You didn't receive an email, or you didn't click on a link to activate your account?
For what it is worth: You don't need to register to download a file there.

Use the "Download this file by viewing a series of ads (no REGISTRATION required) " option.

After each AD loads, choose "No thanks" or "Continue" or "Next" or whatever the button is labeled, to keep moving on.
After four or five ads, you are presented with a download screen.

Solve : display drivers?

Answer»

Im haveing trouble with an i-buddie laptop with WIN ME on it. The display settings got changed somehow while a client of ours had the laptop and now I cant get any higher SETTING than 16 colors and I cant change the res. to move off off 640x480. The display adapter is set to standard PCI Graphics Adapter(VGA). When I change the display adapter to Super VGA I can get higher res. but I still cant change my color to any more that 16 colors. I was wondering if anyone could help me out because I dont know exactly what kind of display adapter I have or how I can find out , I think I must need to install diffrent drivers or something any ideas.Welcome aboard....
Yeah, you need to update your video driver.
Get Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
and it'll tell you what kind of graphic adapter you have...
or POST your laptop model/model number, and we'll try to find it for you.another way to find out is to download CPU-Z (free program), run it. Somewhere under one of those tabs should list your graphics card TYPE.

The problem is I think there are no drivers available for this card I have, since I searched everywhere, even on driver download pages from ATI/AMD. Is there an alternative way to fix this problem, a link to the driver update with OpenGL I need for those games or do I have to wait?

Thanks.

it´s a Fujitsu Siemens computer. I already checked there for the driver for my X1400, they had it, I downloaded it. I exed the file, it began installing. But it said some files couldnt be installed. After the reboot all visual advances for Vista were horrible and I had to reboot from another day. I am really confused what to do now

ThanksPretty nice setup:)The .exe package got me installing Catalyst again but I dont see how that´s going to help me running these PARTICULAR games. After installation I try to run the games but I got the same error in console.

I noticed that if I replace a game's .exe file with a NOCD crack games run, but there aren't any cracks for JK 2/3 so maybe it's because I use CD's but it still isn't normal.

EDIT: and C. says OpenGL version is still Not AvailableThe Warez and cracks are probably the issue.

Solve : I would appreciate your help!?

Answer»

Hello everyone!
I am new in here,so just a few information about be. I am from Greece and I study Elecronic engineering ang computer engineering but I think I chose the wrong field as I tend to WANT to smash my pc into pieces just like now.
My problem started when during the windows boot my screen went black and everything stopped. I tried to repair windows but installation stopped when about 34 minutes were remaining and while devices where installed. My only choice was the format. After format, windows started normally but the screen had some weird colors as well as weird was the screen acceleration. I tried to do install my graphic cards drivers when everything gone black again. If through the safe mode I uninstall these drivers, windows work again. I need a new graphic card? Can I do anything else or as I told you just throw the laptop off my balcony?
Oops..I forgot the information about my pc!It s a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pi 1556 laptop with Nvidia geforce go 7600. I use windows xp home edition +service pack2.2 things i know of that cause this symptom..
1) Dirt/scratches or smudges on the CD...clean it with a soft lint-free cloth.
2 ) RAM issues. How much RAM is in this laptop ? ?Quote

Make sure clean it in RADIUS direction, not in circles. There is a possibility you could make an exact copy of
your install disk on another computer and where the
original gave you problems the duplicate will work fine.

Try BlindWrite it gives you a 20 day free trial. See below.

I'm going to try everything you suggest me. I just hope I won't need to change my graphic card as I heard that this costs as if I buy a new one laptop, and I bought this one just a year ago. Also excuse me if my English are bad

Don't listen to others, listen to us
You can get really nice video card for about $100, and an average one for much less.Oooops, I forgot, you have a laptop...Sorry..That's plenty of RAM...ok...I tried everything you told me.. At first I tried to install windows and I GOT an error "can't find a hard disk". Then I did a memory test using Ubuntu installation cd. Everything seemed to be ok as far as ram is concerned. I installed ubuntu, everything was working properly till I decided to make an upgrade. Pc then turned off by its own, and everytime I try to get into Linux, again screen has some weird colors and pc does nothing after a while. Any more suggestions? Might it be a hard disk problem? It may be. Go to your HD manufacturer SITE, and DOWNLOAD their diagnostic program.

Re-install your motherboard drivers...
Did you recently re-install Windows ? ?My motherboard drivers are working just fine, but i did recently install windows XP sp2. swiching from linux--too confusing. One thinks..Wow! I could guess which drivers!

Have you ran Everest to see which drivers you need to
download?

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.htmlwow everest is the one solution to all of your driver needs...

IT says:

Intel 82801DB ICH4 - AC'97 Audio Controller [B-0]

I have no clue what that meant... but that was under multimedia-then PCI/PnP Audio. After doing some research I believe the below driver will work.
I used Winrar extracted the files to a folder and they appear
to be what you need.

http://ftp.us.dell.com/audio/R56339.EXEOK it said at the end of the installer (the one where when ur in the web browser and you click install now) it said Driver not found please reboot your system, etc. so i did and it still didnt work...What is that board chipset?
sorry idk what that is In Everest, go Computer>Summary, and paste that info in your next post.FieldValue

Pls.Inform me about this problem.
what can I do when the system (XP) lose the file (ntldr).
so I can't LOGIN my system without FORMAT.[/color]there is no need to format your system, the only thing that can solve the problem is that just install another window xp on your system, it does not require formatting.

let me know if it works.

the other step might be SOMEHOW cumbersome. You might want to just out in your xp CD and boot from it.

After that read the instructions carefully and try to FIX it NOT FORMAT IT.You can safely ignore the 2 suggestions above...

Solve : Windows 98 on an Asus EeePC?

Answer»

Alright guys, someone is bringing me their EeePC 4G in a couple days and wants me to try to put Windows 98 on it. Sounds simple enough, except Asus only provides drivers for Linux and Windows XP. Why not just go with Windows XP? This model of the EeePC only comes with a 4GB solid state disk. XP takes about 75% of that, not leaving much to work with after the install. HOWEVER, Windows 98 uses quite a bit less than that plus it will run faster on the EeePC's hardware.

