Solve : Bad BIOS Flash?

Answer»

So I have a Dell Studio 1535 (model number PP33L) that I ACCIDENTALLY flashed with the 1555's BIOS.    Now I'm stuck on an error screen that doesn't even go into BIOS.  Is there a way I can save this laptop short of replacing the mobo?  I don't think my mobo has a removable BIOS chip as far as I can tell and I've searched the internet without luck of fixing the BIOS.

...Is there a way I can save this laptop short of replacing the mobo?...
No.There are repair shops that could unsolder the BIOS chip and replace it with a new one, and there are in-place flashers with kind of claws that fit over the chip, but the fee may be in the same league as a new mobo. For what it's worth, used complete 1535s go for about $200 or less right now. So think about if it is worth spending that money on resurrecting what was a "good midrange laptop" (a review) 5 years ago. Also, anyone thinking about flashing their BIOS, make *censored* sure (a) you truly do need to do it to fix an actual existing problem (B) you use the right image. Better still pay a repair shop to do it, that way it's their problem not yours.
How does one accidentaly flash the BIOS ? ?Like Salmon Trout  said, The cost of replacing the chip is about the price of the motherboard. However, the old motherboard has some value as a source of placement parts.

He deliberately flashed the BIOS; he "accidentally" used an image file for a different Dell model. As to why anybody would want to flash a laptop BIOS anyhow, there are a number of possible reasons ranging from unlocking to trying to get the thing to work properly. I have read on forums that the Studio 1535 was known to be a bit flaky, especially when first released, and indeed Dell released 4 "recommended"  updates in less than 2 months shortly after releasing the model. There were a number of unofficial "modded" BIOSes around too.

A02 June 26, 2008 Improve Audio quality.
A03 July 7, 2008 1. The Wireless Switch setting can be saved in this version 2. Support the CPUs, T1500, T2410 and T5750.
A05 July 31, 2008 Fixed CD-Eject abnormally in Vista64 with 4G RAM.
A06 August 12, 2008 1. Added enhancement for Wifi catcher function. 2. Added enhancement for Embedded controller.

Yeah I've been debating to just stick it on ebay to sell as it is.  Can't decide if I want to go through the trouble of tearing it apart and selling it piece by piece or just as a whole.

I was trying to update the BIOS SINCE I was having hardware issues with the HD.  It actually had a weird version of BIOS on it, X04 if I remember correctly before I updated to the wrong one.  Can't seem to evoke any safety BIOS feature like the Crisis Recovery for Phoenix.  So I'm a little at lost what to do with the blasted thing. This is ONLY  a reference. NOT recommend.

Yes, there are people who  who fix the BIOS the hard way. Fort them it is a hobby.
For more, search keywords fix bad bios and gets lots of free advice, moist of it not very helpful to the OP.

But I like the idea of selling it on eBay and buying a good one.How much do you think a bricked 2008 model laptop with a flaky reputation will go for on eBay? People in my town give stuff like this AWAY, if they can find anyone to take it.

Solve : Nvidia 660m driver not working?

Answer»

so here is my problem

I have a nvidia geforce 660m graphics card but no DRIVER or it apparently. I try to have windows search for a driver and is says it has found one but tries to install it and fails. I found the driver myself online (http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/63462) and try to install that. The install fails. What is wrong and how do I fix it? I can see that there is no display adapters section under the device manager as I see in peoples YOUTUBE videos, but I do see the "unknown" one which I assume is the device. I personally don't even understand how my display still works if I have no driver and no other graphics cards.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]I was wondering if I should risk hitting uninstall on the unknown device which I think is my gpu, I just don't want to have my screen go blank an get screwed over cause then I really wouldn't know what to do.Core i7 supports integrated GPU, i.e. it's part of the CPU.  You might need to turn it off in BIOS.Uninstalling the display driver won't make your screen go blank, but it also won't help as the driver isn't installed right now.  Windows supplies a basic driver to GIVE you a display, which is why you can see your screen at the minute.
Who's the manufacturer of your laptop?  Try the display drivers from their support site, occasionally the proper Nvidia drivers won't install on some laptops and you'll need to use the manufacturer's one even if it's outdated.
At the risk of sounding stupid, are you positive you have a 660M?  On my gf's laptop, which has the Intel onboard and an Nvidia card, two display adapters are shown.  The Nvidia adapter stays powered down until needed (Nvidia Optimus is the name of the technology used) but is still shown in Device Manager along with the Intel, which can't be disabled.  So, on hers there were two unknown devices until I installed the Intel and Nvidia display drivers.  Yours only shows one, which I find a little odd.Alright then, I was not aware that my cpu could be used for gpu, so that explains that. And yes, I am sure that I have a 660M right now, I got this computer very recently and that was one of the things I made sure I had in it. Also, this is an ASUS G75. I will check with ASUS to see if they have their own drivers. Thankyou for the insight.Alright, I did find a section on the ASUS website for drivers and what not for different makes and models, yet I entered the pertinent details, downloaded the file and it started that install but failed same as before, they had 2 different drivers to choose from and I attempted both yet was met with the same result. Any other ideas? It is kinda a bummer to have a graphics card that just takes up space.I would say the graphics card is defective.I do not see how it would have become defective, it was working perfectly fine when I bought the computer, and only started experiencing problems when I attempted to install a Nvidia product called CUDA for the purposes of GPU computing, but that did not work as intended and really messed my stuff up in ways I cannot even comprehend.I would be inclined to give this a try, to see if there are some corrupted files left over from a previous driver install.  Check all three boxes and choose the middle left option, then try installing the drivers after rebooting.  LET us know how you go, hope it helps Quote from: Gamegene9060 on September 05, 2013, 09:14:55 PM

You only thought this to be relevant, now?  Would have been nice if you had mentioned this in the original post.  Do as Calum suggests.CUDA is the source of your issues...Best of Luck with this.

Solve : Display driver stops responding for a few seconds, then comes back?

Answer»

This only happens while in a browser.  Screen goes TOTAL black, then comes back and error message says:  "display driver stopped responding and has RECOVERED".

I have a Dell All-In-One. Windows 7 Home Premium.  The error message once told me 'Intel... "I didn't get it fast enough.  So, that must tell me my driver is by Intel?

I've followed all the 'help tutorials'.  I've DONE Windows Updates and Recommended updates for anything possible.

Help does suggest getting the driver from original manufacturer.  Should I try tomorrow or next day?  Go to Dell or go to Intel?
I don't know computer JARGON, so I don't really know what to say except what I'm saying here.

This is scaring me.  I fear my computer will crash.

Thanks, Pennie Posting the computer model next time WOULD help. You're correct on downloading the correct driver from the Dell support site only.

Solve : Help Needed With AS501 Speaker Drivers?

Answer»

I recently acquired this PC from a friend. It was running Windows XP. At that time, the speakers/sound were working just fine.

TODAY I decided to upgrade it Windows 7 via clean install. I'm pretty sure the drivers that made it work were WIPED clean off the PC since I am not getting any sound from the speakers or headphones. I have searched high and low but I can't seem to find any drivers that can help me resolve this PROBLEM. DELL's drivers are only up to Windows Vista.

I am running Windows 7 on a DELL XPS 700 Jet Black
AS501 Monitor With Speakers

Connection is not the problem, nor the soundcard, as it was working just fine before I upgraded from XP to Windows 7.

Any help is appreciated.

If Windows 7 drivers aren't available, try the Vista drivers.  7 and Vista are very similar, and Vista drivers ACTUALLY often work just fine for older hardware.

Solve : Universal Drivers?

