I can't contact their HELP bureau becausxe whenever i call them it says no one is free at the moment and i should call BACK later. My PC restarts itself randomly and this is what my TECH guy told me to do, but i don't know how to do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You in advance. You didn't say what version of Windows?
Why do you need to update drivers?
Why do you want to update the BIOS?
http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=P8P67 LE&p=1&s=39Let's start at the beginning. Are you trying to update your bios or your drivers? How are you trying to do it and what happens when you try? And as asked above, WHY are you doing this?

Answer»

I  have an issue with a Fujitsu Lifebook T2010. The previous OS crapped out so XP has been installed from an image we use.It is not the TABLET pc XP version so I am missing some much needed drivers specifically for the touchscreen feature.I managed to search around the WEB and install the Wacom DRIVER for the pen and finally got it to work but now I still do not have the driver for the touchscreen.Does anyone have any idea what driver it could be?
Thanks in advanceProbably won't work without the XP Tablet PC Edition.

Solve : Regarding Nvidia Drivers?

Answer»

Hi,

I plan on upgrading my GTS 250 with a GTX 570.
My current driver is GeForce 280.26 Driver.

Based on the site documentation, the driver supports both the GTS 250 and GTX 570.
Does this mean that I could just swap the old GPU with the new one and not do anything else?
Or is it BETTER to remove the driver before removing the old and reapply it once the new one is installed?

I don't have the new GPU yet and been reading up as a precaution before doing anything.
# I noticed there are a lot of driver related problem so I'm a bit cautious.

Current system: Win7 64-bit ENProbably, but it you put the new card in and the driver doesn't work, then it will still work enough for you to uninstall and install the new one. Quote from: quaxo on September 27, 2011, 06:21:55 AM

Probably, but it you put the new card in and the driver doesn't work, then it will still work enough for you to uninstall and install the new one.
You never need to uninstall DRIVERS.  Windows just won't use them if they are not needed.  In this case, drivers MAY need to be reinstalled because it's a different nVidia GPU.Even though the card uses the same driver, during driver installation the software interacts with the hardware. While I agree the old driver does not need to be uninstalled (since it's the same version), it's probably a good idea to reinstall it after you put in the new card. Thanks everyone for the responses, they're GREATLY appreciated.

Solve : Problems updating drivers?

Answer»

Hi
I'm trying to play a war game on my computer and it just keeps freezing. I am told I need to update all my drivers so I am in the process of doing this.
The problem i'm having is when I click to download them it's a hit or a miss whether they install properly.
Sometimes there isn't a "setup" file to click on and other times it simply fails to install.

It looks like I should download about 9 or so separate programs on the acer site.

Is there a tutorial that can help me with this?  I'm not even sure if i need to actually buy a video card or graphics card and install it on my pc. I would have thought such a thing would have come with it when I bought it.

I'm OPERATING on windows xp professional 32.
the computer is acer powerboy fh
thanks anyoneSimply downloading it will not install it. Unless you're using

What do you mean it "simply fails to install"? How do you know? Is it giving you an error message of some sort?

What game are you referring to?

Have you checked your temperatures? Freezing during gameplay can also occur from the computer getting too hot. Thanks for replying.

I initially went to acer.com (computer's an acer) and went to the drivers download section.
I gave them the computer make and model (Desktop-AcerPower-FH-) with microsoft windows xp professional x32 os

A list of drivers appeared that I could download via a zip file

I downloaded and extracted them one at a time.
I double clicked on the "set up" file (where I could find one) and here's what happened.

chipset driver=downloaded and installed.
audio driver=downloaded and installed.
lan marver driver =downloaded  but didn't install as I couldn't find a "setup file"
lan pronets driver= downloaded and installed.
modem liteon driver =downloaded but not sure if it installed (can't remember)
tv tuner hauppauge driver =not installed. tried to but wouldn't. Sorry can't remember what it said.
tv tuner leadtek driver = downloaded but no "setup file" so not sure how to install.
vga ati driver =downloaded but would not install  (the error said "couldn't find video driver")
vga intel driver=could not install (error said "your computer doesn't have the minimum requirments).
vga nvidia driver=downloaded but could not install. (error said "couldn't locate relevant drivers")
WIRELESS lan driver =downloaded but don't know how to install as no set up file showing.

I am trying to play napoleon total war through my steam account.

The game freezes soon into playing.

I bought the pc a few years ago and I haven't installed any hardware on it.

I don't have alot of money to throw around so I'm looking for the cheapest/free-est route to play the game.

Meanwhile,
When I right clicked the desktop and then clicked on properties and then setting, this shows under the display heading..  "RadeonX1550 Series"
So I downloaded this updated driver from
http://www.pcpitstop.com/drivers/download/Radeon~X1550~Series.html
and installed it.

Thanks for any help

You need these:
chipset driver=downloaded and installed.
audio driver=downloaded and installed.
modem liteon driver =downloaded but not sure if it installed (can't remember)

For the remaining ones, you need to determine which them is in your computer:

It will have either of these, not both. If the pronets one installed and your LAN port is working correctly, that was probably the one.
lan marver driver =downloaded  but didn't install as I couldn't find a "setup file"
lan pronets driver= downloaded and installed.

Only ONE of these should have been installed, whichever one matches what's actually in the computer:
tv tuner hauppauge driver =not installed. tried to but wouldn't. Sorry can't remember what it said.
tv tuner leadtek driver = downloaded but no "setup file" so not sure how to install.

Only ONE of these should have been installed, whichever one matches what's actually in the computer:
vga ati driver =downloaded but would not install  (the error said "couldn't find video driver")
vga intel driver=could not install (error said "your computer doesn't have the minimum requirments).
vga nvidia driver=downloaded but could not install. (error said "couldn't locate relevant drivers")

wireless lan driver =downloaded but don't know how to install as no set up file showing.

You need to determine the exact configuration of that computer so we can determine which drivers you DO need and why they aren't installing.
Hi,
It's probably best to take it a step at a time.
below in capital letters is what I did. I tried to install the modem liteon driver again and the problem occurs as described below. firstly I open the "setup.exe" file, double click on "run" and it prompts me  whether or not I want to install the modem drivers. I then clicked on "yes". It then looks as though it is installing (through showing a section of boxes slowly being filled horizontally, but as it gets towards the end it just DISAPPEARS and nothing tells me it has installed.

