Solve : OS/Beer?

Answer»

I can't resist the occasional joke: If OS's were beers:

DOS Beer -- Requires you to use your own can opener, and requires you to read the directions carefully before opening the can. Originally only CAME in an 8-oz. can, but now comes in a 16-oz. can. However, the can is divided into 8 compartments of 2 oz. each, which have to be accessed separately. Soon to be discontinued, although a lot of PEOPLE are going to keep drinking it after it's no longer available.

Mac Beer -- At first, came only a 16-oz. can, but now comes in a 32-oz. can. Considered by many to be a "light" beer. All the cans look identical. When you take one from the fridge, it opens itself. The ingredients list is not on the can. If you call to ask about the ingredients, you are told that "you don't NEED to know." A notice on the side reminds you to drag your empties to the trashcan.

Windows 3.1 Beer -- The world's most popular. Comes in a 16-oz. can that looks a lot like Mac Beer's. Requires that you already own a DOS Beer. Claims that it allows you to drink several DOS Beers simultaneously, but in reality you can only drink a few of them, very slowly, especially slowly if you are drinking the Windows Beer at the same time. Sometimes, for apparently no reason, a can of Windows Beer will explode when you OPEN it.

OS/2 Beer -- Comes in a 32-oz can. Does allow you to drink several DOS Beers simultaneously. Allows you to drink Windows 3.1 Beer simultaneously too, but somewhat slower. Advertises that its cans won't explode when you open them, even if you shake them up. You never really see anyone drinking OS/2 Beer, but the manufacturer (International Beer Manufacturing) claims that 9 million six-packs have been sold.

Windows 95 Beer -- You can't buy it yet, but a lot of people have taste-tested it and claim it's wonderful. The can looks a lot like Mac Beer's can, but tastes more like Windows 3.1 Beer. It comes in 32-oz. cans, but when you look inside, the cans only have 16 oz. of beer in them. Most people will probably keep drinking Windows 3.1 Beer until their friends try Windows 95 Beer and say they like it. The ingredients list, when you look at the small print, has some of the same ingredients that COME in DOS beer, even though the manufacturer claims that this is an entirely new brew.

Windows NT Beer -- Comes in 32-oz. cans, but you can only buy it by the truckload. This causes most people to have to go out and buy bigger refrigerators. The can looks just like Windows 3.1 Beer's, but the company promises to change the can to look just like Windows 95 Beer's - after Windows 95 beer starts shipping. Touted as an "industrial strength" beer, and suggested only for use in bars.

Unix Beer -- Comes in several different brands, in cans ranging from 8 oz. to 64 oz. Drinkers of Unix Beer display fierce brand loyalty, even though they claim that all the different brands taste almost identical. Sometimes the pop-tops break off when you try to open them, so you have to have your own can opener around for those occasions, in which case you either need a complete set of instructions, or a friend who has been drinking Unix Beer for several years.

AmigaDOS Beer -- The company has gone out of business, but their recipe has been picked up by some weird German company, so now this beer will be an import. This beer never really sold very well because the original manufacturer didn't understand marketing. Like Unix Beer, AmigaDOS Beer fans are an extremely loyal and loud group. It originally came in a 16-oz. can, but now comes in 32-oz. cans too. When this can was originally introduced, it appeared flashy and colorful, but the design hasn't changed much over the years, so it appears dated now. Critics of this beer claim that it is only meant for watching TV anyway.

VMS Beer -- Requires minimal user interaction, except for popping the top and sipping. However cans have been known on occasion to explode, or contain extremely un-beer-like contents.U forgot Windows XP beer, which comes in at least two flavors (Home brew and Professional brew). One tastes better and is less filling than the other. Both require you to contact the Gates' Brewing Company with your proof of purchase before you can open the can.

LOL

This joke was made while Win95 was being written, so of course it wouldn't have XP. But that's a good addition. lol Sorry I haven't read any of these yet. I want to read them all, but I haven't found the time yet. I'll get to them soon!

FlameHow about

Windows ME beer

Comes in a 32-oz can. It is acclaimed by International Beer Manufacturing (IBM) as the best since NT, but tastes a lot like Windows 95 beer. However, during the fermenting stage, a bag of gunpowder was dropped into the brew, causing the cans to be filled with highly explosive beer. Drinkers have been known to display temporary insanity while drinking, including fits of rage, smacking at the nearest silicon object, and/or swearing. This beer is highly unstable and explodes seemingly at random.

Oh, how I LOATHE WinME...

Solve : Windows Explorer Has Encoutered A Problem?

Answer»

this is a very complicated problem and don't know very well to EXPLAIN it...

in my D drive i have all my downloaded music and FILMS stored. when i go to this drive it shuts down every time and says "windows explorer has encoutered a problem"... if i click fast enough and reach my widnows media file, it then also says "windows media player has encountered a problem" and shuts down....

what do i do??Does this happen with all CDs put into the drive, or a specific CD?

Flameim sorry i made a mistake. its not the D DRIVE, its the D (local) DISKI see. What if you open Windows Explorer? Does that crash it too? And out of curiosity what Operating System is this?

What the - ? I'm telling you, there's a glitch! I swear I hit Modify!

This is what ended up happening. I swear, I hit the Modify button!

http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/7008/glitch2vn.jpgNo, its only the folder where i STORE the movie/tv shows that crashed. i have windows xpWhat I mean is, if you try to ACCESS D: with Windows Explorer, does it crash? If it doesn't, I'd move all the files you can onto the C: drive. Your D: drive may require a format, after the files are BACKED up.

Solve : Intel Mother Board D865gvhz no audio?

