Solve : Computer Does Not Boot?

Answer»

Hello, yesterday before I left for my brother's House my computer was working just fine, I may have turned it on that session by hitting the reset button, don't know if that would cause any problems or not.. But 2 hours later I came back home to turn my computer on, and my computers fan lights would just blink and turn back off. The very back fan in my PC would turn on for like a second and turn off. Nothing is turning on the lights do but for only like a second. On my motherboard the green light is on and so is my Ethernet Light. I have changed the power cord, and even changed electrical plugs and still nothing. I am using the Apevia ICEBERG 680W power supply, at this point I think it's the power supply. Please help if you have any solutions or second opinons.Take a voltage meter and find out what your PSU is reading to make sure it's your PSU.what if i don't have access to one.Quote from: jc38723 on July 27, 2007, 01:52:51 PM

what if i don't have access to one.
Ok have you tried disconnecting everything , and reconnecting it back up ...... are you 100% sure all wires are intact , something may have come loose one of the fans may have knocked a wires out ..... this is a possibility as this happened to me yesterday.... i don't think this has anything to do with your volts as you said it was working before .... it could be 2 things , take a good look in your computer and make sure everything is linked up correctly ...... you seem PRETTY computer handy so i wont bother posting a picture of what needs to be connected but if you do want a picture just ask .

Solve : Built a new computer?

Answer»

Hey, new to the site, so I'm not REALLY sure if this sort of problem has been addressed.

I just built a new computer, built an AMD based one before with crossfire, and it worked fine. This time, I built a Intel based computer with SLI. The problem that I'm having is that when I turn it on, it gets power, but none of the CD drives seem to be getting any power, nor the monitor and keyboard/mouse. You can hear the hard drive come on, but it just kinda sits there after you hear it the FIRST time, and I'm not getting that 'beep' you get before the computer enters into the BIOS. I checked the jumpers and made sure EVERYTHING was securely connected, but I'm now at a dead end.

here are some of the components of the computer

motherboard - ASUS P5N32-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard

CPU - Intel CORE 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor

RAM - G.SKILL 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)

Power supply - Powertek PowerTek770W ATX 12V 2.2 / EPS 12V 770W

Graphics card - EVGA 640-P2-N821-AR GeForce 8800GTS 640MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP (x2)

...almost tempted to take this thing to Best Buy and have them get it running. Any thoughts would be appreciated.Pull all the components from the case and do a bench test...
Hook up only the following:
PSU
CPU
1 stick of RAM
Monitor
Keyboard and mouse
Vid Card.

Make note of any beep codes. If it posts properly continue adding one component at a time til you find the culprit.

p.s. @ other questions : Did you remember to USE thermal compound ? ?
Did you use the MBoard standoffs when assembling ? ?

Solve : E6600 or wait for Q6600?

Answer»

Now wondering if i should WAIT JULY 22nd and get Q6600 instead of E6600 with 44$ price difference. Is it

worth WAITING then buy quad core for $44 price difference or just stick with core 2 duo?
It's up to you.
My guess is that quad-core cpus will be standard in 2-3 years anyways.Intel just cut the price almost in 1/2 on the E6600...retail price cuts should show up by Monday...

Solve : Monitor "stuck" in low resolution 16-bit mode?

Answer»

My computer monitor (a Dell system) is "STUCK" in LOW resolution 16-bit mode and I can't change it.
I've dowlnloaded a DRIVER from the Dell site but can't use it.
I've gone through the settings, advanced, properties proceedure, but the properties control is grayed out (disabled) so I can't use it.
For a few weeks my computer seemed to have "fixed itself?" and worked fine in higher resolution, but today it was stuck back to the low res mode.
Does anyone know how to enable the properties so I can use the driver downloaded from the Dell site.
Thank you,
Mikel Morris
Try UNINSTALLING the current driver from the hardware manager, REBOOT, and then install the dell driver.
If that doesn't work, disable to video driver, reboot, and then install.
The proper video driver should be on the Dell driver CD that shipped with your machine...

[Saving disk space - OLD attachment deleted by admin]what brand and model is your computer? Dell, HP, eMachines? how old is it?
Is it running windows xp or vista?
did the drive work correctly in the past? when did it stop working right?
brand and model of the ext. drive would be HELPFUL also.
thanks.DLoad and run Everest Home...it will tell you more than you need to know about your machine...I have the very same problem and it was a pain to troubleshoot it. I never got it working right. It seems that I have unplug the USB connector and plug it back in EVERY time I want to use the drive if it has been powered down between times.

Solve : no floppy or CD drive in BIOS?

Answer»

I was going to IMAGE my operating drive. I have tried TWO boot discs and neither works. The floppy blinks at boot up with the disc in but goes RIGHT through the normal boot. The floppy and CD read in windows. But in BIOS settings under boot sequence neither the floppy or DVD drive show up – only the hard drives (yes, I toggled through to make sure I saw everything!). I checked in case the sequence did not have the floppy first but you can’t make it first if it does not appear. The DVD drive shows up on the second page of the BIOS settings , so it is being detected, but does not show up in the boot sequence menu so that you can have it boot from there first either. There have been flash updates done to the board recently but I do not know if the failure was from that. Any ideas??p.s the board is an Intel D945PVS which I would NEVER buy again. The CPU is Intel Dual Core 3.2

Solve : Video Card compatibility w/lower resolution LCD display (?)?

Answer»

Hello - After recently purchasing a laptop, I discovered that the high resolution makes reading the tiny print impossible. I can adjust most of the text on a page to a larger size; however, there are no adjustments AVAILABLE to enlarge the graphics and news captions of the home pages of a few ISPs. Being a NOVICE in graphics knowledge, I'd like to know if it's doable to REPLACE the video card in the new computer w/one that supports lower resolutions.

HP Pavillion dv9000
OS - Vista
NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 graphics
RAM - 2 Gigs

Is this enough information?

Thank you!

marlene
As far as I know laptop graphics are built into the motherboard.

Have you tried lowering the resolution in the grahichs settings?, you are probaly set to the native resolution for the monitor but it is possible to lower the resolution.

Right click on the desktop and choose "Properties"

Now select the "Settings" tab

You should now see a slider bar for the screen resolution, try moving to the left a bit at a time until you get to a resolution you are comfortable with.Quote from: Buscrew on July 26, 2007, 11:36:32 AM

Buscrew - Thanks for responding. Prior to posting, I tested a few resolutions and one (not the Native, of course) worked better than the others. I'm still darn curious about why the change in Properties didn't make my ISP Home Page larger ()

Internet Explorer...not sure how to find out the version number as I'm new (1 day) to Vista...will check it out & post it asa I find it.

marleneVista... that should be IE 7.
You can confirm this by selecting help from the menu bar and clicking About Internet Explorer. (If you can't see the menu bar, press Alt on your keyboard.)

You can increase the text size in IE by selecting View from the menu bar and select Text Size. The standard setting is medium but you could try a higher setting. Don't know if that helps with your problem.Or hold down CTRL and move the scroll wheel on the mouse...Quote from: usermm12 on July 26, 2007, 11:24:03 AM

The previous two POSTS have stated ways to control text size in your browser. However, the only way to change the size of graphics, relative to your overall screen, is to change the resolution in your display settings.

Solve : Think Pad R40 Problems?

