Solve : RPM of HDD for laptop.?

Answer»

is the rpm of an HDD can affect the internet speed browsing? is it the best to choose or replace my HDD to 7200rpm to make it faster internet speed?

im using modem to connect to internet with 460.8kbps
Pentium3 450Mhz but the speed is to slow.
256MB RAM, 10GB HDD.

need your help....The speed of the HDD has little or no effect on browsing. More RAM might help some, otherwise there is not much that can be DONE to increase the speed of a 56K modem. What type of Internet connection do you have? Is it DSL? What's the claimed maximum speed for your Internet service, PER your ISP?

What OS are you running? If Win XP, then, yes, more RAM might help.im using my N70 Phone to connect to internet with 460.8kbps

Solve : Overheating laptops?

Answer»

This is my first post, so I'll start with probably a couple of stupid questions but I can't find the answers on the net.

I am looking to buy a laptop; so far a Toshiba with an Intel Core2 Duo T7200 2 Ghz processor, 2048 Mb RAM, 400Gb HardDrive, this is going to cost me a huge amount of money over the next year and I don't want to have to spend much more.

So question? I read about some laptops getting hot after only about an hour, how long can you use laptops before they need a break, I thought they'd be just like a PC but smaller.

2 There's not much info on battery life, and no mention of mains POWER connections, these things do run off the mains don't they.

Sorry to sound so ignorant but I've NEVER had one before so I just don't knowLaptops nowadays have pretty good cooling systems. I'm currently using one right now and it's been on all day, every day.
They are pretty much like mini PCs.
I don't really know about battery life but this one is plugged into the wall so no power problems there.
Another thing I should mention, if your laptop is in a very hot and stuffy place, there is a slight change of it over heating.

That Toshiba laptop you got there, it's pretty god. What are you planning on doing with this new laptop?
If you are just going to surf the net or something, you could probably SAVE a bit of money.
If you are going to use it for games, that pretty much works.Yeah laptops can get quite hot (actually you should never place a laptop in your lap ) but they shouldn't overheat. Some laptop brands have had some problems with overheating but that is the manufacturer's fault and in such a case you should get a replacement.

Yes all laptops can be connected to a power outlet. Thanks for that, I didn't think anybody was going to reply until I remembered somebody mentioning the refresh icon, duh!

I'm going to use the Laptop as a PC really, my old PC is nearing it's end, so the basics plus a bit of gaming and it will be surffing while i work i.e. Word and on-line. plus I don't want it to need upgrading or replacing anytime soon

DaveIn the event that you should have problems with heating, there are special laptop coolers available. They are inexpensive. There two types of power options. Some will run from the USB port (not recommended) and others have their own power adapter.I'm looking for a laptop to and I use Toshiba Tecra M1 (4years old) right now.
I love it it is a good make for laptops but they are more expensive.
If you want a cheaper laptop I suggest that you take a look at the Dell site.

JONAS Some laptops do get hot after a while, the only way you can tell whether or not this will happen is by checking reviews.
Battery life is also something that can be found out from reviews - Google and notebookreview.com are good sources of info.
Finally, if you want this laptop as a replacement for your current PC, why not get a desktop instead?
They're a lot better value for money, and easier to upgrade and repair.
Quote
If you are going to use it for games, that pretty much works.
Carbon . . . I see no mention of the graphics card, so how do you come to that conclusion? If you're about to shell out a ton of money, go for the whole shebang- get a good name brand with a good WARRANTY. My Dell laptop had a great warranty, however the screws kept falling out of it... Just remember RAM can be upgraded, as can most connectivity features like WiFi or even IEEE1394 via PCMCIA cards. The CPU and the GPU card you chose will be yours for life. Don't make my mistake and get the onboard ATI 16mb graphics...Quote
I'm going to use the Laptop as a PC really
I assume you mean desktop, if that's the case then buy a new desktop PC and forget the laptop.
Of course if you have a real need for a laptop then carry on. Well I know a desktop is cheaper and easier to repair but (My opinion) I find that one Major advantage is:
You can carry it around everywhere you go.
E.G. I'm am laying in my bed when I'm typing this.
I don't think that is possible with a desktop.

Jonas I hope you have your laptop on a hard flat surface Jonas.Nope in my lap but I have a Pentium M(obile) It doesn't get to hot.
Or it there an other reason why it has to be on a hard flat surface?

Jonas Avoiding extra heat is the reason for using it on a hard flat surface, your laptop will run cooler.
Heat is the enemy of all electronic components, any heat.Well it doesn't work like it has to and it isn't going to last for much longer so I'll enjoyed it as long as I can.
(Maybe that is the reason why it is STARTING to have all those hardware problems.)
Well I do lots of stuff that you should do with a computer like playing music in the bathroom while I'm washing. I know H2O isn't good for it either.
But the laptop is already 4years old and is still running (can't say it is running properly but it is running.)