Answer»

Just installed this MB and I have No audio. It is enabled in the BIOS. Jumpers are set for rear audio. It's not a speaker or cable problem. If I install a sound card the audio works. I would like to get the onboard soud to work, if for no other reason than a learning experiance. This is my first MB replacement. ThanksAnd you did install the audio drivers from the MB CD? Does ANYTHING show in device manager? Thanks for the quick reply. I had not LOADED the audio drivers from the CD. I have now installed the audio drivers and the chip set drivers, but when the system boots up it goes to a 2nd screen that says "windows is STARTING up" and just stays with that screen displayed. I reloade the OS Win XP pro and was BACK to normal operation and reloaded the audio and chipset drivers and now have the "windows is starting up" screen. again.I got it. I just re-booted a couple times. Thanks for your help you got me going. Thanks. One more question should the small green light on the Mb stay on when the computer is logged off?The light usually just shows that it is plugged into the wall, whether turned on or off. No problem there. Glad you are up and running.

Solve : Posts/day??

Answer»

When I get BORED or a flurry of POSTS come to an end, I usually CHECK my profile and see just how I killed my day. I happened to notice that on 4/7/2006 I made upwards of 50 posts. 4/8 is about 42 posts, and I'm just getting started on today. These are a lot of posts, and a good 99% of them are spam-free. (4/8 was a Mac ATTACK, forgive the exception) And yet, I'm almost tallied as 4 posts/day. Is SOMETHING wrong with the counter?averageYeah, it's an average of how many posts you make a day. Solve : New Concept?

Answer»

I have come up with a NEW concept I call "Bottom Feeding". What I wanted to do was have a way to use a program at school that the school didn’t have and probably wouldn’t allow. Well, I got to thinking how i could use this program at school. You can’t install it at school due to limitations on the network. What I did was start the install process on my own computer. In the install wizard, when it says location to place files I changed it from the C:\ drive to the E:\ drive.....my flash drive. I installed it and then took out my flash drive and went to my brother’s computer, put it in, opened the correct folder, found the correct file, clicked it and up starts the program. The only other thing you have to do is change the shortcut locations of the files in the "All Programs" window, because I had already installed it on my computer before HAND, so it replaced the shortcuts from C:\ to E:\. It didn’t take me long to switch the locations out THOUGH. So now I can use this program at school!!! The reason I call it "bottom feeding" is because the files on the flash drive are using the resources of the computer....the files are "feeding" off the computer.

I thought it was pretty cool, not sure if its been DONE before or not....probalbey so.It wont work in most cases because no support files or registry entries will be there. Anyway if admin decided that you cant run a program then you dont run it. Do it in work and youll end up jobless and in court.

Its not clever its plain stupid.Quote

Its not clever its plain stupid.

Yeah, ok....that's what you think, I happen to think other wise. You, eh... looking forward to having your comp privileges revoked? Now if you could put this much effort into your studies..... OK, it MAY work, and that would be a "clever" solution, but remember that you're not likely to get that much time on your system before some teacher or the local rat takes one look at what you're doing and either revokes your priveleges (if a teacher) or gets someone who does the former (if dealing with the rat). Also remember that you may get hardware confiscated.

Just a fair warning...Why not look up the word subversive and decide whether that's really what you want out of life? It's not as cool as it sounds and it certainly doesn't pay well...Quote

Its not clever its plain stupid.

Yeah, ok....that's what you think, I happen to think other wise.

Well its you thats plain stupid then.
Holy crap people....its West Point Bridge Design....if the school takes my computer privileges away for that, then its the school that is stupid. I thank you all for the warnings, and i'm not subversive.Quote

Glad to hear it. If you respect your school, you should change your user title.Quote
.....If you respect your school, you should change your user title.

I have respect for my school....it's just that it sucks getting up at 5 every morning to get there, taking classes I dont want to take and remembering what I "learned", stressing through the required test needed to graduate and all the other crap. So, yeah school sucks!!!

I know once I graduate life isn't going to be any easier, but I still hate school.
Yes, responsibility sucks.

Solve : prepare old PC for donation?

Answer»

Hi, I have 2 old PCS, both Windows 98. I want to donate them to a school or non-profit org. but want to make SURE all personal info. is off them first.
If I delete all word docs, excel files, etc. are they really gone? I've stored tax, credit card info. etc. over the years ... can someone still access them if I've deleted the files ?
Is there some way to delete abosolutely everything except the OPERATING system?

Thanks for your help! They say that a hard disk is never clean once used. Even if you delete the files, they say that someone could still find a way to access them... Sounds weird, but could you donate it without a hard disk?

FlameThanks. I wondered about that too. I think that's what I'll do just to be sure.... now for the fun of trying to get the case off so I can find the harddrive !

Thanks for your help!Killdisk:

http://killdisk.com/If you have an xp disk or 98 boot disk you can boot to it, delete the partitions & format the HDD.
Of course reading the question helps.

Killdisk:

http://killdisk.com/

Does it also delete the OS? searched site.. it's not even in the "Common Questions" :-?
I'm guessing it does, since the aim is to delete all... dumb question maybe? :-?

So what is actualy the point of hard drives keeping a record arfter a reformat? Is it not to keep track of anything that the authorites may want to find?
If so, then how is this killdisk software 'Microsoft Certified' ?

I guess if your looking to reformat and have an OS on disk killdisc would be a better option? weird how reformat does not do the same job?Data recovery doesn't consist just in finding what is on the hard drive (but hidden) but also what WAS on the hard drive. I do not know much about the technology, but I believe it involves detailed examination of the hard drive's magnetic surfaces, looking for faint "ghosting" that indicates what data was there before it was erased. Programs like KillDisk are designed to overcome this problem, typically by repeatedly writing random (or irrelevant) data to every sector of the hard drive. The more times this is done to a hard drive, the harder it becomes to detect the "ghost" of old data.Ohhhh i see...