Answer»

I have a think pad R40 which was giving me a fan error. I ordered a fan from IBM and replaced the fan. The fan seems to turn on now but if I try to boot I have to go into the BIOS. I don't have to change any of the settings just go in then exit. It will boot like normal but SHORTLY after booting it starts to act strange. The screen flickers and it freezes. Also my touch pad stopped working. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am running windows XP Pro with SP2. I have 256 Ram.

I just plugged the fan in is there something I need to configure? Also do I need to put some gel where the fan touches the processor? The folks at IBM said no put in there repair manual it says to put some there. If I do what kind and where can I buy some.

Thanks

Ben
I'm going to let someone a little more knowledgeable answer your question about the fan, but as far as your TOUCHPAD goes, I had some problems with my touchpad on my Dell laptop previously and all it TOOK was downloading a new driver for it from Dell's website. You can see if IBM has any new DRIVERS for it. Just a though... I recommend Arctic Silver thermal compound...complete instructions on application procedures are available at their website...
Any decent COMPUTER shop should have it.

Solve : Computer Not Recognizing Plug and Play Devices?

Answer»

My computer will not recognize plug and play devices. These include anything PLUGGED into a USB PORT such as my iPod or Digital Camera. It also does not recognize my printer or CD Drive. I emailed Microsoft Support and after I told them their solution did not work they STOPPED emailing. Please Help.

Computer Information
Dell Dimension DIM3000 Intel (R)
CELERON (R) CPU 2.40GHz
512 MB of RAMhmm how long has this been HAPPENING for........when did it start......did you make or can you think of any prior changes you would have made you your bios before this happened...This started in May, and I don't think I even know how to make changes to BIOS.well usually this means one of your usb ports is playing around....have you tried the device in any other sockets...Yes, and still no luck.Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager...find every instance of USB hubs and roots...right click each one and select Remove/Uninstall.
You will get a warning message...ignore it.
Upon re-boot Windows will automatically re-install them.
Try it now.My computer now recognizes the printer, but I can't print because I need to put the software on it. And I can't do that because the computer still does not recognize the drive.

The drive is listed as SONY CD-RW CRX320EE, it is supposed to be SONY CD-RW CRX320AEDo the same procedure above for the CDRom drive...if this doesn't work the drive may have gone South.

Solve : Uh Ooooooooh!?

Answer»

Came in here yesterday, turned my machine on then went to get a cup of coffee. Came back and the M$ splash screen progression bar was stopped cold half-way. Couldn't power off so I hit the off on my power strip. Turned it back on and all was well. Nothing spooky happened all day.

Did some trouble shooting with no results. My actions the night before were to reinstall AVG, uninstall my printer (had issues, needed to reinstall), the reinstall didn't go so well. Going to have to attempt it again when I am in the mood.

Same thing this morning, BUT unplugging it and turning back on didn't work for about 40 times! So, I did it once more and booted into Safe Mode to see if I could find the problem. No luck. Everything is working.

Here's my theory: My hdd is on the way out. Somewhere in ALL those CDs I have a program to tell me if it is the hdd, but I wanted to throw it out to you all. Oh, all is well when I restart, everything goes like it should.

This isn't a huge problem. I did a backup CD just in case I need to replace the hdd. And, trust me, on this box THAT is going to be a temper tantrum thing! It is very hard to get to. Not like anything I have ever seen and I have replaced many of them on many different machines.

I GUESS I could run HiJackthis but I am not sure that will tell me anything.

Oh, I uninstalled AVG to see if that was the problem. Not.

Run your hdd makers diagnostics to check it out. Free program downloadable from the mfrs site and probably take less time than searching thru' all the cd's.

Might be time to run Memtest86 too.

Could just be that the plugs need to be reseated.

Good luck.Reseated my RAM. Ran Everest to see if there was a problem there. Yes, a DIAGNOSTIC test would be my first thought, but I have NO idea the manufacture's name! I think I will get into the BIOS in a bit and see.

However, unloading AVG seems to have been the problem. Booted right up this morning. Still I will run the diagnostic. HP is famous for using WD hdds, so I will go there.

Thanks!! Quote

You should run MEMTEST to check for ram problems and Everest to find out what hdd you have.LOL I did look in Everest to see if the hdd name was in there but it wasn't. Doesn't Win2000 do a memtest on boot? Like it would give me a checksum if things weren't well?

BUT the problem was fixed. After dumping AVG, which isn't a good idea, but I will do something over the weekend. I was hoping it was the hdd so I could put in one of my other hdd's! This one is SOOOO small!

Post the Everest log here by copy/paste...i've never seen a HDD it couldn't identify...This is the only thing Everest says about it

FieldValue
Disk DriveST34321A (4 GB, 5400 RPM, Ultra-ATA/33)

NM I found it. It is a Seagate Medalist 4321

Thank you for making me get off my duff and looking deeper into Everest!! Now I am off to find the diagnostic tool. And I know they have one, I used it on a friends computer a couple months ago.

THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Now you did it! I generated all the reports Everest has, which means that now I have to get on the reinstall of my printer!! Okay, here's a good one. Just how do I get to a DOS prompt to do a memtest? I can't do it from RUN. MemTest runs outside of Windows...normally you boot to either the floppy or CD CREATED and let it do it's thing.
It won't run properly from a command prompt either. The zipped ISO file can be downloaded here..

Good luckQuote from: JannE on August 03, 2007, 08:32:17 PM

Solve : usb flash drive and camera suddenly not visible?

Answer»

Hi again Patio

They do not show up in Windows explorer, I have looked at it repeatedly and I am afraid they are still not there.
I have assigned new drive LETTERS for them in disk management but nothing in my computer either.

Derrylodgederrylodge,You are certainly in good hands with Patio trying to assist you.I have on occasion been succesful in solving conundrums that seem to have stumped forum experts by doing something that either was not suggested or one would not believe that doing it could alter the results. So with that in mind i am making a suggestion that falls into the latter category.I know that you have uninstalled and reinstalled the software for the digital camera with no change. i am going to suggest you do it again but ASSUMING that you have more than one physical (or at least partitioned virtual drives) this TIME redirect the new installation to another drive or partition. The normal default is to "C" program files. TRY that and let us know if it brings back your access to the device. As far as the flash drive i really have no new ideas to contribute on that one. This whole issue sounds very much like a conflict issue between some other HARDWARE to me. Good luck, truenorth

am running a win XP OS sp2.
my optical drive is an LG 52x maxI had a similar problem a while back. After removing my old drive, which oddly enough had that errie 'burned' smell to it, I replaced it with a cheap DVD drive from the local electronics store and I was good to go again.Sounds like it has finally bit the dust.

DVD burners which would be a good replacement are about 40 bucks @ newegg.com if you are in the States.by the way, tnx patio & redbull for quick replies.again dont know for what reason my cd rom drive is workable now.i just let my cd lens cleaner spin and spin and spin in the drive, then boot, reboot and reboot thats all and its worth it.now it shows in the device manager and the system information yields DATA in its value column.tnx again to both of you for the reaction.

Solve : Presario desktop - front usb's and card readers?

Answer»

Hi folks,

I have a COMPAQ Presario - Model SR1609UK. A couple of years old i think

It has the panel on the front with 3 usb's, 4 card readers and AUDIO points.

All of a sudden the usb's and card readers stopped working, the usb's at the back are fine though.

I've a bit of computing knowledge, but nothin too technical so here's what i've done so far.

