Solve : organizing photographs?

Answer»

Computer: Dell ~ OS: xp ~ Word: 7 ~ photo software: Olympus Master 2
Massive job trying to organize photos. Had about 250-300. Was unable to figure out how to categorize into sub-groups and sub-sub-groups using photo software. Deleted most software as computer was about to die. Still no luck sorting PIX. Bought a USB-8G to store pix. Cannot get photos to go there. I tried to DELETE unwanted photos several times. They always CAME back, as dup. I have pix and icons are JUMBLED up together. in f:\ At least I know where they are. However, unable to delete ANY of the icons ( thousands), or separate them. I'd like to put all pix into one file and send them to USB (New Briefcase)....and organize them there. When tried, got mess. back saying, "verify disc is accessible... cannot do that, don't know how! Been unable to access my pix in Olympus M2 to organize there. Any ASSISTANCE appreciated. Also, a bunch of pix disappeared in Olympus M2. (i did not delete them, cannot find them) seems pix keep moving around, but now safe in f:\ thanks. ct Hope this is correct forum.

Solve : Comtex Turbo XT computer.?

Answer»

hey all.

Just picked up an ol' 1988 Comtex Turbo XT computer. I have no idea what the specs are but it has a hard drive, a 5.25 inch floppy and a 3.5 inch floppy, 150 watt PS and I think 64 MB Ram.

I want to set it up for old DOS games (they don't work well in 98 DOS 7.1 mode cause I have too much RAM). But I can't figure out how to hook it up to a monitor. I have an old monitor from 1990 which I thought would work but it has the new kind of plug that works with all newer PC's. I also tried hooking it to a TV but that didn't seem to work. Could you guys give me advice on how to & what to hook it up to? I attached a picture of my monitor plug and the back panel of the pc.

Thanks

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]I think it has an Intel 286 but it could have a 386.

So does anyone know anything about these old computers and monitors?the only thing that could be a monitor plug is the one on the far right, on the bottom. 9-Pin Hercules/MDA plug, or maybe EGA. If It only has 8-Bit ISA slots, it is neither a 286 or a 386 but a 8086, which I want to say merely because it's an XT computer. XT's had 8086 processors- PCs with 286's were ATs.

OTOH, there are "UPGRADE" things that allow you to force a 286 onto a XT. Can't remember if that was a card, or what.

I can guarantee it cannot even HOLD 64MB of RAM, it probably has 640K. If it is indeed an XT then it can only have 640K anyway.

If you can get a picture of the inside I might be able to tell you more

Also, looking closer, if I had to guess, I would say the VIDEO card (I can almost assure you it's the card on the right) is an ATI EGA Wonder, since it has dip switches. IIRC that was a 8-bit ISA card. Either way the labelling is wrong, stuff probably got messed about since it was originally put together.

again... if you can snap a pic of the inside I'll be able to tell you more.Quote from: BC_Programmer on October 12, 2009, 04:51:03 PM

This by the way did not make much sense to me. I don't see how one could force a 286 (processor) onto a XT. Unless you meant forcing a 286 OS onto it.

Okay, thanks so much, I am not at all really familiar with computing in the 80's.
I have no clue what things like an "ISA slot" or a "MDA plug" is.

I've attached a bunch of shot of different parts of this PC so you can tell me a bit more. Hope this help.

Well it says EPG right under the dip switches.Coool...

regarding the 286 upgrade, I'm not sure exactly how it worked, but it was in later XT models... it was some kind of card, that had a 286 processor, and you installed the driver and you could run 16-bit programs that otherwise would need a 286. Not sure exactly how it worked or how well.

An ISA slot was the slot used before PCI (obviously ) and was found on the first IBM PC as well. it came in 8-bit and 16-bit varieties, the 16-bit being first found on 286/AT class PCs.

the 9-pin connector on the video card is either MDA, MGA, or CGA, which were different display technologies predating the VGA 15-pin plug. (I think EGA used 15-pin, but I'm not sure... checking... I was wrong- EGA also uses a 9-pin connector- if I had to guess, I would say that was what it was- something like the ATI EGA Wonder of the time, which had connectors like those funky video in/out on that card.) MDA could only display text, and the monitors were often either black and white, or sometimes even lime green or amber. MGA had a graphics mode on top of the ability to display simply text characters, mostly thanks to more video memory for addressing each pixel (80x25x2 bytes (1 byte for the char, another for attributes) characters only take about 4K of Video RAM, whereas addressing each pixel of the 720×348 would require one bit- therefore around 30K of Video RAM.)

Picture one: definitely the video card. I believe the 9-pin output is either MDA,MGA, or CGA. (it could also be EGA...) you won't find those monitors around anymore, so if you don't have one you'll need to find a 8-bit VGA card on ebay, or something... (or a monitor, if you're feeling bold, but those might be costly for shipping).

as for the second card, this is the Controller card. I can't really tell, if it's IDE in this picture, I can only count 34 wires (confirmed by the other pic that has 34 pins) on the larger ribbon. the floppy cable is there though. This overview tells us that there are no 16-bit ISA slots, which posess two connector tabs. This means, as I originally suspected, that the PC is not AT class at all, and posesses a 8088 or 8086 processor. (probably the newer 8086, given it is labelled as an "XT"). as a history lesson, it wasn't until about the 486 that we got integrated motherboard hard drive and floppy drive controllers, Com ports, or the like; prior to that one needed a Controller card for their Drives, a I/O card for parallel and COM ports (which is what your card installed closest to your PSU is. (notice the connector at the front bottom of the card being one of the serial ports)

The hard drive is ESDI- ESDI has a 34-pin interface, I believe.

Moving to the motherboard- I notice, in the lower left, that not all the memory DIPP's are occupied. I'm not sure how much there would be there, I only see 11 slots, 3 of which are occupied. However, I will further guess that since the total possible RAM in a XT is 1024KB, that there are actually 16 slots, which hold 64KB each. This means, that there are 5 slots not shown, possibly under the ribbon cable; Don't know if these are occupied or not. This means that if they are empty, you have 3*64KB, or 192KB; or 7*64KB=448KB.

Not sure, how well it'll work for your intended purpose- I doubt there are many games at all that will run with this machine, since even something like commander keen NEEDS a 386 :/

Definitely something to learn from though

So is this like a clone of the "IBM XT"?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_PC_XTQuote from: BCP
(probably the newer 8086, given it is labelled as an "XT").

XTs had 8088 cpus - I had an Epson Equity+. The "Turbo" indicates it can run at either original 4.7 MHz or some higher speed 8 or 10 MHz usually selectable via a switch accessible externally.

