Solve : Is always best to use updated drivers??

Answer»

Hi all again.

I'm in a dilemma of choosing to upgrade my NVIDIA 7800 GTX 512 drivers (91.31) to the latest (178.24)

I've tried it before but the installer kept INSTALLING the windows 2000 drivers instead of the windows xp ones.

It is quite strange as the filename and the website quite clearly states the drivers are for Windows XP.

91.31 seems to be the only stable driver I have and it doesn't seem to have any problems even thought I play GRID and all the new-ish games.

Has anyone else had this problem of the latest drivers?Did you TRY here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_178.24_whql.htmland what makes you think it's installing the windows 2000 drivers? Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 27, 2008, 10:49:57 AM

and what makes you think it's installing the windows 2000 drivers?
This also begs the question of where this XP CD is from.... yes I ALREADY tried that SITE. The reason why is that the installer for the 178.24 driver installs in the "Win2k" folder, hinting it is installing the Windows 2000 driver only. And also after restarting the computer as it tells me to, the colours of everything in XP are all garbled/distorted as it is using the 2000 drivers.

When I roll back to 91.31 (this says its compatible with only Win XP/2000 and Windows XP Media Centre Edition, hence the file NAME: '91.31winxp2kmce_english_whql'), the installer installs in the "Win2kXP" folder and all the colours and everything else is normal, even though the driver is outdated.

I'm thinking that I have to install the media centre editions of these geforce drivers.I've been researching and the latest driver does not list my NVIDIA 7800 GTX 512MB in the 'products supported' page while the 91.31 driver does list it in its 'products supported' page...

Would the latest driver still support it? It still lists the normal NVIDIA 7800 GTX and it has something on the 7800 GTX 512mb in the release notes.

I found this is the newest driver for the 'Win2kXPMCE'

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_94.24_2.html

it lists my graphics card as supported

or should I use this?

Please help!Have you tried going to your Computer Manufacturers Website, going to Drivers and Downloads, locating your Computer Model and downloading Audi/Multimedia Drivers?yep..I don't know what exactly to do. Nothing I download that is supposed to fix it seems to be working at all.Ok, go to Device Manager and see if you can find any Yellow Question or Exclamation marks.Oh I have been doing that.

I have fixed all of them except Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus & Ethernet Controller.Did you install the chipset drivers first?-->LookHere

Yep, I already did that as well.

Install the audio drivers here, see below link.Download "Windows 2000, Windows XP/2003(32/64 bits) Driver only (ZIP file)"
When you get to the site you must check I accept the above wait, then choose
next.

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=falseokay great, I downloaded the Realtek driver and then downloaded the Sygmatel driver from Dell Support.
I have audio now and it goes up and down...
but on screen the volume is just green lines.

and i tested the sound with the directx diagnostic tool and the test was successful but said "your sound card does not support hardware buffering. sounds will only play back form software buffers."

Is there a way to fix/change/get rid of these things?
You are probably using the wrong drivers...Dell's like only Dell drivers.
Visit Dell's site and enter your Service Tag # from the back of the MACHINE and it will list ALL your drivers...Quote from: infekktion on October 06, 2008, 05:49:18 AM

patio is correct but, I would like to know did you uninstall all instances
on your computer of sound drivers before you tried the driver at the link I recommended?um, no I didn't uninstall anything.

Under sound, video and game controllers, there is

-Audio Codecs
-Legacy Audio Drivers
-Legacy Video Capture Devices
-Logitech Mic (notebook)
-Media Control Devices
-SIGMATEL HIGH DEFININTION CODEC (this is the download that was on Dell Support for my service tag)
-Video Codecs

Under Add/Remove Programs there is
-High Definition Audio Driver Package - KB835221
-High Definition Audio Driver Package - KB888111
RealTek
Sigmatel Audio

Cd's play FINE and everything so that's not a problem.

Wow...I've heard horror stories about installing SP3 on Media Center Edition 2005...usually breaking .NET 1.0 and Media Center itself, among other things...

[quoteI have no sound card. when it finds an audio driver, it tells me to put my Service Pack 3 cd and that Ksuser.dll is needed.
Do you still have the SP3 install .exe file (WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe)? If not, then:

1) download it from Microsoft's website, but DO NOT install it!
2) download and install 7-zip (http://www.7-zip.org)
3) Right-click on the SP3 file you downloaded. Left-click "7-zip," then "Extract to WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU".
4) Go back to Device Manager and try to install your sound driver again. If you get the message asking for Ksuser.dll, then point to the directory that you extracted via 7-zip.

Have you tried booting from a bootable CD of some kind (Memtest, the Vista install DVD, WinPE, BartPE, etc.)? If it boots from the bootable CD, then it's something corrupt in the OS. If not, then...

That's what I mean... it isn't windows or anything accessing the drive, it's the BIOS detecting and attempting to boot to the drive.

