer crashedInfected...

my computer crashed

That's very vague. At what point did it crash? What were you doing when it crashed? What exactly did it do when it crashed? Error messages or codes? Is the computer still able to boot into Windows?

Simply saying "my computer crashed" doesn't help us DIAGNOSE the problem.

As Patio and I have both said, it's likely infected with something.when i was installing Driver - Controller -- Intel USB 2.0 Driver from that one site you gave me. a black vises box CAME up i shut it and then my mouse wouldn't work. i turned my computer off manually then turned it back on. I got the blue screen that told me to start it in safe mode. i tryed to but it would work. Quote from: hatedsamari on April 28, 2012, 07:14:36 PM
a black vises box

A what?

While installing a USB driver, it's normal for the ports to stop working momentarily and any USB device will be disrupted during that time. Shutting it off while in the middle of that could have caused problems.

You didn't mention the blue screen before. What exactly did the blue screen say?

Solve : Adobe Flash question?

Answer»

I was recently looking at a profile on the OKcupid DATING site when I was prompted to OPEN flashplayer. It LOOKED completely legitimate but, because I had NEVER been prompted to do this before on this particular site (and as it seems like I'm always reading about newer and more complex viruses), it MADE me paranoid. when I clicked "don't allow" the box kept re-opening. Finally I restarted the computer and, fingers crossed, everything seems okay-although I'm nervous about going on to that particular site again.

So I'd appreciate it if anyone could give me their input as to whether I dodged a bullet or if I'm just being paranoid. FYI-I wasn't being prompted to update (I've read about those viruses)-just to open it which doesn't really make sense since I assumed Flash is always open. You are not paranoid. In view of the current state of things, you behavior makes perfect sense.

My system has a current version of flash on it, but I get those update things nearly every week, but when I go to the adobe flash site it says my flash is OK.

And even Mac users are being spoofed by the fake flash update.

You may want to reviews your Anti-Virus plan.

Solve : USB Driver help needed (win 98)?

Unless your connection is dial-up, however, it's useless. I would just remove it in your situation. The connection is not the same; ethernet connectors look similar to standard PHONE connectors, especially in a picture, but they are a bit fatter and not compatible at all.

Having looked at the card and connectors again, I'd say they look identical to phone connectors. I wasn't sure at first because I had a look at some pics of ethernet cards and they looked similar to what I have. I'm still a little confused though because if device manager says the modem and its drivers are working, why is the same modem showing up as an unknown device in a different section? Also, should I uninstall the software before the card is removed or does that not make a difference?

Quote
The Sound card I'm not so sure about, again, according to the aforementioned specifications the system includes a sound chip. Are there connections on the rear of that card that lead you to conclude that it is the sound card? If your speakers connect to it, then it is. It could be an extra sound card, too. if nothing is connected to it, It's not necessary.

Yes, there are round connectors with different colors at the back. Ideally I'd like to get a couple of upgrades for this old pc, so it's compatible with wireless routers. The tech guy at my ISP told me the pc needed an ethernet card and something about being wireless or wifi enabled but he was somewhat of a tech snob and wasn't very specific. Apart from the card do you know what else I'd need for a wireless ROUTER? Would I need to go hunting around for old cards since because of the old motherboard?

I was thinking of having the usb connectors changed to 2.0 ones. Can that little usb "cube" be removed from the motherboard and upgraded or would I need a new mobo? I was under the assumption that old hardware only works with other old hardware (especially 10 year old motherboards). Quote

Sometimes they show up as multiple devices to support modem features. For example, some modems will show up as a sound device; Many video cards appear as a sound card as well because of their HDMI capabilities. Some later modems included driver software that was designed to allow the modem to be used directly as a network device directly. For Dial-Up, for example, typically what happens is you would run a separate program to connect; that program would establish a connection and keep it alive. After that, the software would activate a second driver so the system could see a "network card". The network card doesn't actually exist and is entirely software that mimics a network card to provide network connectivity through the modem, but in this way network-using applications don't need to care how the machine is connected to the internet. Usually that driver is only enabled or made active when you run the appropriate application to "enable" it, at least as far as I recall. Otherwise, it is either invisible, disabled, or appears "broken".