I was thinking that maybe killdisc would clean the hard drive more than what a normal re-format could, which just didn't make sense to me.
But using killdisc is not like "cleaning" the disc it's more like a complete overwrite?
Makes sense now... still does not explain how this software could be free to download... maybe it's a lie, and doesn't work at all... Big brother is watching you!!! 8-)
Theres a LOT of software out there for securely erasing the contents of hard drives.
Youve got one free eraser already in debug.exe but if you dont want to use that look for any of the Bart type bootable utility cds that are freely available.I may be way off base here but I understand that a hard drive is never erased once used, old data just gets written over. I also understand that you can get programs that write over the disc some much that it hides or deletes any data that was there. could be wrong on this just what Iheard

If you want to do 3D ARTWORK, there is such a wide VARIETY that I can't even touch on a portion of them. Google seems to favor Adobe Dimensions and 3D Studio Max. No comment on them; I haven't USED them.Adobe Photoshop is also a wonderful product for artistic work.

Solve : task manager question?

when in processes in the task manager, whats the difference between setting a priority from high to realtimeThis isn't a homework assignment is it?

FlameWe don't give out the answers to homework assignments - not directly, anyways (I see no PROBLEM with posting links to Google search results). However, this is a tossup to me - I don't know if this is HW or if you're playing with the PC and are curious. Regardless, do a Google search for "task manager priority". I got the answer in 10 seconds.im seriously asking questions. dont answer unless you have an answer. i dont have time to wasti know alittle about computers and i signed up for this forum to ask real questions about things that i think i should know that are important or things i have a problem with. if this was a homework assingment id refer to the text book or whatever.I did give a google search keyword. Is it so hard to use it? And frankly, I don't care why you signed up. I thought you were asking a homework QUESTION and I responded in the way we normally do. (Actually, I went over the line a tad by showing you how to get the answer) I don't see why you're in such a hurry if this is just learning about Windows. Your post "I have no time to [waste]" speaks volumes.hey look sorry, i just was wondering about processes and stuff so i fugured id ask here, i know i should have done some research but i was being lazy looking for an answer. It is. Don't worry. I was a little... upset... because I checked my Email and found a ****load of hate mail. So please forgive me as well. Solve : I am trapped?

Answer»

Long LONG LONG STORY cut extremely short, I was forced to format my computer. I'm trying to get everything working starting with video drivers (typing this at... 600 X 800... or the other way around. :-? It's almost 1:00 AM where I am but I have gotten no sleep. Linux is lost, and I'm not going to be able to correct that for a while. In the meantime, nVidia's driver just finished d/ling (Using IE) so I'm gone for now. I'll elaborate later today after a little sleep and a lot of coffee.OK, forgive me for 2X posting here, but I feel I have earned a little indulgence. (Yeah, this is how I rebel. I double-post! ) I have most of the essentials downloaded and installed.

OK, what happened is that I realized that I needed space and I wasn't using Linux. I used PartitionMagic to make my drive one big happy partition with the intent of putting it back later, when I could use it. Or so I thought. Next reboot I GOT GRUB and a Error... 22? Nothing to do but Ctrl-Alt-Delete. I tried getting to recovery, but nothing could be done. I was forced - literally forced - to format. You have no idea how agonizing it was to read the message

CAUTION: All data on non-removable disk
C: will be lost! CONTINUE (Y/N)?

and know there was only one answer I could give that would allow me to ever use Windows again. The worst part of it was that I rebooted because my backup attempt locked up! Of all the...... oooh!! But it's still my fault for doing this, and I brought it onto myself. I have noone to blame but me, MAKING this all the more painful. I remember a utility that may be able to restore lost files, but I can't remember what it is. It's worth a shot, I suppose.

Anyways, I'm getting all the old stuff on there - just the essentials for right now. Spybot, Ad-Aware, the works. By now I know how to defend my PC - WHAT!?!?! I JUST FORMATTED THE ****ING THING! HOW CAN I HAVE 8 SPYWARES!?!?!?! ****! Ad-Aware just found 6 critical objects, probably the same ones. Ungh.... 1:23 AM and no sleep. And school later today. **** me.....

Sorry, I just can't believe what I've had to go through. And what's next... I know what's next: A full-system backup.Eek.

For future reference, your system was probably restorable via the GRUB command line. The only problem was that you had wiped out the GRUB config file, which was located on your Linux partition. But that needn't have been the end of the world.

You probably didn't want to know that.

Ah well, it's always therapeutic to do a complete reinstallation and end up with a pristine system. Sounds like a bit of an issue... Well, let's see... Did you connect the computer to the internet as soon as you could, even though you didn't have protection? I really hate telling people this, but the best thing to do is to just reformat that sucker once more and just throw some products on it before starting an internet connection. :-/

FlameOut of characters; sorry bout that.

I didn't need to do that? I have to ask: What else could I have done? Besides making floppies of my important files; I know that was stupid of me not to do. But I did keep that .bkf file or whatever on my desktop and I made it BEFORE all this happened. Only problem with that was: Access to "Documents and Settings" was denied. I tore my hair out. What else could I have done? Please tell me for future reference.

And in the end... this is healthy for my system and me... I'll back up all important documents from now on...Well, I know one thing... my computer is clean of malware... Sadly, I lost my work on QA0028. Maybe. What was that tool that lets you try to recover files again? Lemme check Google...The only thing that comes to mind is System Restore, but that doesn't revert files, just settings. Installations as well, but not like workd documents and such.

FlameI am doing a search in GetDataBack for NTFS. I'm hoping it can find a lot, since it's taking forever. The QA was a simple text DOCUMENT (.txt). I also had a folder full of soundbytes, but most of these were burned to CD (not as a backup, but for my enjoyment). You know what? It should be made so that you can play data files on CD and have music come out. If I could do that, I'd backup every day. 8-)

Asif SamadEnsure you can view hidden files. Then search for files of extension .pstThank you for the reply, UNFORTUNATELY did not find any .pst file after doing a *.pst search. I have hidden files enabled to view. It might be I have to install outlook 2000, instead of outlook xp on my new computer. This way I could open outlook 2000 from my old laptop hard drive.

