Solve : mouse problem.......help?

Answer»

Hi

Can anyone help?

I have a problem with my mouse and its driving me nuts!!! Over xmas we had a mouse problem and PURCHASED a brand new one, but this new mouse is still doing the same grrrrr!!

The only was i can explain it is........its like someone else is operating the mouse from another pc (you KNOW like remote access?) Doesn't matter where i direct the mouse, it goes all mad and does its own thing!! Someone suggested i try control panel and mouse settings....done that but its still the same. I dont think its the actual mouse because its almost brand new and the old one did the same.

Help, im going mad!!!

thanks xYou might have a virus or a trojan. Start a new topic in the "Computer viruses and spyware" section and download Hijack This and post the log on your post.

Or your mouse sensitivity might be set too high, whcih you can change from the control panel, but I don't think thats the problem in your case.http://www.victorpest.com/

Solve : Help with Emachines T3256?

Answer»

Ok I have a Emachines T3256 i just put a new power supply on and now it gets stuck at the E when trying to BOOT, any CLUE why? It has Windows XP home, you to run just fine, And after putting Power supply in it did run once but now it wont it just stays at the E on booting. Did you double check the connections on your motherboard, look closely and make sure the power connectors are pushed in all the way...

Could you please post the make/model of your new power supply...

It is Bestee ATX-300-12E Ordered from 911forpcs.com
What prompted you to GET another power supply? What problem were you having?I would have invested a few more bucks into a component as critical as a PSU...Quote from: patio on December 18, 2009, 08:31:37 AM

I would have invested a few more bucks into a component as critical as a PSU...

I was going to say that but I WANTED to make sure his motive for purchasing the psu was not related to a another possible issue, which a new psu wouldn't fixI got a new power supply because my old one was shot, Like i said Power serge screwed it up, But now I got past the E and officially getting stuck at the Windows XP load SCREEN, Any clue why there?Quote from: wowgamer on December 18, 2009, 05:10:05 PM

No, I think you left that part out
The surge may have affected other parts of your computer, but before we conclude that, let see what else we have here..

But now I got past the E and officially getting stuck at the Windows XP load screen, Any clue why there?

Are you able to boot into Safe Mode? Restart the computer and tap the F8 button until you come to Advanced Options and select Safe Mode... Does it allow you to boot up?

Yes it does, I tried doing a restore but didnt work so now im on to trying windows repair with my cdBut if you have an easier way in mind with the safe boot please tell me as ill try what u think first. Before doing anything else, boot back into Safe Mode and back up all your important files to a thumb drive, or whatever floats your boat
Then we'll be safe to try more things..

But I don't see what a Repair Install would hurt at this point, go ahead..

If that doesn't work there's a few other things we can try

Solve : Need help hooking up headphones...........?

Answer»

I just PURCHASED a microphone headset, the guy said to plug them in the BACK of the computer. I have about six inputs back there, I see the symbol of a mic, but I don't know what the other symbols MEAN. I also have speakers on my desk, one SPEAKER has volume, bass, treble control, and two inputs, shows symbol of headphones and Aux. Can I just plug my two jacks into the inputs on the speakers? I also have a webcam with a mic in it, do i have to turn my webcam mic off while using these headphones? Not sure where to plug these two headphone jacks into, or what to do with the mic on my webcam. Can anyone help me? Thanks.... Your computer should have jack that has a symbol of the headphones (similar to that symbol on your speakers) on the back (probably on your sound card) . Plug in the headphones there. That's first.

One thing at a time, so see if your headphones is working first of all. Then we get to your webcam mic thing second. There is no input on the back that has a symbol of a headphone on it. All I can see is a microphone symbol, a circle with a dot in the middle, a circle with a vertical line through it, a circle with a horizontal line through it, a left and right speaker symbol, and one that looks like a snow flake. These head phones have two jacks on the end, not just one. I have a Dell Inspiron 530 if this helps. I'm trying to find the rear view of this computer on line so I can find out what the symbols mean. This is what the back of my pc looks like. The green input is being used by my external speakers. You have to click on the top left of the PICTURE to view "All Images"

Solve : computer turns itself off and on?

Answer»

I hope this is the right area, if not i apologize.

my husbands computer turns itself on and off, in one night i heard it go off and on 18 times before i went to bed. at this point it is not usable because it wont stay on long enough to do more than show the desktop then turn itself off, then on again to just show the desktop, then off.
it is very frustrating, we bought both computers the same DAY. same type, the warranty has expired. he took it in to Major Geeks, after 389.00 and 3 weeks they put heat paste on it & said it was fixed, it worked for 1 week then same problems again. Please, can anyone help us?
Welcome to CH.
Sorry to hear of you unhappy experience.
There are a number of experts here who will spend time to help find your propblem and not charge you a dime. Just be patient, this is a forum, not a chat room. It may take a day or two for the best experts to see this post.

First guess, at this point, is the heat sink came loose again.
But there are other things that may cause this behavior.
A failing poser supply. A failing Video card. A failing DVD-drive.

Knowing the make and model you you computer would help a lot.
We scan do a search and maybe find others who have had problems like that.

