Solve : December monthly poll?

Answer»

My computer is ancient in computer age. When I PUT it together -custom mishmash- it scored in the top ten percent at PCPitstop; it now scores in the bottom 35 or less, except in one category.

It runs XP Professional (retail copy), SP3, AMD Athlon, 1.19 GHz, 768 MB RAM, 120 GB ST3120026A hard drive - Barracuda 7200.7, Maxtor One Touch II USB external hard drive 100 GB.

Security: Prevx, Online Armor Premium, Sandboxie, Trojan Remover, SpywareBlaster.

I uninstalled Eset's NOD32, got a partial refund, and bought LICENSE for Prevx. It is lighter on RAM use, 15 MB versus NOD32's 45 MB. Prevx is more effective too, and that says something. NOD32 is one of the best av products. So all of my real time security now has about the same RAM usage as NOD32 alone. Built mine earlier this year and I still use my old one which is about 6 years old.

Solve : Need new Toshiba laptop battery?

Where is the best place to purchase a NEW Toshiba laptop BATTERY. According to Toshiba webpage, Toshiba Primary Extended Capacity 9-Cell Li-Ion Battery Pack

I've looked online at numerous places and prices range from 47.86 and up. How do I know which one is reputable?
Thanks
Well the cheapest I could find was some refurbished ones at Overstock.com(I don't recommend u buy those unless your on a tight budget) Anypowersupply.com has some good DEALS, but are you sure you need the Extended Capacity version because that particular type is quite expensive.try ebay tooBatteries Plus has stores all across the US and they have a 1 YEAR warranty on laptop batteries.Without links to the vendors you are considering i'd be hard pressed to offer up a logical response...Batteries Plus

Solve : RCA RP5120 "bad file format" error?

Answer»

I recorded a very important hour-long conversation with this cute little Digital Voice Recorder. After downloading the software, all the little trial recordings I did work just FINE. The one big file doesn't play: it just gives me the little error message "bad file format".

It will playback on the machine itself, just not on my COMPUTER, not with the software (and THEREFORE I also can't convert the file to .exe or .wav) I'm stuck with it on the recorder.

Any ideas how to fix the file?

Right click the file, go to "Properties" and under "Type Of File" tell us exactly what it says there.

When I right click on the file from inside the DVM software I don't get the properties option. When I do so from windows explorer it says "VOC file"

And now I think I may have a clue about how I messed this up in the first place. When I first did the software install I had that explorer window open and I right clicked and renamed the file. Then I tried to open it from inside the software and got the bad file message.

Now I just made it worse (YIKES! -- maybe I should RATE myself "just familiar enough to really MESS things up if left on my own" or "only familiar enough to follow directions, but shouldn't be let loose inside a right click") -- from explorer I re-renamed it back to the original name. Now it doesn't even show up in the software! It's still visible when that folder is viewed from explorer, and it still is a VOC file when I right click and look at properties. What exact file did you rename?I renamed a file called "A0000007.VOC" to "AHA081008.VOC" and then to simply "AHA.VOC" It was in a folder "A" on the machine (still is, when I look with explorer.)

The other folders on the machine are "B" "C" "D" and "Setup" Did you actually renamed that file, when it was still on Digital Voice Recorder, or when you moved it to your computer?I actually renamed it using explorer while it was still on the recorder, and it's still there. I haven't yet moved it to the computer. I guess I could copy it to the computer using explorer... shall I? Copy it to your hard drive.
VOC files should open with WinAmp, and dBpoweramp decoder. It won't copy. I get an error saying "cannot copy: the file or directory is corrupted or unreadable"

And now I can no longer find it and play it from the recorder itself.

[Yikes!}Voice recorders and Music players really need to leave the immature room of proprietary software. This sounds just as bad as the Apple format restrictions.

Okay, when you plug the device into your computer, it appears in My Computer, right?
And you are able to browse the folders and see files?

If this audio file isnt important, I would reformat the device if your are unable to read data from it, also make sure that any "Read-Only" switches (or locks) are off.

Also, download this:
http://filehippo.com/download_klite_codec_pack/
This is a codecs pack that should allow your normal players to open just about any audio/video file... Thanks, Zylstra, I share your sentiments!

This is a very important file -- I spent a lot of time, money and airplane travel to have it.

I don't want to lose it -- how can I recover it?

I know no one has posted anything on here for a while, but the product continues to be produced. And, thus, the issue persists (that's how I found out about this forum).

Anyway, I am on my fourth recorder, and all of them have had the "Bad Format" issue. So, I called several telephone support numbers for RCA. Finally, I was referred to the official support line for Digital Voice Recorders (DVR's):

AudioVox (RCA company):
800-894-0956

I spoke to a customer 'support' representative (I'll leave nameless since they only go on first name basis, anyway, without offering any further identifying information). She was helpful to the degree that she admitted there was nothing anyone could do but reformat their recorder.

She said there were a million things that could have created this problem (not safely removing recorder from PC, etc). Of the things that a user could be blamed for, not one I did. Her response was that AudioVox/RCA has no control over this issue and "like a virus" will just happen. Once a file is corrupted, there is NOTHING you can do to retrieve the file.

I asked why they continue to produce the product when they know the problem persists. Her response is that is doesn't happen to 'everybody'. But it's happened to me on every single recorder that I, and colleagues, have purchased, coincidentally.

RCA (AudioVox) is quite aware of the issue. From what I gathered from the customer support person, there is nothing nor anything they will do to fix the persistent problem. If the item is still under warranty, and you have your receipt, you can send copies of everything, pay the shipping and send the product to them. I don't know what happens from there.

In my opinion, the product, when it works, works fantastically well. But if you are depending on these recordings for your livelihood and it starts producing the "Bad File Format" error persistently like it has for me on several recorders, it is a nightmare product since the recordings are far more valuable than the recorder.

