Solve : Hacking into Old Computer!!?

Answer»

I was just given the task by my boss to clean up an old computer that has been sitting out for God knows how long. I set it up and it came on. . . good news!! The problem I have is that I need a password to get in and work on it. Sadly no one in the office knows it, as a matter of fact we aren't really sure if the PERSON who used to work on it is still with us.

The computer is a Dell Dimension 4100, if that helps any!!

:-?
How can I get past the password?
GUESS!!! Quote

GUESS!!!

Guess what??

The password LOL,Yes, then, I should start NOW see if I find it before I die. LOL

Do we get a hint on the operating system? You got to guess that also!!!
I had to physically pull the computer appart.
Change the BIOS CONF jumper and enter in maintenance mode.
I got in and NOW it is giving me trouble with the hardware (mouse and keyboard) RRRR

I'll keep troubleshooting until I FIGURE it out.Sorry, but we cannot help you to "HACK" your way into a computer. We have no proof that you're not trying to go into someone else's computer, so sorry, but we have to stick by the rules. Good luck.

FlameJo ...... So you RESET the Cmos and have now removed the admin password .
It sounds like that machine could have A P3 .....maybe 1000ghz processor with 128 mb of ram and running win 2k.......
What issue are you running into with the keyboard and mouse ?

dl65

I actually got it squared out. I had to reboot it about three times but it came back ok.
The mouse and keyboard worked fine. I'm still working on it as far as cleaning it out but otherwise I think I survived.

Thank you so much for your help everyone, you managed not to let me look like a total idiot in front of my boss.

THANK YOU!! Thats what were here for

Solve : Mac Question?

Answer»

I have heard for the longest time that Macs suck, what I want to know is why does everybody say that Macs suck? Is it the operating system? No features, no compatibility, etc. You don't have REALLY any control over a Mac, and it's impossible to get what you want out of it, especially when there's no thrid party software for it.

FlameLets all take a field trip:
Go to www.download.com, search for "Games" under software for free.

Free Games for Windows XP:
Results: 889

Free games for Mac OS X:
OH GOODY! 38!

Mainly because compatibility, Macs don't have any good games, programs, or anything like that.

HOWEVER: They are good for the office environment, mainly because "FREE!" software cannot be installed on them.

Lets ignore that whole thing about Macs not being able to get viruses, no one even bother to target a Mac for a virus.

Quote

Macintoshes are not targeted for viruses, adware, or spyware because they are not compatible with running the files needed to infect most computes. Sure, viruses can be downloaded, but not activated within a Mac. People don’t target Macs because they are not often used. They are only good for office COMPUTERS. I would die if my school started replacing them. If I were a virus maker, or a hacker, I would want to target the most used OS and PC’s on earth, Microsoft and comp’s that run with Intel’s or Athlon’s (yes, I know that for the first time, the Intel Chip is being locked down to eak out a miserable existence INSIDE, please hold your breath, a MAC) I have a Mac, and the only thing I am impressed with is the voice reorganization programs. (Yes, that’s right, I talk to my computer. It can ALSO sing, but that’s not one bit useful).
(that was a quote from myself, and yes, I do talk to my Mac. I call it Idiot, or computer, or "Push to Talk".So, is it the OS, What if i put XP on it, would it still suck? Not all Macs can have Windows installed on them...Dump off your prissy Mac and get a real computer lol

FlameQuote
Not all Macs can have Windows installed on them...
Your still not answering my question...are the faults in the OS? If i put XP on it, if allowable, would it be like my dell, or would it still have the problems and faults associated with it?
Quote
Dump off your prissy Mac and get a real computer lol
I dont have a Mac, check out my Sig....Dell Owner.
Quote
Your still not answering my question...are the faults in the OS? If i put XP on it, if allowable, would it be like my dell, or would it still have the problems and faults associated with it?

I really don't know. There might be some limitations, but it might be the same.
Did you search Google for that? Not yet, been busy setting up a home network. I search it tommorow at school.Installing XP on Macs was a big challenge which has only just been overcome this year. The indications from Apple now are that they will make it easier for their hardware to run MS Windows - whether people will do it remains to be seen.

The main problem with Macs is that they are not the computer system that everyone uses. PCs are on most people's desks, so software and hardware manufacturers concentrate their efforts on PCs. Why build Mac stuff when there are far fewer customers?

But Macs have traditionally held sway in the area of graphic DESIGN - and they still do. Go to any professional printing or publishing house, and you will find a high concentration of Macs, with state of the art graphics software and hardware. Their users swear by them.

Solve : Web pages print too small?

Answer»

I have downloaded and installed Windows INTERNET Explorer 7 Beta 2 in order to properly size Web pages that I choose to print out. I printed a test Web page and indeed the text is correctly sized on the paper but now the print size is much too small. I have selected the Largest Text Size on my IE browser but still the print turns out small. How do I enlarge the text size so that it is easier to read on the paper that I print from a Web page? Any suggestions will be most appreciated. Thanks.
jandal :-?What is your screen resolution?

