Solve : How to dust my PC?

By the way thanks for the link MASH, i'll definitely be using that later, because I need to install some RAM too for the first time.

No doubt i'll be making a post about that too later

My pleasure Ted.

It was a comedy. It was fiction. It was not a re-enactment. Reality and fiction are different. Oh, sorry. You never have agreed with that. The thing is I did not get around to CLEANING everything, but I got rid of most of it, so i'll leave it at that for now.
So i'm going to have to open it up again at some point...
There was not 1, not 2, but 3 fans in there!
1 lower one that was aimed at nothing in perticular, so I cleaned that one being the most simple.
Power supply fan and the fan on the motherboard where both at awkward positions.Quote

It was a comedy. It was fiction. Reality and fiction are different.

The reality was that there was a war in Korea, just as there have been wars on this planet.

The fiction was that actors repeated the reality by acting out a fiction.

In can find nothing comical about the real event, therefore there is nothing comic about the television series.

There is no comedy in killing.

When there are no more 'people' then they will not be able to fight with each other.

What level of civilisation would it take for there never to have ever been any fighting, or crime, anywhere on the planet?

Let us see if you can answer any question with an answer instead of with another diversion, question or avoidance of an answer.Quote

How would you have me treat a criminal?

How would you have Able treat Cain?

In a classless society should everything be 1st class, 2nd class or 3rd class?

Should we accept 1st world, 2nd world or 3rd world standards?

Why has the medical 'profession' dropped the Hippocratic oath?

Trick question: Do you think that prisons should be legalised?

How would you have me treat crows, sheep, cats, dogs, etc.?

What do you make of the saying, "Never marry outside your own church?" i.e. Never marry someone from a different church or 'faith'?

Why should there be so many different faiths and churches on the same planet instead of just one?

If there were to be just one should it comprise a moral minority or an immoral majority?

Do you prefer to think for yourself or would you have the church institutionalise you into a group collective?

Given that jesus was neither a Muslim nor a Buddhist, was 'he' 1. protestant, 2. catholic, or 3. jewish?

Would you crucify a WOMAN?

Does 'Strange Encounters of the Third Kind' refer to 1. male, 2. female, 3. a neutral state of being?

Why should some refer to Homo Sapiens as either homos or saps?Quote

Solve : Comp is picking up radio station?

Answer»

If you really WANT to fix this problem, then just swap sound cards, and see if that works :-/

FlameJust take the sound card out, move the speakers, and let's remove one variable at a time. I hope you can get talk radio on there while working. Oh, I just thought of something... Is this computer on a metal shelf?

FlameWell the legs of the desk are metal, the rest is wood.hm. Nevermind then... When did this start anyway?

FlameIt always did this. And how long has this been going on then?Which city and which radio station, Dorothy?

I would second what 2k_dummy says:
Quote

Are you using an UPS or surge suppressor with EMI/RFI suppression? If not, I suggest you get one.

It's probably coming in on the MAINS. You don't NEED a UPS, but a mains filter would probably help, particularly one with EMF (EMI in America?) filtering.

I've also read that a slightly CHEAPER solution is to get a ferrite ring (from Tandy/Radioshack/Maplin) and wrap the audio cable ROUND it a few times. I'm not into electronics so can't exactly explain why this works, but it would be cheaper than a surge protector, so you could try it first. If it has always done this then I suggest to you two things. (1) Contact the manufacturer (2) Buy a new card and see if that works.

I sent a print command to this printer when my DEFAULT printer was an HP deskjet 5550. Now when I TRY to print with my OKIDATA OL 410e, it prints out "Emulation Switching Memory Buffer" followed by 6 equally spaced columns of % characters all the way down the page. How can I reset my Okidata printer so it will print properly? Are the drivers for the NEW printer installed correctly?

Solve : Buzzing sound whenever mouse is moved?

Answer»

Okay, so here's the deal:

My ATI RADEON 9600 is like.. 2mm underneath my onboard sound hub

I downloaded the catalyst package and updated the drivers and software for the graphics card, ever since, whenever I move the mouse, I get a buzzing sound out of any speakers plugged into the speaker socket on the back, but all's fine on the hub on the front of the pc :S

It's driving me nuts.
I'm on:

Two Pentium 4 2.4ghz processors
512MB RAM
60GB HDD
ATI RADEON 9600 128MB graphics card
Realtek AC'97 onboard sound card

Help me pleeeeeeease!
Use the front 'hub'.

Can you roll back Windows to immediately before you replaced the Radeon drivers?