286 upgrade cards fitted in an ISA slot and had a ribbon cable ending in a connector that fitted in the old 8088's socket. They were not always very reliable.

Before the ZIF socket for CPUs, removing a processor was a tricky affair, often resulting in a few BENT pins on the CPU.

I remember doing 2 CPU upgrades where the old CPU was pulled out and the new processor, and some supporting chips, was on a daughter board that plugged into the old CPU socket. One worked fine and the other crashed a lot.

Solve : A fond farewell?

Answer»

Hello CH, it's been ages since I've talked to you guys, I know. I wonder how many people still recognize me?

Well, I have to come to terms with a simple fact: The life of a college student is a full-time job, and I'm not going to have any real spare time in the foreseeable future. So I think it would be easier for me to stop pretending that I'm going to have enough spare time to dedicate to CH. When my email failed and Nathan had to remove my Mod privileges to keep his email from flooding, well, I figured now was as good a time as any to say what has to be said, imo:

Farewell, CH. It's been a good run, and I've loved growing up with this forum.

I won't forget you guys, since I love this forum so much. It was a huge part of my growing up to participate in helping as many people as I could with computer issues, a task that still goes on in real life for me to this day. We've had our ups and downs, and I posted a huge load of FAQs to help the site as best as I could (though looking back, some could use a revision, especially the ones I wrote when I was 13-14 )

However, I don't want to go out with just a quiet word, a fond farewell, whatever. If you knew me, you know that's not how I roll. I tend to go with a bang, make a huge spectacle. So I'll do the best that I can. The best thing I can think to do is present you guys with ONE last problem from me, what will be a doozie of a problem that has baffled everyone who I've tried to explain this problem to, and I can't even begin to diagnose this problem myself. Not sure if this is a hardware, software or OS issue, so it's in Other. (Ok, I hope this one's hard because if not I'll look like a complete moron )

Okay, this all began after my computer died and I had to purchase a cheap machine to tide me over. It was a Compaq Presario with the following vital stats:

2.2 GHz Single Core CPU
160 GB hdd space
2 GB DDR2 RAM
nVidia GeForce 8500 GT <--I put that in, not onboard video
Windows Vista Home Basic

I later added a 500 GB Internal hdd, then a 1TB external.

When the life of my machine began to wear down, I started having an issue where the computer would almost shut down. The OS would close, the monitor would fade to power save... but the fans would still be running, indicating that power had not been cut and the machine was still technically on. The only way I could fully turn off the machine was to hard shut it off. Sometimes it would not even make it that far and freeze on the "Shutting Down..." screen. Again, hard power off or reset was my only option.

Naturally, I've run Scandisk on several occasions to check my boot sectors and make sure I'm not TRASHING them. Scandisk is coming up empty for errors, but it's still annoying that the PC only shuts down correctly about 5% of the time.

Here's where it gets weird. I've recently upgraded almost all the major components, to the point where I don't have a Compaq Presario but a custom built machine with a few Compaq parts. I have replaced the following:

Power Supply
Motherboard
Connector cables (hard drive to mobo, power cable, etc)
OS

The only things that are from the old machine are the DVD-ROM, the hdd itself (formatted and now has Vista Home Premium OEM), the RAM, and I'm using the same video card (PCI-E) that I was using before. I'm barely using C: beyond the OS; almost all my software is installed to the 500 GB Internal.

Imagine my chagrin when I noticed that I am still having problems of the same nature, even with a 90% new build. Naturally, this narrows my problem down to one of these parts, but I'm at a loss as to which component I should be checking. Scandisk is still coming up empty for hard drive integrity problems, so at the very least I know I'm not trashing my boot record with these hard power-offs (though it still makes me understandably uncomfortable). I'm not sure if a problem with the RAM could be causing this, though I can't rule it out. I am definitely willing to rule out the DVD-ROM, since it has nothing to do with the SHUTDOWN sequence.

Looking forward to any help I can get on this issue... if there's anymore info you need, of course, feel free to ask. Cheers and take care.

-Timothy Bennett

P.S. An interesting side effect: When I have to hard shut down, the Num Lock on my PS/2 keyboard remains on and I can't shut it off. Probably not related to the problem but an interesting tidbit.

P.P.S I should note that I'm not having any other major issues with my computer at this time (Vista compatibility nightmares notwithstanding)WHAT?! NOOOOOOOOO...!

I haven't had much experience, but I know you had quite a big effect here. You will be missed dearly. Quote from: Helpmeh on October 27, 2009, 04:20:30 PM

you didn't help with the problem!

Sounds to me, like perhaps an issue with the Video card; Only reason I say that is every time I've had a power management issue it has always ended up being the video card or it's driver.

Also: Make sure your actually shutting down and not suspending. (although I suppose that should be obvious.), since Vista doesn't Shut down when you click Shut down by default.

Also your "Boot Record" Which I assume you mean Boot Sector () is not accessed during power down. Neither is the MBR. The only possible data loss from a power off while the PC is on is with files that are currently open, or, more precisely, files that are open and have changed contents that have not been flushed, or even worse, have only been partially flushed. But since the PC is practically at the end of the shut-down I doubt there's any danger from that.

Only way to rule out RAM would be by swapping it out; RAM is one of the components that can cause this; you could even try REMOVING some of the RAM, if you have multiple sticks, and see if the problem is eliminated using either stick of RAM.Same thing with safe mode?Hello again,

Well, BC, I have to admit I did not expect the video card to be the issue. Since I don't have a lot of financial resources available at the moment, I can't buy new memory or try another video card at the moment. I do have 2 sticks of memory (1 GB each), though I'm not sure if I can run Vista with only one of them in place. For now, I suppose the only way I can test in that area is to wait for new drivers for my video card. (In fact, now that you mention it, I remember that I didn't have this problem from the day I bought that video card; it could very well be the drivers.) I will attempt to boot with just one and then the other RAM stick over the next couple of days, when I have the time to sit down and work on it... my schedule for this week is fairly busy so it may be a little bit before I can get back to you guys on the RAM test.

Also, I have changed settings so that the Shut Down button on the Start Menu actually does Shut Down. It's one of the first changes I make on a new Vista Install, not sure whose bright idea it was to make Sleep the default command. (Or was it Hibernate? Either way, only a useful tool on a laptop IMO.)