Outlook files are usually stored under your profile. For example, mine are under C:\DOCUMENTS and Settings\Rob\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. Is that the KIND of place you've been checking?

Im in the neat-o process of transforming my pc into the awesominty that is orange. The problem is, My case has an abonoxious blue temp. display. I hate it with all of my being!! Its the only thing I can change so far. Has anyone EVER seen a not-blue display??
Also, Does anyone know of any sites that are NOT disadvantaged in the "Orange Department." :-/

And, do orange cathodes exist?? Ive seen plenty of red stuff on Mod sites, bt orange ie qite tricky...Fleetwood Computers have a bunch of orange stuff (put "orange" in the search box) but I don't know if they ship to the US. Newegg sells an entirely orange case - >look here<. Pretty good price, too. Cathode Lighting Systems have "orange" included in their cathode listings and you can buy orange el-wire from >these guys<, which MAY do as an alternative.

Orange and red are fairly difficult colours to CREATE, it seems, but here's an idea: if none of the above work for you, you could get a white cathode tube and wrap it in orange filter plastic (gels, used for lighting) - Maplin sells that kind of stuff. Or red cathode, yellow filter. Or yellow cathode, red filter. Or try a red cathode and a yellow cathode side by side = orange.

Have fun, and be sure to post a photo in this thread when you're done!I have seen that case, but I wanted one with a side and top window too. I looooove the color THOUGH!

Gah!!! Newegg has orange 3 mm led lights in stock!!! I get most of mine through www.Case-Mod.com, and they are and have been sold out of orange and white LEDs and Cathodes for agggggess.
Unfourtunately your site I believe does not ship to the Us!!! That makes me quite sad indeed. Its so tought to find ANYTHING orange, and When I do..its far out of reach.
Thanks for your suggestions robpomeroy! The cathode Ideas aren eat! Can you order from the cathode site??
Ill be sure to put up pics when Im finished! So far, My keyboard, fans, and most cables are orange and UV reactive orange. I have bubble lights on the front of my case that Im having trouble replacing though...They are a very noticeable BLUE.Quote

No idea, I'm afraid. Why not email them?

It would probably be better to black them out than have the blue clash with the orange.

For the record, I THINK you're bonkers. Well, what I was going to do was figure out just where the blue led (that shines on the bubble lights) is and kill it! I could just use an orange led, or even spray paint them.

Oh - I visualised blue plastic through which a white line shone. For sure you could change the led, if it's the led that's blue. How are your soldering skills?

Bonkers???
You want to make your PC orange! I rest my case. soldering skills eh?....I've never done it in my life!
I have alot of smart friends who do it all the time though. They hammer cars and smash rocks often...

Whats wrong with making my pc orange?? It needs to match, and so far..It does just that!Rob, don't you have an orange computer? It makes it run faster!

I may spray paint this old Optiplex!

<------------------Who knows - maybe once my twins get the hang of using crayons, I will have an orange PC. I can't wait.

Well seen as i have been having bother from amazon con artists i have a idea.

There are plenty of internet scams on the GO and emails and all this bad stuff.

I THINK CH should make a forum dedicated to this to help people who may be new to computers not GET scammed.

Knowledge is power and if people know whats bad they wont get themselves into bother.

Is this a good idea?

R0SSSo you WANT an awareness board?

Have you set the encryption level? Assigned MAC addresses?

FlameUh, no, I don't think so. I live in rural Oregon, and don't expect anyone to be able to crack the PW. Einstein need not WORRY: Nobody around this town is threatening to oust him as smartest man ever.

But I will do that if this problem arises again. That and change the PW...Keep it in mind. It's amazing the technology they have on that for security!

FlameI will keep it in mind, but I also will remember the following:

The neighbors in question are about 50+ years of AGE (you may think a STERN talk with near-seniors about bandwith is a sign I have no heart, but these guys are real jerks). Their kid is a 5TH grader with the numeral equivalent of a B- average. What are the chances they can even figure out our 10-character PW, let alone know any software to help them do it? Not high, I imagine. I just removed your last post becuase it was a double post

Solve : Windows 98 trouble?

Answer»

I am new and need some advice. When I start up my computer. 266 mhz pent. I get a dos message which reads:

Cannot find device file that maybe needed to run windows or a windows application.

The windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.

If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program.

If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.

c:\WINDOWS\system\VMM32\enable.VXD
press a key to continue.

I press a key and everything seems to be working fine. Am i being vague, or can anyone help?I remember seeing that on WinME. I never did figure out what was going on... I wouldn't worry about it as older Operating Systems have bigger issues to worry about. Seriously, it was never more than an annoyance. Maybe a Win98 expert knows how to get rid of it, but if not I wouldn't panic. You have removed some program or device that had files called for in the registry.Whatever was removed, probably incorrectly or a corrupted file for something not being used, it is not required for the system to function correctly (apparently). In the absence of knowledge of what it is specifically, a reformat would be the best and QUICKEST way to remove the error message, but if things are working correctly and you don't want to reinstall Windows,it is just a nuisance. Thanks for the QUICK responce. I guess I'll just put up with it. I use firefox as a web browser and would like to remove internet explorer from my computer the message is probable Gates way af getting back Sadly, you need to keep IE for updates. I don't thin IE is at the root of this problem. Leaving it in your system is not going to cause any problems, but there are ways to remove it (www.litepc.com) but updates are obtained through IE, if those are needed.I THOUGHT this went away with W95, apparently not. Try this.
The Windows Accessibility driver (Enable.vxd) is damaged or missing.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
2. Click the Windows Setup tab.
3. Click the Accessibility Options check box to CLEAR it.
4. Click OK and restart the computer when requested.
MORE INFORMATION
If you want to enable the accessibility features, repeat the above steps. In step 3, click the Accessibility Options check box to SELECT it.
The problem that you have has occurred because you have improperly removed a program.
chances are, you or someone else tried to remove a program by right-clicking on the folder where it was located, or it was deleted in DOS.
(That was mainly what GX1_Man said)
I know this because I got a computer from my neighbors, and they had improperly removed some old virus scanner, and I get the same thing with a different directory and file name.
If I am wrong, please tell me. I am rather curious about this error as well.Quote