Try getting updated sound drivers from the website of your motherboard vendor. The Rad 9600 is a common budget card and this may well be a known problem that has already been fixed.Tried both - No luck. Then I checked another forum, and saw that it might be statical interference, so I decided to open the case and clean the components, then try to earth it with a stick

Problem solved. XD

Thanks for the help anyway

I can PLAY Fable again without BZZZZZZZZ everytime I turn to KILL something! "earth it with a stick"??!!!!Poking it with a stick. Probably removed excess electrical crap. Works for electronics usually o.oDoes it matter what tree this stick came from? Is OAK better at discharging static than ash?If I didnt know better, I'd say you were mocking me. XD

Anyways, may come in handy next time your Graphics/SOUNDCARD combo goes crazy Senile. Quote

If I didnt know better, I'd say you were mocking me. XD
Not at all - it just baffles me. I've never thought of sticks as being particularly conductive or good at absorbing electrical charges... But I'm no electronics whizz...
Me neither, but I did stay awake in Physics. Wood does not conduct. Maybe two wires were touching and you pushed them apart, or maybe you happened to bend the correct pin , or whatever. I wouldn't count on that working again. Then it's luck I guess XD

I was once told that to discharge an electrical thingybob, breaking the circuit of the conduction whatever (I'm a nerd, no electrician ). Using a non-conducting material, like a stick. Pot luck, I dunno. But it seems to have worked. 8-)Fed is an electrician. Maybe he has experience with using a stick. :-?I think you just got lucky Snagsy, I have no idea what you did to fix it. :-?INDEED. Lady luck must be smiling.. Now I dont have to fork out £13 for a semi-decent soundcard! Semi-decent? For thirteen quid? Presumably, you mean semi-decent and old?!lmfao @ poking it with a stick.
I used to use that expression when all serious attempts at a fix had failed.

Hey guys, i did my best to search for this topic and couldnt find it so PLEASE dont kill me if its already out there. OK, so im the PC wiz in my family which doesnt say much for the rest of them so whenever anythnig goes wrong they turn to me and i hate not knowing the solution. My problem is that my one brothers PC keeps shutting down whenever there is high bandwidth being used. Whenever we go to bittorrent anything or play a online masssive multi. E.I. World of Warcraft. its up and running for about 20 sec. before the whole machine restarts. I thought ok maybe a VIRUS so i formatted, but nothing. i thought ok maybe bad memory, so i switched chips, and nothing. Please can anyone out there throw me some kind of help.Is it the net connection or the increased processor graphics usage wearing away on a poor power supply? What machine make/model, and what make/model of PSU as well as other details about the machine, O/S, etc.Do you SEE a Blue Screen show up quickly?

Flameits a home built beauty. its all diff. parts. its like 4 years old and was WORKING perfect for all 4 years. the blue screen of death used to pop up when the prob. first started but its apparently to cool for that now. now it just goes right to restart.Entering shutdown -a in the Start>Run box may get you the bsod back. If it shuts down now without warning it's a hardware problem, overheating GFX card perhaps?Check your heatsink

Solve : Random files on desktop??

Answer»

Just wondering why and how these random files are on my desktop.

I USE firefox so by default downloaded files download to desktop, but I did not download them!

I thought it would be best if i did not delete them or move them. I've left them there for quite some TIME now, so i'm wondering what they are.

RAM files:
_NOIRSC_earlyyears
simulation
wdytya_census_16x9_nb

And a text document which is empty called
dxva_sig

And then a file called Logs that has a text document in it called cpu which is filled with computer jargen :-?

Scan for viruses and Spyware ASAP.

FlameI have, and theres no threats on my computer at all.
I use Norton AV, Spybot search&destroy and Microsoft AS. They are all kept up to date.
The only one that ever finds anything is Spybot. Finds things like DoubleClick, MediaPlex and FastClick etc..
But they always come back arfter a day or two.Do you have a GeForce 6600GT or similar? No, ATI Radeon X300SEAd-Aware SE Personal? That always works for me.

Ok i'll try it out, but do I delete these unkown files? desktop is full of clutter.I'm pretty certain that this isn't a malware issue. These files USUALLY appear after playing a video file via certain media players where certain graphics cards are INVOLVED. What media players do you use?Windows media player 10Try and take note of what you're doing when they appear and then track down their origins using FileMon.

Solve : Viewer Drop?

Answer»

What's up with the loss of viewers?! Back when we had the old forum we used to have TONS of posts everyday... I remember the hardware section had at least one whole page FULL of new posts... Now it's like 25% of a page... Not much activity ELSEWHERE either... What's going on?!

