Solve : Internal to External?

Answer»

I was wondering if a INTERNAL CD drive could be "rigged" to be used outside the computer, without buying an external CD drive? Could a USB port be "rigged" to hook into the IDE port?I imagine you could use a HDD conversion kit on a CD drive.  Take a look at some of the kits available.External cases for ATAPI DEVICES are available, they have a USB2 to ATAPI ADAPTER and mounting for a 140mm (5.25in) form FACTOR device and a power supply connection. Some also include audio jacks. Thanks for the info guys!!

Solve : pls help (video card related)?

Answer»

right now im using a on baord video CARD, and i want to upgrade my video card so, what do i do?

pls help   You can upgrade either by INSTALLING the latest drivers (They are bound to be more efficient.)

However, this will SHOW very little results.

If you want to INSTALL a new videocard, disable the onboard videocard in your BIOS.Don't forget to BUY a new card and put it in the computer

Solve : PCI slots don't align with case?

Answer»

I installed the motherboard to the case and discovered that the PCI slots don't line up with the HOLES (shims?) on the case.  There is no room for the motherboard to move and nothing ELSE is adjustable.  What's wrong? You are most LIKELY trying to INSTALL an AT mainboard in an ATX case.

Or the other way around.

Solve : Computer Is Totally Dead?

Answer»

I just recently built a computer, ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe motherboard, with a p4 processor and a 400 watt power supply.  I had everything hooked up and the computer was running great for several days.  Last night I had just configured my sound card, and was hooking up my speakers, and because I needed more sockets for the speakers, I decided to move all the plugs to one power strip.  I plugged everything into the strip, and everything worked FINE (monitor, speakers, ETC.) but not the computer.  I tried to turn it on and nothing happened.  So I flipped the switch in the back a few TIMES, nothing.  The light on the motherboard doesn't even turn on.  I've checked the connections to the motherboard and also tried using a new power cord, neither has worked.  I don't know if something is wrong with the motherboard or the power supply.  There was also a bit of a thunderstorm last night, but there wasnt a power outage that I was aware of.  I have heard that power outages can mess up the power though.  Please help!thunderstorms have been the down fall on many a mobo .some people have surge protecters on their system to prevent this sorry to be the bearer of bad news i hope i am wrong ....does the capasitors lean on the board any signs or scorching or tracking ..shine a touch under the board you will have take it out of the case to this...try rebuilding it again take out the cpu ram and cards...without specialize equipment it hard to check the mobo..borrow a board from some to eliminate the mobo..do you think there could be a slight possibilty that its the power supply that got messed up, not the motherboard?  I just WANT to know for sure which it is.

Solve : Floopy Drive Not in the System?

Answer»
My drive A not seen in the system. But has checked in device manager and it's OK. Just not seen in my computer/windows explorer. for in info my PC's os is win XP sp1. TQ  Is it DETECTED in the BIOS?
I'm not sure how to check in bios. but SETTING up in bios is first booting. But I found at Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 812489 about my problem, and i don't do any things as its suggested. So may someone can verify that article.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;812489If these are exactly your symptons, you should solve the problem by using Microsoft's knowledge base.

If the symptoms donot match yours, you can still look into doing it the way Microsoft describes. But you will be less likely to succeed.

Solve : ok so i got a bigger problem then the floppy?

Answer»

my computer straight up died on me...i leave to go mow the grass, put the case door back on it, come back and it won't turn on! *censored* dells, *censored* them to *censored*!More information is required before you start CURSING at anyone or anything. Perhaps it is all your fault.

What actions have you taken before you left the computer? Settings changed? Hardware overclocked? What Operating System are you using? What did you do when you took the case plating off? Is your refigerator running?and did you cut the grass with them nice lines in it ....and  more info on dell *censored*....yeah ok well it's workin now, for some reason the power button and the restart button got switched. And now the restart button doesn't work... but that's alright i can deal with that. I have bigger problems now, this thing is being a pain. So I finally got xp loaded after i formatted the drive to use the NFTS system. Soon as i turn it off and try to turn it back on, I get this ERROR "Disk Read Error Occurred press ctrl alt del to restart." So i checked the microsoft support page and they told me that something was wrong with my csmo's. My drive used to be on the FAT28 or FAT16, pretty sure the FAT28 system. Anyways when i try to load xp again, it doesn't have an option for FAT28 system just the NFTS. It works fine as long as i don't turn it off, but reloading xp everytime i want to use the computer isn't my idea of fun.

anyways my system specs are

Dell Dimension XPS T600r
600mhz
256mb pc100 ram
80gb western digital hard drive (WD800)

that's about all you should need to knowI think you mean FAT32. I donot believe there is a FAT28?

Look for your Power/Reset buttons in the BIOS, you should be able to control from there what button does what.yeah, FAT32 was it, but how do i get it back to FAT32 if i only get the option of NFTS? I have to load xp everytime i  restart my computer and that's not fun. Is there anyway i can put the drive back into FAT32?

the buttons don't really bother mere-boot pc hit the f8 key and  type scandisk in the run box..also have you had the case of and switched the wiring...re-start button --- power button just wondered..I donot believe Windows XP supports FAT32.

I can not tell you how to do it by only using Windows XP.

When I format I first have to install Windows 98, choose FAT 32 (For disks under 64 gigabyte if I am correct) for a small partition used to run Windows.

I then upgrade to Windows XP and choose NTFS when enabling the remaining disk space as an additional partition.

I donot know if this helps, I am forced to do this due to my XP Home upgrade.I used to have windows98 installed on it then i installed xp but my drive was split into 2 different partitions. So i installed one system on each partition. Then i ended up getting system conflict errors and my computer would run really slow when i used programs like INTERNET explorer, or accessed the network files. The thing just had problems on anything that both of the systems would use and it would lag like crazy. So i got a 6 disk floppy boot for windows xp and i can install it directly, i can't really try installing 98 then installing over it now, cause i can't find my boot disk.......why dont you DOWNLOAD a win98 boot disk for a start  , then given you have your win XP cd and product code. use the win boot disk to start and then use the FDISK function and remove the existing partition .....format the complete drive and reinstall win xp on a nice clean drive.......then get all the Windows updates and your off and running

Good luck.

dl65  well it's workin right now, for some reason before it was set to turn off the hard drive after 15 minutes and my pooter didn't like that, it seems to be restarting fine, for the time being. Before it just died on me so i unno if it's alright, if i have anymore problems i'll post again later.http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q306559   ----------http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_9x.htm  but it might have help us to solve your problem by posting it in the first PLACE

I did that and now every time I HIT R for repair  or enter for set up I get a message that WINDOWS cannot find my hard DRIVE?  Download diagnostic software from the Hard Disk Drive manufacturer.Have you moved  or knocked the pc......check the ide cables?