Can you get the thing to run for ten minuets at a time?
Can you try to put a big fan, a desk fan, behind the computer and trty to keep it cool?
I have a very good lady friend who did the fan in back thing worked for her. But she knew that was not quite right. And she knows little about computers. Anyway, she took it to a shop and they could not figure it out! So she got another computer and give the trouble to me. And, of course, I fixed i!
HELLO,
Thank you for responding.
The computer is a Dell Inspiron 530, its about 1 and 1/2 years old. Every once in a while it will stay on for approx. 2 or 3 minutes. We took both side covers off in hopes it would help with the cooling, and we bought the heat paste stuff. My husband knows "some" stuff about computers, but not how to repair or diagnose them. I am computer illiterate, all I know how to do is turn it on and play WOW with it. So I apologize in advance for asking repeatedly "What??"
We actually did try a small fan blowing on it after we took the sides off, hasnt helped much.
I called 5 different computer repair shops (after Major Geeks), told them the problem, they said "you have a Dell and its the processor". I called Dell to get a new one and wonder of wonders the one for my computer is no longer available.
I am frustrated to say the least. I am really hoping someone here can offer help.
thank you.Quote

Quote

So, did he do anything with the heat paste?
This post is being done with speech recognition software. Some of the grammar and vocabulary may seem strange.
Here are some additional suggestions. With the case open you can obviously see if the fan on top of the CPU is running. I am not familiar with the inside of this particular computer. Some computers do not cool better with the side panels off. Here are some other steps that you might want to take before you invest any money.
With the power completely off, and I mean absolutely unplugged, disconnect the power and data cable to the floppy drive also disconnect the power and data cable to the CD-ROM drive. There is a small chance that you either one of these may have a short circuit. Not likely, but very easy to check before you do anything else. You should be able to get the computer to boot up even without the floppy drive, although it may give you an error message because the floppy is not there.
Now if after that computer stays on for more than 10 minutes at a time this would lead us to believe it was the floppy or the CD-ROM drive.
.Here's the next step. Again with the power all, we hook back up the floppy drive and we reboot again and while the machine is on we tried to prepare a floppy drive that would be bootable. Your husband should know what I mean you have to stick to light disc into the floppy and format it as a system floppy. If you can't do that, never mind will just use whatever floppy disk you have laying around.
This time we are going to disconnect only the hard drive and this CD-ROM drive but leaves the floppy drive connected stick a disk into the floppy drive and try to see if the computer will boot up. It may boot up with some kind of error message such as NTLDR missing. Don't worry about the air message, we just want to see it at least tries to boot the floppy. At this point the computer should just sit there waiting for someone to replace the floppy disc. So let it sit there for while and see if it does anything more. Letting it sit there for several minutes should not do any harm to anything. Without the CD-ROM drive and the hard drive connected, the power consumption goes down and the power supply is less likely to fold over. The term means the power supply tries to protect itself from a short circuit.
Now the next step after this, that is if this does not identify the problem, is to try a different memory stick in the computer. Possibly you could swap a memory stick out of the other computer and see how it works in this computer. Once in a while it is a memory stick that shorts out the system. Not likely, but easy thing to check. And be very, very careful when you put the memory chip in make sure the snow dust or dirt on the pans and of course you will avoid touching the pans directly with your hands if you have to clean the pants off of something try a small cloth that has been dampened with a little bit of alcohol. Do not use a cotton swab, Italy's fibers on the pin connectors.
The above are the general procedures that are in a qualified technician would use to try to isolate the problem. Often times the above procedures do not produce an immediate answer. But they are rather simple procedures to perform and should be done before engaging in more DIFFICULT diagnostic methods.
Please report back what happens. There are lots and lots of people here that can help you out.
By the way, here is somebody that claims they will sell you a new motherboard at a reasonable price. But, we're not to that point yet.

Geek-9pm, your voice recognition software veered off course in a few spots, I believe.

I'll take a guess at what you meant for the WORDS I high-lighted. "pans" and "pants" should be pins, right? And, "Italy's" should be "it leaves"? Quote

Sir, which do you think is faster in transfer performance of 100GB data assuming all drives used for the 2 arrays are identical in SPEED and capacity, 5-drive RAID-level 0 array or a 6-drive RAID-level 1?? THANK you a LOT sir You didn't specify read or write transfer rate.
Reading, the RAID 1 array should be faster, assuming a decent controller.
Writing, the RAID 0 should be faster as there is no overhead.
Hope this helps

Solve : Droid Eris help?

So i just got a Droid Eris the other day as an early christmas present, and I love the thing. However, I'm so USED to using my iPod and iTunes to manage my music, I'm kind of handicapped RIGHT now, so to speak. I was WONDERING if there was a program like iTunes that manages my music for my Eris, instead of sifting through ~200GB of somewhat unorganized file space to find which music I want to put on the phone. This is not eBay.
If you want a free listing, please go to Craig;s List.
Go there and find your area. Selling locally is the best.
http://craigslist.org/
Over here (not SURE where you're located) something like that would go for around £300-350, more or less depending on the condition, actual models of some components not listed (PSU, HDD, RAM, graphics card) and whether or not the copy of Windows is included, and whether it's OEM/retail, etc.
Also it DEPENDS who you're selling to I guess, would go for a LOT more on fleabay
Oh - I just Googled the case, and, well, to someone who likes the look of it I bet it would go for a lot more. To someone who didn't, I doubt they would touch it. So you'd have quite a division there I'd imagine.Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 20, 2010, 02:07:48 PM

Solve : Accidentally deleted recycling bin and cant get it back.?

