For the past two days my computer keeps saying

'Disk write ERROR
Unable to write to disk in drive C:

press any key to continue'

When I reboot it says that I need to run scandisk to repair any problems on the disk. Scandisk does not help and it does not FIND any errors, even when I scan thoroughly.

I cannot figure it OUTHOW did you make this problem occur?I don't KNOW how the problem occured. The night before it was fine and then the next DAY I turned the computer on it was saying disk write errorAttempt to start your computer using a bootdisk.

Hi! Not quite used to asking help on this sort of thing but:

I recently upgraded my PC from:

AMD 8320
Gigabyte 970A-D3SP Rev.1.0
G.Skill Ripjaws X 1866 DDR3

To:

AMD Ryzen 5 3600x
ASUS Prime x470 PRO
G.Skill Trident Neo 3600

(Same GPU [ASUS 1060 6g Turbo] and wifi card)

In short I think it's an issue regarding the new hardware and old/corrupted drivers.

Anyways, it ran perfectly fine for the past few days when overnight on the 4th/5th, I woke to a boot loop with the BSOD: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (Path storport.sys). It cannot boot into recovery mode as it is not getting past ~3-5seconds of loading past BIOS. I have no idea why or if it was a result of windows updating/forgetting a driver or upgrading itself (most recent on record was 12-30-2019, before I upgraded). Here's what I've tried:

> Cleared CMOS; errors
> Flashed BIOS to both an earlier and the most recent update; errors
> Rearranged RAM; errors
> Tried 1 RAM vs 2; errors
> Disconnected USBs and all PCI/e's individually; errors
> Ran Windows Installer via USB with HDD; errors
> Ran Windows Installer via USB without SATA plugged in; errors with new codes: same as above but path=CLASSPNP.sys, SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED,
CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED (varies depending on stage, more info if asked)
> Shut off three times for winRE; errors during diagnosis
> Called MS Support; guy suggests using a different computer to load the hard drive

> HDD in alternate PC; runs perfectly fine
> Ran chkdsk (no issues), stopped the Fast STARTUP, renamed storport.sys, system restored to 12-30-2019; errors when returned to new build

At this point I was quite stumped and wondered if it was a hardware issue, so I:

> Tested another HDD with windows on new build; ran perfectly fine (so it shouldn't be dead RAM or CPU issues right?)
> Rebuilt the old PC using the parts I set aside the other day with HDD in question; am still CURRENTLY running on it with no issues (so not GPU, yeah?)

AFAIK, I'm pretty sure it's an issue with drivers (maybe windows updated them overnight and got things a bit confused?) and the new parts clashing but I don't quite know which one or how to find out and fix it/them, as I have no way of knowing which ones to uninstall/update without the new parts being installed (if I'm right, although not too sure since I've never had such a hard time). Maybe I'm completely off track? I would really like to have advice or any suggests and help regarding how I can get the HDD to boot with the new CPU, Mobo, and RAM. Anything is worth trying at this point although it should be noted that I'm only willing to reinstall and wipe as a last resort.

I can provide more info if needed!Your Gskill RAM is not on their QVL list...From the PDF on ASUS I have, it shows that G.Skill F4-3600C18D-16GTZN (the one's i have) is supported (3RD gen pdf). But it not being supported shouldn't allow it to boot any HDD with windows correct? Only the one drive I have seems to be refusing to boot, every other one I've tried doesnt seem to spit the same error code out.Is the HDD that wont boot from another PC ? ?...that would explain it.
Yeah, overnight the HDD seemed to just stop being compatible with the new system (although it's been fine the few days prior). It works everywhere else but with the new parts, and yet the new parts work with every other HDD I have. It's a recent issue between just this one specific HDD in relation to these new parts. Once is awhile a HDD will just not work the way you want. If you value y our time, the best choice is jut buy a replacement HDD that will just work.
Later on you can use the old drives as a backup, if you find out what went wrong.
Right now a starboard SATA HDD under 500GB is a bargain. Amazon,. New-egg and others have them for under $20. Think about it.
Going to take that advice and wipe this drive and buy another. Thanks for the help mates! Post can be closed.