If it fails, it doesn't even try to move on to the greener pastures of the hard disk. Instead, it stops dead, leaving this epitaph: "No-system disk or disk error: replace and strike any key when ready"

However, sometimes, a disk might have been used as bootable disk with a NT boot sector. if the NTLDR file is removed (via a del *.*, etc) then the nt boot preloader starts, but fails to find NTLDR and halts with this memoir: "NTLDR missing. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to Restart."

What I mean though it these were brand new floppies, we all had to buy our own you see.

So its kind of like a boot between the floppy and HDD...because otherwise the BIOS wouldn;t know to look on the floppy for NTLDR

the no system disk one is true though, it does just stop dead, though I have seen BIOSes go further with a floppy in.

mysterious..google might help us

It is not missing. It is where it always was. In is still in its house. on the same street. Same Town. The Taxi went to the wrong town.Looked on the wrong street, parked in from of the wrong house. NTLDR does not live there. Don't blame NTLDR because the Dispatch gave out the wrong town to the taxi.

It EITHER boots from the floppy, or it doesn't, and boots to the HD.

there is no "half boot" situation.

It's likely simply an artifact of any preformatting that occured with the floppies.

it is odd though, why would the computer want NTLDR when the floppy has never come into contact with it?

EMERGENCY for "in case you are using floppy for boot disk and cannot reformat it"??

Because I have seen plenty of forums that say to...

WAIT! I think I have it!

Just before XP loads, it searches for NTLDR, right? Perhaps it searches for a copy on the floppy before the HDD version? No. It doesn't. It just means the floppy has a NT boot sector.Quote

Solve : Graphic card and internet doesn't work - Driver or hardware defect??

Answer»

A couple of days ago, i helped a friend localize a computer problem, which unfortunately resulted in, that my own computer doesn't work now.
We were testing whether it was her Graphics card or the monitor that was defect, and we did this by disconnecting my own monitor and then connecting hers. This was done while the power was turned on.
When we CONNECTED my monitor again, (Samsung Syncmaster 206BW), it SWITCHED between digital and analog mode a couple of times, and then went to sleep mode. The monitor is normally connected to a Geforce 8800GT, so i wondered why the monitor did not work this time.
I Put the monitor cable in the motherboard (Asus M2A-VM) onboard graphics plug, and restarted the PC.
Then i checked the BIOS, where it said that the main display adapter was the PCI-E16X port, although the monitor was plugged into the motherboard.
I then saved the settings and logged on the PC to see if it was a missing graphics driver

I went online to check for other drivers a couple of times, and all of a sudden my internet didn't work.
I have had the same problems with the graphics card the first time i installed it, but i quickly fixed it. I have tried to fix the WAY way i did last time, but i doesn't work. I do not know what to do now.
Quote

and we did this by disconnecting my own monitor and then connecting hers. This was done while the power was turned on.

You may very well have fried that monitor and or vid card...i'm using the monitot right now, connected to a laptop.
The graphics cards cooler starts when i turn the pc on, so i do not think that any of the hardware has been fried.Quote

Quote
The graphics cards cooler starts
It doesn't mean much.I've never heard of any cases where unplugging a monitor while powered on actually fries a video card or monitor. Otherwise, every KVM switch in the world would be frying monitors and video cards everywhere...

Now if he accidentally yanked the video card out of the PCI-e slot while it was powered on, then there might be a problem...

In this case, we're dealing with two separate problems: Internet and the video card.

First things first:

1) Turn off your computer!
2) Pull the power cord from the back of the power supply (just to be on the safe SIDE)
3) Remove the video card and reseat it in the PCI-e slot.
4) Plug power cord back in
5) Turn computer back on (with monitor plugged into onboard video)
6) Use a friend's computer to download the drivers and save it to a flash drive.
7) Install drivers from flash drive. When asked to RESTART, say No.
Start -> Shut Down -> Shut Down in XP or Start Orb -> right arrow -> Shut Down in Vista. (not because of zapping hazard, but so the BIOS doesn't get corn-fused)
9) Plug monitor into video card.
10) Turn on computer. If you have picture, then you're done. If not, then keep going:
11) Turn off computer. Plug monitor back into motherboard.
12) Turn on computer.
13) Right-click on Desktop, left-click Properties (XP) or Personalize (Vista)
14) Go to the Settings tab (XP) or go to Display Settings (Vista).
15) You should now see numbers representing monitors. You may see three of them (one for onboard, two for card). Click on #2 and make that your main monitor.
16) Click Apply.
17) Unplug monitor from onboard and plug into card (this won't hurt anything unless you accidentally yank the card out of the slot).
18) Go into Device Manager and disable the onboard adapter.
19) Restart your computer.
20)
21) Hopefully Profit!Quote

Solve : Serious Mistake Trying To Install Driver Update..Can It Be Rescued??