Solve : Damaged Ethernet Port?

Answer»

Hi all...... Looking for some help here. I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop with a damaged ethernet port (someone tripped over it while PLUGGED in, DEFINITELY broke some of the connections but mother board seems to be ok). I am looking for a way to connect to my ISP without the EXPENSE of repair. Will an external adapter work, say a Belkin external ethernet express card work??? Any suggestions will be much appreciated!!You have some empty PCI slots, right? Then, get one of these:
Network Interface Cards (x) > Interface : PCISoybean, it's a laptop.
If you got a pcmcia slot in that laptop you can get a pcmcia network card.
Dell inspiron 5100 has a PCMCIA slot so that would work.
But I would suggest a usb adaptor.
I believe a USB adaptor is cheaper.

Jonas QUOTE from: Deerpark on August 08, 2007, 10:03:26 AM

Soybean, it's a laptop.
Oops! My mistake. Thanks to all who offered help......will look into both options! And if you choose to go the PCMCIA slot route check your owner's manual to determine which type you have...Wow, didn't know there was any different Pcmcia slot distinctions. Any idea what a Dell Inspiron 5100 might have? I misplaced my manual when I moved......->Google<-

Solve : Hardive?

Answer»

I have this hardrive all the markings are ripped off it and it works inside my computer some what. Some how it didnt have a driver for it and I was going to get one for it ,but I dont even KNOW what brand it is. I googled some Hardrive finders and I went to one ,but I'm not sure. This one may be too old its a 15 GB hardrive small for today but anyways if anyone could help me please feel free too reply.1.Start

2. right click my computer click MANGE

3.you will be prompt with computer management

4.go down to device MANGER , you will see a long list of your hardware , and components

5.click disk drives , DOUBLE click the drive you see

6.what ever you see in that box is your hard drive , if it says WD its western digital ......

But just post it in here and i will hunt something down for you , even if its the initials , just post it , in fact you can even try google it yourself and see what you find.....

another thing that sticker is your warranty , unless it is expired , you can kiss a replacement good bye if your HD fails.......One more thing . . . hard drives don't need drivers.I didnt think hardrives had drivers but the thing is when I plug it in and turn it on it has windows xp on it. When I turn it on the windows XP program loads up to the start screen where it prompts me to install recommended hardware or connect to the internet so does that mean I need an update for it? I cant connect to the internet in the first place because I dont have the internet installed on that hardrive. I tryied to click cancel but it prompted me 2 seconds after I was planning on downloading a program to my keydrive and running the updated program their. I was also planning on making it a slave to my 40GB maxtor. I dont know theirs no markings on the reflective case its almost oval shaped in design not like a normal square one. no serial codes I got it from work tho and the majority of the computers are compacts thats all I can tell you about it.So you mean it already has XP installed on the drive?
HOOK it up as a slave to your current drive and format it.

Solve : Wierd monitor problem?

Answer»

Ok I'm not sure what's caused this but here goes.

The past couple days, verticle green lines just appear on the screen at random times. When I'm online it's usually 10x worse. LIKE when scrolling up and down the lines get progressively worse until they practically are over a good part of the screen. The lines go away DEPENDING on what web page i'm on, but there are 7 lines across the screen, about 3 pixels wide each in various places on the screen that just will not go away. I've tried demagnetizing the screen but the lines will not go away. So I figured I'd ask for some help. Thanks for any advice.Sounds like the graphics chip MAY be failing.
Is this onboard or an add on card ? ?
If it is a card REMOVE a side panel with all the power removed and remove the card and reseat it. Take the time to do some housekeeping inside the case while you're in there using a can of compressed air to clean all heatsinks and fans. Use a QTip to HOLD the fan blades in place when blasting.
When finished power up and check to make sure all fans are operating properly.
If it still has lines then you will need to replace the vid card...

Solve : Grainy "Noise" on LCD monitor?

Answer»

I recently bought a Samsung Syncmaster 731BF LCD monitor and I am having a bit of an issue with it.

I experience a sort of grainy "noise" on the screen, especially in games in darker areas - I dont really notice it in lighter areas or when not in a game. It sort of looks like transparent "white noise" thats of very fine grain thats SUPERIMPOSED into the picture. - Almost like the effect the wrong refresh rate on a CRT monitor would give.

Im running a Leadtek Winfast Geforce 7800GS with the latest forceware drivers and the monitor has the proper Samsung drivers installed.

Any ideas would be helpful.

ThanksThe THING about lcd screens they tend to overheat....... i have 2 up from your screen , and my screen goes red hot ....... try and leave it off for a few hours if you can........ you can feel how hot your screen is with your hand , don't put to much pressure on it .....