FlameFlame:

My screen resolution is currently 1280x1024 pixels. I right-clicked my desktop to find this out. I am very disappointed with the IE 7 beta that I installed. It may help in accurately sizing we :-?b pages to print but I hate the appearance. I miss my old menu bar with File, Edit, View, etc. on the top of the screen. I'm thinking of switching back to IE 6 Service Pack 2 if I can't RESOLVE this text size problem. Can you help me? Thanks.

janda; Is there a section on theyour new version of IE were it has the file, edit, view etc anywere?!?!?

If you can find it then go into view, then scroll down to text size and SELECT it to your prefrence. This is what you do on IE 6 so im not sure if it will be the same on your version. This sometimes happens to me but im using Firefox. Just changing it solves the problem.chriscool9:

With version IE 7 Beta 2, there is no section that has File, Edit, View, etc. The closest I can come is to click a Pages button, then scroll down to click Text Size. The text does print a little larger when I select Medium but I notice there's no change in size when I choose to print at the Largest option. Maybe I'm just too picky but I would prefer finding a way to print at a larger Text Size. BTW, I'm totally dissatisified with IE 7 and PLAN to switch back to my older IE 6 Service Pack 2. Any further tips you may have for me would be much appreciated. Thank you.
jandal Sorry mate ive looked all over the web for you and cant find anything that will resove your problem. Have you tried mailing Microsoft?

Edit: Here i did a little more looking for you, try pressing the ALT button and see if the toolbars appear.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/support/default.mspx

This is the website i got all my information from.

Come back and give me the feedback. If it doesnt work go round to my friends and have a look with his for you.

C}{r1$chriscool9:

I believe I have solved at least part of the problem! After spending a few days getting used to my new Internet Explorer 7.0 Beta 2 browser I finally found the section with File, Edit, View, etc. by clicking Tools, Toolbars, and choosing the Classic Menu option. Now I have the old, familiar toolbar that comes with older IE versions. IE 7 beta is great at automatically sizing web pages so one can print without worrying about having part of the text cut off. However, I still would like to find a way to enlarge the text size so it will print larger. But my battle is half won. If you'd like to try the new IE version, go to:

.

Thanks for your help, chriscool9.

jandalHahahah with all the problems people seem to behaving i think ill stick with my Firefox, thanks anyway. Well Ill keep up the research for you, but as i say i havnt got IE 7 so im not sure ill be any use.chriscool9:

You are very wise NOT to install IE 7.0 Beta 2 because I have been running into major problems recently. Since switching to IE 7 I can no longer copy/paste and when I click web links nothing happens. I am switching back to IE 6. There obviously are major glitches in IE 7. I guess we should all learn to just be satisfied and leave well enough alone. Sorry I steared you wrong, chris.

jandalNo worries buddy, good luck!

Solve : What do you have against Windows??

Answer»

Quote

I haven't had many problems with XP, and ME was *censored*, so of course, I love XP compared to ME.

Flame
Flame:
Same here. I haven’t had any really big problems with Windows XP, just the software I have installed on it. (Like Yahoo Online Protection which will not remove itself from the system)
To tell you the truth, Windows ME is the best 9.X OS made for Windows. (I know that my poll has Windows ME with XP and 2003, it was part of my classification process)
The reason I like Windows ME is because it is similar to 98 and somewhat similar to 95. The best part is the fact that it has a bunch or drivers that can be automatically detected and I can just connect my flash drive no problem at all.
Quote
You hate ME & love XP Flame... a vexing dilema, what did you vote for? :-?
The best Windows OS (W2K) didn't even get a mention.
Fed:
Windows 2K:
I never really knew the difference between 2K and ME.
I think its mostly the same, could you please tell the differences?

All it is Total Computer Nerds that think Microsoft is bad.

i have a friend who got a Dos Manual when he was like 12.

And YES! When he gets a computer BAm Linux is on and FireFox and all the other stuff.

Realistically they have read too much crap on the internet.

I think there is nothing wrong with Microsoft i wouldn't use and FireFox crap or Linux that's for sure.

Make your Own assumptions dont ask "why" people think its bad because then you might think its bad to.

Microsoft is Ace

R0SS

P.S Yes i would like a Job in Microsoft delivering PR speeches providing the PRICE is right

Anyone who likes computers and is a computer nerd/geek will ALWAYS say they don’t like Windows. That's because everyone seems to have it. They want to say that they can do something that you CANT do, and they are leading themselves into the world of not being able to use Windows.

Firefox is somewhat useful, but mainly for the tabbed browsing. Microsoft is coming out with Internet Explorer 7 that will be better than Firefox, it will have tabbed browsing, and phishing alerts.

I know my way around a few OS, but I like Windows the most.Quote
I am a Windows 98 user person.
I really do not have any problems with Windows 98 but the newer Operating Systems are a bit faster and can run many more applications at once. When I tend to use the computer for web surfing some MMORPG thats about it. I do not really use the computer for really intense stuff. Personally I am fine With my current Operating System but I have use Windows 2000 at school and it seems pretty good. I had a bad experience with Windows ME so I've been avoiding all the newer OS upgrade. PLUS my computer seems to run better with 64MB RAM then more ram.

Linux. I am still trying to install, The first time I TRIED to the download was somehow corrupted so the installation files didnt WORK. I redownloaded the second time installation seems fine but then the computer wont boot. When I have time I plan to try again.

