Solve : another hair-pulling driver(?) issue?

Answer»

Hello! Name is rob (obviously).

So im going to keep this to a nutshell.

I got this really old and *censored* laptop from my buddy, doesn't even have a battery. I took it because i have hit a gigantic speed bump of life. Now the problem i am having with it:

It is a Toshiba satellite a110 with no working sound. According to the system, there are no audio devices installed. Ive gone through tons of drivers trying to fix this issue (figuring the problem existed previously, i re-formatted it. fresh install.). I know for a fact that it is realtek (I have so many driver issues with this company in the past) but i have tried all that i can think of by them. Ive had a few blue screens trying. Whats confusing me more is there is an unknown device stated "Modem device on high definition audio bus". Figuring this is the audio not wanting to work thats what i have been installing the drivers on (since there are no other devices with problems). Before you ask, yes, i used Toshibas drivers. they all worked (wifi, video), but not the audio. Im starting to worry this is a hardware issue. But since i have no information on how the problem occurred or started, I have no idea if there were any warning signs HINTING to either HW or SW.

After removing the panels on the bottom searching for a chip with a serial i found "rtl81000cl" on a realek chip. Google lead me to some Spanish site with "realtek audio drivers" ('97 or something, it installed multiple drivers on the computer with the same name). With those failing as well im completely tired and drained. its past 5 am. I just want sound...

Windows xp sp3

i would really love some ideas.

And if it is a HW issue, Any stores offer usb Audio adapters? :{ Quote from: simplyrobbie on May 19, 2011, 03:17:38 AM

That is an internal 56k (dialup) modem.
thats even worse news. the fact that it cant even detect any audio hardware at all leads me to believe that its not a driver issue...I presume you are using Windows? I guess you already looked in Device Manager for any device that has a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark. This will at least tell you if XP recognized the device, but just couldn't find the driver. You may have to install the chipset driver (have you done this?) before Windows will recognize the audio hardware, so don't give up yet.

HOWEVER, this is around $25

Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Amigo II USB Sound Card & Headset Adapter

i belive the chipset drivers have already been installed (ATI SMBus). Just updated the bios, going to try to re-install the chipset drivers.

(p.s. i asked stored with usb adapter because i cannot play online) Quote from: simplyrobbie on May 19, 2011, 01:49:17 PM

Well, considering I don't even know what country, and what location in that country, you live in, (I am in England) I can't really help you with a store. Have you heard of Google? Or CIRCUIT City if (as I suspect, I wonder why?) you are an American? They have plenty of USB sound cards from $12.99 online price. Maybe you can use Google to find their store locator page and a telephone? (to call your local store.) (and ask them) They have the Sabrent USB-SBCV USB sound card for $12.99 online price.

canada, ontario. google gave me only online retailers. although im pretty sure my turtle beach headsets run on the computer solely through the usb. problem is my friend has it, will have to get it back some how.

Also ati no longer supports the chipset drivers (i assume since i cant find anything that supports my hardware on their website)

For the case of nVidia (& Realtek), the latest drivers are provided by the manufacturer of the chip, not the card manufacturer.  The drivers are not generic, but "all inclusive", for virtually every chip they ever made.

Solve : Multiple problems related? Sound, scanner, USB?

Answer»

My problems may have been caused by trying to install an old Logitech webcam that was not compatible with my HP Pavilion (p6213w).  A few days later I noticed that there was no sound.  With the help of HP support chat I downloaded and reinstalled driver for Realtek High Def sound, but after 3-4 hours and 3 different techs, still no sound!!

The LAST tech told me I should back up my files and reformat!  I plugged in my PASSPORT Elite and it wouldn't work either! (I tested it on my laptop and it's not the Passport that doesn't work).  (However, the USB does work with a flashdrive, charging ipod, etc.)

THEN I had to scan/fax something and I get a "scanner not DETECTED" message EVEN though I have an All in One and the printer works!  I tried copying something pushing the button on the printer and it works (in other words the scanner DOES work, but not with the computer).

What's going on here, anyone know?  Are all these problems related to trying to install the old webcam?  And how do I begin to fix this?

Thank you from a very frustrated lady.At first , what is your webcam MODEL  ? Secondly , what is your operating system and computer specification , try it

Solve : Loading Device Drivers in DOS?

Answer»

I am currently in charge of automating my company's imaging PROCESS. I am running into a issue where I am using WinPE from a USB bootable drive, and getting the batch file to LOAD the DRIVER from the thumb drive. LET me explain, The machines that I'm imaging have multiple partitions and differ from each machine. What command can I use in WinPE DOS to call the USB drive regardless of it drive letter? Is this possible? This is really a DOS question.

A batch file knows its own drive letter. It is CONTAINED in the special variable %0.

%~d0 expands to the drive letter (with colon).

Hope this helps.

Solve : Bluetooth Device?

Answer»

Hi guys. I have a problem with my bluetooth device in my Dell laptop. When I'm trying to send a file via bluetooth, there appears an error message with error code 28 SAYING "The DRIVERS for this device are not installed. There is no driver selected for the device information set or element. To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver." This error happens just for some recipient devices and some other devices are able to connect to my laptop easily. I've downloaded the RELEVANT drivers from Dell website for my laptop and installed them successfully. The problem seems to be of technical kind. Any recommendations?
All the best.I am guessing you have a bluetooth adapter plugged in via USB... what make/model device is this?

Did you install the CD that came with this device prior to inserting the device as most manufacturers suggest to make sure you are using the correct OEM driver and not a generic driver from microsoft? Quote

Dell laptop
Which? Some have bluetooth built in and there is not be a problem unless you did a OS install without getting the drivers.
Or did you add a Bluetooth device?
Was the device working earlier?

