Solve : Computer interface with FAX????

Answer»

I hope I'm in the right forum for this, but I have been ASKED to hook a computer and fax machine up such that incoming faxes can be viewed on the computer and optionally PRINTED out. What do I need/need to do? I had never HEARD of this before.

This sort of sounds LIKE a network thing, but I am not sure. The central computer for the network is going to be a Windows desktop running XP Home.

Solve : Good video card??

Answer»

Also, on newegg I couldn't find the minimum PSU requirements. Do you happen to know what that is for the 8600?From a similar card: "375W PCI Express-compliant system power supply with a combined 12V current rating of 28A or more" for a system with a Core 2 Duo X6800.
Get at least a 400W, and if you're planning on lots of equipment like optical and hard drives get more, but 400 or 450W should be sufficient.
You may find this helpful.Thank Calum! That website was very helpful. I added that to my favorites. He has a 430W PSU already so that sounds like it should work fine until he upgrades it later on. Thanks!Yeah, it should be fine.
Glad to help, you're welcome as always. Now he's wanting to raise his budget up to $350. He asked me about this one.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=3098215&sku=V261-2900

I told him it looked way overpriced to me. I think that 8600 would outperform it. So I don't know. I mean, when you start spending that much on a video is it REALLY going to make that much of a difference? It's a nice card and more powerful than the 8600.
However, the 8800GTS or GTX are much better value.
The 8800GTS shapes up nicely, for just $260 after rebate
Or, the highest clocked version I could find, $329.99
Of course there are many in between, and any of them would give great performance.
There will; be a large jump from the 8600GTS to the 8800GTS, he will notice a difference.
That card will play every game you throw at it, at good settings, for a while yet.
And to upgrade? Add another for SLI when needed. Thanks for that Calum! I'll let him know about it and see what he wants to do.Also, he's got a Pentium D 3.4 GHz PROCESSOR would u recommend upgrading to a dual core?Pentium D is a dual core CPU, albeit an older one.
If he has the cash, and the right parts lined up, I would recommend getting a Core 2 Duo CPU, otherwise that video card will be limited by the CPU in most games.
It's definitely worth it - even the lowest Core 2 Duo chip almost always outperforms the old top of the line Pentium D Extreme 965.Thanks Calum, I'll let him know and see if he wants to do that. Thanks for all your help!OK, you're more than welcome. While searching through tigerdirect I found this one.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=2583226&sku=P56-8802

It's the 8800GTS but it's a 640MB card for only $100 more than the one you showed me Calum. Would he notice any difference between the two?
The 640Mb version tends to be more pricey, but in most games is worth the extra cash. If he has the money for it, he won't be disappointed
Sorry about the link confusion as well, I messed it up and didn't see. There are now two links, but both are for 320Mb cards (no 640Mb cards under $350).
That's a good price you have there, Newegg offers a 640Mb GTS for the same price as well.Ok thanks so much! Once again I really appreciate all your help! And once again, you're very welcome. It's nice to be THANKED as well, doesn't always happen. Gives me a warm fuzzy FEELING, lol.
Logging off for tonight, you'll probably have another question or two tomorrow when I return, heh.

Solve : WILL CPU UPGRADE AFFECT XP??

Answer»

Dear friends. I wish to upgrade from a dual core to a quad core cpu that my ASUS MOBO does support. Will I have to reinstall windows again or can I continue with everything intact as it is? Thanks for your thoughtsEverything should work fine the way it is. The OS is on your hard drive not the PROCESSOR.thank you beanhead007. that is helpfulNo problem let us know how it turns out. I wish I could afford a quad core processor. Enjoy it! Prior to XP this usually wasn't an ISSUE...but since you have XP;

Changing the CPU will sometimes require a repair INSTALL of XP because it is considered a major hardware upgrade....

These are the 2 methods :

Repair Install of XP

Swapping out a MBoard/CPU

I recommend whichever you CHOOSE to read thoroughly and print out a reference copy...most of all take your TIME.

Solve : Set up Raid 0, still shows old harddrive with old stats?

Answer»

I added a 2nd 320 GB HD to the original 320 GB HD. I used Intel Matrix Storage 6.0 to set up the raid 0 (striping) after the two hour migration I was reset the computer. after the reboot there was a balloon on the task bar "new hardware found" for the array. the I went to pcpitstop.com for a benchmark test. I got about twice the transfer speed. Then I when to my computer, under Hard disk drives it show local disk 293 GB total space and 11.4 GB free space, those are the same stats from before. I checked Intel matrix storage it said:

Solve : How do i make a hard drive the master drive??

Answer»

Hi ,good day. My operating system is Windows 2000 and the hard drive was small only 5 GB. A friend sent me a hard drive with quite a lot of space i think its 40 GB.I got it hooked up but this guy doesnt seem to know how to get it to work as the master drive. Can anyone help?Scoop--your question requires further information to properly answer it.For instance do you intend to reformat all your DRIVES (particularly the existing 5gb drive)? The actual physical process is very simple. It is done by the setting of the jumper PINS on the rear of the hardrives. In this case assuming the only HDD until now was the 5gb it would need to be changed to slave and the "new" 40bg selected to master. However the computer wants to find an operating system at startup. So unless you are PREPARED to install an operating system on your "new" master i doubt that your computer will do very much with only the physical pin designations being done. truenorthThanks.Find out what make the 40G is.
DLoad the free software from the manuf. site.
Connect the 40 to where the CDRom drive/s are.
Reboot and run the DLoad and "clone" the 5G to the 40G.
This will give you an exact replica of what you had on the 5G.
Shut down.
Disconnect the 5G drive, replace it with the 40G with the jumpers set on the back of the 40G set to master and hook it up at the end of the RIBBON cable.
Re-boot a few times in a row and make sure all is running.
If so at a later time you can hook up the 5G on the middle ribbon connector with it's jumpers set to slave and then format/erase it and use it for EXTRA storage.

Free and simple. Just take your time.

Solve : Lost NIC on Motherboard?