Be clear, other than reformatting your recorder and losing all your recorded material, I was told there is nothing I could do if you receive a bad file format error. Nothing.

Sadly, I got the impression that the representative just did not really care.I have the same problem with the bad file format but Mine goes beyond that

Solve : Satellite internet?

Answer»

We still cannot get high speed internet where we live - dial up is so frustrating! I am looking for people who have the Hughsnet satellite for internet - since it's a 2 year contract, with no trial period to see how you like it, I am leary of spending the money. I'd love to hear how those who have it, like it. Thanks for your help. Many smaller DSL providers do not advertise so i'd suggest checking the link below 1st...

Even if you do not find a local service the site is a well put together wealth of info on ALL types of ISP's including sattelite...

Best of Luck !

DSL Reports.I would definitely check all other options before going to Hughesnet. Hughes is a quality company and I'm sure their service is comparable to most cable and DSL services, but it is expensive.

I can't remember the exact numbers, but I remember the phone companies claiming to have some form of DSL available in almost all of the USA. And many other countries have been much more aggressive about high speed internet.

DSL availability and speeds are based on how close you are to a phone company central office or fiber termination point from the central office.

Even a slow DSL service would be better than dial up.I would think satellite internet still better than dial up, but there's probably the issue of lag, cuz the data has to travel to satellite and back.I dont know about HughesNet but I had a horrible experience with WildBlue.I thought since I had DISH satellite and never had any problems I would give it a try. Didnt realize the 2 are seemingly totally unrelated companies even though Dish advertises the WildBlue. BARELY was able to get on the internet and the customer service was the worst I have ever dealt with. I was out $500 and never got any real service out of it. After 2 weeks I gave up and unplugged it. I ended up having to cancel my checking account so they would quit charging me for "service" that I never received. I realize you didnt ask about WildBlue, just thought I'd warn you in advance in case you decided to compare. HughesNet could be a great service but after my round with the other I was afraid to take the chance on trying another since the setup and contract is so costly. We have had HughesNet for six months and it has been working well.
We have the 1 megabit connection which costs $60 per month.
Equipment and installation is supposed to be $400 but there seems to always be a rebate dropping it to around $250 - $300.

This is our speed test result.

There is a daily bandwidth cap of 200 megabytes but we rarely reach that limit. HughesNet has a webpage which will tell how much bandwidth has been used so far so you can avoid hitting the limit. If you do hit the limit (we did once) the connection drops to the speed of dial-up for about one day and then go back to normal. Anything downloaded between 2 am and 7 am does not affect the bandwidth cap. I use a program called Free Download Manager to schedule very large downloads during that time.

The connection has dropped out a couple of times during some very heavy thunderstorms but did not have trouble while it was snowing. Because we have our dish mounted on a pole on the ground as opposed to the side of the house it is easy to brush snow off the dish if it gets to deep.

Overall, the service has been very good (much better than dial-up) and if you cannot get anything else, I would recommend HughesNet.QUOTE

We still cannot get high speed internet
where we live - dial up is so frustrating!

Could you tell us where you live? Not you actual location, but the general area. Are you withing ten MILES of a city? Are you in North America? Are there a number of people in your area also wanting better internet?

There are some alternatives to Satellite. You MIGHT have microwave and cellular service nearby. We can't get DSL where I live either. I had Hughes Net for 5 years and I've had Wildblue for the last 2 years.

I love my Wildblue. It's cheaper than Hughes both monthly and upfront. I get excellent customer service but I BOUGHT mine from my local electric Co Op so they have on site CS. They all speak plain english and I can understand them.

With Hughes the CS was always outsourced. I'd usually end up with a foreigner that spoke very broken hard to understand english which made it difficult.

Through my local co op I only paid $150 up front and I pay $51.00 a month. Interesting.

Two posters with satellite internet service, one hates Hughes (although it sounds more like customer service issues rather than video service) and the other one loves Hughes.

One loves Wildblue and the other one hates it.

My ex worked for the president of an electric co-op and I learned a lot about co-ops during that time, and most of the employees of co-ops I met are good hard working people, who are in effect are employees of their customers, and because of that they usually go the extra mile to provide good customer service.Thank you so much for your responses! I have learned alot! We live in NC, and we are in the country, but not the boonies. We can't get cable tv either though, so we had to get a satellite dish. I will definitely check out the Wildblue mentioned here. I hate to sound stupid, but what exactly is a co-op?Quote from: jack0723 on December 30, 2009, 07:55:46 PM
I hate to sound stupid, but what exactly is a co-op?
It's short for co-operative, it usually means when the employees own the company.Oh okay. I did check out that link that was posted on here - guess who offers the only high speed? HughsNet! Just my luck. Thanks again everyone - I really appreciate the feedback.Don't know anything about Wildblue's internet service, but if you can get any satellite service, like Hughes, you should be able to get all of them.

Solve : Rural BroadBand in a Barn new you. Soon!?