I suppose your right.
Would editing regedit and deleting the registry file that the directory belonged to help?Or make things a LOT worse, depending on what was done. Does the registry have a backup or a restore disk?Go to File > Export... and save it to disk, either a floppy or a CD-ROM. If you mess up the whole thing, you can go into MS-DOS mode and activate the .reg thing like an EXE file. The registry will automatically be synchronized, thus fixing the problem. That's IF you mess up the system with regedit.Quote

Solve : lap top no fixed disk??

Answer»

Hi;
I have just been given a 6.4 gig fujitsu lap top. Problem! Turn it on and no operating system. I tried windows startup disk with limited results fdisk comes back no fixed disk present but I can see it. Is the hard drive shot? :-/What do you mean by "You can see it"? Physically see it, or BIOS sees it?Was it working when it was received? Ether the drive is kaput or there are other issues - controller, etc. This problem has been since I got the laptop. I can see the c drive when I use a startup disk but I think it might only be the ramdrive. I just thought someone might be able to give me some advice on how to test the c. (if it is a virus on something. The statrup disk says that win 98 has detected that c does not contain a VALID FAT or FAT32 partition. It says I may need to partition I run fdisk and the computer says no fixed disk found. Is it hopeless? Do your BIOS say that you have any hard disk present?
You may need to set the disk up FIRST if your computer is too old to detect it by itself.Yes the bios says there is a primary master and when I boot from the hard disk drive you can physically hear the hard drive but only for a few seconds. Then the display shows Operating system not found find some old OS and install it. (something LIKE DOS or Windows 3.0)

Does anyone know what would happen if you copied a start up disk to an HD?No Operating System is much different than No Fixed Disk. How about loading a bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com for say WIn98SE and partition and format the drive to see if it works? Thanks for the link. I'll try and then I post results. Nope, same problem. c does not contain valid FAT or FAT32 partition I run fdisk from MS-DOS...No fixed disk present. :-?
With your boot disk, type in "Format" and see if the format program starts.
If you want to see if your disk has patrons, type in "fdisk /status" this could give you HD information. Chances are, you will get the same error message as you got before, but its worth a shot.
Correction: You need to copy the Format file to your HD, and from what you have posted, this may be hard. If you get it copied, use this command while formatting "format /s" it will copy the system files and allow you to boot into DOS when your computer starts.

(Formatting erases your entire disk, it is hard to recover data, use as last resort)
(correct me if I'm wrong, I am not familiar with the commands "format" and "fdisk)"fdisk"="No fixed disks present." I think it's the hard drive. I can't run "format" or install it in c:. the only way I can change the directory to c: is if I "findramd"
I think I'll look for a hard drive for this unit but it's pretty old. I can hear the hard drive working for a few seconds that is why I kept working on it.
Take the hard drive out and tap it smartly against a hard surface. This will either unstick the hard drive (result!), or break it completely (satisfying!) - either way, you will have ACHIEVED something!

(This advice comes from lots of work with elderly hard drives, but of course is not a long-term solution to the problem. I know that. It was just more interesting than posting "Your hard drive is dead. BUY a new one." )Quote

Solve : Certain sites won't work! (but do for everyone els?

Answer»

The title pretty much explains it all. For no apparent reason, specific sites I use to visit won't work anymore. I use to visit the sites all the time on my computer with no problems at all, and when the sites stopped working, I don't remember hitting anything.

All I was doing was looking at pictures on ONE of the sites. I went to the next link for the next picture and...poof! Wouldn't work.

At first I thought it was just the server or something, but I found out other people could access it no problem. Then it also happened to another site I visited often. Just stopped working...and everyone else is saying they can get to them!

Now this has been going on for I think a month and it's ticking me off. I want my sites back but don't KNOW how. Anybody know why this could have happened or how to fix it?Put up a link to one of the sites. Here's one:
www.bulbagarden.net/What happens when you click on that link? The page turns over to the typical white and the little loading bar, very slowly, begins to fill up. When it fills, the page sits on blank for awhile, then loads again. Once it finishes loading again, the usual "Cannot FIND server" page comes up.May i ask you if you are on a wireless connection and what INTERNET service provider you are with?I think its because POKEMON is dead

R0SSLmao Ross, thats just plain mean!

The same thing happens to me, I was about to make a separate thread about it.
I cant visit www.yahoo.com , www.apple.com and a few other sites.
I have to search for them in Google, and its getting annoying.I have heard of this and one member of the forum that the other member posted this on said . Its a possibility that yuou IP is not allowing you to acces that page. That is what I heard from 1 person so It might be wrong. If you can reach the site after Google, this smacks of a virus. The clincher is below:

Mepple, if you Google for the sites, and click the link, does the site load normally?

If the answer is yes, I'd say a rogue program is at work. If not... we'll continue.I don't know about Mepple, but my computer loads the sites correctly when you search for them.
Its still rather annoying, and I doubt its any kind of malware (watch as someone quotes these words)

ADDITIONAL:
I have Anti-Virus protection from Yahoo, with Spyware/adware scanner as well as Microsoft Anti-SpywareQuote

I doubt its any kind of malware (watch as someone quotes these words)

You mean like me? I highly doubt that it's not malware. But let's not clutter this thread with HJT logs from two PC's; that's just confusing. Let's wait for Mepple to give his answer.

