Solve : Layout change for Computer viruses and spyware?

Answer»

I would like to thank you too, EF.

I had a lot of free time while my computer was in malware assistance (waiting for it to come back up so I could start USING it again), so I spent some time looking at your blog site and saw that you are also involved in malware assistance at other sites, so i know that you are quite busy in what can only be a labor of love.

I truly appreciate the help.

I agree with the need to restructure the forum. Option #1 looks the best. Allan has some good ideas too, but something to keep the security questions separated from the malware help is good. News might go as a temporary sticky at the top of the general questions section.I voted #1 like everyone else.  Heh.  As for a news section, I personally don't see much need for it.  Malware news rarely gets posted as it is, so I don't think it would see much use.  If used regularly, I expect it would probably just be full of threat warnings and whatnot, which usually tend to make people unnecessarily paranoid.  I'm not against a news section, but I'm also not for it.  As long as we get the proposed child boards, I'll be happy.Right. I think the real important security news is limited to things like ADVANCES in the methods of malware production and detection/removal, major changes in anti-malware software, seminar results, annual detection score ratings, law-enforcement alerts, and articles by experts.Okay, just so you guys understand, here is an excerpt of topics from the last 5 days from our SECURITY NEWS sub forum. Again, this is only FIVE days worth. I'm posting this so you can see that if you choose to post security news, there's enough to keep a sub-forum busy.

I can see this is a forum I need to start watching. Just looking at topic heads shows some things I have been wanting to know more about.Another vote for #1.  If adopted, I think the Main forum link title should be changed to reflect the content of both child boards.  A Main forum link title of Computer viruses and spyware is basically the same as the child board title Virus and spyware removal.    Quote from: Allan on February 22, 2010, 07:43:23 AM

USAGE NOTE   The word forte,  coming from French fort, should properly be pronounced with one syllable, like the English word fort. Common usage, however, prefers the two-syllable pronunciation, (fôr'tā'), which has been influenced possibly by the music term forte borrowed from Italian. Speakers who are aware of the origin of the word may wish to continue to pronounce it as one syllable but at a risk of puzzling their listeners.

Solve : March monthly poll - What type of display are you using??

Answer»

Quote from: soybean on March 17, 2010, 01:30:25 PM

Actually, if I had a 24" monitor, I think I might no longer see much need for dual monitors.  I've never used a monitor that large but I would think that size screen has enough space to have two windows open side-by-side and achieve somewhat the same advantage as two smaller monitors, especially if those two monitors are 17".

I somewhat agree..... I've got one 24" monitor on my Internet computer, and it's plenty. I usually only have Firefox and Outlook open with a couple instances of explorer open in the background in case I need them. Firefox and Outlook are side by side with a little overlap. On the other hand, with my development computer, I would hate to have to get by with only one monitor. Sometimes I do wish I had two 24" monitors instead of the two 22" monitors I have, to give me a higher resolution and more real estate.i use the projector when i get to our villa .in the night and it is
very cool22" LCD monitor for me. Not HD, but still good anyway  22" Digimate wide screen LCD monitor Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 02, 2010, 12:50:24 AM
Desktop: 19" 1440x900 LCD
laptop(TOSHIBA L300): 15.4" 1280x800
older laptops- 800x600(passive matrix (=washed out) and 640x480(active matrix)

Those are incredibly low resolutions, aren't they? At least for a 19" I would get MINIMUM 1280x1048 (or something), LIKE I have. People nowadays have 3448x2978 res'.. it's nuts, but it's very good for programming. I can't imagine programming on a 640x480. The scrollwork would be nuts..

I had to work in 640x480x4bpp (16 colors) on my 486 with 24MB of RAM... and this was running windows 98 and Visual Studio 6. It worked OK, I suppose. When I got my K6-2 (and after a while, finally did my first ever install of windows 95 or higher) it automatically detected the ATI rage pro that was in the machine and installed the drivers (this was really a pleasant surprise) and I was able to use 1024x768, which I considered mega-high resolution at the time. (I still consider it rather high, certainly workable, depending on the program). The monitors I was using were crap though. most of them couldn't even go higher then 1024x768 anyway. This LCD was the first monitor I got that was capable of anything higher (well, without threatening to explode or giving out a constant, loud tortured scream).

Also, the LCD was a gift a few Christmases ago... (or maybe a birthday present, can't remember), and considering the tech skills of the gifter it was a really good choice.

I haven't had any issues with screen real-estate in any of my development; scripting in editpadpro, VB6 and Visual Studio 2008 get along with the size just fine.

Also: at least one thing can be said for smaller resolutions & programming- it makes you write shorter code or break things up into procedures, which is a good thing in the long run; certainly not something to use low resolutions for on purpose, though.  Hi i'm using a acer #AL1716W, good enough for me.Hi. I was satisfied with my 17" LG  CRT Flat Screen until I had occasion to work on a neighbors system which includes a 22" ACER LCD. I had lots of work on that PC so I was going there off and on for quite a while. After using that monitor it didn't take long until I was looking for something similar. I ended up purchasing a 22" Samsung LCD. Nice monitor, just love it. Also, it's easier on the eyes(they ain't what they used to be), plus the added space on my desktop is a real bonus too.
The old dependable LG will go in my storage shed where I have an old DELL PC set up that I use to send music to my work shop/garage. (Too much sawdust etc. in the work shop for the system so I PUMP the music over).

Anyway,as an added note, here's the only problem that my Samsung created: I like my LCD monitor so much that I became unsatisfied with my 27" Hitachi CRT TV, so I went and purchased a 47" LG LCD TV.

I guess the moral of this(if there is one?) is, if you're satisfied using a CRT monitor, stick with it as long as you can.  It just may SAVE you a lot of cash.    I'm using a Samsung PN50A550 50" plasma. It's driven by an EVGA 9800GTXSSC Special Edition video card. The connection is DVI to HDMI. Rez in 1920x1080 60Hz. It's awesome for games and movies! Do you mean putting a simple cover on the keyboard when it's not being used or a cover that's formed to be a permanent cover and left on during use?  I've seen the latter in car REPAIR SHOPS where workers with dirty HANDS need to use a keyboard.  Without those covers, those KEYBOARDS would probably not survive very long.http://www.compucover.com/you can clean it by the pump that is used for bicycle. Hmm..
I've never considered that option before. Seems like it  would have to be a two man operation - one pumping while the other holds the hose.