Tony Unfortunately it does exactly the same thing whether I have just FIRED up my machine for the DAY or if it's been on for 24 hours, so it isn't a question of heat.wheres the noise coming form ? I'm not talking about actual physical "noise" as in sound, I'm referring to a slight flickering of the monitor, a sort of grainy distortion that is only apparent when the area displayed is darkish in nature.

Solve : pci slots?

Answer»

hello i would just like to KNOW how you can determine which type of pci slot you have?
how do i know whether i have 32 bit or 64 bit pci slots?

i am looking to buy a ETHERNET card and some of them have 32 bits and some have 64 bits so i need to know.

thanks for any help.
Exactly what is the MAKE and model of your computer and/or motherboard?

I believe it's highly unlikely you have 64-bit PCI slots. Per http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/dec04/articles/pcnotes.htm:
"I've never seen any 64-bit slots or expansion cards either, and none of the motherboards in any of the PCs I've had during the last 13 years have featured any PCI slots other than standard-width 32-bit ones running at 5V, with a 33MHz clock and 133MB/second maximum throughput."

And, where did you even find a 64-bit Ethernet card? Everything I see at Newegg.com is 32-bit; see
Network Interface Cards (x) > Interface : PCI

So, get a 32-bit card. thanks for your help. im UNSURE of my motherboard make but this is the SITE where i saw the 64 bit Ethernet card
http://thepcoutlet.co.uk/category_list.asp?subcat=141&sortby=subcat&brand=&parentcat=Networking

p.s which one would you recommend me getting from that site.

thanks. This one: http://thepcoutlet.co.uk/product.asp?code=520584haha!! thats the one i was thinking of too, just needed some expert opinion.

Solve : Processor?

Answer»

Ok someone answer me fast lol.
Please

Should I get a Core 2 DUO E6850 Processor 3.0 GHZ with 1333 FSB or a Quad Processor 2.4GHZ with a 1066 FSB what I am asking is which is better? The E6850 in my opinion, the1333 FSB , the cores communicate through the FSB*

PC Maximum where I get some of this info would tell you to go with the Quad cpu (for the future apps which just are not available today).... I think the faster core duo's are amazing cpu's and are a great choice right now* Who knows what will be on the market in 2 years? The core duo's will rock till then, so there you go....

The Core 2 Extreme QX6850 is the fastest cpu available today

you could buy a Yugo for that kinda bling! i agree. For extreme multitasking, the quad core is better.
For LESS multitasking, or gaming, the dual core is slightly faster with a faster FSB as honvetops mentioned. If you don't plan on overclocking, the Q6600 is better.

If you do plan on overclocking, then the E6750 is better than the E6850.

For futureproofing, the Q6600 is "probably" better, but you can just UPGRADE to Yorkfield later on so I SUGGEST buying the E6750 and overclock to at least 3.6Ghz which would be very easy with a GOOD cooler.

Solve : how can i make 2 Monitor's Work at once?

Answer»

I have a laptop with an external VGA port. I have a monitor which i want to connect to my laptop and see my laptop on both monitors. I plugged the monitor into my laptop, it showed up on the monitor but the laptop's screen went black. How can i make it VIEWABLE on both screens?Sorry but don't know the answer.
I also CURIOUS to know the answer.
let's see wait watch. What make and model is your laptop? What's your OS? Was the DISPLAY on the external monitor your normal laptop display, with all the icons, the taskbar, etc.?

Try this. Connect the external monitor again and startup. Assuming the same thing happens again, right click on the screen and select Properties. Select the Settings tab. Do you see two monitors graphically represented there?

I'll wait until you respond to the above questions before going further.

My laptop is an "ASUS Lamborghini Vx2"

Windows Vista.

Yes, it does show both monitor's in the display settings.I presume it's showing #1 as the external monitor and #2 as the laptop monitor, based on it's behavior. The active monitor will appear brighter in the Settings panel; the other one, somewhat grayed out. Right click on #2, or the inactive one, and check the box for "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor." You might also want to check the box for "Use this device as the primary monitor." Click APPLY and OK. How are we doing now?Sorry i forgot to tell you. im not actually doing it now because my laptop is at work. will try it in a few weeks. thanks for the help, it should work."... in a few weeks?" You won't be using that laptop for that long? Why, then, did you ask about this now?I meant "With in" a few weeks. I asked now because there could be a chance i use it tomorrow.

and it currently has no operating system on it. OK, let us know how it goes.go to control panel, then display go to settings click on the big #2, and below check box that says extend my windows desktop onto this monitor. You can now drag icons over to the monitor. you can also minimize a window and drag it to that monitor. It's like having two computers.

Solve : Can i repalce this hard drive??

Answer»

I have an older Dell XPS 8933 and I want to repalce the hard drive for use as sort of a main storage for may small home network.
Could I use an SCSI U320 80PIN drive?
If so do I need other adaptors?