Without more details, members here have to guess. This is not a Chat room. You NEED to give a lot of information with each post. Does your laptop have a little blue light the indicates you have blue tooth?

What recent changes did you  make? Quote

Most probably a different OS and not an appropriate driver installed or not available since changing or upgrading. Or it could very well be on the known devices end either that needs to enable file transfer restriction or not known or compatible. If there are no errors or flags under device manager, have you tried running sfc / scannow to check for other errors?

Solve : Windows XP sound drivers??

Answer»

Hi,

I need help finding a reliable (and free) source for downloading the proper sound driver compatible with Windows XP.  Any help is greatly appreciated!Get the driver for the web site of the sound card manufacturerOkay.  How do I find out who that is without having to take the computer apart? What's the brand and model of your computer?1) Look in Device Manager
2) Download and RUN Belarc AdvisorOkay...I looked in Device Manager, and it tells me I don't have software installed for the sound card I have.  So apparently it was lost when I had a virus last week and had to re-load Windows XP.  And since we've moved since the last time I had to do this, I can't find the software disk went to this.

Any recommendations on a good audio software that's compatible with Windows XP? Quote from: Allan on July 26, 2010, 05:37:57 AM

Get the driver for the web site of the sound card manufacturer
One thought!

In Device manager, Click on the + sign near Sound, video and game controllers and see sound card listed.

if not, it could be listed as unknown device/other device. Right-click on the entry for the "unknown device" and then select "Properties". In the "Properties" window, click on the "Details" TAB and let me know the string displayed under Device ID.

For example: PCI_VEN13782 etc.

This will help you to find the manufacture and name of the sound card. ANd you may find driver LINKS USING the device IDs

May be it helps Hi,

Okay.  Under "Audio Codecs" it says ROOT\MEDIA\MS_MMACM.

Under "Multimedia Audio Controller" it says PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24D5&SUBSYS_B0101462&REV_02\3&13C080C5&0&FD.

I think it is Realtek AC 97 Audio, I'm 95% sure it is.

If you have the audio build in to your motherboard you can do a search on that and find some of your drivers.Yay!  Realtek it was, I downloaded it and everything works fine now!  Thanks much, everyone!

Justed turned ON email notification for post replies.

Glad that the issue solved after installing the relatek drivers. The device Ids helps us a lot.

Solve : Determining Manufacturer/Make of DVD-ROM Player??

Answer»

Hi-

I'm running XP Pro SP3 on an old Dell Dimension 4100.

I've been having problems with my DVD-ROM player for about 2 months now. It plays music CDs most of the time (Creative Sound Card/PlayCenter), but my whole system freezes-up when I try to run mixed media CDs (I don't know about DVDs - I don't use it for DVDs anymore, so the software isn't installed).

I think I have a Samsung SD-612, but I'm not positive. My original Dell receipt tells me only that it's a "12X Max Variable DVD ROM Drive Factory Installed"; Windows "System Information" tells me I have a Samsung SD-612; Dell.com with my service tag no., it tells me I have a Samsung SD-616. And there are no markings, labels, etc on the drive itself (I opened up the case).

I've been doing some research on this, and apparently others have had the same problems with the SD-612 that I'm having. They all said they had run a firmware update which solved the problem. And there is a firmware update available for the SD-612 (12X) that "corrects the CD-Text capability of the drive". There is no firmware update available for the SD-616.

I have a few QUESTIONS about this:

1. Is there some definitive way (maybe an app?) to determine for certain which DVD-ROM player I have?

2. What happens if I run the firmware update for the Samsung SD-612 and it turns out that's not DVD-ROM player I have? Will I totally screw my pc and/or DVD player up?Open the case and TAKE a look. From original question "And there are no markings, labels, etc on the drive itself (I opened up the case)."

I did open the case. There are no markings at all. Maybe look in the BIOS to see if it's listed. What does Device Manager SAY?Thanks for the replies Linux & Broni.

I agree. But just out of curiosity, what happens if I run the firmware update and it turns out that it's not an SD-612? How badly would that screw my pc and/or DVD player up?

What exactly is a firmware update? I assume it's a bigger deal than just UPDATING a driver? The only DVD update that Dell shows for the Dimension 4100 is the SD-616B.  It's likely you have a different model as indicated by Device Manager.
Another way to determine which one is if it's a 12X or 16X drive.  Nero InfoTool might work:  http://www.nero.com/enu/support-nero8-tools-utilities.html

Something's been screwy with my computer and the Dell documentation since I got the computer in 2001 (although I didn't know enough about computers at the time to question anything). I bought a Dimension 4100 and the case is definitely a Dimension 4100, but the included paperwork has the 'Description' as: "DIM XPS-Z SERIES, PENTIUM III PROC 866MHZ"

Try finding anything at Dell on the XPS-Z series... Meanwhile, if what I have is a Samsung SD-612, according to Dell.com, they were only used in the "Dimension XPS B___r" whatever that is.

Thanks for the Nero link. I've downloaded it and will give it a shot. I may come back again for some advice before I do anything about the firmware update - I'm really nervous about it....

Nero says it's a SAMSUNG SD-612 too.

Should I create a Restore Point before I run the firmware update? Will I be able to Restore/revert back from a firmware update??I would not bother flashing a 10 year old DVD-ROM drive. It is probably nearing the end of its service life. They cost pocket change now. Like 12 UK pounds (around $20) or less. In fact this is a very old PC. Worth around $20.

No need to create a restore point, and you can reflash the firmware with an earlier version if you have the file available. Don't turn the power off during the flash, or you'll brick the drive. But see my post above.

Firmware does not modify Windows, it modifies the drive, so creating a restore point would accomplish nothing.  Besides, you can't update the drive firmware from within Windows.  You boot to a floppy disk & run the flash program from the floppy disk. Many manufacturers provide Windows firmware flashing utilities. I used to update the firmware of my LG DVD-RW from Windows.