Solve : July monthly poll - How do you keep track of your passwords??

Answer»

I put the password on 3 X 5 index card along with the subject name.
I file these in a Alphabetic  tabbed card box by subject.
Those that I use often are copied to a SHEET of paper made readily available
Frank CI only have about 14 passwords I recycle...5 of them much more frequently than the others.
Of these 14, only 2 of them are of any noticeable LENGTH, and those 2 don't differ by much.
So keeping them all in my head isn't too difficult...the only problem comes when I try to access an account I have not used very many times.

I find that old wep keys are rather useful to tack onto passwords in a pinch.  HI GUYS!    Listen, try "KeyPass" for storing all your passwords and also your 'gizmo' keys and serial numbers as well.     It is a real great little program this is!

OK, If you have a lot of passwords it will take a little time to properly SET up, but once you have caught up, it is simple to keep on top of!

I wouldn't be without id fellas!      Well with the end of the MONTH it looks like the majority of those who voted chose the option that they always use the same password. As I'm sure most realize using the same password is definitely a security risk, if you voted for this option at the very least I'd recommend considering using at least two passwords. One for sites you're not that concerned about and a more secure password for sites like your banking and e-mail.

The AUGUST monthly poll has been posted. Feel free to put in your vote about what type of mouse you use with your computer.

i Dont keep a password Quote from: johngetter on August 02, 2010, 12:22:49 PM

i Dont keep a password
What do you mean?  You don't use any sites that require a password?  Or, you memorize all passwords?  Memorizing may be feasible for a small number of passwords but, for those of us who use many websites and/or computer applications which require a password, memorization simply is not a feasible option unless you use the same password for everything, and that's a very bad way to do it.

Solve : The Social Network?

Answer»

I thought the movie was okay. Not great, just okay. I LIKE Facebook. I know it gets trashed a lot by critics but people still keep using it. As with any thing in the virtual world, you have to be careful what info you put in there. I believe the social networks are a permanent part of our life and will only continue to grow. Quote from: BC_Programmer on November 11, 2010, 05:51:25 AM

And the biggest thing I can't stand about Facebook and the entire concept of Social Networking?

It's a gigantic waste of time. So many people spend HOURS on the bloody thing each day- and why? What do they get in return? This is what confuses me, as I just noted, those hours spent on facebook tweaking your profile and playing the various facebook games and so forth essentially constitutes free content for the site to put ads on. That's pretty much all facebook is, really; and this is shared by many social networking sites. You can't just have pages filled with ads, you need some content. It's a free content generator. for them to frame with ads. (which even in the last bit while I had a FB account was getting worse).

Before I even joined facebook, I was under the impression that all social networking was effectively pointless. After using it, my opinion has only been further enhanced in that sense.  What I see as pointless, is social networking for the sake of social networking. That is what facebook is.

Take.... oh I don't know- Flickr. Flickr is about photos (See, already has +1 on facebook, since it's not pointless); but, you can establish relationships with other users of the site, who are described as "Contacts" (see, avoids the f-word!). The positive of this is that you can have a single view where you can see photos recently uploaded by your contacts. You can also choose to determine individual Contacts as being "Friends" or "Family" (to be fair, I think facebook has something to this affect, but I can't remember) you can then share individual photos and albums with no one, with everyone, just with your Contacts, or just with Friends and/or Family. The distinction between Contacts, Friends, and Family is very helpful, I think—it gives you a much more sophisticated level of control over your privacy. On Facebook, someone is a Friend, or they're not. There's no in-between. (again, my info might be out-dated on that).

Clearly though, my point here is that Flickr has a Central goal; to share photos. The Social networking stuff is extra; you can choose to engage in it or not. Facebook, on the other hand- what's the point of it? Some have told me it's so you can "reconnect with people you've lost touch with" And to a degree I can understand that. But the thing is you add them as a friend, they are all "OMG it's been so long" etc you have a short conversation, and that's it. maybe every few months you exchange a few words, and you realize that the reason you lost touch was because your interests had forked away from each other, or something along those lines. (this is taken from personal experience, YMMV of course). Basically, the whole "reconnect with people you've lost touch with" is an admirable goal until you realize that obviously you lost touch with them for a reason; if it was really important to have kept in touch, you would have. It's not like exchanging E-mails or IMs or something are  that difficult. In any case, Facebook's real purpose is- of course, Social networking. I find it comical that Facebook, despite the fact that it's sole purpose is to aid your relationships with people, doesn't even have the same "relationship MANAGEMENT" that Flickr has (again, info may be outdated), where the social networking is (or was) secondary.

For some people that never go anywhere and are around most of their friends most of the time I could see where social networking could be considered a waste of time.

However for people like me that travel a lot and are away from friends and family for over half the year social networking has helped to keep us in touch in one central place. My wife post pics of my kids and the things they do while I am away so that i can see what is going on at home and have some clue as to what is happening in my kids lives and our other friends and family can also enjoy getting to see these.  If we have something that we need or want to tell most people we are close to we can do it in one place. Facebook has TURNED out to be a great place for us to share and spread information thru out our family.

Social networking does have it's benefits and it doesn't have to be focused around one thing like Flickr. The point behind social networking is you can make it into what you want and build your network around your life. You don't see people sitting in coffee shops having a cup of brew and wanting to kick people out because they are talking about cars instead of coffee. After all they are sitting in a coffee shop so how dare any one discuss any thing other then coffee while there.

I can see your point on the status updates and do think it is a little bit ridiculous how often some people tend to update their statuses and what they put there.

As to the games on facebook. I see people playing them as being no different then a person sitting at their computers playing solitaire. It is just these games are on a social network so you can involve other people if you want to where as solitaire you play alone.I saw it shortly after it came out and it was OK at best.  It was more like a fake documentary then a flashy movie or true documentary.  I would wait for the DVD and watch from the comfort of your own home.  The back story is interesting but not at all what it was hyped up to be.

