You are one of the crew. After the Mariner kills the Albatross, you have to suffer and there is no hope of survival.Write a diary entry of your feelings of regret and remorse at this point of time.

Answer»

Monday 29 September 20XX,

10 pm

Dear Diary,

I am very scared today. When I look at the situation which we all are in i.e., hot and humid weather and the rotten things all around, I feel disappointed. There is no water to drink though we all are parched. There is no hope of survival. I regret having approved the act of killing the Albatross by the Ancient Mariner. Of course, he had brought us good luck as the south wind started blowing, the fog lifted and the icebergs split with the arrival of the Albatross. The Ancient Mariner should not have killed it. Now we are all stuck in the silent sea. It seems as if it is a punishment for the crime committed by the Ancient Mariner. Our future is doubtful as I think we won’t be able to escape from the silent sea. Everyone on the ship is sad and desperate. We all are undergoing suffering from which we do not find any respite. Hope everything gets on a smooth track though I have doubts about it.

Good Night Diary.

“You may kill even a cow in self-defence”. What did this old saying mean to the Tiger King? “आप आत्म-रक्षा में एक गाय को भी मार सकते हो”। इस पुरानी कहावत का व्याघ्र राजा के लिए क्या तात्पर्य था?

Answer»

The cow is a sacred animal and it must not be killed except in self-defence. For the Tiger King it meant that if a cow can be killed in self-defence, there is no harm in killing a tiger in self-defence.

Why does Borges feel remorseful after his mother’s death regarding his relationship with her? Can this experience be generalized?ORHow does Borges describe his mother and his feelings for her in his interview?

Answer»

During the course of his interview with Alifano, Borges tells him that his mother was an extraordinary person who showed him a great deal of kindness in his life. Then he confesses in a remorseful tone that he could not make his mother happy because he himself was not a happy man. He also confesses that he should have shown a better understanding of his mother.

This experience can be generalized because what Borges says is true of all children. It is not surprising to know, when their mothers die, most children express that they had taken their mother for granted while they were alive like they do with the moon or the sun or the seasons and are guilty that they had abused their mothers.

How does Borges elaborate on Goethe’s words, ‘ail that is near becomes far’?

Answer»

While giving his observations about ‘blindness’, Borges recalls an idea he had expressed in one of his poems. He had said that humiliation, misfortune and discord were given to us so that we may transmute them, and make from the miserable circumstance of our life ‘eternal works’. At this juncture, Borges recalls to mind a statement made by Goethe. It says, “All that is near becomes far”. In this statement, Goethe refers not only to the sunset but also to life. Borges says that in his case, the visible world has moved away from his eyes forever. He feels that it is his duty to accept his misfortune and as far as possible enjoy those things.