What I need to do is try to locate drivers to make all of the hardware functional. So far, I think that I can get Windows 98 drivers for the Intel video chipset and the Realtek audio chipset. Other than that, I think this is gonna be a pain in the *censored* (like USB 2.0, the wireless adapter, etc.)

Attached is the Everest Home report on the system, if it's of any use. I've edited out some irrelevant parts, but all the information on the hardware is there.

-=EDIT=-
Ok, the full report is too large. I've just included the summary, if anyone needs more info for any piece of hardware, just ask and I'll post the relevant sections.

Oh, and it will be Windows 98 SE.

[saving space - attachment deleted by admin]Why not Win2K....at least it's NT based and many of those WinXP drivers will/should functionHe's SUPPOSED to be bringing me a Win98 CD to do this with. He doesn't have 2000. I've been looking around, but I can't find everything I need for this. Might not be able to do it and have everything functional.
Your USB may be solved by installing nusb33e.exe..

LookHereONE of the drivers I can't seem to find are the motherboard chipset drivers. At least I think that's the one... I can't remember. I was looking last night and I know there was something I couldn't find drivers for.

Oh, they dropped off the computer today, but not the 98 CD, they'll bring that on monday. Right now I've got XP on it and I'm trying to reduce XP's size as much as possible. Right now I've got Windows XP and the drivers at 2.5GB, with a bunch of crap already removed. Still more to do though.

They've also brought an external 80GB drive that I can use for installing programs that don't need to run at start up. This will free up space on the 4GB SSD.Here Ya Go

I was able to track down drivers for everything but the Atheros wireless for Win2K but not Win98.
Have him try the local University bookstores for Win2K.
As most of these devices were in their infancy around Win98 i don't think you'll have much success.

Another option would be Bold Fortunes Guide to slimming down WinXP. He is the ultimate Guru on this Topic and although it is no small task it may be just what the Doctor ordered...

The link is to another Forum that hosts his guide...

P.S. If you do go this route i highly suggest an image program such as Acronis for the finished product....you wouldn't want to do this twice.
With a fresh image of the trimmed OS and drivers all running and installed you are 7 minutes away from a restore should anything go amiss...Yeah, I've done most of the things he mentions. Some new things in there though I can try. I've got it down to 1.83 GB now. I've READ I can DELETING the i386 folder which contains the driver library, or move it to the external, then just direct Windows there when it needs something or put in the CD. That'd free up another 100MB almost, but I'll leave that for now I think. While I'm smart enough to know how to do that, I don't think they are. Gonna see how much more I can trim off here.1.85 GB, I don't think it's gonna get any smaller. I've deleted just about everything he mentions as well as what ASUS recommends removing in the EeePC manual. Think I'll recommend this guy installs OpenOffice instead of getting 2007. I took a look from my 2007 CD, just installing Word and Excel with minimal extra options still came out to over 1 GB. Gonna download and try OpenOffice and see how small I can get it.

-=UPDATE=-

While waiting for Open Office to download, I've managed to get it down to 1.57 GB used. Now I really don't think I can get it down any more. They'll have to live with that if they want everything to work.

-=UPDATE=-

Open Office Writer and Calc (Word and Excel equivalents) installed. Space used: 277MB with most options. Not bad. Better than 1.2 GB that Office 2007 needed.Copy the i386 folder as is to the external...this will cause zero issues.
XP does not need it to run.
It only accesses it for driver updates or when running sfc /scannow...

Did you happen to sell them on the Acronis idea ? ?
ver. 10 which is all they will need is about 20 bucks shipped from newegg.
Well worth it.
You may want to grab one for yourself at that price. Peace of Mind.Nah, haven't spoken to the since they dropped it off. It's 1am, so I probably won't hear from the tonight haha

I'm still plugging and unplugging different things into it (flash drives, ext. CD and HDD, etc.). I'll move that i386 folder as soon as I'm done. Just get tired of having to tell it again and again every time I put something new in it. Actually, I could move it now I think. Windows has everything it needs now.

The only think left to put on it is VLC player, but other than that I'm done. 1.86GB complete with:

Windows XP
Open Office
AVG Free Edition
Comodo Firewall
CCleaner
All drivers for the hardware

I'd say 1.86 GB isn't all that bad.True...but 850Mg would be alot sweeter...
You've piqued my interest on this build...keep me posted.
But you still didn't answer my questions...Quote from: patio on December 28, 2007, 03:21:21 PM

But you still didn't answer my questions...

Oh, sorry. What'd I miss?

Acronis True Image ? ?Yeah, I might pick that up. The EeePC is quite popular here. While we don't sell laptops, a friend of mine who runs a shop in the mall down the street does. He has sold 10 this week and most of the people have asked for XP to be installed on it. He said he's gonna start sending people my way and have me do it. Would save me the trouble of going through it again and again to reduce the size.

Solve : USB stop seeing old dvd drive, jump drive?

Answer»

My Toshiba laptop cannot see the USB devices I used before, after I tried and uninstalled the Nero 7 suite with an LG external DVD writer. Now my jump drive(Sandisk Micro Cruzer 2G), and my old Norwood Micro external DVD burner ALSO is not recognized. Something about drivers that I couldn't resolve. Would appreciate any help. What flavor of Windows might this be ? ?Win XP.Travel to Device Manager...
Right clik EVERY instance of USB roots and hubs and select remove/uninstall...
You will get a warning message ...ignore it.
Unplug all USB devices not needed to boot
Power down and re-boot.

Tried that. Didn't work. ANYBODY with any IDEA to get the USB seeing external DVD burner, flash drive, and SD card reader again. The SD card reader does SHOW up as a working device, but I can't write to or see the files on it. The only USB device still working is my mouse ( Targus on Toshiba laptop A100). My next step would be the big restore. I restored it to a point about a month ago to no avail.
PaulWithout any success in all attempts to revive the non-functioning USB ports, I went for the bing restore. No luck, still cannot see flash drive, external hard drive etc. So It does not seem to be a software or driver issue. Look like a hardware problem. Is it possible and cost effective to sent to the repair shop? It's a basement level 2-year old Toshiba A100, Celeron M 1.5, 256 RAM, 60G hard drive. Paid $600. Latest ads have $400 laptops with way better specs. Without USB ports I can't do most of my usual stuff. Opinions!I'd make some calls...i had USB ports replaced on 2 devices recently...a Guitar Port setup and a desktop MBoard.
Both times he charged me $35.00 but it will be a different story with a laptop. May get as high as $100 or so...

