Solve : E Drive?

Answer»

Ok here goes. My laptop basically crapped the bed but the harddrive is still usable. I WANTED to run the laptop hd as an external one on my desktop. So I went to a computer store and they told me i needed a usb to ide adaptor. I bought it and brought it home plugged in the adaptor to the laptop hd and to my desktops usb. With it being plugged in the desktop should have created an E drive for me to veiw the contents of the laptop hd but i got nothing. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong or even how to fix this?

Any help is appreciatedThis USB to IDE adapter -- does it have its own power supply, (probably some kind of wall WART) or does it take its power from the USB socket?

If the latter, the laptop USB socket may not have ENOUGH current available to run the hard drive.

The hard drive -- do you hear it spin up?

Have you removed any jumpers or caddies that are on the hard disk at the connector end?

How do you know for sure that disk is "usable"?

BigDog - WELCOME to the CH forums.

What's the operating system in use on your desktop?

try to look at the computer management on your if the usb is enable.I use XP on both the desktop and laptop HD's. The adaptor CAME with a power supply but I was told by the technicians at the computer store that would only be needed if i plugged another desktop HD into the adaptor. I really dont know anything about jumpers or how to disconnect any of them. The laptop HD was tested on a friends laptop after my laptop crapped and it booted up just fine. Can you give details of the ide/usb adapter - make/model etc so we know what we're trying to deal with - an image would also help.

Thanks

Solve : Updating Driver?

Answer»

So I'm UPDATING my Nvidia GeForce GO 6400 driver from the device manager. Then this window called Files Needed comes up, and it says the following:

The file 'nv4_mini.sys' on WINDOWS driver cabinet is needed.
Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.

Anything I can do to fix this problem?

Point it to the directory where the new driver you've downloaded is located.I didn't download anything. I simply clicked on update driver from the device manager.

I just tried uninstalling and reinstalling via the device manager. The uninstall worked, but I'm STILL having the same problem when reinstalling. Also, I'm just clicking on reinstall from the device manager page. I haven't downloaded anything. At least I don't think I have. You can't update a driver without first downloading a driver update.
Since your graphics card is a GeForce Go I assume this is a laptop.
In that case you need to download any driver updates from the manufacturer of the laptop.
Also keep in mind updating drivers from device manager is an ineffective way to do so...it normally only checks for updated Windows drivers.
It's always best to go straight to the source which would be the manuf. website as Deerpark suggested...

I was given a computer by my friend and naturally I reformatted it to get rid of all the crap. The reformat went fine install windows, fine, but here's where I run into issues. I've been to the HP website and I've tried downloading drivers but it fails every time just WONT connect to the download, plus I don't think it's what I'm looking for ANYWAYS. PLEASE HELP ME!! I've been trying all day to find the right drivers or even a driver that can get me hooked up to the net but I come up dry everytime if anyone has any info on this at all please let me know.

Once, you have all drivers installed, you can proceed to next step. There is a seller on ebay who sells virtually all drivers. Most are pretty cheap (5-6 dollars.) Good luck to you.Later on, you might want to back up the drivers with a program like Driver Magician Lite...Thanks for the link pcsourcepoint, Driver Magician looks like a very USEFUL app Quote from: traci903 on April 01, 2008, 10:30:54 PM

Solve : dvd burner drive?

Answer»

I have a Dell w/ Win xp pro with dvd/cd burner. It WORKS fine as LONG as I view everything on my PC.
How can I get the video's to play on other dvd players?
On my Dell, it only offers quick formating on dvd-r, dvd+r and cd-r
after I'm done recording, I go through and FINALIZE through the "MAKE compatible" option they offer.
The burner is supposed to support dvd-r, dvd+r, dvd-rw, cd-r
When I try and play it on the dvd player, I get an error message stating the disc is incompatible
Appreciate any help/suggestions you have1. What burning program are you using?
2. Check standalone DVD player manual what type of DVDs it'll accept.http://www.filehippo.com/download_dvdshrink/If your standalone DVD player supports the DVD's and CDR's you are burning, you need to close/finalise the disks before they will play on a standalone DVD player. I use Nero Burning Rom and find it the best burning prog to use . So it maybe the burning software you are using, try something else.....

Solve : Driver / CD ROM Does not Play XP Pro?

Answer»

I just formatted my PC with XP Pro. The CDRW Drive was not playing anything for months, it did work at one time. although it appeared in Device Manager and said " Device is WORKING Properly" so I tried a format & reinstall.

I formatted using a Boot Floppy, then did a clean INSTALL of XP PRO, using the same CDRW Drive and it WORKED fine, during the XP install.

Once XP PRO was installed, I was back to the same situation, with the Drive not Playing anything, yet it just installed XP from the same Drive. I have tried downloading drivers, but nothing seems to get it working in XP, it says its there in Device Manager & working Properly, how do i get this Philips CDRW 4800 Drive to work in XP PRO.

Please Help!! I'm at my witts end, I know it has to be something simple, but what is the solution? Hope someone can help me, ThanksDownload and try CDBurnerXPPro and tell us what happens.

GoHereCDBurnerXPPro that I downloaded from your link street1, says .net framework needs to be installed, will this resolve the issue or is that only needed to install CDBurnerXPPro Software???What says that?Ok I downloaded .net framework and installed the CDBurnerXPPro from that link, but still no joy, CDRW Drive is still not reading any CD's in XP ProTry one of these:
1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
or...
2. http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip
or...
3. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.OK, Broni, I've tried all that you have said and it's still the same, the drive, was detected after I deleted - ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel) and rebooted. But the CD RW Drive is still not playing anything in Win XP Pro, although it shows up as Drive F: in Windoze, I even added that .reg key, but still no joy

Do you have any other suggestions that might help, thanks for your help Quote

in Windoze, I even added that .reg key
You're suppose to remove, not add registry keys. You gave me the link for CDGONE.ZIP to add the registry KEY, or did it remove keys? Anyway I did what you said and still no joy Right click the drive in Device Manager and remove it...you will get a warning message ...ignore it and re-boot.
See if the drive works now...if not move it to another machine to confirm it has passed on...Quote

I already tried that, no luck, the drive works, patio because I used it to reinstall XP Pro, but once XP is reinstalled it wont read any disks even tho it there as Drive F:\. Is there a way to add it to the Autoexec.bat or is that obsolete in Win XP PRO??

This is my friends PC who is having this prob, now thinking about it he had the same prob with another CD Drive in this same machine, (even tho I know that drive worked ok too) so we replaced it with this one and it worked fine, but that was some time ago now and SINCE the last two formats it shows up but wont read any disks in XP... even tho it allowed me to reinstall the system with this Drive, very strange it then wont read any disks now

Any ideas ?? What else could be causing this issue, do you know please help, thanksThe only way to check the drive is to try it in another computer.

Solve : ide detected on laptop?

