Solve : on drive formatting?

Answer»

Hi, SINCE i am new to computers

i had a small doubt on disk FORMATTING.

what is the necissity to FORMAT disks?

Is it not sufficient for storing the data by deleting the current data?

what is internally happened?[TECHNICAL POINT OF VIEW]

please provide proper answer. You can only delete so much info/data through Windows or any other OS you are using.

If you delete and important system FILE, the OS more than likely wont boot up therefore you have all this extra data on your HD and can't do anything with it until you either replace it or remove it via formatting.

Formatting will delete ALL of the data on your HD so that you "start fresh."

I don't get what you mean by this SENTENCE???Lets say you wanted to get rid of everything on your 2GB portable flash drive. Instead of having to wait an incredibly long time, you can just format it which would get rid of everything in a few seconds.
If i'm not mistaken, formatting also gets rid of IMPURITIES or corrupted segments. One time that you would format is if your HD is infected beyond repair, and contains many holes. Format deletes EVERYTHING (including your OS), which means that you are essentially left with an empty shell. You will have to install your OS again.

CD-RW discs (writable discs) need to be blanked before USE. To blank them, most people just format them.Quote from: vamsi on June 15, 2007, 01:31:21 AM

Were these questions copied from a homework quiz?

a full format writes i beleive 0's to the drive and a quick format erases the table. meaning the information that you don't want anymore is still there but there is no way for the drive to see it.

The purpose of formatting is to get rid of unwanted information or to start fresh with an install of windows. Quote from: WillyW on June 15, 2007, 12:29:25 PM

Solve : sound driver problem?

Answer»

On my brothers computer, i am having problems with my sound driver. What happens is when i run lets say Windows media PLAYER and i click on play, i get this message: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another PROGRAM, or it may not be functioning properly." I do have a sound card installed and its drivers, but it doesnt work when i plug my speakers into it. I just get the same message. Also all my games will not work, for EXAMPLE my Call of Duty tells me this: "166 sound files are missing or in bad format". I have uninstalled all my sound drivers and deleted it all, and then reinstalled but it just doesnt work. The motherboard i have is a BIOSTAR U8668-D version 7.8. I even downloaded the CORRECT driver from the biostar website and it did not work. I do not know what to do, can anyone help? You stated you have a sound card installed ...then you stated you re-installed the drivers for the onboard sound...

This isn't working. More Info...ok, I have a sound card installed in my pci slot, with its drivers installed, my device manager tells me that it is working properly, i also have onboard sound and i reinstalled that by downloading the drivers off the internet. The computer still does not recognize my sound files from any source on my computer, did that answer your question? No.

You can only run one or the other on most machines...

Try re-seating the sound card and double-checking all your connections.

Also check all your settings in Sounds and Multimedia to make sure nothing is muted. And if you have an add on sound card you must disable the onboard sound in the BIOS.Sometimes you need to go to your control panel, then click on 'System'
then click on 'hardware',then click on 'Device Manager'

Now double click on'Sound video and game controllers'

Choose your onboard sound and right click on it.

Now go to 'Properties'click on 'Properties' at the bottom
you should see Device usage:

Choose Do not use this device(disable)

Now, you should not have a conflict with 2 sound devices
trying to run at the same time.well i disabled my onboard sound, and made sure my sound card was correctly inserted, but i still get errors when i try to play any kind of music or run a game that has sound files.
One of the errors, as i mentioned above, states:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly."

I do appreciate your help so far, and I am hopeful that eventually i can get this fixedDoes the software CD that came with the sound card have its own installation and setup routine?i just reinstalled windows, its ok now, thx for your help thoughQuote from: Brin on June 16, 2007, 12:18:40 PM

This probably was not neccessary but good to hear you're fixed up.

Solve : Since I installed Vista, I'm having problems installing any drivers..?

Answer»

That describes my main problem right now. Ever since I installed Vista over XP Media Center Edition, most things have been working fine except this.

I go to install drivers for let's say... my Lexmark printer (which is supported in Vista) or Nintendo WiFi USB Connector (not REALLY supported in Vista, but enough people have gotten it to work that I should be able to as well) or whatever. Many times the installation of a new driver will hang right in the middle. It'll bring up a prompt from Windows Security asking if it's OK to install this driver or some crap. Click yes. Sometimes it just freezes up there. In the case of my audio card before (which I finally got working somehow), it would just keep looping that question prompt over and over every 30 seconds or so.

In the case of the USB Connector, it actually installed OK, I set the compatibility to XP Service Pack 2, and it "runs".. until I try to connect to it through my Wii, then the program brings up a "Windows is closing this program, there's an error, blah blah" prompt.

I've actually been getting a lot of that in Vista as well. IE will shut down quite a bit for no reason, the Nintendo WiFi Connector does the same, etc.

But yeah. I have the appropriate driver files for (as an example) my Lexmark printer. I have the Vista file. But it won't finish installing correctly because it just hangs up near the middle. I tried installing them other ways (using Vista to find the Lexmark drivers and try to install them, automatically use what Vista thinks are the best drivers, etc. etc.). None of them work.

