Solve : Question about Cisco programs?

Answer»

Hi -
I am TRYING to get RID of programs I do not need. I found 3 Cisco program that I don't know they do : Cisco P EAP MODULE, Cisco EAP-FAST module, and Cisco LEAP module. When I went to Wikipedia the answer was not very good. They seem to be some kind of authentication. Do I need these programs? I only use my computer for e-mail, jigsaw puzzles, etc. Based on what I read at http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-windows_programs/uninstalling-programsshould-i-or-shouldnt-i/c67b3bca-114b-4df4-9dbc-e3e6e53e86af, I suggest you leave them installed. soybean -
Thanks for the reply. I will do as you suggest. Bobsoybean -
After I read the item at the address you GAVE I deleted the 3 programs. Those programs are related to network. I am not on a network and do not plan on getting on one. Therefore I don't need those programs. Thanks for your HELP. Bob

Solve : Display Changed?

Answer»

I haven't been here in quite a while so first I must say "Hello" to all my old buddies.
Here is my question. Putting my cursor on a JPEG has always produced the name, size and "Date Picture Taken" and now suddenly there is no name or size and it is date modified.
What the heck happened and how do I change it back? I THINK this is what you are looking for, but not sure. Try these instructions:

Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then press ENTER.
Locate the following subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
Right-click the right side pane, create a new DWORD value, and then name it EnableBalloonTips.
Double-click EnableBalloonTips, and then give it a value of 1.
Close Registry Editor.
Log off Windows, and then log back on.Nope..... no effect at all. Does it have something to do with Folder Options/File Types?OK, i took you down the wrong road. I didnt understand. Yes you are correct. Take a look through the instructions here:
http://www.tipsntrickz.com/folder-size-when-mouse-hover/
I am sorry I confused you EARLIER but I have now run next door to see exactly what information was shown previously when hovering on a JPEG.

Dimensions- In pixels
Date Picture Taken-**/**/***
Camera Model-Kodak EasyShare
Type-JPEG Image
Size-*.**MB

This is how I have always seen it on any XP computer but now I get...

Type-JPEG Image
Date Modified-**/**/****
Size-*.**

This is how image files without EXIF data (scanned images or computer artwork) were shown. The EXIF info is still intact and can be viewed through Properties or changing the view to "Details" but is no longer displayed when hovering. I work with thousands of images and that is just too time consuming.
Don't know if this would make a difference but on my neighbours computer in -Folder Options/File Types/JPG/Advanced/Actions the commands are "open" and "printto" while on mine it lists "Convert image file, open, printto and Recognize".

Does any of this help? BTW, I checked out the link but all I could find related to folders.

You could try verifying the registry key "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image" and checking the InfoTip value.

The default I have in my Windows XP Virtual Machine (Which is practically a clean install so ought to be the default) is

Code: [Select]prop:Dimensions;WhenTaken;DocTitle;DocComments;CameraModel;Type;Size
I gave it a test- I removed the "WhenTaken" entry. When I did and refreshed a folder with pictures, the Tooltip over an image no longer showed the date the picture was taken, so it seems likely this is what you are looking for. From the sounds of it it's been blanked out- it might even be that the entire key is missing.

If you find there actually is no key (for whatever reason). You might be able to use the Tools->Folder Options, File Types TAB to restore the association on JPG/JPEG Files.

Hey BC! Sounds like you are on the right track but how do I check the InfoTip Value? All it says in "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image" is Default and (Value not set). The sub folders aren't any help either.Quote from: techgranny on October 21, 2013, 04:18:40 PM

Ahh, yep, this seems like it's probably the issue then. on my XP Virtual Machine the "image" item has "OpenWithList", "Shell" and "ShellEx" subfolders (subkeys really). You can create new values by right clicking an empty area on the right pane. You'll want a new String Value.

In the actual Image 'folder' itself, I have Default, which has no value set (as in your case) but I also have "Details" with the value "prop:Name;Type;Dimensions;Size;Write", InfoTip, with the value "prop:Dimensions;WhenTaken;DocTitle;DocComments;CameraModel;Type;Size" and TileInfo, with the value "prop:Dimensions;Type;Size".

Sounds like something corrupted some of the association and information. You could replace them manually, but the Image folder/key might not be the only thing affected. My Virtual Machine is pretty much a clean install, I exported the SystemFileAssociations key in it's entirety and zipped that up, you can find that here. Importing that should fix the issue. I'm not 100% on exactly what SystemFileAssociations really does, to be quite honest (that is, how it relates to the other association information) so I don't know if this might actually cause more problems. You might try sticking in the above values manually and seeing if that fixes it. Just remember to re-open your explorer window before GIVING the changes a go.

I downloaded the zip but before replacing the whole thing I would like to try inserting the info manually and since I don't know my string value from my DWORD value, may I trouble you for step by step instuctions? I take it we begin with right-click New but then I go all .Quote from: techgranny on October 21, 2013, 05:03:42 PM
I take it we begin with right-click New but then I go all .

You want a New String Value. It'll make it for you, and it'll highlight the name. To duplicate what I did above you would:

Right-click an empty area, select New->String Value

Type in "InfoTip"

double click that new value to modify it. Enter the text I provided above into the "Value Data" Field. It should be focused by default for InfoTip the value would be: "prop:Dimensions;WhenTaken;DocTitle;DocComments;CameraModel;Type;Size" (don't put the quotes in the value, by the WAY).

Repeat this process for TileInfo (prop:Dimensions;Type;Size) and details (prop:Name;Type;Dimensions;Size;Write). Once you've done that you should be able to F5 an open Explorer window and see the appropriate tooltips for images with EXIF data.YES, YES, YES! Everything is back to normal. You are still the Wonder Kid to me! Quote from: techgranny on October 21, 2013, 05:46:37 PM

Solve : Server update 11/14/2014?

Answer»

As some of you may have seen most of Friday 11/14/2014, there was a notice INDICATING that the server was being updated. I was hoping to get everything moved from the current server to a new server all in the morning (12AM-2AM) for an upgraded CPU, more RAM, and most importantly HDD space since we are near full. Unfortunately, there was many communication problems between me and the tech's doing the job. I should have known better than just to go off of what the sales team was telling me was going to HAPPEN.

I was planning on keeping the forums offline during the move so I didn't have to worry about there being any lost posts during the move and so I didn't have to migrate the MySQL information from one database on one server to another database on another server. Unfortunately, I was not expecting my 20 year old CAT to get real sick TODAY and so was at the vet dealing with him and other personal issues that prevented me from bringing the forums back online after the ISP indicated they would not be able to complete the transfer today.

Sorry for all the downtime and hopefully when the IP transfer is done it will not even be noticed.Sorry to hear about your cat. Hope he is better soon. Thanks for all the effort you put in to making this forum work so well.
Ditto...Thanks for the regards on my cat he had a awful Friday but is doing better or at least as good as 20-year old cat can do. After finally getting the network team at the ISP scheduled, we were able to get the server moved over to a new computer with improved specs and more hard drive space. Unfortunately, it did not go as smoothly as I hoped, but figured it would not be without its hiccups. I am trying to go through all parts I think may have failed and find problems, but if you happen to stumble across anything, please let me know.

Solve : Comcast turning homes into wifi hotspots?

Answer»

I got a automated phone call today from Comcast out of Philadelphia suggesting that I upgrade my cable modem to ensure that I receive all the many benefits their SERVICE has to offer.

First off I own my modem and dont lease it and save money every month not paying the lease fees.