FlameI don't think the number of posts has changed much Flame, Admin (if he sees this) would have the figures.
If it has, it could be anything from the climate, different forum (text size) or even the registration requirement to post.Part of the problem may be the policy of registering before you can post. It may well cut down on the hit and RUNS, but many would be posters may be turned off. Then there is our lunatic spammer. Think about it, if you were new to the forums and started READING threads that have been hijacked for religious, political, or pornographic rantings, how long would you stick around?

Admin must be going nuts TRYING to track down all his IP addresses. Hopefully this will all end soon and someday we can all laugh about it. Until then we may have to endure the sounds of silence from new posters.

8-)Yeah. I remember him saying not too long ago that we were having low traffic... I guess it's becuase guest mode was turned off? :-?

Solve : Are CD files Retrievable??

Answer»

I have a question about CD's. One that may never have been asked, but I will. I transferred my own music from an LP to CD. I put it on a CD-RW disc. However, I accidently deleted some one the contents on the cd. My question is: Is it possible to retrieve anything off of this RW disc, as you would when retrieving files off an empty Hard Drive? :-/It's possible, depending on the write method used and if the DATA hasn't been overwritten. However, I don't know of any useful free/shareware utilities.
How valuable is the data? Now, I am not 100% sure the stuff you deleted is actually LOST. You can check, methinks, by using Windows Media Player to rip the music onto the hard drive. Even if you can't get all of it, whatever's left at least will go on the hard drive. After you have everything you can get, I suggest erasing the CD-RW and burning the copied files back onto the CD. If none of this works, then you'd have to get it back from the LP again. In fact, that may be necessary to recover the files you deleted.

Just a question: How did you accidentally DELETE part of the music?

Of course, the above advice won't DAMAGE anything further in any way. If it does, my advice is to STEP SLOWLY AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER. (Just kidding. )

Solve : IDX extenstion help??

Answer»

Using Nero to copy a CD that I made on my computer and not being connected to the Internet, I suddenly found most all of my audio files with an IDX extension that I don't know what to do with. Windows says they may not be safe to play anymore.

I LIVE in Laos as a teacher here, and don't have access to GOOD resources like people in developed countries have. I often use my songs to have my students practicing listening in class, and really would like to have those audio files.

I would be VERY appreciative to anyone with information that could help me.

Thank you,

Chris

Solve : error 44 dran?

Answer»

Hello: I just installed DSL from talk America to replace dial-up that we
had for years from AOL. The DSL works fine, except when I try to
configure the "aol" "my wife likes it" I SELECT DSL connection and follow
to the letter the quide steps supplied by aol. I keep getting a dial-up
server, of which I disabled in system config. To make a long story short
I spent 2 hours on the phone with aol teck support and the final answere was
uninstall and reinstall,I told her I could have done that two hours ago. As luck
would have it,I uninstalled, reinstalled aol and I keep getting the same error.
I even disable my firewall, and tried it that way, still the same,if anybody has
any ideas,I would like to hear them,I've tried every thing that I know.

Thanks ahead
Don

HP a1314n comp. amd dual-core, 2 gbit ram, 250gbit hd,talk america dsl, if
I left anything out please advise me. also winxp proI'm not familiar with US providers but are you saying that Internet Explorer always attempts to use the old AOL dialup setting rather than the new Talk America installation?
If so, open the Control Panel>Internet Options applet and click on the "Connections" tab. Select the Talk America connection and set it as default. If you no longer require the AOL connectoid, you can delete it.

The above presupposes that AMODEM is used for the Talk America connection. If it uses a router, set it to "Never Dial A Connection".qz:

Both ADSL and dial-up connect to the Internet through the RJ-45 (phone) jack. The only way you will be able to use both is if you have the local telephone company install ANOTHER line to your home so you will have two phone jacks--one for the ADSL modem and one for the dial-up modem.

You may have both the Talk America ADSL and the AOL dial-up connections in My Network Places.

Best regards,
Doc Quote

In what part of the UK do you reside, Backdated?