You need these
chipset driver=downloaded and installed.
audio driver=downloaded and installed.
modem liteon driver =downloaded but not sure if it installed (can't remember)

STARTING INSTALLATIOIN.
DOUBLE CLICK ON "setup.exe" file
CLICK ON "run"
ALERT!
"DO YOU WANT TO INSTALL MODEM DRIVERS"?
I CLICKED "YES"
A BOX APPEARED TO SHOW INSTALLATION IN PROGRESS. THEN BOX DISSAPPEARED.
NO MESSAGE TO SAY PROGRAMME HAD INSTALLED!!!Well, if you're going to use the modem, then test it and see if it works. If not, it's not important.

What about the rest of it?In order to check i'm downloading the right drivers I took the following steps.

I went to control panel - performance and maint.  - admin tools - computer management -  device manager and worked down them all and clicked on "update drivers" under the "driver" heading.

most of them didn't need downloading. below is the result.

SO ALL OF THESE IN THE FIRST GROUP  DID NOT REQUIRE AN UPDATED DRIVER AS NOTED BELOW.

I still have the same problem. it takes an age for the game to start up (if at all) then freezes.
Do I need to buy a peice of hardware and stick it into the back of the computer. I'd rather not due to money issues. Is there something else I can do to get the game working?

Thanks

You updated the graphics drivers which was likely the only ones you were told to update.
Have you checked for overheating of the CPU and/or GPU?
You can monitor temps with any of the following:
HWInfo32
CPUID HWMonitor
Speccy

Post a screen shot.Ok I downloaded HWInfo32 and ran it.
A box has appeared  but not sure what to look for.
the "thermmon" for the cpu are saying they are "OK"

During all the downloading that I did, an icon has appeared in my tray. when i open it, it says "ati catalyst control centre " and has headings such as "display manager" , display options, 3d color etc etc.
I'm not sure if I need to do  something with it in order to get it working properly. I've not seen anything like it on my system before.

Solve : Graphics driver problems??

Answer»

That's that, RIGHT, and it fixed whatever happened in the device MANAGER, but I'm still getting the same message when I attempt to play the game. Hm.go to CONTROL panel>add or REMOVE programs and see if you can repair your Sims 3 installation. The fact that the exclamation mark is gone means that your graphics card is working without a hitch.I'll try uninstalling then re-installing and see if that helps at all.The DELL Inspiron 1525 is a laptop computer... and you can't upgrade its graphics card.

I want to cleanup all the previous mouses and keyboards devices I put in one of the USB ports, but I don't know how to do it. So many of them I don't know which one to do. ...I want to cleanup all the previous mouses and keyboards devices I put in one of the USB ports...
There is no reason to do this.  Why do you want to do this?Just incase I find out in the future one of the drivers I installed were corrupt and I didn't know.
This is a case of trying to fix things that aint broken.

Right clik every instance of USB roots and hubs and select remove/uninstall...
You will RECIEVE a warning message...ignore it.
Re-boot...they will automatically be re-installed.

Yes, but how will he know if they are corrupt ??    Quote from: thehandyman on September 02, 2011, 09:02:56 AM
Just incase I find out in the future one of the drivers I installed were corrupt and I didn't know.

And a good question might be how you expect to know in the future. You don't need to do this, but i'll tell you how anyway. Use this: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html

Press the uninstall button on each device you want to uninstall. BUT AGAIN, YOU DON'T NEED TO!

The reason I decided to answer is because it annoys me when I ASK a question and people say Why?

Solve : Error by installing my grapic driver Intel® G43/G45?

Answer»

Dear CH,

I just got my computer, downloaded Steam and got the error message that my DRIVER isn't supported.
So i looked at the internet for the driver of my Intel® G43/G45.
I got error messages that is saying:

" The file that is getting installed isn't validated for this computer. Ask the producent of the computer to get the right operating system. The installation is shut down".

I downloaded DRIVERS, intel, hp, all the same errors.

I got windows 7 Proffesional. 32 Bit.
My computer is a HP Pro 3010 Microtower PC.

When i look for an update of drivers i get a schedual:

Product Detected    Intel® G43/G45

Current Driver Installed    8.15.10.1872

A customized computer manufacturer driver is installed on your computer. The Intel Driver Update Utility is not able to update the driver. Installing a generic Intel driver instead of the customized computer manufacturer driver may cause technical issues. Contact your computer manufacturer for the latest driver for your computer.

I found additional CD's called operating system DVD: W7 Proffesional.

CD:

- Supplemental Software (office 2007 trail)
- HP restore plus! disk 1 of 3
- Operating System DVD (w7 proff) Disk 2 of 3
- LANGUAGE pack DVD for W7 Disk 3 of 3
- Operating System CD Microsoft W XP proffesional service pack 3

I hope you can solve my problem. If you need more info, please reply on my topic.

Emile Massau
Just to be certain. Is this the site from which you sought the drivers? How old is this computer? It is this statement that concerns me re your attempt to create functionality with "Steam" and your computer "A customized computer manufacturer driver is installed on your computer. The Intel Driver Update Utility is not able to update the driver. Installing a generic Intel driver instead of the customized computer manufacturer driver may cause technical issues. Contact your computer manufacturer for the latest driver for your computer."
Have you tried the SUGGESTION contained in that warning?truenorthYou can get the latest driver for that here:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=nl&prodNameId=4047666&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=4047665&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=4053#11360

But to be honest, that's designed as a "business" computer, and Intel CHIPSETS are just not made for gaming. Even if you do get it working, the results will likely be less than satisfactory (if you can get any Steam powered game to run at all, a lot don't support Intel 43/45 chipsets).

Solve : Oh dear, another audio driver deletion?

Answer»

Hi

I have accidentally purged my supposedly unused program files but have also lost my audio driver.  I'm running XP; within sounds and audio everything is greyed out.  I've no idea what sound card I have; I've tried running DirectX diagnostics, but it said no sound card was found.  Any ideas, please?

Solve : Dual Boot Woes?

Answer» HI All,

I am attempting to set up dual booting for my laptop, I already have WINDOWS 7 home PREMIUM x64 installed and need to install XP.

I have been following the instructions found if you google this, and I am at the stage where I need to use Nlite to slipstream the SATA controller drivers for my Laptop into the XP Disk.

The problem I am having is understanding where to find the driver and identify what part made by whom do I need?

I have used everest and Belarc and am no closer to understanding what I need to find the driver!

My laptop is HP Pavilion dm3-1025sa

Any help would be appreciated.

Solve : Router encryption???