Additionally, I read back in June about the sneaky plan Comcast has to make every Comcast customers home or business to be a Comcast WIFI Hotspot and they are not exactly notifying people that these new wireless modem/routers that they are giving people have this feature enabled.

To me its the same as if a cell phone provider placed a cell phone repeater in every home to extend their service coverage.

I told my wife to ignore the phone calls and only when the modem we have fails to work someday, then we will be forced to upgrade then, but until then lets see how long we can go without being forced into an upgrade that is unnecessary.

More info can be read here about this wifi project that likely many are unaware of.

http://money.cnn.com/2014/06/16/technology/security/comcast-wifi-hotspot/Good point!
Look at this:

Quote

...
And don't expect every passing stranger to get access. The Wi-Fi signal is no stronger than it is now, so anyone camped in your front yard will have a difficult time tapping into the public network. This system was meant for guests at home, not on the street.
As for strangers tapping your router for illegal activity: Comcast said you'll be guilt-free if the FBI comes knocking. Anyone hooking up to the "Xfinity Wi-Fi" public network must sign in with their own traceable, Comcast customer credentials. ...
I really doubt the accuracy of the above statements. More likely Comcast will use this feature to their own advantage in some way. It could give e them an edge over other companies who WANT to get into a market area.
Sometimes a wireless signal can travel well beyond the typical 100 meter (about 300 feet) range expected. Some users can be happy with a 5mps service, which is about what you get with DSL in many places. Whenever the data rate is reduced, the range goes up inversely
Expect this to lead to some exiting changes in home entertainment.

Quote
Comcast spokesman Charlie Douglas promised "there's more than enough capacity" in the cables connecting to people's homes to make this work.
And this way, they have more reasons to throttle people!BT have been doing this in the UK for a while now and I haven't heard of any ill-effects, the public hotspots are totally separate from your home network and are heavily throttled so that they will never use traffic that you require on the main connection. Right now using my laptop in my bedroom, I can see TWO of these "BTWiFi-with-FON" networks from my neighbours.

The way it works here is pretty good, if you chose to operate a hotspot, you then get access to all other hotspots on the system as well as PROFESSIONALLY operated "BT Openzone" hotspots in public places such as coffee shops.

That's not how it works - Speed reduces with distance from the access point, it is not however the case that Comcast will somehow make their wireless signal stronger and that this will somehow make the speed slower. Even if the hardware was replaced with new equipment with a higher transmit power, all this would do would allow the exact same speed to the user however the speed would reduce at a slower rate as they move further from the access point.

I really doubt the accuracy of the above statements.
I don't believe the bit where they say it's targeted at guests, it is definitely meant for the public - If you have guests you either give them your WiFi key or have a separate guest network also with a key. However they will almost definitely route all traffic to the hotspot separately to your own traffic so that it can be traced for illegal activity. BT have operated like this for years and I have not yet heard of a case where a customer has had any legal issues due to operating a hotspot.Quote from: BC_Programmer on November 19, 2014, 06:26:16 PM

Right!
For those who never heard of Bandwidth Throttling ...

In 2007, Free Press, Public Knowledge, and the Federal Communications Commission filed a complaint against Comcast’s Internet service. Several subscribers claimed that the company was interfering with their use of peer-to-peer networking applications. The Commission stated that it had jurisdiction over Comcast’s network management practices and that it could resolve the dispute through negotiation rather than through rulemaking.

Solve : Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet - Anyone know how to scrub personal data off of this??

Answer»

My one friend Lynn needs to scrub her data / passwords for e-mail etc, off of a Galaxy Note 8.0 Tablet before returning it. Anyone have one of these to show how this is DONE. I told her that I would check for her, but that I have never touched one of these to assist much other than getting answers from others online. I am not sure if this device has a flash chip that can be removed and wiped clean and reinstalled etc, although if it does, that would probably be the best way to wipe it clean, however maybe there is a factory RESET option available that I am not aware of.

Below is info as copy/pasted from my e-mail:

Hi Dave,

How are you doing? As luck would have it , I BOUGHT what was advertised as a new Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet on Ebay and used it for a few days to find out that it wasn’t new and might have problems. The seller has owned up to his misrepresentation and is willing to refund my $$ and SHIPPING. I just need to reinitialize or scrub it of my sensitive information and send it back as soon as the refund clears my bank. I had entered emails and done some browsing. I’ve tried to find a feed on doing this task on an android note 8.0 without much luck.
It's called a "factory reset" or "hard reset". You can Google for "factory reset Galaxy Note 8.0". or "hard reset Galaxy Note 8.0". You will get HUNDREDS of hits.

Solve : Deathmatch Review Win 8.1 vs OS X Maverick?

Answer»

This article might be comparing Apples to Oranges ... I haven't tried out 8.1 yet, but will check it out on store demo computers before buying it while my wife is at Walmart etc and I hit the electronics section. Also haven't played with latest MAC OS to say whether I like it any better than the prior. Im still happy with Win 7 and there are no features that Win 8 or 8.1 have that are worth upgrading yet from what I already have.

I am starting to feel like Win 7 will become the new XP and Microsoft will struggle to kill it off like they have with XP. Or at least until Windows 9 replaces Windows 7, however it is unfair to state this since I havent tried 8.1 yet and Windows 9 could be worse if they break the hit and miss OS release pattern.

With my wife eyeballing my netbook last night I think I might be buying a new small compact laptop/netbook this christmas and that will be when I dive into Windows 8.1 to give it a real test drive vs just store demo limitations.

For some reason the layout of the Windows 8 GUI calls out "Microsoft BOB" http://toastytech.com/guis/bobhome1p.png to me, and that was a GUI failure. But with 8.1 maybe its all better now...

For some reason the layout of the Windows 8 GUI calls out "Microsoft BOB"

yeah, what with everything looking and acting completely different in every imaginable way, I can see how you can be reminded of it.

To Segway to the topic however, Being reminded of MS Bob when you use Windows 8.1 is like being reminded of usable software when you use OSX. They have nothing in common.

OSX is trash. It's a mutated algamation of nextSTEP, a forked BSD kernel, and then a bit of OS Classic UI thrown badly on top, which doesn't fit at all because they changed the paradigm. And that was to start, Now they are introducing iOS inspired features and capabilities and turning OSX into their intern SANDBOX. They can let their newly hired folks loose on it because nobody buys Apple Computers for their OS, they buy them because they have managed to become deluded enough to think that an extra one or two thousand dollars is worth the word 'pro' and some brushed metal. Not to mention the ridiculous marketing material that calls things like INSTALLING a fan "engineering breakthroughs".

Quote
Windows 9 could be worse if they break the hit and miss OS release pattern.
There is no hit and miss release pattern. Or, to be more precise, it actually has nothing to do with the actual software.

As far as I an tell the only alleged "misses" are ME, Vista, and, if we count it, Windows 8.

that means 95, 98, and 98SE which were released SEQUENTIALLY were in fact not misses. Windows 2000 was released before ME as well, meaning that was four sequential OS releases that had good reception.

So then we have to wonder why ME got a bad one.

Marketing. First off, before that point they had strongly marketed and pushed that they were merging their consumer and business lines- and creating a Consumer version of Windows NT. It was supposed to be based on the same core as Windows 2000, and was code-named Project Neptune. Project Neptune was effectively cancelled when the Neptune team was merged with the team that was working on the next release of the Business Windows NT system (The "Windows Odyssey" team). This would eventually become Windows XP, but at the time they needed a Consumer release of Windows so they dusted off their 9x code base and started to make some changes to try to mirror some of the things they had in Neptune UI wise as well as hide it's 9x base.

