Solve : Having some issues with my new graphics card that I believe are driver related.?

Answer»

Your computer is virus free?Yeah it's virus free. Haven't had a virus in quite some time.
I THINK I may just take it into a local computer shop and see what they make of it.

What virus scanner?

It sounds to me LIKE a device isn't functioning like it should. It's most likely a driver issue.

I think you should update the drivers for each device. You might also want to clear up a lot of start-up entries that could interfere with 3D applications or hardware in general.

Also, what refresh rate is your monitor set to and what refresh rate are you trying to run these games at? Is it a CRT or an LCD monitor?

Hey SORRY I sort of left this thread without ANSWERING your questions:

I'm running avast!, I have my monitor's refresh rate at 60 hertz, and I use a LN32B460 SAMSUNG LCD television as my monitor hooked up by an hdmi-hdmi cable.
This problem still unfortunately persists even after taking it into a local computer repair shop. They said they had no issue changing and keeping the resolution between restarts.

Which means it's probably something on my end.
I've tried multiple hookups to this monitor so it's not the cord. I doubt it's the monitor since it's worked fine for the last few graphics cards I've used.

Solve : External Floppy Disc Drive?

Answer»

I just purchased a USB Portable DISKETTE Drive. It did not come with instructions. I plugged it into my computer and inserted a floppy. I want to convert all of my floppys to CD. I tried to pull up two discs, and I got a WARNING box that says "not formatted". If I reformat the floppy disc I'll LOSE all the data. What should I do? I use Windows XP Professional. Thanks!USB floppy drives don't need instructions. Plug it in and use it like a normal floppy drive. The DISKS may be unreadable. Have you tried them in another computer?

Floppy diskettes are notoriously unreliable, and if haven't been used for some time are likely bad. If you reformat the floppy diskette you will LOOSE all data. Try reading the diskettes in another computer as suggested above. If the diskettes give the same error on another computer it's likely bad diskettes.

Don't know why your graphics performance is so low. My core i3 scores 5.9 for Graphics & 6.2 for Gaming Graphics.
Go to Control Panel---Performance Information & Tools. Run the assessment. It might actually say it needs updating.

[year+ OLD attachment deleted by admin]well, i tried but nothing happen..
and lucky you;)

i dont know what to do anymore.. its a new laptop.. and i cant even play games on it You may not have the latest Intel VGA driver (05/10/2011). Your laptop's are here: http://support.acer.com/product/default.aspx?modelId=3679well, I have installed it. ;/Well, today i have used program ''DriverFinder'' to find automatic drivers for my laptop and its shows me that my 10 drivers are out of date..

Never use a 3rd party tool to find "so-called" out of date drivers, especially for a laptop. Get them from Acer.Intel chipsets have never been very good for gaming. They just don't have the power required to run a game smoothly, especially 3D games. His Intel Graphics subscore is half that of mine with the same graphics processor core. I'd be interested to see what the memory SPECS are & if the 2 modules are a mismatch.Quote from: Computer_Commando on May 14, 2012, 05:43:05 AM

His Intel Graphics subscore is half that of mine with the same graphics processor core.

There could be any NUMBER of things that would lead to that, but it still doesn't ANSWER the question and is completely irrelevant. The Windows assessment is dodgy and makes poor judgments and doesn't measure system performance where it counts like proper benchmarking software does. The answer to his problem is simply Intel chipsets still aren't up to par for gaming, which is likely why the OP is experiencing lag.

Solve : Missing drivers. Researching for a week to fix myself but no luck. Please help.?

Answer»

Hi. As stated I have been researching forums and support services for about a week straight now without being able to solve my problem. I have tried many different suggestions and finally gave up. The problem is that I attempted a factory reset of Windows XP service pack 2. Once done I have been having certain issues and after researching I have deduced that the problem is I am missing drivers under the "other devices" category. What I am currently missing is PCI device, PCI Simple Communications Controller, Video Controller, and Video Controller (VGA Compatible). However, I have installed many things trying to fix the issue and when first completing the reset I am USUALLY also missing another, the bus controller I think? Bus something. I currently have my network driver installed in order to use the internet on the computer rather than my phone however that is possible as well as starting from complete scratch. I have attempted to use the driver installation disk provided by dell but it doesn't seem to work. Many suggested downloading each driver from the dell website in the order of system software, chipset, then others such as video, network, audio etc. I have tried many different times and even downloaded certain drivers to cds and tried to install them directly from the disk right after completion of a reset, But nothing seems to work. I am not sure if I have the incorrect order, or if I am not downloading the right thing. PLEASE HELP. IT WOULD BE APPRECIATED SO MUCH. It is a dell dimension E510 dm051. Solve : TOSHIBA EQUIUM M50-244 - Keyboard not Woving unless mouse moved?

Answer»

This is a issue with many Laptop models, I have a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Li 1718, This also has the keyboard problem, as well as the TOSHIBA EQUIUM M50-244 which i am TALKING about TODAY, both Laptops are 2004 - 2008 models, they both use a program/drive to enable the virtual mouse wheel, which LETS you move up and down a page FASTER, by flicking your finger from up and down on the side of the mouse pad, very cool and all when it does not effect the input of the keyboard, both laptops support Windows Vista, however I have Windows 7 installed on both of them right now,

When I have Alps touchpad driver installed, I have to move my mouse as i type, or the keyboard does not work, (meaning when i press a key, it does not enter anything, also the caps lock light does not turn on and off) unless i move the mouse, then everything works fine!

so i went about uninstalled alps touchpad drivers from the TOSHIBA EQUIUM M50-244 and everything worked fine after! I DONT have to move the mouse to type, which is a plus, over the virtual wheel on my touch pad,

Dont think Synaptics drivers are any better, there drives did the same thing with the Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Li 1718, Laptop ? :/

Solve : Installed update for AMD Catalyst Control Center - Graphics for games screwed?

Answer»

Hi, this morning when I woke up I had an update for my AMD Catalyst Control Center. It was update like 12.4 or something. Anyway, I installed it and it all installed RIGHT, but then I've been having some problems in games with the WORLD and my characters always bugging. It seems to happen on my characters face and surroundings.

It LOOKS like this:

Right click > View Image for a better view.Roll back to the previous driver. In the future, you should never update a driver unless there is a specific reason or need to do so.Could you teach me how? I completly forgot to make a restore point (I had just woken up) and it didn't make one for me.