Answer»

i wish to know what router encryption is because i cant get my OLD imacg3 to connect to my n signal router and i was told by the ibookguy from youtube to change my encryption to WEP or none. can someone eplain this to me?These are wireless security settings for your router. They can be labeled as level of security since they are described on vulnerabilities and functions.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_security
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi_Protected_Accessso according to the article WEP encryption is just less security, so its not worth using airport on my old imac G3 because hackers will break into my network? is that correct? If you check your wireless card properties on security tab, what type of security encryption is available? The router has CERTAIN encryption features that you could match with the imacg3 airport card. If there is not any WEP/WPA type of feature under the wifi card, then you are left with having none or an open wifi connection.  You need to configure the properties of your wireless connection. Right Click the “Wireless Network Connection”, See picture above.
Select “Properties”.After you open the properties of your wireless connection you should see a screen similar to the one below.

Solve : nvata issues?

Answer»

Here is the basic RUNDOWN, GOT a comp that errors with bsod and its always something to do with nvata.  the system is running win xp,  after reading up on this error I have alleviated an overheating issues to start, then it continued, (while replacing fans and adding extra fans I also replaced the cpu) so next i updated to the latest sata/ide drivers, and it continued, replace the memory, continued, finally replaced the harddrive.  upon replacing the harddrive when trying to reinstall xp it errors at loading windows screen with nvata error.  so out of curiosity i TRIED loading win 7 on it.  when it gets to expanding windows it errors out with the nvata error.  Im assuming at this point its gotta be the motherboard but before i TELL this GUY hes gotta replace that after replacing the other stuff i would like to see if anyone might offer some other solution. To me this very much sounds like the point of replacing the computer versus all these replacements of hardware may have been passed or soon will be. Do you really think it  is prudent to continue replacing things at this stage? truenorthFrom Our Archives...Wow all that replacement stuff due to a software issue. "  Im assuming at this point its gotta be the motherboard but before i tell this guy hes gotta replace that after replacing the other stuff" If this is a commercial transaction i see some money being returned. Solve : Audio Fades In and Out Possibly a PCI Device situation?

Answer»

My audio keeps fading in and out. Sometimes it sounds like its coming from a cave.

The computer uses IE8 with Windows XP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 3. 32-bit I believe.
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 2.40GHz 2.00GB of RAM'

My modem is from BrightHouseNetworks and says, Motorola 'Surfboard' SBG6580

I'm not sure if its related, but there is a yellow '?' for 'Other Devices' in Device Manager. If I click to expand, it shows a yellow '!' for 'PCI Device'.

The PCI Device Properties say, 'The drivers for this device are not installed." (code 28)

Under 'Sound, Video, and Game Controllers', none of the items in the pulldown menu have a red 'x' or a yellow (!)

PCI\VEN_11AB&DEV_6145&SUBSYS_58428086&REV_A1\4&2D8B019B&0&00E4
I looked up 11AB and 6145. They are related to Marvel. I went to to a few sites and couldn't find any downloads.

I've updated Windows.

I've adjusted the volume on the media player and website that hosts the video I'm watching.

I've downloaded VLC player to rule out if Windows Media Player is the problem.

I've tried reinstalling the 'Legacy' audio driver, but it keeps asking for a disk. The only disk I have is the original Windows XP Pro disk. I believe my computer is 32-bit, if that matters. The disk will begin to run, but it won't find the driver I need.

Re-install your Motherboard chipset drivers from the Driver CD that shipped with the machine...
That should correct it.I appreciate you taking the time to help me. Very cool.  Do I un-install the chipset currently on my computer, or is it not there to begin with?No need to...
They will automatically re-install over the top.I have corrected the yellow '!' under 'PCI Device' in the Device Manger, by reinstalling the Marvell
6145 PCI Device Drive (Marvell_61xx_1.2.8000). The yellow '!' is no longer there, and no red
'x' or yellow '!' show up in the Device Manager. Even the hidden devices are clean.
My audio however, STILL fades in and out. I have listed all of my specs below, unaware of which ones
are important for correcting the problem, so I've listed everything. I went to the Intel
Driver Download page and searched 'd975xbx2'. There are a number of choices to download, which
I've listed below, along with the Intel Driver download website.

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&keyword=%22d975xbx2%22

To correct my audio, could someone please tell me which exact driver/s, I need to download, or update.
I have listed the choices below. And so you know, I could have made a mistake on the search page as to which avenue to begin searching.

My Specs:
Custom Built
d975xbx2  INTEL
Windows XP Pro (5.1, Build 2600)
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU  6600 2.40GHz (2CPUs)
2046MB RAM
IDT AUDIO1  Device ID: HDAUDIO\FUNC_01VEN_8384DEV_7621SUBSYS_8

Under Hardware I have listed: IDT HighDefinition Audio CODEC  Location 65535  (Working Properly)
                                           Legacy Audio Drivers    (Working Properly)
Legacy Video Capture Devices   (Working Properly)
                                           Video CODECS    (Working Properly)
                                           Audio Codecs    (Working Properly)
                                           Media Control Devices    (Working Properly)

My MIDI music playback Default drive shows "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth

In the control panel, there is an icon labeled 'IDT Audio Control Panel'. It will not open.
Not sure if this matters.

I have set all the volume controls back to default.

I have plugged in a number of different computer speakers and headsets all having the same results of fading in and out.
Sometimes it sounds like an echo.

Solve : Hard Page Faults and DPC Problems?

Answer»

I've been having a number of AUDIO PROBLEMS lately - skipping, getting stuck on a sound for half a second, etc.  I did some google work on the problem, downloaded LatencyMon, and found that the culprits are high DPC times for ndis.sys and a LARGE number of hard page faults for svchost.exe.  I haven't installed any new hardware lately, so I'm not sure what COULD be CAUSING this problem, which only surfaced in the last month in a computer that's been working great since I put it together in December.  Also, I'm a bit out of my depth when it comes to things like DPC times and hard page faults, so I've kind of run into a brick wall in the google solutions department.  Any help would be much appreciated.Did you make any changes to the computer right before this started?

Have you updated your network adapter driver?

Have you run the system file checker?

Solve : DevMgr has 2 errors, usb's broke, cpu @100% constantly?

Quote from: Max Maximus on August 10, 2011, 04:55:56 AM

Your right. Pretty cheap right now. Got a quad core, 6gig, 1T hd HP desktop at Best Buy on sale for $425 and added a sweet 25" LED monitor for another $200.

So the old girl is sitting on the bench in the basement. I still can't BELIEVE that couldn't be fixed. There was nothing wrong with that computer, and I still can see no damage to any of the usb ports. The 4 in the back only had the printer plugged into one, and were NEVER used by n e 1. How would an old timer like me go about replacing this motherboard thing you speak of, if your up to helping me try and fix this thing still CC...