Mac OS. When I first tried it at school, the very old kind that was "new" but still took forever to open IE I thought to myself Mac sucks. Now the newer versions are better and faster. Its too bad when the school was throwing out computers people took dibbs on the Mac's before I can get my hands on one :-/ Oh well Im sure I can get an Old Mac to play around with.

Personally I have no problems with any OS except Windows ME. *to tramatic experience* I really would like to try other OS instead of stareing all day at a Windows screen.
And last, but not lease for now: Windows 98:
I love Windows 98, but I'd say if I had the chance to upgrade my computers RAM and processor to 500MHz and 250MB RAM, I would definitely want to get Windows XP.
Windows XP is not for older systems. Windows 98 is for any system that still runs at 90MHz with a whopping 40MB of RAM.

But, that’s what I say.

I am really disappointed that Microsoft is going to take Windows 98 and SE updated off the web. But its their server, there choice, what are you going to do about it?
I've tried LINUX, Win 3.0/3.1/WFW/85/98/2000/ME/XP and used an Apple Mac a few times.

The problem with LINUX is that very few people use it (or can even teach you how). I tried it once, it was ok but installing anything just made no sense (dependancies, etc.).

I do use Firefox / OpenOffice etc. for the functions it has and the cost (MS office student & teacher edition costs £110 where I work).

Steelegbr:
MS Office is around $300 here, but anyone who can afford it, its worth it. You can find used copies on Ebay for a much lower price, or find the older versions for an even lower price.

98SE was good until microsoft decided to fix it so they created ME.
W2K was based on NT and it was also good until microsoft decided to fix it & created XP.
Notice how only ME & XP have system restore, I wonder why? LOLI believe Windows ME should have been classified in the Win 9.x category. I can't get into a technical discussion on this point right now, but I've usually seen it grouped with 9.X, rather than later versions of Windows, in various OS discussions.

I used Win 98SE for years and still have it under a dual boot configuration on my main computer and on an old Pentuim. But, Win XP gets my vote; just the ClearType feature alone makes it more pleasant to use. Although ClearType was developed for laptop and LCD screens, I find that it also makes text look much better on CRT monitors.Quote

Soybean: (what an intresting Forum name)

The reason I classified Windows ME with XP and 2003 was because Windows ME has a similar driver compatilility. By that I mean that you can put in whatever USB device you want, and it will install it for you.

I'm not sure what you mean by "ClearType", but I think you mean that Windows XP has a cleaner look. I do think that the Windows XP look should be used for LCD (what I am using now) and laptop screens. The look just isnt as great on a regular monitor, but it still is clear.Quote

Fed:
You have an excellent point, makes you wonder. System Restore in Windows XP and ME, some similarities. Im sure it was just so Microsoft could test this feature. Did you hear about the update for Windows ME system restore? There was a really BIG error in it.

It does seem like it was a fix and re-create operation, but aren't all OS's like that?I always liked OS/2 and in fact still occassionally run OS/2 Warp 4 to remind myself what I'm missing. IBM was on the right track when they had written the original code for what turned out to be WinNT 4. Too bad they couldn't figure out how to market PCs, after all they were a BIG IRON shop in those days.

After Microsoft and IBM went their separate ways, IBM was restricted to running programs that were then current on OS/2, leaving users stuck on VB4, Word 2.0 etc. Windows took off, IBM crashed and burned and the rest is history. Still one of the best OSes ever produced.

Sidewinder:
To tell you the truth, I dont have a responce for your answer. I have never used OS/2, its no longer on the market.

Is it downloadable?OS/2 is not downloadable. Support is being phased out in 2006. It was good OS with excellent script support (REXX) which came from the IBM VM/CMS mainframe operating system. REXX later became supported on PC-DOS 7.0

You can find a brief history of the OS at OS/2 Warp

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Windows...or hardly nothing....well maybe a little something....but in any case companies other than Microsoft have built better OSes and part of the fun is giving them a spin around the block.

Happy Computing. 8-)
I used, and loved, OS/2. I have one system running eComstation, which is the updated version.

Solve : local internet access privacy?

Answer»

Does anyone know: I live in a small town and am wondering if my local internet access provider can see what I search for on the internet. Do they have the ABILITY to see my internet history usage or even view the same thing in real time that I am seeing? Thanks

Joets4078..... This question has been asked a NUMBER of times before ......
A quick answer to your question is YES
Normally , your ISP would not monitor your internet activities.....unless instructed to do so by some law enforcement agency or they had recieved complaints that you had been SENDING out spam.
Do they have a history of your activities ...yes ......
Could they see what you are viewing .......( if they had been instructed to do so )...yes......
I would suspect that most ISP s would have a policy which would not allow your viewing history to be VIEWED and or shared ....but if the ISP was very small and employeed the local "NOSEY parker" ....anything is possible.

Solve : Who is??

Answer»

How the *censored* can I get personal details taken off the 'who is?' site? I need to do this urgently. Is there any way?Have a read:

http://www.betterwhois.com/domainhijacking.htm

Are you the former owner of the domain name or what?Does your domain registration service offer private registration? I KNOW godday.com offers this, for an EXTRA charge of $1.95/yr. A private registration shields your personal information from public view. I was hoping I could just throw a brick through some company's window to get my details taken off but I GUESS I'll have a look at what the domain registrar's say.