Answer»

I accidentally deleted recycling bin and i cant get it back I tried to SEARCH for it in the start search. How do get it back?
OS?You PROBABLY didn't delete it.

Try this link.Right click on your desktop. Select properties. Go to the section where you can change your desktop background. Click CUSTOMIZE Desktop. Make SURE the recycle bin is checked. Of course he didn't delete it. He deleted the icon. Restoring is a different process depending on the OSThanks guys I got it back.Any time. The files you deleted from the recycle bin was not erased, the deletion just change its saving path.
The file management system of the hard drive makes the physical files and logical file is separate, thus, when you deleted the logical file which permit the file is visible, the physical file is still in. You can use some app to helps you to DISCOVER the lost data and recover them to your sight.WHAT?

Deleting a file does not change it's path - the file is in EXACTLY the same place it always was. However, the first letter of the file name is deleted so the pointer in the MFT can no longer see or find the file, so the system thinks it no longer exists.

Solve : Extracting/opening a 7z?

Answer»

I downloaded a file and it was in this weird format that i could not open, after searching and searching i figured out i had to USE a program called 7zip. After downloading i attempted and each time i tried to extract i failed. It stated there was an error, the error was unknown apparently. I don't know what i was doing wrong but I'm stumped. The full files name if it has an relevance
"G-Taste 1-7.7z.001" there's a second one that just now finished downloading if again it has any relevance "G-Taste 1-7.7z.002"
I figured the first PART of the problem was that my computer confused it for a 001/2 type file

So I've tried more and more things eventually doing all of this.

With the one that had 002 i deleted it and then the file turned from a winrar type file with the books and the 7z part disappeared. On the other hand, for the one with 001, for some reason once downloaded the 001 disappeared on it's own, yet when i check on the files info 001 is there, but not on the file name.
I couldn't change it to a proper 7z file, only the 002 one worked. So in the mean time i went and tried to extract the 002 file, but this error message still comes up saying "This archive is either unknown or damaged" as well as "cannot open (file name) as archive".
So i went back to trying to fix the 001 file. It seems like no matter what i tried to name it, it doesn't change, i put .zip, .rar, .7z and nothing, the file type still remains 001. Man this one is a *censored*
So i gave you as much info as i can along with a screen cap of both the icons and the properties of both files.

Well one of the guys on newgrounds told the correct way to solve the problem. Turns out i just had to put them both in one folder and extract the first one, no renaming. At least they were kind enough to try and help. (didn't mean it in a way that meant you didn't try)watching hentai huh?

Solve : Determing cause of high latency?

Answer»

Hey guys! First post

Basically when I'm playing WoW I normally get a 200ms-ish ping. Then once in a while for this short period I'll get 2000-5000ms pings which seem to be resolved by opening up my router page and disconnecting and reconnecting the DHCP lease. For the life of me I can't recall right now WHETHER its all occurring at the same time of day though.

Anybody know how I could find out what's the cause of it? And possibly put in corrective/preventive actions?

Thanks a bunch

Alex First..

Welcome to the forum

One thing you can try is set your computer to use a static IP, instead of a leased IP through DHCP; or, you could continue using DHCP but set a "RESERVATION" (goes by a couple names depending on router... my D-link calls it a "reserved" address. Basically, what HAPPENS for me is the local IP address 192.168.101 can only be used by my desktop, 192.168.102 can only be used by my laptop, and the other PCs in the house CONNECT to anything else. I did this for the express purpose of applying varying port-forwarding rules to both. Only other option aside from those would be to get a completely new router entirely; and this is also all assuming that the PC itself isn't causing it, which might be a little more difficult to determine. This is the only game this occurs with?Actually, it's affecting all the computers in the house when it happens. PLACING reservations for all the coms now, will see how it goes.

Thanks for the help

Your computer cannot upload stuff all on its own. By upload I mean like when you upload a video onto youtube or upload photo's onto facebook. What you are seeing is COMPLETELY normal. If you are connected to the internet, then there is always activity, up and downstream.yes, for example, in order to download a webpage, you have to send a request to the server first. If he's been infected and gone zombie that would ACCOUNT for constant outgoing traffic.Quote from: patio on January 26, 2010, 09:30:28 AM

Or (less likely) hacked.well, when my PC is idle it has about 1000 outgoing PACKETS EVERY second or so. Approaching 8 Billion send and 15 billion received ATM too.
Oh, no argument BC. I think what Patio & I are suggesting is there is always the possibility of malware or hacking causing exactly the same actions.Quote from: Allan on January 26, 2010, 10:24:37 AM

EDIT: just reopen it using word and save it elsewhere. Use the recent documents list.

Well, couldn't find it in temp internet files. I'll have to OPEN it again, like you said, make the changes again (2 hours of work) and save it as ... . Thing is, I knew better than just press save and then close the document.