Solve : Backup Data - DVD vs HDD?

Answer»

I'm looking to backup all my files and stuff, but I'm debating on what I should back it up to. I have a lot of movies and stuff and so I'm looking to back up around 500GB. A hard drive would be the easiest as how I could just transfer it all over and then stick the hard drive in a closet until I need it. DVDs would be more cost effective as I can get a 100pk for like $50, but it's a pain in the *censored* to burn all that stuff. I'm just looking for some opinions on the matter and any info to tip the scale. Thanks. All hard drives die eventually. yeah, moving parts... i wish DVD DL weren't so expensive... oh well. Thanks. With the HDD option wouldnt you have t ostore it somewere specific with all that anti static stuff rapper around it. Also using the HDD ption would be a bit more RISKY wouldnt it?well i have anti-static bags... but yes it would be more risky. that's why i'm going with DVD and was looking for an easier way to store 500GB other than burning 100+ DVDs, but DVDs are just so much cheaper and easier to handle after the fact. I wish DL were cheaper, and they are compared to a couple of months ago, they just aren't priced reasonably enough yet for that kind of use. I don't want to go any longer without a backup for all this stuff. As my motto goes for most anything, save anything you don't want to lose. thanks all.Get the DVDs on the go bro

R0SSI like backing up to my external hard drive personally. I like how I can take it everever I go and not lug around tons of CDs. I'm not sure that a hard disk, if stored properly, would die without you getting good use out of it. Yes, a CD could "survive" longer if we think about it, but how long must it last? I'm sure it would last you for years and years. DVDs would be a good idea, but you have a lot to store, so I don't know. Now that I think about it, I best support you in buying CDs instead. All a HD needs is one natural disaster to ruin it. A HD is hydrophoebic. CD's aren't. I would also consider (assuming you are going the CD route) purchasing what they call CD Skin. It's a very thin packet made of plastic that surrounds the CD and avoids scratches. It's still READABLE by CD players too!

FlameCan't dual-layered DVDs hold about 8.5 GB??

http://www.dvdrw.com/press/duallayer.htm

Of course, you need to be able to write them. Yes, but the visitor needs 500 GB worth of CDs then... That's like 58 CDs...

FlameOh, I know. I'm not saying an external hdd is out of the question, but that dual-layer DVD's can hold more than the average CD-RW. Agreed, it just depends on how much you need to burn

Flameyes, DL DVDs hold 8.5GB and the REGULAR are 4.7GB. While DL burners are quite cheap now, the media is not; at least it's not cheap enough to backup 500GB. I found this article online that seemed kinda relevant

http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,124312,00.asp

at any rate, i'm going to go with a HDD. DVDs are cheaper, but i'm really not liking the idea of burning all of those DVDs (and that's assuming they all burn well with no errors). i'm debating over whether i should stick the HDD in an anti-static bag or buy an actual enlcosure for it. either way i guess it doesn't matter cause it's just going to be sitting in a closet until the one day i might actually need it.As an aside, does anyone know any good SATA to USB hard drive enclosures? I'd rather store my spare HDDs in an enclosure and then just connect them STRAIGHT to my comp via USB whenever I need to RESTORE data or add data to my backup. There are some on ebay, but I'm not so sure how good they are. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Solve : Is this for real??

Answer»

Has anyone experienced this yet?

When they booted up, today, some XP users in North America will have been invited to download a couple of "updates," including one for the Microsoft Genuine Advantage scheme that's part-and-parcel of the now-delayed Vista.

A Windows Genuine Advantage pop-up nags perpetrators (or victims) if Microsoft thinks they're running a fake copy of Microsoft Windows XP.

Instead of the Blue Screen of Death, perpetrators (or victims) "running a copy of Windows that has failed the Windows Genuine Advantage validation process" will see:

It appears that you could be a victim of software piracy. The copy of Windows installed on this computer is not considered to be genuine by Microsoft."

And they'll keep on SEEING it until their computers are running "genuine Microsoft Windows".

They'll have two choices.

Click Resolve now or, click REMIND me later.

There's also the dreaded Balloon Notification

"After you log on to a non-genuine copy of Windows XP, you receive a balloon notification message in the notification area that is specific to the validation failure. You can click the balloon notification or the notification area icon to open the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Failure Web page. This Web page gives you the specifics of the validation failure and the steps that you can take to make the operating system genuine."

Then the pervasive Desktop Banner Text which'll appear if perpetrators (or victims) choose Remind me later.

In that case, the following banner text appears on the "locked desktop":

"The copy of Windows installed on this computer is not considered to be genuine by Microsoft.

Of COURSE, there are alternatives.

Linux, anyone?

How are you measuring this "SPEED"? If you mean speed of a download, well downloads tend to be throttled at the server END, to prevent any one person from HOGGING all the bandwidth.you cant, its all do do with how many people are online and how many people are dowloading from that server.

There is NOTHING you can do.

R0SSHas it always been like this? Sometimes if you unplug the MODEM for about 30 seconds and then power it back up, the speed goes back to what it should be...

Solve : Drive geometry?

Answer»

I made a quick search about this and found 0 results. Somebody has been messing around with my pc while I was on holidays. Fortunately, I had an extra hard disk to install windows in. I have a Maxtor of 120 gb and this is the error message PARTITION Magic 8.0 program gives me:

# Disk 3 (117239MB 14946c 255h 63s) appears to have partitions created a different drive geometry (16h 63 s). This serious problem can lead to data loss. No partition manipulations should be made to this disk using this product or the operating system's products. You should back up the data on this disk, delete all partitions, create new partitions under the new drive geometry, and then restore your data using the back up. #

I have no interest in recovering the lost data. I have never heard about drive geometry before and I have absolutely no idea of what tool I need to use to try and fix this hard disk. Any SUGGESTIONS will be extremely appreciated.