I told you computers have never been cheaper, even at BestBuy.  I didn't get my HP laptop from them because they don't carry this model & a similar one is $100 more.  This one is really easy to access, the whole bottom comes off by releasing 2 spring latches.  Just added another 4GB RAM today.
I don't know how I can help fix the old one by remote control.  There is something wrong with it, it's just not worth all the trouble for you.  If I had the board sitting in front of me, I might be able to SPOT something.  Many TIMES there is no visual indication of any problem.  If you're just trying to learn about computer hardware, you could find a replacement motherboard for less than $100 that uses the same CPU & RAM.  Effectively, you'd be building a computer.  I've done this several times, with computers thrown in the trash. Thanks guys. I'm not sure what to do I guess. It sounds like I should give up, but before that I may as well mess with the bios whatever the heck that means. Mental, can you give me the steps required to accomplish this? And yes, CC and I have tried everything else. If you read back through this thread you'll see all the spec for the pc, including diagrams that CC posted for me, as well as I believe the replacement model for the MB. I did some searching for these after he posted, and I have a micro center pretty close that has everything you could ever want to repair, I'm just not sure of all the steps. I may do some searching on YouTube to see if I can find some visual examples of how it is done.

Thanks Again

It has the same Asus motherboard, A8AE-LE.  Probably came out of an HP.  Model says:  A8AE-LE SOCKET 939 OEM
For $55, get it.Ok, I got my eye on a couple on ebay and I'll let you know if I pick something up. A lot of them there come from China though. Are you sure we can put it together again?

Hey, you wanna WORK on something else while I'm shopping for the old desktop? I have this laptop I'm on now, it is a HP ZD7000 I bought from a guy off craigs list the end of last year and he upgraded it to win 7, but it only had a gig of ram. So I bought another gig but it wasn;t matched tith the old one and i kept blue screening. so today i got a matched pair and it wouldn't even boot when i installed them and went right to a bs before it booted. now i am really confused about that issue. you wanns discuss it here or start a new thread?

Solve : Cannot detect drivers!?

Hello,
So RECENTLY I have reformatted my Dell XPS 8100.
Unfortunately now it cannot detect my network adapter (No INTERNET connection).
I've been looking for an driver for my network adapter but I cannot figure out what my adapter simply is.
I USED AIDA and Everest, however they marked my motherboard, chip SET, BIOS and network adapter as N/A. Furthermore, there is an exclamation point next to my ethernet controller and simple communications controller.
I'm kinda clueless so any response will be helpful!
Keep in mind that my reformatted computer does not have an Internet connection.

Can someone help please? Is this your computer?

truenorthlink didnt work, i got the printer working, it was connected via a parellel cable, used a usb a-b instead and the windows update driver and it worked!!! thanks for you response anywayDon't know why that link does not now work (doesn't work for me now either). It did when i posted it. In case you do not have the manual for your printer by way of compensation i am including a link to it for possible future use.

I am once again trying a link to what may be your computer.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enterprise_(computer)
This is exactly the same one i posted in my original post. Which for some reason does NOT work via the CH post but does work if the FOLLOWING google search is performed "enterprise computer" ?
It is the 1st reply in over 61,000,000 responses.
truenorthBoth linx work here...Very weird. Trying to access the actual reference (picture etc) of the enterprise computer (my search parameter) from the thread (both refferences) does not work whereas using the route of the google search it always does. When i go via the CH post it does bring me to a wikipedia web site basically asking me if "did i mean-etc" but certainly NOT the site Google found. truenorthLinks are not the same:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enterprise_%28computer
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enterprise_%28computer%29
%29 is ")"CC, I know that you are trying to tell me something but unfortunately i don't know what it is. My 2 links in this thread (to me as i look at them) are absolutely identical. Also in BOTH instances when i accessed the page via a google search they are the same. All i did to present them in the post was : while the page was open i highlighted the URL and clicked on "ctrl/c" then inserted the link into the thread via "ctrl/v" . A process i do often. However even immediately prior to creating this post (answer to you) i clicked on BOTH my CH links and do get to a Wikipedia page but not the one i created as described above. All was done in Opera by the way. truenorthYou didn't hightlight the closing parenthesis when you did the CNTL-C.Right, once in AWHILE the CH auto-link does not work. You have to use the link TOOL yand ou enclose it in the [ url] and [ /url] things. When i highlighted the URL link it was on the actual open page of the desired sight . Therefore as is the case on any URL in the address window there are NO parenthesis enclosing it. At least on any web search i have ever done. As further examples you will note the following link
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DocumentIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&contentType=SupportManual&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=25521
which is from my earlier post above. Which is the link to the O/Ps printer manual. It was created exactly the same way and it works fine(at least for me it does) whereas  the 2 for the Wikipedia (which are identical) do not. truenorth
P.S. Thank you though for PERSISTING with your observations and unless there is something i am missing it still remains a mystery why in all past instances and with this one exception it has always produced a correct usable link.Test links after you post.  Computers are only human.

Solve : Pesky avi file that crashes?

Answer»

Hello,

I've got an .avi file that's quite problematic. Whenever I open the location that the .avi file is in (Which is directly in (D:)), my entire system freezes. Because of the freeze I am unable to delete the file.

I am using a laptop, OS Windows Vista Home Basic.

Any suggestions? So as i understand it . Even if you just go to the drive "D" and select the folder (without even endeavoring to access the particular .avi file) the computer freezes.Correct?truenorthAnd since it's a laptop please explain what D: is....a 2nd partition ? ? an external HDD ? ?I'm sorry for not explaining adequately. :s I'm not so computer savvy.

The file is not in a folder in drive D. It is directly in drive D itself, if that makes any sense. So, when you enter drive D, you will see the file.

This might sound really stupid but I got my computer in Taiwan - everything's in Mandarin. And I'm a Taiwanese that can't read Mandarin. So I'll try my best to specify. As far as I know there is no second partition (to be honest, I don't know what that means so I really doubt I'll have it), and it's not an external harddrive. My computer is an Acer. If it helps, it's the Aspire 2920Z type, with a 12 inch screen. Quote

The file is not in a folder in drive D. It is directly in drive D itself,
Do you have other drive partitions or letters(drive c:) on that hard drive other than drive d? How about running other avi files? We still do not know what D: is...
I have drives C and D. Running any other .avi files works completely FINE; I know it's just that one file that's causing me problems. It's a movie file.

