Solve : emailing address book to another computer?

Answer»

Great. I will try it tonite. Can hardly wait to go home (for many other reasons, too - especially cuz it is snowing like crazy here - close to Youngstown, OH.) Thanks again for your help!Ohio is getting buried right now...1-3 feet in some areas ! !Yep, many counties are under Level 2 or Level 3 Snow Emergency. My mother was scheduled into Port Columbus at 5:20 p.m. today, returning from a VISIT with my sister. I am supposed to pick her up at the airport. CURRENTLY, the flight is delayed. I don't know yet WHETHER she'll actually arrive later today or not until tomorrow. I'm kinda hoping the flight will be delayed until tomorrow. It'll be an inconvenience to her, but I'm not looking forward to driving to the airport today and taking her to her home in Perry COUNTY, which is still under Level 3 Emergency. Solve : usb ports malfunctioning?

Answer»

hi

My son has a laptop and the usb ports arent working correctly. They either connect for a few SECONDS REGARDLESS of what is in them. or they ecome up with
this message

usb ports malfunctioned windows doesnt recognise it.

on closer inspection all 4 ports are quite loose. does anyone know how i can RECTIFY these problems

regards DawnIs this a new laptop? Is it under any kind of warranty or extended warranty?

Forgive my Captain Obvious questions, but if it's under any kind of plan, then perhaps tech support may help.

If not, is there anyone you know who is experienced at working on / inside laptops?hi thanks for your reply no not under any warrinty dont know any one thet works with laptops

regards DawnPlease post the specs of your laptop as other members would need it to give solutions to your problem.

Thanks! Now, when you inform us the USB ports are loose, do you mean that the fixtures themselves wiggle, or that the cable plug in doesn't "want" to stay in the fixture?

I think you're telling us the ports themselves are loose...thank you to everyone that has replied. its the fixtures themselves that wiggle around

i will post the SPEC later when i can find them

regards dawnSome local repair shops will do repairs at board level on computers...but expect it to be a bit pricey on a laptop if you can find someone to do it.

Grand Total:$722.91The motherboard doesn't have raid support, so if you want to add raid to your system in the future, you'll have to buy a raid card. It's not necessary, but a raid0 setup can double hard drive speed.
The motherboard can also support RAM a step up from what you have chosen. You can spend an extra $20 to get the faster ram.
You may want to consider a better video card, at least 512mb, depending on the type of gaming you do.
Personally, I think onboard sound is good enough for everything except for audio recording/editing. I would forget about the addon sound card and get the faster memory or video card.

Looks like a good system overall. Don't forget you need an operating system to go with it.
On top of ML's suggestions i'd look into swapping your CPU up to the Q6600 and see if it will fit in the budget...
Are you locked into Gigabyte for the board choice ? ?

I'm not familiar with the PSU either. Overclockers anonymous does PSU reviews monthly and it's almost overwhelming how much info and testing they do.

Keep in mind that if a Premo system would only be another 150 to 200 $$ that can be saved up in a few weeks if need be.

I tend to buy 2 or 3 components at a time on account of i always spend way beyond my original budget.

I have 60% of my new build sitting under my desk right now...just yellin at me to get finished already. But i know the wait is worth it.

Disclaimer: I am not by chance a heavy gamer...there are far more people on here that are more qualified than myself in that specialty...however i do follow gaming machine layouts because they tend to be nice setups for AutoCad and PhotoShop which i use way more.my personal problem is that I just want everything now basically because I just love computers, right now I'm using a 7 year OLD Compaq and I feel like I'm living under a rock.could you please GIVE us links to newegg for each component? i would like to know the specs of each component and price.

I suggest a better PSU (known brand and some more juice), ditching the sound card as most onboard CHIPS are equal to or better than that one, and either the Q6600 or E8200 CPU instead of that one.
It's not usually worth spending more for faster RAM as the speed isn't usually that noticeable.
I like that motherboard very much and was considering it for my own build.

Have you tried using your WEBMAIL access? (www.mail.yahoo.com)
Sorry I missed this, no they were emails from me and they were just messages nothing attached, I think it must have

Solve : Getting files off hard drive (very old PC!)?

Answer»

I wonder if anyone can help. I have a very old PC which has the operating system windows 95 on it. I have just bought a new compaq laptop and need to transfer my FILES across from my old PC hard drive. I have tried to save the files onto a memory stick and also tried to save onto a CD - rw but unfortunately my old PC doesn't seem to recognise these materials. Can anyone suggest how I can GET my files off my old hard drive. I cannot use a floppy DISK either as my laptop doesn't have a floppy disc drive.

Help!!!!

DebraDoes your old computer has Ethernet card? I KNOW you could network these 2 together... Did you install the driver of the memory stick on the WIN95?

Network the two computers if the WIN95 has a ethernet card...

Debra,
Please state clearly what you want to do here...the Win98 machine will not recognise anything from the new machine as the file systems are different
Win98 = FAT 32 ( cannot see NTFS)
XP/Vista = NTFS (can read anything FAT#@)
So basically your new machine will be able to read anything off the old machine...however tho old machine cannot read anything off the new machine....
More details and we can get you where you want to go.
Let us know ....and Welcome to CH !

Solve : Expanding images?

Answer»

Is there a software or a way to expand images from small to big?Any image software can resize images.
But enlarging an image usually won't look very good. Regarding Deerpark's first STATEMENT - here's one:

Popular, powerful, lots of OPTIONS, etc.
Free.

Regarding Deerpark's second statement - it is correct.
But, since Irfanview is free, your best bet WOULD be to try it. If you only need to enlarge a small amount, MAYBE the results would be satifactory to your eye.