I mean, reopen the document, using words recently used list.

if you save the file, it appears on this list- the list that shows when you click the office BUTTON thing in the top left of Word 2007 (which I assume your using, based on the docx extension).

it will still have the changes, and you can use save as to save it elsewhere.

Good point. Actually, we should independently check various procedures performed by automotive service SHOPS. I know a guy who discovered his oil level was dangerously low, EVEN right after an oil change. And, I once has a shop re-do an oil change because they had grossly over-filled. I also experienced a situation where a local auto service shop changed automatic transmission fluid and did not fill to the PROPER level. When I discovered it and called them, the guy realized what had happened; he got interrupted by a telephone call while working on the car and forgot to finish PUTTING in the transmission fluid.

Solve : PC to HDTV please help?

Answer»

I just got a hdtv today and I wanna hook my computer to it with vga to vga. But it says that theres no signal. Please help.Your TV is saying there is no signal I assume. This is normal, especially with a brand new HDTV. Sometimes what you have to do is change the order in which you turn the devices on. I WOULD turn everything off. Shut down your PC. Plug the VGA into the TV, making SURE it is secure at both ends. Turn the TV on. Turn the PC on and give it a minute. I've gone through this every time i've purchased a new HDTV, no MATTER what i'm hooking it up to. PS3, PC, DVD Surround, etc.

Also, after you get a signal and can see your desktop, you'll PROBABLY have to change the display resolution on your PC.

One more thing... You might want to actually unplug your TV from the wall outlet. Then plug it back in before you connect the VGA to it. Then turn it on.You might also think about getting a new video card with a HDMI output.Quote from: rthompson80819 on January 26, 2010, 02:15:20 PM

Yeah that too. If he doesn't already have one. I just assume VGA because newer HDTV's also have them as an input.

Solve : Device connection problems using USBs?

Answer»

Hi everyone, I hope that somewhere someone has had the same problems as I am having and managed to resolve them relatively painlessly. I recently tried to connect my Samsung U600 mobile to my pc to download some pictures from it. Already have the Samsung PC Studio on my pc but my wonderful system said that there was a problem installing the DRIVER! Despite several installing and reinstalling attempts this is still not working. Turned to my other Samsung mobile a Tocco Lite. Again installed and uninstalled the New Samsung PC Studio several times, plus two separate calls to Samsung UK support, I am still unable to connect either mobile to my pc. In desperation turned to my Samsung digital camera. Yup, you guessed, EXACTLY the same connection problem. Currently use XP as my OS with Avast as my security. Now BEGINNING to believe that there is a setting somewhere on my PC which is stopping it from connecting to these devices. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Many thanks, Elaine. Lancashire, England. What you may want to try is to uninstall Samsung software using ADD /REMOVE programs...
Then unhook the camera and power down....
Re-boot the machine...plug in the camera and check in Control Panel/Cameras and Recording Devices and see if XP picks it up that way...
It will be listed in Explorer as a Mass Storage Device and show up as another drive...

So, it should be very easy by now to get world wide TV anywhere.
There are two ways to do it.

1. Using a satellite dish with additional equipment.
2. Using the internet if you have a good high-speed connection.

Solve : Help with misbehaving DVD burner please...?

Answer»

Hey, you folks have been very helpful in the past. I have an extremely irritating issue that I need some help/advice with please!

In a nutshell:

My DVD burner simply refuses to recognize blank CDR/RW media. However, DVD burning seems fine.

I have tried various high quality blank CDR media: Imation, FujiFilm [Taiyo Yudens] and TaiyoYudens. None are recognized either by any of my burning software or by the native WinXP CD writing app.

I KNOW that CD-RW media usage can be hit and miss. This is OK. But I would very much like to have the ability to burn to CDs when I need to.

This is driving me crazy!!!!!

Details:
WinXP Pro SP2, all patches current
HP xw6200 Workstation, Xeon P4 3.2ghz
4GB RAM

Burner: HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GWA4164B [this is a generally crappy LG drive according to my Google research, but it works for me with DVDs so far.

FW is the latest that was available]

This drive is fully multi format capable according to Everest System Info and a variety of other diagnostic tools.

Burning Apps:
CDBurnerXP, ImgBurn, DeepBurner, Nero 9.0 lite and native WinXP CDR burning applet. None can detect any of the blank CDRs I try.

What I have done:
- I have tried disabling the native XP CDR burning app in hopes this was causing some weird conflict with my burning software. No joy.

- Used 2 lens cleaning CDs [I didn't think this would help, but gave it shot anyway]. No joy.

The drive can READ previously burned CDRs on all different media.

The drive can READ commercially burned audio CDRs.

Am I missing something? Do something wrong?

I do not really want to start ripping things out in my PC. I am in the process of archiving a ton of content to DVD-R - because the drive may be finicky, I do not want to make things worse at this point until I am done with my archiving.

I suspect the drive [already considered a crappy OEM drive] is on its way out and I may need to replace it. But I just do not want to do this yet. I also don't want to start uninstalling/reinstalling the drive via XP - again, because I am archiving stuff and it works for DVD-Rs I don't want to risk mucking things up.