Hi - Been a while since I used AOL (thankfully) but, if I recall there a selection right when the app first COMES up for SELECTING the connection. Simply delete the dial up connection and add a new connection and, when given the choice, select the new DSL connection. Or am I over simplfying?
Second item - pcdoc4christ mentioned a RJ45 phone connection. RJ45 refers to the size of the plug and the number of wires contained therein. RJ45 is the plug type used from most DSL modems to connect to your PCs NIC card and contains 8 wires (also other phone uses - but no need to go there for this discussion). A standard phone line, which only has two wires uses a RJ11 plug and will carry one phone line. A RJ14 plug is identical in shape and size to RJ11, but contains 4 wires for two line operation. That being said, it should not be a problem to bring both DSL AND the telephone line to your PC off of ONE phone line. All that is needed is the correct placement of the DSL filters. The DSL connection from phone line to modem gets connected directly onto the line coming into the building before any filter. The telephones (or dial up modem) must be after the filter(s). All phones and dial up modems can be hooked up with one filter, it just depends on how tricky you can be in getting the wiring around your place, see diagram below.
/meIncidentally, you CAN use the ADSL and a dial up connection simultaneously. You just won't get to talk on the phone while doing so.Quote

Solve : Talk America DSL?

Answer»

I would like to thank "backdated","pcdoc4christ","phonegut1" and
"2k_dummy for all the help. I took your advice and did as you all
requested. After spending 2 more hours with AOL teck"thats 4 hours total
AOL told me the problem was with Talk America. I contacted Talk America
"for the second time" and as soon as I told the teck what the problem was
he told me that Talk America and AOL will not configure period. So all the
crap I went through the LAST three days was for nothing. The Talk America
teck was supprized I wasn't told this the first time I called.

I just wanted to pass along the information so no body else will have to
go through the same as I did. Even though my wife want's her AOL. I
told her "IT'S OUT OF HERE".

Thanks Again to all

So we messed around with our pc ourselves and then got our modem THINGY to work, all we did was install some sound card drivers. How the *censored* boradband is effected by sound card drivers i will NEVER know ( unless SOMEONE wants to tell me )

I made sure everything is on automatic and stuff, i repaired alot of time, turned off the modem, ran adaware all those things, there WERE some viruses not coming off but im not sure if theyre causing the problem, i tried using the laptop with the modem and it works, thank God or else i wouldnt be able to look for a solution to this horrible problem, please guys any help would be appreciated, i have a class ASSIGNMENT and im really in love with this gurl and all i have is her email address, im gittin serious butterflies and i really want to talk to her online, PLZ HELP!Need more info.

OS
ISP
i have a windows xp pro ver. 2002 sp2
isp vipowernet.netJust to see, do this:

1) Go into Command Prompt. You can get there by GOING Start > Run > and type CMD and press OK.
2) In command Prompt, type ipconfig /all and press enter.
3) copy and past here what it says.also, do you use a Router or do you connect directly to the modem?i connetc directly to my modemi cant cpoy n paste cuz i have to put the ethernet switch n and out the desktop and laptop to see every little thingOk... try this, dunno if it will solve your problem, but it's another thing that can be taken off the list.

1) Connect the computer to your modem.
2) Go back into Command Prompt
3) Type ipconfig /release
4) Wait for it to run. If it works correctly, it should say something with your IP address set to 0.0.0.0 as well as another address set to 0.0.0.0
5) Then, type ipconfig /renew
6) Wait for it to run. If it works correctly, it should show you something similar to when you use the ipconfig /all command earlier.
7) Exit command prompt and see if you can get to the internet.

Now, you have 2 computers and only a single modem. Have you always switched back and forth between your computers on the modem?

Solve : Replacement battery won't work?

Answer»

I have a Compaq Presario 1277 Laptop and purchased a replacement battery from E-bay. I can't get it to work in my computer, and contacted the seller. He INSISTS it should work. The existing part # 116314-001 says to replace only with 138184-001. This is what I thot I bid on, but got a 347737-001. This is a separate issue that I have taken up with the seller, but my question is: the voltage of my existing battery is 14.8 V, and the battery that I recieved is only 9.6 v. Should that make a difference? The battery housing for each is identical, and I checked several other e-tailers that carry replacement batteries and the 347737-001 was listed as a replacement for my computer. Thanks. Two words..... Caveat Emptor!LOL I was GOING to say that I NEVER trust eBay. "Caveat emptor": Let the buyer beware. Quote

He insists it should work.
But it doesn't. Quite simple really. I would politely send it back with a request for a REFUND or replacement.

Solve : Network computers?