Answer»

Greetings Hopers,
I am very new to this PC world, and am very inexperienced in dealing with these issues, but I'm hoping someone may be able to assist me with my dilemma.
I have a PackardBell Imedia PC RUNNING XP, and i've been attempting to install an update to my Nvidia GeForce4 MX440 driver.
I found the download, then placed this .exe into my download folder.
I then went to ADD/REMOVE and deleted the existing Nvidia Driver.
I was prompted to restart my computer for the remove to take effect.
This was clearly a howling boo-boo. Upon rebooting, (I did this in Safe Mode), the screen remains blank. Clearly this is because there is no driver to display the GRAPHICS. HOWEVER, I know what the path is to the exe file (in the download folder). Is there any way that I can open this exe while having no visible screen? Am I in serious doo-doo land?
I took a look at the menu option that said "safe mode with command", but it ASKED for an administrator password. This PC is over 5 years old, and whatever password (if any) was chosen at that time, is now lost to me. Certainly the obvious ones i tried failed gloriously.
So, no password, but I still would like to know if i can activate that exe without my graphics driver?
I apologise in advance if this problem seems hopelessly amatuerish. I'm keen to learn, but was just not aware that there was "an order" in which to remove the original driver to replace with the newer update.

Your advice is greatfully appreciated,
Many thanks,
MWP. When prompted for the password try just hittin Enter and see if it let's you in...I tried hitting ENTER at the password, and it still resorted to "failed after 3 attempts..push ENTER to reboot".

I should mention that I am going into the safe mode with command prompt and then into the Recovery Console. I assume the recovery console is where i want to be based in order to enter the path file to the relevant exe?Do you have onboard graphics and a add on sound card?

But how do I unistall. And also if tis an onboard video card and I cant remove it, how will my computer detece the 8400?You don't have to uninstall any drivers.

Once you put the 8400 into the computer, your computer will detect it.

Solve : Permanently remove Realtec RTL8139 Ethernet driver?

Answer»

I loaded this driver by mistake and now I can't get rid of it. I tried deleting it, removing it but good Ole' Windows finds it at startup and replants it. I then have to go into Device Manager and disable it so my real network card can function. Realtec is not physically present and my network card is a Linksys NC100. According to Reverend Google, QUITE a few other folks are having similar PROBLEMS. I would appreciate a fix that will wipe out all of Realtec, including an informational plug at startup time.
You might have to regedit and remove this pointer for that NIC device from registry.

Have you tried disabiling the network adapter.
Removing the Realtek driver.
Reboot system with network adapter disabled, then enable the adapter.
Then point the driver for the NIC to the correct driver.
Then reboot the system to see if it will no longer associate with Realtek driver?I have disabled the Realtec adapter and rebooted with no ERROR messages except the disabled INDICATOR in Device Manager and the Realtec informational message at boot time.
I have removed the driver but Windows reinstalls it at reboot time.
I do not have experience in the USE of regedit and suspect I will have trouble finding the right entries.
I appreciate your help thus far. If you can provide more detailed help on moving the pointer in the registry, I would certainly appreciate it.

Solve : Installing CD-ROM drivers on DOS.?

Answer»

Hello,
I have problem with I can't find any solution. When I try load on DOS cd rom drivers (i try many OAK's, GS, start disk from Win98 CD with cd-rom support on DOS) i have this error:
"No devices found, aborted installation"
and later of course MSCDEX.EXE echo error no device or sth like that. I check inside PC my cables isnt crash or etc, device working but i can't load on DOS drivers to use it on DOS. Week ago i bought new Gigabyte motherboard GA-MA790X-DS4. On my old motherboard (i dont remember NAME but socket 939) it works good and on older mainboards too like AM2, 939 and older... but with my new AM2+ it doesnt working. I try check BIOS Setup but i not find anythink to fix this problem.

My config.sys file:
device=DISPLAY.SYS con=(ega,,1)
device=MOUSE.SYS

dos=high,umb

and autoexec.bat:

I hope that you help me with this problem or explain why i doesnt working on new motherboard or new type motherboards AM2+... and can I start anyway cdrom on DOS because it looks for my funny that I can install from bootable CD Win VISTA/XP but CANT install drivers for cdrom on DOS = i cannot "TRY" install older Win98/ME.
THANKS for reply1) When you say DOS do you actually have DOS installed on this machine ? ? if so what version ? ?
2) There are basic errors in both the config and autoexec files.
3) There is no driver actually installed and it won't run simply on mscdexec.
4) What method did you try with the OakRom drivers because i don't see them.
5)What else is on this hard drive and what is it you are trying to accomplish ? ?1) I am running DOS from Bootable CD/Floppy so when I type VER at DOS prompt it wrote me: Windows Millenium [Version 4.90.3000] (I've made this bootable CD from WinME start disk...) I dont know how to check if I have installed DOS but I dont NEED it installed becasue I am running from CD. Yes?

2) I dont paste full my AEXEC file only that parts with cdrom drivers loading but I dont understand where are this basic errors because some CD with some files AEXEC and CONFIG worked and working on another motherboards...

3) Yes i think that but why it won't install it?...

4) May i don't understand you in this point(sry for my english) but I tried that how its works from old Windows start disk(ME probably if I good remember but I'm not sure it coud be from WindXP start disk...)