Solve : what do i need in a laptop?

Answer»

I'm a truck driver and i want a laptop to take on the road. I don't know what kind, speed or memory size would be right for me. I need a Navigation device (eg. Rand McNally), be able to check my e-mail, and able to pick up WI-FI @ flying J. Our home computer has Norton and we are happy with that. Can you get that on a portable? Also I'd like to be able to put the pictures that I take with my phone (Motorola- razor) on the computer, and put a CD of eg. Hoyle card games - or other games. What do i need in a laptop?Well, if buying a new laptop, you'll surely be getting Windows Vista; there are five versions of Windows Vista. I think Vista Home Premium would be fine for you. With Vista, be sure to get a computer with at LEAST 1GB of memory. And, 2GB may well be worth paying a little more.

Nearly all new laptops come with built-in Wi-Fi; just be sure to confirm that before you buy. In other words, they are capable of picking Wi-Fi signals without installing/attaching any additional hardware.

Sure, Norton can be installed. A new laptop may have a trial version of Norton already installed. But, I suggest avoiding Norton and getting AVG Anti-Virus Free or Avast Home Edition. Norton is too much of a resource hog.

Regarding installing games, sure, you can do that. All you need is a DVD-ROM drive, which a new laptop is sure to have.

In summary, since your requirements are actually fairly basic, most laptops on the market would meet your requirements. So, you can stay in the lower end of the price spectrum if you want to keep the cost down. Quote from: backroads on March 01, 2008, 08:17:26 PM

... Also I'd like to be able to put the pictures that I take with my phone (Motorola- razor) on the computer, ...

I have no experience with this myself. A friend of mine does it all the time.
As I understand it, with his cell phone service, if he emails a picture out of his phone to himself, he has to pay a charge for it.

But, just recently, they got a new laptop. This one has built in Blue Tooth capability. The OLD one did not. This laptop can communicate with his cell phones! Now, he can access the photos in the phone, and simply copy them straight to the new laptop via Blue Tooth.

You might want to look into it. Maybe Blue Tooth on laptops is standard stuff now - I don't know.

Sorry that I can't be more specific about it. I just wanted to call your attention to the possibility - maybe soybean or someone else here with experience with this will comment.
Bluetooth is available on many multimedia laptops nowadays.
However, a more reliable and faster way would be to use USB - the cable may have come with the phone or it may be sold separately (roughly £5 here). Alternatively, if the phone uses a memory card, the laptop COULD have a built in card reader, which is another way to transfer files.Quote from: Calum on March 02, 2008, 12:41:39 PM

I don't remember the details, but there was some difficulty with that. It sounded to me like the phone company was trying to make it so that the only option was to have to pay to send them. I'm really not sure though.

One thing is sure, when I saw him do it with Blue Tooth, it was very convenient. No looking for a wire! Just curious, how can someone mobile (on the road) connect to the internet?

I saw that. $20 a month is not too much more than DSL plans.

Here is what is interesting though. As I understand it, many hotels now offer wi-fi for free - an amenity for businessmen and vacationers.
Yet these places charge the truck drivers for it.

In one market they need to offer it as an attraction, to get more business.
In the other, it is a way to generate more revenue.
Interesting how that works.

A Flying J is located only about 7 miles from where I live. Besides selling the diesel fuel that truckers need, it has a nice restaurant and small retail store that sells various items, and a large parking lot where truckers who stop to sleep overnight in their cabs can park.

We also have Panera Bread restaurants in my AREA. They are Wi-Fi hotspots and charge nothing for access. I would have thought Flying J might do the same for truckers.Hey, do you think Backroads is on the road again or something

Solve : mac cloning and arp cache?

Answer»
Hi
mac cloning is one method that the attcker use to change his mac to another mac by simple command as in linux can change the mac. the arp cache read the original mac from the bios when pc startup. this cache is read write then why the attacker can change the mac. i think if can change arp cache to read only the attacker can not change his mac and we can prevent from mac cloning but i do not know if i can change the sitting of arp cache to read only. and why this cache put as read write. any body can help me please What are you trying to accomplish here?
Are you trying to prevent computers you manage from changing their MAC address? If yes, why?not to derail the thread, but i converted the binary in your sig deerpark and i must say...huh?It's a reference to my old avatar/sig.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Spaghetti_Monster
I am studing spoofing methods and searching for new method to prevent from arp spoofing espically to mac cloning while the attacket change his mac address.Considering an attacker will usually be using his own computer, how did you envision write protecting the ARP cache on a computer he has full control over?
There are plenty of tools out there designed for detecting ARP poisoning. I think this is the way you NEED to go because it isn't feasible to prevent computers you have no control over from changing their MAC addresses. I miss FSM..... As long as you hold His Pastaness in your heart he will never truly be GONE. I think you do not understand me. i do not search about how can prevent my pc from mac cloning .i am seraching for universal solution if we change the cache that contains the mac in os then nobody can change his mac and then mac cloning can prevent
i hope you understand meSorry that i can't help but thought of responding here since i had a "arp cache" issue that has just arisen and i posted here in "other" not knowing what kind of issue this is but have had zero responses.

There is nothing in any of my messages that mentions the "mac address" but mentions the network administrator or person who manges my network to CLEAR the "arp cache".

Can what is happening to me be similar to what is happening in your case?

i did a google search and found some information about dumping the "arp cache", but following the instructions given results in another MS warning sound and a message which as often happens makes little or no sense to me what-so-ever.