Answer»

I have a hp compaq nx 9030 laptop with 512 ram and in bios it reads 480.computer turns on and I see the hp logo but after that blank screen. It started when,my hardrive stared making a loud spinning niose and shortly after the operating sysrem was gone on my 40 gig hd I bought used.It says no HD device detected and in bios it shows no Hd = Sounds like your "hardrive" (hard drive) is broken. You need to get another one. Hope you backed up your data, if you didn't it is probably gone.

i did get another hard drive in fact it is the old one that has worked with the lap top before,it is like the bios doesnt even detect a hard drive in the computer could it have been caused by a virus do i need to flash the bios in desprate to get this laptop back up and running any help is greatly appreciated.Flashing the BIOS on a laptop is a good way to create an expensive paperweight...
You need to try a new hard drive...not an old one that used to work.sorry it took so long, been real busy and had to get the funds for the hard drive. ok it is STILL doing the same thing it is not detecting a hard drive when you are in the bios and run the hard disk self test it comes back saying estimated test time : Diagnostics not supported then when you hit enter again you get test status: no ide device. the hard drive is spinning when laptop is TURNED on hp SPLASH screen quickly appears then a flashing curser in upper left hand corner blinks and the message operating system not found flashes.

it is a phoenix bios ver f.16Did you get a Compaq Recovery CD with this laptop ? ?
You may have to use it...unfortantly i got the laptop from a garage sale 3 yrs ago and i DIDNT get any software You may have to search online then...i believe HP owns Compaq now so start there...

Give the below link a look.

http://www.techexcess.net/hp-application-and-driver-recovery-dvd-374772-001-recovery-software.aspxi have recovery disk and when i put it in and booted from the cd-rom i got a message that said

"no hard disk hit any key to continue"

is it possible something is not connected internally ?

can anyone help me? Sounds quite possible....

Also new hard drives need to be managed... they dont just get picked up as being there straight away...

Compaq solutions can be found on the Hewlett Packard website, type in the make and model of your machine, and gander for the manual

Good Luck

Solve : driver for universal serial bus (USB) controller 1.1?

Answer»

Hi Everyone

In Device Manager I am getting the message that I am missing a driver for Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller 1.1. I am running under Win. XP, on a computer with a Soyo P4VSA Motherboard with an INTEL Pentium 4 (1,800 Mh) CPU (SOCKET 478). I can not find any such driver. Can anyone HELP?

It should be included in the MBoard drivers on the CD that came with the motherboard...
If you don't have that CD travel to Soyo's site and DLoad and re-install the MBoard drivers...Here you go:

http://www.soyo.com/content/Downloads/155/&c=27&p=82&l=English

Download and install all the drivers (Don't update the BIOS unless you know exactly what you're doing inside out and back to front)

Solve : ppl, pls help!! an annoying prob with my sound(card?)?

Answer»

hi members! this is my first post, here's the deal:
my foolishness led me to buy a p4 system in exchange of my celron1.7(in perfectly running condition) in very weird circumstances.... anyway, being excited, forgot to ask bout the manual or the motherboard utilities cd!!! and bla blabla...

ok guys, after replaceing the SMPS, CPU fan, ond other stuff, i got it running and now i realise there's no sound. i am seriously out'o cash after the unplesant surprises this pc threw at me, now i hope this is just a s/w glitch.

now seriously to d point dudes n dudettes-> on board sound card, everything seems to be fine in the device manager, but no sound at all. i've downloaded i845 chipset driver, but that's all i could. i could not find any other drivers and some others would not install. dosen't windows xp loaded with some or the other drivers for the devices? there is a display card in there, which works fine w/o a seprate driver.

control panel->sound speech whatever->Sound and audio devices
it SAYS no audio device. Now that baffles me!!
i've tried installing countless drivers. but i can't figure out who da *censored* is the manufacturer of the bloody device!!!

cud it be that the jumpers on the mthrboard prevent the card from functioning?
i don't really know how to configre 'em as i have no manual.
pls let me know if there is a way to test an on borad device somehow.

Please help people! i can't watch movies- no i can, but i can't hear anything!
besides, i have tons op mp3s on my hdd. not being able to listen to them is big pain the backside.
and by the way sorry for such a long post, but that felt really good u kno!The manufacturer should have the manuals available for DLoad at their website...

That being said DLoad and install Everest Home from majorgeeks.com ....
Run a report and save it as a text file.
Cut and paste the Computer Summary and Post it here as we have no idea of what hardware we are dealing with as it isn't in your Post.

Let us know.oops, forgot to mention the manufacturer's name. it's biostar, model M7TDB.
and i don't think it's website is of any help.
if u cud find anything there, pls let me know!
By the way, i did run everest,
the report is attached.
i tried to install a driver for that ancient ASUS card, it returned a weird error saying 'could not detect asus chip on this system'. now that's strange, coz i downloaded the precise driver for NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 M64 card. but anyway, what is a display card doing in an AGP slot? i'm quite SURE it ain't an accelerator...

pls go thru the report, really appreciate the help!

[recovering space - attachment deleted by admin]please god!! somebody reply...
anybody?? mr. patio???I think this is the driver but, you must first uninstall the
present drivers in the control panel system devices
reboot then, install these.

Don't forget to read the ReadMe file.

TryHere-ScrollDownThePageuuh i had downloaded a NUMBER of drivers, this one turns out to be one of them,
but i'll try unsinstalling my PREVIOUS drivers and then installing it...oh no, which of the 7 devices shown in the sound and audio devices PROPERTIES menu should i try to uninstall?Look for something that relates to "...sound device..." within Device Manager.

Alan <>< k, i'll try that, but i just discovered another massive problem. i have 2 usb ports, one of which isn't working. when i connect my usb mouse into the faulty one, the laser turns on. but the cursor dosen't respond. a usb mass storage device doesen't even register!
this is crazy, i have only one spare usb port, which dosen't work!!!!
any usb drivers out there? or can i change the power settings of the faulty one?in the device manager, under the Sound Video and Game controllers menu, only the following devices are present:
Audio codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy video Capture devices
Media Controll Devices
MPU-401 compatible MIDI Device
Standard Game Port
Video Codecs

which one are you refering to?
i assure you, the sound card is there. it's onboard.
any way we can test it for faults or damages?

Solve : Xfx GeForce 8600GT Problems...?

Answer»

Hey Guys,

I've been messing with this video card for the last few hours. I have an xfx GeForce 8600 GT 512mb video card. I meet all the system requirements for it aswell.

Anyway I finially have the new card in the computer and its working (displaying on the screen.) And the ONBOARD integrated adapter is disabled (VIA BIOS.)
But when I try to install the new driver software it says that "The VGA detected seems not an xfx product" then it says goto the nvidia website and get the driver. Which I did and when I tried to install the downloaded driver, it installed some files in 'C:\NVIDIA' and proceeded to say

"The NVIDIA setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit."

So after this I try it again (after the C:\NVIDIA files were installed.) And it says this now...

"The setup up detected that the operating system in use is now Windows Vista [32-bit]. This setup program and it's associated drivers are designed to work on Windows Vista [32-bit]. The installation will be terminated."