Solve : Computer fast in Safe mode?

Answer»

Hi, I just installed a new Dell ST2420L monitor, this monitor is a great deal but we sure pay for it in the lack of information included with it, even the CD supplied needs an expert to use. (I have 40 years experience)  I need drivers to get this monitor to work outside of "Safe Mode"  There is a problem somewhere, I have an Asus P5AD2-E Premium M/B, ATI Radeon X700 pro 256 Mb ram. My problem is that when not in safe mode the monitor keeps shutting off, going to black randomly, also the internet is very slow when in regular mode, in safe mode everything works fine.  When I go to the Dell site I am tricked into downloading a program that I would have to pay $49.00 CD to get the drivers it says I need.  I have paid in the past for programs that don't deliver. Would you please help me?

Thanks
BrandyFirst of all, the display should be plug and play. Second, the cd you got with the display should include the driver. Third, how is the display connected (DVI or Analog)?I have the display connected DVI to HDMI, the only cable I have other than VGA,  I had this problem for a while now, I bought this monitor because my Viewsonic CRT was getting too hard on my eyes, I had tried my wife's Acer LCD and that's when I first began to get black screens on the monitor, I had been using VGA on the CRT monitor without problem, although I noticed two things happening, the opening of webpages was much slower on my computer in regular mode, but quicker in safe mode,  and in regular mode the computer tower fan would stop after about 10 minutes of use in regular mode but not at all in safe mode.  I have updated ATI drivers on the AMD site but things only get worst, I am now using the original drivers on the ATI CD that came with the display card.  I am contacting you using safe mode since it works OK.Monitors don't need drivers to function properly.  If display is working better in Safe Mode, the issue is the ATI Radeon X700 pro.  Get the latest drivers for your OS.

ATI is now owned by AMD and I have had no luck on their website either.

Please keep trying, I will check back here often.

Brandy

I finally found a version that will load, but I still don't think it is working right, webpages take up to 20 seconds to view, in safe mode they take 2 to 3 seconds at most.  This happens even if it is a page I load exit and reload, so I will keep looking for the problem.

I have used three monitors, two graphic cards, tested the power supply, downloaded a BIOS update from ASUS, I'll give it a go again tomorrow.
Thanks for your suggestions
BrandyFinally found the correct driver because it's now considered a Legacy product:  Catalyst Software Suite ver 10.2  75.6MB download.
Radeon X700 series is listed under the Release notes.Thank you very much, I will give it a try, I just cloned my computer to a new HD and am going to switch drives when I finish this reply.

BrandyI was really impressed with Acronis True Image, I had used it for backup and never used it besides that, today I deleted my backup and then found out I could not make a new full backup, I don't know why, so I decided to clone my computer drive onto my backup SATA drive, I simply let the automatic function take over and it made a complete duplicate on my backup SATA drive, I then had two drives with the same information, the only difference was the SATA drive is much larger and faster.  I removed the old drive then installed the new drive and rebooted everything was there and worked exactly LIKE before, still fast in safe mode and slow in reg. mode.  I did install the CAT 10.2 without any problems, so far the monitor has not gone black, but my problems always are worst when I boot up in the morning, so I guess we'll see tomorrow.

Thank you very much for helping

God bless you

BrandyGood Morning to everyone,

I booted the computer and everything appeared OK, when I came back to it an hour later it had a black screen, I had to reboot to write this, I had last night changed a setting in the bios concerning the hard disk, the default was 32 bit transfer - disabled, and I had enabled it to see if there was a difference, it ran all night enabled, before shutting down I reset it to the default, disabled, I am not sure what this is for but I now have it set to enabled.

My upgraded so far are, new hard drive, changed graphics card and latest drivers, upgraded AVG 9.0 to AVG 2011 with all updates, new cables, new monitor (Dell ST2420L) connected DVI -  HDMI, I have even added 1GB ram, giving me 4GB TOTAL ram.

I want to include more information but need advice on what is necessary

Thanks again

Brandy

1.  Enable 32-Bit Hard Disk Transfers
Black screen could be due to Power Save settings:  Control Panel---Power Options

2.  You didn't say if you are in Safe Mode or Normal Mode. Thanks for the information about 32 bit trasnfer, I was and am in regular mode now, so far eveything runs fine, but really slow, example, my wife's computer is wireless to the router I am wired to and she access the same sites as me in 2-3 seconds, while I sometimes take 30 seconds, even accessing within my PC seems slow and unstable, example, when I access the ATI  screen to make adjustments or even to look at the settings the screen appears in stages, I have never seen this before. Catalyst Control Center takes at least 2 stages to appear, and if I drag it across the screen it is smeared until after I drop it somewhere.   Is there a test for the motherboard, I have an Assus P5AD2-E Premium.

Solve : 2 questions-HP DeskTop and Emachines Desktop C/DVD Drive?

Answer»

I am trying to replace a CD/DVD Drive on both of these computers. I purchased a new one from Best Buy but doesn't seem to be compatiable with the wiring harness already installed in the Desktop. Is there specific information I should look for on the original drives to bring to Best Buy for new drives? if so what should I be looking for.

On the HP when I try to start it up it is showing a "Boot error". I have tried everything I can think of which isn't much to GET it to run properly, it started doing that after I got up from my desk one time and the CD Drive was open and I BENT it. I really don't need this Desktop for much anymore as it is getting old but I do have a DOZEN family reunion pictures I would like to try and retrieve from it if possible. Is there a way to get any pictures from that too a new desktop or CD or ??

Thanks. T-REX
See image below. Do the connections to the old drives in the desktops look like one of these pictures, and does the new one you bought look like the other picture? If so, which?