I assumed it WOULD be necessary to install updates for the Control Center to improve, but this is the second time something similar has happened. =/Open Device Manager. Click on the display adapter item. Double-click on the display adapter LISTED. Click on the Driver Tab. Click on Roll Back.By the way, in the future you (and in my opinion ALL users) should start using disc imaging software on a regular basis.I'll test it. I think it may have worked. Thank you for the help. You're welcome. Keep us posted.Indeed it worked. I've been playing the games a few times today, no problems.

Thanks for the help.

Solve : Raid drivers for Asrock A790GXH/128M?

Answer»

Hi there,
First, my apologies if this post is in the wrong place or I have not posted right, this is my first post as a new user so PLEASE be gentle
OK first off I will list my current set up :-

Thermaltake X-aser midi tower case
Asrock A790GXH/128M Motherboard
Kingwin 800w Mach 1 PSU
2 x Western Digital WD3200AAKS-00V1A0 ATA Device (320GB) Hard drives
AMD Phenom II 940BE AM2+ CPU
Nexus FLC-3000 Cooler
Crucial Ballistix DDR2 4 GB : 2 x 2 GB Memory - DIMM 240-pin - 800 MHz ( PC2-6400)
ASUS Radeon HD 4830 Video Card EAH4830 512MB 256-bit GDDR3
WINDOWS 7 64bit O/S

OK, so here's my problem
I would like to use my two Hard Drives in a Raid 0 configuration but I am unsure on which drivers to use to achieve this.
My windows 7 64bit is an upgrade disc so I have to first install my Windows XP 32bit disc followed by the windows 7.
So which drivers do I use for Raid, XP 32bit or Vista 64bit ?(I assume Vista 64 bit are the same as Windows 7 64bit as there doesn't seem to be an update on the Asrock SITE)
I have never set Raid up before, so any other advice, tips or comments would be most welcome.
I am happy with my current PC as my graphics and psu are both mildly overclocked but stable with good temps, and play the games I enjoy with no problems.
My next upgrade will be a SSD for my O/S but until I can afford this, the Raid SEEMS the next logical step to take to squeeze a little more performance out of my Hard Drives.

Many THANKS in advance

Marillion

Solve : Driver Help!?

Answer»

Hi, i just DOWNLOADED bastion GAME and WHENEVER I try to play the game, there's always popping out

"No suitable graphics card found.

Unable to create the graphics device.

This program requires pixel shader 1.1 and vertex shader 1.1"

and then I posted something like this in my facebook and one of my friend suggested me to use http://www.systemrequirementslab.com which can tell you if you can run the game. Well, of COURSE, I just tried it and this is the result: http://i46.tinypic.com/315loox.jpg
after that, It suggested to download driver agent scanner something. Here's the result: http://i46.tinypic.com/2gtde7t.jpg
I tried to upgrade it using Driver Update but it requires money to register. I dont want to pay for something without any assurance.

I wanted to upgrade my video card but i dont know how and what to download. So, anyone out there can help me with this? You need to replace hardware. You need TWICE as much RAM as you now have, and a suitable video card. You cannot download these. You have to buy them and fit them in your computer.

R6002 -floating point support not loaded

What? That can't have anything to do with a graphics driver!
What program gives that message?
It a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error and should not happen in a graphics driver.alright, if it is so. well yeah, i forgot to write that on top(title) of the pop window it says microsoft visual c++ runtime library. ☺Well that might not be a issue with the graphics drive, but an issue with an application program WRITTEN in C++ and dependent on the MS run-time library.
Without more details it is hard to say what you do at this point.

when I went to USE my comp TONIGHT, instead of the usual blue power light, I had an amber light and I could nopt turn on the computer. No.
You will save a lot on those "experts" if you learn how to self-troubleshoot... And we'll gladly help you!

Try resetting your BIOS as a FIRST step:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pdp_L5IxaNI

If that doesn't work, try booting with just the essentials: 1 stick of RAM (Alternate RAM slots with each of the RAM MODULES to test), the CPU, nothing plugged into the PCI/PCIe expansion ports, and onboard graphics. Disconnect the hard drive.

Solve : Mouse conflicting with my Wacom Tablet?

Answer»

I have just installed a brand new Wacom Intuos4 pen tablet on my laptop. I had some initial problems with it crashing and the driver appeared to disappear. I had DISCUSSIONS with Wacom who told me to install a more recent driver.... which I have done, and it's seems to be BEHAVING itself today. Now my mouse/cursor is being very bad. The pen off the tablet is mostly OK, but the mouse sends the cursor and the screen a bit haywire, forcing me to use the pen to operate. Mostly it MISBEHAVES within the workspace and on the actual web page, not the toolbars.

It's an old mouse and a five year old laptop, both of which have been excellent until now. I love my Wacom and would like to resolve this and keep everything going along in harmony. Any suggestions? Check the manual here -> http://www.wacom.com/en/customercare/~/media/Files/Manuals/Intuos4_Wireless_Users_Manual.ashx
The testing optional mouse and troubleshooting steps might help you. Thanks for the link. It doesn't really say much re: conflicts, that I can SEE anyway. I've disconnected the mouse and rebooted the computer, and it seems to have resolved itself so far. My mouse is very old (12-14 y.o.!). Maybe time to upgrade. That is an old mouse. Maybe it just needs to be cleaned? I will try that, but it works when the Wacom is off.Quote from: copespeak on March 13, 2012, 02:17:33 PM

I will try that, but it works when the Wacom is off.

Then it is not a question of cleaning, I suppose!

Are you storing the pen near the tablet?

Solve : Dual Boot, Paragon Virtualization, and Drivers?

Answer»

Long story short: Windows 7 SP1, Home Premium, machine, old XP HDD connected with adapter. Imaged old HDD, and reimaged to new/W7 one.

Added XP entry to EasyBCD. From boot menu, XP would get to loading screen, but after which the machine would restart. Learned that I should "adjust" the OS with Paragon software.

Created bootable Paragon media, which informed me that it needed to inject certain drivers before adjusting. It listed one device as lacking drivers in particular:

Quote

Standard AHCI 1.0 SERIAL ATA Controller.

I searched for drivers on the Intel site, and downloaded several, but in particular all of http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Chipsets&ProductLine=Chipset+Software&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Rapid+Storage+Technology+(Intel%C2%AE+RST.
(Note that the ones I downloaded were all listed on the site as compatible with XP Media Center Edition, which is the variant of my old XP.)