BASICALLY ME got a bad rap because it wasn't based on NT at all- probably the biggest and best reason- and also tries to faux it's way AS an NT system both by using a similar theme to Windows 2000 as well as missing the "Restart in MS-DOS mode" option. To the everyday observery it could almost pass as an NT Windows system. The other reason was that Most vendors didn't want to package ME since it wasn't NT-based, so Microsoft had a looser distribution agreement that allowed them to subsidize the cost of the machines with even more crapware. Systems with Pre-loaded Windows ME have more crapware than pretty much any other Windows OS release on average.

Vista got a bad rap because people are stubborn idiots. They complain about Windows being insecure, so the next version of windows Basically addresses all those security concerns with UAC. Then they turn around and say that Vista is controlling their system. The biggest thing that annoyed the piss out of me in terms of people having no idea what they were talking about was self-professed computer experts saying that "Why is Vista saying I don't have permission? This is my computer waaah" like ignorant morons. The security features limit your security token when you log on and will only give the full token to programs that get your consent through the secure desktop. People saying the previous quote is the exact same as saying "I don't want to have to give programs specific permissions to use my full security token.".

Added to this Vista itself was a Release that came after the largest gap in Windows Releases (2006, XP was released in 2001). Existing users had "5 years of familiarity". Additionally at that point running Windows XP on a modern system was like running Windows 3.1 on a Pentium 2. Moving to Vista was moving to an OS that was built to use the advances in hardware that had occurred in the meantime. it didn't help that because of some issues with how MS setup their Logo requirements, some manufacturers got away with the "Vista Capable" Logo when the system was ridiculously underpowered. (I do like how people managed to blame MS solely for this- as if the manufacturers being massive dishonest cheats is Microsoft's fault). Add to THAT the fact that people would usually just try to upgrade their existing XP systems and it was a recipe for reception disaster. Given all that it actually did quite well.

There were some holdouts who continued to complain about how Vista was somehow some software reincarnation of Hitler and Stalin combined, A good example being "guitar_man" on the CH chat, who would probably struggle to find his rear-end with both hands if he was given a map. Microsoft decided that they would take Vista and their current working Copy of the kernel (they basically continue to work on Windows constantly, more or less) make some minor UI tweaks, fix it up some, and release it as a new version of Windows, relabelled and with a better product launch. This was Windows 7. And it worked- there are lots of people that seem to think Windows 7 fixes some imagined showstopping problems that existed in Windows Vista, but it was pretty much just a second Vista Launch.

Windows 8's negative reception is from people still using the All Programs Menu. They shouldn't be using the All Programs Menu so the fact that it's gone shouldn't be a problem- the All Programs Menu was lobotomized with Vista and 7 anyway, and most people moved to search and found it extremely powerful. I find myself frustrated personally whenever I need to use XP or earlier Windows versions for something, as I frequently find myself trying to type into the Start Menu.Quote

Had a great laugh at this.. That definately was overboard for a definition of Vista. My biggest issue with Vista when it came out was that I had to support many many users at the time, and we had some software that was breaking with Vista and the vendors of the software didnt have cures other than to state to run on on XP, we currently do not support Vista related problems. So on top of people complaining about Vista asking them millions of times "are you sure" you want to do something and the other problems with software features BROKEN due to lack of vendor support, we ended up wiping Vista off of the batch of systems that came in and buying XP Pro for them all. Later systems were able to be purchased with XP or Vista for business class computers and we opted to go with XP instead of Vista without the additional cost to buy XP Pro licenses.

Thanks for correcting me btw in the release pattern. My hit and miss pattern with troublesome OS was more towards Home Computer OS, even though some used early NT on home computers such as myself before XP brought a solid form of NT OS to home computers:

Home Computer OS : 95, 98, Me, XP Home, Vista Home, Windows 7 Home, Windows 8 Home, Windows 8.1 Home
Business Computer OS: NT3.51, NT4, 2000 Pro, XP Pro, Vista Pro, Win 7 Pro, Win 8 Pro, Win 8.1 Pro

Home Computer OS being:

* With Windows 95 being a problem with BSOD's
* With Windows 98 being solid OS
* With Windows Me being a problem with BSOD's, Driver Madness, and Software compatibility issues
* With Windows XP Home being a solid OS
* With Windows Vista (All Versions) being a problem for Drivers, Software compatibility, and annoying security "Are you Sure" to just about everything.
* With Windows 7 ( All Versions ) being a solid OS
* With Windows 8 ( All Versions ) being an issue with Drivers, Software compatibility, and drastically changed GUI
* With Windows 8.1 ( All Versions ) ... Too early to make a determination, but it appears to be better from details on web.

Business OS Computers ( NT ) being pretty good until Vista, although I remember some issues with software compatibility and drivers for early NT in which it was fun trying to get drivers to work with certain systems.

Solve : Photo resolution?

Answer»

Hi,

is it possible to INCREASE the size of a photo without decreasing the resolution of the photo, or the photo clarity. I use Gimp to increase photo size.

Thanks!

-cinque8If you increase the size of an image you will not lose detail. You may have to stand further away to AVOID seeing pixellation etc that is present in the image.

What you run into when you TRY to increase the size of photo is how the pixel count is managed. Unless you have super photo software that renders the image with new pixelation, your picture will not look the same. If you double the size of a picture you will have to hold double the distance to see it clear, if you keep it at the same distance then it will look unfocused.

So to answer your question: Yes, you lose photo clarity.Quote from: Chrisxs5 on October 24, 2013, 01:43:33 PM

Unless you have super photo software that renders the image with new pixelation, your picture will not look the same.

Not sure what you mean by this. If you are talking about interpolation, where the software tries to create new in-between pixels, then this can help (slightly) with the apparent loss of detail caused by magnifying an image (because this is what we are talking about) but and this is a big "but", there is no MAGIC way to create detail that was not there before. I know that on TV cop shows you see them looking at a fuzzy low resolution image of an automobile and the actor clicks on "enhance" and bingo! you can read the license plate but reality is not like that.
I meant expensive! It is hard to give a concise answer without knowing the OP meaning of quality or detail. Does he mean apparent detail after being printed?
Using good editing software ,the size of a photo can be changed to fit a format of a web page or a brochure. But the original photo should be saved in nits original form, using a native format.

Note well, saving a photo in JPG format drops detail and adds artifacts. If using Photoshop, use the recommended native format for the original image.I believe loss of photo clarity varies with, or depends on, the image format you're working with. My question. Does anybody really want this?
Well, I can see how some Internet users may get lured into it. The text you quoted does offer some points that would obviously ATTRACT some Internet users. So, I think you're asking the wrong question, or a question that does not make much sense. The problem here is that Luckey Leap is one of numerous devious online sources of spyware and too many folks don't recognize it due to the deceptive tactics used in promoting it. Yes, I am asking thew wrong question.
Maybe I should ask:
"How can the AVERAGE user know that he is getting Spyware when he wanted something else?"

Some of the most useful free programs I have came from the CNET download site. But lately it is full of *censored* NOBODY ever would want.

I would like to recommend some things I have found to my friends, but it is hard to find a depository that does not include the *censored* stuff that comes with it.

Solve : [e-book] Classic Cryptography Systems?

Answer»

Is there anyone can help me to find a link or a book that explains the classic cryptography systems.
About modern cryptography I have enough literature, I'm just curios to know more about classic one.

This is all about for learning purposes and nothing else.
I searched, and did not find something good for it how they WORK with encryption and decryption.