Any ideas on what's going on, I'm really getting frustrated here?

Also everytime I restart my computer it automatically installs this driver...

"Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) PCI Express Root Port - 27D0"

Even if I disable/uninstall it and try to install the software provided and restart, it doesnt work. The computer just continues to install it on startup before I can even install off of the provided CD.

Also when I goto the DEVICE manager it says the following.

"This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)

If you WANT to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system."

All Help Is Appreciated.
Thanks.Sounds to me like you are attempting to install it with the 64bit drivers...this will cause those errors.Quote from: Drew IZA on May 21, 2008, 01:29:17 AM

Solve : XP and Vista Printer Driver issues?

Answer»

I've read a bunch of posts on this problem, but none of them are answering my issue, so I apologize if I missed it.

I just bought an HP Pavillion laptop with Vista Home Premium SP1 installed.
I am also running a Compaq Presario laptop with XP Home SP2 installed.

I am running a Lexmark X5270 AIO printer which is attached to my XP laptop via USB with the XP driver installed on the XP MACHINE and has no problems.

I've downloaded the Vista printer driver to the Vista machine and can print from the Vista machine when it's attached to the printer via the USB.

However, I'm trying to set up my Vista computer to print wirelessly to my printer as it's connected to my XP machine. It detects the printer on the XP machine, but it wants to install a different driver. When I SELECT the printer, it says that I must install the driver (of which I already have the Vista version on my Vista computer). When I click to "download driver", it FREEZES until I stop the program.

Can anyone point me in the RIGHT direction to make the printer work wirelessly from my Vista machine through my XP machine? I'm sure it's an easy step I'm missing, I just can't see it! Thanks!Uninstall Vista Driver and instead force XP driver down the Vistas throat....Generally NT drivers are backwards compatible, so Vista may blat about the driver not being signed by MS, allow anyways.

Now you have 2 systems with same driver, so there is no need for translation, there is a passthrough of the print TASK from the spooler service of the one system to the spooler service of the other and it should print without the blat from now on.

I had an issue like this with a Windows 2000 File Server/Print Server and Windows XP and Vista client systems, fix was to force XP and Vista systems to take Windows 2000 Pro drivers for the shared laser printer.

It generally works better when the shared printer is connected to a newer OS than the clients or same. You can generally force it to be same via installation of prior NT printer drivers.

Hope this works for you as it has for me!

Solve : Can't Access BIOS?

Answer»

Not sure where I should post this, so I'm posting it here. Anyway, I have an Intel D945GCNL MOBO, with Intel NL94510J.86A BIOS. The problem is I can't access it. It worked fine a couple of months ago when I was running Windows Vista Home Premium. The stupid computer crashed when I attempted to INSTALL a wireless NIC. I couldn't get it back up and running for the longest time. Well the other day I did get it to work again with Windows Xp, and it runs fine. The problem is like I said, I can't access the BIOS.

Now before anyone tells me to press this key or that, I've tried them all. Besides that, the key should be F2 because that's what it says to press, it just doesn't do anything. I've also tried clearing the CMOS by moving the jumper and taking the battery out, and even flashing the BIOS again. Nothing works, and I'm stumped. I guess it's not that much of a problem, but I like all aspects of my computer in working order, so any ideas would be welcome. Thanks to everyone in advance.

What kind of keyboard are you using on the computer?

I've seen USB CONNECTION keyboards not work in the BIOS (though I've seen some work). I've had regular PS2 connection keyboards not work because they seem to need some kind of Windows drivers loaded before they will work.

I always try to keep around at least one old-fashioned, plain kind of keyboard that I know I can plug in and it won't require any extra drivers to work, just for those times I need to access the BIOS.

Your motherboard has PS/2 connections for the keyboard.

Hey, even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while...

Sorry I haven't gotten back lately, been out of state to my brother's wedding. Anyway, I'm using a Mircosoft wireless keyboard. A Mutimedia Keyboard 1.0A to be exact. The POINT is that I used the same one before when I set the computer up with Vista. Somehow this all started when the computer crashed and I tried to install XP on it instead, and it wouldn't detect any DRIVES. I used a boot CD and ran some different diagnostic software, such as ones you would find on Hiren's Boot CD. Anyway, I'd have to check, but one program said it detected my drive. That's when I attempted to reinstall XP, and for some reason it worked. Though now like I mentioned I can't access the BIOS anymore. I can try a different keyboard, though I don't think that's the problem. Though I guess that's why it's called troubleshooting.Yes, get a good old-fashioned keyboard that doesn't depend upon drivers being loaded first, and I bet you'll be able to get to the BIOS. Aegis, you are probably 100% right about the keyboard deal, though I don't have any extra lying around. However, I did solve my problem, and now I FEEL stupid. Apparently my keyboard has a F Lock key on it. So, I pressed it and tried again, and it worked. All that frustration over one little key. Thanks for everybody who helped me with this.No worries -- I have a keyboard with a similar F lock -- it's goten me in trouble in other ways -- I didn't think of the lock, because it's not the keyboard I'm using right now. Thank you for posting your problem resolution -- it always helps to see / learn the fix for a problem.

Solve : DVD Problem - Just intalled Vista.. NOW FIXED?

Answer»

I have performed a clean install of Windows Vista Ultimate (OEM) on my Toshiba Equium laptop, getting rid of the XP Home edition.

I have a problem PLAYING DVD's in Windows Media Player and Media Center, i'm encountering the following message:

'Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card .' 'Try installing an updated DRIVER for your video card.'

How do I proceed from here? Device manager SAYS that the drivers for IDE/ATA Adapi controllers are okay - i'm not sure if they are.. Please help!Get VLC Player: http://www.videolan.org/Thanks for the reply, great DVD player - I have installed it and works a treat, it still hasn't fixed my problem though - i'm still getting the above error on Media Center and WMP.. any IDEAS??Installed tiny free program called DVD43 - awesome, problem fixed. In addition allows me to play multi region DVD's, copies, etcQuote

i'm still getting the above error on Media Center and WMP.. any ideas??
I don't even want to go there. WMP is a crappy tool, and I don't use it.
I'm glad, you fixed things up.

Solve : Out of date drivers?

Answer»

Some of my drivers are out of date where can I get up to date drivers to replace them. It's generally best to go to the manufacturers' sites for drivers. For example, if you need to update an NVIDIA video card, then STOP by nVidia's site. Do you already know which drivers you want to update? Also, if COMPUTER works OK, leave it alone. Thanks both, the pc is working ok so I will leave it aloneQuote from: Broni on May 21, 2008, 08:33:46 PM

Also, if computer works OK, leave it alone.

Very sound ADVICE. If it ain't broke, don't FIX it.

Solve : Useful Driver Tool to share with everyone?

Answer»

I am not soliciting this product, but wanted to share it with other techs who frequent this forum in case they are not aware of this. If this is not allowed to share POINTERS to good tools then please remove this, otherwise leave it for all to check out and use.