I booted with the Paragon software again, but after checking each downloaded driver it CONTINUED to assert that the required driver was missing.

So, my request would be for help finding the appropriate driver.

Thanks in advance. You are, IMHO, making thins hard on yourself.
What motherboard do your have?
Do you have an old PATA (aka IDE) hard drive around?
You can just install XP on the old drive and WORK from thee.Motherboard: http://www.findlaptopdriver.com/pegatron-2ac2-corporation-specs-12152010h39/

I should have made clear that what I'm trying to do is to get the XP running with all programs and settings, on a DUAL-boot with W7. Hence the imaging and re-imaging of the XP drive.

The XP volume is SATA, by the way. Physically installing the thing in my W7 machine's case would be a last resort, as I've never done any hardware installations and would rather follow a software solution.Sorry I can't do more to help you.

Visualization sounds like a Virtual machine. There is a difference.
Personally I like a dual boot system. It is nice to try the alternative OS when something goes wrong with a certain program or hardware. With the price of Hard Drives now back down again, a three or four boot system is practical.

You should be able to run XP as a VM (Virtual Machine)inside Windows 7. However, using the same programs and settings might not be an option. The exception would be 'portable programs' that run without dependency on registry entries.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_portable_software
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_machine

This link is for those who are new to VM.
http://ask.slashdot.org/story/12/11/09/2226249/ask-slashdot-which-virtual-machine-software-for-a-beginnerHmm... Well, I really would like to get it up and running as though nothing had changed.

My understanding of the process was that EasyBCD would create an entry in the boot manager for XP, which could then be selected from a boot menu (and this was indeed successful). If XP did not boot following this (which it didn't) the likely cause would be incompatibility with new hardware, that is the lack of drivers for the new hardware - or something like that. What Paragon's software is supposed to do is "Adjust" the OS by "feeding it" the drivers.

See here: http://www.paragon-software.com/business/hdm-server/adaptive_adjust.html

Thank for looking, at least. But I do have a final question: With the motherboard that I linked to, would I be able to one day, if it comes to it, install the old HDD itself? The old HDD is, I BELIEVE, a:

Yes to compatibility? Would there be sufficient connectors? Power connector? All that. Just say if you need more details. (Though I suppose with that the thread suddenly belongs in the Hardware subforum...)Every desktop I have had also has a way to connect a old IDE style hard drive. Vheck the documentation. Funny thing about XP. You can have a DVD driven onb SATA and eventually get it to work. In fact, it will work. Don't know why. So one can put an old IDE HD where you would put the DVD. Then install e a SATA DVD drive. Sounds goofy, but I did that on one machine.
Maybe you could find a friend or relative that is comfortable with computer hardware.

BTW, many mobo BIOS have and option to let the SATA drive emulate the older a PATA drive. Don't remember what it is called. Cuts the transfer rate, but not too much. The Pegatron Corporation 2AC2 motherboard has 4 x SATA II 3Gb/s connector/ports and your Samsung hard drive is also SATA interface which means they are directly compatible. Oh my! The board has no PATA interface. Is says XP compatible. So they must offer XP drivers.
When it comes to dual-boot setups and imaging backups having each OS installed to seperate HDD's is the optimum situation in my opinion as 1 does not affect the other...Hi

If you read thru the information you posted at http://www.paragon-software.com/business/hdm-server/adaptive_adjust.html. it appears you are using an older version of adaptive restore which had limited driver support and was written for vista and server OS's. To do what you need to do you will need the latest version of paragon software with P2P support.

Solve : Re installing windows 7?

Answer»

Hi I have reinstalled windows as I had a major virus on my laptop and since doing this all my drivers aren't registered on the laptop and unable to go back to factory settings the recovery disc doesn't have and of the drivers on it. Can any one help? What is the make and model of your computer? It's a samsung NP300V5A-A0EUK
http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/model/NP300V5A-A0EUK-downloads

Go to the above link and download and install all appropriate drivers. I suggest you start with the chipset driver (about halfway down the list). After installing the chipset driver, reboot and install the rest.

Also, if you haven't DONE so already be sure to install a GOOD anti virus app and keep it UPDATED and resident.Yes I will be doing thank you but the only problem is we can't get online with the computer in question. It won't let us do anythingThen download the drivers on the system you are currently using, move them to a usb drive or a cd or an external drive, then COPY them to the system in question and install them.Grab them on another working PC then transfer them via a USB memory stik...Thank you very much
You're welcome. If you run into any further questions or issues, we're here Thank you it's now working Good to hear. Thanks for posting back.

One thing you want to do is look in DEVICE manager for any yellow or red symbols. If you see any, you still need to install a driver for that device. If not, you're good to go

Solve : why is there a lock icon next to a file to?

Answer»

So i went to my computer then clicked the hard DRIVE to see what files are in there and one of the files under my hard drive has a lock next ti it and when i try to access the files in that locked file it says i dont have pernission to access it. Why? Did someone in my house hold download something and lock those files somehow...PLEASE help me

[year+ old attachment deleted by ADMIN]Looks like a leftover file from Windows Update. You can try either MoveOnBoot (http://emcosoftware.com/move-on-boot) or Unlocker (http://www.filehippo.com/download_unlocker/)

Regardless, I wouldn't SPEND a lot of time worrying about it.The lock icon means the permissions of the folder are more restricted than those of the parent folder.

This is in this case certainly the result of Windows Update, as Allan has said.

Solve : Updateing BIOS?

Answer»

I want to thank you guys so much! Alan and Computer_Command I will never forget what you guys did! I will make sure I go to activision and tell them that by updating your BIOS it could fix your problem.

I can now play Black OPS and other games that would have done the same, You guys are the best!

I almost cried when I was updating my BIOS, so scared it wouldn't work lol.

Once again thanky ou and I hope you guys have a good New Years!Quote from: patio on December 27, 2012, 12:35:02 PM

I seriously doubt a BIOS flash is needed here to get a game running as it is just something the OP "read" on another site that made it work...and i think it's been overlooked here in this case...
What for example is the BSOD ? ?
Patio is one of our Mods. A BIOS flash fixing a game is very unusual, if not unique. We can all learn something from this.
PotatoMan: you have helped us learn something new. It would be interesting to know what the BIOS could have to do with this. If you ever hear back from Activision, just add to this thread.Glad you got it all sorted out

Good job CC Quote from: Computer_Commando on December 27, 2012, 01:46:31 PM
A BIOS flash fixing a game is very unusual, if not unique.