The reason I need the information taken off is because there's some total fruitcake who'll do bad things to me if he finds me and my friggin' address is there for all to see. By the way, not that any of you care, this man I'm talking about is a local celebrity who I'm being sued by for libel. It doesn't offer it, can I switch registrars and get this option?MH1....... It sounds to me like you should be looking for a good Lawyer ........
and how about this ....take down the site that is causing the issues.
If your currently being sued by this person , then it's fair to say that they already know who you are and where you are .

dl65 Quote

It doesn't offer it, can I switch registrars and get this option?
Yes, you could switch registrars. But, I'd HEED dl65's advise.
I was exaggerating.

So, how exactly do I transfer a domain to this godday.com?Have you visited the site? They mention transfers right on the home PAGE. The main page for transfers seems to be this one: https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/transfers/landing.asp?se=%2B&ci=6349Done and done.

You mean IMAGE mapping, right? It's been a long time since I gained some familiarity with that technique, so I may be wrong, but your statement seems to make no sense. The image mapping coding in the html file is applied to the image to which it pertains. So, I don't see how it can SOMEHOW drift away from the image. Can you clarify this? How about posting the website address?

Solve : Flickering Monitor??

Answer»

I recently BOUGHT a new NEC monitor for my HP Pavillion a1330 PC, and within the last few weeks there's been a few light scanlines running through it, graphics seem to flicker, shift in pixels quickly, and text quivers. This is VERY annoying, and not what I was led to expect from a top of the line screen. I've checked CONNECTING wires, looked around the general monitor for any chips, loose wires, etc. but haven't found anything out of the ordinary with it. Tips/ideas on how to GET rid of this constant quivering my screen seems to be doing? If you've just bought this new, then it'll be under warranty, yes? Don't mess with it. Check that your old monitor doesn't display the same symptoms (which would indicate that your graphics card is at fault). If it doesn't then call on that warranty.Check around the area also... Is this monitor on a metal shelf? Do you have (I think it's a) HALOGEN light near the computer?

FlameI don't have another monitor to test with, unfortunately..my old computer was an ancient Gateway flatscreen with the computer itself built into the monitor. And I believe it's under warranty, so I'll go check that out. Thanks.

LOL! I know! More money for themselves! He's SERIOUS. And I agree. I read it earlier today and GAVE it no thought other than the usual Internet headaches. But now that he mentions it...Well, when you think about it, it's perfectly logical. What better way to make money than to hide it?

FlameWe pay for the ISP, that's the fee that covers the cost. So we're already paying for e-mails, just by another name. It's like taxes, they hide them and we pay without knowing we're paying it. The moment people agree to pay for e-mails separetely, it'll never be free again. Any tax on e-mail or online services should be avoided at all costs. Remember when ATMS first came out? The banks said it'd free their people to help customers, so there was no charge. Then they started charging once we got used to USING it!

We should change the way email is exchanged. Only pre approved or subscribed to email is to be sent otherwise the sender pays for the bandwidth and the traffic on the information highway. Between the USPS and email it hard to tell who traffics in more junk

Solve : power on off button replacement?

Answer»

Help! My wife turned her computer off the proper way and now it will not turn back on. I (like a fool) thought it was the on off button. I tried to remove the on off button and broke it, does ANYONE know where i can GET a replacement? It is an e-machine.

Thanks,
alamo55Dilbert will have to have instruct on eMachines.Contact the computer manufacturer for information for replacements.Quote

Dilbert will have to have instruct on eMachines.

*ahem*

1. Remove "Hard Drive" A, "CD-ROM" B, "Floppy" C, and (if you have purchased ONE) "Video card" D from "Computer" E.
2. Insert "Computer" E into "Trash" F.
3. Purchase "Real Computer" G.
4. Insert "Hard Drive" A into "Real Computer" G as a "Slave" A2.
5. Copy all needed documents from "Hard Drive" A to "Real Computer's Hard Drive" H.
6. Format "Hard Drive" A.
7. If possible, insert "CD-ROM" B, "Floppy" C, and (if you have purchased one) "Video card" D into "Real Computer" G.

This may sound toungue-in-cheek, but since E-Machines was bought out by Gateway I doubt you can get a replacement. Thanks for the reply -
I have checked the manu web site and they do not show a replacement.
I thought about buying a replacement case as suggested was just hoping I could save time by just replacing the part I needed.
I tried RADIO Shack but they did not have the right part.

Thanks,
alamo55
If you're happy with something that doesn't fit exactly in the position of the proper switch, any old "hold on" switch from Tandy/Radio Shack/Maplin will do.Thanks,

I found 3 on RS web site I figure one must work.

Go for the highest current rating switch.Ok, I think with all of your help I am close! One last question "robpomeroy" you mention go for the highest rating switch, here is what I am looking at, what one would you suggest? Two are 3 amps 125vac SPST, one is 3 amps 125vac SPDT and the last is 3 amps 250vac SPST. I have no idea what the SPST or SPDT stand for.