Farmville=harvest moon, for example.
And... that is simply sad. Although I know plenty of other people who seem to have this "addicted to facebook thing"... personally I've never understood what there is to get addicted to.

You would if you had friends and not a lot of time to waste.  I'm not actually insulting you... I don't have any friends, but I think facebook is useful for people with particular lifestyles.I have friends, and I really enjoy getting together with one or more of them for meals, drinks, etc, or a visit to the races, or lots of other things. What I don't enjoy is reading a load of idiotic self obsessed tripe from people I met at work 10 years ago or once knew.  Quote from: jim0watkins on November 16, 2010, 12:02:29 PM
You would if you had friends and not a lot of time to waste.

Your reasoning is non-sequitur and based on assumptions. You're presuming that since I don't use facebook, that I don't have any friends, and therefore that is why I don't understand what there is to get addicted to. Gotta love the pattern "insult.... I'm not actually insulting you" of course not, your making hand-wavy generalizations about my social life without any basis in fact and asserting they are true. No, of course that's not insulting. It's like if I said "your Mother is fat. I'm not actually insulting you, my mother is  fat too" or something.

First, let's go with your assumption that I don't have any friends. Why would "having friends" in that case reveal to me how it is addicting?

Again, I an account. I had a number of friends, (both real and those that decided that since we both like a certain cereal we should be friends) and it was pointless. Aside from the fact that several of my friends weren't on facebook at all, For the most part when I wanted to contact them I didn't waste my time logging into facebook, I either phoned them, or more often, either e-mailed them or IM'd them.  Thing is, I just didn't have time to maintain what was essentially excess baggage; I didn't have time to maintain and keep it up to date, so I had a facebookectemy and had the vestigial membership removed.

What I don't get is how, with Phones, cellphones, Instant messaging, E-mail, and so forth, people seem to think that facebook, and social networking in particular, is "revolutionary" and there is nothing like it. Social Networking is like a niche in an open field.Biggest waste of time i've seen in 20 years...

+1 insightfulI do use Facebook as part of my social life.. but as 'a part' of my social life. It is true that I have reconnected with a LOT of old friends that I had not seen for years, and yes we did have that one off conversation and just the odd bits here and there. But that does not seem reason to delete them from my friends list.

I also used to play a few of the games but as bc said they are so generic and there only purpose is to get you to come back as much as possible to click a few 'collect', 'fight' or help buttons. This is not so you get a sense of enjoyment/fulfilment out of the game but so they get 'hits' on there ad banners. Hence I no longer play them.

I must admit though when i was young I moved to south Manchester from east Manchester and I lost touch with people I went to primary school/high school. After connecting back on facebook I have been back to see them, *censored* they even came out in town for my last birthday, so in that sense it worked for me.

As far as the film goes, I did watch it and quite enjoyed it. I think the reason I thought it was OK was because I left the idea that it was a true story at the door and just watched it as a film about some guy's starting a website and the internal struggle... to be fair I never really thought about the website itself throughout the film unless it was SPECIFICALLY referenced.

Just my humble spin on things.

You should read  "Masters of Doom" it's very similar in many ways; there is a lot of internal tension among the employees, and so forth. words can't really do it justice. I've read it three times now.

I have not seen the movie (I have not heard of it until I read this topic) But I think it would be interesting to watch - see how this whole thing started.

I am not on Facebook, or MXIT or Twitter - if you want to talk to someone phone them, or email them. But I really couldn't care what you are doing every 5 seconds of the day.
I do love Google though, but that's for getting useful information. And when I am on holiday you wont see me sitting on the beach with my laptop so I can check who has updated their status, I'm much more concerned with real things - like landing the big fish I have on the other end of my line...  Quote from: lau on November 16, 2010, 11:49:45 PM

Ordered from waterstones. Look forward to reading it. I'm inclined to think some of the social networking craze is a fad that may fade over time, so declaring it a huge phenomenal success may be a premature conclusion.  I have a facebook account but, after the initial novelty wore off, it has become less interesting for me than it was in the beginning.  The most positive aspect of using it has been getting in contact with some classmates from high school.  But, even there, it hasn't been all positive.  One female classmate seems to have nothing else to do than be on facebook and play FarmVille and maybe some other games.  I don't have time for that and I don't like seeing one person's activity splattered over my facebook page.  So, I used the Hide option to hide her activity from being displayed on my page.

I recall my early impression of facebook being a situation when facebook users seemed to just accumulate facebook "friends" for the sake of running up their friend count.  Yet, these "friends" were often people they had never met in person.  That's rather meaningless, IMO.

Here's an interesting article about Bill Gates decision to quit facebook: Bill Gates quits Facebook over 'too many friends'

CompTIA A + ...you'll be done in 3o minutes... Quote from: DaveLembke on April 24, 2015, 12:28:31 PM

Congrats ... the more the better. Do you have an employer who is covering any of the costs or are you paying all out of pocket for these?

The few that i have I was able to get my employer to pay my way which was sweet. I would have gotten more if they would have paid for more, but they only had a choice few that they wanted me to get. I really wanted the Cisco certs etc.

They're covering the books and exams so far - the MTA exams have cost £91 each and the books were roughly £60 (2 books, the MS one is rubbish by the way) so approx £600 so far.  If I was paying myself I would probably not have bothered with the MTA exams as they're not hugely recognised, I would however have still bought the Sybex books as they're not expensive and I have learnt things from them, to the point I'm keeping them for reference whereas I'll be selling the MS books on.  In other words I don't think the ROI is there, on the other hand though I do now have MCP status which has to be worth something.
They've said they will pay for whatever exams I want to do, within reason, which is why I'm starting at the bottom and working up for a broader coverage.  If I was paying my own way I'd have likely started studying for an MCSA certification instead, which would take me a lot longer but would be worth a lot more by itself.  While I'm here, I may as well get what I can - they sure get whatever they can out of me!

CompTIA A + ...you'll be done in 3o minutes...

I passed the old exam fairly easily so I hope this should be more of a refresher...I've heard the exam is more modern these days so there should be less memorisation of obscure and obsolete cables and standards required.  "Should" being the key word...I'll see what it looks like when my books arrive.