Answer»

My WinXP machine freezes 1 minute after booting up and logging in. The motherboard has a built in Ethernet port and sound, separate video card.
I booted into safe mode with networking but there is no network available
Looked at Device Manager list and no network card exists.
Disabled network in BIOS (MAC option) boots into regular mode and does not lock up.
I then installed a network card, booted into regular mode but it locks up just like before.
I then booted into safe mode with networking and the network card and internet connection works.
Is this a bad motherboard?
this could be corrupted drivers, go into the control panel/ system / hardware / device manager/ select the "network adapters" device and uninstall it, in your case you may find the original onboard network device and the additional network card you have added uninstall both. and then SWITCH the pc off.
while off remove the additional card, reboot and go into the BIOS, and activate the onboard network device, SAVE settings and reboot, then after windows starts back if it asks for drivers for new device found, install the drivers for the motherboard, that should fix it all.
if the onboard network device is not working you must disable it in the BIOS. then fit the network card into the PCI slot and reboot, then when widows is up and running it will find the device and ask for drivers, then install the drivers.
a reboot will be required likely after the new drivers are installed, then the main network settings can happen during the reboot, then test for network/internet connections

I cannot uninstall the onboard network adapter because the computer freezes before I can get it uninstalled.
The onboard network adapter does not show up in the Device manager in safe mode even when it is enabled in BIOS. So I uninstalled in safe mode the extra network card, disabled the MAC in BIOS, then rebooted into normal mode and it detected the additional network adapter, but it locked up again.
I also tried installing the latest Nvidia LAN driver but that did not fix things.
Right now I am getting by with a USB Ethernet adapter.
One thing you can try is re-installing the MBoard drivers...what options for the onboard NIC are listed in the BIOS ? ?Can you tell us a little more info please?

what make/model of computer?
what make model of motherboard?
cpu ?
ram?
what size is the power supply rated at? in watts

as long as the onboard NIC is active in the BIOS, any additional NIC will have problems, it has to be disabled in the BIOS.
what make is it anyway?

is there any chance it is set at 1000Mbps ? auto negotiable is better.

If after trying what Patio suggests and if that doesn't work, get another NIC. They're cheap enough. Remember to disable the onboard NIC

Alan <>< Quote from: uesquebeathus on July 04, 2007, 08:35:30 AM

Can you tell us a little more info please?

what make/model of computer? Home built, Single PCI Express video card, firewire card
what make model of motherboard? Chaintech
cpu ? AMD 3500
ram? 1 GIG
what size is the power supply rated at? 450 in watts

as long as the onboard NIC is active in the BIOS, any additional NIC will have problems, it has to be disabled in the BIOS. Onboard NIC is disabled in BIOS
what make is it anyway? Nforce4 motherboard

is there any chance it is set at 1000Mbps ? auto negotiable is better.
Set to auto negotiate

OK, so I have been getting by using an EXTERNAL USB to Ethernet adapter for my network connection.
I have observed a strange behavior.
If I leave the USB-Ethernet adapter plugged in when my computer starts up and logs in and all then the LOCKUP happens
But If I leave the adapter unplugged while the computer boots up, then plug it in once everything is done loading then it works, no lockups. Strange
Some sort of service starting that causes the lockup?

Poorly written drivers perhaps ? ?

A PCI NIC card is about 10 or 15 bucks...No, tried a separate NIC already, same problem.
Onboard Nforce chipset NIC locks up as well

Solve : New Power Supply for Fujitsu Siemens Scenic C610?

Answer»

This PC upgrading is more complex than I expected !!
I bought a new video card so my kids could experience better gaming then found out that I needed to upgrade the power supply.
Challenge is I can't find a 300W supply that fits the small form factor PC - dimension needs to be 80mm x 80mm x 185mm

Any ideas ?

Thanks
CliveWhat video card did you buy? And are you sure that 300W is going to be enough for it? (just covering the bases) If you can't find a PSU that fits that particular case, new cases are not that expensive. You can find some for as cheap as $20. That might be easier to find a power supply for. But I'll do some checking and POST back with some results. Thanks for your response. As we only have PCI I bought a XFX FX5200 card which STATES on the box that it requires a 300W PSU. I have an old IBM case I was looking to use as an alternative but the motherboard of the Siemens PC won't fit it so I'm now heading towards building a new PC - something that I believe is beyond my current skills !
Replacement PSU preferred fix if possibleYou NEED a micro-ATX PSU...
Try newegg.comYeah, after I posted I realized I forgot to ASK if it was a Micro ATX or ATX. Good call Patio!

Solve : 4CoreDual-VSTA mobo?

I just installed a new 4CoreDual-VSTA mother BOARD by ASRock with an INTEL Pentium D Dual Core CPU.
I cannot get the audio working and get the MESSAGE "Your computer's system firmware does not include enough information to properly configure and use this DEVICE.. Contact your computer manufacturer for an update". (code 35)
Surely this is not what everyone RUNS into with this board.
Any suggestions? Oh yes I am still waiting for a response from ASROCK.

Solve : CPU and Motherboard upgrade question....?

Answer»

I am currently using a PENT D processor with a ASUS MoBo...I want to upgrade to a QUAD CORE Processor which would also require a new MoBo...my primary question is, will my existing hardware i.e harddrives, memory, DVD drives, graphics card ect. be able to be intergrated to new MoBo...spec-wise they will be identical, just that the newer MoBo will have more features and be able to accept the QUAD Core where the other can't....and will I need a new harddrive to install my OS (WINDOWS XP)....helpful answers will be greatly APPRECIATED...THANX other hardrive STILL useful like harddisk, video sound, lan or modem.. but you need onother operating systemOk basically , the answer to your question is yes , i don't know the make or model or your graphics's card but i assume as long as it has basic pci-express port as well as a 4 basic slots for your other cards aka sound card , network adapter and all those pieces of hardware ,,,, as for your hard drive is it SATA or basic hard drive you need to get that checked and make sure your board meets sata requirements now i can tell you whether your memory will work or not , but i need to know what type of memory you have ddr2 etc you need to be specific because havening the wrong memory in your new mobo ain't going to be the best of things , your dvd drive will work as well.if you have the full version of Windows it will work on another new mobo ..ddr2 memory will work too.
this fairly brand new mobo here is a nice bargain with included hi-fi audio sound too!

Solve : pc tower troubles?

Answer»

I got a pc tower last yr . when i got it from a FRIEND it was in good shape right at a yr old . i have been using for a while . it runs good no problems . when i shut down i shut down the normal way , very rarely do i have this problem : I shut it down it will not come back on , maybe 5 times this happened , last time i shut it down darn thing would nto come back on . it is a hp pavillion Q 1213 w , really a great pc other than it not coming back on . lots of memory & fast as heck ! thanks jen
Do you have a spare power supply you can try in it and see if that is what the problem is? ALSO take all the memory out except for one stick and try powering it up. Keep replacing the memory sticks to see if one of them is bad. If they aren't then my guess is your power supply is malfunctioning.I switched power supply cords & still nothing . I was wondering in the pc i see alot of wires with a connectors & at the end is #'s like p3 p5 P6 . that are not connected . Are those supposed to be connected ? jen The numbered plugs. Not really they are spares.

Did you try another PSU,or just the cord?

You said"I switched power supply cords & still nothing ."Those connectors are the power connectors to things like the cdrom and HARD DRIVE and floppy drive. I take it the hard drive and cd rom are plugged in? (just asking, not trying to insult anyone) just have to cover the bases.

Solve : installing second hard drive problem?