Answer»

Bringing end of line broadband to rural America.
Rather than being a news story, this is one of my rambling lectures. However, , if you want to read the news it was in the Associated Press just a while back. They're supposed to be a stimulus the something like over $7 billion to bring broadband into rural America. You might want to look that up in Google. [CBS link below]
Meanwhile, let me explain a few little details that perhaps the average person is not aware of. Many years ago we enjoyed Coast to Coast television programs in real time because an extensive microwave network that had been set up by the telephone company, the broadcasters, and other commercial concerns. The TECHNOLOGY at that time allowed people to have quality telephone communications, data communications, and television broadcasting from one side of the country to the other. The Internet back in those days was not even a dream. The microwave system worked pretty good, but was very pricey at that time.
When satellite communication came in, there was a big move to put everything up in the air. This made a lot of sense for television broadcasting. And today that is the principal means of sending television signals around the world. But, optical cable has been coming along very fast. Most major cities now have an optical trunk. The optical trunk can carry much more data than you can put on any satellite. However, it is hard to compare the two technologies because of the cost and the logistics. What that means is, in some cases no matter how much money you have, you just can't do it. Well, that's enough for the history lesson.
At the present time many people think the only way to have Internet SERVICE out in the rural areas is to use a satellite. That is a lot of punk. There has been many things available for all areas long before satellites were put up. Some of these methods may not be exactly what we call cost-effective, but they did work.
A big part of the problem is getting permission from the government to try new technologies and use frequencies that were reserved for other services but were never used. So, it is, to some extent, a political and economical issue. So, that's where we are today. It can be done but who will pay for it.
So here's my point. If you live in a very isolated rural community and you want to have Internet access don't fall into the trap of thinking satellite is the only option you have. There are other options. But to get it you may have to contact other people in your area and form a consensus of what your needs are and what you're willing to pay. Below is a link to a recent news story you might be interested in.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/12/17/politics/main5990170.shtml

Any comments?

There will always be areas of the world, even in the US, where broadband will not be available. That the US government is setting aside $7.2 billion for broadband access is just a drop in the bucket compared to what the phone, cable, and even power companies have spent over the last 20+ years to upgrade their service.

BTW, talking about microwave, but somewhat off the topic, several years ago, I was up a tower at 265' setting up a microwave dish when a jet fighter at probably about 300 MPH FLEW about 50' from me.

Microwave has been mostly replaced by fiber and satellites, but there is still a lot of it out there. If it was an F-14 that was probably me....Quote from: patio on December 30, 2009, 06:58:06 PM

If it was an F-14 that was probably me....
LOL.

I know how the lack of broadband in rural areas limits Internet access for, no doubt, millions of U.S. residents. My younger brother lives on the farm where my parents lived when I was growing up. Even now, his only options are satellite or dialup. Due to the cost of satellite (quite expensive), he's stuck with dialup.

I don't how the federal government plans to spend the $7.2 billion but I'm inclined to think one option would be to just subsidize DSL or cable providers to extend their coverage into areas they would not NORMALLY go due to insufficient population to support normal service. My brother is not really very far from households who can get DSL. So, if the phone company had some incentive to go ahead and add the relay/booster station needed to extend coverage, they could have DSL.

I'm not saying this strategy could be used to entirely eliminate lack of broadband but I think it might a viable approach to add service to many areas considered marginal by normal business criteria for DSL and cable providers.Well, I looked at the article again. Indeed, some money will be spent in the way I just posted.

"The money is being targeted for "last-mile" connections that link homes, businesses and other end users to the Internet; "middle-mile" connections that link communities to the Internet backbone;..."At least you waved as you went by.There are many things more important than broadband.

Solve : Standby Problems?

Sometimes (about 50%) when my COMPUTER comes out of 'Standby' mode, the MONITOR displays 'No Signal'. The monitor is OK at all other times including when coming out of 'Hibernate' mode. Anyone any ideas please?Don't use standby. Instead you can set the display and hd to power down after a defined period of inactivity. Well - as a rule the individual settings in power options are okay, but it's absolutely true that Hibernate & Sleep were simply never perfected by MS and cause problems on some systems.

Actually, they both work fine. it's the HARDWARE manufacturers that make their hardware tell windows, "yeah, I support this feature and that feature" and then windows assumes, "oh hey, it supports this feature" because, you know, it just asked it. Then it goes to use that feature.

Except the hardware only pretends to support it.

If a piece of hardware, when asked, "say, do you support mode?" and the response is, "why YES, I do" is it not then, a safe assumption that possibly using that mode would work?

half of the power management issues that occur are problems with the hardware pretending to support features that they actually don't support, and windows trying to use them.

laptops in general are not as bad with this; since battery life is one of the major selling points, manufacturers make a point of both telling windows they support various power management features in addition to actually supporting them. For desktops, however, low power usage isn't a major selling point so sometimes they just kind of pretend in order to meet certain logo requirements.Quote

Solve : Partial thumbnail drawing in several file browsers when rotated on exif info??

Answer»

Hello everyone, I wasn't sure where to post this question as I'm not sure what the problem is. I've got a weird thing happening with some displays of thumbnails for jpg files in some file BROWSERS where the thumb doesn't show up, or it paints a portion of it (from the top) and then stops. As far as I can see, it is always when the picture is rotated according to the exif flag, having taken it with the camera in portrait orientation. It is intermittent, and is only a proportion of those rotated pics - most show up fine.

The background to this is a lot of testing of explorer replacements, many of which were pretty poor and had to be uninstalled again. I was fairly careful about restarts and made a restore point before I started and at least two more along the way, but I don't know EXACTLY when the problem arose, or even if it's just a coincidence and was there before I started.

I am wondering WHETHER to just restore to the beginning and see if it cures it, but I thought I'd post on a forum or two first in case someone recognises the likely cause. I know restore points are meant to be safe, but my last hdd died completely during one, and I've been more reluctant since. If there's another cause it makes more sense to keep the modifications and updates I've made since and cure it.

I had one curious file in the folder where this is happening, which I rotated as a JPEG lossless operation in irfanview (from being just in portrait with a rotate flag) and this thumbnail shows up in some browsers as stretched to fit a landscape format. It could be like it's got the rotate exif still set, but it doesn't rotate it, just makes it wide and low and thus stretched.

I tried removing that file in case it was somehow corrupting things, and then tried copying the rest of the pics to a new directory in case the directory was corrupted, but they still show the same. At the moment I haven't got a load of pictures on this machine to reproduce the problem elsewhere.

