Explain the concept giving definition of ethics. |
Answer» Ethics or moral philosophy is a branch of philosophy that involves systematizing, defending, and recommending concepts of right and wrong conduct. The term ethics derives from the ancient Greek word Ethikos, which is derived from the word Ethos (habit, “custom”). The branch of philosophy axiology comprises the sub branches of ethics and aesthetics each concerned with values. “As a branch of philosophy, ethics investigates the questions, “What is the best way for people to live?” and “What actions are rights or wrong in particular circumstances?” In practice ethics seeks to resolve questions of human morality by defining concepts such as good and evil, right and wrong, virtue and vice justice and crime. As a field of intellectual inquiry, moral philosophy also is related to fields of moral psychology, descriptive ethics and value theory: Richard William Paul and Linda Elder : “A set of concepts and principles that guide us in determining what behavior helps or harms sentient creatures. Cambridge Dictionary of Philosophy : States that the word ethics is “Commonly used interchangeably with ‘morality’…… and sometimes, it is used more narrowly to mean the moral principles of a particular tradition groups or individual.” Bernard Williams : Writes attempting to explain moral philosophy “What makes an inquiry a philosophical one is reflective generality and a style of argument that claims to be rationally persuasive and Williams describes the content of this area of inquiry as addressing the very broad question, how one should live.” |

Do you agree that ‘fare forward’ is better than ‘fare well’? Give your views. |
Answer» In the timeless epic, the Mahabharata, while Krishna exalts performance of one’s duties, irrespective of its consequences, Arjuna is more concerned about the consequences. To my mind ‘fare well should be of more substance than ‘fare forward’. The concept of duty for a just cause is quite ambiguous. What is just for one, could well be unjust for another! If a just cause entails terrible consequences, the very cause should be questioned. On the other hand, if an action foresees benevolent results, its cause must certainly be good and just. So farewell’ should be better than ‘fare forward’ particularly in present day context. |

Sen quotes Eliot’s lines : ‘Not fare well/But fare forward voyagers’. Distinguish between ‘faring forward’ (Krishna’s position in the Gita) and ‘faring well’ (the position that Sen advocates]. |
Answer» Krishna in the Gita exhorts Arjuna to fare forward i.e. move towards whatever lies before you and behave accordingly. He advises Arjuna to act on the spur of the moment and that to do his duty without any thought about the result. But Sen favours the position of faring well. He says that wherever you go, you should behave well according to the situation. He gives the voyager freedom to choose his way. But in Krishna’s preaching, the voyager i.e. the listener is bound to go forward. Also, while ‘faring forward’ involves performance of duty regardless of consequences; ‘faring well’ calls for consideration of results of one’s actions, even when done in course of duty. |

Does Amartya Sen see argumentation as a positive or a negative value ? |
Answer» Amartya Sen has described argumentation as a prominent feature of India’s social life since ancient times. He describes that it has helped bringing out issues of great moral and practical value. It being closely related with democracy, has helped democracy succeed in India. Thus, Sen sees argumentation as a positive value. |

Sen draws a parallel between the moral dilemma in the Krishna-Arjuna dialogue and J.R. Oppenheimer’s response to the nuclear explosion in 1945. What is the basis for this ? |
Answer» J.R. Oppenheimer was the leader of the American team that developed the weapon that caused the nuclear explosion during the Second World War in 1945. He was greatly moved to see such a dreadful mass destruction. At this stage, he was in Arjuna’s position who was at a loss to think that he was the cause behind a great carnage. But then he could even justify his action of developing a weapon of mass destruction for the cause that he thought to be right. This was Krishna’s stand. Thus, his moral dilemma was parallel to Krishna Arjuna dialogue. J.R. |