Solve : system32\drivers\mup.sys?

Answer»

Im sorry if this is in the wrong topic area but I have heard it described as a hardware/software DRIVER and network problem so Im hedging my bets.

Im trying to repair my brothers computer which blue-screened and DIED during a high demand game program a week ago. It freezes and flashes an (unreadable) blue screen on last known good configuration and start windows XP normally. Using safe mode, command prompt and NETWORKING options on the advanced options all freeze when loading the system32\drivers\mup.sys file. Re-setting the Bios has not worked and without being able to get the command prompt I cant manually delve in and start messing with things

Normally I would simply use a restore disk or windows CD, however heres the kicker Im working on a Sony Vaio which did not come with a windows OS CD, I believe they kept the restore information in a partition on the drive somewhere which without command prompt working I cant explore and run any sort of restore or re-install. Any ideas? Saving the data would be nice but not vital, Im mainly trying to avoid buying a new copy of windows.

Note windows is completely unloadable, therefore all options based on re-setting or turning of video/drivers from windows are out, ANYTHING that requires command prompt or windows xp systems is out unless someone could find a way to get to them I have a the same MODEL of Vaio myself so could make recovery CD, but I dont know if there is an option for this

Any suggestions WelcomedQuadruple Post.

Solve : sound card driver?

Answer»

Hi, ive recently re-formatted my hard DRIVE (low level format) and upgraded my WINDOWS xp to service PACK 2. Now I get no sound because the computer doesnt recognise my sound card. I realise that I have to download and install a driver but I cant tell what soundcard I have as it is inbuilt into the computer HARDWARE and hidden within the motherboard somewhere.
I have re-formatted before and solved this problem but I have forgotten how. The speakers I have are MERCURY MS-440 if that is any help.

Thanks

Solve : Need to install Compaq Driver Updates, PLEASE HELP!?

Answer»

Hello Everyone...

I am using a Compaq Presario M2000 Notebook with Windows XP Home Edition SP2.
I just visited the Compaq website and searched for driver updates for a Compaq Presario M2045AP Notebook PC. I choose Windows XP Home Edition and there is a long list of driver updates that I haven't installed yet. Downloaded an update for Conexant AC-Link AUDIO, but when I install the update, it takes a long time to install and then SAYS "FAILED". I've tried the same update twice and it still doesn't work.

Any ideas on how to install the following update:

Conexant CX20468-31 AC97 Audio driver

Any help much appreciated. Thanks. In some cases, you may need to uninstall the previous driver before installing an updated one. Have you tried that?If quaxo's advice doesn't work, try different site:
Link EditHi Broni, I think that was the wrong driver. That driver was for Conexant AC-97 Audio, the driver I have installed is Conexant AC-Link Audio. After installation of the driver and rebooting the computer, there was no sound and the computer would beep instead of making a sound. Don't worry, I managed to "roll back" the driver in Device Management.

No. I'll try that.Broni, please ignore what I said above.
That was the correct driver, but after installing I do have problems with the sound driver. In device manager I receive Code 10 after installing the driver.Oh, one more thing I forgot to mention.

When I use the installation application to install the driver, it shows FAILURE under results. I have never had this problem the last time I updated my drivers...Did your sound work at all, before you started all that update procedure?Yes.OK, I've done some more research. The drivers that are required are:

Conexant CX20468-31 AC97 Audio driver
Conexant CX20468-31 AC97 Audio driver EQ

So I have the right installation file, but every time I install the driver update, it says FAILED.

If your sound works OK, why do you need updates, then?

There were so many installation files for the driver. Most of them said "No Fixes or Enhancements", but one of the installation files said that it does FIX something.

So there. I was confused.I live by:
If it's not broken, don't fix it.Try installing it in safe mode. This sometimes helps. It may be failing because the files are in use, they won't be in safe mode.

Solve : Hard drive problem?

Answer»

Well, aparently everything started when I tried to access some folders of my hard drive and it gave an "inpage error" thingy, I restarted the computer (sometimes it acts retarded so I thought it would fix it) when I check my computer both my hard drive partitions (D and E) are gone.
I rly don't know what happened, my main disk is working, DEVICE manager and add and remove hardware says I got the other disk but it doesn't RECOGNIZE it (doesn't know up at my computer, etc).
I was hoping you guys could help me :SHave you tried running the manufacturers software test
to see if it reports the drive good ?

GoHerewell, I did just tried running them, it seems the one that could actually help doesn't run on "servers" lol.
but aniways, in the device manager, when I check my maxtor disk it says It's running correctly...
Still got the same problem, He shows up at a secondary slave at restart and all but I can't access it on logical drives / My Computer.Windows isn't a reliable indicator of whether a drive is fine or not, it can only do very limited diagnostics. You will NEED the manufacturer's diagnostic tool in order to perform a proper test.
What do you mean when you say it doesn't run on servers? It shouldn't matter if it's a server or not. What tool did you try?I tried Maxtor MaxBlast and when I try to install it doesn't cos I'm running a server platform unfortunately, and it only works on "workstations"MaxBlast isn't a diagnostics utility, it's for setting up a new drive.
What you need is SeaTools. The reason it's from Seagate is because Seagate bought up Maxtor a while back. Oh yeh of course...SORRY if I sound like a noob...I have a basic knowledge of computers but I never had a problem of this sort and stuff so :SOh don't worry, you're not. Keep us updated on any progress you have and don't be afraid to ask more questions.oh sorry I forgot to post, I know for bout 2 days now that the hard drive is actually BROKEN beyond repair (full of bad sectors) I'll just have to buy a new one and pass the data to the new one, thx for all the help
I still can't beleive this came from a RESTART, Now I'm afraid to do another one hahaha Too bad about your drive, unfortunately these things happen from time to time. Don't worry too much about doing a restart, it was most likely not the cause, just the last straw.