Can someone educate me on this issue? Am I missing something obvious/doing something wrong?

I understand there may be 2 different burning lasers, one for DVDs and one for CDRs in DVD burning devices. Is it possible my CDR burn laser is kaput?

Any and all replies/help/advice desperately welcomed....

cheers,
-lestatar

Most likely, CD laser is out and you need new drive.yah, When DVDs work and CD do not, it's a sign of the CD laser going outBroni, EEviac....

Thanks guys....I was afraid of that...

Is there any way to tell for sure? Is it possible only the CD burn laser is going bad and the DVD laser is still ok?

In other words, can I TRUST my DVD burns?

I always use verify after burns and only burn on top quality media at 8x speed max.

And if I need a new burner, any recommendations for around $50.00? It's been awhile since I had to shop for any type of burner.

LiteOn still a top brand? Sony? Pioneer or HP? [lightscribe or something like it would be cool if I have to buy a new unit, but then I need Lightscribe-capable discs right?]

I definitely plan to stay away from LG. This drive I am having probs with is an OEM LG piece of junk...

Thanks again guys...

-lestatar

The only way to tell for sure, would be to install in drive in another computer, but since brand new drive can be had for 30 bucks shipped, personally, I'd be too lazy to swap drives.

BTW... DVD burner has 4 lasers: CD read, CD burn, DVD read, DVD burn.I definitely plan to stay away from LG. This drive I am having probs with is an OEM LG piece of junk...Quote

You may be right about that.
Here is a quick test.
Get a 'Live' CD, like Knopix or Puppy.

See if the CD or DVD device will boot it.
If so, then see if the Linux media burner works with it.

A very simple Linux I use is puppy.

If you have an old 128MB USB drive, you can load puppy on it!
It makes a nice thing to have in your tool kit for the problem we have here. Is is a DVD drive just too wired? Test it on the Puppy. If puppy and read and write the drive, it is most likely alright and it is Windows that has driver pproblems. The Puppy drivers are very generic.

Solve : Free Movies Online. Yes?r?

Answer»

This is not contrary to forum Rules. (I Think.)
This is a discussion about movies and television and the Internet and copyright and if things are free and if you have to pay for things and if you're breaking the law.
So the topic is, Can you WATCH movies free online?
Simple simple and direct answer is: No!
But that is not the really correct answer. In the first place, your connection to the Internet is paid by somebody. Whenever you watch some kind of video presentation on the Internet, there is always some kind of advertising or promotion connected to it and that's what pays for. However, this question usually is GIVEN to mean that you can watch a movie without having to go to your local video store or to a THEATER and lay down some money out of your wallet. Yes, you can watch a movie on your home computer without paying directly out of her wallet. But does it VIOLATE the copyright law? Possibly. Would you be thrown into jail? Not likely. But that has happened.
A LITTLE bit of investigation shows that lots of people are watching movies now over the Internet and apparently it is allowed for some reason. Below is a link to a wiki that someone put up to explain it in real simple terms that anybody can understand. Most of the sites that offer movies have some kind of disclaimer or some kind of terms of service that you have to read and that will make it clear as to if you are violating the law or not. If they say they are not violating the law, and if you believe what they say is true, then you have a reasonable defense in case someone accuses you of doing something unlawful. Here is the link I mentioned. Of course, there are lots more likely use. This is one I picked out because it was easy-to-understand. Please read it and you tell me what you think.

Solve : MiniLinux?

Answer»

Hi All,

I recently bought a 17-year old (!?) laptop for peanuts. It works perfectly but only has a floppy disk drive to get software onto it (CD/DVD readers and USB sticks hadn't been invented then I suppose ). I've been looking out for some kind of mini- or microlinux to install via floppy. I've got somewhere with muLinux ( http://www.micheleandreoli.it/mulinux/ ) but development was stopped on this five or so years AGO and the trail's gone pretty cold.

Does anyone have any ADVICE about how to run a basic Linux system on such an old machine which only has a floppy drive and a 200M HD for storage?
Here is a list. Go down the page abit.
Small and live CD Linux based distributions
http://bengross.com/smallunix.html

OR
Puppy Linux
small, fast and free OS
Just go to http://puppylinux.org/

Rather than use the floppy, remove the hard and a n slave it into a Desktop PC and load the puppy onto it. Then put the drive back into the other older PC.

Many thanks for the link to the list of small Linuxes. I suppose it was because you mentioned Puppy Linux separately that I looked there first.
This is certainly an interestingly small Linux with an active following. You can't SAY that, I think, for muLinux, which I had also downloaded and had running (sort of) on the old laptop.

I downloaded the Puppy ISO this afternoon and have run the system on my Desktop PC. I already have more questions but of course it would be better to put those on the Puppy forum.

With regard to INSTALLING a miniLinux on my old laptop - I appreciate your suggestion to remove the internal hard disk and plumb it temporarily into my desktop PC - but that's not the sort of thing I would dare to do without detailed expert advice (preferably from someone looking over my shoulder )

Thanks anyway but it seems I'll have to try and prune Puppy down enough to get it over to the laptop on one or two floppys.