Answer»

Hello Dears,

I need universal drivers for windows xp have an website for which gave a largest universal drivers or ZIP file of drivers need ibm and hp drivers PLEASE gave me URL of tat siteI am not aware of a bundled driver for those brands that cover EVERY product ever made that is XP compatible. I have yet to see a driver package that covers all universally. If you found some other manufacturers that have universal drivers for all products ever made to cover all chipsets etc... please share. If one was to exist, it would be a very large package since when it comes to HP, some of the driver packages for printers are 150MB and larger in size each and they are specific for the specific PRINTER such as the HP All-in-one Office jet 5610 that we have.

As far as drivers go, I keep a folder with a copy of all drivers ever needed for all computers I have, so that if I have to rebuild them, I can use the drivers I have that are known to work well with the hardware. I then update video drivers and usually leave it at that unless there are bug fixes, in which I will place a newer copy of the driver in this folder and save that for the next clean build.Universal drivers are not as good as the specific hardware and OS driver.
And the are not literally universal.  It they were, they would not exists because such wouldn't be needed. The OS world already have it.

Understandably, component makers get tired of making different versions for very little variation. So they  offer a large monster package the has everything they ever made in one place.

Still, there has been efforts to  simply the cataloging and archiving of all the different drivers. So far, not a huge benefit. For more info:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/hardhat/
The project sis a work in progress.
You need to post the devices you need drivers for...otherwise this is all guesswork

Solve : DRIVER UPDATE GIZMO'S?

Answer»

Hi Fella's!

In my day, when one needed to update any program driver, it was a '*censored* Drive'!    It took ages to find the manufacturers site to start with and then lots more time to sort out and download. (More times than not the journey was a waste of time!)  Nobody relished the idea of updating one's drivers.   Fortunately, back then, there wasn't the need as much as there is today.

With the advent of all the driver finding gizmo's around today, it crossed my mind as to your general opinion of these programs and if any of you favoured any on particular program above another?

Never used a program that updates drivers. They only time i've updated a driver is if there was a fault with something specific, which is rare.Drivers should be updated only if there is a specific reason or need. And you should never use 3rd party driver utilities.I've never trusted any of these driver updating programs, they make claims similar to all the other "PC Booster" tools that it will speed up your PC, make it more stable and more secure.  In fact, many of the companies that sell driver scanning software also make stuff like registry 'boosters'.

I'd only ever download a driver from the manufacturer of the machine/motherboard/part and failing that the manufacturer of the chipset the device features e.g. Realtek.  And for older hardware without drivers for Windows 7/8, Vista drivers usually work fine.

You've got to wonder, if a driver isn't  available through one of these sources above, where does the one that the driver scanner installs come from? They are garbage. Quote from: patio on August 01, 2013, 06:48:13 AM

They are garbage.

This.  It takes seconds, at most minutes, to find a driver.  You have several options - the manufacturer's website (e.g. Asus, EVGA, HP) the chip manufacturer's website (e.g. Intel, Realtek, NVIDIA) and a third party site.  Sometimes the third party site will be legit, sometimes it won't...sometimes it'll have a more recent driver, sometimes it won't.  I tend to get my drivers either from the chip manufacturer, as it will almost certainly be more up to date than the (for example) motherboard manufacturer, or from a trusted source.  I actually usually get my drivers from STATION Drivers, because they're more up to date and it's much easier to find what I'm looking for than wading through Intel's site.

These utilities that scan your system and pick drivers for you often bundle rubbish, or can't find the driver, or give you an outdated or incompatible driver anyway.  They're totally useless.I Agree that they are rubbish.

The reason is that the task they purport to perform is pretty much impossible.

What task is that? Updating installed drivers. This is a difficult task because there is no centralized database of every single driver and it's particular progress through versions. So usually these "driver scanners" are nothing more than crappy package managers reading from the companies website. It also has no direct access to know exactly what piece of hardware the driver is installed for; some later versions of a driver will drop support for older hardware or EVEN certain hardware features; it cannot know this and it would take a lot of testing to adequately discover.

The second problem is that even if we assumed the task was possible- it would serve no purpose. Can out-dated drivers cause issues? well, yes. But the fact is that while out-dated drivers may have bugs or issues, new drivers can also have bugs and issues. If you are using a driver version and you haven't had any issues, then whatever bugs that driver software has don't affect you.

But there is no way to know if the bugs in the updated version will.

And once you know the circumstances where it's reasonable to update a Device Driver, you can see that any application that essentially blankets "new drivers=better drivers" is either ignorant or, more likely, scamming people. There are a few in Chat that sing their praises and swear by them religiously...
I just sit back and watch how many times they wind up wonking someone's hardware for no apparent reason...

And occasionally you see someone who was foolish enough to spend $39 Bucks for one of those useless apps. Quote from: patio on August 01, 2013, 08:48:59 AM

Yep, I absolutely cringe when "you-know-who" preaches about it.

But!  You can get a drivers scan AND defragment your registry at the same time, just think how much faster your PC will be!  Get drivers from the manufactures.
In rare cases, a driver might not be on a North American site because the manufacture of a device may have sold it only overseas. In that case one has to find the location of the company and go to that overseas site.
Otherwise, stay away from used driver dealers.
Well I certainly get the message here fella's  ....  ditch all the driver gizmo's!      Just thought I'd get yer opinions, as yer know I respect all your viewpoints up here!

Quote from: GLOOPS on August 01, 2013, 12:08:41 PM

You could study apostrophes...

Whilst on the subject, what then do you all think about Disk Cleaners and Fragmenters?  There are thousands of these gizmo's about come on ..tell me!  LOL  I don't know what a "disk CLEANER" is.

As for optimizing HD's, while it is less important with NTFS on larger drives than with FAT I do it once a week on all drives on all systems. Partly out of habit, partly because I'm *censored* when it comes to maintenance and "good housekeeping", and partly because there's no downside and there is a likely upside. As far as defragmenting goes, I don't have an internal HDD in any of my systems or the systems I look after (parents and gf) so I don't defragment them as it's not a good idea.  I don't bother defragmenting my external HDD either because it's just used to store things and nothing is deleted, so there's only ever going to be a minimal amount of fragmentation.    I also don't really care how fast it is.
Disk cleaning, assuming you mean things like CCleaner?  If so then in my opinion, very useful, although as with any program you should read what you're doing before blindly clicking through or you may find you're removing files you actually wanted to keep (login details for websites or chat logs).  Certainly saves me a lot of time though and it's invaluable to me when freshening up an older machine that hasn't seen much maintenance, it can sometimes get rid of around 10GB of useless files with a few clicks.

Solve : i got this old GIGBYTE GA-RC415 motherboard. where can i find the right drivers??

Answer»

i checked http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/download-center.aspx?ck=2#9 (for about an hour) but i wasn't able to find the ga-rc415 model.

and of course i don't have the cd.

is there any place where i can find drivers for old motherboards?

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]I think this is likely to be from an OEM PC, and therefore a custom model not listed on Gigabyte's SITE.  If it is from an OEM PC, do you know the make and model of it?  We should be able to direct you to the correct drivers from there, just going on the specifications.
Is itt hat you're missing certain drivers, or need to update them, or you're reformatting and therefore need them all, or...?how can i find its make/model/etc? is it tagged somewhere on the motherboard?

im going to REFORMAT.No, the model number you've written above is the model of the motherboard, but because it's an OEM board, Gigabyte don't have it listed.
Was it a prebuilt machine, maybe a Dell, HP, something like that?i built the pc myself, but the motherboard broke a few days go. so i got this old ga-rc415 as a quick replacement. there is a sticker tagged on it:

"LG TA#002
C2D-1.8G/215
1 M/BIOS: YF04
LGE/DKP/MLB/EBR3684401/'07.05"

aside from that i got no other information about the board.

is that any help?Ah, I see.
Well, your chipset is the ATI RS400, also known as the XPRESS 200, as shown in the second screenshot you posted.  Unfortunately, this wasn't too common back when it was new, and no drivers are available on the AMD (AMD bought ATI) website now.
You could try this DRIVER package or indeed this one.
That should include your storage controller drivers (SATA and IDE), and USB drivers.  You may still need to track down sound and network drivers, if you haven't already, and if you're using the onboard graphics then AMD do still have the last drivers for those here.
Hope this helps, if you need help with the sound and/or network drivers or any others, let us know i've already found the sound and network driver. now i can reformat my desktop

btw, are those two chipset drivers that u mentioned the same? (i mean whichever i download, would  it work?)

thanks man! They should be, yes, just different sources.  I can't guarantee they will work, because obviously I don't have your board, but they should.
Even if they don't, they won't stop the PC from working, so you can always reformat, try them, and if they don't work resume the hunt.Great! im going to try this tommorow. i hope it works

Thanks for the help!No problem, good luck and let us know how it goes I reccommend 3DP chip and 3DP Net

These two programs get you on the net with 3DP Net as it comes with just about every NIC driver you could need at this present moment.
3DP chip SCANS the values as mentioned below and redirects you to a site to download an appropriate value.