I tried this tool called Driver-Genius Professional, and it is great for backing up drivers on PCs and restoring the drivers after a clean build etc vs having to search for that floppy or CD or website with the correct drivers. They have a trial that works for 15 days for free then you have to buy it to use after that. (From the looks of it, for 15 days you can backup system drivers and use the drivers stored in a folder later even if you dont buy it, which is weird.) I myself will buy it vs use it past the 15 days illegally, even though it appears that you could use the drivers folder created afterwards without the need of this software since you can POINT windows to this folder for inf drivers etc without the software installed and it works. There are no dependancies of this software to be registered or installed to restore drivers from what I can see...

Here is the link to the website to check out: http://www.driver-soft.com/DriverMax: http://www.innovative-sol.com/drivermax/ - freeCool...I will check that one out...Thanks!http://driveragent.com/?PHPSESSID=qouukvqrn46ugb4kp7vm0r14n5
this one is also goodNot free, though. I mean, the SCAN is free. That's it.http://www.driverguide.com/
this one is okay and you cant beat the price FREE I use this one: http://www.drivermagician.com/Lite.htm

There is a paid version with more bells and whistles, but just to have a copy of the drivers on a restored computer the Lite version is fine. The link is to the download page and shows a comparison of Lite vs the full version.

I install from a portable drive, run it and back up the non-Windows drivers to the portable. This gives me a copies that can be re-installed should the user need them again.

Solve : how to remove camera driver from control panel?

Answer» HI,
This is my first time posting here, so please bear with me if I don't do it just right.

First of all, I have a HP Pavilion Windows XP Service Pack 2 computer. Under Control Panel in Add or Remove, there is something that just says "Camera Driver." I would like to remove it, but when I click on Change/Remove, nothing happens.

I had a couple of digital cameras connected before and am getting a new camera. I would like to remove this before I connect the new one.

Anyone know how I can remove it?

Thank you
wel if you are unable to uninstall it from the Add/Remove button try to uninstall it by double clicking the installation setup ( the exe from where you have installed the files).
I hate to appear stupid, but where would I find the installation set up? I ran a search on Camera Driver, but could not find anything CALLED that. I have no idea what program installed it.

Thank you for your help.wel ther would be a Setup FILE for the camera drivers which you hav installed when U connected your camera to the p.c for the first time. So i am talking about that setup file.I appreciate your help, but I have no idea where that setup file is.Quote
when I click on Change/Remove, nothing happens
Most likely, it's just empty, leftover listing.
Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds. Get "Slim" version.
Read CCleaner instruction here: http://www.jahewi.nl/ccleaner/ccleaner.html, and run CCleanerI did run the CC cleaner and it deleted a lot of unecessary files. I'm very leery about downloading stuff like that and running it, because in the past it, or more likely me, has caused big problems on my computer that it took me forever to fix. This one so far has caused no trouble. After I ran it, I shut off my computer, restarted it, ran Outlook Express and the internet, and everything still works.

But, Camera Driver is still in my Add/Remove section. Should I just ignore it? I'm only worried because when I connect my new digital camera, I don't want it to cause a PROBLEM.

I am REALLY grateful for all the help.CCleaner is very safe program, and it always creates backup, just in case, something goes wrong.

You may want to manually remove that entry. The safe way to do it is described here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314481You are a genius!!! That removed it. Thank you so much. Glad to help

Solve : Can't burn/copy to CD-RW or DVD-RW?

Answer»

We just got this new computer in January... first time with a CD/DVD burner! I seem to only be able to burn and/or copy to CD-R and DVD-R... if I PUT in a blank CD-RW or DVD-RW, my computer doesn't recognize it. Our computer is a Systemax. Not sure what other information is needed. It burns and copies great - as long as I use a -R. I'm just wondering if this is a setting I can change, or if this is just the way my system is. I don't mind until it's one of the kids copying a 10-minute PowerPoint for class and then that disc can never be used again... ug. Thanks for any help/information. A few questions...
What version of Windows ?
What burning program are you using ? ?
What brand of re-writables ? ?
Have you tried another brand ? ?some burners will not recognise -/+rw format only -/+rWe have Windows XP...
I've tried Maxell and Sony...
I've burned CDs and DVDs using CyberLink's Power2Go, I've also burned CDs just using Windows Media Player. It's just when I have a -RW in that any program I try fails to recognize the disc.

If this is true it must be a really chintzy player...i have heard this way back when CD was the only format...i have not heard it since.look at the first dvd PLAYERS. tell me if they were -/+rw compatible.

i havent looked into that dvd playerTry one of these:
1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
or...
2. http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip
or...
3. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.Quote from: NOT ADMIN :P on May 13, 2008, 05:35:32 PM

have i unleashed a beast from a miscommunication, i HOPE not!!

Less than 6 months old it should still be under warranty. It would be time to contact Systemax.

Solve : how to partition a partitioned harddrive?

Answer»

I CURRENTLY replaced my old hard drive with a new 350G harddrive. Before installing windows I never partitioned this into separate partitions, so

windows is installed on this single partition of 350G and there is no unpartitioned space for me to separate space. Is it possible to shrink this

partition in order to have other drives other than C. I would like to partition just my operating system onto like a 100g partition, and my vedio,

music and images onto D with another 100g and finally a drive F with all my software like adobe, microsoft office, etc.. into about a 20g partition.

I think you get the IDEA. Is this possible WITHOUT having to format the hard drive and having to reinstall XP? (xp home is my OS) All help is

appreciated! THanks!

ok what software did you use to partition if in the first place.

is it possible to partition with windows?? he said that but i have never heard of it.

*Hint* re-name your c:/ as a different name to c:/ or put your OS and software on d:/ and e:/ this will eliminate most chances of getting viruses and malware/ spyware written for windows.

you will have to reformat your hard drive and set the 3 partitions up unless you are in possession of UBER partitioning software which re-names files / software directories for you.

So yeah back up and the same way you set 2 partitions you will have to set 3.

Did you want the names of some partitioning software?

What version of windows are you using? A 100GB partion sound a bit like overkill i have a 40Gb partition for vista 64x It just fits and thats all thats on it. just makes it easy for regular AV scans.

I used the windows xp installation CD. before you start installation it asks to partition. I did not partition, just selected the 350G harddrive and downloaded windows.

So when I go into disk management I cannot create a new partition. So are you telling me I have to start from scratch?

And when I partition for windows I should only have 40g partition for my 64x OS? If you have everything BACKED up then it would only take one day to format and reinstall your O.S.

When you boot to the XP CD you choose the first item by pressing enter. then press F-8 to accept the license agreement.
Setup lists all partitions that it finds on the drive, the file system of each partition, and the size of the partition. unpartitioned space is also listed. From this screen you can create and delete partitions and select the psrtition on which you want to install XP. If you plan to have MORE THAN ONE PARTITION on the drive, create only one partition at this point. The partition must be at least 2GB and have 1.5 GB free, but with a 350GB HD I would make it much larger. After the install you can use DISK management to partition.