Thank you for putting my mind at ease about the Boot Sector (yes, I used the wrong term... but you knew what I meant ). I'll admit a lack of expertise concerning the MBR & Boot Sector, since most of my knowledge comes from breaking things and learning how I broke it and how I can fix it. Naturally, I don't get a lot of practice with the MBR. (I do know that Linux on a dual-boot does not like to be uninstalled; in my EARLIER teen years I tried a dual boot twice... both times I tried to remove Linux for lack of real desire to use it, it trashed the MBR )

I'll also try booting in Safe Mode, per JJ 3000's suggestion; in fact I'll probably do that first as it requires the least amount of physical effort on my part (I can't name a single time that I opened my computer box and didn't come out with a cut or other minor injury )

Cheers,

TimMy first thoughts were that the RAM may be bad, but also didn't think that the video card could be the problem.

You mentioned that you replaced the mobo, but did you also replace the CPU or is it the original CPU?
I'm sorry, forgot to mention I also replaced the CPU; it is a 2.9 GHz Dual Core. (Also, the new CPU is Intel, while the old one was AMD.)

EDIT: Ah, it seems on the 5th, new drivers for the video card have been released. I am going to try it out now and see if that fixes the problem.Minor update, I actually feel guilty bumping this as it's not much.

I've updated the drivers for my video card and it hasn't fixed my problem. I would start RAM testing soon, but unfortunately my 3 1/2 year old glasses finally gave out today, and with vision surpassing 20/180 (astigmatism) I don't trust myself to tinker with parts, even though I'm quite familiar with them. My appointment to get another vision test and a new pair of glasses is later today; I'll need about a week, I presume, before I'll be able to see a dang thing I do. I promise I'll get to troubleshooting my memory as soon as I can.

Until then,

TimothyHey guys, sorry I haven't reported in, but I wanted to tell you guys I figured out the problem, completely by accident.

You see, for a while, I had a problem where a MMO that I play began to have a memory leak following a large patch. In an attempt to combat the problem, I opened up more virtual memory on all my hard drives - including the 1 TB external USB hard drive.

However, the other day, I decided it was getting cold enough I should start running my wall-heater. This was a bit problematic because my desk was blocking the heat vent. However, I was also chatting with a friend on skype and didn't want to close it all down. I figured I could move my desk (on wheels) without shutting down my computer, because I wasn't moving my desk far enough to require that I unplug the computer.

While I was in the process of moving my desk, the USB connection to the computer became unplugged. I had a BSOD and the computer shut down. I didn't bother reconnecting the drive because I was busy. Since that point, I have had no problems with my computer, shutting down or starting up.

From there, the solution to the problem was pretty easy to figure out. I was having problems shutting down 80% of the time because the external drive wasn't able to clear its used memory fast enough, therefore it couldn't shut down (or something like that). The other 20% I can infer was times that the external hard drive wasn't in use.

So, lesson learned: Do not allocate virtual memory to a USB hard drive. Quote from: Dilbert on November 27, 2009, 01:29:36 PM
So, lesson learned: Do not allocate virtual memory to a USB hard drive.
So, you were using the ReadyBoost feature in Vista, right?Readyboost is not virtual memory - it's a cache.

Dilbert - aside from anything else, moving or jostling a computer while on is dangerous for the HD. If the head jumps around - well, you can guess. You always want the head parked before moving the system. I recognize this isn't the problem you ran into - but still............

Solve : FTP Problems?

Answer»

Happy Thanksgiving everyone and Go Gators!

I am trying to post a "Portfolio" WEB page to my college's FTP server. Locally, everything works great. I reviewed some coding this morning and believed I had FIXED everything. My PDF files work great, and a graphics web page that has a *.jpg FILE extension works great. I have one web site - change management - that I created during my first semester, which also works great. However, I have 3 web pages that prompt me to overwrite a target directory n\n\n being the newest directory, and a smaller file size. The source directory is n/n/n written on its original date with a larger file size. I tell it to overwrite, and the web pages "go haywire." Can someone please help me with my final project for this class with regards to FTP hints? THANKS!!!!!!Are you using an FTP client?I am using Filezilla.Righty.

So, you want to upload a newer VERSION of a particular file. When you do, it asks you if you want to overwrite the old file?Yes but the older file is the one I want to keep cause it's the one that's working.Does it not give you the option to keep the original?

Instead, maybe try EFTP.My options are skip or overwrite. I'll check out EFTP. Thanks for your help.

What is the name of a programme that helps forums moderators DETECT posts?

Why I ask - is that someone posted a link in a gaming forum I use in my post ... that I did not do. No one has my password or I would of LOST high level account as well.

They only posted a link which is a forum "No no" ... They did not sabotage any pics or other content. As such I have been given a warning. I suspect ... it was a mod that posted it ... as they have access to change, edit etc ....

I contacted the head mod and asked them to check. Is there anyway ... mods can see who posted and what changes have been made and by whom? Can they see if someone else posted/changed my post?

Anyone know the programme or name that can check this ...Forum personnel can see the ip address of posters. Beyond that there is no special software other than what is built in to the forum software itself. The WHOIS can help localize ip addresses.Quote

Nope! Nor does phpBB or MyBB.If it was edited by a moderator then at the bottom it should say 'edited by ?'Cheers ... I was hoping the higher up mods could see any history of mods that may have changed the content of my posts.

Silly I know. But it's a gaming forum ... I just happen to have one of the best presented clans on the forums. Still believe I GOT sabotaged by a "Moderator" whom are all other clan leaders.

@evilfantasy
Yep I see that ... but I didn't see who posted the link before hand. I signed in and I got a message saying I got a warning. So I didn't see who edited before that.

I see the current edit and the mods name ... But I did not see who edited my site before that. Post was changed by 2 mods. I only see the recent post made by the mod.

That's defeatable in forum software options.@evilfantasy

The thing is> I BACK up everything I do. I reposted all to the head gaming mod. I copy and past everything I do and save to a word document under "Clan Backup Forum".

I copy and pasted link in chat window ... went to preview ... and found that I had no links at all directed to our clanchat forum. None.

Over a year as a clan leader ... and I can assure you I am very careful when it comes to links. I know it's a mod ... one that I have had issues with in the past before they became a mod.Not much we can do here except speculate. True .... thanks all for helping. I suspect I am about to get another warning anyway, so my clan is banned.

You have to question the logic as to why a moderator would want other clan leaders to help moderate a forum ... knowing THERES alot of clan sabotage going around. Thanks all for your help.