If all else fails or the program cannot provide drivers for you...

Windows provides a way to get the details easily

In device manager open the properties of the device that needs a driver.

On the details tab change the drop down box to Hardware IDs

Where it says VEN_XXXX and DEV_XXXX (replace X's with numbers, for example Intel is VEN_8086) these are the two things you need to Google in the same search.

make sure you include the VEN_ and DEV_ or you may get weird results; if there is also a SUBSYS_XXXXXXXX and REV_XX You should include these also as different revisions may require a different driver.

Hope this helps

Solve : video driver and Windows Experience Index?

Answer»

This is not a question, just a comment.  Earlier today, I installed a driver update for my laptop's display adapter.  This came from Windows Updates; it's been out there for a few months and I had avoided getting it but decided to go ahead with it today after finding some info on it that made me feel more comfortable with installing the driver.  Up to this point, I was running the drivers that came per-installed with the computer when new.

Anytime a hardware change (RAM, hard drive, etc.) is done to a computer or a driver update is installed, re-calculating the Windows Experience Index (WEI) may REVEAL a change in one of the WEI components.  I've seen such changes in the WEI before and the change might typically be 0.1 percentage points, and not necessarily in the positive direction.  But, in this case, I was pleasantly surprised to see a much greater change on the plus side.

The result is shown below:
Component   Before   After
Processor:          5.5        5.5
Memory (RAM)   7.2     7.2
Graphics               4.8       6.5
Gaming graphics   6.2   6.5
Primary hard disk   5.9   5.9

Notice the big change in Graphics, and a smaller change in Gaming graphics.  I was amazed when I saw the change in Graphics.
It's funny how certain drivers do have a massive IMPACT on the WEI score.
I tend to avoid graphics drivers from Windows Update unless that's the only place I can get them from (i.e. it's an ancient card).
What chip is it, out of interest? It's an AMD Radeon HD 7420G.  After the update, Device Manager shows:
Driver date: 9/18/2012
Driver version: 8.982.10.6000

I just found a more recent driver at http://www.amd-drivers.com/download-RadeonHD7420G-mobility-driver-for-Windows7-64bit.html

Maybe I'll be updating again soon. I always get the driver from the manufacturer, because I often run into issues with the WU provided driver - either that or they're horrendously out of date.
Interesting that it's had such a big jump in WEI, even though the score is pretty much meaningless.  I really wish they would make the scale work properly, at the minute it doesn't measure anything meaningful and the scale is SENSELESS.  It had the potential to be such an incredibly useful tool.

I realise that sounds like I'm just putting your experience down and it's not intended in that way - updating the driver is a good thing and it should give you better performance anyway. Quote from: Calum on July 19, 2013, 01:26:01 PM

even though the score is pretty much meaningless.  I really wish they would make the scale work properly, at the minute it doesn't measure anything meaningful and the scale is senseless.  It had the potential to be such an incredibly useful tool.

I'm going to have to partly disagree. One of the primary advantages and purposes of WinSAT is to make it so that all Windows Applications and Games can use essentially the same benchmark tests- done by the system- and those ratings can be done independent of the Application.

As for what it measures- actually the ratings themselves are a very brief summary of the data that is collected. There are a huge number of XML files found in %SystemRoot%\Performance\WinSAT\DataStore that you can peruse to see the various measurements made that arrive at that score. Some isolated examples picked from only my Graphics WinSAT data include information about the Pixel Shader Version supported, Resolution, etc. It appears There are numerous tests that use various capabilities, such as texturing, multitexturing, alpha blending, large amounts of polygons, etc.

CPU Scores are calculated using a similar scheme. According to the assessment data it appears to record similar statistics such as total bytes throughput while performing streaming encoding and decoding and encryption/decryption (or both), compression tests, and of course standard mathematic functions and the use of various math instructions. These are recorded in what seems to be pretty good detail- I can look back to when I last ran the test on March 10th, 2010 and see that it took my CPU 732572047  clock ticks to complete the compression assessment using a single thread, and only 182810123 ticks using four threads; It even appears to have data that records the same test being run across the different cores by forcing affinity.

Seems fairly exhaustive. I say I partly disagree, though, because unfortunately no applications actually use it that way and so far it's just been used as a rating for people to compare.

This might seem like a bit of a tangent, but I think it partly explains how the jump would have occurred, particularly on a laptop. Laptops don't generally have very powerful graphics processors, and a lot of the actual Oomph for 3-D acceleration is actually taken on by the Driver software itself. Since the Driver is the thing doing all the work, new versions can make huge improvements to the apparent speed of the thing they are allegedly driving. Even by implementing their own device-sensitive algorithm for specific capabilities can give big gains; if Direct3D cannot find the capability exposed through the Driver on the graphics card, it will just go "ok, fine," and emulate it itself. But that logic will be more or less device agnostic; if the Device driver says "nope, I don't support that Graphics Extension/Capability" in one version, DX will emulate it which will slow things down. If in a later version it says "yep, I support it" and then implements it using an algorithm that involves heavy direct work with the graphics adapter, that is going to end up faster simply because it is more "Direct".

This of course APPLIES with standard "Graphics" which I think measures 2-D Desktop performance. There are numerous accelerator features provided by the video card for features we now take for granted like alpha blending and stretching and resizing bitmaps and whatnot. If these are implemented mostly in the driver software and that driver software happens to improve those implementations, you get faster performance.

Interesting side note: Windows 8.1 has removed the UI for any WinSAT features. That is, you cannot get it anymore.

You can still run the WinSAT tests by running 'Winsat formal' at the command prompt and reading the formal report from the dataStore folder described above.

(Apparently, my laptop now scores 3.6 for Graphics where before Windows 8.1 it scored 3.5- This is clearly the happiest day of my life.)

Seems like you're following me and correcting me lately BC guess I need to sharpen up a little!
You're absolutely right that the WEI does measure performance, what I'm saying is that the scale doesn't necessarily translate to real world performance, and it's a shame that it isn't better in that respect because then it could be used for its original purpose - for example games could be released with a minimum requirement of WEI 6.5, recommended 7.8, instead of a list of SPECIFICATIONS that the average person doesn't understand.
Your explanation of how a driver can make an impressive difference to the score especially on an integrated or lower end card makes perfect sense though. Quote from: Calum on July 20, 2013, 08:52:43 AM

I think the issue is that it's hard to measure real-world performance from software, and it needs to measure stuff like FPS and average FPS and total FPS and stuff. Sort of like ClearType, which you really need to have the user decide what looks best. I think  the WEI is used for some games, or at least they have recommended and required settings.

I wouldn't know precisely how well it translates to real world performance, though; I've certainly not used nearly as many machines and differnet hardware setups as you have, so I'll defer to your experience on that one .

Arguably, the WEI score is at least something to go on. I think it's fair to say, for example, that a System that get's 2.0 isn't going to be running Crysis, and you can see which components are dragging the score down to see which would be the ideal to upgrade. In that sense it sort of has a use and purpose.

