Solve : Hacking into Old Computer!!? |

Answer» I was just given the task by my boss to clean up an old computer that has been sitting out for God knows how long. I set it up and it came on. . . good news!! The problem I have is that I need a password to get in and work on it. Sadly no one in the office knows it, as a matter of fact we aren't really sure if the PERSON who used to work on it is still with us. GUESS!!! Guess what?? The password LOL,Yes, then, I should start NOW see if I find it before I die. LOL Do we get a hint on the operating system?You got to guess that also!!! I had to physically pull the computer appart. Change the BIOS CONF jumper and enter in maintenance mode. I got in and NOW it is giving me trouble with the hardware (mouse and keyboard) RRRR I'll keep troubleshooting until I FIGURE it out.Sorry, but we cannot help you to "HACK" your way into a computer. We have no proof that you're not trying to go into someone else's computer, so sorry, but we have to stick by the rules. Good luck. FlameJo ...... So you RESET the Cmos and have now removed the admin password . It sounds like that machine could have A P3 .....maybe 1000ghz processor with 128 mb of ram and running win 2k....... What issue are you running into with the keyboard and mouse ? dl65 I actually got it squared out. I had to reboot it about three times but it came back ok. The mouse and keyboard worked fine. I'm still working on it as far as cleaning it out but otherwise I think I survived. Thank you so much for your help everyone, you managed not to let me look like a total idiot in front of my boss. Answer» I have heard for the longest time that Macs suck, what I want to know is why does everybody say that Macs suck? Is it the operating system?No features, no compatibility, etc. You don't have REALLY any control over a Mac, and it's impossible to get what you want out of it, especially when there's no thrid party software for it. Macintoshes are not targeted for viruses, adware, or spyware because they are not compatible with running the files needed to infect most computes. Sure, viruses can be downloaded, but not activated within a Mac. People don’t target Macs because they are not often used. They are only good for office COMPUTERS. I would die if my school started replacing them. If I were a virus maker, or a hacker, I would want to target the most used OS and PC’s on earth, Microsoft and comp’s that run with Intel’s or Athlon’s (yes, I know that for the first time, the Intel Chip is being locked down to eak out a miserable existence INSIDE, please hold your breath, a MAC) I have a Mac, and the only thing I am impressed with is the voice reorganization programs. (Yes, that’s right, I talk to my computer. It can ALSO sing, but that’s not one bit useful).(that was a quote from myself, and yes, I do talk to my Mac. There might be some limitations, but it might be the same. Did you search Google for that?Not yet, been busy setting up a home network. I search it tommorow at school.Installing XP on Macs was a big challenge which has only just been overcome this year. The indications from Apple now are that they will make it easier for their hardware to run MS Windows - whether people will do it remains to be seen. The main problem with Macs is that they are not the computer system that everyone uses. PCs are on most people's desks, so software and hardware manufacturers concentrate their efforts on PCs. Why build Mac stuff when there are far fewer customers? But Macs have traditionally held sway in the area of graphic DESIGN - and they still do. Go to any professional printing or publishing house, and you will find a high concentration of Macs, with state of the art graphics software and hardware. Their users swear by them. |

Solve : Web pages print too small? |

Answer» I have downloaded and installed Windows INTERNET Explorer 7 Beta 2 in order to properly size Web pages that I choose to print out. I printed a test Web page and indeed the text is correctly sized on the paper but now the print size is much too small. I have selected the Largest Text Size on my IE browser but still the print turns out small. How do I enlarge the text size so that it is easier to read on the paper that I print from a Web page? Any suggestions will be most appreciated. Thanks. |