Should I reinstall Vista? Could this help?If you reinstall vista do a full reload not an upgrade. There may be ISSUES with the old xp drivers still being in the system. I have ALSO HEARD of problems running the WII networking but there is a bunch of workarounds I am sorry i don't remember them off of the top of my head. I can do some searching when i get home from work.If you have the Lexmark installation CD with Vista drivers, uninstall any drivers for Lexmark. Disconnect the printer cable. Disconnect the printer power. Shut down. Reconnect the printer cable and power, be sure the printer is turned on. Reboot. When windows DETECTS new hardware, cancel out. After boot up completes, insert the Lexmark CD and run the installation program.I do not have a Lexmark CD with Vista drivers. I do have an installation CD, but it's older (for XP). So I've tried multiple things.. installing using this CD (doesn't work), installing using the newest Vista drivers from the website (won't finish installing), etc.

This goes for nearly anything I've tried to install after I've installed Vista. Drivers have major problems. Hangs right in the middle of installation nearly all the time.

*censored*, I EVEN have a problem uninstalling older drivers for devices, because it hangs during uninstalling them as well. Vista does have a major problem with drivers. If it was me, I'd dump Vista in a heartbeat. What version of Vista is this is ? ?
RC1...RC2...
Or maybe an "ahem" version from the web ? ?I.. uhh.. have no clue what version of Vista it is (besides Home Premium). It's certainly not an ahem "web" version, I can tell you that much.A re-install may help but a few things to check first.

Are you getting hangs when doing any other tasks or just with driver installs/uninstalls ?

How was the machine prior to Vista..any of the same symptoms ? ?

How much RAM in this machine ? ?

Was MCE erased with the Vista install ? ?To anwer your questions:

Nope, no other noticeable hangs during other tasks.. none that I can think of right now, anyways.

Prior to Vista, I actually had a different problem.. the PC would run out of available memory quickly.. I would have like 6 tabs of IE (or Firefox) open and I'd get a popup about my memory being low.. this was even with the add-on disabled version of IE.. Vista took this problem away but gave me a new one, it seems..

There is 1 gig of RAM.

Not sure about MCE being erased.

Solve : OpenGL Initialization failure?

Answer»
Hello

I am having quite a nasty problem with my video drivers. It concerns the following game:
- Soldier Of Fortune 2

The game ran well in the past. I've played it a trillion times. But now, for some reason unknown to me, it chose to give me this error when I start the game:

"OpenGL Initialization Failure

OpenGL Initialization Failure. To play Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix, please verify that your card is OpenGL compliant. If it is, please update to the latest video drivers. See the readme.txt for more details."

followed by the following console output:
http://users.telenet.be/treval/txt/OpenGLerror.txt

----------------

I believe this is happening ever since I launched Xfire. I don't know if it's related to Xfire. On startup of Xfire, it 'searches for installed games'.

Also, lately when I change screen resolution, Windows says I have to reboot. Why is this? I've never had to reboot to simply change resolution. Might be my video drivers, I don't know.

I've had normal nVidia drivers for my card installed in the past. Then someone recommended the 'optimized drivers' from 3Dguru.com. So I did, I installed the optimized drivers.

Anyway, main thing is, every time I launch this game, I have to reinstall my optimized graphics drivers and reboot. This is really unpleasant, especially when you're in a clan and have deathmatches at certain times, like me.

I TRIED to download and install the latest nVidia drivers for my card, from the official nvidia website (www.nvidia.com), but no cigar. The game still gave me the same error.

However! (important)
When I reinstall the video drivers and reboot, the game runs fine for one or two times, but after the third time, blam, same error.

Someone told me that the game might be trying to find proper drivers, can't find them, overwrites my newer drivers, with its older drivers. Is that possible? Perhaps the games' error message is clearer.

Anyway I'm really stuck on this..

Any help is greatly appreciated.

p.s.: if anyone knows a link to a video DRIVER cleaning tool? (to clean my system of the remnants of previous video driver installs. Might help)

-------------
My specs:

Graphics card:
http://www.pointofview-online.com/d...?content_id=142

AMD Athlon XP 2400+
1 GB DDR RAM

Windows XP Professional SP2Your link to the video card doesn't work, and 3DGuru.com takes me to a non-video card related page.
There are driver cleaning tools, but it's fairly easy to DIY.
Follow this page of the guide here to uninstall your old drivers and install the new ones.
Ad go to Control Panel - Display - Settings - Advanced - choose "Apply the new display settings without restarting".
That should fix your other problem.
I hope this helps.http://www.guru3d.com/

My video card is
Point Of View nVidia GeForce 7300 GT

I'll check with the guides.Funny enough "Apply new settings without restarting" was already selected all along...OK, I read the site totally wrong, sorry.
Check the guide, it should help you out.
Let us know.

Odd.
Maybe if you select a different one, then apply it, then select it again, and apply it, it may help.
Or the new drivers may fix it.I've done and read the guide up to page 5 now. Do I really have to do and read all the rest? It's like 5-10 pages more I think.

I'm GOING to install DirectX now. And then, I'll reinstall my game.

Let's see if this WORKS.

Cheers

The game works now.
Let us hope it does not fail again.

And I found something interesting regarding to my problem.
It seems to be a very common problem.

OpenGL solutionI'm impressed a fix for Return to Castle Wolfenstien was able to fix you up.....whatever works right ?

Got the error again.

So yeah I went through the steps one by one.
And running my desktop at 16-bit before running the game solved the problem.