5) I have installed WinVISTA on this hard drive on NTFS file system.
I have accomplished somethink many mounths ago but it doesnt work only on my new motherboard AM2+ Gigabyte's... I have never problem with my Bootable CD and it always running DOS with cdrom support on any PC...

I cant do it because any drivers won't install on DOS... and this problem I have only when I bought new mainboard.First you don't have DOS...you have the repair console from WinME...that CD would probably have to be re-created on your new hardware to work...
Second if you don't have DOS you cannot run DOS...what you have been running is simply the command prompt bootable utilities from ME.

My last question is still unclear....what exactly is it you need to do from (DOS) there may be other ways...Ok i try to re-create but i think that dont fix problem with my drivers installation... yep may I dont have but may i dont need becasue I want only cdrom support on this ME repair console.

Its all working on this hardware only dont want to load this drivers for cdrom, drivers for mouse etc and another programs working too. PM me your email and i send you my cd image.

Quote
My last question is still unclear....what exactly is it you need to do from (DOS) there may be other ways...
So please tell me any way to load from CD DOS-prompt/ME repair console with CD-ROM support... I wanna to run any program what is burn on this CD like Partition Tool or Norton Commander but I'm sure that it must be when I want to run it not automaticly from autoexec.bat (I have programmed my own program on Pascal to do it and it must read programs from this CD becasue 1.44mb is not much to put all in bootsector)DLoad the Ultimate Boot CD.
It will have every tool you need to set up a new drive including partitioning tools; file management utilities; RAM and HDD DIAGNOSTICS and more.
Since you are familiar with a command line enviornment you should have no problems however:

DISCLAIMER: The tools on this CD are indeed powerful and if used improperly may render a machine un-bootable.

There, i feel better.Hmm Ok I try it. It will be a solution for my problem if this CD will work... I tried to make somethink like that Ultimate CD and it was working but if this CD work on my machine i try base on this CD to develope my own:)
thanks for help ^^

edit: I've check this UBC latest version and it works on my pc but using FreeDOS but i try to extract only cdrom drivers becasue using another and try to join them with my CD... if it doesn't work I will need to re-create my CD based on FreeDOS and it will work but still is unclear for me why my drivers doesn't work...Now i'm totally confused...if the UBCD loads your CD drive is working. You don't need to install drivers at that point.
Just use the utilities on the UBCD to do whatever it is you are trying to do which i'll admit i still don't know what it is nor understand it...Yep I don't need now but i want and at first want to know why it doesn't working so i will try to find answer... may all future motherboards on AM2+ socket have this problem or only 790X chipset(tommorow I am going to buy with my friend new motherboard for him on AM2+ but with chipset FX so i check it probably)... and at secound I like to create somethink my own so I will extract only cdrom drvs and on this UBC I can't run my pen drive so I will need to fix all this errors on my new BootableCD... This UBC is very good but not 100% universal but I don't wanna offtop here:P I want make somethink easlier and more universal... so i hope that now you understand. Is your CD drive SATA? If so, then the ATAPI drivers included with 98/Me startup disk won't work.

Earlier UBCDs also had problems with SATA CD/DVD drives.

Another option you may want to consider is BartPE or WinPE.Is not SATA, this on new UBC working good but is hard to extract only them ElTorito or smth like that... I tried to extract but is very hidden on many .bat files so I can take long time. I can't find another drivers on internet like this on UBC.Is there a reason why you absolutely need a DOS environment? If not, then use BartPE or WinPE (for the latter, drivers are FAR LESS of a pain in the neck)Is not important reason but I just want have it possible or if it's impossible just know why... I can't belive that on GB's AM2 it working all but on GB's AM2+ not. May my mb is crashed but i can't belive it before I find someone who have my motherboard and it working all.

Solve : user mode Vs kernal mode?

Answer»

hi friends,
would any one please give me the proper insight in these two modes. How user mode and kernel mode drivers works?
please explain me in simple language along with examples.

actually I have googled for it but didn't find any proper match of my need. and hence I thought you people would help me understanding these things.

the drivers LIKE...Realtek...etc are user mode drivers or Kernel mode?
please make me understand giving examples that we use in our systems

thanks in advance"KERNEL-MODE

The kernel-mode programs RUN in the background, making sure everything RUNS smoothly - things like printer drivers, DISPLAY drivers, drivers that interface with the monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. These programs all run in such a way that you don't notice them.

When the computer boots up, Windows calls the KERNEL, the main kernel-mode program that allows all the other programs to run, even the user-mode programs.

USER-MODE

These are the programs that you run when you want specific programs - e.g., MS Paint, MS Word, and Calculator. These are HEAVILY restricted, as to not crash the system. Windows uses memory-protection services offered by the processor to prevent malicious programs from interfering with the rest of the system and corrupting it."

taken from http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Windows_Programming/User_Mode_vs_Kernel_Mode

by the way what exactly did you google as this was the first thing that came up for me.