The best part is the fact that it has a bunch or drivers that can be automatically detected and I can just connect my flash drive no problem at all. LOLI believe Windows ME should have been classified in the Win 9.x category. I can't get into a technical discussion on this point right now, but I've usually seen it grouped with 9.X, rather than later versions of Windows, in various OS discussions. I used Win 98SE for years and still have it under a dual boot configuration on my main computer and on an old Pentuim. But, Win XP gets my vote; just the ClearType feature alone makes it more pleasant to use. Although ClearType was developed for laptop and LCD screens, I find that it also makes text look much better on CRT monitors.Quote I believe Windows ME should have been classified in the Win 9.x category. I do think that the Windows XP look should be used for LCD (what I am using now) and laptop screens. I have never used OS/2, its no longer on the market. Is it downloadable?OS/2 is not downloadable. Support is being phased out in 2006. It was good OS with excellent script support (REXX) which came from the IBM VM/CMS mainframe operating system. REXX later became supported on PC-DOS 7.0 You can find a brief history of the OS at OS/2 Warp Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Windows...or hardly nothing....well maybe a little something....but in any case companies other than Microsoft have built better OSes and part of the fun is giving them a spin around the block. What is the computer or motherboard make and model? Some details about the system, other problems, etc. could prove helpful.When I power up the pc, I do hear the some noise. I can hear the hard drive spinning I've checked the power supply and fan thing over the motherboard, and they are working. I don't hear any beeping noises, I do have access to the floppy and cd ROM they WORK. ( I can open and close the cd-rom)...I managed to get this info from the actually pc..the motherboard says P2XBL REV.D1 AGP1 The hard drive is a Western Digtal WD100 IDE hard drive 10.0 GB...its 400Mghz...memory not sure...not more than 256 though...When it did work it was quite fast.If your wondering how I got to this stage...Well I was on the net, and I closed a window...I got a blue page with some writting on the top of the screen..no more than two lines...It said something about if I haven't seen this msg before..there was mention of a crital error encounterd by the pc...I'm sorry I don't remember the exact message.Quote ..I got a blue page with some writting on the top of the screen..no more than two lines...It said something about if I haven't seen this msg before..there was mention of a crital error encounterd by the pc... Answer» [size=9]I recently BOUGHT a new NEC monitor for my HP Pavillion a1330 PC, and within the last few weeks there's been a few light scanlines running through it, graphics seem to flicker, shift in pixels quickly, and text quivers. This is VERY annoying, and not what I was led to expect from a top of the line screen. I've checked CONNECTING wires, looked around the general monitor for any chips, loose wires, etc. but haven't found anything out of the ordinary with it. Tips/ideas on how to GET rid of this constant quivering my screen seems to be doing?[/size]If you've just bought this new, then it'll be under warranty, yes? Don't mess with it. Check that your old monitor doesn't display the same symptoms (which would indicate that your graphics card is at fault). If it doesn't then call on that warranty.Check around the area also... Is this monitor on a metal shelf? Do you have (I think it's a) HALOGEN light near the computer? |