Good luck with finding an answer to you question. i'll KEEP my eye on this post to see if anything seems relative to my situation.First of all, changing one's MAC address can be useful in network diagnostics so disabling that ability is a bad idea.
Second of all, there are 1000s of operating systems out there, it would be impossible to make them all agree to disable the feature.
Third of all, even if somehow all operating system did agree on this many operating systems are open source. So anyone COULD make a patch and re-enable the ability to change MAC addresses.

The real problem here is that the current internet architecture was never meant for the kind of use it is seeing now. It was never designed with security in mind for example, the internet did start out as a trusted network after all.
ARP spoofing is one of the symptoms of these problems. I don't think anything less than a complete rethinking of how the internet is supposed to be structured is really going to fix this.Deerpark,

"I don't think anything less than a complete rethinking of how the internet is supposed to be structured is really going to fix this."

Agreed. But who is left with the task of doing that?

It occurs to me that the same thing could be said about government.

Solve : Hardware? Software? PC? Network? cha cha cha?

Answer»

Got a message about contacting "my network administrator" to clear my "arp cache"

I was in an internet cafe and once i got that message i could no longer access anything online. Others using their COMPUTERS didn't have the same problem.

I have a Gateway laptop with an AMD 64 XP 1 gig of ram.

When i got home i was able to to access the NEIGHBORS wifi. Just moved to a new house and have no connection of my own.

So is this a hardware, software, PC, or network problem? What can i do if i want to use the cafe's internet?

If this makes any difference i also got a ieexplorer.exe still running notice everytime i TRIED to reboot...had to click "end now" four times for the computer to finally turn off. i've been using firefox so what's up with the ie.exe running message?

The other thing that is new is a new version of spybot that i really didn't want but it updated when i ran it for the first time in 3 weeks. The fact that your able to use his means that its unprotected, its a hardware thing if your pc is SETUP to use wireless it will detect other wireless signals close to it. It depends on how far away it is. You should be able to connect depending on the strenght of there signal. You mite have some spyware or other maleware causeing the explore problem. Scan the pc the fact that spybot updated isn't a bad thing unless you want spyware and such it only updated cause it hasn't been. PROTECTION programs aren't going to do you much good if you dont run them.To clear the ARP cache right click the wireless connection icon in the notification area (next to the clock) and select repair.
The cache is also cleared on reboots so you most likely won't have any problems when you return to the internet café. Using "repair" did not work. Rebooting the computer did not fix the problem. When i got home there was no problem with the wireless at all.

There is an answer that i found doing a Google search that says there is a problem in some versions of XP that do not allow the arp cache to empty. The same post gives instructions on how to do it manually. After following the instructions i discovered that the problems of yesterday persist today...kinda a metaphor in many ways about life itself.

When the game is lagging can you BRING up Task Manager and see if atievxx.exe and cli.exe are using up 30%-50% of the cpu?

I've noticed that periodically on my LAPTOP which has the 512mb Raden x1600 w/Hypermemory that sometimes those two processes DECIDE to go nuts and eat up my CPU. I kill them and the issue goes away. I've YET to have any ill effects from KILLING the processes either.Quote

Well im glad you asked WillyW.

Incredimail is incredible LOL.!!! I love it.

You mean you havent heard of it? Its so fun to use. Its more fun than Outlook or Thunderbird. Youve got pictures, animated chubbicons,(very big and new emtoicons) very cool and cute notifiers, backgrounds, sounds and 3d animated effects. Plus so much more!!

Check it out if u like. www.incredimail.com

Yes I love it. lol. Incredimail is actually a minor adware program.

It will change your homepage and constantly redirect you there on startup. Also, there have been reports of it possibly collecting your email address to send you an "Upgrade to Gold" message.

Quite a few people have said some negative things about it.

From what I am reading, it seems to be mostly safe, as in: Its not REPORTING valuable information and its not excessively advertising on your COMPUTER.

In my personal opinion, Emoticons that are the size are a nuisance...

HI Zylstra

nothing of that sort has happened to me at all. My computer is configured pretty well. And now guess what? I have 3 email clients (OE 6, Mozilla Thunderbird, and Incredimail) and I have configured my free hotmail address to work perfectly in all 3 of them.

I spent a whole lot of time trying to figure out what outgoing server I needed for the free hotmail address, eventually I figured that I didnt need the hotmail one I could use any good outgoing server.
So I hope its ok now.

Hotmail/MSN/LiveMail use an HTTP connection, not SMTP, IMAP, or POP3.

The mail server that you would connect to (after selecting HTTP connection) is:

Zylstra, the link you provided isnt working. Anyways, In incredimail and OE 6 for my free hotmail account, Im actually using the outgoing server from my account that I got when I signed up with my internet service provider. Im using "localhost" for my incoming server and the outgoing server from the ISP email account. So its working fine, and its much more secure.

I recently made a forum of my own and I am having a hard TIME getting PEOPLE to sign up and stay active.
Does ANYONE have any tips to get members to join and post? The most important thing is to offer relevant, regularly updated content.
That PROVIDES an incentive to join.
Also, you need traffic - focus on improving search engine rankings, link exchanges are a good way to do this.
Also, linking to your site on other sites you are a member of, e.g. setting it as your homepage on this forum, will increase traffic.
There are many more WAYS to get more members, but relevant content, a decent site layout, and a core of active members are the only things that will persuade members to register and stay active. You could always post the link and await comments!

Solve : mp3's on a dvd blank?

