Attackers are bigger, bolder, and faster
Volume 20 of SYMANTEC’s Internet Security Threat Report (ISTR) reveals that cyberattackers are infiltrating networks by hijacking company's infrastructures, while also extorting end-users through their smartphones and social media.

Some very innovative tricks are being used by the virus makers.
In 2014, we saw attackers trick companies into infecting themselves by Trojanizing software updates to common programs and patiently waiting for their targets to download them. Once a victim had downloaded the software update, attackers were given unfettered ACCESS to the corporate network. Highly-targeted spear-phishing attacks remained a favorite tactic for infiltrating networks, as the total number of attacks rose eight percent. What makes last year particularly interesting is the precision of these attacks. Spear-phishing attacks used 20 percent fewer emails to successfully reach their targets and incorporated more drive-by malware DOWNLOADS and other web-based exploits.

Record the process of opening all tabs at this other computer. Then save that macro and place it in a location on the hard drive to then be ready to run. You can then get it to run by 2 methods. First method is to from command line from your system target that remote system for the macro to run on. Other method is to have a program running as a service at the remote system that is looking for a trigger action. Such as if a file exists or not at C:\Macro123\ such as start.txt. Then the program tests once every MINUTE or 5 minutes or so on for this file to exist. If the file exists then it starts the macro and opens all tabs. The file can be passed from your system to the remote computer through a folder share at the remote system in which just sending a blank text file can be the trigger. You can then have it run the macro and then at the end of the process it removes this start.txt file from C:\Macro123\ and this way if the computer gets rebooted at the other end, it doesnt boot with a true macro EXECUTE CONDITION and its fresh ready to roll.

However, it would be eliminate all confusion by both newbies and long-time members as to where to post forum-related issues if such a dedicated children board was created i.e., more user friendly.

In other words, using the Other --> Other children board - IMO - is not self-evident as to being the proper location for posting said issues.

I have never used any of these. Years ago I did Google voice, but stopped using it.

I just would like to have a good way I can talk to people without using my phone. Video is not important. Bit it might be good.

When it comes to voice chat stuff the main concern is getting everybody to agree to use one. I use Skype for my Work because, even though everybody hates it it's the one that everybody happens to have an account with and it hasn't gotten bad enough that there has been a significant push to say "Alright, everybody we are using IRC/Discord/Slack/etc. from now on.".

Skype works well for me. I use it when on the road to chat back home for free. Only issue is if bandwidth is not so good you then might as well shut off the video feature and just chat through it and not choke off the trickle of bandwidth. If your connected and your bandwidth is erratic or choked down pretty badly skype will let you know, as well as they have frequent surveys asking how your connection was and all to try to better manage it I guess.

Prior to skype I used Ventrillo for voice chat in which I had a computer back home that was a Ventrillo server... this was 6 years ago before switching to skype, but I could have 4 other people connected at same time under the 5-person free use home private ventrillo server license.

I also had a WHS RUNNING back 6 years ago in which due to poor bandwidth at hotels and wanting to send video messages and them being too large for e-mail attachment, I would record videos and then upload them to my WHS while on the road and my family would post their video messages to me through the WHS and it worked very well. Some videos that are say 200MB in size I just would logon to my WHS and then SET to download and then go to dinner and come back and it would download it through the 256k/64k poor hotel satellite connection and im I was lucky it would be ready to watch when I got done with dinner.

I will give Skype a try. I've used Skype, although not in recent months for reasons not related to Skype. My experience with it was positive.

Facebook might also be considered an alternative to Skype. Facebook has a video call feature.

Every TIME I TRY to open a video on BBC news (I use Windows 8.1 and Firefox) I get a warning that the Adobe Flash Player has crashed and that therefore the video cannot be played.

Is there an easy solution to this, please?

I have UNINSTALLED and re-installed my flash player, so why is it not working?

This site showed up in a Google search for a TV episode I wanted to see.
Short version - I never GOT to see the free TV show episode. Or anything.
The keep throwing up a pop up asking be to upgrade to paid membership. You would thin they wouldst least given me a free sample FIRST. But it never worked. Then trying to CANCEL by 'free' membership was near impossible. Th 800 number they give is no longer in use.
They seem to be just inside the LIMIT of the law.
My recommendation - stay AWAY!

hi guys,

i have an old computer i use as back up, and mistakenly installed a PIRATE copy of windows 7 which is horrible, i want to GO back to win XP,, but it wont let me format and REINSTALL, saying saying the windows system is older then the one i am trying to install !!!