- Tried numerous usb devices
- Checked the USB root hubs? they are al workin fine and unticked
- CHecked the drivers are loaded and updated
- Scratched my head and shouted alot
- Gave up shouting and had a beer

ok the last 2 were for my benefit not the computers but it helped a little anyway.

Any ideas anyone? Try and keep the technical jargon for the TECH heads cause it'll just go over mine.

Cheers guys
Yerpaw

Has the machine been moved or cleaned on the inside recently ? ?
There will be a small set of wires leading to that front panel header and connected to the motherboard. They MAY have come off.

You'll need to open the case to check this. As always when working inside the case remove all power and take anti-static precautions.

If you do not have the motherboard manual that shows how it's wired visit the manuf. website for a dloadable version of your owners manual.Ah cheers patio, i never even thought of that.
I've just re-arranged my office and moved it under my desk. bet thats it.

Yerpaw
You may get lucky...most newer MBoards actually label the connector ends of the wires...course i'm blind as a bat so that doesn't help me.

Yeah thought that would be too simple.

All CONNECTIONS are in place and solid

NEXT lol

YerpawGo to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager...
Find all instances of USB roots and hubs...
Right click each one and select Remove...
You will get a warning...ignore it.
Shut down and re-boot ...Windows will automatically re-install them.

Solve : Laptop advice?

Answer»

Hi i am going to college in a few weeks and im lookin at gettin a laptop and i needed advice on WAT i should get. I play lots of games on my computer but i also need it to be ABLE to do all my scool work. I only have about $900 to spend im worried that im gonna end up with a laptop that cant do wat i want it 2.

Just to give u an idea i need the computer to be able to handel games such as WoW,Oblivion,Battlefield, ect. And im not lookin for the ULTIMATE gaming machine im just looking for something that wont have problems with these types of games.

Thx for taking the time to read this and for any helpI can't tell you about the gaming aspect of it; I think Calum or some of the other forum MEMBERS can give some advice on that.

But, just wanted to mention that if you'll be needing Microsoft Office, check your college bookstore. Microsoft, Adobe, and other software makers offer huge discounts to students. So, look for academically priced software in the bookstore.

I'll help out, but not tonight, I have my own problems to deal with.
Be back tomorrow, and I'll give you some advice if someone else hasn't done so already.
In the MEANTIME, consider these factors.
Battery life: how much do you need?
Portability: size/weight, how big or heavy is the max for you?
Screen size/resolution: 15.4" is a standard widescreen, and is a good balance between size and components that can be fitted in. 17" or larger is for very powerful, but heavy, laptops, and pushes the price up. The resolution will also be very important, consider it carefully.
Glossy/non-glossy: Glossy screens give more vibrant colours, but also more glare under bright lights. Choose the right type for your environment.

soybean's advice is very good, there are a lot of discounts available for students, even on Windows. See what you can get.OK GOIN off to college eh? well heres advice GET THE BEST DANG VIRUS PROTECTION U CAN AFFORD CUS WHEN THE NERDS STARTED SENDING VIRUSES AROUND IN THE SCHOOL and it happens in every one..... i caught who it was and they got banned from the college and the communityOK, here's my recommendation.
Core 2 Duo CPU, 1Gb of RAM for XP, 2Gb for Vista, 7200rpm HDD of whatever size you need, and a 7600-class or better graphics card.
All that can fit in a 15.4" laptop, so it's still fairly mobile, and will add up to a nice powerful package that will give you what you want.
Whether that will come under your budget, I don't know.
I'm not too up on US pricing, but I will look around a bit for you.Just looked at some of the offerings from Newegg.com in the $750-$1,000 price range. I saw none with a 7200 rpm HD. I thinks he's just not going to find something with the desired specs, with a $900 budget.

How about this? You're going college. So, forget the computer games and concentrate on learning. Well, the 7200rpm drive isn't that important, out of those it's the first thing to drop if it doesn't fit in the budget.
It's very nice to have, but not totally necessary.
watercooler400: you may find the above advice, "How about this? You're going college. So, forget the computer games and concentrate on learning" to be the right thing to do.
I have been looking around, and I doubt you will find a laptop with good graphics for $900.
My advice is to drop the gaming capabilities, but still spend $900. Then you can get a powerful laptop with good battery life and the software you need. Most of the Pubs on Campus should have video games...or take up Pool.i got my laptop for 900. dell inspiron b130 just get the upgraded cpu and you should be fine.. when i tried to install wow that was my only problem

Solve : Monitor not recognized?

Answer»

I recently got an HP Pavilion 533w pc. When I plugged it up to my monitor and keyboard and turned it on this is what happened: the system sounds like it is booting up, it lights up the keyboard in the regular test PATTERN, the lights on the pc show that it first checks the cd drive then the floppy drive, but the monitor still shows a “Self Test” box that reads: “This monitor is working. Please check the video CABLE and computer.” Both the keyboard and the monitor work fine on ANOTHER pc that I have. And, of course, I did check to MAKE sure everything is plugged in tight and correctly. It doesn’t appear to have a separate video card, it looks like the monitor plugs directly into the motherboard. The only other separate card in there is a modem. Based on this information, can anyone give me an idea of what to check or replace next?Did you recieve a driver CD with the machine ? ?
If so you could try re-installing the motherboard drivers...I didn't get any SOFTWARE with this computer. However, I do have a bootable copy of Windows XP Pro with a key. I tried to boot up to it in the cd drive and nothing changed.
Visit HP's site for the correct drivers...

Solve : Powercolor X1950 Pro Windows XP Boot problems?

Answer»

Hi all, I'm new here

Just wondering whether anyone can help me out as it seems there is more troubleshooting information on public forums then I can get from ATI support at the moment

I just bought a brand new X1950 pro to replace my X800 GTO graphics card. However, I'm having an increasingly common problem in regards to booting windows.

Details of the problem:
1) Windows refuses to boot with installed hardware
- It crashes on the black screen with blue bar - blue bar freezes
- Attempted numerous reboots, no solution
2) Attempted install on safe mode
- Setup informed me that it could not find capatible hardware for install (WTH???)
- Installed it successfully using Window's normal setup options
3) Windows XP still wont boot
4) Attempted VGA mode - same hang
4) Reinstalled X800 - works
5) Downloaded latest video drivers from ATI site, latest windows updates, latest CHIPSET drivers from VIA (v512 now)
- Uninstalled X800 drivers using add/remove and driver cleaner pro
6) Reinstalled X1950 - still wont work
7) Went to safe mode, and attempted the following
- Set hardware acceleration to none, disabled write combining
- Went to BIOS and disabled all AGP fastwrites, etc
- Disabled sound card (another bloke with the same problem said it fixed his)
- Went on msconfig and selected diagnostic startup
- Attempted to install the latest drivers using ATI setup - same MESSAGE as it was on the CD

None of which helped

Here's my software specs:
- Windows XP SP2

And my system specs:
- VIA K7 Motherboard
- AMD Athlon XP 2000+ 1.6 GHZ PROCESSOR
- 1GB DDR RAM
- 8 GB Hard Drive
- SB Live! Sound card
- ATI Radeon X800 (Since X1950 aint working)

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks I'm looking at this powercolor x1950 ............<< nice card*
*certain cards have different hardware specs (requirements) *

Do you have at least a 450 watt rated power supply ?It's 500 Watts, brand new for this card

P.S. Yes everyone said that it was a nice card so I bought it before going to a search engine and typing 'ati radeon x1950 windows xp boot lockup hang troubleshooting' lol
Because then I would have backed off a bit and spent it on an Nvidia Geforce 7950GT... regrets...