It would appear that at least in some sense, MS agrees with you on this though- As I noted 8.1 actually removes any visible reference to the WEI index score, Though I don't know if maybe it's just disabled/removed in the preview.

Another issue is that it only tests DX stuff, and OpenGL and Direct3D can sometimes perform differently on different hardware. It also only tests specific DX versions too. So it's a very exhaustive test of a very specific area (if that makes sense)

Solve : updating my graphics card driver?

Answer»

I recently bought the new Company of Heros 2 and it suggested to ensure my drivers were up to date so I click the recommended link for my card (ATI mobility radeon HD 4650) and installed the catalyst control center which got me the CORRECT driver and installed it. I went to play the game and it still crashes and all sorts of crazy things happen with in the first few minutes of me playing the game. So my QUESTION is, is it possibal that I might need to uninstall the old driver or am I just missing something completely. Thanks for the read. =]

Also my computer specs are 10GB of RAM Intel core 2 duo 2GHz and as stated before my card is ATI mobility radeon HD 4650.I'd make sure that DirectX is the latest. I have RUN into issues with older DirectX. You can run DXDiag from Start Run to check out the version and all other info.

AS seen here, CoH2 requires  DirectX 10 or newer http://en.checkreq.com/company-of-heroes-2

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]I'm on Ver.11 as well. Still no luck.  Have you run Memtest86 on your system. I see you have 10GB RAM. And ATI "mobility" signifies a Laptop. I would also run a stress test benchmark on the video card to make sure its healthy and not overheating or damaged etc.

I am actually surprised you have 10GB RAM as for I thought all boards that supported Core 2 Duo including laptops maxed out at 8GB. What is the Laptop Make/Model?I could be wrong on that 10Gb

And now after looking I do have 8Gb.

I will run that program though.

Another thing I noticed was that right after the game crashes Steam (the program) starts to download a patch. Could it have something to do with that? Quote

Another thing I noticed was that right after the game crashes Steam (the program) starts to download a patch. Could it have something to do with that?

YES this could be the cause! ...  You can always uninstall Steam and download and install a fresh copy to make sure its clean without problems and see if this fixes it. I have had steam get corrupt before, and currently I think I need to uninstall it and install it fresh on my older gaming system because when I tell Windows 7 to shutdown it hangs at waiting for Steam service to shutdown for longer than it should and then eventually shuts down. This computer hasnt been rebuilt since 2010 and so its a mess of games installed many of which i dont play anymore or much etc, and I just have been too lazy to wipe it clean and rebuild fresh again.
Actually found out that Relic (the company that made the game) doesn't support the ATI 4XXX series video cards and did not release that. Relic told ATI to make a driver that was program but its only in beta.

So my question is what is the procedure from manually installing a new graphics ard driver? just uninstall and install the new one?

Solve : The Driver Pack Which Everyone Needs?

Answer»

So OK, I was fixing a laptop 1 time and I could not find the GRAPHICS driver anywhere. I GOOGLED for hours, even WINDOWS Updates would not found the drivers.
After hours of RESEARCH, I am across a software called DriverPack Solution (http://drp.su/). Downloaded it thinking it was a waste of time like other driver software's I've used.
HOWEVER, I placed it on a DVD and opened it on the computer where I needed to drivers and BOOM... the driver I needed was there. Installed it and it worked like a dream.

For the people who had/having the same issues, I would recommend using that software.

Thanks

Solve : cannot find 2 drivers for dell dimension 510?

Answer»
Everytime I've reformatted my hard DRIVE, I always end up with (2) missing (yellow question marks in device manager), drivers, even after going to the Dell website and downloading every possible driver for Windows XP. for the Dimension 510.  The 2 are Universal Serial Bus (usb) Controller and Multimedia Video Controller....once Tom's Hardware found the USB controller driver, but this time I cannot find it or them!  Any help will be appreciated.
TKOThe USB controller driver will be included in the chipset drivers.  If installing the chipset drivers from Dell doesn't work, GRAB them from the Intel website here.  Try the EXE file first - if that doesn't work, download the zip file instead, extract it, then right click on the USB controller in device manager, click update driver, and point it to that folder.
As for the multimedia video controller, that's most likely a TV card, I see that the 510 had the option of an internal or external card.  Have you grabbed the drivers for those off the Dell site?  If so, post the ID of the device - you can get that from device manager by going to the device's properties, then Details, then hardware ID.Thanks for the answers; the driver from the Dell site for the TV card did work (I eventually GOT the right one......didn't download it before, as I knew I didn't have any TV connection, however, guess it doesn't have to be a working one, just that there is such a card?

The other driver, I found when I remembered that I had installed a 4 port 3.0 USB card, but didn't THINK about re-installing the driver.  The driver was available on the web, luckily, as I couldn't find my driver disk, which I must have had when installing.  I now have 11 "working" USB ports, with the (4) 3.0 ports!

I appreciate your ADVICE!

TKOIndeed, as long as the card is plugged in, if it doesn't have a driver installed you will have a yellow triangle next to it - the triangle just warns that the driver is  not functioning or is not installed, it doesn't matter if the card is in use or not.
Good catch on the USB card, glad to hear it's all up and running now!

Solve : Lenovo IdeaPad S12 not booting up?

Answer»

Hi all,
I've been searching for a solution for hours, though nothing worked.
I tried to install OpenELEC on a partition, already having WINXP and Ubuntu 12.04 installed on other partitions. I've followed a guide for manual installation, at the end of which I copied a SYSTEM FILE into the partition. After rebooting, I saw a blinking cursor at the top left corner of the screen, and nothing else happens.
I tried booting from an ubuntu livestick, winXP recovery usb, gparted livestick - it all results in the same blinking cursor.

I also tried finding a file to recover the bios, but I couldn't.
Any ideas?

THANK you,
Johnny.
I am thinking that if you didnt corrupt the 2 other partitions that Grub or other bootloader you are using is not configured correctly maybe. I am guessing that before this install you had grub or another bootloader that gave choice for which OS to boot and ever SINCE this manual install now you have just a blinking cursor?

Did you play around with resizing any partitions to make room for the 3rd partition for this OpenELEC to be installed?

You should be able to boot off the Ubuntu 12.04 DVD and run the Linux Live environment and be able to fix the issue with bootloader, however if you cant get a Live Distro running than you may have a hardware failure.Thank you for your reply.

Indeed I configured grub and I may have done it wrong. However, as you SAID, I can't boot from the ubuntu live distro. Could I have corrupted the BIOS or something similar?Only way to corrupt the bios would be if it took a bad flash. This is something that has to be intentional. Its not something that is accidental from an OS install to a partition or playing with grub.

I'd make sure that the optical drive or usb pen drive is the first device to boot in the BIOS assuming you can still enter it to configure it, with this optical drive and or usb accepting bootable devices prior to any hard drives, so that if a bootable pen drive or disc is present it will boot if the system is still healthy hardware wise.

Solve : New Build having hard drive / SSD Issue?

Answer»

I built a new computer, and included a SEAGATE 1T hard drive, along with a a Samsung 240G SSD. I installed windows 7 Pro on the SSD and have been using the comp for a few days, and realized its not letting me save anything onto my 1T HD. It does not appear when i go to my computer to try and find it otherwise i could just manually move things over. It DOES appear in my device manager, under disk drives, i check it, it says its functioning properly and reads the disk space. I'm just not able to access it in any WAY. Anything i google is how to install an SSD after your computer is up and running. I am really hoping i dont need to do a system wipe and reinstall and then migrate to the SSD... If at all possible i want to AVOID that! Thanks very looking forward to some help! You will likely need to format the drive and create a partition on it - There are THIRD party tools to do this but you may also be able to do it under Windows Disk Management. That fixed it.... i feel pretty dumb with how simple that was XD Thanks so much!