How do I describe what drive D is? It's inside the laptop itself, part of the internal harddrive.Try scanning your laptop with MBAM and SAS. Download and Install both and run malwarebytes first then proceed with Superantispyware after performing a complete scan. Make sure to update first before doing a scan.
http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
http://www.superantispyware.com/
Do you have any other scanners installed? Badly encoded or corrupted AVI files can cause freezes. Also if you are hiding file extensions then a file which was really somename.avi.exe could cause all kinds of mayhem! Such files are often obtained from torrent and other peer-to-peer networks. There is a free app called GSpot which can analyze avi and other multimedia files and give useful information such as if the file has a malformed header or is broken in some way.

But is it opening the the avi file that crashes the system, or opening the drive it is on? If the latter, when did you last do a disk check?
Sqashbee, Do NOT be concerned with being unfamiliar with computers. At some time we have all been there. We are asking questions only insofar as we are trying to get a handle on the EXACT nature of what is going on so we can help you. truenorth
P.S. Assuming that it is only when you click on the file (as opposed to accessing the "D" drive) what happens if you "right " click on the file? Does it still freeze the computer or do you get options?jason2074: I will download both of those programs and run them. The one scanner I have on my laptop is 2010 Kaspersky Internet Security, and it RUNS regularly on a schedule.

Salmon Trout: I'm PRETTY sure it's an .avi file but I will try GSpot anyway just to be safe.

truenorth: Thank you, and I understand. It's just frustrating when you don't understand some of the computer lingo at times. :s

The below is everything I know so far of the behavior of my .avi file. My system will freeze when I:

1) Right or left click the file (Though I can get the drop down list if I right click, but not enough time to click on anything before it freezes)
2) Drag the file to the trashbin (well, attempt to, because it always freezes before I can succeed)
3) Search the file through a program; ie. In VLC player, I click 'open file' and search for the .avi file. And just simply having the path to the file opened will cause my laptop to freeze.
4) Load drive D with the file directly in the window. This is a bit weird and hard to explain, but I will try. If I shrink the window of my drive D enough so the affected file is not the first few files that show up when I load my window, it doesn't freeze my laptop. I don't know what happens if I let it completely load, as I've never tried that. I just know this method buys me enough time to access other folders in my D drive, and once I enter any of my other folders, away from where the affected file is located, I am safe from a freeze.

Thank you everyone for your help so far, it is greatly appreciated!I am thinking that Salmon trout may have put his finger on the issue. Would Squashbee best best SERVED to move to the Virus/malware forum at this point. As i believe the issue will only be resolved if this offending file can somehow be removed from the computer.truenorth Quote

What is load drive D in windows? Do you mean click or double clicking drive D? Are there any external or USB flashdrives involve?

Solve : Driver for pic lan card??

Answer»

I bought a wireless adapter for a PC I built a while back and it has worked fine up until last week or so.
I can no longer access the interent through this card or if I attach an Ethernet cable to the back.
I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get the driver to this card I bought as I have lost the disc or if anyone knows what could be the issue. There are wireless networks in the house and the ethernet is connected to a working port.

Here is the ebay LINK to the card I have. Sorry it was all I could find.

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/PCI-54M-2-4Ghz-Wireless-Wi-Fi-LAN-Network-Adapter-Card-/160616046263?_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D2%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63&_qi=RTM742988#ht_2243wt_905 Quote

Too many available connection I presumed...
More info. is needed on all the involved devices and computer such as brand/model/specs..

To add to what Jason said, it's unlikely it's the wireless card's driver if you're UNABLE to connect through a cable EITHER. If that card you linked is indeed the card you have, it works completely SEPARATELY from the WIRED connection.

Solve : need an EXPERT !! plse help?

After reinstalling XP on my laptop, i have no sound. Hours turned into days into weeks..Tried all the known & obvious..What i do know is i'm pretty sure i need the chipset for motherboard  mod. #  QCI-EF6 think this is why my realtek audio always has a yellow exclamation mark in device manager..uninstalled/ reinstalled, tried other drivers, tried "everest" system which leads me to motherboard chipset problem..from there i should be able to find a driver that works.. I have no CD & the computer is an icom which are no longer around,(liquidation)..
By no sound i mean nothing is recognized in control panel, no icon, nothing..Got a code 10 cannot start..and i'm not certain realtek is my driver anyway, but with the chipset installed maybe the hardware wizard will handle it from there.??   will trade my soul for the cure
plse email   [email protected]              many thanxPlease provide the model/BRAND of your laptop and the original OS it came with. Did it also work before reinstalling?
"icom ability" brand on laptop lid, model # 1300A  Intel celeron M350. Not certain of original OS..i think XP ?? but i did have sound before reinstall. I bought it 2nd hand for $300.
Thanx mentorOk, you mention chipset installed. Are there flags or marks under your sound device? Please post them and confirm is it a Realtec AC'97 or not? It seems the support has been gone since 2007 but hopefully we could find a sound driver for your icom laptop.I have yellow exclamation on realtek AC 97 audio & yellow ? mark on ethernet & pci modem..When i CLICK on the realtek it say "this device cannot start ( code 10 ). It is enabled but also states next to location,  PCI bus 0 device 30 function 2...for what its worth.. Have been using driver detective to auto download when i try instal / uninstal etc. then i reboot as requested only to go back to no sound & the yellow in device manager..tried to disable volume in bios start up..no good, then reset to default..
The"everest" scan still reveals nothing under chipset when i click on motherboard so i tried to download from Intel site to no avail..still no chipset..at a loss mate. thanks for your thoughtsif your under the cliff when its thrown, its yours.. Quote from: beatlejuice on June 08, 2011, 11:13:30 PM

Please be advised that Jackar Australia Pty Ltd (also known as Icom computers) was placed into administration on 6 September 2007 and subsequently placed into liquidation on 3 October 2007....
Because you reinstalled WinXP, the drivers for network adapter, sound, etc. are lost.  Since the company is out of business, identifying the laptop specifications will be difficult.  Try:  Speccy

Get Realtek drivers here:  http://www.realtek.com.tw/Downloads/Don't know to what extent you have tried to do research on your computer however a very preliminary search on GOOGLE does bring up quite a lot of hits re specs and drivers for it. Perhaps this one will get you started as it seems to relate to both issues. I would say patience is going to be a virtue here.

Best of luck, truenorthCheers for the reply guys..Yes, paitience or sheer stubourness prevailed..I have since fixed the issue from 2 sources..Intel realtek AC'97 is now working. Not sure what the prob was, but i stopped the H/W wizard from installing then chose my own folder to select device, that & running some Intel software for chipset maybe..I have other issues now concerning black screen boot up, ( been there a while ) but may start another thread for that. Solve : xp 64 bit wireless internet!!!!!?????