Answer»

Hi, I just bought an Acer T180 and I want to add my other harddrive in it that has all my PROGRAMS that I use on it.
My problem is, they hook up differently. This puter don't use a strap, it only has one thing going to it that looks like a power line but I can't see how to install the second hd
Any ideas how I can install the second hd???
Thanks so much, CDDoes the new hard drive cable look like this?

If so, this is a SATA cable. I'm guessing the old hard drive is on an IDE CHANNEL?

Depending on how many optical DRIVES you new rig has, you should be able to just put the old hard drive into one of the IDE channels, just change the jumpers to SLAVE.Hi GX44, Yep, that's how it looks..........your so smart
I know how to change the jumpers to make it the slave drive but I don't know what the Optical drives or IDE channels are
Thanks, CDThe optical drives are more than likely hooked up with this cable...

It can also look like this.

Either way, all you need to do is plug the old HD into a spare CONNECTION on the cable, if it has one... If not you can buy them pretty easily. The only other strap I see is the one going to the dvd player, can I hook into that one?
I don't see anything like the second picture.
Thanks, CDIf the cable has a spare channel with the connection looking like this then yeah, you can hook it up to that. The connection will probably be about half way along the cable... But as long as there is an open one there just connect it to that.

P.S. Remember and connect a power cable to it as well, I've forgotten to do that a couple of times, haha.It does, thank you very much, I'm gonna try it now LOL
CDIt worked !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks so much for your help GX
CDNo problem

Glad I could help

Solve : Difference between ATX and Micro ATX?

Answer»

What exactly is the size difference between the ATX and Micro ATX motherboard? My friend is getting a new MB and I'm trying to figure out which one he NEEDS. Mine is an ATX but I can't really tell that much of a difference. Thanks for any help guys!A Micro ATX motherboard is SMALLER in dimensions than an ATX motherboard and, therefore, will have fewer expansion slots. At most, you could have 3 PCI slots on a microATX board and many will only have 2 PCI slots, while a many full ATX boards will have 5 PCI slots.

The critical issue in deciding which motherboard to get is your computer case. "Full tower" ATX cases will always accommodate ATX motherboards. Most, but not all, Mid-tower cases will ALSO accommodate ATX motherboards. However, mini-tower cases will most likely only accommodate microATX boards, although some will accommodate ATX boards.

A microATX board can be often be installed in a full or mid tower ATX case; however, I suggest you verify this before buying a microATX board to put in a full or mid tower ATX case. If you do this type of INSTALLATION, you'll just have some slot openings on the back of your case that will never be USED.

Solve : What kind of PSU should i buy?

Answer»

I have a dell dimension 4700 and in my other POST i was told that my psu was the most likely cause to my computer's overheating. Anyone have a link to a decent one that would work on the computer?would this psu work with a dell dimension 4700? if u need more system info leave a reply...

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A1151103That PSU would probably be fine...although not top of the line Zalman has a decent reputation for their product. That's a lot of money for a 360W PSU though. Well i wouldn't recommend 25.00 PSU's to anybody...i've seen hundreds of far more expensive components ruined by a cheap PSU.That's very true Patio. I'd have a hard time recommending cheap PSU's too. So if 360W is all you need yeah, get a nice quality one. (well always get a quality one but hopefully you KNOW what I'm trying to say).Ok screw getting a nice PSU for my parents computer. (ILL go buy my own comp in a few months) but for now would a cheap psu work fine for a few months or will it have the same problems? one like this

This OneI'd be leery of that one...if it's not actually for a Dell as we had this conversation before you risk burning out expensive components...check the local repair shops in your area...i'd trust them alot further than ebay.I found a brand new 400 watt psu for dell 4700 on ebay for $40 so we'll see how that WORKS and if it doesnt work....i dont know what else could be the cause of my overheating problems....

I have been READING around and some ppl have been saying that it could be fan related, I do have 1 fan in the front (on the front of my case) that is basicly dead it barely spins at all. Is it possible that my mother board can see that this fan is screwing up and will not boot up?First, you NEED a fan. If your CPU gets hot, you will have those PROBLEMS. I have a fan on my CPU and on my hdd.

Second. Clicking is your hdd on the way out. Just because it doesn't register any problems when booting up doesn't mean it is okay. Does it do it all the time? Run a diagnostic program from your hdd manufacturer's web site. They are usually free.

An hdd can be on the way out and still be working. When it hits the sectors that are BAD, you get the clicking. Been there a few times! That is why I have a few extra hdds.

Solve : Computer does not post?

Answer»

I just finished assembling my new system but I can't get it to work. When I power up the machine the fans turn but the computer does not go through POST - no beeps. I have a Biostar TF7025-M2 MoBo and the status LED indicates "VGA Error". I tried to search on Google but could not REALLY find anything that helps me and I don't really know what to do.

Here are the SPECS:
Motherboard: Biostar TF7025-M2 NVIDIA GeForce 7025
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Windsor 2.4GHz
RAM: 2GB (2 x 1GB) G.SKILL DDR2 800 Dual CHANNEL

That is all I have installed so far because I wanted to make sure everything works before adding the HDD, DVD drive, etc. Oh, and I am using the on-board video, no separate graphics card.

Does anyone have an idea what could be the problem. I don't think it's the memory. I tried it with all two and I tried it with each memory stick individually.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.Well a VGA error indicates a problem with the graphics card. Are you using the on board graphics card or have you installed another one? If you have, make sure it's installed correctly.I am using the on-board graphics - also, I used two different monitors both of which are workingDo you happen to have another graphics card you could try?Unfortunately not - if everything ELSE fails I might get a gfx card to see whether that worksOkay

Then double check that the ram modules and CPU are properly installed.
Also, Have you remembered to use spacers when you installed the mobo? The back of the mobo mustn't touch metal.Check and check. It seems the CPU is properly installed and I have swapped the RAM sticks several times but still nothing.

Solve : Hard drive issues. I cant delete properly?

Answer»

Hey Im just wondering..... when I load something on the comp that if i happen to remove it by a unistall program or manually delete it, yes i cant SEE the files anymore but my hard drive reads the same amount of space taken. Ive emptied the recycle bin, it does nothing. My used space amount keeps going up and up until it pretty much crashes and I have to start over again. Before I formated my comp, when I used to maually delete something the same thing would happen but it never went to the recycle bin, if that helps. And also, my mouse shivers occasionaly. I dont have a wireless mouse and its fairly new, but it was doing it to my old mouse aswell. Any help? Thank u if you can't find it in the control panel (add/remove programs), ikitty has had luck using: search>all files/folders>enter your search. then manually delete from the search program (also, go to the folder and make SURE it is deleted.)

and, search>advanced>hidden files/folders. manually delete from search program and go to the folder to make sure it is deleted.

then do a "disc cleanup"...Is this the same machine and OS that is having the USB problems ? ?dear patio,

it seems to be posted by the same person...Quote from: patio on August 01, 2007, 02:57:43 PM

Is this the same machine and OS that is having the USB problems ? ?