Answer»

can i make a mp3 dvd for play on the dvd player ?

better sound on the dvd player than a stereo & can fit more mp3's on a dvd blank

dvd blanks are cheaper

i use ashampoo burning studio 7, that will play on any dvd or cd player , will record all songsIt sounds like you NEED to burn the mp3 files to a DVD-ROM or a DVD-RW disk as a data disk. If your DVD player supports folders you can put 1 album in each folder. I have done this with Nero.
Make sure your DVD player supports reading MP3S from a DVD. I have seen DVD players that only supports reading MP3s from CDs, I kid you not! Yep, it seems that MANY DVD players do not support MP3 DVD playback.

http://www.mp3ondvd.com/

As Deerpark suggests, check the playback compatibilties of your DVD player first.Guess so. Mine does, I bought it in 2002, I just supposed that all modern DVD players support mp3s on DVD.
What's the make & model of your DVD player? It's an Ellion DVX-520cAlthough your player supports MP3 playback, there's no mention if that's just for MP3 written to CDR.

I'd try burning just a single MP3 first, just to test.I'm not the guy who asked the question!

Solve : scam,s?

Answer»

A FRIEND of mine has found out that someone is sending e-mail,s using her address and account how is this possibleFaking the email address an email appears to originate from is actually incredibly easy, spammers do it all the time. There honestly isn't a whole lot you can do about it, it is just as easy as writing a fake return address on a letter.
The only way you can effectively prevent someone from sending emails in your name, is to sign your emails with a digital SIGNATURE. Such a signature cannot easily be faked. This method however, REQUIRES the recipients of emails have software installed that can verify the signature, so it is more bothersome.

Being able to send emails that appears to be from your friend and having access to her email account is not the same THING. You can fake the address without account access.
If she believes someone has access to her account she should change her password (and any password recovery questions) ASAP!

P.S. For future reference please don't post in the FAQ section of the forum. This section is only for guides, not questions.
I'll ask a moderator to move it so you don't NEED to create a new thread.

Solve : February monthly poll?

Answer»

Sorry for the really late poll this month. For the month of February we thought it would be interesting to SEE how many of you actually restart your computer when Windows or the operating system you're using recommends you restart to make all changes take effect.I voted "Never UNLESS required". I just can't be bothered saving my data, closing every PROGRAM I have running and rebooting just to install one application.Never unless required.
It's rare that a reboot is actually necessary, so I don't reboot unless I know I need to, or unless I want to.As a carry over from the old Win95/98 days i always re-boot after the following:

Diskclean
Defrag
Running malware apps
Software installation
Software removal
Adding/removing new devices.

Although many say this is unneccessary on newer versions of Windows i still do it.
Guess i'm a creature of habit but it keeps things smooth.I will sometimes, when I know I actually need to (THOUGH, thats not necessarily only when its absolutely required)
Eg, some Windows Updates, driver updates, etc. Also, when I am not doing anything important. FireFox just saves my data for me, and, well, if I am not chatting, no sense bothering with that, same for email.

As for new devices, if I am using a computer under Windows XP, out of habit, I never restart (thats any plug and play devices)

Never unless required.Yes, I always do, due entirely to the fact that I don't know any BETTER!When It starts up I have to wait forever for my computer to decide it wants to run without slowing down.I voted sometimes I only ever reboot if it is absolutely necessary to do so

so dell give more speed.... also real cor2duo proc. should hav 800 fsb...
but in tat lap proc clock speed is 1.4 ghz...

what i know is tat speed is depend on tat clock speed and not on fsb....

so wat role fsb play...

and cost increase due to clock speed or fsb....First of all I think you need to have your h key replaced, it appears to be broken.

The main purpose of the FSB or front Side Bus is to connect the processor with the main MEMORY aka RAM and AGP / PCI Express graphics card bus.
So generally SPEAKING, the higher the FSB the faster access can be to memory and graphics hardware.
That's just one side of it THOUGH. In order to fully utilize a fast FSB the other hardware component also need to be working at the same clock speed. If you have a processor and motherboard that supports a 800 mhz FSB you're only going to see the full performance with RAM working at 800 mhz as well.

This guy was trying to sell you a Dell huh?
Never trust a WORD that man say ever again, because he is either completely INCOMPETENT or flat out lying to you.
Not all Dells run with a 800 mhz FSB and all other laptops doesn't have 667 mhz FSB. It completely depends on the motherboard/processor combination. There are plenty of non Dell laptops with 800 mhz FSBs and some even faster. I believe the fastest Core 2s supports a 1600 mhz FSB, but I'm not sure those have been made in a laptop version.

My settings are:

Server settings

server type = IMAP
server name = imap.aol.com

use secure = never
use secure authentication = unchecked

Outgoing server
description = AOL Account
server name = smpt.aol.com

I was just browsing around in the Thunderbird forums. I don't remember seeing your specific problem with AOL mentioned, but I wasn't LOOKING for it either.
You might want to have a look around there.
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=39

Usually, right after an upgrade, people post there about failure to connect, etc., and often the first recommendation is to check the firewall.
Could your firewall be blocking the new version of Thunderbird?

Hello WillyW, thanks for your reply.

Quote from: WillyW on February 28, 2008, 11:58:56 AM
Just upgraded?

No, first time user.

I've registered/posted in the forum you suggested, thanks for that.Aha... when I tried it with the AOL email account that I have my broadband connection registered to, it worked, however it's my wifes email address so it's not much use to me GRRRRRRRRR!

The AOL email account that I am trying to recieve emails from using Thunderbird is an AOL account that I set up online through AOL's website (like gmail, hotmail etc).

Basically, when you join AOL they give you a master screen name (email address) of which you can add different email accounts to using their software, but I don't have the software installed because it never worked & I use Firefox anyway.