Thank you in advance for your reply.
Cheers.Quote

Cryptography prior to the modern age was effectively SYNONYMOUS with encryption, the conversion of information from a readable state to apparent nonsense. The originator of an encrypted message shared the decoding technique NEEDED to recover the original information only with intended recipients, thereby precluding unwanted persons to do the same. Since WORLD War I and the advent of the computer, the methods used to carry out CRYPTOLOGY have become increasingly complex and its application more widespread.

So I need more for those aforementioned techniques

I found it easy to read because the work was directed towards just us ordinary people. Yet the concepts very very deep.
Search Amazon for books on PGP. Some old used copies are available at very low cost. Like under $10 plus shipping. Quote from: Geek-9pm on November 26, 2014, 09:03:45 AM

Solve : Save download?

Morning. I am having trouble understanding this. When I get a download (say from an email) or I try to download MUSIC. it asks do you want to run or save it When I press run at the bottom of the screen this comes (see attachment)but I don't know what to do with it ,it asks would I like to save it I click yes, and another box comes up. And asks the same and so on. If these are being saved I haven't a clue where.how do I open the downloads.
can anyone help. PLEASE.
.ivanoe, did you intend to put an attachment in your forum post? NONE shows up. Please try again.

What version of Windows do you have? If you download music, are you doing that via web browser? If so, which browser?

Morning SOYBEAN. THANKS for replying. I am on windows 7. all I am trying to do is put some music on my PC. I want to download some off other
Legal sites. and some off my own discs. But when I try to download this what I get. hope you get the attachment this time.

[recovering disk SPACE, attachment deleted by admin]The files are probably going to the standard Windows folder for Downloads. But, you can verify the location downloads get saved to by clicking the down arrow to the right of the Save button, selecting Save As from the drop-down menu and then pausing to see the save-to location. If desired, you can change the location on that screen.

Solve : MS-DOS-7.1.zip is blocked?

Answer»

A large NUMBER of web sites claim they have for download this:
MS-DOS-7.1.zip
When you stat the download, you will get a message for Microsoft Security Essentials STATS that a THREAT has been blocked.

That collection of MS-DOS programs in not distributed nor endorsed by Microsoft. It is an independent endeavor to promote use of MS-DOS 7.1 as a 'free' dos for any PC. In fact, MS-DOS is copyright by Microsoft. Yes, they not longer support it, but it is still MS property.

That does not mean you can not use MS-DOS for your own entertainment. You can get a legal copy of MS-DOS from dealers who bought up surplus Windows 98SE CDs ears back. Maybe you have one in your own collection.

Also, you can put MS-DOS on a USB stick. If you are legal owner of a Windows 98 CD with product KEY, you can use one copy on one computer. But you can not upload nit sell it or even give it to ANYBODY else. Not even your Grandmother.

Now, is that what you understand?

I have had success with FreeDOS in situations where you want to implement a system running DOS but dont want to break the law using duplicates of an original DOS set etc. I was introduced to FreeDOS a while back when a college professor wanted to cover DOS, but didnt want to work in the Windows Shell but strictly DOS.

There is no need of DOS 7.1 with FreeDOS that I can think of: http://www.freedos.org/DaveLembke,
I am with you. No need to break the law. There are some things you want to do with DOS and not Linux. You may need to run diagnostics under DOS that use the MS API.
So, can you really run programs written for MS-DOS inside of FreeDOS? Many such programs are GPL or pubic domain. But the issue is getting a good DOS that will act like the MS DOS.
And what about using expounded memory? Does it work? In MS-DOS your had EMM386. Does FreeDOS have an equivalent?

But if you can spend up to about $180, you could consider:
Barnes & Noble Nook HD+
Barnes & Noble Nook HD
Google Nexus 7
Kindle Fire HD

Here is one report on the lower-cost Barnes & Noble item:
Quote

The good: The Nook HD has a light, comfortable design with a sharp screen and a well-implemented user-profiles feature. Books, videos and magazines look great, and the microSD slot takes some of the sting out of the lack of internal storage.
The bad: It's missing some typical tablet features, and 8 GB is still a low starting point for storage. Fingerprints easily sully the screen and performance can be sluggish at time
IMHO check out how any android does on a Net-fix video. If you don't like the way way it looks and sounds on streaming video, pass it up.
I would avoid a tablet running Android with less than 1GB of RAM, especially with Android 4.x onwards 512MB of RAM isn't enough for a smooth experience.
Some cheap tablets are real disasters, OTHERS aren't. I have a cheap tablet, cost me around £40, with a 1.6GHz dual core CPU, 1GB of RA, and Android 4.1. The 7" screen's resolution isn't as good as, say, a £100 tablet, but other than that it's fine. It's quick and smooth enough, it runs everything I've asked of it, and it doesn't feel flimsy, PLUS the battery is decent. Thanks everyone and this was especially important to be aware of.

I've never SEEN an upgradeable tablet, doubt one would be feasible due to their small size.

And yes, I was referring to system memory, rather than storage - even the cheapest tablets today almost all come with at least say 4GB of flash, which is enough to be going on with. Many even higher end tablets don't have a memory card slot for expansion, but to be honest do you really need more than the 16GB that's standard on a decent tablet these days? Don't forget many support USB OTG so you can plug in a flash drive if you're so inclined, for additional storage.

Solve : How to register 100s quickly??

Answer»

Background: We do a camp every summer that has hundreds (300-500) of kids come through each night for an entire week (nonprofit). The first night we have an extended registration (1.5 hours) to get the kids registered. We have about 60% pre-registered online, but still have to get them their packets. After that it takes us about 45 minutes each night.

Issue: That is way to much time. (need to get night 1 down to 30 minutes and each additional down to 15)

Resolution Ideas: So my thought was to setup a database with bar-code label registrations. We will open a pre-registration packet pickup with bar-coded wrist bands. Then we can scan them as they walk through the door. Then we could just have them return with the same bands each night. Then we would only have to deal with lost bands and new registrations.

Actual Question: Anyone have any ideas to the proper software at affordable pricing? I can handle the infrastructure, just need to figure out the rest.

Not sure what is affordable for your budget, but similar systems I have worked with in the past cost between $5000 and $20,000 to implement. *This price range was the price tags we were looking at for a turn key SOLUTION and what was to be OFFERED to us as solutions. The hardware is costly new, and the software they ALSO do not give away, and you will likely need to change a preexisting product to work for your needs or hire someone to write an interface tied to a database for you to create the rapid data entry database.

We had one system at a Cooperative Food Store that was a piece of junk that cost $5000 and we ended up doing away with it and instead issued members of the food store membership numbers, and they would tell their member number at the check out to apply their purchases to thei account. At the end of every year they would get a percentage back based on how much they spent and the not for profit business ending the year with profits earned against operating costs. So if they had $700,000 above operating costs of 23 Million, the $700,000 was refunded to the members based on who spent more got more back etc.

The lowest cost solution would be preregistration and issuing them a number on a card or bracelet and have someone or group of people with multiple computers keying in each 3 digit member number since you will have less than 1000 people.

The processing is fastest with multiple lines and a computer at the end of each one with someone keying in the 3 digit number and hitting the enter key which then allows for the next 3 digit number to be entered.

You can get through them all very quickly, and each computer can have a copy of the database and interface running locally, and later at your convenience you can merge the data into a single database if needed or if you want to go one step further workstations connected over a network to a central transactional database accepting all the numbers.

If you already have the computers and MS Office or ANOTHER Database featured product and are good with creating a database setup for this, it can be done very inexpensively.