The in-game graphics are set to 32 bit though. ^^

Alright I'm finally relieved from this problem.Quote from: Treval on June 28, 2007, 11:21:11 AM

I was just asking you to read the page linked to, which talks about uninstalling and reinstalling drivers.

Solve : How do I uninstall extra audio drivers??

Answer»

After I reformatted my laptop, my sound stopped working. It would play the "beep" that a person usually gets when an ERROR occurs, but no other sound, such as music. I asked my brother to try and fix it, as he knows a lot more about computers than me. Unfortunately, he could not fix it, and ended up installing extra audio hardware. I do not want to ask him to try and uninstall the drivers because I am scared that he'll make it worse. Currently, my Sound, Video, and Game Controllers section of device manager looks like this.

When I clicked on the properties for the first (starting from the top) Audio Codecs, it looks like this.

The second Audio Codecs looks like this.

The first two Legacy Audio Drivers look like this.

The only thing different with the the second Legacy Audio Drivers is that instead of ROOT/MEDIA/0000, it is ROOT/MEDIA/0002 in the details section. And finally, the the third Legacy Audio Drivers looks like this.

Can anyone please help me with this? And if anyone is able to, can someone tell me how to fix my sound? Thanks in advance.

P.S. - I may be able to provide more information about my PROBLEM, but please be patient with me. I know almost nothing about computers so I may not understand what kind of information is needed. You can remove extra audio drivers by simply right-clicking on them in Device Manager and select "Remove".

The best thing for you to do would be to visit your laptop manufacturer's website for drivers as they pertain to your particular model.

Please keep us posted...Unfortunately, the only options I get when I right click are:

-Update Driver
-Scan For Hardware Changes
-PropertiesHave you gone to your manufacturer's website for an updated driver for your laptop? No, not yet. Will that make it possible for me to uninstall the drivers?Somewhere ALONG the line, when you di the recovery for your laptop...there may have been additional software installed that's responsible for the extra drivers.

Leaving those drivers will not harm anything. The trick is to install the correct drivers for the sound device installed on your laptop.

When you reformatted and installed the operating system, was it done from a recovery cd or just simply using a Windows CD?

If you were using recovery software from your manufacturer, the correct drivers, should have been installed. If not, and using the Windows operating system CD, the correct drivers may or may not be installed...either way, the correct drivers may not be installed.

Do me a favor...just let me know the make and model of your laptop and I will locate the correct sound driver for you.Thank you for your help. My laptop is an HP Pavilion dv2000.Go here:

http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Lookup?h_lang=en&h_cc=us&cc=us&h_page=hpcom&lang=en&h_client=S-A-R163-1&h_pagetype=s-002&h_query=Pavillion+dv2000&submit.x=8&submit.y=4

There are THREE different models for your laptop. Choose the correct one. Choose your operating system. Make sure you know whether or not your laptop uses a Pentium or AMD processor before choosing the correct audio driver. Follow the manufacturer's directions for downloading and installing the driver for your laptop.

Good luck! Let us know how it works out.Thank you so much! I have sound now! The extra drivers are kind of bothering me, but I can deal. I'm just so happy I finally have sound again! Thank you again!!!You're welcome, Theresa...

Don't worry about those extra drivers...

I was glad I could help...take care and come back soon.

Solve : All usb ports dont work?

Hello
I have a toshiba 5 months old and none of my usb ports work. I dont think they ever worked. When i plug my mouse in it works but if it sits for 20 seconds then i have to move it up and down and around to make it work again. IT freezes. Then when i plug my usb modem in the it says installing drivers. which it should i have my own. i cant make it install the right ones. then My mp4 player doesnt work it just says unrecognized. thanks
tell me what info you need
Open Device Manager, CLICK the plus sign to expand the section on USB components, right click on each one select Uninstall. In other words, remove all of them. Then, restart your computer and let Windows reinstall it's default USB drivers. Now, does your mouse work?

Is that computer under warranty? That didnt help it. weird. The warrant i believe is over with. It is german and i dont think it was had a GOOD warrant.Does Device Manager show yellow triangles with exclamation marks in them, indicating unknown devices or devices with problems?

Do you have a PS/2 mouse you can use with that laptop?

Has that delay when you connect your mouse always been there, since it was new?

What protections (firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware) do you use?

How much memory does that computer have? What processor speed?Well if i plug in my Mp3 player then it has ! marks. The mouse has a Ps/2 adapter. I shall go try. the laptop doesnt have a PORT so never mind. The mouse has always had the problem. when i plug my mouse in to that computer (the computer with the problem is my SISTERS) then it doesnt work the same way. So it is not the mouses problem. She has NO firewall or antivirus or antispyware programs. She is a FOOL. She has 512 ram i believe. celeron M 2.40 ghz i believe again.

Solve : Problem With Sapphire Driver?

Answer»

I have a SAPPHIRE HD 4830 hooked up to my Olevia 37in HD LCD through a DVI to HDMI connection. When I first installed Vista without the Vid Drivers the text look ok at 800x600 resolution, but movies don't look as crisp they should. When I installed the Vid cards latest drives from the website, the text looks bad but movies look good.

I don't understand why.