It's all over the forums, similar but rather common problems, but some at least managed to get into windows first heh - THANKFULLY I know there's some hope as some people managed to get it to work sweetly

Hummmm, I read quite a bit on this card and reviews ...... if you have decent air flow and "no" heat issues I am not sure on a remedy here......

just a thought...... on your 1 gig of ram < is this dual channel (2 sticks) or one stick ?

if dual, might take out the 2nd stick and just see if that allows windows to boot up ........

there are some more experienced members who should be online shortly.... It's dual, 512 + 512 DDR, and yup I've tried that too heh
Even tried plugging the power cables into different slots - as many combinations I can think of before I plugged it back normally heh

Even tried changing the PCI slots for other devices then taking them out, putting it back in... *censored* the weekend drove me insane

In the end the problem keeps HAPPENING. It seems more like a driver issue windows seems to be having. But I dunno - most people at least managed to get into windowsI would consider returning it for a replacement....it should be recognised in safemode. That's pretty much the only option left it seems... swap it with the more stable 7950GT and pay the price difference

*sighs* I really wanted this thing to work

Solve : Dell Inspirion Laptop shows empty CDs as full and will not write to them?

Answer»

Hi,

Our laptop will read and play CDs but when you try to write or copy to them it says to Insert new disc then it will not accept any disc. I have UPDATED the drivers and don;t know what else to do. We use Windows ME edition.

Thanks,

KevinWhat burner PROGRAM are you using?
When did this problem start?
What is the make and model of the laptop and burner? The laptop is about 7 years old...It has been sitting on a shelf for a few years. I am not sure about the burner, we just tried to save to the DRIVE and it would not work.I can't help you if you don't give me any information.

Have I understood you right that you are trying to burn data to a cd but it wont let you?
What program are you using when you try to burn?
Wat is the make and model of the laptop?

What drive are you trying to save?OK...The computer is a Dell Inspirion 4000. I am trying to save to the D: drive which is the CD drive. I have tried to save pictures from my pictures and data from Excel but end up with the same results. I don't know what burner, if any, is already on the computer. I tried to install a new burner I downloaded for free but it would not run.Quote from: RMPKBW1 on August 06, 2007, 12:29:00 AM

The laptop is about 7 years old...

This may sound silly, but out of curiosity I have to ask - is it possible that the drive is a read-only drive?

Everest free software might id it.

Agreed.
And to straighten out the terminology a burner is the physical drive
Burning software is NEEDED to run the drive.
Copying would be burning in this CASE...

Solve : Comp shuts down randomly and doesnt start up straight away?

Answer»

hi, ever since i got my new 400w POWER supply for my comp, it started to randomly shutdown quite frequently.. usually when im playing games such as cs and wc3 (i used to have a 350w power supply, but i dont think that makes a difference). i have also formatted my computer so the hard drive space is all free again. when the comp shuts down, EVERYTHING just turns off (including all the fans and power supply and you can start it up again, you would have to wait around 10 mins before it can successfully start up)

cpu: p4 intel 3ghz
ram: 1gb

if anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated!
i have a feeling that its the hard drive acting up, but im not sure
thanks in advanceSounds like more of a hardware issue than a virus issue. I'm moving this to the appropriate section.

What brand/model is this new power supply? How much money did you spend on it?
What was wrong with the old power supply that made you replace it?the brand of the power supply is: Genius
i spent around $40 NZD on it
the old power supply suddenly became very loud (due to heavy dust loads), and i mean very loud. cleaning the dust inside wouldn't help, so i got a new one.

i hope this helpsGenius may not have been a smart move...i could find no info on the manuf. which means it is a re-labeled generic PSU.Genius appears to "make" all sorts of hardware, but I also can't find any actual information on them. No site, no reviews...nothing. It's usually a bad sign when you can't find any information about a manufacturer. I think you may have been sold a substandard power supply. If you can get your money back, you should do so immediately and get a good-quality brand. Newegg is a great place to LOOK for information, PRICES, and reviews.so the PSU is most likely to be the problem with the random shut down of the computer? It's hard to say for sure, but I'd say it's the primary suspect. You might want to see if you can borrow a friend's PSU, just to make sure.I have a Genius mouse. It's OK but it doesn't make me want to buy one of their power supplies.

Sounds a bit like the old PSU was a bit of a champ, still providing stable power even though it was full of dust, and the new one is a Chinese el-cheapo lightweight model. (Weight does count. the more the better)

Edit -- I just converted 40 NZ dollars to UK pounds, it comes out as 15.20 UKP!!!! (About 30 US dollars)

Man, that is WAY too cheap!!!

A good PSU is going to cost you at least twice that. (at LEAST) It will have a name like Enermax, Antec, Coolermaster, etc.

Can you get your money back?
no i cant get my money back
but yeah im gonna see if switching the PSU would fix the problem

Cheers for the help
i'll let ya know if it works out We'll leave the light on for you!hey i have the same problem, and ihave two supply power. one is antec the other one is orginal(no brand). the 1 im using right now is 430 watt and its doing just fine..

Solve : XFX 8400GS HELP?

Answer»

Dear Users
on compairing this VGA 8400GS with Intel MEDIA Accelerator X3000 Which is better and XFX 8400 GS model says that it has 256MB Memory supporting 512MB so how it will support 512MB memory The 8400GS is a much better card for gaming.
And the memory part means it has 256Mb of RAM onboard, and can take a further 256Mb RAM from the SYSTEM to get a total of 512Mb, 256 of its own and 256 from the main system RAM.
Does that help?

Solve : Computer Temp Problems, Restarting, and Gaming.?

Answer»

Hey everyone, I'm not sure but I have a feeling there is a problem with my computer temperatures.

Motherboard 47 C/118 F

CPU 49C 118 F

Driver 1 46 C 115 F

Driver 2 41 C 106 F

Also it gets worse as I am gaming, and I believe temps raise. Usually when I exit a game my computer will just freeze up after playing it for a CERTAIN amount of time.Welcome to the forums igotaproblem.
That doesn't look too bad to me, but we need some more info.
What CPU do you have?
What graphics card?
Can you get a temp. reading for your graphics card?
Where are these temperatures reported?
Is that idle or load temperatures?
Try and get some readings just after the computer is BOOTED for the first time, and just after or during playing a game.
Also, try and get temperature readings from different programs - maybe from the BIOS, EVEREST Home and Speedfan.

Solve : monitor goes black several times/day?

Answer»

My monitor screen goes black (perhaps the monitor turns off like in screen savor mode). I can turn it back on by doing this: pushing the off BUTTON, waiting about 5 to 7 seconds, and pushing the on button. It does this about 5 to 10 times/day, and is getting more frequent from a month ago when it was 1 or 2 times/day. My monitor is a Dell refurbished 19 in flat panel, about 4 years old. My OS is Windows XP and the computer is a Dell Dimension 4600 series, 2.4 GH, 1024MB Ram.The only 2 things it could be are the monitor itself or the vid card/onboard video....
Try the monitor on another machine to see if it's the culprit.
And to test your video try a different known working monitor on your machine to see if the vid card is the culprit...I'm not sure what kind of lifespan LCD's have, but it MAY be going south. First of all, you should make sure the cables are properly seated. Turn the computer off, disconnect the cables, wait a minute, and reconnect them securely.