Will it matter if I use a regular cd or do I need to use a dvd DISK? Can I burn 2 so I can keep them seperate & safe? The little pamplet Dell supplied was for Vista instead of 7 so I'm hoping the startup INSTRUCTIONS on the computer will be clear. I would appreciate any tips on what I should or should not do in the initial start up. I'm sure WINDOWS 7 is a long way from the Windows 98 I'm used to.

Dell Inspiron i546
AMD Athlon ll X2 Processor 215
4 gig Mem
640 gig HD
Win 7 64 bitI would use a DVD...that way it will fit on 1...

The instructions are basically the same for both OS's...

If you contact Dell however they will ship you the DVD's for a nominal shipping cost...

Solve : Problem with downloading??

i downloaded a file and it worked fine i then accidently pressed "open with" then "word" and now i cant set it back so it opens up as it's own programme again and anything else i download will also open with "word". My question is:
How do i set it so any file i download to open as its own file and not try and open with "word"?Just download the file again. What browser?i have iv tried downloadin the file 100's of times and it happens with every file i download and it happen with every browser.I have tried: Aol, internet explorer and google chromeYou may need to reset the file extension association? It sounds as if you have managed to have Word open any and all file types.

Go to: Control Panel \ FOLDER Options \ File Types tab

When you highlight a file type, a description is given and you can then change the PROGRAM you want to open that file. After you have made all the necessary changes, click APPLY \ OK.

HTH!

Rosiei don't have a files tab in there
i am using windows vista if that changes anythingRight-click on the file, choose OPEN WITH, browse to what you want it to open with and make sure there's a tick in "always USE the SELECTED program......."Sorry, Josh...didn't realize Vista had dropped the File Types tab from Folder Options. Allan's method will work great for you. You say it is happening with every download? Maybe the information at http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article02-500 will be of further help.

Solve : beeping computer?

Answer»

My mother -in-law gave my kids a computer. Everytime I connect it starts to beep (over and over). What would cause this?A stuck key on the keyboard?

It depends on when it starts to beep, how many BEEPS, and what the system does. You need to provide a LOT more information.okay. so it is a V2 premier computer. When it is starting up it doesn't even get to a WELCOME screen. It just starts this long beep and then another and then another, ect.
Then I unplug it!Things we need to find out:

- your BIOS version

How to find out:

- When your computer starts up, immediately keep pressing the 'del' (delete) key several times.
A screen with options should appear. On top of this screen it should say something like "Phoenix BIOS"

Why:

- The beep codes depend on your BIOS.

Nice, I've just found an excellent guide on this website:
Beep codes

Here's another useful page on AWARD beep codes:
BIOS-central

Is it a laptop or a desktop?

Edit:
According to your manufacturer the BIOS you have is AWARD.
As you described: "one long, then another, then another".
This would match the "1 long, 2 short" of AWARD on that beep codes page.
Quote

Indicates a video error has occurred and the BIOS cannot INITIALIZE the video screen to display any additional information

However, you said "etc.", so I don't know if it was 1 long, 2+ short. lol

Solve : Software Engineering Education?

Answer»

Hi,

I will be commencing an EDUCATION next summer. I am interested in IT, computers and technology and because of that I've been considering studying to become a Software Engineer, because of good job opportunities and a high salary. I have the studied the required subjects (Math A level, Physics B level and Chemistry C level) to be eligible for the education. But I felt I was struggling with math in school, so I'm worried about the role of Math for the Software ENGINEERING education since A level is needed. The university I'm considering to go to requires (Scandinavian grade system) an average of at least 8 to be eligible for the education (I have 9,2, which is considerably higher), OR an average of 7 in each of the subjects: Math, physics and chemistry. I pass that too (Average of 8 in math). BUT, since the education requires Math A level and I already felt I was struggling in school in Math, I am worried if the math is too difficult. I wouldn't want to start an education and be unable to finish it.

Are there any Software Engineers/People studying Software Engineering on this site, that can share some of their experiences with math in Software Engineering? I've always got fairly good grades in school, so should I be worried?

I tried e-mailing a student at the university that I wish to attend (the university listed his e-mail in case people wanted to ask questions), but the e-mail was no LONGER in use. That's why I'm asking here now, in case you wonder why.

Thanks in advance for responses, I'll be checking back whenever I can. What are the math requirements which the university you plan to attend has for the Software Engineer curriculum?I would try to contact the professors and discuss it with them. The university requires an average of at least 7 in Math A level, I have an average of 8.
I'd just really like to hear from someone, who has studied Software Engineering.Quote from: mroilfield on February 11, 2010, 11:23:30 PM

I would try to contact the professors and discuss it with them.

Who better to ask about it then the professorsI do Software Engineering and they don't require much math at all (I'm not saying that that's your case). My average in math is like 4.5-5.
My physics score is pretty much non-existing and chemistry very bad also.
Well, I'm lucky I don't live in a country where they are facist about grades.

All I need and needed for my programming is some basic algebra, statistics and graph theory.. for the rest.. rofl.
We don't even have to learn integrals.
I'm sorry to hear that they base themselves on grades to allow someone to enter.
Here they just let you in, even if you have bad grades (I take the example from a former FRIEND of mine who went to take cryptology (really hard math) and his highschool end grades were horrible (5/10).

So let's see.. programming.. math wise.. well, first year you have to usually make a calculator, some sort of tax system, .. I don't really see much math in there. Maybe if you are better at math than me you can see the difference between an efficient sorting algorithm and a bad one (I know I can't).
It's not been hard for me up to now. Heck, I'm in my third year and I haven't had any problems (well, maybe in the first year but anyway).

I'll give you one MINDSET to go with: nothing is impossible. "I can't" is nonsense. There are no limits. You can do the hardest math and subjects. Just go for it.

Good luck out there in the college world!

I'm asking this because I've written a lot of answers and did a lot of posts on people's threads but I received maybe 1% or 0% updates on them.Once you visit the topic, it will be marked as 'read' and will not show up in 'New replies to your post' until another user posts again.

Solve : Laptop constantly connected to internet??

Answer»

Is it a good idea to keep laptop constantly connected to the internet (Yahoo mail for instance). Is it a better idea to turn off the computer and/or put it to sleep overnight or when not in use during the day? It's strictly a matter of personal choice. There are two schools of thought regarding whether or not to leave computers on constantly. On the one hand, the biggest "shock" to the electronic components in the computer is when it is powered on. On the other hand, leaving the computer on constantly may cause the hd's life to be shortened. If you do decide to leave it on all the TIME, just set the hd and display to power down after a defined PERIOD of inactivity. It will still retrieve your email, but the lcd will remain off and the hd will only spin if and when needed. Personally, I turn my systems off at night and have always done so.