Answer»

Can anyone explain to me how to network computers. I have six computers in one building with a
DSL hardwired service. It depends on whether it's a business, which country and what you expect of the network.
Setting this up will PROBABLY be fairly easy (He says, knowing that even the simplest network can be a right pig). Administering it is another matter. What's at the end of the DSL? A router? If not, that's your simplest solution. Router with built in DSL modem. Preferably with at least 6 ethernet ports, be they wired (preferably but involves more drilling!) or wireless (go for 801.11g). Then you need corresponding ethernet cards in all the PCs. Set up is relatively simple if your router has a built in DHCP server.

If the router doesn't have a firewall built in and if you don't know how to set up a firewall, then get an expert to help. It is well worth paying for this.all computers have ethernet cards. Router has a built in DSL modem with a firewall. not sure what a DHCP server? Now with all that being said, were do i go from here?I WOULD imagine that the router does have DHCP. That's the protocol that assigns IP ADDRESSES to the computers on your LAN (so long as it's turned on in the router). DHCP makes everything fairly easy. In most cases you'd just need to hook up the PCs to the router, turn on the PCs and you're away. Have you tried that?As long as different machines aren't continually joining/leaving the network, I would personally disable DHCP and set up static IPs.
Whether or not each machine can share an internet connection or whether wanside IPs are available is dependent on the ISP INVOLVED.

There aren't that many 6 port routers around that I know of so extra switches etc may be required. Are any extras involved like network PRINTERS for example?

It's the existing and projected software setup will perhaps require the most thought.

I got a the full version of their firewall with AOL for free and i used their firewall and it blocked nothing, i had laods of trojans within a week when i did a scan, and yes befre you all ask it was set up right.. I just use WINDOWS firewall now with my router and i got nothing so far, yey!Yeah. When I first had McAfee Firewall on my OLD computer, I got tired of it not doing anything so I removed it, and afetr that I couldn't get on the internet, and nobody could fix it, so I had to reformat lol

FlameThat's one big oops! I wonder if and when the writs will start flying.

Chris, what benefits do you think you're getting by running the XP firewall with a hardware firewall?Something called extra SECURITY

They dont CONFLICT with eachother so why not?The Windows firewall does nothing that your hardware firewall doesn't already do so in effect, there is no extra security.
I would advise using Kerio, Sygate or another well thought of application and DUMPING the Windows ICS/Firewall service. Search these forums for best version info regarding the two I've named.

Solve : Faster FireFox?

This only works with broadband users, i think:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
(DOUBLE click to do that)

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"
(Double click to do that)

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 16. This means it will make 16 requests at once.
(Double click and change the VALUE in the form)

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and SELECT New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

Found all this on a Condition ZERO clan website im a member of. Hope it works for you, did for me.

Solve : Cell Phone Charging?

Answer»

Hey guys, I heard this from someone but I'm not sure if its true or not... Whenever it is possible for me to have my cell phone plugged-in, it's in. Someone told me that if you never let the battery get used that much (not being plugged-in) and you leave it charging for every use that it meses with the battery meter, and it is not accurate... Has anyone heard of this?

FlameDid these people say *how* it messes with the meter? It doesn't seem likely. They didn't. I don't think it's true, but I figured someone here might know better than I lol

FlameWhat kind of battery do you have, Li-Polymer, or Li-Ion? Re Li-Ion, check out >this article< that I wrote on the subject which applies equally to laptop batteries. Li-Polymer batteries should be cared for in the same way that I outline in that article, ALTHOUGH the technology is a little different.

One THING that complicates the issue is the use of "smart batteries". These are the ones with a built in "battery meter" (I think it unlikely that a mobile phone battery is smart). Smart batteries require the periodic use of a dedicated program that fully discharges and recharges them to overcome some errors that CREEP in over time.Flame these days with newer models of phone it doesnt matter, thats why you get in car hands fee kits now alot more becasue the batteries can cope with it. I think it was with the old nikel ones that it did mess with the batteries and screw up the life of it.The battery is a Lithium Ion 3.7v ...

Flameyou dont need to worry man i think something like that is what messed up the early IPOD batteries but with with the technology now you dont need to worry.

R0SSI was just wondering if it was true. I've noticed that my battery meter seems to show low battery life rather quickly sometimes, but it's not a problem.

FlameYea exactly what ROSS said, it used to be a problem but nothing to worry about thses days, however try not to overchagre it. By this i mean leaving it on charge for a long period of time, like over night. Batteries do have overcharge protection but it has be known to fail, as my friend found out the hard way That's my concern. Every moment (while at home) that I am able to have my phone plugged in, it's in lol

FlameFlame, do download and read my article.hhhmm... INTERESTING... That brings up another issue... If you talk on that phone for about 10 minutes, plugged in or not, it get quite hot! Not so much in the back, but the front where you put your face!