Solve : laptop mouse ps/2 compatible drivers?

Answer»

Hi there,
I got a new Logitech mouse for a toshiba laptop... using windows XP; SP2. Model name Satellite A30, Part #: PSA30C-00YS5.

It kept saying on startup that new hardware was detected and would give me an error message saying it wasn't installed properly...data error, CYCLIC REDUNDANCY check...(but the mouse still works).

I went under 'mouse' properties, uninstalled the drivers, restarted with the mouse back in the PS/2 port thinking it will re-install again...and it didn't, gave me the error message again. Now under mouse properties it doesn't even have ps/2 mouse listed. It has 'unknown' (where PS/2 compatible used to be) and HID-compatible mouse listed. So even the old mouse that I had that DID previously work on here does the same thing on startup. I tried installing the intellipoint microsoft software, the logitech software off their website (for the new mouse), and both didn't work.

It now gives me the error message everytime I START up the computer, even if I LEAVE the mouse unplugged...the computer goes very slow, and it says it cannot install ps/2 compatible mouse. Toshiba website didn't seem to have many drivers listed... Updating the drivers from the mouse properties/device manager doesn't work either.

I don't have the XP cd or anything with this laptop, is there anyway I can fix this?
Thanks a bunch...
A CRC error means the DLoad is corrupt...try DLoading the Logitech drivers again and re-installing them.

Solve : Computer won't load pictures from camera?

Answer»

I am SO frusterated! I WENT out and bought a new USB cord, cause I figured maybe that's why it wasn't working. Same THING happened. So I went and tried connecting it to another computer, still doesn't work..well that's not surprising since it wouldn't have the program on the other computer anyways. Tried formating the camera, same thing.
I don't know what else to do It's all good ! I didn't fix it, but I bought a Card Reader, or whatever it's called. I love it, I just stick my little card in and it TRANSFERS my pictures! Yeah, buying the Card Reader was a good MOVE. Not only did it solve your problem, but using a Card Reader avoids the problematic situation of transferring photos directly from camera to computer when the batteries GET too low and the transfer is interrupted mid-stream. That result in corrupted photo files.

Solve : Up dateing nvidia 7600gs drivers?

Answer»

I have followed the so called procedures, i removed all previous drivers with add/remove the used driver cleaner, then Glarysoft registry cleaner, rebooted and tried to install 169.21 forceware winxp 32 and it does most of it before it stops and says can't do it. Now i look in the device manager and it says "other device" so it no longer sees the 7600.... What went wrong? and how do i get it to see the card and accept the new drivers? and or does this have ANYTHING to do with permissions in the registry? I do have ADMINISTRATION rights.. What am i doing wrong? I feel like a nubee again and need to be walked through the process. Help please i want to GO back to playing my games!!!
Many thanks for any help....What kind of error do you get when installing the driver?Another good thing to try would be to re-install the drivers that SHIPPED with the card...when it comes to drivers newer isn't always better...I feel stupid and relieved!! By coming back to this forum and finding my old log-in info i was able to see all my previous ?'s from a year ago which was in dang XP Home registry.
Turns out my system reverts back to original set up for some reason. But the FIX was this.

registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Enum
PCI
then right click and check full control in order to install property.

And it works fine. Just took most of today to figure it out. This time though i am printing it out so i will remember how to do it. Nice self-help

W00T! i got the sound drivers working, never mind about the previous post, the package needed is:

R158235.exe

Excellent. Glad you found the right one finally. How did you determine that was the right one anyway? Just curious.

Dell isn't the only one who does this either, I recently had an Acer laptop brought in to me. I don't remember the exact model, but, like Dell, Acer only provides Vista drivers. It took a few days, and a lot of research and digging, but I was finally able to find a driver for everything, from the modem and wireless networking right down to the BUILT in webcam and card reader. Some were provided by the manufacturers of the individual pieces, some were third party. Regardless of whether or not everyone is ready for Vista, they sure are making an effort to force people on it.

i BASICALLY just kept installing, rebooting, uninstalling, rebooting, installing another, repeat. yes, i hate vista enough to go through that like, over a dozen times, probably closer to two dozen, but i'm happy now; as long as the drivers dont flake out again like they did this morning. i dont think they will though, i think its because i forgot to uninstall a SET and i had two sets of drivers installed, oh well, at least the audio is working now, and unlike the vista driver, theres no crackling or popping. also, XP, running everything i ran in vista, and then some only eats 34% of my RAM, where as vista home premium ate 52% to 80% just running programs, and i have two gigs of RAM..

but, as i said earlier, i have audio, i'm happy. this three dollar set of heavy duty school something or another headphones are great, gotta love church sales. thanks again for the help, now all thats left to do is get the webcam, card reader, firewire, and lastly, the BLUETOOTH working, card reader and firewire are no issue, bluetooth and webcam may be though, oh well, i'll re-post if i need help with it, right now i'm done with drivers for a while before i try to get anything else working on this thing, there was just too.. many.. reboots..

i need a driver for

INTEL 82801DB - LAN Controller with 82562et/ez phyHave you tried searching Intel's website?

If this is an integrated DEVICE (built into the motherboard), check their website under your motherboard model. The LAN drivers specific to that motherboard will be found there. You already ran Everest Home...
You still haven't posted what MBoard you have...
Both of these threads would be solved if you just installed your MBoard drivers as suggested...it has NOTHING to do with my motherboard, i just need a driver for it, i lost the cd.I give up...Quote from: liambiscuit on November 22, 2007, 12:33:06 PM

it has nothing to do with my motherboard, i just need a driver for it, i lost the cd.

It sounds like your LAN NIC is integrated into the motherboard. Therefore, we need to know the exact model of the motherboard so we can tell you what driver you need. If you can't provide complete information, there is little chance anyone can help you.

Solve : Getting mouse working in Windows 3.11??