Of course, either way you should have a GOOD anti virus utility resident at all times - especially when your system is online.I've read SEVERAL articles and studies on this subject and frankly none of the have really convinced me that one way or the other is right.

One of the BEST documented studies on power useage and energy costs I've read was done on incandescent and florescent light bulbs and there are proably some similarity to computer useage. If an incandescent light was repeatedly turned on and off, it shortened the life of the bulb by a wide margin because of the shock of the initial electrical pulse.

If I remember right the crossover point was 4 hours for an incandescent bulb and 8 hours for a florescent bulb for the savings in energy to offset the wear and tear and the cost of the bulb.

Personally, I leave my computer on 24/7 for my convenience.

Solve : IP Address Problem...Please Help?

Answer»

I am supposed to as a Comcast patron constantly be getting a new IP, for my safety and protection.
However I have been stuck with the same ip address for awhile.
I called up Comcast last night to get them to change it.

I.
A. They had me turn off the computer, unplug the modem from the power source, and unplug the ethernet.
B. Then to re-hook up the ethernet, re-power the moden, and turn on the computer.
Problem was twofold:
-My IP address according whatismyip.com and other websites was still the same (24.62.84.252). I also checked on my computer (start>control panel>network connections>right click LAN>status>support) and got the same address.
-Second, Comcast had a different IP address associated with my computer.

So then they had me
C. start>run
D. Type ipconfig /release
E. Type ipconfig /renew

Same Problem

II
So they told me to go and get a new modem. I went and got a new one.
A. The told me to keep my old modem...and instead use the splitter to have the phone line go into 1 modem, the ethernet into the new modem, and I should have a new IP.
B. I installed, and the same problem.
C. When I check my IP address on whatismyip.com
or
on my computer (start>control panel>network connections>right click LAN>status>support)
I get the same address.

III
So I called them again..
A. once more they walked me through a power cycle of shutting down the computer, the modem, and unhooking the ethernet.
Then re-hooking the ethernet, re-power the modem, and turning the computer on.
Same problem as before.
-My IP address still read the same (24.62.84.252)
-It did not match what comcast has listed as mine

B. Once again he had me go to
- start>run
-Type ipconfig /release
-Type ipconfig /renew

Same thing as before.

Finally I got on with the supervisor who told me that Comcast has as my ip address for the old modem (73.156.141.230) and for the new modem I just got (73.159.63.155).
I asked them why is it when I check both on my computer AND on internet sites I am read the 24.62.84.254 in spite of everything.
Again I was told Comcast shows your IP has been reset and is new. Ignore what the computer says OR call up your computer manufacturer (Dell) and tell them your system needs to updated to show new IP address.
That or somehow my computer is PICKING up a static IP address (which makes no sense because if you TRACE the 24.62.84.254....that address is FROM Comcast of New Bedford/Franklin, MA....even though I live 100 miles away out of state).

I don't know if this is Comcast incompetence or my stupid computer.
My questions

1) What IP address do you show me as having when I post this now?
2) If it is the 24.....address why is it this when Comcast gave me a 2nd modem and has powered it on and down, and released/renewed the address?
3) What's going on and what can I do to get a different freaking IP address. Pisses me off when they say I am supposed to get a new all the time yet it always shows me stuck with this old one!First off, none of the people that Comcast ate giving you the correct information. Neither you, your computer nor your modem can force a change your address on the Internet. From your modem to the server used by Comcast is a point-to-point protocol and the modem has no control of the address that is going to be used out on the actual Internet. Anyway, here are two links that will show you how you are known on the Internet. And you can find others, which I'm sure you have done.
Just for reference, you might check with some friends of yours that also have Internet service with Comcast and see if they ever get different IP ADDRESSES out on the network.

http://www.whatismyip.com/
http://network-tools.com/I believe you will need to get a router to change your mac address or leave your modem off for about 4 days to get a new ip address assigned.I already have checked both those websites, no new IP address.

So what is the deal...is Comcast full of it?
Why did they tell me to get a new modem, to turn on and off the computer, type ipconfig, and then claim I have a new IP address?

They say my IP has been reset and should change frequently, it never does.
They say the IP I get does not match what they have me listed.
Then they say the problem is my PC.

Why are they so stupid?
What do I need to do to get my IP address changed?

Call the ISP for a new IP or spoof your MAC-address.Quote from: bluecountry on February 14, 2010, 01:01:40 PM

Yes, they are full of it.
Anyway, changing your IP is not the sure way of getting protection.
How much security do you want?
Changing the IP address once a day is not really very high security.
It would be more cos-effective to get another Service Provider rather that purchase or rent a premium security service.

But, it that is what your really want, ask for 'T1 Business Internet' service.
The phone company may have to run a new CABLE to you place of business. Expect to pay $250 a month. But you can have a very secure network.

Otherwise, just put up with Comcast.Quote from: Treval on February 14, 2010, 02:40:19 PM

Because a MAC address is a unique address, a computer network will not have the same MAC address assigned to more than one computer or network device.
Urban legend. Change MAC, Change IP.
They do not have to give you a new IP address. Spoofing the MAC would be the same, in effect, as getting a new cable modem.

You can sin up for a CHEAP dial-up service and they will assign you a IP for the duration of the session. But dial-up is so slow.

Or you can get fast internet from your Cell phone provider. Maybe. Or you can get DSL from your phone company.

Another way is to get a VPN to a proxy server. With a VPN they can not s'see' you on the internet. The proxy will asing a IP for the proxy service.
It can be pricy. But if for personal use and moderate traffic, it might be what your want.
Personal VPN and Proxy ServiceA
About $8 to $14 per month.

Basically, I'm looking at being able to play games at max settings, at the resolution of 1600x900, but I don't really have a problem dropping the resolution down to keep it playable.
Thanks for the help!Things that you should look for in a Graphics card:

  • Dedicated Memory amount
  • Max Resolution
  • Compatible video connection(Does it support VGA, DVI, S-Vid, etc.)
  • Power usage

First off what is the connection for your monitor?
What games are you playing to play(You could provide the one with the highest requirements)?
Are you going to put it in a PCI, PCI-E slot?I'm gonna be playing on a 20" LCD at 1600X900 using DVI. It will be connected in a PCI-E slot. I kind of just draw a blank when it comes to graphics cards, so I don't really know what to look for, but I will be looking at what you have said to look at.