I just called AOL to see if they can add a screen name to my existing account & they say it can only be done through the software installed on my computer, unbelievable!

Another thing I find unbelievable is that I have found no documentation with REGARDS to the 2 different types of AOL accounts, it's like this has never happened before? to anyone!!!

Is AOL & Thunderbird so unpopular that no one has come across this problem enough to WARRANT a mention in the setup guides on AOL/Thunderbird?

So, my question has now changed:

Does anyone know of any email service that I can use with Thunderbird to send & recieve emails through?

Can be anything that works....

Anything....

Even something like @sh*t.com

gmail works great in TBird...even multiple accounts.Hey buddy, thanks, I'm on it.........Quote from: neljan on February 28, 2008, 02:40:27 PM

Very active forums. Lots to be learned there. You'll like it.
If you use Firefox, its forum is there too.

Regarding your other question above:
(in case anyone else is reading along)

Thunderbird can work with a lot of different email accounts.
I use it with Hotmail, Yahoo, and Gmail.

Patio's recommendation of Gmail is probably the best choice - easiest to set up, less to fiddle with and thus less to continue to fiddle with as they 'upgrade'.
Check out:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_Gmail_with_Thunderbird_and_Mozilla_Suite

Further, you might like to visit:
http://webmail.mozdev.org

I see AOL listed there! Never really paid it any attention before, as I've never subscribed to AOL. So I have no experience with using their AOL extension.

They do a good job with providing clear instructions though.

Let us know if you ever try their AOL extension, and how well it works.

Hey guys

That was strange, I found Mozdev & was setting it all up just as WillyW suggested it.

I managed to get gmail working fine (thanks Patio) but I didn't like the @googlemail.com domain - too long. If I could have had just gmail I would have.

So I've now set up Thunderbird to recieve my 4 hotmail accounts instead (AOL still didn't work Willy - got a 'password sending failed' message this time).

Anyway, everythings sorted now so thanks for all your help...

Do you know if this Mozdev is a trial?

I remember I used freepops before, after 30 days the 'free' part turned out to be a load of BS.Quote from: neljan on February 28, 2008, 10:41:23 PM

You are referring to the two add-on extensions, right?
You probably have Webmail 1.3.1 and Webmail Hotmail 1.2.14
when you look in Thunderbird's Tools->Add-ons.

Those are what I use for Hotmail. Have been for a while now.
Originally downloaded from http://webmail.mozdev.org/installation.html

They are free.
I think you can even get the source code, if you want it.

Here is what to expect though - this is the down side.

Microsoft periodically 'improves' something on their end with Hotmail.

This breaks the extensions' ability to send and/or receive your Hotmail email.
The developer MUST wait until he either receives a good log from someone, or until his own Webmail quits working. His might not break until days after yours does.... MS has more than one Hotmail server and their 'improvements' do not get to all their servers at the same time.

There will be a flurry of messages in that forum. There is also a thread dedicated just to the Webmail extension. When it gets too long, they start a new one.
It is not something that is ignored for a long time. Not at all. The developer seems to always get right on it, as soon as he has what he needs to work with.
If ever you think it is broken, check that forum.

Then he releases a beta.
See: http://groups.google.com/group/thunderbird-webmail-extension/files
(You might want to bookmark that. By the way, I see something there that looks like AOL stuff, dated just yesterday! )

He'll wait a couple days for some people to test and comment. When he feels it is all good, he does whatever he does such that your software is auto-notified that a new release is available.

You can upgrade either with the built-in automatic way online, or go to either the web page or google group page and download the file, then import it from your drive.
It is not a bad idea to grab a copy and keep it on your drive, just in case the next time an upgrade comes out, you have trouble with it. If you have a copy of the previous .xpi file, you can easily drop back a version. I've done this, when the 'old' version was not completely broken.

I have had the window pop up and tell me that there is a new version available and never had a problem. Still worked fine.
Other times, I've gotten failures, checked the forum, seen what was going on, and waited it out. If you don't know what to expect, it is worse. If you do, it is a minor pain in the *censored*.

Since (so far) gmail doesn't require an extension, this is why I commented earlier that I agreed with patio's suggestion. You never have to upgrade the extension because it is broken.
There is an extension available for gmail, but I've forgotten why, since it is not necessary to use it to send/receive using gmail.

I'm glad you've got a solution that is working for you now.
Mate that is really useful & very important to know. A lot of people wouldn't have bothered to take the time to EXPLAIN in such detail as you have so thank you very much for your time - I really appreciate the heads up (no doubt saved me a few headaches in the future aswell).

hmm.. 50/50 I'd say. Half the time an update comes out and the old version was still working fine. The other half of the time that a new update comes out, it was because MS broke things.
That's just an estimation based on gut feeling. I haven't tried to track it.

How often do updates come out? It varies.
Looking back through my copies of the update files... looking at the file dates for what that is worth:

I see one dated Jan 28 2008.
Prior to that, Dec 4
Then Nov 13
Then Nov 2 . I seem to remember this time. This might have been a time when it was broken.

Then Sep 25
Then Sep 14
Then June 13

Go to: Thunderbird Tools->Options->Advanced->Update
See:
Automatically check for updates to:
Thunderbird
Installed Add-ons

I check both 'on'.

I have had the notice pop up, that a new version of an add-on is available.
If memory serves me correctly, it happens when Thunderbird is loading - not later after you have Thunderbird up and running.

I seem to think that I have also found the new version by checking it myself manually. Perhaps the auto-notification doesn't work 100% of the time, or perhaps I was typing something else and didn't see it, and accidentally closed it. I really don't know.