Here's the rest of my specs: Windows Vista Premium 64 bit, 4gb Ram, Gigabyte EP45-UD3R, Olevia TV http://www.olevia.com/en-us/Products/5Series/537HLCDHDTV.aspx#2Are you talking about how everything look on TV screen?
I have very same TV brand, and I spent two days trying to use it as a second monitor, but I wasn't able to do it. In my case, red color was missing.
The list of things I tried is too long to post it. I even replaced the TV next day.Yes I'm talking about how everything looks on the TV. With out the drivers the text is a (little blurry) but video is not crisp. With the drivers, video is crisp but text is blurry. I can see all the colors, but I don't want to have to choose between text or video looking good.Your monitor's native resolution is 1366 x 768 (16:9 ratio). If you're running at 800x600 (4:3 ratio), you're not running a widescreen resolution and just about anything will look BLURRED or distorted.

Try setting your desktop resolution to 1366 x 768, or the nearest 16:9 widescreen resolution. This should clear things up (PUN intended) i've tried EVERY resolution that is where the problem is. BUSTED

No worries. You never know where you'll really find your answer. The more places you ask the more likely you will find an answer. If they think it's a bad card and are willing to replace it free of charge, then go for it.Update- I got my new card today. it is a Geforce 9800 GTX and man is it HUGE. It is as wide as my motherboard!

Anways, after wiggling it in my case I started noticing a big improvement. It automatically set itself to the native resolution of my TV. Video looks great. I set the font DPI to 150% so I can read things from my couch. IThe text looks good, but I think I can make it look very good with the proper tweaking now.

For instance: any black font set against a white backround looks worse that other colors. And If I could find the right font to change windows boxes too, I know it will get better.

Does anyone have any suggestions of a good font out of the dispay list to use? I don't care for the default.

One other thing and my display will be perfect. Does anyone know how to make the toolbars thinner in Firefox?
With the increased DPI they are taking up HALF of the screen, but the web windo itself looks decent.

I am so glad I spent an extra $60 for this card.Making Firefox toolbar and tabs smaller: http://blog.kagesenshi.org/2007/01/howto-making-firefox-toolbar-and-tabs.htmlThanks Broni

Does anyone know of a better font or style to set windows to?

Solve : Firmware Updates?

Answer»

Hi guys this question is related to my "accused" CD/DVD burner the LG GSA 4176B, well I've gone to the site and downloaded a recent update. In the instruction it says that no background program even anti-virus and drive should be in the master. Can it be dangerous to just update it without the need to exchange the drive to be a master? My secondary IDE has my DVD ROM as the master and rewriter the slave. Besides if the case that everytime I update the firmware I must exchange it to be the master, tends to be tedious. Oh and I did not update the drive yet for safety. Thanks 8-) :-? Why are you flasihng the drive ? ?

Be specific.Well it might help too in resolving the error in the drive having a burn with bad areas. My drive has a DL12 firmware and the latest now DL13, maybe if I update the firmware I hope that burn outputs will no longer have a bad area (unreadable portion of the burn) just like when it was new. But can I FLASH the drive even on it's slave state as opposed to the instruction? Coz it's tedious to dismantle the box everytime it has a flash update well this applies to all I/O DEVICES that can be mounted and unmounted, but if only the drive has no burn errors I will not flash it as flashing is known to be dangerous if done wrong. If the MANUFACTURER says you should configure the drive as master when doing a firmware update, don't you think you'd better do it? I would agree it seems odd that that is necessary but I don't think I'd try to dispute the need to do it if the manufacturer says do it that way.

Besides, how often do you really need to update firmware for an optical drive? Many of them are probably never updated; it's rarely necessary. Yeah sir soybean very weird and I agree very tedious. But I'm trying all optons before blaming the drive itself like sir street1 says maybe a ribbon cable or an update but if all else fails then the drive is really at fault. Ok I'll update it as Master, I'm just worry because I can stop all program but my antivirus because even it is off it still show messages. I'am using Kaspersky(hope I can mention programs here) and even with it off and not on system try it engages the computer. How do I turn off all process in the background so that I can flash safely? Can I flash I/O like this drive in SafeMode? Thanks.I'm not familiar with Kaspersky but I'd think it can surely be disabled in the software. But, if you can't figure out how to do that, you could try killing it in Task Manager. Hit Ctrl/Alt/Del to open Task Manager, select it and then click on End Process. Another technique for disabling it would be to run msconfig (Start, Run, and enter msconfig in the Run box), select the Startup tab, find Kaspersky and uncheck the box NEXT it. Click Apply, and OK. This will stop Kaspersky from launching during startup. Of course, you should reverse this, once you have updated your firmware.

And, yes, you could update firmware in Safe Mode.Thank you sir soybean for the info and also the guys who chipped in you are all very helpfull thanks again. 8-) I'd just turn it in where you bought it and GET a new one, if that doesn't solve it, you can always update the firmware later on... Chances are that when you're getting errors while burning that the drive is defect rather than required to have its firmware updated.. But then again, I never flashed a CD/DVD-ROM Drive...

Solve : Can't disable Bluetooth Bus Enumerator?

Answer»

I am trying to install BT so that I can SYNC my phone to my laptop. I keep getting the following error: Bluetooth device not found. Please verify that the Bluetooth device is properly connected and turned on.