FBany example of user mode driver?

are these two type(user and kernel) come in action at same time?

suppose, any application is being started, then exactly at which point user mode drivers have there role?

iv tried googling and i got to the microsoft page that tells u about the bugcheck lists but i dont think mine was on it

do u need other information?

Sure. What kind of laptop is this for starters ? ?

I googled lappy but they don't seem to be a major manuf.

sorry

its a dell Latitude

do u need the model number?
you most likely do .. im not at home so i dont know i will be soon thoughIf it's a Dell and you have installed another driver you will have issues...
Most Dell machines like only Dell drivers.
If you travel to Dell's site and enter your SERVICE tag # from the machine they will list all your drivers.
Revert back to the original one and you should be good to go...

It is for a laptop. There are no PCMIA slots, I know I can USE a USB wireless card but I actually want to get the wireless card that is built in fixed. I did installed the correct driver. My laptop is a HP Pavilion dv2000 series Model No. is dv2315nr

This Link seems to suggest there is a PCMCIA slot...Yeah I see what you mean, it's where the Media Center Remote is. I didn't think you could put anything in there by the way it is angled but I guess they do make stuff for it. But I really want to get the one that is built in fix. By the way, I appreciate you looking up the SPECS for the laptop I've been trying to find themI don't blame you one bit. It's there -- it should work!

I don't know enough about Vista. I wonder if doing a repair on Vista would do it?

You might contact tech support to see if this is a known problem for them. Perhaps they might suggest a fix.

What happens when you load the drivers? I mean, I know it still doesn't work, but does it indicate it's finding the device as it does the install?Actually no it doesn't configure the hardware that was something that struck my supprise but when I do it. It says configuring software and then installs the software. I've tried everything. Installing while the switch is to the left and to the right. Nothing new. I want to know what I did that one time that made the computer recognize it as a plug and play then I could work with that but I don't know how I did it. Do you know how much it might cost if I took it to a computer technican (I really don't want to send it to HP, because I don't trust ship and fix, also the laptop I have I am not the orginal owner of.No, I'm not advising sending in the laptop at this point. I wonder if their phone support might be of any help?I will talk to someone over the phone but more than likely it will be someone I can't understand and doesn't know what in the world I/they are talking about.Yes -- the ODDS of both of those are too high. It is my HOPE that you'll be pleasantly surprised by the latter.

You might care to do this when you have some extra time, so that you can escalate the problem if you're not getting answers.

My "stock" phrase is, "Thank you. You've been very helpful. May I speak to your manager?" (No one can say you said anything bad about anybody.)

I will refrain from making bad jokes about preparing yourself by visiting gas stations, convenience stores, and the local location of a certain donut/ice cream chain. Lol Ok, I understand, I'm going to contact them and I well repost with the "results" tommorrow

Solve : DVD region change problem?

Answer»

My dvd drive is stuck on region 1. I want to change it BACK to region 2. According to my dvd I have 1 change LEFT remaining to do this and yet it won't change. I have tried going through device manager but when I come to change it I get an error message that tells me to check that I have Administrator privileges and that there is region 2 media in the drive.

According to my user account I am logged in as an administrator (I have checked to see whether it is disabled but it's not) and I have put a region 2 dvd in the drive - neither seems to work. I have also checked the Administrator account and logged into my computer in safe mode on the Administrator account to see if that would work but it doesn't. Up until this point I have had no problems switching between regions.

Can anyone help?

I have and Acer Aspire 5600 LAPTOP which runs WINDOWS XP. ORIGINALLY bought in Canada but I now live in UK (hence region problems). My dvd driver is Phillips DVD-RAM SDVD8821 and I tend to play my dvds through CyberLink Power Dvd.Is your DVD drive playing region 1 dvd's with no problem?

You can try this:

Get Anydvd: http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html.

AnyDVD software removes the region protection from DVD movie disks in the background when you insert a DVD and AnyDVD detects it.

This means, your computer will read the DVD as if it's regionless and has no region restrictions.

This should allow you to playback DVD's of incorrect region codes even if your DVD player is stuck at one specific region code.

(This can get you to playback the region 2 DVD's you want to play, but it doesn't solve the problem of why your DVD drive is stuck at region 1 with 1 region change still available)Yep - it's reading region 1 dvds no problem. It's just the changing regions which is the issue.

Ideally I want to be able to change the region permanently but I will try the download you suggested in the meantime.

Thank you!

I used the drivers from the cd, didn't work, I downloaded the drivers off the internet, didn't work. Tried UNINSTALLING everything and REINSTALLING multiple times, didn't work.

What can I do?

Computer:

Windows XP
Intel (R) Core (TM) 2 PC
6320 @ 1.86 GHz
1.87 GHz, 2.00 GB RAM
I'm using BitDefender (free version)
I don't know what video/ sound cards are, other than it is NVIDEA for graphics.

Thanks a lot for any possible help, I really appreciate it, this thing is driving me nuts.