The drive that is in there now looks like the bottom PIC with the 2 connections, however those 2 connections don't fit into the new CD drive. Does the new CD drive look like the top one? (That is, with a wide connector with 40 pins) What is its make and model? Perhaps you could tell us the make and model of each computer and each drive, old and new?

I don't have that info with me as I am at work. However both appear to look like the bottom picture, just a different width connection, They both look like they just need to be plugged in but wont' fit. Thats why I was thinking maybe there was a specific drive I was suppose to buy instead of just any old Cd Drive but I was told by one of the Best Buy employees that it would work.I am back at work tonight, please let me know what information I should get for you and I will be glad to do that as you are taking your time out to help me. I downloaded onto my computer and put it on my flashdrive. When I get to Device MANAGER, where do click on from there? I WENT to sound, VIDEO And Game Controllers. I was right-clicking on Codec Drivers to try to update the drive with the new one. (I re-installed Windows.) When I go to F: Drive, I don't see the drive anywhere! I even tried to put it under "My DOCUMENTS" and "My Pictures", but still don't see it. I'm so confused with this. Any help WOULD be appreciated. Thanks.

Solve : Driver for Dynex DX-UBDB9 Cable (serial to USB)?

Answer»

Trying to connect handheld GPS to PC via this cable. OEM is serial, PC doesn't have a serial port.  Ive looked everywhere for a driver for this cable (Serial to USB). Ive FOUND other manufacturers but not Dynex. Could they possibly be compatible. Will it hurt to TRY. Any help will be appreciated.I have the same adapter and the drivers are available at www.dynexproducts.com under "Customer Support".  I've been trying to get an external modem to work with Windows 7 using the serial/USB adapter but the drivers on the website will not work with that OS.  If anyone has any suggestions for that please let me know.  thanks! Dynex doesnt have an update.  I also have the Dynex DX-UBDB9 cable, and found the following driver that
works like a charm in Windows7 (even at 64 bit).

The driver you NEED is this one:
PL2303_Prolific_DriverInstaller_10311.z ip

Download it at this site:
prolific.com.tw

Remember to unplug anything plugged into your USB ports, install the software, reboot the computer, plug in
the USB-Serial Cable (but disconnect it from what it is attached too, ie, a GPS unit), and windows7 should recognize it.

then plug in your GPS, or what ever into the cable and you should be good to go.

Yes thanks Ryder.. It does now recognize the USB to serial cable however it doesnt recognize the external modem that I have.  It's a US ROBOTICS 56K external, Model 5686.  It will not pick up that the device is there at all.  I've tested it on another computer serial port directly and it works fine.  I want to confirm that ryder2008's RECOMMENDATION is correct.  The drivers from "prolific" support the Dynex device under Windows 7 x 64, and I was able to download waypoints to my old SportTrak Pro.

The only downside is that I no longer have an excuse to get a new GPSr.

Solve : Please Help, Connect a burner and restart player Vista Home Premium?

Answer»

Hi all,

My PC is running Vista Home Premium

I have spent the past 7 days trolling this great site for answers, but even though there is some great help, it doesnt seen to help me

I have had my PC for over 3yrs and its never played up like this before. My PC came with a NERO burner which was built in. This worked fine up to a week ago, when for some reason it said it had run out....

I search my program files and found a short cut which worked fine, but then a few days later it came up with this message: If you are running Nero burning software via windows remote login, you might not be able to access your drives for burning. This is a security restriction from windows.

I run Nero as admin and the message stops (like I READ on here to do), but still i cant seem to burn CD's. I best say it still plays films and I can burn dvd's via ConvertxtoDVD4, Nero only wants to burn images when ASKED to do music and Windows MEDIA player says Connect burner and restart program. Oh and I also tried to download other CD/DVD burning software and this wont work either, basically wont find a player.

I have tried, reinstalling the software for Nero, patches, updates (which there isn't any for my version), Going into registry editor, But cant find upper or lower filter, looked for In Group Policy Editor, but don't think its on my version of Vista. tried every link offered up to the part after its scanned then tells you it wont fix unless i cross its circuits with gold! Updated the drivers via devise management again nothing, restored computer to earlier restore point and run FULL scans and system mechanic has tryed everything it can do also.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated
Billy
Is your computer a laptop or tower system?  Nero is software.  Nero does not make hardware, so your DVD drive is some other brand.  Take a look in Device Manager; it should give you a clue regarding the brand of your DVD drive.

To confirm a point in your point, you can burn music to a disk.  Is that right?  And, what other burning software did you try?

Quote

This is a security restriction from windows.
Did you get some Windows updates just before this problem started?  What antivirus and anti-spyware protections do you have?Seems System Mechanic has sorted the problem out for now. Seems it may have been a reg problem as I ran the optimize program and it did a full system count and woola!

If anyone else has the same problem I do fulling recommend  http://www.iolo.com/system-mechanic/standard/ Cost a little for what it does and what it can do is completely keep everything in order...just wish I had run that part of the program earlier  System Mechanic has some bad reviews at http://download.cnet.com/System-Mechanic/3000-18512_4-10030183.html and I know many of the forum members here have a negative view of it and of registry cleaners in general.

Solve : Computer issue. Not sure exactly. Driver is what im thinking?

Answer»

I want to make sure who ever can help is on the same page as me so heres the story.

Bought "Sim Coaster" though amazon.com and soon found out it was from a 3rd party. (later was confirmed it was not pirated) I first inserted the disc (no box, just a disc) and nothing happend. My computers processer was WORKING, i COULD hear it. But nothing, so i went into my computer where the game was noticed by my computer but seemed to be as a folder of some kind. I could open it only and GET into detail about everything in the disc but the game wouldn't "run" only "open". i would try the individual programs like the setup and the installer, but it wouldn't work, eather i was told it was missing a file or the installer would just disappear.