If you really want to go the route of a bar code and barcode scanner its likely to be more expensive than you are intending to pay for it, however... a friend of mine showed me an app for his iPhone that decodes BARCODES and I suppose if you had an app tied to a database you can save yourself from buying barcode scanners when the camera on the phone can read and decode the number, however porting that info to a database is something I havent done yet and would likely be also expensive unless someone else here has tied an iPhone to a database to share the setup process for software etc.

My friend a coworker, was showing me how his iPhone can read an IMB barcode with the camera and decode the IMB barcodes on mail, since we work at the USPS and wanted to look at and verify the data in the IMB was correct for the mailpiece the barcode was sprayed on, and it worked out well... more info here: http://www.appszoom.com/android_applications/tools/imb-reader_izzy.html

While an IMB would be overkill for the data amount you need to contain in a barcode, a simple barcode would work out ok with a reader that can read it. BUT... they are slower to decode barcodes than a laser scanner as for with the camera you have to have the barcode a certain distance away and correct lighting to get it to lock onto it and process the result.Quote from: DaveLembke on October 31, 2013, 03:33:05 PM

I cant believe I didnt think of Access for the database. I could actually pull a lab server and make several server VMs; use a couple of Surface tablets with some honeywell hand scanners. That might work. It would be lots of work for me, but should make everything easier for the volunteers. I could then do the separate databases at the doors for each sport we offer. Since camp is only a week, I wouldnt need to purchase any licensing either.

And yes, 5k is a little over budget. LOLGlad to see you can piece together a solution from my example and Access Database use. Didnt know you already had scanners too. You should be all set since you already have the means, just need to create the database etc and link the tablet scanner entries to it and print out barcodes for the kids on stickers or something that can be wrapped around a bracelet or stuck to a shirt etc. My biggest worry was how to get the barcodes to work. So I played around last night with it. And it will can a number in. So I will use pre-printed barcodes. So my plans are to create the initial database and then a checkin database with just tag ID and date time. Then I will use some join commands to merge it all afterwards.Human barcodes....i guess Orwell was right after all.OK, so while looking for a good registration template for Access I ran across a website called Eventzilla.net. I promise I am not affiliated but how awesome they are.

In ten minutes I was able to setup an event, with online registration. The attendee will be able to print the ticket and bring it with a qr code on it. Then I can download their app and scan the code on the day of the event.

Problem solved!

Oh and its all free for our event! Check it out. eventzilla.net

Solve : Interesting Wireless Hard Drive enclosure that can run w/o wall power for 5 hrs?

Answer»

Looking on newegg at the deals and close OUTS. This CAUGHT my EYE. Seems like a good deal, but I have no application/need for it. In addition to operating as a wireless external hard drive, it can also act as an AP to bridge different networks etc, and run up to 5 hours off of an internal lithium battery.

*While I can understand a need for a wireless external hard drive for a home where everything is wireless, I find the internal rechargeable battery feature rather odd unless it is used as a media file server for use on a trip and your mobile DEVICES that connect to it for content to play cant be burdened with the storage of a selection of MOVIES etc because of their limited storage capacity of say 8 or 16GB.

Solve : Laptop Reccomendations?

looking to get a laptop and need some input...

Macbook pro 15" 2.8 GHz i7 w/16 gb of ram dedicated graphics w/ 2gb, 512 flash STORAGE and retina display (2560x1600) plus apple care
3048.00 as configured

or

THINKPAD T540 2.8 GHz i7 w/16 gb of ram, dedicated graphics w/ 1gb, windows 7 pro, 512 SSD, 9 cell battery and a 3K display (2880x1620)
2828.70 as configured

or

what do you recommend?

I do use mac (wanted a newer computer other than one with windows 8) but also windows 7 is my favorite EDITION of Windows so far since the release of XP

Will be doing some digital graphics work w/ Adobe Illustrator and maybe some other Adobe programs and maybe some 3d work in rhino 5 and/or Solidworks plus your normal web browsing in chrome and Microsoft Office 2010/2011

Do you have anything important that requires the Mac?
It looks like you prefer windows programs.
So, buy the Think pad. Bit you must move up to Windows 8.1 and leave 7 behind. That is what Microsoft is telling the world.

Yes, you can run Windows on a Mac. But buy the Thinkpad.

EDIT: And start with 8GB of RAM. Prices are up again. You don't need 16GB for anything you do.
ok, the docking station and trackpoint made me go Lenovo than HP.... Macbook air has a real good 3rd party dock now that let's you use the internal display other then having to use an external one....plus I don't ever think I will be using Solidworks... just had to include it. I don't know what I will be studying in collage next year.... most of the applications I will use on a regular basis will both available on windows and mac so does not matter. I use mac now and will probably buy an external monitor with any computer I buyWhile it would be great to give you a simple answer, this is really one of those questions that is up to you in the end. Both are great machines so it really comes down to what will work best for you. I currently own a ThinkPad T440s and own a 13" MacBook Pro which I used to use as my main laptop. Out of the two I prefer the ThinkPad but that's just me.

The ThinkPad is by far the more flexible machine with a proper docking station, upgradable parts and swappable, high capacity batteries however it doesn't run MacOS if that's what you prefer. The T540p is however quite a bit bulkier than the MacBook Pro.

You will need to think whether you want MacOS or Windows as that's going to be the main difference between the two.Ok, I like both but I think that I will need to see what kind of software I will be using as it seems that the one program I'm least likely to use is only available on windows 7/8... I defiantly will not buy a windows 8 computer as I don't need the windows store or tile apps

Now would 2 gb of dedicated graphics beat out 1 gb of dedicated graphics when doing stuff like Digital Graphics, would that be an overkill to have 2g of dedicated graphics or that does not matter? The video memory isn't hugely important, what models are the GPUs in question here?Mac has an NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M

the Lenovo has an NVIDIA GeForce GT 730M graphicsIn that case the GPU in the mac is quite a bit more powerful. Whether that will make a difference really comes down to whether the software you use can take advantage of the GPU when rendering, you would need to look into this.ok, that sounds good

Solve : New Laptop Purchase - $269.99 ASUS X401A-BCL0705Y?

Answer»

Just picked this laptop up to replace my Toshiba NB205-N210 Netbook which I purchased also on a Black Friday deal back in November 2009. The old netbook is running Intel Atom processor and Windows XP Home SP3 on 2GB RAM. I figured its been 4 years with lots of use and I am starting to feel limited in what I can use it for due to the WEAK processing power of mainly the GPU.

Looking at the specs of this online the CPU even though its a cheap Celeron is far more powerful than the Intel Atom I have. It scores 3x better. The Intel Integrated HD 2500 graphics are way better than the Netbooks GPU which was the equivilant of a GeForce 4 at best. According to looking at the benchmarks of the Intel HD 2500 GPU it will be ABLE to play GAMES that the Atom Netbook could not handle. While this new laptops GPU is not going to run any high end games, it is not expected to run them, and so it should be the perfect match for what I need and cheap.

Also I am finally going to have a computer that RUNS Windows 8, which will be updated to 8.1 if it doesnt come already installed with 8.1.

The only single review on newegg for this laptop of 2 of 5 eggs was an idiot that didnt know that it didnt come with an optical drive, so to rate it 2 of 5 eggs was not right since it wasnt neweggs fault or the products fault that the customer didnt check out the specs first. I already own a external DVD-RW drive which I used for my netbook on occasion, so I am all set with installing software that needs to be installed off of discs.

Looking elsewhere I find this rated 4 of 5 stars, so I figured its worth purchasing it. I have had other ASUS products in the past without any issues and hopefully this one will also work flawlessly.