I don't have to have a GUI - I'd perhaps be happier with a command line interface for studying Linux. (More questions for the Puppy forum!)

Thanks once again for this kick-start in the right direction... .

Thanks for your time. There can be any number of reasons why the messages are not delivered, and many of them are not under your control...

- routing error at your ISP or the recipients ISP
- the receiving server is rejecting the message
- the receiving server is not alive
- the receiving server cannot be connected.

Also, it can hold up to 8GB. Should he increase?

Should he increase from what? The SCREEN size and OS aren't important - ram and processor speed are. And all things being equal, the apps should run fine.Sorry....
2GB of DDR2 system memory rated at 800MHz and expandable up to 8GB
250GB SATA hard drive, rated at 5400 rpm
I don't know what the processor speed is, but since the system is rated "powerful enough" to ship with Windows 7 you'll be fine.AMD Sempron processor for NOTEBOOK PCs, SI-42
Features 2.1GHz speed, an 800MHz frontside bus, and 512KB L2 cache

Thanks for your advice....Remember that MS Office has been around a long time and was running just fine before Windows 7 and TODAY's processors. It is a good choice. Go for it!
That PC can l run any version of Office.
And it is fast.

Just do not put junk on it. I mean those 'free' trail things that mess with the system and later you have a hard time trying to remove.

One of the first things you do with any new computer is to set up a recovery procedure recommended by Microsoft. But some people turn off the built-in safety net because the local geek SAID it would make the system faster.

I have a rebel xti digital camera. I am getting a message that READS "there is a problem with the CF card. Replace the CF Card" Before purchasing a new card I tried formatting the old one, which did not fix the problem. I purchased a brand new card, and I get the same message.

Does anyone KNOW what the problem could be?

Thanks,

Jim Allan,

Thank you very much for the link I have also POSTED my info there as well!

Solve : Ideal Computer?

Answer»

Hi I`m not only ugly, I`m also a newby and pretty dumb too.

I`ve started out with a refurbished Dell computer Pentium 2.8MHz, 2.79 GHz of Ram (don`t know what any of this means). I now want to upgrade, and would ask what to look for. I need something pretty swift, I have a low boredom thresh-hold waiting for web pages to load. I don`t play games, but surf the web mostly, and only download DVDs.

I use a dongle instead of a landline, does this contribute to the slowness?

Any IDEAS, my budget is about £500.sounds to me that any slowness would either be from a slow connection (the dongle you mentioned, maybe) or perhaps the PC just needs a good clean up. I'd have to say that the former is what I'm leaning towards.

Thanks for that. In your opinion, the spec. I mentioned is adequate for what I want to do, the computer has been `cleaned up`, so it`s probably best to have a landline? Quote from: Uglybloke on December 16, 2009, 02:11:14 PM

if that's the case, it certainly seems like it would be your internet connection and not the computer determining the speed.

Thanks BC_programmer!!

Solve : Accessing websites?

Answer»

Help! I have been using computers for MANY years and never had this problem before. All of a sudden, I am unable to access some websites and some podcasts on iTunes that I was getting to before. The only thing that happened on our (mine and my husband's) computers before this problem started OCCURRING was that my husband had to re-do the settings on our modem, and he got the SECURITY key to enter so that we would have a secure connection on out Wi-Fi. I had no clue where to go to ask this question, so I came here.

Does ANYONE here know what is causing this problem and what we need to do to FIX this? I am desperate and frustrated!

Solve : Removing files from a Hard drive??

Answer»

I have a hard drive that is being used as my main OS drive RIGHT now and it has documents on it, I'll refer to this HDD as drive1. I want to INSTALL my OS on another HDD (drive2) and then use drive1 for only documents.

Is it safe to delete just the system files from drive1, then take it out and install the OS on drive2 and then put drive1 back in afterwards? I want to do it in a "safe" way where I won't loose my documents.Sure, you can do that. You won't lose your DATA files unless you intentionally delete them or format the drive. Remember that any installed programs will have to be reinstalled.Actually there is no real reason to delete "system" files...if you simply UNHOOK the drive...install to your other drive and re-connect the original drive as a slave everything will be there and can be accessed.

You will then be booting to the new install....

Solve : Can you guys help me pick a laptop processor? Please??

Answer»

I have a Toshiba Satellite that I BOUGHT almost a year ago. It has an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T6400.

I love it! It's perfect for everything we need but we also have an old desktop and we're looking to replace that but we're trying to do it cheaply.

I found another Toshiba Satellite for $399 that has a AMD Athlon II Dual Core Processor M300. How much SLOWER is this than what I ALREADY have?

It will primarily be used by my 9 year old son and only occasionally by me.

It's this one :
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba+-+Satellite+Laptop+with+AMD+Athlon%26%23153%3B+II+Dual-Core+Processor+-+Graphite+Gray/9553896.p?id=1218123211002&skuId=9553896

Advice? Is this a good BUY or a good price on a really slow laptop?

Edited to ADD: The processor on my current Satellite Laptop is running at 2 GHz.

Thanks!!

Solve : need some help to "pump up the volume"?