I took the game to my tech center where they confirmed it was the real game, the guy put the game into his computer, (autoplay opened as a software game) but what i expected was it needed the code which was farther then i got with it. Later i search to find the seller to get the code or my money back but instead i read the reviews on the same game and nobody needed a code. Everyone got the game to work and the only bad reports were because of the game itself.

I took it back to the tech center and told them to look into it more and they refused, said theres nothing they can do without the code. Soon after i put the game into another computer (windows XP instead of Windows 7) where it worked, INSTALLED without any issue at all! It was not missing any files and did not need any code. Due to the computer though i managed to get it stuck in the driver so i brought it back, told them the update and that i got it stuck, easy fix but they told me to bring in my computer and they will see what they can do.

I updated ALL of my computer for the driver, windows, even the processer and the same thing happend. No change. Please post what you think is the problem or ask me for a way to contact me weather though instant messager or phone. Please don't post suggestions or guesses, cause more likely i can get it fixed by tomorrow or later, but if i could fix it now myself, it would be GREAT!

Thanks in advance.

Update: Heres the link to the product. http://www.amazon.com/Sim-Coaster-Pc/dp/B000056KDV/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1299716217&sr=1-1

Heres the link to the seller. http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/at-a-glance.html?ie=UTF8&seller=A1PIKOYFK6E1MT

understand why i don't think the problem is the game and how it must be with my computer.update: i use a Samsung with windows 7. Got it on Christmas day so it's still considered new. Not sure what else you may need to know so ill update if neededYour issue is with Amazon...the seller.
Deal with them direct to solve this.its not with amazon, i looked the same exact game and everyone had positive freedback. And on the older computer, the game ran smoothly with no problems. Its not amazon, its my computer. thanks for the suggestionIf you insist...
A 1st party app that you discovered was 3rd party doesn't sound Kosher to me at any rate...
To decide that it's your machine instead of the product simply befuddles me.
How do you "hear" a processor working by the way ? ?

At any rate i wish you the Best of Luck...is the real game, it came from a guy who had more then 20,00 sells overal on amazon with positive reports, to accuse the seller in that situation is an insult before i check my computer. Also, from what i was told in the past, the fan turning on louder and the disc reader moving while loading SOMETHING means the processor is running and is trying to load what ever needs to be loaded.

Solve : Graphics driver update?

Answer»

I have a Samsung R40 laptop that I bought in 2007, running Windows XP.  My graphics card is ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M Series, and the driver is VERSION 8.242.0.0.

Lately videos and GAMES have started to freeze or stutter, and I wonder if a driver update COULD help the problem. On the Samsung website, the only download offered is the same version. On driverscollection.com, I found version 9.8, but as all the advice I've read says laptop updates should come from the laptop manufacturer, I wanted to CHECK before I download from someplace else.  Should I download, or leave it alone? Is there anything else that could be causing the problem?

Thanks in advance.I'd leave it alone. If this happened all of a sudden why would you think it's the driver?Sorry, that wasn't clear.  It didn't really come on SUDDENLY, it's just gotten bad enough recently to really annoy me.  But I'm not too tech savvy, so I don't know what the causes could be - just grasping at straws, really.

Dell doesn't have the driver, SoundMAX doesn't give drivers, searched high and low on the internets. I tried a few likely workarounds (try the XP driver, try the drivers from similar models), all failed. Anybody have an idea?

Solve : Lenovo Y550 three 'unknown devices' in driver list and VERY high latencies?

Answer»

Okay, apparently my machine either wasn't set up to record BSOD logs in the minidump directory, or somewhere along the line one of the utilities erased them.  I did have a log in the C:\Windows\LiveKernelReports\WATCHDOG directory, but interestingly the last date was a couple weeks back.  Actually, looking at the time stamp on most of these this computer didn't even physically exist yet so I'm not sure what we're actually looking at here.

I've configured windows to record BSOD logs now and I'll force a few and post those dumps, but in the meantime here is the latest watchdog dump log.  I don't know if this will be useful or not.

To Address&nbsOkay, I don't know what's going on here.  I've forced about a half dozen BSOD's with ComboFix and TFC, but there are no dump records in the Minidump folder.

I've gone through the steps outlined here, and I've verified that the registry key for CrashDumpEnabled is set properly, but there are still no dump reports.

Any ideas?  I have no idea why dumps are not created, either.
Also, those dates are confusing, since nothing recent is listed.

I'd like to check something....

Sorry, my fault. It won't run on 64-bit system.

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
    • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
    • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
    • Disconnect from the INTERNET and close all running PROGRAMS.
    • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
    • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
    • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
    • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
    • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
    • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
    • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.
IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

Now the machine is slow as Christmas.  I'm typing five or six characters ahead before they show up on the screen.  I went ahead and ran the 64 bit again (this time not as administrator), and here is the log:

I think, you need to run some hardware tests.

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 (or http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=28744&hl=hard+drive+diagnostic)
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable FLOPPY, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), to make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba hard drives, see here: http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=ServicesSupport/FujitsuDrivesUSandCanada/SoftwareUtilities#diagnostic

Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps HERE

    ===================================================================================

    A. If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting/running computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

    B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
    ...run memtest...

    1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
    2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-....iso.zip file.
    3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-....iso file.
    4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
    5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
    6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
    7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:

    8. Locate memtest86+-....iso file, and click Open button.
    9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:

    10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run.

The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:

It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

The following image is the test results area:

The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, most likely, you have bad RAM.