Solve : Devices not identified and no internet?

Answer»

I just got a custom built PC from my friend and there are six devices that have no info about them. One of them is the ethernet controller. My friend told me it has wireless capabilities but I can't find anything about that device. I can get on the internet but I have to use a hotspot that I plug in to the USB port. When I try to use the internet to update the drivers nothing is found. I am pretty MUCH lost. Any help?If a desktop computer and the devices such as Ethernet are integrated to the MOTHERBOARD, I'd look at the motherboard for a make/model number to get the drivers direct from board manufacturer. And example would be like the silk screen of my older GAMING system that shows MCP6PB M2+ and is a Biostar. I can go online and get all the drivers off of Biostar's website as well as flashes if needed, although i wouldnt FLASH the bios unless it is absolutely necessary to fix a bug or to add support for faster more modern CPU support as was the case with myself to install a quadcore to this board.

If the Network Adapters are cards in slots. Carefully remove them and write down info on them such as make/model, PART number or FCC ID. Then go to the manufacturers website of these cards and download the drivers to a USB thumb drive as for they can be just a few megs in size to a few hundred megs.

Solve : Getting 'Serious' errors-Windows 7?

Answer»

Hello, I'm trying to smile - but when it's my computer, I freak!

The past 2 weeks I've been getting various error messages, but since the computer continued to
work just fine, I took my time and worked ONE hour a day to BACK up everything except programs.

I did 'System Restore' three times with no help.  And of coarse I've checked all the drivers.

Now I just read it's time to reload it back to factory settings.

Here's my question:  when everything is down and I insert a disc, which is it?  I have 2 disc's.

a) One says "Reinstallation DVD Windows 7 HOME Premium SP 1 64-Bit
b) The other says "Drivers and Utilities" already installed your computer"

Solve : CD won't play?

Answer»

I purchased a new, brand new in package w/ wrapping Nanci Griffith CD and when it would not play in computer but would on JVC stereo system exchanged it for another new cd.  Real PLAYER ( old version ) could read song list but not play. Upgraded and now can't read song list. OK go to windows media ( system Dell xps 11 MOS. old, 8 meg memory, windows 7 home prem. )  all it does is open, give me gibberish across top of screen and tries to play but nothing happens. OK to I-Mesh. Nope no luck. What do I need to play this? I listen to music more at my computer than at the stereo so please help. If it PLAYS OK in another computer, possibly the optical drive in the computer is suspect.
Drive plays other cd's games and media.  This CD just won't play in computer. Have downloaded codec updates,  Imesh can now read song titles but won't play, at least can't hear. Play bar moves but no sound and drive keeps restarting, only on this cd though. Drive could be OK on data disks but still crap out on audio CDs. Or CD could be copy protected. (These will not play in computer drives)

To Salmon      it must be copy protected, I discovered it was an AF3 filter codec  and downloaded that, no help so it must be copy protected as you say.

Solve : Mini USB reader error?

SPECS:
Gateway DX4320
AMD Radeon HD 6670
WINDOWS 7 premium 64bit
6gb RAM
AMD Phenom(tm) II x4 820 Processor 2.8gz
You can try removing the USB boot option in bios and see if that helps. In boot order make sure it is not an option or the last on the list after C: drive. Although for the fact that you have EN error in event log its making its way to Windows startup when this is happening. If this mini USB reader CAME with drivers I'd make sure they are up to date.

Which model is this USB reader... I am assuming SD Card Reader is what it is, is this original to the Gateway computer build internally or added on later as an external reader which can be REMOVED to see if the computer boots fine without it attached?

Solve : USB Ports have power but wont detect device?

Answer»

I have a DEll Precision 390 computer, I upgraded to windows 7 64 bit OS and now my USB ports (none of them) will detect a device, they do have POWER though.  I have checked all the BIOS settings, uninstalled - reinstalled etc, tried to go to Dell for support but they dont have drivers for the Windows 7 for the Precision 390 (I assume BC it came with windows XP), the roll back driver is grayed out and when I try to update driver it says the latest driver is what i have.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I am at my wits end with this and losing my mind The 975X chipset in the Precision 390 should certainly be supported by Windows 7, and the USB controller should need no additional drivers to work.  Do the ports work before Windows loads, for example can you use a USB keyboard to get into and navigate the BIOS?
If so, try this - that's a direct link to DOWNLOAD the latest chipset driver from Intel.None of the USB Ports work before startup.  I downloaded the chipet from your link and installed, unfortunately it didnt resolve problem.

I apologize for the delay in getting back to you, I still have no clue what COULD possibly be causing the USB ports to just not detect a device but to supply power. If the ports aren't working even before Windows loads, that's a hardware problem and not driver or OS-related.
What options related to USB do you have in the BIOS?

Solve : I had a virus in windows xp accidentally did system recovery instead of restore?

Answer»

After the recovery it went back to original state, but now my drivers wont update, I keep getting library kernell errors, dll errors. I cant get  acccess anything with microsoft it shuts me down if I attempt microsoft update. I cant access any of their sites. The service pack went back to 1 and windows 5.5. I cant update to any other service packs or windows. I tried to go to pchealth cd NET and download programs that could fix this for me but I get a library kernell error after downloading each program. Can Anyone help or suggest? If you have the original media that came with the system or should have been burned to disc or made into bootable thumb drives, I would rebuild it from the media back to clean out of box state from factory. Virus's like to block you from access to websites/tools that would remove them. Booting from CD, DVD, or thumb drive and setting it back to factory would fix this.

If you dont have the media for this system then let us know and a moderator will redirect this to the Virus/Malware forum where it would get more attention from CERTIFIED malware specialists. I havent gotten certified yet, so I cant post there, but there are many guru's here who can assist. Quote from: DaveLembke on May 04, 2013, 08:25:50 PM

He did a System Recovery, so no NEED for that.

It's likely SP1 is the issue.  Downloading the latest service pack & installing should fix all.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24 Quote

They stated that they cant get to microsoft, so they need to Backup personal data to thumb drive or external drive if any important data is STILL on drive, then bring it back to factory clean state using system recovery media, and then set it back to the same it was fresh out of box, which should be healthy working condition without issues!

If wiping the system clean and setting it back to factory shows issues then the recovery set may have been corrupt somehow, or a virus etc touched on the system recovery partition to make for problems if it was run without Discs and just triggered off the cripled os to hit start the recovery from the partition allocated for recovery media such as D: etc.

From No, they stated they can't get to MS Update.  I gave direct link to SP3.  Does not require using Microsoft Update.  It's a 300MB download.

It's too late to backup anything since they already did the Recovery.

I THINK the issue is IE5.5 doesn't support the latest ActiveX for authentication.

Solve : DVD/CD-ROM drives disappeared after XP updates?

Answer»

Athlon 900MHz
384MB RAM
BenQ DVD-ROM (MODEL  16508)
Samsung CD-RW (model SW-208B)

apologies in advance about so much detail, but it probably covers some of the questions I’d be asked initially if I didn’t!

So.....

I'm fixing up a 10 – 12 year old PC I had lying about. I put XP Pro SP3 on it & everything worked fine until I installed loads of windows updates then both the optical drives disappeared from My Computer & System Info, & in DEVICE Manager now have the yellow circle & ! by them. The Samsung drive is listed by name & model, but the BenQ drive just says DVD-ROM 16X i.e. generic

Device Manager > DVD/CD-ROM drives > drive properties > driver tab > driver details shows the same for both drives:
.....system32\ DRIVERS\cdrom.sys
.....system32\ DRIVERS\imapi.sys
.....system32\ DRIVERS\redbook.sys
.....system32\ storprop.dll

I've tried:

  • running the add hardware wizard... I get "...cannot load driver.....may be corrupted or missing (code 39)" for both
  • physically removing the drives, rebooting, shutting down, then putting them back in & rebooting – didn’t help
  • deleting them from Device Manager then rebooting – it seemed to work....they reappeared there without the !s, but then a minute later the !s reappeared
  • disabling/re-enabling them
  • uninstalling/reinstalling in Device Manager
  • updating drivers....”no better driver found”
  • ROLLING back the drivers....”no driver files backed up for this device”
  • I set the  CD-ROM as 1st boot device in the BIOS & rebooted with the win XP CD in the drive & the comp started to go into the setup process, so it seemed like the drive was being recognised & working, but doesn’t if I've booted from the HDD into windows & put the win XP CD in
I don’t know which particular update caused the problem & there were so many of them that I'm very reluctant to uninstall them all (EVEN if I could without doing a fresh windows install) & then reinstall 1-by-1

I'm out of ideas, so any other suggestion very welcome!