Answer»

I have a xp 64 I have tried belkin and linksys cisco and can't find anyone who offers a wireless adapter that has driver for xp64 anyone? please help Have you tried TP-Link? The TP-Link WN322G supports 64-bit operating systems. (on a SIDE note, i recall installing 32 bit drivers on a 64 bit system correct me if I'm WRONG...)
http://www.tp-link.com/products/productDetails.asp?pmodel=TL-WN322G
have this adapter right in hand...As an alternative, do not use a device that requires drivers. Your 64 bit OS has drivers in place for then ETHERNET card in your system. So use a Ethernet AP device.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_access_point

But AP devices  are often priced out of range fr many of US. So we RESORT to forcing a economical Wireless router into behaving like a AP device.

Solve : sony vaio VPCSB1V9R notebook bluetooth driver please help?

Answer»

hello people
ive purchased the SONY VPCSB1V9R. it is a really great device and, to make it even greater ive CHANGED the hdd to SDD and therefore must reinstall windows.
it comes ok, but the official sony bluetooth driver exe does not makes the job: "generic bluetooth driver" and  is shown in the device manager after installation, which is not finished. result is that device manager has three unknown devices "unknown bluetooth device" or smth
it does not connect to the mouse or phone.
official broadcom software does not find any bt adapter turned on
system is win7pro x64
all i can do with other version of the same driver as found on the off site, is to run it's exe file. after all over it says: all ok, please PRESS finish. still no result. ive tried with three different drivers...

COULD you save my soul in any way possible?I am doing some research on your laptop re the blue-tooth compatibility and have found 2 sites that contradict each other on that score. One says definitely and the other says not available. What does your manual say on that score?

Solve : Verde 275.33 driver for Nvidia Geforce 310M problem?

Answer»

I am using a Nvidia Geforce 310M graphic card and I've attempt to download the driver and do the installation. And whenever I did the installion, I would always see this message:
The graphic driver could not find compatible graphics hardware

So how do I solve this and make sure I can install the driver? Are you sure you got the right driver?

Did you get from here?  http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

What operating system?yes I've check many times already its that driver and it is written that it supports Geforce 310M graphic cards. I'm running Windows 7 Home BasicDownload Speccy
http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download

After you've downloaded it double click on the file to start the installation. Once you've installed it, open it up. At the top of the page go to File and then Publish snapshot. You will see a prompt asking you if you want to proceed with publish. Click yes, then copy to clipboard. Right click on an empty space in your reply box and click paste. here u go:
http://speccy.piriform.com/results/sqVQjnMZXEsnOuazxbRlZZlYou have an Acer Aspire 4740 notebook right?

LAPTOP drivers should always be obtained from the laptop manufacturer's website. This is where you need to go for drivers:
http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers

Speccy shows that your video driver is already installed. Is that not right? Do you have errors in device manager?Yes I have a driver installed but unfortunately it is a very outdated version what I want is the nvidia geforce VERDE driver 275.33 from www.nvidia.com website. That is the latest version driver which is available for the nvidia geforce 310M card and which is also what I'm LOOKING for.The only thing that is out dated would be if there is a fix for certain glitches you are encountering from the previous version. You don't need a newer driver version for as long as your current driver works according to its expected result. IF your laptop came with CD drivers, just used the CD installers. And if you are going for the online SUPPORT to get the correct drivers, just look for the previous driver version that worked before. Only you need to obtain the latest version if a specific problem is listed and will resolve your issue.I had the same problem with my current GeForce 210-I SOLVED the problem by installing the 197.13 Drivers, and have been using them ever since-the 275.33 drivers just caused my screen resolution to go all fuzzy and put me into 4-bit color mode. That's right, 4-bit.
On a second note, how is your graphics card branded? For example, MSI sells an "MSI GeForce 210" that is based on nVidia's technology and is therefore reliant on nVidia drivers, or at least nVidia-based Drivers. As with all laptops the drivers should only come from the laptop manuf. site...

This was already mentioned above...

pligwigl - please disregard my suggestion to get the driver from ATI. Laptop drivers should always be obtained from the website of the laptop manufacturer. I missed that we were dealing with a laptop. Please follow the link in the post above this one.Alan, I have a PC not a laptop. Should I therefore follow the advice on your first post. Thanks.

PligwiglOkay, back to the original thought. Yes, get the latest driver from the ATI website. Also, please do not start new threads for this topic. Just post here - I'll see it. I merged your post into this thread.Thanks. I didn't at first see how to reply without a new post, but I do now. Thanks for the link, Computer_Commando.Alan, my computer has 8 ati2dvag files. Is this the file I need to uninstall?

Solve : D-Link wireless card install?

Answer»

I just recently purchase a HP PAVILION P6750z computer with Win7 OS. I'm trying to install a wireless D-Link DWA-556 PCIe adapter card. The card installs very easily into a PCIe slot. However when I boot the computer after installing the card, I get the windows blue screen. If I remove the D-Link card and reboot, everything is working just fine. I believe I am having a driver problem (not SURE) because I did find on the D-Link support site something about using an Atheros driver. My question is, if I can find the correct Atheros driver, how do I install the driver and get it to work with the D-Link adapter when I can't get a clean boot with the adapter card installed? Any help will be appreciated. ThanksTry installing the driver first. If you do not have the installation software for your device look here:  DWA-556 Xtreme N PCI Express Desktop Adapter

Once you arrive at that page...click the Support Resources link and then DRIVERS to locate the driver you need based on your operating system.

This page also includes the manual for your device, as well.To install the driver before the card, where in the windows OS do I install the driver file so the boot will find the driver file? ThanksThe driver installer should be an .exe file, isn't it?See attachment

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]To be more SPECIFIC...I'm assuming you're in the USA?

Download the Version 1.40 driver to a location easily accessible on your PC...Downloads, Desktop, etc.

Extract the file to its default location.

Navigate to the Setup folder and double-click the Setup.exe file to execute it and install the software/driver(s) for your hardware. The driver file is an .exe file. Running the D-Link driver .exe file before installing the wireless card SEEMS to have worked fine. I still wonder why the instructions with the card and on the D-Link site still only have you installing the card first and then the driver from the CD. It would be nice if they had something on their site to recommend installing the driver first if there is a problem. Can't answer that question for you but, it's always a good idea to install the driver, first, before adding any new hardware.