ThanksSPST = single pole, single throw
SPDT = single pole, double throw

A "double throw" switch has two independent circuits that are switched simultaneously. You only need a SPST switch.

Whether 3 amps will be enough, I'm not sure. It depends (obviously) on the current that goes through the switch. I think that most motherboard/PSU setups now send very little current to the front power switch, but I could be wrong about this. It is not something I've ever tested.

All I can suggest is just try the 3A 125V SPST switch and see if it melts or sparks when you first press it. You should be fine with that though.

Caveat: my electronics is very rusty.robpomery, Thank you for all your help I will let u know how it works.

alamo55Ok, I need more help Please. I repleaced the on off switch and the power supply but still the PC will not turn on. All I get is a little green light on the mother board. Is there something that I am missing or do I need to replace the motherboard?

ThanksThat doesn't sound promising. Are you sure that everything is connected as per your motherboard manual? REDUCE the installation to the minimum components necessary to run. Ensure that any supplementary processor power supply is connected (usually a 4-pin or 2-pin square plug/socket). Take out all bar one stick of memory, etc.Ok, I double even triple checked all connections and still nothing. At this point I am thinking a new computer may be easier and just switch the hard drive from this one to the new one. Would that cause any problems with the new computer?

alamo55You cannot move a primary hard drive from one computer to another and expect the operating system to boot up okay (unless the two computers comprise identical hardware). But you would be able to add the old hard drive as a slave to the new system in order to get the data off it.

Personally I would do more testing before giving up. Last time I had a non-booting PC, it was a faulty sound card that was preventing it from starting up.

Solve : system 32 launching?

Answer»

each TIME a restart my computer, the systen32 file launches. Can anyone
tell me if this is a sign of a problem or why this had started happening?
I'm not very computer savy so I have no idea why tihs is happening!1. What is your OS
2. What, if any, error messages are you getting
3. What specific file are you referring to
4. System32 should be a folder, not a file
5. Most 32 bit drivers are loaded from this folderI"m sorry, I should have told you Windows XP.
Also I am not getting any error messages, just the whole folder is appearing with all the files in there.

I attemped to click on help, but did get a message then, from my Norton
saying something about blocking access. It wouldn't allow me to get to the help screen.
The Norton Antivirsu says Malisicious script detected
High Risk
Your computer is halted & need to do something about this script
Then it says bocked-recommended
ThanksIf Norton is detecting something, try this. Turn off system restore. Reboot to SAFE mode and RUN your AV. You can re-enable system restore after everything comes up clean.Download WinPatrol there will be an option for System startup it will let you disable any kind of application that will run at the startup

I had this problem before but it just VANISH somehow

Solve : blocking access by teenager?

Answer»

I have passwords set up on my computer, and had myself as administrator. However my TEENAGE son who is more computer -savvy than me, has managed to get around the password, and make himself the administrator, so I have no control over what he is doing. I want to block his access to online computer GAMES (Runescape) and MSN chat, since he is wasting time on these, when he is supposedly doing research for his school assignments. I can't watch him continually, and he switches screens when I appear, to look like he's working. I'm sure there are many other frazzled parents trying to keep their kids focussed on their studies. HELP!If he switches screens, a quick glance at the toolbar at the bottom of the screen will show what he's really doing online. Also, You can click on View and History to see what he WAS doing. If there's anything wrong, or if the history is blank, I say take away his Internet connection. If it's his computer, disable the modem. Unplug it, or if it's wireless, just take the card out. If it's your computer, forbid him from using the internet, and if he breaks the rules, take away priveleges, such as driving if applicable, or allowance, or after-school activities. Make breaking the rules = bad for him.

I say this as a teen. I've seen friends whose lives were destroyed looking up porn. I'm assuming that's what he was doing; why else would he try to hide it, after all? If it is pornography you find, take huge steps to make sure that he stops. His life is at stake here, whether he knows it or not. Now, OK, I say don't be too harsh on him. I mean, don't make him take therapy or something like that. You can't reprogram a teen's desires. But he may be overdue for a long talk. Make sure your kid becomes the man you want him to be. It seems he is at a critical juncture in his life.

If it's not *censored*, but just gaming when he should be working, I suggest TAKING the steps I mentioned for if it's your computer, i.e "take away priveleges, such as driving if applicable, or allowance, or after-school activities."

Good luck.

EDIT: On Internet Explorer, the icon with the clock and the arrow brings it up. On FireFox, it's View > Sidebar > History. It differs from browser to browser. If you scroll down in this link it looks like it will block msn chat for 28 days.
Combining that with a couple of threats about runscape may shake him up enough.

R0SSWhat was easy?Try unhooking the modem and taking it with you when you're not on the computer. Hide the keyboard. Remove the memory sticks. Take away a cable.

Now if I may...

If you have a teenager who is deliberately going behind your back to break the rules you have set out, and the only solution you can think to seek out is tech advice from us, you have more problems than just those related to your computer. I have asked on other forums but never get help so here goes. I have windows XP & cable internet. I got a new fax & INSTALLED it & now when I turn on my computer I have to go thu admin to log on w/PW which takes alot longer. I know I used to turn on my computer & there was my DESKTOP & I just clicked on Int explorer to go to site. There's got to be some way to get it back but I can't figure out how, not a real brain w/computers that's why I love forums like this. :-?Is this what you are looking for http://www.windowsitpro.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=24936&DisplayTab=Article ?