TIA

Even if you get the CD's working, 384MB is no longer enough for WinXP-SP3, 1GB is about minimum.it does work, though it is agonisingly slow compared with a modern computer! it actually more than meets the minimum, & even the recommended, requirements for basic XP.....does adding the service packs etc onto that really make such a difference?

i'm having a clear out & am fixing this up to give to someone who doesn't have a PC & can't afford to buy one, so it’ll be better than nothing....maybe he'll put a bit more memory in when he can afford it
I tried all of those....no joy!

i'm thinking of the alternative windows approach - throw it out of a high window & see if improves it!

Solve : Bad drivers after malware removal?

Answer»

Now the story gets more intriguing...why is it missing from your Vista install ? ?It's not missing at least i hope its not, WINDOWS VISTA start up repair reports a bad driver.
This is the last driver it loads when I start windows normally before the screen flickers and then the computer restarts.
I am wondering if I can replace it from a working vista install.Where is this Vista CD from that your using for the repair ? ?
And what exactly does it say on it ? ?
Just because it hangs on startup with a driver listed is no indication it's that driver at fault...
The more we go into this the more confusing it seems to get.
If it's not a legit Vista CD that's probably 1/2 the issue right there. Its legit vista oem from acer

The dvd's repair GIVES me the same thing as vista's start up repair:
Windows was unable to repair your computer auto-maticly
Then it prompts me whether or not i want to report this to Microsoft.
and under the options is the OPTION to view the details of the problem (2 of the 3 different screen shots)Some more iPod PICTURES:

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]I'm gonna have to pass on this one from here out...GOOD Luck.I tried the crcdisk.sys from the recovery partition and from a different vista installation.
I will now wipe the drive and reinstall. After vista failed to boot after many attempts of TRYING to install it, it occurred to me that one of the ram sticks could be bad.  Sure enough bios only reported one stick of ram.  (If you saw the screen shot of the model number I added 2 sticks of 256 ddr2) one wasn't in all the way and the other tested as bad.I gave up after you stated you did a repair install from an OEM Acer CD.

Solve : Sound isn't working on ANY media player? Sorry for the long description.?

Answer»

Right, I have a ACER Aspire V5-531. The processor is Intel(R) PENTIUM(R) CPU 967 1.30GHz 1.30 GHz and it has a 64-bit operating system. Now all the technical bit is out of the way, I'll get to the problem. This laptop came with Dolby Advanced Audio and one day it randomly popped up saying; 'Unable to start the Dolby audio driver. Please restart the computer or reinstall the driver if the problem persists.' So, obviously the first thing I did was search the internet for a problem and all the solutions I could find SAID for me to uninstall and reinstall the driver... One problem; in the Devices and Maintenance section on the laptop, there is no such driver present, which I don't understand. So then I fully update windows and still the problem persists, nothing happened, so I found the download for the driver online and installed; nothing happened. I even asked windows to repair the driver itself, still the problem persists and nothing has changed. By this point I'm GETTING pretty annoyed because obviously windows media player wasn't playing video files because of this. The next thing I did was download Winmap media player and also VLC media player to see if I had the same issue on there. Winmap didn't even play video files so I uninstalled and VLC plays the video, but no audio. I presumed that this was due to the Dolby DIGITAL issue. So, I then uninstalled the entire program and reinstalled it onto my laptop again and guess what? The problem is still there and I still get the same message and no media player plays out sound. But, what I don't understand is that I get sounds off all other areas of my computer, including other video playing sites such as YouTube. I even get the mouse clicking sound for God's sake!
Now, there's the problem, and I'm posting it on here because I am hoping that someone has a solution for me (preferably step by step, I'm not a total computer whiz haha.) Please help me as soon as possible because as you can probably tell, this is extremely irritating me and I have tried every possible solution that I can think of. It would have been sorted if I could actually find the driver or possibly switch the driver my computer uses for the media players?
I have Windows 7 if that helps, and like I said it's all fully updated and scanned for any viruses and stuff like that... Please help! Thanks! Is it Windows 7 or 8? Did you check device manager on this? See the driver here http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/driversWindows 7 and yes I did check device manager but, like I said, the driver doesn't seem to be anywhere to be found. Also, I've already tried to download the driver at Acer, but it doesn't show up when I enter my serial number or model etc. If it's a laptop or Netbook it may be part of the Chipset drivers...if so try re-installing those and re-booting...I don't know what Chipset drivers are? But yeah it's a laptopIf you don't have the Driver CD that came with the laptop get them from the laptop manuf. site directly...

Solve : Driver Install failed?

Answer»

Hello,

I am running a Toshiba Satellite L750 (PSK2YA-0CN02S) and my graphics card is a Nvidia Geforce GT 525M.  I upgraded to windows 8 not long after it was released.

I have been getting this error (view link below) http://gyazo.com/8a66e36020e56671fc533870ca368274

The problem started when I tried updating my video card driver from SlimDriver (which I should of not TOUCHED). Since then I can't play any games on League of Legends. I get that error which you will see in that link above.

1. I tried from the Nvidia website too, but that didn't really do anything either.
2. I also tried installing my driver from the Toshiba website, but it only supports windows 7 (which failed installing). So far nothing has worked, any suggestions WOULD be GREAT!

Second screenshot (was the 3rd thing I tried): http://gyazo.com/7864007891f0b97660a5bda2e7f03b45

If anyone can figure out this problem of mine real soon, Much would be appreciated!

CHEERS, thanks.

-ScorpiiiousAnother problem I have been having is my printer. I have something I wanted to print today but my computer said it was offline but it wasn't. Then later on it said I had no printers installed and some error thing came up.Sounds like those drivers aren't compatible with Windows 8.

Lets deal with your graphics first.

Head to the NVIDIA website and see if you can find any Windoews 8 drivers for your graphics card.Laptop drivers should always and only be obtained from the website of the laptop manufacturer. You should CONTACT Toshiba and ask if your system is compatible with Windows 8 and, if it is, how to obtain the drivers you need.

Solve : Broadcom BCM4306KFB Wireless G Adapter for eMachine m5405?

Answer»

Need help trying to find a DRIVER:

Been trying to hunt down this driver for this internal wifi nic for an eMachine laptop model m5405. I expected the other drivers to be more trouble than a Broadcom driver, but it appears that Broadcom does not have any legacy driver support that I can find for this Broadcom BCM4306KFB chip in the card:
83-880099-0000 E3D0
WMIB-114G

Also finding references to Dell and Gateway for this network adapter yet no drivers work that I can find. This system was so full of virus's/malware when i got it. I was able to go to device manager while it was infected and write everything down before blowing the OS away to start clean. So I know that this NIC worked when it had the correct driver, but correct driver cant be found    One website based in Germany possibly with website ending in .DE had a DOWNLOAD that I waited 90 SEC to download and in the end it was an Intel driver not broadcom, and it didnt match the 5.5MB of the advertised size and was only 800k in size.

OS is Windows XP Home SP3 and Laptop is a Sempron XP 2800 with 512MB RAM

ThanksTried the MBoard manuf. site yet ? ?