Solve : Monitor colours?

Answer»

Is there a tool or PROGRAM on which I can fine tune my colour schemes for my monitor?

It is a Fujitsu COMPUTERS Siemens Scaleo C772. If that makes a difference.not 100% sure if this will do>http://www.snapfiles.com/get/easyhues.htmlI'll give it a shot. Much obliged.

That is not quite what I look for.. I was thinking more of something in the direction of a... Universal standard for colours.. Like a program that shows me what to set my RB, GB, BB, RG, GG and BG colours to in order to get that effect.

If that even exists, I doubt that every monitor would use the same system

Solve : HARd drive Issues!! Broken LinkS??

Answer»

I recently bought a computer
AMD Athlon 64-bit 3200+
Asus K8v se Deluxe
Hitachi 160GB 7200RPM
Ati radeon 9800 pro 256mb videocard
and 1.28 or so GB RAM...

My computer was working fine for about 3 weeks and then on day when i installed mcafee virus scan it found 2 viruses and it quarintined them.. after that my computer doesnt let me run anything.. when i CLICK on an icon or a program of even my computer is says could not be found please search and find this file...... the only thing that works is the browser (i typed in a url into the run box)... could this be because of the viruses that were deleteD? or is a setting set wrong all i know is i need an answer.. this is killing meWhat operating system is installed?

If it is XP I suggest you boot with the XP disk inserted and use the "repair option"

Make sure your antivirus is updated and scan again.  Download the many free scanners for spy/adware as well and run those if you can.

Will your apps WORK in safe mode?i hav XP.....
here is what happened.. one of the quartined files werent actually infected with a virus. mcafee just deleted it.... i restored it and it worked....
and today when i was searching spyware i deleted a few things and when i rebooted  and i clicked on an app it says
"This file does not hav a file associated with it running" or something like that...(im so angry .. it worked but now its broken..)

p.s. my spyware remover has a restore point thingy but i cant access it because it wont let me run anything but my browser (i explained earlier how i got in)
 thnx

and another thing.. i recently found out it might be a virus in the files SVCHOST.EXE and SMSSNY.EXE in C:\windows (these files are what start programs and folders etc. .... is there anywhere i can re-download these files to clean the virus?http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ - Trend Micro- Free online virus scan

You may be able to run this from your browser.

I suggest you use the repair function whilst booting from the XP CD once you have scanned for viruses.I tried mcafee and housetrend scanner
in mcafee SMSSNY.EXE and SVCHOST.EXE were infected with w32/[email protected]
with housetrend it also showed these files infected... these are critical system files and i cant clean them (they are uncleanable) and i cant delete them because they are NEEDED files lol what do i do now?

p.s. i am NOT going to reinstall windows xpJust as I was about to force you to reinstall XP...

I never mentioned ANYWHERE that you should reinstall Xp. Repairing and reinstalling are two different things. They may not be different to you, but they certainly are different to me.

I suggest you boot into safemode and use a (Professional) virus scanner from there with the latest updates.

I donot know what kind of Mcafee scanner you are using, I am not aware of free Mcafee editions, but if you are using a free edition I suggest you replace it.ok number 1) i know u didnt say to reinstall windows... i am just saying with my new problems that no matter what it MIGHT lead to i dont want to reinstall windows
2) i had mcafee viruscan v8.0 and it found the virus.. but then some reason it went berserk so i uninstalled it from my pc...
3) the mcafee free scanner i found at their website
4) safe mode has the same effects as it does in regular mode.. so safemode does not help me at all in this case...

sad 2 say this might be a huge problem and one more thing... if you cant solve the problem at least help me access one program (SpyBot Search and Destroy) all i need to do is hit undo and recover .. and then i can finish the rest myself... so mainly all i  really need is access to that program (even though a solution to the whole problem would be nice)ok... im going 2 explain EVERYTHING from the beggning lol... because i keep talking about stuff u might not know about.. so here it goes

1)Installed virusscan v8 Mcafee
2) detected torvil virus in svchost.exe and in smssny.exe in C:\Windows
3)deleted both of the files
4) i could not run any applications.... ( as i explained in first post on this topic)
5)i returned the 2 infected files back into WINDOWS.... and everything worked fine..
6) ran spybot search and destroy... found spyware and deleted it... and Set a restore point...
7) couldnt run applications again.. like in beginning

now all i need is to run spybot and i can restore what i deleted... after that i removing the worms is another problem that i can solve my self..

many thanksBoot from your Windows XP CD and run the repair option.
i just found out another thing to my problem lol...
i cant run exe's .... i can only run the files that exe's  make and read.. such as a .zip file i can open with winzip.. thats how i could start winzip.....that is how i started ie ,.. i typed in a url and it ran the url.. which launched ie.. hope this helps....
and i can launch all my programs from safe mode with command prompt

many thanks...
repair on xp cd didnt workYou could try to over-write Windows XP but I heavily doubt that will do you any good. You will not have to format, but I donot think your system will be as stable as it was before it was infected.

I doubt it was very stable back then, but you can try.

I donot know what you should do, either that or format. E-mail Microsoft technical support or phone them. Quote

p.s. i am NOT going to reinstall windows xp

HAH!  Another poor soul who thinks Microsoft would actually consider giving them a choice.

Solve : Case and motherboard question?

Answer»

I have a micro atx motherboard and i'm looking into buying a new CASE. If the case specs say it can take a size atx motherboard will my micro atx fit?On the BACK of the case, you will SEE a number of 'slot covers' or 'backplane covers'. Most MicroATX cases have 4 covers (some cheat and only have 3), and a true ATX box has 7, or occasionally 8 or 6, available slots on the back.