    Broni,

I'll do these but keep in mind that both Ubuntu and XP are running just fine on this machine right now, no problems what-so-ever.  I'd think that if I had a hardware issue it would manifest in both of those installations as well, wouldn't it?True. I forgot about it.
Well, maybe it's time to reinstall Win 7 then.Yeah, I was hoping to avoid that.  Oh well, I guess we can't win 'em all.

Thanks for your help, it is appreciated. I wish, we did better Quote from: Broni on February 21, 2011, 10:46:56 AM
    I wish, we did better
Just a quick FYI for follow-up.  After reinstall (which seems to be a two or three day affair these days), this machine is back to screamin'.

I really would like to have known what caused the slowdown.

Now that everything is reinstalled and running like it should, I'll be making an Arconis image.  I should have done this long ago.  Oh well, live and learn.

Thanks again for your help. You're very welcome
    Thanks for posting back

Solve : cannot download drivers for my printer?

    Answer»

Started USING my back-up computer which is a Dell vostro 200 running windows xp. the printer is not recognised. I went to HP SITE to download the DRIVER  (HP Laserjet 1022) and it starts downloading. Then right at the end it says

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\Downloads\lj1020_1022-HB-pnp-win32-en.exe could not be saved, because an unknown error occurred.

Try saving to a different location.

I am not SURE how to save to a different location and also I am not sure that is the REAL problem.
    Any ideas?

ThanksUse another computer for the download.Right-click on the file you want to download and it will ask for a location to which you want it saved.

I have spent the 6 hours on a different computer trying to figure it out and am just so confused. I know I need to download chipset but not sure which ones and from where. Please help!
HP support site  http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/welcome-copy.html#SupportUnfortunately, the HP site is not showing any XP downloads for the HP Pavilion Slimline s3713w (other than a LightScribe update).

Don't lose faith - I am now researching your motherboard.HP Pavilion Slimline s3713w Desktop PC

Ok - the PEGATRON Acacia 1.02 carries the nVidia MCP61 chipset, which is included in the nForce 430 series.

    So, try this download: http://www.nvidia.com/content/license/location_0605.asp?url=http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/nForce/standalone/430_410/8.26_11.09_nforce_winxp_english.exe

After the installation, reboot and check your Device Manager for any remaining flags. It wont let me, it says can not unpack the exicutable is corrupt.  I saved it to a flash drive and then tryied to download it on the computer.  Cause I cant get on line on that computer I have to do it all from another one
Understood - must have been a bad download.

I know that's a valid link, because I've used it before.ok I found my motherboard

Solve : I have an issue...?

    Answer»

To start off, I am running on Windows VISTA and I am experiencing a problem with my CD-ROM drive.
When I place a disc into the driver, it does not recognize the disk, but it does make a noise as if it were reading the disc. This goes on for a couple of seconds, then it gives me a message that there is no disc. I've tried reading other disks such as program installation, DVDs, and CDs without much success.

I've tried to look for some solutions without much success.
So, I am wondering is my disc a lie? or is it my drive; and if so, can I replace it with minimal risks and trouble? Quote

I am experiencing a problem with my CD-ROM drive
The optical drive you mention will only read CDs not for any type of DVD. However if CDs inserted were not also recognized, have you tried directly clicking on the CD drive on My Computer once the disc was finish being loaded. The autoplay/prompt might just be needed to be set. Did you check your Device manager for the status of the Device and run the Troubleshoot for any additional info.? Did you check your Device manager for the status of the Device and run the Troubleshoot for any additional info.?
Device manager will be the appropriate place to go to, and check if the device is working properly, or if the drivers are installed. And PLEASE use CDs only, lol not DVDs

    Ciao, hope this helps
Not knowing your type of computer (laptop/desktop) this suggestion is based upon it being a desktop. If you exhaust the attempts at recovery of the device as it is installed in it's current computer this is what you can try. Remove the device from the computer it is in and temporarily install it in another computer. You do NOT need to install it in a bay simply connecting the cables will suffice. Do you know if it is a Sata drive or an IDE drive? If you ultimately do get to a stage where you want to replace it that is certainly something that you can do yourself. I believe it to be premature to be doing that yet. If it gets to that stage we can guide you on how to do it.You will need to tell us re the SATA/IDE  type as factors of difference come into play. If you don't know you can download and run a scan with Everest Home free edition and it will define ALL the hardware on your computer. A very handy resource for things like this. truenorthI neglected to say that my computer indicates that it is running properly.

This is the only desktop I have at my disposal, so I can not try my CD-ROM in another computer.
My hardware ID is as follows:
Driver Description   WDC WD5000AAKS-75A7B0 ATA Device
    Hardware ID   IDE\DiskWDC_WD5000AAKS-75A7B0___________________01.03B01
    One of these may help:
    1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
    or...
    2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116
    Restart computer.
    or...
    3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
    Accept REGISTRY merge.
    Restart computer.
    or...
    4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" SIGN next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
    You'll see two items:
    - ATA Channel0 (or PRIMARY Channel)
    - ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

If the above doesn't work, I'd assume your drive being a goner. One last shot, if all of the above fail:

Try booting to the drive - any bootable CD will do. This could possibly bypass any Windows and/or 3rd-party software problems.

(BTW: that 'WDC WD5000AAKS-75A7B0' Hardware ID you displayed is for a Western Digital Caviar Blue hard drive - not an optical device)

    Solve : Video Drivers problem!!!??

    Answer»

    Hello computer world!
I have yet another problem. I installed 18 Wheels of Steel Convoy and I get the PRISM 3d error. So i tried to update my graphics driver but looks like it the newest and last one they EVER came out with. The one that i downloaded is the exact one i had installed. The funny thing is a newer VERSION of 18 WOS works (american long hual) but convoy wont. Is it possible that my driver is too new. Ati redirects their page to AMD which have a driver for many diff cards that are outdated. My card is an ATI RADEON 9600/1050 Series. Its 256 MB. IM using windows xp Pro SP3. any help is greatly appreciated! My driver version is 8.593.100.0 and the date of it is 2/10/2010 so not that old. Is it possible to get an older driver for this older game? Thanks for help in advance. Greetings, comda.