So my question is how do i format my computer, clean so i can reinstall windows XP, ??Boot from Windows XP CD and when your given installation location choices delete all prior partitions which may show as unknown. Then create a new partition for XP and then TELL windows XP to install to this partition. You will want to backup any DATA first as for the hard drive will be wiped clean.

Is thee somewhere a list of Hot Sport devices?? Like Smart Phones or Tablets. I don't want a $300 device, just something very low cost that can deliver a 3 or 4 G data connection with a local hot SPOT wireless.

Let me explain. For some odd reason, AT&T and Comcast no longer over Intent is this part of town. (Maybe they don't like my credit report.) So the alternative is to go with a 3G or 4G data thing.

I have a little Smart Phone from TAG mobile that should have a hot spot, but it does not work. TAG told me that it will not work on that phone.
SO, I am thinking of getting another phone that has a real hot spot. But the phones I see do not always indicate that can hot spot.

That sis why I would like a list of the low cost phones that have that feature.



You can certainly get them, they are often known as MiFi devices - Small devices that take a SIM card and broadcast a wireless network. If you are after a more permanent solution rather than something designed to be portable, you find routers that have 3g/4g functionality - These either have built in modems or have a USB port to allow you to connect a 3g/4g dongle.

Alternatively if you want it to be able to be used as a phone as well, almost all current android phones will support hotspot functionality - THINGS such as the Moto G are really good value.

The key thing here however is to CHECK with your mobile network that the devices will work and that they will allow you to tether off of it - Some phone providers do not let you tether unless you pay extra and can actively detect/block it.

If you smartphone has a data plan and is a recent Android model, yum can MAKE a "Hot Spot" to get another DEVICE into the Internet.

My own personal experience has been little. In fact, this is the first day I got it to work for me. The app offers a trail until you research a data limit. Either you buy it or reset the connection.
But a free app did not work and asked me to install more stuff. That was not for me.

So I need your help. Which of these apps is best for a stingy computer user the wants the best for free. On a current Android phone you shouldn't need to use a third party app - There should be an OPTION for something along the lines of "Tethering and Portable Hotspot" in the device settings.I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan from Verizon so the Hotspot feature on my phone is disabled. I use a 3rd party app called FoxFi to turn on my phone's hotspot.

I had got this unit, for a few dollars a while back ago, cause, it didn't fully work. When you turned it on it GIVES sort of a high pitched hum. We were kind of ABLE too TROUBLE shoot that the board that provided power kind of WENT bad.

For awhile now, I've been trying to learn computer programming, and it just isn't working. Concepts such as multitheading, and security are giving me a hard time to really understand.

I do however like database, and good with SQL queries and database modelling. My question is, if I were to switch my focus to SQL and Database admin type of work, do I have to worry about security, i.e SQL injection, hashing a table, etc... or is that at the programmer level? i.e the programmer has to worry about how to access the database, correct? Using parameterized queries, all my job is, is to create the database using whatever software my job requires, Oracle, SQL Server, etc...Its the responsibility of all to protect security.

The database admin would set the data types as WELL as would have to stay on top of keeping the database ( MySQL in my case ) patched as up to date as possible without hopefully breaking legacy support. Constantly keeping an eye out for exploits and patching when they are discovered and patch available. They also would limit the access to the database to only those who need access to it so its not wide open to all.

The programmer is involved in setting limits in how the connection is established, and limits set on information passed to avoid an overflow condition.

*I'm speaking from my EXPERIENCE as a Systems Admin in which I had to do all 3 roles + everything else. Fortunately the database was accessible in house only and was not on the WWW for hackers to hit. For people needing to access it remotely we had them connecting through Remote Desktop sessions initially, and then upgraded to Citrix which allowed the database transactions to remain in house and only keystrokes and mouse activity and video images to be passed across so there was no direct injection methods from the end users or WWW.

I would have been very nervous having my database server on the DMZ. So I went this route above instead to have the protection of the security of RDP or Citrix as a line of defense to avoid hackers gaining direct access to the database through an online web interface. Many thanks for your answer, one question though, when it comes to SQL injection, it would be up to the DBA to ensure that it doesn't happen, or is that programmer level? Both ....