Answer»

Hi all. Lately I've been trying to get some rather old operating systems working on my computer. So far I've got MS-DOS 6.22 working and MS-Windows 3.11 kind of working. Here's my specs, which probably explains a lot of my problems:

Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 (2.20 GHz) processor
nVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT DDR2 graphics card
2 GB PC-5400 DDR2 RAM
160 GB, 7200 RPM Hard Drive
TSST DVD-R/W Drive
Four USB 2.0 Ports
FireWire (IEEE1394) port
10/100 Ethernet
56.6 kbps Modem
ExpressCard slot
DVI port (I think - haven't used it yet)

I successfully figured out how to get MS-DOS 6.22 working perfectly (relatively easy), and to get it to dual-boot with Vista (much harder). Now I've got MS-Windows 3.11 installed and booting. However, I have two problems. The first is that my mouse isn't working. It's a Microsoft mouse, $20 at your local computer store, USB connection and optical. I think it came with a USB/PS/2 connector, but that doesn't help since I don't have a PS/2 connector on my computer.

No cursor appears on the screen at all. I selected "Microsoft or PS/2 mouse" during Windows setup and have a file called "mouse.drv" installed in my Windows 3.11 System folder. Other options included a Logitech mouse option (can't remember them all right now). I'd really like to get the mouse working because it makes everything much easier to use. It didn't appear during the final part of Windows Setup, either (the part with the GUI).

I know USB support is supposedly nonexistant until Windows 98, but Windows 3.11 (and indeed DOS 6.22) is able to fully recognize and utilize my USB 2.0 flash drive with no tweaks at all. So I'm thinking if the flash drive works, surely there's a way to get the mouse working.

The other problem is that windows startup crashes and beeps loudly at me if I press too many buttons while it gives me a blank screen if I don't start in Standard Mode (as opposed to 386 Enhanced). I'm not enough of an expert to know what (if any) adverse effects there are, but given the NAME I would assume something is enhanced.

Help appreciated. It took awhile, but I was eventually able to get MS-DOS up and running. Provided I can get the mouse working in Windows I'll actually be able to load some old software that doesn't work in Windows NT on it!Is legacy support for USB enabled in the BIOS ? ?
Even so i doubt you will be able to get Win3.1 to recognise a USB mouse.
Did you ste this up as a virtual install such as VPN or is it fully bootable from it's own partition ? ?

I'll do some more hunting around meanwhile...Never mind, figured out how to get it working. For whatever reason the third time I booted it the mouse cursor was there, ALBEIT moving quite quickly. Then I found an old Microsoft mouse suite at http://www.oldfiles.org.uk/powerload/download/mouse901.exe, and installed it. That enabled me to change the cursor speed to something reasonable. There's still a huge difference between the trackpad speed (very slow) and mouse speed (standard), but at least one of them works normally and the other can if I change the settings.

I believe legacy USB support is enabled in the BIOS. Didn't have to change it to get this working.

DOS and Windows 3.11 are both booting from their own FAT16 partition, and both are recognizing my USB devices now. Rather surprised they do given the lack of USB when they were around, but I'm not complaining.

Internet access is proving quite a pain, however. Right now I have to download stuff from Vista and put it on the FAT16 partition in Vista. I downloaded a trial of a software called Trumpet Windsock that is supposed to allow a connection, however it involves a large degree of manual configuration including ISP, DNS Server, Domain Server, Netmask, and Gateway (all of which I have) and Vector (which I don't). It also looks like I might need to install some drivers in DOS - all in all it's a bit overwhelming so unless there's a nice automated way I might just WAIT until I can get Windows 98, which connected straightaway from within a VM (albeit only on wired Internet).

Performance is as good as in a VM despite Standard Mode graphics. DOS takes awhile to boot due to HIMEM checking extended memory, though - about as long as Vista. So much for an old OS booting faster than a new one. Add/Edit the following to your config.sys:

\HIMEM.SYS/TESTMEM:OFF

If you want to post your modem/hardware specs i'll dig out some of my old notes and we'll have a go of it.
There are a few other Resident EXPERTS here on older OS's as well such as Dusty and Sidewinder just to name a few...

Let us know.

Solve : Direct3D not working?

Answer»

Hi,
I recently tried to UPDATE my DirectX 9.0c to 10 with the webinstaller thing you download from their site. Ever since then my DIRECT 3d has not been able to work.
When I run the dxdiag, and test the Direct3D i get the following errors.

Direct3D 7 test results: FAILURE at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x80004005 (Generic failure)
Direct3D 8 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code)
Direct3D 9 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code)

Then when i Enable/Disable the Direct3D accelerator i get this error.

Hardware accelerated Direct3D 9+ is not available because the display driver does not SUPPORT it. You may be able to get a newer driver from the hardware manufacturer.

I've uninstalled my display drivers for my video card, and reinstalled them with the latest version following the instructions on the site.

I've found a few forum discussions using google with people that have had the same problem. They have diagnosed it as a corrupt DirectX installation. I have been unable to repair this because whenever I try to "Reinstall" it says that it detects a newer or equivalent version and doesn't need to do anything.

Here is the information from the dxdiag System Tab.
OS: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600)
Manufacturer: HP Pavillion 061
BIOS: Pheonix - Award BIOS v6.00PG
Processor: AMD Anthlon XP 2800+, MMX, 3dNow, ~2.1Ghz
Memory:2048MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

Also When i Click the Files Tab under notes this appears;

The file d3d9d.dll is a debug version, which will run slower than the retail version.

My Video Card is: ATI RADEON 9800Pro

And i downloaded this driver from the site;

ATI Catalyst™ 7.11 Display Driver for Windows XP Professional/Home Edition

Somebody please help me, I don't want to do a system recovery. Especially when i've done is try to install a new directX.
Get this, first:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secure-cleaning/DirectX-Eradicator.shtml
Then, reinstall.Quote from: Broni on December 14, 2007, 07:16:04 PM

Get this, first:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secure-cleaning/DirectX-Eradicator.shtml
Then, reinstall.

Is this safe?As safe, as computer world goes....Just create new restore point, before proceeding.I tried running the DirectX Eradicator 2.0, and it told me that my Version of Windows wasn't supported and exited.
I believe im running XP SP2Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any other way.Open My Computer/Help/About Windows to make sure SP2 is installed...Alright a follow up,

I downloaded a program called DirectX Happy Uninstall, This was able to rollback my directX back to 8.1 and then update it back to 9.0c. While it was version 8.1 i ran the direct3d test it failed with the same errors, as well as when i tested it in 9.0c.