You can also do that change with TweakUI if I am not mistaken. Thanks alot, I did that & 1st a box came up when I LOGGED on that sd "unable to log on due to a user restriction" but I clicked anyway & could do it. The thing that gets me is I always just started w/my start page not admin & that all changed. It was driving me crazy but I'll just do it that way, don't need my PW anymore anyway. This all seemed to happen after I enstalled the new fax. As you can tell I'm no computer wiz, I can't even get my fav into alph order there's no place to do it, I used to just right click & do it but can't now. Oh well I appreciate you TAKING the time to answer.redjoy.......

your pc is using a H/S cable connection ....... and your fax machine requires a regular telephone connection ......... What have I missed ?

Solve : web page partial print only - help...?

Answer»

I am a housewife with very little computer EXPERIENCE. I just BOUGHT a used CANON imageclass mp360 printer and installed it with the disk it came with. I am trying to do a course by distance education and I have to download lots of stuff from the web - mostly from the RBA sight (reserve bank of australia). and places like www.budget.gov.au
The problem is that some parts of some pages are missing when I print them. I have printed a test page and that was fine and I updated my computer from the microsoft website.
Do you think there is a problem with the printer I bought? I also downloaded this extra software on the printer disk called something like web printing. But this is not an option when I try to print from these websites. I can't get to the webprint button from the document. I have also tried saving to a word document, but the same thing happens.
Any suggestions would be welcome. Sincerely, MArissaWhat do you mean? Is it CHOPPING off a bit of text on the right side?

FlameNo, parts of the middle of the text are missing. I can't see why - the text on the internet does not look any different, no underlining, highlights, graph or whatever. Sometimes half of the last sentence is there, as in I see the top of the LETTERS, but not the bottom. I was thinking this is maybe some kind of memory problem, or maybe something in my computer is not compatible with this (IBM, says netvista on the box, uses windows 2000), but I really have zero experience with computers.Try another printer. Did you correctly install software for the printer?

FlameDear Flame,
Thank you for your effort. Someone in a shop here told me not to do fast printing on internet stuff and just to print normal mode. He said the fast printing method often lost information. I did this and now it works. Thanks again. Please pass on the info if anyone else has this problem. It was very frustrating.
Sincerely, Marissa

Solve : Blurred text (perhaps resolution?)?

Answer»

Sorry - I didn't really know where to put this.

So, the problem is - I'm not really used to this new computer I got only very recently. It's a 17" flatron LJ monitor, using XP - which is pretty much the same as my old computer minus the flatter screen 9its not one of those fancy flat screen LCDs or whatever they are, it's just a flatron.

When viewing a WEBPAGE through both IE and Firefox, the smaller text (which should be a fine print) seems blurred - like it's larger than it should be;

like this:

http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/5370/large1xf.jpg

That's a direct image of what it LOOKS like on my screen 1024x768

On my old pc, when looking at that same image - it looks right - but on this pc it looks blurred.

can anybody help?Well, it shows fine for me. You can't harm your computer by turning it up a few notches. Why not try that and let me know how it went?

Also, you said the computer is new. Is the monitor new as well? If so, then try turning up the resolution as well as the color depth. If that doesn't work, let us know. 8-)I was in bed last night and thought to myself "these PEOPLE aren't going to see how blurred the text is because it's only showing on MY computer"

D'oh

So yeah, it looks fine for you - but blurred for me.

The monitor is new. I'll FIDDLE around with it and let you know how I go.

Thanks for responding.Being a picture (screenshot) others can see the problem too.
It looks blurred to me.
I have the same complaint about mine but it's just not bad enough to spend time on.
I'd be very interested to hear if you find out anything.Sorry, Fed, but the only blurriness I see is the natural distortion of a jpg...I don't know if this will help but do you have Cleartype enabled?I was gonna suggest the same THING goto windows doload and get "cleartype tuner" fixed me right up

how to solve this problem?

Is it due to EXCESSIVE printing?

Thanksshouvik...... I'm not entirely clear on what your issue is ......... Is your concern that the document being printed ....isnt being printed or are you questioning why ...it starts to print and then the paper feed stops and then begins to move again ? If its the LATER , it's PROBABLY that the printer spooler is full and once it is emptied it begins to print again .

Solve : Can you Overclock a Dell??

Answer»

Does anyone know if you can overclock a dell? I have a Dell Dimension L900CXE that I’m just messing AROUND with until i get my new computer. I've heard that its possible but nobody has a real answer. If anyone KNOWS how please let me know, if there is a site that can help me please direct me to it. Thanks! This may sound dumb, but what's overclocking? I got that with an old video card and XP didn't run. I ended up upgrading to what I have now.The motherboards are not geared for overclocking. You may get some kind of boost with a software solution, but if you want to overclock and burn up a machine possibly, try another board AND a processor that is better for overclocking.Overclocking is something people do to their processor and other hardware to make them faster. Yeah I figured that could happen but I just wanted to mess around with it. Thanks!I believe P3's had locked MULTIPLIERS as well. So between the MB and the CPU that's 2 BIG strikes. So people make their boards go faster than intended... sounds stupid. If you fry the motherboard... most great video cards are cheaper. So I don't see the point. No offense, it just baffles me that someone would want to take that RISK. Again, please don't be offended, I don't mean you personally.Don’t worry man. This is just a TEST. If I mess it up its ok because I got a really cool computer coming soon. Later!