Some patches fix exploits that correct for injection attacks. So you as a DBA would likely patch say version 5.6 to 5.7 upgrading the software thats handling your database such as MySQL software update etc. *It gets tricky when you have legacy calls to the database such as calls created under 5.0 which may not be supported under 5.7 but may have worked under 5.6. The programmer then has to work with the DBA to use a newer method vs legacy method. So a patch/upgrade can break things that are legacy.

Programmers are the first line of defense from the outside by their code testing the data to be passed to the database before the database accepts the data. If the information to be passed to the database does not comply with the rule set, then their code would specify that there was a problem and the information not passed to the database.

Keep your secrets secret: Assume that your application is not secure and act accordingly by encrypting or hashing passwords and other confidential data including connection strings.
Don't divulge more information than you need to: hackers can learn a great deal about database architecture from error messages, so ensure that they display minimal information. Use the "RemoteOnly" customErrors mode (or equivalent) to display verbose error messages on the local machine while ensuring that an external hacker gets nothing more than the fact that his actions resulted in an unhandled error.
Don't forget the basics: Change the passwords of application accounts into the database regularly. This is common sense, but in practice these passwords often stay unchanged for months or even years.
Buy better software: Make code writers responsible for checking the code and for fixing security flaws in custom applications before the software is delivered. SANS suggests you incorporate terms from this sample contract into your agreement with any software vendor.

I have IIS 6.0 installed by DEFAULT. I tried too update, it too a NEWER IIS too configure, the Server. It's not letting me update too IIS 7, says that it isn't need and should run the installed VERSION through Mangement

I just want to know if it will be good decession to get 1 desktop support guy to help me ? currently i am alone doing all this.Thats a lot for just 1 person. You must know what you have for call frequency for support calls and projects to know what your IT staffing needs should be unless this is a brand new business and no track record of support history.

If your looking for better user support and lesser stress on yourself I would almost suggest 3 people and this way when one person is out sick or vacation you still have 2 people there.I agree that sounds like a lot for one person to manage, but it does depend on the type of business and its needs. At my previous company which was in the CONSTRUCTION industry we had approx 300 users and an IT staff of 6 at most - 1 manager, 2 sysadmins, 3 desktop support. This declined to 1 manager and 3 desktop support, and now (since I left) has one non-technical supervisor and 2 desktop support. We managed around 15 servers - domain CONTROLLERS, file and print, some remote-app, some application servers, and an SCCM environment - plus approx 150 smartphones, some tablet devices, lots of featurephones, desktops/laptops, and site comms (approx 20-30 sites plus 4 offices, 4G/VPN/fixed line comms). We (IT) varied from swamped to bored out of our minds depending what was going on, but I certainly felt busy most of the time especially as I dealt with most of our suppliers as well.

My current workplace has a similar number of users, fewer phone users and fewer offices, but many, many more servers and it's a much more technical environment, so I now work within a team of around 30 IT staff working shifts to provide cover for 14 hours per day plus out of hours support. A lot of the day-to-day things like ordering, supplier negotiations etc are dealt with by another team, as are most aspects of new projects and infrastructure like cabling and power. A very different enviornment, but are we less busy? No, we're busy in different ways.

I imagine if you asked 10 different IT guys, they'd be working in 10 different environments and give you 10 different figures for IT staff numbers, but my gut feeling is that you could do with another member of staff for sure, even just to take on the more menial tasks to give you time to train them up and write documentation to improve their skillset to assist you further.

Sorry for the rather rambling post, I just wanted to give some context and background as it's IMPORTANT to understand that every company is different so it's difficult to give a straightforward yes/no answer to your question. I hope it's of some help, though.

This would be a news item if it were really news. Breaking news is like when a huge wave comes in and hits the shore and gets your attention. But sometimes things take place slowly and gradually like the high tide MOVING in and it are not considered breaking news. It is just a slow evolutionary process that takes time.

I'm talking about the product named “Dragon naturally speaking. “ This product has been around for years and keeps getting better and better. Unfortunately the marketing efforts of the company were mediocre. For such a GREAT product it was under advertised and overpriced.