I have successfully paired my laptop with my phone but for some reason the computer is not able to access the DRIVER. I thought I would try to uninstall the driver and reinstall it but when I went into Device Manager the drop down menu that allows you to enable/disable devices was grayed out. When I right click on Bluetooth BUS Enumerator the Uninstall option is not in the menu. What should I do?

Relevant info:

Blue Soleil software and driver
Broadcom BT Bus Enumerator version 5.1.0.2700

on a Gateway CX200X Notebook
Check the Gateway Driver CD that shipped with the notebook....it should contain the Bluetooth drivers for that notebook.
If not visit Gateway's site and enter your info to locate the proper driver.Since I posted last, I downloaded the new driver. Same problem. I can pair the devices but I can't get the driver to override the XP driver so the hardware is not detected. It is also giving me an error each time when I insert the BT USB that there was a problem installing the hardware. I have tried uninstalling everything and installing first the BT driver from Gateway, then the software from Blue Soleil and finally the USB. Then I tried installing the software first, then the driver from Gateway and then the USB. I've tried different orders at least 5 times and I can't get any driver to override what XP wants to install. I was finally able to uninstall BT Enumerator. Interestingly, when I went into Device Manager under System I found this: Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator. It has the same symptoms that the Bluetooth Enumerator did EARLIER. There is no "uninstall" option. Also, in the Control Panel there are 5 icons that say Bluetooth Device (from the 5 most recent attempts at installation). Each of them is empty although it is obvious that SOMETHING is not being uninstalled each time.

Now what?

Tell us what phone this is...It is a T-Mobile Wing (HTC).

Solve : No sound for VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller?

Answer»

Hello. My friend's computer had a GRAPHICS problem of some kind and a person was called to fix it. He fixed the problem but now the computer has no sound. We have no idea percisely what this person did (probably reinstall the graphics CARDS for too much money, and break sound just for fun). Unfortunately it's not possible to find out what he did to the computer.

We've tried looking for and downloading drivers but with no success. The original drivers for the computer are LONG lost. I've included an Everest report of the computer. Thanks.

(Also why is .txt not an allowed attachment type.)Below is the only one I found, requires registration.

http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=130189Cheers. I'll get her to try it as soon as possible. The site SAYS it is for Win 2000 but she has only Windows ME. I'm not sure if this will cause a problem. Can you supply us with the make and model of the computer as well??

The sound driver you are looking for may be able to be found on the computer manufacturer's web site. It's ONBOARD sound...correct? As opposed to a sound card?Since it's an onboard sound card, try downloading the drivers from the mainboard manufactuer's webpage. Or try drivers directly from the AC'97 website. Or just put in a real soundcard and save yourself a lot of trouble. AC'97 junk..

Solve : Need driver for: Caleb UHC 144 floppy drive on XP Pro SP2?

Answer» HI,

These high PRECISION floppy drives are going in the $3 range with two 144MB disks... as most outdated stuff does, but besides playing special Caleb 144MB disks, they PLAY the standard 1.44MB disks also. It is an IDE drive, altho a 3 1/2 standard size and I would like to get it going. It shows up fine on the boot screen but without the driver, doesn't play. Any help appreciated. Thanks. With the wealth of knowledge on the machine in question, the OS and what happened prior to this it would be guesswork at best.Spelling the name correctly (it's UHD not UHC) would help too.

Sorry for the Typo...

Anybody think that there may be a driver for a similar IDE device that may get it to play? I am open to trying most anything... but I am not a driver writer...

Thanks again.XP should have the drivers and auto install.Sorry Street, no XP drivers show up. It DOES show up on the Post for the IDE drive chains as Caleb UHD 144 but nothing to drive it. Surely with so many of these sold and still for sale, there should be a driver around. Thanks for your reply. This company produced its so-called wonder drive in 1999 but it never really flew. It was dead long before XP came along, so there won't be any drivers

A quote I found on a GOOGLE Groups thread from 2002

Quote

This thing sucks. I'm having a LOT of trouble simply copying files to a
1.44mb floppy, I can't boot off it, and I can't even format the thing. I'm
running Windows XP. Are there drivers for it?

And the reply...

Quote

The Caleb never flew well . It was supposed to be "better than the LS120" ; but
who could tell.. if you couldn't buy it -- how could you try it!

The local CompUSA had the media for over two years but could never get drives.
I bought almost all their media for $.05 each on closeout ; it was worth that
for 3.5" jewel cases alone. The UHD-144 media is actually as good as archive
level standard floppies.. if used as a standard floppy.

Just consider it another piece of abandoned hardware .

Solve : DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL?

ust wondering if you could help with my bloody computer. A blue screen keeps appearing which SAYS Driver IRQL not less or EQUAL. It then says that a windows update might be needed and to make sure any new hardware or software is installed properly. I have not installed any new hardware however this PROBLEM has only occurred since I tried to install windows live messenger. I have completely removed anything to do with messenger with no LUCK in fixing the problem. I have then gone to the windows update site to see if any updates are needed but as soon as it starts to scan my comp the dreaded blue screen appears again.

After all this and losing the will to live I WENT into safe mode to restart from a previous date only to find that for some reason that it can not restart from all the dates that I chose.

Any ideas?

Solve : Computer froze during CDROM firmware update?

Answer»

I have a BTC 5216IB DVD combo drive on my computer. I was running a firmware update on the drive while copying something from my other DVD drive onto my HDD and my computer froze.