Try unplugging the webcam ant then install the drivers.Tried that 5 times, I followed the directions exactlyIf it's in a front USB port plug it into a rear one...
And unplug any unneccessary USB devices needed to boot properly. It's plugged into the rear USB

I don't think it's a problem with the camera, the drivers aren't workingI'm curious why you're convinced it isn't the camera...the only way to DETERMINE this would be to install it in another XP MACHINE which you may want to try.

do I have to buy a new drive and install it??
P.S: I noticed these symptoms increase especially when I connect my external HD.

What I tried to fix that problem...:
1.did a format
2 changed my "mother board" which cost me 398$

I REINSTALLED windows and the audio driver disappeared (realtek '97 audio) A common problem?

Ditto sony website.
Also tried realtek site the driver makes my pc crash and restart.
Please forgive my technical ineptitude, can anyone help please.
Thanks, harrybean.

Edit: I've also tried windows update. No luck!Hello everyone,
I've got it sorted now. I rechecked the Vaio sony site and I found the driver I needed.
Advice to anybody that may READ this. Double check what your original driver was before downloadling any drivers, I messed up big time by asuming it was REALTeK, I was wrong. I recommend USING computer manufacturer as first port of CALL, then try the motherboard makers site. DON'T USE THE FREE SCAN SCAMMERS, I tried one, it didn't detect I had no audio driver!!!! Solve : Thinkpad PM Device (driver)?

Answer»

Have a Thinkpad A21m, using windows XP, 512 MB of RAM. Was doing a driver update and found that the PM driver was OUTDATED. Download Lenovo PM driver file 7zku03ww.exe. which is V 1.51. RESTARTED the computer and it finds new hardware so do the automatically install command. GET the message after it starts installing that "There was a problem installing this software (Thinkpad PM device) System cannot find file specified. Rebooted and used the install from list or specific location which then I used the C:\Driver file and picked the download file WIN that has the driver. Got the same answer.

Is there a fix for this?

GuyIf you dont have important data you can use a system restore state to roll back maybe...or if you have important data you can back it up to a THUMB device or external drive or burn it to CD or DVD and then perform a roll back to a prior time when everything was happy before this driver update.

Quote

System cannot find file specified.

Also which file could it not find? If you want to battle this out with the computer and win without having to restore to a prvious point we will need the file name that it is looking for to assist further. This means you have installed the wrong driver...
If you can get to Device Manager right click the device and there should be an option to roll back to the previous driver,
Good Luck.patio is right. Thinkpads are little bit tricky about installing drivers.
First, you have to make SURE, you found correct download on Lenovo site.
Then, when you double click on downloaded file, it only extracts itself into C:\drivers\win directory.
When it extracts, you have to note to which folder in C:\drivers\win directory it expands.
Then, you go to that directory, and you look for "setup.exe" file (it may be more, than one). Look into all sub-folders, as well.
Double click on "setup.exe" to install the driver.
Restart.

What is PM driver, anyway?

Did you check the screen resolution, it MAY be this WAY because it is default to native resolution like 1920 x 1440... bring this number down to like 1024 x 768 or desired size and you might be all set.

Right-click on windows desktop background and go to Display Properties the select Settings, and select screen resolution by moving the tab from more to less etc.

its snowing here, i will have to get the sledge out for the lad Keep in mind we can't see the contents of the CD from here on account of the snow...diden't last long? melted

Would this way do the same, if you installed all of the software on the cd, and then set the adapter to be managed by windows.

Then go to services, disable the bt wireless manager (WAC)

Then go to MSCONFIG and "uncheck the belkin wireless adapter" so it doe's not restart the next time the computer boots up.

And hopefully the wireless connection is just managed by windowsAhhh...i see it now.

just looking on my computer, clicking on the belkin wireless utility icon , will bring up the interface to manage your connections (etc)

I will be doing this later for a freind, when i installed the belkin wireless adapter on my computer, i installed everything, but had a few problems, disableing the belkin wireless software.

once i had disabled the bt wireless software and got windows to manage the wireless connection
everything was fine.

I had "unchecked" the belkin wireless utility from the system configuration utility so it doe's not start up.

But do not want to go down that road again, i just want to be able to get the drivers of the cd,
but with it being someone else's computer, i do not want to be makeing mistakes

BT is the ISP ? ?
If so the other option is to go ahead and install they're crud and once up and running disable it using a nice little app called StartupCPL from Mike Lin...

Solve : Problems after system recovery and windows re-install please help!?

Answer»

I recently did a complete system recovery on my hard drive and re-installed windows xp, but now after the install when i put in a memory stick duo into my pc to LOOK at pics, my pc does not even respond or acknowledge that there is a memory card in the slot. Is there a driver for this, because I am having a very difficult time looking for it. COULD someone please PROVIDE advice or help with getting this matter resolved. Thanks in advanced!!Are all the drivers installed?