Thank you all,

OberlusQuote

Now, Im no pro, but I can tell you that it wants you to do the following:
1. Find a patron managing program
2. Delete all of the patrons that have been created
3. Re-format
4. Scan for errors
and then you can install your OS again, and make what ever new partons you want

But, before you follow my advice, wait for a few other replies, as I am not sure of my advice yet either.
Heres what I also found:

Quote
The generic term used to refer to the way the disk structures its data into platters, tracks and sectors, is its geometry. In the early DAYS this was a relatively simple concept: the disk had a certain number of heads, tracks per surface, and sectors per track. These were entered into the BIOS set up so the PC knew how to access the drive, and that was basically that.

With newer drives the situation is more complicated. The simplistic limits placed in the older BIOSes have persisted to this day, but the disks themselves have moved on to more complicated ways of storing data, and much larger capacities. The result is that tricks must be employed to ensure compatibility between old BIOS standards and newer hard disks.

Note: These issues relate to IDE/ATA hard disks, not SCSI drives, which use a different addressing methodology.

and GOOGLE: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22Drive+Geometry%22One more thing: "16h 63 s" means 16 heads, 63 sectors. These are the BIOS configuration for a hard drive.

EDIT: Even better.
Your hard drive stores 117239MB,
14946 sectors,
has 255 heads,
and 63 sectors.

The problem is that these settings have been changed. It is now the following:
hard drive stores 117239MB,
14946 sectors,
has 16 heads, *PROBLEM*
and 63 sectors.

And another note, the above are called "Hard Drive Parememters"
Oh please, someone correct me now if I've said something wrong :-?There is something I would like you to check, Oberlus.
I would like you to enter the BIOS of your computer. Go the the cofiguration tab that has the hard drive information on it, and write down what is listed NEXT to your hard drive. This could help find the problem.

(Yes, I know I have made three posts on this topic.)I will do what you told me and bring back what the BIOS states. I really apreciate your help and explanations.

Cheers,

Oberlus

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, I went to the Bios section and it says exactly what Partition Magic told me. The problem is right there instead of having 255 h it's reading it as if it had 16 h... I don't know what tool I can use to change that... This is a very serious problem...

Solve : Trackball Fetish??

Answer»

What kind of sick person steals trackballs from school computer mice? The reason I'm typing this (on a school PC) is because I had the trackball replaced only to have it stolen again. I'm serious, someone must have a serious fetish for trackballs. Well at our school we have the laggy bands taken from the CD drives on some pcs so the cd driver are kaput Yeah the same sick stuff happened at my school.
So our school just bought Laser mice.

R0SSWhy would your school prefer a trackball mouse? Those things are impossible to use... But yes, a very sick person one must be to steal those.

FlameI think our PC's are donated... in our CAD CLASS we got donated a dozen really old 19" CRT monitors. Set the contrast at MAX, and you get some trippy effects.

Its wired upto the smartboard and whenever i click my mouse the screen shakes My eyes are killing me after I.T these days. Hm, we just got some cheap Dells last year. Thats just some advice so play it safe and spot the conns

R0SSIS there anyway to stop this guy?

thanks for reading i just thought i would warn you all because Amazon new comers could send that away thinking its genuine.

R0SS

Smarter than the average bearI do not beleive there is a way to stop the con artist from sending the emails. The best thing you can do is block that specific email with a spamm filter or other applications. Also just to report this because certain sites have an area where youc an report it. I

I ahve got some wierd emails to instead of from Amazon I got a more common one form Paypal. Here is the scary thing though the email seems legit and it even replies to the paypal supporrt center. I check the email it says [emailprotected] it said i need to confirm something and blablabla. I click on it because I was just curious. the scary thing is that the site started off with https://paypal.com/longextentionofwiredlettersandnumers and what YA know a virus was planted on the computer. Not really since my scanner caught it.

I do believe that these companies should send email alerts out to everyone about the fake emails and how to identify it. Instead of any REGULAR consumer finding out the hard way. MANY people do not pay attention to the very fine details in the email just the details we see in front of us.i agree people need to be warned, i hope this thread warrens some people but the company need to tell their customers.

From my experience in Amazon its African people who tend to try to con you.

I have received tones of emails about people offering like £300 for the PS2 and they will send me their UPS shipping account details.

Things like that are obviously too good to be true.

R0SSSo if i click that link windows ill get a virus? Just intreged.
Anyway well spotted ROSS. Have you got in contact with amazon and told them? But when you say its tooo good to be true i dont understand why it is, theyre paying you £300 and then they give you their detais, sounds legit to me ?? Anyone have the tme to explain to me, would be appreiciated.
Something that AOL do which is very helpfull ( yes i did just say AOL was helpfull ) which has stopped people trying to con you out of your account is when they send a message if it is official then it will appear as a blue letter in your inbox.

C}{r1$

P.S sorry if i have just temporarily hijacked your post. Its ok man this is all in the interest of not getting RIPPED OFF!

Well they send you the money through some other thing like Paypal i wouldn't trust it.

the emails all start the same

" I am a doctor working in Nigeria........."

Something about that place. IT LACKS DISAPLINE!

They probably dont have any Laws there. I wouldn't send any one jack there

R0SSI would report it to Amazon and give them time for a satisfactory response. If no response or its unsatisfacrory, the BBC is always looking for a good story. Nothing like bad publicity to get a company moving.Ahhhhh ok thanks Ross, that makes sence. thanks.
Why dont you go along with them for a bit, you know mess with them?? But then cancel everything at last moment, show them that good old Ross isnt an idiot.Ha yeah i was going to send them a box with a note saying GET A GRIPP!

but my mum is into that supernatural stuff and apparently i will get voodood.