So long as you have the right port-cluster cover for your MicroATX MB, it will fit a full ATX case. You just move the standoffs in the case bottom AROUND to fit. The three bottom-most slot covers are usable only to mount things like the second RS232 port, the joyport if it isn't on the port cluster, a USB or Firewire breakout module, or a sound card additional-port module, none of which actually plug into a PCI or AGP slot.

Solve : Popping and Echo coming from speakers?

Answer»

Hi there, I've got quite a CONFUSING problem related to my computers audio. I'm running Windows 2000 and am using integrated sound from my motherboard, though I do have a good speaker system. It's a Creative Inspire 5.1 Digital Sound System. Whenever I download music or play video games the playback is PERFECT, but whenever I insert an audio CD to be played I get a distant popping and echo sound that continues. I've updated my integrated sounds drivers. (Realtek '97 audio I believe), but the problem is not being resolved. A friend said that it could be that the audio cable from my cd rom isn't connected properly to the motherboard. I checked and it is. It's a strange problem due to the fact that this sound only occurs when I play a CD. I've even tried equalizing the sound on windows media, nothing works.

Thank you kindly.

-CalvinIt might be that you need to use a real sound card and deactivate the embedded audio device. I'd recommennd a Turtle Beach Montego or SoundBlaster Live or Audigy model.

Test: Plug a headset or amped speaker into the jack on the front of the CD drive, and if the NOISES are still there when you play a CD, you have a bad audio circuit on that CD drive. Replace the drive, or retire it from audio service (it may still read - or write - program CDS fine). It's strange cause I have a DVD-ROM drive and a CD burner drive and BOTH make the same noise. So I find it hard to believe that both the wires are screwed. It's just strange that it only HAPPENS when inserting a CD, not playing downloaded mp3's

thx
a mic could cause this fed back that if you have one attached to your pc? and this happen only on one cd if so it maybe a bad recording?nah, no MIKE is plugged in. And it's on all my cd's!Did you replace both CD rom cables?

I suggest you install a soundcard that matches with your speakersets performance.

Solve : sparks fly when plugging in usb cable?

Answer»

WHen I try to plug my printer into the usb port of computer, or vice versa, I get sparks and a surge. What could cause this? Too many pluged in items?I donot know what could cause this, perhaps you are not mounting the cable correctly or perhaps the cable is damaged, however, I suggest you quit using your USB port(s) until you have more information concerning this.. Phenonema.this does happen after all you are pluging in a usb into a LIVE port i would not be to concerned  about this ..no doubt this happens when your printer is live too?sparks fly when connecting a HT plug lead to  a spark plug...does the  printer work ok? Quote

no doubt this happens when your printer is live too?

You are not supposed to mount any cables other than USB when the computer power is on. Unless the printer is an exception? If you're getting sparks when plugging in a USB cable, you've got something seriously wrong. That is supposed to take only a 5 VOLT feed and two signal leads. Inspect the USB cable and port for damage, and repair as necessary before it fries your system.

If you are using a different WALL socket for the USB peripheral than the PC, have someone inspect the wall sockets for incorrect or defective wiring. You could be getting a bad GROUND loop. Also check your PC and peripherals for ground/case shorts.

Solve : uninstallation pop-up wont go away?

Now, after TRYING to uninstall a program there is a pop-up icon that appears EVERY time I boot my computer..and it will not go away. Solve : Sound Advice Please?

Hello

I am having a sound problem. I am only recieving one channel (right) but over BOTH speakers. I have checked all wires and connections, replaced a NEW soundcard, removed new soundcard, placed old sound card into new slot..etc without any SUCCESS, removed all old drivers ( i think)etc...

This sounds like a conflict somewhere...any guru's able to help shed some light??

This happens with mp3, cd's...whatever

athelon 600
128 mb ram
sblive value
two speakers - one sub only

Rockalcock

Thanks in advanceYou will be running the AudioHQ utility in test mode. Install it if not already on the machine.

Test 1:
Disconnect all AUX, LINE, CDRom, and other devices connected to the sound card. Connect a STEREO headset to the SPKR 1 jack on the sound card. Open AudioHQ and go to the settings and set the system for either Headset or Single Speaker Pair. Test to insure you get separate sound for each side of the headset. If you get single-channel response, try another headset; if that also only runs single channel replace the sound card.

Test 2:
If the headset test gave you stereo sound, replace the headset with your stereo speakers. If the speakers give you R-only mono, replace the patch cord between the speakers and the PC and make sure it is a stereo patch cord. If the speakers still play only right channel, get the speaker input jack fixed/replaced.

Test 3:
If your sound card seems to perform right with the speakers and headset but without the other accessories plugged in, start testing with one accessory at a time until it plays right channel only again. Repair or replace the DEFECTIVE accessory or accesory cable.

Post test:
Use AudioHQ to re-establish your sound card setup for your multiple speaker setup. If a channel goes lame, download and install the drivers for Sound Blaster Live from www.gateway.com, NOT the Creative Labs/SoundBlaster site drivers. TYhen go through the list using Update Drivers in manual mode to find a driver that works right for your card.check the BALANCE slider< master volume control> is not shifted to one direction  left? right?take a look a the playback progam if it applies some do some dont winamp i think has this ?

Solve : massive crash!?

Answer»

I am stumped. I have not found any documentation that explains my symptoms.  I built this box about 2 months ago and now I have 2 problems I think are related.

Box specs:
425 watt ATX power supply
BioStar M7NCD  Motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 3200+ (Barton core, 400 FSb)  CPU
All copper CPU heat sink - Ultra brand
512MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz RAM -  Ultra brand (with added heat SINKS)
Hitachi 90GB EIDE HD
XFX GeForce FX 5200  256MB DDR 8X AGP  video card
Win XP Pro OS

Problem 1 I can live with if I have to. In the BIOS I have 4 possible settings for the bus speed  100 / 133 / 166 / 200. If I set the bus speed to 200, WINDOWS fails to boot. The BSOD display says the failure was due to a memory error. If I back it down to 166 bus speed it seems to work. (at least for a time)

Problem 2 is the killer. The box crashes big time. When it crashes there is no warning in advance. It just whacks out... No Display... No way to re-boot... 3 finger salute is no effect... Power on button does nothing... The only thing the box does is keep sounding a 2 tone alarm from the internal speaker.  (beeeeeeeebooooooobeeeeeeeebooooooobeeee eeeebooooooo) The sound kinda reminds me of a police car in England. (I DIGRESS)  The system logs show nothing. It crashes so fast there is no time for it to enter anything in the logs.