Have you gone to Windows Update to update this computer after the reinstall? My apologies for the delay, I have completely gone through all windows updates at this time and my memory card slot is stil not responding at all? What should I do?Does the card have a small micro-switch on it anywhere ? ?If your talking about my memory cards, yes they do?Then try the switch in another position...this is to prevent them from getting accidentally erased...I have tried that route already, they are in the unlock position, they still work on my labtop, but after the re-install and reformat on my PC it just does not respond at all when i put a memory card in the slot? What card reader is on the Desktop machine ? ?
Is it the CORRECT slot ? ?
Do any other type cards work in the desktop ? ? You may have to BORROW another one to test this.
If the card reader is on the front of the Desktop you may want to double-check the front panel leads are connected properly...refer to your MBoard manual for this...

I installed Ad Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Spyblaster, Windows Defender, and Zone Alarm in addition to the Verizon Security Suite that was currently running in order to find and delete some adware viruses. Spybot was successful and everything was restored to normal for a couple of days until I restarted and got a blue screen error "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" and stating that I should disable BIOS memory options. I assumed that I had too MANY virus scanning programs and firewalls installed so I was able to BOOT into safe mode as administrator and deleted all of the before mentioned programs except for Windows Defender and Verizon Security Suite which I planned to keep. At restart I received the same blue screen message so I went to the BIOS setup menu to check the memory options and my BIOS menu has extremely limited settings options (Phoenix Trusted Core) which frustrated me and I (stupidly) reset the default settings. Now I was unable to get PAST the black screen telling me that Windows failed to start normally. So I went to the XP recovery CD and tried recovery and now all I get is a blue screen saying hard drive not found.
This laptop was purchased "Vista ready" but with XP Pro installed by my request. Could the problem possibly be that XP setup is not recognizing the hard drive because I reset the settings to default and now the hard drive is recognizable by Vista but not by XP?
Sorry for such a long message but alot happened at once and I assumed the more INFO the better.
Thanks in advance!I believe I have narrowed it down to a Windows software problem. I disabled AHCI Configuration and Windows rebooted fine with all programs and documents still in place. And then after a few minutes, blue screen. The same error message as before: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and stating that I need to disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing. I believe that the bios is fine but that some software is messing everything up. I will do further investigation.I ran a SCAN with iobit and allowed it to fix a lot of problems with the registry, 200+ which involved MRU cache. After, I restarted and all is normal, no crashes, no "Windows has just recovered from error" message, Internet is restored. I have restarted quite a few times now and everything appears normal. I'm "thinking happy thoughts"!

Solve : Intel BIOS Update Does Not Update?

Answer»

I've got an Intel DP35DP Mobo. For some reason the last 4 BIOS updates have not actually been able to update. I use the conventional .EXE version that instructs user to simply 2X click the .exe, click Finish, AND DON'T TOUCH UNTIL UPDATE IS COMPLETE!

I'm currently on ver. 0413, that was released 3/6/08. That one updated fine because I remember doing it right after I finished building my system. I've tried installing the latest ver. 0507 twice that was just released 12/2/08 with no luck. When I click on the Finish button for it to execute the update, it shuts down XP, and I heard the drives and fans spin down BRIEFLY, but it never actually shuts down the machine, even though the OS is down. I waited maybe 20 min. both times, then I eventually turned the master power switch off for about 15 SEC., then reboot. It says it was successful, but both the Sys Info screen, and the actual BIOS say NOT. I even viewed their online tutorial video, and they did it exactly how I did. I even tried that in Safe Mode, after taking the battery out to see if maybe the CMOS had been corrupted. I've also tried the IB iFlash ver., but they only show you the Thumb drive procedure, (which I don't have) not the CD Bootable (which I've wasted 4 CD's trying to do), nor do they give very good INSTRUCTIONS on exactly how to do that. I use CDBurnerXP (LATEST ver.) which has it's own Bootable image file that I created a Boot CD, then expanded the iFlash files in a folder on my hdd, and burned them onto that CD. If that's not the right way, then Intel ought to be more clear and LESS presumptuous that everyone can read their minds. To top it off, Intel doesn't provide any kind of actual tech support ph. #.

I know they advise not updating unless there's a specific PROBLEM that the update might fix, but it's about 4 ver. old. However, there were some issues (I can't remember exactly right now) that I thought were at least pertinent.

It's not just me either. My best friend that has an Intel has had the same problem, and he's been building PC's since 1980.

Thanks for letting me vent,
GPLEAWhy are you constantly flashing your BIOS ? ?
This should be done only under extreme circumstances and is not meant to be a fix for Windows issues...
I'm suprised that machine even runs...Patio is right!
There is little need for doing a FLASH unless you know there is a problem.
Quote

not the CD Bootable (which I've wasted 4 CD's trying to do)
What does that mean? The last time I did a flash it was with a floppy. When did they start using a CD?