I want to use the Maxtor Atlas 15K drive

Thanks! You will need a SCSI controller card to do this. Thanks!!

Uh.... is that acceptable or does adding such a card get unrealiable? Oh sorry one other thing. I am in no way a computer tech guy, does it matter how many "Pins" there are for the drive??Every time you add new hardware it runs the risk of making your system less reliable, cheap MANUFACTURERS and their SHODDY drivers being the main reason. But with a good brand, you won't run into many problems.

Yes, the number of pins matters -- a drive with 80 pins won't plug into a card that only has 68 pins. Ordering though is simple enough -- just ask for a U320 80-pin scsi card, voila!

SCSI DRIVES are typically very reliable, long-lasting drives as they're intended (and priced) for ENTERPRISE use.

Solve : I need a lot more space.?

Answer»

Lately I've been working on a lot of video projects. A lot a lot. Right now I have 730 gigs of captured files for two DVD's on EXTERNAL hardrives.

I want to ADD about a terabyte. Sounds stupid and unnecessary I know, but when it comes to the times that I'm working on this much stuff it would be great.

I know Western Digital makes a terabyte external firewire hardrive for about $370. For that price I could get about 3 internal 500 gig hard drives. I only have room to expand with one.

So, what would my options be for linking my PC with ANOTHER BOX full o' hard drives? The only thing I've heard of is serial.

thanks again
An add on PCI IDE card would give you room for 4 more IDE drives...
They are also available for SATA drives if that is the way you want to go.
I would look into some cooling options and also make sure your PSU can handle that much more.

PSU CalculatorI would go with "patio" on this onePerhaps her problem is not lack of IDE channels, but PHYSICAL space in the computer?

IT's not the cheapest solution, but they do make external enclosures for multiple harddrives. I would recommend eSATA or SAS, the latter of which can be expensive, but, probably the best solution for handling large video files. If you just wish to store the information, external USB or firewire drives aren't a bad idea.

Solve : Wich processer is better?

Answer»

Hi

Can anyone tell me wich is the better processer: AMD Opteron 165 (E6 version) or Athlon 64 Fx-57 (E4 version)

I am getting a GEFORCE 8800 gts and am not sure if the Athlon 64 3800 is good enough to run along side this card.

Thanks! The FX-57 is better than the Opteron 165.
However, for most games the Athlon 3800 will be fine.
Personally, I'd say if you want an upgrade, go for a new board instead, based on Socket AM2 or 775, for the newer AMD or Core 2 processors respectively.
Socket 939 has a limited lifespan now, and you won't get a better CPU than the FX-57 so I wouldn't recommend spending too much on it.the fx-57 is betterGet a better cpu. I overclocked my 3800+ to 2.4Ghz and it SUFFICED and with a 8800GTX ran COUNTER Strike Source at about 140FPS but still I like having more power.

Solve : Computer reboots!?

Answer»

HI!

I'm not SURE if any of you have had this problem. One of my computers reboots everytime the power SWITCHES from the power supply to the UPS. I don't have a seperate UPS for the computer. I have one for the entire house. And this seems to work on my other computers. They don't reboot when power fails and the UPS switches to battery. I've tried CHANGING the SMPS in the computer...no luck

This problem is DEFINITELY limited to the computer. I hope I have explained the problem clearly. Any ideas....anyone??You could TRY turning off auto re-boot on system failure and also try the computer from an outlet that doesn't cause any problems.
This has the makings of an interesting thread.

Solve : Computer can't find memory?

Answer»

I just installed a 512 mb stick of ram in my compaq presario v2000, and I already have a 256 mb stick of ram in there. So I should have 768 total. But my computer is for some reason only using 640 mb of it. In the bios, it shows all of the ram there. In fact, when I run sisoft sandra, it tells me that I have the full amount, except under the motherboard setting, where it shows me that I don't. So, CLEARLY (I think), some parts of my computer are recognizing the ram, while others aren't. I'm a bit confused--help?If you have the video built in on the motherboard it will take up RAM. Is you video 128MB? Because that's the difference between 640 & 768.

Alan <><
Right, and, in My Computer | Properties | General, Windows will report the total physical MEMORY installed less the amount a shared/dedicated memory in a system with onboard video. So, if the amount of system memory allocated to video is 128MB, then Windows would report 640MB, as it's been trained to do by Microsoft. Quote

If he had a socket AM2 board and was in the UK that wouldn't be too bad.

Synyster, yes you can upgrade your processor.
But that PC is just not cut out for a gaming rig, for MODERN games you'll need a new graphics card, more RAM and a faster CPU. Socket 939 CHIPS are hard to find and expensive now, so you may even want to upgrade your motherboard, which means changing your RAM too. In other words, you'd probably be better off looking at a WHOLE new computer for gaming.