Win XP Home SP3 on Advent 4211I forgot to say that this affects some of the rotated thumbs in a random kind of way - on refreshing the page I'll get different ones missing or partially drawn, and only a handful of them out of hundreds in the dir. A little strip across the top of one will show up, 90% of another, one completely blank, etc.

I should also say that I've had this in two different browsers, although one of them I've uninstalled. The one they're still showing up like that in is Cubic Explorer. None of my others - WE, Powerdesk Pro 5 and some standalone freebies rotate thumbs anyway, and they're drawn fine when not rotated. In Cubic, the preview pane doesn't rotate the image, and even ones that are poorly drawn as thumbs show properly in preview.

If I should ask this somewhere else, please let me know. Thanks.Shameless bump! Hoping someone has some ideas about what to do, as I've updated several things and don't want to go back to a restore point and have to update them all over again.Try This...

It's for Vista but should work for XP too...Thanks very much, patio. Unfortunately that's not it, but probably useful for people like me to be reminded that you can type things into the run dialog instead of fishing for the link! That starts "Disk Cleanup" on XP, and I selected everything apart from compressing old files (life's too short and my hdd is ...eh-hem... massive). Possibly ccleaner or similar might fix it, but I haven't installed that yet on here.

It's something weird to do with the actual "painting" (I think you call it) of the thumbnails. I've discovered that in certain settings in UltraExplorer, particularly when the hovering pointer pops up full information on the file, the EXIF-rotated thumbs go crazy, flickering and being redrawn constantly as I move the mouse around. The landscape ones don't budge (and as I said above, there aren't any problems with how they are depicted at all, just some of the rotated ones don't fully get painted in a random selection kind of a way). If I open a window above the file browser and close it again, which causes a repainting of the thumbs, a different random selection goes wrong. I can also set UE to cache thumbs, and then it just keeps whatever got randomly drawn fully or partially, of course. I wonder if it's a video driver or something that's got corrupted. I guess updating some drivers might be a next step, yeah? Any thoughts from anyone about which, or other ideas, gratefully received. It doesn't seem to be a massive problem, nothing CRASHES and suchlike.

I notice that irfanview thumbs is absolutely fine. I've written to the UltraExplorer designer to see if he's got any ideas.

ETA: Aha, is there a clue there? - both UltraExplorer and Cubic Explorer do this, but irfanview thumbs is fine. It must be something to do with the methods they use for painting thumbs. The issue probably lies with the third party software itself...Quote from: patio on January 17, 2010, 07:05:50 AM

I tend to agree. Sounds like a bug with their DRAWING or loading of images with said EXIF tags.

Solve : Looking for a laptop.?

Answer»

I am not that I'm ASKING you people to go shopping for me. However, if you are willing to do so, I wouldn't mind.

I'm also not asking you people to do some research regarding my queries but if you did so, I really appreciated all the help that I am getting on this forum.

With so many COMPUTER enthusiasts in this forum, I'm sure that in the past, at least one of you MIGHT have done comparison between online prices of laptops and those sold in regular computer shops, in USA. All I'm asking for is that if there are such people here, I would like to know if there are any difference in prices and if there are, which would be cheaper.

The reason I'm asking for this is that I am UNABLE to check the prices of laptops which are sold in regular computer shops in USA. All I have are the online prices and was WONDERING whether I should make a purchase online now, or only get one from the regular computer shops when I've arrived there.

Solve : Creating an XP install disk?

Answer»

Can anyone provide instructions (or a link to some) on how to create an XP install disk?
Medium-Long story:
When I bought my computer (many moons ago), it didn't come with a cd, and we were fine because we never needed a cd. Windows Authenication check (or whatever) cleared the computer after we put in the code on the sticker on the computer case (on the seal). About a year ago I got a new video card installed, but the guy took off my sticker. Once again, I didn't notice/care because I had no need for it at the time.

Now, I'm planning on flushing my computer, give it a fresh start. I used a program called Magic Bean code finder and it worked like a charm, too bad my neighbour's install cd is corrupt and won't accept any code (EVEN the one in UNATTEND.TXT) and I can't get my hands on another cd.

Long story short/TL;DR: Is there any way to burn the required files, etc. to a cd to reinstall the OS/flush the computer?

EDIT: Just tried google. All I got is how to slipstream my xp cd, which will be very useful once I make one lol. Is your hidden Recovery partition INTACT ? ?

Do you have access to another XP CD ? ?

If so PM me.Quote from: patio on January 15, 2010, 07:43:32 PM

Hidden recovery partion? It didn't come with a recovery cd, and no, I don't have access to another cd (KINDA why I said "I can't get my hands on another cd.")If your ASKING if the Windows installation as it is can somehow be assembled into an installable setup file the short answer is NO...You still didn't answer patio's question about recovery partition.

There isn't. The installation software -- on the CD -- uses the installation files -- on the CD -- to build an installation on the target computer. I think you may have toi pony up for a new Windows CD.

Screens can be picked up off eBay/Amazon for LESS than a £80 (dependant on make/model and size).
I managed to fit a new screen myself but would only recommend doing that to someone who is comfortable with computers and electronics. If in doubt visit your local computer store and price up a new screen and fitting.

Have you considered a skilled trade? Many locals are looking for people and as part of the collective agreement pay for your schooling. As a journeyman OE(Operating Engineer) you can easily earn over 130K annually, the same with IW(Ironworker).

The process is simple, they usually require a copy of your school transcript and signing up with the apprenticeship board(mandatory as most trades are considered compulsory trades). They can usually get you working in under a week.