But this review is not about the product itself. This review is about a review. Just a couple of days ago somebody in Yahoo Tech did a piece about the new Dragon naturally speaking anywhere application for Android and Apple. Android DEVICES up to now have not had much speech recognition other than Google talk.

Let me make it clear. The Apple product and the Google product are nothing likely Dragon Naturally Speaking product. I've use the Dragon for years and am very impressed about its sped and see and ease-of-use. But it does take a little bit of practice. You can't yell and you can't rush. Even so you can dictate faster than what most people can type. Typically I get about 90 words per minute using the Dragon.

The new product announced this week allows you to have the full features of Dragon on your mobile device or tablet. This means you could dictate a LETTER or even do a chapter for your new book. The accuracy rate now is much higher than ever and it gets beyond 99%. Yes. you have to practice.

As I said, this is not really a news item. Rather it is a review of review. The link below gives you the link that I found on Yahoo. At first it sounds like it's a press release from the company, but it is not. It is an honest and accurate review of what the Dragon can do for you. And I agree with everything he says. Including the part about the price. It is far far overpriced for the current market. They want you to buy it on a subscription. Who wants to subscribe to an application? Especially when similar applications are free, although not near as good.

If the company could just get over the marketing and pricing issues, the Dragon would rapidly overtake the mobile market and become the de facto standard for entering text into any mobile application. Unfortunately with their current pricing policy it's not likely to happen.

My hotmail is set to exclusive yet I still get loads of junk email, I block them and set up subject rules to block them.

Is there a way to get rid of them as its really annoying.

I also changed my password twice in the last couple weeks.Contact Hotmail...i didn't even think it was still around.Changing your password should be a first step if you suspect someone KNOWS your password. But, that does not appear to be your issues. If so, then changing your password won't help.

Using message rules might not be very effective since spammers frequently change the address from which they send messages.

I suggest vigilantly using the unsubscribe procedure. Other folks may disagree with and say that clicking the unsubscribe link will merely result in more spam because it confirms that you have seen the sender's message to you. But, I have found that using the unsubscribe procedure helps. Once you get the volume of junk mail down, you will probably have to continue unsubscribing to unwanted mail, perhaps a few times on several days during the week. But, that, in my view, is better than living with a large volume of unwanted mail. Again, this my opinion and I won't be surprised if you receive differing views from other members.

There has got to be a better way to back up computer files. I have an external hard drive that I back up all my files to. For a while I would just back up files one at a time - the files that were new or updated. But sometimes you forget what files need backed up. And over time my files and folders on my computer were different from what I had on my external hard drive.

Then I thought maybe I should just put all folders in my My Documents folder and back up all of those files (that folder) all at once. Some files are larger like ebooks and audio files - I thought I could just save those in a different folder on my external hard drive and remove them from my computer all-together. That way they're not slowing down my computer.

But the folders in my My Documents folder on my hard drive have way way more files in them then what I got on my computer. And my computer is already got way to many files that's probably contributing to my slow computer problem so I don't want to add more files to it. So I can't put all the files from the My Documents folder (from the external hard drive) into the My Documents folder on my computer - it's too many.

Is there any easier way to back up your files? This is always such a pain. I'm starting to think it would be better just to get a new back up drive every few years and just keep the files I'm currently using on my computer and back those up to the new back up drive and leave everything else on the old external hard drive.

How do you guys do it? And what's the best HARDWARE for backing up all your computer files? What do they use these days - still an external hard drive or do they have zip drives that will hold as much data?
Sounds like you need some backup software that will allow you to specify which files to backup (All, new, etc...). You'd also be able to schedule unattended backups.

I'm not sure how to create a disk IMAGE, but I wonder if that would put everything in one file making it difficult to see the individual files that it contains. Disc imaging allows you to see any view you like - entire disc, individual folders, or files. Disc Imaging is the best backup method available, allowing you to restore individual files or entire discs if and when needed. Here's something I put together a while ago:


Disk Imaging software takes a "snapshot" of your drive as it exists at the time you create the image. You can then restore the entire image or any file(s) or folder(s) you choose. It is a virtually foolproof way of backing up your system and providing a safe haven in the event of a catastrophe that requires you to blow away your system partition and restore it to a previous state. It also allows you to "test" various software and be confident that you have a the ability to RETURN to the prior state any time you choose. I use Acronis True Image. It is the best of breed, but it isn't free. The best free alternative is Macrium Reflect.