This may have ruled out the directX problem and the real culprit could be my Radeon 9800 drivers. This would coincide with this error i'm sure.

"Hardware accelerated Direct3D 9+ is not available because the display driver does not support it. You may be able to get a newer driver from the hardware manufacturer."

Although I have unistalled and reinstalled my Drivers several times to the version stated before.

"ATI Catalyst™ 7.11 Display Driver for Windows XP Professional/Home Edition"

I'm not really sure what to do now other than reinstall them again....

*Also SP2 is installed, i reinstalled again last night.Did you actually uninstall your video card, restart your computer, and then install new drivers?Quote from: Broni on December 15, 2007, 07:31:28 PM
Did you actually uninstall your video card, restart your computer, and then install new drivers?

Yes, the procedure to do this on the site is as follows.
Goto Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, The You select "ATI - Software Uninstall Utility" Change/Remove. Then you restart, click the add/remove programs thing again and make sure all ATI components are removed, if they are all removed I install the Catalyst Control Center 7.11 and restarted my computer.

Then once again i goto the dxdiag and test the thing and NOTHING seems to have changed.

Another note I failed to mention before from the dxdiag was on the files I have a final debug version of a file and the system prompts a caution in the notes which reads;

The file d3d9d.dll is a debug version, which will run slower than the retail version.Try here:

Solve : How to identify DVD burner?

Answer»

I just bought a used DVD/CD burner and know near nothing about computers....but learn well. When I plug it into my Dell, it tells me that it is a Maxtor 2B020H1 IDE\Disk maxtor_2B020H1 (if I'm looking in the right place that is!). The sticker on the drive gives me S/N 223632402427 Model: dvd840-H09 Manufactured Date: August 2006
When I did an online search with the model number, all I CAME up with were HP DVD drives, but this drive does not have an HP logo on the front like the ones pictured did. How can I futher identify this drive so that I may intall any needed software and GET it working for me? I am running Windows XP if that matters.

PLEASE HELP!!!
Maxtor 2B020H1 is your hard drive.
In Device Manager anything listed under DVD\CD ROM drives?I can't find anything under CD ROM. When I boot up my computer though, it pulls up a black screen saying "SECONDARY hard disk drive 0 not found. F1 to continue. F2 to run setup utility. How do you have this drive connected exactly and how are the jumpers set ? ?I took out my old CD ROM and PLUGGED the DVD writer in exactly as the CD ROM was. And the jumper is set how ? ?
Look for a small plastic shunt on the rear of the unit next to the power cord...
Since it was used you may have gotten the shaft.
The only way to determine that is swapping it into another machine to see.

Solve : internal hard drive restore?

Answer»

Hello All,

I recently attempted to restore my entire hard drive to its original factory state- because I had a virus that was destroying my PC.

When I inserted my windows recovery CD- it helped none and actually made my computer worse! My computer does nothing except:

boot up-(at the boot menu I do have keyboard access)-

STARTS in safe mode-( but I have no mouse function nor keyboard function AFTER my PC HITS this mode)-

than after about 2MINS. my computer will reboot automatically than shuts down.

I am clueless as to what to do about this, and before I go out and purchase a new PC I was wondering if there were any solutions anyone could offer to help me out. I would really appreciate ANY help GIVEN.

NOTE: PC is a Compact w/ only 256 RAM, Windows xp home edition was previously installed.

MJTurn on your pc then insert windows recovery CD into your cd drive turn off power. Restart your pc again. Let your pc boot from the CD. Following the given instructions. It will erase everything in your hard drive and reinstall your pc for you. Your pc will be like brand new ones. Don't use safe mode to do this! It will not work in safe mode.

After you installed, be sure update your computer SECURITY patches from uncle Bill Gate, and install anti-virus, firewall, and adware (free from Lava Soft) programs to protect your computer from further threats. Stay up-to-date or you will get more headaches. Can't stay up-to-date? switch to iMAC, no virus or patch to worry. Just need to keep up learning a whole new operating system.

Good luck.

Have great holiday season! Quote

Solve : Problems installing driver on Windows ME?

Answer»

Hi there...hopefully this is in the right section.

I've been trying to install an X-Micro USB Wireless adaptor on my mums computer. I downloaded the Windows ME driver. I installed it and the program fully installed. The problem is it is not recognising the wireless adaptor. It doesn't even acknowledge it. I try loading the USB program but it loads up for a second and then disappears. It also never shows in my minimize tray on the bottom right hand corner.
I have tried reinstalling it several times and hopefully SOMEONE could TELL me a method to make it work. (Don't want my mum to be upset that her PC isnt working.)

Thanks for any suggestions.

Download the file(s) to a Floppy Disk and point the HARDWARE Wizard to look in A:\ when prompted. These files are located, in compressed form, on your WinMe CD in Win9x/BASE2 For WinMe ONLY

Solve : Transferring information from hard drive?

Answer»

I have a old computer with a failed power supply and I want to transfer the information on the old hard DRIVE to the new computer. How do I do it with no power on the old computer?Remove the HDD from the old computer.
Then you NEED to SET the jumper on the hard drive to slave...

Above is an example however your drive may be slightly different.
Then simply hook it up in your working machine on the middle connector of the IDE cable...connect the 4 PIN power cord and re-boot.
It will now show up in Windows Explorer and you can copy/burn your files to your heart's CONTENT...

Solve : help me out plz!!!!?

Answer»

i have beem having the problems in my mouse for a quite a long time.....at first i was using windows XP and i noticed at some times the mouse doesnt work and it shows a error code 24 in the device manager... i tried unplugging the mouse and reinstalling the drivers... but nothing seems to work out.... :obut this happens only at some times the rest of the times the mouse works just fine.... im sure it is not a problem with the mouse as it works just fine in other computer.....now recently i upgraded to windows vista but sadly im still facing the same problem.... but the thing i noticed here is when i GO the device manager in the mice and other pointing device if it shows as microsoft ps\2 then my mouse doesnt work amd the same error code 24 , but when i uninstalled the microsoft ps\2 drivers and when i reinstalled the com 2 port drivers,in the device manager mice and other pointing device if it shows as microsoft serial mouse and my mouse works just fine......this problems happens whenever i turn off and turn on my computer....... plz..plz... help me out.