I'll post later with the materials I used to study for each of the MTA exams in case anyone else might find it useful in the future, as well as a quick roundup of how I felt the exams went in terms of questions and content (without breaking the NDA of course).Finished my A+ on Tuesday, did the 220-801 last Monday and the 802 on Tuesday.  I found it much EASIER this time around, in part I'm sure because I have a lot more experience but to me the exam was also very different and a lot more relevant to the real world.  I don't think I had any questions on pinouts of legacy connectors which was nice.  I don't want to go into too much detail and break the NDA so I'll probably stop there.  I took a bit longer to do this exam purely because I had to wait for a convenient time, I was ready for it weeks ago.
Network+ is next on my list, I was going to go for Server+ but there aren't any relevant study materials for some reason, other than a Kindle BOOK which gets great reviews but I don't do Kindle.I'm trying for an MSCA:Server 2012 and am planning on taking the first exam next month. I've been using CBT Nuggets for the training (my work pays for training and *passed* exams), and part of the subscription pays for practice exams.
I took the practice exam a couple weeks ago and got a whopping 40%! I guess I know where to focus my studies, anyway. The parts that got me is the Microsoft technology that nobody uses. (I failed most of the teredo server stuff and routing/remote access.)
But there are some other technologies that I learned about and am excited to start using. DSC (Desired State Configuration) will be the first on my list to implement on my network.
I was a bit surprised by how much powershell you are required to know for the MSCA. Every aspect of Windows Server can use powershell in some way and Microsoft really wants you to know how to do it. So I've been learning powershell and am loving it. Makes stuff so much easier once you know the commands and how to use them and pipe them.

Calum, how was the MTA test? what format was it? was it multiple choice? find the best answer? how much of the allowed time did it take for you to finish?
I thought about doing an MTA cert, but was talked out of it because it's not as valuable as the MSCA. But I am still considering it because it would be easy and nothing motivates you to study like passing an exam.Yeah, I've heard the MCSA exams feature a lot of Powershell, makes sense as MS are really pushing that way these days.
The MTA exams are mostly multiple choice, with some drag and drop fill in the blank type questions (e.g. what word fits best in the sentence), and some where you match terms to their meanings, that sort of thing.  I think they took me between 15 and 30 minutes each to finish, and that was with me checking each question carefully twice, so not very long.  I scored around 95% on each exam, too.
As you say, the MTA isn't anywhere near as valuable as the MCSA as it's nowhere near as difficult, but if you're not going to have to pay for the tests then I think it could be a decent primer to get you into the swing of the MS exams - 98-365, Server Admin Fundamentals, is probably the one to go for.  There's almost no Powershell covered on the MTAs I have done, just the basics of what Powershell is and the basic syntax of a command.By the way, I forgot to mention this but it may be useful for you, michaewlewis, and anyone else interested in the MTA exams - if you join the CSTA (Computer Science Teacher's Association) you should get a voucher for a free MTA exam and a HP ATA exam, at least I did though my offers expired and I'm not sure if they were valid outside the US anyway.  There's no fee and no prerequisites to join the CSTA and there are other benefits available (mostly US-focused so I can't recall full details).  One other major perk is you'll have the option to become a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) fee-free which INCLUDES (directly quoting from a post elsewhere which I'll link below) "include Free access to Safari, books24x7, and skillsoft. Email forwarding and filtering through postini with an acm.org email, access to their digital library and tri-weekly news emails keeping you up to date" so well worth joining up!
Info above is in part copied from this incredibly useful post over on TechExams.net - http://www.techexams.net/forums/general-certification/94746-free-reduced-certifications-free-reduced-training.htmlSo, haven't updated here in a while...I started a new job in August last year, I had been studying to take the CompTIA Network+ but left my last job before I took the exam and have since been too busy to brush up and go take it.  It's still in my plan though, not least because it'll renew my A+.
I've had a change of plan and I'm shortly going to start studying for the Microsoft 70-695 exam, "Deploying Windows Desktops and Enterprise Applications".  This is basically because I'm doing a LOT of deployment work at the minute, and essentially my new employer feels that me taking this exam is a lot more relevant than me going ahead with, say, Network+, although I will probably come back to that at some point.
This exam doesn't give me a certification in itself, it's more to validate my knowledge to support the work I'm currently doing.  Interestingly, the exam has been updated from focusing on MDT 2013 and Windows 8.1, to include Windows 10 - however the study materials haven't.  I think a lot of home labbing will be required so that I can be confident of the differences between deploying 8.1 and 10 and Office 2013/2016.You will be fine...but brushup is a good idea...
That being ststed...when you pass then you can talk your employer into payin for and achieving the Network + Certs...If you're doing a lot of system deployments, make sure you look at Windows Deployment Services. I had a bit of a rocky start with it, but recently was able to upgrade 35 systems, with all of the apps preinstalled, in two weeks time and still had time for my normal tasks.

I still haven't taken any of my cert tests yet.  I took two practice tests and completely bombed both of them for the MS 70-410. Now I'm considering going for a CCNA instead because I randomly (no studying) took one of those practice tests and got a 65%. Maybe with a little studying, I could pass it.....
Yeah, we're working with WDS and MDT 2012 at the minute, the deployment system was set up by someone who was working his notice period about 2 years ago so it's...not the best, shall we say.  I've spent a few months fixing various bugs and getting a handle on the little quirks of our setup, next on the list is rebuilding all of our deployment images, followed by a round of improvements to the system to help ease the burden on our team.  I'm hoping to implement some helpful little things like getting notifications when a build has finished deploying, updating the BIOS during the task sequence, and scripting a lot of the management side of things so that it's easier for others to manage.  Regarding the images themselves, it's all about striking a balance between flexibility/easy of management, and the total time taken to deploy a system.  We deploy "fat" images here with most applications integrated, we can do this pretty easily because most of our software is quite static but my BIGGEST frustration is that we can't include Office as, bizarrely, we license it per system with an OEM license, so we can't just deploy the latest and we have no set standard, just whatever that particular machine shipped with.  I do have an idea to make the best of this but it'll take some time to set this up.