* Even though this laptop can only handle a maximum of 4GB of RAM, of which it comes with the maximum installed, it should be plenty for what I need for the next 4 or 5 years.

I just couldnt pass up a $269.99 price tag ( $60 OFF Instant Savings Deal from normal price tag of $329.99 ) for what I am getting in this laptop for features and specs on the Newegg Black November Deals .... I cant see finding a better laptop for similar price tag or cheaper, and its ASUS and not Acer or another risky quality brand so hopefully it will be a wise upgrade choice to the netbook.

Solve : Computer usage history question?

Answer»

A friend of mine came up to me today and asked me if there was a way to keep a history of system usage so he knows how long people are logged in for as well as how many run hours each system in the fleet of systems accumulates.

I told him that if he wanted to know how many run hours the system has had, that he could use a utility to read in the number of hours the hard drive has been running and that's a pretty safe assessment of how many hours the system was actually powered SINCE these workstations probably are not set to putting the HDD into a rest state while idle, so they are probably spinning for the whole time that the system is booted.

I also told him that I know of a easy method to keep track of who logs on when, but that I am unsure of how you would gather the logoff time of the users, and so you could see how many different times during the day a specific user logged on and at what times, but that I am not aware of an easy method to log the logout as for a process would probably have to run at logoff or shutdown to record this event. I would think that you would either need a service that is monitoring another service to test to see if the system is active, and when this special service detects the loss of a service that it is monitoring, it then knows that its a logoff or shutdown and it then writes this to the log for that user of which is either logging off of shutting down the computer for the day.

I shared with him this batch that can be used to record when people are logging in, by placing it into the startup folder to run at logon, in which each user is given a different user ID # and log file to write to, such as Bob = User1 and would have the following batch in the startup of his profile

@echo. ------------------------------ >>c:\UserActivityLogs\user1.log
@echo. %date% at %time% >>c:\UserActivityLogs\user1.log

And Jim = User2 and he would have a batch like this ONE LOCATED in his startup location of profile

@echo. ------------------------------ >>c:\UserActivityLogs\user2.log
@echo. %date% at %time% >>c:\UserActivityLogs\user2.log

He was hoping that I knew of a free or inexpensive solution vs having to get some information from crystaldiskinfo for smart data from local hard drives and other data from a batch process that runs quickly at logon to log the date and time that a user logged on.

Anyone have any solutions, either a batch method, other coded programming method, or an already available software utility out there that can give him the information that he is trying to gather?

I guess from what he was telling me, his boss wants to know the logon/logoff behavior to know who requires computer access more than others, and the computer runtime info which could be gathered from the HDD smart data with system run hours which can be viewed through a HDD utility such as crystaldiskinfo to figure out who should be issued the newer systems of the next fleet of computers to put in place.

I stated that shouldn't you just figure out what systems are slower or older than others and go that route of replacing them, this way your pulling out the lesser productive systems from the fleet of systems and replacing them with new, and then the next go around for system replacements you can then target what is now the slower/older systems and replace them that way, as well as anyone with very important roles with computer access be given the new systems as a priority of issue, and their prior systems if they are worthy of being retained, then given to someone else who it might be an upgrade for, and get rid of that other persons slower/older computer.

He stated that they bought 230 systems all at the same time 4 years ago, a bunch of HP Business Class SFF systems, and so there is no weaker or older system in the mix, as for they are all the same processors and just a few of them would have more RAM than the others, so because they have 230 systems and are buying 50 new systems for 2015 as APPROVED for the next year upgrade, they instead of just deciding randomly who should get the newer HP EliteDesk 800 G1 Business Class Core i5 systems to replace the Pentium E5200 Dual-Cores of the HP DC7900's at a cost around $42,500 USD are trying to go about the distribution of the new systems strategically to place the more powerful workstations in locations where productivity may be able to be improved with users not having to wait for outlook and other apps to open etc.

I told him as far as productivity goes... you cant rule out that someone is just surfing the web instead of doing their job during that time though right and so if you have someone who uses the corporate systems for other than business, they might get a upgrade out of this instead of a true worker who is processing paperwork when away from the computer etc, who would be the better choice for a faster system.

He laughed and said that fortunately they have only had a few users do that and they have been warned not to use the corporate systems for their own computer use. He said that the biggest issue today is not the users using the corporate systems wasting productivity surfing the web etc, but that because so many people have portable devices these days, they can essentially text or surf on their own service and unless someone catches them doing this, they get away with it and it definitely affects productivity and quality of work when their mind is not in their work but elsewhere.

Solve : Black Friday gift to self 8-core FX-8350 for $139.99?

Answer»

Finally the CPU I have WANTED for 1.5 years has dropped to a price I am willing to pay $139.99. Cant wait to get it and finally complete my new gaming system which has been getting by with the Athlon II x4 620 in the socket AM3+ motherboard until I could get this CPU.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113284&cm_re=8350-_-19-113-284-_-Product

I almost bought the 6-core AMD FX-6300 instead for $89.99, but when the CPU I really wanted was only $50 away, I WALKED away from computer for 30 minutes to really think it over and decide to get the 8-core or the 6-core and decided to just finally get it. Here is the 6-core they have on sale: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113286

Now I can give my wife the Athlon II x4 2.6Ghz CPU as an upgrade to her Core 2 Duo E6600 through a motherboard swap, and then upgrade my DAUGHTER from her Core 2 Duo E4500 2.2Ghz with 2MB Cache to the E6600 2.4Ghz with 4MB Cache.

Solve : New tablet for Grandma?

Answer»

My Grandma doesn't barely use her laptop anymore, only for her genealogy. She has a nook and smartphone but she says she uses the nook for most everything (smartphone when out of the house) and is not practical for anything other then e-books... she needs one that she can go online with, Email, read her e-books on, and do her genealogy on... (she has a 10" nook HD Plus) a digitizer and keyboard dock would be nice but not a requirement... it would most likely be a full windows 7 or 8 tablet

Suggestions?Quote

Suggestions?
Yes, lots of those.
I am 76 years old and have used PCs for many years and now I find that I can not readily adapt to new stuff. It is like shooting at a moving target and you don't know which way it will move next. So I do believe it is hard for older persons to pick up on the new technology. Because is changes all the time.

But, if you think Grandma is OK with using a Windows tablet, then that is the way to go. But Windows 7 is a bad choice. Microsoft is putting all effort into making Windows 8.1 the best windows ever. Until summer of next year.
As seen of TV, the new Windows Surface is more adaptable that an Mac book.

You will be looking over the offerings of:
Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Microsoft, Sony, and Toshiba.
All above offer Windows 8.1, but it is hard to find any just like the Windows surface Pro. So you will have to decide.

If Grandma is OK using Windows, don't get her a Chrome book.

My feeling is that this is whats experts r will tell you.
EDIT:This is a very new review of the Surface Pro and similar things.

Avoid RT. It is not going anywhere.
With Windows 8.1 new apps will be coming soon. I just found on the the apps I really like on my iPhone is now available for Windows 8.1 and I tried it. This has given me a more positive attitude about Windows 8.1 and now I am willing to more up so I can have all the apps that the third-party PEOPLE are going to produce.
For most of use old-timers, sped is not so important. But we do like a good app that can bring use the information we need. An app that is easy and smooth and will interface well with other tools. One of the criticisms against Windows was the lack of free or low cost application programs tailored to specific needs. But that is now changing. You seem to be contradicting yourself. I can't make sense of it. You've said she has a Windows 8.1 laptop with enough power for her normal usage, and yet you are asking for suggestions for a tablet running Win 8.1. Is the objective here simply to get a smaller computer? Does she want a light weight computer to take AWAY from home? I don't the point being made anywhere in your comments. Or, are you saying she just wants a smaller device to carry around the house?