Yeah mate is it the same comp and OS. Its abit of an annoying computer lol. Do u think its safe to do a disk cleanup? Will it be able to handle it? lol Sorry that i posted two topics b4 its just that after i posted the FIRST one i forgot to metion this other stuff and then i was trying to see if i could delete it and put it all in one but i couldnt. Sorrydear wackinternational,

ikitty thinks that if you follow the steps provided, it will be fine to do a disc clean-up.

good luck!why does ikitty write in the third person all the time? Does ikitty think it is cool?

Hehehehe thanks ikitty! Ill give it a whirl and see what happens lol. Just went to your other topic to see if there was a clue about your system and LO! Win98SE. Do you have RegClean on your system? Do a search for it. It is a utility that comes with 98SE and one of the best Reg cleaners for being free. GET rid of all your temp files. Especially those in Internet Temp.

If you do, run it. Then Start/shutdown/restart in MS-DOS. When you get to the DOS prompt type after the prompt: cd.. (make sure you use two periods), then after C\: scandisk. It will run a nice system scan and then a deep surface scan.

Don't use that freakin' disk clean up thing. The scandisk from the DOS prompt is not only faster, but thorough.

When Scandisk is done, the DOS prompt will come back up, type exit. After Windows boots in: Start/Run/defrag. After the defrag, reboot.

I hate XP's way of cleaning the hdd.

Now, another speculation, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay the 'ell ago, I got a virus. It wrote over 300gigs to an 850 hdd. Ghost files, but filled up the hdd. Took awhile to get rid of it. Mostly because I had NO clue what I was doing back then and was scared to death to even open the Registry.

Another option, and this is absolutely what I would do with all those problems, reformat.

Solve : COMPUTER WON'T POWER UP AFTER DISCONNECTING AND CLEANING, HELP!?

Answer»

Problem began with noisy fan, then progressed to spontaneous shut down. I disconnected all external CABLES and opened COVER to clean. Hooked everything back up (except power source to disc drives...oops forgot those), and everything powered up. Got questions about primary and secondary slaves. Disconnected everything again and connected everything, including drives, but now computer will not power up at all. Does anyone have any suggestions as what to try next? Welcome!
We are going to need more info.
Which OS are you using?
What do you mean with doesn't power at all?
Like you can't get past the bios or it doesn't start at all?

Jonas Please forgive my computer ignorance! For OS I will say Windows, and by not powering up I mean not at all.

When I took everything apart I mean all the way down to the heat sink and I had no idea what thermal paste was so of COURSE it didn't get replaced. Could I have burned something up or shorted something out?

The computer came up yesterday and I made it to the CMOS and was totally confused. I'm sure I pressed all the wrong buttons and shortly thereafter the computer stopped responding. I then did a hard shutdown. Tried messing with it again by disconnecting and connecting everything again (including drives)and now nothing.ok so your saying your computer is not powering up at all..........hmmm well

The heat sink is the thermal compound that you put on your cpu ( computers brain under the system fan) and if its not applied correctly it will over head and cause a system shut down , now because im not there i cant see the damage its done or what has happened , i would say try and put a new layer of thermal compound on the cpu (If and when you decide to do this i will go through it with you step by step to avoid any issues ..... the other alternatives is to purchase a new psu , (power suply unit).......heres a picture of the thermal compound

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=32417&C=Maplin&U=SearchTop&T=THERMAL%20HEATSINK%20COMPOUND&doy=25m7Are there any ways to test the psu? What would keep it from coming on? Could a short in the motherboard affect it?I don't want to rule out your motherboard has already shorted out ......... so it is possible , i don't think there is a test for your psu no , but there cheap enough to BUY you can get a 500wats for $40 or 30pounds ........ if you do decide to get a new psu ....... and it still doesnt work go back to the store and get a refund with that money and add a little extra get yourself a new motherboard ....

note Before doing the refund ..... check the stores return policy you may have to shop around a little , or you can find a CHEAPER 2nd hand one and just use that to test if it is your psu .

If your happy to open your computer ........ i will show you what has to connect from the psu to the motherboard......... everything circled in green is what is meant to be connected

Note: This is a shot of my mobo , your layout may be different...

Have a good look: Quote

Disconnect from the mains supply, remove your cmos battery, go shopping and when you return put the battery back in and boot up.Relax and watch the below video a few times.

Solve : A second opinion.?

Answer»

Before I begin I'll start with my computer's vitals.

Iwill KK266Plus motherboard
1.5GHz AMD Athlon XP Palomino (Model 6) Core
1.5GB Kingston Value SDRAM
BFG GEFORCE 7600 512MB AGP Graphics Card
Sound Blaster Audigy SE OEM
Windows XP Home Edition

If you need more details on my setup just ask.

My ram and graphics are about as far as they're going to be able to go. So I decided to upgrade to the fastest possible processor in the Palomino core, the AMD Atlhon XP 2100 (1.7GHz). Upon installing the processor I started to encounter NUMEROUS STOP ERROR screens. Now I have experienced a few hardware issues reguarding the placement of my network card/sound card ect, but had fixed them years ago. Thinking that perhaps this may be an IRQ related issue I began moving my sound card to different PCI slots to no avail I still encounted more STOP ERROR screens. I removed the sound card all together, which seem to HELP the issue for a few hours before yet another stop ERROR message appeared. Some of the stop error messages are as follows:

STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x8057C018, 0xF78E2AD4, 0XF78E27D0)

STOP: 0x000000C2 (0x00000040, 0x00000000, 0x80000000, 0x00000000)

STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xB6BAF736, 0xB5859888, 0x00000000)

STOP: 0x00000050 (OxE6CA8008, 0x00000000, 0x8054B020, 0x00000002)

STOP: 0x0000001A (0x00041284, 0x0F30B001, 0x00006112, 0xC0503000)

Some of these error messages identified the problems such as:

SPBBCDRV.sys - Address B6BAF736 base at B6B90000 (Sound driver I assumed)

BAD_POOL_CALLER
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
MEMORY_MANAGEMENT
WIN32K.SYS
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

The only conclusion that I can come to is that while the processor is able to boot up correctly, it is damaged or not compatiable with my motherboard. I do not believe that it is not compatiable though.

Before I get the standard response of "Check your drivers and update them"...I have updated both my sound card driver and video card driver. Motherboard driver can not be updated due to the fact that Iwill in no longer in business. I could go through the chip manufacture for an updated driver, but feel that its is a waste of time CONSIDERING that by updating my sound/video driver as yet to show even the slightest bit of improvement.

So....Is this a hardware issue? Do you think that it is the processor? Should I try and configure the IRQ's and rearrange PCI cards? Thanks for any responses ahead of time
Hiya redbull i recieved similar messages today with my pc i did the system matic checks and foungd that it was the memory, if you can change the memory see how far that gets you and report back
all the best good luck
SimshiDoes the MBoard support that processor ? ?
They will list which ones it does at the board manuf. site.