Not really either of those. Just one example: certain Gigabyte (as is the present case) motherboards with AMD FX CPUs had issues with Valve games that are fixed by BIOS update. LEADING edge games test hardware like no other software. It is quite common for things like (for example) CPU power stepping/throttling and general stability issues to be fixed by BIOS updates.

On the Activison forums it states that when the devs put the game out they found a bug with AMD CPU's and they were going to release a patch, some people found a way to get a round it. I'm sure Activision won't respond to me if I send them anything, but I will and then post it here. Thanks!I'm certainly glad i was wrong...and happy to hear you are fixed up...
Good group effort with a SUCCESSFUL SOLUTION...that's what we like here...

Solve : yes, npf.sys again...?

Greetings all!

The posts I found regarding this file were informative...thanks...

My question is what products or programs are *known* to install npf.sys?

My system is reporting the file missing, but I have no IDEA what product or program would have INSTALLED it.

Lastly, assuming something reasonable, like "I purchased and installed a wireless adapter, then later DECIDED I did not need it and uninstalled...and this is the cause for the remnant error..." what can I do to clean up the system so that it stops looking to start up this driver?http://www.file.net/process/npf.sys.htmlThanks much!

Solve : Unknown Driver needed?

Answer»

Hey all, I recently got a laptop from a friend; he didn't want it anymore because it kept restarting/running slow. Ran some anti-v's(Malware/CCleaner/SSD), chkdsk, and defragged it. Got it cleaned (771 registry keys corrupted hehe) and running a bit faster, but now it keeps throwing a hex error 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x8B058B66, 0xB8832f6c, 0x00000000), listing iastor.sys.

I've done some research and find that it has to do with an outdated driver? In a rare occurence of the laptop not restarting immediately, I tried to find which item needed new drivers, but all of them said the driver was the most current. I've also tried to use repair tools from boot options, but it threw a F3-F100-0004 error, which I can't seem to find an actual solution, just a "restore compute to FACTORY settings."

If anyone's able to lend a hand, it would be much appreciated. I know you'll probably need more information than what I've listed; just let me know what you need and I'll be as detailed as possible! Thanks!GO to the company web site of the manufacturer and update all your drivers from there. I don't think that will be the end of your problems with that COMPUTER however given the reference to the registry ERRORS However depending on where that information comes from there are MANY web SOURCES that dearly want you to deal with alleged registry errors through the use of their magical "software'. Do NOT be tempted to use any of those things. If you think you have trouble now wait until they get through with you.Given the recent acquisition of the computer this might be a good time to reinstall an operating system.truenorthRighto, thanks true. Will see what the website can do!

Solve : Is this a good way to remove old drivers from WinXP??

Answer» http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lucJTFFyqY

Do you recommend this method or is there a better WAY? Thanks for your comments.I'm not going to click on your link, but why are you trying to remove drivers?Specifically to deal with my current issue associated with the video card (hardware sub-forum). But I also want to know generally just for future reference and to satisfy my curiosity.

I probably should have made my original POST in the driver sub-forum but I completely did not see it and didn't even know I had a driver issue. The correct way to UNINSTALL drivers is the same way you uninstall any other program (in XP use ADD/REMOVE and in Vista and W7 you use Programs & Features). Additionally, a number of hardware manufacturers provide "uninstall" utilities on their websites to insure complete removal of their old drivers prior to installing new ones. Its ACTUALLY, better to keep them. If you install a newer driver that doesn't work you have something to go back too.

Solve : Windows Critical Update wrecked my Wired Network Adaptors?

Answer»

I'm not a techie or even close.

Naturally, just as the other times my PC became USELESS--tax time, times when online term paper overdue and FINALLY got a day off to study/finsh, like today--and other similarly glorious times, my PC is useless again.

I spent all last weekend and the one before fixing SOMEthing and having to reinstall my OS last weekend after a geek wrecked my PC trying to install AV software for me (when I asked to do it myself) by remote! Of course I had to install the software myself after all, after first saving that PC.

And now, a "critical update" overnight by windows killed my access to the Net from my laptop, and the error message is what other sites say is a corrupted driver for my Realtek Network Driver(s).

I can't use this PC I'm CONNECTED to the Net with for studying, for medical reasons. If I can't get back on with my laptop, I'm in serious trouble.

I went to Dell, downloaded all onto a disc for my 1564 Inspiron Windows 7 64 bit EXACTLY as instructed, and it seemed to go okay, but the "DOWNLOAD MANAGER" that comes with it is all that shows up on the disc. I can't see any others (actual driver) files.

I tried doing the zipped and unzipped, and when I put them in my laptop disc drive, it hums and then INFORMS me the install has failed. I saved the message, which is about dll.serve or something not being found.

I have had 3 weekends like this and am thus 3-4 weeks behind in school and don't know whether to puke, cry, or go postal. I am over the edge with this.

Please tell me what if anything I can do that isn't 16 hazardous steps.by dowloaded all, I mean I used my key to identify the drivers factory-installed and any updates since then for chipsets, and Network adapters, and with the list you select comes a "DellDriverDownload Manager", which is zipped unless you choose for it not to be. Since I tried zipped and nothing happened, I did over using unzipped, since it's not a self-unzipping, I guess, and doesn't get unzipped for you. Which may be why I can't see any dirver files separately, using the laptop or this PC to view what's on the disc.

With either of them, nothing happened.

Since I got the laptop, it has been telling me I need Microsoft Net Framework Version 2.0, but when I go to the site (several times, to be sure) and look to manually update, the diagnostics say I'm already updated--since the day I got the effing machine!

The Dell Drivers download site does say you need to have a particular add-on for Mozilla to download the drivers, so I added it onto this PC to download them onto the disc....looked very old add-on, but my PC said I did not have that file.

Just extra details in the thin hope I can be helped.

Solve : lifecam vx-3000 won't install?

Answer»

I installed lifecam suite 3.2 from website today and then plugged in my webcam (lifecam vx-3000) and it will not find the correct driver.

It looks for a driver still even though I just installed it.

I have included my DXDIAG info attached to this post.

How can I install this webcam?

I even tried pointing the unknown hardware device to the folder of the driver and it said it could not find one.