There's nothing like going home at the end of the day and knowing that if you didn't change the skyline, at least you are helping to fill it in.Balatro, I have had no personal experience with the "head hunter" route. However i have have had family members with high end technical knowledge that have. It is my understanding that they do NOT directly charge a fee to the applicant. Fees for their services are paid by the eventual employer to them after the employment begins. Not knowing what country you are seeking employment in i will give you an example from a "google" search that using the query "employment assistance services" produced 35,350,000 hits. The one i am reproducing is from Canada and may not be applicable for you. However it was only the 2ND listing so undoubtedly a more lengthy perusal will probably provide sources in other countries. http://www.canadianbusinessdirectory.ca/category.php?cat=1012
When i was referring to "networking" i actually meant using your association with Friends, family,ex associates from your previous times of employment.
Not knowing the extent of your family responsibilities (which certainly would be a factor in the relocation suggestion) if this is not an issue then try to determine within your country which areas are hiring people and determine if you have family or friends there that could put you up while you search for work. You could always hitchhike to get there or perhaps get a social or government agency to provide you with passage to get there. None of this stuff is easy (as I'm sure you know) but desperate situations often call for desperate actions. Again goodluck, truenorth

Solve : Compaq Laptops? Are they any good??

I was all set to buy a Toshiba Laptop and then I found a Compaq with all the same features for $50 LESS than the Toshiba.

I currently have a 1 year old Toshiba laptop that's perfect. We've had no problems with it at all so we were going to buy another one like it to replace our desktop but we're trying to save money also.

Is it worth it to save the $50 and go with the Compaq? Compaq merged with HP recently so you can consider all Compaq laptops basically as HP laptops and HP laptops are known for their extremely high rate of failure. I'd stick with the Toshiba, but it also depends on which model too.

I think the chart says all you need to know to make a choice.

Charts are nice, but they aren't the be all and end all for computer purchases. They are also rarely accurate. Especially when it comes to something like which company has a better service and uptime track record.I have a Compaq Presario notebook computer that I bought 2 1/2 years ago. Even though I have been satisfied with it, I don't think I'd buy another Compaq. Staples (where I bought mine) and Best Buy have no Compaq laptops at all on their websites now. Newegg.com only lists 3 Compaq laptops. This leads me to believe Compaq is losing market share and may suffer from support from HP.

For the $50 difference, I think I'd go with Toshiba. Actually, if were shopping for myself now, I think I'd lean towards ASUS. I have not owned an ASUS computer but I have two ASUS monitors that give me a favorable outlook on that brand. And, I believe they have a solid reputation in the motherboard market, in which they've been a major player for some years now. Quote from: Ironman on January 10, 2010, 04:05:07 PM

The trouble with any chart like that is the reliability of the data. How random were the samples, how large is the group that was sampled, who COMMISSIONED the samples, were they skewed in any direction either intentionally or UNINTENTIONALLY.

Good point, and it seems somewhat substantiated by the fact that "SquareTrade says it randomly selected over 30,000 laptops and netbooks covered by its warranty plans for the study." Even though "SquareTrade (one of the bigger warranty providers)", it's surely not the only warranty PROVIDER. Indeed, some of the manufacturers surely provide their own warranty coverage rather than use a third-party warranty coverage provider. So, we can't be sure how representative this study is.After reading over this thread and the link provided above it is not easy to come to a clear indication of which is the best choice.
It may be that people who buy an ASUS are people who seldom buy a warranty or if they do they just don't use the warranty for some reason.
It may be that the people who buy an HP and get a warranty are the kind of people that make harsh demands on their computers.

The study does not indicate anything about how Notebooks compare to Desktops.
If more users were aware of the greater value of desktops, they would not buy any notebook if price and reliability were major concerns.

So, in the end, just buy the one you like.

Someday if will fail.
That's why you buy a warranty.
You must talking about an extended warranty, since the manufacturer's warranty does not cost extra. I generally avoid the purchase of an extended warranty. If the manufacturer puts a 1-year warranty on the product, as is commonly done, then my view is that a defect in the product is likely to show up during the first year. And, if it does not, then it's not very likely to show up during an additional period covered by an extended warranty. But, I realize many people may feel differently about this. soybean,
I like your response. Thank you. Thanks for that reply. Many people don't realize that the entire reason manufacturers have an "extended warranty" is to make a PROFIT; they literally find a sweet spot where they can make the biggest profit from the extended warranty period. if they find that 80% of all failures happen around 3.5 years, they can safely go with a three year extended warranty; by the time the failure occurs they will likely be scot-free as the extended warranty will have run out, they still have the money paid FOR the extended warranty, but are no longer on the hook for fixing the failure.

Basically; I think of it this way, similar to the way, I believe, soybean was saying:

the standard manufacturers warranty that you get automatically is basically the initial load; if the device survives this time period, it will almost always pass the extended warranty, which is devised only to make the manufacturer money.

Look at it this way: I have a laptop that was released in 1994. None of the components had been replaced in the meantime. that's 16 years. the extended warranty was 5 years and the warranty from IBM was 3 years, and the device cost 9 grand initially. It only failed last month; why? the battery leaked on the motherboard. Hey, guess what was covered by neither warranty anyway! Battery leakage So even after finally giving up the ghost, the cause would have made it void under either of the original warranties to begin with.

to manufacturers, devising a profitable extended warranty is nearly a science. In this case, they found the most likely cause of failure and excluded it from both warranties, ensuring themselves a substantial profit.