P.S. Since it's a laptop it may be included in the CHIPSET driver package...if you have those try a re-install...I shudder when i see "eMachines"...Dunno if this helps...

I shudder when i see "eMachines"...

LOL ... Yah I know what you mean. I have yet to have a rebuild of one w/o original install disc's that ever went smooth. This is a friends laptop that I cleaned up for him by wiping drive clean and starting fresh. I expected the Sound, Video to be where I was going to be hunting for drivers and the sound was the common AC97 Realtek and the Video Driver for the SiS GPU was also easy to find. The last driver to get for this was the Broadcom Wireless Card and I thought I should be out of the woods, was thinking to myself this has been the most painless eMachines rebuild yet, and then it struck me... I should have not thought this as for I jinxed myself with that thought seeing Broadcom as the MFR of the device.

Salmon:
I tried the driver you linked and it goes through the install process running Setup.exe, then rebooted the system and still shows up in device manager as not satisfied. I then tried to manually point the reinstall driver to the home directory where the driver is located after this expands and it still wasnt happy.

Patio:
I didn't find a chipset driver package, but I found a download link "FINALLY" that looks promising. Located here: http://support.gateway.com/us/en/emac/product/default.aspx?modelId=1669 which is 76MB in size, which looks promising since most regular NIC's are not that large in size. For lack of description at this website as to if its for the Broadcom Wireless G or not and now at work I cant test it yet, I will have to test this after I get home from my 12 hr shift.

Thank You both for your time trying to hunt down the driver for me!    I also forgot that Gateway bought out eMachine, as this link above indicates. And I remember that Acer bought out Gateway. 3 of the lesser quality name brands now combined..

Fortunately I dont have to deal with too many eMachines or Gateways anymore, but sometimes driver support for even well known name brands like HP or Toshiba can be a PAIN as well, especially if using an OS that was not the intended original OS from manufacturer.

I still have an eMachine motherboard linked here:  http://www.motherboards.org/mobot/motherboards_d/Trigem/Imperial-GLVE/   at home that I use for older games, testing, and running automated processes. 5 years ago I went crazy trying to find the video driver for Windows XP and no support for it on eMachines website, and when i finally found the right driver to get better than 800x600 resolution, to get the 1024x768 which I wanted, I made sure to save a backup copy of this driver, so that I'd never have to go through this mess ever again with that motherboard. Sure enough when curiosity got the best of me and I tested Windows 7 32-bit home premium on the eMachines Motherboard TriGem Imperial 2002_1111 GL_VE Socket 478 Pentium 4 2.0Ghz with 1GB Ram (which I got originally for free as a Celeron 2Ghz and 128MB Ram)... the upgrade from Windows XP Pro SP3 to Windows 7 32-bit Home Premium went well with exception to having to find a video driver for Windows 7 and Intel's legacy support only covers Windows XP as the newest OS supported. I was able to force Windows 7 to take the XP driver for Intel 845GL North Bridge and get 7 to have better than 256 colors and 640x480 with 1024x768 and 16-bit color. But Windows 7 32-bit was really a stretch for this 11 year old motherboard, and so I reverted back to XP Pro SP3 which runs fast and healthy on this hardware that was manufactured during the Windows XP OS era. The only modern OS that runs well on this hardware is Linux, and I have a removable drive with Mint 14 on it as a OS choice.http://support.gateway.com/us/en/emac/product/default.aspx?modelId=1669

This driver is the Broadcom Wireless 802.11 G Driver for the eMachines m5405 for Windows XP 32-bit. Now connected via wifi and no problems! Now for 119 MS Updates for XP..LOL

Thanks everyone!

Solve : Sony Vaio laptop VNG-NW240F?

Answer»

I have a sony vaio laptop and it won't recover and it or repair and it keeps shutting down.
How long does it run before it shuts down? If you time it and its very soon after turning it on ( usually less than 30 seconds ), it could be a fan that is failing to spin and the system is PROTECTING itself from cooking the CPU or GPU etc. If its a fan that is failing to spin, it usually always fails after so many seconds of being powered on to boot up, unless the fan is intermittent. ( Laptop Fans getting hair, food crumbs, lint, and other objects into them, cause them to fail. Hair both Animal and Human being the cause of the majority of the fans I have found not turning in which a single strand of human hair can loop around a fan blade and wrap itself tight around its SPINNING shaft and no longer spin. )

If it shuts down at random times, be sure the battery has a full charge, and that the AC adapter is powering the laptop while the computer is running. If it behaves on wall power, then it might be a weak battery. To test the battery you would after a full charge disconnect the wall power from laptop and monitor the battery health. If you see it dropping in % / minutes remaining fairly quickly then you have a battery that needs to be replaced.

Sony did have an issue with batteries failing a few years ago, some of them catching fire during failure. I am unsure as to the affected models and if your laptop was made during that battery recall period given that you have a Core 2 Duo.

The last 2 things I can think of that will cause what may seem to be random shutdowns is that the laptop is overheating and shutting itself down when it reaches its temp limit to protect itself, or a Virus that shuts down the computer (*Note: If it is a virus, it will act like the motherboard is not detecting a fan tach pulse and will shut down at almost the exact period of time, but if less than 30 seconds its more than likely a failed fan, however if its after say *1 MINUTE and 22 seconds and is about this duration each time it shuts down then it is possible for a virus to be triggering as part of the start up to then direct the system to shutdown. )
* 1m 22s is just an example, not an actual period of time to relate to. The period of time between power up and shutdown of a system infected which such a virus is determinant on many factors, but generally the faster the computer, the faster the shutdown after power up, while the slower the computer the longer it will STAY on before shutting itself down as directed by the virus. BUT some are designed to shutdown the system within 60 seconds to make REMOVAL a bunch of fun such as linked: http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/computer-shuts-down-60-seconds-t157306.html

BUT lets not derail to malware just yet... more info is needed on this to assess the situation, and point you in the correct direction.

Lastly is there any history to this failure, such as was it dropped 2 weeks ago and today you turn it on for the first time and it has problems etc, or has any other problems occurred prior to this failure which may be related, such as noticable shortened battery life or anything else to share with us to determine the next troubleshooting steps to suggest?

Solve : Drivers for Toshiba Satellite C855D?

Answer»

I just recently bought a Toshiba Satellite C855D. Per the normal process when I buy a new pc, I started to UPDATE all the device's drivers. I however cannot seem to locate a driver for the Processor (AMD E-300 APU). I also updated the driver for the graphics card (AMD Radeon HD 6300) with the latest Catalyst Suite. During the install I received an error in a .xml report (See below). Everything in the report seemed to be fine except at the very bottom of the page it reads: "Driver Install: the specified driver package was not installed for matching devices". Yet when I go to Device manager under Display adapters it now reads "AMD Radeon HD 6310 Graphics" and the driver date is now 3/28/13. I'm mostly concerned with updating the Processors driver if possible but it would be nice to get some opinions on whether or not i will experience issues from the error during the Catalyst install (No problems at the moment).

Driver Install: the specified driver package was not installed for matching devices

Laptop drivers should come only from the laptop manuf. site...
The reason you are having issues is you are getting drivers based on the device...not the laptop itself.
I'd DLoad and re-install all listed drivers for that PC from Toshiba's site.Thank you for your reply. I'm aware of that however most laptop manufacturers do not keep their drivers up to date with the new drivers for the corresponding hardware. Or are you saying I should IGNORE this?In my opinion...yes.
If there is a feature or fix that is important enough the Manuf. would CERTAINLY release updated drivers to address the issue...
If there are no updated drivers for your specific laptop at the manuf. site then you're fine.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke.Thank you again. My goal was not to fix something that was broken, it was to get the optimal performance out of my hardware by installing the most recent drivers. Drivers are not something that are crucial for manufacturers to update anyway. Which is why I think they  are "lazy" in that regard. You can run a PC with the very first drivers ever released for each piece of hardware installed, but if the updates that are released did not improve some aspect of the previous driver, why would they spend the time making them? I'm just going to leave it be for now I SUPPOSE. . But having a driver for my processor that is from 2009 seems odd to me.