MS products work even worse on their own operating SYSTEMS

Help is needed thanks.

- ok I just installed one part of the driver from "add from driver list" > Imaging Devices > Microsoft > then the model "vx-3000" and there is two versions (both of which seem to be out of date) the first one works for the usb camera unknown device and the first nor the second one work for the unknown device (the second unknown device that is still on the list (im guessing possibly an ADDITIONAL device that is attached to the webcam like the webcam button.. I have no idea but either way this webcam still doesnt work and I still have not fully installed it.

*** lastly when I choose any of the two DRIVERS on the add from list (the ones with the dates that installed the first device.. I get a blue screen when trying to install them for the second device that again is somehow part of the webcam.

Please ask me to re-state anything if you can not understand it. Thanks.

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]What OS?

Looks like MS Server OS 2003 or 2008 etc?

I ran into driver issues with a security webcam a logitech on a server 2003 system in which I had it mounted to LOOK out from our 42U server cage through the mesh screen hole in the door of the 42U cage and see who was going into server room unauthorized. I ended up having to place a laptop running XP Pro into the 42U cage and run the webcam off of this OS instead. The good thing is that the problem was solved when the cleaning person got fired. Someone gave them a master key to the entire building and they should have only had access to offices etc. They were snooping around and stealing stuff. Small things started disappearing from server room and peoples offices. Problem was solved and laptop and webcam removed. But memory remained of issues with Server OS and Webcam device drivers.Hey so the OS is windows 7 64 bit build 6001 and updates are not an issue. Its cloned to a different hard drive which is yes somewhat relevant to the problem but im not sure why. (HAL drivers were specified in order to clone the drive to a different drive.) Also I use this same OS (or Backup) for other computers I own. No other driver conflicts have happened within 3 years of having this OS.

When I specify a driver from add from list like in the picture I attached, it installs the same driver again (I think). This fixes the issue with other drivers I have with other machines.

The driver from list method works for the first device but not for the second of the two.. as shown in the picture.

Thanks Quote

Its cloned to a different hard drive which is yes somewhat relevant to the problem but im not sure why.

So you have 2 drives for the same computer, both the same build, one of which is a clone of the original build, and one of the drives has an issue and the other doesnt?

So one drive has an issue with this device and driver and the other is happy so its corruption and not a hardware or driver issue that you need fixed since both the device and driver on hand play well with the OS when the OS doesnt have corruption, so you need to correct for the coruption so that the driver will behave?no not different drives I should have said simply that this is a cloned OS sorry. Different computers in the past have used this OS with no problems with my webcam. I own these computers.

The problem is on my main computer with 1 hard drive. Possible driver corruption I suppose and I did uninstall and re-install the webcam software from the microsoft site over and over.

I wonder if there is a registry key that is not being deleted but lastly and most importantly this problem also arised awhile ago with my previous webcam which was an HD one.. same OS

I have no problems at least that persist with this machine, (hardware or software) other than this webcam driver.

ThanksIf it's a cloned OS then the clone image carries the drivers from the PC that was cloned...not neccessarily the one it's installed to...
Start by re-installing all drivers...MBoard Chipset drivers go 1st...then re-boot...then all others.
Reason is many devices rely on the chipset drivers being correct...Makes sense I will try that and then re-post if it fixes it. Thanks. If the chipset drivers were somewhat incorrect then wouldn't I be getting warning flags in the device manager with the CPU, and other chipset devices and controllers? This is usually what happens no?

It is crazy to me that Microsoft still after all these years have not developed a better system than the vague event log viewer. Tell us why something happens not in code or reference but right in the log. Oh and computer problem solutions from the action center are elementary and are barely helpful (at least with any substantial problem). If MS was efficient at what they do we wouldn't be here...Quote

I was having a problem with red "X" and my windows being to big to fit the monitor without my constantly adjusting them. So A tech had me reset the resolution. I think it was even higher than it is now. I think both numbers were 4 numbers.

I reset it because of my vision.

But I uninstalled IE 9 and reinstalled IE8 which helped with the red "X" problem.

I ACTUALLY want to run the AOL Clean Up program but I'm afraid to try and LOAD it. Yesterdday it took all day until around 4 AM to run a scan of 266,531 files.

My girl here has issues and I'll present more to CH in the next few days.

Why would the resolution cause the DD to stop frequently while playing MSN Games?

I recently did a recovery on my laptop however after doing so my laptop speakers are not working please help
Download & install the audio drivers from the laptop manufacturer. What else isn't working? And how did you do this "recovery" ? ?If you haven't already make sure you do all your Windows Updates including the optional updates.

Next Right Click on Computer or My Computer, select manage, it may take a sec... Then select device manager if the sound DRIVER is not INSTALLED you can download it from the HW vendor or point at windows.old on the C drive if it is there. If you do have the driver installed you can right click on it, uninstall it, right click on something else and then select check for hardware changes to make it re-install the driver.

Other Notes on sound
- green is usually the output but try them all just in case
- on external powered speakers if you turn up the volume and tap the end of the jack you should hear a noise ( if you don't your speakers are likely bad
- make sure you are not muted :-)
- Oh and if you don't have speakers plugged in (or have them plugged into the wrong place the speaker I on will usually show that sound is disabled

Hope this helps,
Thanks

Solve : I need driver help please!?

I have a Toshiba, Qosmio X305Q705
Recently I had a virus. I struggled clearing it out and gave up after it got to where I couldn't boot in safe mode anymore.
I re-installed Windows from recovery disk.
Everything loaded, Windows loaded FINE and is working.

Vista Home Premium
Service Pack 1
All the drivers loaded fine except for the wireless driver. It was there, but shows the yellow warning sign in device manager.
I uninstalled it.
This computer has not been online since the install.
I went on line with another computer, to Toshiba's website. In the driver download section I put in my laptop model to search the available drivers.
There are 3 different ones that they say could work. I have installed each one and none of them install without the yellow warning, and I can't get my wireless working.
When I click on the driver open teh properties window it says:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
thxMany WLAN devices rely on the chipset driver to work properly...
Re-install the MBoard chipset driver...re-boot and then try the wireless drivers again...I went back to toshiba looking for the chipset driver.
the only one I see is for Windows 7.
So how do I find this chipset driver?I have a question or two.

I found instructions that say look in the registry?
I did regedit and went to see the driver?

HKEY-LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\INTEL\INFINST
Look at teh line with Install. on the right is says, success.
they SAID that means it installed correctly??