The fact that turning off the monitor fixes it makes me think it has to be purely a hardware issue, probably electrical. There's a good chance it's not getting the proper power. I have a feeling this monitor is going to bail out on you soon. You can either take it in to get it fixed or replace it. I'd replace it.

It's possible that the video card is to BLAME, but I'd bet on it being the monitor. You should, of course, test out a different monitor first just to verify this.I had this exact same problem and my graphics card was wrecked. To be 100% sure take out your graphics card and turn the computer on and see if the monitor turns of, if not then its your card, and also put your card into another computer and see if it happens then.
What i did was when i had the same problem, i took my card out and put it in my friends computer, and the same *censored* STARTED happening to his computer. If you don't have another computer to check your graphics card on, just take the card out and turn on the computer and the computer should work with its onboard card.

YOUR CARD IS PROBABLY BUSTED Alex if they remove the video card of course the monitor is going to be off...It wont be off if its got an onboard card.
Kermir should check if his graphics card works on another computer, thats what i did and same thing happened. Before going to a HECK of lot of trouble, be sure to check and/or reset the power and screen saver option.

Solve : sticky mouse icon?

Answer»

my mouse arrow sticks when i leave it idle for more than a second or two, then it sticks for up to 6 or 7 seconds before it lets GO and i can use it. i can move the mouse during this time and get no movement from the mouse arrow at all. If i keep the mouse moving it WONT stick, just when it stops for a second or two. any ideas? What happened before this started?
What make/model is the PC and mouse?
And does this happen with another mouse, or the same mouse on a different PC?A theory is that you have a WIRELESS mouse that is enabling its STANDBY mode after two seconds. It is not correctly re-enabling during normal activity. I'd say a weak signal, low battery, outdated / incompatible drivers are the primary factors, if indeed it is a wireless mouse, if not - sorry I can't help. Check to see what apps are running in background and eating up your CPU cycles. Might be a good time for a thorough malware scan.

it's a HP..with winxpReboot to that menu by tapping F8 REPEATEDLY before the Windows screen starts loading...CHOOSE "last known good configuration" and see if this gets you back in.thanx 4 replying so soon. i did try that and it just keeps going back to the same menu. i heard there's a battery in the back of the hard drive that can be taken out and restarts the computer. but i don't know if it will wipe everything.. do you know about it??
There is no battery in a hard drive...and that's the CMOS battery SOMEONE told you about which is probably not the problem right now.

Solve : 2nd HDD - Aaaaarrrghhh!!!!?

Answer»

Arrrrgghh!!!

I recently aquired a second SATA HDD & installed it but I can't seem to use it!?

It's recognised in my BIOS & in DEVICE manager in Windows, but there's no icon in 'my computer' for the 2nd drive.

Can anyone tell me what I'm supposed to be doing???

THANKS...You need to format it before you can use it.
You didn't mention what version of Windows you're using so I'm assuming XP.

Select Control Panel and find administrative tools
Select Computer management
Select Disk Management
There should be a disk with only unallocated space.
(like the BOTTOM drive in this pic)

RIGHT click the unallocated space, select format and press ok.

The questions are:
In 1. Please give details of the hdd manufacturer/model, partitioning and file system.
In 2. Please give details of the desktop, manufacturer (if known), operating system, hardware.

Which version of MS_Dos do you intend installing in your laptop hdd bearing in mind that if your desktop is running XP true MS-Dos does not exist.

Do you have access to any installed MS-Dos version on cd (I assume your laptop and desktop both have cdrom or cdrw.)

hello dusty,
1) laptop hdd 12gb IBM-DARA 212000, I have partitioned it into two partitions FAT32 system
2) desktop: 7yrs old machine with celeron 333, winxp professional, has CD rom

well the thing is my laptop floppy drive and dvd/cd drive are erratic and as good as non functional. my laptop crashed. i took out the laptop hdd and formated it by attaching it to my desktop via IDE to USB adapter.
i have copied winxp cd files on one partition of laptop hdd. now i want to put back the hard disk in laptop and BOOT MY LAPTOP FROM THE HDD, after which i will run setup exe in dos from the other partition. i have done this before, but someone made my laptop HDD bootable. for last few days i have searched extensively, but didnt COME across any thing simple to run. as i am not a computer professional so writing scripts is difficult.Hello Anil.

You sure are asking for the just-about-impossible. If you had a working floppy drive on either machine it would be a piece of cake to get going with Dos on your laptop hdd, without one and without access to a cdrom on your laptop - wow what a challenge.

Is it not possible for you to get access to yet another pc with a floppy, do none of your friends have an elderly pc they'd let you use for just an hour or so? And yet another QUESTION, is it not possible for you to replace the floppy and cdrom on your laptop? Parts are available.

Anyway, I can tell you that XP Setup will not run in any Dos environment, if you are eventually able to install Dos on your hdd you must use WINNT.EXE

The instructions from the XP Startup disk are "Make a folder on your hard drive named XP and then copy the contents of the I386 folder from the cd to it first. Then navigate to that folder and type WINNT.EXE"

However - here is a long shot which might work for you but I doubt it. Install XP on your laptop hdd while it is fitted in the desktop. You might get lucky!! I suggest you disconnect all other hard drives in the desktop while you do this. Yes, I know XP will probably install incorrect hardware drivers for your laptop, as I said it's a long shot.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.Quote

WINNT.EXE is a DOS executable. Some people say that the DOS autoexec.bat needs a line to load Smartdrv , but I managed without that.

Thanks for your INPUT Contrex. AGREE with you. I put in the quoted lines as the OP indicated a wish to boot to Dos and run Setup.exe which, in my experience, is not possible.

I've puzzled long and large as to how a bootable OS could be installed on the laptop hdd using just the hardware available but it's beyond me. Without a floppy or cd writer it seems an impossible dream. Any solution from your end?

Regards

Another option. This one lets you hook up the drive to any IDE CONNECTOR. But the only OS this may work with that's not driver dependent may be Win98 or DOS 6.2...

Even then your still going to be in a pickle without a CDRom drive to install XP and the drivers needed...

Solve : Image a drive, then strangeness?

Answer»

Thanks in advance for your help. I have 98SE running on a P3. Two hard drives installed (10G and 6G). 10G is set as primary master, 6G as primary slave. Rebuilt the 10G (FDISK,FORMAT,RELOAD) and it reboots fine as C: drive. I reformatted the 6G and used XXCOPY to create an image of the C: drive onto the D: drive. REMOVE power from the 10G and boot on the newly built 6G, which is now BOOTING as C: and all is fine. Reapply power to the 10g, and it boots to C: and I can see D: is a good copy. HOWEVER, if I unplug the 6G and try to boot on the 10G, which is where I started with a perfectly good disk, it no longer boots?? Reapply power to both, boot, and it comes up fine? I'm very confused.

Can it be POSSIBLE i UPDATE my Toshiba Satellite 1800 laptop BIOS.Please suggest a solution on how to do it.Why do you need to update the BIOS ?i need to update it because i think it will help IMPROVE my laptop performance.and in run compile java codes on the laptop.
It won't do either of these things...matter of fact you are likely to create a doorstop with the wrong flash...Yeah BIOS updates are usually issued for FIXING problems, so if you're not experiencing any problems there aren't much point in updating it.