Not a fate i would like lol

I might go to watch dog lol

R0SSBest thing is to never respond to a link in any e-mail. Just type in the correct www address and go from there. I get scams supposedly from eBay and Paypal all the time, but there always is a flaw in the link. I report it to their fraud division and delete it without ever clicking anything in it.HAHAHAHAHAHAH Ross, yea thats proberly not the best thing. Seriously though Watchdog? Thats proberly not a bad idea, that might get amazon moving. Or maybe im jsut being a bit to ambitios. GX1_Man whenever things like that are reported does anything even happen? Just curious. And how do they get you email adress, surely theres some people within the COMPAN leaking it all? What we need is a Military organization who find these Internet Hackers and the people who make viruses and all this sick stuff on the net.

This unit like the CIA then go tho their house and well lets just say "Make them never do it again"

The government needs one of these. If there was i would join!!!!!!!!!

R0SS[emailprotected] and [emailprotected] get the complaints. What they do with it is unknown to the end user. E-Mail addresses are readily harvested from the net, from e-bay, from clicking on free offers and inputting that info, etc.Not to mention the fact that they can have a PC just send out Emails to a whole ****load of "potential Email addresses", then subscribe you to a spam list if

  • There is no felivery failure notice
  • You reply in any way, shape or form
Good idea, ROSS.

Isn't "Skynet" the psychotic global computer network from the Terminator films...? Hmm...

The WHOIS data reveals the (likely) geographical location of an IP address, but note that the trace will end at the ISP. Unless you are a police organisation, you aren't going to be able to track beyond the ISP to the end user... And frankly, who'd want to?!!!The line on the map (which is cut off) shows the access that I get to the web site based on the places that it must go through frst. (EG: If I lived in Montanna, which I do not, it would have to go from my location, to the closets ISP server, across to the server of the site, and whatever it needs to go to next. It could have a few stops. And yes, robpomeroy, you were right.

"Skynet is only vaguely described in the first two movies, but is shown in more detail in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Originally, Skynet was created by Cyberdyne Systems Corporation, which in Terminator 3 is a sub-contractor for the United States Air Force's Cybernetic Research Systems."

Now I'm thinking that Mac is just some AI computer with nothing better to do.

http://www.skynet.be/ Sorry, dont SPEAK Dutch, German, or NetherIsnt it possible to contact Macs ISP (belgacom.be or Skynet.be) and have them block all access to this site?'Twould be one heckuva AI! But Mac is gone (for now, anyways).

Why would Mac at first be helpful, then go to the point where only 11% of himself is sane?

I have received help from Mac, but it just doesn’t make sense.

Just how satisfied are you with the way your COMPUTER works? When you log on your computer, are you dreading the tasks of the immediate future, or are you looking forward to using your computer? Please provide details, especially if you dislike your PC. We want to hear the juicy details of why your computer is a prime candidate to be a murder victim.

I gotta say, I've never been happier with my current comp than any other. Oh sure, things go wrong, but once everything is in place, my computer gives me bang for my buck - it finally acts like a PC of these specs should.I love my computer! It's a bit slow at startup, but that's BECUASE tons of thing load then lol A 512 video card is all that's I'm missing to be perfectly content.

FlameI really like my computer, it helps me to make a lot of things in life easyer, so I can't complainI would like my computer to be a little bit faster lol

R0SSWhen I first upgraded my computer the speed difference just blew me away. Now it feels so s...l...o...w until I try using one of the old school machines.Any hard-core gamer would put my computer out for TRASH pickup ASAP, but I'm not a gamer and I feel that I have a very good MACHINE for what I've INVESTED in it. It starts up in about a minute. Office 2003 and other apps launch plenty fast enough. I just got my first DVD player about 2 months ago and can play DVD's quite well. I just bought a microphone for some expermenting with online collaboration using NetMeeting; I've also use my digital camera in PC Cam mode, i.e. as a webcam, for the video part of NetMeeting. I have an inexpensive second video card in a PCI slot to run a second monitor. In summary, I've been able to do anything I've wanted to do with it so far, without feeling any significant need to get something better.

However i have many pictures stored on it's hard drive that I really want to still have. Is it somehow POSSIBLE to access those files to copy them onto my new computer? I was thinking maybe of removing the hard drive and somehow hooking it up to another computer, i really dont KNOW how to go about getting the pictures though. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank youYup, not too difficult, but you'll really want a computer-savvy friend to help out with this. One that's familiar with the inside of computers.Ask him to "slave the drive and backup the data". If he draws a blank, ask someone else. Someone who knows what he's doing should have little TROUBLE.

Solve : How to backup Yahoo e-mail????

Answer»

I am doing a full system restore on my PC, so I'm trying to backup everthing
before hand. I have the Microsoft Works word proccessing program. I tried
saving Yahoo e-mail by doing a copy & paste to the Works program. I was
able to save, but the text came out poorly formatted once I pasted to Works. Everything was very difficult to read.

Does anyone have some other suggestions on how backup Yahoo e-mail?
I would appreciate any HELP. Thank you.

-jimbob.You can use Word or Wordpad (whichever you have) to save as .doc or .rtf to save FORMATTING, fonts, etc. Thanks, GX1.

I have Wordpad (no Word). I tried saving to Wordpad, but I'm having a simular
problem with the FORMAT. I will say that I'm not familiar with the Wordpad program. Perhaps, I'm doing something wrong.

-jimbob.That is a WEB based e-mail, right? So you are doing a copy and paste for each one by hand?

In Wordpad are you saving each one with an .rtf (Rich Text File) extension?GX1 Man,

Yes, to both parts of your first sentence. No, I was not saving them with an .rtf
extension. That seems to have been the problem. Also, I was not using the
'printable view' mode in Yahoo e-mail. Now, I'm saving with the .rtf extention
and using printable view. Everything looks 100% better. Thanks a lot for help.
I really appreciate it.

-jimbob.I'm glad you are all fixed up! Thanks for posting back.