It says its version is, 8.7.0.1007
I still don't understand how to find it on line, and how to know if the one that's already there, is good or bad. Were you advised on other forums to check on the registry? If you were able to reinstall your Vista OS, it should follow the chipset driver followed by any other flags or exclamation showing from the device manager. Look for the exact Vista drivers for your laptop >Here< and use the drop down box to look for chipset and wifi (Atheros or Intel) driver for Vista.

QUOTE

It says its version is, 8.7.0.1007
That is your Intel chipset current driver version according to the download page. Ye[p, been there and loaded it.
Nothing changed.
The wireless adapter is the only thing in the device manager with the exclamation point warning.

I didn't change anything in the registry, just looked.

Now I'm starting to remember, I think this same thing happened a few months ago.
I had installed a new hard drive and loaded the OS from the same recovery disk set, and the wireless wouldn't work.
I had someone look at it and he said it needed "Intel Rapid Storage Technology".

He put that in it and I believe that's what got the wireless to work.
I found it on the net and loaded the two files but I didn't understand all of the set up instructions.
So maybe I'm close? But still not working.

Remember this computer still has not been on line and only has service pack 1, and no updates. Maybe it needs all the updates?
I don't have a convenient wire connection at home.
Should I go ahead and hook it up on the wire and get all the updates?Quote from: jimpl on NOVEMBER 18, 2012, 01:43:19 PM

(Code 39)
thx
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123

If these don't fix it, the device is damaged or turned off.Are you suggesting that the switch for my wireless is bad or off?
It's in the on position and was working before I ran the recovery disk.

Something to note,
Near the end of the install, (I'm guessing where it installs all the drivers) I got a message that said:

Windows requires a digitally signed driver.
A recently installed program tried to install an unsigned driver. This version of windows requires all drivers to have a valid digital signature. The driver is unavailable and the program that uses it might not work correctly.
Uninstall the program or device that uses this driver and check the publishers support site to get a signed driver.
Driver:
Intel Wireless WiFi Link Driver
Service Intel Wireless Link Adapter
Driver for Windows Vista 64 Bit
...
Well this was still with the disk in and loading drivers. There was no programs running.
I did delete the WiFi link 5100 AGN in the device manager and loaded another one, deleted it and loaded another one.
3 Times!

Did you see my reference to the Rapid Storage thing?
Do you think it's not related?Quote from: jimpl on November 18, 2012, 01:43:19 PM

Drivers may or may not be digital signed, doesn't matter.

Looks like your WiFi is Atheros which is the one of the more popular.

Wireless LAN Card Check
Run device manager.
If any of the following adapters are found under "Network adapters", apply Driver: 7.7.0.288.0. If none of the adapters are found, then this driver is not for your computer.
Atheros AR9280 Wireless Network Adapter
Atheros AR9281 Wireless Network Adapter
Atheros AR9283 Wireless Network Adapter
Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter

Driver Version Verification
Run Device Manager.
Open properties of the appropriate Atheros Wireless "Network adapter".
Atheros AR9280 Wireless Network Adapter
Atheros AR9281 Wireless Network Adapter
Atheros AR9283 Wireless Network Adapter
Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter
Verify that the Driver Version is 7.7.0.288.
Click Driver Details... in the Driver tab.
Select athr.sys or athrx.sys.
Verify that the File version is 7.7.0.288.

Rapid Storage has nothing to do with WiFi.There are only 2 Intel Wifi driver for Vista and Vista/Win 7 64 bit
Intel Wireless LAN Driver for Windows Vista / 7 (64bit)(v12.4.0.21.1; 05-15-2009; 5.38M)
Intel Wireless LAN Driver for Windows Vista(v12.0.0.73.0; 06-19-2008; 3.91M)
Its either you run the exe or provide the path of the downloaded driver thru the device manager, hardware wizard PROMPT of the adapter. Unless its faulty which were hoping its not.
I'm not sure I understand.
I know how to click on the drivers and they automatically load, but I haven't done it any other way.
What is it that would be faulty?Quote from: jimpl on November 20, 2012, 02:11:24 PM
I'm not sure I understand.... What is it that would be faulty?
The Atheros device. When I click on Network adapters, two things are listed.

1. Intel (R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN (which is the wireless driver I downloaded right?) It has the exclamation point.
it's the 12.4.0.21 driver.

2. Realtek RTL8168C (P)/8111C(P)... (which is for the ethernet cable connection right?)
So how do I find out if I have this Altheros device?Success!
I wrongly installed the Atheros thing and immediately uninstalled it.
I re- downloaded the Intel driver and installed it.
this time it worked. I didn't do anything different, but I'll accept getting lucky anytime if it works.
Thank You for your help.

Solve : 'Invalid Format' When Connected to External Monitor?

Answer»

My colleague and I are in a client's conference room.

When he plugs his laptop in, and directs his Dell to use "Duplicate" screen, "Invalid Format" appears on the external monitor.

When I plug mine in, the monitor works fine.

We are both using Dell Latitude E6400s and Windows 7. His is a 64-bit machine, mine is 32-bit.

He has had no issues plugging into external monitors and projectors at other clients' sites.

We have updated his video driver from the Dell website. It did not make a difference.

The monitor is a big honking LG flat screen.

Looking for suggestions?

Maybe try adjusting the res before plugging the monitor in. Try a low common resolution like 1024x768.For some reason, it wanted to "force" (for lack of a better word) the dual monitor feature to use the highest resolution available for both, instead of allowing us to set the primary for one and the secondary for another.... Once we clicked through that a bit, we were able to adjust the resolution.

Thanks! (It seems the STANDARD two pieces of ADVICE are always: 1) Reboot, and b) Update your drivers. So after doing both of those, I was STUCK - so thanks!)

Enabling Driver Verifier
You can enable Driver Verifier by using Verifier.exe. Verifier.exe is included with every copy of Windows and automatically installed into the System32 folder. Verifier.exe has both command-line and graphical user interface (GUI) interfaces, so you can specify drivers and appropriate levels of verification. You can also see Driver Verifier statistics in real time. For additional information, refer to the "Driver Verifier Manager" section of this article.

Windows 9x have various drivers for ATAPI CD-ROM drives; CDFS.SYS and ATAPI.SYS handle this in all versions of Windows 9x. If a CD-ROM drive doesn't work, either it's not ATAPI, or there is an issue with the controller that prevents it working; or, a conflict with a real-mode driver such as MSCDEX being loaded in autoexec.bat.