The only way to recover is to unplug the sucker for about 15 seconds then reboot. CPU and Case temps are fine when this happens. I am wondering if the RAM is going fubar. Any suggestions short of a 10lb sledge hammer are welcomed.
I suggest you donot attempt to overclock your System Bus to 200MHz again. This may damage your CPU permanently.

Are you positive you are getting stable temperature readings? And what do you define as 'fine case and CPU temperatures'?

Quote

Overclock? The Motherboard, CPU, and RAM were all designed to run together at 400. That translates to a setting of 200 in the BIOS. There is no jumper block for CLOCK settings on this board.
http://www.biostar.com.tw/products/mainboard/board.php3?name=M7NCD is the link to the board specs. http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_3734,00.html is the link to the CPU specs.

BTW, minor point, on the AMD web site, the recomended motherboard for this CPU is the one I am using . . . Which brings me back to wondering how running at the rated speed is overclocking.

Well, not rock stable. Is a CPU temp. of 32C to 35C close enough to stable?

One tech I talked to said that a borderline power supply could cause the crash symptoms I described above. I replaced the PS with an Antec model True430 supply today. . . still crashes.Windows XP refuses to boot when I set my System bus to 200MHz, however, I have an XP Athlon.

What kind of power supply did AMD Tech-support recommend? The one you installed? I suggest you mail them again to see what kind of power supply they would install.

Solve : floppy drive won't read any disks?

Answer»

ok well i have a gateway 300x but it doesn't come with a floppy drive. I took one off an old computer and i know it works cause it did on the other computer. I don't have the ide CABLE in wrong EITHER because I just fixed that. I already setup in the bios that my computer should recognize a floppy drive. The icon shows up in my computer but when i CLICK on it, it just says insert DISK even if i already have one in there or just put one in. What am I doing wrong?check the device manager?and what happens if you USE disk clean up does it work?

Solve : CD-ROM drive won't eject?

Answer»

It seems that a day can't pass without some kind of problem, and today was no exception. My CD-ROM drive is a Plextor PX-12CSi and it won't spit the caddy out. The orange light just blinks 9 times, pauses and blinks again. The SCSI BIOS recognizes it and so does Windows, but the CD won't eject. It appears that there is no CD in it either. It worked fine last night.
-JohnSee that tiny little hole in the front of the tray? That is the EMERGENCY eject. Gently insert the end of a paper clip into hole to trip the eject mechanism.I'll try that. I was thinking of trying that ANYWAY, but I figured I'd see what you guys said. What exactly is going on? I haven't put any new CDs in since last night. I started it up this morning and it started doing that. Quote

Try what Dummy suggested, if that makes the CD-ROM drive WORK again perhaps the CD was simply stuck. If it afterwards refuses to work, it COULD have simply given up the ghost.Does the cdrom drive eject cdroms.......if you go to the cdrom drive......and right -click on the icon......and then scroll down the list......and click eject.........what operating system are you using?Windows couldn't eject it because it didn't know it was there. I ended up having to disconnect the SCSI cable, turn the computer on, turn it off, reconnect the SCSI cabe, and turn it back on again. It worked after that. But now it seems like every time I open up the case I have to do that again.

P.S. I haven't had any problems yet today because I haven't used that computer yet.I use Windows 98 SE.Loading  the proper drivers helps. It doesn't use drivers. Once the SCSI adapter is recognized the CD-ROM drive just uses the basic Windows 98 CD-ROM drive drivers. Plextor's WEBSITE said so.

Did you perhaps uninstall the drivers?

Also, what resolution are you running at? CERTAIN resolutions might be impossible for your card or monitor to be displayed and will cause it to crash.i have this same exact problem.  i have tried nearly EVERYTHING to fix it.  the thing that stumps me most is the fact that the card has this problem is both of my computers.  COULD it be a faulty card?  and if it is faulty then how come it can work at low resolutions?also i forgot to mention, the card however is different.  i own a Geforce 4 Ti4200.  These two cards did come out around the same time though.

i think i might attempt to mess with the card some more on my other computer with more extensive bios options that are not available on the one i tried before.  or possibly try more nvidia drivers.Malcolm.....The motherboard you list appears to have on board video........If you wish to install a plug in vid card you must disable the on board vid or things won't work.....

dl65  You think your mainboard turns off the Onboard video it's self?

Turn it off yourself if you haven't tried yet.

In my Bios (Phoenix) it's under the 'Integrated peripherals' menu.
this is the only options that i have in bois that say anything to do with video

                       PCI/ Plug&Play setup

Title                                                   Options

Plug & Play Aware O/S                    Yes/No
Share Mem Size                               N/A
O/S Control                                     Normal/Japanese O/S
Primary Graphics Adapter                Onboard AGP/PCI
Allocate IRQ To PCI VGA                   Yes/No
PCI IDE Bus Master                          Disabled/Enabled

Which  should i have these set at?Malcolm....Try this .....go "Start"/ "Control Panel"/"System"/ "Hardware"/ "Device Manager"  then select Display adapters.....you should see 2 listed .....the on board one and the new one .....hilight the onboard one and right click and choose disable .....now it should have a red X on it  ......Now shut down restart and things should work fine .

let us know

dl65  the only thing there is Geforce mx4000 I got it working!!

i uninstalled both my chipset driver & agp card's driver then resarted and installed my chipset driver and then the cards driver then restarted and it started to work and thats all i had to do after spending a week looking for the anwser.

thanks for your help every1Very informative!!!
I'm new at this, but I too had the message from Display that says the adapter type is incorrect, or the current settings do not work with your hardware.
I am trying to get my nvidia Riva TNT2 Model64/Model64PRO File Version 4.14.10.4523 to work.
I understand the adapter you're taliking about is different from mine, but could the direction you give to fix the problem work for the adapter I have?
Thanks in advance !!Let me rephrase that. I was wondering how to uninstall the chipser drivers, and the agp drivers, as Malcolm said in the post before my LAST one. And also to reinstall after uninstalling. If I know how to do that, I think I too may have solved this thing!! Thanks for any help from any of you!!