I had some knowledge of WDS etc from my last job, we used MDT and WDS when I started but then implemented ConfigMgr - although that's a lot more fully featured, the deployment and task sequence side of it is very similar to MDT, ConfigMgr just has some more bells and whistles but MDT is a lot more capable than I initially thought.  I've learned a lot from this and I'm looking forward to upgrading to MDT 2013 at last, too, which will be needed for when we eventually start deploying Windows 10 - that's mostly waiting on a lot of other upgrades though for compatibility.

I think deployment is a valuable skill to have and I'm surprised nobody at my work has focused on it a little more up until now.  The way I see it is how can you hope to have any kind of consistent environment if your deployments aren't up to scratch?  It's imperative to start from a known good position otherwise you're fighting a losing battle and it creates more work for everyone.

Back to the topic at hand...did you use any other materials than CBT Nuggets to study for the 70-410?  I really struggle with online materials, videos and such, I find I just don't retain the information, so I've been going for study books.  I see there are several resources for the 70-410 exam - there's one by Craig Zacker that has some pretty lacklustre reviews, but there's a weighty tome by Dan Poulton that looks more promising, and a combined 70-410/411/412/417 book by William Panek which also looks good.  I don't own any of these and I haven't read them so I'm not speaking from personal experience, just reviews and feedback from other forums.  They're around £30-40 so not massively expensive, it might be worth investing in one to supplement your other studies if you're not already book-studying.  Even if you don't read it all cover to cover, it might help to read through any sections you struggled with on the practice tests just to get a different perspective on things.  I know I struggled to grasp subnetting for ages, I used a different resource and it just clicked for me, maybe it'll be the same for you

Having said that, the CCNA is also a pretty useful cert to have, although obviously it's a different path to the MCSA.  There's also the CCENT below the CCNA which might be a good introduction, I don't know how familiar you are with the cert paths so forgive me if I'm teaching you to suck eggs!  I also don't know how au fait you are with the Cisco side of things, if you're already pretty good then it's probably worth going straight for the CCNA.Yeah, you've got a good point. I read through both of the CCNA books, so that might be why I'm better with Cisco than MS. I still don't quite understand ip ADDRESS to binary conversion, though. Partly because I don't see the point. Why do it yourself when the computer does it for you?
Also, there is a bunch of stuff with Microsoft 70-410 that I don't see myself using at my current job. It's a lot easier to learn stuff that you think you might actually use. I'm pretty good at the hyper-v/vmm stuff because I've built my hyper-v infrastructure from scratch. I haven't had any desire to use Windows for an NPS server.
Yeah, it's definitely easier to learn by being hands-on with stuff, I have a VM lab environment but I'm planning to expand this to a dedicated box very shortly to assist with future certification stuff as well as general messing around.  I'm still frustrated that Technet subscriptions got taken down, I understand the reasons but it leaves a huge gap as I can't afford an MSDN subscription and there isn't a downloadable trial of everything that I may want to set up.

As for IP address to binary conversion, I always saw that as more of a learning aid than anything else, it's a way to easily write the subnet mask down and visualize it to see if a certain IP address "fits" in that subnet or not.  I agree it seems counter-intuitive, though.

Solve : adding to the Environment Variables?

Answer»

Hi,

I need to ADD a path to environment variable. However, it appears not to pick up on the new path.

The path should be,
%SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adaptec Shared\System;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\BINN;C:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322

But it only SHOWS up
%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adaptec Shared\System;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\BINN

The additional variable is
C:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322

But it does not show up that added line when I run SET in the command window.

What am I doing WRONG? How can I fix it?

Thanks.

Solve : TIF Folder?

Answer»

Actually, I don't know if this should be here or under INTERNET Explorer. Since it's in Windows, guess I'll try here.

For some reason, the format has changed in my Temp Internet Files folder. It used to SHOW all the usual icons for cookies, pages visited, etc. Now, all I get is a kind of grayed-out icon for desktop and a folder titled Content IE5 (I recently changed to IE6, by the way).

When I open the Content IE5 folder (from TIF or through Windows Explorer), it shows 8 folders, and all of them are empty. It also has the the index.dat icon, and the same grayed-out desktop icon as in the MAIN TIF folder. Can anyone shed some light on this and how to restore the folder to the way it used to be?
what o/s is it normally a grayed out folder means that it was hidden?i would SCAN for virus/worm etc ?also maybe the upgrade to ie6 has cause this?

Solve : Network logging, possible??

Answer»
Received great help here a few weeks ago with problems with XP.  Now have a new question to ask.
Since we have 4 computers on the network here,  (3 are on XP home, one windows 98) is there any program that can monitor the kids computers?
At least with the time they stay ONLINE would be of major help.   Kids computers are the 98 and one XP home.
We are having the kids say that are not online "that much," but when we are gone from home and they are here,  ummmm   those are the only 2 computers that have "trouble."
One of the GIRLS will sooner or later tell on the other one, LOL,  but not for DAYS!!!
Hoping that theres a program that can be ran off the "main" computer, to limit the time on the other 2 computers.   Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
ohhh  btw,  hope this is posted in the correct catagory.Try this!
http://www.spyarsenal.com/familykeylogger/If you want to completely block your kids from 'net access while you're away you can change Internet Explorer to require it to connect to the 'net by proxy, then change the proxy address when you go out.  You could also physically disconnect your router/switch/hub from the mainline. Thanks for responding Thanhtq and Joleen.    Going to read about the keylogger program, and also THINKING about changing  the proxy address when we leave.

Most of the time it sets up as drive "d". Sometimes it sets up a drive "c".  When it calls itself drive "c", it will not let you format drive "c" as the primary drive.  What I did was to go back to fdisk, displayed the PARTITIONS (I usually assign 100% of drive to primary logical partition) to see what happened there. After I see that there is only one partition there, I exit fdisk.  Then without rebooting, at "A" prompt I format "c".  You have to format "c" before you can install the OS.  I'm having the same problem only this time i'm installing a second hard drive and the BIOS detects it but when i use fdisk to set partitions and drives it says "UNABLE to access drive 1" I have a WD caviar 40GB 7200RPM set as master and MAXTOR 20GB set as slave please help!!!!What type of OS do you install?
All the logical patitions are NTFS?