Answer»

Hi there. I am hoping someone can help me here. I have an HP laptop that is CONNECTED to my HP video monitor (so that my 5 year old can see her games better!). Right now, all sound comes from the video monitor... I didn't set it up that way, the Geek Squad did. I have been frustrated because when she plays games (or I watch video clips) we can barely hear the sound coming from the video monitor. I opened the little speaker icon and have the "mixer" volume at maximum output. Today I went and bought a pair of computer speakers. They connect through my headset plug in thingy on my LAPTOP. Just TRIED them out and I get nothing. EVEN when I disconnect my MONSTER cable (that connects the laptop to the video monitor) I get nothing. It's almost like my laptop volume is disabled or something. Can anyone help me to "pump up the volume" Thank you!Your 5 year old plays games? Woah. Genius.

Let's see.

laptop -> (audio + video) VGA/HDMI OUT/other cables -> video monitor?

fact:
Some/most video screens' speakers don't have stupendous sound quality.

Now to help you, what I want to know is:

1) What kind of cabling are you using to hook up the laptop to the video monitor?
Sounds to me like you are only passing the video signal and not the audio signal..
Is it VGA? HDMI?

2) You opened up the speaker icon where? On the screen itself or on the Operating System on the laptop?
Are you on XP or Vista by the way? 32 or 64 bit (System Properties)?

3) I need to know all the kinds of cables running between your monitor/speakers and laptop.
Describe/name all. Even your 'monster cable'.
Let's see.. 'headset plugin thingy'.. I'm having a hard time understanding what that is.
Perhaps you mean audio out? That green entry?
Did you read the speakers manual on how to install them?
Do you already have audio drivers for your soundcard?
Are you SURE nothing is muted (seeing through the sound panel)?

Also check that 'Device Volume' and 'Speaker volume' are set to max in Control Panel -> Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices -> Sounds and Audio devices.

Also, in there, go to the 'Audio' tab and check that your new soundcard is selected on 'Sound Playback'.

Solve : Best Resolution for YouTube?

Answer»

I will be uploading to YouTube and I need to know what RESOLUTION is the best. I see that low-quality videos buffer faster than high-quality videos.
I will be uploading videos in 16:9 (No HD) and I need to know the best resolution which has GOOD quality and BUFFERS fast at the same time.I GUESS between 640*360 or 852*480 would be the best.
Many PEOPLE upload videos as HD but are really in 852*480 like the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5EuYtyp_eA.
When I upload to YouTube, my videos are in 852*480 before I get a HD camcorder in end 2010-2012.

fdd cd R
evga 9500gt 1gb ddr2
win7 64 bit

is it best to install the operating system before installing gpu and other add on cards?
and should I fire up the pc for a first time before installing OS

Follow the guides on this website: http://www.buildacomputerguide.com/I'm assuming this is a brand new PC, not yet assembled?
If not then the below would still apply, just not all of it if that makes sense.
Others MAY have different methods, but my personal way of doing it would be to install all the hardware first and of course double or triple check all the connections.
Fire it up, with your KEYBOARD, mouse and monitor connected, enter the BIOS, make sure all the hardware is detected properly and change any settings you need to change.
Most importantly, set your DVD drive as the first boot device so you can boot from your Windows disk.
Insert the disk, save the BIOS settings and reboot, boot from the disk, and you're all set.
Once Windows is installed, connect anything else such as printers, webcams etc and install the appropriate drivers.
Windows 7 includes default drivers for most hardware out there which will be enough to get you started, if UPDATED drivers are available use those though as they will give better performance and/or more features.
Hope this helps

Edit: I need to type a little FASTER, it seems I was beaten to the punch (post?).Thanks KPAC for the Link thats the first build site that said I wont need to format my hdd before installing theOS. other than that. as soon as my OS gets here I'll be ready to do a first start.

As for resolution, the higher the better.Quote

Solve : ASUS has good rebate system?

Answer»

Just thought I'd share this. I bought an ASUS VH192D monitor at the end of November. A $30 rebate was part of the deal. The rebate form obtained from newegg.com instructed me to register at asus.4myrebate.com. The usual mail-in form, along with copy of receipt/invoice and original UPC was required. The purpose of REGISTERING on asus.4myrebate.com is that the rebate submitter can be notified by email.

Today, I received an email from them SAYING they have received my documentation. The email has a LINK, with a tracking number embedded in the link, to a page where I can see the status of my rebate. Now, I know the Internet is being USED more and more for interaction with rebate submitters but I found a feature at asus.4myrebate.com that I had not SEEN before. The tracking page for my rebate has a link to "Click Here to View Your Rebate Documentation". Clicking the link opened a PDF file containing copies of all documentation I had mailed to them, including the front of the envelope.

It's nice to have that visual confirmation in the PDF file that they have all my documentation. Have any of you seen this technique used with your rebate submissions? heh, I've never bothered with rebates. But I feel like a hero because I'm part of the statistic that makes it financially viable for manufacturers to give mail-in rebates.

Solve : Dell Warranty Question?