Solve : Setup did not find any hard disk drivers...?

Answer»

Hi,

I am a newbie in this forum. Few days ago I bought a laptop with INTEL Core 2 Duo Mobile Processor i965, a Toshiba HD (MK32522GSX - (S1) ) of 320 Gb, NVIDIA Graphics card of 512Mb and without O.S.

I am trying to install Windows XP SP2 but within the process it shows the next message: "Setup did not find any hard disk drivers installed in you computer..." and I can't continue.

I've search for information and I've read that I should use a program called nLite and burn a CD with the drivers I need and the WXP ISO, but I have a problem because I don't know which are the drivers I need (I have downloaded many drivers from Intel but I don't know which is the correct) and how to use nLite with it, because it needs a .INF file and I have .exe or others...

Can anybody guide me a little, please?

Thanks for your attention! The drivers for your hard drive won't come from intel. Look to Toshiba for those. The laptop is not seeing the hard drive...not the HDD drivers.
Make sure it is connected properly and or there is in fact one in there.
Travel to the manuf. site for instructions...Have you verified that BIOS sees the drive?Hi,

I got it!! Using nLite I have burned an ISO with the controllers downloaded on Intel (32-bit Floppy Configuration UTILITY for Intel® Matrix Storage Manager) and the WXP and that's all! It WORKS well.

Thanks for your responses!

Solve : Star NX1040 Driver for DOS 6.2?

Answer»

I plan to use a NX1040 that I can get for free to use as a POS receipt printer. I have an old Pentium machine that I can load with the DOS 6.2 system, w/no windows. I will run a Foxpro 2.0 receipt generating program on it for a business. I can get the driver for this printer in Win 3.1 available for download. STAR Micronics told me they don't support that printer any more.

The problem is I don't want any windows programs on it, just DOS 6.2. The closest driver I can get for download is for version Win 3.1. The IRONY is that Win 3.1 isn't a true operating system, but ran as a standard TSR DOS program.

If I just use DOS 6.2, will it run without a driver, since I can send printer code from the Foxpro program such as eject, line feed, etc, or do the commands need to be routed through a DOS driver.

The IBMProprinter driver is compatible I think?.

Thanks for the help.

AndyFIt will not harm anything to try the Win3.1 drivers...just make backup copies of the autoexec.bat and config.sys files beforehand in case it doesn't work...
It will not run without drivers.Quote from: patio on May 14, 2008, 05:19:33 AM

Sorry, wrong. Couldn't be more wrong!

Manual here for NX-1040 and LC-100

http://www.star-m.jp/eng/service/usermanual/lc100um.pdf

Quote
This printer has two emulation modes: Standard/Epson mode and IBM
mode.

In the Standard/Epson mode, the printer emulates the Epson LX-810,
or the EX-800 for color printing. In IBM mode, the printer emulates the
IBM Proprinter III. Some additional command codes, which are a
superset of these emulations, are also supported.

In other words, it's a bog-standard early-1990s 9 pin printer that will PRINT from DOS in 40, 80 & 132 column mode without any driver. There are buttons to select features and fonts.

DOS itself didn't have drivers. To do fancy stuff, each DOS app shipped with its own set of drivers so you had one with Word Perfect and one with Lotus 1-2-3 (a spreadsheet) and one with Foxpro (a database). Setting Epson LX or one of the IBM Proprinter models will do the trick. Lots of fun finding out what they can do!

It will do all kinds of tricks if control codes are used, this is handled for you by the aforementioned "drivers". But you can do it from eg Qbasic.

If you have trouble with getting to work with the parallel port, go into the BIOS and monkey with ECP & EPP settings.

Well excuse the heck outta me...

Quote
DOS itself didn't have drivers.

Quick name 20 devices you had in your vast experience that ran on DOS without drivers ? ?

I clearly meant that printer drivers were not part of DOS.

hard drives
Floppies
cga, ega, vga cards
printers

and HARDWARE in general

(a notable exception would be Soundblaster cards and their clones)

could all be handled natively by MS-DOS. The "driver is part of the OS" model came with Windows.

Solve : Audio Drivers??

Answer»

Say you are in a situation where have just formatted your PC and then installed a fresh VERSION of the operating system... Naturally you would have to reinstall the drivers, but then you don't have the CD to get them at the moment... When downloading AUDIO drivers for your system, what are you supposed to look at? The Motherboard model? or The Chipset? Thanks in advance... XDYou can do both actually. But the safest THING to do is to visit the MANUFACTURER of the motherboard's website. They will usually have the correct drivers.Or the card manufacturer if it's an add-on sound card...

Solve : SATA drives?

Answer»

A simple (I think) QUESTION:

With IDE drives you can set the master/slave status of the drive with jumpers. But there are no jumpers on SATA drives. How do you set their status?

(I'm not interested in RAID CONFIGURATION)
the sata drives set themselves automatically. Just remember if you have an ide drive be sure to set that as a slave drive if you want the sata to be the main one. I have 2 SATA drives. How do I tell the PC which is C and which is D? They are different and it matters which is which.Consult your MBoard MANUAL...the drive designations should follow the MBoard designations...SATA1 2 etc...

Solve : Computer Blue screens constantly after incorrect driver instalation?

Answer»

Hi, i installed a new driver only to find out my label on my computer was wrong and i had downloaded the wrong driver. many experiments later i keep getting the blue screen of death. here are some picture to help out, any advice appreciated.

Boot into safe mode by tapping F8 rapidly on start and before you see the Windows start screen.
Uninstall the incorrect driver and re-boot.
Have you located the correct driver ? ?
If not DLoad and run Everest Home and it will tell you all your machine components...How do i uninstall the driver? I tried from the add remove programs but that screwed my computer up majorly.

Also i can get into my computer fine it just blue screens a lot.

And no i don't know which driver to get. My DX Diag thing says this:
Name: Mobile INTEL(R) 965 Express Chipset Family
Manufacturer: Intel Corporation
Chip Type: Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Familywhat was the driver for? GPU? dvd drive? what COMPONENT?

try running the driver again and look for an uninstall option.

Otherwise tell us the component and we should be able to locate where it is to uninstall itQuote from: NOT ADMIN :P on April 21, 2008, 07:23:07 PM

Keep in mind i know nothing about computers... i cant find where i GOT it from and i got it because the ghost recon website had a link to a better driver so i installed it. i can give you the file names if it helps
winxp_14331.exe
win2k_xp14103.exe

the second one i downloaded when the first stopped working and it works somtimesWhy not travel back to the ghost recon site and find out exactly what you have installed ? ?What is rajni smoking?

What we need to know is what computer part did you install the driver for?

*most of the computer parts inside your computer require drivers (software) to communicate with each other*

Do you have any cds that came with your computer??

See if any say 'driver' or (version 1.64 etc.) on the lable/cover

what were you TRYING to fix or update wen you installed this driver?

Or what wasnt working which made you try to fix it?