Any and all suggestions appreciated!  Thanks! GarnetBy formatting the C: you'll lose ALL your data on that partition.  Your computer will/should prompt you as to whether or not you want the partition formatted, deleted, etc.  What most people forget to do prior to a format is backup needed FILES like favorites, emails, and documents.  Once you format.. it's all gone.

I am trying to get a clean Hard Drive to start fresh, then INSTALL DOS and a Win OS.  no worry with back ups.   I've done small drives, "C"  being the only drive.  No need for partitions.  I need to know how to re-format a HD, partition into 4- C, D, E and F drives and prep it for re-install of DOS and a Win OS.
Info on partial format  is interesting of course!  Thanks so much, GarnetThere is a software PROGRAM CALL Partition Magic 8.0 which will allow you to do everything you want & more.
It's a great program but will set you back approx £40

see here - http://www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic/

PartitionMagic® allows you to resize, create, move, split, merge, undelete, and CONVERT partitions quickly and easily, without harming your data. The new File Browser allows you to move files from one partition to another regardless of partition type, step-by-step wizards allow you to view changes that will be made before applying them, and DataKeeper® provides automatic file backup. Includes BootMagic® which enables you to safely run multiple operating systems on the same computer.I've had mixed results with Partition Magic.  If the pc is fairly old, you should format anyway just to clean it out.  A format of once a year should be mandatory (more often if you do filesharing or testing).place a boot disk in the floppy drive and at the a:\>prompt) type format  c:--- so the command looks like this A:\>format c: notice the space after the word format  on screen writing will appear all files will be deleted or lost answer yes and look here for partitioning hard-drives>http://www.newlogic.co.uk/kbase/fdisk/page1.htmGarnet.....If I understand you........you have I drive (8gig)
partitioned as C,D,E,and F ......and you just want to reformat the partition called C. Then just follow the instructions that Merlin offered. Remember you just want to format the C portion so dont remove the existing partitions. You didnt say what operating system you will be putting on .

Solve : current problems (floppy drive, internet, etc)?

Answer»

Hi,

On the other computer, well, let's just say I didn't really use my common sense. I'll tell what happened. See, I was scanning for viruses and found some so I deleted some things. And one of those things was WIN.COM and few other vital things. Anyways, I fixed that part thanks to this computer because I made a rescue disk with WIN.COM and all the other things I've deleted.

Just two problems that I ended up with. The internet won't work, it's like there's no internet. (I am guessing that I may NEED an internet card, if it is, please do tell me that) and also. Floppy DRIVES, C drive, D, and E drives won't work. I tried inserting a floppy disk, and tried opening, but it says there is no floppy disk in the drive. similar happened with a cd in the E & D drive which won't think that there is a cd.

Anything that I can fix?  Thanks.are your drives detected in the bios?you have not mention the o/s or the pc make?and to have the internet you need a modem 56kor adsl aand if you are talking about a laptop you need an internet card?more info NEEDED.are your drives detected in the bios? I don't know how to check that.

and to have the internet you need a modem 56kor adsl I have cable router, which lets me on this computer for the internet. (thank GOODNESS)

Solve : I hate spyware!!?

Answer»

Good day to everyone. A couple of months AGO I noticed pyware problems in my PC so i down loaded ad-aware. Then I heard about a different kindo of spyware so i downloaded CWswhredder and it got RID of most of the hidden stuff. But since my computer has been a mess it has never fully recovered. SOmetimes I can't run Java sripts but sometimes i can. For example the bansith TEST at 2wire.com runs about half the times I try it. And chat room that require java, flash , etc won't run most of the time. I was thinking spending some money on more ram and a new videocard but i don'e want to spend the mopney for nothing if the problem keeps happening. Is there anyway to start my computer from scratch. Erase everything on it including the spyware. Thanks for your attention.Jose....You say you cant accesss chat rooms that require
java ........sometimes . So sometimes you can ........
Have you tried reinstalling your java.
http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp
If you want to "start over" as you put it, then format your hard drive ( that will remove everything). You will have to have access to all the application cds to reload them back......It will take awhile but your system will be clean again. It almost sounds like CWshredder MAY have taken out something your system needed.
Have you checked at.......
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
to make sure you have all the latest updates?

Hope this helps you.

dl65  Jose, I'm inclined to agree with dl65...you may have removed something you need. Also agree with reinstalling Java.

You ran AdAware, and that is good. There is one more thing you could do. Go to

http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip

Download HijackThis, then unzip it (usually unzips to C: Unzipped folder, which is fine). Run HijackThis (HJT), then click Save Log in the window it puts up. When it finishes (almost instant...very quick), it will leave a notepad window with the log (it's a long log). Highlight all of it, then save (ctrl+c) the whole log, then come back here to this thread and paste (ctrl+v) that log. It probably will give some clues as to what's going on with your system. Then watch here for more replies.

Best...sierradadSpyBot is also an excellent freeware to remove spyware.

Solve : can't access desktop/windows 98?

Answer»

Howdi folks,

If anybody here has any clues as to how to resolve this problem I would be gratefull.  I dowwnloaded a ZIP file which wouldn't open - one option was to open it apparently in DOS mode by agreeing to shut down all  programs currently running (note: I has allowed for this by changing the default settings). Anyway the computer went to this mode and I assume the unzip program went to work but again failed to open the zip file and left a rather detailed account of why it couldn't - concluding with an emphatic, 'so there!'  The problem is this paragraph has somehow ended up in the opening program i.e. the numbers/specifications you see flash by when you turn the  computer on and when the program hits this it stops and requests the user to hit any key to continue - which starts the entire process again ad nauseum.  I can hit delete to access set - up but the different configurations I have tried to resolve the problem have no effect.  Is there a way to access the desktop \windows again without rebooting the whole SYSTEM and losing all my files? From now on use WINZIP to open .zip files. It's a free download. But, put in your 98boot disk or start-up disk in your floppy drive, boot computer. You should have four options. Pick SafeMode, let computerload minimum drivers, find your SystemRestore or GoBack program to set the system "back" or before you load the zip file. If you don,t have or can't any luck, your only option is a clean uninstall of your 98 and reinstall. Sometimes best to start from scratch.  Thanks for your reply- i only had a 95 driver  so as i live in Thailand for baht 100 i got the 98 windows on 'special' - not that it did much good as the failed zip file of 'Rikki don't lose that number' (of all things) had apprently mutated into a virus according to the boot disc- anyway i found some invaluable info from some previous threads here  about msdos and plugged away for a night and a day to make head or tail of it - its pretty weird down in dos land! Well  the faq sheet and my situation finally meshed and i'm back in the saddle with the old PHILLIPS Leo hardly not knowing what hit it.