I WOULD like to add a second hard drive to my computer for backup's and was WONDERING if that would void my warranty? Why wouldn't you ask Dell?Allan;
I tried to for over an hour with no luck so I thought I'd ask here. Manufacturer's websites and dial up alway's seem to take forever!I own a bunch of Dells and have added HD's, optical drives, etc. On those occasions I've had to call for service the question never came up. Bottom line, how would they know anyway? If it ever NEEDS to be returned or if Dell sends someone to fix your system, just REMOVE the drive. Or not - I can't imagine it would matter.

Solve : Russain Speech/Audio To English Text/Subtitle?

Answer»

When I was on a trip to Russia, my mates recorded a few movies, but since NONE of us know russian, it's impossible to understand what the people said..

Is there any tool I can use to analyze the russian audio from these movies and create a text file in english from it? or even a subtitle file ?

PS. I don't know where to post this, but if the category is wrong, please move itWe won't provide any assistance with illegally OBTAINED software or media. You could just GO out and buy a legal copy of the movies.Did I EVER say it was "illegal movies" ? - No, I didn't..

Maybe I should have mentioned they were amateur movies, preformed at no cost, just for fun..

And since these movies doesn't exist in any store, it's not possible to obtain a cd with english audioIf you got somebody who is bilingual in Russian and English, with experience as a translator, to listen to the audio and type, with timings, a text file, then you might have some chance of success, but to do it with a computer, even badly, frankly the technology does not exist.

Even if I did find someone with that knowledge, I highly doubt it would be affordable well then... you better start learning russian! QUOTE from: BC_Programmer on December 30, 2009, 07:34:32 AM

Solve : eMachines company sucks?

Answer»

Here is a recent conversation between eMachines tech. support and myself..

My initial question:

The license key on back of the computer has been partially torn off and I cannot see the Windows Vista license key. Thus, if I want to reinstall the Operating system I will not be able to unless I recover the license key.

Response by tech:

Thank you for contacting eMachines. I'll be happy to assist you with this issue.

After verifying serial number XCC7320030557 we see that your product is out of warranty.

Having reviewed your email, I understand that you are having issues with the product key.

Dan, please be informed that the operating system that comes with your product is an OEM version and does not need product key if you are trying to reinstall it using the partition or RCD purchased from us.

There would be a data loss if you are doing recovery. So please take back up of your data before you do a recovery. To take a back up, you can contact Answers by Acer at 1-800-237-6483 which is a paid support or else you can take the system to any local store nearby.

For further clarifications please feel free to visit our web site http://emachines.com/
Thank you for contacting eMachines,
Have a great day!

Respectfully,
eMachines Online Technical Support

My reply:

What you are saying about the operating system product key does not make sense. I just reinstalled the operating system using the disc that came with the computer and it is requesting that the product key be typed in for Windows activation. When I right-click on "Computer" and select "properties", it says that I have 30 days to activate Windows. This cannot be done WITHOUT the original OEM product key that came stamped on back on this (T5088) computer. So if eMachines has that Product key on record I would appreciate it if they could send me a copy of it.

eMachines reply:

Thank you for contacting eMachines. I’ll be happy to assist you with product issue.

As per our record your system is out of warranty.

Dan, your system came with OEM version of operating system. You do not need any product key to install the OEM version of operating system. You do not need the product key if you are using recovery disc provided by us.

If you need further support concerning this issue, We do offer a phone-based support options for Out of Warranty products that also covers "How Do I" questions as well.

"Answers by eMachines" is a convenient and affordable fee based technical support service that is great for answering "how to" questions or technical issues once the product warranty has expired. With your purchase of the service you would have instant access to our Highly Trained agents.

You may call 1.866-621-2237. However, it's a fee based support. Calling cards are available for 30 minutes ( $59.99 ), 90 minutes ( $129.99 ), or 15 issues ( $199.99 ) and the validity will be 1 year.

Another option is that you can approach a local technician.

For further clarifications please feel free to visit our web site http://www.emachines.com

Thank you for contacting eMachines,

Respectfully,

It's fairly evident that they don't want to help me. Essentially what they're saying is that, if I want my product key back I'm going to have to pay money.

Warranty or no warranty... what a crock of sh##

What he means is, your experience is not uncommon. probably others have gone through the same crap.Oh, sorry trout The truth is, only the last character of the product key is missing. The second to the last character is partially visible... It is either an "X", or a "Y"...

I could try substituting one of those two characters for the second to the last characters and try every other possible character for the last character

This would probably take QUITE some TIME I mean, it would be good for posting on a forum if I ever need to convince them that I "really did" have a serial number at one time... Having said that, I was thinking about getting an E-machines system recently, (a good price in Staples) but a web search turned up loads and loads of complaints about their customer service.

I believe there's something you can type into Google that brings up loads and loads of valid Windows product keys...

I don't understand why they tell you to contacts Answers by Acer or Answers by eMachines. Why not tell you to call Microsoft and get a new key? Certainly cheaper than their fee based "support" option.Quote from: cruisin702 on January 18, 2010, 01:06:21 AM

Maybe Microsoft won't support key requests if the OS was bought preinstalled? It certainly sounds worth a try though.

As Patio once said, "eMachines are like BIC lighters" when something goes wrong you just throw them away MS will probably issue you a new key faster than eMachines...