What I do, is not worry about it. Some day it will hit me, "Gee, it seems like it has been a good long time since I clicked on that thing to check to see if there were any new versions. I'll do that right now."

By the way, if (when) it fails one time to connect, etc., don't assume that it is "broken". I think MS has little hiccups often with hotmail. It doesn't even phase me if it fails. I just click it again, and go about my business.
If it fails consistently, over a period of time.... that is when I start wondering.
First thing to check is to be sure that I didn't phat phinger the password!

Did you check out that file with yesterday's date on it, at the Google Group for the Webmail developer?
I'm wondering if it is newer than whatever you were trying, and if it would get you going with your AOL stuff.

lol phat phinger it!

Nuh, I'm not gonna bother with AOL now, I'm happy atm - we'll see how it goes...

A virus can't destroy a hdd sector, it could at most overwrite it. If it overwrote the first sectors it would make your computer unable to BOOT but in most cases this could easily be repaired without any loss of data by reinstalling the boot loader.

Boot sector viruses are btw. probably the oldest type of virus and is all but extinct today.

I think the question about 'the worst virus' is impossible to answer without a more precise definition of worst.
To my knowledge, no virus have yet done any unrecoverable hardware damage. The only one that have come CLOSE was the Chernobyl virus that could wipe the BIOS on some motherboards. But even then the BIOS could simply be reflashed and the computer would be up and running again.
So if you by worst, mean most damage to a single computer the title will go to all the viruses that have tried to delete data. I'm guessing this is well over a 1000 viruses.

If you by worst mean the virus that have made the most damage in term of money (i.e. loss of revenue, productivity, cleanup and so on) the title probably belongs to the ILOVEYOU worm. (Which technically isn't a virus at all). It is estimated the total cost for businesses was upwards of 5 - 10 billion dollars.

destroying the hard disk

What does the ILOVEYOU worm do to an infected computer? Where did it originated? And how did they counter it? Thanks! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ILOVEYOU

It overwrote files such as pictures, documents and music with copies of it self.

It apparently originated from the Philippines and was written by a young computer student called Michael Buen.

The virus spread via email. The recipient of such an email was ENTICED into opening the mail and clicking the attached file (the actual worm) because it said "I love you" in the subject field of the mail. Once a user was infected the worm send I love you messages to all the user's stored email contacts. The worm created such huge volumes of emails that many large companies and governments had to shut down their email servers.
Shutting down email servers was step one in countering the worm since it prevented further spreading.
After that it was countered in the same way most malware is countered. Crafty individuals and Anti-virus vendors created software that could detect and remove the worm.Quote from: Deerpark on February 25, 2008, 10:21:50 AM

Solve : Reactivate Motoral??

Answer»

I have a MOTORAL V180 it says that its an unregistered sim. But this phone was activated an in use. If I try calling out like 611 it will say call failed.Have had a similar PROBLEM my self.
You most likely need a new SIM card. But contact your provider and ASK them, if they agree you should get a new one WITHOUT it costing you anything. Is this cause you dont use the phone for so long.Hard to say why, sometimes SIM cards just die.Why do I still have my settings? Don't it store them to the card? It's probably not totally dead, just defective then.
Just call your phone provider and ask what they think already.
We can't fix your sim card or phone anyway.I know that, justed wanted to make sure of what was wrong

Solve : What do you think of this one??

Answer»

So I wanted to have my very own pc for a long time for several reasons. Schoolwork, gaming, the FACT that my sister won't be able to get access to my pc (probably the most important one ), and several other reasons. I was thinking about saving money for this one. I've sent my curriculum vitae for a job that will pay me €200,- once a month . I just want your opinion about this baby here (awwwwww, it's a boy ). Well, what do you think?

http://www.pc4everyone.nl/product_detail.php?pid=113O yeah, this is the system information.

- Intel Pentium IV
- 2.4 GHz Processor
- 512MB + 512 MB for free!!
- CD-Rom
- 40 GB Harddisk
- 17 inch TFT Flatpanel
- USB/Sound/Network
- Windows XP as OS
- 1 year of warranty

Total price: €379,-...I don't think that's a good deal to be honest.
I don't really know European pricing, but that's £285 in my money.
For only a tad more, here at least I could build myself, or buy pre-built, a better PC than that one.I have to say don't think it's a good deal either. If you spend a bit more I believe you could get a lot more value for you money. Where I live we have a lot of online shops that sells systems they assemble themselves. These are usually very good value for money compared to BRAND name computers. And in the cheap end they are often so cheap that you can't even build one yourself that's cheaper.

secondedMaybe you're right guys, but I don't have much money to spend. Plus the fact that I don't know the better parts for my computer. Still, I'm willing to save more money for a DECENT pc. Start with a budget of what you can spend...

Solve : McAfee Site Advisor uninstalls itself...?

Answer»

I've been using Site Advisor for a LONG time, and couple of days ago, no matter which site I went, it displayed its tab in gray only, and its options were not working.
After some digging, I found out, that apparently its server was down. That's fine.
Next day, it was working again, but a new problem arised.
When I START Firefox, Advisor is missing from add-ons list. I reinstall it, and next time I start my computer, it's gone again.
It doesn't go MIA after FF RESTART, just when I restart computer. Then, I have to reinstall it again.
I did some search, and I can see some POSTS about IE LATELY problems with Advisor, displaying its tab in gray, or causing some errors, but nothing about FF.
I wonder, if anyone else has been having similar problems.Just in case, someone is having same problem...
I fixed it, by uninstalling Advisor from Add\Remove, and installing a fresh copy. Uninstalling it just from Firefox didn't solve the problem.