Cheers

Solve : Avast Anti-Virus Warning?

Answer»

While online earlier today, I got the Avast popup window at the bottom right of the screen saying there is a new version of Avast available, and do I want to install it. I told it yes, it downloaded and installed, then I let it reboot.

IMMEDIATELY, I started having problems. First it showed up in My Yahoo PAGE whenever I clicked a link to view a news item. The system froze (I could move the mouse pointer but nothing else WORKED....ctrl/alt/del wouldn't restart or do anything....had to do hard shutdowns). This happened about 4 TIMES before I realized it was AFTER I had installed the new Avast version. Same thing happened when I tried to access email (when ZONEALARM asked if I wanted Avast email scanner to access the net, it froze....had to do another hard shutdown).

Finally, I went offline and uninstalled Avast (from Control Panel), then reinstalled the original version from the setupeng install file from the original download. That earlier version is now running, and the problem is solved.

Apparently there is some conflict in this new version, because it is now running fine with the earlier version. Hope this helps someone else.

Best....sierradadGood one Sd, nice to let e'one know.  I use AVG myself and apart from their various update sites getting overloaded works fine. Never tried avast buit sounds like you did the right thing.Im using new Avast in XP with no probs so far.

Solve : GeForce 4 ti4600 Nightmare?

Answer»

First off if you’ve read the Nvidia Geforce4 MX 440 SE Video Card topic posted by janzy2001 then you will be familiar with my problem because it’s happening to me too.

System spec:
Windows Xp Pro edition +sp1
Pentium 3 1G
768 SD-RAM Pc-133
Sound Blaster PCI128
Old banged up network card
USB Expansion card
GeForce 4 Ti4600 - Creative Labs
CD -RW Drive 52-32-52 MSI
Old CD/DVD Drive
Old Floppy drive
40G Hard Drive don’t know much about either of these
17G hard drive
QDI (legend) Advanced 10T Motherboard
Apollo Pro 133T Chipset
Standard ATX power supply (400W)

I think that’s everything, if I forgot something please let me know.
Anyway as I said if you have read the other NVIDIA GeForce 4 post by janzy2001 then you basically know my problem.
Oh and before I begin I have to point out that I have had this card for the best part of two years and used the same install of windows xp pro with it during that time, and this problem has only started in the past few weeks.

If you haven’t ill EXPLAIN, while using the computer I am getting random blackouts, the screen flashes black and then a second or so later it APPEARS normal again. Most of the time this happens the original picture comes back as normal, but sometimes the image contains errors the screenshot shows this topic just after one of these blackouts, if you look you can see the similes are out of place. This is a simple error but sometimes there are major colour errors, large BLOBS of colour where there shouldn’t be (the kind of thing that happens when your graphics card is on the way out).

Further more, the problems are not only occurring during “desktop” use, I have massive problems when attempting to play games, does anyone have cs 1.6 with steam? Well if you do you know there is a counter strike splash screen before you have to find a server and start playing, most of the time I cannot get past the server lists, before even playing my display will freeze completely and no matter what I try the computer eventually restarts. The message I get from windows “Windows detect a possible device failure and had to restart” – or something similar.

This also happens with other games, some simply freeze and restart, others first show signs of graphic errors (those blobs of colour again) and can be exited all be it slowly, others will show errors freeze and after much keyboard hitting, just close.

So you know what’s going on, this is what  I’ve done to try and fix the problem. As usual the first thing I tried was to get the latest drivers for my video card, I got the latest version from the NVIDIA website 56.72 is it ? or something like that… this had no effect what so ever.

Second I tried reducing the quality settings for my card to see if this did anything… nothing happened

Next I tried reducing hardware acceleration, nothing happened

Although I’m not an expert with bios settings I am not afraid to mess around with things in there, so I changed to the AGP aperture size to 128 same as my card this had no effect, then I tried disabling the AGP 4X option, although my board supports it I’ve heard of problems begin caused by this being used, this at first seemed to fix the problem but then 2 and half hours later I had my first blackout so I’m going to say this had no effect.

At this point I was getting worried and annoyed, so I started hitting the monitor with the keyboard, while making me feel better this had no effect.

Next I checked all the cable connections, found them all to good, then I reset the monitor settings to the manufacturer defaults and even degaussed it, this didn’t do anything either.

Next I REMOVED and replaced the card several times to see if it was something to do with agp connection, this did nothing. I then got out some really old geforce 2 cards and put them in, to my horror the same blackouts started happening with both of these cards. I then thought it could be something to do with the chipset it self, and got out my old driver disc, installed the drivers I had and again this did nothing.

Finally ( I think) I decide that the only course of action left to take was a complete format, and reinstall of windows XP, this when completed seemed to solve the problem I went a good 4 hours without a single blackout but then they started to happen again seemingly after I installed all my office xp stuff and a few other programs.

At the moment im stumped and really need some out side help, this problem is making my brain hurt, so get your thinking caps on and give me some suggestions.

- thanks
Dave

Dave,  Well after reading your post I feel that I am not alone.  Not sure if this will ever get resolved.  Very strange.  I am at whits end and am totally annoyed at all of this.  Nvidia did not help me at all. Were your other cards all by the same manufacturer?  I am puzzled to the point that I would throw the stupid computer out of the window.    Well lets keep trying to find out.  If you do I am sure you will post it. I will keep checking your post to see what you have found out.  Thanks for your encouragement to know that I am not going nuts with this black and blinking screen.  Janzy

Solve : my CD-ROM drive isnt automatically running my game?