FlameCould that be body heat?Oh no Even if you don't touch it to your face or anything. If I use the headset for instance, it still burns up...

FlameMine starts to burn if I talk for longer than 30 minutes or so, which happens QUIET often. The battery also goes down WAY faster when you are talking to someone.

Solve : arrrg!!!?

Answer»

Warning! to save wasting your time reading this, this post is not a computer problem i need to resolve.
more just like a complaint with a couple of questions, read on if your bored

Theres a little argument on anouther forum
and my question is
Are CPU's ment to run flat out 24/7?

http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=4229&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15

Basicaly all the site admins and mod's say 'yeah it's fine, just download our program... if you have any problems just buy upgrades'

Which i don't think is right, they should not advertise without warning.
The warning that is given is "use at own risk, we will not be liable to any damage", but i only came across message after actualy looking for it. at the bottom of a web page, easy to miss...
Quote

Most desktop PCs able to run Windows 2000 or XP will have enough computing power to join the experiment. Naturally, a more modern or high-spec computer will produce results more rapidly.
that's is a quote from the download's page requirments.
This is wrong!
What they should have said in that quote is what is said in the forum posted above!!
the download was even mentioned on TV! i even advertised them on these forums!!! which i wish i never now...

To be honest i don't know how damaging running at 100% is, but my fan was spinning fast every 1 min (literaly)
This can't be healthy for my computer can it?
This would happen when i'm idle, and even when i'm not idle (they claim that the program will cut down on CPU use when your computer is doing other tasks, even this did not seem to work for me,CPU always at 100%)
and i'm surposed to leave this running 24/7?!

I don't know why you guys would bother reading all that...
I'm not posting this on there forum becuase there responce would be too biased
That's not the only post either... Theres lots more complaints, all made by new people with only a couple of posts. they make a complaint and then the mod's jump in and make it sound like everythng is ok.
and each time i bet you the guy that complains just deletes the program and leaves, but theres always just more annoyed people JOINING the forum to complain, when will these admins finaly decide to make the negatives more clearer?!?

I don't know what computerhelp.com can do to solve this, i'm jus a little annoyed is all :-/... and i have the right to be (right?)Most distributed computing programs do keep your CPU running at 100% because they are designed to use any and all UNUSED cycles. They give up CPU usage when another app calls for them. If a machine has proper cooling, it can INDEED run 24/7 @100% without problems. Cooling is the key. Most "cracker box" PC's do not have adequate cooling for these projects. There are work arounds such as temp monitoring software and CPU cooler software. CPU cooler software works by automatically making the CPU idle cycles very high when a given temp is reached and then giving the cycles back to the app when it drops to a given temp. Also note that some Intel processors can automatically reduce the speed, which helps with cooling. They can also shut themselves down before critical temp is reached. The only real danger to running these projects 24/7 is letting the heat get out of hand.Ok thanks for letting me know, but it's just the fact that i could have seriously damaged my system if i did not look into it.

But then i guess it's fact that being careless can cause damage
Can't really blame them for it... still i am annoyed that there was no warning about this

I play games like Battlefield2 on minimun requirements, and the fan hardly ever STARTS spinning like mad like it does with this program.
*censored* them... i left it running over night too, i don't even know if damage has already been done.

Without buying better cooling for my "cracker box"( ) anyone know any freeware to recomend?
Monitoring software would be good. The CPU cooler software i'm not too sure about, becuased i used this rather complicated ONE called ThreadMaster before, that slowed performance too much (but i guess thats the point of them?).

I know this does not give you alot to go on...but seeing as how I am so not knowledgeable about computer SYSTEMS (hardware or software) I'd appreciate any SUGGESTIONS. I'm RUNNING out of Windows 98. I do know that. HELP!!!

P.S. Just to give you kind of idea of what I'm talking about I attached an example.Try increasing your screen resolution.
Right click on your desktop->Properties>SETTINGS.Can't you change the size directly from the monitor?

H-size
V-sizeRight click the desktop and from the context menu, SELECT Properties>Settings. What screen resolution/colour depth combination is set? They should be at least 800x600/16bit respectively.
If you can't achieve at least those parameters, click on the "advanced" button and select the "Adapter" tab. What hardware is listed there? If it's a "VGA Adapter" or similar, you need to reinstall your graphics card drivers.

Solve : Is 800 by 600 pixels bad for Low Vision Users??