Just try to answer as much as you can so we can eliminate some thingsAlso, can you not boot to safe mode and ROLL back the drivedr to an earlier one? Or use system restore to go back to a time before this faux pas?Quote from: CallMeJustin on April 21, 2008, 01:52:33 AM
How do i uninstall the driver?

Click start then click run and type in: devmgmt.msc
This will take you to Device Manager. Here you see all of your hardware devices and drivers. If you see a yellow or red ! or ? then you need a driver or have the wrong one installed.

right click the device that is in question and choose uninstall.

The best place to get drivers is usually from your computer manufacturers website. Check it out and see if they have driver downloads

Solve : RAID?

Answer»

How do I know if my Windows Server 2003 has RAID setup?
Is it possible to change the RAID without having to reinstall the OS?You can check the drive management to see if a RAID is setup.

Software RAID is good, but not as good as Hardware RAID where a physical device manages the RAID vs the OS in Software RAID.

Software RAIDs are generally cheaper to set up because you dont need to spend extra money for the Hardware RAID Controller, and generally the Hardware RAID Controller unless an older controller or lower end MFR, will out perform a software RAID which has to rely on system resources while a Hardware RAID is a self contained Resource so it does not usually detract from system performance unless its a lower end controller or old.

Also if the Hardware is a Server, generally the motherboards come with Hardware RAID ready to roll out, tucked into the BIOS.

If you need further assistance, post back and I will point you further in the direction you want to go with your RAID needs to find out more info about it etc.

As far as your question REGARDING if the OS has to be reinstalled, the answer is generally not. Generally you can add drives to build which ever flavor of RAID you want, however I have seen in some occasions with some older controllers where they do not allow for drives to be added after the fact to build a RAID after data is already present. These drives generally will build the RAID, then format and Sync themselves, then will be RAW ready for an OS install.

I would backup your server first just to be sure you have a parachute to fall back on in case you run into a problem. I generally GHOST my systems with Ghost 2003, then test the duplicated drive to make sure it behaves the same as the original drive, then pull the original drive out and set it off to the side as a fail safe, then go forward with adding drives if the system is not a HOT Swapable RAID Controller, or a RAID controller I have never worked with before that I dont know what the OUTCOME would be.

You can also do RESEARCH into the controller, once you figure out the make and model if hardware RAID and see if there are any problems with adding drives or creating a RAID set on a drive with data already present.

Generally Software RAIDs are always forgiving as long as you do not format the drives. You should be able to make a RAID 0 or 1 easily with the OS Software RAID. This will give you the same redundancy and/or spanning that a Hardware RAID will give you, but the performance will be less than a hardware RAID, also Hardware RAIDs are generally better at reporting drive issues vs a Software RAID. Software RAIDs will spill errors into the event log, but if you dont check the event log you will miss that you have lost say one of the drives that make up your mirror and your mirror is broken. The show goes on, but you are flying in dangerous territory since you now have no fault tolerance. This happened to me with my 18 GB software RAID mirror. Fortunately I caught it before the 2nd drive died, so I did not have a total loss!!! Hardware RAIDs generally will have an audio alarm like a Piezo buzzer that will beep loudly when a drive has malfunctioned to alert you to a problem without having to keep and eye in to the event LOGS for trouble.

Hope this helps and is not overwhelming...

Solve : COMPUTER FREEZING RANDOMLY?

Answer»

Hey guys,

My computer keeps randomly freezing while i am playing games. (cod4, crysis and warcraftIII)

spose u want specs...

4gb ram
intel 6600 quad core
Asus striker mobo
2 8800GTs (512mb) running SLI
24" chimei

Vista x86

I am using nvidia drivers and they are up to date

running bitdefender ultimate 08 (AV and firewall)

When it freezes the screen stops where i was ingame. I cant bring up tsk man and the sound it was playing wen it froze repeats in a loop until i hold power button down.

Im thinking it may be drivers but i have no ideas

Even running crysis on high on a RESPECTABLE resolution it freezes the same as a lower end game for today as WC3.

I own battle field 2 and that has never frozen on me but i do get wierd black spots on the terrian.

Im not sure whether this is hardware or driver based issues.

So i will start here, mainly because ive heard of many issues between vista and nvidia

Thanks in advance... i hopeSP1 installed?Crysis freezes everything...you're not the first.Yes but it is all games

Or are you suggesting i uninstall crysis?

I will check what SP is installed

Cant remember

Thank god im going to get some help!!!!Yes i have SP1 installed.

It may be a conflict with bitdefender (AVG)

because it randomly scans files in use hence the random freezes.

I initially thought it may be my usb keyboard because i am always holding [alt] for wc3
and CLICKING and pressing other keys so i may have been activating multiple processes until my computer couldnt handle it and it froze up.

But then i realised it happened in games that didnt rely on [alt] to play

Is there something i can try now that you know i have SP1?

i will take of file scanning (real time) and have to manually system scan every now and then.

Try that anyways

PS its not overheating***Vista SP1 has known issues wit nVidia drivers. You may check with nVidia FORUMS, if there is any solution, yet.Is it possible to use a 3rd parties drivers for my 8800GT's running in SLI???I simply don't know.I have used Omega drivers on nVidia cards before...your mileage may vary.should i remove SP1??

and try that?

Ive tried running with bitdefender off and firewall off

still same issue

i think it is becoming more frequent im gonna try a reformat again seeing that my computer is still new.

When i can be bothered...

In the meantime if you think of any other solutuions to try inform me.

thanksANY IDEAS???Try uninstalling SP1Post the entire blue screen error message...DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I KNOW!!! its not overheating or faulty RAM.

Have run multiple tests on both.

I am thinking it may be a nvidia driver related problem and trying a 3rd party's driver.

Starting with....?

OMEGA (because it was reccomended above)Quote

UPDATE!!

I managed to load the 8800 drivers (somehow) without any repair to XP.

Thank you everyone for your input.

that is good yes but how?

Any probs with GAMES??

Sorry for the delay.

Don't know how. Just loaded them and they took.

Games don't work. Probably because I don't have a C drive. My former C drive is now a D drive and I can't change it back.

Don't ask how that happened. I don't know.ive got a program that you can use to change it.

if you install your games again they should work.

go into custom installation if is does not allow you to change the directory first.

I THINK you can change the name of your harddrive with your windows CD

You can delete this thread after it has been noted*

I think you need to make it clear that a hard DRIVE related problem belongs in HARDWARE, not drivers.

Maybe put this in the topic description?

or in the posting rules (please read FIRST) up the top somewhere.

Its just that there is a LOT of hard drive issues coming up in the wrong place and may not be viewed by all the hardware wizz's who potentially be able to help.

have you installed your OS yet?More info needed...disc driver for what ? ?
It is asking if you want to create a floppy for using a SATA HARD drive.hi,thanks for the answers.I bought this computer from a computer store and they put everything together, they must have formatted the hard drive because i just put the Vista disc in and it installed without any problem or asking me anything about the hard drives. The hard drive is SATA.
The computer now is working. Then,I just tried to install the disc that comes with the motherboard, mainly because i didnt have sound which has to be installed with this disc.It started installing and was about 2thirds done.now the sound is working, when starting the 3rd part about the ethernet i think, it suddenly JUMPED to Dos and i have this problem.
Also,i think due to this failure to install this disc,i cant connect to the internet yet,it doesnt see any the modem connection.