Answer»

Whenever I insert a GAME disc it is supposed to bring up a screen that gives me the option to install the game. It hasn't been doing that as of late. Every TIME I put my game, Day of Defeat, in the E: drive, I hear the drive loading, but then instead of bringing up the AUTORUN screen, it just stops loading. I have to go into My Computer and then go to E: drive to MAKE sure the computer read the disc. It always does read the disc, when I open the file that is labled Day Of Defeat ( E: ) it takes me to a screen with the option to setup Day Of Defeat. When I click setup, the E: drive starts loading again. After that, it just stops and locks up. I press Ctrl+Alt+Del and it says the program is not responding. Anyone know how I can get this game WORKING?is this winxp if so try this CONTROL panel/administrative tools/services/shell hardware detection/return this service to automatic. then type
start/run/regedit
and then search for this string
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet\Services\Cdrom
AutoRun = 1

Solve : Win95 Invalid Page Fault/Fatal Exception?

Answer»

I have an old computer on which I'm running Windows 95 and IE 5.5. I've had no problems with it until about a month ago when I started getting "INVALID PAGE
FAULTS in module " (usually - sometimes in KERNEL32.DLL). This happens 3 or 4 times and then I either get a Blue Screen "FATAL EXCEPTION 0E in VXD
VWIN32(04)" (usually) or the computer screen locks up and I need to do a restart for the PC. This happened when I tried to log on to my ISP (JUNO 5.0). Sometimes
if I ran my firewall (ZONE ALARM) I could bypass the page faults and get connected. However, eventually I would get the same page faults in IE and the PC
screen would then freeze up. This happens with other programs also. I haven't installed any new hardware or software before this started happening. Windows
booted up fine without any problems or errors happening.

I ran a virus check and found a couple of Trojans, which I cleaned out. The virus check now shows no problems. Talking with JUNO, they said it was a Windows
Internal Memory PROBLEM and suggested I re-install their program, which I did, along with re-installing Windows 95 itself and IE 5.5. I then did a SCANDISK and a DEFRAG on the disk. I've also done what was listed in the articles here on "How to fix invalid page faults" and "How to fix a fatal exception error". I've
disabled Window's handling of the virtual memory and set it to 3 times my RAM. I've run MEMTEST86 for 21 hours to test the RAM and it found no errors. The
problem still happens, but now more frequently, and I can not bypass it anymore by running the firewall. Also, now at the end of the startup, I am getting the invalid page fault/fatal exceptions in loadwc.exe and/or explorer.exe.

When I start in SAFE MODE, I can run programs with no problems (but can't logon to the interned because there is no modem in SAFE MODE). If I run "Step-by-Step Confirmation" and reply yes to start Windows GUI and Load Windows Drivers, I also get the page faults/fatal exception messages. If I do not load Windows Drivers, it comes up in Safe Mode. It looks like something is messed up when it loads the Windows Drivers. Is there some way I can further isolate which Driver(s) may be causing the problem? I've tried doing Refresh for each device in Device Manager, but this hasn't done any good.
scan again for viruses>http://housecall.trendmicro.com/  this may have caused your problems?>http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=242191Thanks for replying Merlin. I can't logon to the internet to do an online scan for viruses with Trend Micro. I did re-run McAfee Virus Scan on my computer again and it came up with no infected files. I also checked the Microsoft article but don't think the MTX virus applies because of the above and I couldn't find any MTX files on my computer. From reading the articles, I think my virtual memory (I presume this is the swap file) is getting corrupted, but I don't know by what or how.
I think it is when Windows drivers are loaded, as when I don't load these I don't get the page faults. Any ideas of how I could further diagnose this problem would be
appreciated.after a re-read my guess is that zone alarm maybe causing this disable it and try ?a link on >http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;150314&Product=w95Zone Alarm doesn't start automatically at startup. The page faults occur with or without ZA active. It used to be that with ZA active I could bypass the page faults, but since reinstalling Windows95 and IE5.5, this no longer works - I get the Fatal Exception message all the time after bypassing the page fault messages. I've also disabled all the programs that used to start at startup. I've looked at all the Micorsoft articles and they don't seem to apply in this case.  That's how I  narrowed it down to when loading the windows drivers in a clean BOOT I found that it occurs; when not loading the drivers, it doesn't occur, but then I can only do a limited amount on the computer as the drivers needed are not present. I need to know how to narrow it down further to find which driver or drivers are causing the problem.do you wish to try this>http://www.majorgeeks.com/download122.htmlI tried installing Winsafe, but Setup said it couldn't find MSVBVM50.DLL. I have Visual Basic 6.0 installed. Is there a VB 6.0 version of this anywhere?http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;190536If I install the Windows Library Update I will back level
the files on my computer it updates. For every file it lists I have later versions of them installed, which should have the fixes this update has. I don't think I have any problem with VB 6.0, as I've had it for about 3 years and the programs that use it work OK (they don't get the page faults I get it some other programs).  I appreciate the time you are taking to help me. I think the problem lies somewhere in the virtual memory area and I have no idea on how to trouble shoot this.

Solve : D Drive, Cd Rom Drive Error?

Answer»

My CD Rom Drive, (D Drive) Is not working. Evertime I put a cd (any kind) It will blink a little cd icon by the mouse pointer, and it will blink maybe like 3 or 4 times, and then nothing. When I try to run the program from the start menu, I get this error:
D:\ is not accessible.
The request could not be PERFORMED because of an I/O device error.
I have no idea what to do. I don't know very MUCH about computers, but I have been reading site, and all they say is *censored* about cleaning, the drive, and checking some kind of cables. I have no idea about any kind of cables connected to anything about the computer. I have been trying to install a couple programs. Roxio Easy Media Creator 7. One thing, is that sometimes my cd drive does work. HARDLY ever. When it does, I find I have to hold the cd drive door in for it to work. But the last time, it stopped in the middle of the INSTALLATION, and now it won't install. I looked in the add or REMOVE programs list, and it doesn't show up, so I won't be able to uninstall it and start all over again. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!