Answer»

A large minority of people my age have reported visual impairment.
A few years back a screen resolution of 800 wide by 600 high was good for most users. Now Windows will nag you if you want to use this lower resolution. Often the SYSTEM wants you to go up to 1600 by 1200. That is TWICE the size of the old standard. (And four times the pixels.)
Why? Why does the Windows OS need so much screen space? The ease of Use options in current versions of windows do not recommend the older standard. Has the OS somehow now given us more information than it used to? I doubt it. Back in the DAYS of Windows 3.11 the 800 x 600was good enough. Everything you needed was there. Now I can understand the need for more RAM. But why four times the number of pixels?

Here are some statistics about Low Vision.

the lower resolution. For me, Windows s7 with 800 by 600 and large icons works good. But I get this stupid reminder that my resolution is too low about once a week.

So, my question is - Does Microsoft really care about users with visual impairments? Do they ever consult with people who have such impairment?

Any comments welcome.

The reason for more pixels is for sharper, clearer text and on-screen elements. The issue here is associating Screen resolution with the size of on-screen elements, which isn't really the case.

Imagine a massive, 2048 by 1500 pixel display. You are likely imagining a Windows desktop with tiny, 32x32 icons on the desktop, and teensy little taskbar buttons, and so forth. Of course, it could be configured that way, but it doesn't have to be (nor by default).

I popped open a Windows 8.1 VM, and I was able to create this. The on-screen elements like icons, and even the Run Dialog, are quite large. This is because I adjusted the settings on the VM; I set the DPI to the largest setting, and I adjusted the personalization options to use Larger text as well (For the Start Screen).

Now, for contrast, we can see this 800x600 Windows 3.1 image, blown up to fit the same size.

It's also notable that even with less visual acuity, using scaled DPI text rather than blown-up aliased low-resolution text tends to be easier to read, in the same way that typeset text would be easier to read than blown-up MS-DOS Text fonts.

Solve : I have this Android Tablet (Aluratek) and the site offers no firmware, any help??

Answer»

It always better to install untouched firmware (roms) than doing a system restore from android settings, and usually websites offers firmwares in case something happens, or famous brands are easy to FIND with google and the community.

But this one I have searched for many years and never found any trace of, "Aluratek CINEPAD AT197F 9.7 inch" i was wondering if by looking at the system properties and the kernel or build or other, i could find a very exact firmware, that would be a complete match for this actual tablet.

Or

Could I extract the rom FROM the tablet using a tool like Odin or other, via my pc.

Because before i install some UNOFFICIAL firmware i would like to have a copy of the original, firmware + recovery + bootloader. I ALREADY LOST a LePan II tablet by installing the wrong rom and now its completely dead and used as a coaster.

Solve : Is is normal for a cracked smarphone screen to not respond to any touch attempt??

Answer»

I'm asking because I found this Nokia Lumia 520 windows phone, the screen is completely smashed and trying to slide, touch an app or button anywhere does not do anything.

But i took it apart and the screen (under the cracked touch screen), looks fine, displays fine when device is powered on, so here is my question:

If i buy a replacement touchscreen from ebay, for about 7$, do you think the touch function would be resolved?

In other words, does the cracks on the touch screen make it completely unresponsive until a crack free screen is installed, or, is very likely that i would not work because the problem is deeper than on the surface.

For seven bucks it's not MUCH of a gamble...True, but the main question is, does a crack (in this case very serious) make the complete surface completely dead, like in the upper right of the screen.Yes it will, there is a very thin set of conductors FLOWING through the screen that are used to detect touch, a crack will totally wreck this rendering it useless. I cracked the digitiser on my laptop's screen and before I replaced it I had to physically disconnect it from the motherboard as it was causing the mouse cursor to jump around the screen wildly. It's still worth 7 Bucks to find out IMHO...I agree that $7 is worth the gamble... just be really careful with replacing digitizer. The glass can cut you up good or get glass splinters. I replaced a digitizer on a kindle fire and I have to say it was a royal pita. Took me about an hour to replace working very slowly to not damage kindle fire worse than it was and also not get glass shards EMBEDDED into me. You will need a heat gun to get the gum adhesive to soften for the digitizer to separate and if you get the device too hot you can kill it. You will need a pry kit or at minimum a guitar pick to use to break the bond between the gum adhesive that holds the digitizer to the body of the case. After you get digitizer off you will needs to remove all of the gum snot balls from the body of the device and prep it for the new digitizer to stick where the old one was. Best of luck if you take on this project, and be careful and slow. Here are some pics of the digitizer I had to replace. I went to youtube that showed the procedure too before digging into it to be as safe as I could to not ruin the kindle fire that was $150 back in the day, and the digitizer replacement was $30 on amazon to fix it + a $7 pry kit from newegg which came with pry tools and guitar pick etc.