What kind of disk are you REFERING to? CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, etc, etc? You people are REALLY going to have to be more SPECIFIC...

Here are the basics (because knowing me, it'll get confusing fast). I have two computers, an old iMac that still has a DVD port and a new Macbook Air (the one with fingerprint ID).

I have many DVDs (and I'm about to get many Blu RAY discs as well). What I originally wanted to do was to simply get an external player for my Macbook Air. As in, I put a DVD / Blu Ray disc and I play it on my laptop (I also need to get software to play the Blu Ray discs... if anyone has anything they'd recommend, I'm OPEN). I found after lots of research two drives that appeal to me. I just can't DECIDE which one to get (especially because tech is not my thing, and I can't understand 80% of the stuff that they talk about in the reviews.
But, after some thinking (and Googling), I decided that I'd like to upload / copy (rip, I think is the term) my DVDs and Blu Rays to my laptop so that I won't have to carry around the drive every time I want to watch a movie. This is where the old iMac (which still works) comes in.

Basically, can I use my iMac to upload the DVDs and Blu Rays to my desktop / iTunes / whatnot (see, I have no idea what I'm talking about here)? Like, is it possible to get the DVDs / Blu Rays as files on the computer and be able to watch them without the discs? Do I need any software to do this (and is it free)?

And then, would I be able to send over all the files to my Macbook Air so that I could watch them there, which would mean that I would never even need to get an external drive to begin with?

I'd do what Geek suggested. I got 491gb of movies that I've ripped to my drive as well as my tv stuff and converted them to either avi or mp4 (over a period of time obviously). I got my external hdd for 40 bucks its a 2tb drive. Recently I bought online another 2tb pen drive for just under 5 bucks AND IT ACTUALLY WORKS lol. Couldn't believe my luck. So yeah I wouldn't bother buying an actual disk drive to carry about with you tbh. It's bulky and you need to change the movie every time. With an external hdd you can just go through your folders and chop and change a movie or put them on a playlist and let them roll through them in the background while you do other things.Another possibility is to setup a media server such as the free Plex server. I use Plex and have 10TB of movies and TV shows that I can access on my laptop, tablet or phone via the internet. As long as I have an internet connection, I can watch one of the movies (or TV shows) in my collection.

I checked under my device manager and it shows an exclamation point next to "Multimedia Controller" under sound, video, and game controllers [this is on XP].

When I pick properties it says manufacturer unknown. Then location says PCI Slot 2 (PCI bus 0, device 15, function 0) - not sure what that is really.

Well, I have a big book of cds for drivers, and I ran them all through and it NEVER recognized any of them as the correct driver. I don't even know what it is exactly or what driver to get or what WEBSITE to go to... Im clueless.

You see, I had Sims 2 installed and it ran slow, but it ran [I only pass the req'd processor speed by 100, but I can't buy a new one I doubt it since I have no clue how you would install it - and I dont have the money to pay for an expensive DELL or something]. I recently redid the computer - erased it all and put XP back in, and now the Sims 2 will begin to load, show the icon in the taskbar, then freeze completely. Might be causing that since it worked fine before filled with junk.

You may have to install MOTHERBOARD drivers in order to activate the Multimedia Controller properly.
Well I figured I would just take the thing apart and hope I remembered what went where =) Turns out that the thing it was talking about was some sort of tv to monitor or vice versa sort of deal. I found the manufacturer's label, went to their site, and after a hard time I found the driver.

So, I redid the computer again to fix anything I messed up, I put in all the new updated video graphics and sound drivers. Now everything looks to be in good shape.

Oddly enough, the Sims 2 still does the same freeze deal. Why? I couldn't tell you. Maybe the service pack 2 messed it up - but I coulda swore I had it installed before as well.

As for The Sims 2, contact EA technical support. They are better able to help you than I am. Explain them what you have done in order to run into this problem.

I just purchased a dvd game and it is not recognized by my dvd drive. all other dvd are read except the 2 that came with the game. Just YESTERDAY I did a fresh install of windows xp and my dvd drive did not come with the computer. the dvd drive is a cyberdrive DM166D.