Solve : !!the parameter is incorrect!!?

Answer»

I had a problem when trying to copy some mixed files from a DVD (D:) to my computer (C:). It was working FINE when i moved the first few files. I got all the word documents and half of my music files but something strange happened while i was transfering. The disk drive got 'stuck' or something. It continued to make noise even when no work was being done and i couldnt EJECT it. I EVENTUALLY had to RESTART the computer to get it to stop. When i went BACK to what i was doing, none of my files would copy (move) over. It kept saying "cannot read from the source file or disk" or "the parameter is incorrect" This repeated for all of the rest of my music files and all of my picture files. I am not sure if this means something happened to the disk while i was using it or if there was an error on it before i got it but i thought maybe it was worth a shot to ask. Give me a holler if you have any advice for me. I might just need to make another copy of the DVD.Look what I found on google in < 5 secconds:

Solve : Random Computer Crashes?

Answer»

I promise. that I will fly out to whoever helps me fix my computer and marry them!

-My computer randomly shuts down, sometimes up to 4 times an hour. The problem seems to have started as best I can tell after I installed service pack 2 on my Windows XP system to use my families wireless internet. I cannot, however, remove service pack 2. It just won't let me. My compter has yet to shut down if I am disconnected from all wireless internets. When I reboot, the black startup screen says that it may be a problem with newly installed hardware, to which I don't think I have any new hardware. Sometimes, when i rebot, my computer detects newly installed ethernet hardware, to which I don't think I have done anything with (since I don't even know what it is!) When I run the Windows Error report it says that the problem is from the IntelPro Wireless Software. So I DOWNLOADED what it told me to, with no success. Any thoughts?? I would greatly appreciate any help!Renew the computer again because there are so many corruption in your PCQuote

Now wait a second... We haven't seen a photo... that could just as easily be a threat as a promise!

From the REST of your descriptio, it sounds like you've got some FAULTY network hardware. Do you happen to know what kind of network device you're using - i.e. PCI card, onboard, PCMCIA (laptops only) or USB?

How long have you had this computer? Did it come with the network hardware already installed?

Where did you obtain service pack 2 from? Do you have your original Windows XP restore CD?Elix- Thank you for your help! By renewing the computer- does that mean to just clear everything off and RESTART it like when I first got it? Sorry to be annoying with my computer ignorance!

Robpomeroy- On my device manager it lists Network adapters it lists the Network Adapters as 1394 Net Adapter, Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Desktop Adapter, and Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection. It also lists PCMCIA adapters as Ricoh R/RL/5D476(II) which is listed twice. When I click on them it says they are each “working properly” The only thing I installed is Intel PROSet/Wireless Software version 9.0.1.0-generic TIC 90281 at the recommendation of the Microsoft error report. So I’m pretty sure all the network adapters came installed.

I’ve had my computer for about 2 years and it is no longer under warrantee. I have the application and drivers CD, the operating system CD, and boot up DISK made by a friend for me during another computer problem. I got service pack 2 from the Microsoft Website and installed it myself.

Thank you so much!

PS. I don’t think it would be a threat
Kate, at this stage, it might be kinder to your PC to do a complete reinstall.

If you want to soldier on, try getting the very latest drivers for your wireless network card using >this link<. Before you install them, go to Start-->Control panel-->(switch to classic view if necessary)-->System-->Hardware-->Device manager.

In Device Manger, go to Network Adapters, find the Intel 2200BG, right-click on it, choose properties-->Driver-->Uninstall.

Having uninstalled the driver, try installing the one downloaded from Intel. Report back.

I'd have the proposal at the ready, but I think my wife might disapprove.

Solve : Site with php extension?

Answer»

Some site has a .php extention instead of .html .

Does that specifically signifies anything? It means that the page is probebly useing PHP, see http://www.php.net.Yup. >PHP< MAKES it possible to run programs on web servers so that pages are automatically changed. If you LOOK at the URLs on this site, you'll see a ".cgi" in there instead of ".html". CGI TENDS to INDICATE Perl programming - Perl is a scripting language in much the same way that PHP is.

Scripting is necessary, because it would be utterly impossible, for example, for someone to re-write all the relevant pages on this site, every time someone posted a MESSAGE...

Solve : Epson Printer Won't Feed Paper?

Answer»

My Epson Color 777 won't "grab" and feed the paper. No software problems. Red error LIGHT is on solid. This normally indicates one of the ink cartridges is out or a paper jam. Neither is the case.

Printer ATTEMPTS to PRINT, but paper is never fed down to do so.

Solve : display jumping around?