OldApps.com carries a complete range of older Catalyst drivers: http://www.oldapps.com/ati.php

If this is the route you wish to take, I SUGGEST uninstalling your present ATI software, download and run Driver Sweeper (http://phyxion.net/item/driver-sweeper.html) to clean any fragments, then installing the earlier Catalyst driver that you've chosen.

I have 17 drivers out of date and i cant update em.
I have tryed DEVICE manager do update em but it can locate any updates:
Please HELP and give me ideas 1) What do you MEAN they are out of date? If you aren't having any problems leave them alone
    2) 17 drivers ?
    3) You do not update drivers via device manager. You go to the website of the hw mfg and download them from there.I downloaded all my drivers from my computer mfg page and it seems drivers are out of date.
Yeah 17 drivers i downloaded like 4 driver scanners and all showed that drivers are out of date:S
I mean theyre old and i need better onesDo not use third party apps to TELL you if you need new drivers. If everything is working DO NOT update any drivers. The only reason to update a driver is if there is a new feature that you either must have or that fixes something that was causing you a problem.

There is no such thing as an out of date driver.ye very thing is working great...OKEY thanks then i wont update em unless i have any problems.
But im missing one driver its network controller. What driver is it, i dont know what driver i need to download?

There are many different models in the Compaq Presario C500 series - if you could post the exact model number, I'm sure the proper VGA driver can be found.

If you need help, here's the HP guide to finding your product number: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/findModel?lc=en&cc=us&destPage=findModel&=.compaq presario c501TU notebook pc Quote

    windoesxp sp2
The HP support site for graphics driver available for your compaq presario c501TU is for Windows Vista(32,64). Is XP the original OS for your laptop or made a downgrade? Do you have any previous CD DRIVERS or just by HP support link?I'm finding XP drivers for the Presario C501TU on this page: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=3347837#N307.

However, it's not showing a VGA driver.

I'm new to this forum, and if there's a way to attach files to posts, I'm missing it. I'd ask you run a system info tool to discover the video hardware for your machine and attach the INFORMATION, but I don't see a way.

Question: why do you think you need a video driver? What SYMPTOMS are you experiencing?

Since I have not installed the drivers I was trying to find them. Looking on the AOC website has not helped at all. I even looked in the section phased out models and its not there. Does anyone know where I can find the drivers for this monitor? And is there anything else I can try to resolve the problem? You don't need drivers for the monitor, you need drivers for the graphics card in order to change the resolution. The drivers for my graphics card are up to DATE, unlike the monitor where for which I have NONE. Like I said changing the resolution does not seem to help the problem not sure if THATS the RIGHT area to be looking at?

Disagree with first sentence, agree with second. The only difficult PART is finding the drivers link on the manufacturers page. Those manufacturers make it a point to hide the drivers pages deep within their site STRUCTURE, I guess it's some sort of backwards attempt to market their other crap.

Anyway, turns out the item in question isn't manufactured by creative at all- it's by some company called "Syba". The download page for drivers/manual etc can be found here:

Yeah, don't use driver MANAGEMENT software to update your drivers(why do people insist that it's a good idea to pay for something that's FREE?).  Do it manually, and remember that the latest driver is not always the greatest driver.  Most drivers are updated to solve very specific problems, so unless the driver is causing issues then you don't need to update it.

Solve : My problem is that the sound/printer drivers are installed but not working?

    Answer»

Alright guys, firstly thanks for the help

Okay, my problems started when I USED Comodo firewall to block SVCHOST.EXE .  I blocked it because it kept coming up. I soon found out that file was very very important.  My solution was to uninstall Comodo firewall.  I uninstalled it but SVCHOST.EXE stayed on the blocked list. (hey, least im honest )

So me and my Mom and sister decided to pay 'the dude' (you might of met him XD ) reinstall windows and put our files back on the computer. (internet is blocked no-one knows how to unblock SVCHOST without using internet to re-DOWNLOAD Comodo and unblocking SVCHOST.EXE)   I don't have the external to store all of our files so we 'entrust' it to the dude.  I mean, he DOES know more about computers than all of us combined and we'll pay him and buy him takeaways.

He says will re-install windows in 3 hours for us.  We showed up at his house 3 hours later with Burger King, like we said we would. The dude said he needed more time as the monitor driver was playing up.  4 days later we pick up the computer from the dude.

Okay now what I don't understand is that our speakers aren't working and our printer isn't working.  The speakers are plugged into the GREEN port and their power is on (like they should be).  And the computer says 'found new hardware HP photosmart C3180" when I plug it into the USB.  Here's the thing, the printer and speakers don't work.  Device manager says HP photosmart 3100 series and also has 'audio codecs' 'legacy audio drivers' 'legacy video capture devices' 'Media Control Devices' 'Video codecs'
I'm a newbie on this forum too. Just my first post, but hope to be helpful.

Firstly, I hope you didn't pay the dude, a hefty amount for reinstalling Windows. And what version of Windows is it?

ANYWAY, I think that he forgot to install the sound drivers, or didn't install them properly. Also, since you took the computer to his house, he probably didn't know that you had an HP printer too.

You see audio codecs' 'legacy audio drivers' 'legacy video capture devices' 'Media Control Devices' 'Video codecs', but this list doesn't contain the sound driver. You can run the following command to see whether the sound driver is installed and what's the name of the sound driver:

Click Start -> Run and type the following command and press the Enter key:

    dxdiag

If you can't see the name of the sound driver in the Sound tab, or aren't able to hear the sound by using the ‘Test DirectSound’ button, or you get an error, the problem may be with the sound driver. Reinstall the sound driver.