In a .NET 2.0 C# application I use the following code to detect the operating SYSTEM platform:

string os_platform = System.Environment.OSVersion.Platform.T oString();
This returns "Win32NT". The PROBLEM is that it returns "Win32NT" even when RUNNING on Windows Vista 64-bit.

Is there any other method to KNOW the correct platform (32 or 64 bit)?

I'm at my wit's end and desperately need HELP. Let me know if I need to add any information as I've never ACTUALLY posted in a forum like this before, I've always tried to solve the issues myself.

This all started when I downloaded a new game that said it could not launch because it was missing several .dlls I downloaded them and put them in System32 or SysWoW64 based on their BIT size. This worked at first but then I started getting an "Access Denied" message when trying to place things in System32 even though I was admin. I searched for info on this and discovered that I needed to disable UAC and make myself owner of the folder if that didn't work, so I did both of those. Weirdly enough, System32 still said "access Denied" when I tried to change permissions, but I could place the .dlls in it after that. after I finished installing the .dlls I tried to run the game and got a new error.

"The procedure entry point CreateEventW could not be located in the dynamic link library api-ms-win-core-synch-l1-2-0.dll"

But this was only the beginning of my problems. I ended up restarting my COMPUTER alittle while later and when it booted back up I had a slew of ERRORS thrown in my face. Most of them were all related to

"Application failed to start, mscoreei.dll failed to load" This prevented nearly any application from running. my AMD catalyst control center, Adobe, Steam, Discord, etc. I jumped into several solutions. I ran an SFC scan and that found errors to fix. I downloaded and repaired Microsoft 4.8 Net Framework, I downloaded the .dll and tried to replace it. Eventually I was able to run things like Steam and Discord again, but now I'm stuck. The Catalyst Control Center won't launch, and most of my newer games, such as Monster Hunter World, will no longer launch, but my older games, like Magicka, will work. I tried to reinstall my graphics drivers, used msconfig to safe-boot, and things were still broken. Most programs affected will begin to launch, then simply turn off, usually without even saying they crashed. Please let me know how I can fix this.

Recently I keep getting the error "The proxy server is refusing connections" while trying to use Firefox. I encountered similar errors on Chrome and IE. The problem seems to go go away on its own temporarily for about ~10minutes every so often without me doing anything and then comes back again. I ran a full scan with both MSE and malwarebytes. The MSE scan did not find any threats while malwarebytes found about 20 things which I quarantined. However, this did not solve the issue.

I am still able to play online games and connect to PROGRAMS such as Spotify and Steam.

I am able to get around this issue by turning on Hotspotshield, but it severely slows down my INTERNET.

So my best guess here is one of those were ADWARE and messed with some proxy settings. The fact the malwarebytes has removed it/them will not fix any settings that it changed previously. So lets try set you back to defaults with a quick walk through. RIGHT click on windows start button\control panel\network and internet\internet options\Connections\LAN Settings. Check to enable "Automatically Detect settings". UNCHECK all other options. Then i want you to open firefox in the top right corner you see 3 lines click those. Then click on options. Scroll to the very bottom and you see "Network Settings" click the settings button and the only thing that should be selected in there is use system proxy settings. All other check boxes or info boxes should be unchecked or blank. Once this is done click on start menu type cmd and HIT the enter key. Type these command in the cmd windows iv added " quotation marks but please dont include these when typing the commands. "ipconfig /flushdns" and press enter then type" ipconfig /release" and hit enter and finally "ipconfig /renew" and hit enter. I have a nvidia GEFORCE MX 100/200 64MB pci vid card and I heard that using the nvidia driver ver 29.42 is better than any other driver for this card, I'm currently using the latest driver off the nvidia site which works fine, but would using an older driver boost performance?matt.......How about giving it a try and then you decide which is better.

Did you try assigning it a different drive letter? Perhaps uninstalling it from the Hardware management menu and resetting your computer will allow it to be redected by Windows.Yes, I have tried this but it is still not recognized?