Solve : Do you think I need new CD Rom drive?

CD Rom drive was working yesterday; ALTHOUGH it did seem to be noisy.  Today, when I click to run D:, it says drive is not ready.  When I put in a disk, the light comes on in the drive for quiet a while like it wants to start, but then the light GOES back down to c: drive.  None of my disks are being recognized, not even the cleaning disk.

I am running 98 on an emachine with 32 mb.  A: drive is working as usual.

Before this trouble, I made changes to the desktop and display properties.  Put the underwater theme on with the fish screen saver.
Did you install your CD-ROM drive on another computer yet to check wheter it is operative or not?
go to my computer icon right click on it  properties tab .. click that then click the DEVICE manager you will the see the cdrom icon click the plus sign then the icon  then properties ....settings tab click that ..and see if the auto insert notification box is ticked also the dma box is ticked also....a short to this is msdos prompt scanreg/restore..if you wish to use this option come back for more INFO on how..toRaptor..  I pulled a cd rom out of another old computer, plugged it in and it worked like a charm.  Thanks for the hint.

At first, it was pretty scary pulling all those wires loose, but I was sure shouting after I plugged everything back in and it worked.  I'm learning a lot from this forum.

Solve : IEEE 1394?

Answer»

how can I install IEEE 1394.in my computer devic manager beside IEEE1394 is a guestion mark.I want to
KNOW what is this and how can I install it again?remove it and install the drivers and then PLUG your dazzle etc in  and re-boot IEEE 1394
And Merlin, I wouldn't expect firewire to dissapear any TIME soon.  USB2 is a fair competitor to Firewire400 (the initial IEEE1394 standard) but Firewire800 is, well, twice as fast.  I'd expect it to continue to be used on professional level devices, but would expect the dominance of USB to continue on lower level devices where speed is not so important, but price is (firewire is more expensive to implement as well as being less popular).  You'll also note that more and more computers are coming with Firewire standard (for example, Gigabyte now make many motherboards with firewire built in), particularly TOWARDS the enthusiast end of the market.

Solve : I need help starting my pc, Please Read?

Answer»

I built a pc from scratch and I'm having problems with it starting.  When I press the power button, the LED's light, fans turn, monitor wakes up.  After a couple of secs everything cuts off.  I have a Biostar M7Vit Pro motherboard, Award legal Bios, AMD Athlon XP3000+ CPU, Kingston DDR400 memory, Chieftec Dragon DX series case, Maxtor SATA. HD and Adaptec SATA cable.

Please, someone get back to me with a possible solution.  I've reinstalled all connectors and searched help forums ENDLESS days for a solution, but no luck yet.  I have Maxblast 3 disk and drivers for VIA/AMD chipset motherboards, however, the pc won't stay on long enough to start the boot process.

ThanksIs the power SUPPLY adequate to MEET the required amount of power?it sounds like your computer is failing a power up test, as some1 already said check you have an adequate power supply for your system and if you can, swap it for another.

If you are getting any beeps (or other signals ) from the mobo check the manual to SEE what they are indicating.

also it cant hurt to check the jumpers are all set correctly i have found jumpers can be incorrect on mobos straight out of the box.

One last thing if you have bought your stuff new there is always the chance a component is faulty and causing your problems

have you use the floppy disk  with came with the mobo?Well, congrats on having the guts to build you own!  You'll learn from the experience if nothing else (and probably take greater PLEASURE out of it once its all working).

I'm assuming when you say 'the monitor wakes up' you actually see no picture (it just powers on - it being connected via a pass through plug in your power supply (again, a guess), which only lets power through when the computer is powered up).

The first thing I would do is strip down to essentials.  Leave the following installed:

Motherboard
RAM
CPU, with heatsink/fan combo installed and plugged into the motherboard
graphics card (if you're not using onboard graphics).

Ensure that the motherboard has BOTH power connectors attached - all modern motherboards (couldn't find yours specifically on the web) require both the standard ATX connector (long plug, two rows of pins (about 20 i think) and the ATX12V connector (four pins - 2x2) connected to run.  The computer will not boot without it.

Ensure the CPU is correctly inserted into the socket (hard to go wrong - if it drops into place and the lever was pulled down fully, you're in business).  Ensure the heatsink/fan is installed on top of the CPU and plugged into the motherboard.

Ensure the graphics card (if you're not using onboard video) is installed.

Ensure the RAM is installed and both clips on the sides of the RAM are fully clipped in.

Plug your monitor directly into a power socket - you can use an old power cord, or any standard IUC lead (kettles often use these) to plug into the pass-thru style plug if its hardwired into the back of the monitor.  This will slightly reduce the load on your power supply (this can be a temporary measure).

With the motherboard, CPU, RAM and graphics card installed, and all the power connectors correctly installed, it should boot.

If it doesn't one of those components is faulty.  Try different RAM, graphics, power supply if you have them (the easiest bits).  Then you're down to motherboard and CPU to find your problem - much harder to fool around with.

Let us know what happens (and give more specifics if possible - you can never post too much detail).

Solve : new hardware new problems?

Answer»

i just upgraded my AMD K6-2 350mhz to a 500mhz and now my computer wont get PAST the windows loading screen. The bios only detects it as a 400mhz processor and when my computer finally does get past the boot screen I go into dxdiag and it says its a 450mhz processor?
The processor was pulled out of a working computer so it must be still good.
When I installed it I was playing around with the jumpers that it says in my manual to try to get it to SAY 500mhz on the bios screen but I had no luck no matter what combination I tried.
Is this problem caused by overclocking or underclocking?Try re-seating your video card or testing with a different one.Perhaps the processor is not compatible with your current mainboard.

Or your system BUS needs to be higher, HOWEVER, I believe that is called 'overclocking'.

My maximum System Bus is 200, when I reset my BIOS it dropped to 133 and my processor would only function as a 1250Mhz, so I set it to 166 and it went back to 2100Mhz.