Answer»

my monitor display is jumping around -- like the picture gets bigger and smaller. Then it will calm down and look normal for AWHILE. Then start to jump again. Any help? Thanks! How about a few clues? I am all guessed out today.

What make/model?
How old?
What happened prior to this?
Video adapter?
What happens with this monitor on another computer?
What happens with another monitor on this computer?
Anything ELSE relevant?Sounds like a dying monitor. Try a different monitor on that PC - or try that monitor on a different PC. What results do you get?sorry -- i'm not much of a computer person, but here goes....
monitor is Viewsonic E790
about 10 years old
everything has been great until this jumping
i only have the one computer & one monitor, so no idea what might happen if switchedTEN YEARS OLD! Blimey - that monitor doesn't owe you anything! Bin it.Agreed. You have gotten your money's worth. You need a new monitor.Well, it's not really ten years old, but I know it's more than five. Probably around seven, but I'm guessing you would GIVE the same advice -- to chuck it. How LONG do you think monitors should last?
Thanks for input.Any bit of IT hardware that lasts more than three years is doing well. This is a very fast-moving consumer sector.

Monitors that display these symptoms of old age can probably be repaired but when you compare the repair costs (£100 for a new board plus labour) with the cost of a new 17" monitor (£100), it's rarely worth saving the old one...I would try it on another computer as suggested before ditching it.
Surely you know someone else whp OWNS a computer.

Solve : Problem with CD-station?

Answer»

I wanted to select pictures for an album and tried to look at the pictures on a CD-ROM on my PC. The selection of the pictures started to go very slowly and after some minutes the CD-station did not seem to work. I am SORRY, but I cannot describe it better.
I decided it was something wrong with the CD-station, a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive marked Model LTC-48161H. I replaced this CD-station with an old Plextor CD-R PX-W1610A and this CD-station seemed to work ok for a while. HOWEVER, when I tried to look at the pictures the same problem started again.
I have a Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo L computer a little less than 3 years old. OPERATING system XP Home and I am not on a network.

Is it possible that some error on the CD can modify or corrupt the software in the CD-station(if it has software)? If that is so, is it possible to correct the software of the station?

I have already ordered a new CD-station, but don't like to throw the old one away if it can be repaired.

What should I do with the picture CD-ROM? It looks dangerous to me but is FILLED with pictures for a holiday.

I do not understand your YaBBC tags and neither the Smilies. Should I use them?

Thank you
Knut

Solve : MB fried, Need data from HD's?

Answer»

My last computer has been sitting in my garage for the last 2 years or so. The motherboard fried and it will no longer turn on. I don't really care about getting the thing working again, but I do care about getting all of the music, pictures and imported VIDEO clips off of my hard drives and burned on to discs. Obviously, I did not have it all backed up. So, my questions is this: I have a laptop now. I want to take the hard drives (there are two of them in my old computer) and get the data off of them. How do I go about doing this? My old computer ran on Win Prof 2000. I had two 40G HD's, one of them was partioned and the other was just used for data storage only... but I have data that'd I'd like from both HD's. I can't think of what else to say. If I could even be steered to a How To book or something that put me on the right track, I'd APPRECIATE it. I can always replace the music I suppose, but I had a BOAT load of pictures and video clips from trips with friends that if I can't get off of the HD's I will have lost them forever.

Ok, well...even if you can't help me, I appreciate the time you spent reading this.

Thanks-A laptop seems a long way around the SOLUTION. How about comandeering a friend with a desktop with a CDRW drive, slave the drives one at a time on his machine and burning to CD all that you need? A simple solution. DVD's could be used if the technology is there as well. How about an external hard drive CASE with USB interface?

Solve : multiple monitor settings?

Answer»

Im having trouble saving my monitor settings, Im running a 2.8 Ghz DUAL core pentiumd w/ 2Gigs ddr2 ram. ok, Igot one ati x600 agp card w/ dvi output and an-vidia pci card both 256 Mb. The problem is I run a 32in lcd panel from the ata card and a 17 in flat panel on the n-vid card. Every TIME I BOOT the settings for th ati card go to 800x600 and i get a message on the flat panel that says that at it cant display tht mode and then goes to the panels native res 10--x12--. At that point i have to reset the settings the large display to 1390x728. every things good till I reboot. Nebody got any ideasDo you have the latest drivers for your video card? Also, can your video card support such extreme resolutions? If so on both counts, KNOW that you have to REINSTALL the drivers every time you change video cards. If you don't, you will run into problems like the one you see before you.

Geez, a 32-inch? How big a display do you need?!?

Solve : Printers Font Size?

Answer»

Hope you folks will be PATIENT with me,as I am new to this sort of thing.
I have this new HP Photosmart Printer 3210 and when I copy an ARTICLE the PRINTING is so small you need a magnifying glass to read it. I have search everywhere but cannot find where to make the fonts larger. I have the TEXT Size on the computer) marked for the largest but that doesn't do a thing for the printer. Any suggestions of where I should search?Copying text on to word application and resizing it from a tool barHP Photosmart 3210 All-in-One: Manual download.

[ch1046]Is it when you're using the scanner to copy STUFF that it comes out too small?Yes, when I copy an article from the computer the print is very small. I have the text size from view set on large but I think that is only for the computer, right?