Glad you have it working...

Solve : Can Java interfere with a graphics tablet??

Answer»

Ok, so my graphics tablet one day just lost all pressure sensitivity and has pretty much become a glorified mouse. It's fairly new, so I don't think it's worn out. I replaced the battery in the pen and reinstalled the drivers, but it just doesn't work. The only changes to the system I can think of that were made when the problems started was that I updated Java. Could that be the problem? And if so, how do I get back to the PREVIOUS version of Java? I checked the manufacturer's site for driver updates, but I can't find any.

My tablet is a Monoprice TWA60. My Notebook is a HP G-71 running WINDOWS 7 64-bit.

This is what I get for buying cheap hardware. I swear from now on I'm only getting Wacom. But until I can afford a new one, I would really like this one to work.

Any help would be greatly APPRECIATED!Ok! I figured out the problem and it had nothing to do with Java. (I'm an illustrator, not a computer programmer!) I'm posting this in case anyone else has this problem and needs help. The problem was Windows Automatic Updater kept overriding the manufacturer's drivers. What i had to do to get it back was completely uninstall the device, turn off automatic updates, and disconnect from the internet. Then reinstall using the manufacturer's disk. Now it WORKS just fine.

Solve : Joystick sign/unsign?

Answer»

I am not sure if this is the right section but...
Is there a way to turn off or sign off my joystick when I am DONE playing with it, without disconecting it from the computer? Because it has a bright blue light that is great when playing but bugs me when I am not playing. And it has some problems with connecting when the computer so it will be nice not having to disconect it. Any program maybe that can do that? Quote

Is there a way to turn off or sign off my joystick

Joysticks could be turned off via the game option itself. But not sure whether it is just like any flash drive or external hard drives as a plug and play device which is automatically detects or autoruns and use a safely remove hardware option when turning off.

Just like any plug and play device once successfully turned off, you would still need to unplug and replug the device to make it work again. The problem was that it needs to be plugged before the game has been started So how to turn it off via the game? There's not really any way to do what you're looking for other than unplugging it. Games can't turn on/off the joystick itself, just decide whether or not it will accept commands coming from it. There's no easy way to do this in Windows EITHER. Is this a USB joystick or the old kind that connects to a joystick port? Quote from: quaxo on June 05, 2011, 08:03:19 AM

Its USB Cyborg X JoystickThe only easy way to do that with a USB joystick: unplug it. Normally, they don't have POWER switches on them to shut them off, and if that one doesn't, the only other way is to unplug it. Even disabling the USB hub in the hardware profile won't stop the hub from giving power to it.

If you don't WANT to unplug it and the light bothers you that much, cover it with something, hide it under your table, close your eyes, something... but there's no way to do what you want unfortunately.

That's just poor design on their part. Some companies include a feature in their product software or by a hardware switch to change, reduce or turn off lighting (like my Logitech G13 and Sidewinder keyboard), then again, some don't (like my Roccat Apuri).Duct Tape...

Solve : Dell Inspiron 1525 Wireless Driver?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 which is unable to connect to wireless networks. I installed the wireless driver (using driver CD) but it didn't work. I also downloaded its driver for windows XP from Dell website but it didn't work too. It is unable to find any wireless network. could you please help me how to fix it. My operating system is windows XP.

ThanksDid you turned on the wireless switch for the laptop to START detecting wireless network? Look on the right-side panel beside the USB port connectors.Hi Jason. Thanks for the answer.
Yes the wireless switch is on. It shouldn't be that simple. Quote

I installed the wireless driver (using driver CD) but it didn't work
Did Win Xp came with the Dell Inspiron or Vista? Can you provide the link where you got your wireless card driver? Moving forward, are there still yellow or red MARKS under device manager specifically the network adapter? The manual I saw mentioned about a recovery partition(not recovery disc) in Win Vista. Please look also under BIOS settings for any network information for enabling/disabling your network devices.

Edit : When turning on wireless network, does it post any message why it could not connect? Assuming you had able to install the correct driver.Which one did you install?

Solve : Microphone Missing - Biostar MCP6PB M2+ running Windows 7 32-bit?

Answer»

I have a system that I upgraded from Windows XP Pro SP3 to Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit, and the audio driver from Biostar for the MCP6PB M2+ as well as the driver from Realtek both work perfect for SOUND, but show that there is "No Audio Devices Are Installed" under the Recording Tab, under Sound, in Control Panel.

My system has 2 hard drives in it that I can swap between Win XP and Win 7 by shutting it down and moving Power and SATA connection between drives. I know that this is a driver issue and not a hardware issue because everything runs fine on XP, but under Win 7 there is No Recording Device Detected and states "No Audio Devices Are Installed" under the Recording Tab, under sound, in control panel.

Anyone know of a solution for this other than to use Windows XP Pro drive for when I need to use the Microphone + Speakers, since Win 7 are Speakers without Mic?

Below are screen shots from control panel showing that there is Sound Audio set up, but No Recording  =(

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Is this it?
http://www.biostar-usa.com/app/en-us/mb/content.php?S_ID=387

Drivers and manual are there.Yah, thats where I got the Biostar supplied driver

Operating System: Windows  Vista x86/ Vista x64/ Win7 x86/ Win7 x64  6.0.1.6299 2009-11-02 [62.91 MB]

And at Realtek they have a driver that is like 84MB or something around that size that is newer that gives the same result of No Recording Device, when the Biostar supplied older driver is upgraded to newest from Realtek

Originally I TRIED the Drivers Disc that came with the motherboard, since it has a control panel of its own for detection of devices. Under Windows XP, you plug in a device and it pops up a window asking if its a headset or speakers and if speakers options for 2.0, 2.1, 5.1 etc. This feature is missing in Windows 7 for all 3 sources of these drivers. I think it also supported re-mapping of ports in XP where you can reach behind in the dark and plug into wrong port and it asks if its a Mic, Headset, or Speaker Pair...in which you could use a MIC port as an audio port and an Audio Port as a MIC port. But I might be getting confused with my older system which was a Fatal1ty gaming motherboard that was great in its time, but the socket 775 only supporting up to Pentium D 3.2Ghz wasnt enough power for my needs, and I know for sure that this board had an audio riser card that had every audio option you could ever need including optical audio. (Wife was glad to see that red glowing rig retired for a non-LED bling unit )

Worst comes worst, I could install a different sound card into the one PCI slot, but I'd rather try to get this running without band-aiding it with other than integrated sound. Right now I have a second NIC in the PCI slot that I use more than the need for a Mic. Also seen USB Audio Card-Like devices now that act as a portble sound card powered and operating off of USB port.