It froze in the MIDDLE of the firmware update and now will not detect the drive during startup, but instead stays frozen at "detecting IDE hardware" for a while. After a couple minutes it goes past this state (not detected the now defective drive) and goes to a screen that says "detecting raid array" or something (I do not have a RAID array or anything set up). I let it sit there for like 15 min and gave up on it.

I then tried restarting my computer with the defective drive unplugged. This lets windows start up right away as normal but of course then my drive isn't PLUGGED in.

Is there a way for me to salvage my drive or is it totally screwed? Could plugging the IDE cable in once Windows is loaded make it somehow possible to run the firmware update again?

ThanksP.S. I have windows XPI wouldn't recommend plugging or unplugging the IDE cable when the computer is on. That is a seriously bad idea. You shouldn't TOUCH anything inside the case with the computer on. Besides, I highly doubt it would do any good even if it wasn't bad idea.
IDE devices are detected and configured at boot TIME by the BIOS, Windows doesn't do that.

I'm afraid your drive is toast. The manufacturer can probably revive it so that's a possibility. But it will most likely cost you, messing up as firmware update isn't covered by the warranty.
I'm sorry you had to learn this the hard way, but a firmware update is not to be taken lightly and shouldn't be attempted at all without good reason.
And when you do a update firmware be sure the computer isn't doing anything else, especially something that requires communication on the IDE cable. Many manufacturers also recommend you disconnect anything that is connected to the same IDE cable as the device you're updating.

I wish I could give you better news but this is the reality. Hopefully you'll be more careful in the future.

Solve : TWAIN Drivers?

Would anyone know where I can get TWAIN drivers for a Dell Precision 420?

Any suggestions?

Thanks!Have you looked ?----->HereYes, I've DONE that, although I have win 2k pro, but I tried that. Basically what happens is the all-in-one center installs just fine, I click on "scan" and the computer and printer won't talk to one another.

Lexmark claims I need the TWAIN drivers, but at the moment nothing is working with it. If I can get the OLDER drivers installed I can at least printer & copy.

The printer claims to work with win 2000 so that shouldn't be the problem, but apparently the dell pc and the lexmark printer aren't speaking to one another.Quote

I did go to the dell website, but they don't have TWAIN drivers for the model I have on their website. One more thing to try...

Click OK.

Solve : Laptop Button Presario 1500?

I have a compaq presario 1500 laptop with XP home SP2 1gig ram.
Under the Touch Pad there is a round scroll button and it STOPPED working.
I went to compaq.com and microsoft.com but I'm obviously not getting to the right place for this problem.
Is there a KB fix for this or can you recommend the DOWNLOAD fix to get this button working again?
I have to move cursor to the right and grab the bar everytime I need to scroll down a page.
Please help me out.
Thanks!Have you tried to reinstall the drivers?

GoHere
Thanks for your time!
I went to device manager and I guess it would be under the mouse properties and drive to update and roll back the driver but that is not the problem.
I remember years ago someone sent me a link from here that gave me a PATCH of sorts. Something to do with the keyboard ps/2 thing. I just can't remember what it was. But when I went to the link and downloaded the patch the scroll button really worked fine. Not sure where to go from here.

Truth is I have another laptop that I just bought and it's already down. It's an ACER with Vista and I'll never ever buy one again. I was actually on the computer when I called ACER tech Support about a screen ISSUE. 10 minutes later the woman had my computer completely useless. I'm really having to take my anxiety meds to keep from freaking out. I wouldn't recommend ACER to anyone.

I take Tranxene..What do you take ?

I am presently downloading and reading
the manual......Let me see what it has to
say.

Do you have a small on/off button for
the scroll function?Alprazolam and it works well for me. But this scroll button issue is annoying. I just got back from Microsoft but have found anything about scroll button not working. I do want to get the word out about how I got screwed by ACER and save people from the nightmares.
If you can help me get this button working until I can get my other laptop back in force. This Compaq Presario 1500 is old and the USB ports don't work, the PCI slot is busted, so the only way I can get on line is to attach it to the ethernet line which defeats the purpose of having a laptop not to mention I hate having to be attached to a leash.
Thanks again for your time. I hope that someone can get me the patch I need.

Please post the info you get on the blue screen. (See the red boxes on the screen shot below.)
Have you tried the newest driver from Nvidia?

If your computer is rebooting automatically you can do the following to disable it.
START the computer in normal mode and let it crash and reboot.
Tap F8 reaptedly during the bootup. This should bring you to the "Windows Advanced Options Menu".
From this menu select "Disable automatic restart on system failure" and press enter.
Select XP as the operation system to start and hit enter.Sorry I have Vista 64 Ultima. As I stated before have tryed the lastest verison from their web site still the same. The blue screen cycle thru to FAST to read have tryed hitting pause/break will not stop the screen. Still no reply from Asus. posted to them on the 25th, bad service.
Thanks RolfThese steps should also work for Vista and will stop windows from rebooting once it hits the BSoD.

no that's all of the infomation that was on the screen. How are you able to change driver if Windows can't load?by going to last known good boot on the start-up screenAhh...
Hmm must say it sounds kind of strange that you're unable to install any drivers for that card. I'm kind with Asus on this one, it might simply be a defective card you've gotten.