What better way to make money than to hide it? FlameWe pay for the ISP, that's the fee that covers the cost. So we're already paying for e-mails, just by another name. It's like taxes, they hide them and we pay without knowing we're paying it. The moment people agree to pay for e-mails separetely, it'll never be free again. Any tax on e-mail or online services should be avoided at all costs. Remember when ATMS first came out? The banks said it'd free their people to help customers, so there was no charge. Answer» Help! My wife turned her computer off the proper way and now it will not turn back on. I (like a fool) thought it was the on off button. I tried to remove the on off button and broke it, does ANYONE know where i can GET a replacement? It is an e-machine. Dilbert will have to have instruct on eMachines. *ahem* 1. Remove "Hard Drive" A, "CD-ROM" B, "Floppy" C, and (if you have purchased ONE) "Video card" D from "Computer" E. 2. Insert "Computer" E into "Trash" F. 3. Purchase "Real Computer" G. 4. Insert "Hard Drive" A into "Real Computer" G as a "Slave" A2. 5. Copy all needed documents from "Hard Drive" A to "Real Computer's Hard Drive" H. 6. Format "Hard Drive" A. 7. If possible, insert "CD-ROM" B, "Floppy" C, and (if you have purchased one) "Video card" D into "Real Computer" G. This may sound toungue-in-cheek, but since E-Machines was bought out by Gateway I doubt you can get a replacement. Thanks for the reply - I have checked the manu web site and they do not show a replacement. I thought about buying a replacement case as suggested was just hoping I could save time by just replacing the part I needed. I tried RADIO Shack but they did not have the right part. Thanks, alamo55 If you're happy with something that doesn't fit exactly in the position of the proper switch, any old "hold on" switch from Tandy/Radio Shack/Maplin will do.Thanks, I found 3 on RS web site I figure one must work. Go for the highest current rating switch.Ok, I think with all of your help I am close! One last question "robpomeroy" you mention go for the highest rating switch, here is what I am looking at, what one would you suggest? Two are 3 amps 125vac SPST, one is 3 amps 125vac SPDT and the last is 3 amps 250vac SPST. I have no idea what the SPST or SPDT stand for. ThanksSPST = single pole, single throw SPDT = single pole, double throw A "double throw" switch has two independent circuits that are switched simultaneously. You only need a SPST switch. Whether 3 amps will be enough, I'm not sure. It depends (obviously) on the current that goes through the switch. I think that most motherboard/PSU setups now send very little current to the front power switch, but I could be wrong about this. It is not something I've ever tested. All I can suggest is just try the 3A 125V SPST switch and see if it melts or sparks when you first press it. You should be fine with that though. Is there something that I am missing or do I need to replace the motherboard? ThanksThat doesn't sound promising. Are you sure that everything is connected as per your motherboard manual? REDUCE the installation to the minimum components necessary to run. Ensure that any supplementary processor power supply is connected (usually a 4-pin or 2-pin square plug/socket). Take out all bar one stick of memory, etc.Ok, I double even triple checked all connections and still nothing. At this point I am thinking a new computer may be easier and just switch the hard drive from this one to the new one. Would that cause any problems with the new computer? alamo55You cannot move a primary hard drive from one computer to another and expect the operating system to boot up okay (unless the two computers comprise identical hardware). But you would be able to add the old hard drive as a slave to the new system in order to get the data off it. Personally I would do more testing before giving up. Last time I had a non-booting PC, it was a faulty sound card that was preventing it from starting up. |