Solve : ATI Catalyst for Linux?

Answer»

My dual boot Dell 9400 laptop is freezing immediately after login in Linux (Lubuntu).  I had the same problem when I booted into XP until I was ABLE to download ATI Catalyst and .NET ver 1.1.  I can run in Linux in recovery mode (doing it now), but I'm looking for a fix.  I found a Linux download for ATI Catalyst and tried DOWNLOADING it, but I cannot figure out how to install it (I think I found the files on my hard drive, but they may be the ones I downloaded for XP).  Any ideas?I had to install the ATI Catalyst driver for my system running MINT Cinnamon 13 with ATI Radeon HD5450 video card. Will see if I still have that driver for info on my one test box to share with you.

I needed it to be able to PLAY World of Warcraft through Mint 13 and Wine 1.4 to increase my frame rate from 4 fps with DEFAULT linux generic driver to 15 fps. But the other thing I found out is that the card had to run games with OpenGL vs DirectX so due to OpenGL the games took a video performance hit. I was hoping to cure it with a better driver, but BC_Programmer pointed out the fact that I was UNAWARE of which was that, its using OpenGL and thats my problem with the poor performance with that game.My laptop has ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 video driver.  The ATI website says that it is not supported.  I found the download information on another site forum and copied and pasted into terminal.  I think all the files are on my drive, but I can't figure out how to install them.Laptop drivers should ALWAYS come from the laptop manuf. site...not the chip maker's...

I'm not sure if I need to download "Everest Home" or do something else to find the drivers. The only place from which to download laptop drivers is from the website of the laptop manufacturer.
Well it's made by DELL, but I can't find the drivers anyways because I tried getting them from the manufacturer's website, but it claims that I have "custom drivers" or something like that (my memory isn't at its best at the moment, sorry if that sounds odd). Is there ANYTHING I can do to locate the drivers that I need?If you purchased the system from Dell just go to their website and enter your service tag number. You'll be TAKEN to a page with the drivers for your system. And please, when you request assistance on a support forum, "something like that" isn't helpful. We need to know the EXACT WORDING of any error messages you receive and when and where you receive them.

I am kinda new at posting. So if I PUT it in the wrong SPOT or if I MISSED any thing Sorry.Sorry forgot Video card Nvidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430I solved the problem It’s really an annoying error. There are several reasons for this error like, hardware or software failure, computer power failure, not compatible drivers and after updating window sometimes this error occurs. The first time I got this error was when I plugged out my computer before shutting it down. I asked my friend about the solution and he told me to remove RAM from the mother board and install it again and I was surprised to see that the error was gone. I USED this solution many times and it was a success. But sometimes when this solution does not works I use the other two solutions,

1. Last Known Good Configuration
2. Window Repairing Utility

But I’m pretty sure that removing RAM and installing it again will work.

Solve : SONY BTF-PA402Z Looking for XP or Win 7 32bit driver?

SONY BTF-PA402Z

Looking for XP or Win 7 32bit driver

Plucked this TV/Capture card out of a Pentium 4 Sony Vaio Tower that wasnt worthy of being rebuilt due to old guts. Having troubles trying to find a driver for it. Windows XP and Windows 7 show ! in hardware manager.

Wish driverguide.com was still free to search their database for this driver. Use to get on with user=drivers password=all     many years ago.

ThanksGood evening DaveLembke

I don't know it they work but I did find this http://www.mitsdrivers.com/pages_btf-pa402z-driver.html from the posts I have found they say it seems to want to install driver detective first I honestly don't know if it would find the drivers or not. I clicked on the link and it was only 339kb I don't know being so small it is the real driver or if it safe .

Is there any other FCC ID's / model numbers or any other info on the card that is on a sticker or silk-screened on the PCB? Maybe if we can find the card manufacture / chip we might be able to get drivers. I looked at MS site for compatibility and no sony tuner cards are listed if we can find the real company that made it I think we will have better luck. Maybe it is really a leadtek, avermedia, diamond etc.

In Windows 7 if you look at the HW id in the device manager what does it say anything good?

In Windows 7 when in the device manager if you tell it to use windows update does it say it is not compatible or it only checks for like 1 sec and stops and says nope it couldn't find anything? or does it really look and then say nothing is found for a update.

Do you know the PC model that it came out of?

What bit version of windows 7 is it 32 or 64 bit? and I am assuming XP will be 32 bit?

Still looking hope to hear from you soon, Mike

Both OS XP and 7 are 32-bit. I have 2 drives in my system that I intend to use this card with dual boot, so if XP drivers are only available, since the original Vaio build was XP Home Media Edition thats fine.

I too found that link in google pointing to driver detective and avoided that like the plague..LOL, also found some older links that  lead to nowhere. Wish I wrote down the exact model number of the Vaio tower before tossing it out to recycle. I just REMEMBER that it had a Pentium 4 HT 3.0 Ghz in it and it was loaded with features of which the TV/Capture card was the only part that still had value to me with the rest of the guts too old for any beneficial need that I have.

Before posting here I also went to sonys site and no luck there.

I do recall seeing a chip on it  with Conexant brand name, so maybe its really a Conexant Capture card, rebranded as SONY. Just did a Conexant   BTF-PA402Z search instead of SONY BTF-PA402Z and found a potentially helpful link in which another individual is praising it, so maybe this is the location of the solution. Maybe I just need to pay and join driverguide to get it.  http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=21594

From my home computer I will dig further, as for I CANT from work computer on 15 min break.. Thanks for your assistance  A shot in the dark here and took a while to track down, but I found a driver for Windows XP MCE. You can try it and see if it works. This model of computer included that particular card and that's what this driver is for. It's a direct download from Sony, so no need to worry about viruses or scams. If it works, it works. If not, uninstall it and keep looking.

You'll find the driver under the MPEG section. Finally found a driver that works. The one linked by Quaxo appeared to require that it be run on the original Sony computer or else it would not install driver. I ended up finding the driver through a website similar to driver guide of which its name skips my mind at the moment. I was able to download the driver package for free about 34MB of it and unzip it after first scanning it for anything bad. I then pointed Windows to the driver location and it mounted the Capture Card and according to Windows XP Pro, it is now happy with it.

Next came finding a software package that would work with this card. I had a USB Capture Device with ulead software and so I attempted to use that software to use this TV Capture Card and it is able to initialize this Capture Card I am guessing since a small green surface mount LED on the capure card goes green when selecting it from devices, but this ulead software does not properly support it other than initialization request from what i can tell. Nothing displayed on the preview panel and when attempting to record it says no signal detected yet I know that there is a signal present, and the capture card is set to the correct channel.

So I went to try to find software that will work with this capture card and still have yet to find one that works. I tried a bunch and none of them detect this capture card, yet ulead was able to detect it and initialize it. EVEN tried Freevo Live Linux CD to see if that could even support it both the latest ISO version 15 as well as a prior Legacy Device Support ISO without success. Seen LOTS of software ONLINE that costs money and claims that it works with a wide range of capture devices, but I'd rather not spend any money if possible and I am not about to spend money and take a chance that it will work or not work without refunds of software that is $50 a pop.

Seen online other people in google searches with issues trying to get this Capture Card to work with software packages and maybe I should just toss this card out and buy a new one that comes with driver CD etc and support, although I bought a K-World Capture Card 8 years ago and it never worked in my Compaq Presario AMD Athlon XP 2800+ with 1GB RAM running Windows XP Home, and I should have returned it, but too much time went by and so I had a $30 paperweight.

Anyone have any suggestions of software to try with this capture card?