Here is what I could do to band-aid this I suppose if all else fails instead of having to give up my single PCI slot to install a different sound card. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829128004&cm_re=usb_sound-_-29-128-004-_-ProductNORMALLY one uses the drives given by the motherboard maker rather then the chip maker. The motherboard maker may make some subtle changes that are not covered by the generic drive from the chip maker. This is by design.

BTW, it is easier to swap boot drives by just going into the BIOS and selecting which hard drive you want active. Quicker and you can do it with power on. But opening the case a pulling cables on and off will damage a drive sooner or later.

I think there is some way you can use XP drivers in Windows 7. Not sure. Looking around I did not FIND a clear answer to this issue. I guess you already tried the XP drivers in Windows 7.

1.  True.  However, I have found that Biostar never releases updated drivers for their motherboards, especially Realtek who seems to update them every month.  The Realtek drivers are "all inclusive", i.e. every chip for a particular OS.  That's why the download is so large.
2.  Agreed.  Why swap cables?
3.  I have no idea why XP drivers work & Win7 drivers don't.I chose to go the route of swapping cables mainly because 99% of the time I am running Win 7 and 1% of the time I need to run older apps that dont play well with Win 7. Also because the last time I set up a dual boot system with 2 drives always connected a virus came in on the newer OS and took out not just the primary drive for that OS, but also destroyed the data on the second drive with an older OS.

Its been a long time since I got nailed by a virus, but I like the physical isolation so that if 1 drive gets nailed, I can move over to another drive until I have the time to rebuild the troubled one.

I would have gone with a removable drive bay, but this is a minitower and I like having Dual DVD-RW drives. If I had to swap more often between the XP and 7 drive, I'd definately sacrifice one of my 5.25" bays for a removable drive bay to avoid damaging a drive.

I have also seen people complaining on google search about this issue before posting it here about Biostar not staying up to date with drivers. Another interesting fact is that the driver when installed shows a path stating VISTA in the path even though I am running 7. So I think they are already using old driver that is not necessarily forwards compatible with 7 when it might work well with Vista.

I think I am going to see if that $13 USB sound adapter works as a band aid I guess. I tried to contact Biostar support and they stated that the warranty support period for my board expired in April 2010 after buying it in April 2009 and that the board was designed around XP/Vista support and there is no further support for Win 7.Yeah. At $13 it is not worth the time to pursue this any more.

BTW: This problem with drivers is harder than what I thought. Just now saw this come up on CNET, Interesting. It explains why the drivers have to be made to new standards. Microsoft has found that virus attacks get into loose drivers.

Wish Hardware driver makers Knew this!!!!! Windows 64-bit offers a feature called Kernel Patch Protection, which protects the Windows kernel from unauthorized changes. Maybe the hardware companies would make better drivers that don't Damage the Cabs in windows 64 bit systems.

So then, when buying a new motherboard, make sure they have the 64 bit drivers ready to go. In the future, the 64 bit OS will dominate. (I hate to admit this.)
Just figured I'd post that this USB sound adapter works perfect. Now I can use Ventrilo and Skype. Audio quality isnt bad. Clear and clean.

Solve : Modem trouble, need to update? not sure hardware version.?

Answer»

My Aunt just got cable internet service INSTALLED a few days ago, however when it was installed her husband was home and did not know the password to her computer.  So the Tech could not check everything. She did not use her internet at all and has gone on vacation. I am house sitting for her and I brought my computer over. I hooked the net into my comp and ran a speedtest.net test. I was getting 750Kbs down. and 50Kbs up. It was okay enough to do some things, but when i attempted to stream a video or download anything I would get a MAX of 91Kbs down. I wasn't sure what was causing the problem so I tried all the normal things, replugging stuff in, restarting, I power cycled the modem a few times. All to no AVAIL. I went home and brought my modem over, with that hooked up I am getting 27Mbps down and .9Mbps up.

Having figured out it was the modem, I looked up information on firmware and drivers for it.
She has a WebStar DPC2100
there are SOFTWARE updates for the modem (which I hope will fix the problem) however, Some are only for hardware revision 2.0.
I can not find any information on how to tell which if it is hardware 1.0 or 2.0.Call the cable modem supplier and ask them. truenorthUsually, there is something on the label on the bottom of the modem.the label has the S/N, MAC, model number, date of mfg. but doesn't say the hardware versionalso, when attempting to access the modem menu I get this:

The image “http://192.168.100.1/” cannot be displayed because it contains errors. That is the IP address and again i suggest that you call the cable company which i presume supplied the modem. truenorthI know what it is, Why can't I access the modem menu? I was told That has the information I need.the cable company won't do anything because I don't know all the ACCOUNT information (My aunt is out of town can't reach her)According to what I can find online, if it says DPC2100 on that label, it's version 1. If it says DPC2100r2, it's version 2. Okay, thank you. I never saw that online. I'll give it a try

Tried it. Works now. TY quaxo.

And *censored* you Cisco

Solve : exclamation point device manager-display?

Answer»

Hello,

In my device manager I have an unwanted exclamation point in a yellow circle in
display adapters-video controllers (vga compatible).
I just reinstalled xp on a gateway 5310s.  I'm almost positive this is my motherboard (everything there looks exactly like my MB).

http://www.ascendtech.us/itemdesc.asp?ic=MB4GWAUGSBURG

there are supposed drivers available for download here:

http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?st=pn&param=1008368

Instead of botching up my computer over an annoying exclamation point, I THOUGHT it would be wise to get help from experts.  the computer is working fine right now.  there is no indication that there is a problem (other than the exclamation point).

I have belarc advisor and everest installed, but I thought i'd WAIT until you asked for info, so as not to overload the thread with unneeded clutter.  I will be keeping a close eye on this thread.

I really appreciate the help as always.

You're not required to install ANYTHING, but I assume you can only view VGA mode (640x480, 16colors).
Your model is here:
IntelVideo4308.exe
Intel(r) Express Chipset Family Video Driver Version: 6.14.10.4308
Gateway 5310S Desktop Computer [Part #1008368]

Computer_Commando,

I installed the driver, rebooted, and was greeted by a desktop that was 1280x1024.  Everything was so TINY, yet so clear.  You were right on the money again.

Thank you again kind sir
take care, and we'll see you again!I was wondering about this as well. I have the same thing going on, a bunch of yellow exclamations under display adapters in the device manager. Since it seemed to work out good for you, I think I will track down the drivers and see what happens. Thanks.