1) I create an image of my system partition once a week to a second hard drive and keep the 2 or 3 most recent images. I also image my other partitions about once a month. I always enable "verify image" in the options. It takes a little longer, but insures a valid image (the last thing you want is to try to restore an image only to find it is corrupt - it happens).

2) I also create an image before performing any drive level function (ie, changing the size of a partition) or making any significant change to the OS such as installing a service pack or even when installing a "questionable" Windows update, etc -- also sometimes before installing new software.

3) Images may be created on any medium (external drive, usb drive, cd's or dvd's, etc). For OBVIOUS reasons they should not be stored on the same drive you are imaging. The easiest option is a second internal hd if you have one and, if you're really ambitious, to an external drive as well (one week to the internal & one week to the external or just duplicates on the external - that's actually the procedure I follow).

4) Images may be created "in the background" within the OS. If you need to restore the system partition, that will need to be done before the OS loads. You can start the process within the application in the OS and it will then tell you it needs to reboot to finish the process. Alternatively, you can boot to a "recovery disk" which you create from within the software (or to the application disk itself if you have one). This does the main thinks Macrium Reflect does in a simpler interface. The backup files can be accessed the same as a physical drive.
You can also have a full system backup as well as multiply copies of your work files.
If you use a password on the backup it then also gives some protection against cryptolocker

It is about 3-4 years old and not sure if windows 7 or 8
I recently cleaned it up and deleted unwanted programmes so we could give it to our grand daughter to use for home schooling during lock down
All went fine it was working as usual and luckily she got her school work off and printed before my problem started, HOWEVER when she went back to use it again, after turning it on she was prompted to put in a password - now here is the problem, we were only ever prompted to put in a numeric PIN number to get into it

I tried what my normal passwords i thought i may used but that doesnt work
So we tried the next step and tried the password hint, that didnt work (i have obviously forgotten what my hint even was)

So last resort I tried reset password and got the following message from the Password Reset Wizard

"If you forget the password from the user account and are unable to log on this wizard helps you reset the password
Note: To use this wizard, you must have first created a password reset disc"
( I know i have not created a password disc)


Click Next get this message
"The password key is in the following drive Data (E)"

Click Next and get the following message
"This disk is not a password reset disk"

So consequently I cannot access this computer

Can anyone help me get around this to get it functional again for my Grand Daughter

The problem I think is the May 2019 update was installed and this changed the way windows logon works as it says on the site if you can get back into windows you can change it to a local account again.

I have a Gmail account that when I set it up originally the alternate email address was a yahoo email account. However, when yahoo was having its problems with being hacked, I deleted the account, never thinking that my Gmail account was TIED to it. For whatever reason, Gmail decided that they wanted to make sure that I was me when I tried to sign on to the gmail account and told me that they would send a code to my yahoo account that no longer exists. The Gmail account is, however, my alternate email address for my AOL account. FORTUNATELY, AOL will call me on my landline with codes if they FEEL that I am not me SIGNING in. They won't set up new AOL accounts with a landline. I do not have a cell phone so Gmail can't send a text with a code. In trying to set up an AOL email account for my son, who also does not have a cell phone, they wouldn't allow me to set it up without a cellphone number that will accept text. I have a gmail account and a google account. I also have old reliable Nexus 7-13 pad and a LG mobile phone. Lately, when i try to read my emails from Thunderbird and click on the gmail account, I GET confronted by Google by asking me to VERIFY it. sometimes, unknownst to me, the password i enter is wrong, so i have to go through the verification code mode. Once that is accepted, than i am able to read my gmail in TB and etc. Now, this is on my desktop. A few days later I may use my pad or my phone and again i am being asked by Google for my password in ORDER to use my phone. I enter the same password that gets me through on my pc,but here it comes back as incorrect. So my question is why won't it accept the password that was verified on my pc and not on my phone, or pad? I encountered this problem a few days back and it happened for *censored* VPN.

I've bought my laptop a year ago, and it was running how it should, but in the last few months its performence is getting worse. I think the PROBLEM is my RAM which I only have 8GB of. But i've seen that my laptop is using 40-50% of RAM while i'm not playing ANYTHING, just on talking with my friends on discord and using razer synapse, for the keyboard. Still i think it shouldn't be that high of a memory usage.