The only other thing I can suggest is a clean reinstall of Vista to make sure the driver isn't conflicting with anything.Sent it back today, I will repost when I get the new one. Thanks Again RolfGood idea.

Solve : Video driver perhaps for PCI card not integrated and not working now?

Answer»

Hello,

Ok, so i have a slight problem with my video driver
My computer originally came with a secondary video CARD from the retailer, but it got a bad capacitor. I wasn't sure where to get a replacement, and i didn't want to buy a whole new video card when i don't really use it, so i just used the integrated card.

Whenever i install the video driver though it slows down my computer immensely, and it somehow loses display resolutions, including the one i use. So i just uninstall it since as i said i never run anything really that needs it. Recently i tried to install and play half life 2 though. Of course without a video driver it isn't working.
My computer is a shuttle http://eu.shuttle.com/archive/en/ss51g_faq.htm v.2.

Any ideas on what i should do?Since you do some gaming, a new video card would be the best solution.(So i sort of left this post for a while, but i'm back trying to fix it again)

Incase you check in again soy, yes, a new video card would be nice, but half life is the only game i've got on my computer and i've only even got it because a friend GAVE it to me.

I was wondering it it's possible that the driver for the video card at the shuttle website is for the pci video card and not the built in one.
(I feel like i may have brought this up before, so sorry if this is a repeat).
Is there any way to find out what video card the built in is??Quote from: Anythingwill on January 10, 2008, 03:40:39 PM

I see two versions of your motherboard listed on http://eu.shuttle.com/archive/en/ss51g_faq.htm , SS51G v1.0 and SS51G v2.0. Which do you have? Exactly what video-related files did you download from that site?Ah! Never saw that.

It's v2

Under the "Download files for SS51G v2.0" i download the "VGA Driver for SS51G v2.0 (33.3 MB)"I believe you also need to download and install the AGP driver. i'll try it, but i just looked that up and isn't the AGP for a plug in video card not the built in?It can still be on the AGP bus even though it is onboard. I had a Compaq 266 mhz PII once with the same setup. (That were the days) Ok, so i installed both but same problems as ALWAYS... gets rid of a bunch of screen resolutions including the one i use. It actually doesn't seem too much slower right now if at all, but that could change.

Also, i had just expected half life to work once this was installed, but it didn't, and i'm sure it's still because the video card isn't doing it's job.

Now that it's installed i've got a little more information to post.
In DEVICE manager under display adapters it says it's SiS 651. When i go to it's properties it says it's working properly (of course) even though it isn't. The driver date is 12/2/2002, and when i go to update driver it says it has the latest.

Seeing as it isn't slowing down my computer i'll leave it installed incase you want me to do anything with it. Any ideas?I only recently thought to try playing a dvd in my computer.
It did play, but it was slow, too slow to watch. If I tried to pause, it was basically impossible to get it playing again, and i'm not sure it had sound. It didn't get far enough into the dvd for me to find out.

Unfortunatly i'm not sure if it was any better or worse beforehand.
Any ideas?Does your Device Manager show any yellow triangles with exclamation marks?

Run dxdiag (Start, Run, and enter dxdiag), and run the tests for Display. Were they successful? How much video memory does dxdiag show you have? Is acceleration (under DirectX features) enabled there? How many types of acceleration does it show?

What type of regular maintenance to you do for spyware removal, disk cleanup, registry cleaning, hard drive defragmentation, etc.?Sorry, like my other topic i was waiting for an e-mail notification and didn't get one

Device Manager doesn't show any errors, triangles, or exclmation marks

"Hardware accelerated Direct3D 9+ is not available because the display driver does not support it. You may be able to get a newer driver from the hardware manufacturer.
DirectDraw test results: All tests were successful.
Direct3D 7 test results: All tests were successful."
"Approx. Total Memory: 32.0 MB"

For the most part i don't run all of these right after each other, it's just sort of random whenever i feel it's necessary. Anyways, i run AVG 7.5 Free Edition, AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, CCleaner, and the Standard Windows Disk Defragment

I am attempting to play Age Of Mythology.

A while ago I accidentally deleted all sound and video drivers from my computer while attempting to reformat. Have now reformatted successfully, and eventually figured out how to get sound again.

Tried to play AOM and it didn't WORK DUE to the video driver.

I used the Device manager and reinstalled the video driver, attempted to load AOM again and it got through the opening credits, loaded enough that i could choose my game, but then when actually loading shut down and came up with an error message saying it was due to an error and that when the computer retarted it would do the error report. Error report came back and said it was a problem with the video driver and directed me to http://www.sis.com/download/msoca/ to download the update.

At this point, I don't know what to choose. I've downloaded the 630/730 series, but when attempting to install it says 'please confirm that your device is installed properly. and you are advised to reboot your computer before installing the VGA driver'. I then downloaded the 300/305 series, same error msg came up. I downloaded the AGP driver and installed with no issue but now i'm stuck.

I've found one website that did a scan and offered a dowload of the missing update, then asked for my credit card details - I'd prefer to get a free download if possible, if not please let me know and I'll go buy it.

I used to be able to play this game without an issue - I don't know what I've done to the computer, if someone could help me that would be awesome.TryHere

Solve : CD/DVD-RW Driver isnt reading DVD-R's?