Thank you

Forgot to add what the highest requirement game might be. I'm guessing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 or Left 4 Dead 2. I'm just looking for something that can play those games on high at possibly 1600x900, and something that will last a little while with newer games.Alright Modern Warfare 2 seems to have higher specs than L4D(Source: http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/60971)

It requires a graphics card with 256MB of Deticated Graphics Memory.
And it must be a NVIDIA Geforce 6600GT(or newer) or a ATI Radeon 1600XT(or newer)

Since you want to play it at high specs you probably want a newer model than the ones required.

You also need to figure in your power usage, the power supply calculator may help:
http://www.schrockinnovations.com/powercalc.phpOK, I think I GOT it figured out. My total wattage use for my rig (even though it doesn't have the processor I have) was 305. That's including the PCI-E Video Card, but, to be honest, I don't think this really helps me when getting one, but then again, it might. I've been looking at cards on Newegg, and a lot of them say to have a 6-pin 75 watt connecter, but with a recommended PSU of being like 400, 450+. So, would that mean that I wouldn't really need a 400+ watt PSU as long as I have a 75 watt 6-pin CONNECTOR? I found what seems to be a good ATI based card for a reasonable price that is in my range, but are asking for 400+ watt PSU's with a 75 watt 6-pin connector.

Thanks for the help again.Ok I did the math and your current GFX card uses about 20 Watts.

Which gives you about 70 watts to work with(I put in a safety margin of 10 Watts from the max wattage of your PSU)

As far as the connectors you shouldn't have a problem.

Modern Warfare 2(on recommended requirements) requires a Geforce 7800 series or better(Which has 512MB of memory)

Summary
Use these figures as benchmarks:

Power Usage: 70 Watts or less
Memory: 512MB or more
Max Resoulution: What you want
Connector: DVI
Slot: PCI-E

Here's what I found on Newegg that may work for you:

Solve : Buffering??

Answer»

What is "BUFFERING"?
In general terms, a buffer is hardware meant to hold a certain AMOUNT of data in a temporary memory for use by the system...most commonly, during VIDEO or music downloads, "extra" data will download during the "buffering" phase so that the data (video, music, ETC.) can be smoothly displayed to the user while the system continues to download more data.

Solve : IBM Thinkpad T40 2373 keyboard layout?

Answer»

I bought a refurbished IBM Thinkpad T40 2373, but did not get a manual with it. Can someone tell me what all the blue function keys do? I can't see the symbols clearly, and probably wouldn't know what they mean, if I could. Also, how do you wake it up from sleep mode? I just PUSH buttons till it wakes up, or else manually turn it off and restart it. It would be good to have a complete manual, if anyone knows where I could get one. Manual: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?subcategoryind=0&familyind=117057&brandind=10&doccategoryind=0&modelind=0&doctypeind=8&validate=true&partnumberind=0&sitestyle=lenovo&template=%2Fproductpage%2Flandingpages%2FproductPageLandingPage.vm&operatingsystemind=49979&machineind=0I clicked on your link, then on Online USER's Guide - ThinkPad General, which took me to a page saying A User's Guide is not included with newer ThinkPad systems, therefore it is also not available in PDF or hardcopy format.

ThinkPad systems are preloaded with the Access Help APPLICATION which contains information similar to that which would be included in a User's Guide.

You can access this application by pressing the appropriate button on the top left of your keyboard.

I have the 'Access IBM' button indicated, but nothing happens when I press it. There is also a link to download the 'ThinkVantage Productivity Center', but the supported systems listed does not include the T40. Do you have any other suggestions or help?I GOT it here: http://safemanuals.com/annexe_Install%20Guide_IBM_THINKPAD%20T40-_E.htm

Solve : Control Panel missing componants?

Answer»

Ok, so I noticed that for a while I haven't been here my microsoft sounds when I BOOT up and shut down my machine. At first I thought that I didn't have the sound files but that wasn't it.

I went into control panel, sound and audio devices and click on the sound TAB. Under the program events list, I notice that many of the program events were missing such as windows start up and windows shut down. This is why I wasn't hearing any sounds when I would shut down and start my computer.

My question is, how do you get those items back on the program event list?

I use windows XP home edition computer.

Any help or suggestions? Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hold CTRL, and SHIFT, HIT Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy (with Vista, most likely, you won't need it).
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD (rarely in Vista case).
I did this already and the program events are still missing.

Eh, I shouldn't care but it just annoys me LOL

My PC is 6 years old so I probably deleted something that I wasn't supposed to.I propose repair then: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/How-to-repair-Windows-XP-t138.htmlIn XP the sounds are in
C:\WINDOWS\Media

You may be abler to 'borrow' some sounds from vista.
Read this:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/Vista-Sound-Scheme.shtmlNo, no, I have the sounds they do WORK when I click on them in the media folder. What is missing is the items in the program list to which the sounds are assigned.

For example, if I wanted to assign a specific sound to Windows Start, I couldn't do so becuase Windows Start is not listed in the program event list. I do have the windows start sound but no even to attach it to.

Solve : Installing new DVD-rom into older 486 running DOS 6.22?

Answer»

Hello!

I am looking to put an internal IDE CD-ROM drive into an older 486 system that uses DOS 6.22 for its operating system. As I can't seem to find just a CD-ROM drive, all I SEE are DVD-ROM drives...which I assume will handle the CD's just fine. My question is...will today's drives work in an older computer? Are there still DOS drivers out there to allow something like your Model #iHDP118-08 to operate correctly as an optical drive in DOS 6.22?

This older PC is connected to a system that requires it to run a proprietary program to run the system...and currently the user loads jobs into the system via the 3'5" floppy drive - but as our jobs are getting bigger than 1.44mb, there is a need to install a CD-ROM to be able to bring over larger jobs to the PC.

Any help or insight to this would be greatly appreciated!

Solve : Youtube Troubles?

Okay BASICALLY I have a two gmail accounts and one youtube account.

The Youtube account is linked to Gmail A.

How, if possible, can I change it so the Youtube account is linked with Gmail B?

Otherwise, does anyone know a way I can separate the Youtube account from the Gmail account, or even have two different passwords for the gmail and youtube account?

Reason for this:
I've a Youtube account which I have to share with a group of people. HOWEVER, my gmail account is also linked to that youtube account. I don't want them to have access to my personal email. You can log into gmail with youtibe credentials? There should be some way to de-link the accounts. You can log into gmail with youtibe credentials? There should be some way to de-link the accounts.

That's what I'm trying to find out....I don't think it is possible to log into gmail VIA youtube accounts because it asks for a GOOGLE account, not google or linked youtube account. Carbon, you don't need to worry unless they can access you email with the credentials you gave them. The youtube-google link is actually just a google account shortcut to your youtube account (so you can log in easier). Or just create another uTube account under GMailB...Yes, it is possible to unlink Youtube and your Gmail Account. To do it...