I am not very knowledge able concerning these things.is this why The AMD K6-2+ processors are Mobile Processors designed to use in the laptops. Our products are not designed to support any Mobile Processors; therefore, does not support AMD K6-2+ CPUsOur?I think my computer needs warming up in the mornings,
After I woke up this morning I turned the computer on and it froze on the bios screen then I reset and it froze on the win98 screen then I reset again and it booted up fully. Now I can reset it as many times as I wish and it wont freeze, but it really only freezes when I first turn it on in the morning.
The 350mhz I had in it worked perfectly but I had to upgrade to the 500mhz so I could play this NEW game I downloaded.
I reset the cmos to see if it fixed it but that didnt do anything, then I rest bios defaults but nothing.
Any suggestions?I suggest you READ Merlin his post.where did you get this cpu from...and the last post was  a snip from amd.....

Solve : My computer refuses to boot up all the way. Help!?

Answer»

Lately, my computer has been in the habit of not turning the monitor on when I turn on the tower. So then, I have to push and hold the on button until the *censored* thing turns off again... A few minutes later I do the same thing... over and over... Until it finally turns the monitor on... ONLY TO FREEZE ON START UP. Argh! It doesn't even get past the boot up screens into the desktop before it freezes...

It just started doing this one day outta the blue.

I've run virus scanners, spy/ad ware scanners, Norton Windoctor... It still insists that nothing is infected, broken, or missing.

I swear to god I'm going to smash this thing to little pieces.

Because... Once it finishes throwing it's little "I don't want to boot up" tantrums, and it's on... It's fine. Completely FINE.

The only clue as to what might be going on is that it incessantly turns on number lock as soon as it starts to boot up.  The floppy drive light does come on before it freezes up too.

It used to take only a few tries to get it to turn on, but today I've been trying since 10:30 AM and it's now 2:30 PM... and I've ad no luck in turning it on.
If this machine is over half a year old and has never been cleaned out, try that. Use a 25mm long bristle paintbrush, and remove the fans from your heatsinks for access to clean both the heatsinks and fan blades. Clean the entire mainboard and cards, including all chip heatsinks. Clean the case fans and their intakes and filters. Remove DUST from inside the case. A small hand vacuum or a 20 to 30mm hose attached to a regular one is useful in collecting the dirt and dust, and a source of compressed air/gas can help loosen dirt, but be careful of static charge with that.

Finally unplug and disassemble the power supply. Clean the board and fan well.

Inspect the fans to verify that they all WORK. Check them for stiffness or sticking, excessive noise, and physical damage. Running each one with a 12v power source can serve as a check to trace down the source of a fan noise in a system. Include the power supply fan in this check. Stiff or noisy sleeve-bearing fans can sometimes be recovered with some 3-in-1 oil or similar lubricant, but often the best repair is to replace the bad fan with a new one.

Finally reassemble the components and system. It should work better.

The symptom sounds like the BIOS is hanging. Insure that your BIOS setting for 'Floppy seek' is off. You may wish to reload BIOS with 'failsafe' values and reboot, then re-enter BIOS and change the NumLock, floppy seek, and other settings. Also try running with the floppy disconnected and the controller off; if this results in normal startups, replace the defective floppy.Heather .....How old is your pc.....? When is the last time you did a defrag ? What operating system are you running ? If you are certain the problem isnt as the result of some bug ......then its possible your machine is all clogged up .
Let us know

dl65  My computer is very old. We got it in '99, I believe. I'm running Windows 98, and I just defragged it about two months ago using Norton Systemworks.

Here's what the computer says just before it freezes up (if I'm so lucky as to have to monitor turn on.)

Verifying DMI Pool Data.........
Starting Windows 98...

C:\> SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H5 P330 T6

C:\>

_Another thing is that, the computer will not post most of the time. When it does, is when it gets to that one stage of start up and freezes. When it starts up normally it beeps once and the monitor goes on. My computer is not beeping.

[EDIT]
I removed everything from the back except the power supply. The first time I turned it on after that it started up normally with it's one beep, and then series of other normal sounds. I then shut it off, and just to make sure, turned it on again.... And it did not start normally.
[/EDIT]Heather .....Here's what I would try......first I would purchase a can of compressed duster ( air ) and with the power shut off ...open the side panels and blow out all the dust......and there could be a lot ......pay particular attention to the heat sink ( aluminun)  ....Blow all the dust off the fan blades...( use a nonmetalic object like a chop stick to prevent the blades from spinning while you blow away the dust) make sure to blow out the power supply well ( from the inside )
After you have all the dust removed .....close it back up and restart.....Now give n the machine is almost 5 years old you may wish to purge anything thats not being used or current .......Remember a computer never throws anything away.......it just moves it around to hidden files ........for EXAMPLE ...you could have 1000s of deleted Emails just sitting in the deleted file folder and so on ......The other thing you may wish to consider is .....doing a format of the Hard drive ( thats wiping it completely clean) and reloading the operating system . Should you choose to do this remember that everyrthing on there is LOST .........all data and programs....

let us know how you make out ....

dl65  more than likely a graphics card fault do you not if it an on board one?what happens to the monitor if you boot to safe mode f8 key on boot up..and when you have got this darn thing booted can you check the power options in the CONTROL panel....and all should be reading never.. and does your monitor have a drivers floppy with it..what make is the monitor and pc....and please be calm it not worth the heart failure..its just a tool...I'll try cleaning it, but I doubt it'll help. The computer refuses to start at all now. I can't get the monitor to turn on at all, and when I do it freezes up pretty quickly. You would be suprised as to what an obstacle dust can form for a PC to function properly.I'm inclined to agree with Merlin on this one.  Have you recently installed a video card or maybe taken it out and put it back?  Is the video onboard or is it a card? No, I have not done anything to it. This just came out of the blue. My dad is going to have to help me clean it and everything, so it could be a week or so until I know if cleaning it helps.Merlin and Joleen may be right here.  I've had a similar problem not that long ago.  It was the graphics card on it's way out - which was sometimes not allowing the monitor to turn on and sometimes was even causing a failure with bootup.  If you have a spare graphics card, this is well worth a try to solve your problem.