Solve : Mapping a distant drive?

Answer»

Hi,

I need to map a distant drive as a drive letter visible from my XP machine, so I can copy and create files to and from that distant drive without the bother and delay of FTP. Can I do this, knowing the IP address of that distant machine?

It may be that it's part of the VPN or VNC abilities? If only the clever software PEOPLE who named these acronyms weren't so clever and hadn't thought of nearly identical names for very different functions.

many thanks, anyone! If you are using a VPN connection, you will have to connect first then:

You can map the remote drive by "right click on My computer, and select "map network drive". Then either browse to find the drive or enter the info in the FORMAT:
\\server\sharename
or
\\192.168.10.10\sharename

You can also enter these commands from a CMD prompt

net use * \\192.168.10.10\sharename

Your connection speed will not be any different the an ftp connectionIf for some reason the system doesn't allow you to map a drive to it you can use the very neat trick located here http://www.astahost.com/info.php/map-ftp-server-as-drive_t7292.html to map an FTP server as a network drive.

Solve : IBM Thinkpad question?

Hello,
I have a rebuilt IBM Thinkpad T30 that I GOT from a friend. Well, when I hit the power button all I get is:
beep
beepbeepbeep
beepbeepbeep
beep

blank screen but it makes noise like it WANTS to BOOT up.

I went to the IBM WEBSITE and the codes supposedly mean problem with DIMM or system board.
What does that mean? Do I need to replace the memory or what do I need to do to fix the problem?
Can any of you help me?
==============================================================================
Beep Symptoms Symptom or error FRU or action, in sequence

One short beep, pause, three short beeps, pause, three more short beeps, and one short beep.
DIMM.
System board

The beep codes indicates it's either problem with the RAM or motherboard.
The only way to test what's broken is to FIND some compatible RAM modules and try them instead of the ones currently installed.

Solve : computer enclosures -diy?

Answer»

I heat my HOUSE by wood, which means we get a lot of dust inside ( & worse I e'spect!) I know you can buy metal enclosures to keep the dust out, but at $800/£400 a time I think maybe its not so difficult to build one........ so does anyone have experince of doing this? I'm a cabinet maker , also with some experience of metalwork so I, m not so concerned about how to construct an enclosure, more about how to size it? prapps there's some formula or rule-of thumb to do with how much heat can PASS through a certain amount of surface area??

Any thoughts on this subject welcome.

GeoffThe number one problem you will have enclosing a computer is simply the fact that you are not LETTING air exit.
You can make a cabinet out of wood and place a computer inside it if you wanted to, go to the store or look online at some enclosures and see how they allow air to exit.
If you can figure out a way to duplicate that affect, you could try it, but be sure to monitor the internal temperature of the computer using a program that can read CPU, Memory, GPU, and HDD temperatures, as well as the temperature inside the cabinet itself.

The ultimate solution would be to place the computer in a room where there is little to no dust.

We also heat a part of our house with wood, but have never had a dust problem. Are you using a wood furnace/stove or an open fireplace?
Yep its an airtight box stove, but there always seems to dust, maybe not only from the woodburner, and a very hairy dog who likes to spread it around (his hair, that is: Poor beggar got neutered before he came to live with us, so there's not much else to spread!)

Most of the commercial enclosures seem to go down the metal box + fan + filter road. I want to AVOID that because I'd like to cut down on noise (I do some music recording - try Sam Holman 'unborn' on youtube if you're curious; I'm the old guy mucking about with the mike stand). I thought that a metal box might act as enough of a heat sink to forget about the fans. Could even put some internal & external fins on it.

I thought I got notified when someone replied; better check on that.......You could attempt without the fans, but, get software for monitoring the internal temperature of your computer, like Speedfan http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php (I dont recommend you try any of the overclocking features... thats moreover for advanced users)

See what your computer runs at normally, and then see what it runs at in a cabinet.

The problem with a metal box is that, yes, it will act as a heat sync, but, if nothing cools the metal, then the metal will just sit conducing heat. Because of this, possibility of heating up over time might occur. Be sure to monitor it, checking it every so often. (Just in case)

Neat recording, its hard to find high quality recordings of people who dont belong to some overly popular famous band.

One of my personal favorites:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vS0QjEeNYpM
I don't have any experience building my own enclosures. However, there are some companies that have products for this, e.g: http://www.dustshield.com/

You could examine some of their products to get ideas in building your own.

As Zylstra mentioned if you do build such an enclosure you need fans or some TYPE of method of drawing in cooler air into the box and then blowing the hot air out.

If you do happen to build one, we'd all like to see pictures when it's done.

Solve : Video Converter?

Answer»

hi friends, i have some important video cassets which i want to convert in to digital format. so pls tell me what hardware i should use to connect, the VCR to notebook for best perfomance. THANKS Hello!

Well you'll need a card that is capable of doing video capture. "Video In," or sometimes called VIVO.

BTW, what's your notebook's brand and model? Im not sure but I think your manufacturer will have some kind of documentation or recommendation regarding video capture...A better option (imo) is to connect your VCR to a stand alone DVD recorder then rip the DVD's to your laptop after.

If you record directly to your laptop your going to be USING up your laptops resources (video recording TAKES up CPU/memory) & you will basically be just watching/waiting for it to finish.

But, if you want to record directly to your laptop, like Jerry said you need to find out if your laptop has 'video in'. If it doesn't, instead of buying an expensive video card you could try something like a USB video capture device like these.