Answer» I have passwords set up on my computer, and had myself as administrator. However my TEENAGE son who is more computer -savvy than me, has managed to get around the password, and make himself the administrator, so I have no control over what he is doing. I want to block his access to online computer GAMES (Runescape) and MSN chat, since he is wasting time on these, when he is supposedly doing research for his school assignments. I can't watch him continually, and he switches screens when I appear, to look like he's working. I'm sure there are many other frazzled parents trying to keep their kids focussed on their studies. HELP!If he switches screens, a quick glance at the toolbar at the bottom of the screen will show what he's really doing online. Also, You can click on View and History to see what he WAS doing. If there's anything wrong, or if the history is blank, I say take away his Internet connection. If it's his computer, disable the modem. Unplug it, or if it's wireless, just take the card out. If it's your computer, forbid him from using the internet, and if he breaks the rules, take away priveleges, such as driving if applicable, or allowance, or after-school activities. Make breaking the rules = bad for him. I say this as a teen. I've seen friends whose lives were destroyed looking up porn. I'm assuming that's what he was doing; why else would he try to hide it, after all? If it is pornography you find, take huge steps to make sure that he stops. His life is at stake here, whether he knows it or not. Now, OK, I say don't be too harsh on him. I mean, don't make him take therapy or something like that. You can't reprogram a teen's desires. But he may be overdue for a long talk. Make sure your kid becomes the man you want him to be. It seems he is at a critical juncture in his life. LOL Easy R0SSWhat was easy?Try unhooking the modem and taking it with you when you're not on the computer. Hide the keyboard. Remove the memory sticks. Take away a cable. Now if I may... If you have a teenager who is deliberately going behind your back to break the rules you have set out, and the only solution you can think to seek out is tech advice from us, you have more problems than just those related to your computer. I got a new fax & INSTALLED it & now when I turn on my computer I have to go thu admin to log on w/PW which takes alot longer. Answer» CANON pixma ip1000 this is the deskjet printer i am using. but while printing it is not able to move the PAPER efficiently . that is, it is halting between printing, again moving the paper and again halting. how to solve this problem? Is your concern that the document being printed ....isnt being printed or are you questioning why ...it starts to print and then the paper feed stops and then begins to move again ? Thanks!This may sound dumb, but what's overclocking? I got that with an old video card and XP didn't run. I ended up upgrading to what I have now.The motherboards are not geared for overclocking. You may get some kind of boost with a software solution, but if you want to overclock and burn up a machine possibly, try another board AND a processor that is better for overclocking.Overclocking is something people do to their processor and other hardware to make them faster. Yeah I figured that could happen but I just wanted to mess around with it. Thanks!I believe P3's had locked MULTIPLIERS as well. So between the MB and the CPU that's 2 BIG strikes. So people make their boards go faster than intended... sounds stupid. If you fry the motherboard... most great video cards are cheaper. So I don't see the point. Answer» I had a problem when trying to copy some mixed files from a DVD (D:) to my computer (C:). It was working FINE when i moved the first few files. I got all the word documents and half of my music files but something strange happened while i was transfering. The disk drive got 'stuck' or something. It continued to make noise even when no work was being done and i couldnt EJECT it. I EVENTUALLY had to RESTART the computer to get it to stop. When i went BACK to what i was doing, none of my files would copy (move) over. It kept saying "cannot read from the source file or disk" or "the parameter is incorrect" This repeated for all of the rest of my music files and all of my picture files. I am not sure if this means something happened to the disk while i was using it or if there was an error on it before i got it but i thought maybe it was worth a shot to ask. It also lists PCMCIA adapters as Ricoh R/RL/5D476(II) which is listed twice. When I click on them it says they are each “working properly” The only thing I installed is Intel PROSet/Wireless Software version 9.0.1.0-generic TIC 90281 at the recommendation of the Microsoft error report. So I’m pretty sure all the network adapters came installed. I’ve had my computer for about 2 years and it is no longer under warrantee. I have the application and drivers CD, the operating system CD, and boot up DISK made by a friend for me during another computer problem. I got service pack 2 from the Microsoft Website and installed it myself. Thank you so much! PS. I don’t think it would be a threat Kate, at this stage, it might be kinder to your PC to do a complete reinstall. If you want to soldier on, try getting the very latest drivers for your wireless network card using >this link<. Before you install them, go to Start-->Control panel-->(switch to classic view if necessary)-->System-->Hardware-->Device manager. In Device Manger, go to Network Adapters, find the Intel 2200BG, right-click on it, choose properties-->Driver-->Uninstall. Having uninstalled the driver, try installing the one downloaded from Intel. Report back. I'd have the proposal at the ready, but I think my wife might disapprove. |

Answer» My last computer has been sitting in my garage for the last 2 years or so. The motherboard fried and it will no longer turn on. I don't really care about getting the thing working again, but I do care about getting all of the music, pictures and imported VIDEO clips off of my hard drives and burned on to discs. Obviously, I did not have it all backed up. So, my questions is this: I have a laptop now. I want to take the hard drives (there are two of them in my old computer) and get the data off of them. How do I go about doing this? My old computer ran on Win Prof 2000. I had two 40G HD's, one of them was partioned and the other was just used for data storage only... but I have data that'd I'd like from both HD's. I can't think of what else to say. If I could even be steered to a How To book or something that put me on the right track, I'd APPRECIATE it. I can always replace the music I suppose, but I had a BOAT load of pictures and video clips from trips with friends that if I can't get off of the HD's I will have lost them forever. |

Answer» Im having trouble saving my monitor settings, Im running a 2.8 Ghz DUAL core pentiumd w/ 2Gigs ddr2 ram. ok, Igot one ati x600 agp card w/ dvi output and an-vidia pci card both 256 Mb. The problem is I run a 32in lcd panel from the ata card and a 17 in flat panel on the n-vid card. Every TIME I BOOT the settings for th ati card go to 800x600 and i get a message on the flat panel that says that at it cant display tht mode and then goes to the panels native res 10--x12--. At that point i have to reset the settings the large display to 1390x728. every things good till I reboot. Nebody got any ideasDo you have the latest drivers for your video card? Also, can your video card support such extreme resolutions? If so on both counts, KNOW that you have to REINSTALL the drivers every time you change video cards. If you don't, you will run into problems like the one you see before you. |