1. first log into your youtube account.

2. go to your account (here is DIRECT link, provided you've logged in already ... http://www.youtube.com/account#manage/status)

3. click on arrow next to "Unlink youtube and google accounts"

You should see the following ....

7. Click the Unlink YouTube and Google Accounts link and then follow the directions GIVEN from there on (if any more are given)

I recently installed the latest version of Firefox, 3.6. It wasn't running quite as well as before but it was tolerable. Then I set up a Firefox add-on, recommended by PC World and things then WENT really downhill. Everything runs exceedingly SLUGGISH. It takes five or more times as LONG to view an email, and EVEN longer to send one!
I since got rid of the add-on, but things have not improved.
By the way, I do have a dial-up connection to the Internet but things have never been as BAD as this.
The situation is even worse considering that I have to use the Internet to search for a job.
Thanks for any advice.Uninstall 3.6 and install an earlier version (or reinstall 3.6 after first uninstalling it).

My Phillips CD player that I bought in 2000 accepts finalized CD-RWs. If I use Nero to create an AUDIO CD, the finalize option is set by default. While I was Googling for facts about unfinalized audio CDs, I came across a whole bunch of posts about a pastor who had GIVEN an "awesome sermon" (!) the previous Sunday; however the CD recorder being USED to capture it had a fault whereby it would not finalize discs...

Solve : how to run excel & word files using bat?

i want to KNOW how to run excel & word files using bat files

kindly do the needfulUse the start command with the filename.

let me confirm with you, you want to open excel/word files from a batch and then view/edit it visually and manually , am i right? If that's the case, you are better off double CLICKING your excel/word ICON on the desktop. BUT if you are going to automate reading the excel/word files and doing editing AUTOMATICALLY, then yes, a batch file plus some vbscript SCRIPTING is the way to go. After all, a batch file does just that, automate MUNDANE process and user doesn't have to do much. Just $0.02Quote from: ghostdog74 on December 10, 2009, 04:38:04 AM

Solve : Windows registry data types?

Answer»

I'm not sure I understand why different data types are used in the registry.
I've read about the basic difference between them, but don't understand why one would be used over another..

Here is an example I picked out of the wind..

Say you want to disable the Administrative Shares in Winodws Vista..

Open regedit and go here:

HKLM\system\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters

add a dword key with value set to 0 and name it "AutoShareWks" When you restart Windows the admin shares will not be shown........whatever

Why not add one of the other data types to accomplish this? Why does "dword" have to be used?Pretty decent explanation in fairly plain English: http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID=361I think I've read that same tutorial a while back... It gives an excellent basic description of the data types, but it doesn't say WHY each specific data type is applied, over another data type...

Here is a QUOTE from the tutorial:

"System policy settings, device drivers, and services use DWORD values the most."

Ok, so why to device drivers use dword data types and not reg_sz data types?

Going back to my own example....a dword data type was used to disable the Admin Shares. Why dword? There has to be a REASON that dword was used, and not another data type...

There are three primary data types, and there must be a reason that one would be used over another..

I don't understand your question. Or the value of the question.
They use a DWORD because it is a DWORD.
It is like asking why are laces in shores are shoelaces.
It's not that easy to explain registry and I'm by far not any registry guru, but to extremely simplify things, it all depends what you need to enter as registry key value (data).
If you want to enter a path, CLSID number, etc, you'll use string, or multi string.
If the value needs to be, say "yes", or "no" you'll use dword either decimal or hex.
Binary type is more complicated to explain.I understand binary math.. you can try to explain the binary data type if you want Oh good for you
Again simplifying....
Binary data is used for describing some more complicated events. You can compare it to writing HTML, or Java code for web pages.
Since you're good with binary math, this example should be easy for you: http://vittoriop77.blogspot.com/2005/01/vbscript-write-registry-binary-value.html
It's not for me though It looks like programming code... I don't understand a lick of programming, although I do understand binary math..http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms724884%28VS.85%29.aspx

To answer the question "Why" it's the same reason programming languages have different data types- for storing, you know, different types of data.

REG_SZ/RREG_EXPAND_SZ are used for storing Strings. one of the DWORD types are used for storing numbers.

a DWORD is 4 bytes. representing a DWORD as a string would take not only more then 4 bytes most of the time (anything over 999 would require more then 4 bytes) but also requires work to parse back into a DWORD in the program. This was a common issue with Windows INI files since they could only store strings; programs had to convert what they wanted to store into a string and be able to read those strings back. this caused issues when numbers were localized; say an INI file is written on a european install, which uses a comma for a decimal separator, and periods for thousands separators. reading that same value on another version of windows could yield a completely different result.
Of course you cannot really distribute a registry key as you could INI files, but the storage issue is still present, and as much as people like to claim otherwise the registry is a lot better organized then having thousands of INI files strewn all over the place. it's better to find the one or two keys that a program uses for it's settings then it is to try to trace the data file search path to try to discover which INI file is being loaded. (the one in C:\windows? the one in C:\windows\system32? the one in the application folder?)

Binary is stored for blobs of data. For example many programs store an entire blank file in the registry- in fact, that's one of the available options for the "New" shell key; most programs point it towards a file using a string, but it's also possible to simply embed the file structure right into the key. In that case the data type is also used to determine what to do with it; if you store a file path string as a Binary type it will not load the file but will simply use that data. (this is btw the shell keys for adding items to the New-> submenu on a folders right-click menu).

a Binary data value actually has nothing to do with binary arithmetic. It's just a blob of data without a type at all; the program will need to know the format and what's inside it and how to interpret it; does it contain a persisted data structure? Perhaps it is, like in the case of the "new" sub-menu item, simply what would be file contents stored in a registry key? Only the program that wrote the value and/or it's documentation really can say.Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 12, 2010, 09:20:54 PM

To answer the question "Why" it's the same reason programming languages have different data types- for storing, you know, different types of data.

So, the fact that Windows uses three primary data types is because Windows was written in a particular programming language?