Have you MADE any changes in the BIOS ?no i havent made any changes in the bios.....From Microsoft:

Quote

Code 24
This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)

Recommended resolution
The device does not appear to be present. The problem could be bad hardware, or a new driver might be needed.

Devices stay in this state if they have been prepared for removal. After you remove the device, this error disappears.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.

Not sure it'll help, but you can TRY running the Troubleshooting Wizard (if you haven't already).

You also mentioned the Com 2 drivers. Double check the settings for Com 2 in your BIOS.

If you can, get a hold of a different serial mouse and try that. If you're still having problems, it's possible there is a fault in the port itself.i have already done the troubleshooting using the wizrd...but it doesnt work. ......can u tell me what properties should be changed for com2 in the bios settings??Is there a reason you need to still use a serial port Mouse ? ?
Do you have PS2 connectors on this machine ? ?

I was wondering that myself. I was going to suggest ditching the serial mouse and getting a PS/2 or USB mouse. Just CURIOUS as to why the current one isn't working properly. If you remember back in the day of 28.8 modems you would remember how many things can go wrong with COM port setups...one day it's Grand the next day who knows ? ?i have only a ps/2 mouse but the strange thing is it works as a microsoft serial mouse.........They will sometimes be identified this way by Device Manager...replace the mouse with a new PS2 mouse.

Solve : IBM Trackpoint 4 Keyboard Driver (PS/2 connectors) for Dell XPS 410 (USB)?

Answer»

Hi.

I have a fairly new Dell XPS 410 computer (if it matters), but I have an IBM Trackpoint 4 keyboard with PS/2 connectors that I have connected to my computer's USB through a PS/2 to USB adapter. I use the trackpoint instead of the mouse.

I'm noticing that my cursor is frequently "running away" across the screen, much more so than the normal drift that's associated with the Trackpoint.

When I look in Device Manager, The Keyboard is named "HID Keyboard Device" and uses Microsoft Driver 5.1.2600.2825, dated 7/1/2001.

The Mouse is named "HID-compliant mouse" and used Microsoft Driver 5.1.2600.0, dated 7/1/2001.

I've tried another IBM Trackpoint keyboard, and it still happens, which leads me to believe I need a Trackpoint driver.

Can someone please tell me where I can get the latest IBM driver for my keyboard, or if this is even the right solution?

Thanks.Here's the driver:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=YAST-3WGLKY

However, you're connecting a PS2 port to a USB port, this driver may not work properly or even recognize that the keyboard is there. Thanks for the link. I'm seeing that these drivers date back to the Windows 95/98/2000 years. Now I know I'm getting old

I forgot to mention that I'm running XP and was seriously thinking about upgrading (?) to Vista. Any idea if there are any XP drivers AVAILABLE for Trackpoint keyboards?

Thanks.Trackpoint 4 USB drivers:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-4YPSMM

Again, not for XP, so I can't promise it'll work.

As far as I can tell, there is no driver from them for that keyboard to work in XP. These are the only two Trackpoint 4 drivers I can find. Older versions of the keyboard seemed to not have drivers. Thanks, I'll try this tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks. Many older IBM trackpoint DEVICES (the 390 models in particular), required no PS2 driver to work. All you had to do was a complete shutdown, connect the PS2 mouse, and reboot. There may have been some trivial features missing but nothing that would prevent use of the PS2 mouse. I use a PS2 mouse regularly on my ancient IBM 390E.It has nothing to do with a driver for a PS/2 mouse.

I'll be sitting here watching the screen and all of a sudden, the cursor takes off across the screen. Some drifting is inherent in the Trackpoint, but this goes far beyond that.

An IBM certified tech was just telling me yesterday that I needed to get a multimeter and check my cables, motherboard, and all that, saying he had found a ground leak problem this way. I don't think I have the ability to do that.

I was kind of hoping it's something simple, like a driver.Yeah, any device like that moves slightly from time to time without the user touching it. It does this as an auto-recentering kind of thing.

My old Toshiba laptop (and by old I mean old, it was a 486) had the same problem after 6 years. The pointer would just go nuts like that and shoot across the screen. Sad to say, the pointer quit working a short time after that started. I hope that's not the case with yours.

If you don't mind me asking, why are you using this with a USB adapter? Is there not a PS/2 port? No, there are no PS/2 PORTS for the keyboard. When I got my computer, I went to plug in my keyboard and went, *censored*? There are only USB ports, so that's why I needed the converter.

I'm familiar with the "normal drift" as I've been using Trackpoint forever. This goes way beyond that, kind of like you're describing, but it comes and goes.

The IBM tech dude thinks that there may be some feedback or conflict HAPPENING in that Y connector. From what he said, it makes sense. He gave me an idea to try, which was to use a seperate USB port for the keyboard cable and mouse cable, so I'm going to try that. It's a low cost test, cheaper than the keyboard I scored on ebay.thats ok dude!!!!!!!

Solve : READING MY CD? TOTALLY FRIED!?

Answer» sooo
first off i dont even know if i'm in the right thread, but i'm in some desperate need of help, and am about to lose my mind from stress.
boy, am i glad i found this place.

over the past year and a half or so, i've storing my writing on a CD-ROM.
and nearly a week ago, i had about 500 pages dedicated to several drafts of this novel i was writing.
well. idiot that i am: i was saving-editing-and resaving on the sort of disk that is originally intended for music.
which, i'm sure we know isn't supposed to be constantly edited.

anyway.
a few days ago, i tried to access it, so that i could finally print my final draft, and found that the disc wasn't reading, or even accessing.
a friend of mine, who works at an electronics company, tried to find it on his computer, and told me that there was no way to recover all of my work.
the file, and entire disk was fried.
and, as imagined: i was ready to cry.
i've been working on this FOREVER.
its some of the best writing i can RECALL doing, nevermind finishing.
does anyone have any suggestions?
because i promise, that if i need to start over, i'll have to cry.Welcome aboard

I'm SORRY for your loss...maybe not yet
There are some commercial programs out there, which promise data recovery from CDs/DVDs. They are not free, and I never used one, so I don't know, if they deliver.