Many boards didn't always keep up with CPU advances and even though the slot architecture is the same they didn't neccessarily support the latest chips in a line of increasing performance. It is unlikely that it is a RAM problem. My RAM has worked since I installed in in 2005. It wasn't until I installed the processor that the STOP ERROR messages started to appear. None the less I do have a few PC133 128 MB RAM chips laying around and I'll give them a shot.

Reguarding wether or not the motherboard surports this processor....IWILL is no longer in business and there websites have been offline for quite sometime now. Forunately I have the retail manual that came with my board and it states that accepts speeds from 700MHz to 1.6GHz and higher.

Of course from my own personal experience I have found that the board will accept XP processors with a Palomino (Model 6) Core only. I've tried faster Throughbred cores, but they have not worked.

Also, at one time I had this processor in the past running on a different computer with the same motherboard, using a different graphics card and no sound card.

I still have the 1.5GHz AMD Athlon XP (Palomino Core) and will more than likely re-install the processor tonight.

Is it possible for a processor to be damaged, but still boot up?

Descriptions of the two processor that I'm using.

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K7/AMD-Athlon%20XP%201800%2B%20-%20AX1800DMT3C.html

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K7/AMD-Athlon%20XP%202100%2B%20-%20AX2100DMT3C.html

I think it's as i suspected ...that board may not support that chip.

And yes i have had CPU's that would be able to boot but would not run anything properly.

To test the one in question swap it into a board you know supports the specific CPU and take it around the block a few times...It is a strong possiblity that the motherboard may not surport this chip, but comparing the two SIDE by side their isn't much difference. Different clock speed (Mulitplyer) but same FSB and voltage ect even same core. But I think I'm going to go ahead and reinstall my 1.5GHz and run with that. I was installing the 1.7GHz to play BF2 (which I was doing before with the 1.5GHz ) figuring Id get better performace on the game from the higher clock speed.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115002#specWeird pricing like this happens sometimes.
The differences are as follows: the 6750 has a higher FSB (1333 vs 1066), lower multiplier (8x vs 10x), higher voltage (0.962 - 1.350 V vs 0.85 - 1.3525 V)
It's also ALMOST a year newer.
Seems to be the replacement for the E6700, which would explain the odd pricing.thanks Calum.

The price difference just seamed REALLY strange.

also, the prices seam to be backwards, i would assume that the newer MODEL would be less EXPENSIVE, however that does not seam to be the case.

i guess that clears it up Quote

also, the prices seam to be backwards, i would assume that the newer model would be less expensive, however that does not seam to be the case.
The newer model is less expensive.
E6750 is $219.99, E6700 is $317.

Anyway, you're welcome, glad I could help.

Solve : Removing Case from HP Pavillion 8756C?

Answer»

Pavillion 8756C doesn't power up - no lights, no sound nothing. I changed out the power cord and still nothing. Someone told me that it's probably the psu. I have another 8756C and thought I would grab the power supply out of it to see if that's really the problem. BUT...the real problem now is that I cannot get to where the psu plugs into the mother board or whatever it plugs into. I can only get one side of the case open and this side does not allow me to get to the end of that power supply. So...thought I would just switch out the hard drive for now (need something off that hard drive ASAP) and put the hard drive into the working computer. But, same problem. When I remove the other side of the tower there is still no way to get to this stuff because there is just another case there with no visible screws to remove. Agghhhhhh....frustrating. Any suggestions will be appreciated! Both sides of the case are off and you can't get to the PSU plug for the MBoard ? ?
Something doesn't sound right here. There is an internal case that the motherboard is attached to. The hard drive, CD drives are in a metal housing directly in front of the motherboard. I cannot find any way to remove the housing. It's probably something really simple but I cannot figure it out. I've never seen anything like this before. It's very frustrating to say the least. I can post a picture if I am allowed to do that here if a picture would help.Sure...a pic would be helpful.

I'm not familiar with all HP cases though i've seen some WIERD Dell units in my timeI have run into this before on HP and Compaq machines. The motherboard 'swings' out. Trying to remember here if there are screws near the top front. You have to be very careful when you swing it out because of the cards that are connected to the mb and the back of the case. Putting it all back together: HOLD your breath, try. Breathe deep. Leave the room. Try again. Trust me, if you do that enough, it just falls into place and you want to scream.

My daughter has a Pavillion 8756 and I have had it apart more times than I want to tell you. In FACT, I will be staying over there while they go to Bristol in a couple weeks, and off it comes again!!Thanks for the info. I decided to get on HPs website yesterday and actually found directions for getting to the motherboard. With the HP 8756C the "drive cage" comes out of the front of the computer thereby giving access to the motherboard. It was tricky even with the directions because the screw locations are not accurate. Anyway...I was finally able to get the hard drive out and REPLACED. What an ordeal!

I did find that the last repair shop left my fan unplugged which was a good thing to come across. I GUESS that goes where motherboard is marked CPU_FAN...I'm hoping that is the case anyway.

Thanks again for the help!

Solve : My Monitor keeps on going to standby mode for some reason. NEED HELP?

Heres the problem, i recently bought a new graphics card GEFORCE 7600 GS. There was no dramas for the first week but after, my monitor kept on going to standby.(GREEN light goes to Orange light). This happens every time i try to turn on the computer so it takes me like 3-30 tries to turn on my computer, and when i do turn it on, sometimes the monitor turns off again. I get really pissed of when that happens, if someone could give me ADVISE on what might be wrong, that would be nice. If i don't get any advise soon ill probably break the computer with my fist, so please help if you know what is wrong.
Thank YouDid you have the problem before you put in the new graphics card? If not, go to the properties of the card and look for any function that deals with 'standby' and turn it off.

Alan <>< I'm not certain, but I think it might be that your new video card is overheating. Does it have a fan or a heatsink? If there are other devices in your PCI ports you could maybe rearrange them so there is more clearance for the video card. Also, install the latest driver for the video card if you haven't already done so. You should also try reseating your video card, blowing out the PCI-E slot with a can of compressed AIR (DON'T use a vaccum cleaner) and wiping the contacts on the video card with alcohol and a Qtip.I've tested my graphics card on my friends computer and the same thing happens. The Graphics card must be SCREWED up.

Solve : RAID hard drive bad?

Answer»

I have a Dell E310 been having problems with the hard drive ever since I bought this thing! Dell would not REPLACE the hard drive just fix it. This computer has crashed 4 time now. I found out it is RAID hard drives(2 drives) I need to get a new hard drive. Dell will not help... out of warrenty.
Can I switch the hard drives hoping the second one is good or do I have to buy 2 or 1 hard drive and which one is bad? Money is an issue so the cheapest is best for now. I need this computer for homeschooling.
Please help.... Thank you. you can get one drive. make sure it is the same size and speed, preferably the same model too. Do you know which drive is bad?
check www.newegg.com for prices.
No I do not know which one is bad is there a why to FIND out?