That being said, I wouldn't have needed the warranty anyway. I just bought another one off ebay for 20 dollars. (9 grand to 20 dollars, quite the deprecation).

in regards to the chart, Even assuming it was 100% and fully perfectly accurate when it was made, it was nullified the moment any of those manufacturers released a new product. Also, there is no such this as 100% reliability; all things fail eventually, and the more they are used, the more likely they are to fail. Rather then going by the absolute time from purchase, the chart should go by operating time to failure; It;s fully possible people bought Asus, Toshiba, or other laptops and devices, put them somewhere, powered them on three years later, and they exploded. How would y ou put that down? "three years"? it didn't actually three years as much as it wasn't turned on for three years; turning it on at any point during that three year period would have resulted in the same fireball. Now, that may be an extreme example; but consider that not everybody uses their PCs the same amount; in fact, people who use their laptops more are more likely to spend more on them, and in an interesting twist some of the more expensive, higher quality models are posessed by Asus and Toshiba, a most curious coincidence.BC_Programmer:

BRAVO! You have said better than I ever could my exact thoughts on warranty's and overall product life expectancy....

More people should pay close attention to what you wrote.

But I'm not playing the movie on the VCR. I'm playing the DVD, and it doesn't happen on all of the DVD's.
My MOM doesn't understand this either. This also happens with some of the movies we rent too. Been puzzling us ever sense all this started happening.
The very first time it ever happened, we called Blockbuster and this lady who answered the phone didn't know much, and said to look at the manual for your unit should tell how to do the settings. Which yes, we have looked and not finding anything helpful.
It doesn't happen with all movies because not all movies are filmed with a 16:9 ratio.

The black bars are CORRECT. They are normal. They are how the movie is supposed to be played.

Let it be.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on January 04, 2010, 08:19:27 PM

Yes, we understand that not all movies are filmed that way. That isn't the problem.
Why when we look and compare what it says the format of them should be, it is all the same wording, 1.85:1 widescreen is what it says on the box.
So, it looks like something is wrong with the DVD, that we got a bad copy and need to exchange it for one that works.

How is the movie broken? Is it not playing? All I can suggest is in the FUTURE when buying dvd's look for 1.78:1 or 16:9 . Or, if your TV has black trim, turn the lights off and watch the movie the way it's meant to be watched and you want even see the black lines. If your actually noticing the black lines while watching a movie, you should get a different movie because the one you are watching is not interesting you at all.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on January 04, 2010, 08:48:08 PM

not playing right. chops off parts of their head with the black strips.
actually, I watch tv all the time with lights off due to my health, I have alot of headaches all the time and light hurts my eyes.
I think I finally found the answer your looking for, about the original movie you was asking about I'll Be Home For Christmas .If you look it says 1.85:1 NON-anamorphic . The other movie you listed as reference Jingle All the Way is widescreen anamorphic. Anamorphic vs. Non-Anamorphic DVD, to lose the black lines using non-anamorphic dvd's you will have to adjust your TV settings, not your dvd player settings. OR view using 4:3 ratio which will most likely put lines on the sides.

Solve : Computer classes??

I was just wondering if any knew of any good computer courses online for becoming a computer tech.

Thanks Bunafireman825http://www.professormesser.com/Thanks JJ 3000

How much does a certified a+ computer tech make annually?

I am LOOKING to change careers and like working on and with computers and i am interested in this field.

Thanks Bunafireman825It DEPENDS. Do you want to work for yourself? Do you want to get an IT job? The customer base also plays a factor in the amount you will be able to charge.I wouldn't mind working for myself and most likely would after a little while, but for starters an IT job would have to do.www.cbtnuggets.com - not free, but very much worth it.I like Professor Messor but I wouldn't recommend learning everything from those videos.. There are many important aspects of computing not covered in those videos (A+ is the tip of the ice burg) so I would recommend getting a book WRITTEN by a respected author to add to your studies, but stick to the exam OBJECTIVES, for now, to simply everything. You can download the A+ objectives from: http://www.comptia.org/home.aspx

edit: oh yeah...Keep in mind that there are two exams you must pass in order to become A+ certified....$168 each... You can take them both on the same day or split them up, to study for each one separately.. All other CompTIA exams only require one exam to get certified, I think..

Network +, which I'm going for now only requires passing one exam to get certified, which is a relief..

BrainBench...Would networking be a good career choice if so i may look into itt tech, for a 2 year degree.

If they just unscrewed then get some needlenose pliers and remove them from the end of the cable and screw them back into the back of the video card.

Don't overtighten any of those screws on cables, they should only ever be finger tight.Quote from: Quantos on January 09, 2010, 10:45:16 AM

err... the cable has the screws... not the video card

oh hold on, I see which ones you mean.

I'm not 100% on exactly what happened, but I believe the thumbscrews on the cable itself were snapped off within the screwhole of the SMALL screw on the video card quantos mentioned.

If you have another video card; or any peripheral component, you can remove the small screws from the video card (the ones now containing the busted bits of screw) and replace them with screws from another component.Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 09, 2010, 10:50:36 AM

Don't have flashing images which you click to play, You have say a players with a few numbers at the side and you choose if you need them for your team, if so you just click on them for your team and at the End of week the SERVER adds the % of each team to choose the winner and it does all peoples teams at same time.

However if your not sharp enough to have that little VOICE in your head determine whether you are in fact doing the right thing...or the wrong thing...i will be 1st in line to point out the difference.

End of Rant.I'll try to pick up where Patio LEFT off. I once was motivated to read a book entitled "The wealthy barber". It was written with the principal objective to make everyone that read it very, very, wealthy. (borrowed it from a public library) The basic principal,as i remember it, was that you got rich by sponging off everbody you could. For example your "roof over your head" was someone elses house that you house sat while they went on a trip or WHATEVER. If you did make any income ensure it was always below a level that would not generate income tax. Get the drift? Now if we have a total society LIKE that (which the author proposed should be everyones objective). I have only one question--- who pays the freight? truenorth

Solve : MS comes thru...?

Answer»

I believe i did a writeup awhile BACK on the Launch party hosted by Microsoft in select Cities for WIN7 .