Do you have the drivers disc that came with your computer? If yes, then you can put that disc into the drive and you'd be presented with a list of drivers you can install. Select the sound driver and click on the install button. You'd need to restart the computer after installing the sound driver.

However, if you don't have the driver disc, and if you know the manufacturer of your sound card (or your motherboard, if you have an integrated sound card), you can search the drivers on the manufacturer's website. Then download and install them.

This post about sound card problems may help you troubleshoot the problem, in case you can't get the sound even after installing the sound driver:
    http://xpdrivers.com/troubleshooting/the-sound-on-my-computer-is-not-working/

In case, you don't have the driver disc and don't know how to get the sound driver online, here's an easy solution:
    http://xpdrivers.com/xp-drivers/driver-scanning-tool/

    Hope that helps,

    Solve : USB device problems?

    Answer»

    HI.
My mouse is plugged in my computer with usb port and every time I plug another usb device (for example webcam) into my computer, my mouse freezes and stops working.
Does it do this for all devices that you plug into USB, or only the camera?

Are you also getting a warning about a power surge?Yes, it does that to all the devices I plug in.
And no, I don't get a warning. Are you using the USB ports on the front of the computer or the back?On both sides Quote from: zenc on April 03, 2010, 06:40:10 AM

    On both sides
Laptop? No, but because of that  I am planning to buy a laptop.
Hi, boot into BIOS/Setup at startup and with the usb device plugged in. If the mouse WORKS at this point, it's likely a Windows problem (because you haven't even booted into Windows yet) in which case, a reformat will likely help.

The problem hasn't even been identified as either related to the OS, performance hindering, or a simple USB Bus power overload!  Your ILLOGICAL advice to reformat is frowned upon by this junior forum member! Quote from: Sn3akyP3t3 on April 13, 2010, 12:52:34 PM

    Agree.

I think it's a spammer though, that "joyfax" part is on almost all of their POSTS. The admin RECENTLY disabled the ability to link to certain domains so their attempts have been fruitless.

    hello,

Solve : Cannot start Windows to install new drivers?

    Answer»

Alright, so I'm a little embarrassed by this, but I'm nearly at wits end.

My TROUBLES started when my onboard graphics card failed. I planned on buying a new PCI-E video card to take its place, but I was limited by my foolish purchase of a "slim" style case. None of the low-profile video cards really caught my eye, so I decided to get a whole new midsized case and eliminate the need for it. Long story short, I ended up having to buy a whole new motherboard, CPU, video card and power source along with it. So I finally get all my hardware physically set up, but now I can't get any further than the BIOS and an endless loop of "Status Repair" and resetting.

I'm pretty sure that the issue is all the new hardware with no new drivers to go with it, but I can't get to any mode (if you will) where I can boot the disks or download updates. I tried entering safe mode, disabling restart on error, changing the boot order to CD-ROM, and none of it has worked.

Here's my RECENT purchases; I bought all of these from newegg.com with a very limited knowledge of computer hardware, so no making fun if they're outdated.

    That's my only option?
Thank you then, I'll give it a try.

because your system is completely different from what windows was installed on (new motherboard) none of the chipset drivers it has will work; sometimes this can even make safe mode unbootable.

I'd go for a repair install first- you should lose any of your data if you do it properly.

I've never done a repair install with VISTA or 7 so I don't know the PARTICULARS of how to use it, but It's certainly an option when you boot to the OS disc.

Solve : Acer Aspire 5942g Powersmart Management Problem.?

    Answer»

    Hello guys....
    Great forum here, great job.
Unfortunately, my first POST is about a problem i am having.
I have this acer Aspire 5942g.
The power management button on the upper right or the program or both (?) does not seem to work.
I have of course launch manager and power management programs installed.
When i press the button, it does LIGHT up green, but i have no indication on the screen like i have when i ACTIVATE wlan or bluetooth.
When the drivers of the powersmart manager are uninstalled the button does not light up green when i press it, so it seems that the drivers partially work.
Also, nothing changes in my power settings nor the screen brightens down, no SIGN that it works.
    Actions i took so far:
I uninstalled and installed both programs, and i run them as admin.
I installed first the launch manager and then the power management and the opposite.
    Nothing changed.
I GO to c: program files:acer:acer powersmart manager and try to open the right exe file which i think is ePowerMsg but then i get an error message saying that the element ePowerMsg stopped working.
    The window is this: http://img219.images...52/16279115.png
    Is this the right exe?
I tried with ac only, ac and battery, battery only, same results.
    What can i do now?
Please some help... The picture in the previous post was not visible.
    Here it is.

Solve : Can a computer work without a CD-RW drive??

    Answer»

The Title kinda says everything. Okay, I'll explain the situation...
I have two computer at home and I took out the Cd-Rw drive of one to place it on the other one...
but when I started the Computer from which I had taken the Cd-Rw drive out it said that...
I couldn't boot the computer without the drive...

Is it NECESSARY to have a Cr-Rw drive?
Can we make a computer WORK without it?
Please, guys, help me. Thanks in advance! What is your boot order in the BIOS?, if it is CD first, try changing it to hard drive first and see if that cures your problem.Thanks... but...
If my other computer has Linux on... does... it change anything? No. The bios loads long before your system knows what your OS is. You probably need to disable the cd in the bios.It WORKED ... thanks a LOT!
    Sure thing.hello,

yes, you can use your computer without cd-rw drive.it is not necessory to install it an always connect it to system.it's only for reading CD (compac disk) , it's not a part of  Hard drive & your operating system.so work on without cd-rom drive.