Was the Windows 10 an upgrade from Windows 7 or a clean install? If it was a clean install how did you setup support for dual GRAPHICS as it appears the Laptop is using the integrated VIDEO not the graphics card. Also There doesn't seem to be support for Windows 10 , Easy Display Manager which you need for the display switching. REALLY the Laptop isn't suitable to run Windows 10.Thanks a lot

Hmm i'm have some problem with my hardware... even right now the ASUS itself.....almost 2 months haven't reply me yet .

My problem is my cd-rom doesn't work at all or doesn't appear at my computer even though it ALREADY install there since 1 and a half year.

The troubleshoot is the 'Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)'

Upon Google searches, it appears that several people at least have had similar experiences, none of their solutions are working for me.
I've had compromised email accounts recently so I decided to beef up my security a little. Using "HP health check" application, I was recommended to update bios. It seemed to have been successful, until my next reboot the following day. At that point, windows hangs at the spinning circle while booting. My goto for software issues is to clean install windows (I recently installed a new HDD so I wasnt worried about DATA loss too much). It worked FINE for the first few boots (installing system updates) and after the last update I did, it starts to hang again.
At this point I'm kind of lost. I've tried to access bios RESTORE with no luck, i reset the CMOS with no luck, tried command prompt fixes from YouTube, still nothing. I can get it into SAFE mode if I can do anything from there. I just ordered a couple of flash drives to see if I can maybe try to reflash the BIOS image?
I have one flash drive on hand, with my OS image on it. I may try to load another OS image to it and see if anything else will run. Im going to try gparted first, as I should have set up partitions ANYWAY. Then I'll put Ubuntu on one of the partitions. Might also try making a Windows to Go drive and see what I get out of it.
I'm going to keep playing, but if anyone has any ideas I'm fully open to them.

After a recent CMOS battery reset, both my LAN and Wi-fi adapter have failed to work. Including a Wifi USB which I tried. The WIERD thing is that the PC recogniced the parts, yet can't run them, stating that there is a issue with drivers. This is wierd, since CMOS battery resets aren't supposed to delete current drivers.
Every driver I install do not fix the issue, everything from the LAN drivers to the wireless adapter drivers. I might also add that USB wifi adapters don't work too. I'm suspecting a possible motherboard failure (perhaps ESD during the CMOS reseting), yet everything works fine except the internet.
I have also checked that the ONBOARD WLAN is enabled in the BIOS.

Of course, Motherboards aren't directly cheap and I would love any possible advice.

Never heard of a CMOS battery re-set...i usually just replace them when weak.No yellows at all, which is the wierd part. All adapters are listed in Device Manager, yet not functional. I have installed etc drivers for my wireless adapter from asus official website (https://www.asus.com/Networking/PCEAC56/HelpDesk_Download/) and LAN adapter from Realteks official website. Nothing works. The very same drivers worked for me before the BIOS reset (via removing the CMOS battery).

After altering the memory frequency in the BIOS, the BIOS became impossible to access while booting (Monitor became pitch black). So I decided to remove the CMOS battery in order to reset the BIOS settings. Which in hindsight seems like a bad decision. Actually reverting the BIOS to default is a GOOD idea...since the mem timings didnt work...in future you can do this while in BIOS by pressing F10 and selecting set BIOS to defaults.
It's possible the dongle has failed...just had 1 go bad here...borrow 1 from a neighbor...you'll know right away.
As far as the Realtek i would still re-install the network drivers from the MBoard manuf. site...not Realtek

Keep us posted.I just updated the BIOS with the latest Asus drivers, yet with no avail. I have also tried with inserting a Wi-Fi USB, which didn't work, receiving the same driver issues as the adapters.

Alas, buying a new motherboard seems unescapable by this point. Can you use the Ethernet connection?
Do you have another computer?
Do you have a smart phone that can get to the Internet?
Do you have a working Wi-Fi in your house?

There are ways y to tie a smart phone and your PC together as a temporary test to see what does work.

Ethernet connection does not work, as the PC refuses to run the functional LAN adapter. A similar story regarding the wireless adapter and the external wireless USB which I connected.