I'm trying to install an old HDD I have for some more space on my PC, but I can't seem to get my PC to recognize the the hard drive in the file explorer. I can SEE in the BIOS that the HDD is being recognized as well as the device manager. I did trying updating the driver for the HDD and it shows it's all up to date as well.

Any help is much appreciated!Is this a drive that CONTAINS data that you are attempting to access? Generally, if the drive is seen in BIOS and device manager but not in file explorer, it MEANS the drive needs to be partitioned and formatted. However, if you partition and format the drive, any existing data will be lost.1st see if it is listed in Disk Management....PS...how is this HDD connected and what's on it ?I think you got the answer why this happening...

I have a PC running Windows 10. On my computer I have 4 internal drives: C drive which I allow programmes to default to, D which I have my backups on, E for photos and videos and J for documents/screen shots/ downloads etc

I wanted my photos to go straight to my E drive and not clutter up my C drive which was getting full.

I decided to clean up my photos and have installed Duplicate Photo Fixer. When I check the duplicates I can see that out of the thousands I have on the computer I have several HUNDRED that are in my E drive but are also on my C drive - ALTHOUGH I am not sure how this happened.

Would it be safe to just delete the ONES on my C drive as they are in my E drive? I don't want to risk losing them permanently.

Okay. so ever SINCE I put togeather my computer I have been having this recurring problem where whenever I try to play Minecraft with shaders or CS:GO on highest quality my computer completely shuts off. Even when I run UserBenchmark which is only a benchmarking test, my computer still shuts off. I am not overclocking my CPU. Okay so about a week ago i cleaned my computer with air blower.

I took out graphic card,rams,processor,processor fan and i cleaned it all and put back CORRECTLY.

Now all of a sudden i get black screen on monitor and idk how to fix it. My graphics card doesnt work on primary slot (X16) anymore (even fans dont turn) but when i put it in secondary slot (x4) fans are working. I really dont know what the problem is i took computer to my FRIEND to let him fix it and he told me its probably motherboard/processor problem. I really dont think its processor problem to be honest more like motherboard. Idk maybe a little water got on motherboard and it fried it or something. I would really want to get professional opinion before i go risk buying new parts that ACTUALLY work fine. I would appreaciate any help if possible.

How can we talk to each other now?

Here is yet another question not just for my benefit but for others. Some friends of mine them been talking about how we can get together and share some experiences and ideas and things we want to talk about. But now we are hearing that any kind of meeting as been the forbidden in our area. So unless we get to some kind of special arrangement, we have to stay home with our FAMILIES during this present problem that is going on.

So here's the topic I want to talk about. How hard is it to set up a telephone CONFERENCE with a few people and stream it over the Internet? Yes, I know about telephone conferencing and he gets to be kind of pricey. But there already is in place some kind of system where you can do telephone conferencing with a few people at one time without paying an arm and a leg to a conferencing company. Know what I was thinking is of the few of us got together and did a phone conference and then stream it on the Internet other people can also listen in to what were talking about. Of course, they wouldn't be able to participate, but it might be something they would like to hear as opposed to just staying at home and watching TV or whatever. None of course are other options, everybody had a CB radio they could get on a CB channel and yak away. I guess that might work. Or maybe not.
Anyway, I'm just THROWING this out there are any ideas anybody has about how friend is in family clubs and church groups good to get together and talk to each other without actually being in the same room together or having the need to travel somewhere. In other words, how can you stay home and still be in contact with people you care about?

DaveThis is a guess. Most likely it is a mechanical thing, like a WORE out plug.

Greetings everyone,

Over the last month, Allan has brought up how slow the forum is at loading pages. I've been trying my typical steps I follow when things are slow, and they help temporarily, but things get slow again overtime. Because the server is not stressed, the rest of the site is still always fast, and things get temporarily resolved when repairing the database, I believe it's a database issue.

Over the next few days, I'll be cleaning things up and trying to get things to remain fast. This weekend I'll also be updating the server and also likely converting SMF database tables from MyISAM to InnoDB. I apologize for all the trouble and hope to get this resolved as soon as I can. Unfortunately, since I can't locate an exact cause of the problem, I have to keep trying different fixes until I can get it resolved.