But... that said, we know next to nothing about the Original Poster's configuration; though they do seem to be under the impression that "online videos" require a driver. If i had to guess I'd say it was about codecs I think we can safely say that any debate/discussion about which versions of windows do and do not support Optical drives as part of the Out-Of-Box-Experience will probably not help the Original Poster, though.

Drive vs Driver

Define driver

"A program that controls a device. Every device, whether it be a printer, disk drive, or keyboard, must have a driver program. Many drivers, such as the keyboard driver, come with the operating system. For other devices, you may need to load a new driver when you connect the device to your computer. In DOS systems, drivers are files with a.SYS extension. In Windows environments, drivers often have a.DRV extension.

A driver acts like a translator between the device and programs that use the device. Each device has its own set of specialized commands that only its driver knows. In contrast, most programs access devices by using generic commands. The driver, therefore, accepts generic commands from a program and then translates them into specialized commands for the device."

Definition of Computer Disk Drives

"Computer drives are an integral part of any computer system, be it a PC or a Mac. They perform a variety of different functions ranging from storage to CD and DVD input. Through input and output of different types of data, they give us the flexibility to customize and control the functionality of our computer systems.

Functionality

Computer drives come in many sizes and shapes. They allow the user to input specific types of information to be stored in the computer's memory. Many drives are input-only, meaning they can only read information. Other drives, such as CD and DVD writers, can output information to physical media.Well, EddiA, what sayest thou? I'll accept the fact you know more about it than i though...Click on the start and go to search, type in drivers in the files and folders category and you will find all of your computer drivers...

Or you can just go to the manufacturers site and download the drivers you need.

Solve : Device Manager showing double chipset in Display Adapter?

Answer»

Identical chipsets are showing up in the Device Manager, but looking at the computer PAGE, I see that it says Core 2. That means dual core, right? So we'd expect to see two identical chipsets?Display Adapter?Yes. The computer is running XP, and in Device Manager, Display Adapters is the THIRD item down the list, after Computer and then Disk Drives.
There are two items there, both with the same name: Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset Family.

While we're at it, I might mention that there are also two keyboard items (identical) and THREE monitor items (identical). I deleted the second of the keyboard items, which caused the keyboard to stop functioning, despite the presence of the first item, and upon rebooting, both keyboards showed back up. I haven't deleted both keyboard items yet, but that's my next move, if only to see what HAPPENS.If you don't know what will happen when you delete SOMETHING then I advise against doing it just to see what happens.

Solve : External Hard Drive Help?

Answer»

I rarely ask for help in forums because I'm the type of the guy who must solve problems immediately. Unfortunately, I'm slightly ignorant with computers. So I would like some help and along the way I'd like to be more educated about the stuff I use in my daily life. I'll try to be as specific as possible.

I just bought a 750GB WD My Passport Essential SE external Hard drive. It is my first time using an external hard drive and i mainly just stick with flash drives. They're simple and small and do the job.

Anyway, the main reasons I bought a new hard drive is because I would like to be able to watch movies/shows on my Xbox 360 using my external hard drive.

So when I put the hard drive in, it gives me all this trouble about downloading this software (apparently it comes with a software called WDSmartware) and makes me set up a password and started automatically backing up my entire computer. I started to regret the purchase because I'm just a simple guy who just wants to store files and watch movies. These extra features are completely unnecessary.

After going through the hassle of setting that up, I find out that my Xbox 360 can't even read the *censored* thing and I scour through the interwebs looking for an answer.. What i came upon (i don't know how much is true) is that i guess i need to reformat the external hard drive from NTSF to FAT32. I scour the interwebs once more and come across two options. MSDOS and this FREE software SwissKnife.

After a painful 2-3 hours of waiting for MSDOS to finish converting.. That's when the %$*$ tells me that my hard drive is too big to be converted so i go to option 2..

I don't know what happens (it's late and i'm tired) so i'll just make it simple

1. i deleted the primary partition
2. I created another partition with File System (Fat32)

and not even a minute passes by and it's finished converting.
Considering my bad luck with technology, I know it seems too good to be true so i check the hard drive and guess what?
Now i only have 200gb of space.
I tried converting it back to NTSF and it still gives me 200gb of space

So here are my questions:
1. What have i done?
2. What are partitions?
3. Did i permanently reduce my hard drive into 200GB worth of space?
4. What SHOULD i do?

thank you for your help in advance.. I'll go to sleep now..

edit:
oh and because i FORMATTED it or deleted the primary partitions.. the programs and driver software that came with the external hard drive are deleted.. =(You should be able to delete the partitions on that drive. Then create 2 partitions on it. The primary partition I would set up with FAT32. And the second partition I would set up as NTFS.

Custom Size your partitions - Create the FAT32 partition to that of the minimum you can live with, as for the FAT32 is wasteful in cluster space it takes up on the platters. The lesser the FAT32 partition the greater your NTFS secondary partition size will be since NTFS packs the data on the platters in smaller 64-bit clusters, less wasteful than FAT32.

As far as the software that you deleted, you should be able to reaquire it from western digitals website under support and downloads.

http://searchwindowsserver.techtarget.com/answer/Efficiency-of-FAT32-versus-NTFSThis tropic is now over 30 days old.

If the OP is still around, did he find a solution to this? Others have had problems like that with some external drives. It would be interesting to know what the OP finally did.

Looking back, it would have been better to just get a refund on the drive. But likely too late now. Unless he was able to get a good warranty or refund arrangement with the vendor. Some vendors might allow exchange for a similar drive.

Just curious.I don't know did you find a solution but I RECOMMEND you to contact WD support.I want to know if your problem solved??I come cross the same problem....Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 29, 2011, 09:30:45 PM

It would have been better to read the documentation that come with the drive before messing around with it. I believe this is a major cause of most problems as people are either in too big of a hurry or think they know what they are doing instead of checking with the documentation first.Quote from: mroilfield on July 03, 2012, 02:47:55 AM

Solve : Issues with ASUS F5SR audio driver/crackling?

Answer»

I have an Asus F5SR that I hadn't powered on for about 6 months until a few days ago. When I did use it again, it was to connect it to a TV to play a movie, with the AUDIO connected to a DVD-player with surround sound speakers. It was then that I noticed that the audio for the movie I was watching crackled. I first changed the audio to the laptop's speakers, and the audio also crackled, so the issue aren't the speakers. I then played the movie on a different system, and the audio was fine.