Im thinking, I likeUBuntu do you think if I install Ubuntu and change the WHOLE system it will work? Cuz honestly im fed up with these types of problems and I just want to change. I have heard Ubuntu ADN the like are better but not too sure. What you guys think?Quote

It is a belkin switch.
That's very clear......NOT.
What does it do?It is SUPPOSED to be used when you hvae two pc's and one monitor. so you can use the same monitor, keyboard, and mouse, you just click a button adn it switches between DESKTOPS. OK. It's called KVM switch. Now it's clear. Thank you

Solve : Driver Identification?

Answer»

A good friend of mine gave me his old webcam and said, "I don't have the drivers that came with it anymore, but if you can get it working, it's yours"

The only THING I know about it is that he bought it around November 2006ish and it's a logitech. I can't find the drivers that will work for it on the logitech site.

I tried going by the PICTURES on the logitech WEBSITE as to what resembles my cam closest but that didn't work.

I'm running WINDOWS XP Pro SP 3.If there is no label with model/serial NUMBER, it's gonna be easier to buy a new one for 20 bucks.

Solve : Hard drive dies during boot?

Answer»

the Hard drive on my HP pc cuts off before the system can boot up. I get the option of whether or not to start the computer in safe mode and once I get to the loading screen the hard drive begins to blink and beep and cuts off. I have tried DISCONNECTING everything from the back of the hard drive except the power CORD and the same thing happened. Any suggestions??Without knowing more details of your system only a general ANSWER can be given.
It would seem that you are sure the problem is with the drive.
Te most conservative thing to do at this point would be to get ANOTHER drive as a spare. It would not have to be a new drive, just one that works good and has enough space for your needs.
Then you would gently remove the old drive and replace it with the new one. Of course, you would have to install the Windows system onto the new drive. If all goes will, it would tend to approve that there was a problem with the drive.
Here is a link. Replacing a Hard Drive

Do you think this is related to the lack of sound when i try to play a music file ??Re-install your SiS MBoard drivers...
The Codec DVD error is not related.

I can easily load the pics to my computer. I have an adapter to slip the memory card into called a MICRO adapter to then insert it into my computer to transfer the pics. When I put the chip and the adapter into my computer, (gateway laptop XP) nothing happens. when I slip the chip and adapter into my desktop (dell, Vista) a BOX imedialtely appears to ask if I want to view pics. Why can't I view them on my laptop?probably becuase the laptop needs drivers is there any cd that came with the card reader?do you recieve any on-screen message when you insert the adapter into your XP machine (such as unrecognized USB device)

Solve : usb's not recognizing cam, printer, mouse...etc..?

Answer»

Hello all!
I am back again.. Hope I am posting in right place? My g/f got an emachine T2542 which was not working, well was working but windows wasn't working. first THING I did was put in a 500W coolmax psu in, due to I know psu's in emachines suck! so I reformatted and put windows xp pro on it, as she didn't get any recovery disc's with it! first off I could not get windows to install correctly until I took the additional ram out and reinstalled with just the factory 256mb ram in it.
Everything installed ok. I went to emachines website http://www.emachines.com/support/product_support.html?cat=Desktops&subcat=T%20Series&model=T2542 and got all the drivers from there for the machine that they had. Installed them then went to windows update and installed service pack 3 which they recommended to install. so I also installed avg antivirus and rebooted when it needed rebooted!
OK now I plug in the speakers and no sound? Tried installing the ac97 drivers it calls for several times and it never actually recognized my speakers were connected? so I went out and got a Creative sound card which installed and works perfectly. now I have sound. didn't know if that information was needed but just letting you know what I have done before.
Now the problem is any usb device I plug into the usb ports is not recognized as being there? all 6 ports do the same thing (Nothing) have tried several different sub device and do not get any hardware notice or new hardware added that needs drivers! I am at a miss here and have tried downloading different drivers from driverguide and going to Intel for updates etc.. seems anything I try, the usb ports are dead to recognizing a device. the light on the webcam I hook up comes on so know there is power.. also cannot get mouse to work on usb either so am using PS/2 port for mouse. Other than the usb's and inboard speaker port not working this is working great!
sorry so long winded but think more info is better for HELP. I am sending everest home summary report also.
Thanks for any input (advice) and sites or links for help, below is everest report.

PS. Notice on report it say's motherboard name is unknown? the name on the board say's Imperial_GV

Are there any "splats" in Device Manager (Red X, yellow !, yellow ?)no none at all..that is what has me miffed!!?
You can try this...
Right click ALL instances of roots and hubs in Device Manager and select un-install/remove...you will recieve a warning...ignore it.
Power down and plug in only the neccessary USB devices.
Upon re-start the USB roots and hubs will automatically re-installed.
Power up and down a few more times and then see if any extra devices work.
If this does not help try re-installing your MBoard drivers...they will be on the Driver CD that shipped with your MBoard...
If all else fails you are looking at adding a PCI/USB addon card which have up to 6 slots on them...Sorry took so long to reply.
thank you for the replies. I tried everthing you have mentioned, with no results in getting the motherboard usb's to work. Instead of racking my brains on it anymore, I just got a PCI/USB addon card, which patio suggested and everthing seems to be working FINE now.
Thanks again for the help and suggestions!