I've never TRIED them but that's the route I'd take if the DVD recorder option was out.

Solve : Employers and email?

Answer»

Is it possible for my employer to get copies of or read my email from my personal yahoo account if I sign onto it from work and if so how would I know it? Lately, it seems that when I SEND an email from my yahoo account (from my workstation) it is delayed by a day or two or I get failure messages that the recipient took too long to respond. My employer reads all emails to and from company accounts but can he read my personal email as well? We are using Window XP Professional Ver 5.1 and roadrunner for internet service. The internet ACCESS goes thru the roadrunner modem and a linyx routerIt is possible. HOWEVER, not very likely. Most corporate setups are used to simply monitor and manage intranet e-mail (mail sent through the companies mail server). Because Yahoo is an online service mail sent and RECEIVED does not go through your companies server it wouldn't be monitored. However, all incoming and outgoing DATA does and it could be read. If it was you'd not be able to tell. The best Rule of Thumb when you are doing anything on a computer in a workplace is that everything can be seen.
Although not every Employer may go to this extent it's the best assumption to prevent trouble.yes............the network belongs to them, and they have all of the jurisdiction pertaining to its usage. while it is true that not all employers will "peek" at your emails; they will routinely track and audit to protect company info and keep a secure system that they pay big bucks for.

Does anyone know of any type of software that I can install onto users computers that will scroll their Outlook 2007 inbox new messages and messages that I want them to see? I would like to send messages to this "Message Board" from my server and or pc about meetings, or upcoming events something to that affect.........any ideas?

Thanks!! Wouldn't be scrolling but something like the below product may be ABLE to do it.

We are looking for something to scroll on the DESKTOP..... I think I misunderstood. Didn't realize you simply wanted it on the Desktop. Solve : BIOS HELP!!!!?

Answer»

Hi. I am having some difficulties with my bios on my computer. I have a MSI 945GM4 Board with a Intel Duo Core 2 2.13 ghz processor with a 6420 CHIPSET. The problem I am having is accessing the bios. I press the delete key where I am prompted to when starting my computer but nothing happens. I have been told that If I go in the bios I can PLAY around with when my second core starts and I believe that this second core is not running well at all. I am trying to play The Elder Scrolls Oblivion on my computer which should play FULLY but is quite choppy. I have a 500 dollar video card so the graphics are not the problem and also 2 gig of ram. So I guess I have a few questions. The first is how can I access my bios? Secondly, Is it true that I can toy around with the duo core to make it more effective? And finally what is the difference between an Intel Pentium 4 and a Duo Core processor. The game specifically says on the back that the recommended is 3.0 ghz Intel Pentium 4, but I thought a Duo core would outmatch that? Any help, advice, or comments for a "noob" of the bios would greatly be appreciated!

Thanks

Dukedurl Sounds to me like you're probably using a USB keyboard with a bios that doesn't support usb keyboards.

When you boot up and it tells you to hit delete to go into the settings, is your num lock key coming on, or does it not come on until after?OMFG DUDE!!! Genius. I restarted my computer and just as u predicted the numberkey doesn't turn on until just after I am prompted to press delete... like a quarter of a second miss. So what do I do now? Should I look for another keyboard or is their a quick fix???

Thanks for the help so far!

DukedurlLook for another keyboard that's ps2, or if you can't find that, look for a usb-ps2 adapter (pretty cheap)So I plug the ps/2 keyboard and mouse in no problem and restart my computer. When the prompt screen appears I checked the keyboard and sure ENOUGH it turns on unlike my usb. So I pressed the delete key and then... asdhfkjdhfkjakjhfjkasd. I get a screen for around half a second with a MSI Bios logo in the top left corner and a whole bunch of text but I can't read it because it flashes so quickly. The computer goes to the windows login screen as usual afterwards. If I dont press the delete key at the prompt then I dont get the screen so I know 100% its not the keyboard. So what the heck am I suppose to do now?

Thanks

DukedurlIf I were you I would do some searching (probably from whatever company you bought your company from) for the newest (or most stable) version of the bios. I would then update your bios with that new one.I bought my computer from a guy just working at his house. Hes cool and all and my family has bought computers from him before without any problems at all. If I did an update of the bios how would I install it if I can't get into the bios. Another question I have is what is it meant if you flash the bios? It was suggested to me but I was told it could have some serious CONSEQUENCES!!!

Thanks

DukedURLYeah, you can flash the bios, effectively erasing and reinstalling it. However, you can face some serious problems if the flash fails or is done incorrectly.so should I maybe think about a reinstall of the entire system cause I have a feeling thats where were headed isnt it?A reinstall of the system will not fix your bios. Bios is on a physical chip in the computer... not quite the same as the software stored on your OS.Are you hitting the delete key just once or repeatedly ? ?
Does the BIOS screen fully load or No ?
If not i would replace the CMOS battery... about the size of a dime ...located on the MBoard.
Part # CR2032 available at any computer store or Wally World.

I'd highly suggest not flashing the BIOS without providing more info on what updates are available from MSI...

Solve : Universial CRT Monitor Reset?

Not all monitors have this function, and there is no universal button that will reset EVERY monitor.
Hope this helps.Thats what I'm afarid of. I checked an didnt find anything. If your monitor has buttons it should be adjustable THOUGH those buttons. Have never encountered a monitor that didn't have that ability with buttons. Some really older monitors also have a button on the back that can be PRESSED to reset. Solve : Alternative keystrokes by mistake?

I'm not sure how to describe this problem, but basically somehow I changed what my keyboard puts onto the screen in wordpad (and on the internet).