You had any progress since your last post?
hi all!
i also have the same problem as in recently i adjusted my BIOS setting to try to get more power out of my comp.....and then after that...it refuses to boot up at all!now it doesnt boot up at all but i can see all my fans and LEDs working, even my HD is spinning inside.....

help! could it be i fried my processor? or motherboard?

Solve : Not Display On Monitor?

Answer» HI,

I WONDER if anybody could give me some advice to my problem;

I've started up the computer and went to turn the monitor on, the monitor LED went to green then flicked BACK to yellow and displayed the message 'No Signal'.
Suspecting a dodgy monitor, I connected my newer and better monitor to the computer but I still received the same message 'No Signal'.
Also, the actual computer is making all the usual noises when I turn it on.

If anybody could tell me what the problem is and how to fix it, I'd appreciate it.

Solve : RED TONE?

Answer»

I am a complete computer idiot so I decided to join this forum.  My monitor does not show any red colors- It has lost the red tone.  Is this strictly a problem with my monitor, or could my computer have something to do with it?If your monitor shows one of those 'Signal Lost, Check Cable' things when you unplug the cable from the PC's video port, check that object to see if it also shows loss of red. If so, have the red driver in the video circuitry fixed or replace the monitor. (You can still use that monitor as a text only display on a secondary card...)

If the little signal lost thing has full colours or you don't have one, move the connected cable about behind the PC and make sure it is firmly socketted. If the red flickers in and out then, you have either a loose or bent plug pin, a broken signal wire in the cable, or a failing video card solder joint at its connector.

Unplug the video signal plug and inspect it for bent pins. If one is bent, you can try to slowly and gently put it back to its right position. If this is impossible without breaking it, you can get 'crimp on' video connectors at Radio Shark or other electronics stores (15 pin high density VGA plug), or solder ones if you're good at that.

With the PC shut down and unplugged, remove the graphics card and closely inspect the connector pin solder joins for cracks. A BRIGHT light and a magnifier are very helpful. Reheat and resolder them if they look questionable - only if you have the proper skills. Have a shop do it if you aren't skilled with electronics, or replace the card.

If nothing brings the red signal back, try another monitor. If it also shows poor red, replace the graphics card. If it shows normally, replace the red-less monitor.Good answer Maliktous.

Firstly though, if you have a spare monitor lying around, plug it in.  Alternately, if you have a second computer lying around (even an old one thats been sitting in the corner), plug the monitor into that.  At least that way you're narrowing down your problem from the START - you may not want to go around messing with your graphics card if the monitor is definitely the problem. One way to get rid of the red COLOUR in your monitor is by holding a magnet NEAR it. (It'll most likely turn yellow. From my experience.)

Any magnetic devices that could be interfering?what monitor is this and have you got the right drivers for it?

Solve : suddenly it automatically switch off..?

Answer»

hi...
1st i'm SORRY coz my english not so good..

my desktop pc... when i switch on it... and about 5-7 second it suddenly shut off by it self..

i ve checked the power supply...and i cant find the problem..i thought it might be my power suply blow out..

can somebody plz HELP me to settle tis problem>?.. i'm stuck wit tis bout couples of weeks.. and know i'm using my sis laptop..

plz...help me.. as soon as possiblle..Do you have a boot disk for DOS, or can you make a 'recovery' boot disk on your sister's PC?

Or can you make it into CMOS setup at all?

Also check your power switch. If it delays its return to off by about 4 seconds, the PC shuts off with it.

If you have anything in your BIOS Power MANAGEMENT set to wake or shut off your machine, disable it.

You may need to replace a weak power supply, or you just may need to strip the machine completely down to remove dust, then REASSEMBLE it. Or you may have a failing MB. My friend's system acted something like this when his MB processor voltage core regulators began deteriorating, on a Shuttle AK12 mainboard. He has a ASUS now.

Solve : hard disk Mystery?

Answer»

hi all,

have a 10 GB Seagate HDD - Primary Master , Win2000,
partitioned into C: & D: , CDRW is F:
recently BOUGHT a Samsung 80 GB HDD - set as Primary slave.

BIOS (in IDE config.) detects it but displays max. capacity as 65 GB - probably old motherboard ( INTEL SR440BX)

Device Manager detects it but can't FORMAT the drive ( can't find the drive letter - tried e: in cmd , says cannot find drive specified)

booted with a win98 floppy ( set 80GB as primary master ) . doesnt detect the drive. at A:\ , TYPED c:,d:,e: - nothing works

screwed around with BIOS and jumper SETTINGS ( including restricting HDD capacity to 32 GB ) - in vain .

also checked out Win2k HCL(Hardware compatibility list )
this HDD Samsung SP0802N not listed there )

am i missing something very basic ?

sorry for such a long one. am a novice and expect to learn from ur replies.

thanks in anticipationtry a bios update and is there anything in disk management>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;222189 that may help...you could also look into this>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;300415You are aware that Windows 98 cannot efficiently use disks that are larger than 65 Gigabyte?

It will most likely not be able to utulize the 15 gigabyte that are left over. I donot work with Windows 98, I upgrade to Windows XP as soon as Windows 98 is installed but I have noticed this problem with my 80 gigabyte Maxtor.gee.. thanks merlin. that was instantaneous and great

DM did the trick - it wrote some signature - now have 74.56 GB unallocated space - read somewhere that the 5 GB loss is due to File system overhead (but i haven't formatted it with any FS)

10 GB one is listed as basic
80 GB as dynamic

unfortunately i can't give the command format x: /fs:ntfs from cmd as it says it cannot find the drive specified.

tried the BIOS update initially,
but the BIOS version is so old Intel has stopped interactive support

and raptor... the OS installed here is Windows 2000

another amateur question :
how do i format the new disk such that i can install both linux and windows on it.

available : Fedora Core cds , Win98 cd ( read somewhere that one had to install linux first and then windows ??)

thnx

hi u SURE that will work  Well friend. Right click on the dektop and select properties. Goto setting TAB. Here you can see "Screen Resolution", so move the arrow towards "less" and press apply. If this work then fine otherwise, open an window "INTERNET Explorer". Goto "VIEW" menu and look for "text size" and select medium.
I do hope that this will solve you problem.
Dur-E-WahabWhich PART of the screen? Did you change the resolution, or is it as simple as holding down the Ctrl key and USING the scroll-wheel on the mouse?