However, you may try to start with small, free utility called "Copy It Anyway":
Quote
A program for copying corrupted files which can´t be copied the standard way because of some error on MEDIA the file is stored on.
http://www.freewarefiles.com/programs.php?ProgramID=7989&categoryid=9&subcategoryid=96
If, using this program, you'll be able to make a copy of that bad CD, maybe you'll be able to see some of your files on a fresh copy.

BTW...

It really doesn't matter, if it was music CD. Your mistake was, not to make any backup of it. Now, you know....grrrrrrrrr.oh goddd.
you just may have saved my life.
maybe.

i'll defunitely check it out, though.
and let you know wut happens.
maybe it can help someone else, too.

thank you so much!Okay.
Basically its a faliure.
Because it was on the CD, there's no way to access it, and no way for the computer to read what it's supposed to copy.
I appreciate the suggestion, though.

Any other ideas?DLoad and install the free version of ISOBuster
It will allow you to read CD's that haven't been finalised yet which sounds like your situation.
Copy all the files back to your hard drive in a NEW directory and test that they are still good and you can then re-burn them if needed.I'd say ISOBuster is probably your best bet here.

Out of curiosity...have you been using the same CD this whole time? CD's aren't terribly reliable (I've got several that are virtually useless because they can't be read anymore) and they don't have a very long lifespan, especially when used excessively. If I were you, I would invest in a flashdrive. They're becoming quite cheap now. If you're on a limited budget, you can easily get one holds about 50MB or so for only $5 at your local Walgreens. And you should always have another backup somewhere.

I wish you the best of luck and I sincerely hope you are able to retrieve your work. Thanks everyone.
I'll defunitely try it.

this may sound like an obvious question,
but where can i find the free download?
is there a certain LINK on the site, and i'm just missing it?never guys.
i just found it.
thanks again!

i'll let you know if this one works, also!sooo i think this one might actually have a chance.
just one problem.
i don't really kno how to use it. haha.
anybody have the patience to walk me through it?

basically what's happening, is i'm saving it to my desktop, and when i try to open it in a word document, it's saying that it doesn't support deleted file types. What program are you using to open the word document? What's the format? .iso? .tmp?Nice bump...Quote from: patio on November 28, 2007, 08:20:37 AM
Nice bump...
And only a week late. These newbies are getting quicker.Maybe, maybe not. When you make a straight file copy from a CD to the HD, MS, in all its wisdom, chose to make the copies 'read only." If you can remove the "r" attribute from the HD copies, you might be able to work with the files.

Solve : Display Problem with Intel GMA 82945G?

Answer»

Hi there,

I am having display problems with my Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 82945G integrated card. I play a game called "There" which is fully supported by my computer, and it works with my graphics card with no issues.. until I leave the game alone for 5 to 10 MINUTES. After I leave the game alone, the graphics display screws all up. Things on the screen pop up in different places depending on where I move my mouse. I can also replicate this screw up by opening up There and then also opening up a movie on my computer and playing it, and if I do that it immediately does it to me. The only way to fix the problem is so restart my computer. I have the latest drivers for my card, which is version 6.14.10.4543.

Please HELP,
-DONYOU may need better video card. The Intel video chipsets are one of the most basic chipsets on the market. Honestly, they're not really made for playing games, especially complex 3D ones. While they will run most games, many games have problems running on them. I'd recommend upgrading to an ATI or nVidia card.I was asking for help in repairing this problem, not suggestions to get a new card.

Thanks,
DonAs I can see from here:
http://www.there.com/
your game needs 32MB of video memory, so in real life, let say 64MB (advertisement vs. real life).
Your on-board video probably doesn't support more then 64MB shared memory, so in my opinion, if you have just barely Windows running, your game could play without a problem. But your video memory is not used only by your game, but also by other Windows components. And, if you also want to watch some video at the same time.....you can see where I'm going....

Yeah, that's exactly what I was saying. The Intel video chipsets aren't cut out for HANDLING most games. Even 3D games that aren't very demanding (LIKE World of Warcraft) struggle at minimum settings with Intel chipsets. They don't always work wonderfully. It's not a suggestion, it's a solution. There are lots of 3D features that ATI and nVidia can provide that the Intel chipsets just can't handle, especially with most games that are a bit heavy on graphics, shaders, lights, etc.

Solve : DMAC drivers??

Answer»

Hi recently my computer has been turning itself off during gaming sessions, i originally thought it was a HARDWARE problem but after months of checking I and 2 computer REPAIR shops cannot find the problem there. Ive checked the microsoft help and support thing that comes up once it reboots, which came up with this...
http://wer.microsoft.com/responses/Response.aspx/10/en-gb/5.1.2600.2.00010100.2.0?SGD=86cca202-62c9-4e99-8e78-26b9b1572fd9

So after looking at this I started checking through drivers and literally tried updating them all.
When I got to the direct memory access controller, the properties read that
"No drivers are installed for this device. "
From here I clicked RESOURCES where it read
"Resource settings:
This device isnt using any resources because it has a problem"
I tried updating them using windows and was wondering could this be causing my comp to restart somehow and should there be drivers there, oh and where do i get them.
Any help would be great thankyou
Re-install your motherboard drivers....re-boot.Right well the DMAC thing has rectified itself but im still getting the same windows error message relating to drivers :/, i didnt do the motherboard thing how would I go about doing thatThey should be on a CD labelled drivers that shipped with the machine...
If you can't find them (100 to 1 odds this is the case) then DLoad and install Everest Home.
Run a report and it will tell you exactly what hardware you have in that machine.
From there you can hunt down the drivers.Right that reports kinda large and im not overly sure which bit it is im lookig for, little help?Post the Summary info from the top...
The first 4 paragraphs should be enough.Computer:

You probably want the 4 in 1 pack along with the USB drivers just in case...Well no luck there, my comp is still turning itself off for fun dunno what it could be!The most common causes of random reboots are heat, bad RAM, power or HDD issues...
What exactly did they check when it was in the shop ? ?