thanks i bought the part and it also came with MANY tiny tools very useful to repair small devices so the price was a sure deal, i'll cross my fingers.I'll just add that different screens react differently to cracks, I don't know enough about the different technologies involved to be able to give a very detailed answer but I can say that every single Lumia 520 I've seen with a cracked screen, the touchscreen has been completely unresponsive. Where I used to work, we deployed Windows phones to about 200 people so believe me, I SAW quite a few cracked screens heh - if I remember right, the 720's touchscreen still sometimes worked depending where the crack was, but the 520's were always completely nonfunctional.

Solve : Interesting info about AMD FX-8350 - single threaded core performance?

Answer»

I have been running programs that are single threaded that I expected to run better on the AMD FX-8350 4000Mhz than they have been running. I was starting to think I had a lag issue with hardware. But then I read this and it shows why its lagging. While the FX-8350 is ok for programs that are multi threaded, its lagging in single threaded performance. I didnt buy the FX-8350 for single threaded computing, but have been WORKING on a project and its the most powerful system available to crunch and so I have been using it and I have been running 8 copies of the same program I wrote each core working on 12.5% of the total work load so I can put all cores to USE vs pegging 1 of 8 cores and wasting processing time. I expected some work to complete faster than it has and thats when I started google searching and found this...

Quote

In terms of raw single-core performance the flagship AMD FX-8350 is lagging behind intel's processor line-up by over two GENERATIONS. The PassMark Single Thread scores for the i5-2500K vs the FX-8350 are 1863 to 1520 which shows that in terms of raw per-core processing the FX-8350 is lagging the two year old i5 by 23%. Where the AMD FX makes up is on multi-core performance, with a score of 9156 vs 6745, the AMD leads the Intel 2500K by 36% making it the far more CAPABLE multi-threaded server orientated performer. The AMD is also cheaper but significantly more power hungry which counts strongly against it as a sever proposition. The FX-8350 could be a GOOD fit for specific server use cases but for general consumer use, which is single and dual core intensive, Intel's two year old i5-2500K delivers better performance.

Solve : Can somebody tell me if I am downloading YouTube videos right??

Answer»

I am downloading YouTube videos via tubenet and the video opens via the real times app. The problem is that I don't know if there being saved.

To clear up space, I remove any misc.folders. Am I mistakenly deleting the videos that I downloaded? I am checking things off and removing them. Could it be am removing what I saved, or think I saved?I think removing files is not a GOOD idea. Unless you know some FILE is not needed and the file is rather large. Even a large video is small compared to the size of your hard drive. Unless you are a real PACK rat.

Did you already see this?

How to Download YouTube Videos.

I think I FIGURED out how to do it. I think as long as I don't DELETE any files pertaining to real player, video and tubenet, I think I am OK. Also, I upload all the videos on Real Times, so I think Real Times would have the videos on file.

Solve : USB patch chords?

Answer»

Something else to WATCH out for when using USB patch cords here. What I find interesting is that at least with USB 1.1 and 2.0 if you overload the USB Bus it will protect itself and cut out WITHOUT cooking anything and give you a warning that the USB Bus is overloaded. I have seen this before on SYSTEMS way back with too many USB devices drawing.

I can only imagine a laptop burning up if you back feed power into the USB port of the laptop such as if you somehow plug a wall adapter meant for an iPhone to the USB port of a laptop and the two 5 volt sources fight it out.

Additionally I have had USB devices fray and all 4 wires cross and no fire or damage to computer, just the USB BUS overload message.

First I heard of this USB-C ... looked it up https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_Type-CUSB Type C is neat - My phone has it.

The article's accuracy is a bit suspicious - None of the stuff it discusses is specific to type C - Drawing too much current is the same as it does with older USB generations - Devices should regulate how much they are drawing and the device that is providing the power should detect over current on the USB port. What it only very BRIEFLY mentions that this "destroying laptops" occurred to a Google Engineer who tests cheap USB type C cables. The particular cable in question was in fact incorrectly wired so the full voltage was provided to the data pins of the laptop - This is nothing specific to USB type C - I doubt a regular USB device would particularly like having 5v applied across the data pins! The issue is probably just more common with cheap type C cables because they are a new thing and therefore the factories that mass produce the cheap cables haven't YET perfected the process.