Thank youwhen you start up your computer it should tell you after the BIOS posts.
on my intel motherboard, I can hit Ctrl-I at a certain point (it says when) and I can do RAID configuration. Your computer should have something similar.Or , when your computer 1st boots it will actual say whether the status is ok our not ......

Tony..

Can I just switch the drives? what would that do? Since one is just for backup if I were to just switch them maybe the computer will work ok TILL I get a new set of hard drives.

Ok well you could just reformat the HD its faulty at the moment anyway and see if that does the trick , its worth a shot ...... and yes try switching them 2 ....Oh, ya. Take the faulty one out, the other one should still work, but without RAID functionality. Not sure which is faulty? Take one out and see if it boots. If it does, that's the good one. If thatworks and you don't need RAID, don't bother buying another hdd.

Solve : Dell dimension 4700 turning off and wont turn back on?

Answer»

I own a Dell dimension 4700, its about 2 years old. 512MB ram, pentium 4, CPU 2.80GHz, 2.79GHz. (thats how its listed in system properties...) We had been having a few problems with it for awile now. The dvd rom drive didnt work and our hardrive failed, which we just recently replaced and it was working fine for about a week but then it started doing what it had been doing for a few months before. It would shut down and make 1 beep and then just flash an orange light. We had to unplug it for a few hours before it would work, and then it would just shut back down a few hours later. I do play World of Warcraft and it seems to be shutting off more when i play that game then any other thing i do on the computer. I kno it has nothing to do with the hardrive or dvd rom since wejust had those replaced. and i just checked and both the fans in it are working but yet it still gets really hot. It wouldnt turn on all morning since it shut off early this morning, but now its working fine but i kno itll do it again. Anyone have any idea what could be wrong with it and what could be done to fix it? ThxPSU is suspect and is likely over heating.Sorry but im not very good with the hardware aspect of computers, so how do i fix it? just buy a new one? if i do buy a new one will it just do the same thing and overheat? And how do i kno what kind will work in my computer? If the cooling is insufficient that is a possibility. You should first get some canned air and give a good cleaning, blowing out as much dust as possible. If that doesn't solve the problem, replacement is in order. Try to get a PSU that is beefier (higher wattage rating) and has it own fan.Ok, will any psu work as long as it fits in the computer, or do i need one specified for dell dimension 4700, cus im only 16 so i dont make a ton of money at my job, i dont want to be buying the wrong kind...... lol My friends r LIKE computer geniuses so they could easily install it for me as long as i bought the right kind....I believe only a Dell PSU will fit this computer, wait for someone to confirm this.
Carry on cleaning as 2K Dummy suggested because overheating does sound like the problem.
If you're worried about doing it then get your mates to do it for you but only if you trust them 100% otherwise get a quote to clean it from a store, it shouldn't cost much.i've cleaned it about 3 timees since it started doing this a few months back, is an electric air compresser a good way or will it harm the computer?I see you have started a couple more THREADS regarding your PSU, I for one am not convinced your PSU is at fault.
Go into bios, check your temps and stay there for a while, monitor the temps and see if it shuts down from there.well thats the thing.... it never shuts down unless i have LARGE programs or GAMES running like world of warcraft, i doubt it will shut down in bios
Check your cpu fan, heat sink fitment & make sure it's clean.ok my computer has been on for about 2 straight days now and i have played world of warcraft a lot during that time........... taking the side of the computer off and keeping a house fan blowing into it has solved the problem............ of course i discover this right after i spent $60 on a new psu......Quote from: Fed on August 03, 2007, 01:30:37 PM

Solve : Mouse not recognized when computer is turn on and boots up?

Answer»

I have a Dell computer system operating on Windows XP. I have a standard roller wheel mouse that CAME with the system. Everything worked fine for 1 1/2 years, but now when I turn the system on (power up)the mouse is not recognized. I must use the tab key to get to RESTART. When I restart the system (rather than a shut down) the mouse works fine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Delbert Are you sure the mouse just hasnt gone ....... as in broken..... is it a usb ....

Tony It is in a USB. TRIED it in a different USB and the same thing occures. Tried a new mouse and it does the same thing. Mouse works fine once it is recognized.A USB mouse will not be recognised until Windows has loaded the USB device drivers.
This is an excellent REASON everyone should own a PS2 mouse and keyboard...if only for emergencies.

Solve : PC "beeps" quietly occasionally.?

Answer»

I'm having a bit of an unusual problem.

I recently moved from Australia to the USA and had the insides of my computer shipped over so I could put it all back together inside a new tower (it was much cheaper than shipping the tower itself).

ANYWAY, everything went together fine and fired up perfectly - other than some early problems with recurring infection with the VUNDO virus (which is now solved) - the machine seems to be running perfectly.

The only problem is every now and then I hear this very soft "beep" from the case - it's PRETTY quiet and it took me a while to be sure it was coming from the computer - I had to physically sit next to it and wait for it to happen. I took the panel off and it was easier to hear - it's sometimes preceeded by a bit of a soft clicking noise, like when a hard drive starts up or a fan catching (but I couldnt see any cords hitting fans).

It doesn't sound like the beep you get on startup, in fact it doesnt sound like the PC speaker at all - its more of a slight "chirp" than a beep. Sometimes it goes for many hours without happening, then all of a sudden ill get three or four beeps in a single minute, then it will stop again. It's really freaking me out.

I'm a little concerned that it is perhaps one of my four hard drives making the noise - I'm having a bit of a funny issue with one of them. This particular drive is in three partitions, G, H and I. G drive (It's a long story) is my system drive. Anyway, for some reason when I navigate around H: partition in explorer, explorer sort of locks up for 10 seconds or so when I try to enter the Program Files directory (or exit it). I have no problem with any other directory on this partition, nor do I have the problem with any dirs on G or I. Strangely, if I navigate in with "Total Commander" rather than explorer, I experience no lockup whatsoever entering that dir on H. - Still, it's strange.

Anyway, I'm pretty confounded by this beep. Im sort of ignoring it at the moment, but computers are like children to me - I can't stand there being something wrong with them and I stress unless everything is perfect - rogue "beeps" are a worry.

My machine is an oldish Abit BD7 motherboard with 1.5GB DDRAM, Winfast Geforce 7800GS, Buffalo wireless network card, some generic regular network card, Soundblaster Audigy 2, Four Western Digital hard drives of varying size (two SATA ones on a sata card) and Two IDE (including the weirdly ACTING one). This is all inside an Antec NSK6500 tower with 430W power - my system runs idle temp of around 48c and gets into the high 50s under stress.