Solve : Problem with my DVD burner, Please Help.?

Answer»

I hope I'm posting this in the right forum. I'm running Windows Media Center Edition , Service Pack 3. I have an Acer computer and a 3200+ Amd Sempron Processor. 1.81 GHz 1.25 GB of RAM for my system. My computer was purchased (new) 16 months ago.

Four days ago I started having issues with my System and attempted to do a system restore, but it didn't resolve the issues I was having so I put in my back up discs to restore the system. I don't have an actual windows media CD, it didn't come with the computer, instead I was told I was to create a back up disc from the start, which I did do. I put in the discs and reinstalled windows that way. All loaded perfectly fine and I thought my problems were over.

Except, that's when it started getting weird. while everything loaded and worked just fine, my dvd player (which I used to install the windows) stopped working. It started saying that it couldn't play such and such disc etc.

It shows the files or folders on the discs that I insert. I've tried every kind of disc I can think of, data, picture, cd's (both bought and burned ones), dvd's (originals and burned) etc. I can get the files to show, but I can't play anything. I get "disc may be damaged or driver may be corrupt" message.

A friend and I went and did all the troubleshooting. Device manager shows my Drive as working fine. I uninstalled and reinstalled as Acer suggested. I got rid of the Upper and lower values like suggested. I've updated every driver and every program on my computer.

At first I thought maybe my DVD player was dying, but then my friend suggested I try reinstalling windows with my Back up DVD's again, and then try to play a disc before doing any updates or installing any programs.

I did this and the DVD player worked perfectly fine for booting from disc and reinstalling. The minute i loaded windows tho for the first time and popped in a disc to try it out.. It wouldn't work. Same message as before.

Still it shows everything as working fine. I've done updates. I've tried everything I can think of and friends can think of. A friend of mine who is a computer tech says it seems to him like a program is running in the background that's keeping my DVD Player from working properly, but I can't figure out what process it may be. I'm really baffled thru this and I've tried everything I can think of.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm really confused by this and frustrated. It's been three days of constant trying one solution after another and I would really like to get it working again.

THANK you ahead of time for any replies and I'm SORRY if I post this in the wrong area!Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.I have two primary and two secondary. Should I delete both of each? Can you post the names of all 4 ENTRIES?It shows up as follows...

Primary IDE Channel.
Primary IDE Channel.
Secondary IDE Channel.
Secondary IDE Channel.
Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller
Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller

I have duals of each thing listed under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

I am not sure if this is relevant or not, but I have one hard drive (partitioned) a dvd rom installed, a cd rom installed and a 3 1/2 inch floppy installed.

the properties inside the Primary and Secondary IDE channels are... (In advanced)

The first Primary one listed ...

Device 0
Device type -Auto detection (grayed out)
Transfer Mode- DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode- Ultra DMA Mode 4

Device 1
Device type-Auto detection (grayed out)
Transfer Mode DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode Ultra DMA Mode 2

The second Primary IDE listed...

Device 0
Device type- Auto detection (grayed out)
Transfer mode Dma if available
Current transfer Mode Ultra DMA Mode 6

Device 1
Device type-Auto detection (this one is not grayed out)
Transfer Mode - Dma If available
Current Transfer mode- Not applicable.

The first Secondary IDE channel listed...

Device 0
Device type- Auto detection (not grayed out)
Transfer Mode- Dma If available
Current transfer mode- not applicable

Device 1
Device type -Auto detection (not grayed out)
Transfer mode- dma if available
Current transfer mode- Not applicable

The second secondary IDE channel

Device 0
Device type - Auto detection (not gray)
Transfer Mode -DMA if available
Current transfer mode- not applicable

Device 1
Device type- Auto detection (not gray)
Transfer Mode- dma if available
Current transfer mode- not applicable

I hope this helps and wasn't too detailed:)

thanks!

This MAY be the issue. Uninstall first four (primary, secondary).Sorry, it didn't work:(

I uninstalled all four of them, then rebooted. When I rebooted, it reinstalled each automatically. It then said I needed to reboot for the hardware to work correctly so I rebooted again.

When I rebooted I stuck in a disc to see if it worked. The disc still is showing the files, but won't play anything. This time instead of getting a message stating the disc may be dirty (it's a brand new one so It's not that, plus it works in other players) or the drive may be corrupt I get a message stating that the disc may be dirty or the drive may be malfunctioning, which is a slightly different message from before (good sign maybe?, I don't know).

I checked in my device manager, and all Four IDE channels are back and show the same properties as before I uninstalled and reinstalled them.

Also I checked my DVD player properties and it says that it's functioning properly.

Sorry for being such a pain:( It's really confusing me. I see no other option, but try the drive on another computer. Thanks:) I'll try that and let you know how it goes. A friend of mine just suggested disconnecting my CD drive since it didn't come with the computer and seeing if maybe it's a conflict or something and to set my DVD as "master" if that FAILS, I'll try switching it over to the other system and see if it works there. At least that way I'll know if it's a problem with my system or the drive itself:)

Thank you so much for your suggestions! You're welcome I wish, I was of more help.

Why are you trying to install standard VGA driver, not your video card driver?
I'm confused here...what is happening? You have video problems, Device Manager errors...?

It's something to do with the ATI drivers and this is a very common problem. Some ATI drivers will not install if there is an older ATI driver installed.

To the original poster, give me a little bit and I'll prepare some steps for you.First, go to ATI's website and download the LATEST Catalyst driver for your machine.

Go into Add/Remove PROGRAMS and remove anything "ATI". Go into the Device Manager (right click My Computer, click properties, click Hardware tab, click Device Manager) and look under "Display Adaptors". Delete any ATI hardware listed there. Restart your computer.

After the restart, Windows may detect your video card again and attempt to install a driver for it, cancel this. Install the ATI Catalyst driver you downloaded.i did everything . even i use the driver cleaner in safe mode (disabling antivirus) with cab clear. after that i reinstall the OS . after that how can an old driver be in the system as all REGISTRY settings are new. even after this the display driver adaptor say such error message. in device manager a yellow ? mark device is there (VGA controller) when i uninstall it and reboot system says new hardware found and trying to search the driver but failed . so what can i do further?Formatting the drive was a bit drastic and unnecessary. But now that you've done that, repeat the same procedure as before (remove all ATI software from Add/Remove Programs, remove from Device Manager, etc.) and then download and run the Catalyst removal tool from http://support.ati.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=1447.

After that, restart and try to reinstall the driver.i tried with the catalyst uninstall utility before posting in this forum. should i install the original driver supplied in a CD while purchasing the notebook?Try all of the steps again AND that tool. The tool alone or just uninstall doesn't always work. They need to be done together.