I was invited as a BETA tester and the event had both a morning and afternoon session.
There was a bag of bling included for attendees and a copy of Win7Ultimate...

An extremely well run event and not the standard dry canned presentations that normally occur at these types of EVENTS...so i left pretty satisfied.

Much to my dismay though when i arrived back home and prepared to do a fresh install of Win7 ( i had already bought and installed another HDD ) i opened the package only to find it was only the 32 bit ver.

I sent an e-mail to Microsoft stating my dissappointment but complimenting them on a well run event.

Today in the mail i recieved the Win7 Ultimate 64bit DVD.

Just thought i'd throw this out there to balance things since most of what you hear about MS tends to go to the negative side of the scales...

Kudos to them...Yeah, they may be an "evil corporate conglomerate" but they still GOT there by being good to customers, and they stay there because they continue to deliver products that attempt to meet the needs of their customers. Have I mentioned Excel 5? That was pretty major. Up until then, they had simply assumed everybody did what if tests with their spreadsheets; with some usability tests, they discovered that most people just kepts lists, and hardly ever used formulas. So they added features to make managing lists in Excel easier. And You know what? Excel 5 is pretty much the same as Excel 2003, as far as I can tell; heck, it even has VBA, being that VBA originated with Excel. (word had WordBasic, Access had AccessBasic, Outlook... well, I don't think it existed, And I'm not sure what powerpoint had, and I'm a bit to lazy to fire up my VM just for that.

Now, we have some conspirators among us... I won't name names... who go ON and ON and ON about their evil corporate methods and how they maliciously changed windows to not run on DR-DOS and because of that kicked Caldera right out of the MARKET; but what is being forgotten here is that, at the time, Windows, while pretty popular, was not a necessity. All MS did really was change the decision from DR-DOS or MS-DOS to DR-DOS or Windows? And even then, consider that many PCs came pre-installed with MS-DOS already so saying that that single "malicious" act was what did Caldera in is purely speculation. It's evident that even if windows had continued to run fine on DR-DOS, that Caldera would have been repositioned out of the market by the time windows 95 rolled around; MS was being merciful by making it quick.

Now, that being said, the person who says this is fairly respectable; by which I mean, they are nothing like the 12-year old kids who start a free website that says that IE and microsoft suck and so forth and at the bottom have a "designed for Internet Explorer 7" logo.I've never understood why the US government and the EU have been so concerned, and spent so much time and money going after MS because it bundled IE with Windows. Just because it's there doesn't mean you have to use it. There are a lot of free alternatives. I always upgrade IE to the latest version, but that doesn't mean I have to use it. I use Firefox 99% of the time.

Windows comes with Disk Defragmenter, but I mostly use defraggler. That's just one of the many options people have from using MS add ons.

There are some things with Windows you are stuck with, but that's true of any OS.

Solve : Question about issue with computer?

Answer»

Hello,

I have a Dell LAPTOP that earlier this week was ruined by some sort of liquid, and will not come on, I was thinking the motherboard is ruined, because I've looked in to power supply problems and other things, but, I know my hard drive is fine..... here is my real question

I took the hard drive out, and have purchased a device to hook my existing hard drive into another computer I have. When I download everything off of my hard drive, onto the computer, I know I will be able to keep my Itunes music, however I also have limewire downloaded and when I download songs from that, I transfer it onto Itunes. Now, when I download everything onto the computer, will I STILL be able to salvage my limwire content that is on my Itunes, or will I only have the music I purchased and the music I've ripped from PERSONAL CD's?If the other computer is a desktop, you could actually INSTALL it as a second hard drive. In either case though, you'll be able to access your files exactly as they were stored on the disk. Every single one.yeah now you have a computer with twice the memory Quote from: Juice217 on JANUARY 07, 2010, 06:46:08 AM

Solve : mebibytes and gibibytes?

mebibytes and gibibytes
What is the proper pronunciation of these words?

The spell checker here says they are wrong.
But they date back to 1998.

Does anybody really use these terms?
Well, in the forward of the Image for Windows USER Manual anybody will see a reference to those terms.

Until now, this geek never reread of them.
Was I asleep for twelve years?
use a "G"...Quote

So, when you read about the data storage size convention used by Windows, the units will appear as mebibytes (MiB) or gibibytes (GiB), even though Windows itself refers to the units as megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB).

Image for Windows User Manual Page 5 of 154

the whole mebibytes/gibibytes thing was a why to try to unconfuse users.

If it confused you, then imagine how a average PC user feels.

Originally they had to understand that kilobytes, megabytes, etc were 1024 times the previous amount (1MB=1024KB, 1KB=1024 Bytes etc). And of course, a number of these people DECIDED at some point that this was too confusing. NOO! mega and kilo are metric prefixes! we MUST CLEANSE THE INDUSTRY!

So, they the meaning of MB and KB; you know, the meaning of words that have been used in software applications for nearly 20 years and decided that the new prefixes "mibi" and "kibi" and so forth are the New meanings for the prefixes to mean binary multipliers.

Sure, it's elegant. But it's a little too late now to try to restructure the words used by the COMPUTER industry into something elegant. We use Kilobyte. I call a Kilobyte 1024 bytes. I call a Kilometer 1000 meters. It's not that difficult to understand. But apparently some eggheads decided that we need a standard, with complete disregard for the fact that software has been using these terms and people have been learning them and using them for the previous 20 freaking years.

That being said; remember the PCI Vs VL-BUS thing? VESA was behind VL-BUS... when was the last time you've heard their name? If the SI insists on redefining terms that are ALREADY in use for years they aren't going to be as well respected. the SI needs to respect De Facto standards when they go to make then De Jure; they can't simply redefine what terms used for years mean and actually expect people to give a *censored*.Quote

Solve : godmode?