Solve : Unrecognizable Hard Drive?

Answer»

Ok, this seems like a pretty typical problem, but I cannot figure out what is going wrong.  Here's the story...

I just recently bought a new computer.  I transfered most of the stuff I wanted on the old computer through floppy discs.  However, there was something rather big that I couldn't use floppys for.  Rather than using common sense, I decided I could just take out the old hard drive and hook it up to another computer.

I was attempting to take out the hard drive (1Gb) out of an old Micron running Win 95.  It has a Pentium II and I think about 233 Mhz, and put that into a Dell running Win ME.  I thought I knew what I was doing, but I didn't.  I at first tried to install the hard drive without switching the jumpers (in other words, both hard drives were set to master).  Obviously my computer wasn't recognizing it and in fact my computer froze.  I couldn't figure out why it was freezing.  So then my friend had the brilliant (well not so brilliant) idea of connecting the two computers while they were both on.  Luckily we didn't KILL ourselves, but I have to admit that the old Micron was imporperly shut down several times.

I then wised up and realized one needed to be set to slave.  I did that with the old 1Gb hard drive.  However, my newer computer still didn't recognize it.  Fine I thought, and so I installed it back into the old Micron.  Then I borrowed a FLASH drive from my friend and went to recover my files that way.  However, when I went to turn it on, it said it failed to find a proper boot disk.  Upon entering setup I realized it was not even recognizing that the hard drive was there.  I checked all the cables and everything is good.  In fact, I even tried switching cables, and every time the cd rom and the zip drive are recognized, but never the hard drive.

The files are not absolutely necessary to get, but I was planning on giving the computer away to someone that really NEEDS one and I told them that I'd get it to them soon (this was before the accident).  Is there anyone out there that can help me?

ThanksWhat kind of hard disk are you talking about?

Did you check to see if the BIOS recognizes your hard disks, and if not, did you set it to auto-detect?When I said hard disk, I meant my hard drive (I hope that answers the question).  When I go into BIOS it does not recognize that anything is there.  I have set it to auto detect (several times actually), tried setting it back to default settings, but still nothing.I just realized you may have been asking me what kind of hard drive I am using.  If this is the case, I am using a Maxtor 541DX 20 Gb hard drive (I don't know why I said 1 GB before).I meant the type of hard disk, yes.

I donot quite understand what you mean with

You should E-mail Maxtor tech SUPPORT and explain what has happened.

uhh, Did you set the jumpers on the Micron's drive back to Single/Master?I have had a similar problem. I was trying to save data from a friend's hard drive by removing his hard drive and connecting it to my own computer (as a slave), then copying the data to mine.  However, my system will recognize the drive but only shows its contents as a recycled folder. No other information or data is shown. My friend's hard drive is set as slave when connected to my computer, and the auto detect on my system is set to on.

Any suggestions?

Solve : RAM not being utilized?

Answer»

Hey everyone,

I have a strange problem with my RAM.  I should have 2GB of RAM but instead my computer is only RECOGNIZING 96MB.

Even the BIOS says there is only 96MB.  All I can think of is that there is EITHER a manufacturing problem with the chip or a problem with my BIOS software.

Anyone have any ideas? What is the maximum amount of RAM that your mainboard SUPPORTS?

Scott......Is this something that just STARTED or is the pc NEW to you?
please let us know......maybe there's a Ram thief out there .

Solve : installed new hardware now problems...?

Answer» HI all, after installing my new geforce2 mx 100/200 64mb video card and its drivers, every time I exit a video game like Blade Runner the screen just goes black, if I press the windows button on the keyboard the taskbar will appear with the start icon and clock in the bottom hand right of the screen and I can click on them and everything but the desktop does not appear or the icons. Is my new video card causing this problem? or is my computer just lagging after me playing a game for so long?
At one stage I got a system recource message saying my system recources are extremely low, ??
Here are my system specs:

Windows 98
AMD K6-2 500mhz
64mb of RAM
Geforce2 MX 100/200 64mb video card
Dolphin 2 channel sound card
6 gig hard drive
CDROM drive
Floppy Drive

I did some research on this message and apparently ts because of programs that are running in the background but all I have is explorer,Rundll32,Netropa Hot Key (keyboard SOFTWARE) and FMctrl (sound control)

Rundll32 has only just appeared after installing the video card so.... what could it be?
This is on my computer in my room, basically a project in working progress but has been running fine scince the new video card.Did you install the latest drivers for your videocard?

I recommend you shut down Netropa Hot Key (keyboard software) after resetting and then play the game. See if this is causing it.try knocking down the graphics accelerator..right-click with MOUSE on desktop...click the properties tab then the setting tab then the advanced tab  performance tab....hardware accelerator...try that.I have installed only the drivers that came with the video card but I cannot find any updated versions for my model.
I shut down that keyboard software program and I knocked the hardware acceleration down to level 2, everything seems back to normal now. Thanks alot

But I am curious about that message about my system recources when I go into system information it says I have 86% free, is this correct or should it be higher or lower?
Also I bought the motherboard and hardware off my mate and he said there's actually 128mb installed but dxdiag and system info is only detecting 64mb installed, maybe this could cause that error message too?Ok there has been a recent turn in events, because my hardware acceleration is lower I cant play any games that require Direct3D and putting the acceleration level back to full causes the screen to go blank after playing one of my games.Does it only happen to Blackrunner? If yes, patch or reinstall the game.

If it happens to more 3D FPS games, install these videocard drivers: http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_56.64

Search for instructions on the website.

When you turn your acceleration to full, is the keyboard SHORTCUT software running?

What other tabs do you have near your 'performance' tab where you set hardware acceleration to a lower level?

Yeah so far its only happening with Blade Runner, this game doesn't require Direct3D because its an OLDER game. I have installed the latest drivers for my video card, but what I'm doing now for Blade Runner is I'm minimizing the window and then pressing ctrl+alt+delete and ending the game that way, it works.

I dont really want to disable the keyboard software because I only just bought it and this keyboard has so many cool functions.
Thanks alot guys.