Solve : improper canon MF8100 uninstallation?

Answer»

I have a Canon printer MF8100 at work. I wanted to reinstall the driver, so I removed the existence driver from add/remove PROGRAM in control panel. When I install it again, it fails because the older version of MF driver still exists. How could I detect it? I appreciate any quick help. Thanks a LOT in advance.
You don't deal with drivers through Add\Remove, but through Device Manager. You probably uninstalled the program that COMES along with some Canon PRINTERS, but not the driver itself. You need to go to the Control Panel and open the Printers section. Delete the printer from there.

NEXT, right-click on My Computer and select "Properties". Click the "Hardware" tab, then the "Device Manager" button. Delete the printer from here as well (if it is present).

Next, unplug your printer from your computer and install the drivers. Don't plug it in until the install program asks you to or begins searching for the printer.

If you need any further help or have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Solve : SATA hard drive is working much slower than it should?

Answer»

Hello,

right now i have a problem that my hard disk is working really slow on the speed of about ~17MB/sec (according to windows device manager test). Yet, when i start windows in safe mode, it shows the speed of about 70 MB/sec, which is more like it.
The problem itself started right after I've upgraded some parts of my computer (bought new motherboard, CPU, ram and VGA) while leaving hard disk and OS as they were. I've tried to install all new drivers, I even used some 3rd party programs to clean old drivers from the system first, but the problem persist whatever I do.
I mean I've tried latest drivers from official website, I've tried those drivers from CD in MB package, I've even tried to let windows decide what drivers must be used but nothing changed.
I'm sure that the drivers actually were installed because device manager was reflecting those changes.
I'm sure that there were no problems shown in device manager whatsoever (no yellow ! or red crosses).
There are no ERRORS in windows event log.
I'm sure that hard drive is working in DMA mode and its reflected in sata controller driver settings.
So i guess the problem is all about drivers (after all in safe mode windows is working as intended) and I believe the problem exists because there are SATA controller drivers left from the old motherboard (Si3114r5 sata controller, although they were uninstalled using windows control panel; but i still see files named sixxxx in windows\inf folder). So basically I want to know how to make sure that those drivers work PROPERLY like they were installed on brand-new OS. I'd also love to know why it all works well in safe mode while i cant get it to work in normal mode...

And 1 more THING - I bought windows as OEM and that means that i actually don't have the disk itself. I could have tried to GO to retail store and ask them for CD but since I bought it over 5 years ago i guess they wont really give it to me. So I'm in a very tricky situation right now - I cant reinstall windows and I cant use recovery system as well. I also don't really want to reinstall the whole system as well...

Configuration:
OS: Windows XP SP2

new parts, which i bought recently:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+
2x DIMM DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-6400) 800MHz - 1GB each
MB MSI K9N6SGM-V (MCP-61 serial ATA controller)
GeForce 8600GTS
old parts, which I kept after buying new ones:
SATA Seagate Barracuda 120GB
DVD-RW drive

Also, my former motherboard was called asus k8n-e deluxe (Si3114r5 sata controller).

I really hope I'll get some help here, I've been trying to sort this problem for a few days by now and I'm completely out of ideas what else I can do to fix this...as far as I can see, there's only one solution:

get a new XP CD and reinstall Windows.

Basically what you got is a new pc, but you're using the OS from the old one.
That's bound to give you problems.Try a computer repair shop in your area and see if they will sell you an XP CD for a fair price...eventually you are going to need it.
Do you still have your liscense key ? ?

Solve : 80pin and 40 pin /80wire means the same??

Answer»

I have a problem with my computer...the engineer asked me to BUY an internal hard drive, it should be IDE and 80 pin.
and i tried to find on the internet but all of them are 40 pin and some are 40 pin /80wire.........so i wanted to KNOW if 80pin and 40 pin/80wire means the same.
Thanks in advance. Is this disk SCSI or IDE?

IDEIDE connectors have 40 pins. Original (40 wire) IDE cables had 40 signal wires. Modern high speed (40 pin/80 wire) IDE cables have an extra screening wire between each adjacent pair of signal wires. These 40 extra wires are not CONNECTED to any of the pins.

Your engineer sounds confused, as there are no 80 pin IDE drives, only 80 wire IDE cables. However, some SCSI drives have 80 pin SCA connectors.

i think he wanted to SAY 40 pin 80wire (connector)
Thank you

Solve : Blue screens caused by possible driver problems?

Answer»

Lately, I've been getting the dreaded blue screens with the following error message:

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Technical Information:
***STOP: 0x000000D1 (0x001201c3, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xAF771B6)

Each time, it says that a memory dump occurs, that I should make sure to check any recently-installed software and hardware, and that I should disable caching and shadowing on my mobo. I went ahead and uninstalled all software that's been installed in the last month. I checked my mobo's manufacturer website and forums and presented the problem there, and apparently, my mobo doesn't support disabling shadowing and caching. Every so often, the blue screen COMES up, and if I'm playing games, my computer would spontaneously shut off completely and instantaneously. When try to boot up my computer again, it will again shut off completely and instantaneously on the Windows boot screen. It takes me about 3-5 tries to be able to fully boot up my computer again.

I've checked online for driver updates, and all my drivers are apparently up to date, yet this problem still persists. http://tweaksforgeeks.com/IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.html
Quote

every time I've run into it it's been a hardware error. Most COMMONLY it is the CPU overheating. A close second would be BAD RAM.
incorrect.

What VIDEO cards are you using??

If they are nvidia. BINGO.

I just solved this problem with the same error with my 2 8800GT's running in SLI.

SOLUTION: Go to nvidia control panel, (right click* and its in that menu)

go to video options or something similar and select that all the option are set to "determine by software/game"

If you have any options forced on that the game you are playing does not support that is what crashes your system.

Otherwise you may just have to DL a previous version of your video card driver which may not have any problems.

Quite often they are not tested fully and people experience that error and revert back to a previous driver until the new one is fixedQuote
incorrect.
Wow!Im hoping this worked???

wouldnt want to correct Broni and then be wrong

I heard he has well developed mind control and can eat your brain thru the internet. :O

*all information supplied by quaxo, and he should be punished for anything that i have done wrong*

umm- patio never POSTED in this thread irrelevant, I know. and, so far.

how would the Nvidia drivers cause a spontaneous reboot? Although windows Loads them it doesn't actually call on them until it gets to the welcome/logon screen.(I think)

Also if his computer is fairly old (AMD K6-2, Pentium 2, etc) then essentially any driver software after around 2001 will cause the IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_EQUAL (with my old AMD K6-2, I couldn't play Midi's with the MIDI synthesizer, and god forbid I install ANY Nvidia graphics card...)

The key here is what did you install right before this started happening?thanks to the edit function it is now BS_programmer who looks the fool.

lol blast u! And it's BC_programmer, no BS, although that would be a neat name.