I have MULTIPLE devices in the house with a functional internet connection, both wireless or by cable; including a second PC.
Since I do not have BlueTooth on the PC, nor own a WiFi repeater (which would probably not work), I tried the USB tether-method which you listed. Sadly, it did not do much better than the adapters, with the exact same issue. I did a run a WINDOWS Diagnosis which gave me "Windows couldn’t automatically bind the IP protocol stack to the network adapter".

But to answer your QUESTION - there might very well be drivers on the HP site that are NEWER. When you try to update drivers VIA Device Manger, Windows only looks for WHQL drivers. Those are drivers certified by Microsoft as being COMPATIBLE with most hardware. It is not unusual for Microsoft to bastardize drivers provided to them by the OEM for certification in order to make them widely compatible. In doing so, they may disable certain new features introduced by the OEM even though those features are why the driver was released in the first place. Personally, I've never worried about certification. And if your system is an HP computer you can certainly feel comfortable DOWNLOADING drivers from the HP website INSTEAD of through device manager.

But again - the best advice I can offer the typical user is to NOT update drivers unless there is a specific reason or need to do so.Thanks, patio, good response for sure.

Sometimes after having my computer on for a while and the audio has been working, it suddenly stops working. And so far restarting the computer has got it to start working again. But I'm wondering what is causing this problem. When I go to device manager it says I have "High Definition Audio Device" and "Realtek High Definition Audio". I'm not sure why there is two - does it require two audio drivers? Why do I have two? I bought these speakers AWHILE back and the brand name is blackweb. I'm not sure if the speakers required their own drivers which are separate from my sound card's drivers. Both of the audio drivers say they're working fine, but I don't know what the problem would be if not the audio drivers.I'd test the system RAM to make sure you dont have a minor memory issue that hits a flawed address that causes the issue. Memtest86 is GOOD test for this.

In addition to my sound turning off, my browsers are starting to slow down and even freeze up (stop responding) at times. This is a refurbished computer I bought from Walmart's website a few months ago and everything loaded really FAST when I first got it even with many tabs open at time. I recently purchased a refurbished HP 8300 desktop pc with Windows 10 64 bit O/S (2004).

I am using the USB wi-fi adapter from my old Win 7 32 bit pc but there are spells when the internet connection keeps dropping whilst my phone is FINE.

It’s a Realtek RTL8192CU LAN 802 11n USB 2.

In DEVICE Manager it says Driver Version 1027.4.0630.2015 supplied by MICROSOFT. There are 2 driver FILES listed and they both start C:\Windows\system32. Does that mean 32 bit?

Forgive my IGNORANCE but can somebody educate me as to where Win 10 got these drivers from and can I download a better driver from Realtek site. I looked but can’t find anything.

add the above to notepad and save it as whatever you want it named as such as movedata.bat with .bat file extension and this will copy all contents from c:\folder1 to d:\folder2. Make sure the batch file when run it is not located at c:\folder1 or else you could have an issue due to the file being open. That being said all data that is at c:\folder1 should be not opened by any applications to avoid problems with file in USE during copy.

If folder1 and folder2 were just for example purposes but the PATH is different you can change the instruction to those specific paths; HOWEVER if your GOING to target a folder that has files in use you will run into problems!SPAM Removed...

I got a Dell OptiPlex GX110 with Windows 98 pre-installed. The hard drive died so I replaced it with a new one that was the same model and got a new install disk for Windows 98. The sound worked perfectly fine before but now the driver is missing and the COMPUTER can't recover it. I'm using an onboard soundcard, the computer says it is a PCI communication device. The color options also seemed to have gotten messed up, I can now only go to 16 colors even though before it could go to 256 colors.Call Dell for the factory retore disc which includes drivers...You will need to load the drivers from the Dell website, yes they still have drivers for your computer running Windows 98. If you have another computer with a CD burner it may be easier to make up the driver install disk to a cd disk. Windows 98 will not access usb pendrives without drivers loaded.