But if really want to UPGRADE it you'll need to find instructions (and a BIOS upgrade) from Toshiba since the procedure can vary.

Does that make any sense?

If thats the video card you bought if you click on the link below you can DLoad a PDF MANUAL that will tell exactly what type of monitors/TV's the card supports...

So you'll need the Samsung Model # after all.

Im struggling to find the PDF on the site! Can you point me in the right direction?

Solve : speeds on network cards?

Answer»

does having better speeds on NETWORK cards mean the internet connection will be faster.
for example a card with speeds such as this -Full duplex speeds 20 Mbps, 200 Mbps, 2000 Mbps- will it PROVIDE quicker internet connection and download speeds that a card with speeds such as this- 10/100/1000.

thanks for your help.
No. Almost all network cards are faster than any common internet connection, therefore a faster card will not help that. A faster card will peform faster on the internal network (LAN).Network Cards are typically AVAILABLE in 10/100/1000 Mbit/s(Mbit/s). This means they can support a transfer rate of 10 or 100 or 1000 Megabits per second. If the card maximum speed is faster than your internet connection speed, you are OK, the card will be able to keep up.

My CABLE company here in Gt Britain has just started rolling out a 20 Mbit/sec cable service, £37 ($74 US) per month, and they have had to advise a large number of customers to discard their OLDER 10 Mbit/sec network cards, which many of them have had on lower speeds for 7 years or more.

okay thanks a lot guys.

Solve : HELP!!!!!!!!?

Answer» Hi, I have had my COMPUTER for a while, with no problems. Today I tryed to install a game called the Sims for my daughter. When I put the cd in to install it started, but at 6% it said, A problem occured when trying to TRANSFER the FILE 'TSData\Res\Sound\Voice1.package' from the media. What does that mean, and how do i fix it. Does anyone know???Thank You.What version of WINDOWS do you have?
And is this The Sims or The Sims 2?

As this seems to be a common problem with The Sims 2, I'm going to assume that's the version you're trying to install. A lot of people get stuck at this part of the installation, which makes it sound like a problem with the game itself, but most people solve the problem by properly cleaning the CD. You should go ahead and give that a try. If that doesn't WORK, perhaps this thread would be helpful...

Solve : Replacing motherboard?

Answer»

When upgrading a PC with a new MB and video card, I was told by a national big box retailer that I must rebuild the HDD by reformatting it and re-installing the OS at a COST of ~$600. I will be using the same processor on the new MB, from the same manufacturer as I currently have. Is that rebuild really necessary? Or can I just SWAP the board, add the video card and boot up?

The video card will replace the integrated video that I currently have on the old MB.

Thanks for any help,
jDepends on the OS...if it's XP you have 2 choices.

1) Prepare beforehand and use the below METHOD :

Method One

Or
2) After the swap
Repair Install of XP.

In either case i suggest reading up on the material to become familiar with the process and printing out a copy for REFERENCE...

Good Luck and congrats on your new beast.

p.s. I wish i could make 600 that easy ! !Whew!, I'd avoid that national big box retailer. $600 is just absurd for what they were proposing. $600 for reformatting?!
That takes just a hour maybe 2.

so when this card shares memory from the system then the TOTAL memory of the system should become 768 Mb instead of 1GB DDRII but the system is still showing 1GB ram and the card is ALSO showing that is has SHARED the memory so is it ok or not ??Yes, EVERYTHING is fine. The memory isn't allocated (taken away from the system memory), but is shared which means that it takes it as needed.

EDIT: Oh, and as far as i know, 8400GS doesn't support VIVO.

I tried many hints (Waste Ink reset, printer reset, changing cartridges, BIOS SETTINGS) but no one helps.
Printer turns on with Power button on it, and the LED showing everything is OK, but when I want to print something, it displaying me the tray icon in taskbar, and displaying the bits sending, everything goes out OK, but printer does not print ANYTHING!

Any usefull idea, or whatever else what helps me from that c**p situation?

(Sorry for my English )Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall the software
that came with the printer?Yea, of course, I´ve tried that, but nothing. I aslo tried to instal Windows XP drivers and original canon drivers, but nothing changed.
Printer doe not print anything Does the printer respond at all when you try to print something?Do you get any error messages / does the paper feed thru / tried setting it up on another computer / or is it just not responding with anything?

Alan <>< Thank GUYS for quick replies!

No printer has not responding at all. When I turn it on with Power on it, it will initialize and goes to ready mode, but when I want to print something it doe not do anything, windows showing the printing process, but does not do anything.
No error messages in OS, no error messages from printer (by LED or beeps).

Printer acts like "everything is OK" and windows also, but it does not print anything.

In SERVICE mode of printer I tried to print status TEXT and seems like this:

1. Printer Control Mode: BJ
2. Paper selection: LTR
3. Print mode: High Quality
4. Smoothing: Disabled
5. Reduction: 1/1 (Disabled)
6. Automatic power on: Disabled
7. Automatic power off: Disabled
8. Font: Courier
9. Code Page: 437
10. Page Length: 11inch
11. Character Set: SET1
12. Text Scale: Disabled
13. Download buffer: Disabled
14. Receive buffer size: 40KB
15. Automatic line feed: CR=CR
16. Automatic carriage return: LF=LF
17. Alternate graphics mode: Disabled
18. International character set: -
19. Installed cartridge type: black BJ cartridge
20. Printer Preset status: USA-BJ

I also downloaded BJ setup, utility program which runs just in DOS mode for adjusting these (up-written) settings. But when I press "Send data to printer" it seems to send it OK, but when I print again the status text, nothing changed. Is this a parallel printer? Has it worked with this computer in the past? Does Device Manager show LPT1 port as working properly? What BIOS settings did you experiment with? Can you try this printer on another computer? Yes, this is the paralell printer, LPT1 is showing in Device Manager, in the past the printer worked fine with my computer (Windows XP), now it does not work just only on my PC, but does not work also on friends notebook, and in the past it worked fine also on notebook.
I experiment with paralell port settings (ECP, EPP, ECP+EPP, Normal), but my endurance overrun and I loaded the Default BIOS settings. I do not believe it is in BIOS.

Thank for all your replies! I appreciate your help!If you haven't searched Canon's website for info, here's a starting point for the BJC 250: Consumer Products Home :: Support :: BJC-250 Series

The page has a LINK to their Knowledge Base or to send an email inquiry:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=SupportMailWSSSAct&fcategoryid=230&modelid=6729

Other than that, I don't know what to suggest. I think your printer may be faulty and you may have to replace it.

Solve : Dell Vostro 1400 vs HP dv2000t?

Answer»

So I need a laptop for dental school next year and I'm debating between these two. Reviews can be found at www.notebookreview.com

I like things about both, but I'll give a run down of what I'm looking for and what I like about each.

I already have a pretty decent desktop, even though it is 3-4 years old, it's still a solid desktop. So this laptop is more for use in class to take notes, surf, view slides, some word processessing, pretty much basic windows stuff + act as storage. Maybe the occassional movie. I will be carrying it AROUND often, and I think these two are about the right sizes I'd GO for without it being too expensive.