Answer»

I have a Compaq Presario notebook and I'm trying to burn some MP3's onto a DVD-R and my computer just wont read the disk's. I've tried Sony DVD-R's and a Nexxtech DVD-R, so it's not the disk's. I'm THINKING I just need to update the drive but I have no idea how to do that, so some help would be amazing.

The drive is a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2512
It's standard.
The status says it's working properly.
Driver Date: 7/1/2001
Driver Version: 5.1.2535.0

I'm PROBABLY GIVING un-needed info but I don't know what you might need.

Just tell me what I gotta do. Try your drive in ANOTHER computer.Disregard my previous post...I wasn't reading carefully enough.

Solve : MSI P965 Platinum and DVD-R Drive?

Answer»

Well, to start...I'm a 2nd quarter student at a local college. I was assigned to install XP on a machine, but there's a few problems.

1) The media the teacher gave us is not bootable.
2) I'm using a crappy motherboard that doesn't recognize my IDE DVD drive.
It's an MSI P965 Platinum.
3) I got the drivers for the drive, but it STILL isn't working.
4) My teacher said to go to the MSI website and download their boot disk for DOS/98, but I couldn't find the boot disk.

I guess the question is, where's the Windows' boot disk for my motherboard?Bump. Any help within the next 8 hours would be greatly appreciated.Lets wait for more experties on this matter.
All i know is that you can boot from a cd since yours is not being recognised.

Good luckIs there a floppy drive on this machine ? ?
If so DLoad the WinME boot disk from bootdisk.com and create a bootable floppy to start the machine.
Grab the one with CDRom support and you should then have access to your DVD drive.Sorry, guess I should have mentioned the floppy bit too.

I'm using a Win98 boot disk to load the machine. The floppy has the drivers I found on the manufacturer's website, but it still isn't allowing me to view my CD contents. Once I'm ABLE to pull files from the CD, I'm good to go.

My problem is simple: my DVD-ROM drive is IDE, and my motherboard only recognizes SATA.Quote from: Alaster on February 07, 2008, 10:10:56 AM

My problem is simple: my DVD-ROM drive is IDE, and my motherboard only recognizes SATA.

If that were true, then you've answered your question - you've said that your components are incompatible. Therefore what you want to do would be impossible with just those components. You'd have to add an interface card.

Fortunately for you, I think that is incorrect.
Is this:
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130055
and
http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=P965_Platinum&class=mb
your motherboard?

If so, on the newegg page, see where it says:
"Storage Devices
PATA 1 x ATA100 2 DEV. Max"
That is saying that board supports two IDE drives on one cable.

Also see:
On-Board IDE

"One Ultra DMA 66/100/133 IDE controller integrated in JMicron JMB361
• Supports PIO, Bus Master operation modes
• Can connect up to 2 Ultra ATA 133 drives "

on the MSI page. It says the same, with more detail.

So, if that is your mb, then it will handle IDE drives.

Instead, do what patio suggested.
There are a ton of contradictions in your posts...
If the machine boots with a Win98 CD then the MBoard recognises the drive so that's not the issue:
Then you say the floppy took a dump YET you were able to boot from it:

I personally don't think this is a school project at all with all the conflicting info given...rather it sounds like you're trying to get a botched copy of an OS to install...

If i'm incorrect here have your teacher e-mail me with what the assignment actually is.Quote from: patio on February 07, 2008, 02:32:56 PM

Where did I ever say I used a Win98 CD?

Anyways, I figured out the issue. I had to disable ACPI in BIOS.

Does the drive show in Device Manager without any errors?

Yes, if not there could be a Hardwear malfunction, or a cable could be faulty or disconnected, however i would caution you against opening it up, best to ask the GUY whats wrong if he "fixed everything"

Have you tried 'Download Guided Help' ?It's a little 127kb program
you download and run.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060Yeah i tried the guided help... Yes its in device MANAGEMENT or whatever...says no errors and its working properly but its notTry one of these:
1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
or...
2. http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip
or...
3. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.Did all of them. Still not working...if it helps, the only drives that show up in my computer are G,H,C, and DI guess, you're left with patio's advice.

Solve : Need new hard drive for HP Laptop?

Answer» HI, I'm new to this forum and really hope I can find some help. My HP Pavilion dv4230US Notebook PC which I've had for 2 YEARS just stopped working with a blue screen and error messages. Took it back to Circuit City and paid to have them diagnose the problem. Was told I need a new hard drive and it was suggested to purchase on the internet because it would be cheaper. Have been looking for a week and seem to be lost. Even went to HP site and the part is no longer orderable. Therefore, I have found a few but nothing that is exactly the same. What I have in there is "Seagate 60GB Ultra ATA/100 EIDE hard drive - 4200 RPM, 2.5 in width, 9.5mm ht." What I've found is "Western Digital Scorpio WD1200BEVE 120GB 5400 RPM ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive - OEM " Would this be compatable? Can someone please tell me exactly what needs to match besides the 2.5" size?
THANK you for your help.Quote
Can someone please tell me exactly what needs to match besides the 2.5" size?
2.5 inch and the drive type is ATA/EIDE, not SATA. So, any 2.5 inch ATA should work. The Western Digital drive you mentioned should be fine. It's a faster drive than your old ONE (5400 rpm vs. 4200 rpm). Thank you very much for your response. I really appreciate it.Just double check the manuf. site to see if that machine will recognise a 120G HDD