The Dell drivers when downloaded are Zip FILES which self extract to a folder called R then a number. to make then meaningful rename the folders as CHIPSET, Network, etc

Meow... my computer has gone dumb. It can't MAKE SOUNDS anymore. For some reason, the little speaker that is NORMALLY on the toolbar on the bottom of the screen is gone and won't come back. This happened after I plugged a joystick into my sound card...so I figured that was the problem. But after I removed the joystick the sound is still gone. I'm guessing I may have also accidentally deleted the driver at some point. I tried going to the site (soundblaster.com) to download a new one but they only have updates for currently existing drivers and no actual drivers. I'm not even sure if that's even the problem. I opened my computer to check if my sound card was loose and it is not. No damage either.

The updates usually contain all the necessary files. You donot require a previous version.

As for the Joystick, I believe you have to turn off the computer before connecting any periphals that are not USB, you may damage your ports.:'( I've tried everything I can think of and still my sound will not work. My computer says that all my sound hardware is working properly and all drivers are in place but it still won't work. I opened my box and saw no damage or anything on the sound card. Don't know what to do... It's been a LONG time... no sound... it's like I've gone deff!Search for a file called starter.exe and launch it. It is a SB file that launches the mixer for SB. as stated in another thread, I've recently formatted my hard disks. Now, there was a partition on it for a D drive, and the system no longer reads the space it used to have. In other words, I lost 3 gigs of space, and only have the space that was on the C drive to work with, but thats only part of the problem...

after the REINSTALLING, my colour settings were messed, put back to 16 COLOURS. Before, I had true Colour 32 bit and 16 bit. Basically, my machine cannot DISPLAY pictures properly. and now, because I tried to initiale the display I had before (NVIDIA) it says the driver wasnt configured for this architecture. the only WAY I can start my computer is in safe mode, but it wont let me make any changes to the display problem. As for your harddisk, if you use a program such as Fdisk, which comes with Windows bootdiskettes, you may be able to delete the partition (If /Fdisk can see it) and create new ones.

yamaha That would depend on the soundcard installed.

I suggest you take a look around on the Yamaha website (I know it's a horrible website to navigate through) to see if there are any pointers as to where you can obtain the name.

I also suggest you E-mail technical support and have them point you to the right download location.

You can usually obtain the name by GOING to DEVICE Manager.

The hardware (internal card) is in and the hardware is found by win98se and we have the driver for the modem but windows keeps coming up with "insert Lucent winmodem installation disk" which we don't have as the tech guy who installed the moden originally has long gone and my pal has never had the installation disk.

After shifting his comp this problem started. "Modem not found or already in use."

Many thanks dl65, but we have already drivers for the modem, it's the "installation disk" problem we can't get around. We've even got a GENERIC driver from Agere, who have taken over Lucent and will try that too. I wonder if it got burnt up in a thunderstorm. Would you get a message saying "cannot detect modem" or would you get a message saying "modem damaged by thunderstorm"? Just wondering. cheers mcGo to My Computer > Properties > Device MANAGER > Network Adapters then remove the the device (OBVIOUSLY, not the hardware)... restart the windows. It is very obvious that the modem would still be in the Control Panel unless of course you will remove its driver using the Add/Remove Program in Control Panel...

Shutdown the computer, then remove the hardware device... Turn on the computer without the network device... That's it!

But wait, if you want to use the network device, then again... insert the network device in the slot alloted for the hardware... if this time the Windows did not detect your modem, there is a great chance and possibility that your modem is already defective or you hadn't inserted the modem very well.... If the windows detect the modem... then locate the driver that you had...

I SUGGEST you go into the BIOS and see if your harddrive is PROPERLY configured.

It may have been damaged or the BIOS may have been RESET due to the computer being improperly shut down due to the power line being cut.

I Cannot find the SE or XP driver for this 29", 26" viewable monitor made in about 1998 on the NEC SITE or anywhere else for that matter.That monitor came out in '99. You do not need a driver for it as it is plug and play. It should have on screen management ACCESSED from the buttons on the front. It has 4 or 5 different INPUTS, so make sure you are properly connected. It was designed to be a presentation monitor with its best image at 1024x768 resolution.you should contact NEC technical support to see if they can supply you with monitor drivers.

Plug and Play does not always work as efficient, once I installed my monitor drivers Windows allowed me to select 85Hz rather than 75Hz about which it first said was 'incapable' of doing.