Dell Vostro 1400
Core™ 2 Duo T5470, Vista Home Basic, 1 gig RAM, 160gig HDD, 8x DVD+R dual layer Burner, Intel® Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Wi-Fi Mini Card, 9 cell battery
- the advertised alloy shell, spill proof keyboard, and shock resistant hdd are all very tempting, but are they for real?
- the price of this one ($781 after tax) is very attractive compared to the HP (~ $970)

HP dv2000t
dual core processor T2130, Vista Home Basic, 1gig RAM, Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 950, Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection, 120gig HDD, Litescribe and 8X DVD+/-RW Burner, high capacity 6 cell battery
- much more aesthetically pleasing to the eye than the HP
- i know a lot more people who own HP's out there, so i'm guessing it's a good choice?
- better looking display, or so i've heard from people

Overall, they're somewhat similar in build, but I guess I'm just not sure which company is better at the moment. Do the Dell bonuses make up for the supposed SHORTCOMINGS I've heard about the Vostro? (ie: the display not being the best, dell's tech support isn't the best, minor light leakage?) Is the, almost $200 extra worth it for HP, the prettier and better looking model? The Dell is also more powerful, has a newer graphics card, and has a bigger HDD and larger battery.
I'd say get the Dell, unless you're really bothered about the looks of the HP.I've got a Dell laptop, not the Vostro but an Inspiron and I think Dell makes some very nice stuff. I've NEVER had an HP laptop so I couldn't compare them, but Dell's customer service is great. I've never had a problem with it. I'd have to go with CALUM on this one. The Dell sounds better in my opinion. does anyone actually own either of these two laptops? No, not personally, but the reviews at NBR will tell you a lot, you said you read them?
I find their reviews are very accurate and give good info.
Besides, looking at the specs and what you've said, the Dell is very much the better option.Hey that hurts my feelings =) My customer service is great!! Anyway, personally azmidude, I also suggest the Vostro, and not just because I work for them. From messing with those systems they seem pretty darn durable and reliable. Plus a lot of the bad customer service stuff that I've heard unfortunately comes from the "consumer" side that ends up being transferred to India or the Phillipines. It's unfortunate because those guys know what they're doing, just people complain too much about not talking to an "American" But if you sometimes feel the same way, just purchase the system under a small business account and you'll have support in the US.

Solve : Power light flashes?

Answer»

My HP Pavillion a400n power light flashes but computer will not power up or boot. Is it possible that I got a virus? I had Norton installed on it and the other computer which s hooked up to it via WIRELESS is still working with no problems. If it won't power up at all its definitely not a virus but a hardware issue. What happens when you press the power button? Does it make any noises like fans or harddrives spinning up or is it just dead?I would recommend checking and testing the Power Supply Unit,
take the cover of try and boot check out any fans see if they just twitch, check out the exhaust fan from the PSU see if it actually works,

if a replacement PSU is required, measure the dimensions of the one installed, as sometimes in HP, Compaq and Dell they are smaller than a standard unit and may require ordering in.I had a very similar problem just the other day at work I had a Dell Optiplex that wouldn't boot up instead the power button just had an amber light flashing, so I contacted Dell SUPPORT and they told me my PSU fan wasn't working. (i'd already tested the PSU and the voltage was fine and the memory was fine) so I took it apart and opened up the PSU and checked the fan and it was working fine. So I got back on chat with Dell support and halfway through our conversation the computer just booted up all on it's own for some odd reason... it's been working fine ever since. I have no idea what was wrong with it or what fixed it, it just worked. lol so all that to SAY it sounds kinda like the problem I faced but I don't know how to fix it. I guess this was more of a sympathy post. lol Make sure the PSU is working properly and the memory is seated well.Quote from: Deerpark on July 19, 2007, 03:49:32 PM

Nothing, it's dead but the power button flashes. I also switched batteries and that didn't help.I don't recommend anyone taking a PSU apart...what batteries did you replace ? ?

Borrow a known working PSU and swap it in there to see if THINGS improve.

Solve : Help with computer on my television?

Answer»

I have my computer hooked up to my 32 in. Olevia 232T (which is the Target brand model for 232V). My computer has DVI and my tv has HDMI, so I bought a DVI to HDMI cable and hooked them up. The problem I face is that whenever I turn my computer on first, and then I turn my tv on, I get "No Signal" in the lower left until I unhook either the HDMI or DVI PORT and then plug it back in. However, if I turn the tv on first, the computer shows up right away. I called Olevia and they didnt help at all. They said it was some sort of syncing problem and that is it, they couldnt suggest anything. I just want to know how to display my computer without worry which to turn on first.

Oh....and this also applies to the screen saver. If my computer screensaver is on and then I turn on the tv and move the mouse, it shows up, however, if the screensaver is on and I move the mouse and THEN turn the tv on, it doesnt show up.

I'm sorry If I made this very CONFUSING. I REALLY appreciate the help!!!!!!HELP! I am STILL having this problem!!! I would really appreciate a response, thanks.Did you even have to install a extra driver or does it work true the Video card?
Which OS are you using?

Jonas BTW: I believe the TV is the problem not the computer.
did you have any other hardware attached?
Like a DVD-player or something.

Jonas "Did you even have to install a extra driver or does it work true the Video card?
Which OS are you using?"

- Nope, I just plugged it in and it started working. I am using WINDOWS XP Media Center

"did you have any other hardware attached?

- Yes, I have an Xbox 360 and a Wii both attached and working correctly, it only does this for the computerQuote from: Groovy_Duck on August 07, 2007, 05:45:26 PM

Solve : Strange Behavior when POSTing or Rebooting?

Answer»

Hello everyone. I have a strange problem and am wondering what you guys think of it, since I only know enough about computers to cause myself problems.

I have an AMD Athalon 3200+ on a Gigabyte board, 3 gigs of ram, which is new (Newegg), a decent graphics card, 2 wester digital hardrives, on a striped raid setup, and only one problem:

Whenever my computer restarts, or reboots, or even is just turned off, it won't turn on again. The lights come on, the discs turn (you can hear them inside) and the lights go on the dvd drives as they're checked, but the computer doesn't POST. It doesn't cause an error beep either. The screen just tells me that there is no longer a signal and the computer just sits there. The lights are on, but nothing is home.

The only solution so far is to turn it off (by holding the power button for five seconds or so) and then letting it sit there for about 1/2 an hour or so. Then, when I turn it back on, it POSTs NORMALY and runs fine. Without this period of rest or whatever, it just won't rePOST. And it doesn't give me an error, it's just like it doesn't do it. And the computer isn't hot at all. It's running very cool, as a matter of fact. I think this began over a year ago when I was checking out my board's dual BIOS feature, and I think I addes some electrical safety feature, but I've checked and I don't see this feature anymore, and the safety features that are there are off. Like I said, I just thought of that a year after the fact, so my memory is fuzzy. I set the BIOS to default long ago, with no effect.

So, has anyone heard of anything like this before? No error, just a computer that won't reboot without a waiting period? Even if I hit the Reset button while Windows is starting. Just won't start without a rest. Very annoying, actually. What kind of BIOS? CMOS?Yeah, I'm sorry, my question isn't very informative or helpful. I'm posting from work and typing with what I remember off the top of my head. It's a GIGABYTE GA-7N400 PRO2 Socket A (Socket 462) NVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400 ATX AMD motherboard, if that helps at all (thank god for Newegg Invoice History so I could look it up).