What data types do other languages use?

btw...thanks for the help everyone Understanding the data yeps.
You can do a search on Google or Yahoo or some other search engine on the subject "Data Types " and find numerous references. Many of these will be overpowering.
Think of far personal computers as being tools or appliances that have to be assembled from parts. Because of size, cost, the efficiency and other factors the parts can be of different size. Of coarse, the parts that are used in side the computer are not visible to the human vision. But there is a relationship of cost and efficiency, even though the size of these items is not apparent to the human eye.
The early personal computers that were made in the 1970s were either four bit or 8-bit computers. There also was the possibility of a six bit, but let's not talk about that. In an eight bit computer a processor can quickly load eight bits of data all that wants. It is possible to do both arithmetic operations and logic operations on the bits in that one byte of memory.
Now to get to the point being made here. In these early computers there is no simple, easy and quick way to access one bit. Yes, you can access one bit, but at the same time you read seven other bits that you may not have been of interest. So if you wanted to change that one bit, you certainly could, but to write it back to memory unit have to write all it gets back to memory. The hardware did not really have a provision for just reading and writing one bit by itself without reading or writing the others.
Now it is true there are instructions or sequence of instructions that will allow you to test any bit in the eight bit memory location. Yet the hardware itself does not actually read just one bit, nor did it wrght one bit. In fact, it would take more effort to pick out just one bit by itself and perform operation on it than it would be to manipulate all eight bits at the same time. This was basically a hardware characteristic. The term BYTE came to be an expression or name used to identify the eight bits that would reside in a single memory location.
Now let's bring it up to modern date. The operating systems we use today are FUNDAMENTALLY 32-bit systems. In somewhat of an abstract sense they are designed for a computer that access is 32 bits at a time. Of course, our modern-day processors now Access 64-bitS.but the most popular system still in use are 32-bit systems. So the quick and efficient way of accessing data in memory is just to pull in 32 bits at a time OPERATE on it and write it back out. There is no great advantage to trying to pick out individual bits among the 32 that are available. Unless you can imagine some advantage.
Now as to the registry, it is a database manager. We would like our database manager to be fairly efficient in speed and also memory usage. It would seem that specifying a byte value instead of a double word would be a better use of memory if only a small number is needed. A byte can represent a value from zero up to 255. Or, if you choose, of value that could range from -128 up to positive 127. However, the hardware does not really work any better trying to pick out just one bite than it is picking up the entire word or double word or quadruple word as the case may be. The CPU instruction set, of course, has specific introductions for doing BIT test, set and reset. You could use those heavy, they actually take more time than it is to operate on the entire set of bits all at once.

My apologies for my lack of making something like this more interesting or easier to understand. If it was something visible and you could see, it wood be rather obvious. In the Windows operating system a design decision had been made some time ago to use the double word as the most common data type that would be used in the registry. This is not really a dependency on a specific programming language. It has to do with the underlying capabilities of the hardware. Remember, that MS DOS and Windows started out with a 16-bit computer that had an eight bit data path and some kind of strange 20 bit address path, the old 8088, later to be replaced by the 8086. With the advent of the 386, something which Microsoft and Intel did together, the idea of having a 32-bit processor instead of a 16-bit processor became a reality for desktop computers.
So basically, that is the best I can do to try to explain why they use double word, I am an old, old assembly language programmer and I used to work using an operating system that Intel had available long before DOS came on the scene. We did our work in assembly language and if we wanted speed we went access the memory on the byte level and not try to test individual bits. Of course, we could write a program to test individual bits. But as I said before, there is a speed disadvantage and you have to have actually more code in order to access just one bit.
To the moderator, edit or strike out any of the stuff you do not think is relevant. This is just the way I try to explain things to people that don't do this kind of low-level pedal to the metal work.Quote from: EEVIAC on February 12, 2010, 09:45:21 PM

lol I had a feeling that you would not like my interpretation... Some of your terminology I just don't understand and occasionally I'll attempt to confirm whether I understand by summing up what you're saying.. If my sum is off, then it means I obviously don't get it...

I did take another look at your explanation of binary data types and how each blob is specific to the program using it.. that helps I understand now why a binary type could not be used in place of a string...

@ geek

That was a quite insightful explanation... helps a lot

Solve : Found a HP 48GX calculator?

Answer»

in a box from a deceased friend.....looks like an enormous CALCULATOR, but what does this thing??? Type is 32k/128k only...LOL...is it an antique or can it be used for something usefull???Should still be a good calculator. If you haven't used a HP calculator before, numbers and calculations are entered slightly differently than on most CALCULATORS. HP uses a system called reverse Polish NOTATION to enter numbers. Once you get used to it, it's pretty easy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HP-48_seriesAccording to This you could land a Man on the Moon...BELIEVE it or not, some of the early HP calculators had more computing power than the Apollo missions to the moon had in the space modules.512K on the 1st mission that landed a man there...
PS....that's where the Humor above came from...

Solve : Free Calemdar for 2010, no spam?

Here is a site that will give you a free 2010Calendar with no CATCH, No money, No survey, No registration and some of the best general purpose calendars.
Here is one I like:
http://www.vertex42.com/calendars/pdfs/2010-monthly-calendar-blue-landscape.pdf
It looks like this. (Size reduced to fit here.)
I see it's a PDF file, so it's just a calendar to print on paper, right? Right! its ready to go.
You can both print it and save it to you drive.

Or you can go to the home page and pick out a different style.
No macros, No script, No java. Just straight simple PDF.
And it did not alarm the AVG software. No Active X, No Flash.

I used it last year and then forgot where I got it! The site address is so TINY that I almost missed it!

I really like it when something's really free and they don't get pushy.

Gee - free calendars. What a concept Quote from: Allan on January 19, 2010, 05:57:54 AM

next thing you know, they'll go an integrate calendars into operating systems and E-mail clients.

oh wait, they already did.Vertex42 makes some PRETTY impressive stuff. I use several of their calendar Excel spreadsheets for school.
Their 'apps' have been very helpful. Highly recommended.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on January 19, 2010, 07:57:42 AM

Thanks for mentioning that, Carbon. I just visited http://www.vertex42.com/ and I see they have a lot of useful apps. In fact, everything I saw there is more exciting than Geek-9pm's PDF calendar. Quote from: BillRichardson on February 08, 2010, 07:57:19 PM

Well, my goodness, what do we have here? Quote from: soybean on February 08, 2010, 10:05:44 PM
What do we have here?

The above calendar is the pdf calendar that Geek, the original posted referred to.

When the larger pdf calendar was posted, the smaller pdf calendar by Geek did not show.

Added value to the thread.Thinks Bill. It is better on PHOTO bucket. From now on I will remember to put anything valuable on photo-bucket instead of my own wimpy cheep server.

I'm using Google Calender's email reminders to remind me birthdays. It's working well. Windows Live Calendar also EMAILS notification of scheduled events, no spam and is printable.