Solve : Rumor: Windows RT not dead yet?

Answer»

Then is not news. It is a weak rumor. And it started months ago. The only reason to bring this up is that some people PUT credence in this unfounded fable.
Here is one of the sources:
http://www.technologytell.com/gadgets/148836/rumor-windows-rt-dead-yet-10-6-inch-surface-3-tablet-due-october/
The actually say:
Quote

Only Neowin SEEMS to corroborate Win RT’s survival, and they’ve been fairly spot-on with their Microsoft gossip of late. So as crazy as it seems, a 10.6-inch Surface with Windows RT 8.1 pre-loaded is a DEFINITE possibility. Come on, MS, do you even WANT to succeed in the tablet arena?
Does anybody here believe this?

Solve : Kindle 2 Screen Issue?

Answer»

Hi, my name is Horacio and I'm new to the forums. Hope you guys can HELP!

I have a Kindle 2 and its screen now shows up like this:

Original image:

A
/
B
/

Image actually displayed:

A
/
A
/

The screen itself works, but the bottom half is the repeated upper half at all times. When flipped to landscape, the left half is the repeated right half at all times.

What could be happening? I got this as a "gift" given it wasn't powering up. Managed to reset, power it up and that's what I got. I updated to the latest firmware and it remains the same. Reseated the screen flatcable 3 times, same RESULTS.

Here's a video showing how it works at the moment:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIYI4WstriY

Can anyone give advice?

Thanks a lot!I'd perform a factory ( HARD ) reset on it, and if that doesnt fix it then send it back under warranty if there is a warranty.

For it to split the display into 2 halves of the screen is rather interesting. Never seen this before, and it is either an option in a config setting to be this way or it has a hardware failure.

If a config issue the hard reset will fix this, if a hardware failure it will remain this way in which it should go back under warranty.

Also its not the display that is acting up, its the CHIP that sends the display info to the LCD display. I THINK this chip is on the main board of the kindle and not on the back of the display itself.

Hopefully since you opened this you didnt void the warranty. If there are pry marks to split the case to get inside they might reject the warranty based on damaged inflicted by customer which they can decline to claim free REPAIRS for.

Hard Reset

Performing a hard reset on your Kindle 2 will wipe out all user data, so make sure to make a backup of all your files before proceding.

In order for you to Hard reset you Kindle 2, all you have to do is slide and hold the power button for 30 seconds and release it then immediately press and hold the home button and wait for until the screen flashes. If done it correctly, your kindle should reboot itself to its factory defaults.

Solve : The 5 Versions of Windows 8.1?

Answer»

The link and quote below is to an article with copyright 2014.
Quote

The 5 VERSIONS of Windows 8.1
By Woody Leonhard from Windows 8.1 All-in-One For Dummies

Windows 8.1 appears in five — count ’em, five — different versions. Three of those versions are available in 32-bit and 64-bit incarnations. That makes eight different versions of Windows to choose from. And if you want Windows Media Center, you only have two choices, and it’ll cost you more.

Fortunately, most people need to concern themselves with only three versions, and you can probably quickly winnow the list to one. Contemplating the 32-bit conundrum may exercise a few extra gray cells, but with a little help, you can probably figure it out easily. ...
http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/the-5-versions-of-windows-810.html
Comments? Happens every version...Old News...not suprised at all...There are only two versions available for the average user to PURCHASE. RT is not a full OS and won't come preinstalled on anything other than tablets. 8.1 for Emerging Markets is effectively the replacement for Windows Home Basic, in that it's not available in every location. Enterprise again isn't available for retail purchase, exactly like Windows 7 Enterprise. This LEAVES two choices - 8.1 and PRO.
This is even simpler than the options available in Windows 7, the only real difference from 7 is that you need to BUY Pro if you want Media Center whereas of course in Windows 7 this was available in "lower" editions. Also, when you but Windows 8.1 or 8.1 Pro you buy both the 32-bit and 64-bit version. You don't have to choose one or the other, just like Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

Okay, I have a Digitech Computer KEYBOARD: Model XC-4943. Some of the letters on the right side have numbers on them and in order to type wih the letters I have to press and hold the function button. I have tried looking for a way to reverse it, so that I have to do the process to use the numbers instead of letters, but not even GOOGLE can help me. There is no instruction manual and my RESEARCH is fruitless. I just want to type normally - not have to retype words because some of them have numbers where letters should be. Someone please help? Would be very much appreciated.

1) Is the recipient notified that I am the one who has thanked them?
2) If so, is the recipient notified CONCERNING which SPECIFIC topic/thread/post I am thanking them for?

ThanksThe "recipient" is not notified that anyone has thanked him or her.Unfortunately not, although it would be very nice if it did that.Either way it's nice that you take the time to Thank the volunteers...Okay. Thanks all for your responses.

Solve : Relative shkortcut address in Windows?

Answer»

I have a hard time doing relative links in WINDOWS. And it is not due to overexposure to Linux. It is just hard to remember.
Say you have some shortcuts on your desktop and the referee to files found in different places. If you are still using XP. like me, the system drive mightn't be C: because if you have two installs of XP on the same drive, they both can not be C:. The other is D: or E: for even F: and if you copy all the shortcuts from one system onto the desktop of ANOTHER system, they WOULD not work. Unless your do it right.

I just found a question on a Microsoft forum about how to adjust your shortcuts so then become 'transportable' in case you move then to another desktop.
How to create a shortcut with relative path
What is says is basically this:
Quote

Make a new shortcut to: cmd.exe /c start.

Now right-click on it and get properties of the shortcut (shortcut tab).

The full shortcut path should have been set to this:
%windir%\system32\cmd.exe /c start .
So I want to SHARE that with you.

Solve : Extract multiple data from one file in Excel?

I've to create a master excel sheet that contains various data from different excel files. The excel file comes in everyday and it contains multiple data but I only need the key data that have already been set specific cells. I've managed to write the codes for all this but now I've encountered one PROBLEM. For each data to be extracted, I keep having to click on the file based on the number of data. For example, 3 data, I've to select the file 3 times.

My question is, is there a way for me to extract all these data by selecting the file once? The FOLLOWING is the code I have.

Your help will be very much appreciated.

Code: [Select]Private Sub CommandButton1_Click()

Dim flPath As String, flName As String, frmla As String, shtName As String, i As Integer, j As Integer '>>Declaring variables

flPath = "" '>>Daily Production Log - calls the file
flName = "Production Data" '>>Master Database - Data to be extracted TO this file
shtName = "PAGE 01" '>>Current sheet containing the production data in the daily production log
frmla = Replace(shtName, "'", "''") '>>Function that replaces cell's values

With Worksheets("Daily Production") '>>Current sheet in the new file

.Range("A" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Offset(1).Value = Date - 1 '>>Inserts date from previous day

End With

With Worksheets("Daily Production")

.Range("B" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Offset(1).Formula = "='" & frmla & "'!R43"

.Range("D" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Offset(1).Formula = "='" & frmla & "'!R47"

End With

Solve : Sound Bar?

Answer»

I was looking to get a sound bar, and was looking between the Dell™ AC511 and the Dell™ AX510PA... I ALWAYS thought that usb powered speakers were not as powerful as AC powered speakers, I might be wrong...