Once again, sorry for the lack of more information, or more CLEAR information. I can't use my computer at hom right now so am doing this from memory at work. The reason I'm posting is because I'm fixing a hardrive issue right now (on the computer) and repairing my Windows XP Pro (bad SECTORS, damaged boot.ini) and the failure to reboot the computer has is REALLY slowing me down, as you can imagine. I know how to fix the harddrive issue, but the OLD issue with my computer having to pause before starting up again is making a simple matter a complicated one.

Thanks for any help or advise, and I apologize again for the lack of more information.Have you tried flashing your BIOS? Try pulling the battery and then removing your shirt- that LAST part was a joke, you should probably wear clothing when working on computers. Leave it out for, oh, an hour at most. This should make your BIOS reset- otherwise you may have to resort to jumping it and that can be dangerous, as anyone who has ever been in a fight with a computer can tell you.DLoad and run the HDD diagnostics on that drive to see if it is failing...
Other than that this sounds like a heat/PSU issue...Thank you both very much. When I get my other issue corrected I'll try both of those.

And, yeah, I was suspecting a Power Supply issue, but I didn't want to since it was a Thermaltake, with a good fan, 400+ watt, fairly newish, and I thought that over 400 watts really should be enough, but you never can tell.

Thanks again guys.Even Thermaltakes fail ...they are one of the better brands though.
Swap in a known working one of the same wattage or GREATER to test this...

Solve : Refusing to boot?

Answer»

My wife has an HP box that was running an Athlon XP 1.4 ghz, with a video card upgrade and 512 MB RAM. One day we booted it up and it was running slow. Real slow. 15 minutes on the splash screen slow. I rebooted a few times, but nothing. OK. I pop it open, make sure everything is connected properly. It is. I pull the CPU. When I take off the HS it takes a chunk of Athlon with it. Huh. I get a new CPU off ebay, that's $35, nothing major. Pop it in. Boot up and... nothing. The keyboard flashes once, then is unresponsive, the display doesn't even attempt to light up, in either graphics port. I look at the back. The PSU's fan isn't spinning, nor is the case fan- however the CPU fan is. Any ideas as to how I can bring back this big bad mammer-jammer? Oh, and the hard drive spins too. In fact, all of the drives respond. I don't think it's even hitting POST. Do you think it's the PSU or the MoBo? Or am I just too damaged in the head to operate small machinery? The easiest diagnosis at this point would be to borrow a known working PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there to see if it is the culprit...

If you do replace it DON'T BUY a twenty dollar one...I have another HP box- actually the case style is identical, the only difference would be that everything inside is older . I think it's got a P3, I'm not sure how much the variance is between early 2000's factory HP power supplies. The biggest problem I'm looking at is that I've never replaced a PSU before. Actually, that's the SECOND biggest problem. The biggest would be the thunderstorm outside...Ok, 35 minutes and one over-sized PSU later... Nothing. At least now the PSU fan kicks in along with the processor. I found an old PSU in my old P3 450 box, but the thing is so big, the HP's CDRW & DVD don't go all the way into the case anymore. Not that aesthetics matter when the son-of-a-hamster won't boot. It's only pushing 50 more watts. I'm not very good at diagnosing hardware problems.

I hear the usual boot up whirs and clicks- no beeps. All the drives do their thing. The keyboard flashes at boot. After about 15 seconds it just makes an idle background whirring. The monitor displays it's usual "plug-me-into-something-I've-been-sitting-on-this-desk-for-a-year-and-a-half-and-I'm-bored"
message. Would it work better outside in the rain, perhaps? Seriously, though, I need this box up and running. My wife can't play her Sims (it crashes on my computer every 3 minutes- but it can play Half-Life 2, go figure?) and she reminds me of this fact every, oh, 5 clock cycles or so.Remove the video card and try it with the onboard video...Ok, tried it with onboard to no avail. Activity light is ACTIVE for the first 5 seconds or so then goes out. One of the fans is STILL not kicking in. Maybe an exorcism?A bench test would be better.

Remove all components from the case.
On a rubber mat or a piece of cardboard hook up only the following:
PSU
CPU
MBoard
Vid Card
1 stick of RAM
Mouse
Keyboard
Monitor.

Re-boot and see if it posts. If it does add only one component at a time to find the culprit.
Remember to take this opportunity to thoroughly clean out all components with a can of compressed air. Use a QTip to hold the fan blades in place when blasting them...Ugh, this'll be a fun one. Oh well, you wouldn't be a mod if you didn't have some idea of what to do. I'll be back later to describe it in all of it's gory detail. Hopefully it SURVIVES surgery... If it doesn't make POST I'm to assume it's the big one, right? That big Mobo heaven in the dumpst- er sky?

Solve : No Signal Monitor?

Answer»

Alright I have looked everywhere and my husband and I are pretty stumped.
The problem we are having is when we turn on the computer it does not show on the monitor says no signal. Tried hooking up to a new monitor same thing so we figured a video card. Tried that and still same result. He tried replacing the motherboard and processor and still no progress. We hooked up my monitor to his computer and it does work. So I am guessing its something to do with my desktop. Last possible thing I can think of is memory? ram?
Any ideas? What OS do you have?
Did you try using your cable at the other monitor?

Jonas I use just Windows Xp and it was a built computer have never had problems in the PAST till now. I tried the cables with the other computer and it works just fine on that one
So his monitor doesnt work on my computer nor does my monitor but my monitor works on his And you changed the video card?
Well that is strange. I would ask you to update the driver but that is a bit hard without screen.
Well I think you could try removing that last RAM you putted in but....

Jonas Still no luck with that. I gave that a shot and still does the same thing. LOL talk about frustrating but glad we have 2 computers. Still want to see what it is tho
Vonn~Try to remove any unneeded hardware.
And PUT them BACK one by one.

Jonas Well, if you replaced all of that hardware and there was no improvement, try swapping the HDD into you hubby's computer. If you get no monitor signal, congratulations. it's software... or not... If I'm right about that, try setting the drive as secondary or slave in his PC and repair install windows.

My bad- don't do this. I just got geek-served.Well that looks like a easier solution. (sounds but it isn't!)
But as you don't know what the problem is it could be software and it could be hardware.

Jonas I will give it a shot have to wait for him tho lol if i mess his stuff up he wont be HAPPY. Also I JUST put a new copy of windows on this so really hope thats not the problem, tho to my knowledge its the 3rd reinstall on this computer
Thank you all and we will see what happens.
One other thing, even with my computer turned on it doesnt show in his networkQuote from: Vonn on August 09, 2007, 11:16:11 AM

One other thing, even with my computer turned on it doesnt show in his network
Ok than the chances are big that it is the software.
So don't remove that hardware unless you want to spend all that time just for that little chance.

Jonas a other thing you could try is:
Boot the computer and wait for 3 min.
than press the |<- key twice and enter the PW of the first user.
->|
turn on the volume and listen if you hear the welcome sound.

Jonas That also depends on whether the network is wired or wireless. If it's wireless, odds are that every other boot the network will go down, or STOP recognizing a computer, or change it's own WEP key, or take down small aircraft, etc.Quote from: RavenousManChild on August 09, 2007, 11:00:06 AM

If I'm right about that, try setting the drive as secondary or slave in his PC and repair install windows.

This is really bad advice for a HDD that has XP on it.

It's not meant to be swapped around from one machine to another much less perform a repair install on a different machine...

Think before hitting the Post button. It did sound like there was something wrong with that info.
But my knowledge is to small to doubt others there solution.
So what would you suggest Patio?