Answer»

I think it works in vista, defiantly in 7. It has all the settings in one. To do this, GO to your desktop, make a new folder, and call it
GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

don't do this on Vista. it crashes Explorer.

And if that is what it was SUPPOSED to do, it would have been nice to have a little warning, you know, so I could keep the last 2 hours of work I did.

Although, I actually didn't lose anything... but only because I had command prompt open. And it took some doing. I had to manually remove the folder myself. meanwhile, explorer is crashing every time it restarts.

EDIT: OK, it's not supposed to crash, it works in windows 7.

It crashes windows Vista explorer though. Windows 7 "God Mode" Mythbusting

http://wingeek.com/articles/40507/windows_7_quot;god_modequot;_mythbusting/

Quote

The tweak of the day everyone is talking about is the so called Windows 7 "God Mode." Simply create a new folder, call it GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} and you will have a SHORTCUT to every setting on your computer. Sounds great right? The problem is no new features or settings are exposed. Only a list of tasks that can be accomplished within Control Panel that Windows 7 and Vista use for start menu and control panel search.

The feature is not actually even called God Mode but All Tasks. Since the All Tasks feature is simply a shell folder you can access it a few different ways. The most direct method is to open up Explorer and type in shell:::{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} in the address bar and hit Enter. Alternatively, create a folder and name it anything.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}.

At one point during the Windows 7 betas this feature was even exposed to users as All Tasks but hidden in the final releases. That caused me to do some extra editing on the final review of my Windows 7 Tweaks book.

In this CASE someone named the folder GodMode which sounds like a secret feature burried deep within Windows. In reality its just another shell folder. If you need to change a setting simply search for it in the Start Menu. That is what this feature was actually designed for.

Although if you are the kind of person that likes to navigate through a list of 279 tasks instead of simply typing in what you need try out this even better backdoor secretly created by the president of the Windows division. Create a new folder and name it: SinofskyBackdoor.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}.
I dont have vista to test it on, but someone else told me it worked on there. Sorry BC.Yeah, I've seen this all over the web. Sorry, I prefer Control Panel.I reserve godmode for church, not for my computer. Quote
Big Red Warning!

The trick appears to work on both the 32 and 64-bit versions of Windows 7. Vista 32-bit and Windows Server 2008 32-bit should also work. However, it is known to crash 64-bit versions of Vista — and you may need to boot in safe mode or to the command line to delete the folder.

Solve : My computer always freeze, please help.?

I just buy a Nvidia GeForce 8800GT to upgrade my video card for gaming. To be compatible, I upgraded as well my power supply to 500w CAPACITY. Recently it will always freeze and most of the time a blue screen will display saying about dump memory, to update drivers and newly installed softwares to be uninstalled. Before freeze happened, i heard an unusual sound from the inside of my computer.. and oftentimes it will not detect the system hard disk and display a disk boot failure when I restart the machine.. Before I replaced my video card, I reformat my system drive for it to be clean. I have no idea what will I do. I already update the latest driver of the video card but not UPDATED the bios, since I read from other forums that there are risk on UPDATING the bios.

Any idea will be highly appreaciated. What brand of PSU is this ? ?S-TEK

Made in ChinaNo offense but that's probably the issue right there...
Today's machines especially those USING high end gaming vid cards will simply not perform properly on $20.00 PSU's...

I bought this at around $50 dollars (if converted), and i choose this even for the high price cause I want a good performance. Most of the psu available here are made in china.
Btw, my computer freezes even just few seconds after loading windows.

Solve : Email icon on forum profiles?

Answer»

Hello.

I'm sorry if this question is in the wrong place. The email icon that is under my profile, I was wondering, how do I get it to disappear? In other words, I don't want it there. I looked all over the forums help pages, but I don't see an answer. I may have overlooked it, or just don't understand what I was reading. Please forgive me for my ignorance. m(_ _)mYour email icon is shown only to yourself.
As your email is hidden, no one but you and the admin can see it on your profile.
Hope this helps.Hello Calum.

What I mean is links that can be used to email anyone by clicking on it. In other words, If you mouse over it, the email can be seen just above the "Start" button. People can click on it to email you right? I want to avoid this. The icon is to the left of the signature on this page, where you post and reply to OTHERS. I just don't want MINE to be visible.Nobody except you and the admin can see that. I attached a screenshot of what I see.

Yes. And, don't worry about having posted your question. You're not the first person that's asked this question. The email icon can be a bit confusing until you realize how it really works.Hello soybean, Soviet Genius and Calum,
Thank you all for your help.

I truly appreciate the time you took to help me. Thank you ever so much.

INDEED. It does lead to some spam, but I do tend to leave my email public.

First you say "the disk is all ready loaded" but in the next SENTENCE you say "I don't have the disk to reload".

In order for us to have any chance of assisting you we will need to know more about the situation.
Have the printer ever worked?
If yes, when did it stop working?
Have you installed the drivers for the printer?
Do it appear to be installed correct?
What is telling you to "to load disk" and when?

Solve : pc build?

Answer»

i'm looking to build a basic pc 4 my 17year old son.i need to know which componants are compatible with what .i would be gratefull 4 any input thanks.Trev -- welcome!

I think most people would ask what kind of price range / budget you want to observe?

Generally, you'll decide whether you want an AMD processor at the heart of the computer, or an INTEL processor. Certain motherboards and RAM (Random Access Memory) work with certain types of processors. If you've no preference, price is usually the biggest consideration. There are people here who will give you some excellent advice.

Thanks! If you don't need much, get a dell or hp DESKTOP. It's a lot LESS headache if you aren't sure about BUILDING a pc. It will come out to roughly the same price too depending on what you need.

If you really want to build one yourself, check out www.newegg.com for good prices

Also, it will HELP if we knew your price range.