Thoughts?AC powered speakers have approximately 1500 Watts of power available while USB can produce MAYBE 50 Watts at max so AC powered speakers can certainly be more powerful than USB speakers. However, it also depends on the design of the amplifier and the efficiency of the speakers as to which system will be "louder" or even better sounding. It's quite possible to design a USB speaker system that sounds much better than a poorly DESIGNED AC powered one. I know the AC powered speakers put out 10 watts of RMS (max) power but I don't THINK that they list RMS for the usb variant

Never click "unsubscribe" from within junk e-mail. If you do...you're basically telling the sender that they have found a valid e-mail address and will sell your e-mail adress to other companies that will spam you.

That's why your junk e-mail is out of control.

You may want to change your e-mail address.Quote from: hankfarkas on March 13, 2009, 01:21:46 PM

It has a junk filter that you train yourself, SIMPLY by USING it.
This won't stop the spam mail from arriving, but it helps MAKE it more manageable.

Solve : .sub file?

Answer»

hey I have a movie which is a .mkv file "cause it's high definition" and I'm converting it to an mpeg4 for my ipod the .mkv CAME with a .sub file so I'm assuming it's the subtitles. Using VISUAL hub I'm converting them but I selected (stitch files together), KNOW because I stitched them together dose that mean when its done being converted to mpeg4 the subtitles will be included with the film or not? just thought id give it a try even THOUGH by stitching the videos together it will TAKE much longer to finish converting! i really hope it's worth it!well get mkvmerge. I believe the file is here: http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/

Anyway, use mkvmerge to add your subtitles to your video and then convert to mp4 which then will have subtitles because now the subtitles are hardcoded to the video which means it is nonremovable.

Thanks.Name the website so that we can try too...letsgopens.comAll it says is this.

Please note that you will need to enter a VALID e-mail address before your account is activated. The ADMINISTRATOR will review your account and if approved you will receive an e-mail at the address you specified.
I tried to register USING a Hotmail address but it was rejected "The email address used is not ACCEPTABLE on this site", guess the owners don't like providers like Hotmail, Yahoo, GMail etc. Registering using my isp mail system was accepted without problem.

So try your isp mail address.

Some forums won't accept Hotmail, Yahoo, GMail etc. because they are vulnerable to abuse (ie) people can use them as a disposable email and SPAM the forums. An ISP provider is much less likely to be used by a spammer. Probably why......and in those cases, you can surely use email address provided by your ISP.What if my ISP provides premium Hotmail accounts?
Oh! Now what : P

I cant stand sites like this.
There are better ways to get around these problems, and I really with some of these webmasters would look farther into the issues first.
It's probably not a heavily moderated site so it's a stupid but necessary precautin they are taking. If they have had big issues with spammers or (it's a sports board) flamers I would imagine it was a necessary step.Either that or they just don't care...

Solve : Printing Images in Photo Albums?

Answer»

I have just finished writing my travel diary after a holiday in Germany. I now wish to print about thirty images. I once had software which allowed me to select the number of images per page and would then arrange them so that both portrait and landscape images appeared the right way up. There were lots of other useful functions, but unfortunately I can't remember what the software was. I have software which came with my Panasonic and Canon cameras but they don't allow me to do the above. Neither does Picassa. In the past I have resorted to importing the images into Excel worksheets, which WORKS WELL as I can resize the images anyway I want, however they are SOMETIMES stretched.

Can anyone recommend free software which would do what I want? I would also like to be able to print captions below or beside the images.irfanview . com , arcsoft.com , vicman software photo EDITOR , hope those do your job

if you want to make a video of your photos " microsoft photo story 3 for windows "

if you want to mess around with them " cartoonist "

Since I havent really used vista I told her about youd's but she doesnt want to mess it up like bsod or something realated.Every program and especially Microsoft programs should get placed into the Windows Start menu. If it's not seen in the Start menu it's likely it was not installed on the computer, she can try INSTALLING again without FEAR of causing errors.

You can also do a Google image search for examples of what the Vista start menu looks like if you need more help with guiding her.I've noticed some newer games don't create shortcuts or start menu directories on vista; instead they use the vista games explorer thing. It's in start>games.thats interesting, its not so much that but she doesnt want it to like have sys FILES corrpted.she had installed twice with the same results. The requirements for running Flight Sim are pretty strong...have you checked whether the laptop meets them ? >thed guy at best buy said that it would if we really have to have them I'l get the specsQuote from: squall_01 on March 21, 2009, 03:54:02 PM

Solve : Computer locks up while downloading .pdf"s?

Answer»

Every TIME I download a .pdf file, my computer seems to freeze. The file does load, but it won't allow me to cancel the download or minimize the window or anything else, till it's finished. Ctrl>Alt>Delete does nothing. Is this a common thing or should I be concerned?

Alan <>< I have dial-up with Mozilla Firefox 2.0 and an accelerator from Propel Software. As to what's running in the background, I guess I'll have to find another pdf to download and check it out, but I do close all windows, if that helps.Yes, it is exactly as it is with Dial-Up.
It will make you wonder if something has happened and then POOF !! There it is.....
The larger the file the longer it takes but there is nothing to worry about'
it just loads the whole file before allowing you to continue. Why haven't you updated Firefox? The latest version is 3.0.8. If the dialup download time is a concern, you can order it on CD at http://store.mozilla.org/category.php?catid=1

However, I'm not suggesting this has anything to do with your question re: PDF downloads. I think Laska's reply hit the target. Keep in mind some PDF files are quite large, sometimes larger than necessary because the creators did a poor job of optimizing file size.Quote from: soybean on March 31, 2009, 09:57:27 AM

Why haven't you updated Firefox?
I tried to update, but the new Firefox does not support the latest version of the dial-up accelerator my ISP provides me. It is very fast, and necessary for my sanity, and there is only dial-up in my area.
The worst part of the pdf problem is that sometimes, you're not given the size of the file, so it's basically a coin toss.DLoad and install Foxit Reader...
Adobe is a resource HOG.

Solve : wii connecting threw laptop????

Answer»

I try an connect my wii to the hotspot in my grandmothers area the THING is that the connection isnt strong ENOUGH to KEEP me on-line. But I recently have got a laptop that can connect with out any issues. Is it possible to connect to the laptop and then to the wireless hot spot or something?Have you tried moving the ROUTER to a different spot? Not if you can't use the laptop as a access point in infrastructure mode at the same time, or the wii will have to be ABLE to connect to AD-HOC connections.English, that isnt possible since its a hotspot and I'm near the edge of it.

can $ 264.00
usa $ 213.00
russian robles 7169.00

[attachment deleted by admin]Too uch to pay for a large screen. GO to a LOCAL drug store and buy some rading glasses. A 1.5x reading pair with effectivley enlarge a 17 inch monitor to over 35 inches. At a fraction of the cost, and does not take up more desk space.Looks like about the going rate
Check things like Contrast Ratio, Refresh rate and resolution

Go Here for more info if you wish:

Rubles it's a crappy deal.
Dollars...not bad.
But price-wise you could do better with an ACER monitor...great pricinng...great results.lidl store

Solve : Best free site to download maps?

Answer»

I have just FINISHED typing up my TRAVELOGUES for the last ten years. I would now like to be able to download maps of VARIOUS countries as JPEG FILES. Ideally I would also like to be able to show my routes (e.g. Paris to Nantes to Poitiers) with a line on the map.

I have posted this question on the Google Maps forum as well as Travelpod but have not had a reply yet.Well, Google Earth (not Maps), I think, is what you're looking for.http://www.theaa.com/route-planner/index.jsp

go to the above site and you will GET all the route maps you need , harryThanks folks, I'll try both.