I then considered that the audio driver may be the issue. I have been using the Windows 7 audio driver, auto-installed at the operating system's first-RUN, with which I hadn't had any issues since then. Now I downloaded the manufacturer's audio driver for Windows 7 and installed it to see if it changes anything, but after a necessary system restart the audio crackling was now worse and constant.

Just to be sure, I uninstalled the driver and let Windows reinstall its standard audio driver, and it worked the same as before, and then I tried reinstalling the manufacturer's driver, and the increased crackling appeared again.

Upon reading about the issue through Google, I couldn't find a solution, but I did stumble over something half-useful. Right-clicking on the TASKBAR volume icon and going to "Playback devices", and then clicking the "PROPERTIES" button for "Speakers", under the "Advanced" tab in the new window you can change the quality of the sound when the speakers run in shared mode. The setting is by default at the minimum "16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality)", and if I change it to anything higher and test it, the audio starts crackling as it does with the manufacturer's audio driver.

All in all, I can only see it as a driver issue. If anyone has any ideas as to what may be the cause of this, or suggestions as to what to try to fix it, they would be greatly appreciated.Good evening dirk101

I did have an issue like his before but it was not a laptop the unit is a DVD surround system but please bear with me and this was my issue.

On my DVD/surround system when I played a move I too got the crackling and this never happened before and after some checking and a close look at my wires one wire was chewed some and they would touch each other only during the movie.

When this happened we had a new puppy and he chewed one wire some and once i fixed the wire all was good again.

But point being did you try playing the movie on battery power (no ac adapter) if that doesn't work / help go into your sound options and try muting the MIC. But if on AC power this is the only time it happens look closely at the AC adapter for EXPOSED wiring.

Also mute all other sound options, if there are modem sound options, also i think W7 has a tab for enhancements where you can disable bass boost, room correction etc you can try disabling them also.

Plus if you have a bluetooth (either internal or USB one) either disable or un-plug it. Bluetooth is known for causing issues and interfering with speakers / your sound.

Hope this helps. Mike Quote from: hartbeatmr on July 21, 2012, 12:15:01 AM

You obviously DIDN'T read his question.

His speakers crackle either through external speakers, or through the laptop itself.

I'm thinking hardware here, is it still under warranty? Has it been dropped?

My daughters computer had an issue with Foxconn Motherboard integrated sound adapter dying, and I added a StarTech USB sound adapter for $13 from newegg. She is running Windows XP Pro SP3 with 1GB DDR400 on a Pentium 4 HT 3.0Ghz. This was the cheapest fix since I didnt want to put much money into a Pentium 4 system. She is happy with it now because she is 8yrs old, but at some point I will be faced with her wanting to run something that the Pentium 4 wont be able to handle. So far so good with it loading her leapster games etc and her favorite game Angry Birds, as well as all other educational games that she can play that have been added to approved sites. Game her very RESTRICTED access!

For a laptop, this is the only solution other than replacing main board if it is truely a blown AUDIO circuit like my daughters was. My daughters system is a computer tower that I spray painted the boring beige tower pink at her request. I COULD have installed a sound card, but this USB adapter was the cheapest solution. Other benefit also is that I added a USB extender cable, and so if she gets up with headphones on and walks off it simply disconnects from the USB port on the extender as a quick release, snapping off in USB port on motherboard.

Solve : does the absence of this two drivers affects my audio system?

Answer»

I have checked at the device manager OPTION of my computer and noted that the drivers for video controller(VGA compatible) and Multimedia Audio Controller are not installed. Does this affects my audio system because as at now am not able to listen to any sound.
I also came across another Computer with Multimedia Audio Controller as the missing drive but it played sound and could even produce the WELCOME sound of windows XP. please assist If you see any FLAGS on your device manager, use the CD driver that came with your system or download by the support site. You may be referring to Windows system sounds which also requires the audio driver be installed. One device change I would attempt to see if the driver files are available. UNINSTALL the driver files in device manager and restart your computer to see if they load automatically. That has worked well with other computers. Should the files not reload, then you can find them at RealTek 97 Audio.

Solve : Free driver update software??

Answer»

I know Windows 7 will update drivers automatically, but I'm running XP on an older lap top and am having some issues LOCATING drivers. Are there any GOOD, FREE programs out there to assist with this? I've tried a few I've found, and they usually find whichever driver you need (supposedly), but then they won't allow you to actually update it unless you purchase the full version of the program (booooo!).Let's start at the top, shall we?

First, Windows 7 does NOT update drivers automatically. And while you can use Microsoft Update to update drivers, I recommend against doing so. Drivers should only be updated if and when there is a specific need or reason to do so.

Second, you should never use any 3rd party software to update drivers.

Third, laptop drivers should always and ONLY be obtained from the website of the laptop manufacturer. If you FEEL you need to update any of your drivers, that's where you need to go.OK, so maybe what I meant was that W7 made it a lot easier to locate drivers through the device manager than XP does, but maybe that's just my opinion.

I've tried going to the Mfr's website, but the problem is that in the device mgr there is something listed that I cannot identify, so I don't know what driver to look for. The name of the device is labeled as 'unknown device'. How can I FIGURE out what that is?Device manager is essentially the same through all Windows version. W7 is not different from XP or Vista.

1) Under what heading in device manager is this unknown device listed?

2) Are you having any problems with the system (are any devices not working properly)?

3) Are there any external devices connected to the computer?

4) If you like, you can right-click on the device in device manager and uninstall it. If it's needed, Windows will reinstall it on the next boot.I just checked and there are actually two items listed. They are both listed under 'Other devices', one is the aforementioned 'unknown device' and the other is 'PCI device'. This is a fresh install on a reformatted HD so I'm just trying to get everything up to date, and there are no external devices connected.Go to the website of the laptop manufacturer and download and install the chipset driver for your system.I never ever figured out why people seem to need a Driver Update program...

That's just me i guess. In this case I was only looking for a driver update program because I couldn't figure out what the two drivers I needed were. Turns out the unknown one was for 'HP Quick Launch buttons' (on a COMPAQ laptop?) and the other was the conexant modem driver. It just turned out to be trial and error as I downloaded every driver listed on the Mfr website.Well, glad you're back in business. Thanks for the update.