One final thing I thought of - because my mainboard is pretty old (I have never been able to afford a full upgrade since 2002 so it's been a case of adding on as best I can), could the beep be related to the BIOS battery running low? A warning to replace it or something?

Thanks in advance for any help or even just ideas.

MikeThe beep could be caused by many things. Why not start a program of eliminating possibles by:

1. Replace the cmos battery, they cost just a few dollars and are readily available. If that doesn't fix the beep at least you've replaced a battery which is probably way past its use-by date.

2. Run manufacturers diagnostics on your hard drives. The diagnostic program is free for download from the Western Digital site and if you can't find that then the Seagate diagnostic tool will suffice. If there are no errors then at least you know your hdd's are fine & dandy.

3. Run Memtest86 to check out your Ram, another program free for download.

4. Check the temperatures and fan speeds/voltages against the mobo specs. The temps may be well within specs but always worth checking.

Finally, before doing any of the above, ensure that your backup is up-to-date..

Good luck

I put my money on #2 (HardDrive)Quote from: RedBull on August 03, 2007, 12:15:54 PM

I put my money on #2 (HardDrive)

OK i'll take #1...Ok a little more info.

The "beep" is, I have now decided", accompanied by a bit of a "click" so its more of a beep-click, with the beep but being first - sort of "beepclick".

Secondly. it only seems to start happening towards the end of a long day of the computer being on. This may just be a coincidence but I didnt have a beep all day yesterday until the machine had been switched on for about 14 hours, at which time it was making more beepclicks than ever.

Now, the next day, I have been powered up for 30 mins or so and no beeps yet.

This doesn't seem to be a temp issue as my temp has been stable around 48c all day long, including when the beeps are happening.

Im starting to get paranoid it might be a hard drive, but I have run chkdsks on them and even defragged my system and they are still alive for now.

CMOS battery idea would be the best thing it could be, but why would it go nuts at the end of the day, and whats with the small clicky sound?

Could my motherboard, circa 2002, be freaking out at a 430W PSU?From the end of your POST working backwards...
No. Any MBoard should not freakout at the size of the PSU as the board and PSU together regulate how much power is consumed
Too much...never a problem
Not enough...issues galore.

CMOS battery is a 5 minute fix for less than 5 bucks. As always when working inside the case remove all power sources first and take anti-static precautions.

The best method to check HDD's health is to DLoad the diagnostics from the HDD manuf. site...most reliable tests there are.

Although your temps are within reason i would still check the insides and do some housekeeping paying special attention to all fans and heatsinks.

Ok a little while ago my optical drive stopped working, turns out the IDE cable was loose at the motherboard connector.

Could the beep have been "hey, your cable is loose" - even though the drive was working until recently?

I don't think I have heard the click-beep since I plugged it firmly in.I've never heard of this but sure.Quote from: patio on August 04, 2007, 07:07:44 AM
I've never heard of this but sure.

Alas, it was not to be. Got a couple of beeps just now, went inside the case again -

Another theory. My motherboard lost the little plastic clips that firmly hold the video card in place - its quite a heavy card and maybe its getting jostled around in the socket a bit and thats causing it - I know im grasping at straws, but it seemed a little loose. I resteated the card and im going to sit my computer on the side a bit so the card isnt just hanging there and see what happens. In the meantime, everything critical is off the most suspect drive. If it has to be a hard drive I really hope its the 80MB IBM deskstar thats an old leftover drive for extra space - I can live with that one dying. I rean Western Digital's diags on all my WD drives and they came up fine - at least with the "quick check"HDD's don't beep...period.

They do however click. This is normal on older drives bu t on a NEWER drive it is signalling the demise of that drive otherwise known as the click of death.

DLoad and run the diagnostics from the drive manuf. site. This will tell you whether to trust it with data or not.

Have you replaced that CMOS battery yet ? ?
I'm still betting this is the source of the beeps.

Solve : Ram Decrease.?

Answer»

Some RAM is being used by your graphics card, because it is an IGP.
Is there a way you can tell how MUCH it is using?
Try going into the BIOS, and look under integrated peripherals or similar.Probably 128 MG.

Which means all the RAM is there.

However the vid card may not be the CULPRIT here...the Human MEMORY might be

512 + 256 = 768

But if you ACTUALLY added a different stick or it was mislabeled then:

512 + 128 = 640.i think it's using 128 mb of ram. But still, why did it ORIGINALLY say 700+ now it goes down to 600+? bit strange

UPS = Uninterruptible Power Supply. That's not something in your computer. It's a battery backup unit to keep your computer running in case of power outage and also provide a smooth, even power supply. Did you mean UPS or PSU (the power supply unit in your computer)?soybean, he replied asking about "600W, 500W or pure sing wave". I think he meant "pure sine wave". That is a UPS term.

extreme, 500W and 600W are power ratings. Are you getting confused between UPS and PSU?

We don't know how much power your PC draws, so 600W is the safer choice for a UPS, out of 500W or 600W. It's not my money anyway! You are a fool if you spend money like that because a guy in a forum said so!

There are TWO kinds of UPS

- "modified sine wave" is the cheaper kind used for PC workstations where the power supply is cheap to replace if you burn it out with the rough AC waveform.

- "pure sine wave" is a more expensive type of UPS for mainly used for servers where you must have clean power to protect the equipment from failing prematurely.

Since you have given us next to no information, I'll happily spend your money for you - get the biggest pure sine wave UPS you can afford!

Why do you want a UPS anyway?

Your question seems to imply a UPS is not necessary. I wouldn't be without one.

Maybe I'm lucky. I LIVE in the UK, in an area where power outages and dirty AC are very rare. Very few urban domestic users bother with them. If I lived out in the sticks in a country with more extreme weather with 5 miles of 11 Kv wires on poles linking me to the substation, maybe I'd think differently.

At my house I have had 1 power outage in 10 years. A UPS is just not needed.

Well, you're fortunate then. Here in the Ohio community where I live, I'm not out in the sticks but I'm in a small town that's exploding with new development. Maybe that's why brief, noticeable, power flickers are not uncommon here.

Solve : Cannot View Password Protected User on Hard Drive?

Answer»

I have a hard drive that I removed from a computer with a BAD MoBo. I am trying to get the data off this hard drive and I can see all the data except for one USER who was password protected. I have tried to put the hard drive in another box as the master but I get the error NTLDR missing. I have tried to do a repair install but when it loads the files and tries to reboot I get the NTLDR missing error. With another master hard drive in the box, I can see all the users including the password protected one but cannot access the files because of the password and there is no PLACE to enter it as the hard drive will not start on it's own without being the SLAVE drive. I have tried CHKDSK /r to repair the hard drive but that does not work, I still get the NTLDR missing error. I have tried BartPE to remove the password but I have to have a password in there for BartPE to work. It will not allow you to put a blank password in it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This has been going on for a couple of days now.
Thanks,

Solve : Laser in my Laptop LCD screen?