As for software/driver removal, I usually never bother to remove the software for a device before removing it, though it doesn't matter either way. The way windows works when it starts up is it basically looks at all the devices and looks for installed drivers for them. If one removes a device, windows won't really care since it simply no longer looks for the driver to initialize. It's usually a good practice to remove them however unless you plan to use the device again.

A wired ethernet card would not be directly helpful for wireless connectivity. What you would need instead is a wireless card, in the form of a wifi(802.11g/n) card. You can also find wireless adapters in the form of USB sticks, but given your other problems with USB it might be best to avoid those (and they are more expensive anyway).

You cannot replace the on-board USB connectivity with a newer one, but you can add a new Root hub in the form of an adapter card such as this one. I have two cards like this that I've used in a few older machines, the first one I installed one into was a machine that was originally sold in 1998-1999, and it worked fine. This one is particularly odd since it has a connector that is inside the case, too.

The little connector box that sticks out of the motherboard is really only the connectors. The actual logic that deals with the USB connectivity is part of the motherboard chipset, and so cannot be removed or replaced. One can instead just add a completely new USB Root Hub; one of these cards adds a second USB Root hub that is an "Enhanced" controller, which is the term used to describe USB 2.0 root hubs. I've not had to use it with anything earlier than XP, which was able to automatically detect and install them without any additional software. Thanks for the info. I guess I'll try 2000 and see how it goes. Does 2000 need a boot disc? I don't know if you can create a boot disk without the OS already being installed. The windows 2000 disc is bootable. Thanks for that. I had it in my head that I needed a 2000 boot disk because I was going to reformat but forgot the small detail of it still having 98se, which I have the boot disk for. Unfortunately, I didn't even get that far because as soon as I removed the network / modem card from the PC it wouldn't start. I could tell the power was on by the little red pilot light inside the tower but the PC just wouldn't turn on. No SOUNDS of any kind. Nothing.

I decided to plug the card back in and it magically worked again. So, I reinstalled the modem drivers it was asking for, turned it off and went out. When I got back and tried turning it on it was dead again. The pilot light was still on but apart from that, nada. The only thing I noticed was that the little light next to the "start" button in the front of the tower (which stays green when the PC is on) flickered once when I tried but that was it.

Now, what do think happened here? I don't recall touching any wires connected to the cards. I had to carefully move a ton of string tied cables / wires from the top fan box (ac unit?) that weren't hooked up to anything, so I could get a better grip of the card but that was it. I tried checking some of the wires and connectors to see if I had accidentally loosened something but it seems okay (unless I loosened or unplugged something closer to the rom drive which is hard to get to, let alone see). Am I just unlucky and had this thing suddenly die on me? I really don't get this. I've gone from a fully working PC with some USB issues to a dead one.

Since I have the side open can you tell me what I should look for connector-wise that might have caused this? It seems somewhat bizarre that it would just die. I made sure the power was turned off at the mains / wall each time before I tried anything.

Since I had the card out I thought I'd see if I could find out the FCC ID number but it only has the REG number (I was told there should be two sets, REG and ID, the latter being the important one). I noticed the card had an Intel chip on it. Do all cards have those? Here are the details (including other numbers I found on the card):

"FCC REG NO 5RJ TAI-36260-M5E"

Other numbers on the card: "LOO98H195819 L1H", "AC REN S/N 0.6B", "20111-082 60674", "AMI-2019E", "P9009 021"and "CPCMOP9009-02".

You might have loosened the power connector going to the motherboard.Could you describe what that looks like (color, thin / thick wire) and where it's located? Better yet, if you have a pic you could show me that would be great.