Answer»

Well here is the story...

My laptop HINGE cover on the left side broke off and now, a while later, there is a red laser this is on the edge of that hinge. It goes from bottom to top inside my laptop screen. What caused this and is it an easy fix? What do you mean "a red laser"? Do you know what a laser is?

It's a red line that is extremely THING, it runs up the inside of my laptop screen... Does that help you?!OK I'm with you now. A thin red line on a new LCD monitor means it needs returning as defective. It could mean you have a failed display driver chip on the motherboard or it it could be a problem with the flexible ribbon CABLE that LINKS the screen to the motherboard. It is probably a concidence that you broke the hinge cover on that side.

You need to take it to a repair shop for an estimate. How old is it?

Solve : DVD/CDrom and CD-R problem. Need some fresh ideas to fix this one.?

DVD/CDrom tray opens and closes however it no longer recognizes any DVDS, CD, etc... I tried resetting the BIOS, I've tried removing it and restarting... it stopped working after I rebooted it (hadn't rebooted in a few days). Before the reboot I updated iTunes and installed an game from 1996. I've tried System Restore. I cannot remove the game because to uninstall it prompts me to insert the games cd in the computer when of course doesn't recognize it. Help me guys

Number 2 - my CD-R is completely not working and hasn't for a while now. It doesn't show up on the "My Computer" screen or in the device MANAGER. It did reappear once drive and all and worked for a short while then it all disappeared again and has worked since.

Is there any hope left in the universe for me ? I beg of you oh woooo is me.Hey Bill, we are going to need more information to help*
Operating System, what virus pro are you using, have you messed in the bios prior to this happening? Did you move the puter from one area to another b4 this? Did you uninstall anything just before it went poop ? It sounds like a driver issue... Please post as much info on your computer specs you can and it will make it much easier to try and help you....
Thanks!

Windows XP, I have an old virus protect on there from 2000 (Macafee) I did run my old Macafee virus protection and it found two virus' that I deleted. the virus was called W95/Coke.22231, haven't moved it no, didn't remove anything else that I can think of...

Computer is a Sony Vaio PC with a DVD/CDrom and a CD-R that originally had Window ME and I updated it to XP sometime ago but at least one of my cdroms (dvd/cdrom) worked then.

I reset the BIO per a sony reps suggestion but that didn't do anything... I followed other steps to fix the problem that were SUGGESTED like removing the upperfilter and lower filter however when I got to where those filters were suppose to be that were missing - I do not know if they were deleted, moved or were never there in the first place.

thanksok, why don't you 1st. go into " my computer "
right click on the dvd/cd drive --- in mine its (E:)
go down and click on properties
click on "hardware" on top
what does it say the drives current status is ?

if not working click - troubleshoot

Welcome to CH billy.

One post per issue is sufficient. More threads do not always produce more suggestions.
It says that the device is working normally.

I have looked at things more and it seems to look like the problem may lie in that my upperfilter and lowerfilter in the registry is missing. Is there a fix for that? Is it possible to install replacement filters?Be very careful..............

http://www.randomfix.com/2007/04/12/windows-vista-%E2%80%93-missing-cddvd-rom-drive/First of all, you need decent anti-virus protection. Outdated McAfee isn't gonna cut it. You should install AVG Free, update it, and scan in Safe Mode.

Also, make sure everything's connected properly. If all else fails, you can replace the drive for about $40 including shipping.
Okay...

The cables are all connected, virus protection is up to date and it's virus free. I went to the link and did what it said to the filters in the registry - when I got to the filters the only one I had was an UpperFilter which I removed like it said then I restarted my computer and I'm not getting anything. The DVD/CDrom opens and closes abut stilll does not read DVD/CD's.

FYI - I have a CD-R also which won't open at all. I cannot find the drive list in "My Computer" screen and it doesn't appear in the device manager - it's like it disappeared.... it's STAR WARS The Phantom CD-R Drive"

Okay I have an antivirus software installed - I've ran it and everything appears to be okay.

It seems to lie in the registry. There have been changes to it and it's affecting my DVDrom drive. Causing it to not read or recognize DVDs or CDs.

Is there anyway to restore my registry to proper working order?

Thank You.Right click both drives under Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager and select remove...ignore the warning and re-boot
Does this help ? ?

p.s. How old are these drives ? ?
They both came with the computer. But the upper and lower filters are missing in the registry. I feel like this is the problem.

Will correcting that possibly make my drives work again? and how would I go about getting those filters back into the registry?

thank you Also... my second CDR drive is completely missing from the device manager and has been for a while now - nobody seems to know how to get it to show up on my computer. I've tried everykind of trouble-shooting but still the drive is missing the device manager and when I open "My Computer". The first drive (DVDrom) appears in the device manager and "My Computer" windows but even when I DELETE them and restart it doesn't fix that drive.

The only definitive way to test those drives would be to install them in a known working machine to determine if they are faulty or not...
Brand new DVD burners are available @ NEWEGG for about 40 bucks.

Solve : Monitor Help?

Answer»

My wife called me at work today and TOLD me she was having issues with her Dell. She thought it was something to do with the keyboard. I brought a working keyboard from my work. When I got to the computer, the screen was blank but the power was on. I could feel the fan RUNNING and some of the lights were light up on the front of the Dell.

When I hit some of the buttons on the monitor, a message came up that the powersaver mode was on and to hit any key or click the mouse. Both of these actions caused the message to disappear but the screen never came on.

Any idea as to what my issue may be?

Thanks in advance...

Try shutting down completely.
Remove the power CORDS and double check all the connections on the rear of the machine.
Replace the power cord and restart and see if this helps...I tried switching up the power cord... No Dice! I tried unhooking the monitor and hooking up another. No IMAGE. The new monitor INFORMED me that it was not getting a signal. When I unhooked the older Dell Flat screen the "Self Test" came up. I don't at this point believe it is a monitor issue. I've taken the maching home and cleaned it out (filthy does not even begin to describe the "felt" that was inside!)

What is the next step?

Since you were working inside the case i would say the next step would be to remove all cards one by one and re-seat them...
Then do the same with the RAM sticks.

Since you were working inside the case i would say the next step would be to remove all cards one by one and re-seat them...
Then do the same with the RAM sticks.

I dislodged the big stuff with an "air can" I did use a vaccum to get all the loose stuff out. I didn't hit anything on the inside with the tube. I take it this is a serious "No No!" The vacumm was mainly used to suck the dust build up that was around the plugs and jacks.

The problem with a vacuum is they generate tremendous amounds of static...definitely not a good thing around sensitive electronic components.

Try what's been suggested and let us know.

It's a bit early to panic yet...Rogger that. Let me see what I can do and I'll get back to you with the results...10 - 4.
